The Garfield Park Conservatory. As a native Floridian, every winter, I need a reminder that eventually there will be a summer! The Cactus and Tropical rooms ensure that even in the dead of winter, it is always summer, somewhere in the city. Bonus points for being free and easily accessible on the CTA!

The Chicago Cultural Center has a big presence on Michigan Ave, however the interior has a quiet calm to enjoy the various art exhibits and architecture. Be sure to take the time to explore and look for the beautiful quiet elegance of the Tiffany dome.

9  'Tis the season for gifting and all things merry, so swap the computer screen haze of online shopping and opt for something a little more scenic. Once you've made your lists and checked them twice, explore these Illinois destinations best suited for shopping during the holidays and beyond.

Plan Your Illinois Shopping Getaway

The Magnificent Mile More than 460 retailers line the strip of this popular downtown Chicago street, boasting everything from major department stores to designer chic. Individual storefronts aside, along this 13-block stretch you'll also find three separate vertical shopping malls: The Shops at North Bridge, 900 North Michigan Shops and Water Tower Place. And when it's time for a break, seek out some of the city's most notable landmarks and dining establishments. Take a trip to the top of the 100-story John Hancock Center or retrace history with the collection of famous building fragments - the likes of which include the Taj Mahal, Notre Dame of Paris and The Alamo - embedded into the Tribune Tower exterior. Then dine at any one of the 275-plus restaurants, from Michael Jordan's Steakhouse to the award-winning The Purple Pig.

By Katie Cooper

Fashion Outlets of Chicago Off of I-90, in the nearby Village of Rosemont, you'll have no trouble finding this unique shopping experience. With 130 outlet stores, take advantage of holiday savings from brands like American Eagle Outfitters, Barney's New York, Bose, David Yurman, Tory Burch, and more. As you move from store to store, keep an eye out for one-of-a-kind pieces of contemporary art. Permanent commissions and rotating exhibits can be found throughout the shopping center from acclaimed artists such as Daniel Arsham, Jen Stark and Derrick Adams. Equipped with a variety of services for traveling shoppers, enjoy complimentary parking every day of the week, in addition to their Level 1 concierge services, which offer luggage storage and foreign currency exchange. Downtown Galena

WHERE TO STAY Eagle Ridge Resort & Spa, 6,800 acres of post-shopping rest and relaxation The Irish Cottage Boutique Hotel, inviting accommodations with complimentary breakfast and year-round entertainment on the weekends at Frank O'Dowd's Irish Pub & Grill.

From city to small town, the charming Main Street of downtown Galena - nicknamed "the Helluva Half Mile" - is the perfect way to round out your Illinois shopping tour. With all of the hustle, bustle and high fashion out of the way, discover the best in antique, collectible, boutique and locally made goods. If it's wine you're after, it's wine you'll find at storefronts like the Galena Cellars Winery & Tasting Room and Rocky Waters Vineyard & Winery - both of which pair nicely with a trip to Chocolat' 229 for the finest in imported European chocolates. Or, if hard liquor is more your speed, look no further than the family-owned and operated Blaum Bros. Distilling Co. And don't forget to venture into one of their many specialty shops like Celebrity Hats, Galena Candle & Bath Company, and Northwest Designs Glass Studio - for gifts that are anything but cookie-cutter.

After a meal at Chicago Q, I am ready to face any kind of weather! This is a new addition to my favorites list! Located in the Gold Coast area, there is nothing more comforting than Southern BBQ! I love their delicious ribs, smokey mac & cheese, and not to mention the corn bread! Flor Sigaran

CHICAGO ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION HOTEL

A cheeseburger is welcomed during the cold nights. Something compact and easy to customize. I love listening to local acts and ordering a Chorizo burger from Reggies Music Joint. #ChicagoInsiders Tip: Don’t forget the egg, it’s the perfect finishing touch to every burger! Jonathan Rettemnier CORPORATE CONCIERGE SERVICES

During the winter time, I can’t get enough of chicken parmesan, and the best you can have is at Mia Francesca’s (I’m a frequent customer of the one in Lakeview). It’s filling and warm but not too heavy and the perfect dish to eat on a cold Chicago night enjoyed with a glass of great Pinot Noir.

A Flavorful Bang for the Buck

Go On a Culinary Adventure

Bar naan, this is one of the best deals downtown. For $14.95 (Mon.-Thurs.) or $17.95 (Fri.-Sun) start things off by noshing on the unlimited naan and sizzling hot tandoori chicken (which is promptly brought to your table) before digging into the seemingly endless options at the buffet. While some of the dishes change daily, offerings include their delicious chicken tikka masala swimming in a rich cream sauce, samosas, several types of curries just begging to be ladled over rice, and various vegetarian options like the paneer makhani—fresh cheese cooked in a creamy tomato sauce.

Drawing inspiration from the cuisine of Bombay and Delhi, as well as Indian street fare and homestyle tandoori cooking, the flavors you’ll experience here are plentiful, and more importantly, authentic. Seasoned curry-philes can expand their Indian repertoire beyond the admittedly-delicious mainstays and for those unfamiliar with Indian food, this is a perfect introduction. Dishes here are all elegantly served with gorgeous bowls and serving spoons, and the well-appointed and plush environs, makes it a great destination for a fancier night out or business dinner.

Sweet Treats Save room for dessert! The mango kulfi, or ice cream, is outstanding. So is the kheer, a rice pudding cooked with sweetened milk, raisins, and almonds.

YOLK IS CHICAGO’S POWER BREAKFAST SPOT By Amber Holst

TAVERN AT THE PARK: A Concierge Fave at Millennium Park

Something for Everyone

Easy Pick for Business & Breakfast

Hate Waiting? No Problem.

This concierge favorite is basically Chicago’s Mecca for eggs Benedict. You can’t go wrong with the classic variation, but their pot roast benny is a stand-out dish. Prefer sweet to savory? We love their banana nut bread French toast and their creative, rotating “pancake of the month” selections.

Let’s face it, for business meetings, breakfast is the new lunch. With three locations within a short 10 minute Lyft/Uber ride from McCormick Place, Yolk is the perfect spot for some deal-making and collaboration. Added bonus? The seasoned staff never makes you feel rushed. So go ahead, order that second cup of Joe and keep the conversation going.

We all know that breakfast, particularly on a weekend, may require a wait. Did you know that your concierge can help you jump the line? Just grab their business card and present it to the host once you arrive and your name will move toward the top of the list, essentially cutting wait time in half.

By Amber Holst Located at the North end of Millennium Park, Tavern at the Park‘s views and vibe pair perfectly with elevated American eats. A concierge favorite for the last seven years running, here’s a few reasons why this Loop stunner continues to impress. Ideal For Business Or Leisure Tavern at the Park boasts a menu of beautifully-crafted, upscale American eats and is the perfect spot to entertain clients when in town for a convention or on business. Its close proximity to Millennium Park is perfect for sightseeing before dinner, too. The Expansive Offerings The all-day menu here offers upscale comfort food with a twist. Must-try breakfast dishes are June’s Benedict with two poached eggs, avocado mash, smoked tomato and applewood bacon, arugula, and hollandaise sauce and the delectable Blueberry Bread Pudding French Toast. For lunch or dinner, start with the steak tavern burger sliders and treat yourself to their chicken pot pie, it’s one of the best to be found in Chicago.

The Treehouse In addition, they have one of Chicago’s most sought after rooftop decks, The Tavern Tree House. The atmosphere and views are unmatched. The Tree House features a full service bar, lounge or table seating and the atrium, a glass-enclosed area that is both air conditioned and heated, perfect for year round enjoyment! Head up to The Treehouse rooftop lounge to take in the views while you relax with a cocktail or local brew. We’re partial to the Tarragon Ballroom with Glenmorangie Scotch Whiskey, tarragon, blackberry, and lime or the Redheaded Step Child, their delicious take on sangria. Have a Big Group? Tavern at the Park has you covered, offering five unique rooms and a myriad of customization options.

It’s Classic Chicago Situated in a landmark brownstone from 1897, Chicago’s history is framed on every wall of this legendary eatery, including the city’s only complete portrait set of every Chicago mayor (not even City Hall can boast that honor). Complementing the experience, the veteran staff here are practically experts on this place’s history. For the Meat With 26 cuts of meat on the menu, this icon is home to one of the last blade saws in the city and does all of their butchery in-house. Looking for a different cut? No problem. If it fits in the broiler, they’ll cook it. So far they’ve managed to fit a 100-ounce cut in there. Perfect Pairings Pair your meal with a glass or bottle from their award-winning, international wine list that includes more than 650 selections from 350 different wine makers. Looking to splurge? Why not opt for a vertical tasting? Their Seafood’s No Slouch

5 Reasons to Experience the New Chicago Chop House By Amber Holst

CATCH 35

Start out with their jumbo shrimp cocktail. Matthew McCahill, the owner, is an alumni of the legendary (though now defunct) Nick’s Fishmarket. He’s one of the only people that has their old cocktail sauce recipe and has revamped the one here, making it cult-status worthy. Irish Influences Sure, there are green walls and a bar on every floor, slabs of butter, and one heck of a stuffed baked potato. But the real gem here is the Irish Coffee. The owner drew his inspiration from San Francisco’s Buena Vista Cafe. It’s really the best we’ve had in Chicago.

Monteverde Restaurant & Pastificio

The italian dishes at this splashy haven for Italian fare in River North are made from scratch every day, so don’t miss out on their farro risotto with duck confit, carbonara in a jar, short rib ravioli, and 12-hour braised ossobuco. Make sure to save room for the pillowy and delicious bomboloni.

A favorite destination for handmade pasta, the vibe at this West Loop restaurant is casual but the food makes the evening feel special. Take note of the cooking demo-style mirror angled above the bar that reflects the pasta-making magic going on below. Make sure to try the skate wing schnitzel and the cacio e pepe, it’s pasta perfection.

What looks like a classic Chicago tavern on the outside is actually a cozy Italian joint offering up a hearty menu of classic Italian-American plates and appetizersized pizzas in the South Loop.

A cozy Italian-American comfort food haven in River North. Nosh on house-made pastas, antipasti, Italian entrées and daily specials, and wash it all down with negronis and traditional wicker-clad carafes of wine.

Zoolights at the Lincoln Park Zoo always get me in the holiday mood. All the family, concentrated lights and music are great. And the fact that you can still walk into the animal houses and see the critters at night is so fun!

For those who have the grace and balance, the ice skating Sky Rink at The Peninsula Hotel is absolutely stunning with all of the lights and decorations! #ChicagoInsiders Tip: Warm up with a delicious meal after at Shanghai Terrace across the street!

I love taking pictures and capturing some of nature's beautiful artwork, as well as the city scape. It is best around the holidays when the large Christmas tree is hung in Millennium Park, it’s the perfect photo op!

Drinking hot cocoa and watching the ice skaters at the Maggie Daley Park is always a fun past time! The rink is a twisting ribbon so it’s fascinating to watch if you’re not much of a skater, and the holiday music is always soothing.

SKYDECK'S A MUST-DO CHICAGO EXPERIENCE By Melissa Stroner It’s a Chicago Bucket List Thing People flock from all over the world to visit the tallest observation deck in America, and considering the unparalleled experience, it is certainly warranted. Skydeck is on the 103rd floor of the Willis Tower. You can see up to 50 miles away on a clear day, and in addition to views of every major Chicago attraction, four surrounding states are visible.

On any given tour (they offer over 85 different ones!) you may traverse the underground Pedway, cross bridges covered in history, or rumble above and below the streets aboard the ‘L’ train.

Chicago Trolley

Chicago Crime Tours

For a good overview of the city, Joan Hohs, a resident concierge at MILA Chicago, suggests a hop-on hop-off tour. She likes Chicago Trolley noting that the docents are friendly and knowledgeable, they stay on schedule, and are reliable. They have 13 stops across the city that you can hop on and off as much as you want.

With Chicago’s undeniable history, Chicago Athletic Association Hotel’s chief concierge Joyce Fong believes no visit would be complete without going on Chicago Crime Tours. Stand at the exact spot where John Dillinger was shot, visit the location of the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre, peek into Frank “The Enforcer” Nitti’s secret vault and tunnels, and more.

The Photo Ops Whether you’re looking to recreate the famous scene from “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” where Ferris, Cameron, and Sloane press their heads against the windows and gaze down on the city or get the straight-to-Instagramworthy Ledge to Ledge shot, this Chicago icon offers some of the best photo opportunities in town. Walk on Air If you are up for a good adrenaline rush, take on the adventurous Ledge! These four glass boxes beckon the brave to step out beyond the edge of the building and stare at the city with a clear view from every angle… and 1,353 feet straight down to the streets below.

THE EVOLUTION OF BLUE MAN By Katie Cooper

In 1997, three mysterious outsiders took up residence at Chicago's Briar Street Theatre (3133 N. Halsted St.). With gallons of paint, PVC pipes, Twinkies and their signature stares, they awed audiences young and old through their world-renowned performance art. And through a combination of their unique art, music, comedy and technology, they celebrated stories of human connection on a global scale. Twenty-one years and thousands upon thousands of shows later, Blue Man Group takes to the stage with new content to fall in love with, debuting for the first time worldwide right here in Chicago. So, sit back, stay sharp and put on your poncho, as we explore this beloved production's newest innovations Never Before Seen (or Spelled) Instruments "The Big Drum" may be self-explanatory, but that's where familiarity among this showcase of newly constructed and remastered instruments ends. From the part deconstructed xylophone, part drum hardware of the trigger vibes, to the spinulum, with its clear plastic disk affixed to a slide guitar-esque, stainless steel neck, these expressive new sounds are as much seen, as they are heard.

Original Music Compositions

2360 Hoppy Hour Thursdays: Because puns make happy hour better. Drink like a Chicagoan 1,000 feet up as you enjoy drinks from Revolution Brewing and KOVAL Distillery. 2360 Sky Trivia Fridays: Bring your A-Game (and smart friends) for trivia at the deck’s Bar 94. Added bonus? Prizes. One of which is winning a round of drinks on the house. 2360 Sky Yoga Saturdays: Start your day with some sun salutations from 1,000 feet closer to the sun from 9-10 a.m. This sells out, because it’s cool (and only $15). So namaste, don’t delay.

2360 Sunday Fundays: Kids won’t let you sleep in late? Then round up the tykes and bring them up for a little magic, a little music, and a lot of great views.

When not on stage, the men in blue are Grammy-nominated recording artists with multiple albums to their name. Their latest studio album titled "THREE" features the piece "Vortex," which will make its theatrical debut in Chicago through the whirling sounds of both PVC pipe and spinulum. Cultural Relevance In true Blue Man style, cultural commentary will unfold through new pieces such as Fast Friendz! - a comical exploration of what happens when our connection to the virtual world leaves us void of connection in real life.

CHICAGO MAGIC LOUNGE: YOU MUST SEE IT TO BELIEVE IT By Katie Cooper

If the word “magic” only brings to mind images of top hats, white rabbits, and the blank stares of jaded children at a birthday party; awaken your curiosity with an experience that’s sure to challenge all previous assumptions. Walk down N Clark St. and you may just pass the entrance, an unassuming laundromat by original design. But just beyond the illusion, lies a theater unlike any found worldwide — constructed for magic and magic alone. Surprise Around Every Corner As much a part of the magic as the show itself, the expansive, deco-style lounge transports you back in time. Warm hues and vintage artwork from magic’s golden age invite the eye to wander as you pass from one room to the next; traveling from the cocktail bar, to the cabaret, to the closeup gallery, and back again. History Comes to Life The visual appeal of every thoughtful detail ingrained into this space is nothing without the history that inspired it. Chicago-style magic, after all, dates back to the early 1900s when Matt Schulien first began entertaining patrons of his father’s restaurant with closeup sleight of hand. Fast-paced and personality-driven, the magicians of Chicago Magic Lounge breathe new life into a history no longer forgotten and consistently deliver on authentic entertainment for adults of all ages. PRO TIP: Stumble into the bar area’s bathroom for a trick of the eye your instagram won’t want to miss.

OUT & ABOUT WITH A CONCIERGE

5 LATE NIGHT GO-TO’S by Kaitlyn Barcal By Jose Gonzalez Concierge, St. Jane Hotel If you make all the stops I included here, you are in for a night to remember! Make a stop at Arbella, an intimate lounge featuring an array of globalinspired craft cocktails. Be sure to also order a few small plates off their food menu. My personal favorites include their Korean Fried Chicken (KFC) and pork belly tacos. With drink in one hand and a taco in the other, you'll feel all the right vibes while listening to the sets of resident DJs — mixing genres from disco to classic Chicago house. For group outings, set your sights on the Blind Dragon. Located below the American supper-club Mason, the recently opened Blind Dragon provides you with three private soundproof karaoke rooms for singing the night away. Although Sake drinks are a favorite here, this red lit bar serves up some eclectic drinks and punch bowls to share between the whole crew.

If you're ready to explore the club scene, keep these three nightclubs within walking distance on your radar. Sound Bar brings some of the most sought out DJs to the Chicago area. This two-floor nightclub has nine bars and four different lounges to dance in. A great way to start would be from the lower level, where resident DJs spin everything from latin to hip-hop. Then make your way to the main floor, where featured headliners entertain the crowd with projected visuals, lasers and a state of the art audio experience. Spybar is an intimate basement club that loves its electronic, house and techno beats. Up and coming talent usually opens for the headliner, and may even provide you with the ultimate back to back (B2B) set as they hype the crowd, sharing the same booth. Electric Hotel keeps you in the VIP mix with private booths for bottle service and three different bars to refill your glass. This new, swanky nightclub has open dance space, made complete with a bird cage for added intrigue.

EXPLORE THE COLLECTION

Where Art Meets Fashion, contemporary exhibits now on display at the Fashion Outlets of Chicago By Katie Cooper

A Mural of Massive Proportions

Algorithmic Artwork

Empty Bottles Full of Empathy

From Chicago to Brooklyn, Paris to London, the multidisciplinary work of Derrick Adams reimagines the Fashion Outlets of Chicago’s main entrance. The vibrant colors and geometric patterns of the seven-story mural pay homage to the late Patrick Kelly — celebrated fashion designer with a penchant for patterns and bold statements. Along the grand walkway, Kelly’s channeled energy is illuminated, literally, through Adams’ accompanying light installation, Fashion Accessories.

Towards the mall’s northwest corner, one of these staircases is not like the others. It’s where local artist Chad Kouri brings an extension of his Art For All series to life. With every step, colorful geometry unfolds; but the real interaction with this piece is realized in the form of a text message. Using an algorithm programmed by Kouri himself, every text received is responded to with a corresponding piece of custom art, displayed on rotation through a monitor at the top of the stairs.

Previously on display at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Chicago-based artist Edra Soto gives new life (and meaning) to liquor bottles that once littered the streets of her East Garfield Park neighborhood. Through still-life format, Soto asks viewers to examine these complex forms as representations of both pleasure and escape from socio-economic oppression. Open 24 Hours is the latest of many rotating exhibits found in the shopping center’s common area.
