I’d be curious to know from those of you that have been around Cordillera Ranch for a while, if you’ve noticed the sheer amount of growth the community has experienced since you arrived? Or is it like having children in the house? You know they’re growing, but it’s not as obvious as it is to someone that hasn’t seen those same kids for some time.

Recently a couple came by the Visitor’s Center who had been looking at home sites here 20 years ago. They ended up being transferred out-ofstate before they were able to complete the process, and hadn’t been back since, but were curious to know how things had progressed. I am not a good enough writer to describe the looks on their faces as we drove through, but suffice to say it was a look of amazement.

From the day that couple left, to now, there have been more than 900 homes built, nearly 80 more under construction and another 50 in the review process today. That is a lot of activity and growth throughout the community and even more new faces. Many are new to Texas or have come from places well outside of our immediate region. They’ve landed here in search of a better place to raise a family, or to create an environment that would serve as a beacon, enticing friends and loved ones to reconnect and gather several times a year under an umbrella by the pool, on the golf course, or on a leisurely float down the river.

For those here already, be it six months or 15 years, YOU were a new face at one time. Since then, you’ve had a hand in the unprecedented growth the Ranch has gone through over the years, welcoming newcomers as if they’d been close friends for years. And for some of you reading this, hopefully YOU will be one of those someday, too!

WHAT PAST WORK HISTORY PREPARED YOU FOR CORDILLERA RANCH?

While I worked for H-E-B eCommerce, I was part of the team that initially started and set up what is now “HEB Home Delivery.” I managed a small team that oversaw deliveries encompassing Central Texas, from San Marcos through Austin/ Round Rock/Pflugerville, and the Temple/Killeen/Copperas Cove areas. I also helped create and implement the processes, SOPs and training for the backend and driver support eCommerce teams. The project management of that role, I believe, has prepared me for the job to come here at Cordillera Ranch.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT WORKING AT CORDILLERA RANCH?

What I enjoy the most about working at Cordillera Ranch is the people. Everyone that I have interacted with are amazing at what they do and are very welcoming. My favorite part of the job so far is being able to see and experience Cordillera Ranch; the scenery is beautiful, and getting to enjoy that rising sun on my commute to work is something special.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST REWARDING PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE?

My most rewarding professional experience would have to be starting and setting up the structure for RX (Pharmacy) home delivery in Austin for H-E-B. When the pandemic hit, we had started a pilot program to be able to make home deliveries for medications to those that were unable to leave their homes, and the positive impact that had on them was so fulfilling.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR GREATEST PROFESSIONAL CHALLENGE?

My greatest professional challenge would be managing/navigating the chaos that was the pandemic and what that meant for the growth of H-E-B Home Delivery — from having to coordinate the influx of new processes that needed to be created and implemented, to the growth of the delivery volume and what that meant regarding hiring/training drivers and getting the necessary resources to make all of that happen.

WHAT IS YOUR SECRET TO HAPPINESS?

My secret to happiness is to find the joy in the “little things” — the small things that can put a smile on your face. They add up and eventually lead to bigger things that can bring immense joy in life.

WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR FREE TIME?

I am a musician and am currently playing drums for three bands of varying genres. The groups are “Ryley Hall & All Ryled Up” (Top 40/Variety), “Brisbane” (Indie/Funk), and “Corpse Hole” (Metal); songs from all three groups are available on all major platforms. To hear the newest release that I have worked on, please check out “Fields of Gold” by Ryley Hall; I am also featured on the music video for this song, which can be found on YouTube.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO SUCCEED?

My friends, loved ones and my passion for music; all those things are what drives me to be successful.

WHAT WAS YOUR MOST RECENT ADVENTURE?

I recently had a two-day music event in Dallas that featured “Ryley Hall and All Ryled Up.” It was our first out-of-town gig and it was an amazing experience; we created some awesome memories.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MEAL?

A love a good crawfish boil. My go-to spots are Smashing Crab and LA Crawfish.

FAVORITE QUOTE OR MOTTO?

“Do today what others won’t so tomorrow you can do what others can’t.”

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE BOOK OR MOVIE AND WHY?

My go to comfort movie is “The Princess Bride.” It was something I loved watching whenever I was younger, and it is something that I still enjoy to this day.

The Wine Connoisseurs of Cordillera Ranch

“For me, it was love at first sight,” recalled Debbie. “I thought he was so cute. My friend Jo Jo and I went in there every afternoon, and I’d flirt with him. You wouldn’t believe the stuff I’d eat!”

Steve added, “After literally weeks, maybe months, Jo Jo pulled me aside and said, ‘Do I have to knock you over the head or what? Ask her out!’ So, I asked her out.”

Come to find out, their mothers had gone to high school together, and interestingly, Debbie’s mother had even dated

Steve’s dad while in high school. It just seemed like something out of a romcom, or what others call destiny.

Although Debbie graduated from Trinity University and went on to become an elementary school educator for 22 years before founding Benefit Processing Services, LLC, and Steve attended Texas A&M before becoming a CPA, now running his own practice, it’s quite clear that their true second love in life is actually wine.

According to Steve, some folks might claim they have a wine cellar when what they really have is a wine room or closet, but not so for the Mayfields.

“When we built our house in Cordillera Ranch, we actually tunneled underground to build our wine cellar,” explained Steve. That cellar now holds a wine collection of 700 bottles, including Debbie’s prized bottles from Scarecrow and Schrader Cellars.

The couple is most fond of Cabernet. “But I love everything

There was a time when Cordillera Ranch resident, Steve Mayfield, wore bell bottoms and had long hair. It was the '70s, after all, and it was all the rage at the time.

from the well-known regions of Spain, especially Priorat, a tiny region that’s coming back into its own,” said Debbie.

What started out as a way to supply their wine cellar grew into a flourishing business that they have nurtured for the past 15 years. In 2008, the Mayfields opened up a wine and liquor store, called Bergheim Cellars, just minutes from their home in a strip center along Hwy. 46 and Ralph Fair (3351).

In 2017, Bergheim Cellars was named Retailer of the Year for the State of Texas by Brown Foreman; in 2019, it was awarded the Silver Medal for Wine Retailer in the Boerne Star “Best of the Best,” and most recently, it was awarded the Gold Medal for Wine Retailer, in the Boerne Star “Best of the Best” for 2021, 2022 and 2023, as well as Best Liquor Store in 2023.

Both Steve and Debbie are proud to have had the same exceptional sommelier, Janet Easterling, since the day they opened.

“It’s kind of blossomed into what it is now. We offer tastings every Friday and Saturday afternoon, and we have people from as far away as Kerrville and Comfort coming in. It’s become a destination spot on weekends,” said Steve. “Janet is like a watchmaker — she can basically tell you how wine is built.”

The couple advocates for wine and spirits retailers by serving as board members of the Texas Package Store Association. Debbie is on the Executive Board and is the voice of the 3,500 Independent Retailers in the state, saying, “I represent independent retailers across the state to help make decisions that benefit all of us against threats to the Three Tier System the state has for selling liquor.” Debbie also represents Texas on the Federal level with her service on the board of the American Beverage Licensees (ABL), an organization that, in addition to promoting responsibility through educational programs and communications, lobbies for legislative issues regarding the alcohol industry.

Also golf lovers, Steve and Debbie haven’t been able to take advantage of the Cordillera Ranch Golf Club in recent months due to Steve’s injured back, but that doesn’t stop them from meeting up with friends in the bar, where Debbie makes sure to order a cocktail made with one of the liquors the bar orders from Bergheim Cellars.

“It makes them have to reorder from me,” she laughed.

Family also plays a big part in their lives. They have two adult children — Courtney Tanneberger, who works for Steve as a staff accountant, and their son, Steve Mayfield II, nicknamed “Dos,” who is a tactical flight officer for DPS. As a result, Steve and Debbie have five wonderful grandchildren.

“We lived and raised our children in San Antonio but wanted more space so we moved to Cordillera in 2005. Best decision we ever made,” shared Steve, who notes that Debbie has always been the glue that holds the family together.

The couple loves to travel and has been to Europe four times.

They like to take Windstar cruises, which are small compared to what most people think of and look more like sailing vessels. They’ve visited Rome, Venice, Nice, Athens and Istanbul, to name a few. Any chance they get, they specifically enjoy exploring the wine regions.

Debbie likes to read at night to wind down before bed (perhaps with a glass of Cabernet?). She often reads trade magazines about the wine industry, as well as novels. She recommended the last novel, which she really enjoyed, called “The Second Mrs. Astor” about Madeleine Talmage Force, the second wife of John Jacob “Jack” Astor.

When Debbie isn’t working at the store, she’s taking care of their two labs, both rescues, and donates her time to great causes. She volunteers to help with fundraisers for the Library Foundation and the Cibolo Center for Conservation, and in 2021, became a founding member of The Kendall County Sheriff’s Office Foundation Board of Directors, which is getting ready to put on their first fundraising event, a golf tournament, on October 9.

“I believe being involved in the community you live in is one of the most important things you can do to make a difference,” she commented.

As if there isn’t enough on her plate, once a year, she cooks a delicious gumbo dinner for the Cordillera Ranch Men’s Group, usually feeding more than 100 men. The dinner includes chicken and andouille sausage gumbo, rice, French bread and bread pudding with both a vanilla and bourbon sauce.

“I have done this for close to 10 years with a group of fabulous friends from Cordillera that come and help,” she said. “We serve and sip a little wine and sometimes tequila to reward ourselves!”

Although in recent months Steve has been enjoying watching sports on TV, mostly football and baseball, as he played a lot of sports when he was younger, he can’t wait to get back on the Cordillera golf course and score some birdies.

If destiny is a real thing, it’s likely lots of birdies and some spectacular wine are in the Mayfields’ future. We hope you have an opportunity to share a toast with them some day!

It’s no secret — I love par-5s. For this edition of Play A Hole, I’d like to discuss #5. One of the things I love about par-5s is the availability of options you have when it comes to identifying your path to the green, and #5 gives you plenty of options.

The tee shot is hit into a fairway that slopes hard left to right into the predominant wind. Big hitters want to land their tee ball in the left side of the fairway so it gets the natural right kick and ends up in the right third of the fairway. If you end up in the left third of the fairway, your chances of going for the green in two are almost non-existent due to a centerline tree, and you must choose to go over and have a short wedge in or play it safe to the left and have a longer third shot. If you end up in the right spot, you are faced with about a 230-yard shot that plays uphill and into the wind … a perfect example of a difficult risk/reward situation. If you choose to play towards the green, a high soft shot with a fairway wood is required. However, that’s not your only option — you

can take one less club, play left of the green, and try to get it up-and-down for birdie.

For most of our players, #5 is a 3-shot hole, and one of the coolest design characteristics about this hole is it provides multiple options for every type of player. If you can find the fairway with a good tee shot, you are faced with a decision to play a fairway wood past the corner or lay it up short of the corner. Again, you have a risk/reward situation — if you hit the longer club and challenge the creek corner, you can have a wide open third shot to the green. If you lay back short of the corner, you will most likely have to play over a few trees towards the green. There is a third option — the right fairway. It’s rarely the best option for your layup, however, it provides a bailout for flared second shots.

Hogs Head

Every great golf trip starts with a good line-up of golf courses. To really put it over the top, you must have an even better group of guys. We checked both of those boxes with our Ireland trip. Accompanying me on this journey were Cordillera Ranch members John Long, Steve Stroud, Roy Sachs, Brad Morris, Brett Nichols, Scott “Dodgie” Weisberg and Michael Loup. Before we dive into the recap, I’d like to say a special thanks to Michael for helping make this happen — Michael is a member at Hogs Head in Waterville, Ireland. Through Michael, the concierge team at Hogs Head (specifically our main contact, Elaine) helped arrange all the logistics of our trip.

Six of us flew into Dublin on Saturday, July 15, while the other two flew into Shannon. There were a couple of hiccups with our trip over there, but everyone made it in time for our first round at Adare Manor on Sunday. The opulent Adare Manor was our home for a couple of nights, and will be hosting the 2027 Ryder Cup. This special place features a parkland golf course and is much different than everything else we saw on the rest of our trip.

On Monday, we took a short van ride over to Lahinch to get a real taste of true Irish links golf, and it didn’t disappoint. Situated right on the coast of western Ireland, the views and golf were equally amazing. Lahinch was originally designed by Old Tom Morris and later touched up by Alastair McKenzie. The 4th hole is a tight par-5 with a massive dune right in the middle of the fairway that you are forced to play over — this proved to be a challenge for a few in our

crew! Jon Rahm won the 2019 Irish Open at Lahinch and stated it’s one of the best golf courses he’s ever played. In addition, Lahinch is the birthplace of Scott Weisberg’s new nickname – Dodgie. On #10, Scott hit his tee shot about three yards left of where his caddie, Seamus, told him to hit it, and Scott asked him if it was going to be OK … Seamus’ response was, “That’s going to be a bit dodgie.” We’ve made sure that one is going to stick!

On Tuesday morning, we moved out of Adare Manor and our luggage was sent to the Perryville House in Kinsale. We took a little different route and stopped at Ballybunion for our third round of golf. Most of the guys on the trip would say this was their favorite and it’s easy to understand why with the drastic elevation changes, intimidating sight lines and beautiful views. Ballybunion is rated #18 in the world by Golf Digest. In lieu of a 3-hour van ride, we opted for a 30-minute helicopter ride to the Old Head. Getting to see the aerial of Ballybunion on the way out and the Old Head on our way in was absolutely spectacular.

Everyone was looking forward to Wednesday — we played the beautiful Old Head. When you look up their website, it says “a breathtaking experience” … it’s a pretty bold statement and everyone who has played there will validate it. The club was founded by brothers John and Patrick O’Connor and opened for play in 1997. While it’s not as old as Lahinch or Ballybunion, the history of the Old Head is special in its own right. After an enjoyable stroll along the coastline with our clubs, we hopped on the helicopter and headed to Hogs Head. After we landed and got checked into the amazing accommodations at Hogs Head, the wise men took it easy, got a massage and relaxed. The young guys were itching for a second round of the day so we pegged it on the immaculate Hogs Head. While none of us regretted it, we were sore puppies after that second round.

On Thursday, we played my personal favorite — Waterville. While Waterville isn’t as flashy as some of the other places we played, I felt the golf course had a ton of character and extremely high shot value. The golf course is right in front of you, not super tricked up, but it required you to play the correct angles and land your golf ball in the right spot. We had another great dinner at Hogs Head that evening and rested up for what would be a tough couple of days to follow.

On Friday morning, we hopped on the helicopter one last time enroute to Tralee. Arnold Palmer said, “I may have designed the first nine, but surely God designed the back nine.” I think everyone would agree all 18-holes were spectacular and the back nine played incredibly difficult with 40mph winds! I hit a full 5-hybrid into the 145-yard par-3 17th hole. Brad Morris probably made the best par of the trip on #12 that was playing back into the wind — he hit 2-iron, 2-iron, just over the green and 2-putted for what was probably the only par on that hole all afternoon.

Our last round of golf was played on Saturday at Hogs Head in a light to moderate rain … for all 18-holes. We decided to change up our format a little — we played two 4-man scrambles. This proved to be a brilliant idea considering the weather and allowed us to complete the round in under 3.5 hours on foot. Hogs Head is a very special place — probably the best hospitality I’ve ever experienced anywhere, along with beautiful facilities and an amazing golf course. Despite the tough Irish weather, it was a great way to finish off our trip.

Between the golf, transportation, lodging, food, beverages (obviously talking about the Guiness and Redbreast here), and most importantly – the company, I’m not sure the trip could have been any better. We definitely set the bar pretty high in Ireland!

ALWAYS PREPARING FOR THE

As the hot summer days begin to fade and the cooler temperatures of the fall season start blessing us with amazing mornings and evenings, it is essential that we prepare the course turf for the winter months. A healthy turf going to sleep in the fall is a healthy turf waking up out of dormancy next spring.

During most years this is a simple process, however, progressing through our second year of an exceptional drought, we are ever focused on gaining as much turf health as possible and then protecting it for winter. Moving into September and October, the days start to shorten a little and the sun angle begins to drop. It may not seem significant to the eye, but the impact on turf is extraordinarily positive. Albeit still warm, we see Evapotranspiration (ET) rates drop and we can rehydrate the turf plant from its daily moisture loss. Once the turf is adequately replenished each day, we then know it can again uptake nutrients and we begin our fall applications.

It seems odd that we fertilize when turf begins to go dormant, but we must make sure it has enough nutrient storage for when it awakens in the spring. Additionally, even if there isn’t significant growth on the surface, the plants are still growing roots and therefore we must feed accordingly. The fall is when we will apply grub worm prevention just as we do in the spring when their lifecycle begins. The fall is also when we apply patch disease prevention, as this becomes prevalent when soil temperatures are around 55 degrees. This prevention aids in preventing spring disease as well.

Prepping for fall/winter is essential but we try to extend the growing season as long as possible by spraying a pigment on the turf to keep it stained a darker color. By doing this, we keep the grass warmer, as it holds more heat from direct light. This will keep the turf growing a few weeks longer and thus slightly delay the dormancy period while we push for more growth.

Finally, although all warm-season grasses are prepping for dormancy, our bentgrass greens are entering their main months for growth and recovery. October is when we will aerify the greens while conditions are prime for a quick recovery. We’ve been successful despite the drought and look forward to the fall and winter months where we see ideal putting surfaces, while pushing root growth for the next summer season. Truly, we are always preparing for the next season.

Welcome to fall, or maybe I should say, “Welcome to extended summer!” Know this: our fall is so refreshing when it arrives in late October. The more reason to recognize the extra burn of calories and release of toxins through perspiration for just a little bit longer.

While many have gone to other places to cool off, they have a plan. In Colorado, Wyoming and many other cooler states, members are off to walk the trails. In that elevation, they are staying active and working hard. Those of us staying here know that it is time to refresh our workout programs, even if it means working out indoors or choosing our morning walk time to be earlier.

The Fall Into Fitness 8-Week Fitness Challenge is well underway, and I am so proud of our member participants! If you are not familiar with the challenge, let me tell you a bit about it. Upon sign-up, each member receives:

HUNTING SEASON: 2023 - 2024

during hunting season is a tradition in Texas that many people enjoy. One of the services that we provide to our members at The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch is helping to set up that special hunt for members, their family and guests. We also guide members on hunts each year.

Hunting and other forms of outdoor recreation have been a way of life for many Texans since the beginning of this great state. With each new hunting season, hunters flock to the fields and forest in pursuit of their favorite quarry. Whether you hunt to put food on the table, for the excitement of the chase, or for the relaxation and pleasure of being in the field on a crisp autumn day, hunting continues to be a popular pastime for many Texans. With hunting season opening on September 1, 2023, we are excited to get this hot dry summer behind us and look ahead to the fall and winter. We have a strong outlook for dove this year, with mourning dove counts coming in 44 percent up over 2022 at 28.3 million dove, and white-wing dove up 20 percent

over 2022 with 11.7 million doves. Teal season kicks off next in mid-September. Most waterfowl outlook reports are not out yet, but we do know the breeding numbers of ducks counted in May of 2023 is up slightly over 2022, which was a really good year. The drought conditions in the Hill Country and other parts of the state will continue to be an issue for wildlife but the late winter, early spring rain that much of the state received has helped the whitetail deer populations and conditions this year over 20222023, which was a really bad year for whitetail.

Texas has a long history of hunting and it can be argued that Texas is the birthplace of modern wildlife management and conservation. Texans can be proud of the fact that our state has long been a visionary with farming and ranching techniques, and throughout the past 100 years, Texans have managed the land to be productive while conserving and nurturing vital habitat for wild game. Abundant wild game is almost taken for granted in modern-day Texas, but there was a time when the bounty of Texas wildlife was at serious risk. Throughout the 19th century, wild game was abundant in South Texas, but by 1910, deer and wild turkey populations were almost completely eliminated. Thanks to pioneers of game management like Caesar and Alice King Kleberg, who were instrumental in developing the first policies of wildlife management in Texas, future generations of hunters will benefit from ample quarry throughout the state.

hunts. From a network of leases and properties to personal relationships with guides for dove, duck, hog, quail, turkey, sandhill crane hunts and a lot more, I can help arrange any type of native or exotic hunt in Texas. Most importantly, I’m available to take your children or grandchildren on hunting trips. If life is too busy or if the thought of organizing a hunting trip is daunting, this is a service offered to our members with the Club. I have enjoyed passing on my hunting heritage to my own children, and the time I spend with them in the field is some of the best quality time I’ve shared with them.

We have some amazing hunters at Cordillera Ranch. If you’ve lived here, you are bound to know a few. Tap into their vast knowledge of experience, and ask them what their hunting interests are and how they became hunters. We all have different experiences and interests, but there is a common denominator with us all and that’s the love of getting outdoors with others who share our interests.

WHEN IT COMES TO PREPARING FOR HUNTING SEASON, HERE ARE A FEW TIPS:

Preparation for hunting can be bucketed into three different categories; mental, physical and gear preparation. Although there are some types of hunting that require strenuous physical conditioning, a lot of the hunting I do in Texas focuses more on

native animals where habitat and gear are the most important types of preparation to focus on. Successful hunters are typically those who put in months, weeks and days of practice and training. Get out there and practice with whatever equipment you plan to use during hunting season. Know your gear and know it well! Know your abilities using that gear as well. That’s a big part of the mental preparation — knowing your own limits. Whether this is a rifle, bow or shotgun, you should be shooting regularly. Ensuring you are comfortable with your weapon of choice, groups you are shooting, and distances you are accurate from is very important prior to getting into the woods, on the mountain or in the blind or field.

I typically wing shoot a lot more than rifle or archery so I will go over my routine prior to hunting season. I will service my shotgun prior to and after any shoot. It’s important to know your limits when it comes to choking your shotgun and the distances you feel comfortable shooting at a given species. Shooting clay targets at our Gun Club is the perfect way to practice for any type of wing shooting.

Mentally you must focus on many things while practicing shooting. Not flinching, breathing, not gripping the bow or gun too tightly, making sure the bow is level, steadying your bow or rifle, etc. Prior to any release or shot, I ALWAYS take a deep breath, expel around 80 percent of the air, then I release or shoot. This mental checklist helps me prepare for the opportu-

nity during season when I have a big animal in front of me and my adrenaline is pumping. Calming down and going through each step will help lead to a clean and successful shot.

The last part of mental preparation is not second guessing your game plan. If you’ve prepared for the hunt and done your scouting, you should have faith in yourself. If you are not finding the animals you are after, keep at it. Not doubting yourself is huge when in the field. When you hunt solo, it is even more difficult to not second-guess yourself. To work on this, you must put the time in to scout the land for animals or use your mapping systems to help assist on your hunt. Knowing where the water sources are, feed sources and where the animals are getting the least amount of pressure will help keep your spirits up and overcome the mental game of doubting your strategy.

I hope these tips I use are helpful in your upcoming hunts and reward your efforts with success in the field.

Finally, get your Hunters Education Certificate if needed. The Texas Parks & Wildlife Online Hunter Safety Course, required for all hunters born after September 1, 1971, is offered at Bass Pro Shops at the Rim.

THE CLUB

Mix & Mingle

Do you know how vodka is often seen as a neutral and flavorless spirit? Well, gin is the complete opposite! It's packed with all sorts of botanicals and herbs that give it a unique and sometimes eccentric taste.

And here's the cherry on top:

Guests will be dressing up in ridiculous outfits inspired by the roaring '20s, complete with feather boas, top hats and monocles. We'll be the funniest, most gin-soaked gang this side of the Cordillera!

Grape Stomp

Beginning September 5, 2023, the Equestrian Center will offer afterschool programs on Tuesday and Thursdays for kids in grades 4th and higher. Whether kids need help with homework, dinner or a snack, or want to spend the time horseback riding, this is great opportunity to get that homework out of the way and have fun with friends. Kids do not have to stay for the whole time – you can drop-off and pick-up any time between 4:00 and 7:00pm.

These camps not only provide a fun experience for the kids, but they also learn new skills, make friends, work on their social adaptations, and see parts of the Ranch that they might not have seen before.

We strive to make sure that every kid who attends camp not only leaves with a smile on their face, but is also able to take along some of the skills and activities they learned on their next adventure.

SAN ANTONIO’S

HOLY ROAD

Among the most challenging are the Caminos of Santiago de Compostela, a network of European trails leading to the historic Spanish town where the tomb of the Apostle St. James and the magnificent cathedral have brought Christian pilgrims since the 9th century. Four Northern routes in Spain (930 miles combined) and the 460-mile Camino Frances, as well as the town of Santiago de Compostela itself, are UNESCO World Heritage sites. Last year more than 400,000 pilgrims took one of those routes, or another of the many established trails, to Compostela. In the Middle Ages, the church began issuing passports to pilgrims to grant them safe passage on the long journey. Today the passports are stamped at stations along all the Camino routes, and allow travelers to stay at free or inexpensive albergues (hostels) on their treks. The stamped passports also prove that the pilgrim has walked at least 100 kilometers (about 62 miles) to reach Santiago de Compostela. That gives the pilgrim the right to a Compostela – a document that certifies your pilgrimage.

HOWDY, PILGRIM!

San Antonio has its own holy road – El Camino de San Antonio Missions. It’s a rare partnership between San Antonio’s Spanish Missions and the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. The Mission Trail that links the four historic missions with active Catholic parishes, and the beautifully restored Mission Reach of the San Antonio River Walk are now official partners of the Camino de Compostela.

There’s something about sacred spaces that draws us. Through the ages, people around the world have made pilgrimages to places where they feel in touch with their gods. The Hajj brings about 2 million Muslims to Mecca each year, to walk in the Prophet Muhammed’s footsteps for five to six days and up to 50 miles. In December, some 3 million gather at Mexico City’s Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe on her feast day. From Argentina’s pilgrimage to the Virgin of Lujan to St. Olav’s arctic waterway that leads pilgrims from Sweden to Norway, the faithful of many religions travel by air, car, bike, boat, on foot and even on bleeding knees to worship at cathedrals and caves, shrines, stupas and hundreds of spots with spiritual significance. Hikers, history buffs, nature lovers and curious tourists often join for day trips or, in some cases, challenging journeys.

to Mission Concepción, pilgrims can get passports for San Antonio Camino. Those are stamped at each mission and the historic San Fernando Cathedral. Those who show they have walked the 30km trek receive their own Compostelas. (You don’t have to walk it all at once – as in Spain, you can walk the route in as many installments as you wish – just get the stamps.) The Mission Compostelas have a practical use as well as a spiritual application –you get 30km credit towards the 100km requirement if you make a later pilgrimage on the English Camino de Santiago route.

The new Camino Center isn’t just for pilgrims or Catholics – it has information and exhibits about Camino culture, pilgrimages and the Spanish Missions themselves, and like the Camino de Santiago, they are a popular UNESCO World Heritage site. In 2021, 1.33 million people visited the Spanish Missions, according to the National Park Service.

Rebecca Simmons, a highly distinguished attorney and former appellate judge, is following her passion today as Executive Director of Las Misiones, the support group for the Spanish Missions,

“Father David Garcia and Archbishop Gustavo García Siller had been thinking about doing pilgrimages here. I saw that Ireland has a Camino society, and they partner with Santiago de Compostela to get credit for pilgrimages to sacred places there. I thought ‘San Antonio was Spanish!' I went over to Spain and they were thrilled to partner with us. Ireland is the only other place that does this,” she said.

“We have a map – it’s mostly on the Mission Reach trails. You can go by bike or car and get a Peregrino certificate, but you can’t use that in Spain,” she added.

San Antonio also has its own Camino group – the Alamo Chapter of American Pilgrims On the Camino, a national group of pilgrims or friends of the Camino de Santiago. Alamo Chapter co-coordinator Susie McCalla says the group has about 400 registered members, many of whom have done multiple routes of the Camino de Santiago. They share support, information and fellowship. When we spoke, McCalla was getting ready for a dinner for a group of Texas pilgrims who were leaving on their trip soon. “We’ll have a blessing of the shells – scallop shells are the symbol of St. James, and pilgrims tie one to their backpacks,” she said.

Whether you’re a pilgrim or a hiker or a history buff, El Camino de San Antonio is an interesting walk in the National Park –and for pilgrims, it comes with a passport. As they say along the journey to Santiago de Compostela, “Buen Camino!”

Today’s mission looks much as it did in the 18th century, with two bell towers framing the entrance, but the original colorful geometric designs have faded from the stone walls. Inside you’ll find painted frescoes of the Franciscan friars and Coahuiltecan natives who lived here. Sunday services: 10:00am bilingual; noon English/Mariachi Mass.

the 1820s is the only remaining example of residences built on mission property in the 1800s, after the Catholic Church abandoned the missions for some time.

San Juan’s farms, irrigated by sophisticated acequias, were very fertile – their melons, grapes, peppers and squash found markets as far as Louisiana. Today, in partnership with the National Park Service, the San Antonio Food Bank farms 45 acres of the mission’s land to grow fresh produce. Another five acres are used to demonstrate historic farming methods. Sunday services: 9:00am English outdoors; 11:00am Spanish indoors.

Founded in 1731 in the center of town, San Fernando Cathedral is the oldest church in Texas, and the oldest continuously functioning cathedral in the nation. It was among the first projects of the 16 Canary Islands families sent to San Antonio by Spain to form the town’s first civil government. The walls of the original church are incorporated into the current cathedral. Although it was not a mission church, San Fernando was closely connected to all the Spanish missions here. San Fernando’s Masses draw 5,000 participants a week. And “San Antonio – The Saga” is a must-see brilliant light show projected onto the façade of the cathedral, with free showtimes throughout the week (MainPlaza.org).

MISSION SAN JOSÉ

Mission San José y San Miguel de Aguayo is known as the “Queen of the Missions.” The largest of San Antonio’s Spanish missions, San Jose was restored in the 1930s. Some colorful designs remain on the limestone walls. The famous Rose Window, a reconstructed convent, granary and gristmill, and the visitor center for the National Park Service’s San Antonio Missions National Historical Park are here, too. Sunday services: 9:00am English outdoors (bring a chair); noon Spanish/Mariachi Mass indoors.

At 7:00am on Dec. 10, hundreds of young dancers in feathered Spanish matachine headdress and costume will parade from Mission San Juan to Mission San Jose to mark the pilgrimage of Juan Diego to whom the Virgin of Guadalupe, Mexico’s patron saint, first appeared. Spectators are welcome to join the procession.

MISSION CONCEPCIÓN

Mission Nuestra Señora de la Purísma Concepción de Acuña is (Mission Concepción for short) is about three miles outside of downtown San Antonio.

MISSION SAN JUAN

Mission San Juan Capistrano’s third church, built in the 1760s, still stands near the ruins of the second church building. Parts of the walls around the compound, the foundations of living quarters, granary and convent are there. A home built in

Mission San Francisco de la Espada, the southernmost on the Mission Trail, was mostly destroyed by a fire in the 1800s, but was partially rebuilt, like the other Spanish Missions, by WPA laborers in the ‘30s. The chapel, granary and some original walls remain. It’s a beautiful place, and its iconic bell tower still stands. The Espada Dam and Espada Aqueduct north of the mission are masterpieces of Spanish engineering, and still help irrigate mission fields today.

Interestingly, Greg and Sue Maxwell are already residents of Cordillera Ranch and have lived here for eight years, after moving from Houston once Greg retired. Although they’ve thoroughly enjoyed their home, after building a ranch in Sisterdale, they realized their current home was just too big for their needs and required far too much maintenance. “We have several friends that live in Di Lusso and they basically said it’s a lock-and-leave and the perfect place to go for downsizing,” said Sue.

“The fact that you can leave for long periods of time and know your house is being watched and taken care of gives you a real peace of mind,” she acknowledged. Being “taken care of” is an understatement. Another exceptional perk of being a Di Lusso resident is the luxury of having your landscaping maintained, including mowing the yard. The final impetus for Greg and Sue to take that leap came

from interior designer, Barbara Burger of Studio Domain, who also owns a charming boutique shop on Main Street called Joli Boutique.

“She was chatting with us one day. She’s the one that got me thinking about downsizing and she pointed out that Di Lusso had the perfect view lot,” remembered Sue.

Barbara is also responsible for inspiring the design, both inside and outside of their new home. A few years ago, she introduced Sue to a home concept in California that fit the architectural style of Di Lusso.

“She always had in the back of her mind that this house would fit our lifestyle and she’s right. It was perfect for us. So, I met with Gabe Garcia at Pasadera Builders and said, ‘can you build it for us,’ and he said yes,” she shared.

As many Cordillera Ranch residents already know, Pasadera Builders is the sole and exclusive builder for Di Lusso. According to Sue, the home that Pasadera is currently building for them has several inspirations of that California home. Barbara calls it a European home with a touch of Texas.

One key factor that swayed the Maxwells’ decision was the added security. Not only is there an extra gate that separates Di Lusso from the rest of Cordillera Ranch, but the smaller lots bring the neighbors closer, and everyone keeps an eye out.The neighborhood block parties are just a bonus.

“Greg is very Texan. He was born and raised in Texas, so it’s a nod to him,” explained Sue. “There’s a lot of natural, organic colors but with eclectic finishes, like polished brass in the kitchen and polished nickel in the bedroom. We also have a double-sided fireplace. We entertain a lot, so the common spaces are going to be very large. It’s just going to be a fun house!”

Although the options regarding materials are specified to the parameters set by the Di Lusso guidelines, the team drew outside the lines as much as they could to create the look they wanted. They decided to go with a mirrored white rock that will create an aesthetic that looks like old plaster. They also picked a roof tile that looks “old.”

The home will be the first to feature elliptical arch steel doors, which is a softer arch than what you’re used to seeing, sometimes referred to as Santa Barbara arches.

“We’re pushing the boundaries with Gabe a bit, but I can’t say enough about him. Over the years, Greg and I have built a multitude of homes and Gabe is the first to say yes to everything. He’ll reply ’I’ll figure out how to do it,’” said Sue.

For example, Sue fell in love with a flush window to counter look in the kitchen, but since their window won’t be a steel window, the mechanics of installing a traditional window directly on top of the counter is much more complicated. Then came the, “I’ll figure it out how to do it.”

Unlike previous builders, Gabe has been there every step of the way and will continue to do so, from design to construction, which is about to begin. During this process, Sue has met with Gabe once a week to discuss challenges and solutions.

“I also love Meredith — I think she’s just precious. She does a really good job helping to keep him organized,” added Sue.

Meredith Windham, who is the Client Relations Manager for Pasadera Builders, explained that when working with a new

homeowner they begin the building process by looking at both the base plans as well as the previous modified floor plans.

“We use the previous versions more as a starting point. All Villas are customized to make the home uniquely yours. All this comes from the help of Kirk Thomas, who is the architect for all the Villas,” said Meredith.

Meredith explained that the specs for Di Lusso homes range from 2,500 to 5,500 square feet and depend upon the lot the owners have chosen as well as the kind of lifestyle they have.

“The trends I’m noticing right now are social entertainment elements, such as “Cheers” style social bars, sports themed bars, and even wine tasting rooms. Not just the cliché digital media room. The common theme of these rooms is the promotion of human-to-human interaction. More people, less screens is always better. I think our clients tend to be on the go or retired, so they want to have the party in-home when they can,” Meredith shared.

The Maxwells’ outdoor living space will include the southern tradition of having a screened porch with fans to keep it cool in the Texas heat, as well as heaters for those cool days.

As for materials, Meredith claims that homeowners’ tastes span the gamut these days and just depend upon their personal styles.

In the end, the Maxwells and the Pasadera team aim to build a home that will stand the test of time.

“I think it will be a classic home,” smiled Sue. “In 20 years, when people walk through it, they won’t look at it and think it needs to be redone. That’s what Barbara must mean by timeless.”

On June 22, 2023, the POA held its Annual Meeting of the Members at The Center located at 17 Old San Antonio Road in Boerne. We had a fantastic turnout, with well over one hundred properties represented with owners in attendance. The Board of Directors and POA staff appreciate the time our property owners set aside to attend the meeting and share their feedback and opinions.

We were able to report that the POA finished 2022 within 0.5% of budgeted operating expenses and within 0.3% of budgeted revenue. A total of over $828k went to the capital reserve account, which equated to 27% of the gross income collected by the POA. These funds continue to allow the POA to invest in capital projects throughout the community such as the remodeling of the Highway 46 Guardhouse, installation of a robust video camera system (Verkada) at the exterior gates and the new, larger playground system set to be installed this fall at Pavilion Park. All are great additions that we believe will add to the privacy and enjoyment of Cordillera Ranch property owners.

In addition to operating and capital expenditures reported during the meeting, a detailed breakdown of the Architectural Review Committee (ARC) process and the number of meetings that occur during the process was discussed. The ARC is currently meeting three times per week to expedite projects moving forward. In 2022, there were 50 new home construction plans submitted and 162 ancillary submittals. As of the Annual Meeting, there were 95 homes under construction or approved to start, along with 47 homes in Design Review. It’s great to see all the activity and look forward to continued build-out of the community,
