Piers makes at Phillip Schofield

P

iers Morgan has dropped a major hint that the stars of ITV aren’t quite the big happy family that fellow presenter Phillip Schofield makes them out to be. The outspoken Good Morning Britain host hit out at Phil in a scathing rant about the fact that This Morning – hosted by Phil and Holly Willoughby – is up against Good Morning Britain

for the NTA’s Best Daytime/ Live Magazine Show award This Morning has won for past eight years. Piers said, ‘Holly and Phil “What? Us? Us? Little old us? For the 55th consecutive year?” They do their whole, “We’re all one big happy family at ITV.”’ Appearing to confirm that is not the case, Piers then jokingly added, ‘Anyway, I wish

Holly Willoughby is in talks to host a new ITV prime-time show without Phillip Schofield. A source reveals, ‘Holly will be the face of The Real 2020 Games, which is tapping into the hype around the upcoming Olympics. A number of big-name stars are being signed up to take part.’ She co-hosts This Morning and Dancing on Ice with Phil but the pair have been at the centre of a media storm in recent months, with claims of tension between them. ITV denied the claims, saying, ‘Holly and Phil are great friends on and off screen, and popular among viewers and colleagues alike.’

COME BACK? Broken-hearted Harry: ‘I’ll stand by Meghan, whatever the cost’

6

WOMANMAGAZINE.CO.UK

T

he bombshell, when it dropped, resonated around the world. No more HRH – from now on it’s all about Harry and Meghan.

‘We intend to step back as “senior” members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent,’ the couple announced,

‘while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen.’ But the furore about the devastating impact on the British monarchy – and their ‘betrayal’ of the Queen – has simply served to push them further away. And now, friends say, an even more shocking scenario is up for discussion:

Cover Story Harry’s main focus is his wife and child

And if the terms offered by the Royal Family are not up to scratch, the couple could be prepared to pull the plug on Britain altogether. ‘Harry has always felt most at ease when he’s travelling the world,’ says our source. ‘Africa is his happy place, where he can make a real difference to people’s lives and, just as importantly, completely relax. ‘He has found the same feeling in Canada with Meghan and Archie. Just being out of the goldfish bowl for a few weeks was a complete revelation. That’s how they want to live all the time – with a feeling of freedom.’ Meghan’s half-sister, Samantha Markle, thinks this decision to start a new life was all down to the actress, explaining, ‘I feel, and it appeared outwardly that she did enjoy it when there was the “fab four” and there were the photographs of her hair blowing in the wind and the smiling and the waving and the contrived British accent. It was all seemingly great and wonderful then, but when the public began to criticise some of the expenditures and behaviours and protocol that had been broken, the tune changed.’

engagements, which would arguably benefit more charitable projects dear to their hearts, such as the Invictus Games. But why now? What has changed in their lives to prompt such a drastic step? Look no further than Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, who Harry and Meghan welcomed into the world amid such secrecy last May. Claims Harry was worried about being frozen out of the new ‘slimmed-down’ monarchy are wide of the mark. It is his son he worries about. ‘Harry doesn’t want Archie to become some low-ranking royal,’ says our source. ‘He has the chance to make something special of his life, without the royal headaches that have often made Harry miserable. Whether the extremes they have gone to are worth it and no matter who is pushing the accelerator on their exit – Harry will stick by his wife whatever the cost. It’s a massive thing to do and the devastation it has caused for relationships with his blood relatives is nothing short of catastrophic, but he has Archie now to think of too and that’s key. They have high hopes for him. Not to mention any little brothers or sisters who may come along!’ And with her 40th birthday looming next year, Meghan may be keen to add to their brood as quickly as possible. Though it seems very likely any future children of Harry and Meghan will not call the United Kingdom their permanent home, after staff at Frogmore Cottage were ‘moved’, following the announcement of their plans to step back. According to reports, staff – including a house manager and cleaner – will be posted in other areas within royal households, as Meghan and Harry get set o begin their new lives in Canada.

‘THEY WANT A FEELING OF FREEDOM’

the very real possibility that Harry and Meghan may be gone for good. ‘The way she feels right now, the last thing Meghan ever wants to do is come back to these shores,’ a well-placed source tells Woman. ‘If she felt upset before they made their announcement, that was nothing compared to how she feels now. ‘Harry would lay down his life to protect Meghan and Archie, and if Meghan says she wants to stay away for good, then he will look to do that, no matter his feelings.’ But is it what Harry really wants to do? Our source continues, ‘Harry is heartbroken. He is torn between a sense of duty and the love for his family versus his own life with Meghan and Archie. Would he have chosen to do this if it wasn’t for Meghan? Some commentators would say absolutely not, but that we will never know…’

‘HE HAS A fresh start ARCHIE TO THINK OF’

To move to Canada will take money. But experts have predicted that the pair could quickly accumulate a £400 million fortune by cashing in on their global fame. Something many find difficult to align with their very public quest for privacy. Both Harry and Meghan could command million-dollar fees for speaking

Shackles While the finer details

of Harry and Meghan’s life-changing move are still being thrashed out, friends say they’re ‘not in the mood to compromise’ Harry, who has long strained at the leash of royal responsibility, is now trying to renegotiate the rules of engagement. Meghan, a self-made woman, has inspired her husband to take control of his own life and if that means bucking protocol, then so be it.

A wild prince

Now a doting father, once upon a time Prince Harry was a party boy who enjoyed wild weekends in Las Vegas. And his antics made him the embarrassment of the royal family back in 2012, when nude pictures were leaked of him letting loose in Vegas. Prince Harry admitted, ‘I let myself down, I let my family down,’ after the scandal.

FEUDING BROTHERS By its very nature, the Royal Family has a duty to ensure private matters are played out behind closed doors. But the Duke of Sussex threw out the rulebook when he fuelled rumours of a feud with his brother, the Duke of Cambridge. Talking openly in ITV documentary Harry & Meghan: An African Journey, Prince Harry, 35, did little to dispel rumours he’d fallen out with Prince William, 37, when he said, ‘Part of this role, and part of this job, and this family being under the pressure that it’s under, inevitably stuff happens. Newsnight scandal

Prince Andrew hoped his Newsnight interv with Emily Maitlis would help clear the air over his controversial friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. But the fallout from the ‘embarrassing’ and ‘shameful’ interview was so disastrous the Queen was forced to prompt the Duke of York to resign from royal duties ‘for the foreseeable future’. In a statement he said, ‘It has become clear to me over the last few days that the circumstances relating to my former association with Jeffrey Epstein has become a major disruption to my family’s work.’ The Queen was said to be ‘deeply affected’ by the scandal that threatens the future of the Royal Family.

The 38-year-old already had nine points on her licence when she was handed another four, taking her over the 12-point limit.

Charles’ bedtime call

The Prince of Wales left the Queen feeling red-faced in the 90s after an amorous late-night phone call to Camilla Parker Bowles was leaked to the press. The event, labelled Camillagate, happened while Charles was still married to Princess Diana. According to Ken Wharfe – Diana’s former personal protection officer – the backlash was ‘savage’. Writing in his book he said, ‘Establishment figures normally loyal to future King and country were appalled, and some questioned the Prince’s suitability to rule.’

Although Prince Philip – 97 at the time – was not injured, his Land Rover overturned during the collision and he was left ‘very shocked and shaken’. Two other women involved needed hospital treatment, with one suffering a broken wrist. While the Duke initially failed to reach out to the victims, the Queen sent her ‘warmest good wishes’ following the accident, via her lady-inwaiting Mary Morrison. Prince Philip surrendered his licence.

Here, Karen, 37, also tells us about her new home fitness workout plan, Strictly and whether she is ready for marriage and children yet… Hi Karen, after a tough few years, is it nice to have found someone you feel so comfortable around?

It is one of those things when you meet someone. If it clicks, it clicks. The best thing is we are very supportive of one another.

Are marriage and children on the ca for you both?

Right now I am working and I am happy. Being happ is always what I’ve wanted to be. Whatever happens next, it will be natural if something progresses. You have just launched a new workout plan. Is David into fitness too?

Yes! He is incredible and he is a machine! It is one of these things he enjoys and it is really important for us. Our lifestyles are hectic but we always have something where we can both be ourselves. To be yourself with the person you love is great. Tell us more about your new plan…

It was so much fun. I have had plenty of beautiful partners who I absolutely adored but this year was where I really felt like myself. Chris was an amazing human being and family man who had such a brilliant outlook on life – it really inspired me.

Was 2019’s Strictly Come Dancing with Chris Ramsey a real game changer for you? You looked so happy…

I love food too much! I dance eight to 12 hours a day and I have to fuel my body.

What else do you have planned for 2020?

I’ve got the Strictly tour, the Professionals tour and one with Gorka [Márquez]! Do you ever rest?

I’ve got the whole of July off and David and I will probably go to Cornwall and hide for a couple of days! We will definitely rest up. ✱ Karen’s plan costs £50 for eight real-time workouts. For more information, go to karenhauer.fit

e’ve all been there: a relationship ends suddenly or brutally, leaving us feeling something akin to grief, which even diving into a tub of Ben & Jerry’s can’t fix. We lurch from confusion, denial, anger and regret – until, all cried-out, we find acceptance. ‘You’re better off without him,’ friends say, and you promise you’ll never go back. And yet, sometimes the lure of an ex is impossible to resist.

We grieved with Jennifer Aniston when her marriage to Brad Pitt ended in 2005, amid unconfirmed rumours of an affair with Angelina Jolie. At

Absolutely.’ Yet now, both single, the former Hollywood golden couple look to be edging towards a reunion. After 15 years avoiding each other at every celebrity bash going, they reignited a friendship last year, with Brad appearing at Jen’s 50th and her Christmas party, before both attended the Screen Actors Guild Awards recently. ‘She’s a good friend,’ Brad has said. too. My family and I moved away soon after, so he never saw our daughter. I got married in my early 20s and my husband and I went on to have two children – but, deep down, my heart still belonged to Maurice.

Back to the future

After more than two decades, my husband and I separated, and then, in 2010, my daughter, aged 23, revealed Maurice had contacted her on Facebook a few months earlier, and they’d built a relationship. I felt jealous and left out, but happy that she’d reconnected with her father. I was hesitant to meet him myself, though, as the heartbreak still felt raw – even after all those years. By then, I’d moved back to the village I grew up in, so in November 2011, 25 years since we’d last seen each other, Maurice and I met for a drink. We were both nervous, especially when we began talking about the past. He told me he’d only started dating someone else because he thought I didn’t love him. He’d had two long-term relationships, one a marriage, but had never had more kids. ‘You broke my heart,’ I told him. ‘But I’ve only ever wanted to be with you.’ I realised youth and silly misunderstandings had kept us apart, and it was time to let all that hurt go. He was The One. I’d known it at 15,

Hayley Garbutt, 52, lives with husband Maurice, 54, in North Yorkshire. I was only 15 when I first met Maurice, then 17, in 1983, but even so, I knew straightaway he was the love of my life. Inseparable, within a year we’d got engaged and moved into our own flat, and I was desperate to be his wife. Yet, it was a lot of pressure at such a young age, and we’d row, both of us often running off home after a fight. Then, after two years, we discovered I was pregnant. I’d been feeling ill, but hadn’t missed a period, so when the doctor said I was four months gone, it was a shock. With both our mums struggling with the news and becoming involved, and tensions building between Maurice and me, it eventually tore us apart. We had a blazing row, and for weeks after, neither of us attempted to make amends. Then, when I was six months pregnant, Maurice came round, but I was too hormonal and emotional, so sent him away. In September 1986, I gave birth to our daughter, with Mum by my side. I hoped it’d drive Maurice and I to sort things out, as I never believed it was over, but then I heard he was seeing someone else and my heart shattered. I know just how Jen must’ve felt seeing Brad move on so quickly, as I sobbed night after night, hating Maurice, yet loving him,

Finally together: Hayley and Maurice and I knew it now, too. We got back together that night, and that Christmas, Maurice proposed. Our daughter was thrilled, and was a bridesmaid at our wedding in June 2014. It’s always a risk getting back with an ex, especially when they hurt you, but taking a chance on anything is risky. Besides, the path to true love isn’t straightforward and those twists and turns have made me and Maurice stronger. Jen might get her heart broken again, but she could also find the happy ending she’s been searching for – and, if you ask me, it’s worth that chance.

‘DRAW A LINE UNDER OUR HISTORY’

chologist Emma Kenny says: ing a relationship work for the ond time is possible, as long as both work through the issues that sed the breakdown in the first place. efore committing to returning to the nership, you need to, as individuals, own and do a relationship audit, re you work through how you each tributed to the previous breakdown. means you’re accountable and onsible for ‘owning’ your behaviour, hopefully means you won’t repeat same problem patterns again. he key to making your relationship k is drawing a line under your history, nd starting afresh. Bringing up past misdemeanours and resentments is a ure-fire way to ruin any chances you ave of making love work where it once failed. So put in some healthy communication boundaries.

The secret to Monica Cafferky’s 24-year relationship is NOT getting wed

S

itting in the church, listening to the bride and groom promise to cherish one another even when things become tough, my eyes fill with tears. It’s wonderful to see two people declare their love for one another so publicly.

‘What a romantic ceremony,’ I say, glancing at my partner, Chris, and thinking about how we met in 1995. I was 25 and had just moved into a houseshare in Huddersfield, and Chris, then 34, was one of my housemates. He’d enthral me with incredible stories about his world travels, plus he was honest, kind and reliable, all traits I value. Romance blossomed over late-night MTV (in the days before Netflix) and there was no doubt Chris was the perfect man for me. There still isn’t, and he’s told me many times he feels the same. Even so, while weddings fill me with joy, and I love Chris more than anything, you’ll never catch me walking down the aisle. And it’s not like I’ve never been asked – I have, three times, all pre-Chris, but marriage simply isn’t part of my life plan, and never has been. My first proposal came when I was 18 years old, and my much-older boyfriend drunkenly blurted out we should marry. I laughed in response, and we split up a few weeks later. Then, in my early twenties, a man I’d just broken up with tearfully proposed, to which I gently said no. The final offer came soon after, but we’d not been dating long, so I said no. That relationship didn’t last, either.

Monica with her partner Chris Marriage seemed such a big, scary commitment, particularly as I’d been known to swing from being madly in love with someone to, a few weeks later, being annoyed by their loud breathing. I wasn’t alone in developing certain relationship peccadilloes – one friend split up with her boyfriend because she didn’t like how he walked, while another dumped a man because of how he ate. Then I met Chris, and while I adored everything about him (well, most of the time) I liked the idea that if I changed my mind, I could leave – no messy divorce, no lawyers. Neither of us wanted children and I’m sure this affected our decision. When my friends all started marrying off, I enjoyed celebrating their happiness, but it didn’t change my mind. In fact, it did the opposite when I saw the cost. The typical marriage bill is £30,000. ‘I’d rather pay off the mortgage,’ I told Chris, who was in total agreement. I also knew that if I married Chris, I’d somehow feel answerable to him – something I noticed with friends. When I fancied going to Ibiza on a yoga retreat, I didn’t want to have to consider Chris, and I wanted to be able to work into the night on my latest novel without having to worry what he thought.

WORDS: MONICA CAFFERKY

‘I’D RATHER PAY OFF THE MORTGAGE’

As a writer, my name is a huge part of my identity, so I didn’t want to give that away, either, and it’s only recently become acceptable for women to keep their own name after marrying. But mainly, I wanted being together to always be a choice, not an obligation. Now, Chris and I have been together for 24 years, and like most couples we’ve had tough times – yet we’ve outlasted many marriages. However, I’d never disagree with anyone who wanted to get married – as that’s their choice – and I’ll treat myself to a new outfit and swoon as they walk down the aisle. However, a piece of paper doesn’t guarantee someone’s love, faithfulness and kindness – that’s all down to the individual. ✱ The Winter’s Sleep by Monica Cafferky (£9.99, Jasper Tree Press) is out now

I LOVE YOU, MUM

ost expectant mothers dream about their children’s futures – wondering whether they’ll be shy, smart or wonderfully chatty – and I was no different when my daughter Sophie was born. But what do you do when doctors tell you your seemingly perfect baby has an incurable genetic disorder? How do you come to terms with knowing she’ll need lifelong care and you’ll never hear her call you ‘Mummy’, or say ‘I love you’?

My husband, Mark, then 31, and I were overjoyed when I fell pregnant in April 24

2014, especially as I’d suffered irregular periods as a teenager and doctors had warned I might struggle to conceive. In January 2015, aged 29, I gave birth to 6lb baby girl Sophie, and she seemed utterly perfect in every way, with her smattering of dark hair and her big, brown eyes. She’d giggle as I blew raspberries on her belly – and although she suffered a bit with reflux, causing her to projectile vomit her milk, I was told lots of babies did. But, by March 2015, at 10 weeks, Sophie was still struggling to hold her head up

like other babies her age were doing. Instead, it lolled slightly to the right. At first, doctors told us not to worry, assuring us that Sophie would get stronger – only she didn’t, and by six months old she couldn’t roll over and would just slump in her high chair.

A specialist taught Sophie and me how to use the machine and, amazingly, it took her just a few weeks to master it. From then on, our lives became easier as Sophie could ask for exactly what she wanted without any guesswork involved. She became more independent and confident – until, one day when we were sitting around not doing anything much, Sophie looked at me. ‘I love you, Mum,’ she said. It was a bittersweet moment, as it wasn’t her voice – I’ll never get to hear that – but just knowing it came from her heart meant everything to me. Tears welled as I told her I loved her, too. Now Sophie, five, has been using the machine for over a year and can form full sentences. It’s given her a childhood, and she even takes it to school to chat to her friends like any child her age. We still don’t know what the future holds for Sophie, but we cherish every moment with her and every single word she has to say.

USE YOUR JUDGEMENT

Julia Roberts

Experts are divided when it comes to face oils, but really it comes down to the individual. If you love the way they feel and don’t experience any issues, crack on. If you try one and break out, stick with serums and creams. A good rule is to avoid oils with a high comedogenic (poreclogging) rating, which runs from 0-5 and is easily googled. The worst-rated are flax seed, soybean and wheatgerm, whereas argan and hemp seed oils come out on top.

BE GENTLE ON CONGESTION

‘When our skin is going through a rough patch, the first response is to go on the attack,’ says facialist and Kyūshi founder Alice Moore. She recommends a gentler approach with Kyūshi Chamomile & Helichrysum Oil, £39, which has antiinflammatory properties.

Jennifer Hudson

TRY A MASSAGE

BKNEOAWU-HTOYW

Facial massage boosts circulation, helps drain excess fluid to de-puff and feels amazing as long as you avoid the dreaded drag. A facial oil gives plenty of ‘slip’ so your fingers will glide over skin without pulling it around. Spread on The Ordinary 100% Plant-Derived Squalane, £5.50, a nicely uncomplicated nourishing oil, and work fingers up your jawline and cheekbones.

Beauty Fearne Cotton

MIX IT WITH MAKE-UP

If you’ve got dry, dull skin it can be tempting to pile on primers and highlighters, which can look a little fake. Instead, try a tiny drop of oil either under or mixed in with your foundation. Revolution Gold Elixir Rosehip Seed Oil, £9.99, sits beautifully under make-up and has tiny gold flecks for added radiance.

FOR CLEANSING

AVOID IRRITANTS

There’s a beauty myth that natural equals gentle. Actually, essential oils can be some of the worst culprits for irritating sensitive skin, so it pays to pick wisely. Generally speaking, peppermint, lavender and tea tree oil can be aggravating, especially in high concentrations. No need to throw away your lavender bath oil though, as long as it’s well-diluted.

BALANCE IT OUT

PHOTOS: GETTY

Women with dry skin are usually happier to try face oils than combination types, but anyone can benefit. ‘Whether you have an oily or dry complexion, oil can help balance your skin’s function,’ says Melissa Jochim, founder of High Beauty. ‘Oil cuts oil and if your skin is oily it will send a signal to your skin to slow down sebum production. If you have dry skin, a facial oil is going to help replenish the moisture.’

TASTE THE BENEFITS

If you’re unsure about using oils on your skin, how about getting the benefits another way? CBD oil is the one everyone is talking about, and although we await hard evidence, users rave about its effects on skin inflammation and more. Try a few drops of Zoetic CBD Oil, £45, under your tongue before bed. It’s not cheap, but will last you several months.

Naomi Campbell

OIL FOR ALL Oils make incredibly effective cleansers, as they dissolve make-up and grime quickly, so you won’t have to rub at your skin. Unlike many face washes they don’t contain surfactants, so leave skin soft and comfy, not tight and dry. Oils also take a little time and elbow grease to properly work into skin and wash off, which is a great way to ensure you cleanse thoroughly every night. We love Sanctuary Spa Ultimate Cleansing Oil, £8.

FOR THE BODY

There’s nothing like slathering on body oil after a relaxing bath to feel like you’re really treating yourself. You don’t have to spend big for an indulgent spa vibe – try Palmers Cocoa Butter Formula Moisturizing Body Oil, £5.39, which smells like heaven and leaves skin soft and sweetly scented all day.

FOR HAIR

Oily hair doesn’t sound like a good thing, but used carefully a light treatment offers softness, slip and quenches frazzled ends. Run half a pump of L’OrŽal Elvive Extraordinary Oil Fine Coconut Oil, £9.99, through mid lengths and ends when your hair is wet or, even better, apply a few pumps dry as an overnight treatment. Just make sure it’s the night before you change your sheets!

FIBRE Hit your daily fibre intake and boost your health with these tips

D

espite it being an essential nutrient, did you know that many of us aren’t getting enough fibre in our diets? The recommended daily intake of fibre for adults is 30g a day, but according to the British Nutrition Foundation, many Brits are consuming much less than this – with women averaging a mere 17.2g a day*. Never fear, as with just a few tweaks to your meals and snacks, you can boost your fibre intake and feel better for it.

WHY IS FIBRE SO IMPORTANT?

‘Dietary fibre is the part of carbohydraterich foods indigestible by our digestive enzymes,’ explains nutritional therapist Natalie Lamb. ‘It’s found naturally in all fruit and vegetables, as well as in the cell walls of wholegrains such as oats, beans, nuts and seeds.’ Eating a diet high in fibre aids healthy bowel movements by adding bulk to stools, but it also feeds the good bacteria in your colon and keeps you feeling full after eating. So get stuck in!

Did you know?

There are two different types of fibre found in food: soluble and insoluble. Soluble fibre – which is in fruit, vegetables, oats and pulses – turns into a gel-like substance during digestion and can slow down the emptying of the stomach, making us feel fuller. It’s also been shown to help stabilise blood pressure and blood-sugar levels. Insoluble fibre can be found in wholegrain breads and cereals, nuts and seeds, as well as fruit and vegetables and adds bulk to the stool, helping it move through the bowel.

BODY SHAME Two women tell us about the abuse they’ve received – and how they’re rising above it

‘HE KNEW THAT THOSE NASTY THREATS WOULD REALLY INTIMIDATE ME’

Naomi Isted, 40, a TV presenter who lives in Essex, was on holiday in St Lucia when online trolls made vile comments about her.

I booked a birthday holiday to St Lucia in February last year, determined to enter my fifth decade with a bang. I felt really confident about turning 40 and, after the hard work I’d put in at the gym, thought I was looking toned and fit. Then my world came crashing down. On the day of my birthday, I was trolled for bikini pics and the comments were horrendous. ‘What a state she looks for 40,’ one snarled. ‘She needs a tummy tuck,’ blasted another. ‘Cottage-cheese bum,’ sniped someone else. I was devastated reading them, they were so vile. It felt like a physical shock. My husband, Haydn, 46, a property developer, tried to reassure me. He was very protective and completely disgusted that people would say things like that to me. He told me I was in amazing shape and these people were just jealous idiots hiding behind their computer screens. But I started to question everything. It wasn’t that I thought I had a perfect body – I’ve got two kids, Fleur, 10, and Rocco, four – but I was happy thinking I was the best version of myself. ‘Am I seeing something different to what everyone else is seeing?’ I asked myself, and went into a downward spiral, becoming increasingly paranoid. I started to look for new cellulite treatments, research tummy tucks and did loads of Body Coach

workouts. I’d had the odd comment on Instagram in the past, but this was another level – and no one had ever said anything to me in real life. It was mostly men. I think it’s jealousy. They’re trying to break people’s confidence.

Unhappy lives On another occasion, I even got

death threats for an article I did about flying first class. My husband was deleting emails that were coming through in the middle of the night. He was devastated and wanted to protect me because he knew those threats would really intimidate me and hurt my feelings. Of course, I get supportive comments, too, but you zone in on the nastiness and the negativity. It’s taken me months to get over it. Now, I’m determined not to let these sad keyboard warriors break me. They must have unhappy lives if they’re hiding behind a computer screen saying horrible things. For the most part, I feel fine – but if I’m having a bad day, it’s hard not to let the doubts creep back in.

Body shape is a fat factor

Watch your waist

A really simple way to gauge obesity risk is with your waistline measurement, says Dr Campbell. ‘For women, if it’s greater than 80cm you have a problem.’

5

Fat matters

It’s unhealthy to store too much, but fat has an important job to do in the body. ‘We get energy from our fat stores, and it’s what keeps us warm,’ says Yvonne. ‘The fat-soluble vitamins A, E, D and K are absorbed in body fat, and these are important vitamins for health.’ Fat – or adipose tissue as it’s medically called – also keeps the internal organs in place, and acts as a physical cushion, protecting the body from trauma.

6

Eating less isn’t enough

‘Dieting gets weight loss off to a good start, but evidence shows that women who diet and also increase their physical activity are more likely to shed fat and keep it off long term,’ explains Dr Campbell.

‘I DON’T MIND THE ODD ROW’ Mum, Trish, 50, says:

It’s a modern version of Little Women. Those girls didn’t have a family WhatsApp about who ate the last doughnut. Iseult was our first, so I think she had the most pressure. Alice is vocal and opinionated. Celeste has lots of empathy, and being third she’s got the freedom the older two didn’t but wasn’t babied like Darcy, who will soon be as tall as her sisters. They rarely disagree, unless it’s about clothes, but we try to let them sort it out themselves. The flip side is their bond. Alice had a tricky time with friends and Iseult helped her. They support each other, so I’ll take the odd row.

starting a family are just some reasons for this drop. But with less people having large families, those with children all the same sex are even rarer. Woman speaks to the Jones family about what it's like to have, not only four daughters, but four daughters between 12 and 18.

‘WE CAN BE A HANDFUL’ Alice, 17, says:

I like being second. Iseult is the one who had to do everything first, like exams, but I have some experience thanks to her and she can offer advice. Mum is definitely stricter with me and Darcy than Iseult and Celeste, but I think that’s maybe because I argue the point more. I love each of my sisters for different things. They do have their negative points, though, too. If I have children myself when I’m older, I definitely won’t have four. I know we can be a handful, especially when we were younger. I don’t know how Mum and Dad put up with us all!

‘I DEMANDED OUR PET DOG WAS MALE’ Dad, Michael, 48, says:

People commiserated with me when we found out Darcy was going to be our fourth daughter, but that irked me. It implied I’d be missing out on things, and nothing could be further from the truth. When we discussed getting a dog, I was adamant we have a male. He’s called Dave. Trish and I spend most of our lives as unpaid taxi drivers and I’ve done my share

Though there are other little squabbles, there’s never been anything so bad we’ve had to intervene. I know they don’t find me funny but I’ll send them jokes even if it makes them roll their eyes. It’s a privilege having four daughters. I’ve learnt so much.

MEET THE FAMILY Trish Jones, 50, a counsellor, and husband Michael, 48, a lawyer, are mum and dad to Iseult, 18, Alice, 17, Celeste, 15, and 12-year-old Darcy, and live in St Albans, Herts.

‘IT’S HARD BEING THE OLDEST’

Iseult, 18, says:

I used to hate being the oldest. I got the blame for everything. It’s changed as I’ve got older, though. Now I actually like being the oldest. I can vouch for them in a way they can’t for me. I had a harder time, though. I had to do chores and I had a strict curfew, too. While the younger ones sometimes turn to me for advice, I don’t have that. I used to want one or two kids, but if I have my own when I’m older, four is a good number.

Celeste, 15, says:

I’ve learned so much from having two older sisters. They’ve experienced everything I’ve been through and are great with advice. Being third, I’ve managed to slip under the radar. Being third in a family of four children is the best position. I’m not overlooked but can get away with things because of where I sit. I wouldn’t want to be Darcy. When the three of us leave home, all eyes will be on her and she’ll have all Mum and Dad’s attention.

‘THERE ARE UPSIDES TO BEING THE YOUNGEST’ CELESTE

DARCY

Darcy, 12, says:

I get babied a lot – but then there are upsides to being the youngest, too. My sisters are brilliant for helping with homework. I’m closest to Alice – our hobbies are similar, like singing and drama. We sometimes get split up at dinner because we’re talking too much and not including everyone else. Whenever I have a performance, they all come to watch. I’ve got a good reputation with teachers at school because of them, too. They worked hard and did well, so teachers think I’m like them.

Ask SUZIE

IS HE CHEATING?

Infidelity doesn’t have to be physical

Q

I was promoted last year and it’s meant I now travel. One week every month I’m away from home Monday to Thursday. My husband said he was fine with this, but now we’re arguing and he says it’s because I’m paranoid and jealous. He has a work colleague and it seems to me she’s become a lot more. It’s not just that I know he sees her most evenings I’m away but they seem to text each other all the time. He swears there is nothing going on but it seems she snaps her fingers and he jumps.

Suzie says

A

Apologists insist that as long as you haven’t actually ‘done it’, it’s not an affair. They often go further and insist constant contact, sexy texts and even getting naked but not having full penetrative sex still means it’s not an affair. Tosh. If one partner spends more emotional intent on another person – and seeing her most evenings, texting each other and even turning away from you most certainly counts as emotional intent – something is most certainly going on. Book a session with a counsellor and thrash it out. You both need to hear what the other feels. The result may be staying together or parting. Whichever, it’s better to have an honest conversation than carry on as you are. See relate.org.uk for help in your area.

Is my daughter being truthful?

Q

My daughter will be finishing her final year at university soon and she has landed a job in California in her profession. about ‘their’ plans to set up home here in the UK. Should we say anything?

Suzie says

A

One of the sad aspects of the social media generation is that they’ve lived their entire dating experience in a world where people can be ghosted and cut off when no longer wanted. She doesn’t need a lecture but I would tell her what was said to you and ask her if she needs any support in doing the decent thing and finishing with him properly. Your discussion may cause her embarrassment but she’ll feel far worse if she does it the cowardly way.

OUR GRANDKIDS ARE AT RISK

Q

We often have our young grandchildren to stay or take them for days out. We have child seats fitted in both my and my husband’s cars and are very careful. So I was shocked when our son-in-law dropped them off a few weeks ago in his car, with no car seats. He was offhand, saying it was only a mile or two and he drives carefully. I now realise that most times he takes them out he does it in his car rather than the family car, with no child seats. What should we do?

Suzie says

A

There are plenty of parenting issues about which you might need to take a step back. Except when it’s a matter of safety. There are no half measures when it comes to car seats. However carefully you drive, you may get hit by an idiot who isn’t taking care. Tell him in no uncertain terms that unless he’s prepared to realise this and act accordingly, you’ll bring your daughter into the conversation and let her impress it upon him.

Will I need dentures?

My mother lost all her teeth, but I am 60 and my teeth seem to be OK still. Should I expect to need dentures like my mother and most of her generation did?

If you have healthy teeth and regularly attend the dentist then I hope that you will not need dentures. The teeth of generations past were indeed often in poor health,

COULD CANNABIS BE THE CURE?

Q

My husband has always suffered with anxiety; do you think using CBD or a cannabis-related product could be useful?

Philippa says

A

PHOTOS (POSED BY MODELS): GETTY

Cannabis is illegal, so I can’t recommend it. There are two components of cannabis, THC is the part that makes you high and CBD, which is legal in the UK. However, researchers have looked at the results of more than 80 studies into cannabis and mental health issues and have concluded that there is no evidence that medical cannabis could relieve symptoms. Also, there is evidence that it can worsen or contribute to anxiety and depression. I’d advise that your husband sees his GP.

A

From a cardiovascular health and fitness point of view, walking is definitely better than sitting on the Tube. But the Underground has some of the most pollution in the UK, especially due to years of accumulated dust and deep lines with little ventilation. It seems that the risk on the Tube is greater than the risk of walking in the street and, if diesel cars are banned in London (as they are due to be in Bristol in the daytime), then this difference will become even greater. So it may be better in many ways to walk!

It might seem strange, but popping a probiotic might nip a niggling headache in the bud. A study from ProVen Probiotics showed that those people who took a probiotic once a day for six months had a 30% reduction in headaches.

BREAST CHECKS ARE SO PAINFUL

Q

I am due to attend my latest mammogram, but I always hate going for it; they squish my boobs really hard and it hurts. Isn’t there another test they can do for breast cancer, like a blood test?

Philippa says

A

There is a national screening programme for breast cancer, which offers mammograms every three years to those between the ages of 50 and 70 (though you can ask for one after 70 three yearly, you just won’t automatically be sent a letter). The mammogram involves taking an X-ray of the breasts. They are placed between two X-ray plates and there can be a short lasting, squishing sensation. Currently there isn’t a blood test, but a new one is being researched that could detect breast cancer even up to five years before a lump, or another symptom occurs. This test looks for auto-antibodies that could signify cancer. However, it’s still in the trial stage, so at the moment the screening programme is the use of mammograms. But please, do go to your mammogram.

If you’re after brighter teeth, try Glow32 Teeth Whitening System (£30, Boots). The whitening strips and pen combo deliver results without the use of peroxide for a glowing smile.

Ask LINDA

Woman’s vet, Linda Simon, answers your pet problems

MY YORKIE HAS BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH CUSHING’S – WHAT IS IT?

Basically, Cushing’s is the overproduction of the stress hormone cortisol. It’s typically caused by a benign growth within the pituitary gland of the brain. Less often, there’s a tumour of the adrenal gland. A final potential cause would be a reaction to prolonged corticosteroid medication. Raised cortisol levels result in a dog that is excessively thirsty and always hungry. Dogs may also develop fur and skin complaints and a pot

belly, and many will begin to pant excessively. Signs can come on slowly, so it is not always obvious to an owner that their dog is unwell. These symptoms are not unique to Cushing’s disease, so it’s important to run tests before assuming a diagnosis. Initially, vets will do some basic blood and urine work, followed by more specific blood tests for confirmation. Once a diagnosis has been reached, treatment can begin. The vast majority are managed with daily tablets that get the disease under control quickly. Regular check-ups and blood tests ensure dogs are responding well. Treatment is lifelong, and most dogs go on to live relatively normal lives.

Are gerbils a good pet for children?

G

erbils are fascinating creatures that make wonderful pets for children and adults alike. Not only are they intelligent and curious, many enjoy interacting with people and can form very close bonds with them.

These little creatures make wonderful pets

Unlike hamsters, they do not have cheek pouches, so they will hoard their food instead. In the wild, they would keep these stores in various locations within their burrows. As these little ones originated in the desert (in places such as Mongolia and Algeria) they can withstand quite warm weather and have adapted to produce less urine, in order to store water. Gerbils are very sociable – they enjoy the companionship of other gerbils, and would naturally live in large groups of 10 or more. In act, keeping a gerbil lone is not advised, nd all should live with t least one friend.

ARE RAWHIDE TREATS SAFE TO GIVE MY COCKER SPANIEL?

R

awhide bones and treats are made from the hide of animals such as cows and horses, flavoured to make them more appealing. They can help keep teeth clean and provide hours of chewing contentment. While many dogs will go their whole life eating rawhide without experiencing any issues, this is not always the case.

Some dogs may experience choking, a gut impaction or constipation, especially if they bite the chew up into large pieces and swallow them whole. It’s advised that chewing is supervised to ensure dogs are gnawing on the treats rather than eating big bits. For sensitive dogs that get upset stomachs, it’s best to steer clear altogether.

Expert solutions for your sex and relationship dilemmas

Our height difference is a problem

Q

My new partner is a strapping 6ft 2in, I’m a tiny 5ft 1in. This wasn’t a problem at first as we were simply cuddling. But now we’re getting down to the serious business of intercourse, the only really easy sexual position is side by side, and we’re getting bored with that. Can you suggest other moves to help us bridge the gap?

CAN MEN FAKE AN ORGASM?

Q

I’ve noticed that my boyfriend doesn’t seem to be ejaculating when he climaxes. At least, there’s no liquid when he comes, though all the other signs are there that he’s enjoying himself. Is there something wrong – or is he faking it?

Susan says

A

Research suggests that 58% of men have faked orgasm at some time, usually because they feel embarrassed about taking a long time to climax. But your man could be ill, or a medication he’s taking could be affecting his sperm. So have an honest discussion about it. If he’s faking it, reassure him that he doesn’t need to do that to impress you. If he’s not faking, encourage him to see his GP.

Susan says

A

Hop on top! Whether you face him or have your back to him, your height won’t be an issue. Or, lie with your pelvis at the edge of the bed while he kneels or stands. Be a little adventurous and sit on a stool or counter with your legs round his waist.

How can I give her a great massage?

Q

We have a truly wonderful relationship both in bed and out. But my girlfriend keeps talking about how her last partner used to give her a relaxing massage before they had sex. I want to oblige, but I’ve never even tried massage, and am nervous that I won’t match up to what she’s had before. I’d be really grateful for any tips on how I can learn to massage brilliantly.

Susan says

A

There are lots of YouTube videos on delivering massage. So watch one together, with your girlfriend telling you which moves she’d prefer and which she wouldn’t like. Then get her to massage you, so you experience the style she prefers. When your turn comes to deliver, begin with a few ‘rehearsals’ that don’t lead on to sex, so you can get her feedback. Finally, try out various moves even if they’re different to what she’s used to. With time, you’ll be even better than he was!

HAVE WE MISSED THE BOAT?

PHOTOS (AS POSED BY MODELS): GETTY

Q

My husband and I met through our local church, and agreed that because of our religious beliefs, we wouldn’t make love before getting married. Neither of us are youngsters; we’ve both been widowed for a while, and so we were nervous. On our wedding night we talked and cuddled, but then went to sleep. Now, eight months later, we love each other more than ever but still haven’t had sex. Is it too late to start?

Susan says

A

It’s never too late. Begin slowly – hold hands, kiss, snuggle up and become comfortable with simple physical closeness. Then talk things through, share your fears,

regain your confidence. But also, don’t think you absolutely must make love. Create a marriage that’s right for you, happy and fulfilled whether with passion or without. Sex is not compulsory.

THREE DAYS OF VALENTINE’S FUN

For 72 hours before Valentine’s, agree with your partner not to have intercourse. Then make those three days a real tease – leading to a glorious sex session.

12 February

Today, send each other naughty text messages and leave post-it notes saying what you’ll do to each other on 14th. At night, talk dirty and spin fantasies. But no body contact is allowed – not even in bed.

13 February

Today, touch and kiss but nothing more. At night give each other a naked massage, or perhaps shower together but with no genital contact. Then watch a movie that turns you both on.

14 February

Today is the day! Firstly, each of you specifies your three favourite sexual activities. Then take it in turns to deliver those to each other, with the end result being an amazing climax for both of you.

The city BY THE BAY

Only seven miles square, San Francisco boasts some heady inclines, historic quarters and the dazzling Golden Gate Bridge

Why go?

WORDS: HELENA CARTWRIGHT PHOTOS: GETTY, ALAMY

Famous for its beautiful waterfront, steep rolling hills, eclectic mix of architecture and soaring orange bridge, San Francisco has so much to offer. The hardest part is deciding where to go first… well, that and packing for the city’s famously unpredictable weather.

Some of the steep inclines are frankly stomach-dropping

48

CHECK OUT THE WATERFRONT

San Francisco’s waterfront neighbourhoods have some fabulous views and utterly different personalities. Start your walk at or near Pier 24 beneath the Bay Bridge, then walk northwest towards the Ferry Building and Pier 39. Between the two locations, a former

maritime no-man’s-land now houses the relocated Exploratorium, as well as a $90-million cruise-ship terminal; Alcatraz Landing; wonderful artisan food shops; fashionable waterfront restaurants and pedestrian-friendly piers. For a special meal, try delicious Peruvian food at La Mar (lamarsf.com). Split into three spaces – a rustic happy-hour bar, an airy dining room and a large patio with an unobstructed view of the bay – its overall ambience is welcoming and calm. It’s a sharing menu, so order plenty and tuck in! Try the flat iron steak skewers with accompanying cocktail.

The Golden Gate Bridge

Nothing beats the view from perhaps the USA’s most famous bridge. The spectacular icon towers 746ft above the Golden Gate Strait, the narrow entrance to San Francisco Bay. You may spot one of the daredevil painters who frequently repaint the bridge as part of the maintenance programme. On a clear day, hop aboard a vintage fire engine for a 90-minute tour (sanfranciscofireengine tours.com), which The iconic bridge crosses the bridge.

VISIT PRISON

Visiting Alcatraz (alcatrazcruises.com), feels like going to purgatory. Seeing this military fortress-turnedmaximum-security prison is like no other experience, and your mind will be filled with amazing stories from the legendary prison island. Catch the ferry near Pier 39. It will drop you off at the bottom of

Alcatraz Island a 130ft high hill, which you’ll have to ascend to reach the cell block. Buy your tickets well in advance, wear sturdy shoes and bring extra layers – it’s often windier and colder on Alcatraz.

Take a food tour

To get to the heart of San Fran’s food scene, join the Mission District Food Tour (avitaltours.com). It’s a stroll through the historic Latin neighbourhood that showcases the trendiest restaurants in the area and relates the city’s culinary history. The four-course, progressive dining experience takes in four delightful restaurants, where you’ll enjoy two appetisers, a main and a dessert with a side of fascinating stories to accompany your meal.

TOP TIP

If there’s one word to describe San Francis co in summer, it’s ‘fogg y’. Plan to head out in September for better, brighter weather.

The Palace Hotel was destroyed by the earthquake of 1906

WHERE TO STAY

The Palace Hotel (marriott. com) is a landmark historic hotel in downtown San Francisco, just off busy Market Street. Once destroyed by the great earthquake and fire of 1906, it’s been restored to its former beauty. We especially love the architectural details that recall a bygone era and feature Austrian-crystal chandeliers, tall, mirroredglass doors and bronzefiligree marble columns.

£1,500 win!’ Karen with her £1,500 cheque

Karen Bell, 38, from Stockton, spent her win on family trips, and Christmas treats!

L

ooking at my long list of Christmas gifts, I was so excited to treat my loved ones. I couldn’t wait to see their faces on the day.

You see, early last year, I’d had a huge win on Woman Bingo. It was May 2019 and I’d just put my twin boys, two, to bed. I was waiting for my husband Chris, 41, to come home from work. Before our babies were born, I’d go to the bingo halls with friends. But now I prefer to play at home. There’s so much choice on Woman Bingo. There’s even an app I’ve downloaded onto my phone. After Chris arrived, we chatted about his day during dinner then settled down in front of the TV for the evening. ‘A quick game of Woman Bingo, I reckon!’ I said. ‘Enjoy,’ Chris replied. Logging on, I could see a Crystal Maze Bingo game was minutes away from starting. So, I got cracking, made a deposit and purchased some tickets for 25p each.

He had to do a double take as I showed him, I’d won a Full House and scooped £1,500. We were both over the moon. ‘What are you going to spend it on?’ Chris asked the next day. I knew that the kids would see most of it. The twins were obsessed with animals. So, using our winnings, we took them to a petting zoo where they could be hands-on with rabbits and all kinds of miniature beasts. Then we took them to a safari park to see bigger creatures. ‘WOW!’ they gasped as they saw the lions, tigers and elephants. It was amazing to spoil them.

Then, I couldn’t believe my eyes – number 3! ‘Congratulations’ flashed on screen. ‘Chris, look, I’ve won!’ I shrieked, chucking him my phone. 50

It was a wonderful Christmas and it was amazing to be able to use my Woman Bingo win on fun family adventures!

Win-win

With my win, I bought a new vacuum cleaner and new beds for me and my son, 17. After my win, Rebecca decided to join Woman Bingo and she loved it. A few weeks later, while playing Sapphire Bingo, I won another £200! While celebrating, my phone rang. It was Rebecca and the same words fell out of our mouths simultaneously… ‘I’ve won £200!’ We’d won at the same time! We really are two of a kind and now we both share a love of Bingo too.

which makes me, and I think many others, weep like a madwoman! doing her job to her full ability. I love that it gets a mention. Women are still judged for taking time off for such reasons but I think we need to stop being ashamed about it and be totally upfront about it. What do people love about the show? I think people connect to the fact that it represents ordinary working people. Also, it promotes kindness and empathy,

View from THE BACK Sam Carlisle says what you’re thinking

Do they really think it’s all over? Judging by Louise’s new lyrics, her marriage to Jamie may be over, but their story isn’t

Louise has found her sense of purpose again

she admits she found herself in the same situation as many women when their children grow up. She says, ‘Jamie had a very, very full life. I was just going, “Well, what’s next for me?”’ Then the Strictly Come Dancing offer arrived on her doormat. Louise forced herself to take part and fell back in love with performing. She says, ‘It’s what gives me confidence and makes me feel I’m worth something. I felt like I needed to have a bit of fire again.’ She is still respectful of her ex. ‘This is about how I felt as a person. I adore him and always will.’ Former Liverpool star Jamie said recently he could never do as well as his dad Harry on I’m a Celebrity because he ‘doesn’t have a Sandra’. Meaning there’s no strong woman, like his mum, by his side. Ironically, that’s exactly the person Louise has become in this third stage of her life. They think it’s all over? Perhaps for Louise and Jamie it isn’t.

MATCH-BAKING

David Walliams said his mum loves Paul Hollywood so much he is going to sit her next to the Bake Off judge at a TV awards ceremony. I wouldn’t rate your chances, Kathleen Given Hollywood’s dating history, unless you pull pints behind a bar you’re very unlikely to pull the master baker.

ouise Redknapp has a new album out. There’s a song on there about the breakdown of her 19-year marriage to ex-England footballer, Jamie. She sings poignantly, ‘You said I didn’t need them. You would lift me up. You were wrong. I should have fixed it before it was unfixable.’ Let’s rewind. Louise had a successful career with girl band Eternal before her marriage. Although the couple lacked for nothing financially,
