PUBLISHER’S LETTER

A NEW LIFE W

e are living in a very interesting time right now. We are under a Stay-At-Home Order at our homes, alone or with our loved ones. It is a time where we’ve been forced to be with each other 24/7. How many times in your life have you had that kind of opportunity? I see this lockdown as a time to slow down and take care of yourself like a mom taking care of her baby. Give yourself permission to cry or start doing things that you’ve never done before. My friend Eva, for example, has always wanted to live in a warm state like Florida. She saved money, found a new apartment and a new job in Florida, and is just waiting for borders to open, and go to Florida. Some other people that I know have started taking online classes to raise their credentials. I see more and more people beginning YouTube channels and starting to create their own content and a new life.

KATARZYNA (KASIA) SZUMAL PUBLISHER

This is a great opportunity to do things that you never had time to do before. If you are feeling stuck and want to move in a new direction with your life, and you need some support and community, I encourage you to read Theresa Puskar’s article, Community Call to Action. She is starting a series of weekly Zoom calls about how to quiet your mind and raise your vibration to attract more things that you want in life. Also, for more about the situation that we are in right now, you can read Alan Cohen’s article, Birthing a Planetary Reset. Alan shares more about the changes that we are all going through and how we can be reborn and start a new life. Every moment in our life is an opportunity for us to grow! Last week, I went to the woods and I met a father with three kids on bikes. You could see this man’s presence and he was not rushing. The kids were smiling and enjoying the bike ride with their father. For thoughts on parenthood during lockdown, you can read Tiffany Hinton’s article, Motherhood During Crisis. This issue is full of touching, uplifting and inspirational articles that will help you smile a little wider, see a little more clearly and hear a little better. Remember, we are not alone; there is a Higher Power/God/Creator that is watching over us at this moment! If you feel that you need more support and healing during this time, see our Business Directory for independent practitioners and local businesses that are available to serve you at this time. Many local practitioners and businesses offer phone, web or distance healing options. Even when we are physically apart, we are here to encourage one another! Until next time,

[COMMUNITY Q&A]

ASK ALECIA by Alecia Rice

Q: I’m a hot mess! I need some tools to deal with sheltering in place. What might I do to get through this long, challenging experience? — Cabin Fever A: Dear Cabin Fever,

Through the lens of higher consciousness, this is about so much more than catching a virus or sheltering in place. Conscious attention can be placed on the following to mine the internal gems that these circumstances present as higher opportunities for personal evolution. Sometimes this is hard to do because so much energy is spent in survival mode. Yet with each success, we’ll arise from this situation with a sense of self-actualization that will serve us well in the future. Embody presence: Presence is one thing that we’re being nudged towards, more than virtually anything during this global timeout with no outside distractions. Fear shows us when we’ve lost our presence and strung our thoughts into the future. A sense of presence allows us to respond and meet the needs of others, as well as our own, which is so important right now. With practice, it can evolve into a sanctuary for the mind and nervous system. Set boundaries: Boundaries are coping mechanisms that set up safe spaces for us. It’s important for us to draw clear, spoken boundaries around what we’re not willing to experience during these

stay-at-home times. We need to make sure that these boundaries have “teeth,” or don’t even bother setting them. Without solid repercussions to back them up, they have no power. Without set boundaries, we will continue to be victims of our own circumstances, which builds an inner sense of helplessness and disempowerment. Serve others: Seeking ways we can be of service to support others to ease their load expands our hearts and our sense of connectedness. It can be as simple as shopping for an elderly neighbor, offering free online support or services for whatever your specialty is, or donating to food pantries that are struggling to meet the needs of the community. Service to others raises us up out of our own concerns and makes this challenging situation better for all of us, because it takes a village. Triggers and judgment: Many of us are dealing with first chakra survival issues. These issues can trigger us to contract in fear and lean into judgment. Triggers and judgments lie in the conflict between how we think things should be contrasted by how they actually are. When a trigger or judgment arises, we should ask ourselves why this thing bothers us, to trace that strand within ourselves. This highlights the root of our discomfort, which lies within ourselves, not in the other person or circumstances which we have no control over. The Serenity Prayer deals with stepping into this acceptance. This is known as “energy management.”

Face fear: Fear is magnetic and only attracts more of what we don’t want. It makes us uncomfortable, in a subconscious attempt to trigger healing for a greater sense of empowerment and self-mastery. Although uncomfortable, we should sit with and question our fears so we’re no longer being held hostage. Death is one of our greatest fears, which makes it wise to seek out resources— such as Death Cafés—that share philosophies that quell fears around this subject. Making peace with this subject can usher in a sense of freedom. Forgiveness: The randomness of this virus highlights the fact that none of us are guaranteed tomorrow. This is the time to have those most important conversations around life, death, and love. Forgive and ask for forgiveness to mend those relationships that are broken so you have no regrets. Let people know NOW how much they mean to you. Embrace the flow: There’s not much that any of us can do to control our circumstances, so it’s important to be flexible and flow with what is. Seek the silver linings instead of reaching back, as new growth comes through the dissolution of patterns. Breaking routines can cause us to feel vulnerable, yet turning our attention towards those insecurities can bring new awareness that can strengthen us. What positives might you find in the breaking of your patterns? In the end, one of our most important tools is to nurture gratitude for what is, regardless of what isn’t. Someone always has it better or worse than we do. Let’s try our best to remove comparisons by finding ways to sit with a grateful heart. This activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which decreases cortisol bringing about a sense of well-being which can be of great benefit to all of us. [ALL ABOUT TOWN]

COMMUNITY CALL TO ACTION April 14, 2020 by Theresa Puskar This is the moment you have been waiting for. What if your soul knew that this day was coming? What if you, as a conscious being, decided to come to the Earth at this time in history to be a peace warrior—to be a conduit for raising the energy frequency of the Earth? I believe that you are! As an inspirational audiobook producer at Nightingale-Conant Publishing for over 20 years, I worked with America’s most enlightened spiritual teachers. What I noted was that just about every one of them prefaced the coming of a time when there would be a shift—a time when we would be confronted with vast change. They were talking 8

| CONSCIOUS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE MAY 2020

about this time. I believe that we are at a tipping point on this Earth and we have a choice to make that will affect the evolution of this planet and many generations to come. The bottom line, we are being called to choose between fear and panic, or love and faith. The choice is ours. Which path will you choose? The good news — Dr. David Hawkins’ Scale of Consciousness. Before I go any further, I have some powerful information that I want to share. When I produced a couple of audiobooks with the late, enlightened master, Dr. David Hawkins, he revealed that one conscious individual energetically contributed to the world

in a positive way to the equivalent of 100,000 lower frequency individuals. So, when you rise up from the ashes of your despair and fear when you join with a community of higher consciousness individuals to raise your energy, you are shifting the world in a mighty way. The best way you can help the world is to heal yourself. You are likely already aware of the fact that the best way you can help the world to heal is to heal yourself. If you are like me, you have seen the vast opposition and partisanship in the politics of our nation, reflecting the polarity you have been feeling within yourself. As you noted the lack of

reverence and respect for the Earth, you saw your own lack of self-respect. If we choose to go deeper and take time to do an emotional inventory, we will see the part that we have each played in our demise. While always staying committed to treating ourselves with the utmost compassion, we can start to heal the parts of ourselves that created the inner turmoil which is reflected in our outer world. We have been given a huge gift—the solitude to sit with ourselves and explore our inner world and the time to contemplate. In doing so, we can cultivate the witness-self and grow in our sense of awareness and inner peace. Gratitude creates the greatest shift but can take effort. What I have found to be the most transformational part of my personal journey of late has been experiencing gratitude. While it isn’t always easy to get to that place, I find that when I do, my energy completely transforms and I am able to carry on throughout the day from a launching pad of positivity. So, wherever I might be upon awakening, I find that shaking out any stuck energy through some fun dance, then going through a gratitude process is incredibly effective at shifting my energy. You’ve decluttered your homes, now it’s time to declutter your brain! If I’ve learned anything during this quarantine, it’s that there’s no time like the present to fulfill our soul’s calling. I recently wrote a book on cultivating mindfulness and creating more joy in your life, 8 Ways to De-Clutter Your Brain. I provide readers with 12 emotional profiles and 25 experiential exercises to take them from where they are to where they want to be. Based on the eight-step program I outline in the book, I am thrilled to start hosting weekly virtual Brain De-Clutter Coaching Sessions. I look forward to supporting you in identifying and calming your fears, strengthening your faith and removing any blocks you have towards manifesting your life’s dreams. My intention with each session is to encourage forward motion,

celebrate successes and have a heck of a lot of fun while doing so! The first FREE 20- to 30-minute Zoom session will be held on Tuesday, May 19th at 7:00 p.m. To join go to: https://zoom. us/j/96948062642?pwd=LzFwYWR wMWNmMnZkc2o2WnUvSUF1dz09, Password: 582731. I look forward to assisting you in achieving your heart’s desires, and in doing so, helping you to raise the energy frequency of this magnificent Earth! Turning Leaders into

CONSCIOUS LUMINARIES by Lisa Brazelton The changes being forced upon us from the COVID-19 virus have altered the very landscape from which we view life. The way we see, think and feel has been tinted with new colors from the Divine Artist’s palette, where light shines on the darkness of dysfunction and illuminates the connective web we all embody. Although some may not like the sound of our world experiencing “Oneness,” the virus affects us all because we are all connected together in this human matrix. What happens in one town, city or country impacts the collective. Likewise, what happens to one business, industry or trade is even more impactful. Devastating losses in revenue due to the halt of business productivity has affected lifestyles and for many the very fabric of existence. The change in our current landscape also changes the way we do business, the way we see commerce, and the way we lead our organizations. 10

| CONSCIOUS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE MAY 2020

Leaders have been given an incredible opportunity to be a living example of how to lead teams and organizations through being in concert with, rather in conflict with each other. Because most leaders are positioned to influence others, it is critical to envelop change and be greater than current circumstances. It is a time to step up to the plate and become a beacon of light, a conscious leader, and even more, a Conscious Luminary.

WHAT IS A CONSCIOUS LUMINARY? Whether you are a leader of a company, a team or a family, being a Conscious Luminary requires mastering yourself. In a time when we are adjusting to the drastic changes in life, the journey into self-mastery is needed now more than ever to lead with empathy, balance, creativity and purpose.

Self-mastery is the intricate weave of emotional intelligence, deep intuition and surrender. It requires absolute presence through detached observation, and it can only be achieved through the continual discernment between destiny and programmed beliefs, between right soul action and judgment, between outside influence and intuition, and between the chaotic mind chatter and the whispers of truth. To understand self-mastery, Conscious Luminaries must allow an almost alchemical process to occur where the old self dies and the new self transforms through deep introspection, contemplation and concentration. Stepping into the role of becoming a Conscious Luminary requires the gift of pause—to reflect and yet continually pivot during life’s extremities. It requires the test to discern the truth from the illusion of who we think we are at the surface.

Above all, to be a Conscious Luminary, one must spend a lifetime closing the gap between how they appear in the world and who they truly are.

THE SCIENCE BEHIND HOW WE CHANGE OUR MIND Every time we have a thought, different areas of our brain surge with electrical current and release hundreds of neurochemicals. Through advanced brain-scanning technology, we can now see that every thought and experience we have causes neurons to connect and disconnect—like a superhighway—in ever-changing patterns and sequences. Neuroplasticity, which is our natural ability to learn new knowledge and have new experiences, develops new networks or circuits of neurons that literally change our mind. Conscious Luminaries do not indulge in recycling experiences that don’t feel good and succumb to old programming. Instead, they get comfortable in the discomfort and overcome their limitations to challenge themselves to reach new potentials. Change is normally challenging because we are trying to do something different within the same environment. We tend to think the same thoughts, feel the same feelings and react the same way in the same routine. This causes us to keep using the same patterns and combinations of neural circuits in our brain, which tend to become hardwired. Hardwiring is not a bad thing, for it helps us become automatic with skills such as driving a car. However, to change something in our lives, we have to cause the brain to no longer fire in the same old sequences and combinations. We have to create a new superhighway by disconnecting the old neural circuits and rewiring our brain in new patterns of nerve cell connections. Every thought produces a biochemical reaction in the brain. Quicker than the speed of light, the brain releases chemical signals that are transmitted to the body, where they act as messengers of the thought. The extraordinary new field of psychoneuroimmunology is

demonstrating the connection between the mind and the body (how we think and feel), and map out that when we feel positive, inspired and happy, our brain manufactures chemicals, such as dopamine, that make us feel joyful. Conversely, our brain makes another chemical called ACTH, which signals the body to produce secretions from the adrenal glands, when we feel threatened or aggressive. The thoughts that produce these chemicals in the brain allow our bodies to feel exactly the way we were just thinking.

HOW TO OVERCOME OBSTACLES DURING COVID-19? One of the greatest tragedies plaguing the world is our inability to reach an awakened state of consciousness. However, this current crisis has given us an opportunity to wake up and move into sovereignty with our own health, mind and well-being. When we become Conscious Luminaries, we are creating a blueprint, structure and foundation for those whom we influence. By discerning our struggles, disappointments and fears through integrating different mindfulness practices, such as meditation, we transform old patterns. Transformation awakens consciousness and choosing to either engage or not engage in negative thoughts becomes an option, not simply a default setting. Discernment is the opposite of denial. We are not the victims of our minds. When we have made a commitment to feel good, a lot of decisions become easier to make. Asking questions that deepen the journey within expands our consciousness and the outcome of that expansion recognizes our humanness while living in higher vibration with those around us. We have the ability to rise above the current environment, to discern and acknowledge that the environment is eliciting certain behavior from us and to choose either to leave that state of mind or to transform ourselves to the greatest potential. The leaders that will prevail during this time are the

ones who embrace the mindfulness movement and provide opportunities for their teams to grow from the inside out. This is becoming a Conscious Luminary—a conscious leader. Conscious Leaders can give the gift of pause to each and every employee because they know the supernatural effects of their own mindfulness practices. Once more, being a beacon of light through supporting customers is another byproduct of mindfulness. Being a lighthouse means all can see your illumination and have a sense of comfort in this difficult and uncertain time.

CHANGE FROM THE INSIDE OUT The dramatic changes being forced upon us create isolation, worry and despair. We may be deeply uncomfortable, but this forced control to stay home can provide an opening for inner self-work and movement. The process of going within to reflect and reset into a new, more awakened person is the blessing being bestowed on us. Ask people in your organization what’s important to them. For many, it is a time of great reflection and an opportunity to exercise or reevaluate core values, such as honesty and integrity. What new values can be explored and what old patterns diminished? By supporting employees to fully explore their life’s purpose and tap their gifts, leaders play an important role in creating a healthy work culture. Organizations that embrace this philosophy empower employees to nourish their innerselves and work towards goals that are personally, as well as professionally, meaningful to them. [FROM THE HEART]

BIRTHING A PLANETARY RESET by Alan Cohen The world is not the same place it was just a few months ago. The pandemic and economic downturn have put humanity’s activities on pause and caused nearly everyone to make significant lifestyle changes. We are required to stay home, conduct business from our living rooms, homeschool and face family issues we have shoved under the rug for a long time. We are commanded to not touch each other or our faces. Just a short time ago no one imagined any of this would happen. When the pandemic began, I wondered, “What good could possibly come of this?” Now some answers are obvious. For one, we are present with our families at a new depth. A friend sat on her porch and enjoyed a meaningful two-hour conversation with her 14-year-old son—an interaction that would never have happened otherwise. A Japanese woman who had a big argument with her parents before she went on a trip has returned to live with them and has made peace with them unlike ever before. A Portuguese woman, who was denied 12

| CONSCIOUS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE MAY 2020

entry to England for a work visa, discovered two frail, elderly people in her apartment building who she is now cooking for and picking up their prescriptions. People are connecting with old friends and making new acquaintances from the far reaches of the globe via online video chats. We are valuing loved ones we belittled and jobs we once complained about. Meaningful moments are happening that we were too busy to enjoy. It takes a lot to get our attention, but this event has succeeded. Let us reframe it not as a curse but as a wake-up call. Albert Einstein said, “In the middle of every difficulty lies opportunity.” “What can I do to maintain my inner peace and help others?” we ask. “How can I use this experience to improve the quality of my life after the lockdown has been lifted? Who am I as I now recognize I am united with every other person on the planet in a common goal?” The answer is simple: Be the light amidst apparent darkness. Your joy, gratitude and creative self-expression serve humanity

and the planet far more than anxiety. Misery has enough company. The world needs people whose minds are clear, confident and connected to Higher Power. We have meditated, prayed, done yoga, sat at the feet of gurus and aligned our chakras at Sedona vortexes. Now is the time to put our training into action. Bootcamp is over. Now we must apply what we know and live the teachings instead of just talking about them, waiting for non-physical entities to save us, or hoping our kundalini will rise. It’s showtime. The pandemic will pass and the economy will recover. But we will have experienced an event unprecedented in human history—a planetary reset. We will have reprioritized our values and recognized the preciousness of our lives and those we love. We will be glad we have jobs to go to, schools to educate our children, the ability to venture out of our homes, the exhilaration of walking in nature, and the safety to touch each other. Things we now take for granted or even complain about will reveal themselves to be blessings. Let us rise to higher and abiding appreciation for the immense good in our lives. Let us use our time and experience wisely. The beginning is near. Alan Cohen is the author of many inspirational books including A Course in Miracles Made Easy. THE LUNAR WOMAN by Shakta Kaur Did you know that a woman is 16 times stronger, more intuitive and more powerful than a man? Did you know that a woman has 11 moon centers located in different areas of her body? That she moves to a different moon center every two and a half days? And, that she sees the world during those two and a half days through the quality of her moon center? It’s all true! Woman’s basic nature is like the Moon which waxes and wanes, while man’s basic nature is like the Sun which is continuous and constant.

waxing and waning of the Moon. In the 28 days of the menstruation cycle, a woman’s moon can be found in one of the 11 different areas of the body. They are called the 11 limbs of the woman.

THE MOON CENTER SEQUENCE A woman’s moon center sequence begins in the womb. In fact, the moon center sequence begins just after conception. This is the subtlest cycle that any woman can experience. It contains the answers to many patterns that mystify both the Divine Feminine…and the Divine Masculine!

Ear Lobes: intelligence, concern with values and ethics

Often a female is labeled as emotional or unpredictable, always changing her mind, delivering the unexpected from day-today. The reality is that women have 11 moon centers that move to different areas within the body every two and a half days. These moon centers relate to different qualities and are used to process one’s environment and emotions. The female fluctuates every two and a half days like the 14

| CONSCIOUS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE MAY 2020

THE 11 MOON CENTERS Hairline: steadiness, stability, divine clarity, reality Cheeks: unpredictability, emotional instability Lips: verbal, interactive, communicative Back of the Neck: sensitivity, romance Breasts: divine compassion, giving (can be to the point of foolishness) Belly Button/Back: insecure, exposed, vulnerable Inner Thighs: confirmative, verifying, affirming Eyebrows: illusionary, imaginative, visionary Clitoris: external, talkative in social settings Vagina: depth, sharing in personal or cultural cycles How does the Divine Feminine use the knowledge of knowing what moon center she’s in? Well, the two and a half days when the moon is in the lips is a great day to give a public talk, teach

a class or counsel a client. On these days, the female is super communicative and interactive. However, scheduling an important meeting during the two and a half days the moon is in the belly button/back would not be ideal! Those days are when the female feels most exposed, insecure and vulnerable. Schedule that important meeting during the two and a half days the moon is in the inner thighs instead! If that’s not an option, practice meditation or another technique to increase confidence, concentration and determination. Knowing one’s moon center pattern can provide a great deal of insight into a female’s emotional ebb and flow. Once she understands her personal cycle, she’ll have a compass to align with her day-to-day feelings, responses and interactions. A woman’s moon center sequence is unique. It will not necessarily follow the order listed above. It will not follow her siblings or her female friends’ cycles. The way the moon moves varies in each and every woman. It often takes a few months to accurately map one’s moon center sequence. Before going to sleep at night, spend 7 to 11 minutes to ask yourself, “What moon center was I in today?” Some women use a pendulum to help determine which moon center they are in. Others have their partner help them by using muscle testing. Or, partners help by simply providing plain old verbal feedback! After a few months, a woman’s pattern should become clearer. If the moon center pattern is still not clear, there are meditations to help increase one’s sensitivity and balance the moon centers. One of these meditations is called Kirtan Kriya. Kirtan Kriya can break any habits, complete any unfinished cycles and assist in moving through any transition or change and its accompanying emotional turmoil. Normally, Kirtan Kriya is practiced sitting in Easy or Lotus Pose. However, this version of chanting Kirtan Kriya is done lying on the stomach with the chin on the floor to balance the 11 Moon Centers. How to practice: Lie on your stomach. Place your chin on the floor. Keep your head straight without looking left or right. Place your arms alongside your body, the palms of the hands facing upward. The eyelids are closed. Focus at the mid-point between the brows. Silently chant the mantra, Saa Taa Naa Maa. You are chanting the cycle of creation. From the infinite, Saa, comes life and individual existence, Taa. From life comes death or change, Naa. From death comes the rebirth of consciousness to the joy of the infinite through which compassion leads back to life, Maa.

eliminating both the physical and mental associations with these partners. Kirtan Kriya gives the Divine Feminine a brilliant internal radiance that illuminates both her presence and her aura.

SIXTEEN TIMES Every human being has an aura surrounding and interpenetrating the physical body. What most people don’t know is that a woman’s aura is much thicker than that of a man. That’s because a woman’s aura has more antennae than a man’s aura. A woman’s aura has 16 times more antennae per square millimeter than a man’s aura. That’s why a woman is 16 times more intellectual, more patient and more compassionate than a man! It is all by divine construction! However, this ‘16 times’ business is a double-edged sword—as the plus, so the minus. Yes, she is 16 times stronger and more powerful than a man. However, when she is feeling depressed or insecure she is 16 times more depressed and more insecure than any male. The female is, quite simply, 16 times harder on herself!

THE SOUL IS WITHOUT GENDER We incarnate between Earth and the ethers for particular experiences. Sometimes we incarnate as a female and sometimes as a male. Each incarnation is designed for us to learn specific lessons. However, the soul itself is without gender. Each incarnation is comprised of different experiences that allow us to make decisions to ultimately fulfill our destiny. It is said that the human incarnation is envied even by the angels, because of the unique opportunity humans have to make a conscious choice to be free from the cycle of birth and death. Whether embodied as the Divine Feminine or the Divine Masculine, let’s use this incarnation to utilize the Lunar nature of the female to better understand one another. MOTHERHOOD DURING CRISIS by Tiffany Hinton

As our community struggles with the COVID-19 crisis, mothers are experiencing great changes as they try to find the “new normal.” This is especially true of working mothers, both those who worked outside the home and “momeprenuers” who own businesses and work from a home office. The current crisis has turned their lives upside down. They are now being asked to become an octopus, working eight fulltime jobs all at the same time. Mothers are still responsible for being a mom each day, working their full-time job, and now, they are also responsible for being a homeschool teacher or teaching assistant with kids on distance learning programs. Many are now the full-time cook, needing 16

| CONSCIOUS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE MAY 2020

to prepare meals three times per day— especially if the family has food allergies or special needs. If they were not before, they are the cleaning lady, and if they are a single parent, they also take on the role of Dad. This is too much, with the expectations of what normal looked like just five weeks ago. Mothers are putting extra stress on themselves trying to ensure it is all perfect and happening like everything is still normal. The world is not normal now. We do not leave our homes. We do not have other mom friends to talk to at work or the park. We have lost our nannies and cleaning ladies. Moms cannot expect to be 100% perfect in all of these jobs. The

moms are breaking. We are breaking and when we break, what will our families do? As women, we are strong and take on everything thrown at us with smiles on our faces. I keep telling myself, “If Eleanor Roosevelt could raise five kids while running the White House, then I got this.” The truth is I do not have this. I broke. I cried, my energy cup drained, and then I asked for help. I am grateful for my husband who realized and cared to listen. And, I am thankful for my girls who realize that I am not an octopus. I can only do one thing at a time. I am also working with my personal coach to acknowledge it cannot all be done; I need to choose what I can control and

let the rest go. If the girls do not attend school, I have decided it is their choice. And, if I wear my sweaty workout clothes all day that is ok, right? As a mom, sometimes you need to take up a journal and write—or rant—how you are feeling each day, then get a clean sheet of paper and make a list of three things to complete today. It’s important to acknowledge that we cannot do the old normal anymore. Acknowledgment of where we are emotionally and spiritually is key during this crisis. Moms need to acknowledge themselves and what they are being asked to do. Family members need to acknowledge mom for what she is doing to support the family and home. Conscious parenting is the second key during this crisis. Mothers can help their children by giving them the independence to try and do things on their own. The Montessori model is a great place to look for examples. Allow the children to pick out their own clothes and get ready in the morning. Release the idea the child’s hair or outfit needs to be perfect or match. Allow the child to make their own snack or make their own breakfast, as well as other things they know how to do, like help clean their room or the house with you and your spouse. As a mother, be mindful of the words used with the children right now, as they are also experiencing separation and anxiety from “normal” life. The child’s world is not normal either. They are unable to go play with neighbors and friends. They are not on summer break and know they still have school but without the needed structure. Allow the child to communicate with their teacher and help only if you are actually needed. Many elementary students already know how to send emails. If the child decides today is not a good day for school or they want to sleep in the middle of the day, let them. Have a mindful conversation around what they are feeling and acknowledge them for their strength and smiles they bring the family. This time will change them, similar to children who lived during the Great

Depression. The COVID-19 crisis will give our children a sense of independence and strength if we allow it. They can come out of this more resilient, having learned the valuable life lesson of how to operate under stress. Open communication and conversations will give the adults of tomorrow more strength. Healthful, conscious food choices are another important key during this crisis. As many moms are now faced with cooking three meals per day, we have the ability to choose what the family is consuming. We have an opportunity to choose health for them through food. Our families need to be eating more living foods to have the energy to thrive during this crisis. Mothers can do this by keeping fresh fruit and veggies readily available for snacks, offering a fruit smoothie for breakfast (perhaps your child can make their own smoothie and be creative), and limiting the amount of processed and package food available in the house. The new food pyramid suggests we consume 50% veggies and 25% fruit. This means mothers need about six cups of veggies and four cups of fruit each day. By choosing veggies and fruit first our bodies will have increased energy and our immune system will grow stronger. Raw and living foods have the vital nutrients cells need to be healthy, aid in digestion and produce radiant skin. Children need at least four cups a day of fruit and veggies.

Leverage the current over-abundance of produce at the store or through a delivery service. If you are afraid to stock up due to produce going bad, try cutting and freezing your favorites for later use. To save time in the kitchen each day, utilize meal prepping techniques or try using time-saving tools like a crock-pot for evening meals or morning oatmeal. Mothers, we have to change. We have to choose peace during this time and break the old normal, to become stronger and create the new world our families need. This experience of being a mother living in a crisis is not unique. Women have done this for thousands of years. Open your heart and ask for guidance. We are all in this together. IMMUNE-BOOSTING FOODS by Betsy Bruns

At the writing of this article, more than 277,000 cases of COVID-19 have been reported here in the United States and the number is rising each day. Most of us are staying home to save lives and to flatten the curve. At this time, many in the collective are feeling the effects, feeling the fear, feeling disempowered— even powerless. We are looking to the government, the news stations, social media and supplements, but how many of us are looking at our plate? I have been hearing stories of younger populations with no known underlying health conditions contracting the more severe form of the virus requiring hospitalization, even depending on 18

| CONSCIOUS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE MAY 2020

respirators to breathe. What if we are overlooking something that is right under our nose? Is it possible that the standard American diet may be creating an underlying health condition that is leaving millions at higher risk? Only 11% of Americans get the recommend three to five servings of fruits and vegetables daily. That means 89% or 293,000,000 Americans do not. Is it possible that produce deficiency and overconsumption of processed and animal foods is an under-considered factor in COVID-19? We’ve all heard the Hippocrates quote, “Let food be thy medicine and medicine

be thy food”. In light of the pandemic, we might want to consider what this means. Here’s how food becomes medicinal: The following information was sourced from The Physicians Committee. Vitamins, Minerals, and Antioxidants Studies have shown that fruits and vegetables provide nutrients—like betacarotene, vitamin C and vitamin E—that can boost immune function. Because many vegetables, fruits and other plantbased foods are also rich in antioxidants, they help reduce oxidative stress. Beta-Carotene: Beta-carotene is a powerful antioxidant that can reduce inflammation and boost immune function

by increasing disease-fighting cells in the body. Excellent sources include sweet potatoes, carrots and green leafy vegetables.

are rich in fiber, which helps fill you up, without adding extra calories. Fiber can also lower Body Mass Index (BMI), which is linked to improved immunity.

Vitamins C and E: Vitamins C and E are antioxidants that help to destroy free radicals and support the body’s natural immune response. Sources of vitamin C include red peppers, oranges, strawberries, broccoli, mangoes, lemons, as well as other fruits and vegetables. Vitamin E sources include nuts, seeds, spinach and broccoli.

While there is no guarantee that a whole food plant-based diet will protect you from contracting COVID-19, eating a variety of immune-boosting foods daily, while minimizing or avoiding animal foods and processed foods will arm your defenses.

Vitamin D: Research shows vitamin D supplementation may reduce the risk for viral infections, including respiratory tract infections, by reducing the production of pro-inflammatory compounds in the body. Increased vitamin D in the blood has been linked to the prevention of other chronic diseases, including tuberculosis, hepatitis and cardiovascular disease. Food sources of vitamin D include fortified cereals and plant-based milk substitutes and supplements. Zinc: Zinc is a mineral that can help boost white blood cells, which defend against invaders. Sources include nuts, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, beans and lentils. According to the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), the immune system is dependent on white blood cells to produce antibodies that combat bacteria, viruses and other invaders. Those eating a predominantly plant-based diet rich in fruits and vegetables have been shown to have more potent white blood cells due to a high intake of vitamins, phytonutrients and antioxidants. Eating a low-fat diet may also be protective. Studies have shown that limiting dietary fat helps to strengthen immune defenses. Research also shows that oils may impair white blood cell function and that high-fat diets may alter the gut microbiota that aid in immunity. Obesity is another factor linked to increased risk for influenza and other infections. Plant-based diets help maintain a healthy weight because they

syrup or agave nectar, garlic, ginger and sesame seeds to make the dressing. Pour the dressing into the larger bowl and toss all of the salad ingredients together.

CHICKPEA SALAD WITH ORANGE MISO DRESSING* Makes 2 Servings This dish is usually one of the most popular recipes in the Food For Life Kickstart series. People love the refreshing flavors and how good it makes them feel. Plus, it’s beautiful in presentation and looks great on a buffet table. 12 cherry tomatoes, halved 4 green onions, sliced ½ cup dry quinoa 1½ cups cooked garbanzo beans (chickpeas), or 1 can low-sodium garbanzo beans, rinsed 3 tablespoons fresh cilantro Juice of 2 fresh oranges or a 1/4 cup ¼ cup seasoned rice vinegar 2 teaspoons white or yellow miso 1 tablespoon maple syrup or agave nectar 1 clove garlic, grated or minced 1 teaspoon ginger, grated or minced 2 teaspoons black sesame seeds To make quinoa, place half cup dry quinoa in one cup water in a one-anda-half-quart saucepan and bring it to a boil. Reduce to a simmer, cover and cook until all the water is absorbed (about 15 minutes). You will know that the quinoa is done when all the grains have turned from white to transparent, and the spirallike germ has separated. Wait for it to cool to add to the recipe. You could also substitute one cup of frozen, thawed quinoa for a pre-cooked option. Combine the tomatoes, onions, cooked quinoa, garbanzo beans and fresh cilantro in a large bowl. In a small bowl, thoroughly whisk the orange juice, rice vinegar, miso, maple

PLANT-POWERED PIZZA** Plant-based eating has entered the mainstream and restaurants have taken notice. Dishes that we traditionally view as indulgences can be made to deliver on nutrition. Take pizza for example. It’s one of my favorite treats when ordering out. I find most pizza places can make a plantpowered pie. If possible, opt for a gut-friendly whole wheat or sourdough crust. Make sure there is no hidden dairy. You might request extra sauce and a variety of veggies such as mushrooms, onion, garlic, zucchini, peppers, tomatoes, spinach and broccoli. Skip the cheese and meat, of course. Your pizza will not only taste delicious and fresh, but you won’t feel weighed down and your immune system will be energized. * Recipe and photo credit: Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) **Photo credit: Betsy Bruns Betsy Bruns is a plant-based health coach, “Food for Life” instructor with the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM.org) as well as an Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) practitioner and a board member of the Plant-Based Nutrition Movement (PBNM.org). COSMIC DAILY WEATHER May 2020 by Bernadette Evans

Overview As of this writing, the world has been going through a massive shift. People have been selfisolating for weeks or months. It’s been difficult not seeing the people we love, connecting and hugging. Many people are becoming more creative in how they communicate and do business, but many others are scared and not sure what to expect. Saturn begins its retrograde on May 10, followed by Venus going retrograde on May 13, and then Jupiter on May 14. Don’t panic, the sky isn’t falling. The outer planets, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto all retrograde every year for approximately six months. Mercury retrogrades about every three months, Venus every 18 months and Mars every 24 months. I didn’t mean to give you an astrology lesson, but there you have it. With three planets retrograding this month you can expect things to still be moving at a snail’s pace. If the quarantines are still in effect at the publishing of this article, I would say you can expect that people are examining their lives, making the best of the situation and trying to figure out how to build something new that will support themselves while potentially being beneficial for the collective. Please reach out to your friends and family or the crisis line. This is a whole new world my friends and all I can say is We Will All Get Through This Together. The Moon takes about 28 days to complete its orbit through the 12 signs, staying approximately two and a half days in each sign. When we say the Moon is Void of Course or VoC, it means the Moon makes no more major aspects to other planets before it leaves the sign it is in. At these times, it can be difficult to get focused and accomplish a task. You may want to relax, meditate or do something where your focus is turned inward. Don’t try and get a new project off the ground when the Moon is Void. If you want to find out more about the Void of Course Moon, check out moontracks.com. The times below are listed in Central Daylight Time.

Friday, May 1 When the Moon opposes Mars, there’s the potential to become irritated by those around you and embroiled in a disagreement. Instead of stubbornly holding on to your opinion and lashing out, you could channel this energy into a physical activity that would let off steam. You could try working together instead of arguing and come up with solutions that benefit everyone, rather than focusing on what works just for you. Moon in Leo and VoC at 11:04 a.m.

Saturday, May 2 There’s a lot of energy in Earth signs today. You could pursue something that has practical applications. The Moon trines Uranus and Mercury as well as the Sun, which could put the focus on an unusual encounter, a surprise or tapping into your intuitive side by doing what you love. Taking a steady approach to your work will lead to growth. Moon enters the sign of Virgo at 12:35 a.m.

Sunday, May 3 The Venus-Neptune square puts the spotlight on romance, candlelight and daydreaming. You want all the bells and whistles that make your heart sing. You’re generous and want to bestow grand gestures on those you love. Be cautious starting a new romance right now, as the stars in your eyes could be clouding your vision. There’s a possibility of a relationship dissolving, and if that’s the case, it’s best to let it go. Venus and Neptune together

could help you create some beautiful magic in the art studio. Moon VoC at 9:25 p.m.

Monday, May 4 When the Sun conjuncts Mercury, you could be more talkative than usual, steering the conversation in a certain direction. With a little patience and planning, you could create something that brings in money; I know you’re eager to get going. Speaking of going…get outside and go for a walk around the neighborhood. Moon enters the sign of Libra at 2:09 a.m.

Tuesday, May 5 When the Moon trines Venus, there’s a desire to connect with others, whether it’s in person, by phone or through live video chat. Interacting with others and sharing ideas and feelings are what keeps us going day to day. You may feel like indulging and having the extra piece of cake or the whole bowl of popcorn. Go ahead! You can get back on track tomorrow. Moon VoC at 9:31 p.m.

Wednesday, May 6 You could be looking for an escape-hatch as feelings of restlessness and wanting more freedom come to the surface during the MoonUranus opposition. Maybe you just need a little more space. Don’t do anything hasty that you’ll regret later. Explore healthy ways to deal with your restlessness and the need for something new and exciting. Moon enters the sign of Scorpio at 2:05 a.m.

Thursday, May 7 It may feel like the future is fraught with uncertainty. You could be mourning a loss and not sure how you’ll ever get over it. It’s okay to cry and grieve; there have been a lot of losses lately. This is a great time to examine your feelings about what’s happened. Confront your fears, your demons and know that there may be treasures in the darkness. Once you’ve had a good cry, screamed and railed against the Universe—or whatever it is you need to do—move forward. This too will pass. There is light at the end of the tunnel. Full Moon in Scorpio at 5:45 a.m. Moon VoC at 9:39 p.m.

Friday, May 8 There’s a seriousness to the day when the Moon sextiles Saturn. You may want to go off and have some time to yourself to think about life and your responsibilities. Your calm presence can help those around you breathe easier. Moon enters the sign of Sagittarius at 2:15 a.m.

Saturday, May 9 When Mercury trines Pluto and Jupiter, you have the opportunity to dig deep and explore some issues if you want. Is there someone or something from your past that’s holding you back?

Conversations with others could be more complex; your thinking influences those around you, just as theirs has an impact on you. FYI…this is a great time to study something that’s always captured your interest.

Sunday, May 10 Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers out there and to all who nurture us in their own way! The Sun-Neptune sextile heightens your intuition by allowing you to feel more empathy towards others and emphasizing your caring nature. Tap into your connection with the Universe, find your inner strength through compassion towards others and yourself. Your focus on others will bring you joy. Saturn begins its retrograde at 11:09 p.m. Moon VoC at 1:11 a.m. until 4:39 a.m. when it enters the sign of Capricorn.

Monday, May 11 Mercury is comfortable entering its sign of Gemini at 4:58 p.m. When Mercury’s in Gemini, you may be able to think on your feet and be ready to spar at a moment’s notice. Whoever said, “Variety is the spice of life” must have been talking about a Gemini or Mercury in Gemini. Your interests may be varied. Go with it! Have fun! Taste a little bit of everything!

Tuesday, May 12 You may be focused on business or practical matters when Saturn trines Mercury. Your mind is sharp and you’re trying to think of innovative and practical ways to earn money as well as save for a rainy day. Get an opinion from someone you trust if you feel it’s too much to figure out on your own. Mars enters the sign of Pisces at 11:17 p.m. When the planet of action is in watery Pisces, you could find that your actions are motivated by your intuition. There’s the possibility that you have a harder time asserting yourself; your energy is affected by your moods. Moon VoC at 5:30 a.m. until 10:39 a.m. when it enters the sign of Aquarius.

Wednesday, May 13 Venus begins its retrograde at 1:45 a.m. Venus will be retrograde until June 25, approximately six weeks. When the planet of love, relationships and money goes retrograde, you may want to spend some time reflecting on your relationships and how they’re going. You could feel conflicted and not sure in which direction to go. Take some time to go inward and discover what it is you want and need from your partnerships. What part do you play in all of this? You may be eager to move forward, but some soul searching and honest conversations with yourself and others could set you up for success down the road. Remember to also take a hard look at your finances and what you need to do moving forward.

Thursday, May 14 Jupiter goes retrograde at 9:32 a.m. Jupiter will Station Direct on Sept. 12. The Moon is Void in Aquarius for most of the day. A part of you may be wanting to get together with friends or even meet some new people. The other part of you may be needing some time away from everyone.
