Hey TGs! This month, try something for us: do everything with confidence. Take up space, speak up, show everyone that you are a boss (you totally are). We know it’s hard to do sometimes and it can feel a lot easier to be quieter and smaller, but what we want for you is the belief in your own awesomesauce, your personal brilliance, the ways you are the best version of you that you can be. This is the #GirlBoss issue, we dedicate it to you, so go forth and do everything #LikeABoss.

Sahhh graceful

I was at the ballet and I needed to go to the bathroom. Mum offered to come but I turned her down, saying, “I’ll be back in a second!” After finally getting through the queue, I went to the toilet. When I finished, the door got stuck! I was tugging on it but the lock wouldn’t budge. I was too embarrassed to yell out so I slid under the door!

Siena

Thanks a hole lot

I was at my friend’s house and we were playing ‘murder in the dark’. I was in, so I had to put an extremely long blanket over my head and walk around trying to tip one of my friends. Two of my mates decided to throw beanbag-sized pillows at me. I tripped over the blanket, fell against the wall and my head went straight through it! I put a hole through my friend’s wall!

Allegra

They lost the plot

One time at school, I was sitting at my desk trying to reach for my pencil. I bent back too far and I fell and my desk came down with me! There were books everywhere. The embarrassing thing was that I was in a class with mostly boys! I was literally just lying there while one boy helped me up and put the books away while the rest of the class snickered. I was red-faced for the rest of the class!

What big feet you have…

I was at my friend’s birthday pool party and I was getting changed out of my bathers. I thought my friend was still in the shower so I called out her name but she didn’t respond. I went up to the door and knocked really loudly. I took a few steps back and realised the feet under the door were WAY bigger than my friend’s feet. I had been knocking on the shower door of a complete stranger! OMG!

Abigail

iHad no idea

I was in class and I was on my iPad looking up how to spell a word. The class was silent and I didn’t notice my iPad was on FULL volume. All of a sudden, a really loud ad came on and everyone looked up at me! The person next to me pointed and said, “It was her!” Everyone started laughing!

Elsie

Barbie girl

I was running into school and my friends came over to hug me but instead, one friend tripped over and accidentally pulled down my skirt – in front of everyone! To make matters worse, they saw my bright pink Barbie undies!

Aaliyah

Fanta fail

I was going to the toilet and when I finished in my cubicle, I accidentally knocked my Fanta over. It spilled all over the floor and I tried to clean it up but it wasn’t working! My dad called to check I was OK because I was taking so long. The cleaner had to shut the whole toilet off!

Lily

A wind instrument

I was in orchestra class and this dude blew the trumpet behind my butt and yelled, “Why did you fart? Ewwww!” Everyone stared at me! Luckily he said I didn’t really fart but it was still so embarrassing!

Sophie

Miah Madden

I went to Bondi Beach in a new bikini… but after 10 minutes in the water, it snapped! I had to find it underwater and put it back together. It took two hours! No one saw anything but it was the most embarrassing moment of my entire life! 11

Cool stuff we’re obsessed with this very second.

MUCH ADO ABOUT DOL ITTLE What has Selena Gomez, Tom Holland, Robert Downey Jr. and lots and lots of animals? Yep, you guessed it – it’s Dolittle, the gorgeous new fantasy flick that’s bound to win your creature-loving heart. Expect awwwor thy moments, adventures and a dream-like quality with such hyper-real animals all hanging out with… the guy you know bes t as Iron Man, hehe. Since we ❤ it so much, read all about it including our chat with Tom Holland on page 28. Then turn to page 43 to find out if you can talk to animals too. Catch it in cinemas from January 16.

Sandwiches for lunch again? Nuh uh. If you want to make like a Katy Perry song and keep things ‘Hot N Cold’, give these a try. Handy! 2) You can keep a slushie or a drinkable yoghurt with you in the Drink Bottle, nice! 3) They have Anna and Elsa on them. Yes, keep things cool with Frozen. Hehe! N O I T A M Y A L C SENSATION ion won her a prize Alma’s excellent animat and taught her heaps!

Name: Alma Age: 13 Hometown: Melbourne, Vic I wasn’t that experienced with claymation. I took one holiday course, for one day, got really interested in it, and when I tried to do it again, it turned out amazing! I saw a lot of flyers for the Tax, Super + You competition and thought it could be fun. I found a song on YouTube [‘Tax Man Max’ by Schoolhouse Rock!, which Alma credited in her video] that was energetic and funny, combined it with claymation and it turned out well. First, I bought supplies. Then I designed characters. I made a little design and different options of characters, then finalised all of them. I used Plasticine and clay, and Monopoly money and the little houses. I only bought the clay and Plasticine; for the rest, I tried to find things around the house.

Check out these cool characters! These are the girls.

Alma, the claymation sensation.

To design the characters of the girls, I didn’t want them to be too girly, too stereotypical. I wanted, like, monsters – cute little monsters and I also made Max [the hero] with one eye. To animate the characters, I took a lot of pictures, it was amazing. Every day I would make a little part, like a scene, and I would always play it with the music and play it again and again and then show it to my parents again and again because I was so happy. I did the editing myself with Filmora software. The whole thing took me a few months. I didn’t know anything about taxes and I do now! Something I learnt is that tax isn’t just money that the government is taking away from you for no reason; they’re using it for something: schools, basically anything that’s public.

When I got into the finals, I was like, ‘That’s amazing. If I don’t win, it’s still good enough, I’m very happy.’ But one day at school, my teacher came running to me like, “You won! You won!” and I was like, “OMG!” I’m going to Canberra and [the competition] is paying for the flight and hotel. And I’m getting an award plus money for me and my school. With the money, 60 per cent I’m gonna save and with the rest I’m going to take my parents out to eat and pay for it. I want other girls to know they shouldn’t give up. I was about to give up but you’ll never know where it might take you.

Setting up the shot.

I think we have a winner!

POKÉMON SWORD AND SHIELD If monster battles are your thing, you’ll want to make the tough decision: are you going to play Sword or Shield? Or both?! Calling all Pokémon trainers, it’s time to get back to the gym! Pokémon Sword and Shield, the series’ first mainline Switch release, have been praised for being solid, hugely fun games for players whether you are a noob or a fan from way back. Will you pick Sword or Shield ? The differences include version-exclusive Pokémon (cool!) and version-exclusive gyms. Whichever you choose, you are guaranteed big-eyed, squee-worthy characters (even the non-Pokémon animals are adorbs, such as a goofy sheep at the start of the Sword version). It’s time to put your skills to the test and see if you’ve got what it takes to be the very best.

Your starter Pokémon of Galar

Grookey: Evolves into a Thwackey then a Rillaboom. Has the ability to grow grass and is full of curiosity.

Scorbunny: Evolves into a Raboot then a Cinderace. Loves to run and can start small fires under its feet.

Sobble: Evolves into a Drizzile then an Inteleon. Can hide itself in water, climb walls and run on two or four feet.

Their single, ‘Empire’, started at number 22 on Billboard’s World Digital Song Sales chart. (Guess who’s right up top? Yes, it’s BTS feat. Lauv.) BYE ISABELA MONER, HELLO ISABELA MERCED

Wondering why Dora the Explorer actress Isabela Moner is going by a different name? While she was born a Moner, she’s changed her last name in tribute to her grandmother. “This is when I begin writing my own story as Isabela Merced,” she wrote late-2019. Isabela explained she wanted to say goodbye to a difficult year and start a new chapter. The name Merced “represents the values that were passed on from my grandmother”, which include her fearlessness and love for family.

MILLIE IS HERE TO

Actress, activist, entrepreneur and… regular teen?! Millie Bobby Brown takes TG’s questions.

You’ve achieved so much at a young age – and your breakout role was almost four years ago (Stranger Things, 2016). How have you grown since the start of your career? I think the general rule is that you only have to do something for 30 days until it becomes a habit – so in terms of being on set I feel more comfortable. When you feel more comfortable, you are more likely to add your own input and put your own creative spin on things. Eleven is such a strong character and a very loyal friend. toria Balde We caught up with Briar Nolet and Vic

Victoria: We both came from dance studios in Canada. I do think because of where we’ve trained (a place of such a high calibre), it gave us room to push forward and aspire to be professional dancers. Last year, you both headlined The Next Step dance tour in Australia. How do you make that happen? B: It’s a lot of work in acting and dancing. It’s of course a show, so we play our characters but on top of that we all train in dancing. It’s been an awesome opportunity to play our characters and ourselves on tour. V: It’s quite a bit of work. Most of the cast worked all summer on set of the show for Season 7. Then we wrapped and the next day got onto a flight for the tour. This doesn’t happen for many people, headlining a tour just as dancers. It’s kind of unheard of; like one in a million. With so many rehearsals, how do you stay driven? B: I love anything that’s a 22

challenge so when we have to rehearse all day I’m like, ‘Yeah, let’s do it.’ What motivates us is each other for sure. V: Whenever I’m tired or complaining about being in rehearsals, I think of the moments when I wasn’t working or any of those moments where I was like, ‘Aww, I wish I was on set today.’ I try to savour every moment. Say you don’t ace an audition or do well in a comp, how do you overcome setbacks? B: I use it as motivation. Both of us, being super competitive in the most friendly way possible, have that determination and mindset of wanting to do our best. Even if I don’t do as well as I hoped, I just take it back to the studio and think of it as, ‘What did they see?’ I listen to their comments. V: It’s like a lesson – ‘OK, that wasn’t good because of X, Y and Z, how can I fix this to be better?’ Both of us are always striving to be better, which is important because it is super easy in this business to be lazy and just be like, OK cool I’m a star now. Do you have any tips for staying motivated? B: I love watching videos. I used to watch videos of dances that inspired me. I think just having people surround you that are very like-minded. Also eat well, get the necessary sleep, and just have a good schedule.

V: I agree, I’m such a film junkie, I could watch like, 20 films in one day to study acting and actresses, also dancers too. Like, what can I take from them? Also, staying in the right circle of people. As a kid, I always knew what I wanted and I wasn’t going to let anyone’s judgement or any of my failures get in the way. B: Everyone’s going to have their opinions about you too. You can’t let what people say affect you. What’s the best advice you can share with TGs? B: Never stay comfortable and always strive to be better. We both started the show when we were really young and we had so much room for growth and every year I feel like I would want to come back better. There’s so much we can learn from each other, let’s inspire each other and lift each other up.

PHOTOGRAPHY DUNCAN BARNES

Hey Briar and Victoria! As TV stars and professional dancers, it sounds like you are living the dream. Is it what you’ve always wanted? Briar: Performing has definitely been a part of our lives growing up, so I feel we’ll always have that love for performing.

‘Lover’ (Remix)

Taylor Swift feat. Shawn Mendes Taylor’s hit ballad has been given a second release, with the ‘Señorita’ heart-throb lending his pipes to this new version. We think calling it a remix is a bit of a stretch – to our ears, not much has been altered musically, except Shawn adding some flavour, obvs. And that’s OK by us. Icing on already delectable cake!

TOM TELLS ALL! Yep, we’re pretty big fans of Tom Holland, the actor / dancer. He chats to TG. Hey Tom! What were the best bits of working on Dolittle? It’s a beautiful story that’s heartwarming and it’s told by so many talented people. I love animals so to be a part of this story has been an amazing experience. Who are your fave animals? My dog Tessa is the absolute best dog in the world. I have to travel a lot for work and she can’t always come with me. If she can’t, I always make sure I FaceTime her. I am not kidding! What is your spirit animal? I am fascinated by a lot of animals. Gorillas are pretty cool though. You play Jip, a sidekick for Dr. Dolittle. Do you think you have similar qualities to Jip? 28

Jip like most dogs is extremely loyal to those that he cares about so that’s a quality I’d like to think I share with him. I think we could all learn a lot from dogs about loyalty. Did you get a chance to hang out much with your incredible castmates? It’s a little different doing an animated film as obviously you don’t need to all be on set at the same time. Dolittle has this amazing cast with so many

talented people. I am sure we will all be in the same room and have a great time at the premiere. What’s it like seeing Robert Downey Jr. in this particular world, a different one from the MCU? We have such a great relationship. He’s one of the biggest movie stars in the world, but from the first day I worked with him he was so kind to me and took me under his wing. I am used to seeing him as Tony Stark so yeah, it was great working with him on something new. He is a really good friend and such a talent. If you could talk to animals, which ones would you most want to speak to and what would you say?

What do you love best about touring? I love touring because I love performing and meeting people. I really try to make it a personal experience for the fans. What do you like to have backstage with you? I try and get a kettle or some form of steaming device because steaming is good for my voice. What has been your ‘pinch me’ moment in your journey so far? The X Factor was a huge one, [representing Australia at] Eurovision was another huge one. Who leaves you starstruck? There’s been a few where I’ve been like, ‘What the heck I can’t believe I just met them’, like Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman, and Tori Kelly. Who are the women who have made you who you are? I didn’t grow up with my mum, Mum and Dad were separated from when I was really young, but my music brought my family back together and really built bridges. Me and my mum are super close now and she’s supported me. Also my manager Christine – she’s pushed me out of my comfort zone, helped me grow into the person I am today, pushed me to dig deep, work hard and try new things. You’re proudly Indigenous Australian. Tell us more… Dad is from the Yorta Yorta tribe and mum is from the Gunditjmara tribe. Both tribes are part of who I am; my ancestors are the traditional ancestors. My totem (spiritual emblem) for the Yorta Yorta is the long-necked turtle. 30

You’re an Indigenous mentor, it must be cool to have kids look up to you. It’s a big part of my job to show them they too can go up and do great things no matter what their skin colour is and where they’re from and no matter what their family circumstance is. I experienced a lot [too] when I was growing up, that’s not only molded me to be where I am today, but I use it to drive me to achieve big things. Can you draw us a self-portrait?

Can you speak to ic Let’s see if you have Dr. Dolittle’s ep

talent!

Have you ever blinked slowly at cat to say ‘I love you’?

KEY Yes No

Fluffy and feathered friends seem to gravita te towards you.

You find yourself asking advice from birds. Your pet responds quickly to your voice. Do you know what it means when a dog tucks its tail between its legs?

Being besties with a gorilla and a polar bear would be amazing.

Parrots only repeat what you say to them.

Trying to understand animals sounds silly.

Yeah!

So incredible! You could be the next Dr. Dolittle. You feel a special connection towards animals and they are drawn to you like a magnet. You always seem to know what your pet is trying to tell you, and your kindness towards animals is a superpower in itself.

You ignore your pet when it makes a noise at you.

Mmm, maybe?

You’re close! Spend some time reading up on animal body language, and also just observing the behaviour of all the magnificent creatures around you. Give it time and maybe next time you’re at the zoo, a lion or two will come over for a chat!

Ah, nope!

Soz! Maybe you’re just not that into animals. But if you are, you just need to put yourself in their shoes… or paws? Start small by getting to know your pet (or a friend’s pet) really well. What do they like? What do they dislike? Then go from there! 43

Video ame critic / tech journalist / entertainer What were some of your fave games growing up? I played a lot of weird little games when I was kid. Like, Mixed-Up Mother Goose, where you have to bring nursery game characters back to their nursery world. You’re a host of a cool TV show. Tell us about your job… I work for Good Game: Spawn Point and most of my week involves playing a game, writing a review of it and shooting that review. It’s fun getting to play a whole bunch of different games all throughout the year but it’s hard work too. What goes into having a job in the gaming and TV industry? It helps to learn a little about how games are made and how they’re crafted because that gives you a bit of insight into what a game actually does. And play lots of different stuff, things that don’t necessarily appeal to you at first but maybe challenge how you think about games and what they can do.

Katie Bouman Super genius Dr Bouman, a computer scientist, made headlines in 2019 for helping capture the first ever photo of a black hole. Her research led to the creation of a new algorithm that allowed scientists to bring the black hole image to life, “a task with a level of difficulty that cannot be overstated”, as CNBC put it.

There’s so many different areas to work with in games, no matter what your skill set or passion is, there’s probably something for you. Be realistic about what your skills are and work towards that. I never wanted to be on TV, I wanted to be a musician. I got to the point where I realised I never was going to be a professional musician, I was never what the industry wanted and I wasn’t quite skilled enough, so instead I started doing stuff with Good Game. The most important thing is to take opportunities that present themselves to you. Everyone could want to do a certain job but only a couple of people are going to get to do it – but that doesn’t mean you can’t do something that’s amazing for you. What are some cool games careers girls can consider? There’s making games: you could be an artist, programmer, or producer. There’s also a lot of work in games media and writing about games. You could also be a narrative writer for games, creating the stories in them. You were a VIP speaker for the opening of Game Masters: The Exhibition, on now in Canberra. Tell us about that. Game Masters is such a cool exhibition. It’s exciting to see the history of games laid out before you. It brings to attention just how far games have come and how intertwined they and culture.

You got started as an activist aged 13, what made you want to stand up and do something? I felt like I didn’t have a voice, or any amount of democratic power; it frustrated me. I saw this random ad [for the marriage equality] campaign and felt, ‘Yeah I really wanna get involved with this, this is a way I can actually do something.’ Doing that gave me this strong sense of purpose. What’s the key to getting people to listen to the messages you want to share? There isn’t really a key for ‘if we speak like this or if we use this platform they will listen to us’. Instead of playing by the rules like writing letters or staging protests after school or on the weekend, we’ve decided to take a drastic form of action and that’s being shown in a heap of different areas of activism, not just climate-based. u think some adults push back against ds? ere just brushed off by [some] politicians, adults ds. Slowly, they started attacking us and now it’s r they feel a bit threatened by us. When they’re scared of what you’re going to achieve, that means you’re doing something right. You’ve given a TEDx talk about youth led movements, what advice do you have for other girls who want to speak up too? omen are often told to stay quiet and we’re old our voice doesn’t matter. You see this from ildhood and it seems to continue into adulthood. nt to say, “This is your space, you can make such erence, it doesn’t have to start with speaking to ly of tens and thousands of people, but joining cal action group for an issue you care about, tarting a club with your friends or even writing eches, writing little articles anyt ing you can to start getting your voice ou’ll feel that strength with confident in it.”

Ash Barty Ace player Queenslander Ashle g y is the No. 1 tennis player in the world in singles, ranked by the Women’s Tennis Association. At 23, the young Indigenous Australian is also the National Indigenous Tennis Ambassador for Tennis Australia. Her No. 1 title was years in the making: Ash has been playing tennis since she was four years old, she competed in the Australian Open as a teen and has been working hard ever since. Ash is super talented and bighearted. The sports star loves dogs and has four ‘fluff balls’ at home (awww). She became an RSPCA ambassador in 2018 and in 2019 donated her $10,000 Fed Cup Heart Award winnings to the animal organisation – with plans to donate more. Our kinda gal.

LILLIAN AHENKAN MTV presenter / DJ / ‘Mrs Claus’ You radiate confidence. Where does it come from? It came from my mum first. When I was younger, about the age of people reading this, my mum affirmed me. She made me feel comfortable with myself because if I was ever focusing on my flaws she would say things like, “Well, you’re very beautiful to me” and “I like your gap teeth”, and “I’m proud you’re my daughter”. Then, later on, someone in my life said, “When you meet people who rub you the wrong way, figure out what it is you’re not loving about them and then make sure you’re not that person for somebody else.” I found it difficult to be around people who were self-doubting, because it made me think about things I didn’t like about myself. Speaking positively about myself built up my confidence.

How can a girl find her own strength and power? Figure out who you are and what makes you, you. That is your own power. My power comes from being able to articulate myself, but that’s not necessarily good or beneficial for everyone. Your power can come from being quieter. Or from being kind. There’s power in being patient, in being a good listener, in being understanding. What career advice would you give a girl who’s just starting high school? Make two lists. The first list has stuff you love to do now: baking cakes, walking dogs. The second list is a sensible list – things at school you’re good at. Like if your teacher says you’re good at maths. Throughout high school, keep updating those lists, being

If her #GirlBoss ’tude is not enough, the singer is also creative director for global fashion brand Puma – her first sneaker collection sold out in three hours. She launched her own beauty line, praised for its inclusivity. The brand was named one of Time magazine’s best inventions of 2017. DAY IN THE LIFE OF A

CEO MY DAY

7.15am: Have a shower and get ready for the day. My best ideas come to me in the shower. Sometimes I write them in the fog on the mirror.

me, I’m really happy. I get to show girls the technology (in this case, LEGO BOOST, a buildable robot) – then solve creative problems on the spot, which is a normal part of technology. I always say the internet is stuck together with sticky tape and we just need to make sure we have sticky tape ready to go.

7.30am: Time for breakfast. Egg on toast with tomato sauce and a cup of tea for me.

12.30pm: Have some lunch and a cupcake. You need some time out or you’ll lose your voice.

8.45am: Today I’m working with LEGO to present in a booth at an event. Time to get moving and meet with people from LEGO and look at the technology I’ll be working with.

1.30pm: Back to it for the afternoon sesh. I’ll talk to more girls and their parents as they come through. With technology, you’re creating something for the world so I want girls to be excited.

9.15am: Go to the bathroom. If you’re talking all day, you’ll never remember to use the bathroom.

4pm: Do some media interviews, post to social media, share messages about the day.

9.20am: Check I’m wearing a name tag. When you introduce yourself, people often forget your name in the first 20 seconds. With a name tag, they can remember it without feeling embarrassed.

6pm: Wrap up, pack down the booth, make sure everything is tidy and say thank you to LEGO for hosting me. It’s easy to forget to say thank you when you’re off to catch a plane, but it’s so important to remember.

10am: Check batteries are charged. With technology, batteries are always running flat. I have to make sure I’m all charged up and ready to go!

6.30pm: Travel to the airport to catch my flight and pop into the lounge to grab a bite to eat on my way to the gate.

10.30am: Event opens up. I’m always a bit nervous at the start but when people start to talk to

9pm: Yay! Back home. Have a bath, sip a cup of tea and grab my favourite book.

7am: Wake up in Sydney, having flown from Melbourne the night before. Catch up on tech news. Twitter is my jam.

Hey Sarah, what’s Girl Geek Academy? A group of women working across technology and games who have come together to teach 1 million girls to build the internet by 2025! What’s cool about being CEO and what’s hard about it? The really cool thing: you get to set a picture of what you want the world to look like and then convince everyone to come along and join you on the journey. The really hard bit: It’s your job to make sure that there’s always money in the bank.

10pm: Before I head to bed, I make sure I am all ready for the next day. If I have another event, I’ll have to unpack my suitcase and repack it. At Girl Geek Academy, we have 20 different suitcases for each event we run! Robot suitcases, coding suitcases, cyber security suitcases… I get the relevant suitcase out and put it in the hallway, ready to go. 10.30pm: I put all my devices on their chargers (phone, laptop and watch) and I go to bed, excited for tomorrow! 59

Out There LADY LIGHTNING Imagine being so fast on your feet that you break one of Usain Bolt’s records. If you’re American runner Allyson Felix, there’s no need to imagine, it’s just reality. Super speedy Allyson, 34, of Los Angeles, California, also broke this record 10 months after giving birth by caesarean. Just add a cape, she’s clearly a superhero. Her record breaking run was in September when she won gold at the track and field World Championships in Doha, Qatar. Having come out #1 at the mixed-gender 4 x 400 metre relay, this was her 12th gold medal at the World Championships. Usain Bolt, considered the fastest guy in history, only had 11 before he retired. Fun fact about Allyson: once she’s done with a competition, she likes to unwind with steak and ice cream. Keep an eye out for the speedy superwoman at the Tokyo Olympics in late July 2020.

About me:

I’m Jessie, TG’s very own blogger. I like telling you guys about my fam and friends, my dog Cotton and kitten Chloe. If you want to be friends, get in touch at totalgirl@nextmedia. com.au.

Blog follower of the month:

Hey TGs! I thought in honour of the #GirlBoss issue, I’d start up my own business. I had a think about what I could do: cake stall? Lemonade stand? Then it hit me: dog-washing! Remember when I learnt about dog grooming at that parlour? I figured I could set up a shampoo, rinse and blow-dry station in my backyard as it’s summer. I dropped a bunch of flyers around town and got my first customer, a sausage dog called Koda (TG’s Rosie’s dog). Luckily Koda was well-behaved and all I had to do is distract her with her toy banana. She also wasn’t that hairy so it was easy. Imagine if I got, like, a Hungarian sheepdog! (they kinda look like mops in the nicest possible way). So I’ve made $30 so far. That’s pretty good! I’m going to reinvest it into my business and buy a bigger bucket for next time. Speak soon,

Jessie the Girl Boss xo

Comments Matt That’s awesome, Jessie! This summer, I want to get some more music out. Got any tips?
