aving played husband and wife in the first two series of The Crown, Matt Smith and Claire Foy have since starred as a married couple in the play Lungs at the Old Vic Theatre, set to transfer to New York. They have also been spending more time together, amid rumours that Matt has split from his girlfriend of five years. Body language expert Judi James tells us what’s really going on…

‘Extraordinarily cute’

In this picture, Judi says ‘Matt’s eye-attention is focused on Claire’, while Claire’s ‘extraordinarily cute expression’ is one ‘you might use to impress someone and – again – flatter them, rather than an expression you might use with someone you’d known for years’.

‘Flattering and flirty’

This picture shows that, ‘Claire and Matt are close in real life as well as on screen, as they use the kind of interest signals that look flattering and even (in Claire’s case) almost flirty,’ Judi says. The fact that Claire is beaming is ‘a grin of approval and interest for his words and his delivery’, rather than just a polite smile.

Eyes for each other

According to Judi, this picture shows Claire and Matt ‘cutting themselves off from any other people using mutual, eye-to-eye contact’; and she noticed the fact the couple are standing in ‘very close proximity’ to each other. We wouldn’t get this close to a lot of our friends – come on guys, who are you trying to kid?
