CHICAGO’S BEST WINTER GIFTS By Joel Mora @CP_Chicago

Winter Wonderfest. ì

Don’t let the winter scare you. Embrace it because you don’t want to miss these winter favorites that will bring joy to your closet, ears, eyes, and belly. UNIQUE GIFTS

If you want to stand out during gift exchanges this holiday season don’t miss the One of a Kind Show and Sale (p.51) at the theMart. With more than 600 artists from across North America there is surely a vendor to match your style. Not only are the vendors unique, but so is the experience where you can enjoy fashion shows, live music, artist talks, a sports cafe, and other events. New this year will be the Emerging Market where the festival will feature 40 upand-coming designers. WONDERLAND

Nothing gives you that warm feeling inside than spending time with the ones you love. Lincoln Park Zoo’s ZooLights (p.52) provides a perfect setting for just that. The zoo is transformed into a winter wonderland with two million lights, ice carvings, musical light shows, animal encounters, ice skating, holiday crafts, and more. Just a touch south you

Buddy Guy's Legends í

can also head to Winter Wonderfest (p.51) with 170,000 square feet of rides, a Blackhawks ice rink, and more family fun at Navy Pier. RISE TO THE OCCASION

Last year saw the establishment of a new tradition in Chicago with ChiTown Rising (p.50), which saw 90,000 people celebrate the new year at the Chicago River. Last year brought ZooLights ï

great musical acts including Chicago who performed as a star rose 36 stories in the air, and this year promises to be bigger and better than last year. Stay tuned to conciergepreferred.com to see the lineup of performers and more. ROCK 2017

Throughout the year visitors love to visit Buddy Guy’s Legends to catch a glimpse of the blues icon, but sometimes they leave missing him. Make sure to make it in January for the Buddy Shows (p.50) where the legend will perform 16 shows with special guests at his blues club. He may be 80 years old, but Buddy Guy can still play and wail. FOODIE WEEK

Get your Instagram accounts ready for all the beautifully delicious plates awaiting during Chicago Restaurant Week (p.50). Over 250 of Chicago’s most popular and revered restaurants will be offering special prix fixe menus from $22–$44. New this year will be the addition of a brunch prix fixe menu starting at $22. Chi-Town Rising ï

If you are in the mood to dine and take in some live music, then head to the V Lounge at Eddie V’s Prime Seafood (p.18). The welcoming atmosphere makes it a perfect spot for the holidays and their food is delicious. I recommend the oysters and their Chilean sea bass. For dessert make sure to try their Bananas Foster. 3 OTHERS TO TRY:

DD Tortoise Supper Club (p.34) DD Ditka’s (p.18) DD GT Fish & Oyster (p.20)

Vineeta Santoshi, Concierge, Corporate Concierge Services

The Christkindlmarket (p.51) is an open-air European holiday market on Daley Plaza and features traditional art and beautiful handmade gifts. There are many must-try food and drinks including thüringer (sausage), glühwein (mulled wine) and stollen (holiday fruit bread). There is diverse holiday entertainment including choirs and carolers. Best of all, admission is free. 3 OTHERS TO TRY:

DD "Christmas Around the World" and "Holidays of Light" at the Museum of Science & Industry (p.48) DD “It’s a Wonderful Life” at the Greenhouse Theater Center (p.51) DD Winter Wonderfest at Navy Pier (p.51)

Mark Kraemer, Concierge, Hotel Palomar Chicago

Harking back to the glory days of hotel lobby bars, the Gold Coast’s Sparrow (p.42) is a welcome respite for cold winter days. A 1930s-era rum-focused cocktail bar, the environs here are as impressive as their creations. Make sure to try La Florita made with Panama white rum, maraschino, lime, grapefruit, and whirled with crushed ice for a truly transportive experience. 3 OTHERS TO TRY:

DD ZooLights at Lincoln Park Zoo (p.52) DD Skating Ribbon at Maggie Daley Park (p.49) DD Beacon Tavern (p.18) FOR MORE IDEAS VISIT

DINING

2016’S TOP TABLES By Amber Holst @CP_Chicago

Chicago’s dining landscape has grown exponentially this past year, having seen a slew of fresh new concepts open in practically every corner of the city. Having a hard time deciding where to dine? Let Chicago’s concierges’ help you narrow down the choices. Here’s a look at four of their favorite new restaurants around town.

Monteverde ïì

CULINARY KALEIDOSCOPE

Revival Food Hall (p.18) is an alllocal dining concept that essentially serves as a best-of hit list of Chicago’s culinary staples and burgeoning talents all under one roof. The massive, 24,000 square foot venue is located in the heart of The Loop in The National building, a historic century-old property designed by the legendary Daniel Burnham. This collaborative project boasts 15 fastcasual stalls spotlighting the city’s diverse dining culture with outposts of Antique Taco, Furious Spoon, Smoque BBQ, Black Dog Gelato, the first location for sandwich-centric food truck The Fat Shallot, and much more. Concierges advice? Come hungry and prepare to gather snacks from a variety of counters to maximize your experience.

LANDMARK LOOP DINING

The Loop's stylish Kimpton Gray Hotel is home to Steadfast (p.18), a handsome, New American restaurant where the likes of wood-grilled kale with bacon vinaigrette and whole-roasted duck cassoulet pair perfectly with their extensive selection of rare brown spirits. Executive chef Chris Davies and executive pastry chef Christopher Teixeira double-team a menu of inspired dishes that infuse Mediterranean and Portuguese flavors into beautifully composed dishes. The focal point of the luxe dining room is the exhibition kitchen, which gives Steadfast ï

15 Steadfast î

guests from every seat in the house a great up-close-and-personal look at the culinary action. PUTTING PASTA FIRST

The vibe is casual but the food makes the evening feel special at Monteverde (p.36), an Italian restaurant in the West Loop. Here, celebrated chef Sarah Grueneberg blends the traditions of Italian culture and cooking with influences from her family heritage and trips around the world. At the heart of the restaurant—which was recently named by "Food & Wine" as one of 2016’s “Best New Restaurants”—is the pastificio, where the team creates fresh, handmade pastas throughout the day in all shapes, sizes, and textures. From skate wing schnitzel to her beautifully simple, but masterful cacio e pepe, the food here is always soulful and surprising.

Seafood and New American small plates round out the menu, alongside signature cocktails and a plethora of wines by the glass, all offered in stylishly edgy surrounds.

MODERN MEAT PALACE

Chef Giuseppe Tentori offers a delightful departure from the traditional steakhouse with his new River North restaurant GT Prime (p.20). The menu revolves around 4-8 ounces of perfectly prepared beef, lamb, buffalo, and venison that’s served sliced and intended for sharing. Brown Bag at Revival Food Hall. î Photo by Neil Burger.

NIGHTLIFE

BEST NEW BARS By Amber Holst @CP_Chicago

When it comes to places to imbibe in Chicago, the Second City is second to none. Here’s a look at three new bars making big blips on concierges’ radars.

ìï Arbella

ADVENTURE IN A GLASS

Looking for expertly crafted cocktails with killer presentations? Romeo Garcia, concierge at the Dana Hotel & Spa, suggests you try River North’s new cocktail lounge Arbella (p.40). This hip spot sets the scene as a refined, social gathering place for cocktail enthusiasts and expertly pairs its long list of elaborate, globally inspired mixed drinks with equally international small plates. Aesthetically the bar is both sleek and cozy, with soft lighting illuminating exposed brick (and a stunning mural), creating a place where you can truly unwind, be transported, and stave off that winter chill. With nearly 30 cocktails to choose from, the menu is grouped into broad geographical areas and starts with light, refreshing options and progresses to stronger, more aromatic drinks like the Chicago Fire Extinguisher, a scotch-based drink with herbaceous Luxardo amaro abano and smoked Angostura bitters that is built in a round corked jar with smoke forced inside. No matter which cocktail you

choose, the creative concoctions here are sure to make you feel as if you’re oceans away from River North. JUST A BAR

For great cocktails and a perfectly laid-back atmosphere, Melissa Driza, chef concierge at the Kinzie Hotel, recommends Moneygun (p.41). Located in the Fulton Market neighborhood

ï Moneygun

39

of Chicago, this watering hole boasts a vintage neighborhood feel with its distressed facade, faux leather booths, and curved bar specializing in elevated takes on classic cocktails. In addition to revered classics like a negroni or French 75, Moneygun slings up refined versions of pina coladas, strawberry margs, and even Long Island iced teas. Couple that with the small, but inspired list of bar snacks and you’ll soon see why locals can’t get enough of this no-frills drinking establishment.

ìï Federales

LET’S TACO ‘BOUT IT

“Shot glasses made of ice? Yes please,” says Driza. While being able to throw those empty shot glasses at a bell located on the patio is reserved for the warmer months, Federales (p.40) in the West Loop is an ideal getaway in winter, too. A lofty tacoand-tequila establishment, they offer a fresh take on traditional roadside taco joints in Mexico specializing in barbacoa-style tacos stuffed with flavorful meats like shredded beef brisket and pork belly al pastor in addition to ceviches and other shareable fare. The booze program here puts the spotlight on

margaritas—which come in flavors like classic, mezcal, strawberry, hibiscus, and even a boozy horchata variation—in addition to a lineup of Mexican beers including Tecate served with a hot sauce-spiced rim, tequila, mezcal, and so much more. With its boisterous atmosphere and open-air design, Federales is a nice homage to festive Mexican cantinas and an ideal spot for a night out.

BEAT THE WEATHER AT THESE MUSEUMS By Joel Mora @CP_Chicago

A lot of Chicago’s culture exists out in the open, but when the temperature drops and the wind picks up it’s hard to experience it all. Luckily enough, the city houses world-class museums where a visitor can spend days. Here are the concierges’ choices for the perfect museums for a dreary day. Cynthia Rodriguez, concierge with Corporate Concierge Services, recommends the Art Institute of Chicago (AIC) (p.48) because it has “many areas to be explored that show art in perspectives of history, beauty, religion, and freedom of expression.” The AIC also has a great holiday spirit. Head inside and see some great holiday traditions like the holiday decorations of the miniature Thorne Rooms. The miniature rooms capture European interior decorating from the 13th century to the 1930s and American interior rooms from the 17th century to the 1930s. It has been a tradition every year for AIC to dress up the rooms for the holiday season. Highlights include the Chinese room ready for

the Chinese New Year; the yule log, wassailing bowl, and mummer’s mask of the English Great Hall of the Tudor; and the mistletoe, wreath, and garland of the Virginia Entrance Hall. You’re not going to want to miss the only Christmas tree in the exhibit in the English Drawing Room of the Victorian Period. Brianna Connell, concierge with Corporate Concierge Services, is a fan of the Museum of Science and Industry (MSI) (p.48) because “there is a lot of interactive and fun things

to keep you occupied.” Experience the beloved annual holiday tradition at MSI “Christmas Around the World” and “Holidays of Light” exhibits. This year’s colorful theme is inspired by the museum’s temporary exhibit “Brick by Brick.” In the rotunda, the 45-foot Grand Tree will be decked out with more than 30,000 twinkling, colorful lights and LEGO ornaments and decorations. Make sure to experience the “snow” that falls every half hour. The museum’s main floor dazzles with 50 12-foot trees beautifully decorated by volunteers from Chicago’s ethnic communities representing their diverse culture and holiday traditions. “Holidays of Light” is a multicultural display of holidays that celebrate light or enlightenment. Melissa Driza, chef concierge at the Kinzie Hotel, loves the Chicago History Museum’s (p.48) location. If you’re looking to get a dress for a loved one or yourself for the holidays it might be a good idea to get some inspiration from their newest exhibit “Making Mainbocher: The

î International Museum of Surgical Science

First American Couturier.” Marvel at the 30 dresses, the photographs, and the illustrations highlighting the impressive career of Chicago-born Mainbocher from working at the complaint department of Sears, Roebuck and Company to becoming a haute couturier. For something off-the-beaten path and fascinating, John Dillon, concierge at the Ritz-Carlton, recommends International Museum of Surgical Science (p.48). Your eyes will easily jump from the medical instruments, paintings, and statues to the breathtaking Gold Coast building they are housed in. Over 7,000 medical artifacts, 600 art pieces, over 5,000 medical books, and more are housed in a 20th-Century four-story mansion that resembles Le Petit Trianon, a French chateau on the grounds of Versailles. Here iron lungs, skulls with holes drilled in them, hearing aids from different eras, statues of medical greats, murals depicting important moments in medical history, and more will enlighten those with or without any medical knowledge.
