Hello
and welcome... ….to December’s edition of Love Saltash Christians believe that around this time a long time ago, an unreported event happened in a run down part of a small unimportant town which was the beginning of a change that has rippled through the centuries. We often talk about the wars and conflicts caused by religion, sadly undeniable, but we could also

talk about the incredible truths of Faith, Hope and Love and what they have achieved throughout the years, both for individuals and for communities. Here at Love Saltash we choose to put our Hope and Faith into achieving a better future for everyone, and we celebrate the tangible Love of family, friends
and neighbours at this time of year when we wish for the best for each other, and of a loving God who cares. Warmest Wishes to All of You this Christmas and throughout 2020.

Happy Scrappy First Birthday to Saltash Scrap Store
The Scrapstore in Saltash has officially become a permanent fixture in Fore Street and an integral part of the local community. On October 13 it was a full year since they opened their doors to the public. Initially, the Scrapstore was set up with the support of Community Enterprises. However, they are now flying solo and have proved to be so popular that they are able to support themselves independently. Having an environmentally friendly ethos, taking in what could be considered to be any old rubbish fit for the Rag and Bone Man, the Scrapstore have managed to repurpose and reuse hundreds of items, that would have ended up in landfill. They have attracted local volunteers to help support the management team. These kind people have been a key part of the success of the Scrapstore, sorting donations, manning the till and tidying the shop floor. Others who enjoy making things with their creative hands, offer their time and expertise hosting workshops using Scrapstore donations and resources.
10
Jenny German, who has recently joined the Saltash Youth Council, said: “The Scrapstore can now offer young people an extra incentive with Time Credits Scheme, giving the opportunity to earn time credits from volunteering, which can be spent at places such as The Saltash Leisure Centre, Saltash Amateur Boxing Club, KidzWorld and Flambards. The concept has been warmly received by local residents and businesses alike, kindly offering their reusable scrap. Word is getting out about the affordable yet professional workshops, helping to pass on valuable skills to the community such as basic sewing skills and crocheting, reusable wax food wraps, weekly card making sessions and handmade Christmas decorations. Many ‘forgotten’ skills are offered creating a “mend and make do” philosophy. The Scrapstore are delighted to collaborate with local businesses such as the Brunel Inn, which is vital in helping Fore Street to continue thriving and networking with the local community. There will be Christmas Craft workshops throughout December, (appointment only). If you would like to take part call 07395332799.

Its almost 100 years since the last election held in December was held. So, it means an uncomfortable we are registered to vote on December 12 2019. Love Saltash maintains is apolitical stance, but as we are all about getting involved in the local community – whatever you think about politics, a winter election should not justify a lower turn out. Livewire is hosting a hustings for young people between 18 and 21 to ask questions of candidates and members of parties to see where they stand on issues important to young people on December 2 at 7pm. At the point of writing there are no other local meetings of this type for the rest of us. Most of this afternoon, therefore, has been spent trawling the internet to find out about the candidates, which has been a lot more difficult than it should be! However, if you are on twitter or facebook you should be able to ask a respectful question or you could try contacting their campaigns. It’s not about finding the perfect representative – its unlikely we will agree on everything – but if we give ourselves some time to think about who we should vote for, then at least we have engaged in the process. Here’s some information to help. Colin Martin: (Liberal Democrats) is forty years old, lives in Lostwithiel, and is a Maths teacher with the CHES home education service. COMMUNITY CELEBRATIONS
On the back of a unsuccessful funding bid, the Saltash Kalan Gwav Festival was pulled back from the brink as local people and businesses stepped in and saved the day. A Crowdfunder set up by the organisers surpassed its target within two days of going live, and further donations from local businesses and Cornwall Councillor Sheila Lennox-Boyd meant the event with a fabulous firework finale could go ahead. Crowds, especially the youngsters were entertained with the Kalan Gwav Wassail with a blessing of apple trees (donated by Lord Boyd) led by Guardian of the Apple Roger Smith. The more athletic wholeheartedly embraced the Wheelbarrow Race around the Catherine Wheel Chicane and Rocket Launcher Corner run by the brilliantly creative Saltash team of Plymouth Redeemer Church. Compere Simon Taylor entertained the crowds with his unbeatable banter with no soggy bottoms in sight at the Saltash Bake-Off with Tracy White awarded Champion Baker for her amazing apple cake! Stu Hannaford performed on stage up to the countdown to the firework finale. The most atrocious of weather couldn’t dampen the spirits at Kalan Gwav. The committee would like to say a massive thank you to all who donated, volunteered their time on the day, took part and helped ensure the Festival took place. Don’t forget that we are celebrating in style once again at the Saltash Christmas Festival in Fore Street on December 7. This promises to be a fantastic all day event with a full programme on page 6-7.
14
Organised by Saltash Chamber of Commerce and Diverse Events, it promises the best build up to the lights switch on and more fireworks.

Fun at wesley Thanks must be given to Bernard, Anne and Paul Melling who organised this well-attended, highly successful day. ÂŁ972 was raised and will be divided between the church and to help those in Mbare, Zimbabwe.
Bernard, Anne and Paul - Organisers Wesley Church epitomizes good old fashioned fun, bringing together young and old in a warm happy atmosphere. Recently the church and surrounding rooms were full of stalls showing just what local people can produce providing a varied, colourful and interesting display. Knitted and crochet items, bespoke bags, jewellery, home-made cards, woodworking, candles and art work were there for all to see and buy for early Christmas gifts. There were Fair Trade products which had been made by home workers and crafts people from poorer countries who use their talents to make items for sale to help their way of life. The catering team was kept very busy throughout the day providing refreshments, lunches and cream teas to a packed hall of hungry people. Mike Hartland enhanced the day by playing the mandolin providing a soft, musical background to proceedings. He also demonstrated Cornish weaving. Downstairs in the sports hall games and table tennis were available for the young ones and older ones who were so inclined. Adjacent to the hall, Paul Melling and Chris Gittins were on duty in the model railway department where model train enthusiasts could drive the engines around the model village.
18
More funds were raised by the young people who organised a shared meal and film night (including ice creams during the interval) with the help of Caroline and Paul Hambly, Susie Smith, Paul Melling and Children and Families worker, Chris Clark. The evening raised ÂŁ250 for Wesley Children and Youth Work. If you would like to explore more of what the Church offers please ring secretary Joanna on 01752 845177 or Facebook - Saltash Wesley Church.

wintery walks with alpacas Alpacas, smaller than Llamas, are native to Peru.
They have been domesticated for thousands of years from wild ancestors, also native to South America. Their quiet nature and good hygiene (Alpaca’s use a corner of their grazing as a communal toilet making them a lot neater than sheep!) have helped breeders introduce them to all parts of the world now, only excluding the Antarctic. Alpacas need annual shearing and the fibre is used for making knitted and woven items, similar
to sheep’s wool. These items include blankets, sweaters, hats, gloves, scarves, a wide variety of textiles and ponchos in South America, and sweaters, socks, coats and bedding in other parts of the world. At their farm in Hatt, Gary and Felicia Sanders pride themselves on the way they look after their herd of Alpacas. They have a calm and relaxing approach to their management, handling them sensitively and regularly from birth, and working with the animals own herding instincts. Visitors often remark on how settled and relaxed the Alpacas appear and are encouraged to meet and greet the animals whilst they are taken on regular walks. There is a very therapeutic aspect to sharing time with an Alpaca herd. On December 14 and 19 there are still a few spaces left to meet and greet the Alpacas at Popham, and

Presentation by Georgina Caro from Plastic Free Saltash
Have a Very Merry (and Plastic-Free) Christmas… CEPL12 are preparing for our Volunteer Christmas Meal, to say a big THANK YOU to all the fantastic volunteers who have helped make our Enterprises a success this year. Without them we wouldn’t be able to do what we do. Q; Who is Santa’s favourite singer? A; Elfis Presley! That’s just one of the “jokes” in the crackers for our Christmas meal, handmade by volunteers. We’re using recycled materials including out-ofdate leaflets and toilet roll tubes; and not one bit of “landfill” plastic in sight. Plastic waste is the subject of a lot of debate this Christmas and The Community Hub and the Scrapstore have some great workshops planned, to help you have fun whilst you recycle. The Community Hub has been awarded “Plastic Free Champion” in recognition of the work we’re doing to try & eliminate single-use plastics in Saltash. We’re working together with Plastic Free Saltash, Saltash Town Council, Saltash Environmental Action, and others; watch this space for future projects!
22
The Community Hopper is busy with some fantastic trips this festive season including Truro’s City of Lights festival, and Mousehole Christmas Lights. If you think you could be a volunteer driver (or passenger assistant) for just a day a month, please do get in touch, your time would be so appreciated and well spent. Saltash Christmas Festival is being held on Saturday 7 December, and we have a very special visitor to the Community Hub…Santa will be in his grotto from 2-7pm. (He may even have a reindeer or two in tow, but you’ll have to look carefully, as they’re very shy…) For parents, we’ll have hot drinks and mince pies on hand, and the shop will be bursting with locally-made and eco-friendly gifts which you won’t find anywhere else. See our details below or call in to the Community Hub for a friendly chat. BACK TO THE FUTURE FOR SHOPPING
If you are wanting to do your bit for the environment, then Saltash has a genuinely local, ground breaking business that is able to help you shift shopping habits. Veg Box Fresh is based in Saltash and is part of the Tamar Fresh group, a family business which has been working with farmers across the South West for more than 30 years. They cut down on food miles whenever they can and believe in the power of buying local and supporting local growers. They buy in bulk to cut down on packaging waste with the aim of minimising anything in plastic. Veg Box Fresh has become a Plastic Free Champion in Saltash for its commitment to sustainable goals. Instead of using plastic trays for its fruit and veg it prefers compostable trays. When plastic is unavoidable for adherence to food hygiene compliance, in wrapping meat for example, Veg Box send out a return box with your order, whereby you send the plastic back to them and they will make sure it is recycled in a traceable local way – not shipped across the oceans with other low grade recyclables. Other additions in the last few months are herbs and chillies, all locally grown of course, and glass bottled milk from Green Cow Dairy, a family farm located in the rolling hills between Liskeard and Callington. This means, as well as supporting local businesses and paying farmers a fair price, the milk is super fresh, cows

milked today for delivery tomorrow, and with minimal processing. To accompany their special Christmas boxes, they will be stocking turkey, gammon, chicken and beef - all of which will be available to order over the next few weeks. And don’t worry if you’re one of those people who leaves everything until the last minute, as they will be delivering Luxury Christmas Boxes - together with all their other festive offerings and delicious produce - all the way up to and including Christmas Eve, when there’ll be limited slots available. The service is designed to be as accessible as possible. Unlike other veg box schemes you can just order once, or as and when you feel like it. However, if you want to set up regular ordering you can order your box to arrive every week, fortnight or month with a subscription service. It’s designed to save you time and stop you forgetting to place your order every week. And because the process is run by humans, and the very focussed Lee Maher who runs the company, then it is easy to personalise the orders by requesting a few extras or cancel the order for a few weeks, if you are going away. And delivery in the local area is free – so there is nothing in the way to help make your life easier! You can find out more and order at vegboxfresh.co.uk; visit the shop to ask questions at Applejack Barn next to Tamar Nurseries in Carkeel; find them on social media @ vegboxfresh; or just pick up the phone on 01752 848735

Protect your property not only for your children but also yourselves by Melanie Cotteril
Melanie Cotteril
Protecting their home for their children is something high on a client’s list of priorities, and why not? Most of us spend a long time paying off the mortgage before the property becomes truly ours.
There are some simple steps that can be taken to ensure that your interest in your property passes to your loved ones after your death, whilst protecting your surviving partner’s right to remain living there. Historically most couples purchase their property as joint tenants, which means on the death of either of you the whole value of the property passes to the survivor. If you want to protect your children’s inheritance, why not consider severing the joint tenancy to own your property as tenant-in-common. This will allow you to make provision in your Will for your partner to remain in the property, whilst protecting your share of the capital of the property for your chosen beneficiaries. Your surviving partner will then have the peace of mind that they can remain in the property for their lifetime, or if you wish, until they remarry or live
with a partner as a couple. The Property Trust in your Will will give your surviving partner the option to move to another property, using the whole of the proceeds of sale, if they so wish. The new property would be purchased half in the name of the survivor of you, and half in the name of the Trustees of the late person’s estate, held on Trust for your beneficiaries. You can also consider going a step further by giving your partner a Life Interest in the property. This is a useful option to create extra income for them, if you were the main pension provider, and you die first. As the Property Trust is only implemented when one of you have died, this is a very flexible option, therefore meaning you can move house as many times as you like during your lifetime. You need only to advise your conveyancer that you wish to own any replacement property as tenants-in-common. You would also have the peace of mind that if your surviving partner remarried or lived with a partner as a couple, your interest in the family home will pass to your chosen beneficiaries, regardless of whatever decisions your surviving partner made after your death. Call Melanie now on 01752 546448 to make a free initial appointment to find out more.

School asked to present at national conference
Saltash Community School were invited to Central Hall in Westminster to share excellent practice at a
recent conference. Organised by PiXL (Partners in Excellence), the school were asked to present their work on a new initiative called BuildUp. PiXL is a partnership of over 1,600 secondary schools, 500 sixth forms, 600 primary schools and 75 providers of alternative education. Together, they share best practice to raise standards in education and to give students a better future and brighter hope. BuildUp works with selected Key Stage 4 students and involves booster sessions in English, Maths and Science, alongside core modules that develop the students’ essential key skills as young adults. Delivered by Lesley Porch, Study Plus Coordinator, the students build confidence, resilience and attainment. The students involved have been overwhelmingly positive, with one student saying:
“The new BuildUp lessons are very useful because it gives you a chance to work on the lesson you are struggling in and gives you the extra help you need” Another student added: “I think BuildUp is brilliant and it’s helping me answer more questions. It’s quite fun too!” Mr Oakes, Assistant Headteacher, who presented at the conference alongside Lesley Porch, said “We were honoured to present at PiXL. To be recognised as one of only two schools nationally as delivering outstanding practice, is clear recognition of the hard work our BuildUp students are doing. We are incredibly proud of what they are achieving and look forward to continuing this for the rest of this year and in the future.”

Just Be News
Christmas Day… is it a busman’s holiday for hospitality staff?
As the festive period approaches, we wondered what a typical Christmas day consists of for our team, is it humbug or hic hic hooray! Tina has to contain her eagerness to wake her Daughter until a reasonable hour, then follows a mint tea with the ‘special Christmas’ biscuits, and unwrapping the stocking presents from Santa. They will then head to Just Be to welcome customers for the annual open Abi, Ally and Kim house Christmas Drinks, and make a start on the ‘fizzy pop’. A traditional feast, and gathering of family & friends will involve Prosecco during the preparations, Pinot Noir to accompany the turkey and trimmings, a Zinfandel red for the cheese board, and, following a few rounds of ‘Beetle Drive’, a Baileys or two to finish the day. A brisk walk with Lola the boarder terrier will start Peter’s day, before checking on the lunch preparations and warming up with a cheeky Palo Cortado sherry. Canapés with customers will be washed down with our excellent house Champagne Robert. Time will be savoured with the company of his Daughter and Granddaughter before battling with the traditional turkey dinner and

finding a suitable wine pairing - A generic burgundy (Pinot Noir) being the preferred accompaniment to the complex flavours of the meal. Given the amount of food and alcohol consumed, after dinner games are unlikely to include Twister, hide and seek or anything requiring activity! Abi is not a traditionalist – the day always starts earlier than they plan as her Mum and Seddy arrive with Prosecco in hand. They celebrate with a big breakfast followed by time in the hot tub and more Prosecco. Time to relax before the children arrive and the day continues with a buffet style feast (mostly cheese) accompanied with a nice jammy red wine such as our Cranswick Estate Shiraz from Barossa. Ally doesn’t get a day off from cookingshe enjoys a later start and then heads to her Sisters for a family gathering where she will share the cooking of a traditional turkey roast with all of the trimmings, assisted by a constant flow of Bucks Fizz. Kim, blessed with two young Daughters, has a more excitable start to her day, armed with a brew and croissants during the opening of the presents. The popping of Prosecco sees the start of the prep for a traditional feast shared with family and friends. New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc assists Kim throughout the day, until the cheese and biscuits appear, washed down with a quaffable Port. Surprisingly, it seems that food and drink feature quite highly on our teams list! Whatever you are doing, we wish you a wonderful holiday season, from all at Just Be.

Saltash Town Band
I was very pleased as a lifelong supporter of over 45 years, and Vice President of Saltash Town Band to hear that in this, their Centenary year since their inception 1919, the Saltash Town Band proudly celebrates continued success.
supporters minds to start again after WW2.”
Matthew went onto say: “However, it was not until 1974 that more serious moves were made to reform the band. This entailed much fund raising to buy new instruments, music and From left to right, Neythen Powell-Jones, Temujin Townson other equipment, and the and Alfred Thomas first rehearsal of the newly formed band was held on 18th June 1975, which is now regarded as the band’s birthday.”
Mathew Thomas the band chairman said: “The band is very proud to recently achieve 3rd place at the South West Brass Band Association Annual Championships, and furthermore, with three newest recruits receiving certificates of achievement for their first contest; under the capable baton of the band’s musical director Ross Farr-Semmens.”
I have to say that from my association with this most friendly and talented band and since the band reestablished itself it has gone from strength to strength under various Musical Directors.
Article by Sue Hooper
Matthew continued: “Saltash Town Band was originally formed in 1919 after the First World War, at the Working Men’s Club in Saltash.
It was under the baton of David Dobson, that the band was Cornish Fourth Section Champions in 2001, winning their section at the Cornwall Brass Band Association contest held in the Hall for Cornwall in Truro. They also became West of England Fourth Section Champions in the same year, winning their section at the regional contest held in Torquay, and enjoyed a well-deserved seventh place in the national finals held in Preston.
“The Band continued playing with great pride, and was musically active until the outbreak of the Second World War, in 1939. “Unfortunately, all the band’s instruments and equipment were placed on a barge moored in the River Tamar and were lost during a bombing raid.
As a consequence of a successful training programme for beginners, a Youth Band was formed in February 2002.
“So the Band was less active, for some years as they did not have any money to purchase new instruments, but it was always in the members and

The Senior Band for players of all levels. February 2011 the new Junior Band gave their first public performance at the Saltash Music Festival. I have been delighted to be present at more recent successes for the band at the Saltash Music Festival, where they have proudly won trophies. They also won the Peter Stephens award at the May Fair in 2011. This award is given to the musical group that best entertained the Mayor, of which the band is still very proud of being one of the recipients. I remember well, when the Junior Band won their first Southwest Brass Band Association contest in November 2012, as well as best instrumentalist. Both awards were retained in November 2013. Saltash Town Band attended the West of England Regional Championships on 11th March 2017 and was incredibly proud to come 2nd out of 20 bands. They also qualified to attend the National Finals at Cheltenham in September.
Following on from the success at the West of England Regional Championships, it was announced that Saltash Town Band had achieved promotion to the Third Section, effective 1st January 2018. Matthew was in a very positive and enthusiastic mood and said: “The Saltash Town Band is looking forward to continuing to go from strength to strength, under Ross’s directorship, and raising funds for new instruments for the training and senior bands (now re-named) as both bands continue to grow.” Saltash Band serves the Saltash communities and beyond by playing at Civic events, local fetes and festivals. They were guests at the performance of Lowena recently and are playing at St Stephen’s Church on December 14 at 7pm. For those interested in joining this popular band rehearsals are on Fridays from 6.30pm (training band) and 7.30pm (senior band)

Saltash Social Club Wishes all its Members a Very Merry Christmas The Saltash Social Club relies on the support of its members throughout the year and is very grateful to everyone who has come to events or just popped by. The main refurbishment of the club was a big investment and still requires a few tweaks here and there. The Club welcomes more feedback to further improve where they can. One universal success was the move to running a Carvery on a Sunday which has proved very popular, both members and non members are very welcome to take the strain out of traditional Sunday lunch with family and friends in a relaxed atmosphere and affordable prices. Other successes were the fabulous tribute acts that
were booked during the year, with a standing ovation going to “The Fletewood Mac Songbook” and “Darkside of Pink Floyd”. WE will be builing on this success by hosting tributes to Michael Jackson, The Bee Gees, Neil Diamond as well as having previous successes back in 2020. We look forward to your continued support and want to thank our staff team ably led by Lesley our Bar/Events Manager who are invaluable. Final thanks and best wishes must go to the Committee who are entirely voluntary and provide their time free of reward to steer the Club forward into the future .
