Happy Concierge Day, Chicago By official proclamation from Mayor Rahm Emanuel, the team here at Concierge Preferred is proud to announce that the City of Chicago celebrated its fourth annual Concierge Day in Chicago on January 30, 2014. Concierge Preferred reached out to the Mayor’s Office in 2011, requesting that the city create a day dedicated to all concierges—from residential and corporate to hotel and other types—as a way to formally pay tribute for all they do to make Chicago the world class destination it is. Since then, we have been active in working directly with the Mayor’s Office to successfully designate the last Thursday of every January as Concierge Day in Chicago. To date, Chicago is the only city that has such a designation. We are happy that Chicago is recognizing the various types of concierge and the things that they do in our wonderful city. They are center stage answering questions and coordinating important functions that enable tourism to thrive and are constantly creating memorable experiences for their guests. Did you know that each year concierges make almost five million referrals? That includes more than 1.3 million dining recommendations, 1.1 million shopping suggestions, 658,000 nightlife referrals and almost 1.2 million tips on cultural attractions. It is because of that hard work, research, and insider's knowledge that we polled concierges to compile a list of their favorite places around town, which is what this issue is all about. The 106th edition of the Chicago Auto Show (p.59) returns to McCormick Place Feb. 8-17, pulling together some of the hottest models of the season at the nation’s largest car show. Domestic, imported, antique, competition, and concept cars will be on display and for some extra excitement, take a spin on one of their indoor test tracks. CELEBRATE DIVERSITY Celebrate Chicago’s diverse ethnic communities at Navy Pier’s (p.58) fourth annual cultural tribute: Neighborhoods of the World (p.60). Over the course of eight weeks, beginning on Feb. 16, head to the Crystal Gardens and experience the many cultures of our city by enjoying authentic live music, dance performances, cuisine, and folk art from various ethnic Chicago com-
munities. This event runs from noon to 3 p.m. and admission is free. This year’s lineup includes: China (Feb. 16); Lithuania (March 2); Mexico (March 9); Greece (March 16); Philippines (March 23); and Africa (March 30). If you’re like me—and simply adore the experience—then venture over to avec (p.38) and fall in love with its convivial spirit and killer small plates. Whether you’re looking to nosh on some sharable items like their whipped brandade and their chorizo-stuffed medjool dates or just relax with a selection of their specialty cheeses and a bottle of wine, you simply can’t go wrong at this West Loop mainstay. Looking for a sleeker fine dining experience? Then head next door to avec’s sibling restaurant Blackbird (p.38). Opened in 1997, this groundbreaking spot upped the ante of modern classics and continues to turn out truly creative and attainable cuisine.

A runaway favorite since its opening, Girl and the Goat (p.39) serves up amazing grub at reasonable prices. The culinary imagination of Chef Stephanie Izard never ceases to amaze, whether it is green beans dressed with fish sauce vinaigrette or crispy pig cheeks with over-easy eggs. If you’re looking for a breakfast option, or more laid back dinner experience, Izard’s Little Goat Diner (p.39) across the street is an ideal spot. A trendy spin-off of the classic greasy spoon concept, here you can delve into updated variations on diner staples like the Sloppy Goat and heavenly biscuits and gravy. Named one of Esquire’s “Best New Restaurants" for 2013, Embeya (p.39) is one of Chicago’s restaurants-ofthe-moment and showcases refined Asian cuisine—with a heavy emphasis on Vietnamese dishes—in a dashing atmosphere. On a recent visit, we simply couldn’t get enough of their perfectly-crisp, skin-on duck leg. A BIT FURTHER OUT Just a short cab ride from Randolph Street’s restaurant corridor is the charming Piccolo Sogno (p.36). In the summer, their lush outdoor patio is a huge draw for locals but this place is not to be overlooked during the colder months. In addition to their massive, all-Italian wine list they serve up some

â Avec of the best Italian cuisine in town. And what would a good Italian meal be without pasta? Here’s an off-menu secret for you: Piccolo Sogno offers half portions of all of its pasta and risotto dishes. I recommend this if only for the opportunity to try more of their brilliant dishes! Go with the rich, meaty Lasagnette, a combination of wide noodles with veal meatballs and a broth full of mushrooms or the Tortelli. Part dive bar and part taqueria, Big Star (p.21) is a honky-tonk serving up inexpensive, excellent food and drink in the center of Wicker Park. Led by James Beard Award-winning chef Paul Kahan, Big Star offers gussied-up Mexican street food with the motto aqui vendemos sabor or here we sell deliciousness. And, folks, indeed they do.

Navigating Chicago may seem daunting, but the city was set up on a simple grid system with State Street dividing east and west coordinates and Madison Street dividing north and south. Miles are divided into segments of 800, so for example, Chicago Avenue at 800 north is one mile north of Madison Street. If you prefer to ride rather than walk, taxis are plentiful and public transportation, especially the “L” train, is easy and inexpensive to use. The “L” also runs to both airports. AMPS & ALCOHOL: BEST PLACES FOR LIVE MUSIC AND DRINKS IN CHICAGO by Joel Mora CAN’T QUIT THE BLUES It would be a mistake to assume all blues songs are the same, and it would be a mistake to think all blues and jazz venues are the same. The one commonality is that you can find good live music any night in Chicago. Muddy Waters is without a doubt the father of Chicago blues, but Buddy Guy is keeping it alive and his Legends (p.50) club is a great amplifier of some of the world’s most outstanding music. The proof is in the scroll of stars that have performed there such as Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Robert Plant. In addition, there’s always the possibility of Buddy Guy himself taking the stage. However, don’t sneeze at the local acts that frequent the venue because there is nothing like the grit of Chicago Blues. When you walk into Kingston Mines (p.51) you leave all pretensions behind because this venue will slap it out of you with the music coming out of there. With two stages for you to see two live bands in one night it isn’t uncommon to be running back and forth from room to room. You can witness Nellie “Tiger” Travis leave her heart on

This two-floor bar is a fusion of all your favorite bars. Go to the Pour House for dinner, watch your favorite team on the tube, and celebrate when they win with dancing and over 90 beers on tap. If this doesn’t convince you I have three words for you: pork shank wings. If you want to give the hops a break grab a cocktail at Sable Kitchen and Bar (p.48). The sign of the winking redhead welcomes you downstairs to joyous piano players who are as good with a joke as they are with a song. Make sure you dress the part as casual attire is not allowed, which adds to the vintage feel of the bar. We do warn that without alcohol it’s hard not to sing along so your pipes might end up tired after a few martinis.

You can spend a week here just revisiting the park to go to a dance performance at the Harris Theater, or ice skating at McCormick Tribune Plaza. You realize how special a park it is when you’re sharing a bottle of wine on a picnic facing Frank Gehry’s bandshell and the city lights come on behind it as you’re listening to a live concert. Of course you can’t miss a visit to the crown jewel—Cloud Gate. Head north and stop when you’ve hit the polar bear at the Lincoln Park Zoo (p.64). Open every day and it being free, the Zoo is a perfect place to drop in for a monkey visit or stay a few hours admiring the giraffes. Help welcome the baby gorillas, kangaroo, and rhino to the city and stop to observe

the meerkats, who might have the most personality across the 35 acres. Just a couple miles north take in some baseball history as Wrigley Field (p.64) celebrates its 100th birthday. For the first time, The Orchid Show will provide an infusion of warmth and color to guests visiting the Chicago Botanic Garden this winter. The visitor greenhouses will be filled with orchids on trees, in the ground and suspended on hanging structures.
