Well, I’m disappointed and saddened to be writing the welcome letter to this Cordillera Ranch Living Magazine issue. Why? Because when Barry Denton, the regular author of these opening introductions, fell ill a couple of months ago, I never imagined he would still be fighting in the hospital to recover and rejoin the Cordillera Ranch operations. His absence fifty days after heading to the hospital continues to leave a void in our hearts and in our operation, and I’d much rather he’d be here to welcome you to this issue.
It was only seven days after he completed the thoughtful welcome piece for the prior issue that his illness took him to the hospital, and I never could have imagined that his health would take such a sudden, downward course. It has been a constant reminder that you never know what tomorrow may bring and that there are no guarantees — we all hear that regularly but somewhat ignore it until it smacks us right in the face, as this has done. While I wish I was greeting you on a more positive note, at least let this be another reminder to us all of why we should cherish every day with family, friends and colleagues around us, because we don’t know what tomorrow may bring.
Please enjoy this May issue, and particularly the cover feature on the Coleman family, who definitely enjoy all that Cordillera Ranch has to offer and live life to the max with family and friends.
If you want to keep updated on Barry’s progress, you can scan the qr code below to go to a caringbridge.com page set up to provide status updates. Thank you to everyone for the continued prayers, though his progress has not been as fast as we would all hope, they are working and the doctors continue to keep him on a path for a lung transplant and ultimate recovery.

AS AN AGGIE, YOU’RE IN GOOD COMPANY ON THE RANCH. TELL US ABOUT YOUR MAJOR AND HOW IT RELATES TO YOUR CAREER.
Stu and plenty of others love giving me a hard time for being an Aggie. We joke about it. It’s something I’m very proud of though. My major relates to my career almost entirely. My degree is Turfgrass Science in the Soil and Crop Sciences department. It gave me a broad overview of turfgrass systems but more specifically courses such as turfgrass anatomy, soil physics, water movement in soil structures and plenty more! It prepared me well but nothing is better than good old-fashioned experience.
ARE YOU A GOLFER AS WELL?
Yes, I started playing golf just before my freshman year in high school and ended up playing competitively all four years.
WHAT PAST WORK HISTORY PREPARED YOU FOR THE CLUBS?
Most recently is my experience at TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney. Expectations were very high there, just as they are at Cordillera Ranch, so I was familiar with the commitment the job requires. Also, the staff at Craig Ranch was large as well, so I already had experience managing a large staff with a very close attention to detail. The AT&T Byron Nelson was at Craig Ranch last May, so I was able to experience what it takes to condition a golf course to the highest standard, which undoubtedly benefits me here.
WHAT ARE YOUR DAY-TO-DAY RESPONSIBILITIES?
We start each morning with an agronomy meeting in our breakroom at 6:00am which I lead, we go over the morning job responsibilities and if there are any specific details the guys need to know about what the day is going to look like. On top of that, it’s managing the staff on a daily basis, scheduling and interviewing, hiring and training new employees. I also coordinate the agronomy plan on a daily/weekly basis based on what Stu has planned long-term. This includes a broad overview of what our goals for the week are and what exactly we are executing on a day-to-day basis, such as mowing, chemical applications, fertilizer applications and other unique projects.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT WORKING HERE?
There are lots of things to love about Cordillera but the one thing that stands out most, oddly enough, is the seclusion you feel when you’re on the golf course. There are still plenty of homes but coming from Dallas, the privacy at Cordillera is some-
thing I really appreciate. One of the first things I noticed was how quiet it was. On top of that, the natural geography of the golf course and the surrounding area is undeniably beautiful.
WHAT MAKES YOUR COLLEAGUES AN ASSET TO THE CLUBS?
Everyone is working towards the same goal — making The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch as good as they can possibly be. We work together as a team every day, navigating the golf course, discussing what we are seeing, what needs to be addressed and how we can make it better.
WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN FIVE YEARS?
The long-term plan has always been to have my own golf course and that has not changed. Having my own property to manage in five years will check that box for me.
HOW DO YOU LIKE BEING A NEW DAD?
Being a dad isn’t what I expected it to be — in all honesty I had no clue what to expect but I could have never imagined the feelings I have now. There was so much buildup and I thought I had covered all the bases and had some expectations but nothing compared to her coming into this world. It’s truly indescribable. We have a beautiful healthy girl and we couldn’t be more blessed.
WHAT’S ON YOUR PERSONAL BUCKET LIST?
My wife and I really like spending time outdoors so it’s mainly just visiting places we have never been. First on that list would probably be making a trip to Europe as neither of us have ever been. In the U.S., we want to visit the Pacific Northwest, hike the peaks, we haven’t hiked yet in the Rockies and maybe visit the Grand Canyon.

GIVING
KENDALL COUNTY CONNECTIONS
Connecting area residents with local nonprofit and community organizations
In June 2019, Cordillera Ranch resident Jeff Schwarz had been considering how he could better love his neighbor. He was often approached by newcomers to Kendall County on how to get involved in charitable organizations and knew he wanted to provide a way to make that easier. This ultimately led to the idea for the Kendall County Giving Connections website — a comprehensive list of nonprofits in the local area.
“I’ve always been a helper and empathetic to others,” Schwarz said regarding his desire to help the community. “Part of that is my religious upbringing…credit my mom for that, and part of it was seeing my dad’s work ethic, how he approached responsibility. He was Boerne’s City Administrator for 25 years and essentially held the keys to the city. When someone’s lights went out, our telephone rang. My dad lived by the mantra ‘with great power comes great responsibility,’ and I’ve tried to live my life that way, too.”
While other lists of nonprofit services already existed, Schwarz envisioned taking it a step further and creating a more dynamic site. In November 2020, he began to detail his plan for the site and spread the word. Robin Bull was the first to join the project, offering her information technology background, which earned her the role of website designer. A few months later, Lisa Brown teamed up with the group, bringing with her not only her public speaking and press-writing skills but her knowledge of nonprofits, including how to depict valid organizations from others. Around the same time, Hayden Schwarz, Jeff’s son, also signed up for the project, sharing creative ideas for the site and his knowledge of current technology tools. The four principals first gathered in June 2021, hashing out initial ideas for the new ven-

ture, and each contributing not only their talents but unwavering dedication to the cause.
“I’ve worked for nonprofits for over 15 years,” Brown said of her previous experience. “When Jeff mentioned to our Bible Study Group that he wanted to pursue this website project, I jumped right in. It was a natural fit for me as I knew the inner workings of a nonprofit and I have helped design several websites.”
The project originated as a seemingly simple but comprehensive resource for residents who were new to Cordillera Ranch to discover how they could become involved with local nonprofits. However, it quickly evolved into a much more robust website, including becoming a source for nonprofits, individuals in crisis and residents throughout Kendall County. The team of four pored over an estimated 500 entries, verifying and documenting their information to create individual pages for each nonprofit, religious organization and community-based organization, while ensuring viewers could easily locate the organization through consideration of multiple viewpoints.
Various volunteers, including Jamie Angelich and Carmel Widner, pitched in to proofread and contribute to the effort, and a group in the Cordillera Ranch neighborhood, nicknamed the Charity Chicks, also helped in the early stages. Paul Giguere, Kendall County Behavioral Health Initiative Project Director, was working on collecting information on services provided for behavioral health in Kendall County and learned of the KCGC project. Giguere and J. Schwarz then shared information back and forth, cross-referencing organizations and services to verify what the other might be missing.
“Jeff wanted to provide an opportunity for his neighbors to get connected with nonprofits either donating, volunteering or supporting,” said Giguere. “It started out, from my perspective, that he was looking for this opportunity to create this connection. Then it became this incredible platform for all living in our county who are looking to learn about services in and around the county. And it’s pretty incredible. Contributions from

individuals who truly care about others is one of the wonderful elements of living in Kendall County.”
Like most projects, the KCGC wasn’t met without its own set of challenges. Early into the endeavor, the team hit a roadblock in gathering information on their intake form for nonprofits. Since many organizations were not familiar with the project, the responses received ended up being very few. The group decided to pivot, create the web pages themselves and locate the information on public sites, verifying the information on the backend. In total, the team volunteered an estimated 1,200 hours (and counting) for the project. Additionally, there were some groups they had to say ‘no’ to (primarily those whose mission did not support the residents of Kendall County or were for-profits), however, J. Schwarz noted this overall was not a problem. Bull also ran into some technical obstacles with the website, as the scope of the website expanded but she was up for the task.
“My career was in IT, starting as a software developer, and then I became a business analyst. I worked on an in-house development team that developed and maintained the pointof-sales software for Rent-A-Center stores,” Bull said of her IT background. “I haven’t been in that role for a little over 10 years, and I didn’t work with internet apps or websites. The rapid
advancements in technology, as well as the differences working with various tools and programming languages has been a challenge but has been fun for me.”
At the heart of the mission, the website was created with the community in mind. It’s a wealth of information for those looking to donate either their time or financial resources and equally, those searching for assistance. Beyond the individual users, it also serves as a vital resource for the organizations themselves to better serve the community. The team hopes to continue to get the word out that this resource exists and keep the content up-to-date.
“Every citizen in our community now has access to everything they need to thrive in Kendall County,” Staci Almager, Chief Executive Officer for Hill Country Family Services, said. “Our agency staff uses the Kendall County Giving Connections website every single day to help families in crisis. This will benefit everything we’re doing locally. Our ability to move forward with our initiatives due to accurate information has saved us months of time. We will achieve our goals so much more quickly thanks to Jeff and his team.”

THE COLEMAN FAMILY
By Jenny Jurica :: Photography by David Teran :: Personal photos courtesy of the Coleman family
Claudine and Tony Coleman have lived in Cordillera Ranch since 2015, but by the time they settled here, they were already very familiar with the resort-like lifestyle and, most importantly, the Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course that draws so many to this community. Lorinda K. Photography
CordilleraRanchLiving.com | 31
The Colemans first joined The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch in 2007, when their daughter, Taylor, was a junior golfer who needed a place to practice and play. Taylor thrived on the course and the greens at Cordillera Ranch prepared her for national competitions. “I saw Tim Hobby for almost my entire golf career. He is based out of Sonterra and he helped me get to the collegiate level and he even caddied for me at the LPGA event I played in. After my wrist surgeries, I went to Bryan Gathright at Cordillera Ranch for lessons as well. We chose Cordillera because no practice facility in San Antonio compares. No other course in SA offers practice holes, and with the Bent greens, it gave me the best opportunity to succeed at other courses for
my tournaments throughout the U.S.,” explained Taylor. The leadership and camaraderie (both on and off the course) that the Colemans experienced at the Golf Club made a lasting impression on the whole family. “Cordillera, unlike many golf clubs, was extremely accommodating and accepting of Taylor as a young golfer,” said the Colemans.
As a result of her natural abilities and with the support of her professional instructors, Taylor won the 5A High School Golf Championship as a high school sophomore. That same year, Taylor qualified for an LPGA event and was featured on the Golf Channel after shooting an opening round of 68 — a feat that is almost unheard of, especially in a player as young as Taylor was at the time. But as it too often happens, injuries derailed her plans for a professional future in golf. She said, “When I grew up, my goal and plan was to play on the LPGA after college, but I had my third wrist surgery in 2017 and realized my wrist couldn’t hold up to practicing every day. I wouldn’t be able to practice the necessary amount or play the certain number of days in a row for the LPGA so that is when I switched my degree and focused on finding a good job after college and getting my Masters.”
The support and encouragement that Taylor received from the professionals and residents at the Golf Club endeared Cordillera Ranch to the Coleman family and is what ultimately led them to finally make the move from San Antonio to the community when Taylor went off to college.
These days, Tony and Claudine spend their free time exercising at either the gym at their home or at The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch Fitness Center. “It’s always been a part of our lives,” Claudine said, an avid runner and former competitor in marathons and triathlons. In the last few years, her races have consisted of 5Ks, 10Ks and half marathons, while Tony supplements his fitness regime by playing golf every weekend.
But long before Cordillera Ranch (or even Texas) was on the Colemans’ radar, their story began in Fountain Valley, California. Tony, who was born in Seattle but moved to Southern California as a teen, worked in the IT department at CAPP (Council of Accountable Physician Practices) Care. California-born Claudine worked part time at CAPP Care while attending UCLA, where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in English. Sparks flew in the

workplace when Tony and Claudine got to know one another. “Tony told me years later that he made a copy of a picture I had on my desk of my (then) boyfriend and myself, but he cut my boyfriend out of the photo!” remembers Claudine of their early days of courtship.
The couple married in 1992 and made the move from the west coast to San Antonio. Tony worked for various companies, including Cisco Systems, where he held several different leadership roles, while Claudine became a stay-at-home mother when Taylor was born in 1997. It was only after Taylor was in
high school and got her driver’s license, that Claudine decided to try her hand in real estate. Today, Claudine is a Realtor at JBGoodwin REALTORS®. “Real estate is interesting to me because it is always changing and every transaction is different,” said Claudine.
Tony, who obtained his education from Control Data Institute, has been in the IT industry for over 30 years. In 2014, Tony left Cisco for a local IT solutions company and is currently Vice President of Sales and Strategy, as well as a partner at Computer Solutions.
While the Colemans’ careers have afforded them much success and accomplishment, perhaps nothing in their lives has brought them as much pride as watching Taylor spread her wings and soar.
Taylor was offered many full-ride golf scholarships when it was time for college and she ultimately chose Arizona State University for both her Bachelor of Science, as well as her Master of Science degrees. Taylor is now a Business Analytics Developer at General Dynamics Missions Systems. She began her career in Arizona, but made the move back to San Antonio when the pandemic allowed her to work from home. “I wish I could say that I, too, live in Cordillera Ranch, but I just finished building a home in Timberwood Park — only 25 minutes away,” said Taylor.
The apple certainly doesn’t fall far from the tree in the Coleman family, as Taylor enjoys exercising on her Peloton bike and

spending her free time playing golf with her boyfriend. And there’s always time for a father/daughter round: “I love that my dad and I will always be able to play golf together. He’s what got me into golf, and now we will get to share that for the rest of our lives.”
At home at Cordillera Ranch, Tony and Claudine love spending time with their three dogs — two Weimaraners, Bunker, who is 14 and Fury, who is 9, as well as an adorable rescued dog that Taylor brought home from college. “Our dogs have always been a part of the family and they definitely keep life interesting,” added Tony and Claudine.
Travel is something that the Colemans are eager to welcome back into their lives, post-COVID. The couple is excited about a return trip to Scotland and Ireland that was nixed due to the pandemic, but is back on the calendar for next summer. In the meantime, the couple enjoys following Formula 1 races, most of which they watch from home — including all of the practice and qualifying rounds — but Tony and Claudine have frequented the Circuit of the Americas for F1 races and also had the rare opportunity to travel across the globe to watch a race. “We were lucky
enough to travel to Monaco three years ago to watch a race. It was an amazing trip,” said Claudine.
The Colemans love living at Cordillera Ranch and are taking advantage of all that the area has to offer. When not on the golf course or at the gym, the Colemans enjoy exploring their new hometown of Boerne, Texas, naming local favorites, The Dienger Trading Co. and Peggy’s on the Green, as well as Richter Tavern for a night out. But ultimately, home is where the heart is.
“We love the amenities, our house and the neighborhood,” said Claudine. “I feel like we live at a resort,” added Tony. “It makes driving to San Antonio for work and back every day that much better.”

MARCH TOURNAMENTS
Tournament season at the Golf Club is in full swing. El Compadre Member/Member was moved to March this year from its previous spot to open the golf course for more regular play in the month of May. This and the Couples Putting Tournament had terrific turnouts!
By Corey Roberson, Director of Golf
EL COMPADRE MEMBER/MEMBER
The 2022 El Compadre Member/Member was contested over two days where the 80-player field played four different formats. The first day, the players could feed off each other in best ball and shamble formats. On the second day, it got a little more interesting with scramble and modified alternate shot. After 36 holes of golf, the seven flight winners headed to a shootout.
First Flight - Chris Hill & Charlie Hill
Second Flight - Tony Coleman & Rick Webb
Third Flight - Roy Sachs & Zach Watts
Fourth Flight - Doug Bird & Tom Boehme
Fifth Flight - Ron Ainsworth & Richard Jackson
Sixth Flight - Ron Doornink & Nick Schommer Seventh Flight - Tony Kohn & Brian Werner
The Doornink/Schommer and Sachs/Watts teams were eliminated on #10 and then things got a little weird on #16. The first two guys couldn’t find dry land, two found the green and one ended up against the rocks in the back bunker. For good measure, the team of Ainsworth/Jackson donated two more balls to the canyon from the drop zone — instead of breaking open another fresh sleeve, they removed themselves from the shootout. The Boehme/Bird team made a tough 5 from the back bunker, which tied Kohn/Werner after they played their third shot from the drop zone. This led to a chip off where Doug Bird hit a shot that left the crowd speechless — his lobber slid right under the ball and it didn’t move. This left Tony Kohn, who was playing in his first ever golf tournament, with a fairly simple shot — all he had to do was advance his ball about three inches to win the chip off and make it to the next hole.
On the 17th tee, the three teams left standing were Hill/Hill, Coleman/ Webb and Kohn/Werner. That hole would end with Charlie Hill draining a sliding 8-footer to advance and Coleman/Webb chipping off against Kohn/ Werner. The selected chip off required a lofted wedge and Rick Webb stuffed it to about three feet. Brian Werner played his off the backstop and needed about another six inches of roll back to get inside of Rick’s chip. The Kohn/ Werner team were eliminated..
For the last hole — #18 — Charlie Hill and Rick Webb both hit good tee shots into the fairway. Tony Coleman yanked his second shot left into the trees. Chris had a short wedge left and while his knees almost hit the ground through impact, it was a beautiful shot that landed past the hole and sucked back. Tony didn’t leave his partner in a very good spot and after they chipped it a couple of times, Charlie drained at 6-footer for the win. I imagine Charlie and Chris found a good spot for the Championship Belts in their offices.

COUPLES PUTTING:
The 2022 Couples Putting tournament saw a massive turnout of 144 players. We actually changed the format so we could fit more players in the tournament while maintaining a reasonable pace of play. The field was paired in 8-balls and while there was a little modified alternate shot putting going on, that wasn’t the main priority. This event is all about having a good time, enjoying a fresh cocktail and hanging out with your friends. My favorite comment in this event is from the spouses that don’t actually play golf but enjoy something as low-pressure as the putting tournament. It wouldn’t be an
official tournament recap without mentioning our 2022 Champions — Mark and Mary Brooker. They fired an impressive 3 over par 39 to win by one over new members, David and Polly Hinshaw.
See you on the course!

JUNIOR GOLF CLINICS
Junior golfers find innovative instruction and camaraderie on the course at The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch.
As a professional staff, we are delighted to witness the excitement surrounding the game of golf and are proud to be able to assist our membership in developing their skills and, most importantly, their enjoyment of the game. Junior golfers are now frequenting the golf course and as a Club we are proud and excited for the future of the game.
CORDILLERA LINKSTARS
Adapted from the popular Operation 36 program we previously ran at the Club,
Linkstars focuses on curriculum-based instruction in all areas of the game and oncourse 9-hole challenges starting 25 yards from the hole, working all the way back to the tee box. Classes are on Wednesday evenings for children between the ages of 6 and 14 years old. During the spring and fall, junior golfers commit to a semester of coaching. We realized that during the summer months families’ needs change and programs require flexibility, so we created a program unlike any other where juniors can sign up on a weekly basis and
attend as many or as few sessions as they wish and still excel. Since its inception in 2020, over 60 juniors have honed their skills and found a love for the game.
CORDILLERA LIL’ LINKSTARS
Arguably our fastest growing program at the Club, the Lil’ Linkstars (formerly Future 36ers) follows the same blueprint and schedule as the Linkstars program but delivered in a slightly condensed version making it more manageable for the littles to follow along. On Thursday

evenings, 3- to 6-year-olds are taught the basic principles of golf and then routinely test their new skills in 3-hole challenges starting just 25 yards from the hole. In just over a year, more than 25 Lil’ Linkstars have been introduced to the game and many have already made the smooth transition to the Linkstars program. Getting junior golfers on the golf course early and building confidence and understanding when playing the game is key to our programming and what sets us apart from others.
CORDILLERA JUNIOR GOLF CAMP
Junior Golf Camps offer a 4-day experience for 6- to 14-year-olds focusing on all aspects of the game. Whether new to golf or an experienced player, all juniors have the opportunity to learn and develop their skills in a fun environment through instruction, play and friendly individual and team competition. Juniors will be coached on the integrity of the game with focus on the rules and proper etiquette. With sessions from 9:00am to 1:00pm each day, camps are the perfect way to immerse your junior in the game. After a full morning of golf, campers enjoy lunch and cooling off at the pool.
CORDILLERA LITTLE RANCHERS GOLF CAMP
New this year, the Little Ranchers Golf Camps for 3- to 6-year-olds are the perfect introduction not only to golf, but
to camps in general. Camps run bi-weekly throughout the summer from 2:00 to 3:00pm. Junior golfers will work closely with our expert coaches to master the basic principles of the game, while learning rules, etiquette and how to apply their skills on a golf course. We strive to create a fun and engaging environment full of learning and growth.
If you would like more information or to register for any upcoming Junior Golf Clinics and Summer Golf Camps, please contact Katie Dillard.

AMAZING CLASSES for Your Fitness Recipe
By Tamra Christiansen, Director of Fitness and Wellness
Spring is here and with summer just around the corner, fitness is in the forefront of our minds. I love summer in seeing the new growth of beautiful trees and flowers, the warmth in the air and the longer daylight hours. At Cordillera Ranch, the sunrises are astounding and the sunsets are just as remarkable. With all the great weather, we love to get out there and play. Summer is around the corner and vacations are being planned, which means we work out hard so we can play hard.
Creating a routine is more important for staying healthy and balanced than one might realize. Most think, “I will just do more cardio,” or “I will lift weights three times a week,” or “I will eat healthier.” All of those are good ideas, but those ideas must be blended for balance and injury prevention.
Let’s make a recipe for fitness: 3-4 days of strength training, 3-5 days of cardio, flexibility throughout the week and nutrition to match up to our added activity.
With this in mind, we have classes for all fitness levels and goals. I am going to break down the classes we have available for your perfect blend of health, fitness and relaxation.
For full-body strength training, we have Strength Resistance Training (SRT) with Kelly Vizzone, who has been with Cordillera Ranch for six years. Her SRT class is a total body workout! We use a personally selected number of dumbbells, weight plates and barbells to work the muscular endurance of your body. You

will feel and see a difference within the first two weeks of working in this class on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9:15am in the group exercise studio. To balance out all the work from SRT, take Yoga Fit at 10:15am on those same days. Kelly will leave you feeling fluid and flexible in this flow class that keeps you moving. You finish this class with a well-earned relaxation.
Need an early morning workout? Natalie Sales teaches a full-body strength class as well! Join Natalie at 6:30am on Mondays and Wednesdays for Sets & Reps. This class will change your body’s shape quickly and effectively with great music to get your day started right.
HIIT training is proven to burn stored fat effectively as well as revving metabolism. I teach the OutFITter Workout on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:45am at the Outfitter Center. This class works strength, stamina, core and cardio, and options are offered for all levels. We do this class year-round and love that it gets our heart pumping. Early morning classes are tough to start, but think of it this way: nothing gets in the way of your workout because you got it done first thing.
In our mind, body, toning and shaping categories, we have our amazing Master Pilates instructor, Kris Cracknell, who will work to lengthen and strengthen your muscles. Kris has been with Cordillera Ranch for eight years and has grown the Pilates program so much that we brought in another Pilates instructor, Ronnie White. Ronnie started with us a little over six months ago and has brought talent in Pilates reformer, Pilates chair and the increasingly popular Barrelates.
Pilates combines flexibility and makes your whole body — especially your core! — stronger. We have recently brought in Pilates chairs, which challenge your body even more. The Jumpboard and Barrelates classes will give you a cardio pump and leave you with a badge of soreness to show the work well done.
Kathy Miller is a Personal Trainer and an amazing instructor for us here at Cordillera Ranch. Kathy has been with Cordillera Ranch since December of 2021. She teaches Group Cycle, Functionally Fit and will be teaching Aqua Fitness as well starting in May! Aqua Fitness is designed for all levels and is a fun way to stay cool and burn calories to a fun playlist of music!
Kelly also teaches ELDOA, and recently brought in ELDOA for Golf. This class aligns the spine and joints, stretches the myofascial lines of the body and brings awareness to better posture. This alignment improves us for everyday life, but especially for golf, tennis and many other sports.
Like a list of ingredients for a favorite dish, we all need a fitness recipe for success. As always, I am here to help you determine your most effective plan and I look forward to guiding you on your path to wellness.

STEWARDSHIP and CONSERVATION in Cordillera Ranch
By Shane Reynolds, Outdoor Recreation Director and Outfitter
OUTDOORS
Taking care of the natural resources within Cordillera Ranch, which face increasing pressures and demands from a growing community, is a task that requires everyone to lend a hand at whatever level they can. This topic comes to my mind often as I travel around the Ranch to our different Club facilities and parks and see the tremendous growth that has taken place over my sixteen years here.
I recall a message I received from a Cordillera Ranch property owner, who proceeded to tell me there was a lot of broken glass at the park on the shores of the Guadalupe River where we launch kayaks. The location is also a great place for young kids to enjoy the banks of this beautiful waterway. When I arrived, I was shocked to see approximately 12 beer bottles shattered into hundreds of pieces on the edge of the river. As I proceeded to slowly pick up all the glass, my mind drifted to wonder who might be so compelled to trash such a pristine environment? I thought, yes, we were all teenagers at some point, but for some reason I never would have considered breaking glass next to a river.
One of the best places to begin to teach kids about conservation and stewardship is right where you live. Whether it’s a 2-acre lot or a 50-acre estate, your “backyard” is an important part of a larger natural community and ecosystem. The large expanse of neatly trimmed turf that’s pleasing to some is a very inhospitable environment for wildlife, and the practices necessary to maintain such a landscape often contribute to water quality and quantity problems. By making different landscaping choices, property owners can do their part to assure healthier habitats and cleaner creeks and lakes. One the great benefits of living in Cordillera Ranch is the fact that most of the property is
CordilleraRanchLiving.com | 47
required to remain in its natural state with native grasses that flourish in the Texas Hill Country.
Teaching stewardship, conservation and environmental ethics to children can often be challenging. Can you teach someone how to act in the outdoors? Not really. However, you can make them aware of the consequences of their actions. You can also lead by example and show them what they can do to promote the conservation of our natural resources and the creatures that live there.
Be sure to always give your kids and grandkids unfettered time in the natural world — time away from organized sports or adult-directed activities. Give them lengthy time to explore and play outside. It might take the form of building a fort from found objects, damming a creek or collecting natural objects like shells, rocks or acorns. These moments in nature are an important way for kids to develop a strong connection to nature and the environment. Here are a few tips you may find helpful in passing on key messages of conservation and ethics to the next generation who call Cordillera Ranch home.
We’ll use fishing as an example. You can begin by engaging your kids in a discussion of ethical dilemmas they may face while fishing at Swede Creek Lake or the Guadalupe River. Some of these dilemmas will include catch and release, environmental responsibility, the use of barb-less hooks, etc. Consider presenting an issue and then give an ethical solution to that issue.
A good rule of thumb is to remember that ethics are caught, not taught. So set a good example when you take youngsters or guests fishing. Here’s a good role model activity: place a plastic bag in your pocket while fishing at Swede Creek Lake or the
Guadalupe River. Without saying a word, begin to walk around and pick up trash. The children and guests hopefully should start to copy your actions and eventually start helping with the clean up. Another thing you can do is practice catch and release. Explain that wetting your hands when handling fish helps minimize the damage to the fish’s protective slime.
Passing on good conservation habits and ethics can be challenging. However, the benefits to fish and wildlife are extremely important. Discussing with children and guests the consequences of incorrect actions and how those actions can hurt wildlife is a starting point. As a resident of Cordillera Ranch, you have the opportunity, one by one, child by child, guest by guest, to set an example for future generations to follow as they begin to enjoy the wonderful environment of Cordillera Ranch and the great outdoor resources on the Ranch.
A final suggestion to promote conservation: if you are building at Cordillera Ranch, talk to your builder and sub-contractors about taking ownership of your construction project with a good environmental perspective on stewardship. The construction parameters that Cordillera Ranch have in place are stringent and that’s on purpose — to protect this beautiful environment that we all love. Be sure they follow the rules and keep the construction site clean and neat and protect the native areas of your land.

REMEMBER AN EVENT TO
By Jessica Beals, Club Events Corrdinator :: Photography by Kelsey Grudle
We often think to ourselves: “I can save a lot of money. I have the time to do it.” But the reality is that planning a party, whether formal or casual, is much more complex than one would think. At The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch, we want the planning of your event to be as enjoyable as the party, and our professional staff can ensure that we can make that happen, whether your celebrations are centered on the natural beauty and unique features of one of our facilities or if you choose to entertain at your home on the Ranch. These are the five reasons to hire an event planner!
SPECIAL EVENTS
52 | MAY/JUNE 2022
1. AN EVENT PLANNER REDUCES STRESS.
We take the weight off your shoulders and focus on what is most important to you. From food selections and activities to table settings, decor and so much more, we can work within your budget, hand-fit your needs and create a beautiful event that is everything you have envisioned.
2. AN EVENT PLANNER HAS CONNECTIONS.
The event planning industry is a small world. We have done the legwork with a lot of networking to establish relationships with the best and most trusted vendors. We can source anything you dream or desire for your party, and ensure it arrives on time. Our lists of third-party vendors include florals, photographers, DJ’s, balloon garlands, rentals and more. When using the Cordillera Ranch event team, we are a “one stop shop” for all your needs. Planning a party from scratch is a time-consuming task, but with our extensive resources, we save you the time it takes to research and coordinate with vendors.

3. AN EVENT PLANNER CAN REDUCE COSTS.
Fostering relationships with third-party vendors also allows us to negotiate the best prices for your event — it’s akin to working in bulk. Additionally, the unexpected can and will happen, and an event planner can foresee potential issues and correct things before they cost more money or interfere with the festivities.
4. AN EVENT PLANNER BRINGS EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE.
We make great advisors for what is popular and are familiar with what doesn’t work. We are constantly researching current trends to “wow” your guests, and foresee trends to source the most innovative products available. Not only are we selfresearching, but we are part of national organizations that collaborate to bring the best forward.
5. AN EVENT PLANNER LETS YOU ENJOY YOURSELF.
To begin with, rather than focusing on polished silverware, you can pop open a bottle of Champagne and get ready for your event at ease, showing up refreshed and looking your best. We make sure all the details are met so you can enjoy your party and focus on your guests. When you hire us, you can relax and rest assured that everything will go according to plan. This way, you can have beautiful memories of your time with your family and friends.

GOLF TRIP THE WISCONSIN
By
After the pandemic stalled our 2020 Wisconsin Golf Trip plans, we were able to reschedule for this August and the trip booked in record time. It’s no wonder. We will have the opportunity to play six of the Top 100 golf courses, including Whistling Straits and Blackwolf Run along the shores of Lake Michigan, Erin Hills with its unique topography and the historic Lac La Belle. Needless to say, this trip is all about great golf. It will be a long week as most of these courses are walking only, but we’ll have caddies to lighten the load. Here’s a look at the itinerary.
ON AUGUST 1, we fly early into Milwaukee and make the onehour drive to the Destination Kohler® luxury golf resort, home of the legendary Whistling Straits®. If travel time is in our favor, we are scheduled to warm-up at The Baths of Blackwolf Run®. This 27-acre, 10-hole course with four water features was designed by Chris Lutzke and Herb Kohler. Later in the afternoon, we play The River, also at Blackwolf Run. This challenging yet beautiful course borders the Sheboygan River and offers rolling greens with water features and gorges. After a full day of travel and golf, we will overnight at the Inn on Woodlake on the resort property. This classic inn sits on the banks of the Wood Lake and includes winding trails and its own beach. And it would not be complete without the signature KOHLER® shower experience!

The Club at Lac La Belle
TUESDAY MORNING begins at the Irish of Whistling Straits®. Just inland from Lake Michigan, four meandering streams cross through grassland and dunes to form 18 interesting holes and a truly beautiful course to play. After lunch, we head to The Straits® This course is the crown jewel of the four as it’s hosted three PGA Championships, one Senior Open Championship and most recently, the Ryder Cup. The Straits course is defined by the open, rugged and windswept terrain, sculpted along two miles of the Lake Michigan shoreline. If you recall watching the Ryder Cup this year, the wind can blow and there is plenty of trouble to be found. This evening includes dinner at the club and a second night at the Inn on Woodlake.
ON WEDNESDAY, we drive to Erin Hills, approximately 70 miles from Whistling Straits. Erin Hills is a very unique golf course as it was specifically designed to host the 2017 U.S. Open that Brooks Koepka won in commanding fashion. Architects adopted a minimalist approach in designing Erin Hills, as nature had sculpted the land so well that the holes seemed to emerge from the property. The golf course is routed over the Kettle Moraine areas left by glaciers, surrounded by wetlands and a river, with ground that consists of sand and small rock. After a long day of golf on a championship course, a little night putting will be pretty fun. The Drumlin, Erin Hill’s most recent addition, is a 63,000-square-foot horseshoe-shaped putting course. The 18-hole putting layout is bisected by a central ridge that gives it a feel of front and back nines. On this night, we will dine and stay locally.
FOR OUR FINAL DAY, we play the historic course at Lac La Belle in Oconomowoc. Founded in 1896, one of the oldest courses in Wisconsin, Lac La Belle recently reopened after a significant renovation that cleared parts of the landscape while respecting the original layout.
After playing six of the top courses in the U.S., we head home. Through The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch Signature Vacations, we have curated a trip with the same level of accommodations and attention that our members expect while living on the Ranch or traveling with us on a variety of exclusive and well-appointed trips. Our vacation packages are scheduled year-round and designed to appeal to the many interests of Club members. Stay tuned for more experiences through the Clubs.

CORDILLERA RANCH PARKS & TRAILS
By Kevin Koether, POA General Manager
PA R KS & TRAILS MAP
Cordillera Ranch offers over twenty miles of walking trails and nearly one hundred acres of park land. The walking trails offer a unique opportunity to explore Cordillera and the beauty of the Texas Hill Country.Though the trails interconnect, for this article they’re segmented into three systems spread across the vast acreage that is Cordillera Ranch.
The Cordillera Trace Trail starts at the far west side of the Ranch at the Equestrian Center and ends approximately six miles later at the Pavilion Park adjacent to Park Ridge. The Cordillera Trace Trail is a favorite of our equestrians. The Trace Trail runs parallel to Cordillera Trace for a majority of the length; however, it cuts across Horseshoe Bend and features two unique breakaways leading to Spring Creek as well as the Spring Creek Nature Area. The Spring Creek Nature Area is twelve acres of natural creek bed with fantastic rock formations and magnificent trees, which provide an abundance of shade. Continuing down Cordillera Trace over the rolling hills, the trail intersects with the
Rio Cordillera Trail at the intersection of the two roads. Trace Trail breaks away from the roadway, moving through native landscape, eventually crossing Park Ridge and turning left to outlet onto Valley Knoll. The trail picks back up further down Park Ridge, again moving through the native area and eventually ending at the Pavilion Park, which offers the use of Cordillera Ranch’s covered pavilion equipped with multiple picnic tables and restroom facilities. The park also has a baseball diamond alongside our soccer fields, which are available to all Property Owners. The parking lot at Pavilion Park is also equipped with a basketball goal for those of you wanting to practice your midrange jump shot. The pavilion is available to rent and is regularly used for birthday parties, club meetings and other social gatherings.
The Rio Cordillera Trail offers more native terrain than the Cordillera Trace Trail, running five miles from the intersection of Cordillera Trace and Rio Cordillera all the way to FM 3351. The Rio Trail begins by running parallel to Rio Cordillera for a short distance then turns down Falcon Point. At the Falcon Point cul-de-sac, the trail breaks right heading back into the native vegetation, through some majestic oaks and returning out onto Legacy Pointe. The trail moves along Legacy Pointe and then

turns right on Swede Creek, eventually crossing over Rio Cordillera and onto Swede Canyon. Heading down Swede Canyon a short distance, the entrance to South Park Road opens to the left. The Rio Trail moves through the beautiful twenty-plus acres of the Swede Creek Park, which offers an amazing landscape that includes five individual camping locations equipped with grills, fire pits, picnic tables and trash receptacles. Property Owners are able to reserve campsites by emailing the POA office at crpoa@cordilleraranch.com. Along with the campsites, Swede Creek Park has a fishing pond and access to the Guadalupe River. The river entrance has a natural parking area along with campsite number five being located at the top of the hill. Swede Creek Park is regularly occupied by Property Owners walking with their dogs, hikers and those hoping to land that fish that always seems to get away. The park is also home to the fantastic Pico-Boo Halloween event that is coming up on its seventh year running. The Rio Cordillera Trail then follows Rio Cordillera all the way to FM 3351.
The Springs Trail is currently over nine miles in length and growing, starting at the Springs Sports Park and traversing all the way to Panther Creek. The Springs Sports Park hosts a baseball diamond, soccer field and basketball goals. The park is bordered with numerous trees blocking a majority of the sightline and sounds of FM 3351. The Springs Trail splits off in three directions: one heading along Cordillera Springs, one cutting through a small amount of native vegetation out-letting onto the Marigold Circle cul-de-sac and the third trail winding its way through our native Juniper and Oak trees ending at the Vaquero Pass cul-de-sac. The trail meanders its way along Cordillera Springs, turning left and heading to Ledgestone Trail as well as a long branch moving through to Landmark Ridge. The Trail will continue along Monterey Trail; however, please note the Trail is not currently in place.
With Cordillera Springs continuing to develop, the current plan is to continue adding more trails as we move forward.
We ask that all Property Owners and their guests respect the beauty and natural habitat that lies within Cordillera Ranch. While using the trail systems, please refrain from littering as well as moving off the trail as you might be entering private property. No motorized vehicles are allowed on the trail systems as we wish to preserve the safety of all those using the trails. Cordillera Ranch rules also state that dogs must always remain on a leash on the trails. The trails are a fantastic opportunity to observe our local wildlife such as our whitetail and axis deer, wild turkeys, foxes and you might even catch a glimpse of a roadrunner or two. Please ensure to be mindful of your surroundings while utilizing the trails. Equestrians actively utilize the trails as well so please limit loud noises while walking on the trails so as not to startle any horses or the riders.
The Cordillera Ranch Maintenance and Grounds Team work diligently to ensure that the trails are maintained properly while also respecting the native nature of the trails. If you happen to see something such as a tree that has fallen across part of the trail or an area washing out, please contact the POA office with the location. If you are able to send a picture, that is even more helpful.
If you wish to reserve the Pavilion, campsites or any of the athletic fields, please reach out to the POA office and we will be happy to help guide you through the process. Reservation requests must be submitted no later than 72 hours prior to the event so that the POA team can ensure any necessary gate codes are programmed, the guards are made aware of the reservations and a site walk can be performed prior to the event.
Kevin Koether is the POA General Manager at Cordillera Ranch. He can be reached at crpoa@cordilleraranch.com and 830.336.3501.

NEW BLUFF VIEW ESTATES
IN
By Charlie Hill
If you’ve ventured into some of the most recent phases of new homesites in The Springs of Cordillera Ranch, you’ve probably seen the breathtaking views to the east and southeast across the Cypress-tree-lined Panther Creek canyon. The newest release, Unit 303, offered last month, includes 15 homesites that sit atop a bluff above this beautiful canyon and meadow area. Seven of the homesites are perched on a peninsula that juts out, overlooking this 35 acre future parkland, which is bisected by the seasonal Panther Creek. A short half-mile hike through the meadow, following the creek bed takes you to the Guadalupe River.
These homesites, ranging in size from 1.2 to 3.5 acres, offer extremely unique rock outcroppings off the back of the homesites, which frame the stunning views of the canyon. These east-facing estates are also ideally oriented for expansive backyard patios to capture the prevailing southeast breezes. In just the first two weeks of this new release, over half of the lots are already sold so don’t waste time as this is one of the hottest new offerings in The Springs. HOME TOUR TODD GLOWKA BUILDER, INC.
70 | MAY/JUNE 2022
Some might say that finding the right builder is akin to finding your soulmate, particularly when it comes to building your dream home, which is why the moment felt even more serendipitous when Cindy and Keith Romere discovered Todd Glowka of Todd Glowka Builder, Inc.
It all started when Keith and Cindy attended a wedding at Branded T Ranch near Kendalia, Texas, just a hop, skip and jump from Cordillera Ranch. “They had dismantled a circa 1870 English hay barn from upstate New York and turned it into an exquisite wedding and event venue, and we were in awe of the details of the reconstruction. We knew we would love to incorporate some reclaimed features into our own build,” explained Cindy.
It just so happened that when they researched the Preferred Builders for the Cordillera Ranch community, they discovered that the Party Barn was one of Todd Glowka’s projects. It seemed like the fates had indeed aligned.
CordilleraRanchLiving.com | 71
The Romeres met Todd at one of the homes he had built and they hit it off immediately. “He said, ‘I try to build your house as if I’m going to live in it myself,’ but what really caught my attention was learning he had travelled across the country with his client to look at the old barn prior to beginning that project,” shared Keith.
Todd also took the time to walk numerous lots with them in order to find the perfect one. “This being our first build, we didn’t know the nuances of building in the Texas Hill Country. Based on our budget and type of build, Todd provided great guidance in making that selection,” added Keith.
Todd remembers walking the lots with them. “As a certified green builder, we look at shade trees on the lots, the east/ west sun configuration… you don’t want the rear of the house facing due west. That Texas sun will eat you alive,” he said. “I really enjoyed the process of working with the Romeres. They’re sweet people, and Cindy worked very diligently with Cheryl and Theresa of Twin Sisters Interiors, as well as with Mike Jones, the project manager.”
Todd grew up in the industry, as his father worked in outside lumber sales, so he was able to travel with him as he drove from job to job. After putting in 12 years with corporate America, Todd decided he wanted to build homes, which he’s been doing now for 23 years. “It’s a passion for us. I like being outside with the trades and dealing with different challenges every day. With my clients I like to take a personal, hands-on approach,” said Todd.
Todd and his team are known for building a plethora of different architectural styles, such as Hill Country, modern, transitional and Mediterranean. “We don’t want to be known for just one genre — we like to mix it up, but my favorite style to build is that heavy Texas Hill Country with reclaimed materials or transitional,” he shared, which is the reason why he was an ideal match for the Romeres.
The peace and serenity of Cordillera Ranch inspired the lovely couple to create a light-filled home with large windows that would elegantly frame the landscape. “We wanted a slightly different version of Texas Hill Country design for the interior — a European farmhouse feel using reclaimed wood beams, barnwood and antique doors as accents. Our desire was to create a comfortable home with a timeless design that is casual and understated, somewhere between rustic and refined,” explained Cindy.
Although budget did not permit an extensive use of reclaimed wood and timbers, they were still able to thoughtfully integrate these features into the house to create a one-story dream home that they adore.
“The ceiling beams, lintels and mantles have great character. They came from a century-old barn in Ohio,” noted Cindy. “The great room built-ins and foyer ceiling are made of barnwood, the custom double front doors are reclaimed white oak, and the kitchen vent hood is reclaimed with antiqued zinc trim,” said Cindy.
The master suite is a gem, with its large arched window and

ceiling which mirrors the arch, along with antique doors leading into the bath. A custom fixture hangs over the soaking tub and the walk-through shower features a window that frames a beautiful old live oak. “Our bedroom was quite a challenge for the carpenters with the unique over-sized arched window, but it turned out beautifully,” said Cindy.
In the kitchen, quartzite countertops complement the light wood cabinetry with contrasting darker wood for the island and vent hood. Additional custom touches include a pantry door and cabinet doors with seeded glass, barn doors on the den and reclaimed beams for the mantels to showcase the indoor and outdoor fireplaces.
The four-bedroom, four-bath layout (with the den doubling as a bedroom) also includes a study and a spacious covered veranda with an outdoor grill and fireplace facing the pool.
“The house looks unreal. I was over there last week. It’s one thing to see it when it’s finished, but it’s another thing to see it when it’s furnished. It looks like a model home,” Todd said proudly. “Cordillera Ranch is a very unique subdivision. I haven’t seen another like it, which is why there’s so much demand. The way they maintain the community and level of houses going in is mind blowing!”
