The official programme of Copenhagen Fashion Festival

Welcome

2

Welcome to a fresh new season of Copenhagen Fashion Festival. We are very excited to present you with this season's amazing programme and invite you to experience an array of events in Copenhagen’s shops, streets and cultural organisations. Go winter shopping, get a makeover, get make-up tips and much more. Take the shopping route through Copenhagen and get a free, personal hair styling by the professional TRESemmé stylists at the Blow-Out Bar at both Nytorv and Field’s before visiting the design exhibitions at Designmuseum Danmark and The National Museum for guided tours and workshops. This season we are proud to introduce brand new festival events. Join us at Design Society at H.C. Andersens Boulevard 27. The festival takes over the entire ground floor and creates a festival centre complete with Fashion Cinema Nights with DRK, Fashion Talks with prominent profiles from the Danish fashion industry, fashion short films and two international design exhibitions. Drop by the café and lounge where you can relax and enjoy a coffee or a fashion drink. Remember always to stay updated with the CPHFW app, on Facebook and on copenhagenfashionfestival.com.

Christiane Schaumburg Müller O’Conner Editor-In-Chief at ChriChri, actress, TV host How would you describe the life of Christiane Schaumburg-Müller O’Connor? Work, work, work. My life’s work is my job. My passion is my job. I myself choose to work 60-65 hours per week because my job is what drives me. I meet a lot of people and I am very social because of my job. You are active on various social media platforms and have a lot of followers. Besides you, who should everyone be following right now? @thecoveteur @kaftanusman @chrichridk @jamieoliver @royfares @giambattistapr What motivates you in life? Creating something. To take the future in my own hands – that motivates me!

What makes Copenhagen special in your opinion? What does it have to offer? You cannot get food anywhere after 10 pm and neon lights do not light up the streets. We are a village in a metropolis, which I find very charming. Copenhagen is a city that keeps developing. Personally, I love Copenhagen and I could never move away permanently. Copenhagen is manageable - it is a city open to all. What would be a perfect day for you in Copenhagen? The perfect day would be to meet at work early in the morning before the city awakes. Get to the bottom of my ”to do” list and afterwards have a good creative meeting where I can tell my manager about all my crazy ideas. This meeting might be held at Bistro Boheme. Afterwards I would check my emails and answer most of them so they are dealt with. Then I would go take a dip in the winter bathing club and afterwards sit in a sauna. The evening would end with a drink at Nimb or Balthazar and then a dinner accompanied by my husband. Any new projects coming up? ChriChri.dk takes the most of my time but I have a lot of new ground breaking projects coming up!

January 28 Wed 18.30 The festival is opened with the documentary In Vogue: The Editor’s Eye, which takes you behind the scenes of the world’s most famous fashion magazine. Join us for a fantastic movie night with refreshments and goodie bags. In Vogue: The Editor’s Eye, coinciding with the 120th anniversary of Vogue, takes a look at some of the world’s most influential fashion images as conceived by the magazine’s iconic fashion editors. “The people who are responsible for the fashion images are the fashion editors,” says Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of Vogue. “They have always been our secret weapon, so it seemed to me that we could celebrate Vogue, and also, at the same time, celebrate these great editors.” Drawing on Vogue’s exceptional

archives, the film features behind-thescenes interviews with editors who have contributed to the magazine’s legacy, including current editor-in-chief Anna Wintour; fashion editors such as Grace Coddington, Tonne Goodman, Polly Allen Mellen, Carlyne Cerf de Dudzeele, Camilla Nickerson, Phyllis Posnick and Babs Simpson; celebrated Vogue subjects Nicole Kidman and Sarah Jessica Parker; industry icons such as Hamish Bowles; and fashion designers Alber Elbaz, Nicolas Ghesquière, Marc Jacobs and Vera Wang (herself a former Vogue fashion editor), all of whom share their experiences collaborating with top photographers and image-makers of the day. In Vogue: The Editor’s Eye is produced and directed by Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato.

Copenhagen Fashion Film Festival runs from January 31 – February 15, 2015 with showings at the Cinematheque and at selected sites in Copenhagen. Prior to the film festival they will set up in Design Society and celebrate Copenhagen Fashion Festival with a pop-up cinema that shows brand new fashion short films. View the full program on copenhagenfashionfilm.dk and copenhagenfashionfestival.com

Bearing this year’s theme, ‘The Importance Of Being A Heroine’, in mind Copenhagen Fashion Film has combined a strong programme with brand new fashion films. The programme offers films selected based on two overall themes; films with a clear narrative structure and films with an overall artistic expression.

Fashion is the focus of the films’ stories, which builds a universe around a designer, a brand or both. Fashion as a visual narrative is the object of the story. However, elements such as atmosphere, feelings, a piece of clothing or understanding a designer are also in focus.

Films shown during the pop-up cinema include films by Adam Jordowsky, Fred Lebain, Nikoline Liv Andersen, Kenji Hirano, Eclectic Magazine and many more. Furthermore, there will be an exclusive world premiere of the film “CPNHGN FSHN WK” by director Thomas Yong on the last day of Copenhagen Fashion Festival.

Copenhagen Fashion Film highlights the obvious connection between fashion and film and shows that the two have developed together through time. The festival shows everything from silent films, iconic underground films to completely new fashion films. These films span from PR to art or pure entertainment.

The EcoChic Design Award 2014/15 Exhibition January 28 - February 1 Wed-Sun 10-18 Fresh off the runway from January’s Hong Kong Fashion Week (Asia’s largest fashion event), sustainable fashion NGO Redress presents their exhibition featuring an impressive selection of sustainable fashion garments created by Asia’s and Europe’s emerging fashion design talent. This cutting edge exhibition features 10 striking sustainable garments created by the finalist designers who recently competed in the sustainable fashion design competition, The EcoChic Design Award 2014/15. This much-celebrated competition is tearing through studios, sketchbooks and countries as it injects a passion for sustainable design into emerging designers’ DNA. It is sponsored by Create Hong Kong of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and Copenhagen Fashion Festival is the exhibition’s first stop on its European tour. The 10 designers, representing Hong Kong, Mainland China, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, UK, France, Sweden and Denmark, have each contributed with one sustainable garment for the exhibition. These garments have been made using the sustainable design techniques of zero-waste, up-cycling and reconstruction in their effort to cut

waste out of fashion. The designers have previously out-designed hundreds of other hopefuls in Redress’ biggest haul of applicants since The EcoChic Design Award launched in Hong Kong in 2011. This exhibition provides a compelling and courageous snapshot into the future of fashion. NICE and Copenhagen Fashion Festival put focus on shopping habits and men’s fashion with an exhibition, a Friday bar and a fashion talk. Explore the new trends and learn how to get a wardrobe with great designs that have exciting and inspiring stories behind them.

New Nordic Fashion – The Good Guys Exhibition

Nordic fashion shares a unique design heritage and a strong tradition of craftsmanship. This exhibition shows how men’s fashion is cool and modern. Masculinity and traditional design values are on display in the exhibition, which tells the story of male identity and how timeless styles can be worn over and over. On display is for example the Danish Foreign Minister Martin Lidegaard’s white tie outfit by David Andersen, which is made from organic materials and with zero waste principles. There is a sense of experimentation in menswear at the moment. Young designers are embracing traditional roots, new textures and materials. Conceptual takes on Nordic garments such as Barbara í Gongini, Boas Kristjanson and JÖR by Guðmunder Jörundsson, are all displayed at the exhibition. Furthermore, the exhibition gathers leading Nordic designers like Mads Nørgaard, Amoire d’homme, Nudie Jeans, Filippa K, H&M, and Sort Slips Hvidt Slips who either focus on local production, tailored fits, old school cuts or craftsmanship. You can buy clothes from these brands on the high street. The exhibition is a chance to discover the uniqueness of fashion in a male universe.

Get Inspired by Mads Nørgaard and Wardrobe Expert Else Skjold January 30 Fri 17-18.30 What are the trends in men’s fashion? What determines men’s choice of clothes? And is men’s fashion consumption more sustainable than women’s? These are some of the questions that Friday night’s talk at Design Society will shed light on. Grab a beer and listen to a discussion about men’s fashion with designer Mads Nørgaard and wardrobe expert Else Skjold. The talk is in Danish.

Fashion Goes Green

Sustainability is about more than what product you buy. You can invest in the most sustainable t-shirt but if you only use it once it might be better to choose a less sustainable style that you wear until it's worn out. By following these few simple rules you can help make the fashion industry more sustainable, while also getting a more stylish wardrobe filled with interesting stories and good design. This is ultimately what creates a nice wardrobe. Buy Good Design Sustainability is to a high degree about using our clothes for a longer period of time. British research shows that, in recent years, we have only used 1/3 of our clothes, which means that most of the clothes we buy goes unused. Therefore, it could in the long run pay off to invest in good design and something that you can see yourself wearing for a long time. So go buy your dream dress and stop impulse shopping! Care for Your Clothes A big part of the environmental and climate impact lies in the consumption phase, which is when you wash, iron and send your clothes to the dry cleaner. The way we care for our clothes not only

damages the environment but also the clothes. Most of our clothes are better off getting washed at 30 rather than 40 degrees. It is best if wool is aired and not washed, a dress is worn out if dry cleaned and shirts are much easier to iron if hung in the bathroom while showering. Take these things into consideration when washing and your designer clothes will last longer! Swap for Something New The fact that we do not use all our clothes is not that it is worn out but rather that for example the fit or colour is not quite right. However, these specific items might fit a friend, or a stranger, perfectly and they might just have something that fits you perfectly. Swap clothes with friends, explore second hand shops or go to one of the platforms online. In this way you will not only save money compared to buying new clothes but you will also spare the environment by producing less new clothes. Be sure to also check out The Green Walk – our guide to where it is best to shop sustainable fashion, which gives you an overview of the best shops carrying sustainable fashion products.

copenhagenfashionfestival.com

Sustainable clothing does not have to be boring and it is a lot easier to get a green wardrobe today compared to in the 90’s.

Kirsten Brosbøl Minister of the Environment What is the branding value of “green” fashion for Denmark? The fashion industry is important for Danish export and employment. With its considerable environmental impacts, it’s important to me that the industry focuses on sustainability. I’d like to see the Danish fashion industry have a strong reputation for social responsibility and I believe that sustainability is an important element for maintaining a strong competitive position globally. Therefore, I’m very pleased that the industry cares about sustainability and has designers who integrate it into their designs. It’s crucial that we, as politicians, support the many stakeholders in the industry who want to be sustainable. We’ve launched several projects that will make the industry more sustainable, which include projects on phasing out harmful chemicals, developing eco-technology solutions as well as reusing and recycling clothing. Washing and tumble-drying account for 36% of CO2 emissions from the fashion industry; what are some tips you have for reducing that climate impact? You can save energy by stop washing your clothes at higher temperatures than necessary. Today, you can buy eco-labeled detergents developed to clean your clothes at lower temperatures. I make sure to fill up my machine and dry most of my clothes outside. I believe that small changes make a difference. What shopping destinations would you recommend for sustainable design? There are shops that function as clothing libraries and rent out clothes, which benefits the environment as the clothes get a longer life span. Personally, I borrow clothes from the Chare clothing library. The industry has also developed its own “Green Walk” guidelines that help shoppers locate where to buy fashion, which has incorporated environmental considerations into its production. Do you have any tips for building a sustainable wardrobe? Think about what you buy and go through your wardrobe once in a while. Buy high-quality designer clothes that will last for many years. I often buy second-hand clothes and always go for good materials and high quality.

Melissa Bech Fashion Editor at Cover You’re on a fast track, being only 26 and already in a position as Fashion Director, have you always been passionate about fashion? Yes. Growing up in Detroit, Michigan and attending a private school, where we had to wear a uniform – I remember trying to make small changes, such as customizing the shirt with pins, adjusting the length of the skirt, and tearing the rim of the top, in order to personalize it. It was really the beginning of my own path into personal style. What is your favourite part of being Fashion Director at COVER? The best part of the job is definitely the creative process. I learn so much from working with talented people in the business, which is truly inspiring. What is the hardest part about your job? I always have my eyes and ears open so the line between work and time-off is blurred. Personally, I wouldn’t want it any other way – it’s a big part of who I am. Do you have any tips for someone who wants to break into the industry? I would say that you have to be willing to put in all the legwork. Few people know exactly what they want to do when they start out. My experience is that the best way of finding out is trying various internships to figure out what part of the industry suits you and then work towards that. Where do you like to shop, eat and go out in Copenhagen? I work in Copenhagen K (the centre of the city), where I probably do most of my shopping. Stores like: Holly Golightly, Wood Wood, Lot#29, Lubarol, Storm and Gubi are definitely worth checking out. There are a lot of good places to eat in Copenhagen – some of my favourites are: Osteria 16, Pluto, Condesa, Oysters & Grill and Fiskebaren. I live in Nørrebro and for drinks nearby I like to go to Vinhanen and Harbo Bar.

Anne-Louise Sommer Museum Director at Designmuseum Danmark Can you tell us a bit about your current exhibition at Designmuseum Danmark? Visitors will be met by a wide selection of garments, fashion, textiles, embroidery, shoes and accessories from the last 400 years. This includes both national and international objects, all from our very own unique collection. It is a spectacular display of beautiful materials, exciting techniques and wonderful colours - a journey through time and space, from weekdays to parties. A cross section of the lived life of the past 400 years, viewed through the lens of fashion. What is the vision behind the exhibition and how do you intend to integrate it into the other activities at the museum? We want to increase the understanding of fashion and textile design as being an important part of Danish design. The way we dress reflects our time and as the saying goes “clothes make a man”. Therefore, you can learn about time, society and culture broadly, if you understand why we dress as we do, which is relevant both from a historical and contemporary perspective. Today, fashion is Denmark’s fourth largest export sector and Denmark is strikingly manifesting itself on the international fashion scene. With the exhibition we wish to create insight into this field – both for the public and the industry itself. How are Danish fashion and Danish furniture related, in your opinion? I think I will put it this way: Both are marked by great, simple quality with a democratic touch. And it is often objects that are unpretentious in a liberating way. Moreover, you could say that the products are designed from the user’s point of view. Focus is on the person who will use the chair or wear the clothes. What piece of Danish design is a personal favourite of yours? This is an impossible question to answer. Imagine naming one favourite when you love design as much as I do! I could mention everything from Kaj Bojesen’s wonderful sea parrot to the classic PH lamp or from the Margrethe bowl to Grete Jalk’s innovative shell chair from the 1950s. However, when talking about fashion and textile it almost has to be Nørgaard paa Strøget’s t-shirt 101 from 1967. It comes in various colour combinations and has become a modern classic worn by trendy women of all ages at every kind of occasion. It is fashionable, simple, good quality and dependable in any regard.

Family Workshop about Fashion Sketches How do fashion designers work with sketches and design processes? At this workshop you can experiment with creating your own fashion illustrations on paper. You will also get the chance to look closer into how fashion designers work during the design process and with sketching. First we will find inspiration in the exhibition Fashion & Fabric and then we will go to the design workshop facility where you can sample different eras and fashion pictures and thereby create a whole new expression. What happens when you e.g. take elements

from a 17th century dress and mix it with something contemporary? Your imagination is your only limitation. Different materials are accessible at the workshop e.g. textiles, feathers, denim, pearls, buttons, textile markers, clippings and much more. Meeting place is at the design workshop facility at Designmuseum Danmark and the price is 20 DKK per person incl. materials (normally 100 DKK). Registration via designmuseum.dk

Mads Axelsen Radio Presenter, DJ, Blogger Congratulations on being ”The best dressed man in Denmark” according to Euroman! Why do you think they chose you? I was really surprised when I found out that I was number 1. I’m sure that the way I dress isn’t for everyone, but I don’t care, and I just look as I’d like to look - I think that is one of the reasons why Euroman noticed me. I’m not afraid to push boundaries. Do you think that Danes dress well or would you change anything? I definitely think that Danes dress well, yes. We have a certain kind of coolness to our everydaywear, which I think most nationalities envy. Danes rarely try too hard and we make an effort to look effortless. And I really like that! What is the most important item in every Photo: Rasmus Weng Karlsen man’s wardrobe? I think every man should have a great suit in his closet. This is where it’s really important not to be stingy with your money - buy a great, lightweight wool suit that fits your body perfectly and take your time and go to the tailor to have adjustments made if it’s not quite right. How do you stand out from the crowd? I've spent a lot of time (and years!) trying to define my own style and taste, just to realize that the only expectations I had to fulfil were my own. This has given me a great sense of independence in the way that I dress. I go with my gut and I'm not afraid to take chances. Who could Danes take style cues from? Personally, I've always been fascinated with the Parisian look. It's so simple and timeless and it’s so obvious that quality is more important than quantity for most fashion people in Paris. What’s your favourite drink and ultimate party music? Anything that contains champagne really. At the moment I really like a Mimosas.

Behind the Cover Shoot

Go behind the scenes of this season’s Copenhagen Fashion Festival cover photo shoot. Beautiful Veneda Budny from 2pm Model Management shines on the programme cover, which was shot by fashion photographer Sascha Oda. TRESemmé hairstylist Lasse Pedersen gave Veneda a perfectly undone look, stylist Maiken Winther chose an understated but stylish look and makeup artist Trine Skjøth worked her make-up magic on Veneda.

Veneda Budny, Model at 2pm Model Management How do you prepare for a photo shoot? I make sure to get enough sleep and to relax. Often, before I go to the shoot, I like to go for a short run. Especially when I travel a lot and am jet-lagged since I have a tendency to then wake up early. What’s your favourite outfit? I think that would be a pair of jeans and a white t-shirt. Very, very simple but I feel comfortable in it and it looks good on me.

It’s important to me that I feel comfortable in my clothes. What do you Instagram the most at the moment? That would be a mix of photos of myself and my travels. I go to new places all the time and take photos of things I see or a moment that I catch. I like taking photos and I like sharing what I see with my followers.

Behind the Cover Shoot

Lasse Pedersen, Hair Stylist Tell us about Veneda’s look We went for something very natural, good-looking. You could actually call it the same as the name for the new TRESemmé line: perfectly undone. It’s something that really is done but doesn’t look ’done’ – if you could put it like that. It’s a great new product.

Which hair trends should you follow this winter? I hope more girls would dare have more of their hair cut off. Not a boyish cut but just losing some of the length. Personally, I think this could become a trend. Especially in Copenhagen, which is not the biggest city around, people have a tendency to be afraid of standing out. I hope more girls will have the courage to lose some length.

What’s your best hair styling tip? I think my best tip would be that you should take good care of your hair. You should have a proper shampoo, a good conditioner and a proper hair repair. If you have those things, then you are treating your hair the right way. Short or long? I love long hair and I love working with long hair because there are more options for me as a hair stylist in the long rather than the short. But at the moment I feel like it’s a part of the zeitgeist with these mid-length styles: bobs, a mid-length layered style. Not necessarily a super short boy cut, that’s not what I’m talking about, but a mid-length. I think that’s awesome, at the moment. What’s your favourite hair product? I say this every time but my favourite product is Instant Refresh Dry Shampoo by TRESemmé. There is no better dry shampoo on the market than this one. It’s as simple as that.

Which products did you use when styling? I sprayed this ’Perfectly Undone Seasalt Spray’ in the hair before blow-drying it. Then I blow-dried it loosely with my hands and then I used a straightening iron on the hair to create a bit of movement. To make it look not too curly or too ’done’ but just to create an organic, luscious look. After that I used the TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Oil, to make sure the tips of the hair came together. It’s important for Veneda’s style that the hair does not come off as stiff. That’s why you could call it ’perfectly undone’.
