QUINTESSENTIAL CHICAGO

ONLY IN CHICAGO By Joel Mora @CP_Chicago

These six events stretching from newcomers to cultural favorites are only possible in Chicago and will define any successful trip to the city. CULTURAL MUSTS

When the weather doesn’t want to cooperate Chicago’s museums provide world-class entertainment. During Museum Week (p.52) 12 cultural institutions will offer must-see exhibits, special presentations, and discounts. The Art Institute, Chicago History Museum, Lincoln Park Zoo, and Museum of Science and Industry are just some of the powerhouse museums participating. For 48 hours Open House Chicago (p.52) from the Chicago Architecture Foundation gives the public free, exclusive access to 200 hidden gems and architectural landmarks that are rarely ever seen by the public. Highlights include visiting the Suite of Presidents at the Blackstone Renaissance Hotel where 12 sitting presidents have stayed, step inside the vault of the Chicago Board of

Trade Building, and more across the city. For 52 years the Chicago International Film Festival (p.52) has been in the forefront of the film world in presenting the world’s best in cinema whether it be fiction, nonfiction, or animation. From showing Martin Scorsese’s first feature film and premiering films like “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” and “Grey Gardens,” the festival has done it all. This year the festival will honor Peter Bogdanovich and Steve McQueen, host the North American premieres of “One Week and a Day” and “Are We Not Cats,” and screen 25 feature films. BACON AND BARLEY

After a popular first year, Bacon and Beer Classic (p.51) returns to Soldier Field serving up over 30 bacon-infused dishes from local restaurants and over 80 craft beers from local and regional breweries. Not only is the festival filled with America’s favorite liquid and solid but there

Tucked behind Intro in the Belden Stratford, Naoki Sushi (p.16) offers straightforward, amazingly fresh sushi selections with some unique yummy twists like edamame guac dip. Relax in their simple and contemporary decor. Perhaps make a night of it at the Belden Stratford: cocktails at Intro (p.16), a cozy dinner at Naoki, and then night cap and dessert at the smallest full service bar in Chicago inside Mon Ami Gabi (p.16). Quite a delicious trifecta! is also music, interactive games, educational opportunities, and the opportunity to explore Soldier Field. HOLIDAY FAVORITES

The days are shorter and the lack of sun can start to create a lack of energy, but Michigan Avenue will brighten your nights when they turn on the holidays at the BMO Harris Bank Magnificent Mile Lights Festival (p.52). This parade lights up over one million lights on Michigan Avenue making it a winter wonderland. You can get the celebration started earlier this year as it has stretched into two days with the first day including family friendly activities, live entertainment, and Santa Claus appearances. Ride the holiday spirit the following week and start your Thanksgiving with the McDonald’s Thanksgiving Parade (p.52). Ronald McDonald will lead a procession of marching bands, characters, floats, and national acts along with Teddy Turkey down State Street that will bring a smile to faces of all ages. Jose Gonzalez, Concierge, LondonHouse Chicago

New to River North, and a favorite in my book, is Arbella (p.40). This swanky, lofty lounge offers a great happy hour with live DJ sets. Make sure to try their refreshing Tempo Bello cocktail, a grapefruit-infused gin drink with Luxardo and Tempus Fugit, and make sure to pair their polpo appetizer with some K.F.C (Korean fried chicken). You won’t regret it. 3 OTHERS TO TRY:

DD Prime & Provisions (p.16) DD Dusek’s Board & Beer (p.34) DD NellcÔte (p.36)

Akilah Perry, Concierge, 900 North Michigan Shops

Fall equals football. Don't worry if you can't get into Soldier Field, just head on over to Vice District Brewing Company (p.43) to catch the game and enjoy any variety of rotating microbrews on tap. Concierge tip: On Bears game days growlers go on sale at 10 a.m. #BearDown 3 OTHERS TO TRY:

DINING

DRESSED TO IMPRESS By Amber Holst @CP_Chicago

NellcÔte ïì

Whether you’re looking to wow a date or close a business deal, we tapped into those who know the city’s culinary scene best: the concierge. Here’s a look at five restaurants they say are sure to impress. WEST LOOP STUNNERS

Inspired by the French villa where the Rolling Stones famously recorded “Exile on Main Street,” Nellcôte (p.36) is both refined and approachable and will transport you to an era of glamour since forgotten. Described by Kimberly Collins of Corporate Concierge Services as being “different from anything else," the décor here is opulent enough to make Marie Antoinette proud and the European-inspired small plates deliver on all counts. From inventive, wood-fired pizzas (make sure to add the house-made fennel sausage to yours) to delectable pastas like the tagliatelli bolognese, the offerings are all locally sourced and beautifully executed. For something that’s flirty, sexy, and fun, LondonHouse Chicago Concierge Shannon Boland recommends Carnivale (p.36). This upbeat and sprawling eatery boasts a festive vibe and offers everything from authentic soulful cuisine to simple dishes from all over Latin America. North Pond ïì

15

Carnivale ïì

A kaleidoscope of colors, salsa music, and playful decor this West Loop mainstay always makes for a memorable dining experience. CHEFS IN-RESIDENCE

Rachael King, concierge at the InterContinental Chicago, suggests Intro (p.16), the innovative-yet-casually-upscale Lincoln Park restaurant that showcases up-and-coming culinary talent from around the country to Chicago. Led by executive chef/partner Stephen Gillanders, the restaurant offers a delicious, versatile a la carte menu which evolves seasonally and is always available. Throughout the year, Intro welcomes visiting chefs who work in collaboration with Gillanders to create dishes for the a la carte menu as well as a separate tasting menu that is reflective of their own personal style. ROOM WITH A VIEW

Chef Bruce Sherman’s romantic, landmark restaurant North Pond (p.16) is perfectly situated alongside a pond in a 1912 Arts & Crafts-style building in the heart of Lincoln Park (the actual park). Reside Living concierge Beth LaBrosse says her go-to restaurant for guests looking for a truly unique dining experience. Featuring dishes served at the height of seasonality, Sherman has patronized small farms and local markets for years to get the freshest ingredients possible. The room housing nine-foot French doors offers diners a bird's-eye view of the pond and the park with the city skyline looming above the treetops. Needless to say, there’s not a bad seat in the house. APPROACHABLE & INVITING

With a prime location across the street from Millennium Park (M3), Sheraton Chicago Hotel & Towers concierge Suzanne Spring suggests bringing your VIP to Acanto (p.16) where, she says, the “food is simple, yet every bite has a layer of flavor." While located just a stone’s throw

from some of the city’s most popular tourism destinations, expect to mingle with locals as this is a favorite of area condo dwellers—and for good reason. Get cozy in the beautifully appointed dining room and let the helpful staff guide you through the menu of handcrafted pastas, coastal seaside plates, stone oven pizzas, and charcuterie. Acanto also has an impressive range of hand-selected wines from all of Italy’s 20 wine regions in addition to craft Italian birra, and Italian-inspired cocktails. Intro ï

NIGHTLIFE

BEST BARS FOR GAME DAY By Amber Holst @CP_Chicago

Jake Melnick's ïì Corner Tap

It’s that time again. Every Saturday and Sunday, many of us will be glued to the tube watching our favorite teams battle it out on the football field. No matter what colors you’re flying, Chicago has the perfect place to catch the action. Here’s a look at concierges’ top spots for where you can watch, eat, and drink all season long. BEAR DOWN, DOWNTOWN

Are you ready for some football? Timothy O’Toole’s Pub (p.43) has you covered. The subterranean Streeterville sports pub offers a variety of ways to cheer on Chicago’s beloved Bears. This fall, they’re open for brunch on Saturdays and Sundays at 10 a.m.; 9:30 a.m. on Bears home game days. Chef Corey Grupe’s selections include pretzel French toast, breakfast burrito, rise and shine burger, and more. Get your game on by visiting the bloody Mary bar, mimosa bar, or choosing from 48 brews on tap. Ticket holders heading to Soldier Field can grab a “road soda” and board the pub’s party bus bound for the stadium. The round trip ride is $10 and departs one hour and 15 minutes before the start of the game. No ticket? No problem. O’Toole’s boasts 74 HD screens showing every play made, with sound.

A SWEET LOCATION

Looking for a casual spot to enjoy a burger, catch the game, and relax? Flor Sigaran, concierge at the Chicago Athletic Association Hotel, recommends Sweetwater Tavern & Grille (p.42). Nestled on Michigan Avenue just south of the Chicago River, this 200-seat restaurant has over 20 flat-panel TVs, oversized booth seating, and a large bar with community tables. Needless to say, there’s not a bad seat in the house. Added bonus? They have over 80 craft beers to choose from and, if your team can’t get their offense together, it offers a prime vantage point for people FatPour Tap Works ï

Sweetwater Tavern & Grille ìî

BREWS, BITES, AND FUN

Rachael King, concierge at InterContinental Chicago, can’t get enough of the food and raucous atmosphere at FatPour Tap Works (p.40) in Wicker Park. The bi-level bar and restaurant—which lends its allegiance to the University of Wisconsin Badgers, though is great for catching any game—boasts over 40 flat-screen TVs, 200 beers (50 of which are on tap), and a two-story, glass-enclosed keg cooler. Named for their 22-ounce signature frosted beer mugs, the menu here covers all the sports bar basics—from build-your-own pizzas and specialty burgers to chicken n’ waffle bites and more—so come hungry. TRIED AND TRUE

For a low-key post up experience, Jake Melnick’s Corner Tap (p.41) won’t disappoint. Offering a stellar and expansive beer selection—and great sightlines for catching the game—this local favorite also happens to serve some of the best wings in the city. While they offer traditional Buffalo, we’re partial to the Firecracker wings topped with sweet Thai chili and sriracha sauce. If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, take a whack at their super spicy XXX wings made with habanero, ghost, and scorpion peppers. If you finish an order, you’ll be added to the restaurant’s Wall of Flame.

7 CONCIERGERECOMMENDED TOURS By Joel Mora @CP_Chicago

The rookie mistake to Chicago is assuming that summer is the only time to explore when in reality the fall might be better because it’s not as hot and the streets aren’t as crowded. Tours offer a great way to see the city when it gets too windy, your feet are tired, or you just want to have experts point out all the good knowledge nuggets hidden in Chicago. Here are eight the city’s concierges recommend. LIGHT ON THE FEET AND HEAVY ON THE VIEWS

Jan Viscum, concierge at Hyatt Chicago Magnificent Mile, is a fan of Absolutely Chicago Segway Tours (p.55) because it’s fun and offers a great way to cover a lot of area in a short time. With over 10 different tours, it’s not unusual to take more than one tour with Absolutely Chicago Segway Tours. There are the traditional architecture, park, and lakefront tours, but you can also take advantage of their city lights, haunted, and holiday lights tours. For a good overview of the city, there are two great companies that provide hop-on hop-off tours. Joan Hohs, resident concierge at MILA Chicago, likes Chicago Trolley and Double Decker Co. (p.56) noting that the docents are friendly and knowledgeable, they stay on schedule,

Chicago Helicopter ì Experience

and are reliable. They have 13 stops across the city that you can hop on and off as much as you want. Jon Kasunic, concierge at Hyatt Chicago Magnificent Mile, considers Big Bus (p.55) a must-do experience. They offer 14 stops downtown that visitors can also hop on and off as much as they like, and offer live guides during the tours as well. If you weren’t able to make it to Chicago in the summer months you’re in luck because some of the boat companies still run tours into November. Susan Alexander, lead supervisor at Fashion Outlets of Chicago, believes no matter the season Wendella’s (p.56) architecture tour offers an informative experience

Chicago Trolley and Double Decker Co. î

47 Chicago Detours î

and a good time. If you’re still worried about the weather don’t worry because Wendella’s boats offer a climate-controlled lounge with large windows and speakers to still be able to hear the guide. While you’re down there take advantage of their full service bar offering beer, wine, cocktails, soft drinks, and snacks. After you’ve seen the city on street and water level head to the sky with Chicago Helicopter Experience (p.56) (CHE). John Dillon, concierge at The Ritz-Carlton, says CHE offers a unique perspective on Chicago as you take off from their private downtown heliport, fly along Lake Michigan with unobstructed views of the entire Chicago skyline, head north to Wrigley Field and then back. CHE offers daytime, sunset, and nighttime tours.

In Chicago, the most interesting places can be under your feet and you won’t even know it. Chicago Detours (p.55) helps peel the layers back with their themed tours. Beth LaBrosse, premier concierge at Reside Properties, is a fan of their Loop Interior Architecture Walking Tour that shows how downtown was formed and continues to grow. With the majority of the tour taking place inside it is perfect for all climates and an opportunity to discover the beauty of the Loop's lobbies, corridors, and unique pedway system.

OFF-THE-BEATEN PATH TOURS

With Chicago’s undeniable history, Kasunic believes no visit would be complete without going on Chicago Crime Tours (p.55). Stand at the exact spot where John Dillinger was shot, visit the location of the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre, peek into Frank “The Enforcer” Nitti’s secret vault and tunnels, and more.
