PUBLISHER’S NOTE
CONCIERGE KNOW BEST When it comes to putting together a magazine that helps visitors best experience all that our city has to offer, there’s no better insider source than her concierge. Chicagoland’s 650+ concierges make almost five million referrals each year which includes more than 1.3 million dining recommendations, 1.1 million shopping suggestions, 658,000 nightlife referrals, and almost 1.2 million tips on cultural attractions. It is because of that research and insider’s knowledge that we have decided to refocus our magazine to further highlight concierges’ favorite places around town. Each year, we poll all of the area’s concierges to compile a list of their favorite spots—from restaurants and nightlife venues to shops and cultural attractions. Curious as to which spots they deem tops? They’re denoted with a star in each section’s listings. You’ll also find more concierge insight peppered throughout this issue. From Concierge Hot Spots (p.7) to their tips on what to experience now, no matter what you’re looking to do you’ll feel like the ultimate insider. Whether you’re looking for that perfect hidden gem of a lounge (p.38), to dine at one of the city’s best restaurants (p.18), or to spend an afternoon at a museum (p.44), it’s all here— and sourced from those who know Chicago best. So read on, chart your course, and be prepared to have your most memorable trip yet! Sincerely,
Jim Gilligan Publisher & Vice President

QUINTESSENTIAL CHICAGO
LOCAL FAVORITES by Joel Mora GO TEAM!
It’s that time of year where it’s acceptable to see locals wearing jerseys at sports bars and business meetings. The apparel you’ll likely spot the most belong to the defending Stanley Cup champions the Chicago Blackhawks (p.50), who after winning three championships in the last five years have created a dynasty in the NHL. The Blackhawks share the United Center (p.48) with the Chicago Bulls (p.50) who are coming into the new season with a new coach in Fred Hoiberg and are looking to make it to the NBA’s Eastern Conference Finals. You’ll find another coach change at Soldier Field (p.48) where John Fox has taken over the Chicago Bears (p.49) and is hoping to right the ship after a less than stellar season. The Bears might want to learn something from the Chicago Cubs (p.50). Yes, the MLB regular season is over, but while I’m writing this the Cubs look like they’ll make the playoffs for the first time since 2008. Now the

real question is will they go all the way and make it to the World Series after a 70-year absence? Finally, for those who want to see what all this Major League Soccer action is about don’t miss the Chicago Fire (p.50), and take advantage of their Pub-to-Pitch program where a bus takes you from designated bars in the city to the match at Toyota Park (p.48) and brings you back to the city. LOCAL ART
When you start to see locals line up outside random buildings in the city that means Open House Chicago (p.49) is going on. For 48 hours this festival gives the public free, exclusive access to 200 hidden gems and architectural landmarks. For another look at great art in the city don’t miss out on Chicago Artists Month (p.48). Hundreds of local artists will take over parks, music venues, performance spaces, neighborhoods, studios and more. To catch some great art from around the world don’t miss the Chicago International Film Festival (CIFF) (p.49). As the longest running competitive film festival in North America, CIFF has screened films from greats like Martin Scorsese and Wim Wenders.

Donald Crossley, Concierge, Hyatt Centric The Loop
I love steak and Benny’s Chop House (p.20) is one of my favorite places to go. It’s a great place for family gatherings or just an outing with friends. The food is excellent and is served by a friendly and knowledgeable staff. The atmosphere is both warm and welcoming and the steaks are awesome! They also have live jazz every Wednesday through Saturday. 3 OTHERS TO TRY:

HOLIDAY BEGINNINGS
As we head into November, Chicagoans don’t mind the cold as much because we’re starting the holiday season, and what better way to kick it off than the BMO Harris Bank Magnificent Mile Lights Festival (p.48). With family-friendly activities, a treelighting ceremony with Mickey and Minnie Mouse, performances by top musical artists, and fireworks over the Chicago River, it’s hard to find a better way to get that warm holiday feeling. One of our favorite holidays is Thanksgiving, and you can start yours with some entertainment at the McDonald’s Thanksgiving Parade (p.49). Ronald McDonald will lead a procession of marching bands, characters, floats, and national acts along with Teddy Turkey down State Street that will bring a smile to faces of all ages.
Beena Vaidyan, Front Office Manager, Soho House Chicago
If anyone knows me, they know that I absolutely love Toro Sushi (p.18) in Lincoln Park. It is, hands down, the best sushi I have ever tried. My favorite rolls are Zero Below and Southern Galz. It is a BYOB spot and the best time to go is when they open at 5 p.m. as they do not accept reservations. 3 OTHERS TO TRY: DD Sushi Dokku (p.37) DD Booze Box (p.40) DD Cowshed Spa (p.13)
Claire Wazienski, Concierge, Renaissance Blackstone
Experience the Hamptons right here in River North at Hampton Social (p.34). Boasting a nautically-themed décor and East Coast garden party vibe, this new hot spot is a great place for happy hour and some light bites. Must-try dishes include the mini crab cakes with charred corn relish and lemon aiolo. 3 OTHERS TO TRY:

DINING
EAT, DRINK, REPEAT by Amber Holst @CP_Chicago
Cozy up and prepare to indulge in the best, most comforting flavors of the season at these conciergeapproved culinary gems BOHO BITES
Celebrate the enduring link between beer, food, and hospitality at Dusek’s Board & Beer (p.36). Serving up a continental European approach to small plates, Dusek’s boasts a convivial neighborhood setting where one can enjoy an honest meal and drinks a plenty. Housed in the old-world style Thalia Hall, Dusek’s imaginatively separates the menu by grains and greens, by sea, and by land and air. Stand-outs include the braised beef cheek, sweetbreads, choucroute, and the wonderfully delicious wood-roasted panzanella salad. After dinner, make sure to venture down to Punch House, the supremely cool cocktail bar in the basement. River North’s Bohemian House (p.20) captures the lighthearted essence
Dusek's Board & Beer ì
of Bohemian culture. Exposed brick walls and wood timber, eclectic decor, warm earth tones and soft lighting set the backdrop for a comfortable and sociable dining experience. Chef Jimmy Papadopoulos has created an original menu of Bohemian-inspired fare with influences from the Czech Republic, Germany, and Austria. Open for dinner, late night, and weekend brunch, the menu presents a selection of small and large plates that are ideal for sharing making it a great spot for gathering with friends or colleagues. Concierges’ recommend the grilled chicken paprikash with pickled sweet peppers, kale, and Czech potato dumplings saying it is an ideal dish for fall. COMMUNAL NIBBLING
A tapas-style restaurant, the Purple Pig’s (p.19) tagline is “cheese, swine and wine” and delivers on all counts. The small-plate, Mediterranean cuisine from Jimmy Bannos Jr. ranges Dusek's Board & Beer ï

from their house-made charcuterie and antipasto options like pork fried almonds with rosemary and garlic (they’re addicing!) to smears such as their house-cured lardo iberico. Their extensive, global, and very affordable wine list rounds out the bill of fare. While communal seating and a no-reservations policy may deter some, don’t let it. This hot spot delivers every time and is the perfect spot to unwind after a day spent shopping along the Magnificent Mile (M9). A runaway favorite since its opening, Girl and the Goat (p.37) serves up an incredible menu of small plates at entirely reasonable prices. The culinary imagination of chef Stephanie Izard never ceases to amaze, whether it is gussied up green beans or crispy pig cheeks with over-easy eggs, you simply can’t go wrong here. Also nearby is Avec (p.36), a perennial favorite, you must try their ever-popular (and mouthwatering) chorizo-stuffed, bacon-wrapped Medjool dates. One bite and you’ll soon understand why they have cult following.

CHICAGO AFTER DARK By Amber Holst @CP_Chicago
Andy's Jazz Club ì
No matter if you’re looking for live music, a great late-night bite, or a fancy cocktail lounge, Chicago’s got you covered. Here’s a look at some of concierges’ favorite nightlife spots around town. GRAB A DRINK
Love bubbles? Then head over to River North’s Pops for Champagne (p.43). This concierge-approved lounge offers up live jazz, a huge Champagne and sparkling wine list, and handcrafted cocktails in Watershed ï
Watershed ï
a memorable atmosphere. This location is also home to another concierge favorite: Watershed (p.41). Located downstairs from Pops, this cozy-as-can-be lounge showcases why Midwest is best. Dedicated to craft beers and artisanal spirits, all of which are sourced from the Great Lakes region and surrounds, the atmosphere couldn’t be more approachable. So venture down, treat yourself to a neat pour of the good stuff, and end your evening out in style at this adorable underground retreat. Hubbard Street in River North has become a go-to nightlife destination with several bars and venues dotting the landscape. Henry’s Swing Club (p.40), though, stands out from the rest. Created by David Morton and Michael Kornick of DMK Restaurants, Henry’s embodies everything the two seasoned restaurateurs feel a bar must have. From free pool and cheap classic drinks to bourbon backs and a beyond-reasonably priced menu of great bar fare, this low key hot spot is sure to delight. It’s no secret that Chicago loves its Irish pubs. So as the temperature starts to dip, why not warm up at Fadó Irish Pub (p.40) for the authentic pub experience. Pull up a chair, order ale, and get fired up over

In the 1920s, a door painted green was the sign of a speakeasy. The Drifter (p.40), nestled under the historic Green Door Tavern is just that, featuring a live act every night, cocktails on Tarot Cards, and a speakeasy vibe. It’s one of my favorite hidden Chicago gems.

the day’s soccer or rugby match. Up for another round? Head over to Division Street and experience Butch McGuire’s (p.40), a local favorite and the self-proclaimed “original singles bar.” This decked-out nightlife staple is a great place for burgers, beers on tap, and meeting up with friends. LISTEN UP
Andy’s Jazz Club (p.42) has been serving up two jazz shows, seven days a week, to its dinner and drinks crowd since 1975 and, given its proximity to the Magnificent Mile (M9), it’s an ideal locale to pop in for some great live music when you’re crunched on time. If you’re in the mood for a great martini, tunes, and audience participation, you must experience the Redhead Piano Bar (p.43) in River North. Dueling pianos and strong drinks more your speed? Then Howl at the Moon (p.42) is the place you want to be. Henry's Swing Club î

CHICAGO’S HIDDEN-GEM MUSEUMS by Joel Mora
Driehaus Museum ì

The concierge know that when the weather doesn’t cooperate Chicago has plenty of world-class museums to get some culture. However, along with the large museums in town the concierge like to send guests to amazing off the beaten path museums that really gives Chicago that edge over other cities. Here are a few. RICHES IN RIVER NORTH
To time travel to the Gilded Age don’t miss out on the Driehaus Museum (p.46), a completely restored 19th-century mansion in River North
that was the home of Samuel Mayo Nickerson, one of the founder of the First National Bank in Chicago. If the opulent decor doesn’t leave your jaw on the floor then their exhibit “Maker & Muse: Women and Early Twentieth Century Art Jewelry” will. The exhibit explores the resistance against mass production brought on by the Industrial Revolution and the way women were an integral part of that handcrafted jewelry movement. The museum highlights more than 250 ravishing items that include extremely intricate rings, pendants, necklaces, brooches, tiaras, and even cigarette holders. Unlike other museums where these pieces might be put up against a white wall, having this jewelry displayed at the Driehaus Museum makes it feel like it always belonged in the home. HISPANIC HERITAGE
International Museum íï of Surgical Science
As the only Latino museum accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, the National Museum of Mexican Art (p.46) provides a muchneeded look at Mexican art from both sides of the border and from both past and present. Located in Pilsen, the heart of the Mexican community in Chicago, the most anticipated exhibit every year is the one dedicated to the Day of the Dead, which is the largest annual exhibit dedicated to

the Mexican holiday in the country. With 116 art pieces and 90 artists from both the U.S. and Mexico, this year is no different. “La Muerte Niña: Day of the Dead” focuses on the tradition of painting the Death Child for this Mexican holiday meant to help the spiritual journey of friends and family members we have lost. MEDICAL MARVELS
At the International Museum of Surgical Science (p.46) your eyes will easily jump from the medical instruments, paintings, and statues to the breathtaking Gold-Coast building they are housed in. Over 7,000 medical artifacts, 600 art pieces, over 5,000 medical books, and more are housed in a 20th-century four-story mansion that resembles Le Petit Trianon, a French chateau on the grounds of Versailles. Here iron lungs, skulls with holes drilled in them, hearing aids from different Driehaus Museum î

eras, statues of medical greats, murals depicting important moments in medical history, and more will enlighten those with or without any medical knowledge. CULTURE CONSERVATION
It would seem impossible to try to capture the entire African American experience but as the nation’s first independent museum dedicated to the collection, preservation, and study of the history and culture of Africans and Americans of African descent the Dusable Museum of African American History (p.46) does an excellent job. It is best seen in their newest exhibit “Freedom, Resistance and the Journey Toward Equality” where the visitor travels from a world of slavery, seen in the replica of the hold of the slave ship, to the presidency of Barack Obama, seen in a video of his victory speech in Grant Park.
