EXPLORE 6 GO-TO LAKEFRONT STOPS From downtown heading north to Edgewater, here’s a look at this local’s favorite Lakefront Trail spots to enjoy a meal or drink.

7

By Mark Kraemer Concierge, Hotel Palomar Ohio Street Beach Caffè Oliva, located at the foot of Navy Pier, offers Mediterranean-inspired fare, playful cocktails, and is tucked away on a beautiful stretch of the lakefront. If you’re hungry, I recommend their grilled calamari and splitting one of their flatbreads alongside a glass of wine. Oak Street Beach Situated upon the sandy shores of Chicago’s most famous Beach, Oak Street Beach Food + Drink is a lush oasis –complete with real palm trees!—offering some of the city’s best people watching including beach goers, Michigan Avenue shoppers, and the Lakefront fitness buffs. North Avenue Beach At The Shore Club grab yourself a cabana or daybed and treat yourself to their fun frozen drink options like Frosé All Day, Frozignon Blanc, or a Cold Fashioned. Looking for something shareable? Opt for the large format Beach Party cocktail that’s served in a giant copper pineapple or a flamingo. Diversey Harbor Located inside the newly renovated Theater on the Lake, the skyline views at The Lakefront Restaurant pair perfectly with the lauded Midwestern fare and beverages. Cozy up on their spacious patio or snag a spot inside by the floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook the Lake, bike path, and Lincoln Park. Montrose Beach The Dock at Montrose is a sprawling, 3,000-square-foot beach bar offering up burgers, tacos, salads, and live music just a stone’s throw from the water. Another perk is that it’s also dog-friendly, so it’s a popular stop for locals after bringing their canine companions to the nearby dog beach. Hollywood Beach

HE LAKESIDE PATH AT T MONTROSE HARBOR

A

Probably the “beachiest” of all, Nacho Mama’s is a great, casual spot right off Hollywood Beach. A favorite with locals, this spot is ideal for a later afternoon snack (yes, they do have nachos. And yes, they’re great) and a couple of cocktails while soaking up both the sun and atmosphere.

4 Can’t-Miss Neighborhood Fests By Trisha Carey

WELLS STREET ART FESTIVAL June 9–10 Concierge Alex Yu, from the Viceroy Chicago Hotel recommends this massive arts festival. With over 225 artists representing different disciplines he says “there are enough excellent pieces of art to trick me into thinking I’m being cultured.” In addition to art there’s also local food, drinks, entertainment, and a children’s play area.

CHICAGO PRIDE FEST AND PRIDE PARADE June 30 Jonathan Rettemnier, concierge at the 900 North Michigan Shops recommends this annual festival and parade. Pride Fest is held the weekend before the annual Pride Parade and both celebrate Chicago’s LGBTQ culture and community. “It’s great to see so many people come together and celebrate diversity in our amazing city.”

MIDSOMMARFEST June 8–10

WEST FEST July 6–8

Where else can you hear an ABBA cover band, wear a viking helmet, sip on a glögg slushie, and support an awesome cause? Steve Satek, Independent Concierge says “Midsommarfest of course!” Fun fact? All of the proceeds from beer and t-shirt sales at the fest’s Swedish Stage benefit the Swedish American Museum.

This annual fest in Chicago’s West Town community is recommended by Bobby Gonzalez, chef concierge at The Gray Hotel. Aside from its local food and drink offerings, he loves that it always brings topnotch music talent that is ready to blow up-as well as familiar favorites—to its stages.

4 SPOTS FOR ALFRESCO DINING Concierges’ share their favorite spots to eat out of doors. By Amber Holst

THE DUCK INN

A

The Duck Inn

Tanta

Parson’s Chicken & Fish

Piccolo Sogno

“Where else can you dine on a patio that’s a literal backyard facing neighbors?,” says Philippe Gills, chef concierge at the Langham Chicago. Occupying a corner tavern in the Bridgeport neighborhood, The Duck Inn serves up creative duck dishes—as the name would imply—in addition to American eats ranging like cheese curds with hoppy mayo and a delectable duck fat dog (Chicago style, of course).

Judson Corrie, chef concierge at the Waldorf Astoria, says this Peruvian gem is simply “made for summer.” When the weather accommodates, he says nothing is better than a meal on their secluded rooftop. Their Latin menu offers so much, which is why Corrie always seems to find an exciting new dish. “Make sure you pair whatever you select with El Chingon,” he says. “It’s a sublime combination of Jalapeno Tequila and Mezcal.”

Delicious frozen cocktails, hush puppies, fried chicken, and ping pong? Talk about a winning combination, which is why this Logan Square hot spot is a favorite of Mat Chapman, concierge at the JW Marriott Chicago. Reminiscent of attending a backyard BBQ, do yourself a favor and order one of their negroni slushies. Paired with some buttermilk fried chicken and crunchy cool sides? You’ve got a can’t-beatit outdoor dining experience.

While the elegant interior is an ideal setting for an intimate dinner, it’s the lush patio out back that is the real draw for Rebecca Starodub, concierge at the Radisson Blu Aqua. This local favorite offers some of the best rustic Italian cuisine to be found and their tranquil patio is the perfect setting to enjoy it. Here’s an off-menu secret for you: they offer half portions of all of their pasta and risotto dishes.

OUT & ABOUT WITH CONCIERGE By Trisha Carey 1 KIMSKI: Kyle Francsis, concierge at the Ritz-Carlton Chicago, recommends the Dressed Fries from Kimski. This Korean Polish street food joint serves fries dressed with soy cream, chili oil, nori, sesame seeds, and scallions.

3 GT PRIME: Shannon Boland, chef concierge at LondonHouse Chicago says the crab and avocado salad was a light, refreshing, and beautiful dish and is the perfect start to an amazing, chef-driven modern steakhouse experience.

2 SUNDA: Luis Torres, concierge at Trump International Hotel & Tower enjoys the Pancit Canton at Sunda. He says everything in this dish works perfectly together. The pork, shrimp, and marinated noodles balance each other out.

4 THE DEARBORN: For Flor Sigaran, concierge at the Chicago Athletic Association Hotel, this Pastrami Hash & Eggs was just what she needed to get her day started. Sofrito potatoes, pastrami, Brussels sprouts, gruyere, and eggs... no wonder it’s a favorite.

5 Reasons to Experience the New Chicago Chop House By Amber Holst

It’s Classic Chicago Situated in a landmark brownstone from 1897, Chicago’s history is framed on every wall of this legendary eatery, including the city’s only complete portrait set of every Chicago mayor (not even City Hall can boast that honor). Complementing the experience, the veteran staff here are practically experts on this place’s history. For the Meat With 26 cuts of meat on the menu, this icon is home to one of the last blade saws in the city and does all of their butchery in-house. Looking for a different cut? No problem. If it fits in the broiler, they’ll cook it. So far they’ve managed to fit a 100-ounce cut in there. Perfect Pairings Pair your meal with a glass or bottle from their award-winning, international wine list that includes more than 650 selections from 350 different wine makers. Looking to splurge? Why not opt for a vertical tasting?

Daily Lunch Buffet: Mon.-Fri. 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Sat.-Sun. 11:30 a.m.- 3 p.m. A la Carte Dinner: Sun.-Thurs. 5:30 p.m.-10 p.m. Fri.-Sat. 5:30 p.m.-11 p.m.

Their Seafood’s No Slouch Start out with their jumbo shrimp cocktail. Matthew McCahill, the owner, is an alumni of the legendary (though now defunct) Nick’s Fishmarket. He’s one of the only people that has their old cocktail sauce recipe and has revamped the one here, making it cult-status worthy. Irish Influences Sure, there’s green walls and a bar on every floor, Irish butter, and one heck of a stuffed baked potato. But the real gem here is the Irish Coffee. The owner drew his inspiration from San Francisco’s Buena Vista Cafe. It’s really the best we’ve had in Chicago.

5 Reasons Catch 35 is a Concierge Favorite By Amber Holst

DINNER & A SHOW Just a short walk from all of the major downtown theaters, Catch 35 is the go-to pre-theater dining spot and a concierge favorite. Fun fact? If you use their valet, the cost ($12) is deducted from your check. Bonus? You don’t have to pick your car up until after the show.

Alfredo Caliva, concierge at the Westin Michigan Ave., recommends their Tree House terrace that overlooks the park. He loves their seared tuna tacos and fried calamari for appetizers and the halibut with lobster succotash or braised short ribs for dinner are his faves!

Looking for a great spot and raw bar right across from “The Bean”? Shannon Boland, chef concierge at LondonHouse Chicago suggests Remington’s. “They have the outdoor seating, and great food,” she says. “For something light and refreshing try the tuna poke appetizer.”

Hooters is a Go-To for Game Day By Katherine Pulaski World-Famous for a Reason No matter if you’re looking to delve into some gooey Lotsa Tots or dip fried pickles in some ranch (theirs is one of our favorites), it’s all about well-executed bar eats here. Known globally for their wings, we’d be remiss not to wax nostalgic about theirs. It’s what they’re known for after all. With 17 craveable sauces and dry rubs—including Texas bbq, Carribean jerk, and garlic habanero (to name a few)—get your Wet Naps ready and prepare to do some work.

The Concept

Coffee Bar

Your Voice Matters

Located right off the 606 Trail at Milwaukee Avenue in Bucktown, this recipe-testing kitchen brings a new breakfast twist to the neighborhood. Here, diners get to play a part in sampling wish-list concepts while enjoying unfettered access to the culinary creative process. What may wind up on menus at Yolk’s seven area locations? You get to be a judge.

Unlike traditional Yolk restaurants, the layout of this concept is different. In addition to a seated dining experience, guests can enjoy a full coffee bar and grab-and-go items for those doing the trail. Complete with a space to work, and even a full bar, the test kitchen model carries over here, too, enabling partners like Metropolis Coffee to product test their latest and greatest.

To round out the experience guest are invited to leave their feedback on what they loved (or didn’t) on a giant chalkboard wall. A fun and informal way to get good honest feedback, it also doubles as a perfect Instagram photo opp. Did you love those jet black crepes with pulled duck you tested? Let them know!

4 Must-Try Ice Cream Shops

19

By Amber Holst Splendid e Jeni’s Ice Cream

2 Reasons Tavern at the Park is a Local Fave

Located at the North end of Millennium Park, the views and vibe here pair perfectly with elevated American eats.

By Katherine Pulaski Great Food

Killer Views

A favorite place to grab a bite before or after visiting Millennium Park the all-day menu here offers upscale comfort food with a twist. Must-try breakfast dishes are June’s Benedict with two poached eggs, avocado mash, smoked tomato and applewood bacon, arugula, and hollandaise sauce and the delectable Blueberry Bread Pudding French Toast. For lunch or dinner, go for the steak tavern burger sliders and to their chicken pot pie, it’s one of the best to be found in Chicago.

Nothing says summer in Chicago quite like being on a rooftop. Fortunately for you, Tavern boasts one of the best in town. Head up to The Treehouse rooftop lounge to take in the views while you relax with a cocktail or local brew. We’re partial to the Tarragon Ballroom with Glenmorangie Scotch Whiskey, tarragon, blackberry, and lime or the Redheaded Step Child, their delicious take on sangria. Feeling peckish? Tavern at the Park’s full menu is offered up here, too.

Mario’s Italian Ice

The flavors here range from seasonal--made with fresh, whole fruits and vegetables--to traditional chocolate and vanilla flavors made with bean-to-bar chocolate and fair trade-certified vanilla. For Viceroy Chicago Concierge Alex Yu, though, it’s all about their Pistachio & Honey. Amorino What Judson Corrie, chef concierge at the Waldorf Astoria, describes as a “little charmer” this Gold Coast boutique scoops up Italian gelato in its signature style: a delicious gelato flower. Now, Corrie says, it’s time for the eternal dilemma… hazelnut or pistachio?

Does Italian ice count? If so, Mario’s in little Italy is a Chicago must according to Colin Bertling, concierge at the Hotel Palomar. “I love the watermelon and lemon flavors, but everything is great here,” he says. “It’s a quintessential summer tradition for Chicagoans.” Margie’s Candies This old school Bucktown mainstay has been a part of the local candy scene since 1921 and is a favorite of Flor Sigaran, concierge at the Chicago Athletic Association Hotel. This sweet spot is half candy store, half sit-down ice cream parlor, and offers the best sundaes in town.

Your eyes will easily jump from the medical instruments, paintings, and statues to the breathtaking Gold Coast building they are housed in. Over 7,000 medical artifacts, 600 art pieces, over 5,000 medical books, and more are housed in this 20th-Century mansion that resembles Le Petit Trianon, a French chateau on the grounds of Versailles. Here iron lungs, Peruvian skulls with holes drilled in them, hearing aids from different eras, statues of medical greats, murals depicting important moments in medical history, and more will enlighten those with or without any medical knowledge.

SNL: The Experience

Steps away from the Magnificent Mile, the Richard H. Driehaus Museum is a fascinating and rare example of the palatial homes erected by the wealthy of America’s Gilded Age. The galleries are elegantly furnished with pieces from the most celebrated designers of the late 19th and early 20th Century, such as Louis Comfort Tiffany and the Herter Brothers. These objets d’art are presented in harmony with the immaculately-restored interiors and surviving furnishings of the Samuel M. Nickerson Mansion, which was designated as a Chicago landmark in 1977.

Live from the Museum of Broadcast Communications, it’s SNL: The Experience. Go behind the scenes at 30 Rock as you wind your way through the bi-level exhibit featuring 500 artifacts—including props, costumes, scripts, and set replicas—from the 43-year history of Saturday Night Live. Structured by each day of the week, which has a specific purpose and goal at SNL, the exhibit concludes on Saturday. It’s here you’ll find yourself standing in a complete replica of Studio 8H. Grab a seat for the monologue, musical act, and rotating sketch before posing for a photo at a remake of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler’s Weekend Update Desk.

6 Go-To Party Bars Experience Division Street, it’s where Chicago comes to party. By Amber Holst

The Lodge One of Chicago's most iconic bars, the Lodge Tavern is a historic hangout for regulars, tourists, and celebrities alike. Open to 4 a.m. daily and 5 a.m. on Saturdays, come pull up a seat, snack on some peanuts, and discover what all the fuss is about. With multiple dance floors playing hits ranging from the ‘50s and ‘80s rock to disco and hip hop, this late-night fave is sure to get your body moving. Come experience the “best time you’ll never remember”.

CONCIERGES’ FAVORITE LIVE MUSIC PARTY BAR Wallflowers beware: With two dueling piano players, a raucous atmosphere, and audience participation near 100%, find out for yourself why Howl at the Moon is a concierge favorite and one of Chicago’s go-to places to let loose.

Buckets ‘o Booze

It’s One Helluva Show

Sure, there’s a variety of cocktails, shots, and beers; but what fun is that when you and your squad can sip from an 86 ounce bucket of booze? If 86 ounces seems too much to handle, try the mini buckets, 32 adorable ounces of deliciousness that are perfect for two to share.

Part bar and part concert, it’s a non-stop party with live music performed in a high-energy setting. Let’s just say, this isn’t your average live music bar. Get on the dance floor and join the talented musicians in rocking out to your favorite songs. They play everything from pop to classic rock to hip-hop.

What are their Favorite Requested Songs?

The More You Know

Howl at the Moon’s entertainers love nostalgia! Any song that reminds them of high school is right up their alley. As of right now, they love playing Demi Lovato’s “Sorry Not Sorry” and Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop The Feeling”.

Howl at the Moon throws some awesome decade parties (the most popular being their ‘80s and ‘90s throwbacks), so make sure to ask your concierge when the next one is happening.

6 SUMMER COCKTAIL FAVES

Concierges reveal their summer drink of choice and where to get it By Gwen Mora

John Dillon

Gloria Leverence

Dillon’s drink of choice is Leña Brava’s Leña Ice, a refreshing concoction of mezcal with yellow Chartreuse, lime, cucumber, and serrano. Served in a Collins glass, the serrano “packs a punch,” he says, “but the cucumber leaves you cool and refreshed.”

On a recent visit to Ella Elli in Lakeview, Leverence raves about the Pink Squirrel cocktail. Her new go-to for summer, it features Bulleit Bourbon, Crème De Noyaux, white crème de cacao, and vanilla bean ice cream.

Ricardo Lemus

CONCIERGE, RITZ-CARLTON CHICAGO

Waydown, the rooftop lounge atop the Ace Hotel, tops Lemus’ list of places for a refreshing libation. He loves their They Oughta cocktail with La Luna mezcal, Bruto Americano, Alessio Bianco, grapefruit, and lime.

For Francsis, nothing says summer quite like a pilsner-style beer at Ph.D Pub. “They have an outdoor patio with a grill, where you can bring your own food and use it for free, and they have a bags set where you can play a pick up game with other patrons,” he says.
