BITE SIZE Compromis raises NEWS: questions over cats A member of the Guardia Civil and a child suffered the effects of smoke inhalation following a fire in a property in Torrevieja. The twelve year old child was taken to hospital following the incident on Sunday 27th August. The fire took place in calle San Pascual at around 16.45. Several local police officers and Guardia Civil were called to the scene. The fire, on the third floor, was quite intense and three fire engines from Torrevieja and Almoradí were called to attend. The four floor building was evacuated but by 17.25 the fire was under control. The fire started in a bedroom when someone set fire to a mattress. They then tried to extinguish the flames by taking it into the bathroom but there was dense smoke which led to the subsequent injuries. The mother of the child was also treated for shock.

The cost of keeping the parks green Looking after the green areas in Torrevieja comes at a price. They must be regularly watered during the summer months and altogether we are told, this will mean a bill of €300,000 a year. Over the past two decades the cost of watering these areas has been lower as the town hall has been able to use treated water from the treatment plant. However, it did this without Continued on page 5

This morning Compromís for Orihuela has formally asked the local government team about any actions being taken regarding the colonies of cats in Orihuela. This follows the recent news that a colony of cats on the Coast was poisoned. The eco-socialist coalition wants to know if there is any intention to solve the problem of overpopulation with an inspection and collection of data that would provide the actual number and location of these colonies across the municipality. Cats are, to some extent, necessary

“In different municipalities of the province there is evidence of action plans for the control of these colonies, meetings with associations to seek joint solutions and even training people who want to be listed as managers of feline colonies with training to take good care of these animals. These programmes have animal welfare at heart but also ensure that there is no discontent in the neighbourhood,” said Cayetano Portugués, spokesman for Compromís for Orihuela. In addition, he recalled that the City of Orihuela has received subsidies from the

BITE SIZE La Vuelta confusion NEWS: Continued from page 3 proper authorisation from the Confederation Hydrographic del Segura (CHS) The problem is that the assigned users of this water are the areas of La Pedrera and San Miguel. So far they have not been using the water from the treatment plant as there has been sufficient in the Trasvase Tajo-Seguro. Now that is to change and one of the areas does need the water. The CHS has issued fines before to the town hall. This did not stop them using the water, however, as the fine was much lower than the cost of actually purchasing the water. However, it looks as though this may now have to change.

If you were planning on going to see the ninth stage of La Vuelta, Spain’s version of the Tour de France, then you could have become a little frustrated. Over the past two weeks there have been confused messages coming from different sources about where exactly this stage of the race would start and the route it would take. It was originally planned to begin in Torrevieja. However, following the Barcelona terror attacks doubt was cast on the ability of the city to safeguard those attending and taking part. The mayor, José Manuel Dolón, was concerned that the city had insufficient police resources to protect those participants and those watching at the start of the race. According to the mayor, 53 police

Benitatxell. The PP, however, have criticised the town hall for not staging the beginning of the race, claiming that by not doing so they have lost out on €600,000 that would have come through the hostelry trade, leisure and purchases. It’s perhaps hard to see how so much additional money could be collected when many hotels and restaurants are already busting at the seams with August’s usual holiday makers. It’s the Playa de la Glea de Campoamor, that eventually saw the start of the next leg. Twenty two different teams were taking part with the Spanish team already in front. And there was plenty of security in evidence. In order to ensure the smooth running of the start 21 different streets

Tasers bought for Torrevieja 150 bullet proof vests and 50 taser guns are on order for Torrevieja. The order might actually now be processed as the file has been redirected to someone with the capacity to put the order through. There has been a delay in the meantime due to budget agreements and finding the right technician to place it. Hopefully both hurdles have now been addressed and the order can be processed.

More bins for Acequión please The residents of property around the Acequión beach in Torrevieja have denounced the town council for the dirty streets and lack of bins which they claim are a major problem in the area. They say that there is a lack of bins not only to deal with the additional residents during summer months but also the increase in business at the local restaurants. A few years ago the layout of the rubbish bins was changed and now it is unable to cope with the quantity of refuse that there is. This leads to people leaving their rubbish around the bins rather than in them with all the subsequent problems of mosquitos, cockroaches and other insects. Neighbours in the area are complaining of smells and leaking liquid containers, particular in those bins close to bars and restaurants. The rubbish generated isn’t just food and drink. As in all parts of the town, people leave old furniture and unwanted household items next to the bins too. The residents who have been complaining are angry that they have not yet received a reply following their denuncia. A spokesperson for the area explained that each bin is servicing many establishments with perhaps nine flats, four restaurants and other buildings being catered for. ‘Every day we have to call Acciona to ask them to take something away.’ Suzanne O’Connell Continued on page 6

officers were needed to cover the different points of the race. At the moment there are 160 local police officers in Torrevieja who are distributed according to three shifts, and this doesn’t take into account the 15% absenteeism rate that the force currently experiences. However, others stated that Torrevieja easily had the potential to host such an event. The inspector of the local police, Óscar Cartón, had spoken on social media to argue that Torrevieja could have played host quite safely. ‘From my point of view,’ said Óscar Cartón, ‘I believe there are sufficient police officers and with the help of the Civil Protection Service and the

were closed and the security effort included departments from Alicante, the Guardia Civil, the national police, the local police and civil protection. In cases of emergency there were 20 volunteers on hand from Civil Protection and 10 health workers from Cruz Roja. A fire engine, two other firefighting vehicles and an ambulance were all on hand. The town of Orihuela has claimed this as a victory over their tourist town neighbour, placing them as the sporting and cultural capital of the Costa Blanca. For those watching the race if you blinked you missed it. ‘I didn’t realise how fast they go,’ explained one local resident.

organising body (la Vuelta) there is help available too.’ Eventually it was to be Orihuela where the ninth stage of the race would set off from, this requiring a huge increase in security. The cyclists then passed through the edge of Torrevieja and travelled up the coast through La Mata, Guardamar, La Marina, Santa Pola, El Altet, Alicante, Vila Joiosa, Benidorm, Calpe and finishing in

The cyclists gone

‘I’ve only watched it on the television before, they were just a blur. I don’t know what speeds they were doing.’ This spectator had chosen the bridge by El Quirón hospital to watch the cyclists pass. ‘I was looking out for the cyclist wearing the red shirt. He is the leader. However, there seemed to be a few wearing red shirts so it wasn’t easy to see.’ At the front there was a small group

who were evidently in the lead and then a couple of seconds later they were followed up by a larger group of cyclists. This is one of the fastest sections of the race due to the flat terrain and their passage along the N332 in Torrevieja was over in seconds. Was it worth going?‘It was over very quickly. I’ve watched marathons before and it’s worth struggling to get the best vantage. I think I’ll watch it on television next time.’ Four hours and seven minutes after the start of the race it was Chris Froome and team Sky who came in first. Suzanne O’Connell

Patients not turning up for their hospital appointments and forcing waiting lists up have plummeted by a third in La Rioja after one trust started sending automatic text-message reminders. So the Calahorra Hospital Foundation has been sending SMS messages to all patients since the beginning of the year to remind them between two and four days before of their appointment time and specialist area. The Foundation covers doctors' surgeries as well as hospitals in several parts of La Rioja, and reports that at the San Pedro hospital nearly one in 10 patients failed to turn up for their consultations last year, rising to 14.7% in the catchment area as a whole. But the time and cost of sending text messages to everyone is far less than those involved in missed appointments, and is paying off: through having sent 64,213 SMS reminders, patients' absences without notice have fallen to 10.5% in less than eight months. And with an average of 20,000 to 22,000 missed appointments per month at various hospitals, the impact on waiting lists and health service costs is huge. If every hospital and GP clinic in Spain used the same system, it is estimated that the national health system could save millions of euros and waiting lists for everything from family doctor visits through to operations could be cut by weeks, if not months.

Fire starter Flat fire in arrested playa del Cura There has been a worrying spate of car fires over the past couple of weeks in Torrevieja. Now, a woman has been arrested on five counts of doing serious damage to the cars in the area of Mar Azul. Altogether, eight vehicles have been burnt-out in the past 14 days around avenida de Juan Austria. More fires were started in Molino del Agua although it is uncertain yet if these were carried out by the same person. The woman is 64 years old and lives in the area where the crimes were committed. She is allegedly author of five of the 11 fires set alight in stationery vehicles on public roads in the city. She is also accused of throwing corrosive products on other vehicles, resulting in damage to the paintwork. Some of the cars involved in the arson attack were high-end vehicles. The series of fires on the 10th, 20th and 21st August have alarmed the people living locally. Those vehicles which were set alight were almost completely destroyed in the flames and threatened to spread to adjacent land and buildings. It is believed that corrosive liquid was used to ensure that the cars burnt out thoroughly. The woman was eventually tracked down through the use of various private video surveillance used by neighbours in the area of La Veleta, adjacent to where the cars were set alight. The Guardia Civil found some of the materials used to ignite and feed the flames next to a refuse bin. During one incident the flames were at the point of spreading to nearby trees and properties close to the entrance to Colegio Amanecer. The Guardia Civil had interrogated the woman previously and finally decided to arrest her at her house on Tuesday afternoon. She is now in custody and awaiting a court hearing. The investigation is still open to establish links with similar fires that took place in Molino del Agua park on the Parquemar urbanisation. During this incident, four vehicles were incinerated in an area of more than six kilometres from Mar Azul, and for this reason they believe they may have been carried out by other people. Suzanne O’Connell

The fire brigade attended a fire at a fifth floor flat on Thursday August 8th. The fire started in the kitchen of the flat in a building close to playa del Cura. The alarm was raised by bathers as well as neighbours who could see the smoke coming from the flat whilst on the beach. The fire brigade, Guardia Civil and Local Police were in immediate attendance and quickly extinguished the fire which was first spotted at 12.47pm. No one was hurt but damage was done to the kitchen and to nearby furniture. The property is home to a woman and her cat who were both able to leave the apartment without any problems. According to those close by, there had been moves to completely evacuate the building which is one of the oldest and most noticeable in Torrevieja due to

its semi-circular structure. It was initially thought that assistance might be required from fire brigades in Almoradí and Orihuela, but in the end they weren’t needed and returned to base. The emergency services were soon able to leave after the fire was extinguished and extractors enabled the smoke to dissipate. What the fire did draw attention to was the inaccessibility of the building and the difficult the fire brigade had of reaching it. This area of Punta Margalla has a number of large bollards and several streets with no evacuation exit. At a time when town councils are making paseos and other areas more difficult to access for vehicles, it is worth remembering that such measures also make it more difficult for emergency vehicles to gain entry too. Hope for the municipal theatre? The mayor of Torrevieja, José Manuel Dolón, has asked for authorisation from the official school of architects to sign the ‘end of work’ certificate for el teatro municipal. This is the certificate which is required before the opening certificate or ‘licencia de apertura’ can be obtained. The mayor explained that during the time that the theatre has been closed the technicians

have been working on the project to ensure that it can open with all the necessary licences that it must have. ‘We haven’t been sleeping,’ he explains. ‘But we had to do what was required. We didn’t want the theatre to be closed either.’ The town hall has now told Acciona, to move ahead as quickly as possibly with obtaining the opening licence. Finally it looks as though we are nearly at the point

where the town could see the reopening of its much-needed theatre. Even when all the licences are obtained, it won’t just be the case of the theatre immediately opening its doors. It has been closed for a while now and will require a lick of paint and a deep clean to ensure that it is ready to welcome the public. Suzanne O’Connell

September marks the 15th Anniversary of the Help Diabetic Support Group. The group is directed by Oscar Norhona and takes place at Casa Tom in Avenida Jaca 31, San Luis. The group meet on the last Wednesday of every month at 11am and provides support and advice for those who have recently been diagnosed as well as those who have learnt to live with the condition. There is no fee for the people who attend. The group started following a chance meeting at one of the HELP monthly lunches. There was a discussion about diabetes and someone said that because of a lack of understanding of Spanish they were struggling to find out more about the condition and how to deal with it on a daily basis. Following this, the President of HELP Vega Baja was approached and the group was formed, originally under the name of DIA-AID. Now it is known more usually as the HELP Diabetic Support Group. The group aims to: 1. Provide up-to-date information about medical and practical developments in the management of diabetes

2. Use guest speakers to provide information on a variety of subjects of interest to those attending 3. Have a lively exchange of information between everyone attending 4. Enable members to take responsibility for their diabetes with the guidance and encouragement of the group Better control of the condition can often be achieved by making simple lifestyle changes and following a few do’s and don’ts. Members are encouraged to make recommendations for the group’s agenda and are encouraged to talk about any diabetic difficulties they have and any solutions they have found. If you think that you or someone you know could benefit from attending this group then please come along to the next meeting. The group are keen to welcome new members who can also contribute their own advice and experience of living with diabetes. Continuing controversy over the civil war Spain’s ability to put the divisions of the Spanish Civil War behind it is a source of wonder. The country moved on in a way that is quite exceptional. However, there are times when even the foreigners amongst them can see just how deep the wounds still are. Every year in Torrevieja, there is a dispute about the extent to which the atrocities of the war should be commemorated or not. More conservative groups tend to prefer not to open the wounds too much. However, those on the losing side are more likely to want to recognise the horrific and on going impact that the war had. We have now reached the 79th anniversary of the bombing of Torrevieja. During the incident on the 25th August 1938 19 died, 45 were seriously injured and around 200 had slight injuries. Torrevieja’s political party ‘Sueña’ has been raising its concerns that the event should be given more prominence and some action taken to erect a memorial to the victims. The erection of a monument in honour of those who died has been debated before. Spokesperson for Sueña, Pablo Samper, made public his request to find out what was planned this year to commemorate the bombing. The town hall acknowledged that there would be a tribute to the victims at 11.30am and that this would take place at the entrance to Torrevieja port. This event on the 25th August was a similar tribute as has been organised previously with the laying of flowers in the port area. However, Samper, does not consider this to be sufficient. ‘With the arrival of the new political parties in the town hall,’ explains Samper. ‘It seemed

that the taboo that had existed during the PP’s government would be lifted. That we could pay homage to those who lost their lives or were injured as a result of the cruel bombing by the Italian troops during the Civil War. However, this expectation has been quashed and we see nothing new in this respect.’ He does acknowledge however that on the 25th August 2015, only a few days after the new government was formed, history was made as all the political parties in Torrevieja, with the exception of the PP, did do homage to the dead. However, on this day, it was also promised that there would be a monument erected to remember the event on a permanent basis. This has not happened yet. The commemoration of the bombing of Torrevieja, is symbolic as a memorial to the victims of the Civil War in Spain as much as to the families of Torrevieja who were directly affected. As we come up to the event’s 80th birthday we can expect further debate next year as to how exactly it should be remembered. Suzanne O’Connell

WEEKLY EURO UPDATE All eyes were on the Federal Reserve's Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium this week and in terms of the euro, the market was keen to hear from European Central Bank president Mario Draghi and his views on the continuing strength of the currency. There was debate about quantitative easing at the conference, but Draghi has not signalled any end to the ECB’s current approach. He spoke instead about “The interdependence of research

and policymaking” and made no reference to the undue strength of the euro. This apparent lack of concern helped the euro climb by two thirds of a cent against sterling and to add half a US cent midweek. The currency was also bolstered by positive Eurozone economic statistics. The provisional PMI readings were, with the exception of the services sector across Europe which showed a drop of half a point, higher on the month and above forecast.

MAN WANTED AFTER FLEEING POLICE IN ROJALES The Guardia Civil are searching for a man who skipped a road block in Rojales and continued to Pilar de la Horadada where he abandoned the vehicle on foot after suffering a minor accident in Mil Palmeras, informed police sources. Rojales Local Police chased him and fired warning shots to dissuade the driver, who was wearing a white-shirt and denim shorts. Pilar Mayor Ignacio Ramos revealed the car had

false number plates. After a fruitless search overnight, Guardia sources said they widened the perimeter beyond Pilar. Pilar Councillor José Tomás Saura and acting Local Police chief Jesús Navarrete told residents to be calm because they are “almost 100 percent sure the individual is a common thief”. Navarrete indicated that the fugitive suffered an injury to the face as a result of the crash.

Homes & Gardens

Hedges are more eco-friendly, providing colour and habitat for birds and bees. Whilst they give just as much privacy and protection from the wind, they don’t make you feel imprisoned, but rather close to nature. Another plus is that they change according to season, often creating all year interest. You can make hedges from a wide variety of shrubs and trees; Yew (Taxus) is a great favourite as it is slow growing - so you will need to ask your nursery for mature plants if you need an instant hedge. It needs to be planted in spring or autumn with about 50cm between plants. You will need to clip it in spring and late summer until it has reached maturity and then just one tidy-up a year in September will keep it in good shape. Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens) is another good hedging plant. There are a number of options, including ‘horizontalis’ with a wide spread and the ability to make a thick hedge quickly. Myoporum, in Spanish often just called Siempreverde, is a fast growing plant with thick glossy leaves which does need regular clipping and gets rather leggy if left to its own devices. Lantana camara is a very popular contender for favourite hedge plant. You can buy a variety of colours and plant them in a row so that the different shades overlap and entwine as it grows. It does need some maintenance, but will reward you with flowers for most of the year. A spiteful hedge with prickly sprays of long, scented flowers is Berberis. It is a great intruder deterrent! Plant about 60cms apart and you will have a thick, impenetrable hedge which only needs a trim once a year after flowering. If your garden is very exposed, most of the plants already mentioned can form a windbreak,

but if you want to include hedge within your garden to divide it up, or emphasize a particular feature, think about a fragrant, low-growing herbal hedge. Shrubby herbs are native to this climate, so Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis), Lavender (Lavandula) and Bay laurel (Laurus nobilis) are naturals. One of the most versatile herbs, Bay laurel can be grown as a tall evergreen tree, but lends itself to pruning, training, growing as an espaliered plant, or even as a bonsai style herb plant. Bay plants are very attractive and its flavourful leaves that will serve a valuable function as a versatile kitchen spice. Lavender and Rosemary obviously will not grow into tall hedges, but are ideal for defining an area of the garden. They smell wonderful and both produce blue/purple flowers in the spring. They like full sun and should be planted 30-40cms apart. Pinch out the growing tips to make them branch out. Lavender flowers can be harvested when they are freshly opened and dried, hanging upside down in bunches in a cool place. You should prepare the planting area in advance, digging it deeply in the early spring and then leaving it to dry and break up a bit for a few days. Dig a trench about a metre wide and put a good layer of compost or horse manure at the bottom. This encourages the roots to keep in their own territory and stops them wandering off to rob other plants of food and water. Finishing the border with a layer of organic mulch will help prevent weed competition and conserve moisture as the border plants grow together. Stake any thin or spindly plants and water well until they are established. After that most hedges need little extra water and will give you years of privacy and pleasure. Marc Vijverberg

WELCOME TO NICE with Vivalia Travel Nice is the fifth most populous city in France and the capital of the Alpes-Maritimes département. The urban area of Nice extends beyond the administrative city limits, with a population of about 1 million in an area of 721km2 (278 sq miles).

Located in the French Riviera, on the south east coast of France on the Mediterranean Sea, at the foot of the Alps, Nice is the second-largest French city on the Mediterranean coast and the second-largest city in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region after Marseille. Nice is about 13 kilometres (8 miles) from the principality of Monaco, and its airport is a gateway to the principality as well. The area of today’s Nice contains Terra Amata, an archaeological site which displays evidence of a very early use of fire. Around 350 BC, Greeks of Marseille founded a permanent settlement and called it Nikaia, after Nike, the goddess of victory. Through the ages, the town has changed hands many times. Its strategic location and port significantly contributed to its maritime strength. For centuries it was a dominion of Savoy, and was then part of France between 1792 and 1815, when it was returned to Piedmont-Sardinia until its re-annexation by France in 1860. The natural beauty of the Nice area and its mild Mediterranean climate came to the attention of the English upper classes in the second half of the 18th century, when an increasing number of aristocratic families took to spending their winters there. The city’s main seaside promenade, the Promenade des Anglais (Walkway of the English) owes its name to visitors to the resort. For decades now, the picturesque Nicean surroundings have attracted not only those in search of relaxation, but also those seeking inspiration. The clear air and soft light have particularly appealed to some of Western culture’s most outstanding painters, such as Marc Chagall, Henri Matisse, Niki de Saint Phalle and Arman. Their work is commemorated in many of the city’s museums, including Musée Marc Chagall, Musée Matisse and Musée des Beaux-Arts. Nice has the second largest hotel capacity in the country and it is one of its most visited cities, receiving 4 million tourists every year. It also has the third busiest airport in France, after the two main Parisian ones. History The first known hominid settlements in the Nice area date back about 400,000 years; the Terra Amata archeological site shows one of the earliest uses of fire, construction of houses, and flint findings dated to around 230,000 years ago. In the 7th century, Nice joined the Genoese League formed by the towns of Liguria. In 729 the city repulsed the Saracens; but in 859 and again in 880 the Saracens pillaged and burned it, and for most of the 10th century remained masters of the surrounding country. During the Middle Ages, Nice participated in the wars and history of Italy. As an ally of Pisa it was the enemy of Genoa, and both the King of France and the Holy Roman Emperor endeavoured to subjugate it; but in spite of this it maintained its municipal liberties. The medieval city walls surrounded the Old Town. The landward side was protected by the River Paillon, which was later covered over and is now the tram route towards the Acropolis. The east side of the town was protected by fortifications on Castle Hill. Another river flowed into the port on the east side of Castle Hill. Engravings suggest that the port area was also defended by walls. Climate Nice has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate, enjoying mild winters with moderate rainfall. It is one of the warmest Mediterranean climates for its latitude. Summers are warm to hot, dry, and sunny. Rainfall is rare in this season, and a typical

July month only records one or two days with measurable rainfall. The temperature is typically above 20°C (68°F) and frequently reaches 30°C (86°F). The climate data is recorded from the airport, located just metres from the sea. Summer temperatures, therefore, are often higher in the city. The average maximum temperature in the warmest months of July and August is about 27°C (81°F). The highest recorded temperature was 37.7°C (99.9°F) on 1 August 2006. Autumn generally starts sunny in September and becomes more cloudy and rainy towards October, while temperatures usually remain above 20°C (68°F) until November where days start to cool down to around 17°C (63°F). Winters are characterised by mild days (11 to 17°C (52 to 63°F)), cool nights (4 to 9°C (39 to 48°F)) and variable weather. Days can be either sunny and dry or damp and rainy in late March, and is increasingly warm and sunny towards June. Economy and tourism Nice is the seat of the Chambre de commerce et d’industrie Nice Côte d’Azur. It manages the Nice - Côte d’Azur Airport and the Cannes - Mandelieu Airport, as well as the Port of Nice. Investors from France and abroad can benefit from the assistance of the Côte d’Azur Economic Development Agency Team Côte d’Azur. Nice has one conference centre: the Palais des Congrès Acropolis. The city also has several business parks, including l'Arenas, Nice the Plain, Nice Méridia, Saint Isidore, and the Northern Forum. In addition, the city features several shopping centres such as Nicetoile, Nice TNL, Nice Lingostière, Northern Forum, St-Isidore, the Trinity (around the Auchan hypermarket) and Cap3000 in Saint-Laurent-du-Var. Sophia Antipolis is a technology park northwest of Antibes. Much of the park is within the commune of Valbonne. Established between 1970 and 1984, it primarily houses companies in the fields of computing, electronics, pharmacology and biotechnology. Several institutions of higher learning are also located here, along with the European headquarters of W3C. The park is named after Sophie GlikmanToumarkine, the wife of French Senator Pierre Laffitte, founder of the park, and incidentally, Sophia, the goddess of wisdom. The second half of the park’s name is derived from Antipolis, the ancient Greek name of Antibes. Cuisine The cuisine of Nice is especially close to those of Provence but also Liguria and Piedmont and uses local ingredients (olive oil, anchovies, fruit and vegetables) but also those from more remote regions, in particular from Northern Europe, because ships which came to pick up olive oil arrived full of food products, such as dried haddock. Nice has a few local dishes. There is a local tart made with onions and anchovies (or anchovy paste), named Pissaladière. Socca is a type of pancake made from chickpea flour. Farcis niçois is a dish made from vegetables stuffed with a mixture of breadcrumbs, meat (generally sausage and ground beef) and herbs and salade niçoise is a tomato salad with green peppers of the Corne variety, baked eggs, tuna or anchovies, and olives.

Comaskey Properties and Spanish Solutions For some years, like many of us here, the Costa Blanca People has faced challenges. For any business, there is bureaucracy and paperwork, plus there are always difficult times to be faced, especially when of course Spain went from a flourishing economy to a real period of economic crisis, then we saw a gradual rise in fortunes once again. Now, as always, we unfortunately live through times of grave events happening from time to time Over the years we believe that the Costa Blanca People has provided the widest spectrum of information of any expat news paper on the Costa Blanca. People come to them with problems and they guide them and try to make peoples lives' easier by informing, and promoting solutions and services. They are often the first with a big news story.

18 months ago we approached Costa Blanca People for a number of reasons, but mainly because we knew they could help us deliver our business message, but just as important to us at Right Move insurance, was to work with professional people, but more than professional people, nice people which is not as easy as it sounds ! We would not hesitate to recommend the whole team that make this product so successful from our morning chat with Malc every week to Claire and her whole team, thank you, and if you believe as we do at Right Move insurance that people buy from people, you can’t go wrong with Costa Blanca People. Thank you nice smiley, happy people at CBP.

We’ve been advertising in the CostaBlancaPeople for more than ten years. You don’t stay with the same newspaper if it isn’t working, and it’s clear from our market testing that advert placement in the CostaBlancaPeople boosts our bookings. It’s not just the results we get that prompts us to advertise in the CostaBlancaPeople, though. The newspaper’s advertising department makes the whole process easy. If we’re offering a special menu or providing a unique night of entertainment, it’s no problem to run a one-off advertisement to reach out to a wide audience effortlessly. Our experience is that there is no easier way to connect with residents and holidaymakers, and no better way to do so than through the region’s most popular weekly newspaper.

N322 CBP gives a wonderful service to the English speaking community, not only British, but nowadays many nationalities speak English, so this media provides all of them with information to keep them updated. Some months ago, N332 and CBP decided to work together, and since then CBP has become the only media which offers you reliable information about traffic matters. You can read many articles in different media about the Traffic Law, but there can be mistakes because these articles are written by journalists. Only CBP publishes information provided by traffic police officers, so you know that all the information is straight from the “horse’s mouth”. Apart from giving you the best information, CBP also focuses on supporting local events and charities, consequently, they are part of the community. When a newspaper reaches its 700th edition it means that they are working in the right way and we hope our working relationship also lasts a long time. Working with the best, you are capable of achieving great things and we are delighted to have the N332 section in such a leading newspaper. Thank you very much!

Congratulations on your 700th edition. The Costa Blanca People is "the people´s paper"

Summer Schools close on a high

Time to party The Councillor for Education, Begoña Cuartero, has officially closed the Summer Schools across Orihuela, which this year have seen 100 percent of the places offered taken by local children. The Councillor came to the coast to Los Dolses School, where she shared the last day with children between the ages of 3 and 12. She said: “These children have had the opportunity to enjoy activities and games during the whole summer, including cultural and sporting visits. The schools help foster a spirit of family conciliation during the holiday months when parents have to work and children are not at school.” The Department of Education has said that a total of 578 students have taken part in the summer school program which has been organised and managed by the specialist company Oriverano. The programme took place in different educational centres in the city, districts and on the coast during the months of July and August.

Councillor Cuartero expressed her satisfaction with the development of this initiative and stressed “the great participation and demand that we have had this year has been outstanding. Not only were all of the places taken, we also had waiting list.” She explained that the program had been developed with activities that have involved professionals, associations and sports schools, who have offered practical classes in subjects such as photography, basketball or taekwondo. The children have also enjoyed cultural and tourist activities with visits and trips accompanied by the monitors and their families, such as the visit to the Casa Museo Miguel Hernández, a climb to the Seminary and Castle, a walk to Aguamarina, and trips to the María Moliner and Mudic Libraries, among others. The closing of this year’s Summer School took place in the Los Dolses CEIP with a party that included inflatable rides, water festival and painting workshops

Immigrants arrive in boats Six boats arrived on the Alicante coast on 25th August, carrying what’s believed to be around 50 immigrants desperate to start a new life in Europe. Sea Rescue arrived at three in the morning with 32 immigrants rescued from boats 45 miles off the shore of Alicante and another 13 who were found in a boat 20 miles from Torrevieja. Another seven were detained in Altea by the Guardia Civil after they disembarked in Calpe and got on board a bus going to Benidorm. The Red Cross organised help and support for those rescued. The arrival of boats has become a common feature over the last few days with them arriving not only in Alicante but also Almería, Murcia, Granada and Cadíz. It is believed that the good weather has meant so many taking the risk and setting out towards the coast of Spain. Of the six that arrived two managed to avoid being intercepted and landed on the coast of Altea and Calpe. Their occupants were able to disembark and got as far as boarding a bus to Benidorm before being apprehended in Altea. Usually there are between ten and twelve people in each of these boats but this boat had contained around 20 people, the majority of whom disappeared without being spotted. Altogether this is the thirteenth boat that has arrived in the province of Alicante since 17th April, bringing in total 103 immigrants believed to be of Algerian origin. However, many claim to be from Syria which could qualify them as refugees and prevent their expulsion. The first two boats that were spotted were seen in Cap Negret in Altea and in la Cala Le Urques in Calpe. The Guardia Civil sent out patrol boats to both places but only found the two empty boats with abandoned clothing as well as a GPS in one of the boats. They then proceeded to try and find those who had escaped but only managed to intercept the seven who were on the bus going towards

Benidorm. These seven were detained and taken to Benemérita in Altea where a group of volunteers assisted them and assessed their condition. In the early hours of the morning another alarm was raised after a third boat was discovered around 45 miles from Alicante. A sea rescue plane went to the area and identified the boat containing 11 people and a little after in the same area another boat was intercepted, this time containing ten people. At seven in the evening another boat was identified 20 miles from Torrevieja sited by sea rescue and seen to contain between 10 and 12 people. So many boats were arriving that it became difficult to get sea rescue craft out to them. La Salvamar Mirfak was already carrying 21 people and Salvamento Marítimo de Cartagena already had rescued 13. Eventually the 11 immigrants were picked up by another boat at around 2.30am. Cruz Roja sources indicate that the seven immigrants from Altea were found to be in a good condition except for one of them who was experiencing sickness, was dizzy and had a little sunburn. The six occupants of one of the boats declared themselves to be between the ages of 16 and 31 and four of them claimed to be from Syria. The remaining two are from Algeria and Morocco. It is believed that two of them might be minors between the ages of 16 and 17. If this is the case then they can avoid being sent home. They were taken to hospital where tests will try and establish their exact age. Cruz Rojas assisted those intercepted and gave them food and toiletries. They were then taken to the police station at Benidorm where the national police will proceed with their investigations prior to returning them to their country. It is believed that a sixth boat has also been identified but news sources were waiting further information about this. Suzanne O’Connell

PROPERTY BLOG

Do’s and don’ts when you’re leaving your holiday home for sale Rebecca Serwotka

Your favourite local property expert, of Inmobiliaria Real Estate Agents in Ciudad Quesada & published author of “Moving Forward – 25 Essential Rules For Buying & Selling Real Estate Without Going Crazy.” Request your FREE copy today! At this time of year many homeowners start returning to their respective countries, leaving their properties in the hands of their trusted Real Estate Agent to sell for them. This is a regular occurrence and not a problem for any professional Real Estate Agent. However, please remember when leaving your property on the market vacant, there are some dos and don’ts that you must consider before closing the door and saying ‘hasta la vista’. The electric I have had the pleasure of showing a vacant property where the owners had returned to their country, turned the electric off and forgotten they had left food in the refrigerator. You can imagine the smell that greeted us when I opened the door. Please either leave your electric on, or empty the fridge with the door left slightly open. The water supply Many people like to turn the water off too when vacating. If you’re going to do this, please be sure to let your agent know where the connection is to turn it back on if necessary. Bugs This time of year, those little pesky ants are frantically

looking for water and somehow find their way into your home. Unfortunately the only way to combat them, is to make sure the seals are tight on the windows and there are no crumbs left out anywhere. A can of bug spray left in a cupboard is always useful. Swimming pools By dosing them up with chemicals and keeping the filtration pump on its timer, should prevent them from looking like pea soup. Or even easier, employ a pool cleaner. Please don’t empty them. Keeping them full will prevent any cracking, a cause of potential leaks. Whilst your property is on the market, there is nothing more appealing than seeing the glistening waters of a full, clean swimming pool. Security My last rule is always lock your home as normal, whether your property is on the market or not. Again, any Real Estate professional will be used to going into dark homes where the shutters are all down. Never been a problem for me, and never will be. Like anywhere in the world, security first. Although I’ve had more than my fair share of ‘mess’ to clean up or smells to get rid of, by leaving your vacant home ready for a viewing, will make it a more pleasurable first impression for any buyer and a happier experience for your agent. For more information and guidance on buying and selling, please contact us and we will send you our FREE e-book or log on to: www.homes4u.es/new-kindle-e-book to request the link. Think property? BRITISH OUTLAWS: HIGHWAYMEN, PIRATES & ROGUES

Crime was endemic for a period of time in the British 18th century, on the open road thieves and robbers would rob with impunity, on the high seas pirates roamed and closer to home rogues threatened the lives and livelihoods of ordinary citizens. Nowhere was safe, least of all towns and cities where from their own underworld felons robbed, burgled and cheated. Across the country there was no established police force and even though the ultimate penalty was death, who was there to enforce it? In this three part series historian Dr. Sam Willis, wants to explore the world of the British outlaw, the original anti-hero in an age of swashbuckle, daring and style.

Spanish van loaded with gas canisters found in Rotterdam Dutch officials found a van with Spanish licence plates loaded with gas canisters late Wednesday, after cancelling a rock concert in Rotterdam following a terror attack warning.

The Dutch national broadcaster NOS showed images of police officers, wearing bullet-proof vests combing in the area. The Netherlands has so far been spared from the slew of terror attacks which have rocked its closest European neighbours in past years. But amid a number of scares here in recent months, and reports that people linked to some of the attacks may have crossed briefly into the country, concerned top Dutch security and intelligence

T

he Spanish driver of the van "was arrested and taken to the police station," Rotterdam police said in a Tweet. Dutch bomb squad officials "were investigating the van," they added, which had been found close to the Maassilo concert hall in the city. It comes less than a week after twin car-bomb attacks in Spain killed 15 people on Thursday. Those attacks were claimed by the Islamic State group. Earlier in the evening the Dutch authorities had decided to cancel the concert by American rock group Allah-Las in Europe's largest port city after receiving a tip-off from Spanish police around 5:30pm about a possible terror attack. The Maassilo venue in Rotterdam announced that "due to a terrorist threat, the Allah-Las concert will not take place this evening, on police orders". Rotterdam police confirmed the decision was taken due to a "possible terrorist threat" and that the van's driver had been arrested. The city's mayor, Ahmed Aboutaleb, told a hastilycalled press conference that an investigation would be launched to determine if the van was linked to the reported terror threat. He added it was important not to jump to any hasty conclusions. The building where the concert was to be held, which can hold about 1,000 people, was evacuated and was searched by the Dutch anti-terror squad.

officials have been keeping a wary eye on events. "The threat level to the Netherlands is substantial which means that an attack in the Netherlands is a real danger and can actually happen," national counterterrorism coordinator Dick Schoof warned in May 2016. Schiphol airport, outside Amsterdam, is one of Europe's busiest air hubs. It was the scene of a latenight evacuation in April 2016 when a drunken, homeless man sparked a security scare, just a few weeks after the Brussels metro and airport suicide bombings. And in November, Rotterdam airport was the target of a reported terror threat, which also turned out to be false.

Cabo Roig clean-up The local council will this week give a deep clean to the public footpaths all along the Cabo Roig Strip. Also much needed small waste bins will be installed and provision will be made to empty them regularly. Extra larger bins for waste and recycling will be brought from Orihuela to help

businesses in Orihuela-Costa especially following warnings by the local police that glass and bottles could only be placed in bins up to 10pm. This new rule would have caused great difficulties for bars and restaurants because of the sheer volume of waste that would need to be stored

The Strip

cope with the huge increase of waste generated during the busy summer tourist season on the coast. These decisions were made at a meeting organised by Pedro Mancebo of the Orihuela Chamber of Commerce between Damaso Aparicio local councillor for street cleaning and waste collection and members of the “Cabo Roig Strip Business Association” and “O.C. Avanza Business and Entrepreneurs Association”. The urgent meeting was held to discuss different issues affecting

inside the bars and restaurants for long periods of time causing safety, health and other risks and maybe even fines from the health department. During the meeting the town hall representatives assured the business owners that the town hall concerns were about kitchen waste and domestic rubbish only being placed in the bins between 9pm and midnight. The town hall made it clear that all recyclable materials such as glass and paper could be placed in the recycle containers at any time of day. In return the

business owners said that they would dispose of glass and other waste in an effective and quiet manner to minimize the noise for neighbours. Damaso Aparicio and the waste collection manager for the area also highlighted the need for a deep cleaning in the whole of the Cabo Roig area, especially on “The Strip” where thousands of tourists and residents walk every day. The image of this area concerns the business owners as they endeavour to keep the area tidy. The town hall has promised to increase its efforts to keep the area property maintained. A campaign of deep cleaning of footpaths will occur every Monday and Friday until the end of the summer season. On behalf of the Chamber of Commerce, Pedro Mancebo pointed out that there are many other business areas in Orihuela Costa that need more attention from the Town Hall and he obtained the commitment from the councillor to address the problems everywhere. Future meetings will be held with business owners in different areas of Orihuela-Costa. Also discussed were the illegal street traders who place their wares wherever they like, whereas the legal businesses are limited to certain small spaces that they need to pay the town hall for, in addition to all the other taxes that they pay. According to the Chamber of Commerce these hundreds of illegal traders do not have permission to trade in the streets, they don’t have proper invoices for their goods and don’t pay any taxes or social security and they unfairly damage legal businesses and traders from the Thursday and Saturday Markets.

Increased security for Tomatina In just a week’s time the population of a small Valencia province market town will double as visitors from every continent hurl ripe tomatoes at each other – and security has been upped drastically in light of the Barcelona terror attacks. Two lorry-loads of salad fruit – 160 tonnes in total – will end up coating the faces and clothing of thousands of Japanese and Australian tourists, who are some of the most regular at the unusual festival in Buñol. A total of 22,000 people will be on the street next Wednesday wearing goggles and their worst clothes – in a town where the resident population is around 10,000. This year, security was already going to be increased due to the sheer size of the festival, known as the Tomatina, and in line with Spain's terror alert level 4 which was introduced two years ago as a tool to enable the public to stay safe. But plans have been revised further since the massacres in Barcelona and Cambrils, and a total of 740 police, firefighters, Civil Protection volunteers and paramedics will be on duty. And this is not the final figure – more may be brought in at the last minute. In recent years, Buñol council has been charging visitors €10 for tickets to the Tomatina, given how much it has grown, in order to limit numbers and help with funding. As always, it has set aside a maximum of 5,000 for residents, which are free, and so far only 250 of the total of 22,000 are left – but these are likely to be snapped up

before the date. The Tomatina is believed to have its roots in the 1950s when a group of bored youths started throwing ripe fruit at each other during the weekly market and, after being arrested, decided to 'celebrate' the fact on the same date every year. Now, travellers and locals wait patiently as the lorries pour out their tomato loads on the street, and a siren goes off to mark the start, before which no fruit-throwing is allowed.

An hour later, another siren goes off to signify the end. Rules are few, but in general, no tomatoes may be thrown at people's faces, and nobody is permitted to grab others' clothing. Recommendations include wearing goggles, and T-shirts which participants do not expect ever to wear again as they will be too badly stained. Showers are set up on site for tomatocovered tourists to wash the worst of the mess off themselves.

THE FULLL MONTY 10.00pm - BBC 1

After losing his job at a steel factory, Gaz (Robert Carlyle) learns that his wife wants to sue him for missed child support payments. Desperate for money, Gaz and his friend Dave (Mark Addy) decide to create their own male striptease act. The two friends recruit four more men, including their former foreman (Tom Wilkinson) and a security guard (Steve Huison). The group promises that their show will succeed because they are willing to go “the Full Monty”.

Hundreds of migrants rescued in hours... Spain is bracing itself for the arrival of greater numbers of migrants arriving on its shores, with more than 600 people having been rescued in the waters around the Straits of Gibraltar and the western edge of the Mediterranean in less than 12 hours on Wednesday, the largest number in a single day this year, according to official figures. The number of arrivals has been increasing steadily over the last year and continue to rise through this summer. After several days of wind from the east that delayed the rickety fishing boats and dinghies used by migrants, on Wednesday, some 15 such vessels adrift in Spanish waters were rescued by the authorities. The decision by Spain to close its land crossing with Morocco at the exclave of Ceuta to goods traffic has likely prompted the spike in numbers in recent days. This border was reopened on Thursday after being closed to merchandise for eight days over security concerns following a security breach which saw nearly 200 would-be migrants rushing through the gate in the early hours of Monday. Up to July 18, the number of migrants to make it to Spain by sea had risen to 7,547, from a total of 10,751 who had made it into Spanish territory by other means, mainly by crossing the borders at Ceuta and Melilla, in Morocco. This was a 104.2 percent increase on the same period in 2016. In a report published earlier this week, Frontex, the EU’s border agency, said 2,300 migrants made it to Spain in July, more than four times as many as

a year earlier. Arrivals in Spain in the first seven months were “around 11,000, already exceeding the number for all of 2016,” it said. For the moment, the numbers are set to fall far short of the 39,180 migrants who arrived in Spain in 2006. Spain’s Maritime Rescue, along with Civil Guard units, the Red Cross and other emergency services began their rescue work in the early hours of Wednesday morning coordinated from Tarifa and were kept busy until past midday. Further east along the Mediterranean coast, more than 160 migrants were picked up off the coast of Almería. Ana Rosado of local NGO Pro-Human Rights Andalusia confirmed that the 600 people rescued on Wednesday was the highest number so far this year. “They are looking for ways to arrive and when one route is closed, as has happened with the closure of the border in Ceuta, then pressure increases on another,” said Rosado. She also pointed out that many of the boats that arrived on Wednesday were wooden fishing vessels: “These are usually cases of people who between them have bought the boat,” rather than having paid the criminal gangs that make a living shipping people into Spanish waters.

Restaurant Review

The Hebridean – a hidden gem for food lovers

I had heard some great feedback on The Hebridean and seeing the excellent reviews on its facebook page and trip adviser only made me look forward to trying this newly opened restaurant even more. Nestled in Blue Lagoon, opposite the arch, the restaurant has both a terrace for al fresco dining and an airconditioned formal restaurant. We chose to eat inside and were offered drinks straight away. The wine list had a great selection – from prosecco and rose to Pinot Grigio and merlot - and the restaurant also boasts a fully stocked bar. We opted for a glass (or two) of the house dry white wine which was crisp, slightly fruity and very enjoyable whilst we deliberated the choices on the menu. There were two menus to choose from; a set Menu del Noche of thee courses for 18.95 and the full evening menu. I always think its sign of a good menu when there are several choices you really like the sound of and want to eat, and this was the case for both of us at the Hebridean – and

on each course. For my starter I was torn between the muscles in white wine and cream with crusty bread or the Mackerel and John between the traditional Scottish dish Cullen Skink and the home-made pate. There was also a soup of the day, deep fried brie wedges and a vegetarian balsamic cherry tomato and mozzarella bruchetta. In the end the warm fillet of mackerel with orange and potato salad and the Whiskey and chicken liver pate won out. Whilst we were waiting for the starters we were served an appetiser with compliments of the chef. This was a gorgeous salmon and cucumber mousse, beautifully presented in sea shells and served with traditional oat cakes. The starters arrived and were stylishly presented. John’s pate was really tasty and served with tostadas, but the star of the show was an amazing spicy chutney flavoured with cumin which accompanied the dish. My mackerel fillet was soft and full of smoky flavour which was accentuated by the delicate fruity salad. For main course I opted for my favourite of lamb shank and John an 8oz peppered Aberdeen Angus sirloin. The beef olives stuffed with haggis and the Highlanders chicken with haggis and whiskey cream were close contenders. When the dishes were served the lamb looked succulent and fell off the bone. It had been slow roasted for three hours with mint, garlic and rosemary and it was delightful. The meat was tender and full of flavour and a very generous portion. The mustard mash had just the right amount of kick and the carrot mash and green beans

were cooked to perfection, and all tasted wonderful coated in the minted lamb gravy. John’s steak was served just as he loves it ‘blue’ and he said it is undoubtedly one of the best steaks he’s ever had. John chose hand cut chips with his meal and again, I have to say they were some of the best we have tasted (I can never resist stealing a few); crispy on the outside and light and fluffy inside. By now both John and were pretty full, but the homemade dessert sounded far too good. I really wanted the cheese board, especially when I seen one coming from the kitchen. However, we decided to share the traditional Scottish dessert of Cranachan made with oats, whiskey and cream. This was a great choice as although it looked and tasted luxurious it was light and not too rich for the end of meal. Not only did the Hebridean have excellent food, it has a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. The service was very good and the small touches made all the difference; gaps between courses, noticing when you glass is nearly empty, music that added to the ambience and attention to detail. The Hebridean is run by husband and wife team Kevin and Lillian, with Kevin creating the delightful dishes in the kitchen and Lillian making sure that customers are well looked after front of house. Overall this restaurant is a hidden gem and is defiantly destined to become one of the coasts best restaurants. I recommend you try it for yourself and guarantee you will return. Remembering Elvis and raising funds The 16th of August marked 40 years since the death of Elvis Presley. In memory of The King, a charity night was held at Quesada Fish & Chips Restaurant, in order to raise funds for The Samaritans in Spain. A total of 170 people attended and thoroughly enjoyed Danny Fisher’s tribute to Elvis. Once again, diners dug deep in their pockets and the fantastic sum of 1,291 euros was raised for the charity. Elvis would approve.

The next charity night at Quesada Fish & Chips will be on Tuesday 19th September, when, the ever popular, Richie Alexander will be helping to raise funds for the Children’s Care Home in Elche. Tickets at 10 euros are available from the Restaurant, The Post Room Benijofar; The Card Place in Benimar and REDZ cafe bar in Quesada. All charity events at this venue have been sold out well before the night, so early booking is recommended.

Arts, crafts and fun in Aspe Every year the small town of Aspe holds a fair at the beginning of September. This year the Town Hall has decided to make it a real Craft Fair, with demonstrations of old crafts, workshops for children and lots of entertainment, from cabezudos (people walking in the street wearing gigantic papier-mache heads) and music at the official opening, to puppet shows, stilt walkers and in the evenings fire jugglers. The fair will be held in the lovely Plaza Mayor, on 2nd and 3rd September, in the shade of enormous trees and a setting of old buildings and beautiful arches. Around twenty craftsmen and women will not only set up shop to sell their work, but will actually be at work in the fair to show the love and attention they give to each item they make. For the younger visitor there will be lots of activities: a small Ferris wheel, workshops, old fashioned games and competitions. A local potter and several lace makers will participate and Amata, the craft association organising the market, will contribute demonstrations of weaving on an Iberian loom, book binding and making recycled paper. The stalls offer an array of unique gifts from ceramics and pottery, beautifully hand-made felt bags, soft toys, funny hats, leather belts made to measure and much more. There will be several stalls with designer jewellery in alpaca, macramĂŠ, porcelain, ceramics and paper. The fair opens on Saturday 2nd of September at 11 o'clock with music and cabezudos; opening times, both Saturday and Sunday, will be from 11 am till 2 pm and then again from 5pm till 10pm. Aspe is a small town 8 kms from Elche and can be reached easily from both from the A7 and the A31 motorway. For more information in English call 639 979 678

or visit www.amata.es/sp_foto.html where you can have a look at photographs of other fairs organised by Amata.

like seems it ell Benidorm Tina has made quite a name for herself after her show at Hillside the other week. So many people have come up to me to ask where they can see her again that I thought I had better let you all know straight away. This coming Saturday 2nd September you can see her in all her shimmery dress glory at The Club in Quesada. You will need to book for this venue, as I hear that numbers are limited. If you haven’t seen Dave Macleod yet, you have three chances to see him this week. Dave is a great vocalist and his tribute to the stars has become very popular. His Neil Diamond sound a like songs are quite uncanny. But his music also includes the likes of meatloaf, boy bands and loads of toe tapping songs that make you have to get up and dance. You can find Dave at The Orange Bar in Entre Naranjos on Thursday, Hillside in La Marina on Friday and La Pedrera Camping in Bigastro on Saturday. Speaking of tributes, my world travelling Phil Collins will be back for a short time to astound audiences over the weekend before jetting off again. Rob Lewis it has to be said is an unassuming man in private life, but when he gets on that stage he IS Phil Collins with bells on. No wonder really that he has an ever growing fan base who are mesmerised by the talent that just oozes out of every pore when he is on stage. His music not only encompasses Phil Collins and Genesis as an avid dancer himself, Rob fills the dance floor with other genres such as Soul, Motown, Blue Brothers etc. His show is one of action and powerful music that delights the eyes and ears. Find him at Chemie’s in Villamartin Plaza on Friday. He will be at New York’s bar in Lo Santiago on Saturday for a special 21st Birthday celebration party and finishes the weekend on Sunday at YOLO on Cabo Roig Strip. If you are round El Raso way on Saturday, The Med continues it’s programme of good food, cocktails and entertainment with Diva songstress Sharni. This lady who hails from Calpe has one BIG voice that certainly projects the likes of Celine Dion, Adele, Cher and any other diva you could wish for. The show starts at 8pm. As always, if you would like your events listed, please email me full plenty of time in details to:letsrockshowslive@gmail.com. Venues needing acts can find me all over Facebook (bit of an addict ha, ha) or go to my website www.lrshows.com or call the hotline on 634 332 354 Keep Entertainment Live on the Costa Blanca Jax Lawson xx

Final terrorist shot dead by Police The suspected van driver in the Barcelona terrorist attack, who is was feared had fled over the borer to France, has been shot dead by Spanish police. Younes Abouyaaqoub, the man suspected of driving the van in a terrorist attack in Barcelona Which left 13 people dead and over 100 people injured, has been shot dead by police in the town of Subirats, an hour from Barcelona. He was shot from a distance of between 10 to 15 meters, police sources said. They added that he appeared to be wearing an explosives vest, which turned out to be fake. The 22-year-old was the subject of an intensive search after being identified by authorities as the likely driver in the attack. Authorities in Catalonia had called on the public to help with the search, distributing flyers describing the physical appearance of the 22-year-old who was born in Morocco but grew up in the small town of Ripoll, in the foothills of the Pyrenees.

BRITS ARRESTED FOR BEING DRUNK WHILE FLYING IS UP The number of Britons detained when drunk in British airports and on outbound flights to destinations such as Palma, Eivissa or Alicante increased by 50 percent last year. Between Feb 2016 and Feb this year, 387 people were arrested for being drunk, compared to 255 in the previous year. Most drunkenness was captured on flights to the Baleares and the Costa Blanca. In July 2016 the aviation industry introduced a voluntary code of good practice to attack this problem, to which adhered most of the airlines.

However, according to the British Unite union which represents most British cabin crews (TCP), more than half responded to a questionnaire on their personal experiences as witnesses to the facts. More than quarter of the cabin crew staff were unaware of the code for good practice, and of those who knew about it, only 2 percent thought it was working. Only 14 percent of the cabin crew staff confirmed they had seen drunkenness on board several flights leaving Britain, while 16 percent claimed passenger conduct had worsened since the code was introduced.

MAGNETS 2017 - “Follow Me” The excitement on the children's faces show how much they enjoy being at MAGNETS. The exhilarating games played outside with great enthusiasm and competitiveness leads on to the children

alternate weeks by Steve and Irene-Maria, portrayed Peter the 'Rock' who left his fishing nets to follow Jesus, heard all He taught, participated in the Last Supper, let his Master down in His hour of need but

coming inside the La Siesta Church building as they wait in anticipation for Rosa. She is Steve and Irene-Maria's little puppet who appears each morning with Steve to explain the theme of that day's story. The action songs are delivered with gusto as the children sing along and move to the words and music. A new song, partly in Spanish and partly in English, went down well with everyone, as did a song specially written for this year's MAGNETS by Steve and Irene-Maria about Peter the Fisherman. A variety of memory verses are taught from the Bible reflecting this year's theme of 'Follow Me' looking at the life of Peter whom Jesus called to be one of His first disciples. The stories, which are shared in

was graciously restored after Jesus rose from the grave. All the children listened intently to the stories for afterwards there was a quiz to test their knowledge, and the mass of hands stretching up in the air showed that they knew the answers. Before ending with juice and biscuits a craft item is made by the children to reinforce the theme of that day's story. These items are usually taken home to help the children remember what they were taught that day. One day, however, the thrust of the story was how we can use our God given talents to serve others, so each child was shown how to make and decorate a card, which they signed, then all the cards were collected and delivered to elderly folk living in a residential home.

The final day is awaited with great expectation by all the children as it is prizegiving. Each child who attends receives a bagful of prizes, with those in attendance every day also gaining a special prize. All the adult helpers also receive a prize on the last day. This is the fourteenth year Steve and Irene-Maria

have been offering this Children's Holiday Club in Torrevieja, all for free. 'We look forward to it every year,' said Steve, 'and when you hear of one young lad saying to his grandmother, totally unprompted, "Granny, it's now August and we can go to MAGNETS!" you can understand why.'

Brian from Torrevieja asks: I apologise but I think you have covered this before but I can’t find the original article. I bought a new Lenove laptop running Windows 10 which came with a trial version of Microsoft 365 Office app which was already installed. I rather like it but it is now saying it will expire in 14 days and its €100 to buy which seems a bit excessive as I only write the odd letter now and then. I have tried the free Open Office but its way too complicated for what I want to do and I remember you recommending an alternative. Aunty Says: Hello Brian. There is free basic word processing app bundled with Windows called Wordpad. This will do pretty much does everything that most of us require, plus it is laid out very similar to Microsoft Word. Click in on the start icon and type WORDPAD and then double click on the top one in the list that pops up. Josh via email asks: Hello, I have read many times your suggestions to run Malwarebytes but when I have run the scan the number of items listed is very long and very daunting! Are there any things I should watch out for? Aunty Says: Hi Josh. Malwarebytes will find things like Spyware and Potentially Unwanted Programs (PUPS) and it will often find a lot of things which have built up simply

by using the internet. I always leave Malwarebytes to get on with its job without even looking at what it has found and I’ve yet to run into any problems after all these years. Karen via email asks: I am thinking of uninstalling AVG free from my computer as it is slowing it down on startup. I can't seem to disable the update on startup. I have CCleaner, Malwarebytes and Spywareblaster (free). Is that enough to keep it safe, and am I wrong to blame AVG? It seems worse since I updated it recently. I have version 16.

Aunty Says: Hi Karen. AVG used to be my favorite free antivirus program but it does seem to have gone the same way as a lot of the old ones and is so over bloated it seems to cause as more headaches than it fixes. You will still need an antivirus program alongside the two anti spyware programs so once you have uninstalled AVG the built in Windows Defender should switch itself on automatically. Type DEFENDER into the search bar to check its status. Email your questions to auntyvirus@costablancapeople.com and I will see you all next week

Dolores exhibition An exhibition of paintings and artwork by local artist Ronen Zlotogoura will be taking place at the new Dolores cultural centre from 9th to 19th September. The exhibition, which is entitled Naturalism, will highlight the treatment of forms, colours and space as they appear in nature. Ronen specialises in hyperrealism which are paintings that look like high resolution photographs but are actually hand painted. Due to his background in the auto body repair industry his usual medium is

Stunning artwork on display

airbrushing using automotive paints. He has applied his technique to canvas, metal panels, wall murals and vehicles such as cars, motorbikes and boats. Combining his passion of cars and fine art he has created a collection of paintings that showcase the elegant styles and designs of both classic and modern super cars. Having moved from London to Dolores 14 years ago, Ronen has made a name for himself for producing very high quality artwork. As well as serving his private

collectors he continues to personalise motorbikes on a regular basis for Harley Davidson Alicante, and teaches art classes every Monday and Thursday morning at his studio in Dolores. At the exhibition you will also be able to see his beautiful water colour paintings of

quaint Spanish lanes in the old part of Altea. Admission is free and everybody is invited to the inauguration on Saturday the 9th September at 8.00pm when refreshments will be served. From 10-19th September the exhibition opening times will be 5.00pm - 7.00pm, except for the 15th when it will be closed for the day. The cultural centre is situated at Calle San Antonio, 2, 03150 Dolores, Alicante. For more information contact Ronen on 653 401 856 or ronen@zlotogoura.com Alternatively visit www.zlotogoura.com

Government gives cash for IT training for youngsters Training in IT, internet and general technology for young jobseekers will be provided free thanks to a government initiative costing €18.36 million, the ministry of energy, tourism and digital agenda has announced. This will up the total budget towards employment creation to €24.1m, which will benefit job-hunters in 14 of Spain's 17 autonomously-governed regions. Companies, associations and foundations will receive the money in order to provide 32 training projects , each receiving between €100,000 and €2m. With today's modern job market demanding bangup-to-date IT and online skills, many older workers do not have the knowledge to compete and even young adults straight from school or college may have already been left behind if they have been unable to find work recently, given the fast-paced changes in technology and software and the growing use of social media for professional means. Also, specialist IT jobs, including programme design and trouble-shooting are among those roles which, even with nearly one in five working-aged adults out of a job, are very difficult to fill – and are some of the best-paid, most-exportable and offer the most flexible conditions.

Time to go Home This weekend marks the end of the summer road campaigns with “Retorno del verano”, when traffic starts to return from holiday destinations such as the coast and mountains to inland areas of Spain. The special operation will run from Thursday 31 August to Sunday 3 September, when more than 6 million vehicle movements are anticipated, an increase on previous years, although spread over an additional day, Thursday. There will be restrictions on the movement of some freight and none emergency road works will be suspended. There will also be additional lanes created in some areas in order to maximise the space available for traffic. Drivers are advised to check their vehicle before a long journey, looking for any signs of potential wear, damage or risk, take frequent breaks, take your time and plan your route, allowing extra time on the way, and ensure compliance with the law at all times, including the avoidance of alcohol and drugs, ensuring that all vehicle occupants use the seatbelts, and children are seating in the correct seats, i.e. not the front, but occupying a seat suitable for them. In order to ensure the safe flow of traffic, around 20,000 people will be on duty, including thousands of Guardia Civil traffic officers, assisted by staff employed by the DGT directly, plus specialist technical personnel, employees of conservation companies and other emergency services personnel, all of whom will work together so that drivers can make a safe trip.

Tips for a safer weekend If you don´t have to travel this weekend, then the best advice is to avoid doing so. However, you can also plan your journey around the quieter times. Sunday afternoon is likely to be the busiest, as well as Friday evening. Plan the trip by the safest route to avoid unforeseen events. The DGT has several channels such as the DGT free app, the twitter accounts @informacionDGT and @DGTes, and radio broadcasts, alerting the real-time traffic situation and any incidents that may exist. Of course, never use the apps or your device if you are driving, ask a passenger to check, or find a safe, convenient and legal place to stop and check. Check the vehicle before setting off, preferable the day before and also just before you set off. Good maintenance improves road safety. If your vehicle is not in the best conditions, opt for another means of transport. In the last year, 4% of the vehicles involved in an accident did not have an ITV in order. Respect the speed established on each road and maintain the safety distance with the vehicle in front. Take breaks every two hours, fatigue and sleep are deadly when driving. Do not drink alcohol or use drugs when driving. All occupants of the vehicle must wear a seat belt. If children are less than 135 cm tall, they must sit in the rear seats with their corresponding child restraint system. On conventional roads, take into

account the increase of bicycles and pedestrians during the summer that cross roads that connect nearby towns. Adapt your driving to the characteristics of the road (changes of gradients, curves, narrow roadways etc.), and the weather conditions. If you are a bicycle user, remember that in addition to wearing a helmet, you have to ride with lights and reflective garments at night, and must have a bell. In the case of pedestrians, if you walk on roads out of town, remember that they must do so on the left, facing oncoming traffic, and if it is at night or in meteorological or environmental conditions that significantly reduce visibility, you should wear a high visibility vest or other reflective garment. If walking in groups, you must also display a red light at the back and a white light at the front of your party. Traffic characteristics Remember that traffic in the summer presents characteristics different from those that occur at other times of the year and this must be taken into account. An increase in the number of longdistance journeys both on working days and especially on weekends. Less congestion in the accesses to the big urban nuclei during the peak hours of working days in the entrance and exit to the places of work. Higher density of traffic on secondary roads. Intense traffic on roads that connect coastal towns and coastal tourist areas with the beaches during all days of the week. Greater presence of cyclists and pedestrians on the road. Increased circulation throughout the road network of foreign registered vehicles.

N332 Now Available on Android The official N332 Android App is now available on Google Play. It features all of the information from the website, in the palm of your hand (or tablet) and will send you occasional notifications about campaigns or special notices. The app is FREE to download and install, so have a look today. Search N332 in Google Play, or visit the N332 website, n332.es, for a direct link to

download it. By the way, if you are wondering about an Apple version, this MAY happen in the future, but Apple charge higher fees for submitting apps, and as the project is run by volunteers we don´t wish to pay their fees, but through the generous support of our sponsors in the future, it is on a list of future project investments. Google Play and the Google Play logo are trademarks of Google Inc.

Increase in the number of sports activities used by the road for its development, for which complementary traffic measures will be adopted. Increase in drivers in unfamiliar territory, who may change speed, course or direction without warning, on account of being confused by their surroundings.

Also remember that teams of people will be on the roads to help you. If you get into difficulty, you can call the Guardia Civil (in Spanish), on 062, or the emergency coordination centre, 112, who speak a variety of languages, including English.

ABBEY ANGLING Our Second Open Walk-Off Match was fished at the El Bosquet Complex on 8th August. With Bill Reade taking the top honours once again, and also breaking the lake record with a great weight of 50.220kgs, coming in 2nd was Neil McBirnie with just under 33kgs and followed in 3rd spot by Richard King with just over 19kgs. Well done, once again, to Bill! 1st Bill Reade with 50.220kgs fishing the pole and monkey using bread and pellet 2nd Neil McBirnie with 32.760kgs fishing the pole using pellet up in the water 3rd Richard King with 19.220kgs fishing the pole using pellet and corn We fished this week’s Open Match at the Embalsa de la Pedrera on 22nd August. The water is receding fast and with the temperature very high, this could be the cause of it not fishing very well, also for some reason the Barbel are not feeding which does not help. Taking the honours with a clear victory was Dave Hutchinson with just under 14kgs, with Richard Wood and Bill Reade taking the second and third spot. 1st Dave Hutchinson with 13.680kgs, fishing the pole feeder using pellet 2nd Richard Wood with 6.470kgs, fishing the feeder using pellet 3rd Bill Reade with 5.840kgs, fishing

the feeder using pellet An Open Walk-Off Match was also held on 23rd August at the El Bosquet Complex. The fish have now finished spawning and cleaned off, and the water is abundant with a myriad of small fry. Neil won the match yet again with another ton plus bag i.e. 48.62kgs, taken on pellet. Coming in second with just over 25kgs was Dave Hoare and following up in the rear for third place was myself with just over 23kgs. 1st Neil McBirnie with 48.620kgs 2nd Dave Hoare with 25.040kgs 3rd Terry Screen with 23.260kgs All fishing the pole using pellet There are still some vacancies available for membership at the club All details are available on our new website abbeyangling.es or from me on 965 328 368.

Bettas Torrevieja RFC Juniors growing as well Not only are the numbers of Bettas Torrevieja RFC growing, but also the junior section of the club equally now. For a team that only started just a few months ago this is great news and fantastic progress and all down to the hard work of the whole club from the players to the committee. Over the weekend they had 11 ladies and 8 kids training at 11.30 on Sunday morning. Considering the summer is still here and people are working and kids are away, these numbers are excellent and looking forward to seeing a full compliment of players down training over the next few weeks. You never know if enough seniors go down there might just get a senior team going, but the main aim at the moment is to get the ladies team ready for playing friendlies and kid’s teams up and running. On top of this they had a guest

coach from Ireland from the Abbeyfeale RFC helping to coach on the beach and at the athletics ground, which was great experience for everybody at the club seeing a different approach to training. All ages and abilities are welcome and remember in rugby there is always a place for everyone no matter, as against in other sports no. So looking forward to seeing plenty more players down training, juniors, ladies and men. For training this week it would be best to contact Javi on the number below to check where the training is, as on Wednesday they are no sure if it will be on the beach, at Naufragos Beach Torrevieja, or the athletics track from 20.30-22.00 and on Sunday in the morning at the athletics track at 11.30. Rockets Golf Society August Away Day

LA VUELTA COMES TO ORIHUELA COSTA

Down the AP7 to Roda Golffor our Away Game in August. Coming in with a massive 39 points to take victory in the Gold Category was Efin Arfer Williams. In second place with 36 points was Peter Daggatt and Ron Swift took third with 34 points. Andy Billings scored 33 points to take victory in the silver category with Paul Mutter coming in with 27 points to take second place and in third place with 26 points was Graham Knight.

La Vuelta – the third of the Great Tours of Cycling – came to Orihuela Costa at the weekend but if you looked at the coverage from local media it didn’t even register. The local Government of Orihuela City.made very little effort to publicise the event in advance and only sent out information to local media – including Costa Blanca People - last Wednesday, after we had gone to print on our previous issue. The event website was confusing as it claimed the stage was starting in “Orihuela: Cuidad del poeta Miguel Hernandez” yet the description suggested it was starting somewhere in Torrevieja without being overly specific as to where. However, the neutral start commenced next to La Glea beach, Campoamor. Despite this there was quite a reasonable turn out for the start which is testament to our local people’s knowledge from other sources of information. Indeed, I spoke to a number of people and one of them, Patrick Forde from Galway told us: “We only found out about it this morning and only because my daughter picked up a leaflet from one of the sponsors. Good job she understands Spanish as we would never have found out and we are massive cycling fans so to be here is incredible”. Elsewhere along the route, through Torrevieja, up the N332 – causing long tailbacks in both directions – the peloton wended it’s way through Alicante and Benidorm, with the streets packed full of onlookers, (no doubt due to locals being

Only 3 Nearest the Pins: Mike Davies, Ron Swift and Andy Billings Rodney Smith had the longest drive and Alan Brooker was the best guest. Due to the calendar this year our home game is in 3 weeks time - Tuesday 12th September at Vistabella first tee 08.15am. Please be there for 07.45 and have the correct money for the Green Fee. Anyone who would like to join our Society or would like a game when on holiday, give Ron a ring on 678 849 142 or email on sanmigron@gmail.com

informed properly beforehand) before reaching the climb up the Cumbre del Sol on the outskirts of Benitatxell to a climactic finish. Starting the day in first place overall in the Red Jersey (the Spanish equivalent of the Tour de France yellow jersey) was Great Britain’s Christopher Froome, aiming to become only the third person ever to win the Tour de France and La Vuelta in the same year. For the record, the other two were both Frenchmen, Jacques Anquetil and Bernauld Hinault (1963 & 1978) so we were maybe watching serious sporting history. Commencing on Saturday August 19th, this years La Vuelta finishes in Madrid on Sunday September 10th and is made up of 21 stages, the ninth of which was staged on Sunday, with Monday a rest day, and will cover a distance of just over 3,300 kilometres. This is the 72nd running of the event and it has become an iconic sporting occasion. It may not have the fervour of the Tour de France but it is still one of the greatest contests of human endeavour to be witnessed. And a few of us had that opportunity last weekend. Froome started the Stage 28 seconds ahead of Columbian Johan Esteban Chaves Rubio, who in turn was 13 seconds in front of Ireland’s Nicholas Roche, 41 seconds adrift of Froome. Further down the general classification list came an impressive who’s who of current cycling greats including Vincenzo Nibali, Tejay Van Garderen, Fabio Aru and last year’s winner Alberto Contador from Spain.

Chris Froome at the start The opening few kilometres were at an even pace and the few attempted breakaways came to nothing but after an hour of riding north, and as the pace quickened, a group of ten riders had established a breakaway of over two minutes. This gap remained at between two and three minutes for the next hundred kilometres but the first climb of the day, the alto de Puig Lorenca, saw the lead group begin to splinter with the peloton in full chase and reducing the deficit. Marc Soler made it to the top first followed by Tobias Ludvigsson with the main group still 1.45 seconds behind having swallowed up all the other breakaways. Both riders remained ahead downhill and contested the intermediate

sprint but by this stage the gap was down to just 30 seconds with the climb to the finish still to come. They were caught with 6km to go, Frenchman Romain Bardot made a couple of breaks but was also caught, and then with just 500 metres remaining Chris Froome powered to the front and stayed there to win by just 4 seconds from the man in second place overall in the GC standings, Esteban Chaves. So they head into the rest day with firm favourite Chris Froome looking in imperious form and having a comfortable cushion from his nearest competitor. However, with two weeks of hard cycling still to go, anything can happen. Graeme Clark

Tales from the top flight ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Damn those silly robotic footballers, only in it for the money don’t forget, for showing emotion at scoring a winning goal in 97th minute of a match. We don’t want to see them caring, do we? We don’t want to see them connecting with their fans that have been through thick and thin over the last however many decades. Hell, we don’t want an English player to be a matchwinner in the Premier League, do we? Actually, yeah. I think we do. Judging by the public outcry from 99.9% of people having seen Raheem Sterling get a second yellow card for running to the crowd at the Vitality Stadium having scored the winner against Bournemouth, I get the feeling that 99.9% of the public would like to see more of that please. Clearly there is a difference between goading the opposition fans having just scored and celebrating with your own, so maybe it is time to let the referee use a bit of common sense and remove the need for a mandatory yellow card for celebrating a goal in that way or, even though I’d prefer to see less of Cristiano Ronaldo’s stupidly toned torso, taking your shirt off. It’s funny how quickly that steward withdrew his claim of Sergio Aguero “assaulting” him though, right? If you think referees are people who were too rubbish to play the game, surely stewards are next on the list (yes I know, just above writers who make fun of them). Anyway, Charlie Daniels did score a

screamer to give Bournemouth hope but once again Manchester City found a way to win a game that looked like it was getting away from them and heading towards a draw. Pep will be happy to be sliding beneath the United shaped radar right now as he tries to work out exactly what is going to be his winning formula. City kicked off Saturday and Manchester United ended it, and Jose Mourinho already has his winning formula sussed. Last weekend Marouane Fellaini came on with the score 1-0 to United against Swansea. By the time Fellaini was done, United had won 4-0. Sure, others put the ball in the net but Fellaini was on the field, OK? At Old Trafford Fellaini came on with the score 1-0 to United against Leicester City and the final score was 2-0 with the big Belgian even getting the second goal. It’s easy once you realise that 32 minutes of Fellaini each weekend is the exact amount needed for success. Also, spare a thought for all the Fantasy Football players convinced last weekend that Romelu Lukaku is in fact the real deal and transferred him in. Lukaku missed a penalty, or rather Kasper Schmeichel made a very good save, leaving him more pointless than his time at Chelsea. That noise you can hear is Big Sam Allardyce chewing with a big smile on his face. The former Palace and England manager has taken great joy in warning Frank de Boer about the perils of trying to play “total voetbal” in Croydon, suggesting that if the Dutchman wants to be in a job come Christmas that he might want to consider “getting it up ‘em” a little

bit more. De Boer was never likely to listen to what was, annoyingly, rather sound advice and Crystal Palace fell at home once more, this time to Swansea. The race is now very much on, but it is not a relegation race. No, the race I am referring to is the race between Frank and West Ham’s Slaven Bilic, and the race is which one is likely to be vacating their office first. West Ham travelled up to Newcastle United needing to put in a performance slightly less hapless than a 4-0 defeat at Old Trafford and a comical 3-2 loss at Southampton. Newcastle, having their own little drama, must have been very much highlighted on the list of “must win matches” in the West Ham changing room, so to come away having lost 3-0 probably makes Slaven Bilic feel a little unsafe in his employment. Incredibly, at the other end of the table we still have Huddersfield who will have been disappointed to only draw 00 with Southampton, the single point meaning that they have now dropped behind Manchester United in the title race. Still, they are unbeaten which is pretty cool when you compare them to relegation certainties Brighton. They headed to inform Watford who were reduced to ten men pretty early, but even then Brighton failed to score. But, every cloud and all that. The point gained from the awful 0-0 draw was Brighton’s first ever Premier League point, and hopefully they will score their first ever Premier League goal at some point in September. Nobody wants to see that nice man Chris Hughton out of work, especially with Alan Pardew

very much in the public eye on Sky right now. That’s how the modern manager puts himself in the frame for a new managerial gig by the way. West Bromwich Albion will be feeling as frustrated as Huddersfield Town this morning. 1-1 against Stoke City might be better than Arsenal can manage, but it is not the kind of result you want when you are looking to remain top of the league. WBA even led 1-0, so nobody really expected Crouchy to get an equaliser. Hey, remember when we all thought Mark Hughes might be the first manager to get the boot? Crazy times. Champions Chelsea seem to have averted that crisis, haven’t they? It was all rather business like and without drama as they saw off Everton 2-0 at the Bridge. Wayne Rooney failed to follow up his international retirement with a goal to rub it into Gareth Southgate, but then Chelsea learned their lesson from an equally oversized Sam Vokes unmarked in the box on the opening day. In my Saturday morning column on talesfrom thetopflight.com I did suggest that Alvaro Morata would score as he wasn’t playing at Wembley and I was right. It happens occasionally. The weekend ended just like many footballing weekends do, with Arsenal delivering the kind of performance that makes you wonder whether the players have ever met before. At what point does Arsene Wenger go, “you know what, this isn’t fun anymore” because no old man should be in for that kind of punishment every week. The Leicester win papered over 1,000 cracks, the Stoke City started to strip the paper back and the first half

at Anfield exposed the fact there is a lot of dry rot in the Arsenal walls. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Alexis Sanchez both put in performances that suggested they might be expected for medicals elsewhere by the end of the week. Can you really blame Sanchez for openly wanting out? I mean, even if you are 2-0 surely you keep one man back at a corner, just in case that incredibly fast forward line gets the ball and runs like the wind? Come the end of the weekend you’d have put a lot of money on it being West Ham that are the most laughable club in London, but you’d have probably lost it. Mind you, it would have been easier for Arsenal if Mesut Ozil hadn’t been left at the team hotel before kick off. Sorry, you what? He played? Are you sure? Arsenal and Wenger have become a marriage of convenience. They know they don’t love each other anymore, they know the glory years are well behind them but neither can face up to the possibility of life without the other. And to be honest, the kids aren’t helping either. If Manchester City are going to make one last move for Sanchez, I’d suggest round about now might be the perfect moment. Maybe he was smirking at the fact that he might not have to put up with this much longer. Having said all that, just when it looked like nothing could go Arsenal’s way at all, Burnley scored a last minute equaliser against Tottenham! At Wembley! Welcome to the Premier League Chris Wood, pleased to have you here. That monkey on Tottenham’s back is fast becoming the size of a very overweight gorilla.

Your week in Sport ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

It was very decent of Floyd Mayweather to string it out ten rounds so that the crowd that had been foolish enough to pay money for that got something for their hard earned. Don’t get me wrong, in his own format Conor McGregor is a true champion and listening to him speak at anything other than a press conference is fascinating, but all bar one punch we can chalk this experiment up as a bit of a failure, can’t we? Mayweather gets to retire even richer and with an undefeated 50-0 professional record, and everyone can get back to what they do on a daily basis without feeling the need to pretend to be a boxing expert any longer. Sir Andy Murray is having exactly the 2017 this column predicted. Knights of the realm are not known for being good at tennis and Murray is living into this very quickly. However, his exit from the US Open is earlier than even I predicted as he won’t even be in the first round due to his niggling hip injury. It looks all set for Rafa Nadal and Roger Federer to continue to convince the tennis world that it is still 2006. Thank god this is one of the worst West Indies teams of all time, hey? Imagine how battered England would be getting in the second Test if they were actually any good! I, like many other cricket fans, found myself longing for the heady days of mid-August 2017 when England were the greatest cricket team in the world as Hope and Braithwaite put on lots and lots in the Windies first innings. Putting this series to one side, as England will surely wake up for the next match, the bigger worry

is that the Australians have cracked open a beer, taken a swig and started grinning to themselves at the thought of having a bowl at the England top order. It’s all very well dropping Joe Root back down to number four so that he doesn’t have to face the new ball too often, but it’s kind of important that numbers two and three do enough to mean that Root isn’t coming out to bat while people are still queuing to get in the ground. The answer is simple. Alex Hales at five. Ah, you are right. That doesn’t solve the lack of ability at two or three. Bring on the Ashes! Do you remember that time England got to a World Cup Final and then lost? Of course you do, it’s pretty much every time isn’t it? England’s Women rugby side led against New Zealand and lost in heartbreaking fashion. There is the ongoing debate that women should be paid equally in sport and personally I completely agree. The women are as capable of bottling it right at the end as the men and should be rewarded for doing so. Finally, it wasn’t a bad weekend for Lewis Hamilton. His pole position in Belgium equalled Michael Schumacher’s total, and he led from start to finish in his 200th race racking up his 58th victory. The win moved him to within seven points of his rival Vettel, who had just signed a three-year deal to remain at Ferrari. With people who know a lot more than I suggesting that the remaining races might suit Mercedes more than Ferrari, there is every chance Hamilton will end the season as world champion once again. Now, if we could only do that in team sport.
