publisher/editor's note

Happy Concierge Day, Chicago By official proclamation from Mayor Rahm Emanuel, the team here at Concierge Preferred is proud to announce that the City of Chicago celebrated its fourth annual Concierge Day in Chicago on January 30, 2014. Concierge Preferred reached out to the Mayor’s Office in 2011, requesting that the city create a day dedicated to all concierges—from residential and corporate to hotel and other types—as a way to formally pay tribute for all they do to make Chicago the world class destination it is. Since then, we have been active in working directly with the Mayor’s Office to successfully designate the last Thursday of every January as Concierge Day in Chicago. To date, Chicago is the only city that has such a designation. We are happy that Chicago is recognizing the various types of concierge and the things that they do in our wonderful city. They are center stage answering questions and coordinating important functions that enable tourism to thrive and are constantly creating memorable experiences for their guests. Did you know that each year concierges make almost five million referrals? That includes more than 1.3 million dining recommendations, 1.1 million shopping suggestions, 658,000 nightlife referrals and almost 1.2 million tips on cultural attractions. It is because of that hard work, research, and insider's knowledge that we polled concierges to compile a list of their favorite places around town, which is what this issue is all about. So read on, explore the city like a local, and make sure to thank your concierge for all that they do. Sincerely,

Jim Gilligan Publisher & Vice President

and practical ideas for novice green thumbs and expert gardeners alike. Themed Do Green, Do Good, this year’s show is a visual shopping trip of ideas for transforming any green space into one that’s beautiful, enjoyable, and memorable. Whether you’re looking for cool tools that help your garden grow, great gifts for your favorite gourmet, or nifty gadgets for the gardeners of tomorrow, you’ll find the latest green and eco-friendly products at this top-rated show. GO GREEN Usher in the global Irish holiday and watch as Chicago dyes its eponymous river green—bright Kelly green—before its annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade (p.60). Since 1962, the Chicago Journeyman Plumbers dye the river green at 10:45 a.m. the day of the parade, which

Another favorite St. Patrick's Day celebration is the South Side Irish Parade (p.60), which takes place on March 16 in Chicago’s historic Beverly neighborhood. á The Spice House

CONCIERGES’ TOP SHOPS By Amber Holst @CP_Chicago FROM OFF-THE-BEATEN PATH SHOPPING DESTINATIONS TO LOCAL GEMS, HERE’S A LOOK AT SOME OF CONCIERGES’ FAVORITE PLACES TO SHOP AROUND TOWN ONE-STOP SPOTS There are several concierge favorites wrapped into one at The Shops at North Bridge (p.15) including sweet spots Candyality (p.16) and Vosges Haut-Chocolat (p.17) in addition to the iconic Nordstrom department store, known for their impressive shoe selection. 900 North Michigan Shops (p.15) elevates the mall experience with high-end retailers while Water Tower Place (p.15) continues to be a Chicago landmark offering more affordable options. SWEET (TAKE) HOME CHICAGO If you love Chicago’s restaurant scene, then take home the flavors

ä Candyality

â Vintage finds in Andersonville

with signature Chicago neighborhood (think Greektown, Chinatown) spice blends from The Spice House (p.17) in Old Town (p.17). And a culinary adventure simply would not be complete without a finger-licking bag of caramel and cheese—or the “Chicago Mix”—from Garrett Popcorn Shops (p.16), an undeniably true Chicago snack.

â Vosges Haut-Chocolate STYLISH STRETCHES State Street (p.17), that great street, is a historic retail stretch that’s home to meccas like Macy’s on State (p.14) and Block 37 (p.15). Another iconic street is The Magnificent Mile (p.17), offering a plethora of eye candy and the occasional bargain. No matter if you’re choosing—or looking—Oak Street (p.17) is home to Chicago’s high-end heavy hitters and is basically our version of Rodeo Drive… without the travel hassles. LOCAL FLAVOR Lincoln Park (p.17) is home to numerous concierge-approved attractions like the Chicago History Museum (p.54) and Lincoln Park Zoo (p.64), but it’s also one of Chicago’s premier shopping destinations offering everything from independently-owned shops to high-end home furnishing stores. Along the neighborhood’s multiple shopping corridors you’ll see high-end stores and bohemian boutiques mixed with restaurants,

ä Oak Street

making it a great option for an all-day shopping excursion. No matter if you’re looking for adorable personalized stationary, shopping for the perfect baby gift, or upgrading your kitchen wares, you are bound to find what you’re looking for here. Whether you’re searching for something high-end, designer, bridal, or that one-of-a-kind thrift store find, Chicago’s Wicker Park & Bucktown (p.17) neighborhoods are your go-to shopping destination. The retail range here spans from Alexis Bittar and Marc by Marc Jacobs to Akira (p.12) and Carhartt. Traditionally a Swedish neighborhood, Andersonville (p.17) has morphed into one of the city’s newer shopping destinations and is a charming respite from the bustle of downtown. From home-design shops with vintage finds to eclectic boutiques for accessories, an afternoon strolling up and down Clark Street is well worth the trip.

âä Blackbird

WESTWARD BOUND By Amber Holst @CP_Chicago WEST LOOP Let’s face it, you’re either into communal dining or you’re not. If you’re like me—and simply adore the experience—then venture over to avec (p.38) and fall in love with its convivial spirit and killer small plates. Whether you’re looking to nosh on some sharable items like their whipped brandade and their chorizo-stuffed medjool dates or just relax with a selection of their specialty cheeses and a bottle of wine, you simply can’t go wrong at this West Loop mainstay. Looking for a sleeker fine dining experience? Then head next door to avec’s sibling restaurant Blackbird (p.38). Opened in 1997, this groundbreaking spot upped the ante of modern classics and continues to turn out truly creative and attainable cuisine.

ä Embeya

A runaway favorite since its opening, Girl and the Goat (p.39) serves up amazing grub at reasonable prices. The culinary imagination of Chef Stephanie Izard never ceases to amaze, whether it is green beans dressed with fish sauce vinaigrette or crispy pig cheeks with over-easy eggs. If you’re looking for a breakfast option, or more laid back dinner experience, Izard’s Little Goat Diner (p.39) across the street is an ideal spot. A trendy spin-off of the classic greasy spoon concept, here you can delve into updated variations on diner staples like the Sloppy Goat and heavenly biscuits and gravy. Named one of Esquire’s “Best New Restaurants" for 2013, Embeya (p.39) is one of Chicago’s restaurants-ofthe-moment and showcases refined Asian cuisine—with a heavy emphasis on Vietnamese dishes—in a dashing atmosphere. On a recent visit, we simply couldn’t get enough of their perfectly-crisp, skin-on duck leg. A BIT FURTHER OUT Just a short cab ride from Randolph Street’s restaurant corridor is the charming Piccolo Sogno (p.36). In the summer, their lush outdoor patio is a huge draw for locals but this place is not to be overlooked during the colder months. In addition to their massive, all-Italian wine list they serve up some

19

â Piccolo Sogno

â Big Star

â Avec of the best Italian cuisine in town. And what would a good Italian meal be without pasta? Here’s an off-menu secret for you: Piccolo Sogno offers half portions of all of its pasta and risotto dishes. I recommend this if only for the opportunity to try more of their brilliant dishes! Go with the rich, meaty Lasagnette, a combination of wide noodles with veal meatballs and a broth full of mushrooms or the Tortelli. Part dive bar and part taqueria, Big Star (p.21) is a honky-tonk serving up inexpensive, excellent food and drink in the center of Wicker Park. Led by James Beard Award-winning chef Paul Kahan, Big Star offers gussied-up Mexican street food with the motto aqui vendemos sabor or here we sell deliciousness. And, folks, indeed they do.

maps & transportation

M1

Navigating Chicago may seem daunting, but the city was set up on a simple grid system with State Street dividing east and west coordinates and Madison Street dividing north and south. Miles are divided into segments of 800, so for example, Chicago Avenue at 800 north is one mile north of Madison Street. If you prefer to ride rather than walk, taxis are plentiful and public transportation, especially the “L” train, is easy and inexpensive to use. The “L” also runs to both airports. See the listings below for more transportation options in the Windy City.

AMPS & ALCOHOL: BEST PLACES FOR LIVE MUSIC AND DRINKS IN CHICAGO by Joel Mora CAN’T QUIT THE BLUES It would be a mistake to assume all blues songs are the same, and it would be a mistake to think all blues and jazz venues are the same. The one commonality is that you can find good live music any night in Chicago. Muddy Waters is without a doubt the father of Chicago blues, but Buddy Guy is keeping it alive and his Legends (p.50) club is a great amplifier of some of the world’s most outstanding music. The proof is in the scroll of stars that have performed there such as Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Robert Plant. In addition, there’s always the possibility of Buddy Guy himself taking the stage. However, don’t sneeze at the local acts that frequent the venue because there is nothing like the grit of Chicago Blues. When you walk into Kingston Mines (p.51) you leave all pretensions behind because this venue will slap it out of you with the music coming out of there. With two stages for you to see two live bands in one night it isn’t uncommon to be running back and forth from room to room. You can witness Nellie “Tiger” Travis leave her heart on

the stage with her powerhouse vocals and have your face melted by Joanna Connor’s guitar shredding in the next room. You are likely to leave the club with your face stuck in this-musiccan’t-get-any-more-stank mode. For some visiting time with a close relative of the blues make sure to visit Andy’s Jazz Club (p.50). Jazz at 5 is a Chicago tradition dating back to when newspaper workers would get off of work and head to Andy’s for drinks and

music. All jazz genres are represented and the intimate atmosphere and delicious food will keep you scatting to the music for hours. TAPPED OUT Grab the doors of the Old Town Pour House (p.48), fling them open, and say hello to your new home for the next two, three or six hours. This two-floor bar is a fusion of all your favorite bars. Go to the Pour House for dinner, watch your favorite team on the tube, and celebrate when they win with dancing and over 90 beers on tap. If this doesn’t convince you I have three words for you: pork shank wings. If you want to give the hops a break grab a cocktail at Sable Kitchen and Bar (p.48). When a bar makes their own bitters and syrups you know you’re in for a some luscious libations. Whiskey Wednesdays are the best for

ä Kingston Mines

ä The Redhead Piano Bar

discovering new distilleries or new whiskey doctrines through their tastings. Make sure you soak up some of that alcohol with delicious food from chef Heather Terhune, a recent contestant on Bravo’s “Top Chef.” For a taste of what classic American bars used to be made of grab a chair at The Redhead Piano Bar (p.51). The sign of the winking redhead welcomes you downstairs to joyous piano players who are as good with a joke as they are with a song. Make sure you dress the part as casual attire is not allowed, which adds to the vintage feel of the bar. We do warn that without alcohol it’s hard not to sing along so your pipes might end up tired after a few martinis.

á Millennium Park

THE INS AND OUTS OF CHICAGO CULTURE:

CONCIERGE MUSTS FOR ANY CHICAGO VISIT by Joel Mora GREAT OUTDOORS Millennium Park (p.58) is the Swiss Army Knife of cultural attractions in Chicago. You can spend a week here just revisiting the park to go to a dance performance at the Harris Theater, or ice skating at McCormick Tribune Plaza. You realize how special a park it is when you’re sharing a bottle of wine on a picnic facing Frank Gehry’s bandshell and the city lights come on behind it as you’re listening to a live concert. Of course you can’t miss a visit to the crown jewel—Cloud Gate. Head north and stop when you’ve hit the polar bear at the Lincoln Park Zoo (p.64). Open every day and it being free, the Zoo is a perfect place to drop in for a monkey visit or stay a few hours admiring the giraffes. Help welcome the baby gorillas, kangaroo, and rhino to the city and stop to observe

ä Wrigley Field

ä Lincoln Park Zoo

the meerkats, who might have the most personality across the 35 acres. Just a couple miles north take in some baseball history as Wrigley Field (p.64) celebrates its 100th birthday. Just because it’s not baseball season doesn’t mean you can’t take a tour, which start in March and are longer than tours done on game days. Walking in the locker room where Babe Ruth sat before going out and hitting his famous “called shot” is something that leaves you breathless. MUSEUM MAJESTY Museums in Chicago aren’t just for the fanny pack hordes and nothing proves this more than the Museum of Science & Industry (p.56), the largest science center in the Western Hemisphere covering almost 14 acres. Aside from being able to step into a tornado, watch baby chicks hatch, and tour an actual WWII German submarine you aren’t going to want to miss the “Treasures of the Walt Disney

53

â Museum of Science & Industry

Archives” comprising of over 300 artifacts including original sketches, costumes, and more from Disney’s 90 years. Make sure you take a drawing lesson to learn how to sketch like a Disney animator. At the Art Institute of Chicago (AIC) (p.54) you could spend days just standing in front of Vincent Van Gogh’s “Self-Portrait.” Hidden treasures await you in every corner from American classics like “American Gothic” to post-impressionist masterpieces like “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte.” Make sure to visit the Thorne Miniature Rooms to see what makes AIC stand out above the rest. After seeing a portrait from a classic master make sure you check out a portrait done by present-day master Chuck Close at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) Chicago (p.56). Host of Frida Kahlo’s first U.S. exhibition in 1978, MCA Chicago has always been a beacon for cutting-edge art. Nothing says that more than MCA’s newest exhibit “MCA DNA: Warhol and Marisol,” which puts the work of pop artists Andy Warhol and Marisol side by side. If you’re still in Streeterville and spot a large mansion you’ve probably spotted a Chicago gem—the Driehaus Museum (p.54). This restored Gilded Age home is not just a symbol of the decadence of the late 19th century but a symbol of the artisans who

â Driehaus Museum ä Art Institute of Chicago

transformed wood, marble, and tile into a majestic sanctuary. Don’t miss the “Louis Comfort Tiffany: Treasures from the Driehaus Collection” exhibit that features over 60 remarkable works of stained glass stretching from lamps and vases to windows.

Looking for more to explore? Then you're in luck as there's no shortage of things to do around town.

leandro traveled 5,000 miles to bring you his lamb chops. As you can imagine, a few stories came along for the ride. The Southern Brazilian open-fire cooking method called “churrasco” has been handed down for centuries, with each new generation of gauchos adding their own touch of culture and refinement. Taste that tradition today at Fogo De Chão. Gaucho chefs like Leandro prepare, cook and serve a variety of grilled meats. Enjoy tender steaks, sausage, chicken, lamb, ribs, and Leandro’s favorite, a traditionally-seasoned sirloin called “picanha.”
