plicity of Denmark. In the case of designer Leyla Piedayesh, the reason for choosing Copenhagen over her native über trendy Berlin for last night’s show, by the landmark Elephant Gates at Carlsberg, is not only her focus on the Scandinavian market, but also her relation to the city with personal friends, and the inspiration she gets from the cool, international girls she watches on the street scene.
Editor-in-chief
By gathering the resources in one place, instead of a few fashion shows in Stockholm and the non-existent trade fairs in Oslo and Helsinki, the joined forces would make everyone winners in the battle for international attention, as Copenhagen has the attention of fashion insiders. Especially now when Business of Fashion for the first time, and Vogue.com for the second time, has decided to include Copenhagen Fashion Week as part of its SS17 fashion coverage on their coveted digital pages.
Previously Ann-Sofie Back and Carin Wester from Sweden have shown in Copenhagen, as have Marimekko and 2OR+BYYAT from Finland, and Vice President and Development
Tomorrrow’s press event, The Jewellery Room, has grown from a platform for promoting Danish fashion jewelers into a bigger Scandinavian showcase, because the talent and the common denominator of the design language is there, and it is a prime example of standing stronger by bringing the fashion forces together.

Nordic or not, Lala Berlin fits right into the idea of uniting the best brands from the region with Copenhagen as the natural epicentre of Northern fashion. And with promotions from Norwegian and Finnish fashion and cultural delegations, and today’s two Swedish brands, House of Dagmar and Uniforms For The Dedicated, in prominent time slots on the show schedule, Copenhagen Fashion Week is gaining momentum.
Director, Anne Christine Persson, has long seen the potential of Copenhagen Fashion Week growing into a permanent Scandinavian fashion destination.

Jewellery export What started as a platform for promoting Danish jewellery design as fashionable accessories three years ago in a natural extension of the catwalk and trade events during Copenhagen Fashion Week, has spiralled The Jewellery Room into an international phenomenon. No other fashion week provides the same media service, with a curated event of 25 high profile exhibitors with such diverse style, and the success has sisters Pernille Møbjerg Knudsen and Charlotte Ansel-Henry, who are the initiators behind The Jewellery Room, branching out from next year during London Fashion Week. Before this happens, they invite a British designer to be among the chosen few on Friday’s event, and to top it off, the inauguration speech will be held by Sophie Louise Kerr, the jewellery buyer from influential British online

retailer Net-A-Porter. - As a British designer, being part of The Jewellery Room is an incredible way for me to expand into the international market. Copenhagen is renowned for its sleek and stylish jewellery, making it the perfect location to showcase my collections that echo this sophisticated style. The Jewellery Room is the go-to platform for what is hot now, so I am honoured to be a part of it, says Sammie Jo Coxon, the first participant outside Scandinavia.
As this season’s fashion week kicks off, both trade fairs, CIFF and Revolver, and all three industry organisations, Wear, DM&T, and DAFI, are pleased to present the dates for the coming three seasons of Copenhagen Fashion Week. The focus for setting the dates has been to gather all fashion week activities on the same weekdays - Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, based on the positive experience from the previous seasons that proved these dates to allow for the best attraction of the relevant Scandinavian and international buyers and members of press.
It is the growing number of international editors and journalists attending the Copenhagen event that has sparked the idea to export the concept of bridging trendy jewellery and fashion to other leading cities such as Paris and New York in the future. Until then, the Copenhagen event still remains unique and sought after with its unmistakably Scandinavian style and flair.

Zalando repeats success European online retailer Zalando had such a huge success with their consumer fashion show at City Hall last season that they will not only repeat, but also live stream it at the outside square tonight for those, who are not able to get hold of a ticket to one of the 700 seats. On top of that, they will export the
concept to their other important markets. - The city already has a very consumer oriented focus with Copenhagen Fashion Festival. This gives us an opportunity to meet a large group of fashion conscious Danes and give them a show experience, which is normally reserved for industry people, says Kenneth Melchior, country manager of Zalando Denmark, adding: - Our collaboration with Copenhagen Fashion Week is a good partnership, because they provide the perfect platform to interact with our consumers. So with the success of showing fashions from the actual season in Copenhagen, Zalando will follow suit in other countries as well; Stockholm in late august and during Bread & Butter by Zalando in Berlin in early September.
He sees the change in consumer habits to online shopping and consumer focused catwalk shows as part of a natural evolution. - It becomes more and more out-dated, that the consumers have to wait to buy what they see on the catwalk. So it is a natural consequence to follow the demands and desires of the consumers, he says, and refers to the ongoing international debate from recent fashion weeks in Paris, London, New York and Milan of the ‘see now-buy now’ phenomenon, says Kenneth Melchior. Zalando operates in 15 European markets with 160 million visitors every month, offering them 1.500 international fashion brands to choose from.

It is all connected, and to us it is important to be responsible in the footprints we leave behind.
From day one our goal has been to be as sustainable as possible, and it is a process we work with every day. We choose only natural materials such as linen and organic GOTS certified cotton, and our clothes are produced in certified factories with high standards for work and environment. We seek to develop a production in Denmark to support local producers and save the journey. We refrain from leather and fur for ethical and environmental reasons, and focus on ‘less is more’ by creating
classic, timeless collections with a longevity in both quality and style. It has proved to be a good marketing tool for our brand, but most importantly it has enabled us to inspire and guide our clients to choose sustainability by showing that going green does not equal boring. We love fashion, but we also have something to say. And coming from the rural northern part of Denmark, we know it pays off to make an effort and stand up for it. “

The Midas Fur Touch SAKS POTTS Time: 17.00 Place: The Lab Words: Lotte Freddie
The follow up on a great success, the second show, is always the most difficult. Not for Cathrine Saks and Barbara Potts who floored everyone with more of their simply fabulous Saks Potts furs. How can it be that two young women without any professional fashion training can come up with such a sophisticated, international design expression? Their collection, “Farmer Life with a Modern Twist”, is twisted indeed. Beautifully. – Classics added the Saks Potts twists: A pale blue and white Bardot checked cotton dress is boat cut across the shoulders to small puffed sleeves tied with narrow, checked bows – the same bows tying a checked maize coat with wide, blue mink cuffs. Classic coats get wide purple, lilac or sky blue mink or fox cuffs. Sky blue or lavender fox or Tibetan lamb edges same colour shaved lamb jackets. - Lined with yellow and red poppy patterned silks, or beautiful yellow sunflowers on sky blue. The materials also shine as midi skirts and blouses and lines a wonderful sky blue mink jacket inset mink sunflowers. The exemplary collaboration with Kopenhagen Fur excels with a fantastic Tibetan lamb coat – half chocolate brown half mushroom. The collection which is added a more sexy feel is the result of “just making what we think is cool” and being ”just happy if other people like it”. They obviously do in Europe Kuwait, Dubai, Asia. Next up is New York where The Consulate General of Denmark hosts a Saks Potts presentation. Watch out America, the fur girls are coming.

Three Times Art TATIANA ANDERSEN CAMRE Time: 11.00 Place: Thorvaldsens Museum, inner courtyard Words: Lotte Freddie Copenhagen Fashion Week opened as a beautiful artistic manifestation. At the sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen’s Museum ballet dancers from the Royal Danish Ballet performed ”The Nine Muses”, a danced story of Tatiana Andersen Camre’s SS17 collection. Is fashion art – the question is often asked and the answer is: it can be. Like here, where Andersen Camre’s research of Renaissance and Golden Age painters, Botticelli, Fra Angelico, the frescoes in Thorvaldsen’s Museum, the mirrors and ancient Persian ceramics in The David’s Collection Museum and the early Ballet Rousses costumes has all resulted in marvellous prints and fabulous colours. The Danish Royal Theatre has inspired to the warm hues of the curtain now enveloping women of all ages, and the nine muses painted in1874 on the theatre’s ceiling come to life here as prints on flowing dresses. And it works; both the intellectual patterns and Tatiana Andersen Camre’s wondrous flower mixes that will charm and flatter anyone – in the show bejewelled by Olga Bonne. The shapes of the clothes are totally simple. Kimonos, A-line and empire dresses, trousers and blouses are executed in quite plain cuts. It is the exceptional artwork that will enhance the wearer of these interesting and unusual silky dreams. A former ballet dancer herself, the artist’s dresses and the Royal dancer’s gracious performance around his grave paid tribute to Thorvaldsen - who died in The Royal Theatre. And thus a synthesis of fashion meets art was created as well as a promising launch of Copenhagen Fashion Week.

Sombre Mirage FONNESBECH
Time: 15.00 Place: Fonnesbech Building Words: Jeppe Ugelvig
As fashion week boss Eva Kruse proclaimed yesterday in these very pages, eco-fashion’s biggest challenge is to transcend that very notion. Increasingly, customers are showing an interest in the ethics of clothes – but at the end of the day, only if it doesn’t compromise good design. In this regard, Fonnesbech is far beyond eco-basic. Unbothered by Copenhagen’s torrential rains, they invited viewers (including a smiling crown princess) into a luxurious desert mirage for their SS17 presentation, inspired by the sun-bleached visuality of the Saharan desert. Exquisite power-suits, borrowed from menswear tailoring traditions, bled smoothly into feminine safari-like jackets and shorts in hues of olive green, while high-heeled PVC slip-ins and a show-stopping skiing jacket in scarlet red added some urban transgression to an otherwise unhazardous collection. Organic wool crepe and innovative Newlife™ textiles (made of renewable fibres and recycled materials) performed faultlessly as contemporary luxury. Fonnesbech is, self-proclaimed, directed towards the modern businesswoman – “who needs to be flexible and well dressed for every occasion.” But in the comfortably fitted, sombrely colour-coded, and über-accessible, their take on professional chic borders towards the dull. Their moments of risk-taking, such as the chunky straps evenly distributed throughout the collection, were more than successful. For the future, more of this would certainly be encouraged.

Pitch perfect FREYA DALSJØ Time: 16:00 Place: Børsen Words: Courtney Forrest
As guests entered Børsen, VIP’s including Pernille Teisbaek were escorted into a separate plastic-wrapped room to await one of the most eagerly anticipated shows of fashion week. At a preview, Dalsjø cited Sci-fi and 90’s heroines as inspiration, as well as her own friends who would make up the cast. The starting point was to create the “perfect” pant, shirt, dress; then apply her signature tailoring and bold use of color and material combinations to make them Dalsjø. Pinstripes and patchwork, parachute, cotton and silk in a soft palette of brown, green, blue and white were mixed together in a way only she can make look effortless and cool. The result was her most well-rounded collection to date. The standout hybrid motorcross/ski pant with anatomically placed patchwork and matching bomber jacket is the Dalsjø girl personified. Sharply tailored separates created optical illusions – shorts that read as skirts, single shirtings that appeared layered. Black and acid yellow patent boots added the final touch of attitude – not that these girls needed any help in that department. The only misstep was an embroidered jumpsuit, Dalsjø’s first completely hand-sewn piece. One must applaud her for pushing the limits of her craft, but it seemed out of place here. As Rihanna’s “Work” played for the finale, the Daljsø tribe danced with all the confidence, exuberance and energy of their fearless leader. Freya Dalsjø is Danish fashion’s brightest rising star. It’s only a matter of time before the rest of the world takes notice.

Queen of camp NICHOLAS NYBRO Time: 14.00 Place: Regnbuepladsen 3-5 Words: Courtney Forrest
Last season, some show-goers expressed concern that Nicholas Nybro played it too safe. Well, they needn’t worry - Spring/Summer 2017 swung the pendulum completely in the opposite direction. A Nybro show starts outside the venue - the people-watching is a spectacle unto itself. Once inside, guests made their way to banquette seats in the dimly lit, basement lounge of Steak Royal. A closer look around the room revealed the cast of characters who would make up the performance. Because make no mistake, this was a Performance with a capital “P”. The campy extravaganza entitled “More Than a Number”, was according to the show notes Nybro’s “comment on both an industry and a time, where everything is moving too fast and there’s an unhealthy focus on youth.” The casting was spectacular – including drag queens, a well-known-to-the-Danes actress or two (Stine Stengade and Ghita Nørby) – all of an advanced age. It was very “Think Pink!” - barmaids in 50’s, tiered house coats; a couple in matching plush tracksuits; ruffles and bows and pearls, oh my! Glittery gold “Boca Raton” leisure sweatsuits and chunky “granny” jewelry added even more pizazz. But, let’s be honest, this wasn’t about the clothes. Yes, there were glimpses of wearable pieces and the gowns were fantastical statement-makers. But, one has to wonder if Nybro cares about growing his commercial business, or would prefer to remain the insider brand his existing clientele so rabidly support. That said, it would be a shame to deny the rest of the world his sparkle.

Elephants in the jungle LALA BERLIN Time: 20.00 Place: Ny Carlsberg Words: Lotte Freddie
27 years ago Leyla Piedayesh arrived in Germany with her parents from Iran. Today she is known as the founder of Lala Berlin – thought of as Germany’s trendy brand. She is staging her third show in Copenhagen showing her SS17 collection at the old Carlsberg brewery area, the first time a fashion show is taking place here, where the majestic famous elephant sculptures impressively guard the old brewery buildings. They are now the centre of a new and exiting part of Copenhagen, a city within a city- “More Copenhagen to Copenhagen” - mixing modern buildings, luxury flats, schools, cultural institutions, you name it. And now, fashion comes to Carlsberg. In the shape of Lala Berlin’s next summer collection, called City Jungle. Inspired by the African jungle and the 1920ies famous black singer and dancer Josephine Baker, there is a 20- 30ies feeling meets sophisticated hippie meets Iranian mosaics. Hand crocheted separates are worked as multi-coloured patchworks, and cotton dresses flow in terracotta or black and white Middle Eastern Kufia patterns. Carlsberg’s elephants may feel at home in Lala Berlin’s jungle, beautifully printed in green, pink, black and white on flowing dresses and skirts. Asymmetrical frills, unusual weavings, contrasting ribbons and delicate white cotton are all elements in clothes with a sensual touch aimed at the modern woman at any age. The elephants, the ancient buildings, the jungle music, the sky and the coloured clothes created a magical show. Of laid back clothes that can be mixed and matched – as you like it.

Sausage party HENRIK VIBSKOV Time: 21.00 Place: Meatpacking District Words: Jeppe Ugelvig
Vibskov constructs surreal and elaborate universes around concepts chosen seemingly at random. Entitled Salami – Kitchen of the Nonexistent, Denmark’s grand auteur had rather macabrely, even for him, chosen sausage production as the starting point for his collection: a live butchery stuffing knitted sausages occupied the centre of the catwalk in the warehouse courtyard in the Meatpacking district, while graphic salamis and oversized ‘butcher’s pockets’ interspersed the collection with regular intervals. Over the years, Henrik Vibskov has developed an almost hyper-tactical appreciation for texture, visible in every aspect of his multi-multi-disciplinary practice (artist, installation artist, musician, coffee shop owner). He approaches material histories with an enthusiasm so obvious that it’s hard to not get carried away: seersucker, twill, crispy poplin, puckered cuffs intermixes playfully under his tenure with couture-like savviness. With mega-ribboned kimonos and topstitched cuffs, more than anything, his SS17 collection was an exercise in construction. Thankfully, the collection quickly abstracted from the culinary and unfolded like a symphony composed over a series of themes and episodes. A true conceptualist, Vibskov is nonetheless never scared to stray from his chosen “universe” and return to his already elaborate archive – fringes brought to mind his art exhibition The Fringe Project (2009), and the kimono his recurring obsession with the East and its technical traditions. As for relevance, it’s hard to exactly pinpoint where Vibskov’s target audience or market lies today – but perhaps that’s exactly his point. As an artist, he is drawn to the non-sensical and the otherworldly, and after more than a decade in the industry, this is where he now permanently resides.

Playful new beginnings
DESIGNERS’ NEST Time: 13.00 Place: Børsen Words: Jeppe Ugelvig
“All beginnings are difficult,” not at least in the fashion industry. Still, it’s a measurable fact that generous support schemes for young design talents breed new markets and growth – which is why Designer’s Nest, the only of its kind in Denmark, is so incredibly important. There was a sense of hope in inaugurating the week with a set of new beginnings – 30 to be exact, spanning everything from menswear, eveningwear, couture, and ready-to-wear. Amongst the showcasing designers, Scandinavia’s sartorial lingua franca of minimalist simplicity was never far from the catwalk – but notably, a playful energy transpired from the diverse collections. Lingerie-ornamented fur, men in heels, idiosyncratic textiles, celeb-posters-as-skirts – and lots, and lots of glitter. Aalto University’s Maija Mero claimed third place, while the Royal Academy’s Julie Amalie Svensson won second. However, today’s limelight was univocally snatched by the award winner Shila Gaonkar, whose conceptual exploration of awkwardness, anti-fashion’s heritage, and gender’s third space alluded to a highly ambitious future for Nordic fashion.
From day to evening MAIKEL TAWADROS
Time: 12.00 Place: Søetatens Pigeskole Words: Courtney Forrest
In advance of his Spring/Summer 2017 show inspired by the “beauty that can be found in the feeling of fear”, designer Mikael Tawadros proudly proclaimed this collection his “most wearable to date” – a response to criticism in the past that he focused more on the conceptual than the commercial. The austere auditorium of a former girls school, with a live performance by Clara Sofie, created a sober backdrop for a muted palette of deep black, rose red and silver. Where Tawadros shines is in his tailoring and draping – a billowing satin trench, the fluid movement of asymmetric ruffles on leather and linen viscose blazers, sleek high-waisted crepe trousers. Porcupine septum rings and necklaces in collaboration with Facon Facon and paper art insect brooches created with Marianne Eriksen Scott-Hansen provided the finishing touches on a decidedly focused, feminine collection.

Comeback kid WON HUNDRED Time: 18.00 Place: Store Kannikestræde Words: Jeppe Ugelvig
There was plenty of hype around Won Hundred’s SS17 catwalk show, the first of its kind in 8 years. Before the show, creative director of both men’s and women’s Nikolaj Nielsen alluded to a reframed and tightened design identity after a few high street-pleasing collections – and this confidence resonated strongly in today’s presentation. The presentation took place in one of inner Copenhagen’s aristocratic apartments to the tunes of 80s rock n’ roll and various MTV bangers from the last decade, a pretty good indicator of the brand’s eclectic design identity, located somewhere between music culture, denim traditions and high street tailoring. White bowling shirts, grungy hair, bandanas, textured biker jackets and lots of cut-off denim all pointed to 80s youth culture as the absolute innuendo – with an occasional dash of shimmery nightclub extravaganza in the form of tight one-shouldered dresses, as well as some abstracted graphic prints. To top it off, the logo of the kitsch-worthy heavy metal band Iron Maiden had been replaced by the Won Hundred scripture, creating a kind of glorified concert merchandise for Nielsen’s own bandwagon. Did we mention the denim! It’s a cheeky strategy to so blatantly repurpose trashy street culture as commodified luxury – a strategy that nonetheless is seen increasingly on the catwalks of both Milan and Paris, and which has already proven extremely lucrative amongst consumers. It was Won Hundred at their most ambitious, conceptual even – and despite the rather blatant trip down memory lane, the collection felt extremely contemporary.

You have walked for Louis Vuitton and Valentino, among others, and done shoots for American and French Vogue and many more. What is the biggest moment or best experience from your career so far? The Louis Vuitton cruise 2017 show in Rio was an absolutely phenomenal experience! In part because it was my first trip to Brazil but also because of the incredibly beautiful and unique show location. Walking down the runway in Nicolas Ghesquière’s creations was an unforgettable experience.
What is the biggest moment or best experience from your career so far? My most exciting modelling experience so far was just after the Dior show in Paris. When we wrapped up the show, everyone was exhilarated and the energy in the room was awesome. We had been rehearsing for so long and everything worked out perfectly. After changing into our own clothes and leaving the dressing room, there were a ton of people and lots of celebrities that I had my picture taken with.
What would be the dream job for you? I have many dreams and goals in my job as a model - and one of them is walking the Victoria’s Secret how.
What would be the dream job for you? My dream would be to land a campaign for one of the truly big fashion houses.
What is your best experience from Copenhagen Fashion Week? I only did a few national shows but one of them was Designers Remix. I love Charlotte Eskildsen’s simple designs, so that was an amazing experience.
What is your best experience from Copenhagen Fashion Week? I did shows in Copenhagen when I was younger but recently I have mostly worked in other countries.
Where should we look out for you this season of Copenhagen Fashion Week? I have been confirmed for a big job in the middle of CFW this season - so I have to be patient and wait for next season.
Where should we look out for you this season of Copenhagen Fashion Week? This season I sadly can’t participate in CFW. I would love to have walked the shows that I got offered but I’m enrolling at a new boarding school at that point.
