ATTACK AT ROJALES FIESTAS LEAVES YOUNG MAN IN COMA A young man has been left in a life threatening condition after an unprovoked attack during this weekend’s Moors and Christians celebrations in Rojales.

The victim, aged 28, was admitted to Alicante General Hospital after the assault which happened in the early hours of Saturday morning. The incident occurred among the town’s famous of the Moors and Christians parades, in one of the ‘kabilas’ or parade lines. Local

sources say that without any warning, an ‘athletic looking’man approached the victim from behind and karate kicked him in the back. The victim, who has been in a coma since Saturday morning, is said to be from nearby San Fulgencio and had travelled to Rojales to enjoy the famous Moors and

Christians fiestas, a colourful re-enactment event. Eyewitnesses told police that a man kicked the victim in the back with no warning and immediately fled the scene on foot. The victim appeared to immediately lose consciousness and fell to the ground when it is believed he hit his head. He was attended to by security personnel at the scene until the arrival of an ambulance. Doctors at Torrevieja hospital made the decision to move him to Alicante General Hospital due to the serious nature of his injuries. Sources say that the man’s life is hanging in the balance; such is the gravity of the situation. Witnesses to the incident insisted to police that there was no previous fight or discussion between the victim and the assailant. Guardia Civil have launched an investigation to track down the man responsible.

The man was rushed to Alicante General Hospital due to the seriousness of his injuries

BITE SIZE Taking care of the cats NEWS: Last Saturday eleven charities put up their stalls in La Mata to draw attention to the good work they do and torecruitmore volunteers. This is now a regular event organised by Councillor Carmen Morate to help establish links between the large number of charities that exist in the town. It was a very hot afternoon and those taking part felt the heat in the early part of the event which ran from 6pm until 9pm. However, it continues to be a good way of keeping people informed of what help there is out there. Councillor Morate is also keen to ensure that charities are sharing resources and helping each other out where possible.

Use of animals in events The town hall of Torrevieja is opposed to the use of animals as exhibitions in public events that are subsidised by the town council. The latest event to be affected by this is the pilgrimage of the Virgen del Rocío. The town hall called for an end to the traditional kneeling of the oxen before the image of the Virgin when the procession leaves the Inmaculada church. Although this procession made this amendment to the ceremony two horses were still included in the procession. The town council is not happy about this, which they say breaks the terms and conditions of the celebration this year. The council do not Continued on page 5

in there at the moment that we are hoping to find homes for,’ explains Councillor Morate. ‘We rely on people taking them in so that we can admit more. They are all sterilised and vaccinated.’ It’s not just homing cats that the town hall is involved with. They have also been busy recently rescuing them. ‘I’m not sure if it’s the hot weather,’ says Carmen, ‘but we suddenly have had several cats who have got stuck in pipes. You can hear them but it can be very difficult to release them without digging up the ground.’ It seems a councillor’s work is never done. When not co-ordinating their rescue Councillor Morate is at the shelter herself at the weekend. Staffing the shelter is still a problem and they very much rely on the volunteers who help out, sometimes including the councillor herself. Suzanne O’Connell

The campaign to sterilise stray cats in the town has been making a difference. Councillor Carmen Morate knows that it is a long term project that requires perseverance. However, it does seem to be paying off now with some reduction in the colonies of cats. The town hall is now waiting for their share of the grant to come from the Valencian community. Altogether there is €200,000 allocated to a cat sterilisation programme and Torrevieja will get a share of this. The difficulty is that just as the number of kittens is reducing, a colony can suddenly be increased again if another cat is abandoned by its owner. This is a common problem and an influx of abandoned domestic cats makes it difficult to monitor and control. Where they are able, domestic cats are taken into the animal shelter in the hope that someone will adopt them. ‘We have around 20 domesticated cats

BITE SIZE Reducing congestion NEWS: this summer Continued from page 3 want animals involved that are forced to behave in ways that are unnatural to them. Those organising the event expressed their confusion at the ban claiming that all animals are treated correctly and that they do not suffer.

Water consumption increase in Torrevieja The consumption of water has increased by 11% this year as can be seen from the increase in the amount of water being treated. Agamed have reported that altogether 2,324,883 cubic metres of water was received for treatment during January, February, March, April and May 2017which is an 11.2% increase on the previous year. It is also claimed that water purification has improved with better water being available after purification. Agamed’s report indicates further investment with €120,614 being allocated to the supply and €71,268 to the sanitation network. Sewage pipes are to be replaced on Moriones Street from Maestro Francisco Casanovas Street to Diego Ramírez pastor Avenue.

Mental health day recognised in Torrevieja On the 30th June the mayor of Torrevieja, José Manuel Dolón, inaugurated the 8th Conference of the Mental Health Federation of the Valencian community. The day is organised by ADIEM and took place in the Virgen Del Carmen cultural centre. The mayor expressed his wish that the quality of care is improved and that mental health difficulties, which will affect a high proportion of the population, are recognised and acknowledged. ‘People with mental health difficulties,’ said the mayor, ‘should be able to lead a normal life in the workplace, with relationships and at all levels.’ The conference focused on the need to put the patient at the centre of the process and continued with a number of round table discussions.

Town hall publishes small contract details In a bid to increase transparency, local councillors are publishing on the Torrevieja website details of 127 small contracts they have awarded during the past two years of their administration. They are not required to publish details of contracts worth less than €18,000. Overall the small contracts add up to more than two million euros. Placing smaller contracts on the town hall webpage could also serve the function of enabling others to bid. It should also prevent the practice of Continued on page 6

The roads around the centre of Torrevieja are already congested and this is before the influx of holidaymakers during July and August. In an attempt to keep the flow of traffic running smoothly the town hall has made some changes. From the new roundabout on the front opposite the casino, the traffic must now enter towards the port car park only. The exit from the car park is now solely by the dique towards the Marina Salinas. It is hoped that this one way system will make the passage of traffic much smoother. Police officers will also be placed at the pedestrian crossings to help regulate the traffic entering and leaving the port at key times. The traffic lights which allow the entry and exit of traffic to the front, will be more carefully regulated so that the intervals when they are at green are longer. There may be some confusion with the changes initially and the mayor asks

for patience amongst drivers whilst people become familiar with the new procedures. The mayor is keen to emphasise that these changes are on a trial basis and he would welcome any further suggestions for how the summer traffic could be helped to flow more smoothly. Suzanne O’Connell

25th anniversary of Habaneras night This year La noche de Habaneras took place on the Paseo Vista Alegre, which was the original setting for this event 63 years ago. The show, performed on 30th June, lasted almost two hours and was presented by the journalist Marga Torregrosa for the second year running. Singers from Torrevieja, Brea y Sal, began the evening. This group consists of 12 male voices whose traditional songs include ‘La paloma’, ‘La

dulce habanera’ and ‘Rosita de un verde palmar’. It wasn’t all traditional habaneras, however. Later in the evening there was also the innovative versions composed by Pipo Prendes. The evening has always been a very popular one and this year was no exception. It is the prelude to the Habaneras competition itself which takes place from the 17th to the 23rd July this year on the Eras de la Sal. Suzanne O’Connell

City of salt is short of salt Torrevieja, the city of salt, is a little low on its main product at the moment. Following the torrential rains during the winter, the salt works is having to import 31,000 tonnes of salt from other Salins Group farms inTunisia and Ibiza. The cargo ship ‘Forester’, with its German flag arrived in Torrevieja’s port this week in order to unload more than 6,000 tonnes of salt from Tunisia. The storms and rain of last winter have led to this unheard of situation. It seems unbelievable that one of the largest salt production businesses in Europe has had to resort to importing the product. This action has been taken in order to fulfil the orders it has promised to clients. The parent company, GrupoSalins, is feeling the pinch following the extra rain in December, February and March which has left the salt works in Torrevieja down on production. As a result they have had to resort to other means, including that of importing the salt from a number of locations including Europe and Africa. Once the salt is unloaded it is moved by lorries that can carry 20 tonnes each. A

limit that means they have been backwards and forwards between the port and the salt works in order to transport the salt that has been landed there. It is rather ironic that the salt is being landed on the same dique that usually sees it travelling in the opposite direction, away from the port and across the world. Five boats of the Salins Ibérica line have transported salt from Ibiza. Most of the salt is for consumption. Of the 600,000 tonnes of salt that is usually produced by Torrevieja, only 100,000 tonnes of it is usually used in this way. The cargos of salt started to arrive in May, with the first one coming from Tunisia. This was the first time in thirty years that such an event has occurred but the salt company is determined that the bad weather should not impact upon the salt trade that has been captured over many years. It’s the influx of freshwater, diluting the salt water that has created the shortage. The results are not only being felt now but will continue to have an impact at the beginning of next season too. Independence BITE SIZE NEWS: for La Mata Continued on page 6

splitting works that are part of a larger contract in order to avoid more timeconsuming procedures.

Hispanic days in Torrevieja

No matter how large or small the town, region or country, there always seems to be someone who wants to break away and create their own. In the case of Torrevieja, it is the area of La Mata which would like to be independent of its neighbour. At the moment La Mata is part of the jurisdiction of Torrevieja but they have always hankered after being independent and making their own local decisions. However, the local government has now voted along with the Sueña party to allow reconsideration of the status of La Mata. This meant that the motion was passed with a very small majority as the Ciudadanos party abstained and the PP voted against the proposal. The request for independence is spearheaded by the group la Plataforma Independiente Matera. Their request would mean that La Mata would have its own budget and could make its own spending decisions. The PP oppose the proposal on the basis that they do not

believe the area constitutes a distinct and different place. It was the case that 70 years ago La Mata was separate from Torrevieja with there being six kilometres of dunes in between the two towns. However, with all the coastal building that has taken place there is now no division and, it is claimed, that the two run seamlessly into one another. Legislation rules that it is not possible for two towns to be separate if there is no land unoccupied between them. However, the government team in Torrevieja has agreed to look into the issue and this means that government technicians will be given the task of inspecting whether the severance could take place from a legal point of view. Criticism was made after the debate of the abstention of the Ciudadanos councillors. During the debate they appeared to be ready to vote against the inquiry, only abstaining at the last minutes. Suzanne O’Connell

From the 10th to the 16th July there will be a Spain/ Cuba fusion event bringing together the best of both cultures. A number of activities are planned including live music, art exhibitions and Cuban films on show. There will be a dominoes competition and workshops for both children and parents. The complete programme can be seen on the Facebook page www.facebook.com/jornadasdeidayvuelta You can reserve places in the workshops and sign up for the competitions by visiting the Casino de Torrevieja or on Whatsapp at 687 620 973.

Resolving the problems at CEIP Inmaculada The primary school Inmaculada is in a state of disrepair and parents and their associations have been complaining about it now for some time. In a bid to find solutions, the councillor for education, José Hurtado visited the school on the 27th June. The school is the oldest one in Torrevieja and Councillor Hurtado wanted to see what the next stage in its improvement plan might be. The councillor was accompanied by representatives from AMPA (parent/ teacher association) and the headteacher. The school has suffered from being patched up for a while and temporary remedial work is not proving to be a long term solution. One of the problems that the school faces is intruders when it is closed. The school has been particularly vulnerable at weekends and there is a move to ensure that police can gain access to investigate if a break in is suspected. A possible solution to this is raising the height of the perimeter wall. It is hoped that the councillor’s visit will begin the process of making the school a better learning environment for the children. Suzanne O’Connell

Time to clean up theTorretas Residents of the Torretas urbanisations in Torrevieja continue to campaign for more attention to be given to their environment. Altogether around 30 letters have been presented to the town hall calling for something to be done to address the condition of the estates. In the latest plea, Councillor Sandra Sánchez has drawn attention to the Green Party’s support for action to be taken prior to the local elections in 2015. A meeting held between the Green party and representatives from the Torretas 12 days before the elections had identified a number of the problems this older part of the town faces. Infestations, transport difficulties, abandoned green areas, failing public lighting and

lack of a police presence were all identified as issues to be tackled. Since then, 18 letters have been presented to the department for parks and gardens in order to ask for lighting repairs, repair of roads and electricity boxes, cleaning up and clearing of rubbish which all represent a risk of fire. Requests have been made for the improvement and maintenance of green areas, the removal of decaying and fallen trees and the installation of a bus stop. Four letters have been presented to the Health department. Particular concerns include infestations of rats, cockroaches and mosquitos. Neighbours have denounced the presence of dangerous dogs,

abandoned animals and the need for pest control to rid the urbanisation of insects and rodents. In addition 11 letters have been presented asking for meetings with the mayor to convey concerns about security, dirty streets, squatting and many more problems that residents are campaigning to have addressed. Residents want the council to find solutions as soon as possible. They recognise that the area remained neglected during the administration of the PP but now feel that the Green Party, who showed their support prior to the election, should demonstrate their support through action now too. Shower with a difference On the 29th June, Councillor for beaches, Javier Manzanares presented a new shower for those with disabilities. The

innovative design means that the shower can be used by those confined to a wheelchair and will be available as part of

the assistance services on Torrevieja’s Los Náufragos beach. The shower has been designed by Recreativos Acuáticos Horadada who have chosen Torrevieja to trial the prototype. ‘This is unique in the Valencian Community,’ explained Councillor Manzanares. ‘We would like to see these on other beaches too. We want our beaches to be friendly for those with mobility difficulties. We have been working for more than a year and a half to adapt our beaches. Our target is that this is completed by next summer.’ Victor González, representative of Recreativos Acuáticos Horadada explained that this shower has been created by his business in collaboration with town hall technicians. It has cost €30,000 to design and create and each one now comes at a cost of €5,000. ‘Torrevieja is the pioneer here,’ explains Victor. ‘We hope to roll the idea out across Spain but, at the moment, it’s Torrevieja who are leading the field.’ From the 1st July services will be available on Torrevieja’s beaches to assist those with disabilities. Anyone needing this service should call 647599624 so that they can be collected and taken to one of

Coordinating security on the coast The subject of security on beaches and in coastal areas across four different municipalities was addressed at a meeting in Pilar de la Horadada Town Hall recently. It was attended by councillors and Local Police chiefs from Pilar, Orihuela, Torrevieja and San Pedro del Pinatar. Pilar Councillor José Tomás Saura said they had got together to try to increase security by “joining forces so that tourists can enjoy themselves and relax on our beaches”. Bothe the Local Police chiefs and the local Commander of the Guardia Civil said they intend to coordinate and exchange information between them in order to deter all kinds of criminal activity. There will also be a daily police presence on the beaches as a preventative measure. Finally the Town Halls discussed publishing a joint information leaflet so that residents and tourists know what to do in case of an emergency.

While there a training session was set up for her with Arsenal Girls Academy and following a successful trial Annabell was offered a provisional place. However, Manchester City has a fantastic academy, a great reputation in women’s football and have continuously inject money into the sport. So, following some dedicated research and enquiring by Mom Donna, the Director of Football in Manchester was contacted and a trial was arranged. The trials were extremely tough; with three knockout stages held and a selection trial. However as Annabel lives here, it was decided she could attend the second trial and if successful the selection trial. Her first trial consisted of 100 girls split into small groups and worked over nine technical stations. They tested passing techniques, strength, vision of the game, accuracy of passing and also the dreaded‘bleep test’. The trial lasted two hours at the indoor stadium. After a nail-biting wait over night Annabell was told the next day that she had passed the trial. The selection trial was a football match where 30 girls showcased their match-play skills and the coaches were able to see their true abilities. There were 850 girls who tried out, all battling for just 15 places in the squad – and through sheer skill and

determination Annabell was offered a place in the U16 Girls by Academy Manager Kevin Murphy. Founded in 1988 the Manchester City Women’s team was created after a formal proposal was made to Manchester City’s club secretary Bernard Halford. In April 2013 the club achieved entry into the FA Women’s

based in Orihuela, the team that has just won the FFCV Cadete League Division 2. When asked how she feels about the news Annabell said: “On one side I am really happy and excited about my future but on the other side I am sad because my life is here in Spain, but I am leaving it for a good cause and great opportunity.”

Super League and has regularly collected top trophies ever since. In 2016 the Blues clinched a first league title with an unbeaten record.

Dedication Annabell began playing football for Junior Strikers at the age of 7 years old and there she was able to develop her individual skills and strengths whilst competing with boys in a local league. She tested out different positions including goalkeeper before settling into Centre Midfield which is where she plays for her current team CFF Uryula

Looking to the future Annabell would like to follow in the footsteps of her Chelsea heroes Cesc Fabregas and Frank Lampard by securing a career in football and playing for her country. In support of her amazing achievement her Mom, sister Ronni and brother Sonny are all leaving Spain and heading for the UK in August so it will be an emotional move for the whole family. Any girls wanting to join CFF Uryula can contact Tania 620475055 (Spanish) or Donna on 603392148. Mireille Toddington

Movístar forced to retract 3,900 euro bill Mobile phone giant Movístar has agreed to waive a €3,900 bill it slapped on a customer for roaming charges in Serbia – a country she has never been to in her life. The affected consumer had taken out a contract back in 2015 which allowed her to use the internet on her mobile phone in Europe at set preferential rates – a package called Tarifa Internet Viaje Europa ('Europe Travel Internet Tariff') – costing €2.50 per 50 megabytes of download.

This was just before the customer, Dolores P. R., went on a cruise in August two years ago. Movístar did not, as it is required to do by law, warn her that her megabyte download limit was about to expire and, when she got home from the cruise, found a bill for €3,896. However, the bill mentioned internet use in Serbia, a country Dolores had not been to on the cruise – nor at any other time in her life. She turned to the consumer organisation FACUA, which liaised with the

Regional Consumer Institute in Dolores’ area, Galicia. The Institute upheld her claim and ordered Movístar to reduce the bill to a much more affordable €68.61, and for any credit-rating or asset-related issues affecting her as a result of the non-payment of the €3,896 to be eradicated immediately. Its verdict is fully binding, which means that Dolores’ 18-month headache has finally lifted as Movístar is no longer able to pressure her for payment of the money.

Celebrity charity golf day

A

round 50 golfers joined forces with snooker ace Willie Thorne over the weekend to raise money for The Pink Ladies on behalf of anti-cancer charity the AECC. Willie, a keen golfer, was contacted by Evolution Bar at La Fuente to see if he would fly over and support the event and once he was on board bar owner John Williams worked tirelessly to make sure the event happened and was a success. The day started with breakfast at Evolution Bar, La Fuente, before the 12 teams headed to Lo Romero for the Texas Scramble tournament. Willie Thorne played one hole with each of the teams and players received a team and individual photo taken with the sporting legend. Even the afternoon downpour

couldn’t dampen the golfers’ spirits and it was a great atmosphere in Evolution as they returned to enjoy the buffet and a drink or two. Family and friend joined the event and Maria and the Pink Ladies organised a fundraising raffle. The event continued on Sunday with the presentation evening hosted at Fairways restaurant at Villamartin Plaza. A cava and canapés reception greeted the guests and Willie Thorne chatted to people and raised smiles with his quick witted sense of humour. A gorgeous three-course meal was followed by Willie presenting the prizes. First up was John Batterby with nearest the pin on the 5th and was awarded a signed golf shirt. The winning team was local singer Dan Davy, his Dad

The event raised 1,300 euros for the AECC which will be used to fund its subsidised cancer screening and early detection programme. Local entertainer Chloe Leigh had everyone dancing the night away and the event was such a success that organisers are now considering making it an annual event. John and Karen from Evolution would like to thank Willie Thorne, Karen and Roy at Fairways and Gavin from Albatros Golf for their support. And of course a huge thank you to all of the golfers that took part and the Pink Ladies who work tirelessly to raise money for the AECC.

Cycads are believed to have existed over 200 million years ago. They are cone-bearing plants and were here before flowering plants had evolved. They can cope with the hot and dry conditions that we have in the Costa Blanca and don’t need a lot of water to survive.

They are very beautiful to look at and have become a popular feature in private gardens as well as those of hotels and large estates around the world. Their fronds stretch out similar to those of a palm and unusually are dioecious meaning that there are male and female plants that produce separate cones and therefore need to be pollinated to reproduce, as with the majority of other plants. Some of them can remain small and compact whilst others can grow into huge palm like plants and look wonderful in all kinds of environments. The most common Cycad that is used in ornamental growth is the Cycads revoluta (sago palm) which originates from Japan and the Orient, producing either a single trunk or multi stems with dark green foliage. In Japan they have a plant that is over one thousand years old! The male plant is long and slender whilst the female plant is broader and wider and it is possible to see the seeds developing inside it. They can often be mistaken for either palms or tree ferns due to

their appearance; therefore they can be a good substitute as they have a good crown without the height of the trunk. All cycads are hardy and can adapt to a range of different soil, but it is essential to have good drainage as being to wet in their roots will destroy them. Whilst they are in their growing season it is important to water them every daymorning and eveningespecially if they are potted. Be careful though, as some species can have a dormant period, so will require less water, so the colder it is the less water they need. Cycads can suffer from chewing insects and scale, so make sure that the soil is well drained, as mentioned before and that they get regular long watering in their first 3-4 years. They also need to have a good, organic fertiliser. The use of white oil which consists of a cup of cooking

oil, half a cup of water plus a small amount of ordinary washing up liquid-diluting it with water so that it is 40 parts water to one part of the mixture then stir it up and spray it! You can propagate Cycads by either seeds or offsets. The best method is by their seeds as many species to not have offsets that occur regularly. If you do have offsets, however, you need to remove them from the main plant with a clean sharp knife or tool of the like leaving as little a wound as possible. Then you should treat the wound with a fungicide that has sulphur in it. As there are so many cycads to choose from they are ideal to include in new sustainable landscapes. As you can predict their size and appearance the garden can be planned accordingly. They can take their time to grow, but if you want to hasten the process the best means is by adding fertilizer and water on a regular basis. Cycads can also be transplanted easily, so for example if they are in pots and you are moving to a new home, they should survive the whole process without too much stress on them. Marc Vijverberg

Six held in joint counter-terrorism raid in Spain, Britain and Germany Intelligence agencies in Spain, Britain and Germany have launched a joint operation against jihadist terrorism in all three countries. The raid, which began last Tuesday afternoon, has so far resulted in at least six arrests: four in Spain, one in Britain and another in

Germany, police and judicial sources have said. The operation is being led by Spain’s High Court, the Audiencia Nacional, which has ordered several searches in three European cities. Sources close to the investigation told Spanish national

Iberian Lynxes saved from fire near Doñana National Park A family of 13 Iberian Lynxes trapped in the Doñana National Park forest fire have finally been found and moved to safety, although another has died in the process because of the trauma of being captured and transported. The creatures, an endangered species closely monitored in the Andalucía nature reserve in a bid to increase their population, live in semi-freedom at the El Acebuche breeding centre, but when the inferno broke out in the Moguer area, Huelva province, they were surrounded by flames and unable to be evacuated. Some 36 hours after the blaze erupted, they have been caught using humane traps similar to those used for ‘trap, neuter, return’ programmes with feral cats. A total of 11 were caught on Monday morning, but two others remained unaccounted for until later that evening, according to the conservation and wildlife charity LIFE Iberlince Andalucía.

The flames were just two kilometres from the El Acebuche centre and licking the edges of the Doñana, hindering the animals’ evacuation. Five males, four females and five babies were rescued on Sunday, but workers from the breeding centre had to go back for the remaining 13. Another, a female called Homer who has already had several litters, was overcome by the stress of the fire, smoke, capture and being moved from her site, and died of a probable heart attack. Meanwhile, the 14 other cats evacuated have been able to return to their habitat as it was deemed safe enough, and the blaze was sufficiently contained to ensure they would no longer be in the risk zone. In total, 2,000 people have been evacuated – mostly from a hotel, two holiday parks and a military base, but also thought to include some residents – but fire fighters expected to have the inferno under control within a few more days.

newspaper El Pais that a number of the detainees have ties to one another, and that they are allegedly involved in recruitment and propaganda work for the so-called Islamic State group (ISIS). They are also believed to have been sending combatants to conflict zones in Syria and Iraq. The suspects are alleged to have been in possession of video material containing inflammatory messages by ISIS leaders and showing acts of violence. Sources at the Spanish Interior Ministry said that a cell based in Palma de Mallorca was meeting on a weekly basis to determine the willingness of youths sympathetic to their cause to travel to combat zones. This group had progressively increased the number of individuals under its influence. The investigation began in 2015, when authorities found a website with videos that illustrated the process of recruiting a young Muslim man living in Spain, indoctrinating him and sending him to Syria. The person behind the video footage was found to be a Salafist imam who has been arrested in Britain and who is under investigation by several European countries. This individual had traveled to Palma de Mallorca and was priming a group – whose members have now been arrested as well – for recruitment, indoctrination and radicalization activities. He was also their spiritual leader. This Salafist preacher, whose public rhetoric was well known to

European police and intelligence services, was privately devoted to the task of securing combatants and funds for the fight in Syria. His personal security measures, which included constant residency changes, had made his arrest particularly difficult. The suspect held in Germany also looked to the UK-based preacher as his spiritual and ideological reference point. He was in direct contact with the other detainees, and had participated in the propaganda videos made by the group. The coordination work involved in this international raid forced judges, prosecutors and information service officials to remain at their posts for 24 hours. Very little information about the raid trickled out in an effort to ensure that the suspects would be found. Their identities and nationalities have not been released, as the operation is still underway.

Collaboration Collaborating agencies include Spain’s National Intelligence Center, the German Federal Police, the London

Metropolitan Police and Europol, among others. Two years ago, Spain set the threat of a terrorist attack on Spanish soil at Level 4 (with 5 being the maximum). Since then, 172 alleged jihadists have been arrested. Three of these were held in Madrid on 21st June, although two were subsequently released. Since the Islamist attacks on Madrid commuter trains on 11th March, 2004, there have been more than 700 arrests in Spain. More than a hundred of those detained have completed prison terms and have been subsequently expelled from the country for a period of 10 years. There is no evidence that any of them have returned. Counter-terrorism sources said that there are over 1,000 individuals on their radar, that 259 people are under formal court investigation, and that 500 telephones are being tapped. A silent “army” of more than 3,000 law enforcement officers, spies, prosecutors, judges and analysts are working in the shadows to stop jihadists from striking again in Spain, where 192 people died and over 2,000 were injured in the 2004 Madrid train bombings.

Spain heads EU mission against human smuggling in Mediterranean For the first time, Spain will lead the naval effort of the European Union’s Operation Sophia, which aims to fight human smuggling in the Mediterranean, diplomatic and military sources have said. Spain will head the effort between September and December of this year at the request of Italy, which has been in charge of the operation since it was set up in 2015. The Spanish Navy plans to send the Cantabria replenishment oiler to lead operations under the orders of a Spanish admiral. The move comes after Italy asked all 25 participating countries to contribute a command ship to take over its own naval units. Spain was the only country that responded to the request. To date, Spain contributed a frigate and a patrol aircraft to the counter human-trafficking effort, at a cost of €67 million in 2016. The Spanish Defense Ministry is aiming to maintain the current contingent of 254 troops and change the naval unit from the Canarias frigate to the Cantabria replenishment ship. Although Spain will have command of naval operations, Operation Sophia’s top overall commander will remain Italy’s Admiral Enrico Credendino, who is based in Rome. Ever since its inception in 2015, the five ships and six aircraft involved in

Eunavfor Med operation Sophia have rescued more than 36,000 people, taken 440 vessels used for human smuggling out of action and arrested 109 people smugglers. However, these efforts have not stopped the central Mediterranean from replacing the Aegean Sea as the main route into Europe for immigrants and refugees. Between January and April of this year, 37,200 people arrived on the coast of Italy, a 33 percent rise from the same period in 2016, according to Frontex, the European border agency. An estimated 1,600 people died during the journey. Diplomatic sources admitted that Operation Sophia has a limited impact on the effort to stem the flow of illegal immigration. These sources noted that the mission has not even managed to complete the second of four phases set out in its operating plan. Part of the problem is that in order to act in Libyan waters, the EU should have a petition from Libyan authorities or a resolution from the UN Security Council. But the government in Tripoli – the only one that is internationally recognised – barely controls just a small portion of the country, making it difficult for the EU to access the Libyan coastline and confiscate the boats used for human smuggling. This can only be done after the vessels leave Libya’s territorial waters.

WELCOME TO NAUPLIA with Vivalia Travel Nauplia or Nafplio is a seaport town in the Peloponnese in Greece that has expanded up the hillsides near the north end of the Argolic Gulf

Nauplia or Nafplio is a seaport town in the Peloponnese in Greece that has expanded up the hillsides near the north end of the Argolic Gulf. The town was an important seaport held under a succession of royal houses in the Middle Ages as part of the lordship of Argos and Nauplia, held initially by the de la Roche following the Fourth Crusade before coming

under the Republic of Venice and, lastly, the Ottoman Empire. The town was the capital of the First Hellenic Republic and of the Kingdom of Greece, from the start of the Greek Revolution in 1821 until 1834. Name The name of the town changed several times over the centuries. The modern Greek name of the town is Nafplio (In modern English, the most frequently used forms are Nauplia and Navplion. During the Classical Antiquity, it was known as Nauplia in Attic Greek and Naupliē (Ναυπλίη) in Ionian Greek In Latin, it was called Nauplia. During the Middle Ages, several variants were used in Byzantine Greek, including Náfplion, Anáplion, and Anáplia. During the Late Middle Ages and early modern period, under Venetian domination, the town was known in Italian as Napoli di Romania, after the medieval usage of "Romania" to refer to the lands of the Byzantine Empire, and to distinguish it from Napoli in Italy. Also during the early modern period, but this time under Ottoman rule, the Turkish name of the town was Mora Yenişehir, after Morea, a medieval name for the Peloponnese, and "yeni şehir," the Turkish term for "new city" (apparently a translation from the Greek Νεάπολη, Italian Napoli). The Ottomans also called it Anabolı. In the 19th century and early 20th century, the town was called indiscriminately Náfplion and Nafplio in modern Greek. Both forms were used in official documents and

travel guides. This explains why the old form Náfplion still occasionally survives up to this day. Geography Nafplio is situated on the Argolic Gulf in the northeast Peloponnese. Most of the old town is on a peninsula jutting into the gulf; this peninsula forms a naturally protected bay that is enhanced by the addition of man-made moles. Originally almost isolated by marshes, deliberate landfill projects, primarily since the 1970s, have nearly doubled the land area of the city. History Tourism emerged slowly in the 1960s, but not to the same degree as some other Greek areas. Nevertheless, it tends to attract a number of tourists from Germany and the Scandinavian countries in particular. Nafplio enjoys a very sunny and mild climate, even by Greek standards, and as a consequence has become a popular day or weekend road-trip destination for Athenians in wintertime. Nafplio is a port, with fishing and transport ongoing, although the primary source of local employment currently is tourism, with two beaches on the other side of

the peninsula from the main body of the town and a large amount of local accommodation. The building of the National Bank of Greece is probably the only one in the world to have been built in the Mycenaean Revival architectural style. Architecture and urban sculpture Acronauplia is the oldest part of the city though a modern hotel has been built on it. Until the thirteenth century, it was a town on its own. The arrival of the Venetians and the Franks transformed it into part of the town fortifications. Other fortifications of the city include the Palamidi and Bourtzi, which is located in the middle of the harbour. Nafplio maintains a traditional architectural style with many traditional-style colourful buildings and houses, partly influenced by the Venetians, because of the domination of 1338-1540. Also, modern-era neoclassical buildings are also preserved, while the building of the National Bank of Greece is an example of Mycenaean Revival architecture. Around the city can be found several sculptures and statues. They are related mostly with the modern history of Nafplio, such as the statues of Ioannis Kapodistrias, Otto of Greece and Theodoros Kolokotronis.

Compromís complains of on-going neglect of cleaning the Costa Political party Compromís for Orihuela has denounced, once again, the accumulation of garden waste on the coast. This time the specific example was the pruning waste from municipal palm trees left on Calle Catalejo, near Cabo Roig.

Beaches and Coordination of Services on the Coast, led by Luisa Boné (C's) and the Department of Road Cleaning and RSU, whose manager, Dámaso Aparicio, seems to be more interested in the internal battles of the PP than in carrying out his work.”

Uncollected cuttings

According to the party the ‘piles of pruning have been blocking the two lanes of the street for almost two weeks’. The secretary of the eco-socialist coalition, Martin Borislavov, has described the image that Orihuela Costa presents at this time as ‘grotesque’, adding that ‘this is due to the total lack of coordination between the different departments responsible. He said: “The issues are caused specifically the Department of

According to Borislavov the case of Calle Catalejo is ‘particularly surprising, since this time it is not the neighbors who have left the pruning in the street due to the lack of containers or eco-parques, but the municipal crews working for the local government itself’. These prunings are from the palm trees that are the responsibility of the city council. In addition, Compromis has warned of the danger posed by the problem of pruning in such

high temperatures of the summer, since ‘in many cases this waste ends up being left in open areas surrounded by dry scrubland, and this means potential fire danger’. Borislavov also noted that “associations based on the coast are complaining to the Road Cleaning department about the places where cuttings are accumulating. However, despite the complaints they claim these cuttings have still not been collected. Martin Borislavov said: “Although workers do a great job, the resources offered by the council are not enough. We believe that the solution is to make a Plan that takes into account the areas with the largest number of residences with gardens, coinciding with places where we usually find pruning waste, increase the number of containers, create eco-parks and expand the resources of the road cleaning service.” Finally, he called for Luisa Boné and Dámaso Aparicio to “take responsibility for the complaints of the neighbors and make a real effort to clean the streets of Orihuela Costa.” Mireille Toddington

HELP at Home for those who need it most! The latest organisation that has been generous enough to make a sizeable donation to the HELP at Home CB Community bus appeal was the Campoverde Theatre Group last week, which presented a cheque for 600 euros

to the local charity, proceeds from their musical theatre supper show ‘The Good Old Days’ which they performed at The Fiesta Plaza in early May. One of the longest running theatre and drama groups in the area, the popular players are certainly not sitting back and relaxing in the summer sun as they are already preparing for their next supper show, ‘A Magical Murder Mystery Tour’ which will take place at the same venue, 27-29 September, more details of which we will have in due course. Meanwhile with the ‘Bus Appeal’ now topping 22,000 euro, Help at Home CB are not too far away from achieving their total. Executive member Eileen Randall said “there is an urgent requirement for such a vehicle in the area, one that can provide much needed transport to those with mobility problems, transporting them to or from medical or hospital appointments or even shopping, perhaps with the occasional day out. We are close to achieving our target and in

the not too distant future we are determined to have such a vehicle on the road.” Whilst similar vehicles do exist on the Costa Blanca the major advantage of the HELP at Home CB vehicle is that it will be

available, not just to their own members, which is very much the case with other groups and organisations, but it will also be at the disposal of any member of the public with mobility problems that requires its use. “We are now on the final lap,” she continued “we are talking to car dealerships, as well as discussing the specifics of exactly what it needs to have fitted. We are also now looking out for suitable drivers, so that we can establish an appropriately trained team of individuals, who will be able to provide this important service in our name.” Of course while the appeal continues so do the day to day activities of this much relied on charity, with their shop in Playa Flamenca, a branch in Quesada, their very worthwhile and productive house clearances, work within the local community, carers and befrienders, as well as their recent involvement with Caritas, to whom they now make regular donations of foodstuffs, toiletries and consumables.

Indeed, as well as the donations for the shop, the board tell me they are now actively seeking donations of dry goods, tinned goods, baby goods, toiletries and the like, for the Caritas charity, which they will be delighted to store at the Playa Flamenca shop and to pass on to caritas, which, on the Orihuela Costa alone, is still supporting in excess of a hundred families on a daily basis. One additional, but very current, project that the charity has now undertaken, is the provision of support to the Orihuela Orphanage, Amigos de San Jose Obrero. This children’s home cares for 67 youngsters between the ages of 6 and 18, and has at least one local patron, the popular local entertainer and dedicated fundraiser Stevie Spit. HELP at Home CB recently delivered a van load of furniture and other goods to the home which, with little help from the state, relies almost entirely on charitable donations. They are currently seeking help with books, clothing and shoes for the children, which will help enormously on their return to school in September, so if you are a local company looking to support a ‘child related charity’ speak to the ladies at the Playa Flamenca shop and they will be delighted to advise how you might best become involved. As it continues to expand the charity is also looking for suitable office accommodation close to its Playa Flamenca shop, which can be used as a ‘drop in’ or an ‘information’ centre. It will ideally have a little additional space that can provide a little storage. And in terms of its most appreciated asset….personnel! Volunteers are urgently required to work in the office or the shop, to work as drivers, befrienders or fundraisers. So if you can spare a morning a week, or even just the occasional couple of hours, especially during the summer months, please get in touch with the centre by calling: 965 328 794, by email: charitycentre.helpathomecb@gmail.co m or by simply dropping in during any weekday morning.

Studio32 donates to local charities Studio32 are delighted to have been able to present the San Fulgencio

Alzheimer’s Society and Music school with a cheque for €2,500. This amount was raised following their recent production of the musical ‘Mack and Mabel’ which altogether enabled €3,500 to be collected for charity. The cheque was presented by Philip Wilson, chairman of Studio32 at Fulgencio Town Hall. Receiving the cheque was Benjamin Villena Rodriquez who is president of the San Fulgencio Alzheimer’s Society which will receive €2,250. Benjamin thanked Studio32 for their continued support for the charity which provides help in the community to families and individuals dealing with Alzheimer’s.

The €2,500 donated to the San FulgencioMusic School will help purchase instruments and music for students. Rosa Maria Mira was at the town hall to receive the donation. ‘In only four years,’ explained Philip, ‘we have raised over €20,000 for local charities and we will continue to support AFA San Fulgencio and local good causes in the coming year.’ Studio32’s next performance will be their winter show. This will be the classic Irving Berlin ‘White Christmas’ which will be performed from Wednesday 29th November until Saturday 2nd December at the CardenalBelluga Theatre in San Fulgencio. Advanced ticket bookings are already being taken and this popular show is likely to sell out quickly. If you would like to be involved in the next Studio32 production, the company are always keen to recruit new members both on the stage and behind the scenes. They are currently seeking to expand their backstage and technical crew and would welcome you getting in touch if you think you might be able to help. Keeping 18 teenagers occupied during the 3 month summer holiday period is a very difficult task, so most of this money will be added to funds recently handed over by Stevie Spit, and the staff at the Home have a full

programme of events planned for the youngsters. These include visits to museums; Rio Safari; cinema; aquapark etc, and include treats for the children during these excursions. Many of these young people would not get these opportunities in their normal family life. The next fund-raising night at Quesada Fish & Chips is on 19th July,

with entertainment by, the ever popular, Woody & the Peckers. Tickets, including a 2 course meal, are just 10 euros, and can be bought from the Restaurant, Post Room Benijofar, The Card Place in Benimar and REDZ cafe bar in Quesada. Tickets will be limited, to ensure space and comfort for all diners, so early booking is advised. Money raised on this night will be donated to Torrevieja Stroke Support.

Orihuela Summer School

The Councillor for Education, Begoña Cuartero, has welcomed the students who will participate in the Summer School of Orihuela, which is located in different schools across the city, coast and districts. This year “we have a total of 540 students between the ages of 3 and 12 years old who will take part in this first fortnight and that will increase over the following weeks,” said the Councillor. In the city, the Department of Education offers this service at the schools Virgen de la Puerta, Villar Palasí and Miguel Hernández. On the coast it is located at Los Dolses School, and also there is one in the hamlet of Molins. “The school offers recreational and leisure activities and also have an educational component,” said the Councillor, who added that the school Miguel Hernández is also being protagonist in these early days with activities related to the poet after which it takes its name. On the first

afternoon of the Summer School students visited the Casa Museo de Miguel Hernández. Paloma Ferrer, director of Oriverano the management company running the programme, explained that: “The activities are very varied as promotion of reading, cultural activities, sports, crafts, water, among others.” The Councillor for Social Welfare, Sabina-Goretti Galindo indicated that this year will also include as of 1st July 79 students who receive the contribution of Social Welfare to secure their places. This is made possible following a grant from the Conselleria of Equality and Inclusive Policies for a total of 15,837 euros. This covers part of the costs for lunch and the activities. The registration deadline is still open, so that parents can still complete the documentation through the website www.oriverano.com if they wish their children to attend at any time across the summer holiday period. La Mata paseo grows The restoration of the paseo or walkway by the La Mata beach has now been completed. The paseo was severely damaged during the strong torrential rains and it has cost €650,000 to repair it. During the restoration work an additional 1,000 square metres has been added. The storms wrecked the promenade in December and work finished on their restoration at the end of May. On Wednesday 21st June a government official from the Alicante Province, Juan Carlos Moragues, visited the new construction along with a number of other delegates from both the province and Torrevieja town hall. The original wooden structure of the promenade has now been removed and a concrete wall has been erected. It is hoped that this will avoid further damage during bad weather in the future. New lighting has also been added at the end of the terraces. Some of the beach has been restocked during the work. Whilst in the town, Juan Moragues visited the tower in the bay area of La Mata needing restoration work. The repairs to this will cost €350,000 but the building is considered to be of cultural interest and the work will go ahead. It is believed that the small tower was part of a network of watchtowers that were intended to help guard the coast against attack. Suzanne O’Connell

THE SOUND OF MUSICALS, ORIHUELA COSTA RESORT When an amalgamation of talent and professionalism arrive on stage together, it is a sign to sit back and be royally entertained, and that's exactly what happened, for some two hours, this warm Saturday, at the Orihuela Costa Resort. Melody Makers International, under the baton of conductor / director and arranger Nigel Hopkins, bought the magic of the sound of the musicals, to "Full houses". The accomplished band, members of which had flown out from the United Kingdom especially for the concert, did not disappoint. A "My Fair Lady" medley started the concert off in fine form, with a solo by Verity Hall, and Bill Nicholson. Melody Makers then reminded the audience to delights of "West Side Story", an arrangement by Nigel Hopkins, and again, a delightful solo by Verity Hall. Bought to the stage by Leonard Bernstein in 1959, the concept came from William Shakespeare's, Romeo and Juliet. The haunting song "The Impossible Dream" from the show "Man of La Mancha", arranged again by Nigel, for Melody Makers, featured the wonderful voice of Graham Cooke. We were to be treated to Graham's voice again, a little later in the concert, where we would find him resting in the shadow of The Cotton Blossom, moored on The Mississippi River. A medley from "Singing In The Rain" followed, and the classic "Losing My Mind", from 1971 production of "Follies" performed delightfully by Rebecca Holt. Before the interval, the

Cornish coast beckoned, where we joined soloists Alyson Horsfall, Verity Hall, Police Constable (Mind how you go) Bill Nicholson and Melody Makers, on the quay in Penzance, for Gilbert & Sullivan's 1879 tale of "Pirates", with a rendition of "When The Foreman Bares His Steel". A medley from Lionel Bart's "Oliver" introduced part two of the concert, followed by Alyson Horsfall and Philip Mitchell with the enduring "When The Children Are Asleep" from Rogers & Hammerstein's 1945 production of "Carousel". Songs from "Miss Saigon", " Beauty & The Beast" and "Phantom of the Opera" followed, being treated to a solo by Verity, of "Think Of Me". Again from "My Fair Lady" we visited the races at Ascot, for "The Gavotte". Eric Berg then donned his racing colours to bring us "I've Gotter Motter" from "The Arcadians" when it was soon time to tie alongside "The Cotton Blossom" to hear Graham Cooke, tell the story of "Old Man River". To bring this concert to a close, it was a medley of songs from Schonberg & Boublil's remarkable "Les Miserables", with soloists Verity Hall, Rebecca Holt and Bill Nicholson. Orihuela Costa Community Care were the charity being supported, with a bucket collection taking place, as a very happy audience made it's way home, following, yet again, an excellent concert by Melody Makers International and Nigel Hopkins. Wedding worries My fiance and I are getting married in September. His cousin has just showed me her outfit, and it is the same colour as the bridesmaids dresses. She is not part of the bridal party, and it would look stupid if she wore the same colour. How do I tell her I want her to wear something else?

I think perhaps you should have said something right away, when you saw the dress. Does she know what your chosen colour scheme is? Did she choose the dress deliberately? She may not have done it purposefully. It might be difficult raising the subject now, but if you really think it will spoil your day, perhaps you could ask your Fiance’s mother to have a word to give her the opportunity of choosing something else to wear. Failing that, if this cousin isn’t part of the bridal party, then she won’t be in the line-up for any of the important photos, apart from the group photo. It may not be so noticeable, so ultimately you might decide not to make a fuss.

Should I stay for the sake of my child? I am father to a boy aged 7. His mother and I no longer love each other after she had an affair, which is still continuing. I want to leave the relationship. The arguments are getting worse, my boy is suffering from behavioural problems and has started seeing a child psychologist. I stay only for my son who I feel would be worse if I left. My partner thinks I should leave, but I will miss my boy. She says I can see my son whenever I want and we can share custody.

I think if you haven’t already discussed with your child’s psychologist, the likelihood of you both separating you should do so soon. It is not always the right decision to stay for the sake of the children. At the moment your son is witnessing your hostility for each other, and it is affecting him. Don’t feel guilty about leaving as I think it is better to have two happy parents living separately, than two miserable parents living together.

Celebrity patronage for Are ‘you’ buying the home, or is your Finca la Castellana ‘friend’? which saw Glynn himself lose his locks for the charity. Glynn’s sister is well-know British actress Kim Taylforth, star of shows such as Bad Girls, London’s Burning, Family Affairs and Brookside…

Local resident Glynn Picton set up a facebook group called Costa Blanca Amigo's some time ago. The group became so popular that it is now a closed group, with a membership of 500 like-minded people who meet for coffee, go on trips and other social activities. Over the last six months Glynn and the group have been raising funds for local animal rescue charity Finca la Castellana, in total so far they have raised nearly 2,000€ the funds from which have paid for a much-needed washing machine. The group has raised the money through coach trips, coffee mornings, a gorilla auction and a head shave –

.which means of course that his other sister is Eastenders actress Gillian Taylforth. Kim became interested in her brother’s fundraising campaign and immediately wanted to be a part

of it. Kim visits this area regularly and on her latest holiday wanted to look around the Finca. Kim met all of the volunteers and charity founder Jeanette and of course spent quite some time getting to know the four legged residents. Kim was extremely impressed with the work done at Fina la Castellana, how well all the animals are looked after, and how well they all get on ensuring that the Finca provides a very calm, safe environment. Not only has Kim offered to be a patron of the charity but she has also fallen in love with one of its dogs, Marco and he will now be joining her in UK very shortly. The team at Finca la Castellana hope this will be a prosperous relationship that will help the charity to become better known on a wider scale. Kim will be mentioning her experience on the Lorraine show on 5th July, which will give the charity a huge awareness boost. Mireille Toddington

uying a home is a very personal thing to do. It will be your home, whether to live in permanently or a place to relax and unwind on holiday. Your idea of a dream home can become a little distorted though, if you are taking your trusted friend with you on the viewing appointments. Yes, they may know you very well, and they only have your best interests at heart, but they can guide you in the wrong direction with what you have in your own mind of what it is, you’re actually looking for. It is a very frustrating process, not only for you, but for your Real Estate Agent too, as they could be showing you your perfect home, and yet your friend seems to like to joke about certain quirky aspects of the home. It can be funny, but

it will muddle your way of thinking and divert your attention off the positive aspects the property could be offering you. I’ve also seen sometimes where the friend shows a little jealousy, when you’re getting enthusiastic on a home that maybe slighter larger than their own, or has a swimming pool when they do not. I don’t think it’s intentional, but just a quick comment here and there, does throw doubt in your mind. The best of it all is, they probably don’t even know they’re doing it! If you want to use your friend in a positive way, ask them about areas. Then you’ll be able to use their advice to your advantage, and your friend will feel that they have been able to help! So to keep that friendship going strong, look at your potential future home through your own eyes, and go with your gut feeling on whether you could see yourself in that home. Imagine the barbecues and parties you could be having there with your trusted friend! Think property? Think us, because life’s complicated enough! President and Vice President

The Royal British Legion’s District North Spain has announced some changes in its Committee line-up. The new District President is Mr Nigel Hamilton-Hails who was previously Vice Chairman. Nigel has now taken over from Lloyd Milen who stood down from the role following his promotion to Consul General in Barcelona. Nigel said he felt privileged to be asked to take on this prestigious role. “We have a very busy few years ahead of us, especially as we are approaching the Legion's Centenary in 2021. There will be challenges, but I am looking forward to working to promote the Charity within our District.” The new Vice Chairman is Lt Col Pete Lodge MBE. Pete served a 39 year-long career in the Parachute Regiment. He is no stranger to the Legion having previously undertaken the role of

District Vice President. Pete said it was an honour to be considered for the position; he is proud of what the Legion stands for and achieves and he is looking forward to working closely with members of the Committee and supporting its many branches. The District has 19 Branches and all arrange varied social events, as well as raising money for the Poppy Appeal and supporting our beneficiaries. The Councillor for Equality, SabinaGoretti Galindo, commemorated LGTBI Pride Day (Wedensday 28th June) with the raising of a special solidarity flag on the balcony of the Town Hall and the signing of an agreement with the Association Diversitat. The agreement ‘confirms the commitment and support of this Government team towards the LGTBI community’. The agreement includes measures for the prevention, awareness and visibility of the group, especially from the educational field, while “providing professionals and adequate resources for those who are victims of hate crimes because of their sexual status or gender identity,” said the Councillor. Galindo was accompanied by Toño Abad, president of Diversitat – a nonprofit association for human rights and real equality.

He said: “Orihuela is the first municipality in the province of Alicante to adhere to this agreement and we thank them for their commitment to include diversity in their municipal agenda.” The agreement includes, among other points, that the City Council becomes part of the Hate Crimes Bureau of the Valencian Observatory, and also involves the implementation of the Municipal Plan for Attention to Diversity with measures such as information tables, courses, presentations and workshops. The Councilor for Equality also recalled that from the next academic year will develop training workshops in secondary education institutes of Orihuela in matters of attention to diversity, especially sexual, family and gender. The Councillor explained that ‘this afternoon one of the streets of Orihuela will be covered with colorful umbrellas to promote the visibility of the community’. In addition, a roundtable on hate crimes will be held on the campus of the UMH and next Friday, 7th July will be held for the first time a great celebration of diversity, which will consist of a great concert with various performances that will take place on the Malecon River from 8.00pm. Fire at football stadium A small fire had to be extinguished at the Vicente Garcia football stadium on the afternoon of the 29th June. No one was affected as the stadium was closed more than one and a half years ago. There are concerns that leaving the stadium abandoned for this length of time must ultimately lead to more outbreaks of this kind. The fire brigade, based at the Parque Vega Sur in Torrevieja, put out the fire which was in a covered part of the large stadium. The fire was detected at 16.55 in the part of the stadium previously used as a press office. Fortunately, the fire was only a very small one and was easily brought under control. Although the stadium is the official home of Torrevieja football club it was closed due to concerns about the safety of the main stand. However, leaving it closed off to the public will ultimately mean its further deterioration. The council maintain that the intention is still to re-open the stadium however, the stand where the fire occurred is the one that is due to be demolished. A report will be given by the fire brigade of the likely cause of the fire. Suzanne O’Connell

Spaniard wins European Inventor of the Year Award The latest European Inventor of the Year Award has gone to a 38year-old Spaniard for his creation which could put the GPS in the shade for geo-tagging accuracy. José Ángel Ávila, from Madrid,

process of the autoimmune condition Lupus, and Italy's Giuseppe Remuzzi, Carlamaria Zoja and Ariela Benigni with their treatment for chronic kidney disease.

works as an engineer for the European Space Agency (ESA) alongside top physics experts such as Lionel Ries, from Belgium; Laurent Lestarquit and Jean-Luc Issler, from France's National Space Studies Centre (CNES), and Günter Heinde from the University of Munich in Germany. Ávila and his team have created a radio signal for the Galileo satellite navigation system which has beaten France’s Sylviane Müller with her pioneering treatment for reducing pain and slowing the

“Galileo will be a fundamental contribution to the future of Europe and the world as a whole,” Ávila said when he picked up his prize in Venice, Italy. “The navigation services Galileo will supply will be independent of other world powers, and its receivers will work in areas where other systems currently cannot get a signal. “We have shown we are able to demonstrate that Europe can develop a sat-nav system better than the one provided by the USA’s legacy,” Lestarquit, on the

team receiving the award, added. Chairman of the European Patents Office – which grants the awards – Benoît Battistelli says the winners and runners-up have ‘not only contributed to technological development, but also created a mamor social and financial impact’. Ávila's invention comprises two flexible and high-accuracy radio waves, which took 15 years to develop, and which will give the Galileo system – a direct competitor with the GPS that will be in full operation by the year 2020 – a level of precision and clarity as yet unprecedented in geo-localisation technology. The radio signal does not cause interference with other sat-nav systems, and is inspired on the GPS, designed in the USA; the GLONASS, created in Russia, and he Beidou, from China – but vastly more sophisticated. Galileo, with an initial operating capacity of 18 of its 30 satellites in orbit, is the only satnav system which does not have a military origin – it is a civil invention, and will give Europe full independence from other world powers in this area. The European Inventor of the Year Award does not come with any monetary reward – its value lies purely in the prestige of having scooped the accolade.

HOW TO MEDITATE

§ Find somewhere quiet where you are not going to be disturbed, with no phones ringing, dogs barking, etc. § Put some relaxing music on (low) § Light a couple of candles, aromatherapy oil, and/or some incense (do not leave any burning when you are not in the room) § Either sit upright in a chair with your eyes closed and hands on your knees or lie down with eyes closed (it may be preferable with meditation to sit in a chair as there is less likelihood of you falling asleep). First of all, you are going to ‘ground’ or ‘anchor’ yourself. To do this, imagine roots that look like tree roots, growing from the soles of your feet connecting with mother earth. If you are feeling negative in any way, let those feelings run through you and out into the earth. § The next step is a protective measure, and I want you to imagine a large ball of light over your head (crown chakra). The ball of light descends around your body, wrapping you in a cocoon of beautiful light. If you prefer, you can imagine a deep purple velvet cloak with long sleeves and a hood. Put the cloak on, button it to the top, and put the hood up. You can of course, use your own

protective shield. It is entirely up to you which method you use! § You are now ready to start meditating. Meditations come in many forms. Some people find it easier to follow a guided meditation in a group or class situation. Others prefer to be on their own listening to a guided meditation CD or preferring to ‘go on their own journey’ within meditation. Whatever you choose, this is your experience and no two meditations are the same – even in a group guided meditation. The hardest thing to do is to still your mind, which comes with practice. Release any negative thoughts and replace them with positive affirmations or by learning to quieten your mind. § Start off by concentrating on your breathing. Inhale two long deep breaths, exhaling slowly and steadily. § Imagine going to a beach, a lovely

garden or somewhere familiar to you, where you can relax. § Enjoy your meditation, believe in your ability to quieten your mind, and focus on any images, colours or messages you receive within the meditation. § It is a good idea to write down your meditations in a journal including how you felt, what you saw, sensed, smelled etc. As you look back through your journal you will see how you have gone deeper within your meditations and how you have grown through the experience. § Do not worry if you feel you don’t get much to start with. Please, whatever you do, don’t give up! Meditating is a wonderful and breathtaking experience. As with everything else, the more you practice, the more rewarding it will be. Just let your mind become free, and open, and more than anything, trust and believe.

CONFUSED BY HEALTH ADVICE? The world of food is full of conflicting advice and this seems to be especially true in terms of health advice. Over the years we have been told that everything from eggs, potatoes and bacon were bad for us and over time some have these claims have been disproven and some still stand. Eating low fat, low calorie foods was exactly what we should be doing, now a certain amount of fat is good and low calorie products can be bad if they substitute sugars for fats to improve taste. The contradictions seem never ending; drinking coffee is good for you; it will give you cancer. Eggs are part of nature’s natural bounty; they raise your cholesterol. So many claims; so little agreement. Yet there is a fairly consistent body of research that points at the health benefits, or otherwise, of most popular foods. Here we sort the facts from the fads. We have trawled the internet to find what the experts think and find their overall verdicts on everything from booze to butter. Here’s what they had to say ... Coffee There have been claims drinking coffee will increase your risk of succumbing to a whole range of terrible things. Yet when scientists followed over 120,000 men and women for more than 20 years they found “regular coffee consumption was not associated with an increased mortality rate in either men or women”. In fact, it appears to be mildly protective. But we simply don’t know what it is in coffee that helps. The amount of coffee you can safely drink without side effects, such as a temporary rise in blood pressure or insomnia, may be down to your genes, and in particular how much of the liver enzyme CYP1A2 you have. Verdict Two to five cups of coffee every day are fine, but side effects may be dictated by your genes. Diet Drinks Even though the label on the bottle says sugar-free, research suggests I shouldn’t be fooled into thinking it is any better for my waistline than a standard version. According to a recent review by Imperial College London, diet drinks stimulate sweet taste receptors, potentially encouraging us to eat food as compensation. Psychologically, we might be more inclined to treat ourselves to something unhealthy, as we’ve had a ‘good’ low-calorie drink. I can vouch for that one. When it comes to drinking standard drinks versus a diet drink, I still opt for diet. If I’m serious about making the best choice, I’ll opt for water. Verdict Stick to water rather than soft drinks and your body (and wallet) will thank you. Alcohol There is a fairly consistent body of evidence that drinking modest amounts of alcohol may protect you against heart disease. A recent study, published in the European Heart Journal, followed more than 14,000 adults aged 45 and older for 24 years and found that men and women who reported drinking up to 12 units of alcohol per week (the equivalent of around six glasses of wine) had a lower risk of developing heart failure than those who never drank. They also found that those most likely to have died from any cause over the course of the study had been heavier drinkers, where women were drinking more than 14 units and men were drinking more than 21 units a week. Verdict Enjoy up to six glasses of wine a week to potentially reduce your risk of heart failure. Any more could be hazardous to health. Become familiar with what constitutes a ‘unit’ of alcohol as many people underestimate. For example a unit of alcohol is a small glass of wine – not any size glass of wine.

Eggs A few years ago we were being told by nutritionists not to eat more than a few eggs a week on the grounds that eggs contain cholesterol and cholesterol is bad for you. However, a meta-analysis of 17 studies published in the BMJ in 2013 concluded that “higher consumption of eggs is not associated with increased risk of coronary heart disease or stroke”. Whether scrambled, boiled or poached, eggs are a superb source of protein, are rich in vitamins and minerals and make a great start to the day. Verdict As long as you’re not frying them or smothering them in fat, eggs are an excellent breakfast choice. Protein breakfasts are a great way to start the day. Egg on wholegrain toast with avocado and smoked salmon is the perfect start to any day. Red Meat If you believe the headlines, eating red meat will stop your heart, give you cancer, and destroy the planet. The meat which is said to be a threat to health is red meat like steak, lamb, pork and mince. One recent paper, Meat Consumption And Mortality came to the – perhaps surprising – conclusion that eating moderate amounts of red meat had no effect on mortality, in fact up to 80g a day seemed to be protective. But there’s a significant sting in the tail. The study found that eating processed meat, like sausages, bacon and ham, did have a negative effect on health. Verdict Small amounts of red meat are fine, but keep the processed stuff as an occasional treat. If you eat meat try and find organic, grass fed sources and eat red meat just once or twice a week. Fish and poultry are healthier substitutes. Salt Most of us know too much salt is bad for us. What’s less well-known is that too little is also harmful for us. We need salt for muscle and nerve activity. If we eat too little, we develop cramps and neurological symptoms, and can even die. But most of us consume too much salt. Excess salt intake is linked to high blood pressure, increasing the risk of heart disease or stroke. The NHS recommends that adults should consume 6g of salt a day, but our average intake is nearer 8g. Yet working out how much we eat can be tricky because salt is hidden in many foods. A whopping 75 per cent of salt that we eat comes from foods like bread, baked beans and biscuits, while salt added during cooking and at the table makes up a small amount of our intake. Verdict Keeping salt intake down can help blood pressure stay healthy. Read the labels on products that you buy and when cooking try swapping salt for herbs and spices to add flavour to dishes. Chocolate Chocolate’s main claim to health is its effect on your arteries. In 2012 a systematic review of the effects of cocoa consumption on blood pressure, which looked at 20 studies involving over 800 people, concluded that: “Flavanol-rich chocolate and cocoa products may have a small but statistically significant effect in lowering blood pressure”. But it pointed out most of the studies took place over a short period of time (between two and eight weeks) and the size of the effect was not impressive. A more recent paper, published in the journal Heart in 2015, found was those eating the most chocolate (up to 99g a day) had the lowest risk of developing heart disease or stroke. But there may have been confounding factors at play, such as the chocolate eaters being more active.

Verdict The odd square of dark, cocoa-rich chocolate isn’t going to hurt, but the jury is out as to whether it will do you any good. If you are going to indulge then choose high quality, high coca content of 80 per cent or more. Fruit Plenty of studies out there show that people who eat fruit tend to be healthier than those that shun fruit, and in addition they have reduced risks of cardiovascular disease and cancer. This could be because fruit contains vitamins and fibre, which are good for health, as well as antioxidants that repair cells. A BMJ study found the risk of disease development reduced by 42 percent for those eating seven or more portions of fruit and veg a day. The government’s current advice has stuck at five daily portions. But don’t get your fruit fix by swigging back juices or smoothies. Many fruit juices contain large amounts of water and sugar. The whole deal is the real deal. Verdict Start the fruit habit early, but eat it in its natural form rather than squished into juices and smoothies.

Butter Butter is a saturated fat. For decades, we have been advised to reduce saturated fat in our diets, because it increases bad cholesterol in the blood, which can clog arteries, causing heart attacks or strokes. Public Health England advises people to cut down on saturated fat. On the other hand, researchers at the University of Cambridge presented a study in 2014, published in Annals Of Internal Medicine, which stated there was no significant evidence regarding a correlation between saturated fats and a higher risk for heart disease. Hence the ‘butter is back’ headlines. But those behind the study warned against oversimplification. They had found that there are different types of saturated fats – some good, some bad. The team agreed with butter being linked to bad cholesterol. This is backed up by a recent study by researchers from Harvard, who found that a 5 per cent higher intake of saturated fats, like butter, was associated with a 25 percent increased risk of heart disease. Verdict Not all saturated fat is created equal, but more research is needed. Stick to olive and sunflower oil for cooking, and use butter sparingly.

Brit surrenders following Crimewatch appeal A British fugitive swam to Gibraltar to hand himself in after seeing his own face on Crimewatch. Jason Waterman is wanted in connection with a 1.2 million pound cocaine smuggling inquiry. The 32 year old, nicknamed jugs for his distinctively large ears, arrived on the Rock reportedly dripping wet. Originally from Watford, the martial arts and boxing fan, who used to regularly work out in North London gyms, was clutching a bag of soggy clothing. Jason has been accused of being around Bagby airfield, near Thirsk, North Yorkshire, in October 2015, after a small plane had landed loaded with drugs. Border Force officers pounced on the light aircraft which had left Holland, but a man was seen running away and was not caught. A briefcase continuing seven kilos of cocaine was taken from the airfield the aircraft pilot was arrested, but later found not guilty of importation offences. Workers at the airfield, popular with hobby pilots were said to be astonished by the drama.

Police appealed for help tracking down Waterman, who they described as have a ‘distinctive’ appearance. Jason told the Gibraltar police that he had seen the National Crime Agency report on the BBC’s Crimewatch Roadshow that morning and wanted to hand himself in. The NCA said they are now seeking to extradite him under a European Arrest Warrant. The north east operations manager at NCA, Brian Shaw, said: “It might sound like a cushy number, sitting around watching Crimewatch Roadshow on a Monday morning, but life as a fugitive is hard and stressful. “The NCA first issued an appeal for Waterman in London nearly a year ago clearly the latest appeal has made him crack. To everyone else feeling the stress of being on the run, I would say we are patient people, we keep the pressure on, and we never stop looking for you.” The NCA have previously said the seized cocaine, if cut and sold in the UK, would have had a street value in excess of 1 million pounds.

Insect and pest control across Orihuela and the coast The Councillor for Health, Noelia Grao, has detailed the latest actions carried out by the Department to ‘control and prevent possible infestations of pests, insects and rodents in the municipality’ through the application of appropriate treatments and analysis to reduce populations and propagation. These treatments are carried out regularly through the year by the company Lokimica, both in the city and the parishes – and especially during the summer season in Orihuela Costa. Treatments are also carried out throughout the year in municipal buildings and schools. Councillor Grao recalled that citizens who have any severe incident of pest plagues can contact the City Council through the telephone number of the Department of Health – 965 305 983 as well as through the App ‘Orihuela in your hand’ which can be downloaded for free. Lidia Nájar, a representative of the pest control company said that: “It is important that citizens collaborate by maintaining good housing and gardens.” He also indicated that the most common species today are cockroaches and rodents, and to avoid a possible summer increase in these pests special works are being carried out, particularly in Orihuela Costa, where there is a greater number of incidents due to the number of empty houses during the winter. In The old town of Orihuela the company is also carrying out specific works for similar reasons. Councillor Grao explained that the

Men at work schedule will end its first round in a few weeks and will start again from the first village to the last corner of Orihuela with an immediate second round of prevention and control. The Department of Health has already taken action in: Correntías Altas y Baixas, Desamparados, Torremendo, San Bartolomé, La Campaneta, Molins, Raiguero de Bonanza, La Matanza, La Murada, La Aparecida, Raiguero de Levante, Hurchillo and Arneva, While the works are now focused on treatments in Orihuela Costa

and in the city centre. Last April this service was upgraded with important improvements ranging from treatments to avoid proliferation in parks and educational centres of the processionary catepillar, to the tapering of palm trees, with five teams operating throughout the municipality. This new contract also includes a treatment against leishmaniasis in the Animal Protection Centre. Mireille Toddington

Will Rodman (James Franco), a scientist in San Francisco, is experimenting with a drug that he hopes will cure his father’s (John Lithgow) Alzheimer's disease. After his work is deemed a failure, Will becomes the guardian of Caesar, an infant chimp who was exposed to Will’s drug. Caesar displays unusual intelligence, and Will decides to continue his experiments secretly. Ladies Day at Eden Newly opened Restaurant Eden was a complete sell out for its Royal Ascot Ladies Day celebration. The Royal Meeting only really started to take shape with the introduction of the Gold Cup in 1807. The Gold Cup remains the feature race of the third day of Royal Ascot, traditionally the busiest day of the week and colloquially known as “Ladies’ Day”. More than 80 ladies donned their finest outfits and gorgeous hats and descended

on Eden to enjoy a day of fun, food and entertainment. Guests arrived to a cava reception and then enjoyed a tradition afternoon tea including canapés, cakes and chocolate fountain with marshmallows and strawberries. The ladies joined in the fun of the day by watching live televised racing coverage from Ascot before competing in their own fun race, The Eden Restaurant Stakes - on hobby horses! Next came the prizes for the best hat, which was a tough

one for the judges as all of the ladies had made a sterling effort and looked amazing. The afternoon stretched into the evening with live music from No Limit duo and an evening buffet consisting of paella, chicken, a variety of salads, and many other delightful delicacies. The Eden chef and front of house staff worked really hard to ensure the event was a huge success and one that was enjoyed by all.

Benefits of the most popular summer drinks When the heat increases so does the amount of liquids we consume and we don’t just drink water to quench our thirst. There are a variety of beverages to which we turn to hydrate and enjoy throughout the day in our leisure time with family and friends. But many of us don’t know how the most popular summer drinks can contribute and benefit our health. Beer, one of the most widely consumed beverages in Spain, lowers the risk of developing cardiovascular disease by increasing good cholesterol (HDL) and polyphenols, protects against neurodegenerative diseases and improves bone health because it contains silicon. It also has an antiinflammatory and antibiotic thanks to hops, one of its essential components’ effects. It is also highly recommended for athletes, Carolina Perez, nutritionist at Quirónsalud Hospital Torrevieja, "consumption of a moderate amount of beer after intense activity regains rapid rehydration and helps prevent muscle aches. Beer for its taste, aroma and being carbonated more so served cold, is accepted better than water in situations where thirst is not present, as it is 2% of dehydration that compromises performance sports but it is not significant enough to combat thirst." Slush, one of the most popular

summer drinks, a cold drink served while still crystallized. Sorbet, however, is halfway between slush and ice cream it contains less fat than ice cream, but more sugar. The main component of the slush is water, whose presence represents

about 85-90% of its composition. Therefore, its calorie content is not very high, is around 60-70 calories per 100 milliliters. In its preparation no fats are used (unlike ice creams), so no added fat

or cholesterol. However, the consumption of these products should not abused because, although they have no fat, they have significant amounts of sugar. The absence of fat and cholesterol in your composition can be a positive for people with high blood cholesterol levels who want to indulge occasionally. However, it is important that the consumption of these products occurs sporadically to avoid excess sugar in the diet. Another irresistible drink is horchata, consumed in two versions, liquid and slush, the basic ingredients are water, tiger nuts and sugar. Horchata is a rich sugary energy drink with healthy fats, highly recommended for all ages but especially for patients with cardiovascular disease who do not suffer from being overweight. It also has a significant calcium content, much needed during periods of breastfeeding, pregnancy and growth in children. It is low in sodium and high in potassium which makes it very suitable for hypertensive patients. It aids in the recovery of diarrheal diseases for its astringent properties and having no cholesterol, gluten or lactose, is suitable

for those with intolerances. However, horchata is not advisable for diabetic patients because of its high sugar content. Gazpacho, another one of the kings of summer, retains all the nutritional benefits of each and every one of its

ingredients without suffering any degradation by heat that is caused by cooking "Vitamin C in peppers and tomato, vitamin E in the tomatoes and extra virgin olive oil, antioxidants such as

lycopene from tomatoes, vitamins for summer sun and also takes care of our skin, " lists nutritionist Carolina Perez. It is full of fibre, which promotes intestinal transit and promotes cleansing of our body. Also it contains minerals such as phosphorus, iron, calcium, magnesium, zinc, copper, potassium and sodium. That is why gazpacho is regarded as an isotonic drink because of its water content and mineral salts. Gazpacho also helps reduce blood pressure. "Consumption of the main natural ingredients of gazpacho is linked to a reduction in blood pressure. Hypertension is a condition that affects 25% of the adult population and is the main risk factor for heart attacks and strokes. Finally, another soft drink that is experiencing a boom, especially among athletes are sports drinks, which promote athletic performance and quickly help replenish losses caused by intense exercise. Its contribution in water prevents dehydration, the concentration of carbohydrates (6-8%) is effective to maintain fluid balance, provide energy, maintain blood glucose levels and accelerate the absorption of water. Electrolytes help maintain fluid balance, nerve function and muscle contraction. While many experts agree that if exercise lasts less than an hour, even in intense and warm atmosphere, it is sufficient to hydrate by drinking water before, during and after exercise.

Spanish wines the toast of this year’s Vinexpo This year’s guest nation at Vinexpo, one of the world’s leading wine fairs, was Spain. In the French city of Bordeaux, around 100 Spanish wineries attended the four-day biannual event, along with more than 2,300 other producers from 40 countries around the world. “Being such close neighbors, Spain has always had an important presence here,” says Guillaume Deglise, the trade fair’s general director, adding: “But this year we wanted to focus more indepth on Spanish wines.” Deglise highlights the diversity, tradition and contemporary language of Spain’s wineries: “There is a lot of creativity, in terms of wine-making and marketing and labeling. What’s more, in Spain there is an intimate link between wine and gastronomy that is even stronger than in France.” One of the highlights of Vinexpo was A Taste of Spain, organised in conjunction with the prestigious Wine Spectator magazine, an event that was the

largest ever tasting of Spanish wines outside Spain. Along with many of the country’s finest wines, a team of 12 chefs, led by Spanish celebrities Ferran Adriá and José Andrés, was on hand to prepare dishes to accompany the tasting. “In the 1970s, France was the role model to follow, it was an inspiration. Now, after many years of hard work, Spain has improved in all aspects: it has positioned itself as a global gastronomic benchmark. And wines are closely linked to food,” said José Andrés, who owns a restaurant chain in the US. In the last five years, Spanish wine exports have increased by 43percent in terms of volume, and have seen a 21percent rise in sales. “Spain exports more than anybody else, but it is third in terms of earnings,” says Rafael Rey, who heads Spain’s Wine Market Observatory. He explains that the country sells huge amounts of wine wholesale. This is one of Spain’s strong points, but at the same time, one of its weak spots: wines are cheap, giving the

country an unbeatable pricequality ratio. “We don’t produce enough wines that sell at good prices,” says Pedro Ballesteros, Spain’s only Master of Wine, belonging to an institute made up of 340 members from 28 countries. At the same time, he says the country should do more to promote the many different types of wines it produces: “Spain has a huge variety that has been overshadowed by the regions of Castilla-La Mancha and Rioja.” Lafou Celler is a winery from Tarragona, in Spain’s northeastern Catalonia region, that attended Vinexpo. This is not the first time the company has come here, but it was one of the better years. “We have returned because we were here in 2015 and we did a lot of business,” says the winery’s manager, Ramón Roquetas. “What’s more, this was a special year,” he adds, noting: “We can’t always rely on the support that being from the guest country provides.”

Cigarette companies under fire Four cigarette-producing giants could face sanctions for alleged price pacts and information sharing uncovered by the National Markets and Competition Commission (CNMC). Philip Morris, which manufactures its own-branded cigarettes and also Marlboro, Chesterfield and L&M; Altadis, which makes Fortuna, Ducados and Nobel; JT, behind the brands Winston and Camel, and British American Tobacco, the owners of Lucky Strike and Pall Mall are all accused of ‘possible anticompetition practices’ including market information-sharing and swapping details of manufacturing, distribution and sales. The delivery company Logista is also implicated. Breaking anti-competition legislation – including Article 1 of Law 15/2007 of 3rd July, covering Protection of Competition, and Article 101 of the European Union's Treaty of Functioning - could mean the companies in question being fined up to 10 percent of the profits made in the last tax year, says the CNMC, which works to ensure healthy competitive markets in Spain. Inspections carried out between 28th February and 2nd March this year have thrown up what the CNMC's chairman José María Marín Quemada calls ‘reasonable indications’ of a breach of competition laws. The CNMC has 18 months to investigate and pass a verdict.

Cheaper to fly from Newcastle to London via Menorca than take the train A British man took a flight to Menorca, hired a car and ordered a cocktail on his way to London from Newcastle – and still saved 40 pounds (€48) on his trip. Joe Furness, 21, successfully showed how public transport in the UK is probably the most expensive in the world with his adventure, which started when he looked up the price of a train to get him to the British capital from his home town in Newcastle. Even taking advantage of the various money-saving deals and young persons' railcard discounts, the cheapest he could find for a one-way ticket for was 78.50 pounds, or about €90. So instead, he booked a flight from Newcastle to Mahón, Menorca, costing him 16 pounds

(around €19) and, once there, hired a car for 7.50 pounds (about €9) and stopped in a beach bar for a ‘sex on the beach’ cocktail, costing him four pounds (€4.80). Next, he returned the car and caught a flight to London from Mahón, costing him 11 pounds (approximately €13.20). Joe's total spend was 38.48 pounds, or just under €46 – less than half the cost of the train fare and with an evening out on a Spanish beach thrown in. He posted a photo of himself on the Menorca beach on Instagram detailing the prices. “I can have a night out on a Spanish island, hire a car, have a cocktail on the beach, fly back to London and still have 40 pounds left over...or, I could have sat on a

train,” Joe wrote. “What would you rather have done?” He tagged Thomas Cook holidays, with whom he booked the flights, and Virgin Trains, in his post. Joe's tale almost mirrors that of two young women who had become friends at university and wanted to meet up just after Christmas two years ago, but found it was cheaper for them to do so in Málaga – including a twonight hotel stay, a third night in Granada and a visit to the Alhambra Palace, plus food, drinks and overland transport – than to catch a train between Birmingham and Newcastle, their home cities.

Tiger mosquito takes root The insect was first detected in the region in 2010 and originated in SE Asia and since then its population, a carrier of numerous illnesses, has been expanding along the Mediterranean coastline. In the flower pots on the ninth floor flat in the centre of Cartagena, in the waters accumulated in a thrown away bottle top next to some water sprinklers in a park in Murcia, and in the remains of an emptied bucket when mopping the patio in Orihuela Costa, are some of the places where the tiger mosquito can found. Researchers from the Zoological and Anthropology Department of Murcia University, Francisco Collantes and Juan Antonio Delgado, have found the larvae of the tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) in numerous places. This feared insect needs only the smallest place to reproduce. The female is capable of putting some 200 eggs over one week in a very small place. Three things she needs - stagnant water, over 28º C, and victims close by for a regular supply of human or animal blood. It first appeared on the Mediterranean in 2004 in Barcelona, and since then it has followed the A-7 motorway on cars with destinations either side of the said motorway. It is calculated that every year some 800,000 tiger mosquitoes stowaway on vehicles. When it appeared in the local region, seven years ago, it remained given the consistently warmer temperatures ideal for breeding. According to professor Collantes, this year its presence has been confirmed in several municipalities. ‘in Águilas, Mazarrón, Cartagena, Murcia, Alcantarilla, Torres de Cotillas, Molina de Segura and San Pedro del Pinatar, we have obtained evidence of larvae, and we expect sightings soon in Bullas, Totana, Abanilla. Lorca, Librilla, Ceutí and Lorquí. A positive sighting means the tiger mosquitoes are arriving in force’ Its reproductive cycle in the region is longer than in other areas because of the heat. It starts in April and is dominant over the summer, July, August and September and continues into October when the cold causes its eradication ‘but if our autumn is warmer - we can expect some to survive until November’. The dangerous of this invading species radiates from the sting and in hotter climes if can spread contagions of Zika, Dengue or Chikungunya viruses.

Dan via email asks: Hi Aunty, every time I go on the internet a warning comes up saying, "your Windows license will expire soon". I go to the settings and put in my product key which is on the bottom of my laptop, but it says it is not valid. I was on windows 7 (I think), but took advantage of the free windows 10 upgrade about 18 months ago. I`ve been on the internet looking for a fix and tried a good few, but to no avail. Any help would be gratefully accepted. Aunty Says: Hi Dan. If you definitely have a valid Windows 7 license sticker/key then you should be able to reactivate your copy of Windows 10. If entering the 25 digit number doesn’t work then you can maybe try the built in support chat feature that come with Windows 10. If you type CONTACT SUPPORT into the search box (near your Start icon) you can access the app and explain exactly what you have told me and you should get sorted. They may ask if it’s OK for them to temporarily have remote access to your computer which is fine as it is a secure chat connection that you have initiated; just to be clear, if you ever get a phone call from someone supposedly from Microsoft asking for access to your computer then that is definitely a scam so tell them you live in a tent and don’t have a computer.

Technology

Frank from Catral asks: I am going to uninstall MacAfee from my computer as it is taking forever to startup and coincidently it is the only program that I have installed in the last 6 months. I have Malwarebytes and Spybot so do you think they will be enough to keep me safe? I do a fair bit of stuff on Ebay and Amazon and I do all my banking in the internet these days.

I have Windows 10 and a Lenovo laptop. Aunty Says: Hi Frank. It’s quite sad really because MacAfee used to be a great free antivirus program, but it does seem to have gone the same way as a lot of

65

them and now it loads a lot of unwanted additional junk on your computer which can slow startup and surfing down to a crawl. You will still need an antivirus program to run alongside your two antispyware programs so activate the built in Windows Defender which came bundled with Windows 10. Once you’ve removed MacAfee, type DEFENDER into the search box and the app should appear in the list. Tony via email asks: I have just replace my tower with a new laptop with Windows 10 and I seem to have a problem with my Canon MG Wi-Fi printer. When I try to print I keep getting a “Printer Offline" message but I have tried everything that I can think of. Everything worked fine with my Windows 7 PC. Aunty Says: Hello Tony. Wi-Fi printing is still in its infancy but I’ve found 99% of the time, downloading the latest software for your printer from the support section of the manufacturer’s website (www.canon.co.uk) will fix things. Let me know how you get on. Email your questions to auntyvirus@costablancapeople.com and I will see you all next week

Driving in the heat Stay Safe This Summer For those who are new to Spain the spring and summer weather become very hot and there are certain things that you should be aware of. Always wear sun glasses, not just when it is bright sun, because the glare can obliterate cyclists and pedestrians or builder grey coloured cars. If you have prescription glasses for driving then the sun glasses must also be prescription. It is more comfortable to have plastic lenses because the weight can be uncomfortable on a long journey. If you have an open topped car then wear a hat. Always, whatever the car, have a bottle of water with you because dehydration comes on very quickly leaving you vulnerable. I repeat my advice to owners of classic vehicles that they should only have coolant or waterless coolant and never have only water because your oldie will overheat. Electric ignition helps keep down temperature making sure your plugs are in good

condition.. The SEAT 600 has three different sizes of pully for the fan and circulation and the medium size can also help. For other vehicles check that something like this is available to you. Check hoses and change oil plus filter and air filter to keep it breathing easily. Tyres must be checked. The law in Spain is that you should not drive more than 200kms or 2 hours without a stop. This is a good law and helps you to cool down as well as your old vehicle. I average about 500 kms a day in my 750cc powered 600 never leaving before 10.00pm and always getting to my hotel by 5.00am. This includes coffee stops and lunch stop as well as finding our way without a sat nav. It would be a good idea to read our two helpful information sheets on driving in Spain. SEAT shows the Arona for the first time from the air * The public gets its first glimpse of the new crossover hanging from a helicopter 300 metres above the ground * The Arona is being presented today in Barcelona as part of the largest product offensive in the history of SEAT Flying through the air suspended from a cable attached to a helicopter. This is how SEAT showed off its new creation, the Arona, for the first time. And the feat took place in Barcelona, the brand's home town, where the compact crossover has gone from being a sketch to a full-fledged vehicle. Dangling over the city's beachfront, residents and bathers alike were treated to this surprising aerial exhibition and got a glimpse of the car's silhouette, which was ultimately revealed this week. A crossover 300 metres above the sea The Arona spent an hour flying parallel to the Barcelona coastline. Dangling from a 20 metre long cable from a helicopter moving at 80 km/h, the new model hugged the shoreline 300 metres above sea level. From Barcelona to the world This crossover is created in Barcelona: it was designed, developed and manufactured in the company's facilities in Martorell. Precisely for this reason, the brand wanted the residents of the city to be the first to get a look at its latest creation before taking it to the 80 countries where SEAT exports 81% of its

output. Preview to its worldwide presentation The general outline of the new Arona was hinted at from a distance, but the details of its design was not revealed until later in the afternoon, at the teaser event held in Barcelona for journalists from all over the World. Following its international presentation in September at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the Arona will be reaching dealerships at the end of the year. An urbanite exploring new territories, the Arona will be the company's first model to explore the constantly growing

This weekend saw the first of the four special operations on the roads of Spain where the network will be stretched to the limit, as summer holidaymakers move through the country´s roads. The summer period sees many inland residents move to the coastal and mountainous regions to enjoy their holidays, usually in two or four week blocks. Therefore, there will be four specific operations during the summer, which coincide with these blocks, as well as every weekend during July and August. The aim of the operations are to ensure the safety and fluidity of traffic on the roads. It is expected that during July and August, 89 million trips will be carried out by road, which represents 4 million more movements by road (+ 4.6%) compared to the displacements that occurred last summer. This forecast places the number of journeys similar to those recorded in 2008. Of the 89 million forecast, 43.5 million will occur in July and 45.5 million in the month of August. We have had the first operation this weekend, where the first batch of tourists came away from the inland cities to the coast. The second operation, named “Operation 1 August”, is from Friday 28 July to Tuesday 2 August. In this phase, many more tourists come from the inland areas, but some of those who have been on holiday return, so there is traffic flowing in both directions. segment of the compact crossovers. A trio of all-roaders: The new crossover is the second pillar of SEAT's range of allroaders together with the Ateca, which was presented last year, and the future large SUV, whose name remains a mystery, scheduled for launch in 2018. With the Arona, the company is making progress with its largest product offensive to date, following the Ibiza and the Leon

The third operation, named “Operation 15 August”, is from Friday 11 to Tuesday 15 August, which follows similar characteristics, and then the final phase, “Operation Return”, which runs from Thursday 31 August to Sunday 3 September, where the remaining holidaymakers go back inland, thus reversing the flow of traffic away from the coast. During the two months, there will be four intensive surveillance campaigns operating, with a focus on motorcycles, inappropriate speed, vehicle conditions

and alcohol and other drugs. During the first intensified campaign, motorcycles will be the main focus, this campaign will operate through this coming weekend, on the 8th and 9th of July. Motorcycles will be monitored for unsafe driving, such as inappropriate speed or overtaking in prohibited areas, as well as the general maintenance of their vehicles and documentation. Riders will also be checked for alcohol and drugs. Amongst the most vulnerable road user groups, motorcyclists often come off worse in collisions, hence campaigns such as “Think once, think twice, think bike”, but motorcyclists must also extend respect to other road users by driving in a safe manner at all times, hence the awareness and safety campaign this weekend. Pegasus equipped helicopters will be supporting ground patrols throughout, and with 20,000 operatives looking after road safety, including 6,000 traffic officers from the Guardia Civil, the watchful eyes will be evident by their presence. As for the future campaigns, between the 17th and 23rd of July, the attention will turn to vehicle standards, ensuring the safety and maintenance of vehicles on the roads, especially older ones, and around the weekend of the 15th of August, attention will focus on alcohol and drugs, as this coincides with an increase in the number of summer parties being held. Finally, during the week of the 21st of August, speed checks will increase. Mark Nolan

Zenia Services leads the way For many years Zenia Services has been offering reputable property lettings, maintenance and complementary services across the southern Costa Blanca and it is now leading the way by offering new evacuation safety grills – which could not be more at the forefront of people’s concerns following the horrendous Grenfell Tower fire. Grills on windows are a compulsory requirement of many insurance policies in Spain, in order to prevent break-ins and opportunistic thefts. However, should doorways be blocked by fire then these safety grills can affectively become prison bars, keeping people trapped in rather than undesirables out. Not being able to escape through windows in an emergency could be life threatening – but Zenia Services can solve this problem. Zenia Service experts Neil Couzens and Lee Keely can transform your security grill into a secure safety grill by adding hinges to the existing structure. The hinges allow the grill to be opened from the inside and as an added security feature the mechanism cannot be seen from the outside, giving the evacuation grill the same appearance as any other grill. The safety grills lock from the inside and can be quickly and easily unlocked by key. Neil said: “Unfortunately fires can and do happen. UK safety regulations say houses must have windows that open fully to allow for escape in the case of a fire and these grills offer that same peace of mind.” Zenia Services can also give your tired

Before

After

grills a new lease of life, sprucing up the kerb appeal of you property ideal for a summer clean or pre-sale makeover. The team will uninstall and collect your grills. This can be done even if the grills are built into the wall. These are then sandblasted to remove the old paint and rust and then powder coated in a colour of your choice. This can be done to grills of all shapes and sizes; providing the rust has not damaged the integrity of the metal; although most damage can be repaired. Even better, the service can be completed on any metal object from ornaments to home and garden furniture. Zenia Blinds, another facet of Zenia Services, is also offering fantastic must-

have summer services such as mosquito blinds and general shutter and persiana repairs. The majority of repairs can be carried out within 24 hours and on the maintenance side a same day boiler service is also available. Mosquito blinds make a huge difference to everyday living during the summer months, particularly with the increase of the Tiger Mosquito in the local area. Zenia Blinds is a leading manufacturer of mosquito blinds and these blinds also have added benefits. For hayfever sufferers Zenia Blinds mosquito blinds actually stop pollen from entering the home and they also stop all unwanted bugs, including cockroaches from getting in. There is no job too big or small for Zenia Services and work is guaranteed. For an unbeatable, affordable and friendly service call Neil and the team on 659 763 517 or Visit: www.zeniaservices.com Email: info@zeniaservices.com.

Almost ready to re-open For those who have been making do with the Virgen del Carmen Theatre for their performances, it will come as a relief to have the Municipal Theatre so close to opening once more. According to the Mayor, José Manuel Dolón, all that’s outstanding is an architect’s signature and we should be good to go for the town’s main theatre. Since it closed performances have been confined to the Virgen del Carmen with its much smaller capacity. The mayor announced on 28th June that the deficiencies previously identified at the Municipal Theatre had been addressed. ‘All the concerns about safety, evacuation, the electrics and the curtain have been dealt with and now we are just waiting for the final licences to be obtained,’ said the mayor. The theatre was closed because it had

never been given the certificate for the end of works or licence for the activities it was built to host. The current governing parties blame the previous administration of the PP for neglecting to ensure that the necessary final inspections were carried out and the licences issued. A report that detailed the deficiencies arrived at the town hall one day before the new government was elected. It was left to them to take remedial action. The architect responsible for the building must sign the paperwork. At this point the end of work certificate can be issued followed by the opening licence. This will then allow the theatre to begin catering once more for the local performers who are keen to return to its stage. Suzanne O’Connell

Tales from the Top Flight ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

It turns out that Nemanja Matic really, really liked having Jose Mourinho as his manager at Chelsea and is well on his way to moving to Manchester United for £40m. I know, I know, the European market is swamped with players (a) better than Matic, (b) better priced than Matic and (c) well, just better than Matic but Jose likes what he knows, and he wants an upgrade in midfield and Matic is the man. Will the big Serb be able to unlock the potential in Paul Pogba? Jesus, we have to wait quite a few weeks before that question can be answered. So that’s £40m more than likely done, but Jose will have to beg Ed Woodward for another £180m if he wants to sign Harry Kane. Yeah right, like Daniel Levy is going to turn down £80m for a centre-forward. Still, Manchester United didn’t get the last classic English number 9 on the market because he wanted to play for his hometown club, so will Harry Kane stay true to his heart like Alan Shearer did? There’s some crazy talk going on about Arsenal swapping their Alexis Sanchez for Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero. It kind of makes sense the more you think about it. Which is the exact reason Arsene Wenger will not go for it. More likely to happen is Olivier Giroud replacing Alexandre Lacazette at Lyon, meaning the net cost of Lacazette coming in at around £20m which starts to sound like a bit of a bargain. If Liverpool target Naby Keita does get

his own way and is allowed to leave RB Leipzig, it will be for a far-from-a-bargain fee of £80m or so. Keita is a class player, but he is not an £80m class player just yet meaning that Liverpool will probably stump up the cash having thought it over for a few weeks. Liverpool have also turned down an £11m bid from Napoli for their Spanish “left-back” Alberto Moreno. Someone at Liverpool seems to think that Moreno is worth £15m, whereas the rest of the world would have shaken Napoli’s hand when the £1 was written down, let alone the other £14,999,999. Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino could well be about to do what Arsene Wenger used to do and pinch one of Barcelona’s starlets and convince them that life in London is better than in the Catalan city. The supremely talented Carles Alena is on Poch’s shopping list and he might be able to get a deal done for £2.6m. Carles Alena might be good, but he is no Victor Wanyama. The midfield brick shithouse has just been named Kenya’s most influential sportsman and, if you could even try and top that, has had a street named after him in Tanzania. That is quite a good Monday by anybody’s standards. Hey Chelsea, have you noticed everyone seems to have started doing some business? Antonio Conte is still waiting to hear that the board have made progress on Leonardo Bonucci, Alex Sandro, Dani Alves and pretty much the rest of the Juventus team. You know what they say Antonio, no news is good

news. Mind you, try telling that to Arsenal fans. I never realised Selhurst Park had any form of attachment to the Vatican, but Crystal Palace announced the arrival of Frank de Boer as their new manager by sending white smoke signals out from a Carribean takeaway. Whoa there, stop the bus? Claudio Bravo, who failed to stop a shot aimed at him for all of January, managed to stop three penalties last night? That’s it, I am officially blaming Pep Guardiola for the downfall of this guy. It must be Pep’s tactics, as it is clear that all City have to do now if they ever play Bravo in a game again, is to concede penalties rather than let anyone shoot in open play. Simple. I’ll send my invoice to the Etihad later today. Tales might have called the fact that England U21’s were showing the England U20’s the roadmap for their international careers, and it turns out that losing to Germany on penalties is still very much in the futures of any wannabe player for the Three Lions. Aidy Boothroyd’s side should have been 3-0 up in the first half, yet found themselves clinging on to a 2-2 draw after extra time. Tammy Abraham, probably still knackered from chasing the aimless balls to the front for 120 minutes wilted first under the national expectation of guaranteed defeat. I can imagine the internal dialogue as the big striker sauntered up to the penalty spot. “You’ve got this, just hit it hard, be a hero and maybe even Antonio will notice I exist. Whatever you do, don’t copy Gareth Southgate’s effort, nobody wants to see

San Miguel Golf Society Thirty-five members were joined by 4 guests for SMGS’s annual visit to La Manga to play a stableford competition. In excellent condition (the exception being some of the bunkers), as one would expect of a venue with La Manga’s history and continued reputation, the South Course proved testing for many. The two main reasons for this were probably the course’s length and some difficult approaches, not helped by an ever strengthening wind which by round’s end wasn’t far removed from being a gale. As during our previous visit, scores got better as one went up through the categories, lower handicappers generally dealing much better with the course and conditions. As if to highlight the

point the day’s best rounds of 37 points were posted by Norman Cahill (Silver), Jamie Rorison (Gold) and Gary Garbett (Gold), with Bronze category winner Ron Stenhouse being a mere 9 back. The day’s competition results, by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 4th Marg Birtwistle (26 on CB), 3rd Mick Roscoe (26 on CB), 2nd Brian Butler (27), and 1st Ron Stenhouse with 28 points. Silver Category: 4th Theo Boelhouwer (30), 3rd Phil de Lacy (31), 2nd Paul Kelsall (35) and 1st Norman Cahill with 37 points. Gold Category: 4th Barry Roehrig (34 on CB), 3rd Tony Sims (34 on CB), 2nd Jamie Rorison (37 on CB), and 1st Gary Garbett, also

with 37. Nearest the pins on the par 3’s (open to all) went to Tony Sims (holes 2 and 17), Steve Belshaw (5) and Ken Flaherty (12). The Abacus was won by Mike Fearnehough. The best guest prize was won by zero handicapper Jamie Jones, who must have enjoyed playing off the yellows, coming in with 35 points. Our thanks go to the staff at La Manga golf course for their contribution to an enjoyable day. Keep up to date with all SMGS matters by logging on to our website www.smgs.org or simply give Captain Theo Boelhouwer a call on 694494824 to find out more about the society and its weekly golf get-togethers. Next week we will be at La Finca.

that again…..” Oh. Sure, Abraham is where I vented my fury. He is a centreforward for crying out loud, these boys should live for scoring penalties. Would Alan Shearer have missed? No. Harry Kane? Hell no. Teddy Sheringham? Uh huh. Gary Lineker? Only if it meant levelling Sir Bobby Charlton’s record. I know Nathan Redmond missed too, but the damage had been done. Manchester City are believed to be confident of signing Alexis Sanchez. I can understand Pep Guardiola’s confidence. I mean, City could win something next season which will appeal to the Chile international who is now in line to win the Confederations Cup. City have a top manager, something that is missing in Sanchez’s club life. And City have the money and are prepared to spend it, unlike Arsenal who have the money but pretend they are prepared to spend it. Arsene Wenger is lining up several players to say no to him, as we know, but front of the queue is Thomas Lemar. Monaco are likely to let several of their Ligue One winning side go this summer, but Lemar is not going to be one of them apparently, and certainly not to Arsenal for £31m, proving that there is very little justice in this world. In fact, this world is a place where Bournemouth can afford to spend £20m on a Chelsea reserve team player and someone like Nathan Ake, albeit talented with some potential, is worth £20m. I hate modern football. Barcelona have started to freak out

Hector Bellerin by suggesting that they might just go and sign Cedric Soares from Southampton. This will no doubt give Mauricio Pellegrino a real induction as to what life is like on the South Coast and also lead to Hector WhatsApping Arsene to say he’d like to go now, please. Arsene knows he has to ship some players out, but it looks like the only ones leaving are the ones he wants to keep, just like old times. Laurent Koscielny is thought to be a target for AC Milan who are desperate to return to some credible transfer dealings having signed Fabio Borini from Sunderland. Everton continue to be busy, with Ronald Koeman pipping West Ham and Arsenal to the post that is Henry Onyekuru. The Belgian striker has joined for around £7m but due to that pesky work permit thing will be loaned out to Anderlecht for the season. Still, Everton fans can console themselves with the fact that bookmakers have stopped taking bets on Burnley’s Michael Keane moving to Goodison Park. Frank Lampard is believed to be about to mud-wrestle Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink for the privilege of being the next Oxford United manager. My money is on JFH, every time. To win the mud-wrestle that is, not to be the better manager. Finally today, Liverpool’s new signing Mohamed Salah has answered the question that has not been on anyone’s lips ever – who is the greatest Egyptian? The mere fact that I have mentioned it probably gives you a clue as to the egofuelled answer.

Total Bedlam – Fifth SAMM Race Day When the competitors and officials arrived at CTD for the fifth race day in the SAMM Spring Series 2017 they were greeted by a scene of total bedlam. Hoards of disable children were being treated to a host of water sport activities generously provided by various organisations. The was loud music, kids dancing, playing ball games, shouting, screaming whilst the various water craft were being launched and readied. When the buoys were being laid to mark the course they had to be moved three times to avoid the ever enlarging area being used by the jet skis for joy rides. Eventually the first race got underway at a late 11.45am in gentle 6 to 8 knot winds with six boats in contention. All other than Sirocco had a leisurely sail of four laps, except for having to avoid the jet skis, kids in Optimist dinghies, kids in kayaks, groups on large ribs or in Gamba dinghies and none of them paid any attention to the fact that there was a race going on and used the start/finish line to play around. Then, as a finale, they were joined by a guy performing stunts on a water jet flyboard right in front of the channel as the boats came ashore for the lunch

break. But everything was over, except for a couple of jets skis, by the start of the second race which again was fairly leisurely but in a slightly increased wind. There were some close tussles going on, especially between Norman in his Laser Radial, John in his Quba and George and Jack in the Gamba Shoestring Cuatro, who all finished within a minute of each other. The Areaz 20 Levanter, a new boat to the fleet led all the way and finished first on the water but was placed 4th after the handicaps were applied. A good day which was enjoyed by all who took part and the last of the spring season. The autumn season is scheduled to start on September 10th.

Winners Race 6

After handicaps were applied, the winners of the first race were Jack, Bob and Jeff in the Gamba ‘Shoestring Cuatro’. The second race was won by John in the RS Quba ‘Lola’.

Your week in Sport ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

A week is a long time in sport, as the saying goes. A week ago it was doom and gloom for the Lions as they lost the 1st Test in New Zealand. Seven days later and the series goes to a decider at Eden Park courtesy of a thrilling victory over the All Blacks. It might have been a little bit wet and windy, but the Lions won an engaging contest 24-21 albeit playing against 14 for the majority of the game. Sonny Bill Williams became only the third All Black in history to be sent from the field of play, with the Lions’ Sean O’Brien being slightly more fortunate, being cleared after the match having been cited. Warren Gatland was a “happier clown” by the end, commenting on the reception he has been getting in his homeland. The proper cricket gets underway this week with England welcoming South Africa to Lord’s for the 1st Test of the summer. I know, it’s July already. It feels wrong. Gary Ballance has been recalled and is likely to bat at three with the new skipper, Joe Root, dropping down to four which is the first sign of some common sense in the new regime. Hopefully we can see the early version of Ballance at Lords, not the crab caught in front of his wicket time and time again that we came to see towards the end of his second spell. Moving back to that white ball stuff, you’ll be able to watch some cricket free of charge in 2022 if you (a) live in

England and (b) they don’t move the goalposts on license fees and all that. The ECB have given the BBC some of the Twenty20 tournament in five years time which makes almighty assumptions around there being any interest in T20 in five years time and whether we will even be watching

cricket on television by then. I mean, it might be by hologram or something. Not that the BBC will be that advanced, of course. Surrey managed to lose their third

One Day final in a row at Lord’s on Saturday. When Mark Stoneman carried his bat for a 144 not out, the Surrey opener could have been forgiven for thinking it was his day. Er, no. England’s Alex Hales, surely now to be considered one of the finest white ball batsmen ever, broke the following records in the Notts chase - 52 years ago Geoff Boycott scored 146 for Yorkshire against Surrey in a final. Hales now has the quickest domestic final hundred in England, off just 83 balls. He then beat David Boon’s 166, the highest one day score at Lords before breaking his own one day best of 171. Finally, he knocked off team mate Michael Lumb’s 184 as the highest A-List score before ending the day 187 not out. I wonder what Sam Curran was thinking watching this, having dropped a dolly at cover when Hales was on a mere 9. England Women got back into the habit of winning, comfortably seeing off Sri Lanka by 7 wickets. The Women’s

tournament is far too close to call, so by this time next week I might be able to actually tell you something insightful. Jeff Horn beating Manny Pacquiao is being spoken of as one of the greatest shocks boxing has ever seen. The Australian wowed his home crowd in Brisbane, taking a unanimous points decision and becoming only the second fighter ever to beat the legendary Pacquiao. A big ticket rematch is expected. What else is there? Ah, yes the small matter of Wimbledon. Sir Andy Murray is fit, praise the Lord. Fit yes. Competitive? We shall see. Muzza claims his hip will last seven matches, but whether he has seven matches at Wimbledon ahead of him is anybody’s guess. Johanna Konta isn’t looking much better either, as she heads to the tournament in mixed form. My money would be on Heather Watson going the furthest of all the Brits this year. John McEnroe is in trouble for giving an honest answer to an honest question. When asked, yet again, how Serena Williams would do in the men’s game, Mc replied she’d be ranked outside the top 700. Now, he went on to say how great Williams was and all that, but hey nobody is interested in the common sense in what he said. It’s all about controversy, right? Either way, McEnroe and Wimbledon will dominate the next fortnight. The Tour de France has got going with Geraint Thomas winning the first stage. Unless there is a drug scandal, I’m really not interested.

ROCKETS GOLF SOCIETY ALTORREAL Long trip down to Murcia for our June away day, but looking at the course when we arrived it was a picture. Very depleted this week. Do not know if it was the travel or the 38 degrees that put them off. They missed a beautiful course with exceptionally fast greens, getting back to the condition we knew this course was in years ago. The Gold Category was won by Dom Downey with Larry Lambe taking second place(, He said he was Speachless!) and Rodney Smith taking 3rd place. In the Silver Category Geoff Wild came in first after a barren spell with Tom Richardson coming in Second Followed by Pete Daggatt in 3rd place. MATCH FISHING REPORT

ABBEY ANGLING

This week’s 6th round of the Summer Series was fished at the El Bosquet Complex on the 27th June, and was fished on pegs 1 to 16. With a few short showers and thunder in the distance, we thought we might be in for a soaking, but fortunately it held off. Alan Smith took the top spot on the bread, with a total of 37 fish for a bag of over 34kgs; I was drawn on the adjacent peg with a total catch of 57 fish all smallish for just under 24kgs and not on par with Alan’s top weight. The top weight off the oblong was

taken by Neil McBirnie with just under 22kgs for the 3rd place. 1st Alan Smith with 34.460kgs fishing the monkey using bread 2nd Terry Screen with 23.400kgs fishing the pole using hard pellet 3rd Neil McBirnie with 21.460kgs fishing the pole using bread and pellet There are still some vacancies available for membership at the club All details are available on our new website abbeyangling.es or from me on

The water is now receding at an alarming rate, and according to the ladders by the twin towers has dropped at least 12 to 15 inches in the last week, but the fish are still feeding well and the depth is shallow with only about 4 foot to fish in. I seem to have recovered a little bit of my form, following being caught on camera fast asleep in my car last week suffering from a chest infection (Thanks Neil!!), and managed this week to take top spot with over 30kgs. Bill Reade and Richard Wood had a good battle for 2nd and 3rd place with just a kilo separating them at the end of the match. 1st Terry Screen with 30.350kgs fishing the monkey using pellet hemp and tares 2nd Bill Reade with 22.580kgs fishing the feeder and pole using hemp and pellet 3rd Richard Wood with 21.860kgs fishing the method feeder and pellet There are still some vacancies at the Club and if anyone is interested in joining please contact Bill Reade on 966790416 TIGHT LINES Terry Screen
