“THE FASHION INDUSTRY IS BIG BUSINESS” ANNA MEE ALLERSLEV —
Anna Mee Allerslev is a Danish politician, currently serving as Mayor of Employment and Integration in Copenhagen. Today, Allerslev is giving the opening speech at the official Opening Lunch of Copenhagen Fashion Week AW17.
Why is Copenhagen Fashion Week important for Copenhagen?
ever so important that we continue to support the industry and work together to ensure that Copenhagen stays a fashion capitol.
Fashion Week is much more than just glitter, sparkles, and champagne. It is an essential part of Copenhagen both as a cultural and social event, as well as a foundation for economic growth. The fact that we every year can attract some of the most talented designers from the biggest fashion brands around the world, as well as thousands of interested visitors and investors, tells a story of what we are capable of achieving as a city, when we have the courage to have high ambitions and work together.
Copenhagen Fashion Week has been around for more than 10 years. In which direction do you think fashion week is currently moving?
The Fashion Week has developed into being both a cultural and social event. The shows and activities have spread across different areas of Copenhagen and are now involving professionals as well as habitants and tourists all together. Also I’m glad that the fashion week today has a lot of attention on the importance of sustainability. What do you look the most forward to experiencing this fashion week?
What impact does the fashion industry have for business and employment in Copenhagen and Denmark?
Most of all I’m looking forward to seeing the city filled with activity, events, and people from all over the world. There are so many talented designers present, that I think it will be unfair to single one out, but when you take a look at the programme, there is no doubt about the fact that we have an exciting week ahead of us.
The fashion industry is big business. In 2015 the national export was 26 billion kroner, and of that one third had its origin in the Copenhagen region. Every single job that the fashion industry generates contributes to the development of the city. That is why it is

Besides being named the happiest people in the world, the Danes excel in something else: Hygge – a term you absolutely cannot go without experiencing if visiting Denmark. If you’re lucky enough to have private accommodation while staying in Copenhagen, it will most likely be an implicit part of the atmosphere. But you can also find it all around the city. A more traditional kind is the living room like cafe, Mormors. It is decorated like your grandmother’s house with floral wallpaper in pastel hues, lots of candles, knitted blankets on the couches and the air is scented with the comforting smell of freshly brewed coffee and home baked goods straight from the oven. If you have half an hour to spare afterwards, walk around the corner and have a quick glance at the Danish royal palace, Amalienborg. Mormors, Bredgade 45, 1260 København K

DAILY DESIGNER NAJA MUNTHE, MUNTHE SHOW: THURSDAY 2 FEBRUARY 15.00 What is the important things to notice about the new collection?
I work a lot with faux fur which I think plays incredibly well against real fur. In part because it’s more affordable and from an ethical point of view I think it sits better with the philosophy I have at MUNTHE. In addition to this, I can play more with this material and combine many different types of fur.
What is your favourite piece from the AW17 collection?
I would say this totally wild and, in many ways, impossible multi-coloured knitted sweater. It’s a mix of haute couture and a remnant of the Woodstock Festival. I think it’s very rock’n’roll and unpretentious at the same time.
What do you look the most forward to about setting up a show?
I look the most forward to seeing the collection in an overall flow where all the thoughts and visions I have had from the beginning will be visualised in the most beautiful way.
What is the first thing you do after the show?
In a lot of ways, the hours after the show are a mix of something magical, a sense of relieve and anti-climax. All the hype and adrenaline from before the show are is gone, the lights are turned on and
NEW KIDS ON
How would you describe the collection? What kind of garments will you be presenting at the show?
I built the collection around brutalist architecture, the concrete blocks erected from cheap materials and quick construction took over the outskirts of larger cities through the ‘50s up to the mid ‘70s. I have been looking into the architectural shapes for inspiration but we are still keeping it quite lose and floating. We have focused a lot on the sleeves and asymmetrical shapes with long silhouettes that are reminiscent of the 20’s and 30’s. I have made prints that resemble the surface of concrete. Some of the prints with buildings from this period have been hand-drawn onto the clothes. I start with the prints and then I do the styles and cuts that fit the story. My dresses are minimal in design, allowing the prints to be in focus.
THE DAILY
I have always loved fashion even though I went to school for fine arts. I think I still build my collections from an art point of view. While many designers focus more on the garments, I focus on the whole concept and what the future show and presentation should look like; in this way, the show production affects the construction of the garments from the first sketch to the final runway style! But I think I’m a mix between the two. I don’t try to make art with fashion, I really try to make fashion – I just work differently with it. The drawings and the prints are what I have always done, it´s my base. I come from an art background but then I changed direction. I found the fine arts school´s to be a bit messy, you could use whatever medium you like as long as you had a good idea. Then at art school someone taught us that if you don’t know your medium, you can’t do art. That’s when I decided on my medium: fashion.
During the winter, I think they should go to Atelier September and try the avocado on rye bread or go to Fars dreng for breakfast. The bar at Hotel D’Angleterre is brilliant for a whisky sour and I would also recommend the Arndal Spa for the heating sauna aromatherapy. Who would you like to nominate for tomorrow?
Henrik Vibskov.
HENRIETTE SVALGAARD, BUYING DIRECTOR, SIRUP AND WWW.SIRUP.DK How do you prepare for a day at the trade fairs?
Who is your biggest inspiration in terms of design, Scandinavian or otherwise?
Do you consider yourself more of an artist or a fashion designer?
Copenhagen is a cornucopia of great cafés, restaurants and small, new shops. If this had been the August fashion week, I would definitely had recommended that they rented an electric boat to experience Copenhagen from the seaside, sailing through all the canals and the ramparts by Christiania and bringing champagne and bathing suits with them on the boat.
TALK
TOVE BERGGREN, BERGGREN STUDIO TEXTILE DESIGN-GRADUATE FROM KONSTFACK UNIVERSITY OF ARTS SHOW: 31 JANUARY 18.00
Chalayan has a fantastic team of drapers. I was in the sampling studio and I really liked this Japanese style of draping. I don’t do that draping at the moment but I would love to do more draping directly onto the mannequin in the future. Though this is hard to put into production, sadly.
What would you recommend the visitors of fashion week to experience while they’re in Copenhagen?
TRADE FAIR
THE BLOCK
My biggest fashion idol would be Hussein Chalayan. I served as an intern on his team at one point. He has a thought behind his collections, and I like the way they do the draping. He works like an artist; There is a thought to everything he does. When I saw his pieces, in my 20’s, I thought: if I’m going to do fashion, this is what I would like to do.
the set designs removed in a haste, and everyone quickly disappears to go the next show or appointment. Then it all turns into a lot of practicalities and logistics, evaluating the show, and then fast track back to reality.

SON OF A TAILOR
Copenhagen-based brand Son of a Tailor is the world’s first online manufacturer of t-shirts made from 100 % organic cotton. It carries no stock and has no standard sizes. Its approach to sustainability is based on the principles of LEAN. Production only starts after the order has been placed. This way it can reduce waste significantly, and still maintain a sustainable business model. Its supply chain also allows for tracking the production with full transparency, which helps ensure proper working conditions for all. The brand believes in simple and classic, high-quality design that will remain relevant through the passing of trends.
I begin preparing as ear ly as 3-4 months in advance. I start with looking at the brands in my store; what works, what doesn’t. Should I change certain brands in for something new. I spend a lot of time on this before booking appointments with my suppliers. I follow the fashion and the trends closely up to fashion week through bloggers, magazines, and social media to get a sense of the trends of the season. What does your day at the trade fairs look like?
My days are usually fully booked from morning until evening. I want to get the most out of my days at the fairs. I have a lot of meetings scheduled but I always make sure to incorporate some free time in my schedule to snoop around and discover new and exciting things. I always try to dine in at least one new place every time I visit the fairs, and it’s a must-do for me to get a few
DAILY
What do you look the most forward to experiencing this season at the fairs?
I always look forward to seeing what the brands that we retail are showing. It is paramount that the collection surprises us and, at the same time, that we can view the collection through the eyes of our customers. I look forward to the happy vibes at the fairs and taking time to talk to the brands that I work with. I also have a couple of new brands in mind that I’m excited to take a closer look at. Finally, I’m excited to have been invited to an exclusive fashion show at Hotel D’Angleterre, this will be a big experience.

Gasoline Grill’s interpretation of the classic American burger has ben ranked, by US media group Bloomberg, as one of the best in the world. MODEL HEALTH CHECK
DANISH JEWELLERY SHOWROOM GOES OVERSEAS
Leading up to Copenhagen Fashion Week, the Danish fashion industry launches the world’s first pilot project to provide health checks for all 16-year-old models in 2017.
BAUM UND PFERDGARTEN TAPS TEIS BRUUN AS NEW CEO After seven years behind the steering wheel at Baum und Pferdgarten and Six Ames, CEO Henrik Steensgaard decides to break new ground and pass on the position to the former Bruuns Bazaar executive Teis Bruun. Since Henrik Steensgaard’s appointment in 2009, Baum und Pferdgarten and Six Ames have experienced a significant growth and increased demand on all markets as well as an increased visibility in Scandinavia and globally. “Baum und Pferdgarten and Six Ames are amazing brands and a unique work place. We have been on an incredible journey together, and it is a company in a healthy development that is being passed on to new capable
management,” Henrik Steensgaard says. Since Bruuns Bazaar acquisitioned Baum und Pferdgarten, Teis Bruun has been involved in the brand’s operations in close collaboration with Henrik Steensgaard as part of the board of directors. “Right now, I feel that Baum und Pferdgarten and not least Six Ames have a strong momentum. I believe in our future and there is a big potential that I’m confident that we can realise,” Teis Bruun says. Teis Bruun assumes the position as CEO on 10 February, 2017. Story by FashionForum.dk
Since 2007, the fashion industry has worked with the national organisation against eating disorders (LMS) to launch the Danish Fashion Ethical Charter whose aim it is to ensure the wellbeing of the models and promote a healthy and natural beauty ideal. The charter was updated in 2015 with a number of rules including an age limit and requirements for salary and food backstage as well as the ambition to introduce a nation-wide health check for models. As the national health system was unable to find the capacity to and format for consistent checks, the fashion industry is now taking matters into their own hands, financing the health checks through contributions by the modelling agencies and a fee paid by the clients that commission the models. The initiators behind the health checks, including the eight most important modelling agencies, LMS, Danske Modeller and industry organisations DAFI, CFW and Dansk Fashion & Textile, hope that the health checks will identify the models who are at risk for developing eating disorders and provide the necessary support. If the pilot project is deemed successful, the initiators hope that models in more age groups can be included in the checks in the coming years.
The Jewellery Room is a fixture at Copenhagen Fashion Week, presenting the best within Scandinavian jewellery in a curated showroom. But the time has come to look beyond the Nordic Region as the showroom will be moving overseas for London Fashion Week in September 2017. “The ambition is to own the jewellery scene – not just in Denmark but also internationally,” co-founder Charlotte Møbjerg Ansel-Henry says and adds that though London is the next stop for The Jewellery Room, they also have their eyes on Paris and Germany. The Jewellery Room in London will present Scandinavian as well as international jewellery brands, curated in collaboration with the trend forecasting agency WGSN. British Fashion Council has also expressed interest in bringing the concept to London.
Like its Copenhagen counterpart, the London edition will be an intimate and curated showroom, as this is something that press and buyers greatly appreciate. However, the London edition will stay open over several days and include new strong collaborators and brands. It will also include a trend panel co-hosted by WGSN where different experts will comment on latest trends within the jewellery industry. “At every single Jewellery Room fair we have been asked if we didn’t want to expand to other fashion weeks as well – so now we’re doing it,” Charlotte Møbjerg Ansel-Henry says. The Jewellery Room is open at Copenhagen Fashion Week, Friday 3 February from 10.30. Story by FashionForum.dk

WORLD’S MOST IMPORTANT EVENT ON SUSTAINABLE FASHION GOES ANNUAL Copenhagen Fashion Summit was first held in 2009 during the UN climate conference COP15, and it has since become the world’s most influential platform for creating awareness on sustainability in fashion.

Mounting urgency around sustainability and responsible innovation and growing international interest in Copenhagen Fashion Summit has led its organizers to announce that the previously biennial Summit will now take place annually, beginning 11 May, 2017 at Copen-
hagen Concert Hall. The overarching theme of this year’s event is commitment to change with a topical focus on circular economy. “The goal is to take the Summit from being a great conference to being an actual Summit focusing on commitments from individual companies on a much broader scale. The Summit must deliver tangible outcomes, guidelines and hands-on solutions that will create positive change,” says Danish Fashion Institute co-founder and CEO Eva Kruse. 7
The Summit was one of Danish Fashion Institute’s many initiatives to raise awareness on sustainability in fashion but in early 2017, Kruse announced that Copenhagen Fashion Summit will be the flagship event of a new, year-round forum – Global Fashion Agenda. The forum aims to convene the worldwide fashion sector, governments, civil society and the great many existing initiatives around the globe to transform the way we produce and consume fashion today.
To achieve the ambitious, year-round strategy of Global Fashion Agenda, CEO Eva Kruse has up scaled her management team. Chief Operating Officer Caroline Chalmer, Chief Content Officer Jonas Eder-Hansen and Chief Learning Officer Johan Arnø-Kryger will be by Kruse’s side moving forward. The new team is ready to balance multiple initiatives including Copenhagen Fashion Summit 2017 and steer industry leaders towards concrete commitments, for a world beyond next season.

INSIDERS’ GUIDE We are delighted to welcome you to a week of fashion and proudly introduce you to our city. If you have spare time in between the many shows and events we want you to go explore all that Copenhagen has to offer. Along with our partner, Wonderful Copenhagen, we bring you the best insider tips to our city. Enjoy Copenhagen Fashion Week and the city of Copenhagen!
ANNE LOSE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF, EUROWOMAN My favourite thing to do in Copenhagen is to bring my family to one of the city’s many fantastic museums. Right now Glyptoteket and The National Gallery of Denmark are at the top of my list. Glyptoteket is an amazing treasure chest of historical art, breathtaking architecture - and their bookshop, The Museum Store, is furnished by Danish HAY and I just love to buy a book or two each time I visit the museum. The National Gallery of Denmark is right next to my home and means a lot to me - this is the place where I get to go in depth with art history. I love art and my taste spans from Eckersberg and Hammershøi to Edvard Weie and Richard Mortensen. Right now the exhibition Japanomania is an absolute must! SMK.DK | GLYPTOTEKET.DK

CEO, COPENHAGEN FASHION WEEK Copenhagen is a city with so many great spots and things to do. After careful consideration these two are my permanent top 2: I love running in Copenhagen all year round. A beautiful and varied route starts at Kgs Nytorv (close to my private home) and cross Knippelsbro to Christianshavn, along the lakeside to Islands Brygge, cross the new bridge at Aller Media House and back along the other side. It’s only around 6k, but if you have more time, it’s easy to extend. Secondly I’m addicted to the canal boats and use them all the time, all year round. Such a wonderful time off from my often very busy schedule. HAVNERUNDFART.DK

DAMERNE
Mornings in Copenhagen are my favorite. The city is still quiet, slowly waking up, and most people are on their way, while I meet up with friends or work relations for breakfast - that is the best way to start the day. One of my favorite places is Fars Dreng it’s very low-key with many regulars and nothing fancy at all, but the coffee is good and the menu - though small - includes everything from Acai bowls and avocado to homemade waffles. What’s not to like. FARSDRENG.COM

The harbour bath in the Copenhagen harbour. I love bathing in the sea, which I do all year around. It’s amazing that the water surrounding our city is so clean that you can actually bathe in it. There are several harbour baths to choose from (Islands Brygge, Svanemøllen, Sluseholmen) so there is nothing stopping you. A cold dip in the water is the best way to get the blood pumping through your body and feel alive and another bonus effect: If you’re hungover, it’s a fast cure.
Copenhagen truly has so much to offer. But since I can only recommend one thing, then let me suggest getting hold of a bike and taking a ride along our new cycling route Havneringen. The route leads you around the inner harbor, passing beautiful scenery, historic buildings, lovely cafes and also crossing many of our world renowned bicycle bridges. It’s a beautiful ride, showing the city at its best - even here in the cold months.

CECILIE BAHNSEN DESIGNER When I’m in town I always love to stop by the luxury boutique LOT29. Not only does the store have the best section of national and international menswear and womenswear design in the city, but they house it all in beautiful and unique interior surroundings. After discovering the treasures of this store, I love to relax at Atelier September across the street with a fresh juice and a magazine. LOT29.DK | CAFEATELIERSEPTEMBER.COM

As you might have noticed Copenhagen is a bike friendly city and I try to spend as much time on my bikes as possible. Commuting to and from work on my ordinary bike and racing in and around Copenhagen on my road bike. I suggest you rent a city bike and go for a ride. My favorite place to rest, relax and enjoy coffee is at Christianshavns Boat Rental and Café situated on a floating dock in the canal. A great mix of locals and tourists on their way to Freetown Christiania nearby.
DIRECTOR, SOCIAL ZOO Our go-to spot is Beau Marché, which is the ideal spot for meeting up - whether it’s for an intimate morning coffee, a business lunch or a cool glass of wine in the afternoon. And while you are there, you can also get a bit of interior design inspiration in their beautiful shop next door. If you’re in Copenhagen during fashion week and you’ve got time to spare, I can highly recommend visiting The David Collection. “I BELIEVE IN THE PERSONAL MEETING”
Camilla Frank takes stock of her first months as CEO of Copenhagen Fashion Week and her ambitions for the Danish fashion week. Words: Marlene Toldbod Jakobsen, Photo: Asger Mortensen, Translation: Frederik Højgaard
Copenhagen Fashion Week is in no way uncharted territory for Camilla Frank. During her years as editor in chief of the magazines Costume, Eurowoman, and Alt for damerne, and later as founder of the online platform Fashion-Post, she has taken part in countless fashion weeks. But it is the first time that she will be spearheading the week and carrying the responsibility for the execution, as CEO of Copenhagen Fashion Week. And Camilla Frank has no lack of ambitions for the future development and potential of the fashion week to grow bigger and stronger. Copenhagen Fashion Week is in the middle of no less than two strategic processes, and Camilla Frank is leading the battle. First on the agenda, is to take a closer look at how the brand Copenhagen Fashion Week will best develop in the future. “We have to look at why we have been put into the world. What do people want from us and which tools do we want to carry out the task. We have the highly professional consultants from Qvartz to assist us with this, just as our closest, external collaborators have a seat at the table. Even though this is CFW’s strategy, any input and recommendations are welcome” Camilla Frank says and continues: THE DAILY
“’ASAP’ has become my middle name since I started the job. We have to move quickly and launch some small boats that can grow into big steamships. In August when the SS18 fashion week takes place, everybody will hopefully have a sense of the direction we are heading in.”
“I would like us to look into the rhetoric involved with being ‘on’ or ‘off ’ in the schedule. Why would you spend a lot of money on a show if you get placed in the ‘off ’ category? Just like we need to initiate a dialogue with the brands who maybe aren’t interested in doing a show, but who could contribute something else and exciting to the programme,” Camilla Frank points out.
The other part of the strategy process is the collaboration with Social Zoo’s Pernille Teisbæk and Hannah Løffler whose digital know-how is intended to lift the SoMe communication and strengthen the digital platforms of Copenhagen Fashion Week.
One of the new initiatives that can already be experienced today is the opening event that kicks off fashion week: a lunch which, in addition to Copenhagen Fashion Week, the trade fairs and industry organisations CIFF, Revolver, DM&T and WEAR are also co-hosting. It is a mix of industry professionals who have been invited: buyers, brand CEOs, designers, local and international press, and politicians. Common ground between the different fashion week players is important, according to the CEO:
“Taken into consideration that we “only” do two events a year, I think we already have some really strong digital platforms. But we can easily do more and improve our work in this area, and by the end of February I’m expecting a plan for how to continue our digital communication to be ready.” At the moment, all initiatives are being revisited. There needs to be more visibility around the work that Copenhagen Fashion Week does, just like the existing initiatives should be re-evaluated and optimised. Take the show schedule for an example – an element, that a lot of people in the industry have an opinion about:
“It sends a strong message to the rest of the fashion world: That Copenhagen Fashion Week has a common starting point. After the lunch everyone can go do their own thing. But we all start out together.”
always been her biggest passion – and still is. One thing is to create the best fashion week for the industry and all its players. But according to Camilla Frank it is equally as important that Copenhagen Fashion Week includes everyone who, like herself, simply love fashion. As a result, Copenhagen Fashion Week has arranged three open-to-the-public events, curating a meeting between the industry and its end consumers. . It will take place Saturday, February 4th, and the target audience are people with an interest in fashion who want to meet the insiders of the industry up close, either at a lunch with designer Anne-Dorthe Larsen from Lovechild 1979, on a tour of the National Gallery with editor in chief of Eurowoman Magazine, Anne Lose, or on a guided tour through the favourite stores of Alt for damerne’s fashion director, Sille Henning “I believe in the personal meeting and I want to create a fashion week that gives people a great experience and inspires everyone to join in - with the rest of us,” Camilla Frank concludes.
