Color Courage for the brave enough to try

There are plenty of things to fear in life: public speaking, dentist chairs, large flocks of birds, and color.

For designers, a blank wall is full of possibilities, and a fan deck from a paint store is a playground. Selecting a color from an endless wall of tiny paper chips can be terrifying for homeowners. Anyone who has ever had to paint over a red accent wall, or replace a baby blue bathtub, understands that embracing the latest and greatest color trend has consequences down the road. The wrong colors can make our homes feel drab, disjointed, or dated.

Why finding the right color is a challenge. It's not just you, but it is you. Color can be challenging because it's highly subjective. Like the taste and sensory experiences, different levels of color reception and sensitivity in individual eyes mean that every person has a different perception of the same color. Individual people can also have different emotional reactions to color. Yellow tones can create anxiety in some people but drive positive energy levels in others. Definitions of color can also vary across cultures. Red colors carry the broadest spectrum of meanings, invoking power, love, luck, and war. Entire companies like Pantone exist to define exact colors for textile fashion, industrial production, and interior design.

What color is safe?

The overwhelming number of colors available (over 3,500 from Benjamin Moore paint alone) makes neutral tones feel very safe. "Accessible Beige" (SW 7036) by Sherwin-Williams may seem like a great go-to, but neutrals are not as easy as they seem. All have undertones with different colors and saturation levels, affecting their brightness and shade. Carefully selected neutrals are great building blocks for the design and are generally preferred for most major investment

pieces. They are easy to accent with short-term trendy pops of color. Suppose you feel courageous enough for a long-term color commitment. In that case, let me suggest a shade of blue.

Delightful Blue.

John Ruskin, the famous Victorian painter, writer, and philosopher, said, “Blue color is everlastingly appointed by the deity to be a source of delight.” Ruskin lived in an era shortly after chemistry advancements and accidents of the 1800" s created synthetic blue dyes like Royal blue, Prussian blue, and Lyons blue. Before this era, naturally derived blues like Ultramarine were rare, time-consuming to produce, and more expensive than gold. Due to its scarcity and value, blue colors symbolized royalty and trustworthiness. Dark blue power suits often dominate boardrooms. Blue ribbons at fairs demark winners, and the Kelly Blue Book helps determine the value of your car.

Blue is also a color that evokes deep emotions, from the sultry singing of the "Blues" to the freedom felt by the vast open sky. Cool shades of blue embrace the freshness of mountain streams, while warm teal blues evoke the warm relaxation of tropical waters.

If interiors filled with blanched almond, windswept winter white feel too vanilla for your space, select blue as a delightful change to your typically neutral color palette. Both rare and common, blue allows spaces to be elevated but also approachable. Embrace the rich regal tones of navy blues to add a professional feel to a home office. Create classic drama and depth in a chef's kitchen with royal blue. Engage with the warmer side of blue. Use sapphire or cerulean tones to add a spa feel to a bath or a coastal feel to a casual wet bar. With a wide range of warm and cool undertones, blue pairs well with many neutrals and adds zest back into monochromatic spaces if you are brave enough to try.

Smart Strategies for Managing a Windfall

If a financial windfall is in your future, when the day comes, you’ll have decisions to make. A large infusion of cash is generally welcome news, but it can come with challenges and complexity. Here are some things to consider when your financial circumstances change for the better overnight.

Don’t make any sudden decisions. Whether you’ve been enriched by an inheritance, a boom in business, the lottery, or something else, take your time before making big decisions you may later regret. For example, don’t quit your job or make large purchases without thinking through the consequences and looking at the big picture. Instead, study your options so you can feel confident about your next steps.

Build your emergency fund.Your windfall is an opportunity to shore up financial security. For that reason, a portion of your new-found wealth belongs in an emergency fund, particularly if yours has been underfunded. Experts recommend setting aside six months to one year of expenses to prepare for a downturn in financial circumstances. Hold this money in an account that’s liquid so you can readily access it. And, keep emergency funds separate from your regular checking account to avoid the temptation to dip into them.

Tackle debt. Debt is often the greatest threat to financial stability. If you’ve racked up unpaid balances, your windfall represents a great opportunity to reduce or eliminate them. The first order of business is to pay down your credit card or other high-interest debt. Doing so can drastically reduce your monthly expenses and improve your credit score in the process. Paying down low-interest mortgage debt may not be as high a priority, especially if you can offset mortgage interest with investment gains.

Invest in your future. Put your windfall to work to create financial stability now and in the future. Fund your retirement plan with a balanced portfolio aligned to your risk tolerance and time horizon. Diversify your holdings with a range of stocks and bonds.You might also consider alternative tangible assets such as property.

Plan your estate. A sudden windfall is a reminder that life can change in a heartbeat. Take this opportunity to create or update your will.

Assign beneficiaries to your assets, including your life insurance policy. Consider creating a trust to pass your wealth to the next generation.

Spend wisely. Don’t let your good fortune cloud your judgment. Be discerning in your expenditures. A large infusion of cash may permit you to make long-desired purchases, change careers, or help family and friends, but perhaps not all at once. Ideally you will continue to maintain a household budget to prevent overspending.

Share your good fortune. If your changed financial status allows it, be generous with the people and organizations you care about. Philanthropy and charitable deeds contribute to health and well-being while also strengthening communities.

Talk to a tax professional. Unexpected cash can affect your tax bill. There may be strategies you can employ to lessen your tax liability. For example, you may be able to fund an individual retirement account (IRA) or a health savings account (HSA) to reduce taxable income for the year. Make sure you’re taking advantage of available deductions and credits that lower your tax bill.

GRILLED

PORK CHOPS WITH PEACH PECAN SALSA

Cook time: 25 minutes

Servings: 4

4 boneless pork loin chops (each 1-inch thick)

3/4 teaspoon, plus 1/8 teaspoon, kosher salt, divided freshly ground black pepper, to taste

2 medium peaches, diced

2/3 cup raw pecan pieces

2 tablespoons red onion, diced

2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil

1 teaspoon minced jalapeno pepper

2 teaspoons lime juice

Season pork chops with 3/4 teaspoon salt and black pepper, to taste.

Heat grill or grill pan to medium-high heat.

Grill pork chops until browned, about 5 minutes. Flip and cook 5-6 minutes until food thermometer inserted in center registers 135 F.

Transfer to plate and rest at least 5 minutes until internal temperature rises to 145-160 F.

Gently stir peaches, pecans, onion, basil, jalapeno, lime juice and remaining salt.

Add salsa on top of each pork chop with remaining salsa on side.

SPICED PECAN GRILLED PEACH SALAD WITH GOAT CHEESE

Prep time: 5 minutes

Cook time: 50 minutes

Servings: 4

Spiced Pecans:

1 large egg white

3 tablespoons dark brown sugar

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper

1/4 teaspoon kosher salt

2 cups pecan halves

Salad:

1/4 cup, plus 2 teaspoons, extra-virgin olive oil or pecan oil, divided

1/4 cup white wine vinegar

1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

1/8 teaspoon kosher salt pepper, to taste

2 large peaches, halved and pits removed

6 cups mixed baby greens (such as arugula, spring mix and spinach)

4 ounces soft goat cheese

To make spiced pecans: Preheat oven to 275 F. Line rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.

In medium bowl, whisk egg white, brown sugar, cinnamon, cayenne pepper and salt until well combined. Fold in pecans and mix until evenly coated in mixture. Spread in single layer on prepared baking sheet.

Bake 45-50 minutes, stirring occasionally until pecans are fragrant and golden brown. Allow to cool completely.

To make salad: Heat grill to medium-high heat.

In small bowl, whisk 1/4 cup olive oil, white wine vinegar, Dijon mustard, garlic powder, salt and pepper, to taste. Set aside.

Brush cut sides of peach halves with remaining olive oil and grill until grill lines appear and peaches become tender, 3-5 minutes. Remove peaches and cut into slices.

Divide greens among four plates. Top with grilled peach slices and goat cheese. Divide 1 cup spiced pecans evenly among salads and reserve remaining cup for snacking. Drizzle each salad with vinaigrette. ❂

SO MUCH GOES INTO building a spectacular custom home. The most important thing is to have a great team willing to go the extra mile to make your dream come true. This past spring, several newly constructed homes were standouts and this issue we’re excited to share three that our exceeded expectations. The construction is extraordinary and the team of designers and suppliers that contributed to these homes are at the top of the quality list. So, read on as we present Part One of the “Best of Spring 2023” — enjoy!

Director Sam Mendes was a stickler for authenticity in his 2002 classic film The Road to Perdition starring Tom Hanks and Paul Newman. Mendes was adamant that a segment of the movie be filmed in an outdoor location that passed for the 1931 time frame. To be legitimate, the setting needed to be within driving distance of the main character's Chicago home. During those times, many folks flocked to the Lake Michigan shoreline to escape the hot, crowded city. The film crew scoured the coast for the perfect pristine area, free of present day distractions, for this purpose. The 20- acre Ottawa County Olive Shores Beach in West Olive proved to be the perfect fit for the fictional Perdition, Michigan.

IT IS NEAR THIS TIMELESS, scenic beach in Olive Township that Meiste Homes built their latest 5,400-square-foot offering on Dune Drift Drive which has already garnered both professional praise along with popular appeal as a showcase property in the 2023 Lakeshore Parade of Homes. Meiste Homes, which is conveniently located in The Crossings in Holland, Michigan, is where Brian and Amber Meiste have been dedicated to building quality homes in West Michigan earning them numerous accolades including several Lakeshore People's Choice Awards. Dune Drift, done in a unique modern farmhouse architectural style, has once again earned Meiste top honors.

Meiste Homes has worked diligently since 1991 to make their customers’ new home dreams come to life, making them leaders in the custom homebuilding industry. Their satisfaction as a company comes from their interaction and gratification of their clients while relentlessly maintaining a high level of professionalism and integrity.

Betsy Cech, a member of the Olive Township Historical Society, states that the township was, and still is, pretty rural. This is an area of stark contrasts from the trendy enclaves and tony, palatial estates along the pristine western Lake Michigan shorelines to the scenic rural farming homesteads and agrarian inland areas to the East.

Dune Drift is placed off a circular drive on a handful of acres in the transitional geographic rolling hind dune less than a mile leeward of the prominent slip face dune along the Big Lake. The private home is aptly named for its constantly changing landscape of sand, dune grasses and native pines. Dune Drift’s Modern Farmhouse design not only gives homage to the West Olive modern coastal lifestyle but also has rural ties that remain a bedrock of this community where actual turn of the century traditional farmhouses dot the current landscape. The owners and contractors agreed it would be authentic to recreate this architectural farmhouse style with modern upgrades.

When owners Lydia and Alex were looking for land, they wanted to stay near the Lake. “The area had to fit our criteria of being private and secluded to allow family exploring outdoors,” acknowledged Lydia. “I walked the land by myself, and it gave me a sense of peace and calm with spectacular natural sounds. I sensed in my soul it was the right place for us.” She returned with Alex, and he also fell in love. “We interviewed six builders on site hoping to find an interactive person that was willing to listen to our ideas and thoughts. Brian Meiste has a calm demeanor in communicating and is well versed.” Later, they, along with their two active children, met with the Meiste team and felt embraced as a family.

For the next year, Lydia spent hours figuring out the right look for the house making Pinterest boards focusing on both lifestyle and aesthetics. The design for the family of four needed to be functional and pretty, yet fun and durable. After some soul searching, it was decided the farmhouse design worked best for the family’s casual lifestyle and fit the timeless surrounding.

Interestingly, Meiste Homes owner Brian Meiste was raised on a generational farm in nearby Hamilton where he learned the value of hard work. Long days planting and harvesting alongside his father and grandfather ingrained the diligent work ethic which led to his success today and also fueled his passion for recreating homes reflective of his past.

Amber Meiste confirmed, “The modern farmhouse look is the heart of what we love. It brings us back to our upbringings of Brian on the farm, and for me being involved in my mother’s antique store. It’s important to us! We truly cherish the things of the past and love to incorporate them with modern functionality to make a beautiful house a home.” In fact, one of their first personal homes was built in this style. She continued, “Dune Drift’s European modern farmhouse architectural style, built with warmth and old character, fits Olive Township.”

While “modern farmhouse” sounds like a contradiction, the combination of styles serves the best of both eras. The exterior of Dune Drift reflects the traditional with its rectangles, gabled roofs with faux decorative vents, symmetry and large windows. A tribute to a traditional wraparound porch is given with multiple outdoor living spaces and entry porches on three sides of the home. Further, the early farmhouse construction element of a stone foundation presents as a weather edged lower natural stone accent skirt that fits perfectly with surrounding dunes. The interior goal is to comfortably serve as a cozy and stylish family home that prioritizes practicality, simplicity with an organic, rustic charm. This charm manifests itself in the large kitchen and living spaces, multiple bedrooms, beamed ceilings, functional staircases, wood flooring and varied metal accents. These timeless features in Dune Drift meld with its modern luxury.

Dune Drift’s exterior is done in a board and batten style in a custom dark Benjamin Moore “Cheating Hearts” with Smart Trim fascia accented with wooden soffit, raw headers and natural beams complete with recessed outdoor lighting. The stainless steel shed roofs over the windows and porches, a three-stall garage, and a soaring three story front window that looks through to the back of the house present stunning contrasts between the traditional and modern interior appointments.

The front foyer leads into a vaulted great room, naturally illuminated by expansive windows and featuring a stunning kitchen, a dining area and a cozy gathering place with a paneled bookshelf feature wall. Wooden beams, white oak flooring and stained wood ceilings, exude both warmth and texture throughout the open floor plan.

Residential architectural designer, Steve Nyhof of Steve Nyhof Designs, played an integral part in turning the owners’ concept of combining old and new into reality. Nyhof has forty years of experience in the construction industry with over five thousand plans drawn. Meiste Homes has collaborated with Nyhof for twenty years.

“We suggested Steve as the house plan designer for Dune Drift because the owners had a unique vision. We know he will listen to our customers in a very easy manner, while, at the same time, Steve understands the product we like to put out. We truly understand each other's expectations.”

Interior Designer Kristine Kay, owner and principal designer of Kristine Kay Interiors, who specializes in new construction and extensive remodels, was selected along with Nyhof for the project. Kristine and her knowledgeable staff keep their client’s lifestyle, work style and budget in mind as they guide their clients using a four step process of Preliminary Concept, Design Planning, Design Selections & Specifications and Project Implementation.

Meiste Homes has had a twelve year working relationship with Kristine Kay. Amber shares that Kristine is the consummate professional at what she does. “As a designer, Kristine is highly organized and talented; she really knows the potential product lines. She is a wonderful communicator who keeps every stage of the process easy, enjoyable and fun, not overwhelming.

The kitchen is modern in design with streamlined, clean simplicity. The crisp lines of the wooden ceiling, quartz back wall and dark island cabinetry, from Elevations Design Studio, add warmth, while the built-in paneled refrigerator from Bekins, prep spaces and custom cabinetry provide functionality.

The owner’s plant room sanctuary is located just off the kitchen area, along with a laundry room, walk-in butler's pantry and rear entry area with custom storage lockers and bench.

Kristine takes the time to listen to her clients, helping them to bring their vision to life.”

Kristine acknowledges, “Brian and Amber Meiste are a joy to partner with throughout the building process. Their trim and trade crews are able to customize to the homeowner’s preferences, giving a sense of continuity throughout the home.” She adds, “I have known Steve Nyhof for many years and find him very approachable. After getting to know the homeowners, he is more than willing to partner on refining architectural design elements.”

During Dune Drift’s fourteen month project, Kristine was impressed by the owner. “In short, from day one, Lydia, through a labor of love, spent many hours digging for inspiration, sourcing products and gathering samples. She boiled down her interests and brought things back to me to pull it all together, finalize a cohesive design plan, and translate her ideas into the reality of construction.”

Dune Drift has three levels serviced by the open, floating staircase sculpted against floor-to-ceiling windows. The upper level begins at the top of the soaring stairway with a cozy loft landing with a large built-in bookcase and reading area great for children. A hallway services three bedrooms with en suites. There are two personalized, airy children’s bedrooms and one guest bedroom which has an adjoining bunk room perfect for little ones. There is also a fourth room that serves as a playroom. All upper level rooms were designed to maximize the stunning exterior views. To further appreciate the panoramic dune vistas, an accessible upper deck was added with an intimate gas fire pit conversation area.

Off the butler’s pantry, underneath the aforementioned second floor deck, is a covered outdoor patio with an extensive cook station that includes a Green Egg Smoker. An adjoining veranda features a relaxing hot tub.

Lydia’s plant room was designed as her special retreat. While looking for a hobby, she wanted to create something visual that was pretty. While exploring, she found she had a “green thumb” and found peace in plants. While designing Dune Drift, she made sure her sanctuary had adequate lighting and windows; a Southeast exposure was critical for natural light. Nearly 50 plants are tended throughout the house. The kitchen is supported by a well appointed butler’s pantry featuring countertops and ample storage with dark custom cabinetry and open shelving. Although the original Dutch communities considered alcohol “Verboten,” the Fidrich’s Point Resort, a popular destination for the Chicago elite since 1901, was retooled as a prohibition era dance hall speakeasy, located a mere 6 miles from Dune Drift, serving liquor to the local populace. Today, the twenty-one room structure is a venue known as the Weaver House in Pine Bend Park along the Pigeon River.

Even given the area's history, it is still an unexpected surprise that the lower level contains a unique 1920s “speakeasy” bar. Originally such Prohibition era bars were shrouded in secrecy with dim lighting and subdued colors hinging on a feeling of discreteness. Bars were dubbed “speakeasies” given drinking patrons were expected to speak softly to avoid alerting authorities to the illegal activities taking place. Dune Drift’s bar is awash in subtle elegance. In a direct contrast to the historically fitting “speakeasy,” owner Alex included an adjacent modern, well-appointed, high-tech gaming room along with a separate soundproof home theater for family enjoyment. The game room became his pet project that includes custom lit Nano Tiles and gaming metal prints on the walls. Alex’s old school controller collection stands in contrast to the three custom gaming stations designed to pass on his passion to his daughters. The lower level also contains an exercise room, storage area and mechanical space.

While Dune Drift is a bit of a juxtaposition between old and new, the beauty of this combination fits seamlessly down to the details. Little things like cutting edge vintage wallpaper or old age bronze hardware on the dark cabinetry add personality, depth and texture embodying the soul of this classic modern masterpiece. With a nostalgic nod to local lore and lifestyle, the past meets the present to make possible a perfect place for this family’s future.

The U Quartz Carrara Venato Countertops, from Advanced Interiors, features a luxurious and timeless finish with white veining. This non-porous surface is resistant to stains, scratches, and heat. It is a long-lasting and low-maintenance option.

CABINETRY

The Wellborn Alto Onyx Cabinets, from Advanced Interiors, feature modern cabinet doors made from solid maple in a rich deep finish. The urethane finish is resistant to stains, scratches, and fading. This contemporary design isavailable in a variety of sizes and configurations.

CABINETRY

The Wellborn Alto Onyx Cabinets, from Advanced Interiors, are also a beautiful addition to the primary bathroom. Solid maple cabinet doors and drawers in a rich deep color are the perfect complement to the tile floor. This design allows for towel or other storage below.

The lovely tile in the primary bathroom, from Main Street Flooring & Interiors, is Shaw’s Resurgence Isabella and it evokes the look and feel of craftsmanship established in a bygone era. This collection honors a time when homes were fitted with one-of-a-kind accents, lending art to unexpected places and is great for walls and floors.

Double glass front entry doors welcome guests into the home where an open concept kitchen and dining room are immediate focal points. The neutral, ceramic tile flooring under foot complements the dark cabinetry and furnishings. Unique pendant lights above the island and dining table enhance the modern feel. Earth tones in the island seating and perimeter accessories offer warmth to the area as does the live-edge hickory dining table. The space is open to a chic living room with 15-foot ceilings, clean lines and posh furnishings. The elongated fireplace emphasizes the modern feel yet adds a cozy feel.

“It was important to these home owners that even though this home has a very contemporary design that it still be comfortable,” said Fraser. “We wanted to make sure the overall design fit the style appropriately but that it was softened — that the overall color palette was on the lighter side with mild accents and stains.”

A floating staircase with hickory treads also captures attention in the main living space. The natural beauty of the wood grain is a striking contrast to a black railing and spindles. “Along with the custom-stained hickory wood stair treads, we brought in a local fabricator to create the stair system supports and railing,” said Fraser. “The stairs are a true work of art created from just a magazine picture the client found

These CHI doors, from Zylstra Door, are a blend of industrial design and ultra modern — the perfect complement to this exterior. They are aluminum full view doors made to fit any contemporary garage door application. Customization is easy as they come in many powder coat colors and styles of glass. They are a great option for pool houses and garages converted into living spaces as they offer so much natural light and bring the outdoors to your interior.

CULTURED STONE

The home’s tremendous curb appeal is in large part due to the cultured stone from Preferred Masonry Exterior installations are either “drystacked” (installed without a gap and stacked on top of one another) or “mortar joint” (installed with a 3/8th-inch gap between each stone, then filled with mortar). A true, custom builder, JDH Custom Homes has been building unique, tailor-made homes since 2007. With an appreciation for timeless design, the company is open to building all home styles with a commitment to excellence. Owner Josh Hankamp is a trim carpenter by trade and is still today, very much a hands on builder with a passion for creating impressive, “out-ofthe-ordinary” design elements with exceptional results.

It is made of hemlock, tongue and groove and has a custom stained finish. LIGHTING

The outdoor landscape lighting, from The Lighting Corner, features products from WAC and Kitchler. The WAC mini spots illuminate the trees and have a wide variable wattage range allowing your spaces to be as bright or as dim as you desire. The Kitchler path lighting is very popular as it brightens paths and walkways with subtle beauty.

RAILINGS

The one-of-a-kind railing created by GR Metal Works for this stairway gives a contemporary feel to the transitional space. It was designed to bring a modern twist to natural tree branches inside. It is an architectural work of art, custom to this home.

Interior designer, Kristi Carlson of Infinite Concepts worked with the owners early on to help them create their ideal home. “This edgy family was nothing but a joy to work with,” said Kristi. “Truly, the list of exceptional detail, product and craftsmanship on this project make it an absolute, high-end stand out in any crowd. All things urban finds the perfect rural setting — talk about the best of both worlds!”

The grand foyer is a bright and artistic welcome to the home. Flooded with light from an abundance of windows, the space is punctuated with special details under a 14-foot ceiling that emphasizes a spacious feel. On one side, an eyecatching, custom railing system highlights the way to the lower level. On the other is an impeccably stylish home office next to an oversized hallway that is illuminated with 13 up-lit niches, leading to the primary suite. Colorful artwork and intriguing light fixtures accentuate the home’s modern appeal.

“As soon as you walk through the front door, you’re hit with this captivating space,” said JDH Custom Homes’ in-house interior designer, Stephanie Lustey. “From every angle you see something that catches your eye.”

The home’s gourmet kitchen features state-of-the-art appliances from Gerrit’s Appliance including Sub Zero, Wolf and Cove products. The 36-inch all fridge/freezer built-in unit is the ultimate for space and overall food preservation. The dual fuel Wolf Pro Range provides incredible cooking performance. The Cove dishwasher, the newest in the Sub Zero family, features ultra quiet operation and flexibility for loading all different types of cookware, utensils, pots and pans.

The primary suite is a relaxing escape to luxury. An elongated fireplace inset in a stone-look, porcelain wall adds warmth to the neutral palette. Double doors open to a fabulous closet/dressing room for two. The primary bathroom is a lavish space that continues the suite’s palette with a large, beautifully-tiled shower. “The great room ceiling is an example of the different things we like to tackle,” said Josh. “It has a metal frame welded in and is back lit — it took our metal fab guy, our trim guy — our whole team, our AV guy to make that work but, when it’s all done, we were excited with the results.”
