FOOD AND DRINK It’s time to add some serious pounds after all the winter workouts and what better place than at Baconfest

Chicago (p.45). It is cured meat madness as over a hundred chefs create delicious bacon concoctions that last year included dishes like bacon risotto, bacon-wrapped maple and beer-brined pork belly with jalapeno bacon jam, and bacon mousse Drumsticks. If you’re feeling thirsty then enjoy the outdoors with a fresh brew at the American Beer Classic (p.45) held on Soldier Field where 75 breweries will offer over 200 unique beers.

DINING THROUGH THE DECADES

By Amanda Cooper @CP_Chicago If you have been out and about in Chicago’s dining scene lately you may feel like you’ve taken a ride in a DeLorean back in time. These restaurants and bars will have you feeling very nostalgic: LATE 1940S SUPERDAWG DRIVE-IN I could not write an article about dining through the decades without mentioning Superdawg Drive-In (p.16). This classic drive-in has been around since the late '40s. Maurie Berman, a recently returned GI from World War II studying to be a CPA, and his high school sweetheart Flaurie, a teacher in Chicago Public Schools, decided to open up a seasonal business during their free summer months.

That business, Superdawg Drive-In, opened in 1948 and its famous 12-foot-tall superhero hot dog icons have been a Chicago staple ever since.

Their signature menu item fits the theme with “it was not a wiener – not a frankfurter – not a red hot – but their own exclusive Superdawg.” Small changes have been made through out the years including a second location,

â Superdawg Drive-In but Superdawg stays true to its roots delivering impeccable carhop-style service and great Superdawgs.

1950S FORMENTO’S Formento’s (p.28) is one of the newest additions to the ever-expanding West Loop Restaurant Row on Randolph Street. The classic red-sauce Italian restaurants of the 1950s were an inspiration for Formento’s menu.

The deep red booths, dark wood, and alabaster fruit arrangements makes you feel like you could be dining next to Sinatra or Marilyn Monroe. I believe the term swanky came out of my mouth a few times. My personal favorite dishes were Nonna’s meatballs and the spicy bucatini. Wine enthusiasts will enjoy looking over the huge 600-variety wine list.

1970S THE BRASS MONKEY The Brass Monkey (p.28) was inspired by 1970s design, pop culture, music, and food. Owner Marc Bushlala describes the dining experience as “being at a dinner party on Warren Beatty’s yacht with Tom Jones entertaining and Julia Child cooking.” There

by American cuisine from the ‘70s.

My friends and I were intrigued by the “Hits of the '70s” menu, so we ordered the classic cheese ball served with fancy Ritz crackers, sloppy joe sliders, and French bread pizza. All these dishes brought back wonderful childhood memories; however, the standout dish was the squid-ink linguini from the classic menu.

1980S HEADQUARTERS BEERCADE I am an '80s child. I wore neon everything, my hair was permed (thanks, mom), my bangs were teased, and I loved Alf. So you can only imagine my excitement when I walked into Headquarters and saw WWF and Hulk Hogan on the TV and the large selection of pinball and arcade games. If you work up an appetite playing “Donkey Kong” you can order from Headquarters’ (p.20) elevated bar menu. Kimchee deviled eggs, mozzarella in crispy filo, and beef stroganoff are just a few of the delicious items off the menu.

The bar has a great rotating beer list and craft cocktail selection. The 18th Street, a tequila and watermelonjuice-based drink, was the perfect fuel to my “Tetris" marathon.

By Alexis DeBrunner Here’s a look at four boutique Chicago distilleries you won’t want to miss.

RHINE HALL Known for their apple brandy, this family-owned, small distillery located in West Town creates their unique brandy with Michigan apples. The hours here are limited, only being open on Thursdays and Saturdays, but finding the time is worth it to see their bright and charming tasting room with a classic long wooden bar. Behind the bar visitors have the chance to see the distilling set up, including the bike used to chop the apples, through the windows while they enjoy their cocktails. Rhine Hall (p.33) offers five brandy cocktails, tours of the space on Saturdays, and a drink list that includes spirits and simple cocktails that will highlight their product’s versatility.

KOVAL Meaning “black sheep” in Yiddish, Koval (p.32) aims to embody their name by forging ahead to do something new and out of the ordinary.

Priding themselves on being Chicago’s first distillery since the mid-1800s,

this craft distillery run by a husband and wife team creates organic whiskeys, liqueurs, and specialty spirits.

The rustic distillery embraces a grain to bottle mentality with every step of their distilling process being thoughtfully monitored, producing “single barrel” spirits so each bottle can be traced all the way back to the organic farmers their raw materials came from. Koval offers whiskey work-

CH Standing out as a vodka producer in a town that’s all about whiskey, CH Distillery (p.32) created a sleek modern atmosphere to go beyond just tours and tastes of their product. After taking the time to teach about the science behind their specialty spirits, CH decided a small taste wasn’t enough for their touring patrons and built a full cocktail bar in their distillery where visitors could enjoy their drinks anyway they like them: on the rocks, shaken and cold, or even in one of their original cocktails. Thinking even that wasn’t enough though, CH brought in chefs to their team and now offers a menu of perfectly paired food and bar snacks to go along with their drinks, bringing more than just liqueur to the table. CHICAGO DISTILLING COMPANY Located in the hip Logan Square neighborhood, Chicago Distilling Company (p.32) is a minimalist distillery and bar that is the perfect place for a spring night. In a space that resembles a renovated mechanic’s garage, the exposed brick and open roll up doors create a fun atmosphere for visitors coming to try their white whiskey. With a craft cocktail menu at the bar fixed right in front of a glass wall that reveals their distilling process, trying their Chicago-named spirits is relaxing and enjoyable. If you can’t find a seat at the bar, the space accommodates even the larger crowds with high tables and stools in front of the open wall on the street side.

NORTH Once a thriving setting for the roaring `20s, Chicago’s up-and-coming Uptown (M5;B3) neighborhood is without question a gem of the city. An icon of Uptown is the Green Mill Cocktail Lounge (p.35). Once operated as a speakeasy during Prohibition and has been visited by patrons and performers such as Charlie Chaplin, Al Capone, Billie Holiday, and Frank Sinatra (to name a few). Today the bar is a thriving `40s era cocktail lounge where anyone can relax, enjoy a few drinks, and listen to some of the best jazz this side of anywhere. Another historic Uptown landmark is the Aragon Ballroom (p.35). Concert-goers can now see Tenacious D where Frank
