The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal Launch 2017

T

he Annual Launch of The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal in Spain took place in Benidorm recently. Once again the parade was lead by the Torrevieja Pipes and Drums and its music brought holidaymakers from the beach to watch the parade at the Rincon de Loix. Following the Band were the numerous Legion Branch Standards as well as Standards for a number of other military organisations. Marching in the parade beside the veterans, were people representing a number of different nationalities. The Mayor of Benidorm, Sñr Antonio Pérez, welcomed everyone to the city and other special guests included Elizabeth Bell MBE, Vice Consul at the British Consulate in Alicante, Sgt. Michelle Kadshaw RAF from Madrid, representing the Defence Attaché and Mrs Una Cleminson, the Legion National

Vice Chairman. Regular attendees from the Royal Hospital, Chelsea – Chelsea Pensioners - were the very popular Arthur “Skippy” Teasdale and Wayne Campbell MBE looking splendid in their scarlet coats. The Parade ended at the Rincon de Loix where Mr Donald Cubbon, Chairman of District North, led the various speeches ending with a presentation to Sñr Pérez of a framed Certificate in appreciation of the tremendous support from the Benidorm Ayuntamiento. The ceremony ended with music from the Torrevieja Pipes and Drums with much applause from those gathered; a truly spectacular day. Poppies are now available in the area so the appeal from the Legion is - Please Wear your Poppy with Pride. The Legion needs your donations to support our Armed Forces Community at times of great need. The Royal British Legion is

asking the nation to Rethink Remembrance by recognising the sacrifices made by the Armed Forces community, past and present. By wearing a poppy, you aren’t just remembering the fallen: you’re supporting a new generation of veterans and Service personnel that need our support. Each year, an army of volunteers distribute the iconic paper poppies, collecting donations in return to help support vital work for the Armed Forces community. Members of the public wear the paper poppy on their chest as a symbol of Remembrance: to remember the fallen Service men and women killed in conflict. A number of Remembrance events, such as Remembrance Sunday, are held during the Poppy Appeal to

commemorate the fallen. The first Poppy Appeal was held in 1921, the founding year of The Royal British Legion. Red silk poppies, inspired by the famous First World War poem In Flanders Fields, sold out instantly and raised more than £106,000. The funds helped WW1 veterans find employment and housing after the war. The following year, the Poppy Factory was set up, employing disabled exServicemen to create the poppies to sell during the appeal. Today, the factory still produces millions of poppies each year so that the nation can wear them with pride. Various Remembrance Services are being held over the whole District and

BITE SIZE Refugee crisis exposed NEWS: It seems to work well. Inviting people to the animal shelter in Torrevieja to see the dogs looking for homes has seen an increase in adoption. On Saturday 4th November the volunteers at the shelter paraded the dogs on la Calle Nenúfares and anyone interested in adopting one had opportunity to see them in a more relaxed environment between 11.30 and 2pm. ‘The idea,’ explains Councillor Carmen Morate, ‘Is that potential adopters can see the animals outside of the cages.’ The cattery was also open to visitors with around 30 cats currently waiting for adoption. Vegan food was available to eat along with other refreshments. There was a children’s workshop and a charity stall. This event followed on from the last open day in September which had also been a success.

The Red Cross are presenting an exhibition of photographs featuring people who are trapped as a result of the refugee crisis in Europe. The exhibition will be opened at 8pm on Friday 3rd November in the Virgen del Carmen centre in Torrevieja along with a conference delivered by the Red Cross. The councillor for immigration and integration, Carmen Morate, will be opening the exhibition which is called ‘Trapped. Refugee crisis in Europe.’ The exhibition will be open until the 26th November and will begin with a talk called ‘Intervention by the Red Cross before the immigration crisis. Experiences of two delegates in Greece.’ The purpose of the exhibition and the talks is to draw attention to the work that the Red Cross are doing. ‘Above all,’ explains Councillor Morate, ‘It provides a real perspective of the problems of other countries and the difficult situations that people are facing there daily. It shows us the real challenges there are and teaches us the importance of finding solutions.’ Councillor Morate continued by drawing attention to the good work that the Red Cross do internationally and its ethos of cooperation. Persecution, armed conflicts and poverty force millions of people to abandon their homes every year. In the last five years there has been alarming increase in forced migration with the problems in Syria and other world wide conflicts. The exhibition demonstrates, through

Banking up the sand in Torrevieja Torrevieja council plans to collect sand from Torreblanca to provide their very own sand bank of spare sand to use when stocks are low elsewhere. It is planned to extract at least 15,000 cubic metres of sand from the ravine and that this will then be recycled as and when it is needed. The sand originally came from displaced dunes during periods of urbanisation development. The sand will need treatment before it can be used

again as the area has suffered from a large amount of additional dumping of waste. A contract has now been issued to allow removal of the sand, clean it up and prepare it for use in places where the sand is depleted. During winter storms, the beaches can lose a significant amount of sand and this new bank of available materials will mean that it can quickly be replaced. Suzanne O’Connell

Registrations must be done between the 3rd and 10th November and you can fill in the necessary form online. Participating restaurants and bars must offer either a tapas of the house and gourmet tapas; two gourmet tapas or two house tapas. The price of the tapa and the drink must be €2.50.

No contract for mosquito busters The mosquitos have been out in force again following the recent rain in the area. Combined with continuing warm conditions, it’s ideal for mosquitos. However, the firm who is charged with the task of keeping the numbers down do not officially have a contract according to information published in Información. The firm which is responsible for the control of mosquitos, cockroaches and rodents is CTL and they are claiming that since September they have been working without a contract. The firm had been contracted to provide the service for the last four years and it is currently unclear whether they will continue to do so. Concerns have been raised in Torreta III that the areas of land being used for the collection of flood water are contributing to the problem. In these flood ‘basins’ water can be left standing for days after the flood has subsided. Councillor, Domingo Soler has reassured residents that work to keep the mosquitos in check will continue to be done as and when necessary. Alongside the use of pesticides the town council is exploring other, more natural means, of keeping this pest at bay.

Indoor swimming pool to reopen After almost a year of work and repair the indoor swimming pool is due to reopen in November. Councillor Victor Ferrandez explained in a press conference that the final stages of renovating the pool are being put into place and they are just now regulating the chemicals in the water. It is anticipated that an exact opening day will follow shortly. The swimming pool was closed following the detection of a number of problems which had built up over a period of years. It’s an Olympic size swimming pool and is particularly in demand during the autumn and winter months. Continued on page 6

Consumer protection legislation now in force in Spain means arbitration between customers and firms is free of charge to the former, and no limits apply to the amount of a claim. The new law is the enactment of a European Union directive which requires all consumers resident in member States to have the right to resolve issues relating to goods and services purchased without cost and without going through the courts. All consumer disputes must be resolved within 90 days of the company receiving the complaint. Spain's government has removed the lower limit of claims, previously €30, and the upper limit, which was €10,000, and consumers no longer have to pay a fee, which used to be set at a maximum of €30. The legislation also prevents companies from insisting on their own

arbitration services, or one of their choice, being used. Goods and services purchased by residents in EU countries from companies based in any EU member State, even if the two countries are different, are covered, as are purchases made in person, by telephone, mail order, or internet. Financial services and airlines are now obliged by law to participate in the arbitration process if a dispute cannot be resolved in-house, and are not permitted to force consumers to go straight to the courts at their own cost. Resolutions will be binding and enforced by the relevant State bodies. In Spain, these include the ministry of public works for airlines, the Bank of Spain, the economy ministry's General Directorate of Insurance and its Pension Fund, and the National Values Market Commission (CNMV) for financial services.

Time to finish the Dique de poniente You may not have noticed but as well as the Dique de Levante which is the main pier extending into the sea along the front of Torrevieja, there is another. The Dique de poniente is situated between the two beaches of Acequion and Naufragos. It runs parallel to the salt conveyer belt that takes the salt from the lakes down to ships waiting at sea. If you have noticed this second dique before it could be because of the poor state of repair it is in. Officially, it is out of bounds for people to use. However, the security has not been maintained and the barrier has gradually been pulled down to allow people to use it as an impromptu if unofficial paseo. Now the mayor of Torrevieja, José Manuel Dolón, is calling for the work on this dique to be completed. The business in charge of this is called Acuamed and they not only have failed to complete the building work but have also left it unsafe.‘In spite of numerous phone calls and

interviews, to this day they haven’t completed it. It is essential that they secure it before there is an accident.’ During the summer the pier was used by many people for taking a walk out to sea and it was even used by fishermen and bathers. The work on the dique stopped as a result of a financial disagreement about the valuation of the work still to be completed. The situation was complicated further in 2016 when there was a corruption scandal that implicated some of the directors of the business. All the projects that Acuamed were involved with were frozen. This included the dique which was being renovated by the firm as compensation for the works at the desalination plant. Now the mayor is looking for answers from the Ministry of Agriculture. He feels that the town council has been left with a problem, not of their making, that the town’s people are demanding an answer to. Suzanne O’Connell

The brave Spaniard who lost his life helping police tackle terrorists at London's Borough Market in June will have a park named after him in the town he was born in Galicia. Ignacio Echeverría began beating one of the killers with his skateboard when he saw police were struggling, but was knifed in the back by another of the terrorists and died later in hospital. Although his family all lives in Madrid, aside from one sister who lived near him in London, Ignacio was born

in the town of As Pontes in the province of A Coruña in Spain's far north-western region. Mayor Valentín García fitted a plaque with Ignacio's name and a picture of a skateboard. The ceremony was attended by the HSBC analyst's family in As Pontes on Saturday and hundreds of locals turned out to give them their support. Ignacio Echeverría Park in the Anguieiro neighbourhood is right next door to the house he lived in until he was 11 years old.

UK turmoil predicted Theresa May’s Conservative government will collapse in 2018 and trigger a fresh election, a leading think tank has predicted. According to Morgan Stanley, by next year May will be unable to keep walking the ‘tightrope’ of just about satisfying both the moderate and more radical wings of the Conservative Party – as well as the general public. May’s tiny parliamentary majority means just a handful of hardline Brexiteers rebelling against her could cause a disastrous government collapse. Morgan Stanley said: “This year, we think that the government makes enough concessions to allow the talks to progress, and the government holds together since the outcome of the talks is still open and Labour are ahead in the polls. “Next year, however, we think that the government is likely to fall. We expect the EU to offer a choice between a close relationship in which the UK can participate in the single market and customs union but will be bound by the EU rules of the game, and an arm’s length

relationship in the UK, in which the UK achieves full sovereignty over borders, courts and laws, but does not participate in the single market and the customs union.

17 years demanded for mother who killed baby Prosecutors have asked that a Swiss mother who is accused of stabbing her 10 month oldbaby to death should be given a prison sentence of 17 years. The woman had returned to Torrevieja from Switzerland with her baby who was suffering from a serious illness. The mother had declined conventional medicine for the baby preferring alternative methods. Following her arrival in Torrevieja the authorities were informed about the concerns of the Swiss health authorities and the woman and baby were taken by the Guardia Civil to Torrevieja hospital. In spite of having police guard, the mother took her baby into a bathroom to bathe him but stabbed him instead. The case is before the court in Elche.

Accident by Mercadona Torreta 2 “We think this choice splits the Cabinet and the Conservative party and will lead to a loss of a vote of no confidence in parliament, triggering early elections.” The team added: “In turn, we expect the associated political instability to drive weaker consumption and investment, and push growth to a standstill, leading the BoE to consider – but in the end decide against – easing policy to support growth.”

A driver was injured after a collision which occurred at midday on Sunday 5th November. The accident happened on avenida Miguel de Unamuno when the car overturned after colliding with another vehicle and then mounted the central reservation. The driver was helped out of the car by emergency teams who were soon on the scene. The driver had several wounds and was in shock but the fire engine that was in attendance did not have to release his from his vehicle. Suzanne O’Connell

Vela nightclub controversy continues HALLOWE’EN PROCESSION The allegations surrounding the Vela nightclub continue with the latest from the court proceedings surrounding noise from the venue. The judge was told by a witness that the equipment to limit the noise levels had been installed but wasn’t working for at least a year. The noise limiting facility had been installed in summer 2013 but it is claimed that it was not working. This is the latest in

the case that is being heard against Councillor Eduardo Dolón in which he is accused of delaying any action against the Vela Mata nightclub whilst he was mayor of the town. The noise limiting apparatus was not able to complete its function of limiting the volume in the club. However, it did record the level of noise emitted during this time, possibly without the owners being aware.

The activities of the club were eventually closed by the current local government at the town hall and sanctions imposed by the Valencian region. The evidence against the club was given by an acoustic expert in court. He also claims to have informed the Guardia Civil of this fact previously. During the time that the nightclub was opening it is alleged that no action was taken against it in spite of there being numerous complaints from neighbours about the level of noise. The acoustics expert had been called in during 2014 to investigate noise pollution with members of the local police. It is believed that on many occasions the level of music reached above 100 decibels when the maximum should have been 88. On one occasion even reaching 104. The expert also believed that the equipment had been tampered with before his visit. Such a high level of noise would have caused problems for neighbours not only because of the volume but because there was no sound proofing and there were glass exterior walls. Even after the equipment had been checked, the investigation showed that the limiter was tampered with again as the record registered sound levels exceeding those permitted. The case continues. Suzanne O’Connell

Burglars in court The Provincial Court of Alicante – which has its headquarters in Elche – put nine people on trial this week all of which are accused of being part of a criminal organisation dedicated to burgling homes in various municipalities across the Vega Baja. The Prosecutor is asking for punishments that range between three and five years in prison for several cases of robbery and one of illegal association. The robberies happened between 2009 and 2010 at homes in Torrevieja, Rojales and Orihuela, among other towns. The thieves usually got in at night when the residents were sleeping. From most of the homes they took vehicles (after finding the keys once inside the property), electronic apparatus and handbags.

IN TORREVIEJA Whether you agree with the growth of interest in Hallowe’en or not, the fact remains that many Spanish people have embraced the 31st October as another opportunity to dress up. It was evident in the procession around the main square and surrounding streets of Torrevieja. Hundreds of torrevejenses joined the procession which has become an autumn carnival. Costumes included witches, skeletons, clowns and lots of blood. The procession was accompanied by suitably spooky music and there were dressing up competitions, makeup workshops, storytelling and a mobile disco. Teenagers made the most of the excuse and carried out practical jokes and trick or treat. Local shops joined in the opportunity to draw people into the town centre too. Altogether 50 businesses offered children sweets and they could collect their own stamp in a zombie passport. When sufficient stamps were collected then they were given a free gift from the town hall. Alongside the procession there were a

number of free activities including make up in the Plaza de la Constitución, spooky storytelling and short performances and improvisations, all with a horror theme of

course. The prizes for best costumes were awarded to the infant and junior categories. Restaurants and bars joined in offering ‘Zombie’ menus and it is evident that Hallowe’en, traditionally more of an anglosaxon event, has joined those of the traditional Spanish fiestas, as one to mark each year. Taking care of the bats Bats don’t always get good press, particularly around Hallowe’en. However, they area species of animal that currently need protection, particularly as they can be beneficial for the environment. Bat conservation is just one of the projects that Torrevieja is currently implementing. The project is being led by Councillor Fanny Serrano and involves placing ‘bat boxes’ in strategic places. The programme so far has seen between 60 to 70 % of the boxes successfully occupied. The programme is now being extended with the placing of four more boxes with the collaboration of the Parque Natural de las Lagunas de La Mata and Torrevieja. This includes the placing of some shelters around the La Mata lake itself. The project will continue in the next few weeks and will include awareness raising days about the subject of bats. Councillor Serrano explained that the strategy includes the consolidation of existing colonies and creating new colonies in other parts of the town. The bats are particularly well established around the salt marshes of the natural park. Along with establishing new bat boxes, people have also been cleaning and re-fitting those boxes which aren’t currently occupied. In some cases the boxes find other inhabitants. Where nests have been built inside them, this prevents the bats from using the box too. In other cases boxes have not been set in a place that has attracted the bats and another location must be found. The second part of the project – to create new colonies - began last May with the cooperation of the IES Mare Nostrum as part of their programme ‘Nostra Natura’. As well as placing three shelter boxes at the school they will publicise the importance of the initiative and the vital role that these nocturnal animals have. Students will use technology to construct the boxes and learn more about them in a programme of talks about their biology and ecology. Raising awareness is an important part of the campaign emphasised by Councillor Serrano. This

includes providing information about the benefits of the animal. During the last few decades there has been a reduction in the bat population. This has been partly due to the loss of buildings in which their colonies have been housed and also because of the use of pesticides in agriculture. Maintaining the bat population is important as they feed off other pests that can be harmful to the environment. For example, they help to reduce the number of mosquitoes and other insects. A more natural way of control than the use of pesticides. Suzanne O’Connell

Local Police under investigation

Recycling success for Torrevieja

Torrevieja’s Local Police force are in the dock yet again for allegations surrounding their conduct. Last Tuesday, 31st October, two officers were arrested accused of extortion. The Guardia Civil has been involved in investigating a group of officers who have allegedly been involved in demanding money of between €6,000 and €40,000. They are accused of bribery and belonging to criminal organisations. Official notifications of what is going on are currently unavailable from the local government as they are waiting for further instructions from the judge. There are many questions to be asked about how this situation could arise in the first place. Particularly as the officers are well known and respected and have even received recognition for the work they have done as part of the police force. It should be recognised that the vast majority of police officers are hard working and trustworthy and that they do a difficult job in the circumstances. However, those that are tempted to use their position to their own advantage must be rooted out to restore the force’s reputation. Suzanne O’Connell

The campaign launched by Torrevieja town hall and Ecovidrio, seems to have paid off. This summer there was a 6% increase in the amount of glass recycled than the previous year. Altogether 852 tonnes was recycled and this almost doubles the national average of 16kg per person. The citizens of Torrevieja recycle a total of 2,434,340 kilos of glass which averages at 28.9kg per person. Councillor Serrano received the ‘Green Igloo’ award for having exceeded the glass recycling figure from the previous year. Councillor Fanny Serrano was congratulated for this improvement but it was also recognised that the success of the campaign is down to the efforts of the town’s people. Glass is 100% recyclable and can be constantly broken down and used again. It is the most recyclable container that there is. In total, 251 businesses and other organisations have collaborated in the summer’s drive. In particular the campaign reached out to the hostelry trade which generates 50% of glass waste that has only been used once. During the summer season it is responsible for 30% of the year’s waste. Ecovidrio is the organisation who has been working alongside Torrevieja town hall. Ecovidrio is a non-profit making group who are responsible for managing the glass waste in Spain. They have helped by providing more containers for recycling purposes and have drawn attention to 20 more by applying summer logos. They have also

delivered 72 boxes adapted for restaurants and bars and are trying to increase the frequency of glass collection. Altogether the recycling drive has had the participation of 80 coastal towns and more than 6,300 catering establishments nationally. Altogether

more than 27,900 tons of glass has been recycled and this as had the same impact as removing 4,500 cars from circulation. The winning restaurant overall in terms of recycling is Aponiente which is a two star Michelin restaurant. The head chef, Ángel León, is famous for his promotion of sustainability in haute cuisine and headed the campaign ‘Take note, recycle glass’. Suzanne O’Connell

WEEKLY EURO UPDATE The sterling’s week was dominated by the anticipation and arrival of the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) announcement on interest rates. The MPC voted 7-2 to raise the interest rate to 0.5%. The increase was widely anticipated, along with the result of the vote. During the hours before the announcement on Thursday, the pound fell 1.18% against the euro and 0.75% against the US dollar; it seems that the increase had already been priced into the pound and there were no more gains to be had at the confirmation. Earlier in the week, the pound had been boosted by signs that the Brexit process may be accelerated, putting an end to the current uncertainty. The EU’s chief negotiator Michel Barnier suggested that they were pressing the timeline as much as possible. The UK’s primary representative in the negotiations, David Davis, conceded to the House of Lords EU committee that "the withdrawal agreement on balance will probably favour the union in terms of the things like money and so on.” Despite the lack of a positive outlook here, the honesty and direct approach meant that pound wasn’t unduly harmed by the statement. Opposition minister Kier Starmer found an unlikely ally in Jacob ReesMogg when calling for the release of the government’s impact papers regarding Brexit, the motion gained support on both sides of the house and Davis will be under considerable pressure. It has not been the best week for the euro. The European Central Bank did just as the market expected, halving the scale of its monthly asset purchases to €30bn from January but there were no signs of when QE might end, causing a slight dip as investors assumed this meant it may go on longer than previously assumed. On Wednesday, the pound rose against the euro in anticipation of a UK rate rise and the euro also lost cents off

the dollar early in the week. Figures released on Monday showed Spain's gross domestic product expanding by a provisional 0.8% in the third quarter and France reported 0.5% growth in GDP, a figure which the Eurozone as a whole is expected to deliver for Q3 performance. The US dollar started the week on a high, gaining against the euro and the pound on the back of expectations of the announcement of the new Fed chair and a hope for progress on the budget bill. The Mueller investigation into Russian collusion handed down its first indictments this week but investors were more concerned about the phased approach to tax cuts, which had boosted the greenback. The nomination of Jerome Powell as Janet Yellen’s replacement as Fed Chair didn’t cause much surprise; though Yellen will be missed, the Republican Powell has served on the board of the Federal Bank since 2012 and is seen as a “business as usual” figure who will take a similar approach to his predecessor in gradually raising interest rates. The Canadian dollar did not have a good week and even the appearance of Superman Trudeau on Hallowe’en couldn’t break through the numbers. GDP contracted by -0.1% on the month, instead of growing as economists had predicted. Investors were unmoved by the Bank of Canada governor Stephen Poloz’ cautious tone, largely because it was what they had expected. The best news this week came from Down Under. The Australian dollar surged against the pound after the rate hike from the Bank of England sent sterling lower and New Zealand released positive stats showing that the rate of employment was down from -4.8% to -4.6%. This boosted the kiwi dollar, which has recently been stuck in the midst of political uncertainty following the election campaign and its outcome of a new, untested coalition.

Homes & Gardens

There are an awful lot of houses with high, forbidding walls in this part of Spain, turning homes in to fortresses. They are expensive to construct, need regular maintenance and do not deter a burglar if he has really made up his mind to get into your property. In fact it’s far more difficult to get over a prickly hedge!

Hedges are more eco-friendly, providing colour, and habitat for birds and bees. And whilst they give just as much privacy and protection from wind, they don’t make you feel imprisoned but rather close to nature. Another plus is that they change according to season, often creating all year interest. You can make hedges from a wide variety of shrubs and trees; Yew (Taxus) is a great favourite as it is slow growing - so you will need to ask your nursery for mature plants if you need an instant hedge. It needs to be planted in spring or autumn with about 50cm between plants. You will need to clip it in spring and late summer until it has reached maturity and then just one tidy-up a year in September will keep it in good shape. Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens) is another good hedging plant. There are a number of options, including ‘horizontalis’with a wide spread and the ability to make a thick hedge quickly. Myoporum, in Spanish often just called Siempreverde, is a fast growing plant with thick glossy leaves which does need regular clipping and gets rather leggy if left to its own devices. However, put it behind some iron railings to give it some support and it is a pretty, evergreen option with small white flowers in spring. Lantana camara is a very popular contender for favourite hedge plant. You can buy a variety of colours and plant them in a row so that the different shades overlap and entwine as it grows. It does need some maintenance, but will reward you with flowers for most of the year. A spiteful hedge with prickly sprays of long, scented flowers is Berberis.

It is a great intruder deterrent! Plant about 60cms apart and you will have a thick, impenetrable hedge which only needs a trim once a year after flowering. If your garden is very exposed, most of the plants already mentioned can form a windbreak, but if you want to include hedge within your garden to divide it up, or emphasize a particular feature, think about a fragrant, low-growing herbal hedge. Shrubby herbs are native to this climate, so Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis), Lavender (Lavandula) and Bay laurel (Laurus nobilis) are naturals. One of the most versatile herbs, Bay laurel can be grown as a tall evergreen tree, but lends itself to pruning, training, growing as an espaliered plant, or even as a bonsai style herb plant. Bay plants are very attractive with their waxy-looking olive green leaves, branches that can be trained to suit your taste, and flavourful leaves that will serve a valuable function as a versatile kitchen spice. Lavender and Rosemary obviously will not grow into tall hedges, but are ideal for defining an area of the garden. They smell wonderful and both produce blue/purple flowers in the spring. They like full sun and should be planted 30-40cms apart. Pinch out the growing tips to make them branch out. Lavender flowers can be harvested when they are freshly opened and dried, hanging upside down in bunches in a cool place. As your hedge is going to be a long-term part of your garden it is important to make sure you get it off to a good start. Do not plant too close to the house or a road - and remember to trim it back so that the pathway outside is safe for pedestrians. You should prepare the planting area in advance, digging it deeply in the early spring and then leaving it to dry and break up a bit for a few days. Dig a trench about a metre wide and put a good layer of compost or horse manure at the bottom. This encourages the roots to keep in their own territory and stops them wandering off to rob other plants of food and water. Finishing the border with a layer of organic mulch will help prevent weed competition and conserve moisture as the border plants grow together. Stake any thin or spindly plants and water well until they are established. After that most hedges need little extra water and will give you years of privacy and pleasure. Marc Vijverberg

WELCOME TO PORTO VENERE with Vivalia Travel

Portovenere is a town that lives mainly tourist trade, catering and activities related to tourist accommodation. The Regional Natural Park in Portovenere offers a unique landscape with its high coasts, caves and vegetation.

Porto Venere is a town and comune located on the Ligurian coast of Italy in the province of La Spezia. It comprises the three villages of Fezzano, Le Grazie and Porto Venere, and the three islands of Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto. In 1997 Porto Venere and the villages of Cinque Terre were designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. History The ancient Portus Veneris is believed to date back to at least the middle of the 1st century BC. It has been said that the name refers to a temple to the goddess Venus which was sited on the promontory where the church of Peter the Apostle now stands. The name has also been linked to that of the hermit Saint Venerius. In Roman times the city was essentially a fishing community. Territory The village lies at the southern end of a peninsula, which, breaking away from the jagged coastline of the Riviera di Levante, forming the western tip of the Gulf of La Spezia. At the end of this peninsula are three small islands: Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto; only Palmaria Island, which lies directly opposite the village of Porto Venere beyond a narrow strait, is partially inhabited. Climate The climate is typically Mediterranean, with almost no excess heat in summer and freezing in winter episodes. However, rainfall can be very abundant, especially in autumn and spring, due to the orography of the Riviera di Levante. In the municipal area, the weather station is located on Island of Palmaria, where data can be considered similar to

those occurring in Porto Venere and the surrounding areas. Economy In the municipality of PortoVenere, in Panigaglia, into the Gulf of Spezia, there is a regasification plant, thanks to which it can import by sea, in the liquid state, natural hydrocarbon gas such as liquified natural gas. Portovenere is a town that lives mainly tourist trade, catering and activities related to tourist accommodation. In recent years have become very important activities such as hotels, Bed and Breakfast, guest houses and residences. Very popular shopping promenade in the Doria quay and picturesque Alley and panoramic views to the church of St. Peter and the Doria Castle. The harbor of Portovenere, although the smallest of Liguria, in the summer season is always sold out and also host many celebrities. Main sights • The Gothic Church of St. Peter, consecrated in 1198. It was built over a pre-existing 5th century PalaeoChristian church, which had rectangular plan and semicircular apse. The new part, from the 13th century, is marked externally by white and black stripes. • The Romanesque church of St. Lawrence, erected in 1098 by the Genoese. It probably occupies the site of ancient temple dedicated to Jupiter. The church was damaged by a fire in 1340 and by the Aragonese attack in 1494, and was further restored in 1582. • The Doria Castle with the walls around the historic center. • The Grotta dell'Arpaia (now collapsed), known as Byron's Grotto,

from which the English poet Byron swam across the gulf of La Spezia to San Terenzo to visit Shelley in Lerici, in 1822. • The medieval nucleus of Le Grazie is set around the 14th-century Church of Our Lady of the Graces; nearby is a medieval convent, which once belonged to the Olivetans, and the remains of the 1st century BCE Roman villa of Varignano. Finds from recent excavations at the villa are held in the Antiquarium della Villa Romana del Varignano in Porto Venere. • In Fezzano the medieval alleyways are noteworthy, along with the church of St. John the Baptist (1740) and the recently restored Villa Cattaneo. Regional Natural Park The Regional Natural Park in Portovenere offers a unique landscape with its high coasts, caves and vegetation that permeates the atmosphere in any season with the changing shades of color. An element that blends and harmonizes every detail is the sea, sometimes calm and clear, so as to reflect like a mirror enchanted multicolored rocks and seagulls, sometimes rough and almost angry. To crown the Park archipelago with three islands of Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto, defying the blue sea in a swirl of aromas and looks towards the infinite. But the park is not only Nature, History dwells here since prehistoric times with the Cave of the Doves, until the recent past in which Guglielmo Marconi experimented in front of the village his innovative studies.

Regional health conference tackles GP shortages The National Health Minister Dolors Montserrat will meet with all her regional counterparts in Spain tomorrow, Wednesday 8th November to discuss the shortage of GPs in local surgeries, among other issues. This is the second meeting of its type held by Sra Montserrat in her year-long reign as head of the Spanish health authority, and for the first time, Catalunya will not be represented. Following the application of Article 155 of the Spanish Constitution, placing Catalunya under State rule, all its ministers have been sacked – and its Health Minister Antoni Comín is currently in Brussels with ex-regional president Carles Puigdemont and facing an international arrest warrant and extradition order. The GP shortage has been added to the agenda at the request of several regional health authorities, who are all waiting for the national government to launch a fresh recruitment drive for doctors and nurses to make up their dwindling local practice teams.

Just a week ago, the Spanish Medical Oncology Society (SEOM) warned that Spain needed at least another 200 cancer specialists to meet the current demand. Oncology departments in hospitals nationwide are overwhelmed and cancer doctors overstretched, the SEOM says. The society has requested at least a 20 percent increase in the number of oncologists across the country. And ironically, in the past five years, the Medical Colleges' Organisation (OMC) has received more than 15,000 applications for accreditation certificates needed by Spanish doctors to allow them to practice overseas, especially from young, relatively recentlyqualified medics who have had to go abroad to be able to work in their profession. The OMC criticises the fact that Spain has an overall doctor shortage, and yet thousands of qualified medics are leaving the country as they cannot get a job here at home. Also on the agenda is the issue of how to regulate the

administering of medication by nurses. A law change two years ago means that nurses are now permitted to give patients drugs which do not require a doctor's prescription – until then, they were not even allowed to give a paracetamol pill to a patient waiting in A&E who was in pain, even though these are available in any pharmacy over the counter. This has long been a bone of contention for nurses, who say they study the same pharmacology module as part of their training as doctors do. The exact types of medication and procedures to follow will be discussed at tomorrow's meeting. Other items on the agenda include the possible compensation for Thalidomide victims and a national strategy for ALS, or motor neurone disease. Recommendations for administering 'flu jabs, fund allocation for rare illnesses, routine checks, agency use and industrial purchases, and refugee assistance will be all discussed during the conference.

HALLOWEEN IS OVER & YOU’RE STILL SCARING THE BUYERS AWAY! Rebecca Serwotka Your favourite local property expert, of Inmobiliaria Real Estate Agents in Ciudad Quesada & published author of “Moving Forward – 25 Essential Rules For Buying & Selling Real Estate Without Going Crazy.” Request your FREE copy today!

You may have a home that you think you’ll have no problem selling, but are you overlooking some items that could scare your buyers away? And I’m not talking Halloween decorations! Reality is, it doesn’t take much to scare buyers away. So double check you’ve removed anything that could give a buyer the heebie-jeebies! Here are a few things we’ve come across during house hunting: 1. Too many locks – An excessive amount of locks on the doors sends out the wrong signals.Even if you’re the “better safe than sorry” type, this does put people off. Buyers will think they’re in a high crime area, and will not want to hang around long enough to find out whether it’s true or not! 2. Uncomfortable art – What you think is classy, others may not, and displaying nude photography can be a turn off for some buyers. Yes it’s displayed in the privacy of your home, but remember, when buyers are looking around, they are trying to envisage themselves living there. And how can they do that, if their eyes are too fixated on the art, and not the room? Many buyers will be offended. You don’t want the buyer to feel uncomfortable, you want to encourage them to stay! 3. Taxidermy – Everyone has different likes and dislikes, that’s what makes this world so interesting! But, when it

comes to animals, there is a fine line between someone liking to display stuffed animals, and someone taking instant offence. If you’re unsure whether to take down your hobby whilst your home is on the market, then the simple answer to that is, YES! You can box it up, ready to display in your next home. 4. Half done repairs – What you think looks good, someone that doesn’t know you, may not! So you’ve put hard work in making some much needed repairs around the home, but are you a skilled craftsman/woman? I have been in a few “houses of horrors” and by easily getting in a qualified handyman, would soon make these horror houses become “dream homes!” It shouldn’t cost too much to get the simple things fixed, like changing light bulbs, fixing kitchen doors and stopping that dripping tap, to make it look like your houseisn’t actually falling apart! 5. Unfriendly pets – No matter how much you love you beloved pets, not everyone feels the same. Some may have had a frightening encounter before, whilst others may have allergies. Either way, you need to keep your pets under control when you have a viewing appointment. This would be a great time to take them for a walk, or keep them in a pet carrier. It’s not for long, but buyers will appreciate your gesture, while giving them time to have a good look around. You want to make sure your home-selling efforts are not being overlooked, by something you can easily remove! For more information and guidance on buying and selling, please contact us and we will send you our FREE ebook or log on to: www.homes4u.es/new-kindle-e-book to request the link. Think property? Resplendent in scarlet at Zenia Boulevard

Following its recent launch in Benidorm the Poppy Appeal is now very much underway across the whole of the Costa Blanca and Costa Calida but nowhere has it been more colourful than on the Orihuela Costa where Chelsea Pensioners Wayne Campbell BEM and Skippy Teasdale have been doing a great job. After arriving back from Benidorm there was no let up for the pair who were out during the following weekend meeting and greeting at Zenia Boulevard. And what a draw they were,

resplendent in their world famous scarlet tunics, as the pair collected almost 600 euro in a matter of only a few hours. While they posed for dozens of photographs with individuals and families of all nationalities Wayne recalled that “Every poppy sold represents a life. That is why it is so important that we never forget.” The Royal British Legion would like to thank the management and staff at Zenia Boulevard for their continued support.

BUSINESS PROFILE

Tony’s Auctions go from strength to strength I t’s an Aladdin’s cave. Browsing inside the showroom before a Tony Firth Friday auction there is anything and everything for sale. From high quality antique furniture to modern pine tables and chairs; from candelabras to antique cameras. This auction house based in Calle Rojales, Los Montesinos, is bound to have that something you’ve been looking for. You don’t have to travel either to see exactly what’s for sale at their next auction. Look on their webpage under ‘products’ and you can see all the items by lot number and picture. If you want to find out more, the website and Facebook pages are a good place to start. You can download their catalogue or browse through the 200 photos. ‘In November we will have been open for four years,’ says Tony. ‘We’re delighted

with how popular it is and how it’s grown. Every Friday we have between 120 and 150 people here. It’s a great atmosphere. Last year we were on Bargain-Loving Brits in The Sun. It was a really good experience and great publicity for us.’ You can watch Tony and some of the behind the scenes at the auction house in episode one of the series. Many of the items are brought into the salerooms but Tony and his staff will also collect from your door with just a couple of hours notice. ‘I can come out to your home and take a look at what you have to sell. If you prefer I can make you an offer there and then. You don’t have to wait for the auction and it takes the gamble away.’ Tony has found that this option is popular with some people who want a quick sale and some immediate cash. Alternatively you can enter your item on a Monday or Tuesday for the Auction on a Friday at 3pm. ‘We have around 600

lots available each time,’ says Tony. They will do pretty much everything from house clearance to helping you get a good price for your antique furniture. ‘We do get lots of good quality items. Leather sofas, pine furniture. You can’t be sure what’s coming up from one week to another,’ explains Tony. ‘We also get some pretty unusual items sometimes. We once had Tibetan exorcism tools from the 1920s!’ Tony invites you to come along to auction day and see for yourself. If you’d like to check out what’s coming up in the Friday auction all you have to do is visit their website: www.auctionlosmontesinos.com Suzanne O’Connell

For more information you can also call 00 34 669 723 709 and speak to Tony

Economy shows buoyant Force will be used in Catalonia growth despite Catalonia crisis if 155 is disobeyed Spain’s economy continues to grow at above the forecast 3 per cent and its GDP is rising – despite the unsettled political situation in Catalonia, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INE). The year-on-year growth in the economy has remained at 3.1 per cent, based upon figures for the third quarter of 2017 – and although the disputed referendum had not taken place by then, the data included are right up to the day before it was held, when State and police intervention was well under way and Catalonia had approved its regional law on independence. This shows the separatist move has not as yet affected Spain’s growth, although the full impact of the referendum and Catalona’s powers being withdrawn through Article 155 of the Spanish Constitution will not be known until the end of December, when the fourthquarter results are released. Also during the third quarter (Q3), Spain’s GDP grew by 0.8 per cent - less than the 0.9 per cent in the second quarter (Q2), possibly due to Catalonia’s current issues, but still showing a 16th consecutive month of increases. The economy is now showing 10 straight quarters of growth exceeding 3 per cent and 15 consecutive months of overall growth, according to the INE, whose figures match those of the Bank of Spain (pictured) and the ministry for the economy. And despite Catalonia, the Bank of Spain continues to forecast ‘high-level’ growth in the economy in the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2017. The reduced Q3 rise in the GDP has been attributed to a slowdown in job

creation and fluctuation net trade income, in contrast to healthy development in both in the spring. Overall, the Bank of Spain predicts the GDP will have grown by 3.1 per cent over the course of 2017, which mirrors the government’s own forecasts. This said, GDP increase will slow to 2.5 per cent in 2018 and 2.2 perc ent in 2019, according to the country’s central bank, and to 2.3 per cent according to the government for next year, based upon the Catalonia crisis. This said, the AIReF forecasts a GDP growth slowdown to as little as 1.2 per cent for next year, but this still represents an ongoing increase which will, by then, have accumulated 28 months of consistent rises. Bank of Spain analysts believe national consumer demand will keep the economy afloat, together with favourable financial conditions and improved asset values. International trade will contribute 0.6 per cent to GDP growth in 2017 overall and 0.3 per cent in 2018 and 2019, these same analysts believe. Export growth predictions have become more cautious, but still show healthy rises of 6.4 per cent this year, 4.6 per cent next year and 4.5 per cent in 2019. Imports are expected to end the year on 5 per cent growth, with next year seeing a 4.1 per cent increase, rising to 4.2 per cent in 2019. This slowdown is due to a forecast increase in national demand fuelled by greater productivity within Spain’s borders, cutting the need for importing goods and services.

G

overnment spokesman, Iñigo Méndez de Vigo, told the British paper The Times that the Spanish Cabinet is prepared to use force, via the Mossos d’Esquadra, if there is ‘disobedience’ after the article 155 has been triggered. The Times concluded that the Spanish Government will use force if the protestors are ‘threatening public order’. ‘No Government can tolerate violence, but this Government has to assure the law must be obeyed’ said the British paper. Vigo denied the application of 155 would suspend the autonomy ‘we are trying to restore it’ he assured, adding ‘replacing the current heads of the Mossos and return ‘neutrality’ to the Regional Administration. Along the same lines, Development minister, Iñigo de la Serna, believes in an eventual calling of a new election which Puigdemont requested on television

recently, to ‘return the Catalan Govern and Parliament to normality’, and he reiterated that his Government does not want to use 155, but it is both their ‘obligation and responsibility’ to do so. De la Serna assured the Government’s plans regarding the self-governance and autonomy of Cataluña, and the rights of the residents. ‘There is nothing written about 155 and as a consequence we are trying to come up with a reasonable proposal’ he said. Health minister, Dolors Montserrat, noted Puigdemont could go to the Senate to challenge 155, and he had called on the independents who feel disillusioned to convince him the president of Cataluña ‘to return to law.’ If any of the Catalan councillors were unable to support their leader, she explained ‘when dining’ the possibility of a ‘unilateral declaration of independence’ then Puigdemont should ‘resign’.

SPAIN RANKED IN TOP TEN DESTINATIONS FOR EXPATS, UK FALLS 21 PLACES A recent survey by the Expat Insider ranks Spain tenth in the top destinations for expats in 2017. It rose six places from last year because of the excellent quality of life, friendly population, low costs, and a slowly improving economy. One British respondent puts it very simply: “We love Spain. The climate and the lifestyle suit us perfectly.” However, Spain did have the worst rank regarding work with two-thirds reporting it unsatisfactory. The survey asked 12,500 expats from 166 nationalities to rank their favourite countries according to family, friends and work. Bahrain, Costa Rica and Mexico are the best countries to live in, respectively. Bahrain reached number one as expats reported that settling into life in the Middle Eastern island nation is easy because residents can get by without learning the local language. The UK slipped 21 places from last year to 54. This is due to increased personal finance, cost of living and difficulty settling in. Yet career prospects were regarded very favourably.

Former Al Qaeda prisoner now promoting Daesh online in San Javier The man, who is the only Spaniard condemned for helping the terrorist cell in Nine Eleven, has been living in San Javier, Murcia since he was released from prison after serving nine years. However, it appears that the nine year punishment did little to rehabilitate the fanatic as Yusuf Galán, a native of Madrid was recently detained again by the National Police on the suspicion that he is ‘capturing, converting and training for Daesh terrorist organisation’ claimed the Interior Ministry. Galán has been until now, the only Spaniard to hold the dubious title of being condemned for collaborating with Al Qaeda, and forming part of a cell which was supporting the militias, led by Mohammed Atta, who organised the terrorist attacks against the Twin Towers in New York. These facts led to Galán to being detained in the Date Operation, and condemned by the National Court to more than nine years in prison. When he left prison in April 2011, he took a

property in Santiago de la Ribera, San Javier, where Murcia paper La Verdad found him and interviewed him a month later. ‘I have now a firm conviction for justice and peace’ he said affirming the Madrid train bombings had changed his view of reality. ‘I didn’t expect to see such brutality, and certainly not in my country’. Despite his wishes to live in peace and work inside village life, as he claimed, Yusuf Galán was kept on close watch by the State Security Forces. Perhaps they didn’t believe him, or maybe his violent past as a jihadist militant served to keep him under supervision. The Police detained him recently in Madrid for placing texts on the internet and videos calling on youngsters to join the radicals. Since being released, Galán became an addict to the internet and established his own blog which was still online after his arrest, and his obsession led

him to spend hours each day behind the screen of his laptop computer. He was also seen in internet cafes taking advantage of free wi-fi. Police doubted saving money was his aim, but rather that he was making an attempt to hide his tracks, connecting to different servers where he placed more ‘delicate’ material than on his official blog.’ ‘The detained, explained the Interior Ministry, had developed a sophisticated virtual ‘modus operandi’ to send massive amounts of jihadist propaganda across the world, hiding inside the deep internet. He had adopted several profiles, and used the freedom and encryption of instant messaging to reach a wider and younger audience. He attended many internet forums where he would comment and make suggestions by linking to and sharing content supplied by Daesh to promote the values of terrorism. He used his ‘intellectual training’ for

another pillar in his Jihadist strategies in explaining ‘how to use weapons of war and teaching secrets regarding combat’. He showed off videos with knives and showing ‘how he could play twist with them all in the premise to

recruit and adapt the commission of terrorism acts’ On his YouTube Galán can be seen on his patio roof in San Javier, showing his skills with a samurai sword.

New fire station discussed for Orihuela “Unhygienic” Orihuela Costa The Mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, Emergency Department Deputy, Jaime Lloret and Emergency Councillor, Víctor Valverde, met recently to analyse the possible locations of the new fire station for the city of Orihuela. The Mayor stressed “the need for a new fire station in Orihuela, since the current facility is more than 40 years old and located in the protected area of the Palmeral. He explained that the building is practically obsolete and that this has been a concern that firefighters themselves have been raising and complaining about for years.” Mayor Bascuñana added that “this measure, together with the completion of the coastal emergency centre, will provide the city with the best emergency resources to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all its citizens.” For his part, the Provincial Emergency Deputy stressed that this new secondgeneration fire station, which will be environmentally sustainable, “is part of the Provincial Plan for Emergencies,

reported to ombudsman

Recent meeting Infrastructures and Security, whose objective is to provide the necessary infrastructure to help the resolution of everything type of incidents in an emergency situation; this will be a sustainable park, with a heliport, suitable for the 21st century.” The Provincial Council announced a few months ago the construction of two new parks in the province, one in Orihuela and the other in Villena, in the image of the sustainable park built in Benisa.

During the meeting Mayor Bascuñana stated that “different locations have been analysed, their pros and cons, access and exit, supplies, etc. to be able to select the most suitable terrain place”. Finally, the provincial deputy of Emergencies stated that “the approximate roadmap is that by the beginning of 2018 the City Council cedes the land selected to the Provincial Council, so that by the end of 2018 everything can be processed and the tender dossier can be started”.

The Federation of Orihuela Costa Residents Associations (FAOC) has announced it will write to the Valencian Ombudsman, the Síndic de Greuges, and the National Public Health Department to complain about the unhygienic state of streets in the area’s urbanisations. They claim this is because “Orihuela Town Hall flagrantly violates the bylaw on street cleaning, hygiene, health and waste management”. Their letter to the Town Hall councillor Dámaso Aparicio says “despite our repeated complaints about the seriously deficient rubbish collection service and recycling containers, which we explained in the council meeting on 28th September, this anomalous situation still persists today”. The letter is accompanied by numerous photos taken during the recent bank holiday weekend when bins and recycling containers that are broken or have no lids can be seen totally full

and surrounded by furniture and garden cuttings. The FAOC said these photos were taken in different urbanisations, including Mil Palmeras, Campoamor, Aguamarina, Cabo Roig, PAU’s, Villamartín, La Regia, La Ciñuelica, Los Dolses, Las Filipinas, La Florida and Punta Prima, “which shows that the deficiencies in the service affect practically all of Orihuela Costa.” They say that the problem has persisted since more than two years ago and could pose a public health risk as well as a source of environmental pollution with important consequences.

Ticket number 00.155 sells out for El Gordo Requests from Christmas lottery ticket buyers for combinations ending in 155 have rocketed since the Spanish government threatened to invoke the Constitution article of the same number against Catalunya. Numerous lottery sellers say they take up to 60 phone calls a day from punters wanting to buy a décimo, or tenth of a ticket, for the famous El Gordo festive draw. Not only are customers in Catalunya seeking ticket number 00.155, but so are those everywhere else in Spain – including Andalucía, the Canary Islands, Madrid, Extremadura and Galicia. And in most betting shops, combinations ending in 155 have run right out. A high number of El Gordo buyers seek numbers they believe may be lucky, such as dates of birth of family members, the date their favourite football team won a major match, or even that of a natural disaster at home or abroad. But not even the year of the Royal wedding between the then Prince Felilpe of Asturias and TVE reporter Letizia Ortiz – now King and Queen of Spain – or the birth of their first child Leonor have seen such a run on one ticket number. Nor has the date of the Lorca (Murcia) earthquake, the worst in Spain in over a century, nor the date of Real Madrid winning the Champions' League attracted as many lottery number requests as Article 155. One lottery seller says that in his 50 years in the trade, he has never seen such demand for a single number combination – and that people all throughout the day from all over the country. The seller, based in Barcelona, said

a woman travelled specially from Tarragona, over a province away, to buy a décimo with the number 00.155. Another seller from Extremadura laughingly says he wishes he could take his phone off the hook, as he spends his entire day repeating to customers that numbers ending in 155 are sold out. Most were snapped up nearly three weeks ago, after the disputed independence referendum on October 1, when there was no real suggestion of Article 155 being triggered imminently, but it was beginning to be mentioned in the media for the first time since the Constitution was rubber-stamped in December 1978. Fortunately for lottery sellers fed up with repeating themselves that ticket number 00.155 has sold out, a high proportion of regular El Gordo players pick the same combination every year. A full ticket costs €200, but most people buy a décimo, or tenth, at €20 – the smallest denomination available, although buyers are not limited to one décimo and can have as many as they want. The draw takes place every year on 22nd December, with the children’s choir at Madrid’s San Ildefonso school singing the numbers as they pop out of the ball. Even where 23rd December falls on a weekend, notaries' offices remain open so that winners can collect their prizes where these exceed the amounts lottery sellers are allowed to hold on their premises.

Lidl fires employee for working too much A Lidl manager has been fired for working too hard. The man managed a Barcelona branch of the German supermarket chain until June this year when the company discovered he was committing the deadly sin of starting work before the designated time in order to “get the shop ready to open to the public”. Without clocking in, the man was “dealing with orders, changing prices and loading up entire palettes with goods,” according to the notice he received, informing him the company was letting him go. Lidl cites “serious breaches of contract” as the motive for his dismissal after footage on the supermarket’s security cameras revealed he was working extra hours. On several occasions in April 2017, he was seen to arrive at the supermarket a 5am and spend “between 49 and 87 minutes” working before clocking in, according to Lidl. In doing so, the man was guilty of infringing the edict that “each minute worked is paid, and each

minute worked should be registered,” the letter explained. Lidl also stated that it had received “complaints” from other members of staff after he had suggested to them that they

should also arrive early. In addition, on several occasions the manager was alone, something not allowed for security reasons. The man has worked for Lidl since 2005 and believes that his dismissal is unfair, prompting him to make a legal claim to be reemployed by the supermarket chain. In his claim, he has made it clear that he never obliged any member of staff to accompany him to open the supermarket. He has also stated that at no time did the supermarket suggest he should not turn up early to get the supermarket ready in order to

manage opening hours efficiently. His lawyer Juan Guerra, points out that if the former employee broke any rules, it was more to the advantage of the company than to himself. “Curiously, he is being punished for working too hard and making an effort to see that the shop runs smoothly,” says Guerra who adds that his client received no warnings over his behaviour. Meanwhile, the man criticizes the company’s “hypocrisy” as pressure was put on him to reach sales targets. He says that working longer and harder than specified in his contract was not something he often did, but something he was forced to do by circumstance, given that the supermarket had undergone restructuring just before the footage on the security cameras unmasked his ‘misdemeanors’. According to him, the directors were aware that the restructuring would take time and effort. “To reach the sales targets, it was necessary to work outside opening hours,” he stated.

Carles Puigdemont claims he isn’t seeking political asylum Carles Puigdemont has denied he is in Belgium to claim political asylum. But the deposed leader said he and seven Catalan cabinet ministers have travelled to Brussels indefinitely and refused to return to Spain until he had ‘guarantees’. Speaking at a Brussels press conference, Puigdemont said he and his officials want to highlight ‘the maximum belligerence of the Spanish state’. He also vowed to take part in the 21st December regional elections called by the Spanish government. “I am not here to claim political asylum. Brussels is the capital of Europe. I am here in order to act with freedom and security,” he said. “[We want to] denounce the polarisation of the Spanish justice system and show the world the serious democratic deficit that exists in the Spanish state.” Puigdemont went on to say he didn’t know how long he would say in Belgium. He would return to Spain ‘immediately’ if given guarantees of a fair hearing. Puigdemont added: “We are going to respect the results of the 21st December elections. “I want to ask the Spanish government a question. Are you going to do the same? I want a clear commitment from the Spanish state.” Puigdemont refused to say if he was

prepared to go for jail for 30 years after Spain’s Attorney General called for him and his ministers to be charged with rebellion and sedition. However, his minister Clara Ponsatí answered: “Would a fair trial have this as a reasonable outcome?” Puigdemont accused Spain’s prosecutor of ‘a desire for revenge’. Earlier, the Constitutional Court had cancelled Catalunya’s declaration of independence. Puigdemont went on to deny causing ‘chaos’ by calling the 1st October referendum, which the Spanish government saw as illegal. Around 900 people were injured following heavyhanded tactics from Spanish police on the day of the vote. “The chaos started on 1st October with the violence from Spain,” he said. The axed separatist leader will not return to Spain as there is a "good chance that he would be detained", his lawyer has said. Speaking to Dutch public newscaster NOS, Belgian lawyer Paul Bekaert said "as far as he told me that's not going to happen" when asked if his client would go back to Spain. "That's because we are awaiting further reactions from the Spanish authorities to see what's going to happen," Bekaert said, speaking by phone to the Nieuwsuur actuality programme. Puigdemont together with 13 other

former members of his administration, dismissed by the Spanish central government last week, has been summoned by the National Audience in Madrid. The body deals with major criminal cases. Arrest Spain's chief prosecutor said he was seeking charges of rebellion -punishable by up to 30 years behind bars -- sedition and misuse of public funds. But 54-year-old Puigdemont is now Brussels, where he surfaced after reportedly driving to Marseille in France and taking a plane to the Belgian capital. Bekaert said he believed "there is a good chance that Puigdemont will be detained" should he return to Spain. He added that an extradition request from Madrid "is not essential". "I have handled a large number of cases involving Spanish Basques and in those cases an interrogation simply took place here (in Belgium) with the local police," the lawyer said. Asked whether Puigdemont would face a fair trial in Spain, Bekaert said "it would be premature (to say), but that would certainly be an argument we would use at an eventual extradition request". At a packed and chaotic news conference Tuesday, Puigdemont said he was in Brussels "for safety purposes

and freedom" and to "explain the Catalan problem in the institutional heart of Europe". He denied that he intended to claim asylum but said he and several other

former ministers who travelled with him would return only if they have guarantees that legal proceedings would be impartial.

Spanish actor blamed for Melanie Griffith epilepsy Actress Melanie Griffith says the final years of her marriage to Antonio Banderas were 'so stressful' that living together 'gave her epilepsy'. “I never realised what was happening – the last two attacks I had were on board a boat in Cannes; I had a huge convulsion and I was taken to a doctor,” says Ms Griffith, 60. “Afterwards, we went back to the yacht and I had another. “When I returned to the USA, they told me I had epilepsy – something they'd never told me in 20 years.” This was back in 2011, three years before Melanie and Antonio, 57, finally separated. Her story is reported in the current edition of the magazine Lecturas, whose reporter Lola Seguí covered Melanie giving a talk on her condition at a meeting with a charitable foundation working for women's brain health. The foundation is also supported by Basic Instinct actress Sharon Stone, 59, who survived a brain haemorrhage 16 years ago. “Every attack I had was during extremely stressful moments,” Ms Griffith revealed. She said she went to a doctor regularly for tests, and was told it was 'an anomaly' and medics 'did not know what it was'. But the actress claims that after her 18year marriage to the Málaga-born star broke down, she 'started to recover', partly aided with medication for 'stress'.

“I don't feel stressed anymore,” Griffith confides. “Women look after the family, have husbands, a life, children to care for, a house to look after, and we work – I don't think I've slept properly in the last 35 years, and I still don't. My sleep cycle is totally wrecked.” Doctors have since confirmed that her epilepsy has 'disappeared'. “They did every test possible on my brain and couldn't find any epilepsy, or anything else to say I was ill, so it must have been the stress – my brain was a disaster, if you get me,” Melanie reports. Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith left fans stunned when their apparently rock-solid relationship broke up in 2014. They have a daughter in common, Stella del Carmen, 21, and Melanie's daughter Dakota – star of the film version of Fifty Shades of Grey – from her previous relationship with Don Johnson has always been close to Antonio, who considers her his own child.

Orihuela No compensation for arson nets €14 attack cars million from land sell off Councillor Rafael Almagro has announced that the Town Hall will obtain about €14.5 million from selling off municipal land, which was €2,606,000 more than the starting price at the auction. He said this shows a clear recovery in the construction sector, and noted the amount is almost 50 percent more than was obtained from a similar auction in 2013, “which will be reinvested to benefit residents”. Almagro explained that the sale of municipal land assets has specific destinations and before its final approval will have to pass the mandatory legal reports. The Councillor highlighted that the council has promised to divide the proceeds between the city, country villages and Orihuela Costa for financially sustainable investments. The list includes repairing roads and gardens and building a cultural centre in Orihuela Costa, building a cover across the AVE train tracks and restoring old areas of the city and creating cycle lanes in the villages.

Orihuela Town Hall's public liability insurance does not cover the damage to three Local Police officers cars which were targeted in an arson attack recently while they were on duty in Orihuela Costa. The cars were parked near the Town Hall in Playa Flamenca at the time. On last Friday 40 officers protested outside the Town Hall to support their colleagues which were attacked by "someone who chose to take justice into their own hands". The Guardia Civil are still investigating but they are convinced it was someone who was arrested and decided to take reprisals against the Local Police. Unions wrote to the Mayor saying the cars were parked in spaces reserved for the police and are "indignant" that no

compensation will be paid because the insurance considers them to have been in a public street. They said they have been warning that officers in Orihuela Costa are vulnerable to something like this and will carry on being so if things do not change. Councillor Mariola Rocamora said this is a "company decision" and the responsibility of a different department to check the conditions of policies. The police letter also criticised the lack of manpower and uniforms, deteriorating facilities and working conditions. Some Orihuela Costa urbanisations have more security guards than police, they said, and the area will continue to be an insalubrious unsafe place until the emergencies centre is finished in 2019.

Buried car found in Orihuela Costa A possibly gruesome discovery left builders gobsmacked one morning last week at the site where the new Playas de Orihuela school is being built in Orihuela Costa. Workers were moving earth when they found a block of cement buried underground. To their surprise inside it there were the rusted and eroded remains of a vehicle, which appears to have been there for some time. The workers immediately alerted the Local Police who came and called in the Guardia Civil who are now trying to clear up the circumstances behind this

discovery. A tow truck removed the car, which has a British number plate took it to a Guardia Civil station where the investigation, as is standard for situations like this, will check to confirm there are no human remains inside. It is not known how long the vehicle could have been buried underground or in what circumstances it could have happened. However, burying a car in concrete has definite criminal connotations and local residents are keen to know if the vehicle is hiding any suspicious secrets.

Dental problems can cause wider health issues Not keeping up with dentists' appointments can cause neck and back pains and infections, according to a Spanish medical director. Dr Estela Arias of the Vitaldent Medical Commission says about 30 percent of the population suffers sleep problems – either sleeping too much or not enough – some because their teeth are badly aligned, and others for different reasons which affect their dental health. “Sleep issues affect oral health, which

affects your overall health, since sleep is a necessary state for keeping your organism on an even keel,” Dr Arias explains. “According to the Spanish Sleep Sickness Association [ASENARCO], the average time we spend asleep has gone down by around 20 percent in the last century, which translates as two hours less per day – and can be seen clearly in bags or dark circles beneath your eyes, or in the shape of your face, whether it's very

long or very short. “These sleep alterations can cause unbalanced chewing when you eat, affecting your digestion and nutrition, leading to a habit of breathing through the mouth which can damage your dental hygiene by causing caries and gum disease.” One of the solutions proposed for correcting these problems includes neuro-muscular relaxation and realigning the teeth to obtain an optimum chewing function which 'stabilises neck and back muscle structures', Dr Arias explains. “You need to employ a form of orthodonics that solves chewing issues, teeth-grinding and jaw-clenching,” she says. If that does not resolve the problem, muscular pain increases and sufferers are more likely to hear their jaw 'creak' or 'crack' when they eat or yawn. In the long run, this situation can limit everyday activities because of back and neck pain, diminishing quality of life and even affecting the sufferer's job. Back problems tend to be recurring in these scenarios, Dr Arias warns – especially given that 80 perent of the population has suffered back pain at least once in their lives. This can be caused by crooked biting and chewing, and infections, which affect the muscles and make wounds and cuts harder to heal and more likely to recur or remain. “Hence the importance of acquiring good dental habits from a very early age,” Dr Arias advises. “If an adult has not developed these habits – and proper sleep habits - from childhood, it's very likely he or she will show poorly-positioned teeth when biting and chewing, leading to the jaw coming out of alignment and creating neck and back muscle contractions,” Dr Arias concludes.

Scientists at a Madrid hospital have discovered a protein which may be helpful in treating obesity in the future – an epidemic which currently affects 2.2 billion people worldwide, or over a third of the planet's population. Researchers from Salamanca University Hospital, Santiago de Compostela's Chronic Illness and Molecular Medicine Investigation Centre, Extremadura University, and the Carlos III National Cardiovascular Research Centre (CNIC) in Madrid have worked together under the latter's Dr Guadalupe Sabio and Dr Nuria Matesanz on this ground-breaking study, the results of which have been published in the magazine Nature Communications. The protein named MKK6 regulates the conversion 'white' fat into 'brown' fat, and decreasing its volume could reduce the former by turning it into the latter. 'White' fat is the 'unhealthy' variety which stores surplus calories, and obese people have a higher quantity of it than those who are not overweight. 'Brown' fat burns energy to regulate body temperature, or 'eats' fat cells to keep the body warm. The latter becomes activated by the cold and creates heat instead of storing fat cells, and 'white' fat can change into 'brown' fat if the body needs to warm up – but obese people lose this capacity to activate 'brown' fat cells, meaning they do not lose weight. Obese patients studied had higher quantities of MKK6 in their 'white' fat, which did not convert into 'brown' fat at

the same rate. Using laboratory animals, researchers found that giving higher doses of MKK6 stopped the white fat cells turning into brown, leading to the creatures piling on the weight. Rats with their MKK6 levels reduced had higher levels of brown fat and did not put weight on – in fact, they were protected from it by excess energy being eliminated in the form of body heat. And eliminating MKK6 from rats which were already obese stopped their weight increasing and led to their slimming down. The research concludes that the chronically-obese, who have not managed to reduce their weight to a healthy level through diet and exercise, could benefit from treatment involving reducing the MKK6 quantities in their white fat deposits.

ITV Sticker Colours and Placement The stickers used to indicate the validity of the ITV inspection, the Inspección Técnica de Vehículos, are colour coded on a threecolour cycle of green, yellow and red. So long as the vehicle is displaying only one sticker in the required place, the upper right hand side of the windscreen as you look out, traffic and police officers carrying out roadside checks can have a clear idea instantly, from afar, if the vehicle is displaying a valid sticker. Known as the V-19, “DISTINTIVO DE INSPECCIÓN TÉCNICA PERIÓDICA DEL VEHÍCULO”, the sticker indicates that the vehicle has favourably passed the periodic technical inspection and the date when the next inspection is due. The sticker is self-adhesive, designed to stick on the glass of the windscreen, but where a vehicle doesn’t have a windscreen, it must be placed in a clearly visible place. As well as the sticker, the ITV report is one of the mandatory documents which must be carried in the vehicle. In the event of the technician requiring repairs to be carried out, they must have been completed within the timeframe indicated. Remember, you must only display a single ITV sticker, not

collecting them every year, only the one which indicates that the

current inspection is valid. Mark Nolan

Halloween parade success Hundreds lined the main street in La Florida last Tuesday, as Orihuela Costa celebrated its first official Halloween Parade. Organised by the Department of Youth, Las Fillipinas Residents Association, Playas de Orihuela school, Romualdo Ballester Torrevieja, Sunrise Torrevieja, and Los Dolses school and IES Playa Flamenca- the parade saw hundreds of children dressed in Halloween costumes march through the street to the chilling

sounds of Thriller and Ghostbusters. Led by two ‘un-dead’ stilt walkers witches, ghouls, ghosts, devils, skeletons, zombies and a variety of monsters were let loose on the streets – accompanied by their parents and teachers - much the delight of the crowds. Not to be outdone, hundreds of adults joined in the fun, lining the streets to support the children and showing off some pretty cool costumes of their own. Despite the short length of the parade and the lack of bands, dancers or floats for a first event everyone agreed it was a huge success and are delighted that the Halloween Parade will become an annual event. Just as pleased as residents from the coast, were local businesses, which enjoyed busy bars and restaurants as people celebrated after the parade. In addition to the parade there was an afternoon market with inflatables and face painting for the children. The whole event brought together all nationalities from this very multi-cultural

community and the evening was one of eating, drinking, merriment and making new friends. The initial idea came from the Las Fillipinas Residents Association, with Councillor Mar Ezcurra turning the idea into reality. "In a multicultural area like this, we thought we could do a parade for the children of Orihuela Costa," explained Francisco Morales, president of the Neighbourhood

Association. He thanked the AMPAS (parent teachers associations) for their support. Halloween, although not a Spanish tradition is being increasingly embraced by younger generations and fits quite nicely with their annual public holiday on 1st November, known as the day of the dead. On this day Spanish families go to cemeteries with candles and flowers to say prayers for dead relatives to honour the deceased.

43 members and a couple of guests prepared themselves for an early start for the 2nd round of this season’s Captain’s Stableford competition. A cloudy sky and a few drops of rain brought back memories of a couple of weeks ago at Hacienda Del Alamo where we were rained off. However the skies cleared and the day presented us with perfect playing conditions. Now there is still a temporary green on hole 6 it plays around 130m the condition of this green is such that today it helped to make a record of 9 birdies on the par 3’s, 6 of these were on this little hole, it was also the place where for the first time that I can remember 2 members where exactly the same distance from the hole, adjudicated by Kjell Aasebo with his laser and confirmed that both players were 5,8m from the hole. It’s been mentioned that the

original green will be back in play early in the new year but this was meet with cries no no! from our membership, the rest of the course was in great condition as the results will show. Our “Viking” members seem to be hell bent on lowering their handicaps before our annual Viking Trophy that is to be played for later this month. Results: N.T.P.’s hole 4 N. Spaniol, hole 6, J. Tales from the Top Flight ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

All rise for the “Greatest Team in the World!” That’s Tottenham Hotspur by the way, who having beaten Real Madrid in the week were handed their crown by various media outlets in the forthcoming days. So, Roy Hodgson must have been quite happy come the final whistle at Wembley on Sunday afternoon.

to Croydon fully believing that Palace could well stay up this season (especially when you start to consider how bad some of the other teams are, and we will get on to West Ham in a bit). Tottenham’s stand-in goalkeeper, Paulo Gazzaniga, was also their man-of-the-match and if Wilf Zaha had rolled the ball into the open net having rounded the most Spursy named footballer ever, the story could have been different. Spurs to do the Champions League/Premier League double? Of course not, but they would have lost this match in the past. There is, of course, no real reason that the 3pm Premier League matches on a Saturday are not shown live in the UK (legally). However, the 3pm Premier League matches from Saturday were a very, very good reason not to show any more live football than we already have to suffer.

Roy Hodgson

There was a great post-match interview with Ron Atkinson back in the day. “Who was their man of the match?” “Their goalkeeper, Ron” “Well we can’t be that rubbish then”. Flip that around with the question, “who are the greatest team in the world” and you can assume that Roy has gone home

Four matches kicked off in the traditional slot and four goals were mustered by the collective might of Huddersfield Town, West Bromwich Albion, Newcastle United, AFC Bournemouth, Southampton, Burnley, Swansea City and Brighton. Four! And one of those went in off Glenn Murray’s midriff. Credit to the guys at Sky Sports though, they might have finally sussed that Sunday’s need to be Super and that the 12:30 slot on a Saturday normally kills any hope of two decent teams putting on a decent show. So the decision to whack Stoke City and Leicester City into the graveyard shift was wise as a match that would have been dull as dishwater later

in the day actually provided a bit of entertainment. Would it be wrong to take Peter Crouch to Russia next summer? England are bound to be struggling at some point in the group stages, and who do you think might make more of an impact off the bench - Crouchy or Danny Welbeck? Book the big man a seat now with some extra leg room. He might only need to play 15 minutes in the whole tournament, but what a 15 minutes they could be as England sneak past Iceland in the groups. Crouch scored a fine header against Leicester to make this a realistic proposal in my eyes. My eyes also finally cottoned on the fact that Shaqiri is clearly playing football in the wrong era. He looks like a throwback from the Hungary side of the 1950’s. Bookending Saturday’s action was the feast down at the Olympic Stadium, and boy did Liverpool help themselves at the all you can eat buffet served up by the ever hospitable Hammers. As I mentioned in my Saturday preview, Liverpool struggle against teams that can sit deep and defend well, therefore this match was the biggest away banker going on everybody’s betting slips. West Ham’s first mistake was sending people up for that corner, as 10 seconds later it was in the back of their own net. Slaven Bilic, as I have mentioned quite a lot recently, came across very well in his post-match presser, talking of “always being strong and facing the consequences” and “believing in himself and his team”. Slaven mate, the jig has been jigged. If you still have a job by the end of the international break then I will be amazed, even by the West Ham

board’s standards. The chat coming out of the ground after the match was that Slav was on his way out and David Moyes was on his way in. Moyes? That makes a lot of sense actually, if we are all living in “let’s get West Ham relegated as quickly as we possibly can” world. If Sullivan and Gold pull that stunt then I think the Hammers fans may as well start waving goodbye to the Premier League now. And, I did suggest a couple of weeks back that they were going down. If the board wanted to appoint a manager that plays awful football every week, why on earth did they sack Sam Allardyce in the first place? As for Liverpool, there were a few fans that labelled Mo Salah “just another Juan Cuadrado” ahead of his move to Anfield. By that, I can only assume they mean “another ridiculously talented footballer that Jose Mourinho cast aside for no real reason”. I have to hand it to Arsene Wenger. Every week he finds new and different ways to baffle the Arsenal fans. This week it was going to Manchester City with Alexandre Lacazette on the bench and Francis Coquelin at centre back. I know, right! It’s almost as if he is actually trying to get sacked. I grew up very used to seeing an Arsenal back four standing there, arm aloft, waiting for the flag to go up. This lot attempted to recreate the 1989 magic, the only problem being that the flag did not go up. 8 year-old kids all over the land turned to their parents in unison and said, “is that why you always say play to the whistle?” Yes, my child. Yes. In fairness, that was the first time the Arsenal defence had worked as a cohesive unit all afternoon, as they looked longingly at the lino hoping to see an offside given. Manchester City, as expected, won and were pretty decent. Don’t panic though, Arsene knew the real reason Arsenal had lost at a rival once more - in fact can we even still call them rivals? Wenger said after the match “we all know he dives very well” in reference to Raheem Sterling winning a penalty. All I can say to that Arsene is Robert Pires, and what would you have left if you hadn’t been Invincible? Not a lot, so be grateful for the odd little dive in the area, huh? It was nice to see that Jose Mourinho and Eden Hazard have cleared up their differences. Chelsea and Manchester United surprised the world with both teams starting the match as if they were trying to win, rather than avoiding losing. There is a lot not right at Stamford Bridge currently, but one thing that is working beautifully is Cesar Azpilicueta’s sixth sense when it comes to landing a cross on Alvaro Morata’s head. It was a fine, fine goal that led to Mourinho move swiftly to his Plan B, C and D - Marouane Fellaini, who must surely know Jose’s tactical plan for him verbatim by now. It almost certainly includes “and don’t forget to drop an elbow on one of their best players”. I give Gareth Southgate a fair bit of stick from time to time, but I thought it was decent of him to say he’d dropped Chris Smalling from the England squad due to the United defender’s “passing ability” rather than just saying what we can all see - the fact he is fast becoming a very, very bad centre back option. Yes, even worse than Francis Coquelin. I’ve decided that if I ever needed a manager to fight for my life, it would be Antonio Conte. Of course he is off to AC Milan very soon, but he is at his best in matches like we saw on Sunday. Barking, screaming,

bossing everything from the touchline he makes it look like he actually cares about Chelsea. Anyway, the real winners at the Bridge were Manchester City who now lead the table by eight points. Eight! After eleven games. Before the game against Watford, Everton’s caretaker manager insisted that “insults did not hurt” and “only defeats hurt”. Well, David Unsworth must have been more black than Blue following his first fortnight in the job. Admittedly, he doesn’t look like a guy that would let a few insults hurt him, like many a nightclub bouncer before him. Many sensible people, not Phil Thompson, Paul Merson, Richard Keys or Andy Gray for example, have suggested Everton could do worse than invite Marco Silva to take over (which would remove any chance of them embarrassing themselves in coming second in a race for David Moyes). Considering the Portuguese manager is on to quite a good thing at Watford, despite his team throwing away a two-goal lead at Goodison Park, I’d suggest he looks after his reputation and stays where he is. Englishmen and penalties under pressure, that never works out well. Tom Cleverly missed the chance for Watford to grab a point after all the drama by missing a penalty in the TENTH minute of injury time. That doesn’t happen every week. Who would have backed Everton to come back from two behind? Not many, but surely that cannot be enough for Everton to offer Unsworth the kind of deal that means he can give up the sideline evening work of debt collecting? To be fair though, that could be a turning point and it’s certainly one for the #RIPBritishCoaching brigade to chalk up. As for managers also looking over their shoulders whilst most of their failing players head off to the refuge that is international football, Tony Pulis and Manuel Pellegrino could well be next. WBA haven’t won in a very long time now, and playing a back five protected by three holding midfielders and then losing isn’t really what the Baggies fans want to see. As for Southampton, how much longer will they accept that their plan to bring in a more attractive style of football is pretty much on life support? Southampton are dreadful to watch, which makes me smile when I think back to how their fans moaned about last season. Wembley eh. Must feel like a long time ago now. So as we head into another international break everything could look very different in ten days time. Bilic may well have gone by the time you read this, David Moyes might have a job and Antonio Conte might still be screaming “come on” at the Chelsea fans. Will he do the same at Milan?

Antonio Conte

RODS & REELS Our 8th round of the Summer Series was fished

this week on the El Bosquet Complex on the 1st November. Temperatures were right down with a cool north easterly wind blowing, and the fish felt really cold to the touch, which has now brought the summer weights right down. Tony Mac had a great day to take top spot with over 16kgs, despite wanting to pack up an hour too soon as he had forgotten to alter the hour change to his watch, Bill Reade took 2nd place with 15.480kgs and I was 3rd with just under 12kgs 1st Tony Macmillan with 16.440kgs fishing the pole using maggot and corn 2nd Bill Reade with 15.480kgs fishing the pole using bread and maggot 3rd Terry Screen with 11.940kgs fishing the pole using pellet and maggot There are still some vacancies at the Club and if anyone is interested in joining please contact Bill Reade on 966790416 TIGHT LINES Terry Screen

PADDY’S POINT GOLF SOCIETY Two teams of 20 set off for Saurines de la Torre for the annual Chairman v Captain challenge match. Golfing conditions were ideal and the course in great condition. The match ended in a draw so Chairman Paul and Captain Rory were sent down the

19th to settle matters. After much banter and heckling Rory managed to secure the win. It proved to be a very sociable event especially back at Paddy’s. Thank you again Hazel, Rory and staff for your hospitality. There were no 2’s so the pot is

rolled over. Nearest the Pin winners were - Seamus McGearailt, Jim Fegan, Bridie Lee and Jimmy Kiernan. Longest Drive - Neal O’Dowd and Myra Coull. Our next outing is to Alenda, by bus, on 8th November.

Well hello there sport other than football. Finally you have decided to show your face often enough over the course of a week that it is worth putting pen to paper. How very kind of you. Shall we begin? Mo Farah “wants his kids to grow up in the UK” so is cutting all ties to the controversial drug cheating coach Alberto Salazar and leaving the USA. Farah wanted to make it very clear that he was not splitting from his coach because of all the drug doping allegations that have surrounded him ever since he suddenly started becoming quite good at running as opposed to being not very good at it at all. British Paralympians are currently facing governmental allegations that they have been winning all their gold medals unfairly. Michael Breen, father of former Paralympian Olivia Breen has called the current classification system “unfit for purpose” meaning that athletes might be competing in classifications they probably shouldn’t be. I know, I know. You are as shocked as I am that a

governing body, sporting or otherwise, might be doing things in a slightly underhanded manner to benefit themselves. They must be in the minority? I can’t see this happening anywhere else in the world. Lewis Hamilton won his 4th Formula One World Championship last weekend, with a solid drive in Mexico to seal the deal. Is there a finer British sporting role model out there at the moment? What do you mean nobody really likes him? Oh, because he actually wins things you mean? I know, the Brits really hate that don’t they. Especially when they seem focused and professional when they win, and not smiling and joking when performing at the most elite level you can imagine. I’d love to see Andy Murray and Lewis compare notes on how they feel they are perceived at some point. Boxer Anthony Joshua is probably hiding in a bunker somewhere as Deontay Wilder “declared war” on the heavyweight having seen off Bermaine Stiverne in the opening round on Saturday night. Granted, Wilder was pretty destructive and has won 38 of his 39 bouts in straight knockout so talk of a unification bout is quite exciting. Wilder laid

it on the line, and we wait to see whether Joshua will accept the challenge to put his IBF and WBA belts on the table. The All Blacks kicked off their European rugby tour by beating the Barbarians at Twickenham, 31-22. South Africa look very likely to host the 2023 Rugby World Cup. Some rugby facts for you there, as I am keen to move on to the Ashes. Jimmy Anderson was in the wickets in the first tour match Down Under, as Mark Stoneman and James Vince scored runs on day one. The two day match, purely glorified net practice to get England moving, ended in a draw against a Western Australia team with an average age of 22. Not a lot can be learned from the match, so let’s not get too excited yet. Australia smell blood in that English middle order, and there is every chance Moeen Ali may not be fit for the 1st Test with a side strain. It’s all positive so far, eh?

A STROLL IN THE PARK After the events of the previous week, where boats were capsizing and being blown onto the rocky reef, this week, October 29th, seemed like a stroll in the park. Race Officer John Down was scratching his head as to whether a race was even possible as not a ripple could be seen on the Mar Menor. By 11 am there was just a sign of wind and Martin and Steve were dispatched in the support boat to lay a triangular course. By 11.40 there was enough of a breeze to get the race under way, a great sight as 11 boats made their way to the start. Unfortunately for Janice and Derek, the crew of Mistral, they couldn’t make the start line as they

discovered their boat had suffered damage after going on the reef the previous week but, new guest sailors Esther and Jesus, aboard their F18 catamaran, did compete. In the light winds the single handed boats soon developed a substantial lead whilst the 18ft and 21ft Balaton Group boats struggled to get around the course. The race was shortened to 3 laps giving the widespread crews the chance of some quick refreshment ashore before the afternoon race. For this the course was set as a figure of eight and now, with the wind picking up, the boats rushed to get to the start line. Ashore it was good to see Bob, with his newly acquired Laser 1 (single

hander), feverishly preparing it and getting it on to the water for the first time in time to join the race. From the control tower our time keepers Carol and Rosie kept a close eye on the boats as they dodged and weaved through what had become a challenging course. As the results show the winds favoured the lighter boats but the day was enjoyed by all. The results were Morning Race: Topaz Duo, Julian Singleton. Shoestring Tres, Tug Wilson. Hartley 12.2, Don Clarke. Afternoon Race: Topaz Duo, Julian Singleton. Shoestring Tres, Tug Wilson. Shoestring Uno, Dianne Hardwick/Vernon O’Byrne.

Friday the 3rd November we played our monthly stableford competition at Alicante golf course. As usual it was a pleasure to play at this Seve designed course which has six par threes, six par fours and six par fives. Although the course was in good condition some of the tees needed cutting but had probably been left uncut for reasons known only to the greens staff. The course was also still damp from the overnight rains which made things more difficult as we were not getting much run on the ball making the course play longer . Onto our results: the NTP competition were taken by on hole three our new member Paul Satterthwaite; hole six by Tim Goldsmith; the eighth was won by John Rush; Martin Collins took the twelfth and Helen Beddows won the fifteenth and the seventeenth all received a sleeve of three golf balls. The BF9 was won by Dave Owen with sixteen points and Ian Allison took the BB9 also with sixteen points. Both received a bottle of Rioja wine. Our two’s competition this week had two winners - our new member Rob Ashman had a two on the third hole and Helen Beddows had a two on the fifteenth hole - they shared the pot of twenty euros. In third place with twenty seven points was Helen Kinchella receiving a bottle of Rioja wine. Helen Beddows came second with

thirty four points winning Rioja red and white wine and our winner on the day was Martin Collins who took home a bottle of Smirnoff Vodka. Our card winner this week with Man U was Ian Allison. Finally can I once again take this opportunity to thank Rik ,Lisa and the Staff at Quesada Mini Golf Bar, for looking after us on our return to the bar for our presentation and providing us with an assortment of sandwiches and snacks that were followed with a couple of the bars sensibly priced beers . Busters Golf Society is a small friendly group of likeminded people who play on the first Friday of the month. Depending on the time of the year we generally have between sixteen and twenty four players. Over the five years since we first formed the society, some of our original members have moved on either returned to their country of origin or have ventured to pastures new, so we are looking for a few more members to swell our ranks , if you are interested in joining our society (it’s free) then please email me Barry Grinsell at bustersgolfsociety@hotmail.com quoting your phone number and current handicap and I will get back to you within a couple of days . In the Enterprise Division the Apollos visited Montemar Matadors and despite three rinks only losing by narrow margins of 2,3 and 4 shots this was the closest that the team came to picking up points. The overall margin of loss being 121 shots to 73. The Pioneers at home to second placed San Luis Vulcans in the Voyager Division had plenty to play for and although only 3 shots separated the teams after 9 ends the Pioneers came strong in the second half of the match to record a win by 120 shots to 81 and with 4 winning rinks and further recording a draw they took the match by 11 points to 3 and replaced their visiting opponents in second place in the League Table. The largest margin of victory came from Sue Mahomet with Sheila Millward and Pat Reilly by 218.Excellent wins were also recorded by

three other rinks whilst thanks to some good bowling on the final end by the rink of Tetanya Oliver with Jack Burrell and skip John Clarke an excellent 13 all draw was recorded. Our Winter League team travelled to La Marina and managed 3 points to their opponents 9.The overall shots being 69 85. The winning rink for La Siesta was Pat and Trish Reilly with Mike and Florence Edwards winning by 22 shots to 8. Pat Moore, Dave Laverick, Tony Dalton and Alex Morrice managed to obtain a draw 15 shots each. The Blues travelled to San Miguel Cougars and in a close match with each team winning on three rinks it was the Cougars who came out on top by 92 shots to 84 thereby getting the 8 match points to La Siesta’s 6. Winning rinks for La Siesta were Dawn and John Taylor with

Brian Harman 27-10,Pat Moore with Dave Blackie and George Richardson 19-11 and Dave Davies with Irene Mangan and Pat Harman 17-13. The Golds entertained San Luis Pumas and won by 132 shots to 67 thereby gaining 12 points to their opponents 2.Best winning rink was Dennis Andrew with Sue Mahomet and skip Jack Burrell winning by 37 shots to 6.They were followed by Jean James with Rod Edgerton and skip Pat Reilly winning by 25 shots to 12. With three other rinks picking up excellent narrow results which could have gone either way until the final end and the other rink losing narrowly this resulted in an excellent result for La Siesta.
