Hit and run driver arrested The driver accused of a fatal hit and run incident in Catral has been arrested by Guardia Civil after allegedly fleeing the scene.
P
olicia Local in Almoradí located the vehicle involved in the collision after an alert was issued by Guardia Civil. The car was parked in a street in Almoradí and after cross checking DGT traffic information, the likely whereabouts of the vehicle’s owner was established. The incident occurred on Sunday in Catral when a 78 year old man was knocked off his moped. He died from his injuries. The driver is said to have fled the scene before emergency services arrived to try to attend the victim, a resident of nearby town, Dolores. Later on Sunday, local police officers in Almoradí managed to locate the
vehicle - a black Audi TT – which was described by eyewitnesses as having left the scene of the fatal accident. Local police immediately contacted Guardia Civil to confirm the identity of the vehicle and its owner, a 29 year old identified only the initials M.M.S.,

BITE SIZE Continuing chaos NEWS: for the N332 Problems with cleaning contract
The Vela beach case continues The investigation into the Vela Mata case and Eduardo Dolón, previous mayor of Torrevieja, will continue according to the latest court announcement. Requests had been made that the case should be Continued on page 5
Over 40,000 vehicles a day use the N332 and the traffic jams can extend to six kilometres of frustrated drivers. The stretch of road that passes through Torrevieja cannot support the volume of traffic that uses it. The continuing political debate surrounding the widening of the road into a dual carriageway, does not help to ease the congestion that commuters and holidaymakers face every day. It is expected that the queues will be even worse this year than normal with record numbers of tourists expected. Many who use it are on their way to the beaches of Orihuela or are travelling further up the coast and do not wish to go through the town. Last weekend a jam of six kilometres was recorded between the sliproad to Hospital Quirón and access to Torrevieja hospital. Even when there is no queue, the traffic on this part of the road remains slow. This is partly as a result of measures taken to reduce accidents. This includes a prohibitionon overtaking on this stretch of the road and the use of flashing warning signs. It is an accident blackspot and there have been many serious accidents here over the past few years. Problems on the N332 have repercussion on other roads leading into and out of the town. There is often gridlock leading back from the sliproad by Carrefour and Ozone onto the CV-905 Crevillent road. This prevents traffic leaving the town and leads to
more congestion. A similar situation can be found in the area of Los Balcones and the CV-905. One possible method of alleviating the congestion problems would be to use the AP-7 which runs parallel to the N332 between South Torrevieja and Pilar de la Horadada. Whereas the N332 carries around 40,000 vehicles every day, the AP-7 is almost empty. However, the AP-7 is a toll road and only around 5,000 vehicles a day are recorded using it between Los Montesinos and la Zenia. Removing the toll at this point could encourage more traffic to use it and speed upthe journey on the N332. Suzanne O’Connell

The firm involved in cleaning the town hall buildings has not been paid for the last six months of 2016. This is according to a case that has been brought to court. Limcamar is the business that has been responsible for cleaning town hall offices and took the town hall to court to claim for €800,000 of unpaid fees. They are claiming that they delivered the service, worth €150,000 a month between August and December last year. However, there was no contract awarded for this and consequently the town hall has refused to makethe payments. However, it is claimed that cleaning of the town hall offices is an essential service that must be delivered with or without contracts and is now being paid for once more. There are around 100 different town hall buildings that must be cleaned and it was controversial too during the administration of the PP. Limcamar took over the cleaning in 2014 in spite of doubts about their ability to replace the original cleaning firm. Some arrangements with them had been carried out verbally rather than in a contracted form.

BITE SIZE NEWS:
Clearing up after the bonfires
Continued from page 3 dropped but the request has been overturned and the prosecutor has asked for new proceedings to take place. The case includes the allegations of irregularities in relation to the activities of the Vela night club. It is claimed that the club was open illegally between the summer of 2013 and 2015.
Glass recycling More than 240 restaurants and bars are participating in the campaign ‘Take note, recycle glass’. The councillors for business, the environment and hospitalityare taking part in this new attempt to protect the environment. New recycling points are going to be set up around the town added to those already in place. The campaign also aims to raise awareness amongst the town’s people. The campaign was presented on the 8th July by Roberto Fuentes from Ecovidrio along with Councillors Manuela Osuna and Fanny Serrano. A third of the glass recycled happens during the summer. Torrevieja is one of 74 of the participating towns in a national campaign to increase the amount of glass recycling. It is particularly important that the message gets through to the restaurants and bars which are responsible for around 50% of glass waste. Teams will visit hotels and similar establishments with new collection containers to help ensure as much is recycled as possible. Councillor Serrano wants to include events across the year that will draw attention to the need to recycle. According to the latest statistics Torrevieja recycled a total of 2,434,340 tonnes of glass which means that each person recycled on average 28.9kg. This number compares well against the national statistics of around 10.2 kg per person. Torreviejahas on average a glass recyclingcontainer for every 130 inhabitants. It isn’t only the hotel sector but the public in general who need to be more alert to the need to recycle glass.
The bonfires of San Juan night might be over but the residue that they have left behind is still evident on the beach of Los Náufragos. The organisers of the beach handball competition are asking for a deep clean to remove any remnants from the fires that were lit to celebrate the festival. Players and managers of the two Torrevieja handball teams, RayitoSalinero and Elite Salinera, have been busy collecting nails and screws from the sand, left behind as a result of planks of wood being burnt. These could be very
found on the beach buried a little below the surface in the area where they are training. Already there is reported to have been one injury experienced by a player in the children’s team. The councillor for beaches, Javier Manzanares, has agreed with the parents and players and apologised for any dangerous items found on the beach. He has explained that during the last few days the efforts of the cleaning company have intensified in the area. Torrevieja town hall has been clearing

dangerous for those taking part. The fires might have been two weeks ago on the 23rd June but people are still turning up remnants from the evening. This material is very dangerous for bathers and players alike who move around the beach barefoot. It’s not only the damage that these objects themselves could do. The metal has also been damaged by the flames, bringing a risk of infection with any cut. Of course, it’s not only the players who are at risk but also those enjoying the beach as usual. Concern has been raised because a handball championshipwas planned for the weekend of the 8th July with dozens of players attending.Players have been sharing on social media pictures of nails
up after the celebration of San Juan even though it does in fact take place on the coast which is presided over by the Ministry of the environment. It is them who should agree or prohibit the use of this area by thousands of people lighting dozens of bonfires. The problems with the nails occurs because many of the bonfires are fed by pallets of wood, from which the nails haven’t been removed and which are subsequently left exposed once the wood has burned away. One alternative is to place restrictions upon the wood used and require revellers to ensure that it is clean of objects such as nails and screws before burning them. Suzanne O’Connell
Clamp down on street traders With the summer season the street traders are out in force selling their illegal items on the paseos. The business association Apymeco are asking the town hall to clamp down again on those who pedal their wares illegally in the town centre. Apymeco is concerned at the unfairness for those who try to sell similar items but are also forced to pay their taxes. They feel that the town hall needs to do more to help protect their businessesas it is increasingly difficult for them to balance the books. The street vendors can be prosecuted if they are found not to have a licence to carry out their activities. They can also be Continued on page 6
New teachers to be hired across the province The Valencian Government is to assign a total of 792 new teachers next term to schools across the Alicante province, paid for with public funds. Primary classrooms will get 207 new teachers and Secondary and Professional Training will get 585. This increase is part of the Improvement Action Plan (PAM) to which over €84 million has been assigned, which supposes and increase of 29 percent on last year's PAM.
“Increasing investment in improving the quality of students’ education gives us a new boost to guarantee equal opportunities,” explained Education Councillor Vicent Marzà. The objective of the PAM is to develop intellectual, personal and social potential to reduce the rate of children leaving school prematurely, and to provide attention to compensate for inequalities in education.

attacking a 28 year-old man at the Rojales fiestas. The accused is a 34 year-old British man who was detained at the Courts in Torrevieja before appearing to make a declaration. It is believed that the man was here on holiday. Guardia Civil officers said the suspect was identified thanks to security cameras at the event and witnesses who were present when the incident happened. The brutal attack happened inside a kábila (fiesta bar) before dawn last Saturday when a man came up behind the victim and hit him. The victim, from San Fulgencio was talking to a girl at the time and the attack is thought to have been unprovoked. “Apparently, it all began with a discussion that started inside the pub, triggering the Briton to punch the other man who, after losing his balance, hit his head against the ground causing serious injuries,” says the Commanding officer in a statement. As a result of the attack the victim was taken to the Hospital of Torrevieja from where he was transferred to the private Intensive Care Unit at IMED Hospital in Elche and placed in an induced coma until it is known how his injuries are developing. He underwent an emergency operation to address a brain haemorrhage and doctors want to prevent any further bleeds by allowing the body to recuperate before reversing the coma. The victim remains in a serious condition after being punched in the head for reasons that are unclear.
before anyone could help or intervene the man was lying on the floor with what were quite obviously serious injuries. The next few days are vital to his progress, but he is in expert hands as the IMED hospital is a pioneer in neurosurgery techniques, which is why once his injuries were assessed he was transferred there. The Mayors of Rojales and San Fulgencio, Antonio Pérez and Carlos Ramírez, respectively, have visited the young man at the hospital to give encouragement to the family this week, together with councillors from both municipalities. There they were able to speak with the parents and the sisters of the young man. Antonio Perez said he was dismayed by the news of the attack and said that everyone at the Town Hall “regrets this unjustified, brutal aggression, that has occurred during the celebration of our holidays. We feel the families anguish very much, and show our solidarity with the relatives. We wish a speedy recovery and hopefully the Guardia Civil will soon prove they have the man responsible.” The Mayor also gave thanks for the rapid intervention of security forces and emergency services. Luckily these were in the immediate vicinity, just 60 metres away, thanks to the security arrangement made by the City Council for the fiestas. For his part, the Mayor of San Fulgencio, where the victim lives, has said that the young man is a wellknown figure in the town and that he actively participates in Holy Week and other festivities. The Mayor added: “He is a great guy, and I still cannot believe something like this can happen, that a young man goes out to have fun and ends up in hospital due to a senseless and brutal aggression. And from the Consistory we are at the disposal of the family for whatever it is they may need.” Mireille Toddington
prosecuted where they are found to be selling illegal, counterfeit goods.
Rain in July It is unusual to have any rain at all during July and August in Torrevieja so it was with surprise that many tourists and residents found themselves reaching for their brollies on Friday 7th July. Altogether it is estimated that six litres of rain fell in Torrevieja during the first hour of the morning. Rainfall was hardest in the south of the city with La Mata only recording 2 litres. The crowds that were missing from the beaches tended towards the shops instead and it could prove to be one of the busiest shopping days of the year for Habaneras.
Three chiringuitos ordered to close The town council in Torrevieja has ordered the closure of three beach bars or ‘chiringuitos’ without a licence. The bars were located between calaPiteras and Punta Prima and have been running for many years. They have been issued with a closure notice after it has been discovered that they do not have any type of authorisation to open. The bars are by the sea and have been running events which have annoyed those living close by. There is no record of any licence, including those issued by Valencia. The premises are on land which does not allow for this kind of activity. ‘It is inconceivable that people think they can establish a kiosk wherever they want,’ says Councillor Fanny Serrano. ‘They do not have any licence for works or use, nor do they have authorisation from the Costas and are on land that must not be developed.’ According to Información, at least one of the bars has been operating since 2007 and the other two from around 2012. They have opened and closed a few times but only once has a closure order been issued during that time. However, the order was never enforced. Suzanne O’Connell

Elderly British man on trial for San Miguel murder
Controversy over the new market site
The trial began this week of 75 year old Charlie Bevill-Warcup accused of ‘battering his 76-year-old English girlfriend Rosemary Broadwell to death' in San Miguel. The trial is being held at the Alicante
It might have sounded as though the choice of site for the new La Mata market was an easy decision to make. With 500 signatures backing the new site what could go wrong? However, not everyone is proving to be happy with the new location. Since the original signatures were presented, 140 of the 160 traders using the market have signed a letter rejecting the proposed location. Instead they suggest that a position further south of the town in the wider streets of la Avenida de Los Europeos would be better. This preference has been backed by signatures from 800 other traders based in the area. The argument is that moving the market further out of the centre would leave La Mata centre undisturbed and would attract more customers from the area between La Mata and Torrevieja. Reports from technicians would seem to
Provincial Audience – at its headquarters in Elche – over the incident which happened in September 2014. The Prosecution Service is asking for a sentence of 19 years in prison for murder. According to the prosecution, the
accused and the victim, both of them British, were practically living together in a house he owned in San Miguel (although Rosemary had a her own home in Quesada). It is alleged that after drinking alcohol, an argument started between them about money, which ended up with shouting and insults. At one point the victim went to the kitchen, where it is said she fell to the floor and was lying there face up without being able to get up. The accused took advantage of this situation to hit her repeatedly in the head with his walking stick. The victim died as a result of the blows. Two days later, the accused took her body to a remote spot in Algorfa and hid her with branches. The following day he reported her missing to the Guardia Civil. The man kept on pretending she had disappeared until March 2015, when he confessed. Police suspected from the start that Rosemary's disappearance had not been voluntary after neighbours told them they had heard a row the night before she was reported missing. Authorities searched mountains, lakes and dirt tracks over a vast area in the search for her. Bevill-Warcup had previously told detectives he had dropped her off outside a bank so she could withdraw money - but staff at the bank told police she had never entered the branch. Mireille Toddington
back this suggestion during a meeting with the councillor for markets, Javier Manzanares. The market sellers state that a move back to the centre of La Mata would cause the same difficulties as it caused previously and led to the initial move of site. There had been problems of accessibility, setting up the stalls and vulnerability to pickpockets who had more chances to escape undetected. These are some of the same reasons that led to Torrevieja’s market being resituated out of town. The Wednesday market needs to move from its current location in La Mata due to part of it being over the canal and declared unsafe. Whatever the eventual choice of location the market is considered to be an important part of La Mata life and will be maintained, wherever the final decision allows it to trade. Suzanne O’Connell

High rise plans continue Plans to build two skyscrapers in the zone of Acequión continue with the business behind the move currently campaigning and advertising the prospect. The tower blocks would be 26 floors high and would be opposite the sea off the Acequión beach. The proposal is being made by the business ‘Baraka’ owned by Trinitario Casanova and the company has approached the town hall with its plans. Trinitario Casanova is a multi-millionaire from Alicante. He was sentenced to a year in prison for inflating the value of Banco Popular shares by spreading false rumours about a future purchase. On the 4th July Councillor Fanny Serrano revealed that she was maintaining talks with Grupo Baraka and that they had expressed their wish to comply with all the requirements there would be. The tower block would be full of tourist apartments but would also be required to include a hotel of three or more stars. Torrevieja currently has little hotel provision and this is considered to be a requirement for the growth and development of the town. A third of the building would be dedicated to the hotel. Very few applications have been made to set up hotel provision in the last 30 yearsband Baraka publicity has suggested that it would be an aparthotel that would be on offer. The rooms would have kitchenettes and would
enable long-term occupation. The initial proposed name of the building has been changed from Torres Sinforosa to Torres Baraka. The plot where the flats would be built is already fenced off next to the Avenida de Gregorio Marañon and posters advertising the towers can be seen surrounding the plot. Ten years ago local laws were modified by the PP to enable construction of taller building in some ‘first line’ beach zones. At the moment there are no tower blocks in Torrevieja. In 1986 the height of buildings was restricted to six floors with the risk of earthquakes being one of the reasons that this limit was imposed. However, with improvements in construction materials it is believed that building higher is possible and safe in the zone. At the moment first line buildings are no taller than 10 to 15 floors high. Councillor Serrano explained that from the point of view of the government they were not able to oppose the building of this 94 metres high tower. However, they had expressed their concern about the appearance of the glass in its construction which could have a detrimental impact visually from the bay. The project is currently undergoing an environ-mental assessment and the detailed study must be approved for them to receive a licence. Suzanne O’Connell

WEEKLY EURO UPDATE Euro strength continued as the value of German bunds fell, making the single currency one of the week’s best performers. This was largely aided by an interesting development towards the end of the week, as further evidence emerged of the European Central Bank’s (ECB) increasing confidence in the eurozone’s recovery. It came from the release of the ECB’s June meeting notes, which showed that the central bank’s officials had discussed the removal of the reference to any future requirement to “step up the pace of bond-buying should the economy need more stimulation”. Naturally, euro investors warmed to this. Despite the more hawkish rhetoric from the Federal Reserve, economic numbers coming out of the US showed a more mixed picture. Private-sector job creation data didn’t live up to analysts’ expectations, with the 158,000
added jobs falling wide of the anticipated 185,000. At the same time, jobless claims crept northwards. As Treasury yields rose, the dollar came under some pressure. Geopolitical concerns were also heightened with Trump calling out North Korea on its missile testing, with tougher talk of ‘consequences’. US employment data released Friday 7 July was 222k stronger than expected, giving the dollar a welcome boost to end the week. Against sterling, the euro marched on. The pound weakened following some softer economic data releases: in addition to weak service sector growth and faltering optimism from domestic businesses, the UK’s trade deficit appears to have widened beyond what analysts had initially forecast, raising big questions around the long-term outlook of the pound.

Why you should start saving and the three golden rules to make it work W
ant to beat the pathetic interest paid out on many high street accounts ‐ and turbo‐charge your money for the future? Then it’s time to dip your toe into the stock market. You’ll be swapping the relative safety of an ordinary savings account for the stock markets — and to many people this can seem fraught with danger. But it doesn’t need to be. Don't forget to spread your risk Generally, investing means using your money to back something which you think will give you a profit. Most simply, this means putting your money into shares issued by companies that are listed on the stock market. But with all investing there is a risk. That's why many investors tend to hold shares with investment funds. These put your cash into a basket of companies, thereby spreading the chances of share price rises and falls. What is your prime target? Before you start, you need to ask yourself what am I saving for? Is it a rainy day reserve? Or are you hoping to build up a pot of money to supplement your income in retirement? The answers will help you figure out where to put your money ‐ not least because you’ll know how long it will be invested for. As a rule of thumb, you should be looking at 5 years. Then, if you suffer steep or sudden price falls, you give your cash a greater chance of recovery. Don’t be over‐zealous Take it steady to start with and don’t be tempted to tinker all the time. If you’re over‐zealous, this could lead to you panic‐selling your funds if they’re not doing that well in the short‐term. If this all seems a little daunting to deal with on your own, then help is at hand. There are an awful lot of houses with high, forbidding walls in this part of Spain, turning homes in to fortresses. They are expensive to construct, need regular maintenance and do not deter a burglar if he has really made up his mind to get into your property. In fact it’s far more difficult to get over a prickly hedge! Hedges are more eco-friendly, providing colour, and habitat for birds and bees. And whilst they give just as much privacy and protection from wind, they don’t make you feel imprisoned but rather close to nature. Another plus is that they change according to season, often creating all year interest. You can make hedges from a wide variety of shrubs and trees; Yew (Taxus) is a great favourite as it is slow growing so you will need to ask your nursery for mature plants if you need an instant hedge. It needs to be planted in spring or autumn with about 50cm between plants. You will need to clip it in spring and late summer until it has reached maturity and then just one tidy-up a year in September will keep it in good shape. Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens) is another good hedging plant. There are a number of options, including ‘horizontalis’ with a wide spread and the ability to make a thick hedge quickly. Myoporum, in Spanish often just called Siempreverde, is a fast growing plant with thick glossy leaves which does need regular clipping and gets rather leggy if left to its own devices. However, put it behind some iron railings to give it some support and it is a pretty, evergreen option with small white flowers in spring. Lantana camara is a very popular contender for favourite hedge plant. You can buy a variety of
colours and plant them in a row so that the different shades overlap and entwine as it grows. It does need some maintenance, but will reward you with flowers for most of the year. A spiteful hedge with prickly sprays of long, scented flowers is Berberis. It is a great intruder deterrent! Plant about 60cms apart and you will have a thick, impenetrable hedge which only needs a trim once a year after flowering. If your garden is very exposed, most of the plants already mentioned can form a windbreak, but if you want to include hedge within your garden to divide it up, or emphasize a particular feature, think about a fragrant, lowgrowing herbal hedge. Shrubby herbs are native to this climate, so Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis), Lavender (Lavandula) and Bay laurel (Laurus nobilis) are naturals. One of the most versatile herbs, Bay laurel can be grown as a tall evergreen tree, but lends itself to pruning, training, growing as an espaliered plant, or even as a bonsai style herb plant. Bay plants are very attractive with their waxy-looking olive green leaves, branches that can be trained to suit your
taste, and flavourful leaves that will serve a valuable function as a versatile kitchen spice. Lavender and Rosemary obviously will not grow into tall hedges, but are ideal for defining an area of the garden. They smell wonderful and both produce blue/purple flowers in the spring. They like full sun and should be planted 30-40cms apart. Pinch out the growing tips to make them branch out. Lavender flowers can be harvested when they are freshly opened and dried, hanging upside down in bunches in a cool place. As your hedge is going to be a long-term part of your garden it is important to make sure you get it off to a good start. Do not plant too close to the house or a road - and remember to trim it back so that the pathway outside is safe for pedestrians. You should prepare the planting area in advance, digging it deeply in the early spring and then leaving it to dry and break up a bit for a few days. Dig a trench about a metre wide and put a good layer of compost or horse manure at the bottom. This encourages the roots to keep in their own territory and stops them wandering off to rob other plants of food and water. Finishing the border with a layer of organic mulch will help prevent weed competition and conserve moisture as the border plants grow together. Stake any thin or spindly plants and water well until they are established. After that most hedges need little extra water and will give you years of privacy and pleasure. Marc Vijverberg

Cruelty or justifiable tradition? Should animals be included in religious processions and festivals? The traditional cabalgata of the three kings used to include an array of goats, ducks and other animals paraded through the streets. With the election of the new government this was no longer the case. Other animal-friendly changes have included the banning of animals in circuses and, more recently, restricting of the use of animals in religious ceremonies. The ban is applied to activities where the animal must perform in a way that is unnatural to them. People have strong views on both sides and this recently came to a head with the Hermandad delRoció pilgrimage which took place in Torrevieja. The council banned the use of oxen from the procession. The animals are made to kneel in front of the Virgen and this is considered by many to be unacceptable. However, should the horses also be banned from this procession? In a recent article in Información, a member of the PP launched a direct attack at the local government for the
rejection of the use of animals in parades. However, others argue that religious tradition should not be used as an excuse to continue retrogressive or harmful practices. Following the publicity about an alleged conflict, the town council issued a press release on the 5th July to deny that there was a disagreement over the use of animals in the Roción pilgrimage. Sincethe reported clash of views between the organisers of the pilgrimage of the Virgen del Rocío and Councillor Domingo Pérez from the town hall, both parties are keen to emphasise that there has been nothing but cooperation. The allegations began following the changes to the traditional procession that included the dropping of the ‘kneeling oxen’ from the romería (pilgrimage). It was then alleged that the town council were unhappy that two horses still took part. However, both parties now claim that the procession went ahead exactly as planned. ‘At no time have I issued a
complaint,’ states the president of the Virgen del Rocío Asociación. ‘Nor was I disappointed with the support for our pilgrimage. We always knew that the oxen would not be included and we accepted it. Nothing was said about the use of horses.’ Councillor Pérez has also stated that there has been a supportive relationship with the association and they have received their full cooperation. ‘It’s true that we are not going to allow the use of animals in unnatural activities. However, we are reconsidering the use of horses in these types of celebrations as long as they are given permission.’ Whatever your view point, it is likely that the debate about the use of animals will continue for years to come. WELCOME TO BARBADOS with Vivalia Travel Nauplia or Nafplio is a seaport town in the Peloponnese in Greece that has expanded up the hillsides near the north end of the Argolic Gulf
Barbados is a sovereign island country in the Lesser Antilles, in the Caribbean region of North America. It is 34 kilometres (21 miles) in length and up to 23 km (14 mi) in width, covering an area of 432 km2 (167 sq mi). It is situated in the western area of the North Atlantic and 100 km (62 mi) east of the Windward Islands and the Caribbean Sea; Inhabited by Kalinago people since the 13th century, and prior to that by other Amerindians, Barbados was visited by Spanish navigators in the late 15th century and claimed for the Spanish Crown. It first appeared in a Spanish map in 1511 The Portuguese visited the island in 1536, but they left it unclaimed, with their only remnants being an introduction of wild hogs for a good supply of meat whenever the island was visited. An English ship, the Olive
Barbados is situated in the Atlantic Ocean, east of the other West Indies Islands. Barbados is the easternmost island in the Lesser Antilles. It is flat in comparison to its island neighbours to the west, the Windward Islands. The island rises gently to the central highland region, with the high point of the nation being Mount Hillaby in the geological Scotland District 340 m (1,120 ft) above sea level. Climate The country generally experiences two seasons, one of which includes noticeably higher rainfall. Known as the "wet season", this period runs from June to November. By contrast, the "dry season" runs from December to May. Annual precipitation ranges between 1,000 and 2,300 mm (40 and 90 in). From December to May the average temperatures range from 21 to 31 째C (70 to 88 째F), while between June and November, they range from 23 to 31 째C (73 to 88 째F). Culture The culture of Barbados is a blend of West African, Creole, Indian and British cultures present in Barbados. Citizens are officially called Barbadians. The term "Bajan" (pronounced BAY-jun) may have come from a localised pronunciation of the word Barbadian, which at times can sound more like "Bar-bajan". The largest carnival-like cultural event that takes place on the island is the Crop Over festival. As in many other Caribbean and Latin American countries, Crop Over is an important event for many people on the island, as well as the thousands of tourists that flock to there to participate in the annual events.
Blossom, arrived in Barbados in 1625; its men took possession of it in the name of King James I. In 1627, the first permanent settlers arrived from England, and it became an English and later British colony As a wealthy sugar colony, it became an English center of the African slave trade until slavery was outlawed in 1807. In 1966, Barbados became an independent state and Commonwealth realm with the British Monarch (presently Queen Elizabeth II) as hereditary head of state. Etymology The name Barbados is either the Portuguese word Barbados or the Spanish equivalent los Barbados, both meaning "the bearded ones". It is unclear whether "bearded" refers to the long, hanging roots of the bearded fig-tree (Ficus citrifolia), indigenous to the island; or to the allegedly bearded Caribs once inhabiting the island; or, more fancifully, to a visual impression of a beard formed by the sea foam that sprays over the outlying reefs.. Furthermore, the island of Barbuda in the Leewards is very similar in name and was once named Las Barbudas by the Spanish. Geography and climate
Cuisine Bajan cuisine is a mixture of African, Indian, Irish, Creole and British influences. A typical meal consists of a main dish of meat or fish, normally marinated with a mixture of herbs and spices, hot side dishes, and one or more salads. The meal is usually served with one or more sauces. The national dish of Barbados is Cou-Cou & fried Flying Fish with spicy gravy. Another traditional meal is "Pudding and Souse" a dish of pickled pork with spiced sweet potatoes. A wide variety of seafood and meats are also available. The Mount Gay Rum visitors centre in Barbados claims to be the world's oldest remaining rum company, with earliest confirmed deed from 1703. Cockspur Rum and Malibu are also from the island. Music In music, eight-time Grammy Award winner Robyn Rihanna Fenty (born in Saint Michael) is one of Barbados' best-known artists and one of the best selling music artists of all time, selling over 200 million records worldwide. In 2009 she was appointed as an Honorary Ambassador of Youth and Culture for Barbados by the late Prime Minister, David Thompson.

Immigrants return to Spain after crisis-led decline Spain has become a net recipient of migration once again. In 2016, more people came to live here than left the country – a trend not seen since 2009, when the economic crisis scared away both Spaniards and foreign residents. As a result, for the first time in five years the population of Spain has seen a rise. On January 1, 2017 the figure stood at 46.53 million, a 0.19 percent increase from the previous year, according to numbers released by the National Statistics Institute (INE). Immigrant arrivals in Spain peaked in the early 2000s, during the economic boom derived from the real estate bubble. But the influx ended abruptly in 2009, the last year when immigrant arrivals exceeded departures. And it was not just foreigners who went back home – a lot of Spaniards also decided to go abroad in search of job opportunities. At the height of the crisis, in 2013, Spain lost a quarter of a million inhabitants this way. Since then, immigration has started to pick up speed again while emigration slowed down. In 2015, more foreigners settled in Spain than those who left, but the number of emigrating Spaniards resulted in net emigration, even though it was by a small margin. Last year, for the first time since 2009, the trend was reverted: net migration was positive, showing a figure of 89,126 people. The data for
2016 shows the most intense immigration since 2008: 417,033 new arrivals. Of these, 85 percent were foreigners, while 15 percent were returning Spaniards. In 2016, 354,461 foreign nationals settled down in Spain, while 241,795 left. The main country of origin is Venezuela, where a profound political and economic crisis has pushed nearly 30,000 people out of the country and into Spain. Just under 2,000 returned to Venezuela last year, leaving a net figure of 27,674 in favor of Spain. Even so, the Venezuelan community remains small (63,491 individuals in 2016), as the country has not traditionally been an emitter of migrants to Spain. The second most important country of origin for immigration last year was Morocco, with 21,386 net arrivals. There was also significant immigration from Colombia last year (16,809). The largest foreign communities living in Spain by far remain Romanians (678,098) and Moroccans (667,189). Also last year, 150,739 foreign-born residents acquired Spanish citizenship. After Venezuela, Morocco, Colombia and Romania, the fifth country in terms of net migration was Italy, with nearly 15,000 arrivals. While more British nationals come to Spain, many Spaniards choose to move to
the UK, making the net migration figure smaller.
Spaniards prefer Britain There are still more Spaniards leaving than coming back. In 2016, 86,112 Spaniards emigrated, while 62,572 returned. And despite fears over Brexit, Britain was their preferred destination. For every three Spaniards that moved there last year, only one came back. In terms of favored destinations, after Britain, Spaniards chose to move predominantly to France, Germany and the United States.
Expat pensioners in Spain double in 10 years A new joint report by Britain’s Office for National Statistics and Spain’s National Statistics Institute (INE) has found that that 121,000 (40 percent) of British residents in Spain were aged 65 and over in 2016, and that this number has more than doubled since 2006. Drafted as the first document in a new series on British nationals living abroad and EU citizens living in the UK: ‘Living abroad: migration between Britain and Spain’ also found that there were 116,000 Spanish citizens resident in the UK between 2013 and 2015 with around half of these aged 20 to 39 years old. And 78 percent of Spanish citizens working in the UK worked in the following sectors: public administration, education and health, banking and finance, distribution, and hotels and restaurants.

Spain’s unemployment drops in June as tourism season kicks off Once again, June has proved one of the best months for Spain’s labour market: the number of people registered as out of work at the country’s unemployment offices fell by 98,317 people last month, with 87,692 people signing up to the country’s Social Security system, according to Employment Ministry figures released recently. The steady improvement in the labour market since 2014 has seen unemployment come down to 3.36 million. The total number of people paying into the Social Security system is now 18.4 million, with 672,835 new affiliates added over the last 12 months, a 3.79 percent increase on June 2016. In Spain, tourism, economic recovery and employment go together, and this is never clearer than in spring and summer. In June of 2016, the hospitality sector provided the greatest number of new additions to the Social Security system: 36,448 workers; next came retail (31,344), followed by other sectors such as administration, health, the services sector and industry, which all took on new workers to cover the needs of the summer vacation period. The Social Security fund has seen a steady growth in new contributors for the last 43 consecutive months. At the same time, June once again revealed the negative side of Spain’s
decade-long economic crisis: there were more than two million temporary and reduced-hours contracts signed in June alone; of the total number of new hirings, just 7.9 percent were indefinite contracts.
The latest figures suggest that when the quarterly workforce survey known as the ‘Encuesta de Población Activa’ (Active Population Survey, or EPA) is published at the end of July, around 27 percent of people will be employed under temporary contracts. By the end of 2017, a record 20 million contracts will have been signed in one year. So far this year, 10.54 million contracts have been signed, a million more than for the same period last year, with 2016 ending with 19.98 million contracts.

It’s not what I want
I think I’ve blown it
My girlfriend is pressuring me to get married and have kids. We have been together for a couple of years. I care about her but am not sure I want marriage and the whole settling down thing. I have always felt there's another life for me. I had thought of going to University when I left school, not settle down with a 9 to 5 job and have a wife and children.
I was having an affair with a colleague from work. He is married with young children, and I have a long term partner. I want us to leave our partners and live together, but he is now saying that he loves his wife. I was devastated and I told his wife. He now hates me, and I have ruined everything. He's left work so I will probably never see him again. He has blocked my calls and won't answer the door at his home. His wife threw things at me the last time I called at their house.
It is clear that your girlfriend wants all the things that young couples want out of life, a marriage and a family. If this is not what you really want, and more importantly you are questioning your love for her, then you need to think seriously about your feelings. With more than half of marriages ending in divorce these days, the worst thing you could do is marry this girl out of complacency. She deserves to settle down with someone who loves her, and can make her happy, and you need to pursue the life you want otherwise you will be miserable.
It looks like this relationship didn't mean as much to this man as it did to you, and you have to come to terms with the situation. Matters got worse when you told his wife, and quite honestly things were never going to get back on track for you after that. I think you will have back off now. Your intentions are unwanted by this man, who wants no more to do with you. Be careful. If you pursue this, you may find they involve the Police.

San Pedro introduces controversial beach fines
Beach town San Pedro has banned bathers from playing bat and ball and other games on the sands and has threatened to fine anyone who urinates in the sea €750. San Pedro del Pinatar, close to the Alicante province border, has also banned nudism on all its beaches, and will issue fines for 'beach-blocking' – or reserving spaces with towels and sunbeds in advance – and the amount will double for holding barbecues on the beach. Occupying the beach for ‘unauthorised commercial reasons’ will result in penalties of up to €3,000 and taking animals onto the beach is included in the prohibited activities, although generally, most beaches in
Spain will not allow people to walk their dogs or ride their horses on the sand between about March or April and October. Taking stereos or other musical devices such as MP3 players, iPods or using mobile phones for the same purpose are not against the rules 'provided the decibel level does not exceed established limits’. Even cycling on the seafront promenade, on pushbikes or tandems, is banned and subject to fines. ‘Misuse of the foot showers’ – the details of which are undefined – removing the famous mineral mud from the Mar Menor inland sea, or washing with soap in the sea will
mean bathers are fined €750. Beach ball games are also banned because they ‘could cause a nuisance to other bathers’, says the new local byelaw. Residents and regular beachgoers in San Pedro del Pinatar have criticised the anti-nudism rule most harshly. The La Llana beach, some distance from the town centre – far enough that nobody would stumble across it accidentally and be offended – has long been a nudist beach, but now, bathers will have to cover up. The Spanish Naturism Federation plans to take legal action against the town hall for abuse of power. It says nudism cannot be banned on naturist beaches without a State law being passed first. “San Pedro del Pinatar is the first town in Spain to ban nudism on every single one of its beaches – and the others who do so, just 10 in the whole country, only ban naked bathing on urban beaches,” the Federation complains. Other rules in force include no ‘unauthorised’ travelling salespeople, no surfing or other water sports in the direct bathing area, and no boats of any description within 200 metres of the shoreline.

re you tired of looking for that perfect place in the sun? Been on countless viewing appointments, looking at house after house? Spending all of your waking hours searching on the internet for your dream home? If you feel this could be you, then you need to sit down, and ask yourself if you’re being unrealistic in what you’re really hoping to find, in your dream home in Spain. Over the years, I’ve seen lots of “wish lists” of what a dream home should be like, but if you still haven’t found that perfect property, maybe it’s time for a reality check, and start making a shorter list of what’s more important for you. Sometimes, with just a little compromise, you could be owning your dream home sooner than you think. Start your list off with the location. Is this high on your priority list or lower down? Ask yourself, what if the perfect home was just five or ten minutes away from where you’re currently looking. Would that be a major problem, or something that’s worth considering? Maybe the ideal property is a little further away from amenities, and having a car would be a necessity. Most local and major supermarkets deliver right to your door, so don’t let the fact that a local shop isn’t within a few minutes walk put you off. Have you seen a potential contender that fits your budget, but there’s not enough rooms? Ask yourself if you really need all of those bedrooms? Are they to accommodate your visitors for a week or two in a year, or will they be used every single? If you’re looking to have
enough bedrooms for your visitors, then remember, that’s exactly what they are… visitors… means they won’t be staying with you for long. If the property has a sun room, you can buy beds that fold away that look like a cupboard. With a bed settee in the lounge, and a fold away bed in the sun room, you are easily able to accommodate four extra people. And if that’s not enough, then maybe asking a neighbour if they’re willing to rent their home to your family or friends for a week or two, may be an ideal option. If you’ve seen a property and love every feature it offers, but there’s one downside, it doesn’t have enough bathrooms then see if there’s room to extend. Adding on a bathroom is one of the easiest forms of home improvements you can invest in. Not only will you have that much desired extra room, but it will also add value. An average sized shower room can cost approximately €5,000 to construct. Obviously, with any extension work, you’ll need to check all regulations regarding planning permission within that specific area. If the property is on a community, then planning permission will need to be granted from them as well as the local Town Hall. Any experienced Agent and builder should be able to guide you regarding planning permissions. If there’s no swimming pool, and that was high up on your list of priorities, then as long as there’s enough room within the garden, you can always build your own custom designed pool, or maybe a hot tub would tick that box instead. The Spa Superstore, next door to Iceland in Torrevieja, can accommodate your pool or hot tub requirements. Whenever you’re looking at properties, it can become very tiring if you’re not realistic. Keeping an open mind and by making slight compromises, will mean you’ll have less to get stressed about and more time to start enjoying your new purchase in the sun. It’s an exciting time… enjoy the journey! Think property? Think us, because life’s complicated enough! See our advert in the centre pages of this newspaper. www.homes4u.es

Spain’s new real estate boom: the rental market The Spanish real estate market is experiencing a new boom, this time in the rental sector. The average rent for new leases has risen 20.9 percent over the last year, according to leading industry website Idealista. And cities like Madrid and Barcelona saw record average prices. This is due to a rise in demand, but also to a drop in supply. That is because many homeowners who had been renting out their properties during the economic slump are now putting them back on the sales market as prices start to pick up again. Added to this is the fact that shortterm rentals to tourists has become a more profitable proposition than longterm leases. All of which is making life more complicated for regular renters. According to Idealista’s figures, there are six cities in Spain where rent is higher than it was a decade ago: Barcelona, Las Palmas, Palma, Madrid, San Sebastián and Girona. The National Statistics Institute (INE) offers more dramatic numbers: rent levels in 48 provinces are higher than in May 2007. In the 10 most populated provinces, accumulated rent inflation since 2007 is between 5 percent and 15 percent. A study by the University of Barcelona predicts that rent will continue to rise this year at an average rate of 8 percent in Barcelona and 13 percent to 14 percent in Madrid. The study’s author, economics professor Gonzalo Bernardos, explains that during the crisis, the slump in property prices made many owners
decide to rent out their properties instead. Between 2007 and 2013, supply grew 65 percent. But that trend is being reversed now.
“Out of every 10 rental leases that expired last year, six of those properties are now being put up for sale,” he said. “At play here is the psychological effect on many owners who did not want to sell their properties for less than what they paid for them,” adds José GarcíaMontalvo, who teaches applied economics at Pompeu Fabra University. “In Barcelona there are neighborhoods where prices are back to pre-crisis levels, and so owners would rather sell than keep renting them out. And that drives supply down.” And while supply is dropping, demand keeps rising. “There’s been a psychological change in many people, who no longer feel that renting is tantamount to throwing away your money,” he adds, citing a long-held belief in Spanish society, where home ownership rates remain very high. Some people are renting out of need, as banks continue to be strict about mortgage eligibility following the real estate debacle that left the sector with
Katie’s Day
scores of repossessed properties on their books.
Holiday rentals Meanwhile, vacation rentals are an added element in the equation. While it is unclear how much of an impact shortterm tourist accommodation really has on the rental market, a study commissioned by the city of Barcelona shows that these properties represent 7.7 percent of the city’s entire rental home supply, and says that they do have an effect on prices. But business associations and real estate groups deny this impact, and note that the areas where rent has increased the most are not those with the highest number of short-term tourist lodgings. According to these groups, the biggest impact is caused by the thousands of homes sitting empty that are not on the market. However, a survey of homeowners conducted by property listing website Fotocasa shows that 74percent of owners who rented out their place to tourists reported making more money than if they had rented out to long-term tenants. The key, says another study by the rental company Alquiler Seguro, lies in the number of days that the housing unit is occupied. In Madrid, for instance, a vacation rental would require average occupancy of 15 to 18 nights a month to be as profitable as a long-term lease. In Barcelona, this drops to between 12 and 15 nights a month.

The local community is being asked to come together to celebrate Katie’s Day on Sunday 16th July at The Stray Sod. This will be fun filled day filled with great entertainment to celebrate the life of a much-missed young lady. Katie died at the tender age of just 18 years old from sudden adult death syndrome. Performing was her passion whether it was singing, dancing, acting and she was a founder member of the Matrix Studio taking key roles in a number of productions. Friends and teachers from The Studio will be supporting the day and
artists performing include: Mark Farrow, Taboo, Ollie, Nicky G, Elise, Matrix Rock Choir, Danni, Carla Stone, Bono and a few surprise guests. There will be a grand prize raffle to raise funds for the Katie Salmon Performing Arts Scholarships. This memorial charity has been established by Katie’s parents, Julie and Gary with scholarships awarded to children under 18years of age. The initiative provides subsided musical theatre, vocal and musical instrument classes and the principal aim of the Katie Salmon Performing Arts Scholarships is to try to make sure that any child between the ages of 6 to 18 years of age is given every chance to be able to take part in as many performing arts activities as they would like to. However, these activities cost money, which all parents struggle to find from time to time. The Scholarship fund already supports all Matrix Drama students at a cost of 5e per week for classes. Anyone who wishes to help by holding fund raising events for the scholarship programme or to find out more about ‘Sponsor a student’ can contract Julie and Gary via the Facebook page ‘Katie Salmon Performing Arts Scholarships’ or email: Katiesalmonscholarships@gmail.com

In 1879, Spanish archaeologist Marcelino (Antonio Banderas) and his daughter Maria (Allegra Allen) discover seemingly impossible paintings of galloping bison adorning the walls of a hidden cave. The cave of Altamira brings the world together in amazement, drawing people of all types to see the paintings in person. But, Marcelino soon realizes that the art on the walls must be 10,000 years old, earlier than anyone believes possible. The theory threatens to tear Maria and Marcelino’s family apart while the outside world’s astonishment soon turns to fury and fear. The Catholic Church sees his claims as an attack on biblical truth while scientists prove just as dogmatic and reactionary. Maria’s fairytale world grows darker as her family faces disaster and Marcelino’s discovery is repressed. Only their love for each other can guide them toward redemption as Marcelino fights to spread the truth.

T
he week kicks off on Tuesday with a multitude of tribute shows. La Marina will be hold‐ ing a much awaited mini fiesta in Consum Square with Phil Collins Tribute, Rob Lewis taking to the stage. Over in Lo Crispin Danny Fisher will be shake, rattle and rolling with his lively Elvis show at La Bodegueta. If Rod Stewart is your type of music then David John Williams will be “Sailing” over in Cabo Roig at YOLO. (If you wonder what that stands for it is You Only Live Once). On Wednesday there is an all day event from noon in aid of Elche Children’s Care Home at the Celtic Isle. Lots of stalls and entertainment including the very popular Stevie Spit, (who is always first to offer his services to help many charities). We have all waited for months, but she is finally here! Celena Deans starts her Diana Ross Show summer tour of Spain this week and her first port of call is at Hillside in La Marina on Friday. Celena will be donning the fantail frock and starting off a “Chain Reaction” along with loads of other Diana Ross favourites. Her show also includes dance floor fillers, (everyone of which I used to dance to). She is only here for a month so keep an eye out so you don’t miss her at a venue near you. She will also be visiting The Orange Bar at Entre Naranjas with the Ce‐ lena Deans show on Sunday. Great bar, and one of the most popular in the area, so you might want to book in advance for both of these venues if you want a seat. A busy bar that has top acts and good food to boot is Timeout Sports Bar in San Javier. Saturday is the turn of Steve The Entertainer who recently appeared at Benidorm Palace on the Joe Longthorn show. Steve can also be found getting the party going every Tuesday at The Boston Tavern in Torreblanca. Looks like the Costa Blanca is the place to be! Not only are “Britain’s Got Talent” holding audition here in July, but I have recently been con‐ tacted by 2 of the Rubettes (“Sugar Baby Love”). If anyone is interested in seeing this show or has a large venue that can hold 200 people or more please contact me. Availabil‐ ity is at the beginning of September and will be a once in a lifetime chance to see one of the very tal‐ ented 70’s band.

Spain still fastest growing destination for package holidaying Brits Spain is still the most appealing destination for package holidaying Brits as new figures show 270,000 more are set to arrive this summer compared to last year. The figures, from the Gfk Leisure Travel Monitor for the UK, show Spain’s increase in British tourists far outweighs its competitors. One of its closest rival, up and coming Greece, paled in comparison, increasing its number of British holidaymakers by 95,600.
Other growing destinations included the Caribbean, Croatia, Cyprus and Portugal. Marginal growth has been seen by the Cape Verde Islands, Portugal, Mexico and Italy. Canada, France, Malta, and the United Arab Emirates are set to be down on last year. Turkey, which has been the big loser in recent years due to terrorism fears, remains 70,000 passengers down on last year. The US is suffering the second
biggest decline of around 23,000 passengers as it struggles to overcome challenges like sterling’s slump against the pound and the Trump effect. Immediately after the election, bookings by Brits dropped by 16 percent.

ANGELIC GROUNDING & PROTECTION
B
efore any spiritual work, particularly meditation it is imperative to ground and put a shield of protection around yourself in order to achieve the correct state of balance. When working with the angels we also undertake an inner attunement. This is a way of clearing the accumulated debris from our spiritual path to start communicating with the angels in a purified way working on the three primary bodies, the Mental, the Emotional, and the Physical. You will only feel the angels or benefit from the exercise and the following meditation if you believe, and trust in the angelic realms otherwise our disbelief will stop our consciousness from making the connection. Angelic grounding & protection. Close your eyes, and sit upright with your hands on your knees. Imagine roots growing from the soles of your feet, and linking with mother earth. This will ensure you are grounded, or anchored. Then imagine a large gold star over your head which starts to rotate gently. As it rotates, you can see white light surrounding its points, which then scatters down to surround your body from the top of your head, your crown chakra, right down to your feet. You
are now bathing in beautiful ethereal light and are soon ready to be working with the angels. Star breathing I want you to focus on your heart chakra, and imagine a star of the purest white and silver taking radiant form in your heart. The star has six points. Breathe in its brilliance, as if you drew each breath through your heart. See yourself being slowly absorbed into its centre. Rest peacefully in this exquisite star temple of the heart, and start to feel the presence of the angels all around you. If anyone is concerned at any time or feel that things are moving too quickly for them, go back into your star temple of the heart where you will feel safe, protected and loved. Please do not worry, as everyone is different, and work at different paces. No-one will judge you, so just stay within your star temple until we have finished the meditation. However, if you need assistance, please remain quiet so as not to disturb anyone else, and I will come straight to you. Working with angels is a beautiful experience, but also very powerful which is why we ensure we are grounded and protected beforehand. If you can, just let yourself feel their loving wings around you.

Signs that you will age faster than you should None of us want to see our body aging any faster than it should. It's not just genetics—there are numerous factors that influence how your body ages. Diet, smoking, sun exposure, pollution, and exercise habits all play a role in how long you live, how your skin glows, how healthy you are, and even how your brain functions. That's right, the degradation of your mental acuity can be influenced by daily choices: University of Cambridge researchers recently discovered that being overweight or obese can cause your brain to appear an extra 10 years older compared to lean individuals of the same age. Although aging is a natural process, there are some habits you may be partaking in which are speeding up the process of common age-related activities like wrinkled skin, aches and pains, mental decline, and predisposition to diseases. Often we don't even realise these seemingly routine habits are shortening our lifespan dramatically. So, if you're looking to look better, live longer, stay sharp, and feel full of energy, these are the mistakes you could be making that are signs you'll age faster than you should… You Love Meat If your carnivore attitude is crowding veggies from making it to your plate, you may be negatively affecting your lifespan. The link between increased meat consumption and early death has been noted in multiple studies, including a recent analysis of 1.5 million people in the Journal of the American Osteopathic Association. On the other hand, those who eat the most fruit and veggies have a 15 percent lower risk of mortality than
those who eat the least amount, according to Vanderbilt researchers. Experts speculate the higher risk of allcause mortality among meat-eaters is because people who eat a lot of red meat also tend to eat fewer plant-based foods, so they consume fewer of their cancerprotective antioxidants and nutrients. You Sit A Lot You may think a builder’s job is dangerous, but experts have found that working a desk job may put your health in a similar amount of danger. According to a 2016 analysis of one million men and women by Cambridge University researchers, sitting for at least eight hours a day could increase your risk of premature death by up to 60 percent. Heart disease and cancer were the top causes of death linked to an inactive lifestyle, but prolonged periods of sitting have also been connected to slow blood circulation, poor blood sugar regulation, and high cholesterol levels—which set the stage for age-related diseases. There is a silver lining: The authors also found that among those who sat for 8 hours or more a day, the participants who also engaged in at least an hour's worth of exercise—such as moderate walking—reduced their risk of mortality by nearly 40 percent compared to those who didn't move at all. You're Driven By Your Sweet Tooth Whether you're always sipping a fizzy drink, can't separate yourself from sugary cereals, or constantly crave sugary
‘nutrition’ bars, you're aging yourself in more ways than one. For starters, when we eat foods that are high in sugar, we overwhelm our body with sugar molecules. As a result, these excess molecules can cause important proteins, like collagen and elastin (the proteins that keep skin looking firm and young) to
researchers from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine found that when people cut out sugary, processed, and fried foods that have high levels of AGEs, markers of inflammation in their body diminished. You Don't Bother With Exercise You don't even need a gym to work
Foundation tell us that most Americans don't get enough shuteye. Because sleep is a critical component of hormone regulation, muscle recovery, memory development, and maintaining a properly functioning metabolism, over time, sleep deprivation can lead to weight gain, anxiety, depression and insulin resistance—which can trigger type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease. Make catching some ZZZ's a top priority so your body can adequately produce fat-burning hormones. Fish Are Your Friends, But Not Your Food If you're a "catch and release" kind of person, you could be missing out on some major benefits. The same study that found trans fats could exacerbate UV damage from the sun found that fish fats could prevent it! The magic is in the omega-3 fats, DHA and EPA, which help dampen inflammation, lower triglyceride levels, and minimize diet-induced metabolic and brain damage caused by fructose. It gets better: a new study published in the journal Nutrition found supplementing your diet with Omega-3s could help minimize shortening of your telomeres. These are the end part of your DNA whose length directly correlates with longevity.
haphazardly glue together. The result is increased levels of inflammation markers - which has been implicated in causing countless age-related diseases - and the breakdown of proteins that prevent our skin from sagging. Luckily, this can be reversed:
out. Experts find that just 30 minutes of moderate walking can improve health, lower bad cholesterol, protect your heart, improve insulin sensitivity, and perhaps most importantly, strengthen bones. As we age, an injury becomes increasingly life threatening. On top of ensuring you're consuming enough vitamin D and calcium, ensure you're getting in at least three days of 30-minute brisk walking. You Don't Go Green We'll give it to you straight: Green tea melts belly flab. Researchers attribute the tea's fat-burning properties to catechins like EGCG—a group of antioxidative compounds that blast adipose tissue by revving the metabolism, increasing the release of fat from adipose cells, and speeding up the liver's fat-burning capacity. Keeping you trim isn't the only way to extend your life; A 2015 study discovered that out of 90,000 people, those who consumed the most green tea had the lowest risk of all-cause mortality. Sipping this brew is also connected to lower risks of dementia, psychological distress, stroke, and even bone fractures which become increasingly prevalent in older women. All Your Grains Are White White grains are stripped of their outer, fibre- and nutrient-rich shell, meaning they're essentially just another version of sugar. Sugar feeds the bad bacteria in your gut, which can then crowd out the good bacteria which help release antiinflammatory compounds into your body. Eating white grains, like white rice, white bread, pasta, and pizza, means you're eating fewer whole grains - foods that researchers are finding have powerful benefits; The high B-vitamin content of whole grains (which is nearly entirely lost during the refinement process) helps to reduce the inflammatory hormone homocysteine in the body. Plus, high fibre foods suppress appetite and strengthen your immunity, a system that tends to weaken with age. You Rarely Get a Good Night's Rest If you didn't already know from personal experience, the National Sleep
'Just One More' Drinking in moderation has its health benefits, but drinking to excess can be damaging. The occasional glass (or two) of wine is no harm to you or your skin, but drinking to excess, especially sugary drinks, causes cell-damaging free radicals. Alcohol also robs the body of vitamin A, an antioxidant that's essential for cell renewal and turnover. Make sure that when you do drink, reach for cocktails without added sugars (like those frozen margs) and try to limit yourself to two drinks at a time. You Still Use Margarine Trans fats are about as bad for your health as they are for your skin cells. Despite the FDA's mandate to remove partially hydrogenated fats from processed goods by 2018, many of us are still consuming this artery-clogging trans fat in store-bought baked goods, fried foods, and many shelf-stable ‘dairy’ products. Studies have linked intake of trans fats with systemic inflammation, which expedites the development of coronary artery disease and diabetes. Most Of Your food is Fried or Processed Pepperoni, bacon, sausages, and deli meats. The nitrates and preservatives used in processed meats are known to be pro-inflammatory in that they create free radicals in your body. Free radicals lead to oxidation of your cells and DNA, and they can cause enough damage to lead to cancer or other health conditions. Plus, these meats are often full of saturated fats, as is fried foods such as chips and doughnuts which age the heart. Keep intake of processed meats and fried foods to a minimum. Most Of Your Meals Are Microwaveable Frozen meals are notoriously high in sodium, which can cause dehydration, water retention, and bloating—resulting in a puffy, aged appearance. Some early studies show [high salt foods] damage DNA, shortening telomeres and accelerating aging. Not to mention, too much sodium leads to high blood pressure, which is linked to wrinkles and cardiovascular disease.

Free guide to the beaches of Orihuela Costa Orihuela Town Hall has published a brochure to promote its beaches and the services available at them. Councillor Luisa Boné said it contains “the best images of our coast as well as the services we have available at each of them”. “It is very practical for checking elevators, public toilets, lifeguard posts, accessibility, foot taps, beach bars, children’s play areas, ports and other areas.” Councillor Sofia Álvarez said it “offers our residents and tourists a manual which we can also use to promote one of the things we offer to tourists that is in demand”. The catalogue is in Spanish and English and can be downloaded from the Town Hall tourism website www.orihuelaturistica.es. The direct link is: http://www.orihuelaturistica.es/orihuela/ uploaded/PLAYAS-DE-ORIHUELA-2017ilovepdf-compressed.pdf “It is about positioning Orihuela and reaching the target of making our city a reference point, especially in the middle of the high season,” said Álvarez..

Summer style at Timeless Fashions Located on the top floor of Punta Marina Commercial Centre, Timeless Fashions is a small boutique offering exclusive but affordable clothing and accessories for each season. Over the last ten years the boutique has built an excellent reputation and attracts customers from across the globe. Stock changes every 7 to 10 days and the summer collections are now in – and flying off the rails. Current ranges
include exclusive labels such as Neslay and Saloos which are ever-popular on cruise ships and in Oxford Street, but at much higher prices. Timeless Fashions owner Joy said: “We are a small boutique and so I only stock a limited number of items, which means clients are unlikely to see someone else wearing their outfit. I keep my costs and mark-up as low as I can to offer excellent quality at affordable prices and change the stock to keep the collections new and fresh.” Popular at the moment are bright summer colours which are seen across several labels in dresses and tops. Pocket dresses that can be dressed up or down and three-quarter trousers that offer stylish but cool comfort. The team at Timeless Fashions have many years experience and an expert eye. They know their stock extremely well and this enables them to help customers chose outfits that suit their shape and colouring and therefore look stunning, whatever the occasion. Timeless fashions also stocks a range of accessories and handbags. The modern and stylish jewellery collections would compliment any outfit, whether day or evening wear and there are necklaces, earings and bracelets to complete any look. The boutique is just about to take delivery of a new range of very desirable handbags, which are definitely worth taking a look at and for those hunting for a bargain there is currently a sale rail of end of line items with 30 percent off. Timeless Fashion regularly hosts charity fashion shows and is planning a larger than usual event in October to coincide with its 10th anniversary. All clothing and accessories can be seen on the Timeless Fashions facebook page or call for more details on 966 722 103. The Boutique is open 10am until 6pm Monday to Friday and 10am until 4pm on Saturdays.

Are you at risk of skin cancer?
Get your free mole check at Medcare Skin cancer is the fifth most common cancer in the UK – yet still too many people are not taking the risk of contracting the disease seriously enough. Rates of malignant melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer, are five times higher today in the UK than in the 1970s. The rise is blamed on more people taking holidays abroad, using sunbeds and of course living in the sun here in Spain which puts people at even greater risk. And - whilst people may be safe in the sun now, if they have sunbathed in the past, they still have a high risk of developing skin cancer. Because of this, Medcare is offering a FREE skin cancer checks at both clinics in Benijofar and Alfaz del Pi by specialist GP Dr Hussain - and these checks HAVE saved lives. Book your check by calling 966 860 258 or email doctors@medcarespain.com. One Medcare patient, Michael Chase, knows only too well the importance of skin checks. An itchy mole on his shoulder was diagnosed as a basal cell carcinoma by Dr Hussain. He says ‘it was quite a shock especially as my wife’s first husband died of skin cancer. According to Dr Hussain, I probably did the damage when I was 18 or 19 and used to come to Spain on holiday, spending hours lying in the sun try to get a dark tan. All these years later, the cancer developed’. The most important warning sign of
melanoma is a new spot on the skin or a spot that’s changing in size, shape, or color. Another important sign is a spot that looks different from all of the other spots on your skin. If you have any of these warning signs, have your skin checked by a doctor. To help protect you and your family, the British Skin Foundation recommends: • Protect your skin with clothing and don’t forget to wear a hat that protects your face, neck and ears. • Spend time in the shade between 11am and 3pm when its sunny. • When choosing a sunscreen, look for a high protection SPF (SPF 30 or more) to protect again UVB and the UVA circle logo
and/or 4 or 5 UVA stars to protect against UVA. • Apply plenty of sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before going out in the sun, and reapply every two hours and straight after swimming and towel-drying. • Keep babies and young children out of direct sunlight. If you do have a mole or patch of skin that you are concerned about, book a free skin cancer check with one of Medcare’s GPs by calling 966 860 258 or email doctors@medcarespain.com. Alternatively receive the latest special offers by visiting Medcare's website at www.medcarespain.com.

Mobile App scam rips off a million customers in Spain A multi-million scam using fraudulent mobile phone Apps has been uncovered by the Guardia Civil, and seven people arrested following 11 raids on home and trade premises. Network operators raised the alarm when they noticed a high level of calls made by millions of customers to premium-rate numbers, mostly at unusual times of day. 'Operation Rikati' was launched, and quickly revealed that the calls had been made during the night when the mobile phone owner would not have realised – especially as the App switched off the phone or placed it in silent mode whilst ringing the numbers. Some of the calls went on for up to half an hour. To convince users to download the App, the fraudsters used the names and logos of real companies, or fake adverts saying, ‘click here for the best tricks to avoid hair loss’ or ‘for the best porn videos’. If users did so, the bogus App installed itself automatically. Where the programme posed as that of a ‘real’ company, it was advertised on social media as being free of charge to download. The application automatically rang numbers beginning in 803, which are top-rate tariff, or sent text messages to premium-rate numbers. If the Apps raised suspicion, they were deactivated at source and re-launched under another name, which enabled them to escape scrutiny by mobile operators.
Lists of premium-rate numbers for calling or sending messages to were acquired from a telecommunications operator based in Barcelona, whose owner is among the seven arrested. Although the list only contained about 20 numbers, this was enough to generate over 21 million premium-rate text
messages, each of which saw the mobile phone owner charged around €1.50. With between 20 and 25 numbers called or messages sent per month, users found their bills went up by around €30. They tended not to report the matter, as the additional sum was low enough that it could have just been the result of making extra calls or using additional data and not remembering. Also, with operators having applied price hikes that are under investigation by
consumer protection groups as possibly being abusive and in breach of contract, many affected phone owners simply assumed this was why their bills had gone up by €30 or so a month. The racket had been operating since 2013 and, in the last four years, has netted nearly €30 million. Based in Catalunya, the criminal operation set up front companies in the Canary Islands, Andorra, Luxembourg and Hong Kong to launder their earnings. Guardia Civil officers seized around 1,000 Apps under construction and said the conartists had been doctoring them to make them even more sophisticated and difficult to detect by operators. Number check Mobile phone providers in Sant Cugat and Mollet del Vallès (Barcelona province) and in Santa Cruz de Tenerife have been searched and lists of consumers conned into installing the Apps seized. Top-of-the-range cars and assets valued at several million euros have been embargoed and bank accounts frozen in what police say is one of the largest mobile phone fraud rackets in national history. The Guardia Civil has set up a website where mobile phone owners can type in their number and see whether or not they have inadvertently become a victim of the scam – Gdt.guardiacivil.es/webgdt/inforikati.php

Compromís requests more Local Police across Orihuela Political party Compromís for Orihuela has called on the municipal government to expand numbers of Local Police and has asked the city council to ensure that budgets for 2017 include an allocation of funds for this purpose. “The city council must be able to guarantee the security of the neighbors, both in the urban city centre, out in the districts and on the coast,” said the ecosocialist spokesperson Martin Borislavov. He also said that Compromis is aware that "last Sunday in all of Orihuela Costa there
was only one officer on duty, something that is unbelievable and absolutely insufficient.” Borislavov said that “the numbers that make up the of the municipal police force is too few to cover all the territory of Orihuela, which makes the officers work with greater stress because they cannot provide all the coverage they want, while causing a sense of insecurity across the general public.” In the case of the Orihuela coast the secretary of Compromis said that “during
the year there are usually two police patrols, and the logical thing would be that in summer the number of officers is increased. But in fact the opposite happens, the officers take their corresponding summer holidays and so at the point when we have more people on the coast we have fewer policemen.” In addition, Borislavov has also claimed that “the problem also extends to the districts. Residents of San Bartolomé
have told us their concerns, and say that they do not usually see policemen in the village at all, and that when they call them they take a long time to arrive.” With these concerns forefront of mind Compromís for Orihuela is asking the government team to regularise the temporary officers present in the Local Police of Orihuela and increase the workforce “to be able to adequately cover all the territory of Orihuela.”

Tales from the Top Flight ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com
Hang on a second “football”. Since when did you start announcing all the transfers at the weekend? Summer weekends are meant for cricket, not keeping an eye on Twitter and seeing which shockingly bad “player reveal” happens next. And we are not talking small transfers either. Manchester United hoodwinked everyone, especially Chelsea, into thinking they wanted Nemanja Matic before shelling out £75m for Romelu Lukaku which is one hell of a lot of money for someone who, to quote the late great George Best, controls a ball further than I can kick it. But, Jose does like a big strong lad up front and Lukaku is certainly that. £90m on a midfielder last season, £75m on a striker this someone needs to win the league soon I think.
invited to the original party, quickly rushed through the announcement that they have signed AS Roma’s Antonio Rudiger who wanted to leave Serie A due to the inherent racism he faced. He will be delighted to have learned that John Terry has left for Aston Villa then. Well, we always knew John Terry was a bit of a Villain didn’t we? The former England captain has signed a one-year deal with Aston Villa having left Chelsea. In years gone by, some managers have done a fine job of getting a little extra out of an older head at the end of his career. So, will JT be a Rio Ferdinand at QPR or a Paul Merson at Portsmouth? Either way, as Gabby mentioned on WhatsApp, he’s the best defender Villa have ever had without even kicking a ball. Everton are the latest football team keen to sign Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud. With Alexandre Lacazette having finished his goodbyes at Lyon, Giroud could well find himself surplus to requirements, despite being one of two current Arsenal players capable of finding the back of the net
West Ham United want to sign Javier Hernandez from Bayer Leverkusen, but that is hardly news. West Ham want to sign anyone that claims to be a striker and not called Andy Carroll. I give this
Leicester City seem to still be under the impression that Troy Deeney is worth £20m, the silly fools. They are very keen to get the Watford skipper for some reason, and they don’t seem to care what he will cost. Each to their own. More sensibly, the Foxes have signed Vicente Iborra from Sevilla, where the midfielder won the Europa League three times. Nampalys Mendy is heading back to France with “failure” tatooed to his forehead. Diego Costa might be about to have a six-month holiday. Atletico Madrid are deadly serious about signing the Chelsea striker and are not going to let the fact that they are banned from signing new players for six months get in the way. The fact is, they are banned from registering new signings technically, so they can chuck Chelsea the sum of cash, get their

Another deal that has happened is the deal that Swansea City had on the table for Rodrigo Mesa. Fellow Spanish speakers will be giggling at that one, I am sure. Mind you, that probably rules at 75% of my readers hey?
Romelu Lukaku coming in meant there was even less for Wayne Rooney, so he has headed back to his former backyard to the kind of fanfare normally reserved for the returning prodigal son. Critics of Rooney are saying that even a free transfer represents poor value for Everton, whereas critics of Lukaku are suggesting that Everton have actually improved their strikeforce and got £75m for the pleasure. Chelsea, smarting from not being
from time to time. The other, Alexis Sanchez, is still being all mysterious. When Alexis goes, Arsenal will unveil Leicester City’s Riyad Mahrez as a completely inferior replacement.
Oliver Giroud
Having suggested that Jay Rodriguez might be useful to new Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino, he was promptly sold to West Bromwich Albion for £12m. Once again, Tales has its finger on the pulse.
Diego Costa
man but can’t actually play him until January. Therefore Diego will be left kicking his heels until then. He’ll be hungry to play, that’s for sure. Huddersfield Town are efficiently doing some summer business. They have now signed a Benin international from Ligue 1 side Montpellier for £11m. He goes by the name of Steve Mounié and he is rather good apparently. 14 goals in Ligue 1 back up that outlandish statement and joins Tom Ince, signed from Derby County, and Aaron Mooy signed from Manchester City. There’s also an American centre back in there somewhere. Huddersfield might just surprise a few people, you know. One newspaper article suggesting Rafa Benitez might be ready to walk away from Newcastle United certainly sprung Mike Ashley into action. Eibar’s Florian Lejeune has been confirmed, joining Christian Atsu as the other new face at the the club. Anyway, with all these ridiculous “player reveals” going on – I mean, did you see the whole Lacazette farce?! – I am looking forward to the next major signing. I’m hoping that they go full Question of Sport and show Ally McCoist, John Parrot and their teams straining their necks, wisecracking their way through trying to work out which mystery player is wearing the Father Christmas outfit and handing out toys to the kids in July. There will be banter, jokes and all that before McCoist suggests “I think it’s Thomas Lemar, Sue” only for Sue Barker to reveal it’s Jack Wilshere holding a new contract extension.

San Miguel Golf Society at La Finca A while since the society has been to La Finca and 35 members and 4 guests made it this time around. A perfect day weather wise found the course in good condition apart from the greens, a rather major part of events, which had been sanded and fertilised with quite a bit still remaining after brushing. This meant they were slow and not very responsive to the
break. The relatively long set-up of the course once again favoured lower handicappers, scoring in that category outdoing the vast majority of members in the other two. Tony Sims, Steve Higgins
and Brian Mulligan all broke par, with the latter pair both scoring very good 39’s. The day’s stableford competition results, by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 4th Kyree Skarsmoen (26 on CB), 3rd Norman Padmore (28), 2nd Neil Sheldon (31), and 1st Chris Hamblett with 33 points. Silver Category: 4th Dave Blackburn (31), 3rd Linda Cain (32), 2nd Frank Stanhope (35), and 1st Brian Mulligan with 39 points Gold Category: 4th Jamie Rorison (36 on CB), 3rd Norman Cahill (36 on CB), 2nd Tony Sims (37), and 1st, Steve Higgins with 39 points. Nearest the pins on the par 3’s (open to all) went to Jamie Rorison (hole 3), Gary Hill (6), John Sorenson (13) and Noel Bannon (16). The Abacus was won by Wenche Westburg. The Best Guest prize went to Gary Hill (28) Our thanks go to the staff at La Finca golf course for their contribution to an enjoyable day. Keep up to date with all SMGS matters by logging on to our website www.smgs.org or simply give Captain Theo Boelhouwer a call on 694494824 to find out more about the society and its weekly golf get-togethers. Next week we will be at Alicante.

Your week in Sport ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com
So you fly to the other side of the world, play lots of rugby against teams from New Zealand and then have a Test series against the All Blacks. And then, at the end of it all, it’s a draw. And they say cricket is crazy? In the end, the focus was on the referee Romain Poite
who, having watched the video, decided not to give the All Blacks a penalty in the last minute that would have surely led to victory. For the clown Warren Gatland, he was able to wear his big red nose at the final press conference and declare his interest in doing it all again next time. There is plenty of top level sport going on at the moment, and Wimbledon will be well into its second week by the time you read this. Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Rafa Nadal and Andy Murray are all still alive and kicking which really was not expected, especially in this column. Of the four, Nadal looks in the best nick but all that could change by the time we go to print. If Murray does manage to reach even the final, it will be a huge achievement considering he entered the tournament injured. In the women’s game, Heather Watson will
look back on her match with Azarenka and wonder what if, whilst Johanna Konta has proven me wrong by reaching the second week in style. The nicest story of Wimbledon so far is that of the young lad who was given a towel by American singles player Jack Sock. The towel was snatched out of his hands by a far older man who probably should have known better and, of course as this is 2017, the whole affair
Sunday. Ali bowled beautifully once again, taking six in the second innings and ten in the match. Dawson, nowhere near good enough to wear sunglasses when bowling, provided good support with the ball, almost making his pair with the bat forgettable. Valtteri Bottas led from pole to the chequered flag in the Austrian Grand Prix. Vettel did his best, but the Ferrari driver had to be content with second and Lewis Hamilton managed to get from 8th on the grid to finish in 4th. We are up to Stage Nine in the Tour de France and Chris Froome still has the yellow jersey. In the absence of doping scandals, I’ll take big crashes and we are getting more than our fair share. Earlier in the week Mark Cavendish saw his campaign end early following a crash and over the weekend Geraint Thomas went the same way. I would genuinely find the whole thing more interesting if they kept going until it was last man standing. Speaking of doping scandals, more allegations seem to be surrounding Mo Farah. Funny that, eh?
was captured and went viral on social media. Sock immediately appealed to learn of the identity of the wronged kid and promised to send him another towel, leading to the organisers of the French, Australian and USA Open to offer the same - a grand slam for the young fan and, hopefully, a lot of shame for the original towel thief. Joe Root led his new England Test charges to the verge of victory against South Africa in the cricket and must be thinking this captaincy lark is rather easy. Root scored a magical 190 in the first innings before Ali and Dawson spun South Africa into trouble. With the pitch starting to favour the ball rather than the bat, England managed to battle to a lead of 330 before getting a chance to get into the South Africans once again - and the Saffas duly collapsed before the close of play on
T.M.G.S. @ Campoamor This week’s game took us the valleys of Font Del Llop, on a warm but windy day. The 2s pot saw a new winner with Daniel Dewandeler taking the pot. 46€ going his way. 40 members and guests teed it up at what has become a firm favourite of our members and when you read the results you’ll see why. The scores were un believable. The course was presented in immaculate condition and continues to improve. The lower handicappers seemed to have more success. In the bronze category it needed 36 points from Alex Goslan to take 3rd place, Andy Skinner took 2nd with 39 points and a massive 43 points from Irishman Robbie Ray secured 1st place. Again in the Silver category the scores were exceptional, John Hettrick secured 3rd place with 37 points Lars Jernberg must have thought that he had done enough to win but his 43 points could only take
2nd place with Yorkshireman Mick Kennedy topping this category with 44 points. Gold category saw a little more civilised scoring with 4 players on 33 points, 3rd went to Carstan Landaas on handicap, 2nd was taken by Kenny
Winton again only lower handicap but 1st place went to Captain John Eyre with 38 points. Best guest was B. Albin with 37 points. The €29 contained in the 2’s pot was taken by Joe Dean on hole 17. N.T.P.’s hole 4 J. Masson, hole 6 R. Nilsen, hole 10 M. Kennedy, hole 15 NADA, hole 17 J. Dean. Photo: Gold category winners. Our Anniversary Competition will be held at La Marquesa this year on the 9/8/17 where after the competition the committee invite the members to a full 3 course lunch in the clubhouse, which should make it a full house! BETTAS TORREVIEJA RFC NUMBERS GROWING ABBEY ANGLING
We were at the Embalse de Argos for the 7th round of the Summer Series on the 4th July. A lot of the pegs on the warm side are now becoming over grown and had to be cleared before we could start the match; also the wind was very strong on that side making fishing extremely difficult, but there was six weights with over 20 plus kgs. I was drawn on the cold side and taking advantage of being out of the wind managed to take top spot using the paste with over 31kgs. Bill Reade was just behind me in 2nd place with a little over 30kgs also using the paste and was hoping to make it his fifth win in a row (bad luck) 1st Terry Screen with 31.730kgs fishing the pole using paste 2nd Bill Reade with 30.120kgs fishing the pole using paste 3rd Richard Wood with 27.560kgs fishing the method feeder using corn There are still some vacancies

We also fished on the Embalsa de Argos for our 11th round of the Spring Series on the 5th July. A few of us had stopped over-night to save us the double travelling. Fishing was still on par from yesterday with good weights being caught. Bill Reade drawn on the cold side and fishing paste on the pole close in top two plus two, with a winning weight of 44.260kgs to take top spot, that is just short of the ton i.e.100lb. The wind returned later on in the day, but Dave Hutchinson and Doug Hornblow still managed to take the 2nd and 3rd spot with 30kgs plus bags of fish, also taken on the paste 1st Bill Reade with 44.260kgs fishing the pole using paste 2nd Dave Hutchinson with 37.460kgs fishing the pole and feeder using paste and pellet 3rd Doug Hornblow with 33.920kgs fishing the pole using paste There are still some vacancies at the Club and if anyone is interested in joining please contact Bill Reade on 966790416

La Marina Golf Society Summer cup The first of 4 rounds to decide the winner of the summer cup took place at Vistabella Golf on Thursday. In quite oppressive weather conditions, most people achieved good scores although round of the day went to modest " I’ve got no chance" Pete Wootton on the day of his wedding anniversary, with a score of 42 points, eclipsing even the 39 points of consistent high scorer Gerry Mccabe. Gold division winner was John Brastock with a comparatively measly 34 points, beating Alan Craig on countback, something that Alan has had to suffer a
few times recently. Winners of nearest the pins were Barry Thorogood twice and Garry Garbett. Our next meeting is at Roda Golf on July 20th, 0928 start at a cost of 40 euros. List is on the board as usual or contact Alan Craig on a100ac@yahoo.co.uk or 634347788.
New season looms CD Torrevieja has made an early start to preparations for the new season, which kicks off on 3rd September. The dates of games has been declared by the Valencian football Federation, with the actual fixture list due to be published in a few weeks time. Fans are excited by the return of the team to the Vicente Garcia stadium, after playing all bar one match at the Nelson Mandela last term. The Town Hall has committed to action at the beleaguered ground, where work will begin this month. The Torry Army has welcomed this move and fans who did not attend many games last season have already said they will be back in force. Long time supporter, Hilary Wilson has her money ready for her new season ticket! The club has discussed ticket prices for the incoming season and plans to reduce gate prices by 20% from last term and slash season ticket costs by a whopping 40%. Added to some exciting developments on the park, the board hopes fans will find the return to the Vicente Garcia, lower ticket costs and an exciting team just what they want and get fully behind their club. President Vicente Boix is negotiating to bring a number of under 20 international players to the club, as they strive to develop their careers in Europe.
He values the diversity in the town and wants his team to reflect this by becoming known as CD Torrevieja International. Albatera called it a day at the end of May but have been rescued by Orihuela football club. They will now compete in group 4 but are effectively a feeder team for the third division outfit, who were not far off the play off positions in May. The Federation has published the composition of Torry's group with last year's champions Villajoyosa hoping they will once more be amongst the front runners. Relegated along with Torry, Almoradi will be also planning on being right bang in the mix for a return to the national 3rd division, as will Thader, who went close to
regaining 3rd division status in the play offs. It promises to be a competitive and demanding season ahead with Torry starting training on 24 July, allowing themselves six weeks to achieve full fitness and hit the ground running when the league programme commences. Already the club is in talks with other sides to arrange a series of mouth watering pre-season friendly matches to aid this process. The long hot summer is very much upon us and the long hard work is very much underway to restore the pride and reputation of CD Torrevieja. In every respect, it is going to be a corker! Jeff Scott Vice president CD Torrevieja
