Blackmailing burglar arrested

A

burglar who forced his victims to be photographed naked has been arrested in Alicante. The thief used social media to befriend his victims, most of whom live in the Alicante region. The man’s modus operandi was to initiate contact with women on social networking sites and after a period of contact they would arrange to meet. After he had

gained the trust of the victim, he would be invited to their home where he would threaten the women with a large knife, forcing them to strip naked to be photographed by him. He would then proceed to rob their belongings, threatening meanwhile that if they reported the crime to the police, he would publicise the naked photographs. The National Police made the arrest of the 41 year old Spanish man after learning of at least three such burglaries in the Alicante zone. The arrest was backed by two existing judicial notices for false imprisonment, robbery with violence and intimidation and fraud, said police. Officers began to look in to the man’s

movements in mid April after receiving several separate reports of robberies in the area, each of which had significant similarities in how the robbery was carried out. The perpetrator is thought to have used a number of different names on various social networks in order to gain his victims’ trust online and establish personal contact with the women. Once he had their trust, he would push to meet them at their own homes. As soon as the man gained access to the victim’s home, he would draw a large knife and the threats would begin – forcing each to strip and be photographed. He stole personal valuables by ransacking the house and

also took bank cards, forcing the victims to reveal the pin number. Once he had taken all that he could find, the man would threaten that he would put the photographs online if they went to the police to report the crime and that if they had given him a false pin number, he would come back to kill them. He then took the keys of the house and all mobile phones, leaving the victims locked inside their own homes while he went to the bank to withdraw cash with the stolen cards. Following extensive investigation and surveillance, officers from the Organised Crime Group of the Provincial Commission of Alicante were able to make the arrest earlier this month and this week, it was ruled that the man be sent to prison for his crimes. In court, it emerged that he has numerous police records for violent robberies, threatening behaviour and fraud from all over Spain.

‘Zero alcohol’ rule for BITE SIZE new and professional NEWS: drivers considered Continued from page 3

Spain’s traffic authorities are considering reducing the alcohol limit to zero for new and young drivers and those who do so professionally, including road-haulage and taxi drivers. Head of the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) Gregorio Serrano says the move will ‘remove potential killers from Spain's roads’ and recalls that in some countries, the zero rule already applies. Already, in Spain, the alcohol limit is one of the lowest in Europe – less than a small glass of wine on a full stomach for a woman of average build – but even after the recent deaths of three cyclists in Oliva hit national news headlines, reports have continued to flood in of drivers caught between three and six times over the limit. This said, none of those caught so far and reported on are young or new drivers, or professionals – in fact, the woman who killed three members of Jávea triathlon team in Oliva is aged 28. At present, the alcohol limit of 0.25 milligrams per litre of breath – barely a small glass of wine – is reduced by 40 percent for new and professional drivers, to 0.15. This is less than half a glass of wine,

so there is no point in there being a limit at all as it effectively means that even a couple of mouthfuls of an alcoholic drink would render a driver illegal, thus precluding him or her from ordering a glass at all. Drink and drug-drivers who reoffend will lose their licence altogether following medical checks, Serrano says. “People who persistently drink and drive do not have an 'awareness problem'; they know they're not supposed to do it. What they have is a drink problem,” he said. New drivers of any age may be affected by the new zero rule, although it is largely aimed at younger adults. In Spain, a person has to be 18 years of age at least before they can start to learn to drive and, until they pass their test, are not allowed behind the wheel even offroad except in a driving-school car with a registered instructor. Many Spanish adults do not start learning until they are in their early 20s, typically waiting until they have finished university, and a 'young driver' for insurance purposes is considered to be aged 26 or under.

transport difficulties specifically congestion on the roundabouts surrounding the market and the frequency of buses. Now the town council has announced that the frequency of buses will be increased from every 30 minutes to every 20 minutes. The first bus will leave at 8 o’clock from the Eras de la Sal interchange and the second at 8.20am. Changes have been made following feedback received from the police and the Protección Civil.Drivers are being advised to use the Avenidas de Cortes Valencianas and Monge and Bielsa to avoid the congestion on the Avenida de Rosa Mazón. The good news is that fewer robberies were reported at the new market site last week. The enclosed nature of the site acts as a deterrent against potential pickpockets and other thieves. Overall, the new market would seem to be a success. With tweaks to bus provision and attention to the flow of traffic, it should become even more popular.

Age concern summer fair

Walk for Life Maria and the Pink Ladies are busily preparing for the biggest event of the fundraising year, the 2017 Walk for Life. The annual 5k event will be held at Playa Flamenca promenade with the 5 euro registration money going directly to the AECC. Registration opens at 9am with the walk beginning at 10.30am. All walkers and those gong along to support the event are asked to enter the fun spirit of the day and show solidarity to those affected by cancer by wearing pink fancy dress outfits or clothing. This will be the eighth annual walk organised by Maria and the Pink Ladies, first one being held in 2010. In total they have raised nearly 87,000euros, and last year around 500 walkers raised 13,500€. Following the walk there will be an afternoon of fun and entertainment with Sunshine FM and a number of local performers. As always there will be food and drink vendors and market stalls for those looking for a bargain. For further information or to pre-register call 965 329 841 or 633 487 595. Maria and the Pink Ladies would also like to thank La Siesta Ladies Friendship Group for its very kind donation of 150 euros and JJ and Rob of JJ's Cafe Bar, Via Park 5, who’s charity event raised a tremendous 730 euros.

Polish visit to Torrevieja A group of professors from different universities in Poland visited Torrevieja in order to see at first hand the town and opportunities here linked to nature and the sea. The trip was organised by the Department of Tourism. For some years now sailing teams have visited Torrevieja from Poland and Russia and have trained here from October to April, taking advantaged of the climate. The town hall has collaborated with local businesses to offer nautical activities and other leisure events to raise awareness of what Torrevieja can offer alongside its capacity for training. They have also been mindful that whilst training, family and friends may visit and be encouraged to spend more time in the town. Continued on page 6

The scandal of the BITE SIZE monster buildings NEWS: Continued from page 5

Visitors to Torrevieja cannot fail to be impressed by the range of magnificent public buildings and auditoriums that the town can boast. With the Municipal Theatre, the Sports Palace and the International Auditorium being just three startling examples of elaborate construction promising the best in creativity and sports provision for its town people to enjoy. However, visitors might not be quite so impressed to find out that one of these is closed completely, another only semi functional and the last hardly ever used. What has happened to these iconic buildings that have absorbed so much of the tax payers’ money to be left standing vacant or underused? In an article by Pere Rostoll in Diario Informacion (19/05/2017) the history of the International Auditorium and the Centro Cultural in Benidorm are examined. He looks at some of the politics behind the buildings and the reasons why now, the townspeople are getting so little use out of the money that was spent on their behalf. Rostoll claims that these multi-million euro infrastructures were built without

really paying attention to the needs of the town’s people but rather through political interests and shenanigans between regional, provincial and municipal governments. The auditorium, built in 2011, is closed more often than it is open. An impressive building, it lacks some basic amenities that people would expect from an auditorium of this size and design. The auditorium is the venue for the occasional show but has no ongoing programme and doesn’t even have a website. It should also be remembered that not only do these buildings go unused but they are still draining public funds. It is estimated that the auditorium soaks up around €360,000 annually, just keeping it maintained whether it is used or not. Rostoll refers to the role of the Valencian government with its legacy of Francisco Camps and the PP. Both Francisco Camps and the previous PP mayor of Torrevieja, Pedro Hernandez Mateo, have faced court proceedings. Pedro Hernandez Mateo was sentenced to three years in prison for his role in the falsification of documents in relation to the refuse service in the town. Whoever is to blame, Torrevieja has a legacy of buildings erected during a period of boom when bidding for contracts was not always practised and the larger and more splendid the design the better. Now the people of Torrevieja and its local and regional government are counting the cost of this over glamorous inheritance that they really can’t afford to keep. Suzanne O’Connell

Budget 2017 The attempt to get a budget passed in Torrevieja continues. Now José Hurtado, has announced that it should be approved by the middle of July. The town is now at the stage of the final, draft budget being presented. For the budget to be passed it needs the agreement of the town’s ruling councillors as well as the two ciudadanos councillors and two sueñas councillors. The PP are not expected to approve the budget. José Hurtado accepts that after the very lengthy process that budgetsetting has taken to date, there are still likely to be amendments. However, there is now an end in sight.

Final call for Mack and Mabel There are just a few tickets left for the performance of Mack and Mabel by Studio32. The show dates are from Wednesday May 31st to Saturday June 3rd at the Cardenal Belluga Theatre in San Fulgencio. All the performances start at 7.30pm and tickets cost nine euros. Tickets can be reserved by calling Philip o 602 454 033, or by emailing tickets@studiothirtytwo.org. A seating plan is available on their website www.studiothirtytwo.org, along with lots of information about the company and past shows. Suzanne O’Connell

Ridding the beaches of cigarette butts

Out and about collecting for cancer

In an attempt to keep the beaches clean and free from cigarette ends the town council has launched a new initiative that includes 3,000 portable and reusable ashtrays. The councillor for the environment, Fanny Serrano, and the councillor for beaches Javier Manzanares presented the new initiative on Thursday 18th May.

The AECC La Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer has once again launched its campaign to collect money to help cancer research. Today, Tuesday 23rd May they place an information desk in Calle Concepción and on Wednesday 24th in the Plaza Encarnación Pujol and in La Mata. The volunteers will be out in streets with the familiar green boxes and can be easily identified as associated with the AECC. If you do donate, they would like to reassure you that the majority of this money goes to cancer research. Thanks to cancer research the survival rate for this disease has increased by 20% during the last 20 years. This is the result of new treatment, early diagnosis and better targeted medicine and care. Research is crucial as a means of preventing, identifying and curing this disease. One in every four

Councilllor Serrano and Councillor Manzanares with the beach ashtrays

Councillor Serrano explained that one of the requests of the town’s people is that they don’t have to clear the sand of cigarette butts before putting down their towels. ‘We don’t want it to look as though this campaign is encouraging people to smoke,’ said Councillor Serrano. The message on each ashtray is ‘No fumes. Pero si lo haces utiliza este cenicero.’‘Don’t smoke. But if you do, use this ashtray.’ The mini ashtrays will be distributed amongst the beach bars and kiosks so that they can be handed out to clients. They will also begiven out when festival season begins. Each ashtray has the capacity to hold up to 20 cigarette ends and can be placed in the sand. It has a top so that you can contain the contents until throwing them in the bin. Suzanne O’Connell

women and one in every three men will get cancer at some point in their lives in Spain. AECC is a private organisation focused on research. Since 2009, 29 million euros has been raised and the organisation has contributed to 161 research projects across 46 centres in Spain. AECC contributes to the daily work of 100 Spanish scientists of different levels from technicians to pre and post doctor and specialists. It has also provided scholarships for 230 students who are working in laboratories since 2010. Thanks to the generosity of the people of Torrevieja we are contributing our little grain of sand towards making the cure for cancer a reality rather than a dream. Suzanne O’Connell

Whales spotted off the coast of Torrevieja Three finback whales of more than 16 metres long were seen off the coast of Torrevieja on Thursday. It is believed that the whales were on route; migrating from the Ligurian sea to the Strait of Gibraltar. The whales usually make this journey later in the summer but were clearly visible from land as they were around 2,000 metres off the coast.

Whales spotted off the coast of Torrevieja

The finback whale is the second largest whale after the blue whale and there are a significant number in the Mediterranean. The whales were spotted on Thursday between 8am and 9.30am. It is believed that the largest of the whales was between 16 and 18 metres long and the other two were slightly smaller at 12 to 15 metres. Although it is not unusual for them to be spotted in other areas of the Alicante coastline, such as the Marina Alta, they are not usually seen near Torrevieja. The whales were travelling at a speed of around 10-12 knots although they paused to feed. The whales weigh between 30 and 90 tonnes and can eat around 2,000 kilos of food. They particularly like to feast on prawns, small squids and small fish. Suzanne O’Connell

San Miguel family battles Experts call for nutritional for foster daughter’s return education, parents and teachers opposed A family from San Miguel de Salinas protested outside the Ministry for Foreign Affairs in Madrid yesterday (22nd May) to request that their foster daughter be repatriated immediately. They say that Koria Babdab, (below right) who is 24 years old and has serious health problems, has been held by the Polysarian Front in the Algerian desert for the last six years. Bienvenida Campillo, who is an IU party councillor in San Miguel, and José Vicente Mañogil took Koria into foster care from 2000 to 2010 as part of the Vacaciones en Paz (Holidays in Peace) programme. Although she was originally supposed to spend just a few months in San Miguel, but in the end she had to stay after it was discovered that she has severe heart problems. Koria lived a fully integrated life in Spain until six years ago when she was taken in Tinduf in Algeria whilst she was returning to Spain after spending some time with her biological family. Since then her San Miguel family has had no contact with her, although in April this year they were able to talk to her on the telephone, but only for a few minutes. The young woman asked her foster family, “please don't stop, I need you to help me as soon as possible. Don't take long because I'm very tired,” explained

Councillor Campillo in a blog. During the last six years Bienvenida Campillo has kept on fighting to get Koria returned to San Miguel, and in February presented a complaint to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights against the Polysarian Front and Algeria, who she accused of allowing violation of her daughter’s and other youngsters’ human rights. Last Friday San Miguel Town Hall

approved a motion for the appropriate action to be taken to ask for the young woman back. This motion will also be passed to other local Town Halls to ask them for support. Along with this family there will be three other families from Tenerife, Sevilla and Huelva outside the Ministry, who all have girls in a similar situation.

Nutritionists are campaigning for healthy eating to become a core subject in the school curriculum to target the growing child obesity problem in Spain, but have come up against opposition from parents. Whilst the Spanish Nutrition Foundation (FEN) argues that 20 percent of children aged six to nine are already clinically overweight – not just ‘a bit tubby’ or suffering from ‘puppy fat’ – meaning learning about healthy dietary habits is becoming a national emergency, parents say the curriculum should not be changed ‘every time a new social debate arises’. A report presented in European Parliament, backed by Spain's health and education ministries, was approved by a near-unanimous majority, but so far, no action has been taken in any EU member State. Nutrition is covered in short-term modules or projects, but is not taught regularly throughout pupils' school careers, meaning they tend to forget even basic knowledge of food and health very quickly, the FEN says. Children of all ages diagnosed as clinically obese – considered the benchmark for being dangerously overweight – are rising in number and getting very close to one in five, a similar percentage to those of early primary school years who are not obese, but still medically overweight.

Excess body weight is a high risk factor in some of the most commonly-fatal conditions, including Type II diabetes, heart and circulatory conditions, and cancer, as well as being a major danger factor for degenerative joint conditions with overweight people being far more likely to need knee and hip replacements at a much younger age than those of a healthy size, often as early as their 40s or 50s. But chairman of the Spanish Confederation of Parent-Teacher Associations (CEAPA), José Luis Pazos, says: “What we cannot do is start creating brand-new subjects in response to every social debate that comes up, because it messes with the curriculum,” Pazos argues. “The most important issue is to work harder on the nutrition content within other subjects, and make the school canteen an integral part of the education process.” Co-owner of El Celler de Can Roca in Girona, Joan Roca – whose eatery was picked as third-best in the world by the British magazine Restaurant – says nutritional education is ‘very important and should start to be seriously considered as a priority’ in schools. Celebrity chef Carme Ruscalleda (left) stresses that unhealthily, overweight children are ‘not an inheritance of Spain's culinary history’.

More protests against multi-lingual plans Valenciano is the regional language taught and spoken in Valencia alongside that of castellano, the traditional Spanish language.

T

here are controversial plans to raise the amount of valenciano taught at the expense of castellano from September. The plans have angered many parents and a large group of these came out on Saturday 20th May to protest in Alicante. This protest was more than the usual trickle of people. There was a good turnout to demonstrate against the law which will see the youngest children receiving more of their lessons delivered in valenciano, a purely regional language. The crowd carried multi-coloured balloons and placards to get their message across to the councillor for education, Vicent Marzà, that they want to choose the language that their children are taught in. One of the concerns expressed by the population is that if they are taught in valenciano, parents will have difficulty helping them with the copious

amounts of homework that their children receive. Many parents speak a limited amount of valenciano and those migrating from other parts of Spain and other countries speak none at all. The police suggested that there were around 6,000 attending the protest who came in buses from all around the province including the Vega Baja, Almoradí, Callosa de Segura, Elche and Calpe. Altogether 14 buses brought protestors to add their voice to the call for the law to be withdrawn. Ruth Martínez from Vicenta Ruso school in Santa Pola protested that there are many families in Gran Alicant who are immigrants and are not being informed about the language that their children will be taught on enrolment. Reasons for Although to foreigners it can seem strange that a small part of Spain should promote its language above that of the national tongue, students at some of Torrevieja’s secondary schools understand why some people support the plans. ‘We have to study some subjects in valenciano at secondary level,’ explains Helena. ‘This is very difficult for us because we are not fluent in valenciano. I think it is a good idea for children to have more taught at primary level so that when they get to secondary school it is not so hard for them to study.’

Maria agrees. ‘I find valenciano very difficult but I need it if I want to become a teacher here. I know that in Torrevieja we are different and have many nationalities and English is very important for us too. However, in other parts of the region valenciano is spoken more. Torrevieja is an exception.’ Perhaps, the issue isn’t just what’s taught in the schools but goes further into the requirements to work in administrative jobs in the region as well as the courses of study offered at secondary level. Although some people may feel that this quibble is one purely for the Spanish and their children in schools, it also has repercussions for the foreign community. If the plans continue as expected and valenciano becomes more frequently spoken and the expected language of official communications this will be difficult for those who have settled here. The Valencian government is already pressing ahead with increasing the extent to which valenciano is spoken by officials and used in publications. Those who wish to integrate in the community may need to consider, longer term, learning it too. For those who already struggle acquiring a little castellano, this might be just too much to ask. WEEKLY EURO UPDATE Although it did not quite manage to grab the top slot the euro added an average of 1% against the other dozen most actively-traded currencies, taking two and a half cents off the US dollar and two off sterling. It lost out only to the Swiss franc, which investors saw as an even safer proposition. Their need for safety stemmed mainly from Washington, where the endless flow of controversy surrounding the White House never for

a second threatened to let up. The pound was tested by the UK economic data, some of them good, some bad. Investors were not impressed to see that inflation had overtaken the pace of wage increases but they did approve of the lowest unemployment rate in more than 40 years. Strong April retail sales sent sterling higher on Thursday but buyers lost their nerve later in the day when sterling found itself above US$1.30.

FRAUDSTER LURING BARGAIN HUNTERS WITH CHEAP LOCAL PROPERTY Reputable local agents are warning a fraudster is offering bargain properties on the Costa Blanca to trick the unsuspecting out of their deposits. The fraudster offering ridiculously cheap property on the Costa Blanca, including the Orihuela Costa, to trick victims into handing over deposits that will never be seen again. It is claimed that this is someone who used to work for a local real estate agent, copied the client database, and is now working the mailing list with astounding bargains that don’t exist.

Apparently the Police have been informed, and legal action is underway. This advice is being given to would be buyers: 1. Ensure the estate agent has an established business office 2. Check for AIPP membership 3. Do your research on the property, if it is at an unbelievable price, why is it still for sale? 4. Do your research on the agent, ask for recommendations and endorsements

Fight to save Cala Mosca continues Two important developments took place in the past week in the fight to save Cala Mosca, the last kilometre of virgin coast in Orihuela Costa from the building of 1,500 new houses. On 15th May, Bob Houliston of C.L.A.R.O., together with Marta Guillen, Councillor of the Orihuela political party Cambiemos and the regional assembly Deputy Antonio Estañ met with the Valencia government Director General for the Environment. The purpose of the visit was to follow up the meeting of the European Parliament’s Petitions Committee at the end of February which unanimously decided to request the Valencia regional government to carry out an independent Environmental Impact Study before taking a decision on the revised plan to build 1,500 new houses on Cala Mosca. According to the law as it stands, the developer is responsible for carrying out an environmental impact study before the approval of a building project. However, Members of the European Parliament’s Petitions Committee objected that this involved an obvious conflict of interest in that the developer’s overriding concern would be to justify his project rather than prioritise environmental concerns. The visiting delegation argued that it would be within the competence of the Valencia government to commission an independent environmental impact study which could have a broader objective than the developer’s study which had not given sufficient protection to two endangered species present on Cala Mosca, the impact of the building project on the environment in general or the social cost of adding potentially 5-6,000 more to the population of Orihuela Costa already suffering from

inadequate services. The Director General for the Environment undertook to consider these arguments sympathetically when deciding on the reply to be given to the European Parliament. The second development in the fight to save Cala Mosca was the surprise decision

utilities has already been provided. The decision also carries the obvious danger that the developer will accelerate his plans to build on the so far virgin southern part of Cala Mosca in order to avoid the prohibition which would be applied after the 5 year transitional period. However, something is better than

of the Valencia Government to reverse its earlier decision to exclude Cala Mosca from its new coastal protection plan. Announcing a modification to its initial proposal, the Valencia government included the southern third of Cala Mosca in its coastal protection plan but as a transitional measure which would prevent construction if the developer failed to carry out a building project within a period of 5 years.

nothing. The southern part of Cala Mosca is the most environmentally sensitive part where the endangered species are concentrated. Authority to build on this area would obviously be subject to very strict conditions. C.L.A.R.O said in a statement: “The fight to save this emblematic remaining kilometre of virgin coast continues. There is important support to prevent its massive urbanisation. It is a pity that the present Popular Party-Citizens party government of Orihuela has not lifted a finger to assist in this hugely important cause.”

More needed While this is a welcome recognition of the importance of protecting Cala Mosca, it does not go far enough. It does not protect the northern two thirds of the area on which, although there is no house building, the infrastructure of streets, pavements and

Back to flowering plants this week as we are over half way through May and it is now hot!

CENTRANTHUS GAURA LINDHEIMERI RUBER (valerian, red valerian, Jupiter’s (Lindheimer’s Beeblossom, White Gaura, Pink beard, spur valerian) Gaura, Lindheimer’s Clockweed, Indian Feather) This is a native of the Mediterranean region although it has been introduced into many other parts of the world. This is a loosely branched perennial with a woody base. The leaves are oval to lance-shaped and roughly 5-8cm in length. The plant has clusters of small flowers at the ends of the branches and flowers profusely. Although the flowers are small individually, as they grow into inflorescences this really shows their splendour. Their aroma isn’t that nice and rather strong but the insects like them, including bees and butterflies who pollinate them! The flowers come generally in a purplish red colour but they also have white and lavender coloured ones too. They flower from May-June and again in September, but less so in autumn. They can self seed as their seeds are similar to dandelions with tufts on them so can travel with the wind. I have seen them on the sides of the roads many a time. It is an edible plant with the leaves being used in a salad or lightly boiled and the roots bolied in soups. This is a drought tolerant plant.

This is a perennial herbaceous plant which has dark green oval leaves above which the flowers hang on long stems that arch over. It originates from the southern states mainly Texas and Louisiana and is relatively short-lived.. It grows from 50150cm tall and has underground rhizomes that

produce densely clustered stems. The leaves have fine hairs on them are lanceolate, roughly 1-9cm long and 1-13mm broad with a coarsely toothed amrgin. The flowers are pink or white, 2-3 cm in

diameter with four petals 10-15mm long. They have long hairlike stamens and are produced from the beginning of spring until the first frost, although really the best months of flowering are June right through to October. This also is a drought tolerant plant as it thrives in the hot sun! Therefore if you have a dry garden this is an ideal plant for such an area. It is a pretty plant and will cheer up any dry beds by flowering continuously without having to be tended to or watered, so very easy to grow. All that needs to be done is when it is over it’s flowering period-so early winter-just trim it back so that it will be ready to flower once again in the late spring/early summer. This is also a plant that self-seeds as the one above (Centranthus rubber). If you want to plant the seeds yourself to ensure growth then you can do this with cuttings also and doing so in the late summer is probably the best time of sowing the seeds, then you can plant them out in October. Spain demands UK investigation

Spain has demanded that the UK investigates the spike in xenophobic attacks against Spaniards following the Brexit vote. Spain has contacted the UK and ordered an investigation into 'racist attacks' on Spanish tourists and those living in Britain. Following the Brexit referendum vote, an upsurge in xenophobic insults and assaults was reported in the UK, mostly targeting Polish expats, but a small number of Spaniards have also suffered. Tomás Gil, 27, who was speaking to his companion in Spanish in Poole, Dorset – both of whom were believed to be tourists – was beaten with a broken billboard and told to ‘speak in English’. The incident was caught on CCTV and was

Explosive device found on Mar Menor beach Explosives experts have detonated a phosphorus flare found by a man catching the rays on Estacio beach in La Manga del Mar Menor. The concerned fisherman contacted the Guardia Civil when he saw what looked like a bomb on the sand, but luckily it turned out to be an unfired signal flare.

In its unexploded state, however, it was still potentially dangerous, so divers from the EOD detonation squad were called in. The experts removed it safely and took it to the Guardia Civil headquarters in Cartagena to neutralise it. The Guardia Civil, who are

Mental health awareness ADIEM (Asociación para la Defensa e Integración del Enfermo Mental) is the association in Spain which dedicates itself to support for and awareness raising of mental health issues in the community. On Sunday 21st May the Vega Baja branch of ADIEM celebrated their 20th birthday with a giant paella and cake in Torrevieja. The organisation was not only celebrating its 20th birthday but recognising the struggle to get people with mental health difficulties integrated into society. During the past 20 years, ADIEM has helped more than 2,000 people in the Vega Baja region. The association was founded in 1997 with the aim of improving services for those with mental health difficulties as well as defending their rights. The association has eight centres located in Torrevieja, Orihuela and Almoradi and four houses in which 20 people live independent lives with the aim of recovering from mental health difficulties. Members of the

association also visit people at home and in sheltered housing. ADIEM provides support for some 250 people every year and their celebration yesterday was attended by the mayor of Torrevieja, José Manuel Dolón. Around 230 people took part in the celebration and enjoyed the games, food and final raffle of shoes donated by a company in Elche. Many of these were people who had benefited from the support of ADIEM over the years. One of the difficulties that ADIEM seeks to address is the stigma surrounding people with mental health difficulties. Their message is that people with mental health difficulties are suffering from a disease just like any other. Of particular concern is the spread of mental health issues amongst young people. Reaching schools and raising awareness amongst teachers is important so that they can help identify when a student needs help. Suzanne O’Connell

military-trained police, have a bombdetonation diving team in-house, which works with the Naval Anti-Mine Measures Diving Unit – the UBMCM – as well as the land-based explosives team, TEDAX. These Armed Forces experts are the only specialists permitted to deal with incendiary devices in Spain. Usually, they are called out to neutralise Civil War bombs, which occasionally wash up on beaches 80 years after the conflict, but which can still go off if handled and should be left well alone by members of the public.

widely reported, leading to the perpetrator being prosecuted. A Spanish-run restaurant serving typical dishes from different parts of the country was also attacked, with the windows smashed and the façade covered in graffiti reading ‘Spics go home!’ These are not thought to be isolated incidences, given that many Spaniards in the UK do not report general insults or threats, only contacting the police if they suffer physical violence. And the embassy and consular offices say no xenophobic assaults or verbal attacks have been reported to them. Now that they have been informed through a written communication by left-wing opposition party Podemos, consulates and the embassy have made contact with the victims and offered assistance. Podemos has since tabled a parliamentary question to the government asking for information on how many xenophobic attacks have been reported by Spaniards in the UK and what is being done to tackle the growing numbers. Spain’s government said: “We have sent details of specific cases of which we are aware to the UK’s Foreign Office and Home Office and have requested an

investigation”. The Foreign Office and Home Office in London have been asked by Podemos to investigate. Both say they only found out about racist attacks on Spaniards through the press or social media. Now, the Spanish embassy has uploaded a message onto its website urging any victims to let them know, and says it will keep both the Home Office and Foreign Office informed, asking them to follow up any cases reported. It reads: “The Spanish Embassy in London and its consulates in London and Edinburgh have been aware of various incidents and attacks that have affected Spanish citizens residing or passing through the United Kingdom. “For this reason, it is advisable to report to the British police and to inform the Embassy and Consulates of any incident or aggression, so that it is possible to give the necessary attention to the victims and their families and to carry out the appropriate follow-up with the British authorities.” Almost 5,500 racially or religiously motivated offences were reported to police in the month after the Brexit vote on 23rd June last year.

Stagestruck delight the audience On Thursday 11th May to Saturday 13th May, Stagestruck performed their own version of ‘Carry on Pompeii’ at the Cardenal Belluga Theatre in San Fulgencio. Although it was based upon the popular Frankie Howerd Carry on series of 1969/ 70, Leigh Humphries who wrote the script, made sure this musical comedy appealed to its 2017 Costa Blanca audience. The audience met characters such as Saliva the Soothsayer, Nefarius the Slave Trader, Grovello the head slave to the Senator and Geriatricus. They were entertained with a number of songs and the feedback from the audience was very positive. ‘It was our most successful show to date in terms of ticket sales and positive feedback,’ says Leigh Humphries who also directed the performance. ‘The verbal feedback I received included the amazing sets, the professionalism, singing, costumes and the script. Just about everything really.’ The mop dance at the beginning of the performance was particularly wellreceived and the skill that was needed to put together the timber props did not go unnoticed. Individually or as a group many went home following the performance feeling cheered and looking forward to their next show. ‘We were a total of 7,’ wrote one

member of the audience, ‘that showed up for the Thursday show and we were amazed to find such talent, elaborate costumes and the stage work was fantastic. We came away with many laughs and good memories and hope we

can come to another show sometime.’ It was certainly an appreciative audience with comments including: ‘Brilliant show. Loved it. Well done everyone’; ‘The show was excellent’; ‘We thoroughly enjoyed your excellent show’ to include only a few. The group will now be donating €4,500 to charity as a result of the performance and are delighted that they have been able to raise so much money. Of course, their rehearsals might pause but it won’t be long before they are preparing for their next show. In November they will perform Robin Hood and the Babes in the Wood. As usual we can expect some twists to the original script and an entertaining evening for all. Suzanne O’Connell

WELCOME TO STOCKHOLM with Vivalia Travel Stockholm is the cultural, media, political and economic dentre of Sweden, and also one of the most crowded museum-cities in the world

STOCKHOLM is the capital of Sweden and the most populous city in the Nordic countries; 932,917 people live in the municipality, approximately 1.5 million in the urban area, and 2.3 million in the metropolitan area. The city is spread across a total of 17 islands on the coast in the southeast of Sweden at the mouth of Lake Mälaren, by the Stockholm archipelago and the Baltic Sea. Stockholm is the cultural, media, political, and economic centre of Sweden. History Stockholm became a modern, technologically advanced, and ethnically diverse city in the latter half of the 20th century. Many historical buildings were torn down during the modernist era, including substantial parts of the historical district of Klara, and replaced with modern architecture. However, in many other parts of Stockholm (such as in Gamla stan, Södermalm, Östermalm, Kungsholmen and Vasastan), many "old" buildings, blocks and streets built before the modernism and functionalism movements took off in Sweden (around 1930–1935) survived this era of demolition. Throughout the century, many industries shifted away from work-intensive activities into more high-tech and service industry areas. Climate Stockholm, with a February mean of −3.0 °C (26.6 °F), had a humid continental climate (Köppen Dfb) for the most recent official reference period. Due to the city's high northerly latitude, daylight varies widely from more than 18 hours around midsummer, to only around 6 hours in late December. Stockholm has relatively mild weather compared to other locations at similar

latitude, or even farther south. With an average of just over 1800 hours of sunshine per year, it is also one of the sunniest cities in Northern Europe, receiving more sunshine than Paris, London and a few other major European cities of a more southerly latitude. In Stockholm, the aurora borealis can occasionally be observed. Culture The Stockholm region is home to three of Sweden's World Heritage Sites – spots judged as invaluable places that belong to all of humanity: The Drottningholm Palace, Skogskyrkogården (The Woodland Cemetery) and Birka. In 1998, Stockholm was named European Capital of Culture. Museums Stockholm is one of the most crowded museum-cities in the world with around 100 museums, visited by millions of people every year. The Vasa Museum (Swedish: Vasamuseet) is a maritime museum on Djurgården which displays the only almost fully intact 17th century ship that has ever been salvaged, the 64gun warship Vasa that sank on her maiden voyage in 1628. The Nationalmuseum houses the largest collection of art in the country: 16,000 paintings and 30,000 objects of art handicraft. The collection dates back to the days of Gustav Vasa in the 16th century, and has since been expanded with works by artists such as Rembrandt, and Antoine Watteau, as well as constituting a main part of Sweden's art heritage, manifested in the works of Alexander Roslin, Anders Zorn, Johan Tobias Sergel, Carl Larsson, Carl Fredrik Hill and Ernst Josephson. Moderna Museet (Museum of Modern Art) is Sweden's national museum of modern art. It has works by noted modern artists such as Picasso and Salvador Dalí.

Discover the real Spain ■ MIREILLE TODDINGTON

T

hose looking to explore the ‘real Spain’ are being offered tailored trips and tours that aim to offer something completely different to those organised by large tour companies. These, arranged by local Spanish lady Begona Josa del Portillo, aim to discover the hidden gems of Spanish heritage and culture, with traditional food and wine weaved in for good measure. For many years Begona has been an integral link between the local Spanish and ex-pat communities offering Spanish language and Spanish cooking lessons.

Morella

It is the popularity of these courses and the influence of her students that has led to Begona organising tailored trips and tours. The next trip organised by Begona is to Morella and Peniscola in the north of Castellon. This region is steeped in history. In the 14th Century the was a unique phenomenon, there were not one but two Popes in the world; the Pope in Rome and another living in Avignon, France, known as Papa Luna. Papa Luna came to live to Spain in Peñiscola and Morella. There is a huge amount of history connected to this story in the region and this will form the basis of the tour, taking in the

heritage he encouraged and the legacy he left behind. Peñiscola is a beautiful town on the coast and Morella is an inland medieval Town. The hotel in Morella that Begona has booked is a stunning converted palace linked directly to Papa Luna.

Peñiscola

The trip will take place on the 8th, 9th and 10th June. The price includes coach travel, a double room, full board and local tour guides who have excellent historical knowledge and know all the hidden gems. Places are limited so speedy booking is advised; to do so please call Begona on 622 188 772. Begona said: “I always like to offer something extra and special; I don’t use run of the mill hotels, but centrally located boutique-style accommodations that reflect the character of the area and I arrange meals in traditional, good quality, restaurants used by local diners. The food and wine is always excellent and reflects the typical local cuisine and traditional regional dishes. I never have more than 20 people booked, this way the group soon get to know each other and there is always a great sense of fun and camaraderie.” Several local pick up and drop off points are available for passengers and range from Los Alcazares to Torrevieja. The first evening will be spent at the converted palace and the second at a 4 star hotel in the old town of Peniscola where the group will take a scenic evening train tour. On the final day of the trip, the group will have lunch at a privately owned traditional Spanish country house.

SIX STEPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL PURCHASE Rebecca Serwotka Your favourite local property expert, of Inmobiliaria Real Estate Agents in Ciudad Quesada & published author of “Moving Forward – 25 Essential Rules For Buying & Selling Real Estate Without Going Crazy.” Request your FREE copy today! Compared to in the U.K., purchasing a property here can be very easy, as long as you go about it the correct way. Preparation is key to success, so I want to prepare you for a successful home purchase. Six steps for a successful purchase: 1. Buyer Analysis: Decide first, what kind of home you’re looking for: apartment, villa, duplex? . What area or neighbourhood do you prefer? . What is your price point? 2. Are your finances in place? You’ll need a local bank account.Do you have the money in place or will you be requiring a mortgage? To open a Spanish bank account, you’ll need this: * PASSPORT * N.I.E. Certificate (Spanish Tax Number) * PROOF OF ADDRESS; * 6 Months Bank Statements Plus the following, if it’s a mortgage in Spain you’ll be applying for: * Last P-60 * Latest 3 Salary Slips * Tax Return * Letter From Employer (stating occupation, title, income, bonuses and length of occupation) * Other Sources Of Income (investments, savings, rentals, tenancy agreements private pensions, state pensions, etc.)

Emergency Plan for Costa parks and gardens

Work underway

The Orihuela councillors responsible for Services on the Coast, Luisa Boné, and Infrastructure, Juan Ignacio López-Bas, have announced that more people have been added to the team of municipal staff working on the emergency plan for the maintenance and recovery of Parks and gardens in Orihuela Costa. Additional support has become necessary due to the need to attend to many more public spaces than originally planned. The sheer size of the task at hand for both departments is considerable and the councillors are een to achieved as much as possible during May, with the

beginning of the summer season inching closer and the coast already seeing the number of visitors increase over recent weeks. Councillor Lopez-Bas said that “in view of the state in which the coastal parks were found it has been decided to temporarily transfer two Infrastructure staff brigades, one of four people from parks and gardens and another from works, also with four people, to expand and accelerate the task of restoring green areas in Orihuela Costa”. Councillor Boné pointed out that “the reinforcement on the coast by the Infrastructures Department is much needed

and necessary, especially at this moment in time, before the summer when the coast begins to receive more residents and tourists”. Several public green areas have already been tackled and this has made a substantial improvement. These include Urbanisation Horizonte, La Florida, La Zenia, Los Dolses and Las Piscinas, among other areas. Both councillors said they positively value the work already done through this emergency plan for Orihuela Costa which has been carried out as the first major project on the coast since the the Ciudadanos councillors joined the government team at the end of January. Councillor Bone said:

We want people to begin to notice an important change in the public spaces of the coast of Orihuela. This is a change of image that must be maintained and endure over time with more allocation of material and manpower from the 2017 budget.

Credit Report (Experian, Equifax, etc.) Declaration Of Assets (property, investments, etc.) Pension Income (if applicable) Purchase Contract Proof Of Deposit Paid 3. When viewing homes, don’t make the major mistake of looking at too many. Try to let your trusted Real Estate Agent narrow your favourites down for you. If they’re doing their job correctly, they should know which home would suit you best, and save you time and energy on the legwork! 4. Crafting your offer. This is where the magic happens! You’ve found the right home, and now you’re ready to make your offer. You need to be guided by your Real Estate Agent, as they will know more about the vendor than you. So trust their skills and let them help you make the perfect offer. One that a seller, just cannot refuse! 5. Don’t buy without a Lawyer. There are lots of people around that offer legal services to help with your purchase, but beware, if they are not a Lawyer, they cannot guarantee the legalities of the property. I’ve seen too many times, where people tell me they have a Lawyer in place, and they don’t even realize their appointed “Lawyer” is only a Fiscal Representative. Lawyers fees to do the conveyancing for a purchase should be around €1,000. 6. Do you have the correct paperwork? Apart from your passport for identification, you will need to have an N.I.E. number (Certificate). This is your Spanish tax number. You can apply for these through the Spanish Embassy in your own country, or you can apply yourself through the National Police Station, in the “foreign” (Extranjeros) department. The general cost through a Lawyer to do this on your behalf is €100 per person. If you choose to apply through the Embassy, this process is extremely slow, so be aware if you’re in the throes of applying for a Spanish mortgage and need it quickly, as the bank will not process the mortgage without having your N.I.E number. Think property? Think us, because life’s complicated enough! See our advert in the centre pages of this newspaper. www.homes4u.es

Criminal gangs rife in Murcia tv PICK RHS Chelsea Flower Show - BBC1 - 8.30pm Sophie Raworth and Joe Swift return with the latest news and highlights from the 2017 horticultural event. Carol Klein gives her tips on plant trends of the future, Mary Berry reveals how to use edible flowers to decorate cakes and the winner of the People’s Choice award is announced.

The Interior Ministry affirms there are between 30 and 50 active organised criminal gangs in the Murcia region. Meaning the region is below the mafia levels seen in Alicante and Valencia, but equivalent to Sevilla. Trafficking of cocaine, hashish and heroin, violent robberies, frauds, thefts, human trafficking, sexual exploitation and money laundering; this is the basic menu offered by the criminal organisations which are operating in Spain and constitute the largest headache for the State security forces; given the gravity and seriousness of their criminal activities and their enormous capacity to penetrate public institutions and corrupt the workers. The scope of these mafias has been uncovered by the Intelligence Centre against Terrorism and Organised Crime (Citco in Spanish), dependent on the Interior Ministry, from a report looking at 2016, which confirms the Mediterranean coastline as a hot spot. The criminal activity has not changed

much since 2015 given the two provinces of Barcelona and Madrid are hives of organised crime with more than 100 gangs in each city. Between 51 and 100 active criminal groups we find the provinces of Valencia, Alicante, Málaga and Cádiz. Between 31 and 50 active criminal groups we find the provinces of Sevilla, Murcia and Tarragona. From 21 to

39 we see Toledo and Pontevedra and between 11 to 20 in Huelva, Granada, Córdoba, Ciudad Real, Albacete, Canaries, Castellón, Zaragoza, La Rioja, Navarra and Coruña. The rest of the country has between zero and ten The main security services, National Police, Guardia Civil and Customs Vigilance are battling day by day – last year 256 of the 444 detected groups were dismantled, some 16,208 presumed criminals under investigation, a total of 5,356 arrests, the confiscation of 132 tons of hashish, 11 of cocaine, 1,717 vehicles, 125 boats or ships, 261 firearms, 182 house searches and nearly 17 million euros in cash. Value of assets recovered reached 43 million euros, 884,000 in the Murcia region. At the end of last year 6,211 investigations remained open over criminal organisations in Spain, and so far this year the security services are optimistic.

Spain to ramp up roadside alcohol tests Thousands protest in Madrid against in bid to protect cyclists bullfighting Spain’s General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) has announced tougher measures to protect cyclists following three serious accidents in the last two weeks involving drunk drivers that killed three riders and left 11 others injured. The body responsible for road safety in Spain has unveiled a plan that will see increased roadside controls for alcohol and drugs on Saturday and Sunday mornings, the times when large numbers of cyclists are out and about. Spain’s Interior Ministry says there will be an additional 130,000 alcohol and drug checks on drivers out at these times and that tougher sanctions will be applied to wrongdoers, among them driving bans for anybody found to be over the limit for a second time in two years. Once those bans have been served, they will have to undergo psychological and physical assessment before being allowed back on the roads. “The DGT and the ministry are concerned about cyclists,” said Interior

Minister Juan Ignacio Zoido. More than 400 cyclists have died on Spain’s roads in the last decade. In the last seven years, the number of accidents involving cars and bikes has doubled on both urban and non-urban roads. Academics and experts on road safety say that Spain’s infrastructure has failed to keep up with the growing numbers of cyclists now out and about, and that awareness campaigns are required, both for drivers and bike users: a recent survey suggests that more than a third of cyclists do not know the rules of the road. The DGT says it will also be monitoring Spain’s roads with a special emphasis on cyclists. This will be done using helicopters and unmarked cars, while at the same time, the authority will run awareness campaigns, as well as putting together more detailed figures on accidents involving cyclists.

Thousands of protesters took to the streets of central Madrid recently to call for bullfighting to be banned in Spain, the country that invented it. “We are fighting to end the corridas and any spectacle organised in Spain which mistreats animals for people’s amusement,” 48-year-old lawyer Sandra Barrena, one of the protesters, told Spanish news agency AFP. “Torture is not culture,” chanted the marchers, who also called for the end of all grants given to bullfighting events. In 2010, the Catalan government voted to ban deadly bullfighting in the northeast region but last year Spain’s top court overturned that decision, judging that it was part of Spain’s cultural heritage. The bullfighting tradition has drawn increasing controversy and protests around Spain in recent years, with demonstrators turning up and taking to Twitter to denounce what they feel is a brutal, anachronistic event. The recent protest followed a similar one held in Madrid last September.

Taliban attack on Spanish Embassy in Kabul report The Taliban attack against the Spanish embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan, on 11th December, 2015 was no mistake, as the Spanish government had previously claimed. A report filed with the judge investigating the case concludes that the lack of security was a determining factor in the attackers’ decision to target this particular facility. Two Spanish police officers and five Afghan counterparts died in the attack, as well as four assailants. The report was drafted by the information department of the Spanish National Police and sent to Judge Santiago Pedraz at the Audiencia Nacional, Spain’s central high court. The former ambassador to Kabul, Emilio Pérez de Ágreda and his top aide at the time, Oriol Solá, are under investigation in the case. “A determining factor that made the terrorists decide to attack the Spanish Embassy (in Kabul) was its inadequate location in an area devoid of an outer safety ring, as would have been the case if it had been located inside the Green

Zone,” reads the report, which is dated 30th March. However, it was more than bad location that made the Spanish diplomatic mission particularly vulnerable. “The three buildings it comprises are directly exposed to aggressive action from ... the adjacent buildings,” adds an annex to the report. Additionally, the metal door that was destroyed in the car bomb explosion “was malfunctioning and had to be manually pushed open and shut by the police officers.” The only security ring around the facilities was a three metre high wall, and once the suicide bombers got past that, “they found no obstacle in their way” into the buildings. The short distance between the wall and the buildings “made any reaction by security personnel impossible.” The annex also states that the electrical network was destroyed by the explosion and could not be reactivated. The police officers were literally left in the dark, unaware of how many attackers

they were facing or where they were located. A number of officers took cover in what passed for a safe room, although the report says that the room did not merit that name, as it lacked an emergency communication line with the outside world. The report demolishes the Spanish government’s claim that the Taliban were really targeting a guesthouse for foreigners, and mistakenly attacked the Spanish embassy. Afghan Deputy Interior Minister General Ayoub Salangi told investigators: “The terrorists knew they were attacking the Spanish embassy” and that it was he himself who developed the false theory about the guesthouse “in order to protect the safety of the (diplomatic) mission.” This has been ratified by the director general of Criminal Investigation at the Afghan Interior Ministry, who explained that following the terrorist attacks in Paris, in November 2015), his department received “information suggesting that the

embassies in Kabul could be attacked.” However, he believed that the main targets would be the embassies of the United States, Britain or France, not Spain. Somebody did, however, provide an early warning about the “risk of an imminent attack.” The diplomat Oriol Solá admits that he received an e-mail from the French defense attaché, but says he did not read it until after the attack because he was away from his office.

The Spanish embassy had received a similar warning in March 2015. The response was to shut down the facilities for 48 hours, evacuate all local personnel and cut off traffic on nearby streets. None of this was done on the day of the attack. Judge Pedraz has contacted the French embassy in Madrid to request a copy of the attaché’s warning message to Spanish colleagues, in order to determine what was said and when it was sent.

Should I walk away?

She's in debt

I have been with my boyfriend for five years. He lives with his father, who doesn’t work, and is a bit strange. My boyfriend says he is bipolar and is on anti-depressants. When I raised the issue of my boyfriend and I finding our own place, he said he couldn’t as his Dad wouldn’t be able to cope living on his own. I am very upset. Whenever I’ve mentioned us getting our own Apartment in the past, he has never raised any objections. It is only recently that I have been pushing for it, and have boxed him in to a corner, and now he says he can’t leave.

We have brought our daughters up to be good with money and to stand on their own two feet. We bought them a car each for their 18th. We loaned our youngest money to pay for the insurance for the first year, and she paid us back in installments. The second year’s insurance is due and she has no money. She is also max'd out on her credit card. She won’t get a job, and is asking us to lend her the insurance money again.

I suppose your boyfriend has been a little unfair by not telling you until now that he doesn’t feel he can leave his father. However, young people should not be weighed down by such a big responsibility and deserve their own lives, which is what you have probably pointed out to him. If your boyfriend is adamant that he won’t leave his father, then you might have to re-think your relationship with him.

Well, you say you have tried to bring up your daughters to know the value of money, but I would say you haven’t been tough enough. If a person cannot afford to run a car, they shouldn’t have one. If you lend her the money for the insurance again, you are teaching her nothing and she won’t be rushing to get a paying job any time soon. Personally, I would leave her to realise that she cannot ask you for money any time it suits, and perhaps she will either sell the car she cannot afford, or get a job.

Spanish woman is Rubik cube champ A Spanish woman has set the European record for solving a Rubik cube - with her eyes shut. Berta García Parra completed the task in the fastest time to scoop the accolade. Berta solved the puzzle, which left the world scratching its heads throughout the whole of the 1980s, in just

20.38 seconds during the Rubik Cube Open Championships this week in El Escorial, near Madrid, beating more than 90 other competitors. Her challengers came from all over the world, with participants from Hungary, the USA, Perú, Poland, Greece, China and

Romania, and competed in 15 categories. The top three competitors were all Spanish – Manuel Prieto solved the cube in 10.29 seconds; Alberto Pérez de Rada came second by finishing it in 11.61 seconds, and Rafael Rodríguez was third in 11.74 seconds. But Berta's achievement was even more spectacular, as she finished the Rubik puzzle in 20.38 without looking at it. She already held the national record of completing a Rubik cube in 21.44 seconds with her eyes shut, and has now beaten her own and that of Spain, as well as setting new record for Europe. Berta's time is also the third-fastest ever seen in the world. According to El Escorial Town Hall, the oldest competitor at the Championships was Jesús Masanet, aged 56, and the youngest was Alejandro Fernández, aged six.

Antonio Banderas pulls out of Malaga arts center project Spanish movie star Antonio Banderas has abandoned plans to create an arts and entertainment centre in his home town of Malaga amid accusations he was given favourable treatment by City Hall. Banderas, who has become Malaga’s unofficial cultural ambassador in recent years, had backed Ecos Urbanos, a project to renovate a block on the city’s Plaza de la Merced that currently houses two former cinemas and the house where Pablo Picasso was born. In April, the Banderas-backed plan won the first phase of a competition organised by City Hall inviting proposals on reforming the block, which it bought for €21.7 million in 2010. However, in recent weeks, opposition parties have attacked the minority Popular Party (PP)run city council’s handling of the renovation scheme, particularly in light of comments by Mayor Francisco de la Torre in late April that the presence of somebody “well-known” would be taken into account in adjudicating the winning entry in the next phase of

the competition, which was widely interpreted as a reference to Banderas. The media and users of social networks weighed in, commenting widely on the issue. Already under pressure, the actor finally decided to throw in the towel after proposals from opposition parties on the city council to annul the first phase of the competition won by the Banderas-led project. In a letter published in the regional newspaper Sur, Banderas, who divorced from

Hollywood actress Melanie Griffith in 2014, said he has based his decision on “insults, smears and humiliating treatment,” along with insinuations that he was given preferential treatment. He added that he would continue to contribute to Malaga’s cultural life, “but in a completely private way.” Architect José Seguí, who, along with promoter Starlight Productions, was working with the actor, says he too will be withdrawing from the competition in light of the developments.

Notaries report increase in March home sales Growing local and foreign demand boosted the Spanish property market in March by almost 20 percent, though the average price of property fell a fraction, reveal the latest figures from the Notaries’ Association. There were 48,695 homes sales witnessed by Spanish notaries in March, an increase of 19.5 percent compared to the same time last year (+17.1% if seasonally adjusted). The increase came exclusively from the resale market, up 20.5 percent, as new home sales fell 11.5 percent. Remember that homes sold off-plan do not count in the figures until construction is completed, and the property is delivered. Apartment sales were up 20.5 percent, and single-family home sales up 15.6 percent.

The average price of residential property sold in March, measured in terms of Euro per square metre, fell 1.3 percent to 1,227 €/m2, driven by a decline in the price of single-family homes of -6.2 percent, whilst apartments remained unchanged. If you exclude subsidised housing, the average price of a flat sold in March rose by 0.3 percent. New residential Spanish mortgage lending rose 18 percent to 21,818, the average new loan value fell 5.9 percent to €122,907. The notaries’ housing market figures are the most timely we have, and show that the recovery in sales continues unabated, though the average price shows little enthusiasm for getting off the ground. Bear in mind the average price disguises wide

regional variations, with prices surging in hot markets like Barcelona and the Balearics, whilst continuing to decline in large parts of the Spanish interior. A recent study by the appraisal company Euroval reveals that prices are now back to where they were in 2004, whilst sales are half what they were that year. There is still plenty of room for recovery, which is not to say it will continue.

Horsemeat on the menu A study claims the horsemeat is close to becoming accepted into the Spanish diet. The study, conducted by Lackiter Research Group, Mountain Livestock Institute and the Guelph Food Research Centre (Canada) have identified the possibility of the meat containing higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids, thanks to breeding conditions of the animals. It analysed the nutritional and

environmental benefits of the meat, claiming that it is an alternative protein source which produces low greenhouse gas emissions compared with beef. DR Noelia Aldai, one of the authors of the report, said: “I don’t think we are far away from Spanish people accepting its consumption.” “It is true that in many countries horse is considered as a pet and its consumption causes some kind of negative feelings. But in essence,

what is the difference between eating a foal or calf?” She added. The report stated that higher levels of omega-3 were found in samples of meat gathered in winter, possibly due to the mountainous location of the pastures they are raised on during summer and autumn. They will conduct further feeding trials to find out how to increase omega-3 levels to ensure an even higher quality of meat.

Stallholders needed by APAH Animal charity APAH is planning its next dog show and needs a little help. The charity hosts two shows every year in an effort to raise some much needed funds to help keep caring for abandoned dogs and cats. This year’s Summer Dog Show will be held in the Carpa Municipal in Pilar de la Horadada on Sunday 9th July. It is a venue that APAH has used before and it is an ideal location. As its undercover organisers don’t have to worry about the weather (although you would hope that July in Spain would be wall-to-wall sunshine), there is plenty of free parking and all the facilities that are needed. However, the charity is now looking for people who would like to have market stalls at the show, which in turn will help bring in more people on the day and create a good atmosphere. To this end the President of APAH has contacted the Costa Blanca People to appeal for help reaching potential stall holders. Anyone interested in having stall should contact APAH directly. They can call the APAH shop in Pilar de la Horadada on 966 766 555, Monday to Saturday 10.00am to 1.30pm for more information on the show and what is required.

Parents of EU children have the right to residency A non-EU parent has a right to stay in EU bloc countries if their child is an EU citizen, a top court has announced, a ruling which could complicate the Brexit talks. The European Court of Justice said that national courts must focus on the welfare of the child and the “risks which separation from the (non-EU parent) might entail for that child's equilibrium.” The European Union insists that the rights of more than three million EU citizens in Britain be among the very first issues that are settled in the Brexit divorce negotiations due to start shortly. One of Britain's main gripes in the leadup to Brexit has been over the role of the European Court of Justice, especially on migration issues. The court was ruling on the case of a Venezuelan woman who entered the Netherlands as a visitor but subsequently had a child with a Dutch national. They moved to Germany but after the relationship failed in 2011, the

woman, identified only by her last name, Chavez-Vilchez, said she became solely responsible for the welfare and upbringing of the child. However, since she did not have a right of residence in the Netherlands, the authorities there rejected her application for social welfare and child benefit payments. In a statement, the Luxembourg-based ECJ said it was up to the Dutch courts to decide whether Chavez-Vilchez had “a derived right of residence”. But if the Dutch court ruled that she did not have this right, then “her situation and that of her child must be examined... in the light of Article 20 of the EU's treaty”. The ECJ said case-law had established that Article 20 “precludes national measures, including decisions refusing a right of residence to the family members of an EU citizen.” If Chavez-Vilchez and other mothers in a similar position were forced to leave,

“that could deprive their children of the genuine enjoyment of the substance of those (EU) rights by compelling those children to leave the territory of the EU.” The ECJ said that even if the EU parent was able and willing to look after the child, that was “not in itself a sufficient ground” to believe the child would not be compelled to leave the bloc if the non-EU parent was barred from residence.

Improvements to Orihuela Costa underway The councillor responsible for coordinated services on the coast, Luisa Boné, has announced that the improvement works financed from the remaining funds will start soon. This week two projects have already begun: the extension of the pedestrian walkway in the street Richard Wagner in Villamartín and renovation work to the southern entrance of La Glea Beach in Campoamor. According to the councillor: “The extension of the pedestrian walkway is necessary because the width of the sidewalk was too narrow for the use of prams, wheelchairs and it led to dangerous situations where pedestrians had to walk on the road to allow other people to pass by. The situation was further aggravated by the narrow lane width of the road, and due to this there have often been dangerous situations where someone could have been run over.” Regarding the renovation work of the southern entrance of the beach La Glea, the councillor explained that the works mainly affect ‘an area adjacent to the restaurant La Barraca, the marina and the restaurant Montepiedra Playa’. This is an area that is used as a parking area and as a driveway for the beach cleaning vehicles, as well as for the trucks that collect and transport the algae. The councillor explained: “The problem is that this area is not organised; cars park there without any consideration and

more frequently block the access for the cleaning vehicles. In addition, during the inspections of the beaches regarding the blue flags, we were asked to put this nonstructured area in order. “And that is why we have decided to improve things here. The renovation work will in principle consist of adequate signposting in the parking area; use of a steel cable to mark the traffic surface; changing the location of the rubbish containers which are currently located in the passage-way area; improving the access route to the beach for the cleaning vehicles and finally to tarmac the area completely.” These two projects are to be financed out of remaining funds. The extension of the pedestrian walkway will cost 19,200 € plus VAT and the renovation work on the beach of La Glea will cost 13.833 € plus VAT and both are expected to be completed within two weeks. Rolling Stones ticket sales crash server in minutes Within minutes of the Rolling Stones’ concert tickets going on sale for the legendary rockers’ Barcelona date, computer servers crashed due to ‘too many users in the queue'. The websites for the promoters, Doctor Music and the main official sales channel, Ticketmaster, began selling seats for the Stones’ show on 27th September in the Catalunya city at 10.00 last Tuesday morning, but by 10.02, fans found they were locked out of the system with an error message. Sources from Doctor Music say the sales process is ‘a bit slower than usual’ because of a new procedure whereby all tickets must carry the full name of the spectator, and nobody is allowed to buy more than eight. This is to prevent the ongoing re-sales

Tough measures for re-offending drivers Reoffending drink and drug-drivers will face compulsory health checks, says interior ministry. Drivers caught over the alcohol limit, on drugs or both more than once in two years will face an automatic ban and compulsory health checks to see whether they suffer addictions, says interior minister Juan Ignacio Zoido. Although this is already provided for by the General Drivers’ Regulations, part of Spain's road traffic law, it is rarely applied. But the ex-mayor of Sevilla, now Head of the Interior, says something needs to be done in light of the high number of cyclist and pedestrian deaths and injuries and of drivers continuing to be found well in excess of the alcohol limit or under the influence of substances, typically cocaine and cannabis. Less than a week after three cyclists from Jávea lost their lives when a drunken and drug-fuelled driver ploughed through them on the N-332 highway in Oliva, a near-identical case was seen in the province of Tarragona – a woman aged 25 who had consumed large amounts of alcohol knocked down six cyclists. Fortunately, in the second case, all of them survived, but several have been injured. And in the four days following the Oliva crash, three drivers were caught in the same province between three and six times over the alcohol limit, one also on drugs and driving the wrong way down the AP-7 motorway.

John via email asks: Hi Aunty. I imagine you get loads of questions about virus protection but please help me out. I purchased a new Acer laptop with windows 10 and it came with a trial version of McAfee antivirus preinstalled. The trial has finished so I tried to install AVG Internet security but it keeps coming up with error messages which I’m guessing is because MacAfee is still installed. Do I need to uninstall Macafe and is AVG the best alternative at the moment? Thanks in advance for all of your help over the years, you have made looking after my computer so much easier. Aunty Says: Thanks John. Yes I have covered this before but I often get asked the same question so no problemo. I still maintain that Windows Defender (the built in free antivirus app that comes bundled with Windows 8 and 10) coupled with the free Malwarebytes will suffice. Remember to do a fortnightly update & scan and you’ll be fine. To uninstall the trial versions of McAfee go to “Settings” “System” “Apps & features” where you should see McAfee in the list. Marcia via email asks: Hello Aunty. I keep getting told by certain friends that they have

The woman who killed the Jávea cyclists, also critically injuring two others, had already been banned from driving three years previously after being caught drunk at the wheel. Zoido says this situation needs to change before more lives are lost, and says re-offenders found to have diagnosable drug or alcohol issues may be obliged to undergo medical treatment and prevented from driving until they are ‘clean’. And if criminal proceedings against them after they cause accidents are dropped, civil proceedings will be conducted instead, to ensure the culprits never get away scot-free. Zoido intends to increase police presence on secondary roads on Saturday and Sunday mornings, when the majority of cycling accidents happen due to partygoers returning home, and wants to see up more drink- and drug-driving checkpoints in these areas at those times. He plans to increase these checkpoints by 100,000 for alcohol and 30,000 for drugs, as well as sending out helicopters to work out which roads are the most heavily-frequented by cyclists, and when.

adverts featuring real-life testimonials by accident victims or their friends and family members and be broadcast on TV and radio before summer. Saturday and Sunday mornings will soon see digital billboards set up warning drivers to watch out for cyclists, and of their obligation to leave at least a five-foot (1.5-metre) gap between their car and the nearest bike. Zoido reminds drivers that they will not be penalised for crossing unbroken white central lines if they have to do so in order to leave a big enough gap for cyclists. He also reiterated that cyclists are allowed to ride two abreast. In 2017 alone, a total of 19 cyclists have been killed on Spain's roads, of whom three were in the Oliva N-332 crash on Sunday, 7th May. According to statistics 43.1 percent of drivers killed in crashes had taken drugs or ‘legal highs’, or had been drinking alcohol, or both, Zoido reveals.

Awareness Full research will be carried out into the main causes and dynamics of cyclist accidents, where and when they happen, and which are the most dangerous roads and times. An awareness campaign will include

definitely 100% sent me emails but I have not received them. I have also sent emails that they say were not received. What could be going on? Can emails simply disappear? Aunty Says: Hi Marcia. Emails can and do disappear between the sender and recipient, and most of the time it is because they have been blocked or dumped by one of the many firewalls or spam checkpoints along the way. I notice you are using an old Spanish @tiscali.es email address which was notoriously iffy, so I suggest changing over to something like Google’s Gmail or Yahoo. Make sure your antivirus and antispyware programs are all up to date and keep your system clean. John via email asks: Hi Aunty. I have always used Ccleaner and have had no problems but recently when I run the Registry Tool I am seeing a lot more things listed that I should remove. I’m not sure if I should delete all of the items found as a lot of them are called MUI files & unused file extensions. Aunty Says: Personally I recommend avoiding any cleanup apps that want to make changes to the Windows registry. The Windows registry is a massively complex delicate database that

stores absolutely everything Windows needs to be able to load and run properly. The MUI files you are finding are harmless and take up very little room so best leave them be. Certainly let Ccleaner clear any temp files if it finds any. Vic from Benidorm asks: I am having problems stopping a Spanish website from popping up every time I go on the Internet, it keeps appearing whatever I am doing and I have to close Chrome to get rid of it. I have also noticed that Chrome has got very slow and has lately started freezing at totally random times. Aunty Says: Hello Vic. From the full description you emailed me it looks like you have some nasty spyware, or possibly a root-kit virus on your computer. Make sure you have an updated copy of MalwareBytes and then do a full scan of your computer. Also check your favorite antivirus program is up to date and do a full scan with that. Email your questions to auntyvirus@costablancapeople.co m and I will see you all next week That’ll do for this week. Email me your problems to auntyvirus@costablancapeople.com

and I will see what I can do.

Do We Have to Wear a Hat? the dashboard. This also occurs in all types of vehicles and seems to increase with the summer months. It is an extremely dangerous practice. It is also illegal. The legs and feet can obscure the driver´s view, but worse than that, in the event of a collision there are two very common injuries, both of which often result in such serious injuries, amputation is common. In the event of a collision, the airbags are normally deployed. If a passenger´s legs are over these airbags they will feel the full force of that deployment, which normally results in fractures to the legs, This week, we received a question from Costa Blanca People reader, John Bevan, from Quesada. John asked, “Is it true that drivers of open top cars must wear some sort of hat to protect them from the intense rays of the sun?” The answer is, according to law, no, you don´t. In fact, there is a chance that wearing a hat would prove dangerous as if it is not worn correctly, the wind could catch it, and blow the hat away and this could then become a potential hazard to other road users, especially the most vulnerable such as cyclists. However, the likelihood of this happening is slim, it is still a potential risk. Of course not talking legally, it does make sense to wear a hat in order to protect yourself from the sun and its damaging rays as you say, but it is not a legal requirement. The question does open up other points for comment, however, regarding open top cars. As much as possible, the manufacturers of these vehicles design them to be as safe as cars with full roofs. They are often fitted with strengthened

supports around the windscreen for example, and roll bars, although these are not often as clearly identifiable as those fitted in rally cars, for example, in commercially available vehicles they are often integral to the structure. So long as we are positioned correctly, sat down, wearing our seatbelt in the correct manner, open top cars are usually perfectly safe. Like all vehicles, It is when we don´t follow the design and safety guidelines when things go wrong. Sometimes, vehicle occupants are seen with their hands held up or out of the cars, on a rare occasion even standing. Only recently, a vehicle was observed driving along the N-332 with the passenger standing up. This was not an open top car but it had a sunroof. We don´t need to be so graphic as to describe the likely outcome if that vehicle was involved in a collision of some form. You must keep your extremities, arms, legs etc., well within the confines of the vehicle for the roll bars to provide protection. On the subject of legs, it is an increasingly common sight to see passengers with their legs up and feet on

sometimes pelvic damage. If airbags do not deploy it is easy for the body to be thrown forward, underneath the seatbelt, an action known as submarining. This forces the body, feet first, like a torpedo through the windscreen, resulting in severe lacerations, often accompanied by fractures. The only safe way to sit in any vehicle is within the design of the seat, with seatbelt securely fastened. You can read more about this on the n332.es website where we have a number of articles explaining in more detail. Mark Nolan

REAL MADRID TAKE THE TITLE

With Apologies to the National under17 side, which took the European championship, and Atletico Madrid’s ladies, who won their league, there was only one story in Spanish football at the weekend. After Real Madrid had seen off Celta in their rearranged midweek game, they only needed a point from their away match with Málaga, ironically trained by ex-Madrid star Michel, whatever the result at Barcelona. In the event Barça made heavy weather of beating Eibar, and were two down deep into the second half. After drawing level, Messi missed a penalty, but the referee invented another one after a blatant Neymar dive, and Messi gave the Catalans a 3-2 win. Down in Málaga, Cristiano Ronaldo latched onto a great through ball from Isco after only two minutes to put the whites ahead, but they were way below their best, and surrendered possession far too often to the home side. Midway through the second half, though, a corner brought a rebound from ‘keeper Kameni and Benzema made it 0-2 to give the Madrid side the title with three points the margin. Malcolm Palmer .

Competition heats up in Línea Directa Spanish Nationals The first week of this years’ Nationals is already over. After the opening ceremony play got underway with the Mixed Triples where some favoured teams didn’t make it through. However, the defending champions, Grace, Robert & Graham Cathcart (Teide - Tenerife) are still there and will meet the San Miguel trio of Brian Allen, Brian and Lin Miller in the quarter final. In the other 1/4’s Noel Davis, Gail &

Fred Willshire (San Miguel) will play Jan and Brian Pocock & Suzi Cooper (San Luis), while Peta Rhodes, Peter Morgan and Fred Roberts (Quesada) will play Mel and Colin Highland and Colin Lindgren (Emerald Isle). In the last of the 1/4 finals, which will all take place at Quesada Bowls club on Tuesday afternoon, Debbie Colquhoun, Graham Marlow & Jenny Thompson (Indalo) will play Kevin McKenna, Deidre Leeming and Barry Armstrong (Quesada). It was then onto the Ladies pairs

RBL VISITS THE EMERALD ISLE BOWLS CLUB A dozen or more members of the Orihuela Costa Branch of The Royal British Legion were guests of the Emerald Isle Bowls Club last week where they enjoyed a morning of instruction with varying degrees of success. But to a man, and a woman, they all agreed it had been a very enjoyable experience, despite the occasional long trek, as they were occasionally required to chase after their bowls that had been despatched with the wrong bias. The session had been arranged by Mel O’Dell who was joined by EI members Frank King, Ernie Bennett and Joe Dear in providing the tuition. Joe can also be seen presenting the bottle of wine to winners Tam and Margaret Campbell. On the following night, after the regular monthly gathering, members were very well entertained by the Terri Horvath Morris Dancers who are based in Campoverde but dance at many local charitable events and Fiestas. They were at the branch where Sue Walters gave a short presentation on the history of the 15th century English Folk Dance before the team performed three regional dances from their repertoire. Of course the display didn’t end there as Sue then coerced a dozen or so branch members to take to the floor with varying degrees of accomplishment. Whilst the chairman and branch secretary took on this new skill with great success there were other members who

were having obvious difficulties in learning the footwork. Despite his advancing years, Mo Davin, however, was so taken with the activity that he is now considering joining the troupe. I’m sure that seeing him skipping across the floor with bells around his ankles would be reason enough to have them back at the RBL in the future. It was a thoroughly professional display by the dancers which was very much enjoyed by all. On a more serious note the Terri Horvath Morris team are currently looking to recruit new members and are holding a series of workshops which anybody with an interest is welcome to attend, either to watch or to dance, with or without prior experience. This would also apply to any musicians who might have an interest in playing for the Morris team. The workshops are being held every Friday through June at Las Filipinas Social Centre from 1-3pm. where last years losing finalists, Peta Rhodes and Carol Broomfield (Quesada) in the ladies event battled their way through to meet Val Collier and Ann Eagle (San Miguel) in the first of the semis with Gail Willshire and Lynn Greenland (San Miguel) contesting the second semi final against Gill Atkinson and Jan Dando (Indalo). In the Mens pairs Paul Parkes, one of last years champions playing with new partner Pat Heaney (Emerald Isle) will take on Chris Brazier and Graham Phillips (Quesada) in one semi while the father and son team of Gary and Johnny Raby (San Miguel) will play Drew Gerrard and Colin Highland (Emerald Isle). The ultimate contests of the first week’s play were the Premier events of the Ladies and Mens singles. Both had some real nailbiters in the early rounds which kept the spectators on the edge of their seats. The two finalists from the 2016 Ladies Singles are both out with the semis to be contested by Nina McKenzie (Mazarron) against Carol Broomfield (Quesada) and with an all Quesada semi of Peta Rhodes against Jacqui Johnston, Quesada are guaranteed at least one finalist. In the Mens event, last years champion Martin Foulcer (Vistabella) is still in with a good chance of retaining his title, something that has only been achieved in previous years by Keith Jones (twice) and Pete Bonsor. He will

play Brian Robertson (Mazarron) in one semi final, while the other match will feature National Team Manager Graham Cathcart (Teide-Tenerife) against John Rimmer (Country Bowls). As the tournament now moves north from Greenlands to Quesada Bowls Club,

Before that, however, Nursing Staff from Quirónsalud Hospital will be on hand to carry out free blood pressure checks at Quesada Bowls Club on Friday May 26th, from 10:00 a.m. to 13:00 p.m., a problem that affects four out of ten men and three out of ten women in the

and as we enter the latter stages of the competition, players can now see themselves within sight of a prestigious National title but with many twists and turns yet to come there is still plenty to play for in the 2017 Championships. So as play continues at Quesada, where the schedule for the latter stages will be released early this week, what we do know is the finals will be played on Saturday with the presentations toward the end of that afternoon.

Valencian Community. They will also remain for much of the afternoon where they will also be providing information on the prevention of injuries. Checks and advice are absolutely free and are available whether you bowl or not so why not take advantage and go along. Next week at this time it will all be over for yet another year. Wonder who will be celebrating.

Blarneystone Golf The Member’s Golf Society - Marie Finn Society Trophy 32 of us travelled to Roda for the second playing of the Marie Finn Trophy. The course was in great condition and the weather great until the wind picked up on the back nine. There were a few very tired golfers handing their cards in at the end of the day but a few "refreshments" back at the Blarneystone resolved that. Thank you, as always, to Gill and Georgia for the food. We welcomed Matt Finn and his daughters Suzanne and Fiona who had flown over from Ireland to support the event. There were several extra NTP prizes but with a maximum of two wins per player several of these were given out as spot prizes meaning even those with lower scores went home with something. NTP 3 - Barry Monan NTP 7 - Myra Coull NTP in 2 hole 8 - John Dynes NTP in 2 hole 12 - Brendan Mooney NTP in 3 hole 18 - Barry Monan Longest drive - Terry Jones Best front 9 - Dave Adams Best back 9 - Tony Brain Best Guest - Barry Monan 3rd - Tony Jones 28pts 2nd - Gary Lester 30pts 1st - John Dynes 31pts Our next match is on Thursday 15th June at Alenda, guests welcome. Please add your name to the list at the Blarneystone.

After a small mess up with the tee times by our Secretary 33 members and guests finally teed off in what must be said was quite a strong wind. It was thought that the scoring would be low in our Stableford competition; in fact the average score was well into the low 30’s. we did have a couple of birthdays to celebrate, visitor T. Sharpe and eccentric member Vernon Brown, who it must be said had a lot of luck on his birthday by holing his 3rd shot on hole 9 from a full 50 meters and of course for our Norwegian members it was their constitution day and one can only imagine the condition of some of our members after the evenings events. The course was, as always in good condition with the greens being a little faster than usual, causing one or two annoying three putts! Tales from the Top Flight chris@costablancapeople.com

yes, it’s time to call on Per. Pedro and Hazard are already licking their lips. Mind you, they got some practice in playing against Lescott.

So it’s all over. There was very little on the line in the final round of Premier League matches, so the players pretty much played like that. To be fair, there’s very little on the line for us either, so we’ll write today’s column with a similar level of enthusiasm.

Before I leave Arsenal alone, how “Arsenal” was the worldy that Ramsey scored in injury time? No, that is not a compliment. A beautiful goal when it mattered not. When it really matters? Not a bean. That is why Arsenal miss out on the Champions League for the first time since John Terry happened.

■ CHRIS DARWEN

With 40 minutes or so on the clock, Arsene Wenger leaned over to Steve Bould and probably whispered something like, “done it again Bouldy. Top four, and we’re going to do it with ten men. Fancy another five years of this?” You could certainly see it happening, the Gunners led 2-0 and Liverpool were being all Liverpool and struggling to break down. As Garth Crooks had wisely observed, news had indeed filtered through to Anfield and the crowd very much knew the score. Of course they did Garth, this 2017, not 1977. The speed of mobile 4G nowadays, they probably knew Sanchez had scored a second before the ball crossed the line. Still, they needn’t have worried. Kloppo has expressed his wish for everyone at the club to be screaming “YESSSSS” with some words beginning with F - his words, not mine readers, so don’t judge me - and his wish was granted. Liverpool achieved that final place in the top four, Arsenal starting their late dash for the line a little bit too late. Never mind Arsene, I am sure an FA Cup runners up medal will soften the blow next week, no? Arsenal may have to continue their three at the back routine as both Koscielny and Gabriel managed to rule themselves out. Oh

There was a chance that Manchester City might have finished in 4th if things had gone against them. That was until Watford’s departing manager, Walter Mazzarri, decided to play the age old end-of-season Sunday league kickabout game of pulling the team out of the hat. It worked as well at in normally does on Hackney Marshes and City strolled to a 5-0 win. Mazzarri would have been better off naming his two substitute goalkeepers in the starting eleven. Winning the golden boot counts as a trophy right? Then surely we can stop calling Spurs bottlers after all. Harry Kane netted yet another hat-trick against a Hull side who clearly wanted to be anywhere other than one on one with a rampant Kane. They could have had two trophies, if they hadn’t comically conceded the goal that ruled out Hugo’s chance of a golden glove. Everyone assumes that Chelsea planned to take John Terry off after 26 minutes. I am not so sure, it didn’t look too choreographed to me. I think it was more down to the fact that Chelsea conceded to Sunderland. Yes, Sunderland. I thought we’d heard the last of them. Moyes claimed that his side

agreed to put the ball out of play after 26 minutes to allow JT his send off. Just to be on the safe side Sunderland put it out of play in the 20th, 21st, twice in the 22nd, 23rd, 24th and three times in the 25th minute as well. Just to be sure, honest. Not because of their inability to pass the ball to anyone in the same colour shirt with any kind of frequency. Incredibly, Chelsea improved after the leader and legend departed and they wrapped up their league season with another win, becoming the first side to win 30 Premier League games in a season. I felt for Conte at the end of the match, that’s another nice suit ruined by champagne. If he wins the double next week it will have been an expensive season for him, but a great season for his tailor. Who says Jose doesn’t focus on youth development, eh? United picked their youngest ever Premier League side against Palace and dominated them. Young Josh Harrop scored the goal that he will look back on in five years, watching through bitter eyes, thinking “I could have been someone, and now I play for Preston”. I feel like now is the time to review United post Fergie. They finish 5th, so sack Moyes. Since then they’ve had and sacked Louis van Gaal, bought the Bundesliga player of the year, signed the most expensive player ever and made Jose the highest paid manager in the world, again. Net result? 6th. Bravo Mr Woodward, bravo. How do you become one of the biggest teams in the world? Start by being the biggest team in the world and have Ed Woodward run your company for a few years. Shakespeare’s final act as Leicester manager (probably) was a 1-1 draw with Bournemouth, Jamie Vardy scoring

another goal. Burnley played like a team that actually cared about the fact that another £11m was on the table if they beat West Ham. As soon as Gold and Sullivan heard that there was some extra cash available they ordered the Hammers to actually turn up, and they did, stealing a 2-1 win. WBA lost 2-1 to Swansea, and a defender scored their goal so I will let you all work out how they scored that. Peter Crouch scored a goal legally this week, the winner against one of his many old clubs, Southampton. So folks, that is it for the 2016/17 Premier League season. I don’t think we ever hit the heights of the season before, but it’s had it’s moments. Joey Barton getting banned, Claudio getting canned, Arsene getting panned. Sure, we have a few loose ends to tie up in the next week or so but never forget this as the season where three at the back returned to the top flight, thanks to Wenger (if you believe him).

Joey Barton banned

Cobras hold heads up San Miguel Golf Society EUROGOLF high at tournament Costa Cobras RFC entered their first every tournament at the Alan Davies memorial 7’s in Elche on Saturday and had a baptism of fire playing against U20’s international players in one game. They saw the harsh realities of the game. Even in the last game when they broke free racing to the try line everyone was cheering them on from all the teams willing them to score, that is the impression they made. They can be very proud of the way they played and hold their heads up high, special when you think that over half the team had never played rugby before this year. They were so buoyant after the tournament that they were rearing to go for the next one over in Murcia on 10 June and then in San Juan’s beach 7’s in August. Onwards and upwards with the team. You can still buy a club lottery card, 10€ each for the Euro Millions, the card is valid till May 2018, 2 draws per week, the cost of the card is split between the club and

Alzhiemers charity. If you would like to come and join us we train at the football ground in San Fulgencio every Monday and Wednesday from 20.30-22.00. Everybody is welcome, from beginners to experienced players, the more the merrier. Why not come along and join the fun with the newest rugby club on the Costa Blanca. For more information about our club, or the lottery cards, call or Whatsapp Dutch on 692 767 242 or find us on Facebook - S.F. Costa Cobras RFC. Dutch is also at Zoco market on Sundays from 09.00-13.30 selling all of your rugby branded clothing and gear including Canterbury casuals, Cotton Traders, club and international shirts. He also has our club shirt on sale, so get your orders in now! Finally, a big thank you to all of our local sponsors; the Power Pub in San Fulgencio, Legal and Tax in Spain, Autocenter Rojales and Active Surfaces and San Fulgencio town hall for all of their continued support with the club.

SMGS’s final game before a large contingent make their way to Granada for an away weekend, saw 32 members and 4 guests turn up at the somewhat out-ofthe-way course of Hacienda de Riquelme. The course was in a reasonable state, with fairways leaving room for doubt about whether the winter rules approach should have been continued, but greens were in excellent condition, if a little on the slow side. Scoring is never great from society members here, there is, however, always one stand out score, this time coming from Ivor Turkington, who was a “mere” 5 points ahead of the rest of the field with an impressive 39. The day’s competition results, by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 5th Chris Hamblett (27), 4th Ron Stenhouse (28), 3rd Grattan Forber (29), 2nd Mike Jordan (30), and 1st Norman McBride with 31 points. Silver Category: 5th Norman Cahill (28

on CB), 4th Ken Flaherty (31), 3rd Theo Boelhouwer (32), 2nd Phil de Lacy (33) and 1st, Brian Mulligan with 34 points. Gold Category: 5th John Aitchison (31 on CB), 4th Mike Freeman (32), 3rd Steve Higgins (34 on CB), 2nd Barry Roehrig (34 on CB), and 1st, with a superb score of 39 points, Ivor Turkington. The Abacus was won by Alan MacDonald. Nearest the pins on the par 3’s (open to all) went to Eva Pettersson (5), Mike Freeman (7), Phil de Lacy (15) and Alan MacDonald (17). The Best Guest was John Humphreys with 29 points. Keep up to date with all SMGS matters by logging on to our website www.smgs.org or simply give Theo Boelhouwer a call on 694494824 to find out more about the society and its weekly golf get-togethers. Play off update The football season is far from over in Spain and here is the latest updates on teams in the local area and how they are faring in the promotion play off programme. First off, we know that CD Torrevieja lost their division three status and will be playing in the Preferente Group 4 come September, along with also relegated Almoradi. The three teams seeking to gain promotion to group six from the Preferente will be Villajoyosa, La Nucia and Thader. Some of the teams that Torry will encounter next term will be Albatera, Callosa, Benferri, and old adversaries, Jove Espanol. The group six quartet started their quest for promotion to 2B, with champions Olimpic making the most of home advantage to beat CF Talavera de la Reina 1-0. Olimpic won group six by 7 points from Alzira, whilst Talavera won their group (18) by 8 points. The return leg this Sunday might prove to be a corker, as Talavera's final league home game ended 5-5! Alzira played away in the first leg of their initial playoff game in the island of Ibiza against Ramiro's team SCR Pena Deportiva who had finished 4th in their

group. Alzira took the lead in the 54th minute through Gomis, but the islanders equalised on 81 minutes, then rammed home a winner in time added on. With the away goal, however, under their belts, Alzira only need a 1-0 victory to progress to the semi finals. Third placed Ontinyent had home advantage versus Terrassa Olimpica 2010, but went a goal down just before half time. They kept their heads and found the equaliser from the penalty spot with 13 minutes left on the clock, Domenech coolly converting. The group 5 outfit last tasted defeat at home in February, so Ontinyent will have their work cut out to make it through. Castellon finished fourth in the group and they entertained another Baleraric side, Poblense, who had been runners up in group 11. This game produced no goals, so one goal will be enough to win it in Ibiza this coming weekend. Keep up to date in your Costa Blanca People with all the play off matches and the eventual composition of group six in the third division, as well as the other sides Torry will face in group 4 of the Preferente league once those playoff games have concluded. ABBEY ANGLING

We fished the 10th and final round of the Spring Series at the Embalsa de Pedrera on the 16th May. Having taken readings off the ladder by the tower, the water has been holding steady during the last month, hopefully it will drop down a couple of feet now that summer is here and the farmers and holiday makers are using more water. Unfortunately the strong winds are still with us in the afternoon making it seem like we are fishing in the sea. Weights are improving now that more food is going in on a regular basis, Wales won the day coming out tops with Doug Hornblow in 1st place and Alan Davis taking the 2nd spot 1st Doug Hornblow with 27.860kgs fishing the feeder using pellet 2nd Alan Davis with 24.100kgs fishing the feeder using pellet 3rd Terry Screen with 16.100kgs fishing the pole and monkey using hemp and tares The winners of the Spring Series

RODS & REELS

We also fished the Embalsa de Argos for the 4th round of the Spring Series on the 10th May. Again it was a lovely day, until around 2pm when the wind got up with a vengeance. Bill the master Reade reversing the role from the day before to take the top spot with over 61kgs, placing Doug Hornblow into the 2nd position, and the overall weights were on par from yesterdays match 1st Bill Reade with 61.220kgs fishing the pole using paste 2nd Doug Hornblow with 41.940kgs fishing the pole using paste 3rd Dave Hoare with 40.480kgs fishing the pellet up in the water There are still some vacancies at the Club and if anyone is interested in joining please contact Bill Reade on 966790416 We combined

these two matches into a Mini Fishing festival, as most of us stayed overnight to save travelling to Argos both days. Our thanks go to Doug Hornblow who supplied two Diawa twin hard case holdalls which each hold two assembled feeder rods as prizes for the overall top two weights from both days. Although the outright winner was Doug he declined his prize as he had donated them. So the winners were FIRST Bill Reade with a total weight for both days of 103.88kgs SECOND Terry Screen with a total weight for both days of 78.68kgs The total amount of fish caught in the two days was 601.20kgs which works out for each day to 25kgs per angler, and a good couple of days fishing had by all TIGHT LINES Terry Screen
