Largest ever marijuana seizure by Guardia Civil

Guardia Civil have seized the largest ever haul of marijuana with more than 32 tons of packaged buds confiscated during a massive police operation across Spain. officers dismantled a

large criminal network, making arrests in valencia, toledo, Ciudad real and Asturias as part of the operation. Sources estimate the drugs would have a street value of at least €64m.

Guardia Civil sources explained, “through a complex business network, the criminals sent vacuum-packed marijuana throughout the national

territory, as well as to Switzerland, holland, Germany and belgium, among other european countries.” the investigation, codenamed

operation Jardines, concluded with the seizure of 32,370.2 kilograms of marijuana buds, the largest seizure of this substance, not only in Spain, but also internationally. the amount of product seized, say police, is equivalent to around 1.1 million marijuana plants. twenty detainees - nine men and eleven women between the ages of 20 and 59 - were part of an organisation with offices in toledo, Ciudad real, valencia and Asturias, which controlled the entire drug production and distribution process. the investigation began with an inspection by the Guardia Civil of several industrial hemp plantations in villacañas (toledo). the main individual under investigation owned a company with which they acquired seeds. A second individual transported and planted the seeds. Another company was in charge of the care, maintenance, collection and drying of the plants. the seed acquisition company was also in charge of collecting the dried plants, complete with buds and storing them in two warehouses located in the province of valencia. From there, the detainees processed the product, separating the buds and vacuum packaging them in different sizes to send them to places within Spain and to european countries, mainly Switzerland, holland, Germany and belgium. A second inspection took place in the town of Almagro (Ciudad real) during the month of october. officers from the toledo judicial police discovered some 37,000 plants distributed across four greenhouses and in the process of being dried. the three people who Continued on page 3

were present at the time of the raid were arrested. in the warehouse, the Guardia Civil also found four tons of marijuana buds stored in several bags. the destination of all the merchandise was the two warehouses in valencia. in valencia, officers seized 30,530

kilos of buds, 20 kilos of pollen -all vacuum packed-, 21,600 plants in the process of drying and 231,200 packs of marijuana buds. documentation was also found that confirmed the existence of several more plantations, machinery for processing and

packaging, including two machines for the extraction of pollen. in the valencia raid, 15 arrests were made. Finally, in the third and last phase of the sting, a raid was carried out in Asturias. 4,000 plants were seized and two people were arrested.

New cookbook launched by Los Montesinos students the department of tourism of Los montesinos town hall has launched a gastronomic guide and cookbook based on citrus and artichoke “two of the star products of our land”, as explained the town’s mayor, José manuel butrón. the presentation of the recipe book took place this week, the mayor revealing it was developed in collaboration with the local training courses ‘Cooking and the restaurant industry’, ‘Cooking and Gastronomy’ and ‘restaurant Services’ currently underway at remedios muñoz secondary school in Los montesinos. butrón, who was accompanied to the presentation by the councillor of tourism, Ana belén Juárez, as well as teachers marc Casanova and Pilar monago, coordinators of the cookbook, highlighted the very high standard of the dishes included in the book, a total of four cocktails and 13 meal recipes, five of them starters, five mains and three desserts. Among the recipes is prizewinner ‘Carxofa, a sweet dream’, an adaptation of the original idea presented for the 2022 benicarló Artichoke Gastronomic Contest, submitted by student José manuel ballesta Fernández, who was awarded the top prize for his recipe. Councillor Juárez highlighted

the quality of the recipes “which can be seen in the beautiful images that the Paparajote studio has captured, although to savour them, you will have to follow them step by step in your kitchens.” She highlighted “the great potential of gastronomy in our municipality as a tourist attraction” and recalled that Los montesinos has produced other recipe books that have been made with the collaboration of citizens, bars, restaurants and

confectioneries of the town but “on this occasion we wanted to go one step further and make visible a great rising value that we have in our town: the professional training degrees in Cooking and Catering that are taught at the ieS Los montesinos and that are already reaping the fruits of the great work they are doing, like recently in September as winners of the ii Alicante Gastronomic hospitality School contest they were proclaimed as the best

training hospitality school in the province of Alicante”. teacher marc Casanova highlighted the work that has been done on this cookbook “and how easy it has been to work with the department of tourism, which has given us all the facilities and freedom to prepare the dishes we wanted while taking into account the slogan that was proposed to us: that the citrus and the artichoke should have the leading role”. Pilar monago devised the cocktails in the guide “and for this we have used products from the area, from gin to citrus fruits. We wanted Los montesinos and vega baja to be present in all our elaborations and i think it has been a great success that the City Council has had the ieS remedios muñoz because it has been a great stimulus for the students of both Kitchen and restaurant industry”. Councillor Ana belén Juárez, mentioned the great work that is done in these vocational training courses that are taught in Los montesinos “to guarantee that hospitality and tourism are professionalized since it is a fundamental engine of our economy and only if we guarantee good service will we have the chance of being chosen again by those who have decided to visit us”.

Civil Guard office opens Residents demand meeting with Mayor over Rubbish in Orihuela Costa

the Councillors for Citizen Security, Antonio Sánchez, and for emergencies, Guillermo Cánovas, have announced that the Civil Guard’s office is now open at the emergency Services Centre at La Zenia, orihuela Costa. the office is open for people to report crimes, make statements and denuncias from 9am to 2pm monday to Friday, and an appointment can be made on the website www.guardiacivil.es. outside these hours, the service will continue to be provided at the Guardia Civil station in torre de la horadada. the new Guardia Civil office joins the security services for the coast already provided at the Centre by orihuela Local Police and the national Police immigration office, which processes and issues nie and residence certificates from 9am to 1pm monday to Friday, and citizen information, from 8:30am to 2pm weekdays.

the Councillor for Citizen Security, Antonio Sánchez, has pointed out that the transfer of the Civil Guard to the Security and emergency Services Centre is the result of hard work by his team and will provide a better service to the local community. “We want all the bodies and security forces to occupy the facilities that were designed for that, so that citizens find all the services in the same building and coordination between all the security forces is made easier”, he added. the Councillorfor emergencies explained that “the adaptation of the first floor of the building will soon be put out to tender so that both the SAmU and the Civil Protection services can relocate to the building. he said the team is pleased that progress has been made in setting up the Centre in orihuela Costa, which is a historic need for the residents of the Coast.

the Association of residents of Cabo roig and Lomas (AvCrL) of orihuela Costa has requested an urgent meeting with the mayor of orihuela, Carolina Gracia, and with the Councillor for Street Cleaning and Urban Solid Waste, Guillermo Cánovas. the Association wants to discuss what they consider ‘a serious situation due to the non-collection of rubbish and the state of many of its streets, converted into rubbish tips’. the demand was presented last tuesday, 1stnovember, to the orihuela City Council, but so far, no response has been received from the mayor. the Association has pointed outthat there are a large number of broken or missing containers, which is making the matter worse and the increasing amount of rubbish is encouraging rats, flies, bad smells. the letter sent to Carolina Gracia says that ‘in short, a

critical situation and a serious attack on health and hygiene’ is now facing the people of orihuela Costa. the letter asks for a response to two questions: the estimated date on which orihuela Costa will have its fleet of usual collection vehicles availablebecause “according to data published in the media, only two collection trucks are currently operating on the coast, the rest are off the road needing repairs”; and the second is the estimated date on which the Local Waste Plan will be launched, which the Association adds, “according to our data, should have come into operation in September 2021”. the demand for a meeting by AvCrL of orihuela Costa follows hot on the heels of a similar question being posed by the Association at the last full council meeting.

Double murder suspect identified Police have identified the alleged murderer of a 45-year-old elche woman and a 66-year-old man in Los montesinos. the suspect is currently being held in a psychiatric hospital in russia and was identified by his dnA. he is also accused of stabbing a woman in torrevieja. national Police and Guardia Civil worked together to identify nikolay t., a 26-year-old russian national and diagnosed schizophrenic. he is currently being held at a psychiatric centre in Smolensk, accused of a murder for which he was declared incompetent due to mental illness. he is accused of murdering Alicia, a 45-year-old court official from elche whose body was found on november 6 2020 in a ditch in the La hoya area. he is also accused of murdering a 66-yearold farmer in Los montesinos who was found with his throat cut two months previously. Police believe that after strangling Alicia, he fled to russia and was arrested there for a third murder.

back in July 2020, the suspect is alleged to have almost stabbed a woman to death in torrevieja (just weeks before the murder of the Los montesinos farmer) and it was this attempted murder that led to his downfall. Alicia was strangled from behind while she was walking her dog on the afternoon of november 6, 2020 in the district of La hoya. A neighbour found her body in a ditch next to an orange grove. Samples collected by the national Police from Alicia’s dog’s leash made it possible to confirm the alleged murderer was the same perpetrator as the Los montesinos killing as dnA samples taken from the victim there matched. Although police knew the killings had been carried out by the same suspect, they had not yet identified the alleged murderer.

investigators agreed that it was likely they were dealing with a serial killer, but that he chose his victims randomly and were unrelated, which complicated the investigations. this summer, CCtv images of the alleged perpetrator of an attempted murder of a woman in July 2020 in torrevieja were released by police and widely shared on social media in an attempt to identify the suspect. the stabbing took place on July 16, 2020 on Calle San Pascual in torrevieja when a man attacked a 58-year-old woman who was cleaning inside the porch of an apartment building. the woman suffered stab wounds but did not die thanks to a neighbour who heard her screams and came to her aid, which caused the suspect to flee. the sharing of images captured by security cameras located near where the attack took place prompted an anonymous call in which a friend of the suspect gave the serial killer’s name and surname.

Largest Byzantine necropolis in Spain uncovered in Rojales

excavations at the Cabezo del molino in rojales have uncovered the largest byzantine necropolis on the iberian peninsula. A study carried out with a georadar calculates that some 300 graves can be found dating between the 6th and 7th centuries. the find was revealed by researcher teresa Ximénez who works as an archaeologist at the Archaeological museum of Alicante (known as the marq). the site is believed to be the largest necropolis, or ancient cemetery, of byzantine origin ever found on the iberian peninsula. not only is it the largest, but Ximénez believes that it is also the best preserved of this historical stage dating from the 6th and 7th centuries (Under the roman empire). the findings were revealed after the recent completion of the fifth archaeological excavation campaign, funded by the Alicante Provincial Council and developed by the marq in collaboration with rojales town hall, rojales Archaeological museum, the University of León and the max Planck Jena institute in Germany. “it is a surprising and unique site,” said teresa Ximénez, who directed the project. the marq has carried out several

excavations at the same site in recent years, at which the remains of an important industrial complex have also been found. After carrying out a study using georadar, archaeologists were able to estimate that in this byzantine necropolis some 300 burial pits can be found in the hill where the archaeological site is located. So far, 30 tombs containing 50 individuals of different ages and sexes have been excavated. Archaeologists have also discovered grave goods, brooches and numerous ceramic materials. the research carried out in rojales is offering important information on burial rites and genetics. Some of the rock-cut tombs contained one or more individuals and were covered with stone chips or ceramic tiles. Some of them are carved with the symbol XP, in the Greek alphabet, known as Chrismon or anagram of Christ. during this historical period, cremation was not a feature of Christian burials and bodies were instead buried. in the case of the Cabezo del molino, as Ximénez explained, the deceased were placed with their heads to the west and their feet to the east, that is to say “at the setting sun and at the rising sun, a Christian rite of the first

period”. She added that the appearance of several bodies in some graves, with adults and minors together, indicates that many of the former inhabitants of Cabezo del molino died at the same time, “which leads us to think that highly contagious epidemics occurred and that the shared graves contained bodies of relatives”. the genetic tests carried out by the max Planck Jena institute will determine the origin of the inhabitants of rojales in this period, family relationships or cause of death. in terms of the cause of death, Ximénez pointed out that the burials would have been carried out at a time when historical sources speak of the “Plague of Justinian” one of the worst pandemics in history. the hypothesis that is being considered at the moment in view of the long human presence at the site in rojales is that it could have been a river port. According to Ximénez. “it’s too early to know for sure, there’s still a lot to investigate but for now it’s the one we’re considering.” excavations will continue for the next three years and the project will be expanded according to the results. Among them is locating, if it still exists, the ancient town with its houses and other religious buildings.

GBP / EUR UPdatE GBP the bank of england (boe) surprised markets yesterday (thursday), however, the surprise was not their 75bps rate hike, but their particularly dismal outlook on prospects for the UK economy, as they forecast a long recession ahead for the UK, as part of their updated forecasts.Furthermore, the boe issued some particularly strong guidance accompanying this rate hike, suggesting that UK rates will not need to rise much further to bring inflation back to their 2% target. ‘We can make no promises about future interest rates, but based on what where we stand today, we think that (interest rates) will have to go up by less than currently priced into financial markets.’ boe governor Andrew bailey was at pains to observe that this is important, given that rates on new fixedterm mortgages should not need to rise as much they have done. market-implied probability for future UK rate hikes was quickly adjusted on that line. indeed, long-term mortgage rates have also subsided somewhat over the past week, a move which is likely to continue (for now) given the boe’s insistence on a lower terminal rate. the pound accelerated its post-Fed decline, with GbP/USd slipping as low as 1.1155 on the session, before rebounding a touch. GbP/eUr slipped from over 1.1600, to around 1.1450. the move lower for sterling was probably fuelled (other than broad dollar strength) by the rather pessimistic outlook for UK economic growth from the boe, with their forecasts predicting a painful recession likely to last as long as eight quarters, which if played-out, would represent the longest recession in the UK since the second world war. Looking ahead, ongoing UK economic data will play a key role in determining market direction for UK assets,

especially the next couple of inflation reports, to see whether the boe are anywhere near being correct in their perception that inflation is likely to peak by the end of this year. however, with the UK economy already looking particularly soft, next week’s Q3 GdP reading will also be closely monitored. EURO despite those recent bumper 75bps rate hikes from the eCb, with the last being just a week ago (to 1.5%), the latest data has seeneuro area inflation pushing over the key 10% region, rising to 10.7% from 9.9% previously. that figure had already been a record high for the region. inflation in italy has now reached 12.8% (YoY), whilst Germany is not far behind at 11.6%. think that is bad? inflation in estonia, Latvia and Lithuania is now above 20%. ouch. Clearly those ongoing high energy and Food prices are the biggest drivers to those increases to headline inflation. extract those as well as beer and tobacco from the mix, and the core harmonised reading is a far more digestible 5% or so. on the plus side, growth in the region remains in positive territory (just), with a 0.2% increase from the previous quarter. however, that figure is way down from the 0.8% reading beforehand, reflecting the sharp slowdown in activity for the region. on balance, it seems as if the eCb will need to continue to raise rates at the current pace (75bps) for the foreseeable future, as they attempt to contain surging inflation. eCb head Christine Lagarde, said as much this week. however, with big imbalances throughout the region, such as italy’s debt to GdP ratio of 150%, as well as Spain having more than 75% of personal mortgages being of the tracker variety, each rate hike from here will become ever more painful for many.

Cruise passengers big boost for Alicante tourism the cruise terminal of the port of Alicante last week received four cruise ships with a total of 13,000 tourists, representing an overall 900,000 euro boost for the tourism sector, according to calculations by the municipal tourist board. the first of these ships, the marella explorer, arrived at the Port of Alicante on thursday at 8 in the morning and set sail at 6pm and had 1,924 people on board. the largest capacity ship of the four docked on Friday - the iona, of the P&o Cruises company, with capacity for 5,200 passengers. on Saturday, the norwegian escape of the norwegian Cruise Lines company arrived at 8:00 a.m. and departed again at 4:00 p.m. She has capacity for 4,266 cruise passengers. the last of the four was the volendam cruise ship, from the holland America Company, which carried 1,432 cruise passengers. the deputy mayor and head of the Alicante City & beach tourist board, mari Carmen Sánchez, said that “this season has been the recovery of cruise tourism in the city, we are once again a base port and the forecasts for next year are even better so we must continue working along these lines”.

in addition, the fact that such a large number of cruises are concentrated in the months of october and november helps in the seasonal adjustment of tourism in Alicante.experts calculate that the expenditure of cruise passengers who make a stopover in the city is divided between restaurants, commerce and excursions. the average spend in the case of cruise stopovers amounts to about 70 euros per passenger, per day. At the moment, the cruise calendar for 2023 has the arrival of 80 ships scheduled after the shipping company mSC Cruises doubled its commitment to Alicante as a port of embarkation after the success of this year. the italian-Swiss company mSC decided to renew its deal with Alicante cruise terminal for two years, so the city will continue to be a port of embarkation and

disembarkation for two of mSC’s cruise ships in principle until 2024. this year’s cruise business, during which Alicante port welcomed a total of 60 ships, has been excellent, registering a turnover of close to 15 million euros across the entire tourism and excursion sector. Up until August 31, Alicante Port had received a total of 64,640 cruise passengers (34 ships), 509% more than in 2021 (10,610 tourists), according to data made public by Puertos del estado. the Port and the Costa blanca tourism and Cruises Association have already agreed on 80 ships for next year, which offers the potential of 120,000 cruise passengers who will each spend between 70 and 250 euros during their visit, according to the calculations of the Provincial tourism board.

More than 100,000 people in the Alicante province working ‘illegally’ the so-called irregular economy has resurfaced after the pandemic, according to experts. Figures cross referenced between Social Security and the ePA (Active Population Survey) indicate that there are as many as 100,000 people in the Alicante province working under the radar. the study also revealed that up to 812,000 people in the province are registered as working, the highest figure since the study began. experts believe that there are several factors that have boosted the shadow economy, including the upturn in the real estate sector and the recovery of international tourism which both led to an historical overall occupancy figure in the province over the summer. if the data from the ePA is cross reference with the number of average individuals on the Social Security system for September -almost 706,000-, the result is that in the Aliante province there were more than 107,000 workers who claimed to have a job, but who were not given the ‘alta’ on social security. that is, they were not officially registered to work. this means that around 13% of employment in the area is irregular. Since there are two different sources of data, the figure cannot be taken literally – as it is a ‘survey’, the ePA has a certain margin of error and the time of data collection also influences the outcome – however, the experts do agree that it is a fairly approximate indicator of the size of the shadow economy in the area. traditionally, the volume of cash in hand employment had

oscillated between 100,000 and 130,000 individuals throughout the year - always growing in summer, despite the efforts of the government and unions to combat the issue. however, with the outbreak of the pandemic, the figure fell rapidly during lockdown. even in the months following lockdown when the country began to reopen, the volume of unregistered workers remained unusually low, with figures of between 65,000 and 85,000 people. this remained the case until with the start of 2022 the health situation was more stable, which also meant the “normalisation” of irregular activity. the existence of seasonal sectors, linked to tourism or agriculture as well as pockets of irregular employment that are prevalent in traditional industries, such as footwear, make the shadow economy very difficult to control. Workers unions in Alicante point out that unregistered workers are only part of the problem. “the reality is even worse, because to this must be added those who are hired for parttime and then work another half in cash or without pay, or those who have contracts of lower categories than the tasks they actually perform,” claims José maría ruiz olmo, head of workers union CC oo in l’Alancantí-les marines. General secretary of the UGt in l’Alacantí and the marina, Yaissel Sánchez said, “the tentacles of the submerged economy in Alicante are very long and cover many more activities than it seems”, who also highlighted the lack of resources

at the Labor inspectorate. Professor of the department of Applied economics of the University of Alicante and labour market expert hipólito Simón noted that the difficulties workers had in accessing support from the Government during the pandemic is another factor that reduced irregular employment during covid. “Although i am not aware of any study on the matter, there is the impression that in the context of the pandemic there were fewer incentives for irregular employment, since it made it difficult to access extraordinary public aid, both for wage earners (ertes) and for the self-employed (payment for cessation of activity), which is consistent with the fall in the difference in employment from both sources (ePA and Social Security affiliation) in the province,” he said. in terms of the consequences of such a sizable shadow economy in the province, professor of economic Analysis at the University of Alicante, Carmen herrero, pointed out that irregular employment contributes to perpetuating and increasing inequality and poverty, by reducing the social protection of those affected, but also by reducing State resources. “the best way to be supportive is to pay all the taxes that are yours, because the State has to collect in order to be able to redistribute through public services and social aid,” she said, adding that the impact of the pandemic and subsequent inflation crisis is widening the gap and pushing part of the middle class into poverty.

Los Montesinos races ‘against gender violence’ Los montesinos’ department of Sport this week presented a series of sporting events against gender violence. this is the 11th edition of the popular races; a 5K, a 10K and a walk as well as children’s races. the events take place on Sunday, november 27th at Avenida del marquesa starting at 10:00 a.m. with a 5K circuit where participants of the 5K run and walking race will make one lap of the circuit and the participants of the 10K run will complete two laps. the event features a wide range of categories, ranging from 14 years old in both 5k and 10k as well as categories for veterans over 65 years old. For this year’s eleventh edition of the event, it is expected to be a sports festival atmosphere for all participants, regardless of their level. organisers are keen to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the race which should have taken place in 2021, but could not be held due to restrictions. the race will be enlivened with live music, a free paella for all participants of the event, and more surprises that the organisers will reveal nearer the time. the sports councillor of Los montesinos town hall, Ana

belén Juárez, has mentioned “the importance of holding this type of event for all citizens, where there is opportunity for everyone in order to continue promoting sport in all types of ages and levels, since we understand sport as a healthy way of life and socialisation.” Registration for the 5K • 10K • marcha Los montesinos “Against Gender violence” can be carried

out on the website www. asuspuestos.com, including children’s categories. the cost to participate is a very reduced registration fee of 5 euros and participants will receive a runner’s bag, a commemorative test t-shirt, free paella, etc. Children’s races (500 to 2000m depending on the age category) are free with prior registration on the above website.

I am dreading Christmas, and deciding who to spend the day with is a nightmare. We have children, two of which are grown and simply don’t want to spend time with their critical grannies anymore. Both of our mothers are divorced. Annoyingly, my husband says for me to arrange something and he will be there; opting out of any decision making. It would be impossible to choose one over the other as people would be upset, although my husband’s mother does have other children to spend the day with, whereas mine only has my Aunt (her sister). Also, both mothers do not much care for each other and would not tolerate a joint family meal. Also, when either of them come to us, they stay for hours; last year my husband’s mother stayed from 9am until midnight and talked the whole time about herself and her problems – we were exhausted. I wish I could airbrush Christmas entirely. You could go away for Christmas by yourselves. You might feel you cannot do this, but we should be able to live our lives exactly how we wish. As a compromise you can

have your ‘Christmas meal’ any day you wish leading up to the big day itself. Choose a couple of weekends before, and spend a lunchtime with your respective mothers individually. Book a restaurant rather than hold it at your own home, because then you

can leave when you wish. You don’t have to include the children; do them a favour and not subject them to unpleasantness wielded by their grannies. If their grandmothers complain, simply say they are growing up now and have their own plans.

Man stabs flatmate in row over extractor fan An argument between two flatmates in Alicante, over a kitchen extractor fan, ended with one of them, the owner of the apartment, being stabbed five times. the alleged aggressor, a 39-year-old man, was remanded in custody at Fontcalent prison on tuesday last on charges of attempted murder. the prisoner alleged that there was a struggle but that the knife was carried by the 37-year-old victim. the owner of the house was treated at Alicante General hospital for five stab wounds, but he is out of danger and has appeared in court to file for private prosecution through his lawyer, who together with the public Prosecutor’s office asked the duty judge to admit the detainee to prison. the events occurred on Sunday shortly before eleven at night at an address in the La Florida neighbourhood of Alicante. the 091 emergency number was alerted to a noisy argument in which a knife had allegedly been used. A crew from the national Police was dispatched to the building and after entering the apartment block they found a man on the landing of the seventh-floor stairwell who

was bleeding profusely from his left arm and was accompanied by a large white dog. While helping the victim, officers saw that the door of the apartment was open and there was another man without a shirt who was cleaning up blood and turned out to be the alleged perpetrator of the stab wounds. the victim explained to the Police that the now-imprisoned man is an acquaintance of his who he had allowed to live in his home for the past two years because he was on the street and lacked the means to survive. the day of the attack the pair had had an argument over the extractor fan and during the dispute, it is alleged that the suspect went to the kitchen and after picking up a knife, presumably pounced on the owner of the property, attempting to stab him in the chest. the victim said that he tried to protect himself with his arm and sustained several injuries, so when he saw that his friend

continued with the attack, he chose to flee the property with his dog and took refuge in the stairwell while waiting for the arrival of the police. the suspect appeared in court on tuesday and said that they had a fight but that the knife was carried by the victim. the wounded man received initial medical care at the scene of the attack and was later transferred to Alicante General hospital to be treated for stab wounds. the weapon, found in a kitchen drawer, had been cleaned of blood and put away. the suspect has been charged with attempted murder, since the 20cm knife used could have caused death and the stab wounds were aimed at the heart area, only the victim managed to block the blows with his arms.

90% of health workers have been threatened or attacked, but only a third report it 90% of health workers in the Alicante province have felt threatened, insulted or attacked, both physically, verbally or psychologically, but fewer than a third report it, according to a new report. the frightening statistics were shared this week by dr. Juan marín who has worked for 30 years in Alicante hospital’s A&e department. dr marín encouraged his colleagues to file a complaint, keen to remind them that it is not necessary to do so personally because these are crimes that are prosecuted ex officio. Above all, he urged health workers who have been threatened or attacked to immediately call 112, advice corroborated by local policeman Paco negrete who said, “if order is disturbed in any health centre, a local patrol arrives immediately.” officer negrete added that the fines for disorder and interruption of work range between 600 and 30,000 euros. both negrete and dr marín were speaking at an awareness event in Alicante this week. Several speakers gave first hand accounts of attacks, saying threats and coercion are a daily

occurrence. negrete said that only by reporting incidents will it stop, “Case law has been established, so that it is not the word of the health worker against that of the aggressor, and we even act ex officio because the law protects health professionals.” Another speaker at the event was nurse melania butrón, who has worked in the Gynecology and obstetrics emergency department for two years. butrón said that waiting times are common in the service because the doctors attend the ward, operating rooms and emergency room at the same time, and the patients only see

the nurse, without any security when patients become angry. the nurse said that she has received death threats, even in the presence of police officers. She said, “i have suffered several more threats and altercations. in the face of a stillbirth, the father threatened me and shouted for the loss.” Although she has a panic button under her desk, the fear is still there. She said she is grateful for the support of the local police and the union, and thanked the organisers of this week’s conference “Aggressions in the health environment” for raising awareness about the situation.

Prince Harry has ‘no regrets’ about detailing ‘traumatic’ childhood in book Prince Harry is reported to have found it ‘cathartic’ to write about his ‘traumatic’ childhood for his forthcoming book. An insider claims the prince found the process of revisiting his childhood ‘tough’ and that it was difficult for him to recount certain traumatic events. The Duke of Sussex has reportedly written about his life in a way that will “minimize the fallout,” according to the same source. “Harry has been working hard to strike a balance that will hopefully minimize the fallout caused by this book,” the insider said, adding that Harry is trying to stay “true to his principles” and keep his publishers “happy at the same time.” While Harry worked with a ghostwriter on “Spare,” he is believed to have had full control over what was written. Harry remarked last year that his book is supposed to be about his life as a man and not as a prince.

“I’m writing this not as the prince I was born but as the man I have become,” Harry said, “I’ve worn many hats over the years, both literally and figuratively, and my hope is that in telling my story — the highs and lows, the mistakes, the lessons learned — I can help show that no matter where we come from, we have more in common than we think.” Despite his good intentions, a royal family expert claims that Harry’s book will be harmful to his royal family members. “The consequences of this will be far-reaching and may be highly destructive,” royal author Richard Fitzwilliams told UK newspapers. Fitzwilliams also claimed that the title of the book is “sensational” and “implies that [Harry] was not valued or … that he did not feel at the centre of events.” “Spare” will be released in January 2023.

Food blogger Julie Powell dies at 49

Julie Powell, who found fame with an early food blog that was turned into a best-selling book and a hit movie, has died at the age of 49. In 2002, she challenged herself to cook all 524 dishes in a recipe book by TV chef Julia Child in 365 days as a distraction from her day job. The resulting blog gained a large following and a book came out in 2005.She was played by Amy Adams in a 2009 film version, titled Julie & Julia, written and directed by Nora Ephron. Meryl Streep was nominated for an Oscar for portraying Julia Child. Powell fell in love with Child’s 1961 classic Mastering the Art of French Cooking, Volume 1 when she would steal it out of her mother’s pantry as a child. She came across it again when visiting her parents at the age

of 29. At the time, she was depressed and working for the Manhattan Development Corporation after the 11 September 2001 attacks. She decided to work her way through Child’s opus, often tackling multiple recipes a day in the tiny apartment she shared with her husband Eric - and she documented the personal and domestic challenges as well as the culinary ones. Her husband Eric Powell said her cause of death was a heart attack, which her brother-in-law Ethan Powell was caused by a heart arrhythmia, or heart rhythm problems. On Twitter last week, she had complained of feeling ill. Those paying tribute included fellow New York food blogger Deb Perelman, known for her Smitten Kitchen recipes.

World record pub crawl Some Guinness World Records are more enjoyable to break than others and ‘Most pubs visited in 24 hours´ is one most of us would relish having a go at. So in October 2021, after England’s Matt Ellis first established the Guinness World Record for “Most pubs visited in 24 hours (individual)” at 51 pubs, it wasn’t surprising that others quickly set out to topple it. In fact, it’s happened so often and so quickly, that even the record books haven’t been able to keep up. On 5th February, 2022, Welshman Gareth Murphy broke the record by visiting 56 pubs, and Guinness World Records certified his feat that June. By September, England’s Nathan Crimp claimed he had broken the record by stopping at 67 different pubs and began the process of having his record officially verified. But little did he know that all of his efforts were in vain, because South African Heinrich de Villiers had already been on a record-breaking pub crawl through Melbourne, Australia, that ran from 1oth to 11th February. He was just waiting for it to be certified, which has now happened, at an

incredible 78 pubs. De Villiers — who said a bit of confusion surrounding his application delayed certification — told Guinness World Records he attempted the crawl to “bring attention to and support the local pub/bar scene in Melbourne that was heavily affected during the COVID-19 pandemic and showcase the hidden and less known places that the City of Melbourne has to offer.” The after-effects of COVID made things a bit easier for the 22-year-old, as he had to check in at each venuehe went to. This was very helpful to use as evidence to submit to Guinness World Records that he in fact did go to 78 pubs/bars.

Christmas cups at Starbucks Starbucks certainly isn’t wasting time getting into the festive spirit as the global coffee chain has already unveiled their annual holiday “red cups” and announced their winter food and beverage menu, both of which will launched across the US last week and will now roll across Europe. Starbucks says the now-iconic holiday cups were first launched in 1997, meaning they are celebrating their 25th anniversary. Similar to last year, this year’s cup designs are inspired by gifts. “We have always talked about the cups as little gifts, and we hope they feel like a festive present to our customers and store partners,” Gary Jacobson, Starbucks creative director for this year’s holiday campaign, stated. The four patterns this year are named Gift-Wrapped Magic, Frosted Sparkle, Ornament Wonder, and Cozy Evergreen, which include “ribbon and tape elements,” according to Starbucks, including the appearance of gift tags on the back — “perfect for a personalised note.” As for the colour scheme, it’s described as featuring “classic seasonal colours with the added flair of mint green.” Meanwhile, holiday beverages are returning, too, though don’t expect anything new for Christmas 2022. Instead, Starbucks is celebrating another anniversary, the 20th year of their Peppermint Mocha. “It’s still among the most loved holiday beverages on the menu today and is available hot, iced and blended,” the chain announced. “Its recipe has changed very a little; it’s now made with semi-skimmed milk as the standard and with dark chocolate curls on top instead of red sprinkles.”

Bye bye Bounty? Fans of the coconut treat Bounty could be in for a disappointing Christmas after this week’s announcement from manufacturer Mars Wrigley that it would be removing the Bounty bar from some of its tubs of ‘Celebrations’ as part of a trial. Mars said that almost 40% of customers surveyed say they hate Bountys, so a limited selection of ‘no Bounty’ tubs are set to go on sale across the UK in the run-up to Christmas. Bounty hunters could have a challenge on their hands to find their coconut treat as around 40 supermarkets across the country are set to stock the Bounty free tubs over the coming weeks. The move comes after Mars let shoppers return unwanted Bounty bars last year. However, Mars said it is yet to decide whether the treats will be banished for good. Despite the survey revealing that many people leave the coconut creation untouched at the bottom of their Celebrations tub, for 18% it is still their sweet of choice. Tubs of Quality Street, Roses, Celebrations and Heroes have already started appearing on supermarket shelves, with sales usually soaring once Halloween is over. However, cost-of-living concerns could see many consumers trimming the treats

off their Christmas shopping lists. Mars Wrigley said its survey, which asked the opinion of 2,000 people aged between 18 and 65, suggested that 18% would feel irritated to find only Bounty bars were left in a tub, while 58% believed it would lead to a family argument. The survey results also suggest the sweet is popular with older consumers, with 38% of over-55s choosing it as their preferred bar. Mars Wrigley said the limited edition tubs would include additional Mars, Snickers, Milky Way, Galaxy and Maltesers sweets in place of the missing

Bounty. They will be available at “pop ups” within 40 different Tesco stores for six weeks in the run-up to Christmas. The company ran a “Bounty Return Scheme” last year, in which Bounty haters were able to return their unwanted coconut bars and swap them for Maltesers after the festive period. “Last year, we gave customers the opportunity to return their unwanted Bounty chocolates. Now, off the back of public demand, we’re trialling taking them out of the tub altogether,” said Celebrations senior brand manager Emily Owen.

Top five whiskeys to gift this Christmas If you’re looking for a nice whiskey to give as a gift this coming Christmas, we’ve got a ‘five most wanted’ list which can help you decide. Choosing a gift can be a challenge but whether you’re looking for a Scotch, a bourbon, Irish or Japanese, here are the world’s most popular whiskeys and a little bit about each one… 1. Glenmorangie Signet Single Malt While it’s pricey (retailing in Spain at around €190 a pop) Signet is one of the best on the market. Glenmorangie uses some of its oldest stocks in the recipe, aged in custommade American white oak casks. The feel is unreal and the flavours complex: Layered notes of bitter chocolate, sherried fruits, and a punch of spice make it a scrumptious dram. 2. The Macallan 25-year-old Sherry Oak If you were lucky in the Euromillions, you might consider a bottle or two of The Macallan 25-year-old Sherry Oak Single Malt. Available at El Corte Inglés for an eyewatering €2500,

The Macallan 25 is an extra special indulgence. Aged for a quarter of a century in Jerez sherry casks, the result is subtle layers of fruit and spice that unfold with every sip.

3. High West Double Rye At around €53, High West Double Rye is certainly at the more affordable end of the scale. It’s hard to find a better rye than this fun, flavourful drink. It works well neat, on the rocks or in cocktails. The spice-forward rye contains notes of apple, honey, mint, and cinnamon, making it a splendid, budget-friendly gift. 4. Yamazaki 18 year old It’s difficult to find and ridiculously expensive (depending on where you look, prices in Spain range from €1400 to €1900) but if you’re looking for a gift for a lover of Japanese whisky, this is it. Aged in ex-bourbon, ex-sherry, and Japanese Mizunara oak, it’s full of dark fruit notes and big pops of nuts and spice. 5. Knappogue Castle 16 year old The best of the Irish whiskies

has to be Knappogue Castle 16 year old. At around €90 a bottle, it’s certainly a Christmas treat (but a lot more reasonable than the Yamazaki or Macallan 25!). This Irish single malt is gentleaged, first for 14 years in ex-bourbon casks and then another two in Oloroso sherry wood. It’s a supple whiskey with swirling sherry notes on top of tree fruit, vanilla, chocolate, and baking spice.

Food crisis looms after Russia stops grain deal Russia has pulled out of an agreement designed to keep grain flowing out of Ukraine and into the global market. The war’s impact on Ukraine’s huge agricultural industry caused food shortages and massive price rises in some of the world’s poorest countries before the compromise was reached. A deal has been in place for three months allowing ships carrying vital cargo to pass through the Black Sea, which Russia’s navy control. But the Kremlin has now axed the deal after accusing Kyiv of launching attacks on naval vessels.Ukraine, however, denies launching the attack and accuses the Kremlin of ‘inventing terrorist attacks’. The move raises the prospect of a fresh food crisis, which

earlier this year forced global health leaders to warn about the prospect of mass starvation. The United Nations-brokered deal has allowed nine million tons of grain to leave Ukraine, pushing down prices globally.A UN spokesperson confirmed it had received reports the deal has broken down. They added: ‘It is vital that all parties refrain from any action that would imperil the Black Sea Grain Initiative which is a critical humanitarian effort that is clearly having a positive impact on access to food for millions of people around the world.’ Ukraine’s foreign minister accused Moscow of using a ‘false pretext’ to suspend its participation in the Black Sea grain corridor.

Dmytro Kuleba wrote on Twitter: ‘I call on all states to demand Russia to stop its hunger games and recommit to its obligations.’ It comes after the Kremlin, without offering any evidence, accused the Royal Navy of involvement with the Nord Stream explosions and Black Sea strikes. A UK Ministry of Defence spokesperson said: ‘To detract from their disastrous handling of the illegal invasion of Ukraine, the Russian Ministry of Defence is resorting to peddling false claims of an epic scale. ‘This invented story, says more about arguments going on inside the Russian government than it does about the West.’

Food poisoning risk People are consuming food past its use-by date and putting themselves at risk of getting “food poisoning” by eating spoiled goods because they are switching off fridges and freezers to save money, a watchdog has warned. Households are taking risks with food safety because of the cost-of-living squeeze and rising energy bills, research by the Food Standards Agency suggests. A third of consumers (32 percent) ate food past its useby date - after which time the product can be unsafe to consume - at least once in the past month because they could not afford to shop for more, a survey by the food safety watchdog found. Almost a fifth (18 percent) turned off a fridge or freezer containing food at least once in the last four weeks to cut down on their energy use to reduce bills. The FSA also found 40 percent of consumers are worried about being able to afford food in the next month and over the festive period. Around 30 percent of respondents said they had skipped a meal or cut down portions during the past month because they did not have enough money to buy food. Experts have come up with a number of suggestions to help households stay safe:

• Keep fridges on to help keep food items go further • Fridges should be set at the correct temperature (5C or below) to help prevent food poisoning - if food is not properly chilled it could go off faster and be unsafe to eat • A use-by date on food is about safety - and is the most important date to remember • Food can be eaten until and on the use-by date but not after • Food items with a use-bydate and are suitable for freezing can be frozen right up to the end of the date on the label • Best Before is about quality - the food can be safe to eat

after this date, but it might not be at its best • Freezers should be set to -18C - this temperature delays chemical reactions within foods and puts bacteria “on pause”, allowing it to be kept for longer. FSA chief executive Emily Miles said: “It’s not a good idea to turn off the fridge or eat food past its use-by date as these things can lead to a higher risk of you becoming ill with food poisoning.” She added: “We’ve got lots more advice on our website to help people use their judgment and make informed choices, while staying safe.”

More mental health support for children with new face-to-face service

For the first time ever, the health centre in Guardamar del Segura will have a child and adolescent psychiatry service. A new specialist in child and adolescent psychiatry has been added to the team and will begin a new face-to-face consultation service in Guardamar del Segura starting this week. A statement from the Department of Health of Torrevieja said that the move, “reinforces the staff of the mental

health area with the incorporation of a new specialist in child and adolescent psychiatry.” With the new hire, child psychiatry services are extended to Guardamar del Segura and Rojales, and surrounding areas, with consultations three days a week in the morning (Tuesday, Thursday and Friday). The new service complements the current care that is already provided at the USMIA clinic in El Acequión (Torrevieja).

“It represents an unprecedented advantage for citizens, bringing care even closer, if possible, and avoiding unnecessary travel for younger patients and their families,” says Jesús Mesones, head of the mental health area of the department of health of Torrevieja. The issues frequently treated by the Children’s and Youth Mental Health Unit of the Torrevieja Health Department are childhood

emotional disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorders, behavioural disorders, neurodevelopmental disorders and psychotic disorders, among others. Treatment includes individualised attention by psychology, psychiatry and social work, as well as attention to the children’s families, to involve them in the recovery process through family therapy, counselling and advice. It also carries out a psychosocial follow-up in

the cases that require it. Over the last year, mental health care for adults, children and adolescent patients has increased staff with two new specialists in psychology, a psychiatrist specialising in child and adolescent care, two psychiatrists and two social workers who are located in the La Mata Adult Mental Health Unit, in the Acequión Child and Youth Mental Health Unit, as well as in the hospital itself.

Almonds can boost gut health According to studies, as many as 40% of adults are living with a functional gastrointestinal disorder. Conditions might include heartburn, acid reflux, bloating or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Many people also suffer from chronic digestive diseases which is a major cause of hospitalisation and costs the economy millions in terms of time taken off work. With so many people suffering from gut-related issues, it’s no wonder we are paying more and more attention to what goes on in our intestines and trying to improve our gut microbiome. A new study has found that eating a few almonds every day can greatly improve gut health. The study was carried out by a team of scientists at King’s College London and published recently in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Scientists looked at 87 adults whose diet did not include an adequate amount of fibre, but who did eat unhealthy snacks such as crisps and chocolate. After splitting participants into three groups, the researchers behind the study asked one group to give up their normal snacks and instead eat 56 grams of whole almonds per day for a total of four weeks. The second group switched their snacks to the same amount of almonds. However, in this case,

they ate ground nuts instead of whole almonds. Finally, the third group of participants didn’t introduce almonds into their diet, but did switch from chocolate and crisps to muffins. After a month, researchers found that participants who had switched to a daily almond snack of either kind (either whole or ground) had a higher amount of butyrate than those who were eating muffins. They also found that eating almonds increased the amount of monounsaturated fatty acids, fibre, and potassium, as well as additional nutrients. Lead author of the study, Professor Kevin Whelan, head of the Department of Nutritional Science at King’s College said, “Part of the way in which the gut microbiota impact human health is through the production of short-chain fatty acids, such as butyrate. These molecules act as a fuel source for cells in the colon, they regulate the absorption of other nutrients in the gut and help balance the immune system. We think these findings suggest almond consumption may benefit bacterial metabolism in a way that has the potential to influence human health.” Paulina Lee, functional gut health dietitian said, “The findings from this study weren’t surprising when comparing almond intake to muffin intake

(depending on the type of muffin), because almonds contain more fibre. Fibre is the main fuel for probiotics or our healthy gut bacteria to utilise, so that they can create metabolites, like serotonin and butyrate.” At the same time, Lee remarked that “almonds aren’t the only way to get more butyrate.” “Eating 30 different vegetables, including avocados, legumes, or other prebiotic foods per week—and including fermented foods, like kimchi and sauerkraut—can help you build diverse gut bacteria,” she advises, “They can produce more butyrate and other beneficial metabolites for our body.”

An Easier Way of Dealing with Abandoned Vehicles

A problem that all towns and cities in Spain seem to suffer from, is the blight of abandoned cars, especially on public roads, and whereas there has always been a procedure to deal with these vehicles, the DGT has just made to whole process a lot simpler, which they hope will assist in the removal of around 100,000 abandoned vehicles. This nuisance, which is also considered harmful attitude to the environment, will benefit from an instruction published by the DGT that will allow them to be removed more quickly, even those found on private properties, which until now were outside of any type of legislation. Until now, to destroy a vehicle or

to pass it into public ownership for use in surveillance and traffic control services, a tedious civil process had to be followed, which on many occasions took too long. Now, with this administrative process, everything will be easier, including its destruction in an authorised scrap yard. The new instruction is clear. In the event that they are variegated there are three options. When the vehicle spends two months in a municipal deposit and the owner has not made an allegation. It will also become part of the scrapyard or public services when its abandonment is certified by being parked for more than a month in the

same place, it presents damage that prevents its movement, or it does not have registration plates. In the case of a damaged vehicle on private property, it will be the owner of the vehicle who requests the scrapping by providing the document to the DGT to avoid being sanctioned. In the event that the vehicle is not faulty, the terms are extended, but at least there will be a guarantee for the owners of establishments and private venues. If the vehicle is in a public parking lot, it can be removed after six months without being claimed. In the case of private venues, it will be necessary to consider whether it

meets any of the above requirements to comply with the withdrawal. More complex will be in a garage of a community of neighbours. It will be necessary to consult different horizontal property regulations and assess the possible risk of the vehicle for the integrity of the others and the

building. To all these terms, one month of notification to the owner will be added. With this communication, either at the electronic road address, at the address or at the BOE, the State will justify the actions carried out on the vehicle that will be considered abandoned.

Overtaking is one of the most dangerous manoeuvres in vehicle traffic and therefore safety measures must be taken to avoid generating a risk for the driver and third parties. You might remember from previous articles that there used to be a rule whereas in certain circumstances it was permitted to exceed the maximum permitted speed limit when overtaking. This was to reduce the amount of time that the manoeuvre took, but as that also meant increasing your speed heading towards oncoming traffic, it was deemed a dangerous practice, and that rule was withdrawn in 2022. Now, the maximum permitted speed on any road is exactly that, a maximum. Overtaking is regulated in the Reglamento General de Circulación, between articles 82 to 89, and in the Tráfico, Circulación de Vehículos a Motor y Seguridad Vial, between articles 32 to 37. Each year, in Spain, there are more than 2,500 incidents with victims as a result of irregular overtaking, so it is

important that we know the rules. Hopefully you are already aware that overtaking is prohibited when a solid white line is present in the carriageway separating the flow of traffic. There is an exception in that you are permitted to cross this line in order to give cyclists or pedestrians the minimum separation distance when passing, but you may only do this when no vehicles are approaching from the opposite direction. There may also be signs which tell you overtaking is prohibited on a stretch of road. However, there are other places where overtaking is not permitted, even where signs and signals do not indicate the prohibition. They are largely in places of poor visibility. For this reason, overtaking is prohibited in places where, due to lack of visibility, this manoeuvre is particularly dangerous: on curves and gradients without visibility, behind a large vehicle that is overtaking, at level crossings and pedestrians, at some intersections, and tunnels.

In curves and elevation changes without visibility, the driver does not have an adequate view of the road and may encounter another car traveling in the opposite direction, which greatly increases the danger of overtaking. Behind an overtaking truck we also have a visibility problem because of the volume of the vehicle we are following. At level crossings and surroundings, the risk of a tram or train passing without the driver having enough time to react increases. At the same time, the lateral visibility of the overtaking vehicle is reduced. Also, at junctions and their proximities, the vehicle you are passing cannot see cars or motorcycles approaching. In pedestrian crossings, the vision of a possible pedestrian crossing is lost, which increases the risk of being run over. Finally, in tunnels or underpasses with traffic in both directions, overtaking is prohibited, unless there is more than one lane for the direction of the overtaking vehicle.

Anyone carrying a knock that might put their trip to Qatar in jeopardy? No? Good - take it easy through this week’s column though, whilst giving the impression you are 100% up for it of course. Someone made a reasonably intelligent point on the wireless over the weekend - it’s all very well the players going to the World Cup having all these games in a short space of time, but what about all the players not going to the tournament who have to go through this insane schedule without the mid-season extravaganza to look forward to? Will someone just think of the kids for once? Poor pets, being paid millions and then getting a month off in the middle of their year - I mean, imagine Janice in accounts being told she can the month before Christmas off to do her shopping but has to work a few extra hours before and after that month to make it happen. Janice would be all over it, I assure you. Anyway, what happened in the penultimate weekend of Premier League football before the greatest show on Earth gets overshadowed by the biggest show on Earth? I seem to recall many years ago when I started writing this rubbish that round about now Leicester City were in the mix and it all felt very “yeah, it’s fun but City will still win it”. Here we are seven (is it seven? I mean, who’s actually counting these things?) years later and Arsenal sit top of the table and very much has a similar vibe - and, of course, the mistake we all made back then was not taking Claudio Dilly-Dong Ranieri seriously enough until the very end. That said, Mikel Arteta does it make it quite difficult for us to take him seriously - but Arsenal do seem to be quite good. They beat Graham Potter’s Chelsea 1-0 at the Bridge but it was much more than 1-0 really. They dominated them. They suffocated

them. They were all over every single one of them. They just couldn’t score especially Gabby Jesus who if he really is trying to get back in the Brazil squad for Qatar has a curious way of showing it. Or perhaps, he ethically doesn’t fancy the World Cup and is just making sure he doesn’t get picked. When they did score, it was very George Graham. Arsenal corner. Near post run from one centre back causing confusion - flick it on if possible (Saliba didn’t to be fair), run off in wild celebration as your partner scores at the back post. Gabriel used up the Gabbygoal quota for the weekend netting the winner grabbing three points that saw the Gunners move back to the summit ahead of Man City. City didn’t take the easy route to victory either. Their Saturday clash with Fulham was made slightly more challenging by the fact that Joao Cancelo fancied a rest ahead of you know what. He gave away a penalty and got himself sent off for his troubles - meaning the other ten had to work just that little bit harder and empty those tanks even more. Not that fatigue is going to worry Jack Grealish much in a few week’s time - one suspects his biggest World Cup role will be choosing the tunez the boyz want in the hotel chill-out room. It being 1-1 with an hour to go meant Erling the Robot got unplugged and wheeled out. He scored quickly, only to see one of his extra-long limbs ruled offside by VAR. But he did score, obviously - his 94th-minute penalty (and penalties going in never a guarantee for City) stole the 2-1 win and broke Fulham’s little hearts. Considering how rubbish Liverpool have been in the last couple of Premier League outings, you’d have thought this would be the game the Tottenham fancied starting well and putting a shift in for the first 45 minutes. Yeah, about that. Mo Salah, he who is so so bad nowadays remember, scored twice to make it 9 in 8 - one delightfully flicked on by Eric Dier in a way former Liverpool flicker onner Emile Heskey would have been proud of. Mind you, Spurs being two down at the break isn’t that rare -

Stray Sod golf Memorial Day Friday saw the Stray Sod Golf Society host the annual Jim Whelehan Memorial Day, with 74 players heading to Vista Bella. There were prizes up for grabs on each hole and grand prizes for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th place overall in the tournament. There was also a special `Bad Day at the Office’ trophy for 74th place. Once the round was over, it was back to The Stray Sod, La Fuente, for a complimentary carvery meal and the presentation ceremony given by society captain John Batterby. The top 4 prizes were presented by Jim’s wife, Marie. The overall winner was Maria Feagan with 43 points and she won a golf bag. Bad Day at the Office –Bob Smith – 11 points. 4th Place – Richie Mason - 38 points 3rd Place – Ken Urkedal – 39 points 2nd Place – Graham Cowley – 40 points 1st Place – Maria Feagan – 43 points. Big thanks go to all the businesses that sponsored a hole, especially local sponsors including: Gary at Crystal Guide, Claire at Bentley’s and Ash and Eddie at Stray Sod Green Fees.

certainly not as rare as Klopp’s lot being ahead away from home in the league. And, shock, Spurs turned up after halftime and turned it into a proper game - Kulusevski, an attacking player that can move at more than a snail’s pace so clearly adding some variety into Conte’s attack, set one up for Harry Kane (just one more to get through Harry, mind those ankles) and Spurs piled on to no avail. Too little too late, Antonio. Unai Emery casually rocked up at Villa Park and saw his new boys beat Man United there for the first time in 30 years. Easy, this Premier League management lark isn’t, Unai? The second time around, anyway. There was a time that United being 2-0 down at Villa meant only one thing - a 3-2 win to United but then those midfields didn’t have Donny van der Beek in them and it was probably a slightly earlier iteration of CR7 in attack. And I reckon the earlier iteration would have body-slammed Tyrone Mings to the ground a lot faster than he managed on Sunday. Villa were certainly good more than United were completely hopeless. But United weren’t very good and Villa weren’t exactly great - but their fans won’t care. Emery wants to win a trophy, so that makes him completely different to every other manager before him. Emery has won Europa Leagues aplenty though and is joined in the Premier League by another Europa League-winning Spaniard who has also managed their national team as well as La Seleccion. That was a little dig at Senor Perez who likes to think Real Madrid are Spain, if you missed it. Anyhoo, Julen Lopetegui is now the manager of Wolves who are in the bottom three having lost at home to Brighton on Saturday. Newcastle briefly flirted with third place, almost certainly for the first time since the days of Sir Bobby Robson or Kevin Keegan. Maybe even Kenny Dalglish or Ruud Gullit. But probably not Alan Pardew and certainly not Joe Kinnear. They beat Southampton 4-1 at St Mary’s - which was better than losing up North for Hassenhuttl who was spared a long drive home waiting

to be sacked. He was able to get the news and still be back in for the Strictly results. West Ham are starting to remind me of Everton once they started splashing some cash. A frugal Moysiah equals a successful football team - Moysey splashing the cash usually only goes one way, and we are seeing that with this Hammers side. Lots of money spent and the team looks worse than it did before. Crystal Palace beat them 2-1 at the Athletics Stadium, Michael Olise scoring a very deflected winner in added time. Nottingham Forest are still rock bottom and have to employ all kinds of tactics to get three points currently - this week, their groundsman tried to rough up Brentford’s pre-match warmup. There’s no confirmation if it was one of the divots they were so worried about being created that tripped up Wissa in the area as he went round Dean Henderson to win a penalty. The game ended 2-2 - and the biggest travesty was Ivan Toney being suspended so we couldn’t see his technique against Hendo’s penalty-saving skills. Leicester are a completely different team showing that sticking with a manager isn’t always a bad idea (especially when you can’t really afford to sack him and didn’t buy him any new players in the summer). A 2-0 at Everton isn’t always difficult to get but all wins count double for Brendan right now and the Toffees are going to be in a relegation battle (again) no matter how much they try and deny it. Last week, Jesse Marsch couldn’t stop talking about stopping the bleeding. Being 3-1 at home to Bournemouth looked like a ruptured artery so there was some decent emergency first aid administered for them to turn it around and win 4-3. Gary O’Neil - we said you should have quit after six games and let someone else deal with the fact that was never going to continue. So, we have one more weekend of Premier League football before all eyes are fixed on the football in Qatar and nothing else, alright? On FIFA’s orders football only. And don’t ask Gareth any difficult questions - Jurgen said so, OK?

imanyo golf Society “Remembrance Day Cup” 2nd November at Altorreal Imanyo’s golf society have been supporting the Royal British Legion for the past seven years, this is the third time we played for the Remembrance Day Cup sponsored by Imanyo golf society and Mick the Grip on behalf of the Royal British Legion, all the money raised on this day stays in Spain to help ex-service men and women who have retired here. Arriving at Altorreal we found everything ready and waiting, the course was in fantastic condition from tee boxes, fairways, greens and bunkers everything was up to the normal high standard. Twenty-seven players took part with an extra early start to the day starting at Imanyo’s for the traditional English breakfast. The format was singles full handicap Stableford, for those in the UK the weather was sunshine and a pleasant 80 degrees, all players were still in shorts. Again, all the scores between groups A and B were very

close with the winner eventually coming from group B. Winner of the Remembrance Day Cup from group B was Nick Chambers with an HCP cutting 43 points, runner up on count back was “Templegate” Dave Sanders with 35 points, third place was the “Flying Scotsman” Andy Ramage also with 35 points. Winner of group A was Paul Davison with 42points, runner up “Tom Tom” Brian Court with 36 points and third place went to “Fruit Farmer” Tom Goulden, with 35 Points. Nearest the pin’s winners’ group A were

hole 6 “Twelve Trees” Steve Ayre, hole 8 “Blackpool Rock” Ian Chetwynd, hole 13 “Three Clubs” Sean McGuinness, group B hole 4 Simon Dakers, hole 10 no winner and hole 15 “Paw” Derry Quinlan, best front 9 went to Lee George with 18 points best back 9 was Lozz Maslanka with 20 points. The two’s pot €30 was not won. The presentation and rafflewere held back at Imanyo’s bar, thank you to Antonio, and all the staff for looking after us, all money raised on the day was in aid of the Poppy Appeal for the Royal British Legion, the football card was won by Lozz Maslanka with Hearts raising €40, players were fined for lost balls which raised €50 and our table top raffle raised €135 making a total of €225 for the Royal British Legion.
