Atomic 29 Valence Typeface Design Course: Typography IV

A sculptural typeface design. Twenty-two of the letters were created as sculptural pieces out of copper piping. The design of the remaining letters was informed by the initial letters.

Atomic 29 Sculptural Letterforms Course: Typography IV

The copper pipe sculptures from which the Atomic 29 typeface is derived. The initial prototype letterform sculptures were modular and could be altered. Letters could be taken apart and reformed to produce the 26 letter alphabet in two design directions with the punctuation. Twenty-two were then permanently formed as the letters of the valence direction as sculptural pieces.

This series of screen printed posters applies the design style of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) Federal Art Project posters to contemporary messages and demonstrates the timelessness of the graphic language of Modernism. The typography in the series relates to the work of WPA artists.

An educational website to complement my NEXT thesis installation. The site contains interactive content to explain the history of the New Deal, the role of Modernism in the WPA Posters, the application of screen printing to graphic design, and the development of my NEXT thesis installation posters. The website was designed to work responsively.

My thesis publication explores the influence of Modernism on the graphic language of the WPA Posters. Because of a wide dissemination of these posters through screen printing and massproduction, the posters helped the American public accept abstract art.

As a junior designer in this internship course, I was part of the team responsible for developing the identity and all the collateral material for the NEXT at the Corcoran 2012 exhibition which features the thesis work of graduating students. My primary tasks included developing the microsite (www.corcoran.org/ next2012) and touchscreens.

My primary responsibility for this group project was the digital media component. This included a custom Wordpress website and an infographic presented as a parallax scroller. Social media integration was a key feature of the website (www.ourhomeourvote.com). The infographic features imagery developed by July Ospina.

Chesapeake Bay Foundation: Watershed Campaign Course: Junior Design Studio I

A branding project for a membership campaign for an existing nonprofit, The Chesapeake Bay Foundation. Our design was to complement the existing brand. Collateral produced included developing a campaign strategy, print materials including an infographic, and two mobile applications (iPhone and iPad). The campaign was presented to the CBF at the end of the semester.

Finding Common Ground: Eric Gill & Jonathan Barnbrook Course: Typography III

For the typographers book project, this book design compares of the work of Eric Gill and Jonathan Barnbrook. The book is printed as a french fold and perfect bound. The cover/inside cover was screen printed, while the interior pages were laser printed onto textured Neenah classic linen Avon brilliant white paper.

Poem Compositional Sequence Course: Typography III

Expressive typographic poster design explorations featuring the poem “The Layers� by Stanley Kunick. Papercraft was incorporated into the designs. The typefaces American Typewriter, Franklin Gothic, and Clarendon are used.

Grocery Self-Checkout Interface Redesign Course: Interaction Design

Redesign of a machine interface, the grocery self-checkout, to improve user experience. The project involved researching the current interface and gathering user feedback, and creating several paper prototypes, both low resolution and high resolution, for user testing purposes. Feedback was used to inform each iteration of the redesign. The poster shows the overall flow of the function of the machine and a rendering of the new interface design. Examples of the touchscreens are also shown.

PrintXchange Website Course: Interaction Design In addition to my own printmaking work, the website design features the work of local Washington, DC artists: Preeti Gujral, Carolyn Hartmann, and Clare Winslow.

A website design for a new business model. PrintXchange would be forum for artists, particularly printmakers, to exchange single pieces of artwork. It involved conducting a competitive analysis, building a sitemap, creating personas and user scenarios, and wireframes based on user testing results. Flowcharts illustrate the mechanics of exchanges and purchases.

Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) Exhibition Course: Interaction Design

A proposed exhibition design for a program to educate the public about the GPEI. The goal would be to increase donor funding to the project. The exhibition would feature an interactive map of progress, videos about vaccine development and fieldwork, and country-specific interactive kiosks. Arduino prototypes were developed to simulate kiosk action.

Art in the Subway Course: Design for Mobile Devices

Design of a mobile application whose purpose is to educate the user on the artwork associated with the Arts for Transit public art program in the NYC subway system. The application makes use of mobile device features such as the camera, GPS and the accelerometer to deliver content. The wordmark was developed by researching the letterforms of the original Heins and LaFarge mosaics.

Development of an interactive DPS using the content of Studio 360’s radio program about the periodic table. Features the educational content and photography from The Elements by Theodore Gray and Nick Mann. Photography by Linda Fittante is showcased as well.
