oven Image, leaders in design-led sustainable acoustic finishes for the built environment, has had its pioneering acoustic surface EchoPanel independently certified Carbon Neutral by Climate Active. Climate Active certification is one of the most rigorous in the world. This highly credible Australian governmentbacked carbon neutral certification for businesses allows specifiers to confidently choose products that are stringently tested and third party verified for their environmental impact. This certification covers all 7mm, 12mm, and 24mm EchoPanel acoustic panels and includes the precision cut designs Longitude, Latitude, Meridian, Empire, Palace, Ohm and Align. EchoPanel is the original PET acoustic solution suitable for a range of commercial interior applications where both good design and acoustic performance are required. EchoPanel® is made from 100% PET, a minimum of which is 60% post-consumer plastics, recycled to create beautiful and functional designled sustainable acoustic solutions for architects, interior designers and end-users. Launched back in 2004 as part of Woven Images commitment to product stewardship; EchoPanel is a responsible material design solution for waste minimisation and dematerialisation in commercial interior design. EchoPanel achieves Global Green Tag (GreenRate level A), with the maximum Product Health Declaration Platinum Health Rate. EchoPanel is also Red List Free, meaning it

doesn’t contain the materials and chemicals known to pose serious harm to human and environmental health. It has published ingredient transparency with Declare and low VOC emissions. Woven Image’s commitment to transparency is demonstrated by the publication of a robust Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) with information on the material flows and environmental impacts during the lifecycle of EchoPanel®. The EchoPanel® EPD is recognised by international green building rating tools including BREEAM, WELL, LEED and GreenStar, helping specifiers to source stringently tested sustainable products with confidence. By October 2023, a recorded total of 6586 tonnes of PET plastic had been recycled to create Woven Image’s range of acoustic products. This is the equivalent of 329 million 600ml plastic drinking bottles have been

diverted from waterways and landfill. This also equates to 7771 tonnes of carbon dioxide; to put that into perspective, that is 155 million balloons’ worth of carbon that has been prevented from entering the atmosphere. Woven Image’s research and manufacturing facility also utilises solar energy, tripling its solar capacity in June 2023, drastically reducing its dependence on fossilfuel derived grid energy. It now has the capacity to produce an average 360MWh of solar energy every year. However, every product produces an impact, so those activities which cannot be eliminated are offset by carbon credit procurement, supporting projects that aim to reduce and remove emissions, to balance EchoPanel’s carbon emission status. Many of these projects provide a wider environmental and social impact beyond reducing carbon.

Commenting on the showroom’s launch, Gio Bressana said: “I am excited to be opening our first showroom outside of Italy in Dubai, a growing international hub for the arts. In ‘The Hidden Garden,’ I see the environments of our homes through a lens, capturing the colours, shapes, and deep connection I feel with nature. It’s all about harmonizing materials with the concept of sustainability to create spaces that nurture both physical and mental wellbeing. This is my vision for a truly perfect design.” “I wanted to create a three-dimensional space where people can be truly immersed and feel the emotion of the room and the artist. cclaimed Italian artist Gio Bressana debuts his first Middle East showroom in the UAE’s creative hub, Dubai Design District (d3). The fully immersive space seamlessly melds the artist’s mastery of frescoes and furniture design into a holistic environment that redefines the boundaries of artistic expression. A pioneering master in the fusion of historical art styles including Baroque, Gothic, Neoclassical, Impressionism, Liberty, and Modernism, the showroom presents Bressana’s first art and design interiors concept, ‘The Hidden Garden’. Featuring a fresco mural that captures the artist’s creative flair, the wall showcases an ethereal garden reminiscent of 19th-century Oriental botanical rice paper paintings. A curated blend of beauty and functionality, the studio’s capsule of 10 unique furniture pieces was designed by Bressana and his creative design partner Simonne Chevalier and handcrafted by Italian artisans. The capsule includes a lamp meticulously made from burned stones to resemble a flowering Magnolia tree and two coffee tables made from rock crystal and semi-precious stones. An ethereal sofa evokes the timeless elegance of Coromandel lacquer screens reminiscent of Coco Chanel’s iconic designs. Complementing these remarkable pieces are two sculptures of a bear and a bag, as well as an elegant table made of white onyx with legs hand-painted by Gio himself. Personalization is at the core of Bressana’s artistic philosophy. Every environment is meticulously created as a non-repeatable masterpiece and exclusively tailored to the client’s desires. L

ighting and acoustics specialists Acoulite have partnered with Moodsonic to bring the scientificallydesigned sounds of nature into their Dubai workplace in a new showcase open to industry professionals.

design-middleeast.com

Noise is the most common complaint in most shared spaces, including businesses and healthcare facilities. Some areas are too noisy, while others are very quiet. Whatever the issue, the sound in most buildings is neither healthy nor productive. Soundscaping is the act of bringing designed sound into buildings for purposes of improving people’s health and supporting different activities.

Research shows that the sounds of nature, which people are often deprived of in urban environments, can benefit wellbeing and improve people’s focus, problem-solving, collaboration and restoration. Moodsonic’s technology enables these natural sounds to be brought indoors zonally to create different sensory experiences. It uses generative technology to ensure the sounds don’t repeat, with sensors that allow the audio to adapt automatically to changing environments. “With Moodsonic’s technology we can create interiors where sight and sound are aligned. In the Dubai showcase, for instance, we pair circadian soundscapes with circadian lighting to optimize the wellbeing benefits,” said Ben Spargo, Acoustics Director at Acoulite. “Soundscapes help make buildings more comfortable and inviting, and from an experiential-perspective really take interiors to the next level,” said Evan Benway, Managing Director at Moodsonic. “This new showcase gives practitioners in the UAE the opportunity to experience that firsthand.” Visitors to the showcase, located in Dubai’s Business Bay, can learn about the science of sound, tour the workplace and hear live demonstrations of the technology.

APPROACH TO SOLAR INTEGRATION IN HOME RENOVATIONS.

S

olar-powered homes have an influence that reaches beyond finances. The significant environmental benefits help to reduce carbon footprints and promote sustainable living. As the founder of Wonderwall, I am at the forefront of luxury home renovations, advocating for the seamless integration of solar energy into residential projects. In this edition, I will share my expert thoughts, investigating the potential and solutions for solar-powered homes in smaller projects, particularly within the vibrant communities of the UAE. Maximising electric loads for modern living and economic feasibility The UAE is experiencing an increase in power demand both indoors and outdoors. We are seeing a big movement towards solar solutions, with residential homes increasingly aiming to generate up to 100% of their electricity from solar power. There is a growing trend

design-middleeast.com

towards sustainable practices and a desire to lessen environmental effect. While an initial investment ranges from AED50,000 to AED250,000 for individual homes, the long-term returns are substantial, especially for those with plans rooted in the region for the next 5 to 10 years. People are seeing ROI as early as six years, making it essential for future builds for many. Electric and water government authorities, local developers, and landlords rally behind this initiative, recognising the economic and environmental benefits of integrating solar power into homes. An important consideration is whether the property is an existing home or a fresh land to work off. The underground piping requires an entire change, and the costs increase significantly in those cases. Existing households, on the other hand, can investigate solar panel-powered solutions for specific uses, thereby increasing energy efficiency in a realistic and cost-effective manner. You may use solar energy to power outdoor lighting.

Harnessing solar power can greatly improve operational efficiency in homes with extensive pool machinery, providing an environmentally benign alternative to traditional energy sources. Finally, and most effectively, solar panels can power up to 6-8 bathroom water heaters, reducing reliance on traditional energy sources while also minimising environmental impact. By strategically selecting key areas for solar integration, homeowners can make tangible strides towards a more sustainable and energy-conscious living environment. Aesthetic considerations If you have the opportunity to design and build a solar-powered home from the ground up, the aesthetic challenge can be daunting. Solar panels can improve aesthetics (in an ideal world) by being used as architectural features like skylights or pergolas, resulting in a harmonious balance of sustainability and design. Interestingly, the aesthetic appeal of solar panels is gaining traction; just as airports globally have incorporated them as centrepieces,

residential projects can leverage solar technology as a design element The earlier you have these conversations, the more likely you are to create a truly connected design in every detail. In fact, due to space constraints or a lack of early engagement, solar panels can become an afterthought. Solar panels allow you to push your creative design problem-solving abilities, including ideas for how to conceal them elegantly. This conversation brings me to the most critical foundation you will need for any solar panel project. Collaborating and working seamlessly with architects, interior designers, and solar experts is crucial for a cohesive design. Early involvement in the planning stages ensure seamless integration of solar solutions into the overall design vision. For example, I learned about daylight optimisation from my solar experts. It takes advantage of the natural light generated by solar panels to enhance daylight within the home by using design methods that maximise the benefits of natural light, decreasing the demand for artificial lighting throughout the

day and creating a bright, inviting ambience. Knowing this from the start can make a huge difference in the strategic design process. Working collaboratively also allows for future updates and advancements in solar technology. Create places that can readily incorporate new solar panels or improved energy storage systems as technology advances. These insights illuminate the path towards a more sustainable and energy-efficient future, not only meeting the current needs of communities in the UAE but also laying the groundwork for a paradigm shift in residential living. As the boundaries of innovation continue to expand, considering solar solutions is not just an option but an imperative for the homes of tomorrow.

Could you please explain your role at Hansgrohe and how your professional experience has added value to the brand? I've been with the company for 22 years, firstly working in the European market. I've been the managing director of France for eight years, which is one of the world's largest markets, and I've also supported a number of markets throughout Europe. Since 2018, I've been the vice president for, an expansive region, which includes the Middle East, Africa, Central Asia, and Latin America. We have local companies in some countries, and local partners in others, but we sell our goods all over the world.

As a global leader in shower and faucets we have an important role in supporting our hospitality partners with the best sustainable solutions for their facilities. We recognize that if customers can experience the shower experience, the buying decision will be facilitated. We have built a testing center in Germany where our customers can go (it feels like a luxury spa) and try our different products for the 60 minutes required to make a decision. Our main priority is explaining the value, because we are a premium brand selling a durable product. Our objective is always to provide the best value for money. We convey to a consumer that if they buy a product from Hansgrohe, it will last 15 years, and that the experience they will have in the shower will be superlative and that the water usage will be significantly lower.

FEB RUA RY 2024

We are developing and manufacturing premium sanitary fittings and showers. Our task is to bring the best possible solutions at every price point for interior designers, architects, and end consumers. With our 5,500 colleagues we work hard to set the trends in design, function sustainability and user experience in the bathroom. For instance, we started the special finishes journey more than 10 years ago and today we are seeing a lot of matte black merchandise for which we started building factories five years ago; it doesn't happen overnight. This is the result of the appropriate planning and execution. It takes three years to develop a new collection. As a result, we are currently working on the collections for 2026-27. And we already have a product pipeline in place to meet the market's future demands based on various technologies, sustainability, and water-saving approaches.

Hotel bathroom renovations are on the upswing in the region. How challenging are these tasks, and what renovation projects are you working on?

|

With the changing times in sanitary and other bathroom accessories, how can you prepare yourself to evolve with the needs of guests and how to best offer them?

We talk constantly about trends and materials, and how, in the coming years, we will most likely need to recycle more than we do now. And because this is the road we are taking as a manufacturer we will most likely have alternative materials in the future.

BOTTOM SPHERE – SPACE FOR MENTAL HYGIENE The conceptual SPHERE, part of Green Vision concept study is the area for mental retreat. An armchair with a flexible dome invites you to relax. Through the interplay of light, sounds and warm water vapor infused with essential oils, the dome enables a multi-sensory experience – with minimal consumption of water and energy and thus less CO2e emissions. Opening or closing the dome creates different states that influence the intensity of the experience. This creates a relaxation effect like in a bathtub, but without wasting water and energy

How important is it to educate customers about new technology and innovations, and what are you doing about it? Most end-consumers replace their bathrooms every 16 years. So, when the time comes to buy, we need to make sure that our target audience have access to the right information in order to make the right decision. We have showrooms all across the world where customers can come, try things out, and touch and feel the products. We devote a significant amount of time to training salespeople so they can explain, clarify, and address the queries of customers. We also have a lot of engagement with architects and interior designers. Bathroom products are durable products, and our customers value our sustainable approach, timeless design, quality and user experience. Ideally, these products should be purchased with the expectation of using them on a daily basis for more than ten years. >>> design-middleeast.com

Aside from showrooms, we have a website, social media channels, and we send out a lot of communication to keep the public and our partners and stakeholders well informed. We also have many connections to the plumbing community as plumbers can recommend the items as well as install them.

What are your current trends, including new colours and finishes? It’s all about individualization. People desire something unique, something that meets their needs and personality, and this is what we excel at. Most of our products can be purchased in every fin-

ish, and we can tweak some of them to make them uniquely yours. And as a company, we provide a wide assortment of products and styles, so you will always find something that fits your needs.

How do you describe luxury in the bathroom? Luxury is the combination of the right usage of space, perfectly crafted products and the design and finish that fits your needs and personality. Another key aspect of luxury is personalization. Somebody else’s perfect bathroom is probably not the right bathroom for you. Outstanding design and artisan excellence is also a defin-

ing aspect of luxury. With the AXOR brand we enjoy an exciting collaboration with the top world-renowned industrial designers and architects including Philippe Starck and many others, to create world-class products. With every collection our aim is to create a streamlined, simple and uncluttered look, a key example being the Philippe Starck ShowerCollection, where innovative solutions behind the wall make way to perfect designs in front of the wall. This enables really simple installation whilst giving the interior designer absolute creative freedom. Other partnerships include those with Antonio Citterio and Bar-

ber Osgerby, through which we continue to develop creative iconic collections that seamlessly harness the flow of water to deliver a pleasant bathing experience while also adding great visual appeal.

Why is sustainability such an important focus for your company? We are the company with the green logo and the green history. We continue to place sustainability at the heart of what we do, with water conservation always a key priority. water-saving technologies. By 2025, Hansgrohe Group will already have converted 75 percent of its overhead and hand-held showers to EcoSmart, technology which reduces the amount of shower water consumed on a daily basis by up to 60%. Hansgrohe’s EcoSmart overhead and hand showers consume just 8 liters of water per minute, with some managing to use as little as 6 liters. In addition, our “Green Vision” lays out a highly innovative design concept whereby bathrooms will use 90% less water, and we are working towards making that vision a reality. Products with AirPower suck in an ample amount of air. So, you can enjoy plump, soft droplets while also consuming less water.

Firstly, people must feel at ease with the product, and it must be user-friendly. We design for people of all age groups and lifestyles. It’s a fact that we are all getting older, so operating complicated buttons and levers while showering or washing is not desirable. We are very cognizant that our products must function for everyone and we strive to deliver on that. The bathroom is supposed to be your personal sanctuary, a place of relaxation and well-being, and where the bathing ritual should be straightforward, offering a pampering pleasurable experience. Some of our shower system products even combine a variety of spray modes which can be altered depending on the mood of the user – alternating between a rigorous pummel for a massaging experience or a fine powder spray for a more gentle ritual. Bathrooms can only feel good if they look good. We continuously follow the evolution of bathroom design while providing our customers with new and aesthetically outstanding products that are of the highest quality manufacture. When you combine this proposition with our keen focus on individualization, our offering is highly distinctive. It’s why our products are incorporated into the most esteemed residential and hospitality projects across the world and why we are so proud of our heritage and vision.

Every project has its unique set of challenges; in this case, the difficulty was preserving the original wooden ceiling while introducing new aesthetic elements in the form of LED-illuminated wallpaper squares. The addition of a captivating bead curtain gave the room more depth and personality. The ceiling features intriguing wallpaper cladding, giving the space a contemporary and creative feel. The black marble mosaic floor adds timeless beauty to the dark colour scheme while maintaining a sense of grandeur. The beautiful bead curtain hanging from the ceiling is Agora's most prominent feature. The precisely organised and suspended beads provide a dynamic visual centrepiece that adds intrigue and movement to the room, inviting clients to interact with the design on a sensory level.

Every design element tells a story, be it the colour palette which is carefully chosen to create a luxurious and timeless atmosphere. The design features forest green fabrics for mystery and richness, copper accents for warmth and elegance, and Indian green marble tabletops for eternal grandeur. The Agora features bespoke pendant lights that create a welcoming atmosphere for relaxing and socialising. The space is defined by its exceptional use of custommade furniture, including cylindrical chairs and elegant bar chairs. J A D A B O U J A O U D E / Salmon Guru Dubai provides a unique experience that's both relaxed and exceptional, making it a go-to spot. The venue's inviting ambience sets the stage for a memorable time. What makes the experience even more enjoyable is the friendly bar team that adds a welcoming touch to your visit. Poliform, OBEGI Home's mono-brand, is making its debut in the UAE. What segment are you targeting, and what are your expectations? GAIA SPINELLI: The market in the UAE and in particular Dubai is extremely fervent and highly potential. The city is a crucial and strategic hub for both the Middle and far East, and a strong presence of the brand here is beneficial for all the region. GAIA SPINELLI: In the Middle Eastern countries, we observe a growing interest in modern, contemporary design styles as opposed to the more traditional tastes of the previous decade, resulting in increased attention and admiration for our brand and style. For these reasons, the Middle Eastern countries provide a potentially large and rapidly rising market for Poliform. Could you talk about some of the trends from the Salone del Mobile in 2024 and how you intend to implement them across all regions? MARCO SPINELLI: Salone del Mobile represents for the design industry the most important moment to showcase not only new products and collections but to set the latest inspiring trends. Being a lifestyle company, our greatest challenge is to replicate these trends and lifestyle concept in the market through the Mono brand store distribution channel. This is what we have been able to create here in Poliform Dubai, a destination for the final as well as the professional customers that is perfectly coherent with our brand image and makes them fully experience the brand. ,>>>

able to provide an exclusive service, as well as technical and unique design solution is the most difficult thing in running a furniture business nowadays.

Talk about your latest collection and how sustainable is. MARCO SPINELLI: Sustainability for Poliform has always been a priority and a fundamental value. All our products are designed, studied, and manufactured respecting the strictest European regulations in terms of environmental respect, formaldehyde emissions, and attention to the recycling process. Moreover, the quality of our products makes their life circle extremely long-lasting and this durability of the product we believe embodies the value of sustainability itself. What do you find most difficult in this region, and how are you dealing with it? GAIA SPINELLI: What is more difficult in our industry in general but especially in this region to successfully run the business is to find and build a solid and professional platform of experienced local partners that can count on valuable and acknowledged staff. In particular for a company like ours it requires

many different skills to design sell, and install our products; finding a reliable, experienced, and trustable partner like OBEGI Home is fundamental. Do innovation and sustainability go hand in hand for the brand? MARCO SPINELLI: Absolutely, especially in the historical moment we are living, where the attention to the environment and sustainability is not only a market requirement but a value and a moral obligation. R&D departments must take as a key priority the sustainability of products looking forward to always implementing the latest innovations in terms of materials as well as production technologies and processes. With the rise of e-commerce, how have you modified your marketing efforts to entice customers to visit your current brick-and-mortar locations? GAIA SPINELLI: For a brand

like this, whose core business is a lifestyle interior design concept we can’t think about e-commerce as a sales channel by itself. We do believe in an omnichannel strategy based of course on strong visibility through the digital channels but at the same time a unique experience in-store. Therefore, all our marketing efforts are focused on both sides: the brand digital presence as well as on developing and strengthening our physical presence worldwide through a wide network of mono-brand stores highly connected with the mother company. What do you think the biggest challenge is for luxury retail in the next five years? GAIA SPINELLI: The biggest challenge for designing luxury retail not only for the next five years but in general, is again people. Recruit, train, and retain professional, acknowledged staff that is

As you think about the future, where do you see yourself and the brand, especially in terms of the design and your contribution? MARCO SPINELLI: Poliform works everyday and tirelessly for continuous improvement; we are never content with the results; we always want to do better, enhance product quality, increase brand visibility and awareness, and locate the greatest partners and locations for our brand. We wish to grow and expand the community of people who approach and love the brand, both as sales partners and eventual customers. We have the obligation to always surprise, inspire, let them fall in love, and never letting them down.

"Sustainability for Poliform has always been a priority and a fundamental value. All our products are designed, studied, and manufactured respecting the strictest European regulations in terms of environmental respect, formaldehyde emissions, and attention to the recycling process." - MARCO SPINELLI

bespoke design with the brand's creative ethos. Broadway Interiors recently completed the design and refurbishment of Make Up For Ever's headquarters in d3, resulting in a 420sqm workspace that reflects the brand's attitude of beauty and innovation. Havelock One's fast-track project converted Make Up For Ever's workspace into a modern and beautiful office interior, as well as a dynamic atmosphere designed to stimulate innovation. The remodelled office space for the French cosmetics firm, created by make-up artist Dany Sanz in 1984, is designed to meet the different demands of the staff. From an open-plan workstation area, to acoustic meeting booths offering privacy for concentrated work, the space is strategically laid out to support different modes of work, while enhancing productivity. "Dubai Design District is an ideal backdrop for the Make Up For Ever office, reflecting the brand's commitment to creativity and innovation," says Dawn Pabiona, senior interior designer at Broadway Interiors. "Our design approach melds functional elegance with the aesthetic elements iconic to Make Up For Ever, creating a workspace that is not only efficient, but also a true embodiment of the brand's ethos." The office is well-lit and open-plan, with ergonomic black office chairs and white desks at each workstation. The warm wood laminate flooring complements the clean lines of the furniture and reflects natural light. This complements the white and red colour scheme. According to Pabiona, the client brief was to incorporate key signature elements from their make-up stores into the new office design. The main focus is a vibrant red mesh ceiling feature that swoops down in curved accents, adding a dynamic and fluid element to the space. This feature not only injects the brand's signature colour into the office, but also adds a creative and energetic atmosphere. Strategically placed throughout the office are green planters, which add a touch of nature. The walls are mostly white, with sections of glass partitions for smaller meeting rooms, creating an open yet divided workspace. The glass partitions help maintain an open feel while also providing separation for different work areas. The refurbishment introduces a dedicated make-up training centre, underscoring the brand's commitment to education in the beauty industry. The room is designed with a modern and professional aesthetic, featuring a long, sleek counter that serves as a workstation for makeup training. Above the counter, a row of large, circular mirrors with built-in ring lights provides ample illumination, essential for detailed makeup application and instruction. Each makeup station is equipped with a comfortable, fabric-upholstered chair in a dark grey tone, complementing the >>>

renowned for their visionary designs and forward-thinking approach. Together, they embarked on a mission to create a headquarters that not only encapsulates the essence of the flydubai brand but also cultivates an environment that is conducive to increasing employee productivity. This architectural monument was created with a single goal in mind: to seamlessly incorporate flydubai's operational efficiency, agility, and dependability concepts into the very fabric of the workplace. Strategically located on Emirates Road, flydubai's headquarters is equidistant to both major airports: Dubai International (DXB) and Dubai World Central (DWC). ENGINEERING CONCEPTS The architectural design showcases the latest technological advancements, exuding an energetic and vibrant ambience. Cutting-edge features serve as a testament to the airline's innovative spirit, fostering a modern, fresh, healthy and friendly work environment. The design embraces the 'Golden Ratio' concept, with proportions adhering to this mathematical principle, reinforcing the building's harmony and visual appeal. Simple geometry combines with corporate office eledesign-middleeast.com

ments in a single-block structure accommodating various functions, from offices and training facilities to recreation areas and employee service centers. Sustainable development adheres to the Dubai Green Building Code, promoting a greener future without compromising occupant health. The headquarters has also received a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification, reflecting its commitment to a sustainable working environment for its employees through energy-efficient features and green building practices.

INTERIOR DESIGN The interior design tackled the challenge of inter-departmental connectivity and future expansion needs. The workspace distribution, developed after extensive stakeholder input and departmental staff interviews, creates modular nodes that form teams of various sizes with hierarchy of offices, open-plan desks, breakout areas and meeting spaces. These modular workgroups can easily double in size while maintaining communal elements. The expansive headquarters includes office space, food and beverage outlets, training facilities, a fitness gym, and a relaxation area, as well as a separate warehouse, outdoor fitness areas, and plenty of onsite parking, including multiple charging spots for electric vehicles. Flydubai's headquarters exemplify the airline's dedication to innovation, collaboration, energy efficiency, resilience, and excellence. It is a symbol of prosperity and a monument to its continuous expansion.

enice and cities in the Middle East provide valuable lessons in resilience – the most vital survival tool for the modern city. A city is a multi-layered thing. Named for gods, lovers, conquerors and new beginnings, cities across the world are imbued with the dreams of people long past, the ambitions of the present, and the hopes of generations to come. As the world faces the realities of overpopulation, global warming, climate change, energy crisis and desertification, many cities will fall under threat of becoming uninhabitable. Over the next 50 years, 1 to 3 billion people are projected to be left outside the climate conditions that have served humanity well for the past 6,000 years . As stewards of the built environment, architects must consider how liveable, people-centric spaces can be created, adapted, and made more resilient. While the continuing technological feats of the Fourth Revolution will contribute to future solutions globally, inspiration for a way forward also lies in our past. Synergies between Venice and cites across the Middle East – both home to incredible feats of innovation in the

face of extreme elements at different points in time – have a lot to teach us about resilience.

A CASE FOR SAVING CITIES. Cities are the seeds from which societies grow. Their undeniable pull saw a young Leonardo Da Vinci move to Florence from the countryside during the 1500s and is still the reason younger generations will choose to live in a small flat in a crowded city over more generous living conditions in the country. For young and old, cities are tantalizing hubs of innovation, community, and connection.

53

Based in Dubai studio, PAOLO oversees the firm’s global masterplan and Urban Design team to deliver holistic and sustainable design solutions. With more than 20 years of experience leading architecture, urban planning and environmental design projects, Paolo’s ethos is based upon a sensible business case for the proposed mix of uses and sustainable agenda.

DREAMS SET ON WATER: VENICE. The 1600-year tale of Venice is a remarkable story of innovation and imagination. An exceptional example of human ingenuity, the man-made city’s astonishing location over the very northern corner of the Adriatic Sea was honed to provide protection, tactical advantage, and the basis for a maritime golden age. But, in recent centuries, Venice’s story turns from triumphant to cautionary. The city’s tale takes a turn for the worse in two senses: physically, because of rising sea levels and the related ruin of its ancient structures, and fundamentally, because its long-held spirit of reinvention and innovative edge has waned. Tourism has been Venice’s main source of income since the end of the 18th century. The city hosts 30 million visitors a year – more than two-thirds of which only come for the day – while the number of permanent residents threatens to drop below 50 000. Facing a city that no longer feels like theirs, the remaining inhabitants of Venice’s historic centre say they fear becoming like “relics in an open museum.” Last August, UNESCO threatened to put Venice on its list of World Heritage Sites that are at risk due to "insufficient efforts" to preserve the city – speaking to the risks for cities that mistake exploitation for exploration, forgoing progress in the name of preservation.

Even in recent times, the call of the city remains clear. While the early days of the pandemic were rife with predictions of the ultimate death of cities, fears of a global urban exodus proved overstated. Big cities emerged resilient, and the people who left them returned. Almost 60 percent of the world’s population, 4.4 billion inhabitants, live in cities today – and nearly 7 out of 10 people are predicted to live in cities by 2050 .

faces an ever-growing list of challenges. But, like the Venice of old, Dubai, Qatar and Riyadh exhibit a collective determination that takes the idea of harmonising with the environment to unfathomable new heights. The exploration of emerging technologies and new urban typologies in cities across the Middle East provides ways to keep designers focused on the future – promoting unconventional ways of design thinking, solving problems, and challenging the status quo.

ow important are leadership skills in your role, and how do you motivate your employees on a regular basis?

Crucial in fact. People will have different approaches on how they deal with their teams and how they feel they are able to motivate them to give their best. I remember being an employee. I remember the managers I had that motivated me to do better, even with a simple ‘well done’. Conversely, I clearly remember the opposite. I start from a point of reminding myself of the obvious; that every single person that we have working for us plays a huge role in having a guest walk in an and out after an evening out ‘having’

to come back. Good food and great service isn’t a benchmark anymore, it’s a given. There is no wavering from this so it’s the human touches where you have a chance to set yourself apart. The training program that the team is constantly put through and the results of the internal exams we religiously run, will determine how quickly positions free up for promotions within the team we have. What was your source of inspiration for Tàn Chá?

Can you tell us what are distinct features of Tàn Chá?

We have a quite a few. Notably our wallpaper is quite distinctive as we had it designed and printed. Each room has a different design feel and for sure, unique to us. We have avoided ‘white’ as a colour throughout and have kept an elegant but colourful palette even with our plates. Our terrace boasts beautiful view of the canal and the water cascade under the flyover. Guests that book the terrace get a special surprise, but I’ll leave that as a surprise. Book yourself in and find out. Food and drink are the main highlights of any restaurant. What are some unique items to try and not to miss when one visits this venue?

It’s hard to pick just one, so best to go through at least a few of the signatures. Probably the most requested dish is the Peking

Tàn Chá was a Covid baby and was conceptualised during unprecedented times in our industry. We had time to prepare and think about the best use of space in the venue. We wanted the place to be colourful and move away from a more reserved colour palette normally used in venues like ours serving Chinese food. We took references from the urban side of downtown Hong Kong and Dubai’s opulence. There are a few meanings for Tàn Chá but the one we lean on is ‘to explore’.

Each of the areas built in the restaurant are distinctly different and guests tend to gravitate to their favourite parts depending on the occasion.

duck, served a little less traditionally but very Tàn Chá, comes in its own display with the usual cucumber, pancakes, leeks, and Duck sauce, but in addition we add a truffle foie gras and a citrus plum sauce for variety. Another firm favourite is the Song Lu Cheong Fun, a truffle and mushroom filling, wrapped in tofu skin and then coated in rice flour pastry and drizzled with superior soy, this dish is an absolute winner, every single table will see one of these.

From the drinks selection I would say the most ordered drink is called ‘Tricked by a Fox’ which is an intense sweet and sour drink. Is there a storytelling element to the design creation of this F&B venue?

Our cocktail menu follows the flight of a little crane on a journey of discovery and adventure. Each spirit selected for our cocktails is matched with a Chinese mythological creature or deity and >>> design-middleeast.com

created into a fable. Each fable and character is linked with some moral challenge that our little crane needs to learn from or overcome. Each of these interactions inspired us in the beginning and we decided to use the cranes journey as a source of inspiration for our interiors design, we subsequently added little nods to the crane throughput our venue, most notably on the chef’s table. What is the unique value proposition that you offer to your customers?

We’d like to think that we provide affordable luxury at Tàn Chá. Our tasting menus are very reasonably priced for the variety and quality we offer. Our guests do not feel intimidated to spend but if that is what they feel like doing, then we have some beautiful fine wines and signature dishes that will tick those boxes. On the flipside, our Sunday Bottomless Dim Sum offer is a limitless selection of some of our most popular Dim Sums and some unique ones only for Sunday lunch with tea for AED250 a head. We often sell out on this day, so bookings are advised. design-middleeast.com

How is technology enhancing the consumer experience?

Technology affects every part of the operation these days, but for us we have tried to keep away from too many gimmicks, but we have recently added paperless billing. Do you face any challenges in the region in the F&B segment? Are there any specific initiatives and actions do you think Dubai needs to up the level in F&B industry?

Just when you think Dubai can’t surprise anymore it always find a way to do so. So many wonderful venues and brands in the region do make it somewhat challenging for a homegrown concept like ours as it takes longer for guests to come and try you as they have so many recognisable brands from their hometowns or business trips to go to. That being said, we have felt very welcome here which shows by the various accolades that we have received since the opening and the hundreds of wonderful reviews from guests. What are your targets and expectations for 2024?

Keep pushing the boundaries with interesting dishes and services is key for us in 2024. We never relax as there is always something to improve. We will open a bar on our terrace which will round off the experience there. Expansion to other territories is starting to make sense and we are in talks already for that.
