Disabled man dies trapped in Torrevieja fire he man was unable to escape from the fire at his home due to the bars on the entrance to the flat. The barred gate, which restricted access, prevented the rescue of the 70 year old man who was disabled and needed a wheelchair. Three local police officers and six Guardia Civil were taken to hospital with inhalation of smoke during the rescue attempt. The fire broke out on Saturday, 13th May at 2.45 am in a fifth floor apartment in La Tejera building in street BazĂĄn de Torrevieja. When the ambulance arrived it could only confirm the death of the man. Pedro was born in Madrid and had lived alone in the flat for some years according to his neighbours. He suffered from diabetes and had had a leg amputated and for this reason he

with serious burns. Attempts were made to resuscitate him once the services were able to enter. The wheel chair that he used could also be seen, destroyed by the fire. Attempts were first made to access the fifth floor from the balcony on calleTomillo and ladders were brought on a truck to enable this. However, the flames were too high and smoke prevented the rescue services gaining entry from this direction. The fire totally destroyed the interior of the property. The cause of the fire is currently being investigated and the fire brigade did not leave the flat until after 5am, once all the flames had completely been extinguished. This is isn’t the first time that a fatal fire has occurred in this building that includes 150 homes. Suzanne O’Connell

was forced to use a wheelchair. Neighbours called the emergency services immediately after hearing the shouts from the man asking for assistance. They could also see the smoke coming out of the house. Neighbours, Guardia Civil,

Local Police and health services tried to extinguish the flames using fire extinguishers locatedin the corridors of the building. The victim continued to shout for help from inside but rescuers were unable to reach him.

The problem was that the grill barred entrance to the property and Pedro could not find the keys because of the smoke. Only on the arrival of the fire brigade could entry to the building be forced and the man was already dead in the bathroom

BITE SIZE Budget insult again NEWS: for Orihuela Costa A new base for the GRO

Market day for the church On Wednesday 31st May there will be a Market Day with Shoe Amor and La Siesta Church. The event will be held at Casa Ventura in San Luis and will begin at 10am to finish at 3pm. There will be a variety of stalls available including home-made cakes, shoes and sandals, bags and fashion,a bottle stall, jewellery and Continued on page 5

The Popular Party-Citizens government has produced a draft emergency budget to be approved this week providing for what they call ‘priority investments’. Nearly half way through the year, the budget for 2017 has still not been prepared. The priority investments in fact respond to the government caving in to pressure from traditional voters in particular from La Aparecida, a 2,000 people village some 15 minutes from Orihuela city which has an unfinished multi-million euro civic centre. Therefore, €900,000 of the €1.3 million emergency budget will go to the cost of finalising the civic centre of La Aparecida

and €200,000 will go towards building a sports complex in another small village, Molins. Around €57,000 will be spent on fixing the drains in a city street. And Orihuela Costa? Orihuela Costa will “get” €18,000 of the €1.3 million to pay for technical modifications which need to be introduced to the project, still years away, for our Emergency Services Centre. Local political party CLARO is furious about the continued lack of funding: A spokesman said: “This is a ‘real’ priority project, which will be financed by the

Valencia regional government, not by Orihuela Town Hall and has been delayed for 10 years. It has denied us proper emergency services such as a local police service operating 24 hours a day, space for La Guardia Civil which are located at present in Pilar and an emergency fire service which is presently located in Torrevieja. “A civic centre in a small village near Orihuela is apparently a much greater priority than the multitude of needs of Orihuela Costa with a population equal to the city of Orihuela. We desperately need clean streets and properly maintained parks and gardens no to mention other services and facilities including the crying need for a cultural centre providing facilities for music, theatre and space for social groups. Just €18,000 of a budget of €1.3 million is an insult. It represents just 1.4 percent of the special investment budget. It makes a mockery of the commitment made in the 2012 budget, drawn up by the present Citizens party leader, Mr.Lopez Bas, and supposedly supported by all parties, to devote 40 percent of investment to Orihuela Costa in recognition of the historical investment deficit from which the coast has suffered and implicitly, although this is never stated, in recognition of the fact that the taxpayers of Orihuela Costa provide some 60 percent of the revenue of the municipality of Orihuela.” CLARO believes that 1.4 percent of the special priority investment budget shows just how low a priority are the needs of Orihuela Costa for this Popular Party Citizens government.

The GRO or Grupo de Refuerzo Operativo are a section of the Local Police that are brought in to reinforce the police service at key times. In order to operate efficiently, they need to have a base and it has been intended for some while that this should be the casilla de los peones camineros However, in order to enable this to happen the mayor has paid out of his own pocket the sum of €691,36. This is an outstanding tax payment that was preventing the officers from moving into the new premises. The building had been restored already at a cost of €120,000 and had originally been intended for use as a tourism office. However, this did not happen and since then it has remained empty because of the outstanding bill. Settling this himself is an unorthodox way of getting things moving but the mayor has no regrets. ‘Summer is here,’says the mayor. ‘And so is the need for this facility. Now there is nothing preventing it.’ The GRO are currently located in La Siesta at a cost so the move to the new building will mean a saving to the town.

Off to the market BITE SIZE It was a slightly overcast Friday on May 12th but it was a landmark day for Torrevieja’s Friday market. This was the first time the market had been held on its new site on the Avenida de DelfinaViudes, next to the Aquopolis water park and opposite Oz. One of the concerns that traders have had is that people might find it more difficult to access the new venue. The advantage of the previous site was that it was right in the centre of town and traders were concerned that this new site, without its central position, would not attract as many customers. I went to test out their concerns by trialing the new bus route. There are two

ten minutes we’d travelled from the centre of town to the new site. When we arrived we could see we were definitely swimming against the current as there was a long queue waiting for the bus back. Stepping off the bus, the layout was immediately impressive. If you’re not a fan of the bustle of street markets then you might find that the new site offers an alternative. You still have all the stalls and traders but they aren’t cramped one on top of another. For some this will mean a lack of atmosphere. For others, respite from a claustrophobic scrum of shopping trolleys. The new market benefits from being purpose built and there are brand new toilet blocks and even a small playground for children. Noticeable are the number of Guardia Civil and Protección Civil available. Councillor Manzanares, is the person responsible for the move on behalf of the town council. He was pleased at the way this first day had gone, although a little tired after arriving at the site along with the first traders in the morning. ‘We’ve had plenty of people turn up today,’ explained Councillor Manzanares. ‘More than we expectedand although there have been some teething problems, overall I’m pleased with how it’s gone.’ The teething problems have largely been to do with car access to the site. The small roundabouts on the main route in to the market became very congested and there was a similar problem on the way home. ‘We will talk with the police about this,’ says the Councillor, ‘and see what different arrangements we can make. After all, it is the first day.’ Walking around the site, what was disappointing was the amount of litter in spite of there being plenty of rubbish bins around. Meeting with the cleaning service was the councillor’s next task for the day. It should be more difficult for thieves to earn their living there. The police presence is more obvious and the site more

that makes a detour to the market. Of course, this is only the case on a Friday. I went with Councillor Carmen Morate who was keen to see for herself too whether this historic day would prove to be a success or not. We arrived quite late in the morning at one of the stops next to Hotel Fontana. The bus runs every 30 minutes from 7.30am and we were lucky to catch it. At this time it wasn’t very busy, but then there aren’t many people who set off to the market shortly before it is due to close. It was a smooth journey and in around

contained. With fewer people pressed together on narrow pavements it’s possible that this one will challenge the reputation that markets have acquired of being heaven for pickpockets. The move for Torrevieja market was long anticipated and some thought it would never happen at all. No doubt every person visiting today will have their own take on whether it has been a success or not. What everybody should do is at least try it once and make their minds up for themselves. homemade marmalade. High quality refreshments will be available all day and it is expected to be an enjoyable and wellattended event. Money raised will help support the Anglican Chaplaincy of St Peter & St Paul, Torrevieja.

Torrevieja renews its blue flags Torrevieja has renewed its five blue flags ready for the summer. The beaches which have received this important award include Torrelamata Sur, Los Locos, el Cura, Los Náufragos and CalaPitera. The councillor for beaches, Javier Manzanares said, ‘These awards have come after we have experienced three significant storms during which our beaches were particularly badly affected.’ The councillor has thanked all the councillors that work throughout the year to ensure that the beaches stay in a good condition.

Elvis Tribute This is a tribute performance with a difference as it will be performed at the International Auditorium in Torrevieja by the Unión Musical Torrevejense and John Mencis Band. The show is on 20th May from 7pm and tickets are available from the cafe TerrazaCaballete next to the Municipal theatre in Plaza Miguel Hernández from 11am to 1pm every day. It is described as a ‘symphonic’ tribute to Elvis 40 years after his death. The John Mencis Band aims to recreate Elvis’ performance in the 70s and use the repertoire that Elvis used in his concerts across the United States. It’s also a time of celebration for the Unión Musical Torrevejense as it is their 175th anniversary.

More works to address flooding problems Councillor Domingo Soler in a press release announced that there would be more work done to solve problems associated with flood water on the Polígono Industrial Casa Grande. The area is vulnerable to flooding during periods of heavy rain and this causes difficulties to local business and passing traffic at it is often necessary at these times to close roads and divert traffic. The work will begin shortly and there will be some temporary disruption whilst it takes place. Addressing the issue of flood water and the damage it causes has been a major concern for Councillor Soler.

Fire in Guardia Civil barracks A fire broke out late at night on Friday in a Guardia Civil barracks in Torrevieja. The warehouse contained a lot of material including transmission equipment, cartridges and ammunition and some weapons. The fire occurred at 2am and firefighters were soon on the scene to extinguish the flames before they reached Continued on page 6

Spanish businesses BITE SIZE affected by global NEWS: cyber attack Spanish Intelligence services say a ‘high number’ of national organisations have been affected by Friday’s global ransomware attack which has effectively shut down the NHS in the UK with doctors unable access patients’ records. National communications giant Telefónica has been hit by the international hack attack, but stresses its customers are not likely to have been affected. The firm has banned the use of its computers for the next few days, sending all workers home and telling them to ‘disconnect and remove the battery’ from their own laptops, tablets and phones. According to the National Cryptological Centre (CCN), part of Spain's National Intelligence Centre (CNI), the malicious software affects Windows systems, and says Microsoft had already warned later versions were vulnerable. Various media have claimed that Vodafone, the BBVA bank and Capgemini have also been hit, but all three have denied being affected by the massive cyber hack. The rogue programme was sent via email and activated by clicking on a link. Once opened, a message came up claiming all files were encrypted and the only way to decode them again was to make a payment, whilst warning the user that they ‘did not

have much time’ to do so. The CCN says the ransomware is ‘a version of WannaCry’ and affects Microsoft systems including Windows Vista SP2, Windows Server 2008 SP2 and R2 SP1, Windows 7, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012 and R2, Windows 10, and Windows Server 2016. Microsoft issued an alert two months ago and recommended updating operating systems to the latest version or, if this is not possible, isolating the system from the internet or switching off. The ministry of energy, industry and tourism claims customer services have not been affected by the ransomware hack, despite firms’ inability to access files and staff being sent home. It also insists that there is no risk of personal data being compromised. However, ‘as a precaution’, all national government bodies have switched off their computers. Cyber-security firm Avast said it tracked more than 75,000 ransomware attacks in 99 countries Friday. European police agency Europol said it was working to support countries, saying the malware attack was at an "unprecedented level and requires international investigation."

Continued from page 5 other facilities. The warehouse is close to the living quarters of some police officers. Since the fire, it has been argued that the warehouse should not be used to store such inflammatory materials, particularly as they lack sufficient fire precautions. For example, there is no ventilation system or smoke extractor. This isn’t the only Guardia Civil facility that is considered to be lacking. There are also concerns about barracks in Callosa de Segura where there have been reports of mice and cockroach infestations. The AUGC is the Guardia Civil’s union and they have raised concerns about the safety of their members.

Concerns about the Palacio de la Música Following the incident of a falling stone from the box office outside the Municipal Theatre, more concerns have been raised about another public building in Torrevieja. This time it’s the Palacio de la Música with parents being anxious that this could also suffer from falling masonry. In response to their concerns the fire brigade checked the slates on the roof to ensure that there was no danger of them falling. The building also requires renovation and the local government has recently put the contract out for this to tender. The Palacio was opened in 1999 and so far ten bidders have put forward their proposals for its renovation. The Palacio includes classrooms,a small auditorium and a café. Many students have their music lessons in the building. Suzanne O’Connell

European Charity Casino Championship night at Black Bull of Irish dancing On Sunday 28th May Torrevieja is delighted to be hosting the 2017 European National Championship of Irish dance. The event will take place at

the Hotel Playas de Torrevieja (formally Cabo Cervera Hotel) and this is the 8th time that the hotel will have hosted this annual event. It is the 15th year of the championship and the competition will be judged by a panel of very experienced adjudicators. It is being organised by Rose FitzGibbon, Stella Moore and Julie Ann Fletcher-Redfearn. The categories of dance in the competition include Intermediate, Open, Ceili and Figure Championships. The timetable is currently provisional and spans two days; Sunday 28th May and Monday 29th May. On Sunday it is anticipated that there will be six children’s groups for the under 12s and performances for teenagers and seniors will take place on the Monday. Dance Academies take part from England, Northern Ireland and Eire and it is a good opportunity for them to demonstrate what they have been practising during the rest of the year. For those travelling from the UK it’s also about mixing the competition with pleasure and enjoying the Spanish weather whilst they are here. Suzanne O’Connell

The Black Bull at Torremendo is hosting a charity night on Saturday (20th May) raising funds for Paul Cunningham Nurses and Huntington’s Disease. The ‘Casino Royale’ event includes a live entertainment with Rees and a buffet - and guests are invited to dress to impress whilst they play the tables. Popular gaming tables such as roulette and black jack will be available for guests to try their luck but it is a win-win situation as the money guests spend on the gambling chips will be converted into euros and donated to the charities. The person with the most chips at the end of the evening will also win a prize.

This is the second charity event held at the Black Bull in aid of Paul Cunningham Nurses. Co-owner Richard said: “The reason we want to raise for this charity is because we have seen so many friends, relatives and parents die and believe that to be able to live your last few weeks with dignity means a lot to the person and their loved ones.” “We are also raising money for Huntington’s Disease we know someone who suffers from this who is a customer and a neighbour.” Tickets for the event are prices at 15e which includes the buffet and can be reserved by calling the Black Bull at Torremendo on 966194194.

Opposition to change of mayor When Torrevieja town council first formed a government it was agreed that the position of mayor would be shared between José Manuel Dolón and Councillor Fanny Serrano. Councillor Dolón would hold the position for the first two years and Councillor Serrano would take over for the final two years. This sharing of responsibilities was considered important because the council consists of representatives of different political parties, including Los Verdes and PSOE. They were prepared to shelve any political differences in order to present a feasible opposition to the previous PP government. Fanny Serrano represents the socialist group PSOE whereas the incumbent mayor, José Manuel Dolón, is from Los Verdes. Now, Domingo Soler, councillor for the APTCe, is arguing that instead of swapping over mid-term, Dolón should continue as mayor for the remainder of the four-year period of office. Soler argues that the situation now is different from that when the government was first elected. Following

the May 2015 elections there were five parties represented, now there are four and only ten councillors. The two Sueña councillors decided to leave the government earlier this year and become independent. Soler claims that these changes require a reconsideration of the original decision to share the mayor’s term of office. Councillor Soler observes that if José Manuel Dolón does resign then Councillor Fanny Serrano would not get the votes needed and there could be a risk of Eduardo Dolón, the PP councillor being re-elected. Councillor Serrano has become well-known during the past two years for her outspoken and uncompromising approach to closing illegal buildings. She has also taken a keen interest in many local environmental projects and speaks very good English. If she becomes mayor of Torrevieja she will be the first woman to hold this position since Rosa Mazón Valero in 1979. Suzanne O’Connell

Costa Blanca People General Election Fact Sheet Who can vote in the General Election on 8 June 2017? Any British citizen who has reached the age of 18 can register as an overseas voter for up to 15 years after leaving the UK as long as he or she was registered to vote in the UK within the previous 15 years (or, if you were under the age of 18 when you left the UK, if a parent was registered to vote within that time). Am I already registered to vote as an overseas voter? An overseas registration lasts 12 months. You must renew your registration each year. If you are not registered to vote, you will need to register by 11.59pm on Monday 22 May in order to vote in the UK general election on 8 June 2017. Register to vote online any time at gov.uk/register-to-vote. If you're not sure whether you are registered to vote, check with your local Electoral Registration Office (see https://www.yourvotematters.co.uk/register-to-vote/find-your-localauthority). How do I vote? As an overseas voter, you can vote by proxy or by post. By proxy: You appoint someone to vote on your behalf. We recommend voting by proxy rather than by post, because some postal votes might not reach you in time for you to complete and return them by 10pm on Thursday 8 June. Your proxy will be sent a proxy polling card telling him or her where and when to vote. You must let your proxy know how you want them to vote on your behalf, for which candidate or party. If your proxy cannot get to the polling place,he or she can apply to vote for you by post. They can apply to do this up to 5pm, 11 working days before election day. Your Electoral Registration Office can give you more details about this. By post: If you choose to vote by post, please make sure

you have time to receive and return your ballot papers by 10 pm on Thursday 8 June. Ballot papers will be sent out from the 12th of May, but to check when your council will start dispatching postal voting packs, contact your local Electoral Registration Office (see above). The forms for voting by proxy and by post can be downloaded from www.yourvotematters.co.uk. Once you have completed and signed the appropriate form, return it to your Electoral Registration Office. Some offices accept scanned copies sent by e-mail, but please check first. Once your ballot papers arrive, you should complete and return them immediately to ensure that your vote counts! Why should I vote? Because your vote matters. This could be the most historic general election in our times - the future of the UK, your future, the future of your children, your grandchildren and future generations will be decided by the outcome of this election. How do I choose who to vote for? Your vote is your business, but we recommend that you choose the candidate who can best protect your rights as a UK citizen in Spain, irrespective of their political party. Tactical voting might be necessary in order to secure your future, so you might find yourself voting against your traditional party affiliation.

DON’T DELAY – GET YOUR VOTE TODAY! For more information, see http://www.bremaininspain.com/ general-election-8-june/

WEEKLY EURO UPDATE The reaction of investors when Emmanuel Macron, their favoured candidate, won the French presidential election looked odd but was not entirely illogical: the euro went down. Following the first round vote investors had spent a fortnight buying the euro in anticipation of his victory. When he did indeed win they hurried to take profit on their speculative purchases. The net result for the euro was a loss of one US cent and it went down by a cent against the pound. For most of the week sterling was up there with the leaders. It felt the benefit of the imminent election and an improved appetite for risk among investors. On Thursday it came to grief, first with unexpected falls in UK manufacturing and industrial production, second with the Bank of

England's interest rate decision. As expected Bank Rate remained at 0.25% but there was disappointment that only one Monetary Policy Committee member voted for an increase. Investors were not immediately enthusiastic about Friday's US employment report. The 211k monthly increase in the number of people on nonfarm payrolls was bigger than expected but there was disappointment that the annual pace of pay increases had slowed to 2.5%. As in Britain and elsewhere, inflation in the States is hard on the heels of wages, eroding consumers' spending power. Nevertheless, speeches by several Federal Reserve bosses kept alive the expectation that interest rates will go up next month and, possibly, once more before Christmas.

How to save for your age: When taking a spin on the markets, young and old must think differently to fly high.

M

any of us will have been told at some point: ‘Act your age.’ But ‘invest your age’ is a less common command. Yet your age is one of the most important factors to consider when choosing where to save – whether in Spanish tax compliant bonds or pension. How many years you have left to invest will help determine where best to put your money. The younger you are the more investment risk you can afford to take. So wherever you are on life’s great carousel, speak to our qualified advisers to help determine which investments are right for you. 20s and 30s After experiencing the security of keeping cash in the bank, first‐time investors might be reluctant to take risks with their savings. But this is the ideal age to ramp up the risk. Racier investment funds have the potential to supercharge your savings. The trick is to pick funds that are well‐managed and have already proven they can deliver, even if they do back riskier options. 40s and 50s As you draw closer to retirement age or a time you wish to access your savings, it is wise to start being a bit more careful with your cash. By this point, hopefully, you should have saved a decent pot of money, so even if it grows at a slower rate the gains can still rack up. 60s and over Historically, many people stopped saving when they hit their 60s. But with interest rates so low many of this age group keep a hand in the stock market. They continue to work – often part‐time – rather than living off savings and investments. Once you reach your 60s, your savings focus is likely to be on funds that can pay you an income while steadily growing the money you have left so it lasts for longer. Butterfly gardening has increased in popularity in the last few years. Butterflies are pretty, fun to watch, and fun to photograph. And they are easy to attract if you are willing to allow their caterpillars to munch on a few plants. Here are some tips to make your garden especially butterfly-friendly. Plant your butterfly garden in a sunny location, but sheltered from the winds. Butterflies use sunlight to regulate their body temperature. They need sunlight to keep themselves warm, but they won't want to feed in an area where they are constantly fighting the wind to stay on the plants. The outside temperature can also become too hot for them. A good butterfly garden should provide both sunny places and shady places where butterflies can cool off. Butterflies also need water just like we do. “Puddles are very easy to make by placing some containers filled with gravel or sand, and then pouring in liquids such as stale beer, sweet drinks or water. Over-ripe fruit, allowed to sit for a few days, is a very attractive substance to them as well. For a butterfly garden to be successful, you have to control caterpillar predators and refrain from using pesticides, even organic ones, since many of them kill the caterpillars. Fire ants are a big problem for caterpillars, and are one exception to the no pesticide rule. Spread bait around per the label instructions to kill the ants without harming the caterpillars.

If predators such as birds are a major hazard, caterpillars can be kept in cages or screened off areas. They must be provided with fresh leaves of the plant they prefer. When the cocoon is formed, it should be watched carefully. When it turns clear, the butterfly is getting ready to emerge. Do not help it, as the struggle to emerge gets the fluids pumping and makes it possible for the butterfly to live. As soon as the

butterfly is out, you should release it in the wild. Butterfly attracting plants Create a paradise for butterflies and you will benefit from colour twice over. A garden full of eye and butterfly catching, fragrant flowers from spring to autumn can be achieved by selecting some of the following easyto-grow plants:

Lily of the valley (Convallaria) Rock Cress (Arabis) Lantana Zinnias Sweet Violets (Viola odorata) Shasta daisy and Coreopsis Buddleia, the butterfly bush, in white, pink or lilac or even Lilac itself Butterfly Weed (Asclepias tuberosa) or other milkweeds Dahlia, Cosmos and Marigold Petunia, Verbena and fibrous Begonia Purple coneflower (Ehinacea) Delphinium, Aster and Day Lily Hebe Sunflower Hibiscus Herbs like lavender, sage and rosemary, dill and fennel. Enjoy! Fair owners protest at lack of investment The owners of the fair attractions based in Torrevieja’s port are unhappy at the lack of

Valencian regional government for the use of the port. This amounts to €56,000 a year. Now, the fair owners demand that either they pay less or they receive more for the money that they pay. There are 70 different

investment they believe there has been on their behalf. Those who have stalls, rides and other attractions in the zone pay taxes to use the facilities. An amount that they calculate equates to two million euros over the past ten years, for which they claim to have seen very little in return. In 2016 alone, the trades people contributed €220,000 to the town council. They are also required to pay money to the

attractions that are located in this part of the town and it is a particularly attractive feature for families during the summer season. However, not everyone believes that the fair is an asset and there have been moves to change its location on a few occasions. It’s not only the fair owners who contribute to the regional government. The Generalitat also take money from the three sporting marinas, the dique de

la sal, the fish market and the parking lot. In spite of these contributions many feel that insufficient maintenance is provided in the area. The complaints have come as the area has been inspected prior to the start of the summer season. Checks of certificates, fire-fighting procedures and electrical equipment have meant that some urgent repairs have needed to be made in order to make sure that the public can use the attractions. These repairs have been conducted by the fair owners themselves who perhaps feel aggrieved that they don’t see more for the payment of their taxes.

WELCOME TO SKOPJE with Vivalia Travel Skopje is the capital of the Republic of Macedonia; it is in the Povardarie region, and is the largest and most diverse city in the country

SKOPJE is the capital of the Republic of Macedonia; it is in the Povardarie region, and is the largest and most diverse city in the country. Skopje has been occupied by many different peoples since its foundation. This is evidenced by the several Byzantine churches and monasteries around the city, also by a few Roman sites, such as Scupi and Skopje's Aqueduct. However, the group that left the greatest mark on Skopje were the Ottomans. The Ottomans ruled Macedonia for hundreds of years and built a large number of mosques and other buildings. Today, Skopje is becoming a modern city. Home to about quarter of the entire population of the country, it is also home to many different types of people. Besides the majority Macedonians, many Albanians, Turks, Roma, Serbs, Bosniaks and others call Skopje home. Skopje is the financial and political center of Macedonia and by far its biggest city. The city population is between 500,000660,000. THINGS TO SEE AND DO Alexander the GREAT. Perhaps the main symbol of Skopje is the Warrior on a Horse statue and fountain in the centre of Macedonia Square. It is typically thought to depict Alexander the Great, though it is not officially named for him. The monument was built in Florence and was officially completed on September 8, 2011 to commemorate 20 years of the independence of the Republic of Macedonia. Kale Fortress. The Kale Fortress stands on the highest hill in the Skopje valley and offers great views over the city. The oldest section of the fortress is within the present day fortifications. It is 121m long and is built in opus qvadrum style (huge stone blocks on the outside and small stones inside) by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian who was born in the village of Taorion near Skopje.

Stone Bridge. The Stone Bridge was built in the 6th century by the Byzantine emperor Justinian. Since then it has been the symbol of the city and every ruler tried to leave a mark on it, even Skopje's last major who has been restoring it for 10 years now. Macedonia Square. Even though most of the interesting sights are on the other side of the Stone Bridge, there are couple of interesting sights around Macedonia Square. The square has changed a lot after the earthquake, most of the neoclassical buildings are gone except for a small section of houses in the center. On the other hand, you can do several interesting things in Skopje. Explore Matka Canyon, Features a lake and a hydrodam. Locals go there in the summer to swim in the river and picnic. Starting from the hydrodam, there is a 6km long walking trail along the canyon that leads you to another dam. Another important event is Skopje Summer Festival. The epithets such as the most abundant, the most various, the longest and, according to many authorized marks, one of the most qualitative cultural manifestation of international character which is held in Macedonia, characterize Skopje Summer. EAT AND DRINK Macedonia’s capital offers something to satisfy all modern tastes and appetites. Make sure to try the famous Macedonian foods such as burek, Shopska Salata, and others. Skopje’s eateries are plentiful and offer a diverse range of local and international flavours. International cuisine is well represented in Skopje with Chinese, Italian, Indian, Greek, Mexican, Middle Eastern and French restaurants all found within the city centre. In addition, pizza and fast food places abound, as do small bakery cafes selling pastries such as the ubiquitous burek (a flaky filo pie stuffed with meat, cheese or spinach).

Eleven blue flags for Orihuela Costa The Councillor for Beaches for Orihuela, Luisa Boné, held a press conference recently to announce that the International Blue Flag Jury for 2017 has awarded 11 Blue Flags to Orihuela Costa, nine for the beaches and two for the marina ports. The Councillor for the Municipal Group Ciudadanos said that “Orihuela can rejoice for several reasons, but mainly because we are the city that has received the most awards in the province and we have now received another blue flag this year, so the number has increased from eight to nine.” These awards are international quality labels that recognise the high water quality of beaches and the

excellent services available to visitors, such as beach bars, rescue services, foot showers, accessibility etc. Following the criteria, the jury has awarded Orihuela blue flags for the beaches of: Punta Prima, Cala Mosca, Cala Estaca, Cala Bosque, Cala Capitán, La Caleta, Cala de Aguamarina, La Glea and Barranco Rubio. In addition, the marinas at Cabo Roig and Dehesa de Campoamor have also received these awards. Is there any hope?

She stole my baby name

Having worked very closely with a guy at work, we have got to know each other very well over the years, and I think I am in love with him. I measure every man against him, and can find no one better. But there is a problem. He is married with children. I date other men, and have done for years but cannot get him out of my mind. He knows how it is - we had a moment once, and I think he also has feelings, but he is the decent sort who would not risk his marriage, and he has said so. What can I do?

My cousin and I grew up together. She has always copied me. We both got pregnant at the same time, and I told her my choice of name (Sasha) for either a girl or a boy. She has now given birth, and I have discovered on Facebook that she has copied my choice of name! I am furious with her. I haven’t yet seen or spoken to her. My baby is due in the next few days.

It seems this man has made his feelings clear to you. Even if there is a spark between you, he is doing the decent thing and not taking your relationship any further. And you need to do the same, as I don’t see any future in this for you. Consider changing jobs if you can, otherwise you may never be able to move on.

You could stick to your guns and still call your child what you had planned. No one would blame you for it if you explained the circumstances. Then you might force your cousin to choose a different name. Or, you could take the bigger stance and choose an alternative name for your child. It would be awkward for the children to grow up with the same name. If I were you though, I would tell your cousin that you are upset that she deliberately took your choice of name. Maybe then, and for the sake of your relationship, it will give her the opportunity to decide against it.

FIVE STEPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL SALE Rebecca Serwotka Your favourite local property expert, of Inmobiliaria Real Estate Agents in Ciudad Quesada & published author of “Moving Forward – 25 Essential Rules For Buying & Selling Real Estate Without Going Crazy.” Request your FREE copy today!

“How can I possibly sell my home, when I don’t live here?” “It is such a stressful time, trying to organize everything when I live so far away,” Don’t fret! The process is much easier than you think. Here are 5 steps for a successful sale: 1. Have your documents at the ready! You’ll need: • The Escritura (Title Deeds) And don’t panic if you can’t find the original. You can always go back to the Notary where you signed, and request a duplicate. On some occasions, you can sell with just a Land Registry Search. • N.I.E. Certificates. If you can’t find them and have been registered with the Spanish Inland Revenue, you don’t need to apply for a duplicate, you just need to request your Tax Labels “Etiquetas.” • Habitation Certificate. This is obtained from the Town Hall, through a local Architect. • Energy Efficiency Certificate. This too is obtained from an Architect. • All utility receipts; Water, Electric, Gas. • Latest Suma receipt. This is the equivalent of the Council Tax. Remember, this bill is yours for the whole

year as a homeowner, even if you’re completing your sale in January. • For the day of completion, you will need your original Passport, as proof of identity. 2. If you’re intentions are to transfer your funds back to the U.K., after you’ve completed your sale, speak to a currency company like MoneyCorp, as far in advance as possible, as you will need to set up an account with them. They will be able to offer you a much better deal than the local banks, to move your money back. The local banks charge extortionate fees for depositing bankers drafts, so make sure you either negotiate, negotiate, negotiate… (did I say negotiate?) I mean NEGOTIATE with them, or use a highly reputable currency company. You’ll be glad you did! 3. Organize the removal of your furnishings and/or personal effects. If you need boxes, go to the local supermarkets. They usually leave their unwanted boxes outside. 4. Once you have a completion date, go to your local bank to stop all direct debits. You’ll want to do this, just a couple of days in advance of the big day. 5. If you can’t be in Spain for completion, leave Power Of Attorney to sell, with your trusted Lawyer. Bear in mind, charges do vary from Lawyer to Lawyer, so just for guidance, the fees should be around €500 per couple. This includes Notary Fees. So there you have it…. Simple really! But most importantly is not to stress out, about your impending move. Try to enjoy the journey, and go with the flow! Think property? Think us, because life’s complicated enough! Great TBH charity night success

Velvetones Charity Donations

The fabulous free Fashion show from "Reach Out" takes place on Friday 19th May at 2pm at the Marina bar, Calle de Las Rosas, Torrevieja. As usual there will be a raffle, tombola, name the gorilla, stalls, and of course the chance to buy clothes, bags, shoes and jewellery at very cheap prices. Organiser David & Lorraine Whitney are hoping for the same support as previous years so make a diary note and come along, grab a bargain and support this worthwhile charity that helps the poor and homeless in the area. Rita and Dave Monaghan of the Marina Bar, and their dedicated staff will of course be on hand to cater for your refreshment needs. It is sure to be a fun afternoon as usual, and for a very good cause.

The Torrevieja Barbershop Harmonisers hosted an informal charity night at Catorce restaurant in Benijófar on 28th April 2017 raising more than 230 euros for charity. More than 65 people, guests and choir members of both TBH and Velvetones were entertained by members of the Barbershop chorus, Hulabaloo Quartet & Qmix choir and a very good evening was had by all. The Torrevieja Barbershop Harmonisers have been established in Torrevieja for over 26years. They rehearse every Friday morning at Sacko’s Bar in El Limonar at 10.30am and are always on the lookout for

Following a very successful evening with music from the Reef Band which made over 400 euros and a St George's quiz at the Bridge Bar in Rojales where the regulars dug deep yet again to raise over 90 euros for our charities, the Velvetones presented cheques for 250 euros each to A.E.C.C. and ALPE at their Wednesday rehearsal. If you would like us to sing for you we are available free for registered charities or for a small fee to other organisations and all proceeds go to charity. We rehearse every Wednesday from 10.0012.30 at El Paraiso Restaurant, Torrevieja so why not come along and join us. For further details visit us on Facebook or on our website. www.velvetonesharmonytorrevieja.com.

MOVIE picks The Heat - Channel 4 - 10.00pm

Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy star as mismatched cops in another broad-humoured, rumbustious comedy from Bridesmaids director Paul Feig. Sarah Ashburn is an arrogant, workaholic New York FBI special agent who has no time for relationships, sexual or otherwise. But her lack of engagement with people is undermining her goal of promotion, so her boss sends her to help the Boston PD arrest a drug lord, and at the same time prove she can work with other detectives. In Boston, she's partnered with the fearsome, foul-mouthed detective Shannon Mullins, who's as impetuously independent as Ashburn is rule-abiding. The two fail to hit it off, spectacularly. But to catch their villain, the ultracompetitive duo will not only have to overcome their constant bickering, but also seek help from Mullins' family, who disowned her after she jailed her own brother.

There can’t be many things more exciting than cruising on the Adriatic. Visiting Ports that are both historical and scenic, there is nothing better than waking up in a different port every day. And each of these ports are more exciting than the last. With coach travel to Madrid Airport, you fly to Bari (Italy) to meet your Costa Crucero representative who will transport you to your Ship the Deliziosa. On board we receive the “royal treatment” at dinner. From smiling waist coated waiters. Relaxing meals, a bit of musical entertainment in the bar, a show in the theatre, a throw of the dice in the casino, and a good nights sleep, how wonderful to wake in a different port every day. As the 2nd largest town in Southern Italy, Bari contains the bones of St Nicholas (aka Santa Claus) in its Basilica, one of the 1st Norman churches to be built in this area and its 11th century Romanesque

Cathedral is Bari's most important church. A gentle stop to get you in the mood for the next few days. Next day the famous Greek island of Corfu. A history of constant wars and battles has left a heritage of many castles. A popular spot with the Royals of Europe, but really didn’t join the tourist route until the 20thCentury. Next day the cliffs of Santorini tower over the ship. Transfers from the ship to the mainland using small local boats give us no clue of what is to come. There are 3 ways to go up to the town. You can walk – not really an option on the almost vertical road. You can use the cable car, Ok if you are not worried by heights. Or you can take the notorious Santorini Donkey ride, what great fun. Perhaps Donkeys up, cable car down might be about the right option. Whichever way you choose you will be enthralled by this delightful, sparkling whitewashed town, which seems to have come straight out of the film

Cat café opens in Valencia Valencia’s first-ever ‘cat café’ has just opened on Calle Túria with a huge collection of rescued moggies seeking homes. 'El Passatge dels Gats' is home to felines rescued from the street by the Valencia-based shelter Asociación Adaana, and have all been spayed or neutered, wormed, de-flead, vaccinated and given a thorough veterinary check – as is standard with most shelters whenever they welcome a new arrival. However, in order to get a second chance at life and enjoy being spoilt rotten in a loving home, the cats need to be ‘humanised’ – as non-domestic cats tend to be very scared and shy at first, but quickly adapt and make friends with their fellow

species if they are given lots of attention. A few ‘stroking sessions’ is normally enough to break the ice, then the cats realise they cannot get enough of the comfort supplied by humans and swiftly become affectionate. For customers, they can enjoy the added bonus of being able to relax in feline company whilst they wind down with a drink – after all, numerous studies have proven that stroking a cat relieves tension, increases dopamine and oxytocin levels and lowers blood pressure. Given that the café is full of animals, customers cannot just walk in off the street as the cats may escape, undoing all the hard work of Adaana and El Passatge

dels Gats and their clients. Therefore, booking is required, by telephone or via the website elpassatgedelsgats.com. A ‘bronze’ booking gives customers half an hour with the cats, whilst a ‘silver’ reservation gives them a full hour with a drink included and ‘gold’ is the same as silver but with a free snack as well. Finally, a ‘platinum’ booking means an hour’s worth of cat-stroking, a drink, and more exquisite, high-class snack. All animals at the café are available for adoption – in fact, customers are actively encouraged to take them home and have the added advantage of all the most expensive initial vet bills having already been paid.

Big cash sales to be reported Spanish stores are to flag up foreigners spending more than 10,000 euros in cash. The Spanish government has announced further plans to crack down on money laundering through a series of measures that include tougher sanctions against wrongdoers, guaranteed anonymity for whistleblowers, and requiring stores to flag up purchases of more than €10,000. The proposals are outlined in an Economy Ministry document that is up

for public consultation until 10th June and which aims to bring Spanish law into line with an European Union (EU) directive from May 2015. Spanish law already includes most of the measures outlined in the EU directive, but some articles require adapting, particularly in relation to legal authority to impose sanctions. The government wants to bring sanctions up to date, “making them compatible with the maximum limits

outlined in the European directive,” which means improving detection and making it easier for people to report money laundering by offering greater confidentiality. The idea is not to make any “fundamental modification” to the law on money laundering and financing terrorism, but to toughen penalties. Regarding payments in cash, the limit for non-residents in Spain will remain at €15,000, but retailers will have to

introduce anti-money laundering measures on purchases of more than €10,000. For residents, the limit is €2,500. Aside from toughening the sanctions, the Economy Ministry’s document looks at changing the structure of business groups to bring them in line with Europe, and creating a registry of professional service providers to companies and organizations without legal personality

DJ Robert Miles dies in his Ibiza home DJ Robert Miles, known worldwide for his million-selling dream-house track ‘Children’, has died aged just 47 after a months-long battle with cancer, the online radio he founded has announced. “Robert passed away peacefully last night after a courageous battle with stage 4 metastatic cancer over the last 9 months,” OpenLab, which also broadcasts on traditional airwaves in the Balearic Islands of Ibiza and Formentera, said on its Facebook page. “Throughout it he was strong, determined, incredibly brave and did everything he could to fight this horrendous disease,” it said. “Robert was more than just an artist, he was a pioneer, a creator, an inspiration, a son, a father, our friend.” Spanish media reported he had died in Ibiza where he lived. The Italian producer and composer, whose real name was Roberto Concina, began his career DJ-ing in clubs and on the radio in northern Italy before being catapulted to worldwide fame in the 1990s with ‘Children’ for which he won a Brit award for Best International Male Newcomer in 1997. He later collaborated with other famous artists such as Nitin Sawhney, and worked on projects including the music of the film “The Bourne Identity” starring Matt Damon. He also founded OpenLab, an online radio station that broadcasts alternative, electronic and experimental music, and that has morphed into an online community that also showcases cuttingedge visuals.

Parliament calls for Franco's remains to be moved Spanish lawmakers have approved a motion calling for the remains of General Francisco Franco to be removed from a controversial mausoleum near Madrid that was built by prisoners during his dictatorship. Approval of the motion is symbolic since it does not place any obligation on the government to act, but it has reopened debate over the massive Valley of the Fallen mausoleum some 50 kilometres northwest of the Spanish capital. The motion put forward by the main opposition Socialists was passed with 198 votes in favour and one against. The ruling conservative Popular Party (PP), which was founded by former members of the Franco regime and which lacks a majority in the 350-seat assembly, abstained.

Franco governed Spain with an iron fist from the end of Spain's 1936-39 civil war and his death in 1975, when he was buried inside a basilica drilled into the side of a mountain at the Valley of the Fallen. Built by Franco's regime between 1940 and 1958 in the granite mountains of the Sierra de Guadarrama, the monument holds the remains of over 30,000 dead from both sides in the civil war. The dictator, whose Nationalist forces defeated the Republicans in the civil war, dedicated the site to “all the fallen” of the conflict in an attempt at reconciliation, but the monument was built in part by the forced labour of political prisoners, many of whom died whilst completing the works. The mausoleum features a

giant stone cross and other symbols of Franco's NationalCatholic ideology, and is seen by many as a relic of the dictatorship. Families of those killed in the civil war complain that the man who ruled as a fascist dictator for nearly four decades should not lie in a monument to victims of the conflict that brought him to power. The motion approved by parliament calls for the mausoleum to be “given a new meaning” so it is no longer “a place of Francoist memory” and instead favours reconciliation. The text also called for the remains of Jose Antonio Primo de Rivera, founder of Spain's fascist Falange party who died during the civil war, to be moved from the basilica in the Valley of the Fallen to a less prominent spot at the site.

Blogger arrested for playing Protecting Pokemon Go in a church children online A Russian blogger has been given a threeand-a-half year suspended sentence after he posted a video of himself playing Pokemon Go in a church The court in the city of Yekaterinburg found Ruslan Sokolovsky guilty of insulting religious believers and inciting hatred. During the trial, Sokolovsky, now aged

22, had pleaded not guilty. He filmed himself playing the popular game in the local Orthodox church in August 2016. He was arrested shortly afterwards. On Thursday, Sokolovsky was also found guilty of "illegal trafficking of special technical equipment" after a pen with a built-in video camera had been

discovered during the search of his home. During the trial, the prosecution had asked for Sokolovsky to be jailed for three-and-a-half years. After the verdict was announced, the blogger said he was relieved. He said he had already apologised to religious believers, adding that the way he delivered his video was "too cynical for Russian society". Sokolovsky also said he would consult his lawyers about whether he should appeal against the verdict. The video from the church built in remembrance of Tsar Nicholas II and his family was posted by Sokolovsky in August 2016, quickly attracting many viewers. It was published apparently in response to warnings that playing such games in church might have legal consequences. In the video, Sokolovsky - just before going inside the church - is seen saying that the risk of being arrested is "complete nonsense". "Who could get offended if you're just walking around with your smartphone in a church?"

Beth from Murcia asks: Hello Aunty. When I go onto some of my favourite websites or email page, loads of adverts keep popping up. When this happens it can stop me from typing and even freeze my laptop. Is there any way that I can stop these ads appearing as they are so annoying? I am using Windows 8 and Google Chrome. Aunty Says: Hello Beth. I’m still a huge fan of Adblock which you can get from www.adblockplus.org It is “pay what you like” which is basically free if you don’t feel like paying for it. You should also definitely give your machine a full scan with Malwarebytes and your favourite antivirus program. Brian via email asks: Hi Aunty. I have a question that’s not technically computer related but I hope you can still help. I have a Samsung Galaxy phone which has become very slow and is now all but unusable because (I am told by my niece) due to all of the apps I have installed. I use Skype and Facebook and a few games. She advised me to install an “SD card” and then transfer some of my stuff from the phone’s internal memory onto the new SD card, which will apparently

Concerns about the impact that social media can have on children and young people are growing in Spain. In response, the provincial councillor for welfare, Fabiana Ibarra, has organised awareness raising sessions for parents around the province. The awareness days recognise the value and benefits there are of using the internet but how it can also be used to harm. More than 90% of young people between the ages of 10 and 15 are habitual users of the internet according to the Instituto Nacional de Estadística and other reports by the European Union. Many of them are at risk of becoming addicted to new technology and victims of online abuse. Young people are at risk from over use of social media, internet, mobiles and video games. Online bullying is now a particular concern in Spain and that this can lead to children and young people becoming so distressed that they take their own lives. Social media allows the spread of opinions over a wide area with very little control. Users can feel able to be openly offensive in a way that they would not be face-to-face. The University of Alicante is organising the days as a matter of priority. It’s considered important that mothers, fathers, teachers and other adults know how to apply strategies to prevent indiscriminate use. The courses

free up some valuable space. I have no idea how to do this and before I take it into my local shop I would like some advice so I know what I am paying for, or even have a go myself if it isn’t too technical. I do hope you can help. Aunty Says: Hello Brian. It’s not too difficult so have a go yourself, what’s the worst that could happen!? What you will need to do first is purchase a Micro SD card, which you can pick up from Media Mark or Carrefour for under €15 for a 32GB one. Switch off your phone/tablet and locate the slot where the card will go, you will either have a slot on the side somewhere or you will need to gently prise the back cover off but if you’re not sure then I would suggest Googling this with the model of your phone. Once your new SD card is installed you can switch your device back on and go to “settings” “apps manager” and you will see a list of all kind of apps that are on your phone, some you will recognize but most will be system/android apps. Locate Skype in the list and it will give you the option “Move to SD card”. Do this for any apps you recognize but don’t worry because if an app can’t be moved it will have the “Move to SD card” option greyed out. You can do the same for photos but try this first and let me know

include information about how to supervise the use of the internet and how children and young people can use it without putting themselves at risk. There will also be information about the tools that different social media sites have themselves to limit abuse. Entry to the events is free and you can register on http://torreviejaua.eventbrite.es/ . In Torrevieja the awareness days will be on Wednesday 17th May in the Virgen del Carmen Cultural Centre from 4pm until 8pm and Tuesday 23rd May from 4pm to 8pm in the CIAJ building on the front by Burger King. The sessions, which will be conducted in Spanish, include: Wednesday 17th May 4pm – 4.45pm – problems with technology for adolescents 4.45pm – 5.30pm- use of technology and the prevention of bullying and suicide amongst young people Tuesday 23rd May 4.00pm to 8.00pm: How to supervise internet use Suzanne O’Connell

how you get on. Mark via email asks: Hi Aunty, I use Google Chrome for surfing the Internet and for accessing my Gmail. After some kind of update or scan last week it now comes up in Spanish, and although I can get by it’s the spell checker that is annoying me as it is constantly showing errors and it tries to change English words to Spanish words. Can you please tell me if I can force it back to English? Aunty Says: Hi Mark. Probably the easiest way is to use www.google.co.uk (rather than .com or .es) as this will force the English version, and Gmail and most search results will then be the UK ones. Windows and Chrome both check your location and choose what language accordingly and as .com sites are global this will cause this kind of problem. Any questions you can email me at auntyvirus@costablancapeople.com and I’ll see you all next week

That’ll do for this week. Email me your problems to auntyvirus@costablancapeople.com

and I will see what I can do.

Extra Measures to Crack Down Portable Breathalyser Scam Warning on Habitual Offenders The Director General of the DGT, Gregorio Serrano, has announced an urgent review to further increase measure made available to clamp down on habitual drink and drug drivers. The announcement came just before a third cyclist died in hospital from injuries sustained when a drunk and drugged driver ploughed into a group of cyclists at

the weekend, killing two at the scene, and rendering three more hospitalised with serious injuries,a third died in hospital days later The driver had her licence withdrawn four years ago after testing positive for blood alcohol and failed to take the mandatory course required to revalidate the licence. Immediately prior to this incident, the driver managed to avoid three alcohol checkpoints, highlighting the importance of not sharing such information through social media, as any one of those patrols would have prevented the tragedy had they been able to stop her. Serrano has called for an “urgent” meeting on Tuesday 16 May with the Road Safety Committee (Comité de Seguridad Vial) which will address “the growing problem of fatal accidents of the cyclist” and will detail the measures the DGT would like to implement. Serrano has said that reforming the Penal Code is not within the competence

of the DGT, but they can insure that the tools to act against offenders are made available. “We are seeing that the number of cyclists that die every weekend on our roads is unbearable, and we are not prepared for anyone to be in fear of not returning home alive”, Serrano said, explaining how the Strategic Plan for Bicycles has already begun to be drawn up and that the working group has been convened to prepare it. Investment in cycle routes and their expansion must continue, he said, and constant maintenance and repair is crucial. That said, the individual responsibility of all road users must be accepted, including cyclists, who must not only play their part by ensuring compliance with the rules and laws of the roads, but also in maintaining visibility and offering mutual respect that they demand from other road users. Mark Nolan – N332

At N332, we were recently inundated with questions regarding new laws set to come into force in Spain which demand all private cars carry portable breathalysers. Failing to do so would result in fines being issued by the police. We were able to answer the question immediately, and reassure those who were worried, that the article was, in fact, fake, and that it is not a requirement to carry a breathalyser. You do not have to carry any kind of alcohol detection equipment in your vehicle, and, therefore, you will not be fined if you don´t. There are also currently no plans for this rule to be implemented in Spain. There has recently been a reoccurrence of the same question, brought about by an advertising campaign on social network sites which make the false claim once again, and provide a useful link to a website where you can purchase the

breathalyser. Again, this is totally fake. The websites are misleading and fraudulently claiming that the law has changed. Whereas the websites are allowed to sell the products, in the same way you are welcome to purchase a breathalyser for your own use, it is not mandatory, nor can it be used as evidence in the event of an incident, and so is in fact useless. The websites and their creators are under investigation, although this is no easy task as they are hiding behind a network of scam sites, it is only a matter of time before the cybercrime investigators do catch up with them. Finally, it is worth pointing out and reminding you that the maximum permitted amount of alcohol in Spain is far lower than other countries, including the UK, and so the best limit to set is that of zero consumption if you are going to drive. Mark Nolan – N332

FRANTIC PENULTIMATE SESSION LEAVES LEAGUE UNDECIDED With all the important games played simultaneously, interest was of course focused on the two top teams, neck-andneck but Real Madrid with a game in hand. Cristiano Ronaldo scored two as the Madrid side won 4-1 in the season’s last match, against Sevilla, at the Bernabeu, and Neymar went one better as Barcelona won by the same score away at Las Palmas. The other games of note were at the bottom of the table, where Sporting managed an unlikely win away at Eibar to give them a glimmer of hope. Deportivo and Leganés both fought out surprising draws, at Villareal and Bilbao respectively, giving Leganés a passport to safety, whilst Depor will need a point if Sporting win next week. The second division leadership is no longer in dispute, with Levante, runaway leaders, already promoted, and Girona looking set to follow them up, despite losing 2-1 to Levante in the battle of the two top sides. The play-offs are still far from decided, but Getafe, Tenerife, and Cádiz are all looking likely to be involved. Down at the bottom, miserable recent form has seen Elche slip into a relegation place, and losing at home to a last-ditch goal from bottom club Mirandés didn’t help at all. In England, Antonio Conté’s Chelsea (RIGHT) provided the big news, taking the Premier title with still two matches to go, when they won away at West Brom. Manchester City contrived to fashion a draw with Leicester, after scoring an

offside ‘goal’ whilst their opponents’ penalty-taker, Mahrez, somehow managed to take a ‘double tap’ at the ball and got the kick disallowed. Down at the bottom Hull are to join Middlesbrough and Sunderland in the lower level, after losing 4-0 to Crystal Palace. Coutinho again starred for Liverpool as they, too, scored four against West Ham. Way down, the Football League welcomes a brandnew member as Forest Green Rovers beat Tranmere (also Rovers!) 3-1 in the National League play-off final, and will join Lincoln City. In tennis, Andy Murray’s poor form continues – he won’t retain his number one spot much longer like this – as he lost to a little-known Croatian in Madrid, whilst Rafa Nadal is well on the road back, beating Djokovic in straight sets in a fine semi-final performance. Rafa went on to take the final against the lively young Austrian, Dominic Thiem. Malcolm Palmer

Tales from the Top Flight ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Michy Batshuyai

All rise for Michy Batshuyai! Being a good striker is all about timing and, having done nothing other than run an interesting Instagram account all season, the Belgian front man came off the bench to score the goal that sealed the title for the Blues. You can guarantee the picture of him on his knees celebrating made it on to social media. Weirdly, Chelsea closed this out in the exact same manner as Leicester last season with no frills, no real drama or upset and thoroughly professionally. Yet, with Chelsea you just knew this was in the bag long ago. Mainly because it was Spurs chasing them. Once more a Chelsea manager rocks up and wins the league. Easy when you know how, hey Arsene? Conte will be rewarded by an offer that would make him one of the best paid managers outside of China.

Said offer might be coming from Inter though.

he practically punched home Stoke’s consolation.

Speaking of Spurs, apparently they are leaving White Hart Lane? I wasn’t aware of this fact. I mean, when clubs leave their historic stadiums aren’t we supposed to have months of build up, controversy, countdowns, brand new stadiums paid for by the taxpayer all ready to move into? No? Just West Ham then. Spurs welcomed Manchester United to White Lart Lane for “the Finale” which I presume was named such so that Tottenham felt as if they had reached a final this season. Either way, they went out in style banishing memories of most of the United victories at the Lane over the years. Fair play Tottenham, this season you managed to come second in a onehorse race.

If a gauntlet was thrown down to Liverpool by Arsenal, Liverpool who struggle against mid-to-lower-table teams, they certainly accepted it. Of course, it helps to be playing West Ham when you need reply to a statement. Four goals later, the reply was very much written in stone. With one game left, Liverpool would consider themselves very unfortunate to end up outside the top four. Manchester City would probably feel the same, especially with their two games remaining. Their win over Leicester saw them end the weekend in 4th. You need a bit of luck at times, and City certainly had that. Sterling was offside, though when Raheem is in the six yard box you can never quite be sure that he is interfering with play. Mind you if he is in the six yard box it’s not always a goal-scoring opportunity either! Riyad Mahrez summed up his season in one run up. Slipping and taking the penalty with both feet and seeing it disallowed is how far he has dropped this time round. Don’t forget though, Leicester could finish 8th which would not be a bad campaign at all. Just imagine if they’d got rid of that guy sooner.

Just look at Arsenal go! Like the experienced middle distance runner, the Gunners are just picking up pace on the final lap and are ready to overtake those that went too early. They are not, as we know, bothered about gold medals, just about qualifying for the next stage. Stoke were all too willing to step aside, and even Mike Dean couldn’t stop Arsene’s men. Sanchez showed Ozil what an assist really looks like and Giroud scored some more. I still don’t understand why Giroud gets almost as much stick as the manager. He plays, he scores. Simple. It’s not his fault what happens at the other end. Oh, and nice one Crouchy. His tweet after the game said something like “slightly dubious” as

Sunderland followed up their unexpected win at Hull last weekend with a tricky trip to the Stadium of Light, which it could be said is Sunderland’s bogey ground. Those fans that were still there at the end of the match will have been delighted to see Moyes just shoot

A bit of a breezy day

After three cold days of high winds, cloud and rain the weather forecast for Sunday April 30th looked good, other than the wind strength increasing to 19 knots by about 3pm, so the second race day of the SAMM Spring Series was on.

12 competitors in eight boats arrived at the beachfront of CTD Los Narejos at 10am to glorious sunshine and a nice 4-5 knot breeze but at 11.30am the wind suddenly increased to 15 knots which is the maximum it is

considered comfortable to sail in for what is supposed to be fun club racing. As the start time approached it had increased to 17 knots and Don Clarke, single handed in his two person Hartley 12.2, decided not to compete. All other seven boats got away safely for the scheduled 4 lap race although there was some confusion over the start time and two boats went early. By the end of lap 2 the wind was gusting at about 20 knots so the race officer had to decide whether to abandon the race on safety grounds or continue. He decided that, as all boats had been trying so hard in the conditions, he would shorten the race to 3 laps. Two boats retired, one because they got lost and the other because they missed a mark, but the other six all finished safely and there were no capsizes, a tribute to the skill of all the competitors. When the results were calculated on handicap it was found that between 21 and 42 seconds separated each place, a superb achievement in the conditions. The winners were Tug Wilson and Vernon O’Byrne in their Laser 2000. Many thanks went to the crew of the support boat who, despite getting very wet, did a sterling job monitoring the competitors to ensure every ones safety. With no lessening of the wind strength it was agreed by all to abandon further racing for the day.

straight down the tunnel. Mind you, it was the best shooting by anyone associated with the Black Cats this campaign. Swansea turned up the heat on Hull with their 2-0 win, knowing that defeat the next day for their rivals would see Paul Clement avoid the fate of being sacked twice in the Championship in a few months time. Now look, I like Marco Silva. I think that has been pretty clear in the last few weeks. But, I can’t help but feel that they really should have smashed Sunderland last week so that not everything was on the table against Big Sam’s Palace. You don’t want to play a side managed by a furiously chewing Allardyce at this stage of the season. And Hull showed that they really didn’t want to be playing Palace, capitulating to a 4-0 loss that was quite out of character in recent months. Somewhere Merson and Thompson were smiling, seeing the most British of British managers in Allardyce safe as that Johnny-comelately-foreign type was sacrificed. Of course, had they gone English it would not have guaranteed safety as Steve Agnew very much proved. Still, at least the sun had the decency to shine at the Riverside, meaning it could well and truly set on Middlesbrough’s Premier League tenure. Brad Guzan has had better weeks, hasn’t he? Having been nutmegged three times on Monday night, his desperate charge out of goal to almost kill Long and his defender was comical. Not quite as comical as Long’s penalty however.

Here’s a question. Has anyone ever run a channel as willingly as Shane Long? Patrick Bamford scored, which was great as I presumed he had either retired young or was recovering from a career threatening injury. Plucky little Bournemouth currently sit tenth. Eddie Howe, English in name but not in management style, has worked out how to get the best out of Josh King, English in name but actually Norwegian negating some recent calls for him to get an England call-up. King got the winner, and his reward might be to keep John Terry away from his wife next season. So, we have a few games during the week but they mean very little unless you consider the top-four thing of importance. The relegation battle that looked like it might go the distance is over quicker than expected, so all that catches the eye for next week’s column is whether Arsene Wenger is going to find a way to have one last laugh at our expense.

I’m always happier writing this column when I know Lewis Hamilton has a smile on his face. And today Lewis is beaming, not just because he won the Spanish Grand Prix but because he beat Vettel into second. Vettel had stolen the lead on the opening lap, but Mercedes and Hamilton managed the race perfectly to win. It’s all about tyre strategy at the very top, I am told. I know Team Sky are not exactly winning any cycling popularity contests right now, but there’s no need for a police motorbike to try and take them all out. It seems a little harsh. Geraint Thomas who had a chance of winning the Giro d’Italia, was one of the riders hit hardest in the competition sense and saw his challenge fade after the incident.

Mind you, I don’t think Verdun Hayes would stand for such excuses. He became the world’s oldest skydiver over the weekend, aged 101 years and 38 days. He was joined by three generations of his family as he made the record breaking jump. You’re probably thinking that Verdun has been doing this for at least three quarters of a century or something. Not a bit of it! His first jump was for his 100th birthday. A late Alex Goode try saw Saracens become the fourth team to successfully defend Europe’s Champions Cup in rugby union. Billy Vunipola checked with his superior and got forgiveness in advance for getting heavily drunk after the match. Worryingly, England’s ODI cricket team have been labelled “favourites” for the upcoming Champions Trophy. Nothing is more likely to lead to sporting disappointment than making an English side favourites, especially when leather and willow are involved.

ALICANTE STAR 219 ALL OUT. TORREVIEJA 121 ALL OUT Torrevieja CC with a new captain, a new sponsor and a couple of new players, hoped to kick off the new season with a win. Alicante Star CC had different ideas as they lined up for their first game in the Eastern and Central Cricket League. Winning the toss Alicante elected to bat and started off in a lively manner scoring 5 runs per over. In the 10th over young Ciaran Guichard bowled Lali Singh for a quick fire 38. This brought Nadeem to the wicket and he set about the bowling with gay abandon. It was only a brilliant diving catch by Paul Harvey that ended the onslaught. In the meantime Usman (25) and Husnain (27) moved the score along but once they had departed, Torevieja began to claw their

way back into the game. A brilliant spell of bowling from Ciaran Guichard had Alicante losing their last 5 wickets for just38 runs. Ciaran finishing with 8 overs 6 wickets for 30 runs. When Torrevieja went into bat, although they managed to keep up with the run rate required wickets fell steadily and eventually were all out for 121. Only Pawitta Singh (25) and Rahul Maini (39 no) offered any resistance. With 3 wickets for Nadeem and 2 each for Husnain, Usman, and Walid bowling honours were shared. Torrevieja's next home game is 27th May against Sporting Alfas. Spectators welcome. Further info at Torreviejacricket.com

ABBEY ANGLING This week we fished the 9th and penultimate round of the Spring Series at the Embalse de Argos on the 9th May. What a surprise to see that the water was eighteen inches higher than its normal winter level. With the warmer weather now here top weights were expected to be higher and we were not disappointed, Doug Hornblow on the first peg out of the trees took the top spot of the day with over 64kgs and nearly all the other anglers produced double figure weights. 1st Doug Hornblow with 64.700kgs fishing the pellet up in the water and the pole using paste 2nd Bill Reade with 42.660kgs fishing the pole using paste 3rd Terry Screen with 39.120kgs fishing the pole using paste There are still some vacancies available for membership at the club All details are available on our new website abbeyangling.es or from me on 965328368

RODS & REELS We also fished the Embalsa

fairways a touch dry and clumpy, and greens in the process of being spiked and slow. Two very differing results in the 2 matches played in this year’s SMGS doubles match play competition. Barry Roehrig and Kenny Reddington fairly easily saw off Ron Stenhouse and Paul Cobain 6&4, but a major battle was had by the second group of pairings. It took to the 20th hole to decide the match between Ken Flaherty and his partner Robin Eastman and the duet of Mick Roscoe and Steve Davis, the former finally winning 1up. The day’s results were the following: Bronze: 5th, Keith Stevenson (33 on CB), 4th Carmel McCann (33 on CB), 3rd Chris Hamblett (33 on CB), 2nd Marg Birtwistle (37) and 1st, with the best score of the day, Keith Wraithmell with 39 points. Silver: 5th Mike Jordan (32), 4th Richard Cleary (33 on CB), 3rd Roger Webb (33 on CB), 2nd Steve Davis (35 on CB), and 1st Ken Flaherty, also with 35. Gold: Ivan Hanak (31), 4th Ivor Turkington (34 on CB), 3rd Barry Roehrig (34 on CB), 2nd Jamie Rorison (35) and 1st Darren Hancock with 37 points. Nearest the pins (open to all) went to: Steve Davis (3), Alan MacDonald (8), Ray Smithers (12), Alan Ewing (16) and Ivor Turkington (17). The Abacus’ bottle of wine prize went to Ray Smithers. Our thanks go to the staff at Font de Llop. Next week we will be at Hacienda de Riquelme. Keep up to date with all SMGS matters by logging on to our website www.smgs.org

de Argos for the 4th round of the Spring Series on the 10th May. Again it was a lovely day, until around 2pm when the wind got up with a vengeance. Bill the master Reade reversing the role from the day before to take the top spot with over 61kgs, placing Doug Hornblow into the 2nd position, and the overall weights were on par from yesterdays match 1st Bill Reade with 61.220kgs fishing the pole using paste 2nd Doug Hornblow with 41.940kgs fishing the pole using paste 3rd Dave Hoare with 40.480kgs fishing the pellet up in the water There are still some vacancies at the Club and if anyone is interested in joining please contact Bill Reade on 966790416 We combined these two

matches into a Mini Fishing festival, as most of us stayed overnight to save travelling to Argos both days. Our thanks go to Doug Hornblow who supplied two Diawa twin hard case holdalls which each hold two assembled feeder rods as prizes for the overall top two weights from both days. Although the outright winner was Doug he declined his prize as he had donated them. So the winners were FIRST Bill Reade with a total weight for both days of 103.88kgs SECOND Terry Screen with a total weight for both days of 78.68kgs The total amount of fish caught in the two days was 601.20kgs which works out for each day to 25kgs per angler, and a good couple of days fishing had by all TIGHT LINES Terry Screen

CD Torrevieja 1-4 Borriol

too did not shoot early, instead allowing Edi in the Borriol goal to advance close to

It all ends in tears A final humiliation for CD Torrevieja saw them lose 4-1 at home in front of a miserly crowd, with players in tears at the final whistle, emotionally charged with the ignominy of relegation out of the National Spanish football league. It had started extremely well with Torry playing bright attractive football. The manager gave several younger players the opportunity to show their skills and all did that magnificently. Teenager Lewis Booker captained the side with grit and determination, winning key tackles in midfield and using the ball intelligently. Joel, Damian and Nica all looked comfortable, able to show the talent they have and dominating the opposition. Before the quarter hour mark, Torry were

in front. Precise passing down the right allowed the ultra consistent Vicente Boix to pass the ball to Damian just inside the Borriol penalty area. Damian with his back to goal, held off his marker, then swivelled sweetly on to his left foot and drove the ball low into the far corner of the net. Torry should have led 3-0 at half time, as two wonderful chances were spurned soon after. Borja Mir made an intelligent diagonal run and was given an inch perfect pass. He gathered the ball inside the box, took it round the keeper but then instead of hitting it first time, delayed his shot until the angle was so acute that the best he could do was to ram it into the side netting. Damian then was presented with a glorious chance, when five yards free inside the box. He

him and smother his effort. Torry's lead lasted until 51 minutes

when Borriol equalised in bizarre fashion. A high ball was launched at the Torry goal and Buba followed it unhindered. He caught it a few feet from his goal line, but then continued to back pedal, carrying the ball and himself into the net! It was an astonishing piece of ineptness and was all the encouragement the visitors needed. Nine minutes later, Badre put Borriol ahead before the referee awarded a penalty for a foul which was committed just outside the penalty area. Colomer put Buba the wrong way to make it 3-1. Shortly after Pedreno made a triple substitution, bringing on his senior personnel, one of whom was Lewis Allen. The young Brit added more spirit and strength to attacks and almost pulled one back for the side when he dashed on to the end of a good pass and lobbed the keeper only to see the wind take his shot wide of the far post. As it happened Hector added a fourth for Borriol to finish off a resoundingly miserable day for CD Torrevieja and their fans. Farewells were bade and embraces exchanged, with best wishes communicated and hopes expressed that all would meet again. Fans left the ground knowing they would follow their team in the Preferente come September and buoyed with the prospect of seeing away matches, as well as home games, with clubs all residing within the Alicante region. They also vowed to put as much pressure on the Town Hall as possible to repair the Vicente Garcia and get the club back where they belong. Jeff Scott Vice president CD Torrevieja
