publisher/editor's note

WINTER’S WONDERS Being a Midwestern town, we don’t balk at the cold. We embrace it! From ice skating at Hyde Park’s (M5;D4) historic Midway Plaisance Park and snowshoeing at Northerly Island (M6;H4) to cozying up fireside for an amazing meal out, the city is brimming with things to do. The holidays here are equally special, too. Make sure to check out the animated window displays at Macy’s on State Street (p.12), which are always done to the nines or participate in the candlelit Caroling at Cloud Gate (p.58) series that takes place on select Friday nights in the heart of Millennium Park (M6;D3). Whether you’re looking for traditional favorites or to venture off the beaten path and discover new ones, there’s no shortage of ways to make your winter trip to Chicago memorable. To help you chart your course, this issue of Concierge Preferred offers up some of the season’s best activities. From delving into our favorite comfort foods (p.18) and bellying up for a warming cocktail (p.40) to the best activities for the pint-sized set, it’s all here. Needless to say, there’s no shortage of ways to warm up to Chicago this winter season. So what are you waiting for? Go out and explore!

Sincerely,

Jim Gilligan Publisher & Vice President

quintessential chicago

SEASONAL STAPLES By Joel Mora @CP_Chicago We know the cold weather is not easy, but if you stick to these four pillars you’ll have the warmest, best winter imaginable in Chicago. FAMILY Nothing gives you that warm feeling inside better than spending time with the ones you love. Lincoln Park Zoo’s Zoolights (p.61) provides the perfect setting for just that. Through Jan. 4 the zoo is transformed into a winter wonderland with two million lights, ice carvings, musical light shows, animal encounters, ice skating, holiday crafts, and more. The adults can also enjoy warm-spiced wine and beer while the kids enjoy the carousel and train adventure. LAUGHTER A good laugh is a great way to ignore frigid temperatures and through Dec. 28 Theater Wit is bringing nothing but hilarity with “The Santaland Diaries” (p.61). Adapted from the essay that

äâ Lincoln Park Zoo's Zoolights

made author David Sedaris a star, the play flips the cheeriness of the holidays on its head with the account of Sedaris’ miserable time working as one of Santa’s elves during the holidays.

5 COMFORT FOOD FINDS By Amber Holst @CP_Chicago When the mercury dips, there’s no better time to cozy up with your favorite comfort foods. From delectable smoked meats to steamy bowls of spicy ramen, here’s a look at some of Chicago’s best dishes that’ll help melt away the winter blues. WHERE TO SLURP If the chilly weather’s got you down, there’s no better cure than a bowl of ramen. With several recently-opened ramen shops now dotting Chicago’s culinary landscape, one of our top picks is Ramen-San (p.34). Abiding by three principles of “noodles make everything better,” “cold beer makes life more fun,” and “no one gets a room pumped up like Eric B. & Rakim,” they set the bar high. Fortunately, they deliver on all accounts. From traditional offerings like their shoyu with chicken broth, a molten egg, and mushrooms, to more creative offerings like their kimchi and fried chicken with pork broth and buttered corn, there’s no shortage of warming, flavor-packed offerings. Toss in a pork belly mantou bun and an Ashai cold draft beer and

âä Green Street Smoked Meats

your night can’t get much better. Let me just say if you’ve haven’t tasted the caldos at Xoco (p.34), you haven’t tasted soup. Xoco serves up limited fare: tortas (Mexican streetstyle sandwiches) and caldos (intense, hearty soups served after 11 a.m.). All of the caldos are excellent, but I’m partial to shortrib red chile soup with braised tallgrass shortribs, red chile broth, roasted vegetables, epazote, wild arugula, and lime or the pork belly vermicelli (fideos) with crispy-tender pork belly, toasty-tender noodles, woodland mushrooms, zucchini, avocado, and salsa negra.

19 ä Carriage House

CLASSIC COMFORTS Let’s face it, nothing comforts quite like the gooey, baked goodness of a perfectly-crafted mac and cheese. While the elevated Southern comfort food fare at chef Art Smith’s ritzy Table Fifty-Two (p.22) is draw enough alone, the three cheese mac is one of our favorite side dishes in the city (and is filling enough to be an entrée). Served in a cast-iron pan straight from the wood-burning oven it is perfectly smoky and bubbly, with a crispy top made out of gooey cheese that melts down the sides of the bowl. It’s difficult to pick just one comforting dish at Carriage House (p.20), a Wicker Park hot spot whose menu boasts the best of Lowcountry cuisine, but you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better variation of chicken and biscuits in the city. Perfectly crispy on the outside and joyfully juicy on the inside served with rich gravy chock-full of sausage pieces, a flaky buttermilk biscuit, and pimento cheese as an added bonus. ALL THE MEATS Follow the smoked-meat aroma down the cobblestone alley off the

â Table Fifty-Two

âä Xoco

West Loop’s restaurant row, enter through the unmarked door on the left, and prepare to experience the glory that is Green Street Smoked Meats (p.36). A shrine to all-thingsmarbled, this Texas barbecue smokehouse offers up all the meats from smoked brisket and pork ribs to pork belly, pulled pork sandwiches, chicken legs and everything in between. We can’t get enough of their thick, melt-in-your-mouth slices of brisket but you can’t go wrong with anything on the menu. Round out your order by treating yourself to one of their many sides—potato salad, baked beans, and even a “Frito pie”—before grabbing some bench at one of the communal picnic tables and slipping into a wonderful, self-induced meat coma. Friends, it doesn’t get much better than this in Chicago.

WHERE TO WARM UP

äâ Fig & Olive

By Bobby Gonzalez, Concierge, Hotel Palomar Not all bars are created equal, especially during Chicago’s chiller winter months. Fortunately, the city’s flush with warming libations and cozy bars to help you beat the cold-weather blues. Here’s a look at some top spots to drink, you know, to warm up. FIG & OLIVE Oak Street (M9;P2)—one of Chicago’s most fashionable shopping strips—is also home to Fig & Olive (p.22), a chic Mediterranean restaurant with buzzed about outposts in both New York and California. A welcome addition to the city’s culinary landscape, Fig & Olive’s décor is what makes it the perfect respite from the sub-zero wind chill. Boasting a pale palette, complete with a live tree growing through a cutout in the ceiling (and serving as a focal point of the bar), this space is as bright and lovely as they come. Cozy up to the bar and treat yourself to one of their creative cocktails like the Arugula Smash (rum

â Watershed

muddled with celery and arugula, lemon juice, simple syrup, and black pepper) or one of their many wine-bythe-glass offerings. DRUMBAR In the summer, it’s all about their terrace. But in colder months, Drumbar’s (p.43) interior takes center stage. A cocktail-focused bar perched atop the Raffaello Hotel, the luscious space boasts tufted leather banquets, dark woods, a fireplace, and one of the city’s most extensive bourbon lists. Behind the stick you’ll find Alex Renshaw, who was recently named one of Food & Wine magazine’s “Best New Mixologists”, whose well-curated cocktail list

â Drumbar offers seasonal sippers like a spicy tequila hot chocolate called Life in Balance that’s made with Tromba tequila, green chartreuse, house made hot chocolate, agave whipped cream topped with cayenne powder, and served in a hot toddy. Another favorite is the Fear & Desire made with roasted corn infused Mezcal, Luxardo amaro abano, Averna, vanilla, salt, whole egg, angostura bitters, grated cinnamon, and served up. Needless to say, Drumbar is truly one of Chicago’s best winter drinking destinations. THE DAWSON Located at the busy six corner intersection of Grand, Milwaukee, and Halsted, The Dawson (p.42) is a woodclad and warmly lit destination offering up some of my favorite cocktails in town. Grab a spot at the downstairs bar, take in the charming collection of glassware, and have fun navigating

ä Watershed

â Drumbar the extensive and thoughtful libations menu. From classics like Fernet and house-made cola to daily dram, an ever-changing shot of Old Forester bourbon that drips down a twisting glass contraption to infuse the liquor with botanicals, the crafty cocktails here are sure to delight. If you find yourself peckish, their charcuterie plate is one of the best in city. WATERSHED Located below Pops for Champagne (p.52), Watershed (p.47) is my go-to subterranean hideout. A parlor room dedicated to craft beers and artisanal spirits—all from the Great Lakes region and surrounds—the atmosphere couldn’t be more approachable and is actually somewhat reminiscent of hanging out in a friends basement (in a good way). So venture down, treat yourself to a neat pour of whiskey or a featured microbrew and kick off your weekend in style at this classy underground retreat.

ESSENTIAL HOLIDAY HAPPENINGS By Amber Holst @CP_Chicago FAMILY FAVORITES With the stunning skyline and illuminated trees as its backdrop, taking a few laps around the iconic McCormick Tribune Ice Rink (p.60) at Millennium Park has become a winter staple. Whether you’re taking to the ice yourself (skate rentals are $10 a pair and admission is free) or just looking to soak in the festive atmosphere, more than 100,000 skaters glide, twirl, and/or stumble on this downtown ice rink each year, and for good reason. It’s a quintessential Chicago winter experience. While those who call Chicago home enjoy the return of the Christkindlmarket (p.59) each year, so do visitors from all over the world who come to visit this unique outdoor holiday market. As the market is a celebration of German traditions, typical German food and drink items are sold throughout. In addition, Christkindlmarket is the ultimate outdoor Christmas shopping market, offering a huge array of fun holiday items, unique gifts—many of which are handmade by vendors— and much, much more.

Find thrills without the chills inside the 14th annual PNC Bank Winter WonderFest (p.61) at Navy Pier (p.56). Taking place Dec. 5 through Jan. 11, this indoor winter playground is jam-packed with family fun. Featuring 170,000-square-feet of rides, giant slides, and even a Chicago Blackhawks Indoor Ice Skating Rink there’s no better place to enjoy the best of winter indoors. HISTORICAL HOLIDAY HAUNTS The historic Walnut Room located on the 7th floor of Macy’s on State Street (p.12) has become a tradition of dining, especially around the holidays, for generations. Decked out in its seasonal best, the focal point is the 45-foot tall Great Tree, adored with LED star ornaments and twinkling lights. This year, there’s even an hourlong light show broken into 15-minute segments with a “magical moment” taking place every hour on the hour. Afterward, stroll around the flagship store and take in the animated holiday window displays. This year’s theme

is “The Journey of a Christmas Wish,” which tells the story of a girl who sends her wish list to Santa taking the viewers to Santa’s workshop and along for the ride on his sleigh. Celebrating its 73rd year, the Museum of Science and Industry’s (p.53) "Christmas Around the World and Holidays of Light" exhibit features more than 50 trees and displays, each decorated by volunteers from Chicago’s ethnic communities to reflect their diverse culture and holiday traditions. Here, you can stroll through the dazzling forest of trees, enjoy intermittent falling “snow,” and savor the performances of various dance and choral groups on the Holiday Stage. This year’s event features a Disney theme, highlighting the mu-

seum’s temporary exhibit "Treasures of the Walk Disney Archives." The museum’s 45-foot Grand Tree pays homage to the exhibit with more than 30,000 lights and hundreds of Disneyinspired ornaments and trimmings. NO ‘BAH HUMBUGS’ HERE Chicago many have many productions of it, but nothing is more synonymous with the Christmas season than “A Christmas Carol” at the Goodman Theatre (p.62). With plenty of bah humbugs and ghostly apparitions, you’ll be dazzled by the set and the story. For an elegant evening, jeté your way to the ballet. The Joffrey Ballet’s (p.62) annual performance of “The Nutcracker” has been a Chicago tradition since the 1980s. Experience Tchaikovsky’s classic score and the spectacle of this classic holiday ballet.
