4. Carve out time for yourself to be creative – whether art and design is your thing, or music, or sewing, or doing jigsaws, or turning a room or garden into a beautiful place, giving your conscious mind a rest and allowing your unconscious to play is brilliant self-care. This isn’t a luxury or an indulgence. Your creativity is part of you, and exercising that part of you can recharge your batteries, strengthen your sense of self, and make a good dent in your yearning for something “more.”

L

PR

1. Cultivate self-awareness – practice tuning into what’s going on in your mind, especially when you feel emotionally off-balance, or you’re facing a task or situation that challenges you. Notice what stories you’re holding onto about yourself and your abilities, other people, or the task or situation in front of you.

R

EA

When you tune in and become conscious of your thoughts, you switch them from automatic to manual. This gives you back control because you now have a choice – whether to continue reacting to a story that might not be helpful or to deliberately swap it for a belief that is more constructive. What could you think instead that might deliver a better outcome? 2. Accept the world and yourself – accepting an awkward situation doesn’t mean you approve of it. It simply means you’re not wasting time and energy thinking, “I wish this hadn’t happened.” When you stop fighting the reality of a problem, you free yourself up to concentrate on working out the best way to resolve it. In the same way, accepting yourself doesn’t mean condoning your flaws and unhelpful habits. It 10 • July 2022

S

6. Make time to meditate – there are so many proven benefits to meditating regularly. It improves your health and sense of wellbeing. It helps your brain to function better. It has a positive impact on everything from sleep to work to relationships. There are plenty of ways to meditate, and the simplest is to focus on your breathing and deliberately acknowledge and let go of any thoughts that appear. Or concentrate on a phrase or mantra that has meaning for you. 7. Book sacred “me-time”– if you have a partner, agree that you can each have time every week, month, or year that is yours to do with as you choose. Take a class, go for a walk. Take a vacation alone. Have a spa day. Go to a library and read. Whatever you choose to do, do it without guilt. This is a gift to yourself.

C

Your mindset is how you approach life. It’s made up of your beliefs + your attitude. What’s going on in your head matters because your stories and your habits create your reality. Having a “mindset of self-care” routine is as important as looking after yourself physically. There are many ways to take care of your mindset, and it doesn’t need to take up a huge chunk of time. Try to introduce at least two of them into your daily routine:

publisher’s note

3. Pay attention – that’s what mindfulness comes down to. We exist in a tiny sliver of “now” that moves along our timeline. We spend our whole lives in that sliver, but how much attention do we pay to what’s going on in the moment? So often, our minds are elsewhere – mulling over the past or churning over a future that hasn’t happened yet. NOW is all we have with any degree of certainty. Decide today that you’re going to pay attention to this moment you’re inhabiting, and give it your full attention. You don’t have to judge it. You just have to live in it, fully aware and present.

O

MINDSET Your Life Is As Good As Your

means you acknowledge the facts of where you currently are, without judgment, and you’re able to view yourself and the situation you’re in realistically and with compassion. That makes it easier to decide where you want to be and put together an action plan to help you get there.

5. Give yourself permission to let go – in both senses. Let go by saying “No” more often to people, situations, and events that don’t serve your mission to be happy and healthy. And let go by saying “Yes” more often to people, situations, and events that are about joy and self-care.

8. Practice active gratitude – it takes just five minutes a day to reflect on what you appreciate about your life, but it’s a life-enhancing habit. Treat yourself to a beautiful journal and make a daily habit of appreciation.

Your mindset deserves as much self-care and attention as any other aspect of you – in fact, it deserves MORE because how you think creates your reality. If you feel stuck and you want to change the way you’re experiencing life, by far, the most effective way to do that and become unstuck is by changing the stories you’re telling yourself. That is absolutely the best care you could give yourself. Take care, Amanda Carmichael

Lisa Bowlin was born to Irish and Italian parents who left New York and came to Dallas looking for the Southern lifestyle. Lisa had learning disabilities and faced a lot of challenges in school, but her parents guided and supported her. “My dad taught me never to give up and face all obstacles head-on,” noted Lisa. “He also taught me always to be honest, even if I messed up.”

PR

In 2017 she started taking real estate classes while she was working full time. This kept her busy for over 80 hours a week. Tony had various jobs that took him out of town at times, and when she was caring for their two children alone, it was almost impossible to focus on her coursework full time. Her learning disability made it more difficult to do the online coursework, as she responds better in person than online.

Lisa has learned a lot in real estate. She is grateful for the mentorship, advice, and referrals of her broker and her colleagues. She learned the importance of knowing her documents and being confident in real estate.

U

Initially, Lisa didn’t think anything of the idea. Then she found out they were pregnant and realized she would have to quit her job since they had no family here to help with childcare while she worked. She kept the idea in the back of her mind, but after a few years, she went back to working at an orthopedic surgery office.

Lisa became a REALTOR® in August 2019, and she loved working with her first brokerage. It was small, but she still credits them for teaching her so much about real estate. In September 2020, she knew it was time to make a change.

“I give credit to my first brokerage for my initial education.” Lisa expressed. “When I started, there were about seven agents. Now, we have about 54. It was an honor to be in the top five for my brokerage! The other four agents included two female agents from Rockport, my broker, and another female agent that has been in real estate for 25 years,” noted Lisa.

D

She had never visited Corpus Christi before moving here in 2010, but she fell in love with the environment and the slower pace. Lisa started working for Shoreline Orthopedics. Tony toyed with the idea of getting his real estate license and inquired about it with a good friend, who was a broker. She told Tony he might not have the patience for it, but she thought Lisa would be great at it.

“After I re-took the test, I told the girl I’d see her again in a few months. She asked why, and I told her that I’d probably be taking the test again. She told me to just look at my scores. I did, and I screamed, ‘Oh, my gosh, I passed!’ I called my broker, and she told me to get to the office right away; she already had a listing and wanted me to go in with her to the appointment!” Lisa added.

O

Lisa’s first job was bartending, but she knew that wouldn’t help her create a life in which she would want to raise a family. She had to study hard, but she became a radiology technologist. When she moved to Houston for a job, she met and married Tony.

R

EA

L

When the orthopedic office went out of business, Lisa utilized unemployment benefits. It was good to have income coming in, and the “extra” 40 hours each week allowed Lisa to finish her real estate classes more quickly. Lisa began testing in March, and while she passed the national exam, she didn’t pass the Texas state exam on her first attempt. “One thing I am teaching my daughter is never to give up, so I never gave up. I missed it by two points!” Lisa expressed. During that same time, she and Tony started an oil field company as well. Lisa was responsible for all the management aspects of the company, so studying for her tests took some time. Unfortunately, when Covid hit, they fell into some financial difficulties. 16 • July 2022

people to treat you how you treat them. I will give my shirt on my back to others. My life motto has always been, Do unto others as you want them to do to you. I have had times where people have not treated me the same way I treat them, but I just continue to be nice and not be vindictive,” expressed Lisa.

R

To Lisa, family and God always come first. Without those, she would not be the person she is today. Lisa’s why is her children. They keep her going. She is also thankful that her parents, ages 86 and 80, are still alive. For the past six years, her mom has been impacted by dementia, which has been hard. But she is blessed that no one close to her has passed away. Lisa learned you must be hungry and go after everything you want. Her dad fell into financial struggles when he invested a lot of money, and then the person with whom he invested went bankrupt. Lisa

watched him not give up after that and continue to fight for what he wanted. As a result, Lisa learned how to fight for what she wanted. “People ask me how I made it. I did everything from door flyers to going into schools. I was all over the place. When you need the income, you are a lot hungrier! I also shared with other agents when I found something that worked for me. I learned that when you block blessing from other people, you block blessing from yourself,” added Lisa. “I am grateful to have my colleagues by my side and could not have done it without them as well. They have been a huge support system for me and have sent referrals my way.”

animals. For Mother’s Day, Tony surprised Lisa with a gift: her first horse. She was out showing properties when she got a picture from her husband, and she could not wait to get home. “Sancho is gorgeous. I love going out to feed and brush him. It’s calming to me,” said Lisa. While Lisa continues to figure out her work-life balance, she will continue to face obstacles head-on and spread her kindness out in the world. “I am not a judgmental person. You just never know what a person is going through, so I treat everyone the same. I work tirelessly for my clients; I go above and beyond the normal. No matter how many things are thrown at me, I don’t give up. As hard as some of the contracts are, I see them through to the end,” Lisa expressed.

Kicks for Class is a new resource that is changing the game for middle school students in the Coastal Bend. Through Kicks for Class, new athletic shoes will be provided for students who would like to participate in team sports but are unable to afford the required “kicks.”

R

Participation in team sports during the formative middle school years has been shown to lead to an increase in school attendance, higher GPAs, intentional interaction with mentors, and exposure to positive peer pressure. Middle school children who participate in sports are less likely to drop out, participate in drug use, or become involved in gangs during any of their school experiences. Kicks For Class co-founder, attorney Robert Heil, shared that his involvement in middle school team sports helped him stay focused, learn about teamwork, and connect with mentors who encouraged him to set big goals and achieve them. Robert has been a Coastal Bend lawyer for over 20 years and is the founder and president of the Heil Law Firm. He has encountered numerous people throughout the years who admit that they took

The inaugural Kicks For Class fundraising gala this spring was just the beginning. Funds will be collected throughout the year, and the first big “shopping” event is taking place at an Academy Sports and Outdoors on August 2, 2022. Academy is opening its doors early just for this private shopping event. Mentors will be matched with a nominated student, who will be given a $100 gift card to spend on the athletic shoes they need for the sport(s) in which they will be participating. Mentors will have an opportunity to interact with their students throughout the athletic shoe shopping experience.

D

Attorney Robert Heil reached out to Gloria Taylor, executive director of Communities in Schools of the Coastal Bend, and asked if there were any resources available to help middle school students get athletic shoes so they could participate in sports programs. Gloria was disappointed to inform him that while CISCB has a program to help students get back-to-school clothes and shoes, there wasn’t a program specifically created to help students get athletic shoes. They were aware of the need, so the pair created Kicks For Class!

the wrong path in life. Many admitted that it started when they were in middle school and were looking for purpose and friendship but chose the wrong crowd. Several confided that they wished they had gotten involved in sports, but their families couldn’t afford the expensive athletic shoes.

If you would like to find out more about giving or being a mentor, you can contact Communities in Schools of the Coastal Bend. Mentors do not have to contribute to their student’s purchases, but they are welcome to.

EA

L

Kicks For Class donations are facilitated by the 501c3 organization Communities in Schools of the Coastal Bend. Thus, all donations qualify as a tax write-off, and the donated funds are also tax-free. This means that the money donated to Kicks For Class can actually stretch further!

R

You can help support our Coastal Bend students by donating at ciscoastalbend.org/kicks-for-class Donations can be made to a specific school district or a specific school. Students can be nominated to participate in Kicks For Class through the Communities in Schools representative serving in the school the student attends. Hundreds of middle school students in the Coastal Bend have never had the opportunity to participate in team sports simply because they cannot afford the required athletic shoes. By donating to Kicks For Class, we are connecting generations and resources so that we can change our future together! realproducersmag.com

To ensure her success, Monica did a lot of research about the insurance industry, what the job entailed, and what she would need to do to become an insurance agent. She even interviewed industry leaders, just like she had done when she planned to get into the medical field, to see if insurance was something she could enjoy doing. “What’s the good, the bad, and the ugly? I think that’s important to learn from others before you start in any profession,” Monica shared.

Her mother is a retired schoolteacher, and her father is a former educator and an entrepreneur who owns multiple businesses. They set a wonderful example for her, and they inspired her continuous success. They also encouraged Monica to start her own business.

Her father also encouraged her to do several things she loved, not just one, so Monica obtained her real estate license as well! “It’s never too late to do what you enjoy doing. Loving what you do and being happy to go to work every day makes a difference,” Monica added.

C

Monica was intentional about reaching out to friends and family when she began, and word of mouth helped make Insure Solutions Group successful. Another contributor to her success is Monica’s organization. Between running an insurance business, caring for her family, pursuing real estate, and managing her Airbnb, it is critical for Monica to be organized. As a business owner, she has flexibility, but she keeps her calendar clear and defined, so she knows what tasks she needs to complete each day. “I love real estate, whether I’m helping someone find their home or managing

Jumping all in has been a journey for Monica, but she remained hopeful throughout the process. “It can seem scary, especially when you are investing so much money. But I have always been very positive and do not try to let negative things get to me,” added Monica. “If it were not for the support of my amazing husband Jeff, none of this would have been possible. He knew I had set some goals for myself, and he encouraged me to take

a leap of faith and ‘start over’ to create my own insurance brokerage.”

“I had great experiences as a Farmers agent. I learned a lot and am still close with a lot of the agents,” Monica noted. “I was scared to be starting all over again, but I sold my Farmers agency. Then I had to figure everything out all over, like whether I would buy my office or build it, and where I wanted to be located.”

She believes that her knowledge and experience sets her business apart from others. She enjoys being at the office and available for her clients. She loves having that personal touch with them. Insure Solutions Group can offer clients a variety of options. “We have access to over 40 A-rated carriers. We sell insurance for everything from auto, homeowners, business, windstorm, and life. We also have home warranties and pet insurance. We are a full-service brokerage,” expressed Monica.

D

Monica and Jeff Wesbrooks married in April of 2011. They dreamed and planned for the future. In 2019, Monica wanted to provide additional options and market differently. She thought about venturing off on her own. When she started her own insurance brokerage in 2020, Monica was scared, but she knew this was the right step for her. She created her own logo as well as a new brand.

“I dove head first. We continued to do renovations during COVID. I put in many hours to make sure every precaution was put in place. We never stopped working during COVID. It was a challenging and stressful year, but we did well,” added Monica.

Mirabal Montalvo & Associates is a family-style boutique brokerage with a shared long-term vision for themselves and their clients. They are laser-focused on growing wealth and are heavily invested. The three leaders, all Corpus natives, have a combined total of 48 years of experience in real estate, and they are ready to help clients buy, sell, and learn to build their rental portfolio.

James Mirabal is a third-generation entrepreneur. His childhood memories include working in the family print shop and watching his dad, a landlord, collect rent checks. As a hands-on learner, James felt he gained more from his real-world experiences than he did from higher education. His childhood hero was a printing equipment salesman with a powerful presence and a magnetic personality who challenged James to continuously improve himself by reading and listening to the wisdom of successful people. James wanted to be in sales, but he didn’t want to have to travel. In 2000, he became

a REALTOR® with Century 21. For his first two years, he worked non-stop and invested in real estate to grow his wealth. In 2004 he opened his own brokerage, Mirabal Reeb & Associates, and grew it to 50 agents. And the next year, he and a business partner opened Mirabal-Reeb Mortgage. Chris Montalvo had promised himself that he was going to be successful. He enrolled in a work program in high school, and at 16, he was a telemarketer, learning how to handle rebuttals and not taking “no” for an answer. By the time he was taking classes at Del Mar, he was working two additional jobs and staying more than busy. When he was 17, his aunt, who was a REALTOR®, told him about her friend who was teaching the fast-track real estate course.

Team members give back in different ways. One of James’ hobbies is photography, and he enjoys taking team pictures for his son’s football and jiujitsu events. He and his family also support various children’s charities, both financially and by giving their time. Chris gives back by building portfolios for people and by teaching people how to invest for the long term. Gino gives back through several client events he hosts each year, one of which includes a drawing to have a month’s mortgage paid! He volunteers with Young Business Professionals, is a proponent of mental health awareness, and supports Driscoll and CASA. “We are a boutique-style brokerage, and we are very focused,” James shared. “We are not a good fit for any and every agent in the Coastal Bend, and we are proud of that. Mirabal Montalvo & Associates is not a onesize-fits-all company. It is structured so that everyone handles their own business through their own assistants. Each team member is passionate about building wealth through real estate investment and helping others do so successfully. James and Chris both focus on investing in multi-family real estate as well. Gino Montalvo loved graphic design and earned a degree in business administration and marketing. He worked at Driscoll Children’s Hospital as a computer tech and occasionally stopped by his cousin Chris Montalvo’s house during his lunch breaks. Gino transitioned from computers to becoming a morning radio host, which was a great fit for his extroverted personality. He enjoyed interacting with guests and callers and was skilled at relating to people and hosting live promotional events. Since his radio shift lasted from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m., he managed the station’s social media account after and was done working before noon.

Mirabal Montalvo & Associates was created by James and Chris in 2007, but the recession severely impacted their team, which dropped to less than 10 members. They restructured the brokerage and served the community with passion and integrity. They refurbished foreclosed homes and sold them affordably. They also began personally investing in commercial real estate, which started attracting commercial clients to the brokerage. Chris invited Gino to join the team in 2011 as a marketing and technology consultant, and when Gino became a REALTOR® in 2013, he helped with the listing side, as well as marketing and leads.

O

Chris became a REALTOR® at age 18 and joined his aunt’s brokerage, but without mentorship, he became discouraged and almost quit. Determined to succeed, he scraped together enough money to buy a house, rent it to friends so it would pay for itself, and then bought another. Chris met James Mirabal and developed a friendship based on shared goals, and in 2005 he transferred to Mirabal Reeb & Associates. His new team member, Pete, became his first mentor. When he was only 20, Chris became the broker of the 50-agent firm, and within days he changed the name to Mirabal Montalvo & Associates. talked during the reception, Chris shared his passion for real estate and the growth at the brokerage and invited Gino to bring his graphic design and marketing genius to the team. For the next five years, Gino worked at the radio station and then came to the office to manage their social media. He became a licensed REALTOR® in 2013, closed $7M his first year, and this year Gino was ranked as a Top Ten Latino Agent in the Nation by the National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals. In 2017 Analissa Montalvo opened her own appraisal management corporation called Montalvo Appraisals.

ICHAEL AND KAYLA DEANDA OPENED CC TRANSFORMATIONS AUTOMOTIVE SO THEY COULD PROVIDE BETTER QUALITY CUSTOMER SERVICE, BETTER QUALITY WORK, BETTER QUALITY ETHICS, BETTER QUALITY WARRANTIES, AND A BETTER QUALITY EXPERIENCE FOR CLIENTS IN THE COASTAL BEND. MICHAEL’S FIRST CUSTOMER WAS A REALTOR®, AND HE IS HONORED TO TAKE CARE OF AGENTS’ VEHICLES SO THEY CAN TAKE CARE OF THE COMMUNITY. LAST YEAR THE DEANDAS OPENED A SECOND SHOP DUE TO THE HIGH VOLUME OF DEMAND. WITH 12 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE IN THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY, MICHAEL DEANDA AND THE CC TRANSFORMATIONS AUTOMOTIVE TEAM ARE HERE TO MEET YOUR NEEDS.

Michael DeAnda had a passion for music. He played guitar and bass, and he was quite creative and artistic. After graduating from his Houston high school in 2008, he enrolled in college courses. However, he found that higher institutional learning through books and lectures was not a good fit. He needed something more hands-on and practical to keep his mind engaged. In 2010, a family member of a good friend offered Michael a hands-on apprenticeship in automotive collision repair. The catch is that he would have to move to Dallas, where this man’s paint and body shop were

He moved to Dallas for two years and completely immersed himself in the hands-on learning opportunity. When he had completed his training, he came back home to Houston and started working at a local collision repair shop, and in 2014 he moved close to family in the Coastal Bend and put his new body repair skills to work. He also met a kind, godly woman named Kayla, and they started dating. Michael and Kayla married in 2015. their REALTOR® was having issues with her car’s air conditioner, as well as cosmetic damage that could lead to rust, he quickly offered to help. He and Kayla prayed a lot about the idea, the plans, and the timing. Michael began doing body work on vehicles for the Harbor Bridge project. Soon referrals were pouring in, and he knew it was time to open his own body shop. On September 11, 2018, Michael opened CC Transformations. By 2021, Michael and his team had provided better quality bodywork for hundreds of cars, and he had received numerous requests for better quality mechanical repair work. Michael opened his mechanic shop, CC Transformations Automotive Repair. He gives a two-year/24,000-mile warranty on parts and labor, which is hard to find in the Coastal Bend. He also actively promotes preventative maintenance as it is better for the vehicle and for clients’ mindsets and schedules. The DeAnda family is in every level of learning possible. His wife Kayla is taking college courses to earn her architectural degree, and their children are in high school, middle school, elementary, pre-k, and daycare. They enjoy sitting down at restaurants and interacting with their servers and those sitting nearby. They also love to play and work out together at the YMCA and appreciate their family membership. In 2009, Autumn heard the Ingleside Naval base would be closing for good. She was offered an opportunity to work at the base in Corpus Christi but turned it down because of the long commute. She needed a job that gave her flexibility so she could care for her daughter and be close by in the event of an emergency.

R

Autumn MacLeod, an Ingleside native, was raised to put her kindness into action. After graduating from Ingleside High School in 1995, she accepted a job as a government contractor at the local Navy base. In 1998 Autumn was talking with her new coworker Margaret MacLeod and was surprised to find that Margaret’s son was her former classmate, Eric.

Eric and Autumn exchanged emails as he was away and serving in the

U.S. Army. After finishing his time in the military, he came back home to Ingleside. The couple dated for a while and married in 2001. They soon welcomed their daughter Sarah into the world. Autumn took real estate courses and became a REALTOR® in 2010. Her sister, Summer Yarbrough, introduced her to TexStar Realty broker Bebe Bralley, and Autumn decided she would dive into real estate full time. Her first year was both hard and discouraging, and the work wasn’t as easy as many would assume. However, by her second year, things really took off. “The reason I am where I am today is that people in town gave me a chance,” Autumn said gratefully. “I am forever thankful for the families who entrusted me with their real estate needs when I was a new agent and have continued referring their families and friends to me. I am especially grateful for the Dendy family, previous Mayor Ronnie Parker, and my Uncle Willie Vaden, along with many others. Being a REALTOR® reinforces the importance of being upfront and listening for deeper things when a customer is talking. This helps Autumn truly understand the needs and desires of the family that go beyond real estate. She wants to give clients the truth so they can work together as a team to create a plan that allows everyone to win. Her goal is to connect families with the neighborhood and community opportunities that match the clients’ interests, goals, and needs. Autumn earned her master’s degree in business administration and marketing in 2012. Last year she earned her broker’s license, helped 80 families, and

Losing her father meant also losing her hero and the man who always believed in her and told her how proud he was of her.

It is important to Autumn to give back to the community in big ways. She actively participates in TexStar’s seasonal events. She also does an annual pie giveaway, and this past fall, she organized Spring Market Days. All the funds they raised were donated to the 2022 Senior Class Project Graduation. In December, Autumn will hold an event for kids, and all proceeds will be donated to Blue Santa. This will be a big and super fun event.

D

“It was an honor to help so many families last year,” said Autumn. “In the future, I would like to be an acting broker with my own group of agents and show them how important it is to put the clients first. Great agents don’t think about the commission check; that only comes if the deal closes. Think about your clients’ every need; be compassionate, caring, and listen! Have a positive attitude, and show them the way. Be the best you can be, and your clients will come back to you and refer you to all of their families and friends!”

Eric has been with the Corpus Christi Fire Department for 20 years and is currently a fire captain at Station 3. He works a 24-hour shift with 48 hours off thereafter. On his days off, Eric takes care of their ranch with the help of his mother, Margaret, who is the best ranch hand in South Texas! Her kindness and well wishes always rub off on me, and she is an amazing teacher, too. When I was a newbie, she would always give the best advice. She believes in kindness and giving back as well. I would not be who I am, and where I am if others hadn’t given of themselves for me. It is a joy to be able to give back and to encourage others to look for ways to do the same!”

About one year ago, the MacLeods were thrilled to fulfill a long-time dream of owning ranch land. This spring, they finished their barndominium and are working on their goal of being self-sufficient. Eric maintains the gardens, fields, and animals. He processes meat from our chickens, pigs, and steers. Autumn loves the feeling of freedom she has on the ranch, especially when she is with her horses. “To me, the most important things people can have are family and their support.” Autumn explained, “Even though my hometown has changed a great deal throughout the years, I absolutely love being from a small town. I’m thankful that new businesses have brought many people to the Coastal Bend for work because it brings REALTORS® more business!
