129 arrested in Elche wedding plot Police have arrested 129 people after they discovered as many as 72 fraudulent marriages between Spaniards and foreigners. the arranged marriages were mostly carried out with the objective of obtaining residency in Spain and in some instances, cost the foreigner up

to €10,000. the weddings of convenience were carried out by a lawyer based in elche, who the national Police claim was the leader of a network arranging fraudulent marriages in the area since 2017. Most of the marriages took place at Santa Pola magistrate’s court

and were between a Spanish national and a person from Morocco or algeria seeking to reside in Spain. a complex investigation was carried out over a period of three years by the Unit against immigration networks and False documents (UCRiF) of the alicante Provincial immigration Brigade. the investigation revealed a large number of illegal weddings as well as residence permits for relatives obtained by immigrants thanks to the fake marriages. Police charged the detainees with crimes against the rights of foreign citizens, false documents, false testimony and belonging to a criminal group. as reported by national Police, the epicentre of the network was in an agency in elche where a lawyer had designed a complex criminal network in which different people with different functions participated

to arrange marriages of convenience between Spanish citizens and non-eU foreigners. the lawyer, since arrested as the main person responsible for the scam, had people working to recruit foreign spouses. to do this, would look for people interested in regularizing their illegal situation in Spain and willing to pay large sums of money to do so. once they had the potential foreign husband or wife, they looked for a partner of Spanish origin for each of these people. the next step was to make the relationship between the two seem credible. the criminals would also try to legitimise the couple’s relationship with the town where the illicit marriage was going to take place, which in this case was mostly Santa Pola. at this point the criminals would try to get the couple registered on

the padrón, the local census. a series of people provided, through false documentation, the legal basis so that the couple could be registered and the marriage take place. Registration on the padrón is one of the fundamental requirements to formalize civil marriages and in many cases the padrón documents were completely false, but in other cases they were carried out with the consent of the legitimate owners of local houses used specifically for this Continued on page 3

purpose - and always in exchange for a commission. in addition to the fake or questionable padrón registrations, the group also forged rental agreements in Santa Pola and had the participation of at least two real estate agents from Santa Pola. the last step of the plot was formed by false witnesses at the weddings. investigators said that the lawyer schooled the couple and witnesses on “the version of events they should stick to in order to circumvent the different administrations, warning them that, in addition to the primary requirement of registration in the locality to start the marriage file, knowing that they would never reside in said addresses, they had to create a back story for their alleged relationship so that the fraud in the marriage interviews would not be detected”, indicated a police spokesperson. UCRiF investigators detected 72 marriages of convenience processed by the lawyer. the police investigation was supervised by the Court of instruction of elche and the

RBL Concert Band presentation revocation of the fraudulent residence permits and irregular marriages has been requested by authorities. national Police officers seized several allegedly fraudulent documents, including lease contracts and padrón authorizations, in addition

to recovering 51 residence permits from relatives. among the 129 detainees, between 23 and 71 years old, there are 66 men and 63 women, the majority of Spanish, Moroccan and algerian nationality.

Following the charity concert on Friday 29th april at the Cardenal Belluga theatre, San Fulgencio with the Royal British Legion Concert Band and Stevie Spit BeM, a donation of 700 euros was made this week to natalia Zhezhnyauska at the Ukranian association office torrevieja by Patricia Shepley, secretary of the band.

Tragedy in Guardamar as man drowns while saving his wife a tragedy unfolded in Guardamar on Saturday when a man lost his life, drowned while attempting to help his wife. the deceased, a 43-year-old austrian, is the second person to lose his life on the beaches of the southern Costa Blanca this week after a 72-year-old man died while swimming off Playa del Cura beach in torrevieja. in addition, Local Police officers participated in three other rescues on Sunday, and about a dozen over the past few days. on thursday, three swimmers were rescued from the central beach of Guardamar del Segura. thursday’s incident happened when a 36-year-old woman who went into the sea to help her young son, who was being dragged by the waves. a 24-year-old man who went into the water to help them both was also trapped by the current. the mayor of Guardamar del Segura, José Luis Sáez, has asked citizens for “maximum caution”, since “the sea is swollen and with strong and dangerous currents”. in the case of Guardamar, with more than fifteen kilometres

of open beach and exposed to the east, the lifeguard service is usually concentrated on urban beaches and officials have been warning of the danger for years, with dangerous currents and riptides notorious along the whole stretch of coastline. there has been a barrage of complaints on social networks in recent days about the lack of lifeguard service on the beaches of the region. the resolution of the problem is not simple from an administrative point of view. the contracting legislation does not allow flexibility in the provision of first aid to municipalities based on day-today needs. Most municipalities do not start the season until June 1 -torrevieja on the 15th-

, although they do offer the service at easter. in other words, if during the rest of May the beaches are full due to the high temperatures, lifeguard services cannot be adapted to have personnel on the beaches earlier tan agreed because the agreements are set out as multiyear contracts, with deadlines set based on the hours of service. any extraordinary contribution would be out of contract. of all municipalities in the area, only Pilar de la horadada has a lifeguard service during the month of May, although with much fewer lifeguards than in the high season, the rest will not have surveillance and rescue personnel on the beaches until June.

Web searches in Alicante: Tourism, shopping, weather and sex What do internet users in the alicante province search for? that’s exactly what Webpositer sought to find out in its recent study. the alicante based internet positioning agency catalogued millions of searches to find out what the average person in the alicante region searches for while online. over the year as a whole, the most popular searches tend to be tourism related with 26.7% of search enquiries made relating to tourism and travel. Commerce, business and leisure also occupy a prominent place in a ranking in which hotels, housing and education also appear to interest web users. these are followed by shops and businesses (14.7% and 9.77% respectively), general information (8.20%), hotels (6%), and housing (5%). Furthermore, about 4% of all searches were conducted in english. Searching for sexual contacts also stands out, with almost 30,000 queries per month, 8% of the total. Weather information as a weekend or bank holidays approaches (14,800 monthly queries) is also a popular search - a significant figure according to the authors of the report, since 45% of queries on tourism are about the weather. the survey authors divided the leading category – tourism – into several sub categories such as beaches, gastronomy, restaurants, information of general interest about alicante, rural tourism, campsites, activities to enjoy alicante, flights and other means of transport. Luis M. Villanueva, Ceo of Webpositer agency said “the searches

reflect a real interest in the world of restaurants, both with specific queries for restaurants of gastronomic types (italian, Japanese, Chinese, Greek, argentine, etc.), as well as restaurants with specific locations or characteristics such as downtown, with a Michelin star, with a terrace or on the beach.” Users are also keen to discover the best beaches in the alicante province, specifying while searching certain characteristics of the type of beach they want to find, using search terms such as: beautiful, maps, exclusive for dogs, in the city and in the province, for nudists or hidden. Queries related to general information about alicante other than tourism represent 8.2% of searches. of all the search trends collected from May 2021 to May 2022, four are based on accessing basic information on alicante, among which the weather is top, followed by the work calendar. General information searches about alicante were divided into several categories: weather in alicante (45% monthly searches); official organizations (alicante City Council, alicante Provincial Council, treasury, SUMa, etc., with 22.3% of monthly searches); alicante General hospital (12.1%); appointment for dni alicante (9.6%); alicante immigration office (7%) and dGt alicante (4%). Queries based on “company brand + alicante” account for 14.7% of total searches, with department stores, diy and furniture, real estate, restaurants and gyms respectively. “the data

highlights the importance of having a digital presence and identity of businesses fully optimized” explains Villanueva, one Spain’s top Seo professionals. the survey highlighted the prevelance of queries related to sex services with terms such as “alicante prostitutes” (14,800 monthly searches), “alicante transvestites” (9,900 searches) or “alicante erotic massages” (4,400 searches). next to sex workers, the most searched for businesses in alicante are scrap yards, real estate and spas, with approximately 4,400 searches per month.

Police use drones to catch people tipping rubbish on Orihuela Costa streets antonio Sánchez, Councilor for Citizen Security, has announced the latest results of the special control campaign, which uses drones to identify people who illegally dump garden waste and furniture on the streets of orihuela Costa. in the first 4 days of the clamp down more than a dozen cases have been detected, which are being investigated by the Local Police. once the culprits have been identified, fines will be issued using the drone footage as undisputable proof of guilt. Most of these infractions are due to depositing garden prunings in unauthorised places on public roads in orihuela Costa, in breach of the municipal laws regulating urban cleaning, health and waste management. “a maximum of 1 cubic meter of cuttings can be deposited on public roads, always bagged and only with prior notice given to the cleaning service so that it can proceed with its service,” said Councillor Sánchez, who has asked residents to “comply with the regulations to solve a historical problem that the municipality suffers, especially in the coastal area.

the drone, owned by the Local Police, is playing a fundamental role in catching offenders red-handed and, therefore, facilitating their identification and accelerating the processing of the fines. in fact, the Local Police has fined more than a

hundred local residents since its acquisition. the Councillor thanked the air Resources Unit for its work and involvement in solving this problem and stressed that the effort made to launch this service is bearing the expected results.

Repairs to begin on Paseo de La Caleta

the department of infrastructures for orihuela, headed by Councillor Ángel noguera, will be starting the long-awaited repairs and containment works for the sinkhole on the promenade at La Caleta Beach, Cabo Roig. the work is estimated to cost €47,492.50. once the technical project has been approved, which includes the corresponding geotechnical study required and the mandatory authorisation from the alicante Provincial Coastal Service, then the work will begin. the location of the sinkhole means that any work needs to adhere to coastal law. the repair will begin with the building of a retaining wall in a section of approximately 15 meters in length. there will also be extensive repairs to

the pedestrian promenade. the focus is on solving the instability of the land around the sinkhole in order to prevent the occurrence of similar issues. “this work will improve the

space that has been affected, and will guarantee that citizens can walk this path that gives access to the beach of Caleta de Cabo Roig, safely,” said the councillor for infrastructure.

Reports came into the press office at the Costa Blanca People yesterday, just as the paper was going to print, of a fatal accident at Punta Prima. Very few details were known at the that time, except that the man had been hit whilst on a Zebra Crossing near to

the Punta Marina shopping centre. there were also several post on people’s facebook pages, with some local residents witnessing the accident. this comes on the heels of a cyclist being hit by a car on the CV-95 at the weekend.

the 20-year-old male cyclist was catapulted off his bike and needed urgent medical attention. an ambulance rushed to the scene, where the man was treated for multiple injuries. he has to be stabilised by the medical team was taken to the torrevieja hospital.

Savings rates see the largest monthly rise in over a decade... but four in five savers STILL keep cash languishing in sub-0.1% ‘insult’ accounts these are the legacy savings accounts paying such a pitiful rate of interest that to do so is an insult. it would be better to not get any interest at all. Based on CaCi’s database, which captures savings data from more than 30 leading providers, £418 billion of savers’ money is in these accounts. Major banks including hSBC, Lloyds Bank, natWest and Barclays all offer easy-access rates of 0.1 per cent or less. in this inflationary environment, i would urge savers to make their money work as hard as possible for them and to seek better rates of return for their finances.

if you are looking for a better rate of return for your savings, then Prudential international could be the answer if you are prepared to take a longer view with a medium term investment. For Spanish tax residents Prudential offer the international Prudence Bond, which offers life assurance as well as being fully tax compliant. this means there is no need to put this information on your Spanish tax declaration nor the Modelo 720. By being Spanish tax compliant your capital can grow tax free whilst invested. there are a number of financial advisers on the Costa Blanca so the question is “why

choose Seagate?” i believe that we offer a unique service to our clients. 400 civilians pledge oath to Spanish flag in Torrevieja a ceremonial event in torrevieja saw 400 people pledge an oath to the flag of Spain. the event took place on the Vista alegre promenade in torreiveja and was chaired by the Brigadier General, Chief of the Special operations Command and Military Commander of alicante, Francisco García-almenta alonso. More than 1,000 people were in attendance including civilians, family members and military personnel. the ceremony of the oath of allegiance to the Flag involves civilian personnel who wish to make their commitment to Spain public. along with the Brigadier General and other military authorities, the mayor of torrevieja, eduardo dolón, a large number of councillors from the town hall and the subdelegate of the government in alicante, araceli Poblador, were present for the ceremony. the event was organized by the Special operations Command (Moe) based in Rabasa (alicante). the ceremony began at 12noon with the national anthem before the civil personnel who wished to participate took an oath of allegiance to the flag. once the oath was over, there were speeches and an act of homage to the fallen. once the act of swearing in the Flag was over,

the military band remained to continue playing for a short while. the Special operations Command chose torrevieja to be the first city in Spain to hold the act of swearing to the flag after the CoVid-19 pandemic. the oath before the national flag is legally established in the Military Code as prerequisite for acquiring professional military status to allow Spaniards who,

without wishing to join the armed Forces in a professional capacity, to express their commitment to the defence of Spain. this right is included in the Spanish Constitution (1978) in title i of the fundamental rights and duties, second chapter Rights and Freedoms, section 2 of the rights and duties of citizens, article 30 point 1 “Spaniards have the right and the duty to defend Spain.

Prosecutor wants 5 years for Torrevieja police officer a prosecutor has demanded 5 years in prison for a torrevieja police officer accused of using his colleagues’ identities to issue fines. the case dates back 15 years to 2007 when the police officer is accused of having used other officers’ identities to issue fines to a neighbour with whom he had a personal dispute. the case is being heard at the Provincial Court in elche where at the end of this month, judges will decide if the torrevieja local police officer is guilty of the crime of ‘falsehood.’ he is believed to have used the identities of three fellow officers to issue traffic fines to a neighbour with whom he had had a quarrel with over a debt. the incident was reported by one of the officers whose identity had been used. in its indictment, the Prosecutor’s office has asked for 5 years in prison for a crime of continued falsehood committed by an official in the exercise of his functions, in addition to another five years of special disqualification from exercising public office. according to sources close to the case, the accused officer processed several fines using

Services team carries out pre summer maintenance torrevieja’s services team has carried out extensive maintenance work in recent weeks, including painting and conservation of the many benches along Paseos de Juan aparicio, avenida de los Marineros and Playa del Cura. the Councillor for Quality of Urban Services, Sandra Sánchez, said that maintenance work has been carried out by the Services Brigade since March. Councillor Sánchez revealed that work has been carried out along almost 600 linear meters of seating areas, which has consisted of cleaning up the surfaces and subsequent

painting of the metal bases and the wood. in addition, a number of other benches are being removed so that they can be repaired in the Service area workshop and, once restored, they will re-installed on the promenade. Sánchez also reported that the Services Brigade removed the old metal railing of the Paseo at Cabo Cervera, explaining that it was in poor condition and that needed to be removed and a replacement installed. the new railing is 10.50 m long and 1.25 m high and features 10 cm diameter red pine posts fixed with galvanized boxes every 2.10 metres.

the identification number of other agents of the municipal police force. Supposedly the objective of the fines was to put pressure on a person, who ran a bar in torrevieja, and who had a dispute over money with a relative of the agent. according to proceedings, not only would he have used the identification of the other police officers, but the fines were not even issued relating to punishable traffic offences. the indictment shows that the defendant issued a fine on april 2, 2007 for a car parked on Calle orihuela “and with the aim of hiding that he had been the acting agent” he put two other officers down as signatories. on the 24th of the same month, it happened again. this time it was on a parallel street, San Policarpo. the accused filled out a complaint form again and put a third agent as a signatory. the complainant found out by chance about the fraudulent use of his identification when one day he was in the bar run by the person who had been fined and he complained to some customers that he had not committed any infraction. it was when he showed him the bulletin that the police officer saw that he himself was listed

as the acting agent, despite not having knowledge of the incident. in advance of the oral hearing scheduled for Monday, May 30, the Prosecutor’s office, along with the appearance of the accused, has requested the presence as witnesses of the three officers and the recipient of the fine. in the end, the fines were not effectively imposed, it is unknown through what administrative mechanism they reached the recipient, but the fines were not collected by SUMa. the police officer who brought the issue to light asked local police bosses to take action against the person responsible. however, the request was not acted upon and since then, the complainant has left the force, citing workplace harassment for having taken the issue to court.

GBP/USd started the week at just over 1.2200, and by the time of writing had broken back above the 1.2500 resistance zone. UK economic data has probably lent a hand, with the latest inflation reading taking much of the headlines, reaching a dizzy high of 9% (yoy/ apr), and that figure is expected to go even higher over the summer. however, markets had been expecting a jump of 9.1% on the headline. Whilst there was better news on the jobs front, with iLo unemployment slipping to 3.7%, which is nearing 50-year record. the number of available vacancies in the UK is now outstripping the number of people unemployed. that may sound great, but the belief here is that jobseekers are holding out for higher wages to offset the increase in the cost of living, so the UK could be heading towards a wage-price spiral. this unwelcome phenomenon causes further upside pressure on inflation. So, was that why the pound ended up rallying higher? to a degree, however, the rally in cable may have much more to do with the dollar side of the pair. With markets now becoming far more fixated over the prospects for global growth, worries over a potential recession and stagflation, the worry is that the Fed may not now ultimately be able to deliver on their projected U.S rate hikes (see USd). Much of the earlier decline in GBP/ USd can be attributed to that widening interest rate differential between the U.S and UK. if this narrows, then there will be much more of a level playing field. in the meantime, the latest UK Retail Sales have just been released this morning, and there has been another welcome boost with Retail Sales jumping 1.4% during last month (MoM/ apr), against an expected decline of around 0.2%. that gives the yearly decline a slightly healthier look, with only a 4.9% decline overall, versus an

expected drop to 7.2%. Baby steps. EURO the single currency has been quietly finding its feet, after the big sell-off in eUR/USd throughout april. Recent economic data for the region has helped to underpin the moves, with stronger growth and higher inflation having a notable impact. on the growth side, a 0.3% (QoQ /Q1) gain might not sound like much, but it beat estimates and put the yearly rate at 5.1%, even if the eCB have recently revised 2022 growth projections lower, given the impact to the region from the war in Ukraine. inflation for much of the region is nearing UK levels. those inflation worries are stirring much debate amongst euro-area officialdom, with the likes of dutch central bank chief (and eCB member), Klaas Knot, opening the door to the possibility of a larger rate hike from the eCB at their July meeting. this obviously caught the eye of markets, as a mere 100pips of rate hikes have thus far been priced in so far. any sign that the eCB might all of a sudden become much more aggressive on rate hikes could catch the market somewhat under-priced. this takes us back to eUR/USd, which has moved from a 1.0350 low to 1.0600. this may not exactly resemble a major rally just yet, but much like as we said with GBP/USd, much of the earlier decline here has been down to interest rate projections. if they narrow over time, then this eUR comeback may have a greater chance of longevity. With eUR/USd and GBP/USd playing to a fairly similar tune of late, this has resulted in a partial neutralisation in moves for GBP/eUR. a broad range of 1.1600 – 1.1900 persists, with that rally in GBP/USd helping to push the pair to the top side of the range, but we are still well below the 1.2000 region, which characterized sterling’s advantage in april.

developing the biodiversity project. the international day for Biological diversity was celebrated on May 22, in commemoration of the approval of the Convention on Biological diversity, in 1992. this year, under the slogan “Build a shared future for all forms of life”, the campaign seeks to promote the idea that biodiversity is the answer to providing solutions to mitigate the effects of climate change, improve health problems, promote food and water security and promote a sustainable economy. For its part, local water management company agamed carried out a series of biodiversity projects such as the placement of nesting points at its pumping stations. another project, S.o.S. Sparrows, aims to support the conservation of urban bird populations, facilitating their nesting and reproduction, improving their state of conservation at the local level. the commemoration held on Sunday was inaugurated

by the park director, Francisco Martínez, with a few words of thanks to the City Council of torrevieja, to agamed for its commitment to the environment and to the associations and educational centres that participate in awareness projects in their classrooms. FaUnatURa then presented the results of the various biodiversity projects carried, sponsored by agamed. next, Gemma Cruz and Jorge Ballesta, together with the councillors, antonio Vidal and Concha Sala, awarded some diplomas and commemorative gifts to aPanee, aLPe, aFa, Proyecto Mastral and local schools. Finally, the commemoration drew to a close with a walk to one of the park’s viewpoint where the councillor for nGos and Volunteers, Concha Sala and the deputy manager of agamed, Jorge Ballesta, placed some nesting boxes, created by the educational centres and collaborating associations, in the trees.

Guardia Civil carried out several missing persons search and rescue drills to try out new technological tools and methods, developed in part by the University of alicante. the exercise was the first to be carried out in Spain. Computer and telecommunications engineers from the department of Physics, engineering and Systems of the higher Polytechnic School of the University of alicante were involved in the development of new tools and equipment for Guardia Civil to help in the search for missing persons.

new equipment included unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) and other tech which is integrated into motorcycle and off road vehicles. the drill-exercise brought together more than 200 offiers from various sections of the corps (Computer Service, Mountain Service, SePRona, air Service, Rapid action Group and GRS and Security no. 1). in addition, it has had the collaboration of engineers from the University of alicante, as well as the supervision of personnel from the national Centre for the disappeared, and the collaboration of the

technological Centre of the Ministry of the interior. it is hoped that the new technology and methods will serve to improve police effectiveness. a Guardia Civil spokesperson said, “Locating missing persons alive is a priority. For this reason, the Civil Guard has been carrying out intense work in recent years to improve technological tools to improve searches for the disappeared, such as the aLeRtCoPS mobile phone application, as well as in the development of its own technological solutions, such as computer applications.”

“What is best way to store and use passwords?” Passwords are used across the web for several reasons. Logins to online shopping and social media accounts are just the tip of the iceberg, with more important uses, such as online banking and Pins being the riskiest.

the scary thing is, if someone manages to hack your email account due to an insecure password, they have access to almost every online account and bank account you’ve ever set up. So, being sure to keep your passwords safe is essential. How to protect your passwords • Set up secure passwords to begin with. • Don’t always use the same password – this is very important • Keep passwords in a safe place offline – a dedicated booklet is ideal. • Keep your passwords safe online – consider using a password manager. • Install anti-malware software Malwarebytes • Use multi-authentication – extra protection when logging in on a new device. • Install updates for Apps and system software. • Be vigilant – be wary of contacts from unknown sources. “PDFs – I’ve recently noticed my PC is opening these using Google Chrome rather than Adobe Acrobat eader. What do you recommend?” if you need a more powerful tool, you should use adobe

acrobat or acrobat Reader. it’s the industry standard when it comes to PdFs, and allows you to view, edit mark up, convert, and share PdFs. you can determine what app opens when you double click ant files type. each file type has a preferred app to open it as set in Settings. Search for “File association”. Scroll down to .pdf then choose the app you want to open pdf files. e.g. acrobat Reader So when you double click on a pdf file it will open in the app you have chosen to associate with pdf files. “Can I use an Amazon Echo or Echo Dot in Spain?” yes, you can. i bought my echo in the UK from amazon UK. initially set it up in the UK.Brought it back to Spain and changed the WiFi access only. initially i had a subscription with amazon music but that has since lapsed. i can get all UK radio while in Spain without the need for a VPn. i also bought a dot here in Media Markt.it accepts commands in Spanish or english. Spain eases Covid entry rules for UK travellers

UK citizens who have not had a coronavirus jab can now travel to Spain by showing a negative PCR or antigen test on arrival. the Spanish government confirmed that non-vaccinated travellers from outside the eU can enter the country from Saturday (21st May). Fully vaccinated passengers will still need to show proof of vaccination. the UK removed all its remaining international Covid travel restrictions for entry on 18th March. t h i s included p a s s e n g e r locator forms and tests for passengers who do not qualify as vaccinated. other european countries followed suit, with austria, Greece, Switzerland, Bulgaria, Croatia, Lithuania, Sweden, Serbia, Slovenia and Slovakia no longer having any Covid travel restrictions for visitors. Previously, heightened

restrictions meant UK travellers were only allowed to enter Spain with vaccine certification or proof of recovery from the virus. on Saturday, Spanish tourism minister Reyes Maroto said the “new phase of the pandemic” meant the country was able to relax the rules by equating noneU travellers with those of the eU and Schengenassociated countries. “this is excellent news, much awaited by the tourism sector,” said Ms Maroto, adding: “Spain is becoming one of the most desired destinations in the world.” in 2019, 18 million visitors from the UK arrived at Spanish airports - and the Spanish want to see the same numbers hitting their beaches again this year. demand is high for holiday destinations across europe, with airlines and tour operators reporting surges for summer sun bookings almost everywhere.

But Spain wants to retain its crown as Britain’s favourite, and to do that it has to be open to everyone. that’s why they’ve followed european holiday rivals and started allowing unvaccinated travellers - with a negative test. More holidaymakers means more euros arriving and that’s good for the Spanish economy, where tourism is crucial. From 21st May, all visitors entering Spain at air or sea borders, wherever they are travelling from, must provide one of the following three certificates: • Vaccination certificate meeting the government’s requirements • A negative test certificate (PCR or similar) • Certificate of recovery at least 11 days after testing positive Spain accepts the UK’s proof of Covid-19 vaccination record, either digitally, or as a printed download. PCR tests must be carried out in the 72 hours prior to departure to Spain or an antigen test in the 24 hours prior to departure. Proof of recovery certificates will be valid for 180 days from the date of the positive test. Children under the age of 12 are exempt from submitting any type of certificate.

Benidorm Fest 2023

eurovision 2022 might just have ended, but in Spain plans are already being put in place around next years musical extravaganza. as the nation processes Chanel’s bronze placing - the best Spain has done since 1995 Spanish broadcaster RtVe and the Generalitat Valenciana have already given fans what they needed: new details about Benidorm Fest 2023. Benidorm Fest 2023 was confirmed in February, just days after Benidorm Fest 2022 took place, and Spain will organise a bigger, better and even more memorable second edition. the Generalitat Valenciana is working hard to ensure that the next edition of Benidorm Fest has maximum impact — both for fans and the host city. the plan comes with two big improvements. First, Palau L’illa de Benidorm – the host venue – will be expanded to welcome more fans to the live shows. Second, the Generalitat will establish the Benidorm Fest Village, a special space where fans can meet and experience

eurovision with a variety of different events - just like the eurovision Village, but with distinct Benidorm flair. according to the General director of tourism, herick Campos, the Generalitat will work to boost the promotion of the Festival in specialised fairs

and at LGtBi music and tourism events. Because they don’t expect new restrictions or limits results from Covid, Benidorm Fest will become a proper week-long celebration with more musical performances and cultural events across the city, allowing visitors to fully enjoy the Festival. as eva Mora – the new hod of Spain – commented back in February, there’s already excitement for Benidorm Fest 2023. that means the team will have had extra time

for planning and execution, allowing for plenty of tweaks and amendments to last year’s formula. Benidorm Fest was a huge ratings achievement for the Spanish broadcaster RtVe. the final that saw Chanel reach the top drew 2.97 million viewers. that represents a 21 percent share of the tV viewing audience. For comparison, RtVe typically earns a 7 to 8 percent share. accounting for all three Benidorm Fest 2022 shows, the Festival drew nearly 10.8 million viewers. Likewise, RtVe felt the love during eurovision this year. From north to south, west to east, 6.8 million viewers watched this year’s eurovision 2022 in Spain – that’s the 5th highest rating in their history. despite not reaching the eSC 2002 ratings achieved in the year of ot and Rosa López, RtVe still managed an impressive 50.8 percent share and about 15 million people connected with turin at some point during the show. What’s more, Chanel’s “SloMo” performance drew 7.26 million people to the tV.

Derry Girls ends with iconic cameo The third season of Derry Girls has welcomed a few famous faces, including Liam Neeson and a Peaky Blinders star, but there was a surprising cameo in the last few minutes of Wednesday night’s hour-long special. The end of the episode skipped ahead to the present day in New York as a mailman walked up to an apartment to deliver a lost letter from the 1990s that Orla (Louisa Harland) and Erin (Saoirse-Monica Jackson) had sent. As the door opens, the letter is handed to activist and writer Chelsea Clinton, the daughter of former President of the United States Bill Clinton and Hilary Clinton. Chelsea’s appearance harked back to The President episode in season two when the girls wrote to Chelsea in 1995 ahead of her visit to Northern Ireland with her parents.

In the sweet letter the girls offered to hang out with Chelsea, help her with her love life and complimented her on her fabulous hair. Chelsea has admitted she is “a big fan” of the series and “honoured” to be apart of the show that gives people a better understanding of the history of Northern Ireland. “Thanks to Lisa McGee’s incredible talent, and that of the wonderful cast and crew of Derry Girls, people around the world have been able to better understand and relate to a hugely significant and important period of history in Northern Ireland and for the world,” Chelsea said. Fans were “floored” by the cameo, one viewer took to Twitter and wrote, “Ok, getting Chelsea Clinton is iconic” as another added: “Oh my Derry Girls can’t believe you had Chelsea Clinton in the final episode!”

Price of butane gas cylinders soars in Spain Following eight consecutive increases in the last year, the cost of a butane cylinder is now 19.55 euros after the government signed into law another 4.91 per cent increase. The price climb has now reached its third consecutive historical maximum, costing 19.55 euro, 40 perent more than a year ago (5.59 euro), according to the Facua consumer association. The new price is the most expensive Spain has ever seen.

In November 2021, when a cylinder cost 16.92 euros, the government insisted a price increase was justified because the cost of gas had increased on top of rising freight costs and the depreciation of the euro against the dollar. But in just one year, the price of the cylinder most used in Spain – a cylinder that weights 12.5 kilograms when full - has

increased from 13.3 euros. Consumer affairs organisations warn that recent improvements to social security benefits for vulnerable people will not be enough to offset the increase.

Spain first European country to introduce paid ‘menstrual leave’ Spain’s government has greenlit plans to allow women to take unlimited paid “menstrual leave” from work, in a European first. The proposal endorsed by ministers is part of a broader package on reproductive rights that includes allowing teenagers to seek an abortion from the age of 16 without the need to get their parent or guardian’s consent. The government has agreed on the draft law which will still need to be passed by Spain’s parliament, a legislative process that could take several months. Leaked reports last week suggested three to five days

would be offered to those experiencing severe period pain, but the government announced there will be no limits placed on the number of days a woman can take. Under the agreed plans, women would need to obtain a doctor’s note, with leave being paid by the country’s social security system from their first day off work. Spain’s equality minister Irene Montero, an outspoken feminist in the leftwing government, said it was time for government institutions to “discard taboos, stigmas and guilt regarding women’s bodies”.

“The days of (women) going to work in pain are over,” Montero told a press conference that gave details of the draft health bill following a cabinet meeting. But the issue is proving controversial. Politicians including those within Spain’s ruling coalition - and trade unions have been divided over a plan some fear could backfire and stigmatise women in the workplace. Worldwide, menstrual leave is currently offered only in a small number of countries including Japan, Taiwan, Indonesia, South Korea and Zambia.

Spain removes Covid control measures at land borders The Spanish authorities have finally taken another step towards the removal of Coronavirus entry restrictions, lifting the health controls performed at the land borders with France for over two years now, starting from last Thursday (19th May). The decision has been announced by the Spanish Ministry of Health, which published an order in Spain’s Official Gazette (BOE), making ineffective an order issued in March 2020, that had established health controls at the land borders with France. “…taking into account the epidemiological situation in both countries and the current impact of the measure, it is considered appropriate to revoke the health control measures for people from France who arrive in Spain by land,” reads the order, signed on 13th May. According to the decision, travellers entering Spain through the land borders with France are no longer required to present proof of COVID-19 vaccination, recovery from the virus, or negative test results, in order to be able to enter Spain.

Previously, all travellers aged 12 and older had to present one of these three documents, meeting the criteria set by the Spanish authorities, in order to be able to enter Spain from France. Aside from France, there are no health checks at the land borders between Spain and Portugal either. On Monday, 17th May,

Spain also started the gradual reopening of borders between its African enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla with Morocco by permitting the citizens and residents of the EU and those authorised to move within the Schengen area to enter from Morocco through the El Tarajal and Beni Enzar border crossings. From 31st May, cross-border workers will also be permitted to move through these two

border checkpoints, while later, gradually, more groups will be eligible to do so. “In both categories, to access Ceuta and Melilla, it will be essential to meet the health requirements established by the Ministry of Health for these authorised border crossing points,” the Ministry has noted regarding explaining the conditions of entry through these border checkpoints. However, regarding other entry restrictions at air and sea borders, which were set to remain effective until 15th May, they have been extended for one more month. According to the Spanish Ministry, restrictions for entering Spain will be prolonged until 15th June due to the current COVID-19 situation, which ‘requires’ the country to continue such measures. Spain has also refused to lift the obligation to wear a mask during flights to its territory, in spite of a decision of the EU Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and the Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) that masks should no longer be mandatory for travellers in flights to EU countries.

No terrace tax for Orihuela Costa bars Bars and restaurants in Orihuela Costa will benefit from a further suspension of the ‘Terrace Tax’ until 31st December 2023. The move has been granted by the new municipal coalition government as form part of several measures being brought to the May council meeting. The terrace tax is usually paid by establishments that use public roads or pavements for chairs and tables to give them addition terrace space. The move is estimated to cost the local government around 200,000 euros in lost revenue. Among the other measures announced was the addition of a pedestrian bridge over the AP-7 between La Regia and Cabo Roig. At present the road bridge caters solely for vehicles

and people have to take their life in their hands squeezing between the railings and the traffic lanes. The new path will provide safe passage for people and bicycles at a cost of just over 86,500 euro. The complete package of improvements announced by Mayor Carolina Gracia is worth 1.4 million euros and has been

created in order to ‘unblock municipal management and reactivate the local economy’. Other initiatives include a €664,000 investment in the ‘Men’s Room’ within the Orihuela Archaeological Museum and a €420,000 renovation of the Moquita and Pando Twin Waterwheels, just outside Desamparados.

Italian customer calls Police over €2 coffee A coffee bar in Florence has been fined €1,000 after a customer got steamed up over the price of a humble cup of espresso. The customer called police after being charged €2 for his coffee – a decaffeinated one, at that – at Ditta Artigianale in the centre of the Tuscan city.

The man complained that the price was not displayed on a menu behind the counter. It was this error that landed the bar, which is celebrated for its coffee-making and has won winning several competitions, in trouble. Francesco Sanapo, the owner

of Ditta Artigianale, vented about the fine on social media and defended his coffee, which he said comes from a small plantation in Mexico and “is prepared with great care by my baristas”. He argued that the price of the coffee was displayed on a digital menu.

Annoying restaurant habits We’ve all been witness to tyrant patrons as they sat near us or were even dining across the table from us, but there are some things you yourself could be doing unwittingly that are annoying the person handling your food - which is, of course, the last person you want to annoy.

Young farmers criticise Ministry of Agriculture over olive oil plan Spain’s Association of Young Farmers and Ranchers (Asaja) has voiced its criticism of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food’s (MAPA) after a new financial aid plan was revealed which would support the development of the country’s traditional olive growers. Asaja said the funding to make the country’s traditional groves more competitive is “blurred and ridiculous” because it targets producer organizations and cooperatives rather than indvidual growers. Asaja made these assertions after reviewing the ministry’s plan and concluding that it was not fit for purpose. The organization also prepared a series of proposals it intends to send to the ministry to help improve the interventions in the sector. In their proposal, Asaja

emphasized the need for the ministry to reconsider its strategy for financial aid. Chief among these is increasing the amount of money dedicated to the project. Asaja said the proposed €30 million is insufficient. “Given the complexity of its application, we are very much afraid this help will end up being lost since, in addition to being little money, it will not reach those who really need it,” Asaja said. Blanca Corroto, the president of Asaja-Toledo, told Agropopular that the €30 million “is an insignificant amount of money.” “As long as the traditional olive groves are not financially aided, they will disappear completely,” she added. “We were waiting for some aid to this sector to survive.”

According to data from Juan Vilar Strategic Consultants, Spain has nearly 1.9 million hectares of traditional olive groves, which make up slightly more than 70 percent of all olive groves in the country. The sector employs about 350,000 workers and generates €32 million in wages annually, making it a highly valuable industry. In the new Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), the European Union and MAPA pledged to support the traditional olive grove in recognition of the critical role the sector plays in the olive oil industry. Last June, Minister of Agriculture Luis Planas told the senate, “we will develop a specific programme because it is very important for the sector’s ability to compete.”

Skipping the greeting People in the restaurant industry are often treated like robots who only take orders, but it can be pretty dehumanising if the first thing you say is your drink order. A little hello and a smile go a long way. Be aware When the plates arrive at the table, there’s always someone not paying attention while the server is trying to figure out where to set their hot plate down without burning anyone. Don’t be that person! Control your children Restaurants are actually not a nursery and kids can’t just run around the restaurant ripping open sugar packets and wreaking havoc. Last-minute munchers You’ll probably be able to hear the groans from the back if you enter a restaurant when it’s close to closing time.

Assuming the server remembers you We’re all the main character in our stories, but the fact is that servers meet dozens of people every day and give everyone friendly service. Don’t be offended if they don’t remember you favourite wine or dish. Complain to the boss Servers do not make the rules, they just have to be the smiling face that accepts the brunt of them. If it really bothers you, write a letter to the owners. Your server isn’t responsible if prices have gone up, if your usual dish isn’t as good or they have sold out of something you wanted to order. Snapping or whistling at servers They’re not animals, and it’s so incredibly rude to snap or

whistle at servers that it’s hard to believe it still happens...but it does. Name dropping Some entitled customers will say they know the owner of the restaurant - even if they just learned the name online - to get served first or to get a deal. But the staff know the owner even better, so unless you make a special arrangement with the owner personally, don’t name drop. Asking for strong drinks or extra freebies You’re putting servers in an awkward position—the requests often aren’t even in their power—and that little wink and tiny tip you’re offering really aren’t enough to convince a server to break the rules for you.

Trial that could eliminate food allergies forever A £2.2 million trial into food allergies has been launched in the UK after a teenager died from an allergic reaction to a baguette. The oral immunotherapy (OIT) trial, which will be primarily led by the University of Southampton and University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, has been spearheaded by Tanya and Nadim EdnanLaperouse. They are the parents of Natasha EdnanLaperouse, who died after she suffered a severe allergic reaction to sesame in a Pret baguette. The teenager was just 15 when she ate the artichoke, olive and tapenade baguette from the store at Heathrow airport before a flight to Nice with her father. The sandwich did not have any allergen advice on its wrapper as it was made on the premises, so this was not required by law. The OIT trial, which is being funded by the Natasha Allergy Research Foundation, will investigate whether commonly available peanut and milk products, taken under medical supervision, can be used as a treatment for people with food allergies. The trial hopes to show that people with food allergies

may no longer have to avoid foods with small amounts of allergens due to production - and mean they may also be able to eat popular foods like cakes, curries and pizza. In all, the study will recruit 216 people between the ages of three and 23 with an allergy to cow’s milk, and aged six to 23 with an allergy to peanuts. Following an initial 12 months of desensitisation under strict medical supervision, subjects will be followed for two more years to provide longer term data. Following Natasha’s death, a new food safety law – known as ‘Natasha’s Law’ - was introduced in October last year. Since being brought in, it requires full ingredient and allergen labelling on all food made on the premises. Mrs Ednan-Laperouse believed her daughter’s death

would not be for nothing. She said: “We have been determined that Natasha’s death should not be in vain. “Following the successful implementation of Natasha’s Law, which has brought new ingredient and allergen labelling, we are delighted to announce the first Natasha clinical trial.” Co-chief investigator of the trial, Dr Paul Turner, felt it was a potential game changer for many with allergies. Dr Turner, who reader in paediatric allergy and clinical immunology at Imperial College London, said: “This study heralds a new era for the active treatment of food allergy. “For too long, we have told people just to avoid the food they are allergic to. That is not a treatment, and food-allergic people and their families deserve better.”

Monkeypox alert for Spain Health officials in Spain have been put on high alert over a possible outbreak of moneypox. The virus has already been detected in the UK and Portugal and it seems there are as many as 23 people displaying symptoms in Spain, all of whom are in the Madrid region and yet to be confirmed as monkeypox. Despite the lack of diagnosis, health authorities decided to issue a nationwide alert nonetheless “to guarantee a swift, coordinated and timely response:”

Madrid’s regional health department said the suspected cases were being analysed by the National Microbiology Centre to obtain a definitive diagnosis. “Generally speaking, monkeypox is spread by respiratory transmission, but the characteristics of the 23 suspected cases point towards transmission through mucus during sexual relations,” it said in a statement. “The people involved are doing well and are isolating at home, but a close

eye is being kept on them in case they need hospital treatment.” Fernando Simón, head of Spain’s emergency health centre and an experienced epidemioligist, said that although it is unlikely monkeypox would spread significantly, the possibility “can’t be ruled out.” Portuguese authorities have confirmed five cases and are investigating another 15 suspected cases. In a statement on Wednesday last, Portugal’s health ministry said the

cases it had detected had all involved men whose symptoms included ulcerative lesions. “The UK has reported similar cases of ulcerative lesions, with confirmed monkeypox virus infection,” it said. “We are monitoring the situation at national level and in conjunction with European institutions.” The first case logged in the UK involved a person who had recently been to Nigeria, where they are believed to have contracted the

www.costablancapeople.com

infection. According to the UK Health Security Agency, all four of the most recent cases are men who identify as gay or bisexual. Early symptoms of monkeypox include fever, headache, muscle aches, swollen lymph nodes and chills. A rash that can look like chickenpox or syphilis can also develop and spread from the face to other parts of the body, including the genitals. Most people recover within a few weeks.

Today, I am writing about our family’s loss. Last week, my sister sadly died. She was 62, and leaves a husband and two girls aged 23 and 27. She fought cancer for three years, but finally succumbed to a massive stroke when the cancer went to her brain. We were at her bedside; I have never seen such love as I saw from her husband and girls. I knew they were close of course - we were all close. My sister was indeed loved in the best possible way, every day of her life since she met her husband and had her girls. They are now bereft beyond belief; but

with great love, comes great sorrow, and that’s the price we pay. It’s much better to have the best relationships we can have with our families. One thing that shouldn’t surprise me is the depth of grief my husband is now feeling for my own family. He would often say to me that my sister, was like a sister to him. We have shared many happy times in Spain with them when they came over for their holidays, and with my parents; sadly, now gone too. Savour the important relationships in life; the ones who love you and yours.

Air pollution increases covid risk says new study Researchers have found that short-term exposure to common air pollutants may heighten the likelyhood of Covid-19 infection in young adults. The discovery was made in what is being described as a first-of-its-kind study of the age group now considered primarily responsible for spreading the respiratory disease. The study, recently published online in the Journal of the American Medical Association,

looked at 425 students and others in their mid-20s within an existing cohort who tested positive for the novel coronavirus. Despite “relatively low levels of air pollution exposure,” Swedish researchers, who work at the Stockholm-based Karolinska Institutet and other organizations in Sweden and Italy, tied higher daily levels of airborne particles to increased risk of infection.

Pedestrians Have Responsibilities Too “Both in the city and on the road, it is essential that pedestrians avoid using their mobile phones and listening to music or the radio with headphones.” This is the advice from the General Directorate of Traffic which shows that pedestrians also have obligations. “By distracting you, it isolates you from traffic and makes you even more vulnerable to being run over,” they emphasise. The use of mobile phones at the wheel, whose action carries a fine of 200 euros and the loss of 6 points from the driver’s license, has nothing to do in this case with pedestrians, who are not subject to sanctions. However, the DGT is also aware that they are distracted with the phone in hand, oblivious to their surroundings and can be involved in dangerous situations. However, pedestrians do have obligations. Pedestrians must always walk through the places designed for them

to do so, such as pavements, and, therefore, must not do so through areas prohibited, such as on a motorway. Outside the town, if there is no pavement, as a general rule, you have to walk on the left to see oncoming traffic, and if it exists, you will walk on the hard shoulder. Otherwise, the part of the road closest to the edge will always be used. In any case, if there are several people, they will have to go one after the other (in single file). In towns, when there is a pavement, you should walk through the centre, staying away from the curb so as to reduce the risk of being hit by a vehicle. It is obviously the biggest risk you can take. In fact, if a street does not have a sidewalk or there is an obstacle, the DGT says that it will circulate as close as possible to the wall and, if possible, facing traffic. Children should always go hand in hand with adults. Remember it. But they also have to play in safe spaces and

away from the road. The DGT speaks very clearly about pets: «Pedestrians cannot carry loose animals, they could create dangerous situations for other users of public roads». Sometimes we are very confident in this sense, but we forget the danger that carrying an animal loose on the street can entail. With what excuse should a pedestrian invade the road if it is not precisely to want to cross it? These situations occur to us hundreds of times every day and unfortunately we see many pedestrians who do not follow this guideline. The rule is quite clear, a pedestrian can only enter the road when they are crossing it, although, where provided, you should always use a crossing. Both in the city and on the road, monitor your civic behaviour as a citizen, more specifically as a pedestrian, and comply with the rules to be the first to benefit from everything going correctly every time you go out.

DGT Issues Warnings to Cyclists Cyclists are one of the groups most exposed to road traffic incidents given their greater vulnerability than cars, motorcycles and other motor vehicles. Therefore, caution must be extreme. The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) intends to eradicate widespread behaviours among all users who circulate on the roads, such as the use of mobile phones or the way they cross pedestrian crossings. Starting with the first, this habit is prohibited and sanctioned by the DGT also among those who ride a bicycle. The fine in this regard is 200 euros, and the same amount if cyclists circulate with headphones on: It is totally forbidden to use the mobile phone while riding a bicycle. Headphones connected to receivers or sound players are also prohibited. In its eagerness to dissuade everyone from combining driving with the use of a mobile phone, the new Traffic Law toughens the penalties for those who drive their car using the phone or holding it in their hand, which now involves a loss of six points instead of three. There are other aspects that cyclists must take into account to guarantee safety, comply with current regulations and avoid the respective penalty.

Among them is the obligation to get off the bike and cross on foot when they come across a zebra crossing. Cyclists do not have priority at pedestrian crossings, nor can they ride on sidewalks or pedestrian areas, so the DGT recalls the rule that establishes that they must cross them on foot. The corresponding fine is again 200 euro. For its part, one of the best known and most widespread regulations among users in the world of cycling is the use of a protective helmet on the head. On the road it is mandatory except on long climbs, in extreme heat or for medical reasons. In the city, however, it is only compulsory for those under 16 years of

age, although it is advisable for the rest. The fines also amount to 200 euro. With the entry into force of the new Road Safety Law on March 21, a new measure has been established that seeks to guarantee the safety of cyclists on the road and reduce accidents as much as possible. It is about penalising drivers who make dangerous overtaking with six points from the license (before it was four). Vehicles must maintain a minimum distance of 1.5 metres from bicycles at all times, and it is mandatory to change lanes on roads with more than one lane in each direction to ensure that the manoeuvre is safe.

Race 1. Start 11:30. Wind at start 3.5 knots. A nice clean start tacking to the buoy then returning, some confusion going through the line but Martin on the safety boat sorted them. Great tight racing and plenty of overtaking as the breeze picked up to 6.6 knots and

changed direction. On the finish line Ginnetta picked up the starboard buoy and took it with them, Martin recovered it and put it back so that Scirocco could also do it (they like those buoys). Results were first Sirocco (Julian Pering), second Shoestring Dos (Diane Hardwick/Brian Murray), third Shoestring Omega (John Down). Race 2. Start 12:55. Wind 6.5 knots then to 8 then to 9.5 so the water started to get lumpy towards the end. A good start by most and plenty of action during the race, a few penalties taken for touching boats to hitting buoys etc. but a good friendly race and great spirits at the end. Results were first Shoestring Dos (Diane Hardwick/Brian Murray), second Laser Standard (Tug Wilson), third Shoestring Omega (John Down). Interested in sailing and SAMM? TAlES fROM THE TOP flIGHT n CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Yeah, so Man City won and Liverpool won which means Man City won the Premier League. That’s it - factually what happened. Does the rest of it even matter? OK, OK. You’ve twisted my arm. So, ahead of kick-off the Premier League winning equations were pretty simple. Liverpool had to better City’s result - nothing more, nothing less. Yet, incredibly, even though Aston Villa led 2-0 at City - Liverpool were never top of the league in the ‘as it stands’ table. By the time Mohamed Salah put the Reds ahead at Liverpool, City were already well on the way to a remarkable comeback. The narrative, obviously and predictably, was about how Stevie G could finally really help his old club to a title. The irony that his Villa side led a 2-0 lead slip must not be missed. Gerrard was certainly prepared to give it a go - both Coutinho and Buendia started and their opening goal came from left-back Digne crossing to right-back Cash who got the ball through the body of Ederson. 1-0 Villa. Up at Anfield, Liverpool’s Sadio Mane was just getting his side level after Neto had put Wolves ahead, somewhat inconveniently. At halftime, King Klopp knew his side only needed a goal to move into first place and hope that Villa could hang on. 70 minutes in and Peppy G had rolled his dice - all three substitutes on, at least one goal needed and probably two (if you assume Liverpool would find a way of winning in front of the Kop, like mentality monsters do). So, ex-Liverpool Coutinho scoring was a real pain - 2-0 Villa surely took care of that side of things and all that was needed was Salah finding a goal that would not only win another Premier League title but add another Golden Boot to his collection. Five minutes can be a long time in football. 76 minutes - Gundogan. 78 minutes

Abbey Anglers On Tuesday the 17th of May the club visited the El Bosquet complex at Crevillente. The weather was at last set fair and 15 anglers braved the nice warm conditions to fish the penultimate round of the Abbey Angling cup. Winner on the day and continuing his great run of form was Bill Reade. Drawn on the very favoured peg 26 he fished bread to take some decent carp for 19kg. In second place was the venue specialist Neil McBernie who fished on one of his favourite pegs, peg 32. He fished the pole across on maggot for

- Rodri. 81 minutes - Gundogan. Salah’s goal at Anfield came too late - had they led when City were losing would that have affected City’s comeback? Hell, we’ll never know. A lot of criticism was thrown at the end of the match for the pitch invasion of blue shirts - though, to be fair, it might have been the Man City backroom staff. The crossbar was broken - rumours that this was part of Ederson’s attempt at timewasting at the end are completely false. That’s now ten league titles for Guardiola. We could point to the fact he’s managed Barcelona when he could pick Messi, Xavi and Iniesta at their very best. We could remind you that you or I could probably lead Bayern to the Bundesliga. You’re probably aware that Man City are funded by an entire wealthy country and employ an exceptional accountant. But, even with all that, you’ve still got to win it haven’t you? Down at the bottom, Everton revived the spirit of 1994 - the last time they were utterly useless and needed to come back from 2-0 to keep themselves in the top flight. Crystal Palace silenced all the Goodison Park fans that added flares and hounding opposition hotels to the team’s tactics - and you could argue they’ve been more useful than some of the plans laid down by Frank Lampard. Palace raced into a 2-0 lead and all evidence suggested the Ev were going to have to produce a miracle against Arsenal on the final day. Crazily, they got back into it and Dominic CalvertLewin managed to stay fit enough to score a late, late winner. A 3-2 win, like in 94 (just without the alleged matchfixing). That meant the last day was a straight showdown between Leeds (already tipped to be relegated by this very column) and Burnley. Burnley had to better Leeds’ result against Brentford. And did they? They did not. Newcastle beat Burnley and Leeds pulled it out of the hat against Brentford - who ended the game with nine men which you know, helps. Burnley are down and will be chasing down the lit fuse that is heading towards their financial time bomb. Leeds, against almost all odds, get to live another day in the top flight.

14.80kg. In third place was Terry Brindley. Drawn on peg B1 he fished his usual smelly paste on the pole for 13,86kg. Other section winners were Lenny Bolton with 11.70kg and Alan Davies with 11.64kg. The pairs event was won by Lenny Bolton and John Waples. The cup event which is run over 10 matches is really hotting up with Terry Screen holding a very narrow lead but he needs to beat Bill Reade next week to have any chance of winning the series. Ian Brown

Bielsa who? It’s a good thing Everton didn’t have to rely on getting a win at Arsenal to stay up. Mikel Arteta’s side remembered how to play quality football about a month too late as they swept aside the Toffees 5-1. Mind you, had Everton really needed a win it’s unlikely Dele Alli would have been starting. Whoa, simmer down Dele fans - he’s better off the bench as an impact sub like on Thursday, no? Either way, if Arsenal can beat a very average side 5-1 then Tottenham can batter a very rubbish one 5-0. Sonny boy scored twice against Norwich to share the Golden Boot with Salah and Conte can start planning for a season of Champions League football next time out. Well, we say season - we mean the group stages and then a glorious run in the Europe League, of course. Here’s a hot take. Man United are terrible. Ralf Rangnick has seen his reputation as the godfather of modern coaching destroyed. Erik ten Hag needs to find a way of getting rid of 18 and signing at least 12 this summer. And not just because Palace beat them

1-0 meaning United’s finish was their worst in 30 years. At Stamford Bridge it was the end of two eras - we waved goodbye to Roy Hodgson, probably for good this time, and Roman Abramovich. The next time Chelsea take the field with the false hope that they might challenge for the title, they’ll be under different ownership. They beat Watford 2-1 - a goal from Ross Barkley who some of you might remember used to play football for a living. West Ham, having enjoyed their time in the Europa League, fancy sight-seeing in the Europa Conference League next season to broaden their horizons. Graham Potter’s Brighton beat them 3-1 meaning they finish 7th. Below them, Leicester City beat the most inconsequential side of the season, Southampton, 4-1. Vardy put courtroom drama behind him to score. And that’s that for the Premier League season. Whatever you do, don’t compare the final table we predicted to the one that actually happened. You might start doubting the knowledge around here.
