A SCANDINAVIAN DESIGN DNA? Just as I was sitting down to write this editorial note about what might define a Scandinavian Design DNA, a highly respected and skilled fashion writer stepped into the CFW office and proclaimed her dislike for the idea of “Scandinavian” fashion, a concept often discussed and sometimes heralded these days. You can imagine my despair. The writer’s argument for not using the term was simply that we should be loud and proud about our specifically Danish design heritage, a legacy her beating fashion heart would not want to share with our Nordic brothers and sisters. While I can appreciate this dedication to the Danish design scene, I do not completely agree with the restriction to a national concept. On the contrary, I do believe that such a thing as a Scandinavian Design DNA exists, and that the concept could benefit the Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish fashion markets and take us to another level together.
Abroad there is no doubt that Norway, Sweden, and Denmark are often amalgamated in the minds of the beholder to become something amorphous yet distinctive that we now know as ‘Scandi-style’: A chic yet relaxed look that takes its pride in not trying too hard. Think statement shoes with jeans and oversize knits. Or midi-skirts and sneakers. Scandinavian style means clothes that you can actually live your life in, perhaps at times with a pinch of “hygge”. While debate about what defines Scandinavian style is welcome — and probably a continuous discussion — this somewhat relaxed idea of clothing is what I believe makes it unique, and what has caused its ringing success.
Because even though there may be slight differences between the Nordic countries’ fashion aesthetics, I think we share a lot of the same views and values. This shows in the clothes.

CFW DAILY INSIGHTS & RECOMMENDATIONS DAILY Designer JANNIK WIKKELSØ DAVIDSEN, CREATIVE DIRECTOR OF HAN KJØBENHAVN SHOW: WEDNESDAY, 9TH OF AUGUST, 19:00-20:00 Han Kjøbenhavn has gone through a lot of changes this year. Will we see any of these in the new collection? There have been no changes in the creative setup, and the creative team is the same, as is the process. But of course we keep pushing our creative direction, storytelling, and expression, so the collection will definitely have new layers which will be obvious to the audience. What are some of the inspirations and influences behind the collection? It’s about neighbourhood. It’s about brotherhood. How do you prepare for fashion week – do you have a ritual? Nah, no rituals. Just trying to stay relaxed in the process, focussing on the project - and making sure we deliver what I expect of myself and the team. What does fashion week and presenting the collection at a fashion show mean to Han Kjøbenhavn? It’s important as a great opportunity to tell our story - and make the key elements in the brand work together...and hopefully culminate. You’ve got the people’s attention, so it’s the ideal stage to create something unique. What will be the first thing you do after the show? Dinner with friends and family.

– AN INSIDER’S GUIDE TO COPENHAGEN
We’ve asked Copenhagen insiders about their hidden gems and favourite places to explore while staying in the Danish capital. Today, Founders and Creative Directors at Baum und Pferdgarten Rikke Baumgarten and Helle Hestehave take you through three of their favourites.
If you’ve had enough of busy streets and noisy city life, then there’s only one place to go: Refshaleøen. It only takes 15 minutes by boat or bike, but upon arrival you quickly feel like you’ve come to a Scandinavian summer house area with all the green fields, high skies, and clear water. Start at La Banchina, an old shed and three small piers, with homemade snacks and a dip in the sea, and finish off with natural wines and a beautiful Danish sunset outside the pink shack of Naturs Vinbar. One afternoon at Refshaleøen is all you need for a little elbow room, we promise. TRADE FAIRS FOUNDER AND CREATIVE DIRECTOR OF MUNTHE, NAJA MUNTHE PRESENT AT: REVOLVER What trade fair will you and Munthe be present at? Here in Denmark, I will be exhibiting at Revolver. There are buyers from all over the world there, and we additionally have our agents in Norway, Sweden, Holland, UK, and Belgium who represent and sell in those countries. How do you prepare for a day at the trade fairs? It is of course important that everything is planned down to the smallest detail, that goes both for the collection but for the interiors and catering. Additionally, we plan our business meetings as thoroughly as possible in order to create the best experience for our customers. How does a day at the trade fairs look like for you? At the fair itself, my most important job is to be present and talk to the customers. As an owner and designer, it is easy to lose contact with what
the end consumer wants and how the market develops from a store’s point of view. At the fair, I get an invaluable dialogue and feedback from my customers, which I use in my upcoming collections. How does the trade fair impact the business of Munthe? The fair gives us an opportunity to show our collection and how we as a brand are developing. The Danish fair is starting to become more and more international, so it is also a great occasion for getting relevant contacts from abroad. What do you look most forward to experiencing this season at the trade fairs? I’m looking most forward to presenting our very strong Spring/Summer 2018 collection. We hope that our renewal will be easy to see, and that we’ve taken our design to an even higher level.
MAGASIN DU NORD FASHION PRIZE: NOMINEES REVEALED
NEWCOMERS AND RETURNEES SHOW: THURSDAY, 10TH OF AUGUST, 11:00 Q&A WITH MALKIT SINGH, HEAD OF DESIGN FOR HALO Who is behind HALO? HALO was founded by the Danish sportswear brand Newline, and by Rasmus Storm, and Malkit Singh. Newline has been in the functional sportswear business since 1981. Rasmus Storm is the owner of Storm Fashion, a well-known brand within the men´s fashion industry. Rasmus brings his knowledge from 25 years in the industry into the HALO collection. Malkit Singh has worked with sportswear for the last 12 years, and is the head of design of HALO. What is HALO? HALO is a part of the Danish sportswear brand Newline. It all started in 1981 with a man hanging in a parachute between sky and earth. He started wondering why his suit was wet and the parachute still dry. With a background from the Danish Special Forces and many years as a runner, he used the parachute to create an innovative range of functional products with a focus on detail and comfort. At the time, the Danish Army Special Forces were among the best in the world to jump from High Altitudes with Low Openings (HALO). Now, three decades later, this collection pays tribute to Newline´s founder and legacy. Inspired by the Danish Army Special Forces, HALO is taking functionality and urban style to the next level. Why do you want your brand to be a part of the show schedule at this year’s CFW? Today, functional clothing is a big part of fashion. HALO is a mix between sportswear, fashion, and functionality all inspired and built upon our background from the Danish Army Special Forces. By doing the show at CFW we can tell the story of HALO and present the collection in an inspiring way that gives full tribute to the Newline DNA. We want to get HALO out there and show the history and future of HALO Newline.

Today at Kunsthal Charlottenborg, five talented designers will be announced as this year’s nominees for the prestigious Magasin du Nord Fashion Prize, an annual accolade that helps launch an emerging design talent to new heights. Besides three nominees for womenswear labels, this year also sees two menswear contenders for the award. Only one of these five brands can win — and receive the DKK 500,000 cash prize.
DAILYGreen SHOP GREEN WITH AIAYU
It’s difficult to pronounce, but the sustainable fashion brand is nonetheless the talk of the town these days: In local news, after years of being an online shop, the doors of AIAYU’s first flagship store finally opened in Central Copenhagen, offering visitors the first-ever complete AIAYU shopping experience. Looking abroad, power woman Emma Watson just gave AIAYU (what we believe is) the brand’s coolest review so far, as she announced the brand as one of her favourites within sustainable fashion. Now we’re all waiting for Emma to show up at St. Strandstræde 12 like everyone else.
An international panel consisting of 15 experienced members will choose the ultimate winner this autumn. The members of the panel have been hand-picked to not only offer a variety of critical viewpoints on the nominees’ designs and coherence of vision, but also to provide a strong international fashion network that in addition to the prize will be an invaluable asset to the winner. The Magasin du Nord Fashion Prize is open to Danish designers who have produced at least one but no more than six collections, and helps boost the careers of designers whose great potential has not yet been fully established on the markets.
DAILY DUO:
CREATIVE PARTNERS
Managing director of Social Zoo Hannah Løffler Schmidt on her partnership with creative director Pernille Teisbæk, whom she co-founded the social-influencer and marketing company with.
CFW Daily: How did the two of you meet? Hannah Løffler Schmidt: We met through mutual friends in 2013, and clicked right away. Pernille asked if I would be her agent, which I agreed to pretty quickly. I came from a completely different background in the TV business, but I loved Pernille’s energy and thought it was be a fun new path for me. It took off from there. With Pernille’s drive and passion combined with my skillset and take on her brand and strengths, something magical happened. We agreed to focus on markets abroad, which appeared to hold a lot of potential for us. Things were moving more slowly in Denmark, both in terms of the budgets and the business opportunities for Pernille’s brand. Q: What sparked your partnership? A: Probably our chemistry. We are so alike and yet so different. We just complement each other so well, and have a lot of fun working together. Q: What are the advantages of your partnership? A: Knowing each other as well as we do and respecting each other and our differences. Also, we’re always aligned on the goals we have with the
6
projects we do and the results we wish to see. Q: Working together on Social Zoo, do you each have a specific role? How do you complement each other? A: Evolving from an agent-client-based relationship to a partnership came naturally to us. By and large we still have the same roles. Pernille is a creative genius with a unique flair for aesthetics and fashion communication, complemented by my sense for strategic development and business opportunities. Though we have different roles in Social Zoo, we still work closely together. It’s important for us to function as a single unit. Q: Has the relationship changed since you first became partners in 2013? A: Yes, after some years we had the urge to expand our partnership by creating our company, Social Zoo. We have both become mothers, and so much has happened in such a short while, prompting us to grow as people and grow closer as business partners and friends. We have since added new and amazing employees to Social Zoo, which also caused a shift for us in terms of the roles we take in relation to each other and to our employees.

MEET YOUR DAILY FASHION PERSONA:
Model Ulrikke Høyer
”WE ALL TEND TO LOOK ALIKE” WORDS: RIKKE AGNETE DAM, PHOTO: MARIYA PEPELANOVA
Having worked for international fashion houses like Chloé and Valentino, 20-year-old Ulrikke Høyer is a rising star among Danish models. But she is not just a beautiful face with a 90 % vintage wardrobe. Høyer also has strong opinions about the fashion world, and is particularly known for her protest on social media after being fired before a Louis Vuitton show for being “too fat” despite her size of 34-36. CFW DAILY: How would you describe your role on the Danish fashion scene? ULRIKKE HØYER: Since I became a full-time model a few years ago, I have mainly worked internationally. But being a model in 2017 is also about using social media, especially Instagram, to express personality and style. So in Denmark as well as internationally I have become a bit of a fashion personality. Not to claim that I am an expert at all. I have been asked at castings in New York about how many Instagram followers I have, which is a bit ridiculous because it doesn’t make you better at the job, but if the model is promoting her work on Instagram, it benefits the brand. So I have to consider the kind of style I want my
CFW DAILY
Instagram to have. When I expressed my protest about how I was treated by Louis Vuitton, it could have damaged my career... But I actually have more job options now than ever.
afraid to stand out. In New York I spot fantastic personalities with a crazy style and pink hair, and of course you shouldn’t do so if you don’t feel like it, but I wish for more bold and unique style choices. I have the same point about Danish designers. There is simply too much copying from international designers going on. When you go into an international store you will soon find almost exactly the same pieces in a Danish store. I do understand that the Danish market is small, so designers really need to think about what is selling to keep up their business, but still I wish for more creativity.
Q: What has been the most remarkable change on the Danish fashion scene since you entered it? A: From my model point-of-view, it is how my agency, 2PM, keeps developing in the way they are educating us. Twice a week there are work outsessions and they arrange boot camps at which a chef teaches us how to prepare healthy meals. This kind of support is fantastic to get as a model. Q: What is most positive about Danish fashion right now? A: Our excellent street style. Girls who look so cool in a pair of worn out jeans and sneakers. We don’t have this perfect appearance, squeezing ourselves into a tight designer dress, but are extremely good at looking chic yet comfortable.
Q: Which Danish designers do you turn to when you are shopping? A: The thing is that 90 % of the clothes I buy are vintage. I don’t go for brands. I find vintage in Paris, Milan, or in Copenhagen, where I go to Episode, Wasteland, Kbh K. to find one-of-a-kind pieces, or to I Blame Lulu for more expensive stuff. I like the idea that nothing new is produced and that I can wear the styles for years to come.
Q: What is the worst about Danish fashion right now? A: Despite our remarkable street style, we all tend to look alike. We live in a small country and are
8
Q: What was your first personal experience with Danish fashion? A: Definitely Mads Nørgaard’s classic 101-T-shirt, which my mother bought for me. Later I started purchasing them myself, and I will probably wear them for the rest of my life because of their quality, cuteness, and comfort. Q: When you look into your wardrobe, which piece of Danish Design is your favourite? A: I have a green fur from Saks Potts which I am really fond of. The two girls behind the brand are cool in the way they have managed to get huge attention abroad, where the likes of Rihanna are wearing their stuff. Q: Looking five years into the crystal ball, what is then your dream for Danish fashion? A: Definitely more sustainability. Luckily, it seems like all the new brands work with it. As inhabitants of this planet we have no other choice. Play video feature on copenhagenfashionweek.com

FURRY SUMMER
Fur? For summer? Yes, it is groundbreaking. In the extravagant setting of Hotel d’Angleterre, fashionable women and men gathered yesterday in anticipation of this week’s first show. I had nearly forgotten about the fur-based brand Anne Vest, whose asymmetrical shearling coats were part of every fashionable woman’s Christmas wishlist a few years ago — but she’s back in the best of shapes. The shearling coat remains, but as part of a much more integrated collection than earlier. Vest had decided to make a fun, cool, and daring SS18 collection with the use of a highly unusual material for the season —her trademark, fur!
was infused with midnight blue, grass green, sandy beige, and more daring shades such as delicate yellow, sky blue, and kissable lipstick red. Although a furry focus might be seen as predictable from a lux brand carrying it as a signature, the material’s use in summer garments was brave. With the collection, though, Anne Vest provided a convincing exploration of fur for use at such warmer occasions. Breaking the expected monochrome expression with splashes of bright colours, the sporty references in this collection suit the brand identity and might hopefully open the market to a younger, trendy audience — perhaps even catapulting fur into summerwear for years to come.
Humorous statement-fur details containing the Danish flag appeared alongside beach balls for earrings and bags that matched the carpet and overall beach theme. Feminine silhouettes — seen in floating dresses, ruffles, and bows — were juxtaposed with more boyish ones in ties, pullovers, tracksuits, and knickers. An earthy colour palette
CFW DAILY
Ironically, or perhaps appropriately, the furry take on summer suits the Danish weather quite well this season.

Copenhagen Fashion Week’s new event — Talent Scene — featured three selected up-and-coming brands to present their designs yesterday. Heliot Emil, created by the brothers Julius and Victor Juul using their great-great-grandfather’s name, is a mens’s brand that also offers tough, beautiful womenswear. And tough it is. Previously shown in Paris, Tokyo, Milan, New York, and Los Angeles, the collection is inspired by the posttraumatic stress suffered by soldiers back from war. This has been interpreted as a mix of military and utility clothes, where parachute strings and truck buckles, camouflage and high-tech materials are used to great effect in narrow, loose trousers and bomber jackets.
CFW DAILY
The deliberate outré clothing is a merge of PVC shining black lacquer (terrific as sexy women’s pants), silk and French leather with details like zips, stitching, and rivets going down the back of a top or used as galloons on trousers. Bands spill from waist coats or anoraks, silver chains hang loosely over trousers, while Ketamine, an anesthetic drug, is printed on a black sweater, with letters warning against the material’s risk of suffocating babies. The brothers’ love for provocation appears in the rough and strangely beautiful, absolutely dead-cool clothes. They enjoy success in the US and Japan, and may well end up as the most sensational design during CFW. There has been a lot of talk about the Scandinavian look. Heliot Emil is international, Danish design.
12
Maiken Bille and Svanhvit Sigurdardottir’s label Mai Svanhvit is inspired by Iceland’s nature and Icelandic goddesses. The two designers prefer black, white, bronze and a muted rose, “never anything brash orange or pink”, in high qualities executed in timeless, often asymmetrical cuts with a twist meant to last several seasons. Caroline Sillesen’s Corali jewellery, inspired by hidden treasures from the deep ocean, seaweed and algaes, impressed as 14-carat gold earrings as round plates and sticks ending in a pearl or dangling as gold waves with a coral.

ENRICHED WITH ENTANGLEMENTS DESIGNERS’ NEST Time: 19:00 Place: Hotel d’Angleterre Words: Jeppe Ugelvig
There are several reasons why Designers’ Nest might be the most exciting show during Copenhagen Fashion Week. The annual design competition welcomes three special talents from Scandinavia’s top design schools, chosen by a prestigious jury that includes Purple fashion magazine director Annabel Fernandes and fashion scholar Dr. Ane Lynge Jorlén.
drew on subtle fetish references from gay dark rooms, elevating them as they merged with baroque silhouettes from a bygone, more pompous past of men’s fashion. Kiilunen extended this historical emphasis with a wholehearted embrace of 19th century European mens’ attire, complete with ruff collars in heavy fabrics and gloomy colours. Incorporating recycled elements into her bold looks, it was a craftful manifestation of her men’s tailoring.
On offer this year was a diverse portfolio of projects, from craft-heavy design experiments to sleek evening-wear abstractions. Across the board, there was a distinctive departure from sportswear, which has preoccupied not only design students but the industry for the past many seasons. Focus was instead on older and more complicated dress histories, processed with a surprisingly mature couture sensibility.
Yet the grand prize of DKK 50,000 went to the halfIranian Elnaz Gargari of Oslo’s National Academy of the Arts, who presented a powerful series of bejeweled headpieces attached to heavy robes that effectively obscured both the model’s face and body. While the dazzling face-veiling trick owes more than a nod to the crystal masks of Martin Margiela, they proved their originality when contextualized as interrogating the exoticization of Middle-Eastern women through dress. Tonight, the jury succeeded in honouring three diverse graduates committed to continuously pushing the future of fashion and its entanglements with art, identity, and politics.
This was exemplified in particular by the evening’s two honourable mentions, Alecsander Rothschild and Sini-Pilvi Kiilunen, hailing from Sweden’s Beckmans College of Design and Finland’s Aalto University School of Art, respectively. Rothschild presented a hypnotic menswear collection that

DECADE OF DELIGHTS: STINE GOYA’S ANNIVERSARY COMEBACK WORDS: SOFIE RINGTVED JENSEN TRANSLATION: MAGNUS JOREM PHOTO: ASGER MORTENSEN
The Danish designer’s colourful universe has been a regular part of the Danish fashion scene for a whole decade, a feat celebrated with a comeback show on the CFW schedule today. In the last ten years, Stine Goya has taken charge of adding popular touches of pink, gold, and glitter to the Danish fashion world — touches hard to overlook on the streets and in the industry. Yet despite Goya’s sustained success, the brand has not been on the CFW show schedule since 2014 — until today. This afternoon, Stine Goya is returning to Copenhagen Fashion Week, not only to mark the ten-year anniversary, but also because the timing is just right for the company: “In the past few years of passing on the shows, we have developed our business — and that has paid off. We now have a stronger foundation. To put on a show now gives us the opportunity to further develop the brand internationally from this foundation and use our energy on important boutiques and buyers from abroad”, says Goya, continuing: “We see this season’s show as a good, natural step in our process, and of course it also marks the tenyear occasion.” SHOW FIRST — FAIR LATER Although Goya has been absent from the show schedule, she has still used Copenhagen Fashion Week as an active part of the label’s branding strategy. In particular, the trade fairs have been important: “Fashion week has played an important role, but in different ways at different stages in the development of the business. The show part was very important in the first few years, while we have focussed more on the fairs later on in the past few years”, says the designer. “I sense that it is still crucial to develop fashion week and find out what CFW should stand for and offer, in order to maximise relevance for all participants. I hope and believe that lots of great people are working on that intensely”, she continues. Goya hopes the comeback show will be remembered as both beautiful and a bit different — but won’t go into further detail so as not to spoil the surprise. “We want to create a mood and an experience for the onlookers so that they leave feeling inspired and elevated. That’s all I’m saying at the moment”, she says. THE STINE GOYA SHOW TAKES PLACE TODAY AT 17:00 AT FAURSCHOU FOUNDATION IN NORDHAVN, IN THE ØSTERBRO DISTRICT OF COPENHAGEN.

DM&T BUSINESS LOUNGE AT THE TRADE FAIRS This season, Copenhagen Fashion Week and the trade association Danish Fashion & Textile (DM&T) welcome their members as well press two two separate business lounges at the trade fairs Revolver and CIFF. Here, members of DM&T can meet the representatives of the association, who will be of assistance during the week. The lounges are the perfect place to meet potential clients and new business partners, but it is also a place for taking a well-deserved break from the hectic fairs. Both of the lounges will be open in the trade fairs opening hours from August 9-11. At Revolver, the business lounge is placed next to the main entrance, while the one at CIFF is located at B3-212. The lounges are open to press, members of DM&T’s and guests of Copenhagen Fashion Week. Sign up at business@copenhagenfashionweek.com.
