October Fair a success I t was greeted with derision when the announcement came that the May Fair couldn’t take place in May after all. With a new slot in October, there were some who wondered if it might ever happen. They were proved wrong. From 11th to 15th October, the newly named Sevillanas Fair, delighted the people of Torrevieja and much further afield. The May fair was postponed until October this year due to difficulties with issuing contracts in sufficient time for the traditional Andalucian event to take place before the summer season. It may have
come five months later than normal, but in almost every other aspect the fair remained just as entertaining and vibrant as usual. As you would expect in May, the marquees were erected around the port area with each one offering a selection of food and impromptu performances of flamenco dancing. A traditional part of the fair is the procession of horses and carriages and Spanish costumes. These were out on the street both on the Saturday and Sunday and were enjoyed by many onlookers. Every evening a number of local dance groups entertained audiences with their
shows of flamenco and it seemed as though everyone turned out on Saturday night to enjoy these planned and impromptu spectacles. Altogether 29 different marquees had been erected next to the fair ground and many of these were full. There is also a religious side to the festivities, with a mass being held at 1pm in the Inmaculada church in the central square of the town. At 8.30pm on Saturday the crowd was entertained by Payas dance group with a selection of 12 flamenco and classical dances involving children from four years old to adults.
Tuesday, 17th - 23rd October 2017
Baile Dharma followed Payas on the specially erected stage. The final performance was from Carlos Vargas and Chayo Mohedano with the show ‘Viva la copla’. The performances were presented by Luis Terry and the Salt Queen, Marta Andréu. Although the event was a success, unfortunately some people would miss out this year as they were unable to rearrange their holidays to accommodate the fair’s new month. Even though it seemed to go well in October too, there are no plans to reschedule the fair on a permanent basis. It should be able to go ahead as usual in May next year. With now only six months to put it back in its traditional slot, there will be those wondering if the October billing isn’t here to stay. Suzanne O’Connell

A big thank you from the orphanage
Nerds unite The Sports Palace in Torrevieja played host this weekend to around 4,000 young people who were there to engage in their alternative interests. The free exhibition is opportunity to take part in a range of comic book, alternative film, archive video game and ‘warhammer’ type board game activities. There were speakers, competitions and workshops all arranged during the course of the day. The event was open to the public from 10am until 9pm. It’s an acquired taste but this fifth event is considered to be one of the best held in Spain, partly because it’s free.
12 years for murder of brother-in-law A man who killed his brother-in-law over money he owed has been given a sentence of 12 and a half years in prison. The murderer stabbed the victim eight times after a discussion about the debt from four years previously. The crime took place on 28th January in 2015 around 9.30pm when Nizamudin K, had an argument over the issue with his victim in calle Clemente Gonzálvez. The debt was the cause of them falling out four years before even though the victim was Nizamudin’s brother-in-law. Pyjamas, sportswear, pants and t-shirts, were just some of the items that those donating to the San José Obrero charity have enabled them to buy. Julie from Carmens Bar in El Chaparral and her customers have been raising money to fund the purchase of some much-needed items for the 70 children who live in the orphanage. The money has been raised through donations and also through the weekly raffle with the winning prize of a free
Sunday roast. Now, added to this fundraising activity, the bar is selling charity calendars which have been produced by Andy Ormiston with the support of a number of local businesses. Orihuela anniversary goes to Madrid The Mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, has announced that the image of Orihuela poet Miguel Hernández is now displayed on the metro system of Madrid, specifically on the line number 10 and on the stop that has been designated to have the name of the poet bestowed upon it. This action, managed by the City of Orihuela in conjunction with Metro de Madrid, consists of "the placing of the Year Miguel Hernández plaques in one of the places with the largest public influx in the capital of Spain, the Madrid metro, which every day see millions of people pass
through it. The Mayor added that this is “a great opportunity to make known our poet and our city.” The marketing campaign which began last week will remain until 23rd October. The action involves 150 plaques distributed in different stations, as well as in the cities own station Miguel Hernández in Orihuela. Bascuñana explained that this is the first initiative carried out in Metro de Madrid, and “we are planning to be able to do some more soon,” he added. Mireille Toddington

abdomen and lower back. As compensation for his crime, Nizamudin had offered to give the parents of the dead man the business that he ran in Torrevieja. An appeal was made to have the sentence reduced but this was dismissed as it was not considered that the beer he had drunk previously to the incident had significantly altered his mental capacity.
Actor visits Torrevieja The actor Javier Gutiérrez Álvarez is currently starring in a short film set in Torrevieja about two people who meet here. Javier has previously won a Goya and Concha de Plata for his performance in ‘’La isla minima’ and is well-known for other roles. The short story that unfolds in Torrevieja has the backing of the Instituto Municipal de Cultura. Some of the film has been shot in the Eras de la Sal but there are also other familiar settings for some of the scenes including the playa del Cura, the paseos, the casino and the coves. Javier is from Asturias originally but he spent many years in Torrevieja and knows the town well. ‘I have spent summers here,’ said the actor and it’s wonderful in October. I hope to retire here too. Making a short film is more work. I’m not bothered which media it is, theatre, film or television, I’m interested in the characters and the story itself.’ The director of the film, Belén Verdugo explained that it was Carlos Mores, who currently lives in Torrevieja, who had originally proposed the project. ‘I have been spending my summers in Torrevieja for more than 15 years,’ she explained. ‘What we want to depict in the story is the happiness of two people who meet here.’ The film’s release date has not been announced yet.
Are you ready for a White Christmas? The cast of Studio32 are doing their best to make sure they are. They will be performing the winter show on Wednesday November 29th to Saturday December 2nd at the Cardenal Belluga Theatre in San Fulgencio. The show is a stage adaptation of Irving Berlin’s ‘White Christmas’ and includes lots of wellknown songs. One of the main characters is a Studio32 favourite. Alice Wakeford plays Susan who joins her uncle after the second world war at his inn in Vermont. Alice has been with Studio32 for four and a half years. In their last production of Mack & Mabel she played Lottie and she is a trained dancer as well as a singer and an actress. Her uncle in the show, General Waverley, is played by Don Wilkinson Continued on page 6
On Sunday, 15th October it was the ‘Marcha por la vida’ or walk for life that took place on Torrevieja’s sea front. Although it is an annual event, this year it seemed to attract more people than ever; keen to demonstrate their solidarity when it comes to the fight against cancer. The crowd began to gather at 11am with people meeting around the Hombre del Mar as well as further up the paseo. There were plenty of pink t-shirts on display with people having already reserved theirs in advance. Last year they actually ran out on the day. It was very much a family occasion with mums, dads and children and pink was everywhere.
part on the day. This swell in numbers means that there could have been as many as 600 people there. The numbers are growing every year. The walkers were a little late in setting off due to the arrival of so many at the last minute. The anticipated start time of 11.30am was delayed for perhaps 20 minutes whilst the final participants were registered. The police were there to escort those taking part on the march to Las Columnas and back. Jenny Dodd was one of those taking part; ‘There were lots of puzzled looking northern Europeans wondering what was going on,’ she says. ‘But also quite a few
People had come up with lots of ideas for spreading the word, including pink ribbons in children’s hair and dogs sporting bink bows too. Those people who had registered were given a bottle of water and a pink scarf which could also be seen on a few pets who accompanied the walkers. It wasn’t just those who had already registered who turned up. Many people arrived and bought their t-shirt to take

It was very hot, especially in the t-shirt and it was just as well that a breeze got up as we set off.’ The money raised from the day will go towards the AECC (La Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer) and following the turnout, the event is expected to have raised a significant amount. Paddle surf flourishes in Torrevieja La Mata beach played host to a paddle surf championship on October 9th. There were hundreds of participants in the eleventh leg of this major competition which puts Torrevieja up there as a world paddle surf centre. The competition was organised by Club Deportivo Torrevieja Surf in collaboration with the town hall. The competition had attracted participants of all ages from eight years old to the most elite professionals of the sport. The waves on the day didn’t prevent everyone from enjoying this sport which every year is picking up more and more fans. ‘What we’re noticing each year,’ explained Luis César Castejón, president of the Torrevieja surf club, ‘Is an improved technical standard particularly in those competing from the Mediterranean.’ This is the fifth consecutive year that
the competition has taken place here and is a very popular venue for this new sport that is a mixture of surfing and rowing. The race takes place over different distances depending on the category, ages and expertise of those taking part. Competitors must stand on the surf board and must surf over some of the waves whilst also propelling themselves by rowing. There are 14 stages in the competition which began in Alicante on 9th April. Its popularity has grown significantly over the years. In 2013 there were 32 competitors in comparison to 100 who attended on the 9th . Some of those taking part included international competitors from Hawaii and California. Suzanne O’Connell

Expats in Police Brexit limbo attacked Theresa May says she ‘does not know’ what will happen to British expats in Spain if there’s no Brexit deal. The British Prime Minister admitted that the 1.2 million Brits in the EU would be left in limbo after a Brexit no-deal. The PM said the government ‘does not know what would happen’ to expats if the UK crashes out of the bloc without an overall agreement. May was also unable
to confirm what would happen to EU citizens in the UK, with Brits abroad facing a similarly uncertain future. “We just do not know what would happen to them,” May told LBC. “The EU members states would have to consider what their approach would be to the UK citizens. This is one of the reasons we want to get a deal.” She added: “If there is no deal then we have to be prepared for it.” There are growing fears that a Brexit no-deal is on the cards, with the EU’s chief negotiator Michel Barnier warning negotiations are ‘not a game’. European leaders are due to meet on 19th October to decide whether ‘sufficient progress’ has been made to move on to the Brexit trade talks.
A man has been charged in court after attacking two Guardia Civil officers in Callosa. The Prosecutor for the Provincial Court of Alicante is asking for 10 years in prison for the 29 year old Moroccan man who allegedly attacked two Guardia Civil officers in Callosa de Segura. According to the Prosecutor’s written accusation, in April 2016 two officers stopped the accused for identification and he repeatedly hit one of them in the head. The incident took place before dawn on Calle Adolfo Cardona Pascual. The young man became violent and “pulled the case of a rear view mirror off a parked car and started hitting one of the officers in the head with it”. The accused then took his police issue pistol from him and pointed it at him but in the end the officer was able to stop him from loading it. The other officer who helped his colleague received “hard punches to the forearms” from the accused. As a result of the attack the first Guardia Civil was on sick leave for 43 days while his colleague suffered injuries that forced him to wear a neck brace and attend rehabilitation. As well as the 10 years in prison, the Prosecutor has asked for the accused to pay compensation of €2,130 to the first officer and €1,560 to the second, as well as to pay the cost of the officer’s trousers that were ripped - €32.67 – and the rear view mirror he pulled off €51.21.

Better training for chefs The University of Alicante has announced a new degree course in gastronomy. The course is aimed at improving understanding of Mediterranean cooking and those heading it will collaborate with local cities, such as Torrevieja. ‘We are hoping to promote some of our local products as part of the course,’ explained the mayor, José Manuel Dolón. There are also plans to hold a foody conference in Torrevieja which will focus on the theme of salt and include the cooking of seafood, the history of salt and innovative ways in which it can be used. Torrevieja is keen to increase the training available to local chefs and people working in the food industry in the town Suzanne O’Connell
No bathing here! The Valencian government has reaffirmed its prohibition of bathing in the salt lake in Torrevieja. People might not be aware that they are in fact not allowed to enter the salty water to bathe by law. The salt lake is not very deep, so swimming is not a possibility but over the course of the year many take the opportunity to cover themselves in the mud beneath the lake which is considered to be good for the skin. They then wash the mud off lying down in the salty water. However, the regional council is aware of the
there could put people at risk. However, fans of the salt lake will not be easily put off by the threats of fines. The area is easy to access for those living around the Torretas and La Siesta and is popular as a destination, not only for the healing qualities of the mud and water but also for the spectacular sunsets. On Wednesday, 4th October representatives from the Alicante police and Grupo Salins, the town hall and park personnel went to the area in order to look at what could be done to satisfy the public’s interest
popularity of this activity and are taking measures to enable people to still treat themselves with what’s considered to be the therapeutic mud. An area is to be sectioned off where people can, legally, continue to apply the mud and wash themselves afterwards without risking a fine from the authorities. If you are caught bathing there you could, in theory, be fined up to €6,000. It is maintained that bathing is not allowed in the salt lake due to the risk of accident from the nearby salt works. It’s also private land belonging to el Grupo Salins and is classed as an industrial area too. Having been a popular bathing area for years and with most people not venturing far, it’s hard to see how bathing
in the area whilst also ensuring its security. On their visit there were already several people bathing belonging to different nationalities. Many years ago there was an expensive attempt to construct a spa adjacent to the lake. It was never completed and leaves the neighbours of Torreta III with an eyesore that more resembles a giant slug than an attractive spa area. What remains of the building is now a fire risk and health hazard of its own. Local people might feel aggrieved that having lived with such a monstrosity for decades it’s not the eyesore that will be removed but their right to enjoy the lake instead. Suzanne O’Connell

Fish tourism promoted Yes, you’ve read it correctly. Councillor Fanny Serrano, councillor for tourism, has been explaining about the plans to encourage people to Torrevieja who have an interest in fishing. A day had been set aside, October 17th, when different organisations linked to the fishing industry in Torrevieja came together to find out more about the potential. The day was organised by Valencian Tourism in collaboration with some other organisations and the town hall. It’s another example of how Torrevieja is trying to diversify and bring in tourists other than just those seeking sun and sand. The day was planned to attract fisherman’s associations, tourist organisations, travel agencies, tourist guides and those studying tourism, to keep them informed of what’s available in the town that others might be interested in. The day began at 9.30am and participants went on board the boat Delfín Verde in order to see a fishing boat at work and how it drops its catch at the fish market. The day included a trip to the Eras de la Sal and for lunch a ‘caldero’ was served, a favourite local dish which is a little like a fish stew. In the afternoon participants took part in further discussions about using the fishing industry in Torrevieja as a tourist attraction. Preserving the marine environment is an important aspect of this with information available about preserving squid and octopus populations. It might sound an unusual combination of activities but for those interested in Torrevieja and looking for something different it could be an attraction. Suzanne O’Connell

Spanish work contracts worst in EU Fewer than one in 10 temporary workers in Spain are ever offered permanent contracts. The shocking figure makes Spain the worst out of 28 EU countries analysed in a study by Eurostat. The UK sees 55.3 percent of its temporary workers find full-time work, the second highest conversion rate after Latvia on 56.8 percent. It is followed by Romania and Austria on 51.9 percent and 47.6 percent respectively. The figures also reveal that more than 25 percent of Spain’s workers are on temporary contracts. And getting out of the trap of temporary work is becoming increasingly difficult. A year before the crisis began, in 2006, the average duration of temporary contracts was 79.1 days. Last year it dropped to 50.6, growing slightly in the first eight months of this year to 51.1 days. Salaries for temporary employees continue to be far lower than those of permanent workers. In 2015 the average yearly salary of a permanent employee was €24,562, compared to the average temporary worker’s €16,442. This equates to a 33.1 percent difference, making temporary contracts far more attractive to employers.

Problems plague Torreta III The Torreta III neighbourhood association has asked the town hall to work with them to help address the problem of the illegal occupation of homes in the area. They calculate that there are 80 properties in the urbanisation that are occupied by people without the permission of their owners. They acknowledge that this isn’t a new problem but one that has been getting gradually worse over the years. The association has registered their petition with the town hall for the fifth time requesting a meeting with the mayor, José Manuel Dolón, to look at how the problem can be tackled. Owners of other properties in the area are asking
The problem isn’t confined to Torreta III. There are also illegal occupations in Torreta II. The problem is a complex one with many of the owners having died and other properties perhaps being taken over by banks due to debt and mortgage arrears. In these cases those who officially own the property have no interest in its state or the difficulties it is causing for those who live around it. In order to start judicial intervention a petition must be made by the owner. This is difficult where there is apparently no traceable owner available. The community wants the town hall to help identify who the owners are so that they can be notified of the
for procedures to be put in place to enable illegal squatters and people who have outstayed their welcome to move on. The properties, in many cases, already carry illegal extensions and building work and in some cases are also used as little businesses perhaps piggy backing on someone else’s electricity and lighting. The urbanisation was built between the end of the 70s and the beginning of the 80s and as such is one of the oldest in Torrevieja. Altogether there are 3,200 houses most of which are semi-detached and were targeted at the Spanish and Central European market. An apartment in Torrevieja was even one of the prizes on the Spanish show ‘1,2,3’
situation and encouraged to denounce those living their illegally. There are still disputes about who is ultimately responsible for the urbanisation. The town hall claims that the people living there must be responsible for its internal repairs and improvements, whilst the residents claim that the council have responsibility for providing at least a minimum of services and upkeep. What is clear is that the situation needs addressing and some kind of compromise achieved in order that living conditions on the estate improve for those paying their taxes. Suzanne O’Connell

Where to invest your pension in retirement INVESTING YOUR PENSION IN RETIREMENT MEANS BALANCING INCOME WITH GROWTH PENSION SAVINGS NOW HAVE TO LAST TWO DECADES, SO POTS NEED TO WORK HARDER PICK THE RIGHT INVESTMENTS NOW OR YOU RUN THE RISK OF RUNNING OUT OF CASH
W
ith the average retirement now set to last at least two decades, savers need to make sure their pension pots work harder than ever. Keeping your cash invested through retirement means you can take an income while your money continues to grow. But you need to make sure you pick the right investments or you could find yourself running out of cash. Research by insurance group SunLife found more than a third of retirees are worried their money will dry up before they die and some 28% said money was their biggest concern for the future. Why people are staying invested in retirement It’s no wonder then that with the advent of the pension freedoms, savers are increasingly opting for drawdown as a means to eke out savings over the long term. Drawdown is an arrangement whereby your pension savings stay invested, but you can withdraw money from your pot as and when you need. A major attraction of drawdown is the money that remains invested has the potential to keep growing — so, with careful planning, it can replenish itself at such a rate as to replace the amount you withdraw each year. What kind of investment should you look for? But where should you invest your money to make sure it can see you through retirement? If you would like to discuss your options, then call us on 965 704 338 for a free no‐ obligation chat with an adviser. Alternatively, email: Contact@SeagateWealth.es

There are many varieties of bush beans to choose from. They can be green, yellow, or purple and come in all kinds of shapes and sizes so you can add a variety of textures and colour to your dinner plate
Bush beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) are easy to plant and they grow well even in poor soil, and have ready-to-eat pods in only seven or eight weeks. And by staggering planting times by a few weeks you can have a continuous bean production all summer/autumn long. Below you will find some tips that are guaranteed to bring you the best, tastiest, and most productive bush bean crop ever: 1. Wait for warm weather Beans like warm soil, so for best germination when sowing your seeds, wait until the soil temperatures are warmer than 16° C (60° F). If you plant the seeds in cold soil, the beans will germinate very slowly leaving them vulnerable to rot and soil-borne diseases. 2. Prepare bean seeds for planting Soak them: For extra fast germination, soak the seeds in water for 30 minutes before planting, or put the seeds between two damp paper towels the night before planting. By the next day, the seeds will be swollen and ready to germinate. Inoculate them: Beans are like peas and other “nitrogen-fixing” legumes in that beans can pull nitrogen right out of the air because soildwelling bacteria forms nodules on their roots. But this can happen only if the soil naturally has this helpful bacteria. If the soil has no such bacteria, your beans will not do as well. 3. Water properly Bush beans like a regular supply of water. That said however, beans do NOT like wet, or poorly drained soil. In order to make sure the soil drains well, and your beans do not rot, add plenty of organic matter such as compost before planting. Give the beans regular water, and allow the plants to dry out a bit in between waterings. The only time you want the soil to be constantly damp is right after you have sown the seeds. Watering the seeds: When sowing in the spring, sow the seeds 1 inch (2.5 cm) deep; in the hot weather of summer, sow the seeds 2 inches (5 cm) deep. Then soak the seed bed thoroughly with water, and try not to
water again until the beans sprout so that the soil does not become soggy or waterlogged. If your soil tends to dry out quickly, or to form a crust, cover the seed bed with a very thin layer of mulch or compost after you plant to keep the soil surface moist and soft. This helps the bean's growing tip from breaking off as it pushes though the soil. If your soil dries out even with the mulch, do water again. Always keep sown seed beds damp. If they dry out, the seeds will die. 4. Plant bush beans very close together Bush beans do not mind being crowded and will still produce a good crop. The best reason for planting them fairly close together is you want the leaves of the plants to grow into a shade canopy that will cool the soil and stop weeds from growing. Plant bean seeds in “blocks” or rows 2 to 3 inches (5 to 7.5 cm) apart and do not thin when they come up. 5. Make sure to rotate Try not to grow beans in the same garden bed two years in a row because they are susceptible to several soil-borne diseases. Rotating your crops will help prevent a build up of these diseases at each location. 6. Keep bush beans weeded Snap beans have very shallow roots that cannot compete with weeds for water and nutrients, so try and keep your beans well weeded. Remember however, that bean roots grow very close to the soil surface, so be careful when weeding that you do not pull the bean plants out along with the weeds if you have allowed the weeds to get too large. 7. Bush beans like mulch Especially here where summers are hot and dry, mulch your beans to help keep the moisture in the soil. 8. Bush beans do not like super high heat Beans will stop producing about a week after any hot spell that is over 32° C (90° F). To avoid this, either cover your bush beans with shade cloth structures to help them weather through or plant early in the spring, or towards the end of summer to miss most of the high heat days. 9. Stagger your planting Because bush beans tend to produce their beans all at once, harvest will only last about 2 weeks. By staggering your planting, it will help keep a steady supply of beans throughout the summer. 10. Keep bush beans picked Regular harvesting is the number one way to guarantee a prolonged bean harvest. You should pick your beans at least every other day, and you should pick your beans before their pods swell and fill up with seeds. By following the above tips you will have even more success with your beans and that simply means more for you to eat and enjoy! Marc Vijverberg

WELCOME TO LJUBLJANA with Vivalia Travel Ljubljana is the capital and largest city of Slovenia. Located in the middle of a trade route between the northern Adriatic Sea and the Danube region Ljubljana is the capital and largest city of Slovenia. Located in the middle of a trade route between the northern Adriatic Sea and the Danube region, it has been a historical capital of the Carniola, a Sloveneinhabited part of AustriaHungary and is now the cultural, educational, economic, political and administrative center of Slovenia, independent since 1991. Its central geographic location within Slovenia, transport connections, concentration of industry, scientific and research institutions and cultural tradition are contributing factors to its leading position. Ljubljana has no world-famous attractions, which is just great: there's no need to hop from one place to another, taking photos and crossing the items on your checklist. You have all the time to stroll around and enjoy the city itself. It is a charming city full of artists, museums, and galleries. With a population of 300,000, it is one of the smallest capital cities in Europe. THINGS TO SEE AND DO The easiest and most pleasant way to reach all spots described below is by foot, except for the Zoo and the Architecture Museum. Triple Bridge (Tromostovje). It consists of three separate picturesque bridges located next to one another. The neighboring Prešeren square with the statue of Slovenian greatest poet France Prešeren is the central location of downtown Ljubljana and a common meeting point. Old Town. Squeezed between the castle hill and Ljubljanica river is the old town with two squares, Mestni trg (City square) with the Robba fountain and the city hall behind it,
and, further on, Gornji trg (Upper square). Ljubljana Castle. The tower has magnificent views all over the city. You can also see the Sava River and Kamnik Alps in the distance. Tivoli Park. The main city park. You can sit down on a park bench and enjoy the sun. About Opera and Theatre, shows are performed regularly throughout the year. The opera house is located just behind the Slovene Parliament. There are several theatres scattered all over the city centre.
EAT AND DRINK Downtown Ljubljana is full of trendy cafes (outdoor seating in the summer!) and high-quality restaurants. You can find local Slovenian food, and restaurants with ethnic food from many places around the world. Pizza in Ljubljana is of very good quality. Try a burger Slovene style with a horse burger. You can find budget, midrange and splurge restaurants. On the other hand, most of Ljubljana’s bars tend to cluster on the streets running parallel to the river, radiating from Prešernovtrg, which is the main square in Ljubljana. The more interesting bars tend to be on the backstreets, rather than directly facing the river. Part of the joy of this city is stumbling across these places, but these are few to start you off. Also, Ljubljana has several good nightclubs (discotheques). The clubs hold special events, they will play a certain syle of music on certain nights, etc. Some will also impose a strict dress code and age limits.

Dilemma
He was seeing her all along
My life-long best friend stole my sister’s husband 2 years ago, and effectively ruined her life. Now my friend and my ex-brother-in-law are marrying. My sister doesn’t know I kept in touch with my friend, and now my friend wants me to attend her wedding. I feel bad enough about not severing links with my friend, let alone attending the wedding. If I go, my sister will find out. My family don’t know I still see my friend.
My boyfriend of two years had been cooling off for several weeks, but wouldn’t give me a reason why. Again and again I asked him if there was someone else, but he said no, just that he needed some space. Then he packed up and moved out. It took just three days for him to take up with someone else. I know the girl - she works with him, and I spotted them both together when I was driving passed a bar one night. Do you think he was seeing her before?
It depends how much you value your relationship with your sister, and I think this might be one of those situations where blood is thicker than water. If I were your sister and found out that you’d kept in touch with the woman who stole her husband, I would probably be very hurt and angry. It’s a dilemma I agree but there are definitely rights and wrongs here, and siding with someone who ruined your sister’s life would be wrong.
I would say your boyfriend has possibly been less than honest with you, and that this other girl was always on the scene in some way. Why he couldn’t tell you the reason for his cooling off and finally leaving, is unfair. You wanted a reason and he wasn’t brave enough to tell you he’d met someone else. I suppose you could confront him - it might make you feel better. Tell him you wished he’d been honest. You deserved that at least.

Tragic road crash Five people have been killed in a multiple pile-up on the A-7 motorway near Murcia and another 10 injured. Nine cars, two lorries and two vans collided, blocking both lanes in a northbound direction in Sangonera la Seca, to the south of Murcia city and close to the La Paz service station late on last Monday night.
Of those who died, four were in the same car – a man and three women, two of the women believed to be teenagers – and the fifth was travelling in another of the cars.
The crash was caused by a lorry running into the other vehicles for reasons which have not yet been clarified. Although witnesses said the trailer of the articulated lorry ran over several cars which were stopped in a hold-up next to La Paz camping site. It is believed that the articulated lorry failed to break and ran into the parked vehicles, some
were forced into the air and landed off the motorway. After smashing eight cars and the two vans, the trailer swung around causing more fatalities.
A 17-year-old woman with head injuries and a man and woman aged 36 with serious cuts and bruises were taken to Murcia's Virgen de la Arrixaca Hospital. Three men, one aged 26 and two aged 17 were taken to the Morales Meseguer Hospital with multiple wounds. Another four suffered minor injuries, one of whom was taken to the Reina Sofía Hospital and the others, three men aged 29, 31 and 64, were treated at the scene. Five military emergency response vans, 10 fire fighters, five ambulances, the Local Police, Guardia Civil and the region's director-general of citizen safety and emergencies José Ramón Carrasco were among those called out to the scene. A tailback of over 20 kilometres was reported for several hours and drivers were warned to leave the motorway south of the accident site. The long tailback resulted in other collisions closer to the city. The lorry driver who caused the crash, Hipólito A.P., 38, from Totana, was uninjured but in shock. Getting out of his vehicle and sitting down on the crash barrier, he broke down in tears and called his father, whom he used to work with driving forklift trucks. Hipólito said he was 'in a state' and 'did not remember anything' about how the crash happened. He is said to have tested positive for cocaine, a revelation which has left his family distraught. Hipólito's uncle, Silvestre, says his
nephew had been a professional driver all his working life and had never had an accident before, not even a minor bump. He spent the night in a police cell but was released with charges and his driving licence taken off him, meaning he can no longer work.
Family lost The four people in the same car who died were a family from Elche travelling home after a few days break in Almería. They have been identified as 53-year-old José Vicente Gaspar Maciá, who was wellknown in his home city as he trained the juniors and B-teams for Elche FC; his sister-in-law Josefa Belmonte, 48; José Vicente's 14-year-old daughter Elena Maciá, and Josefa's daughter Laura Fabra, 16. Elena's mother, José Vicente's wife and Josefa's sister was also in the car, but survived with injuries. Their car, along with that of the fifth person who died – a Murcia man who has not been identified – ended up right underneath the lorry. The injured helped each other – such as 55-year-old Ginés Jerez, a fisherman, who works on a boat in Mazarrón. He was driving to work with a companion from Altea when they saw the accident. The van in which they were travelling was also hit, but both were only slightly hurt so they went to help the other wounded, among them the occupants of the SUV which had been catapulted off the motorway.

Huge drugs haul thanks to UK tip off A huge £200 million haul of cocaine has been seized by the Spanish authorities after UK tip off. One of the world’s biggest hauls of cocaine, the consignment was intercepted and taken ashore in Cadiz. The £200 million seizure was found on a tug-boat sailing between Madeira and the Azores. The mammoth 3.7 tonne haul, intercepted by Spain’s coast guard, came about after a tip off from the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA). The boat, which flew a Comoros islands flag, was believed to be on route to Europe, probably Spain, from Colombia. Its seven-strong crew – six men from Turkey and one from Azerbaijan – were arrested after an extensive search found 165 individual packages of cocaine, hidden beneath the galley floor. Each package contained around 23 kilos of powder. Mark Blackwell from the NCA, said: “Seizing this quantity of cocaine represents a major disruption to international crime groups, depriving them of revenue running into the hundreds of millions of pounds.” “We’re working with colleagues in Europe and around the world to disrupt organised criminals in any way we can, and to protect European borders from attempts to smuggle illegal commodities through them,” he added

Earthquakes in Tenerife An earthquake reaching 4 on the Richter scale shook the southwest of Tenerife in the early hours of last Tuesday morning, but no
damage was caused as it was located a very long way beneath the surface. Emergency services received calls from residents in Adeje, Arona and San Miguel, and the National Geographical Institute (IGN) says the tremor at exactly 06.38 was 25 kilometres underground. The devastating May 2011 Lorca (Murcia) earthquake – the worst in recent history, which led to numerous deaths and thousands of homes collapsing – which, at 5.6 on the Richter scale, would normally have caused some building damage but not be a major disaster, was only a kilometre underground, which meant its intensity was huge. Tenerife's tremor 25 kilometres below the surface meant it reached level III on the intensity scale which, according to the IGN, is only felt by fewer than 1 percent of the population, and purely those resting or in positions 'especially susceptible
to movement' inside buildings, such as up a ladder. The initial quake was followed exactly 20 minutes later with an aftershock of 1.5 on the Richter scale – normally not felt by anyone – and 18 kilometres below ground. Both these quakes have come during a series of tremors that have been recorded recently, and are ongoing, in Cumbre Vieja on the island of La Palma – a phenomenon being closely monitored by the Canarian Institute of Volcanology. These earthquakes now bring the total to 50 tremors felt in Las Palma putting emergency services on high alert. To add to the islands woes, there are now tsunami fears as a huge active volcano is thought to be behind the series of quakes. The largest quake had a magnitude of 2.7 in the area of the Natural Park Cumbre Vieja around 1pm, 28 km below the ground. The second largest, of 2.6, took place at 1.23pm the day after in the same area, while the third quake took place at midnight last Monday, reaching a magnitude of 2.1, according to the Volcanological Institute of the Canary Islands (Involcan). The earthquakes from the huge Cumbre Vieja volcano have led volcano experts to be pulled in to
examine the unusual seismic activity. There have now been 50 tremors in three days after at least ten were recorded overnight last night. One of them reported a magnitude of 2.1 just after midnight. A 2.8-magnitude earthquake was also recorded in the northwest of the Canary Island of Gran Canaria. Volcano experts from the Volcanological Institute of the Canary Islands (Involcan) are now intensifying surveillance on the islands after being shocked by the sudden and sharp rise in activity. María José Blanco, director of the National Geographic Institute in the Canary Islands, said the island has ‘never recorded a similar swarm’. The earthquakes have not been felt by residents because they are occurring very deep below the ground. Devastation Scientists have warned if the huge volcano erupts, it will likely collapse into the sea – sparking a mile-high tidal wave that would engulf Spain, Britain and the east coast of the US. Experts have predicted the monster tsunami would strike Spain’s south and west coasts as well as Portugal, plunging the lives of thousands in danger. It could then hit north Africa, before moving thousands of miles across the Atlantic and hitting the Caribbean and the east coast of the US.

When you talk about property, everyone has an opinion; sometimes it’s a valid and realistic point of view, but there are times when an opinion can be very wrong. As a professional Real Estate Agent, it’s our job to guide both buyers and sellers in achieving their goal; when a buyer is looking for a specific investment, we select what could fit their search criteria. When a seller is searching for the ideal buyer, we actively look for the right person that could “fit the bill” perfectly. However, there are times when buyers’ emotions can distort an opportunity. Everyone has valid reasons for moving home. For some, it might be time to relocate themselves and their family to embark on a new and better life. For others, it might be a need for extra rooms, or even the opposite, and downsizing when the family have flown the nest, is their choice. But then, there are some circumstances when people are forced to sell their home, due to financial or health reasons, and that’s when it’s our task to be compassionate, and guide them the best and quickest way in achieving a sale. In my job, it can pull at your heartstrings, especially when life in general is not going according to plan for some selected sellers. But, I always tell them to try not to stress about life’s hurdles, and attempt to “go with the flow.” Sometimes, due to one man’s misfortune, another man can make a great
investment; especially when we are able to match the two of them together, of which can be extremely rewarding. But one thing will always remain; unless you have been specifically informed of the reason the home is for sale, never assume you know why! Believe me, my job can be unbelievably stressful when I sit and hear some very sad reasons for needing to sell a property quickly, and pricing it well below market value is the sellers’ only option of a quick exit. An hour of crying with the homeowner makes you really appreciate all of the positives you have in your life, even if you don’t think they’re much. Then the day comes when that property sells and the homeowner holds your hand and thanks you with tears in his eyes, for helping to release him of one of the obstacles in his life, in order to focus on what’s more important for his immediate future, is true job satisfaction. There are happy moments too, when we do experience some wonderful reasons why people decide to sell, such as starting on a new adventure like marriage, where maintaining two houses isn’t practical anymore, and letting go of one property is a joyful reason for selling. So you see, there are always genuine reasons for selling property, just spare a thought for those who need to sell a little quicker than others. Who knows, even if you’re not looking to buy, maybe you know someone that is! You’ll never really know whom you could be helping. For more information and guidance on buying and selling, please contact us and we will send you our FREE e-book or log on to: www.homes4u.es/newkindle-e-book to request the link. Think property? Think us, because life’s complicated enough! See our advert in the centre pages of this newspaper. www.homes4u.es

More businesses desert Catalunya Courier firm MRW and insurance company Catalana Occidente have decided to move their head offices out of Catalunya, fearing the unilateral declaration of independence since made by it regional government. MRW, which used to handle Amazon deliveries for customers in Spain ordering from the UK and has been trading for
40 years, will set up in Valencia, whilst Catalana Occidente plans to shift to Madrid’s main business boulevard, the Paseo de la Castellana. Once again, both companies say employees will not have to relocate, but that the head offices in Catalunya will now become branches as the firms will be domiciled in other regions.
Beer manufacturer San Miguel, part of the Mahou chain, plans to move to Málaga from Barcelona, whilst the huge estate agency chain Colonial, along with transport infrastructure engineers Abertis and DVD Dental, are heading for Madrid. CaixaBank has already shifted to Valencia, Banco Sabadell to Alicante, Gas Natural Fenosa, Dogi, Service Point, SegurCaixa Adeslas Insurance, Grupo LectaTorraspapel, Trea Asset Management, CaixaBank Asset Management, VidaCaixa and Naturhouse to Madrid, and the La Caixa Foundation and Criteria CaixaHolding have gone to Palma de Mallorca. Manufacturers of Spain’s most widelyconsumed hot chocolate, Cola Cao, and literature publishing group Planeta say they will move out of Catalunya if its president, Carles Puigdemont, declares independence, whilst Spain’s largest makers of cava, Freixenet and Cordoniu, are considering moving away from the region they have been based in
since they were founded and with which their names have always been synonymous. Construction giant Copasa will shift out of Barcelona and set up in the northwestern cathedral city of Santiago de Compostela (Galicia), although investment bank GVC Gaesco claims its own move to Madrid was decided in September. Many of these firms are, or have recently been, members of the élite Ibex 35 group – the top 35 Spanish companies on the stock exchange. In total, over 30 companies have announced plans to shift out of Catalunya, all of which are corporate giants. They will not necessarily be physically
moving, but changing their domicile from Catalunya to other parts of Spain means their taxation régime will see more cash flowing into their new regions and, if Catalunya were to become an independent country, it would not benefit from multi-millions in tax which would instead be paid to the Spanish State, where their companies were registered. Savers and investors have reportedly been queuing up at banks in Catalunya to withdraw their funds and place them in branches of the same banks outside the region. This has particularly been seen in the west and south of Catalunya, where a short trip over the border takes them into Aragón and Valencia respectively.

In the same press release, Ryanair stated that its customers will be informed of the situation of their flights by email or phone. It also adds that “unfortunately, further flight delays and cancellations are likely and customers are asked to please monitor this notice which will be updated throughout the day.” Of the 212 cancelled flights, at least 106 have their origin or destination at a Spanish airport. The most affected is Alicante, with 24 cancellations, followed by Barcelona El Prat and Palma, with 16. Madrid’s Barajas airport sees 12 cancellations, with 10 in Málaga and Murcia, and six in Ibiza, Valencia and Reus. For the third time in less than a month, the Irish airline has had to “sincerely apologise” for the inconvenience caused to its passengers, although in this case it states that the problem is “entirely outside of our control.”

Flights cancelled due to French air traffic control strike More strike action by French air traffic control has brought added chaos for holidaymakers hot on the heels of the Ryanair and Monarch cancellations and around half of the cancellations will affect Spanish airports, with Alicante the worst affected. Ryanair cancelled a total of 212 flights scheduled for last Tuesday – 10th October - due to an air traffic controllers’ strike in France. Of the flights, half either leave or arrive at a Spanish airport. The airline, which has already announced thousands of cancellations until March of next year due to poor planning of its pilot vacations, says that the strike could see additional cancellations or delays. “We regret to advise customers that due to an air traffic control strike in France, we have been forced to cancel the flights listed below,” the company announced via its website, followed by the full list of the 212 cancelled flights.

Puigdemont declares independence for Catalonia then suspends it There was huge expectation surrounding a session of the Catalan parliament that was scheduled for last Tuesday at 6pm, when regional premier Carles Puigdemont was expected to make a statement to “explain the political situation.” In the event, the leader of the Junts pel Si (Together for Yes) did not speak until 7pm, due to a disagreement over the content of his speech with his partners in the far-left CUP party. During his address, of nearly an hour, Puigdemont declared independence unilaterally based on a ballot that lacked all basic democratic guarantees, and which yielded 90 per cent of Yes votes as the vast majority of Remainers stayed home, for a turnout of less than half of the voter pool. But he immediately suspended it in search of dialogue. The premier has called for it to be puton hold “to start dialogue, to arrive at an agreed solution to advance with the demands of the people of Catalonia.” “With the results of October 1,
Catalonia has won the right to be an independent state," he said. “If everyone acts responsibly, the conflict can be resolved with calm.” Regional premier Carles Puigdemont: “That is what we are doing here in all solemnity and with the same solemnity we propose that Parliament suspends the declaration of independence to start dialogue to reach an agreed solution.” Central government sources stated they would take action over what they saw as a unilateral declaration of independence and a few days later the Popular Party government of Spain headed by Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy “accompanied” by the opposition Socialist (PSOE) Party have decided to activate section 155 of the Spanish Constitution – legislation that allows for Madrid to temporarily take control of the internal affairs of Catalonia – if Catalan Premier Carles Puigdemont does not renounce his independence declaration. This was the commitment made by Socialist leader Pedro Sánchez. Sánchez has also managed to commit Rajoy to a
project aimed at reforming Spain’s constitution, while both leaders have agreed that if section 155 is applied in the case of Catalonia, it must result in new regional elections. Rajoy has sent the Catalan government a formal notification asking it to clear up whether independence has indeed been declared; this was a preliminary step towards activating article 155. The notification from Madrid contains references to two time limits: the Catalan premier must clarify before 10am on Monday October 16 if he did or did not declare independence on 10th October, regardless of whether or not he then immediately suspended that declaration. If he did declare independence, Puigdemont then has until 10am on 19th October to withdraw the declaration and restore constitutional order. If that does not occur, Rajoy will “immediately activate” section 155 in the Senate. A statement from the prime minister’s official residence, La Moncloa, said the government considered the declaration made “deliberately confusing.” If
Puigdemont does not provide a clear answer to the notification from the government, Rajoy will assume that independence was declared, the statement reads. If Puigdemont does not reply to the request of the government, Rajoy will
have to send the Senate a detailed plan of the powers that it will take over from the Catalan government. This plan has already been discussed with representatives from the PSOE, but as the Popular Party holds the majority in the Senate, it will have no problems pushing through this strategy.

possible problems that may arise from any emergency.” Mayor Bascuñana stressed the importance of "being able to respond to any event that may happen and to ensure a quick, effective, and above all coordinated response". The Mayor said he valued "the involvement of all members of CECOPAL, and that they were ready to continue improving across all of the areas”. prison in 1938 are all here to see. “To these jewels are to be added the most important digital archive also belonging to the Miguel Hernández Cultural Foundation which includes private archives related to the poet like Ramón Sijé, María de Gracia Ifach and Juan Guerrero”, said the councillor, who thanked the director of the Miguel Hernández Foundation, Aitor Larrabide, for his generosity and commitment to Miguel Hernández. The Councillor explained that it has been the director who, together with the Department of Culture has created this documentary bank and made it available to anyone who wishes to consult it. A documentary bank that also has a children’s space. In addition to the documentary collections, visitors to the birthplace will be able to enjoy a small exhibition of posters about events related to the poet made in Orihuela since the 70s as well as paintings by renowned artists from Orihuela. Record October temperatures Temperatures have been soaring to up to an unseasonable high, with 33ºC being recorded midweek last week. This has lead to the unprecedented sight of full beaches in mid-October. The hottest climates, however, were in landlocked provinces such as Sevilla, Córdoba and Badajoz, although east and south coast areas also saw the mercury soar to around 30ºC. So far, this year has seen the warmest October this century after a mostly-sweltering September and an unusually cool and wet August. The end of last week, Thursday and Friday, saw the Guadalquivir Valley – which covers parts of the provinces of Córdoba and Sevilla – reach
temperatures of upto 36ºC. It is thought this month’s temperature could even beat the October record set 23 years ago – on the first day of the month in 2004, thermometers in Sevilla reached a whopping 36.6ºC. Normally, by this time of the year, practically everyone in Spain – even the Canary Islands – has the quilt back on the bed and needs anything from a light jacket to a full winter coat by the middle of October. Most of the country has seen cloudless skies and bright sunshine this week – conditions expected to continue for at least a few more days, according to the State meteorological agency, AEMET.
Spain’s education system could do better New research shows that Spain’s education system one of the worst among developed nations and that it is trailing behind Europe and other world leaders. Figures have revealed that 35 per cent of young Spaniards lack a highschool education, double the OECD average, putting Spain on a par with Argentina and Colombia. Spain is also among the leaders when it comes to pupils repeating courses, with a rate of 32 per cent. The average in the OECD, which includes countries outside Europe, is 12.4 per cent. In a crushing report by the European Commission, Spain was also listed as the EU country with the biggest number of school dropouts. Meanwhile, Spain doesn’t figure in the respected Shanghai Ranking’s 100 best universities in the world, despite the fact it is the 12th most powerful global economy. Switzerland, with just six million inhabitants, has five universities ranked on the list. These new findings underscore revelations last month that Spain is at the tail-end of Europe in terms of investment in education, sitting at the same level as Bulgaria and only just ahead of Romania, Ireland and Italy - out of a total of 28 countries. Spain earmarks barely 8 per cent of public
spending on education, compared to the EU average of 10 per cent and the OECD of almost 1 2 per cent. As a percentage of GDP that’s 4.1 per cent, one of the lowest levels in the EU.

Spanish equine sanctuary rescues yet another skeletal pony A severely malnourished pony stallion showing signs of physical abuse is now in the care of Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre in Rojales, Spain. Rescued from the streets of Algorfa in conjunction with Almoradí police on September 21, the pony known as Fudge is the sixth rescued by the sanctuary in five months, confirming an alarming trend of ponies being abandoned in public places. “When we started the centre nine years ago, we were rescuing animals that had been locked away and left to starve,” said Easy Horse Care co-founder Sue Weeding. “Now, they’re literally being dumped in the streets.” The influx of ponies is putting the centre under increasing financial pressure as it looks to provide the medical attention and care each abused equine needs. “They all come to us needing castration and with a whole host of health problems,” said Sue. “We pride ourselves on caring for them properly. We don’t just give them a bit of food to keep them alive.”
The latest rescue, which has gained international attention, was found in a skeletal state, with a massive infection in one eye and showing signs of what could well be deliberate physical abuse. A visible scar on his neck suggests Fudge suffered a significant blow that left two of his vertebrae broken, causing him to walk with a wobbly gait. Donations to help cover Fudge’s rehabilitation costs are gratefully received and can be made online: easyhorsecare.net/donate/one-offdonation. “This old boy is about 20 years old and it's absolutely heartbreaking to think what he’s suffered through,” said Sue. “It will be a time game for this fellow and we'll just take it one step at a time. Whatever the outcome, we will give him anything and everything he needs, and a whole lot of love on top.” Miniature ponies like Fudge can live well into their thirties, so once he’s had time to grow in strength, Fudge’s infected eye will be surgically removed and he’ll also be castrated. But in the short time since he arrived at the centre, he’s already
shown remarkable improvement. “When we arrived to rescue him, he wouldn’t even lift his head,” explained Sue. “Now he calls out to us and eats all day. I think he believes he’s in paradise now.” Fudge’s rescue takes the total number of equines at the sanctuary to 108. While Sue and her husband Rod Weeding continually work to re-home their rescues, they worry that without other options, the number of equines in their care will only continue to grow. “The situation is dire, because if we don’t take them, they’ll stay where they are,” said Sue. “And how can we, as caring people, say no when there’s no one else?” The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre relies entirely on donations to fund its important animal welfare work, including the feeding and care of the centre’s horses, ponies and donkeys rescued from abuse, neglect and abandonment. Donations of cash or items for the centre’s network of six charity shops across the Alicante province are gratefully welcomed. A pick-up service is available to collect large donated items such as
furniture and each shop also offers a delivery service for large items purchased in-store. The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre, located just outside Rojales at Partido Lo Garriga, 59, opens to the public on the
first Sunday of every month between 1pm and 4pm. Free horse tours run throughout the afternoon and refreshments are available in the café. For more details and directions, please visit www.easyhorsecare.net

Pink Ladies and Panthers back in full swing After a not so quiet summer Maria and the Pink Ladies and Panthers are back into full swing with fund raising for the AECC. September 29th saw two coffee mornings in aid of the charity. Looking Good Boutique at La Zenia jazzed up their coffee morning with a mini fashion show, a cake auction and lots of cava! Louise was very pleased to present Maria with €300 at the end of the event. The coffee morning at Bar La Vista, La Finca Golf Algorfa, was organised by the Algorfa Ladies and the money raised on the day was equally split between AECC, MacMillan Nurses and Paul
Cunningham Nurses, all receiving an amazing €650 each. Local businesses very kindly provided the raffle prizes including a spa day for two from Welcome Estates, who also donated 30 bottles of cava on the day. And last but not least! A big thank you to Smile who presented a cheque for €500 at Oasis Bar, Benijofar. Contact the AECC for information about booking appointments for mammograms, smear tests, prostate exams and skin cancer tests, a couple of minutes out of your day could save your life.

FACIAL FILLERS Facial fillers help to reshape the facial contour and correct fine wrinkles around the eyes and lips. Fillers are one of the star treatments in beauty clinics. Filler materials are biocompatible and absorbable. Their main indication is an ability to reposition lost volume. There are several absorbable fillers: Hyaluronic acid, polylactic acid, polycaprolactone or fat extracted from another body part. The most commonly used is Hyaluronic acid, a natural substance present in all living organisms and therefore also in our body, which can retain large amounts of water and whose use is ideal for volume and lubrication of the tissues. It is used to increase the volume of the cheekbones, chin, outline the lips and treat dark circles. APPLICATION It is applied through intradermal injections to revitalize the collagen, or subdermal - deeper - to replenish volume. Find out more at Clinica Mejorate (see advert on page 55)

Natural remedies for winter The weather may well be one of the warmest October´s on record but there still seems to be a huge amount of colds, sniffles and coughs lurking about. So here´s a few remedies to help fight the winter lurgy... The herbs here can ease coughs, congestion, and sore throats, and some may help prevent illness altogether. Seek out teas and herbal extracts at naturalfoods stores, and dried herbs from
sources such as jeansgreens.com or mountainroseherbs.com. As always, talk to your doctor before trying new remedies, particularly if your symptoms are severe, if you take medication, or if you have a chronic health condition. Echinacea A go-to herb for colds, this plant (Echinacea purpurea and E. angustifolia)
may help support your immune system to fight viruses. The root, leaves, and flowers are all medicinal. How to use: Take 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of tincture (herbal extract) every two hours until symptoms are gone. Echinacea also comes in tea blends. Elderberry The classic form for elderberry (Sambucus nigra) is a tasty syrup: European studies have shown it to be helpful for seasonal flu’s (talk to your doctor before using it for H1N1, or swine flu). How to use: Follow package directions for the syrup at the first sign of symptoms. Goldenseal For short-term use only, goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis) can help to clear up bacterial infections and restore the respiratory system lining after a bad cold. How to use: Goldenseal is very bitter, so stick to tinctures or capsules. Use small doses of this potent herb. Safety note: Pregnant women and those with hypertension should not use goldenseal. Elderflower The flower form of the elder plant (Sambucus nigra) can induce sweating, which may help reduce fever. How to use: Look for elder in cold formulas. To make a tea, pour boiling water over a teaspoon of dried elderflower. Steep for 10 to 15 minutes, then strain. Drink up to three cups per day. Or make a tea that combines elder, echinacea, and a pinch of peppermint. Ginger A cup of tea made with ginger (Zingiber officinale) can help ease congestion and warm the body, which helps your system fight infection. Its antiinflammatory properties make it a good sore-throat remedy, too. How to use: Simmer fresh or dried ginger for 20 minutes; strain and add a touch of honey and a squeeze of lemon, if desired. Incorporate ginger liberally into stir-fries and soups. Slippery Elm A sore-throat soother extraordinaire, slippery elm (Ulmus rubra) products are high in "mucilage," a substance that coats
the throat and helps relieve coughs. How to use: Look for slippery elm lozenges at health-food stores; follow package directions. To make a tea, simmer 1 tablespoon dried slippery elm bark per cup of water; strain and drink. Thyme Loaded with antibacterial compounds, fresh or dried thyme (Thymus vulgaris) is a cold-season powerhouse. How to use: Use fresh or dried thyme in stews and soups. To make a steam, pour near-boiling water into a pot. Add a pinch of fresh or dried thyme, turn off heat, and create a tent by draping a towel over your head and the pot. Breathe in steam for five minutes. Astragalus Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus), which has been used for centuries in Traditional Chinese Medicine, may help to strengthen the body against illness when used over time. How to use: Take astragalus in tincture or capsule form throughout the cold and flu season. You can also incorporate dried astragalus slices into soups or rice; remove the astragalus before serving. Eucalyptus With antibacterial and expectorant properties, eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) can loosen congestion and help you breathe easier. How to use: Pour near-boiling water into a pot. Add a few drops of eucalyptus essential oil, turn off heat, and drape a towel over your head and the pot. Breathe for five minutes. Safety note: Do not use essential oils internally. Eleuthero Also known as Siberian ginseng, this well-studied herb (Eleutherococcus senticosus) can help your body resist the effects of stress and boost your immune system. How to use: Take in tincture or capsule form, or make an immunity chai by blending eleuthero with cardamom, ginger, and cinnamon. Simmer for 20 minutes and strain; drink two to three cups daily. Mullein Mullein (Verbascum thapsus) has expectorant and soothing properties that
make it a cough treatment supreme. How to use: For coughs, try mullein tea: Pour a cup of boiling water over a tablespoon of mullein leaves; let steep for 20 minutes and strain. Add honey and lemon to mask the bitter taste. Treat ear infections with drops of oil infused with mullein and garlic. Tulsi Believed to boost overall health, tulsi (Ocimum sanctum) -- also known as holy basil -- contains antiviral and antibacterial compounds. It may help prevent illness when used over time. How to use: Tulsi makes a delicious tea; look for it in packaged form or brew your own with loose tulsi. Aim for two to three cups daily. Yin Chiao This centuries-old Chinese formula stars a number of immune-boosting herbs and can help ease cold symptoms such as sneezing and congestion. How to use: Use at the first sign of illness; follow package directions or consult with a TCM practitioner. Sage Common culinary sage (Salvia officinalis) can help to ease sore throats and dry up sinuses. How to use: For a sore throat, make a strong tea by pouring 4 ounces of water over 2 teaspoons of dried or fresh sage. Cool to room temperature. Gargle until the mixture is gone. Repeat three times daily. For drippy sinuses, drink a cup of regular-strength sage tea. Licorice Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) has immune-boosting and throat-soothing properties that make it an excellent addition to cough and cold formulas. How to use: For coughs, make a tea that combines mullein leaf with a pinch of licorice. Safety note: People who have high blood pressure should avoid this herb or use the deglycyrrhizinated form (look for "DGL" on packaging). Sip Oolong Tea Research suggests that people with mild eczema who drink oolong tea three times a day may show improvement in itching and other symptoms. Compounds in the tea called polyphenols appear to be responsible. Rub Your Temples Tame tension headaches by rubbing peppermint oil, Tiger Balm, or white flower oil into your temples. All three remedies contain menthol, which has analgesic properties. Enjoy Ginger The volatile oils in ginger have long made it a useful herbal remedy for nasal and chest congestion. Pour 2 cups of boiling water over a 1-inch piece of peeled, grated ginger; steep for 10 minutes; and strain. Add a pinch or two of cayenne pepper to the water and drink as needed. Sniff Rosemary According to some research, catching a whiff of this aromatic herb may increase alertness and improve memory. To stay sharp, try smelling fresh rosemary or inhaling the scent of rosemary essential oil before a test or meeting. Embrace Bitters Combat a yen for sugar by following a Chinese medicine approach: Eat foods such as endive, radicchio, cooked greens, and olives.

If you fancy having a copy of Aunty Virus automatically delivered to your email inbox then go to www.enetcomputers.net and click on the “Subscribe” button. Sue via email asks: Hi Aunty, I hope you can help. I have an Apple Mac laptop which has worked fine until recently when I returned from the UK to Spain. Now when I want to send a message I get an error that says “the password or outgoing server settings may need changing”. I haven't changed anything and my password is definitely correct. I can use the passwords on the MSN website and on my iPhone and iPad. Any help would be greatly appreciated because although I can get into my mail on my laptop through MSN it is inconvenient and I have difficulty sending attachments because they are all in Pages. Aunty Says: Hello Sue. Unfortunately Microsoft are forever messing around with their email systems and I suspect this is what has happened with your MSN account. If you go to the website www.apple.com/support/mail-settingslookup/ and enter your MSN email address you will get a list of all the correct settings that you can check against the ones you have setup in your Mail app on your Macbook. There is also an option to add a new account in
Technology
Apple Mail which is via “Preferences” “Accounts” and click the plus sign beneath the accounts list. Good luck and let me know how you get on. Meg via email asks: I unplugged my 32GB USB stick from my laptop without ejecting it properly and now every time I plug it in, Windows says there are errors that need fixing. I click on the Scan & Fix message which it finishes after around
20 minutes but it does this every time and it terribly annoying. Is this something I can fix permanently? I never normally unplug my USB stick without ejecting it properly but I thought Windows had closed properly but it was still running 10 minutes after I had shut down. Aunty Says: Hi Meg. There are loads of free tools available that can check and fix errors
59
on USB sticks but personally once they show any signs of playing up I ditch them, and for under €10 for a 32GB it’s not worth risking losing your data. As you know we must always use the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in the bottom right corner (maybe need to click the tiny arrow to see it) but sometimes even doing this doesn’t always work & like most things electronic these days, it is probably made in China and will just go wrong. Gavin from La Mata asks: Hello Aunty. I keep getting a message saying “OneDrive cannot sync with the server” I don’t know what Onedrive is and how it got on to my laptop as I haven’t installed it myself, is this some type of spyware? Aunty Says: Hello Gavin. OneDrive is a Microsoft product which now comes bundled with Windows is simply a internet storage service (The Cloud) where you can upload files and photos and maybe share them with your phone etc. If you don’t want to use this service you can switch it off in Windows 10 by right clicking on the small cloud icon in the bottom right corner of your desktop and go to “settings” where you can stop OneDrive automatically starting. Any questions you can email me at auntyvirus@costablancapeople.com and I’ll see you all next week.

The Members Golf Society 40 members “found” their way to this tricky little course nestled between Rojales and Ciudad Quesada. It’s not so easy to find and certainly do not rely on your sat nav! It can’t find it either. But when you do find it what a surprise you’ll have, forget all of that bad publicity of years ago; this course is definitely on the up! It is a pleasure to play it. That having been said we are now in the “silly season” whereby all of the courses are flooded with too many players, so the 5 hr round is now the normality once again. Results: N.T.P.’s hole 5 K. Winton, hole 11 M. Kennedy, hole 15 J. Hettrick, hole 17 L. Holmberg. Two “2’s” winners this week each receiving €20 well done to Kenny Winton and Lars Jernberg. Best guest was Mrs. C. Martin. 36 points. Bronze cat: 3rd S. Twentyman 32 pts. 2nd L. Holmberg 34 pts. 1st K. Krog 40 pts. Silver cat: 3rd T.

San Miguel Golf Society Not well signposted, and even with a different name (Terrazas de La Torre) on arrival to that expected it was not surprising that some people got lost, the final 4 ball making their way to El Valle before backtracking and arriving just before their tee off time. So, eventually, 30 members and 10 guests took to the course. The curse of Saurines is the collar edging the fairways and dirt mounds scattered about therein. Up against that and there is often little one can do except wedge out. The somewhat woolly greens that have, apparently, been hollow-tined and treated 5 times this summer and are only now getting back to being reasonable, meant the many borrows present weren’t always followed by the ball as expected. However, quite a number of players overcame the difficulties to score well. Best returns of
the day went to Noel Bannon and Richard Cleary, both with 38 points. The day’s stableford competition results, by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 3rd Mary Cleary (34), 2nd Ralph Tilbrook (37 on CB), and 1st Brian Butler, also with 37 points. Silver Category: 3rd Brian Mulligan (35), 2nd Dave Blackburn (37), and 1st Richard Cleary with 38 points. Gold Category: 3rd Humphrey Kelleher (36 on CB), 2nd Norman Cahill (36 on CB), and 1st Noel Bannon with 38 points. Nearest the pins on the par 3’s (open to all) went to Norman Cahill (hole 6), Peter Devlin (10), Dave Whitby (14) and Tony Smale (18). The Abacus was won by Derek Johnston. The Best Guest prizes went to Phil
Bache (38) and Graham McNeill (37) Our thanks go to the staff at Saurines for their contribution to the day. Keep up to date with all SMGS matters by logging on to our website www.smgs.org or simply give Tony Smale a call on 628227687 to find out more about the society and its weekly golf gettogethers. Next week we willbe at Font de Llop.

Your week in sport
La Siesta Bowls La Siesta began their preparations for the Winter League Season with a friendly triples fixture against local neighbours Greenlands in beautiful sunny weather. Four rinks being played at La Siesta and four at Greenlands. At La Siesta the home team won on 3 rinks and lost on 1 so it was up to the four rinks at Greenlands to see if La Siesta could maintain their advantage. With La Siesta winning comfortably on two of the rinks and finishing level on the other two the overall result saw La Siesta coming up tops. Members from both clubs now travel together for an away trip to Benalmadena to play matches in the Costa del Sol with no doubt some shopping in Gibraltar for good measure. Whilst members were away in the Costa del Sol a 3 rink match was played against Campsie Bowls Club who hail from Scotland. The match was a close encounter throughout and finished up with the shots score equal at 46 shots each. La Siesta winning on two rinks by 15-13 and 17-15 whilst Campsie won the other rink by 18-14.Norma Adcroft, skipping for La Siesta ,on the final end managed to get 2 shots with his final bowl to obtain his rink’s 2 shot victory. Our Winter League team commenced their season with an away fixture that is always tricky against formidable near
neighbours San Luis. However, on this occasion La Siesta rose to the task and came away with victory by 10 points to 2.The shots difference being 82 to 64 which was helped by an outstanding performance by Joy Gardiner, Jim Hudson Dave Blackie and Jean Cooper who won by 20 shots to 6. The other wins came from Pat and Trish Reilly with Mike and Florence Edwards who won 14-11,Val Dalton, Derek Smith, Brian Gardiner and Irene Mangan who won 19-13 and Barbara Cooper, George Richardson, Sue Jordan and Brian Fraser who won 18-15. In the Southern League B Division the Blues entertained Quesada Swifts winning on 5 rinks and drawing the other gaining 13 points to their opponents 1 with
a shots advantage of 109 to 82.The best winning rink was Sheila Chorley with Bill and Sue Jordan who won 25-10.There was a good win for Pat Moore, Dave Blackie and George Richardson 18-11.The remaining rinks were all close affairs with the biggest winning margin being 2 shots. In the Southern League C Division the Golds took the long trip to La Manga Crusaders to play their hosts on the grass surface which is always difficult for visiting teams. So it was no surprise that the Golds were well beaten the home side winning on all rinks gaining a 14-0 win by 179 shots to 51.Best triple for La Siesta was Hilary Clarke,Derek Smith and Pat Reilly who lost by 16 shots to 13.

You probably know this column well enough now to know that if I am mentioning equestrian, boxing and tennis without bringing up any cricket, F1 or governing body shenanigans then it has been a quiet week in sport. Actually, hang on. Some governing bodies have been acting like fools once again. Even on a quiet week, eh? Hot on the heels of the GB bobsleigh team holding an internal investigation of their head coach making inappropriate comments to some of the squad, and the England Women’s football team Head Coach being sacked for previously being believed to have had inappropriate dialogue with players when in charge at Bristol and having been passed fit to employ by the FA it is time for British Equestrian to investigate claims of “alleged elitism, self-interest, bullying and corruption”. What’s that? Alleged elitism in equestrian? I think we can remove the alleged from that, can’t we? It’s the horses I feel sorry for. Their corrupt little culture is about to get blown

It’s not just equestrian that is under the spotlight. The GB Paralympic swimming head coach is also under investigation for alleged bullying. It has also come to light that Rob Greenwood resigned from his senior role within the police for being caught making fun of a disabled person with a colleague. But of course, these reference checks always get done properly, don’t they. Maria Sharapova is back doing what she does best (no, not that - she got banned for that) and has won her first title since being banned for drug taking earlier this year. Her reward for winning the Tinjan Open was being forced to have a photo taken with the trophy
and a lifesize Angry Bird. I do hope that Sharapova is forced to have her photo taken with all kinds of animated games brought to life until she admits she knew exactly what she was taking for all those years. Rafa Nadal’s cracking little run was brought to an end by Roger Federer in the men’s draw at Tinjan and, rightly so as it’s Rog, there were no Angry Birds loitering for photo opportunities. They have semi-finals and everything in boxing now, and George Groves won his supermiddleweight bout against Jamie Cox, meaning he now gets to box at Wembley in the final, walking out in front of 90,000 fans, singing Abide with Me and probably losing on penalties. Oh no, sorry. That’s football, not boxing, Still, those guys at Wembley have got to keep chipping away at paying for that stadium somehow.
Ruby’s Golf With the tricky El Valle course, our venue for this month’s Trophy game, and 6 or so players all within a few points of the top of the table, the day had much excitement in store. Despite some maintenance issues the course played well although a bit slow, however all went well and some good scores were returned, the results are as follows; Nearest the pin on the par 3's were Jim McCarthy, Roger Clarke, David Jones and Nigel Wright, who also hit nearest the pin in two shots. Best front nine was Brian
Wilson and best back Tony Harrison, the gold division winner was Jim McCarthy, the silver and overall winner was Mike Thomas with a handicap cut that takes him back into the gold division, and he beat his wife at last ! The two's pot was shared between Roy Stanley and Nigel Wright. Back at Rayz bar where we had a nice buffet, thanks for that, the luck kept coming for Jim McCarthy who also won the football card. Our next trophy game is at Alicante on the 20th of October where this year’s fight for the top spot continues. To contact Ruby's golf email us on rubysgolf@yahoo.co.uk

Tales from the Top Flight ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com
Once more, the Premier League returned to our TV screens this weekend. And once more, there was worldwide shock, anger and dismay as a post international break early kick off involving Jose Mourinho ended a 0-0 borefest. But, as Jose will no doubt attest to, it’s 0-0 draws at Anfield that lead to winning titles - especially when you have a team that typically puts away the lesser teams in the league unlike a team like, for example, Liverpool. Or Arsenal. Or, on this weekend’s showing, Chelsea. To the naked eye, it was quite easy to understand why Mourinho elected to play incredibly deep against Jurgen Klopp’s men. He was without his main man, his key midfielder, the heartbeat of the United side. Yes, Marouane Fellaini picked up an injury playing for Belgium
so was unavailable. United sat so deep that Romelu Lukaku only had about 20 touches of the ball in the entire game, and at least 6 of them were used up trying to bring his first touch under control. The other 14 were equally unremarkable. Klopp was not impressed with United’s approach after the match, but rather than moan about it Jurgen, why not come up with something that resembles a plan B so you can break down teams that play like this against you? It’s not just United that have successfully shut up shop against Liverpool’s alleged “electric attack”, plenty of others have camped out in their own penalty area and left with at least a point. It wasn’t just Kloppo having a good old whinge after the game, he was joined by Arsene Wenger somewhat predictably. Yes Arsene, Richarlison took a bit of a tumble and got a penalty where he shouldn’t have but really? You are away to Watford, and even if they are having a good start to their season you don’t go to Watford and lose if you plan to win 4th place, do you? And even if you were hard done by for the spot kick, what excuse is there for not clearing that ball into Row Z in injury time, before Cleverly got the third chance to score the winner? There is none Arsene, there is none and you will do well to be top six this season playing like that. It’s no wonder that Alexis Sanchez might be “mentally” not quite right at the moment. Troy Deeney had a slightly different view on the Arsenal, claiming they merely lack the “cojones” to compete in matches like that. Coming from a fat lad playing up front, that’s a great shout from Troy.
Roy Hodgson, I take it all back. I honestly believed that you are nothing but an old man who is massively out of touch with the modern game. I had money on the fact that your Crystal Palace team would go ten games without winning or even scoring. I saw Chelsea putting more than two past you at Selhurst Park. In true Palace style, they did not even manage to score their first goal of the season - they left that honour to Chelsea’s Cesar Azpilicueta. But even though they gave Chelsea a freebie equaliser, Palace rallied and Wilf Zaha did what he does best, scoring and then celebrating with the most genuine passion you will see in this circus of a Premier League. Never leave Palace again, Wilf. It’s just not worth it. As for Chelsea? If anyone can find Michy Batshuayi’s dummy, would they mind returning it to the Belgian international? You won’t catch Roy Hodgson getting carried away though, oh no. He immediately made it clear that Crystal Palace “would be foolish to think they’ve earned a fresh start” just because they finally managed to score some goals, get some points and beat the league champions. Way to rally the troops Roy, way to rally the troops. Allow me to be the first one to point out that if Sam Allardyce was still the manager at West Ham United and they scored the goal they scored at Burnley, the fans would be demanding his resignation. Pep Guardiola said Joe Hart could not pass a ball. Pep was clearly wrong, as Joe launched one hell of a pass over the Burnley back four for Antonio to run on to and score. There is nothing wrong with a bit of hoof ball at the right time, boys. Burnley battled back as normal and Chris Wood
equalised. Andy Carroll is clearly having to come up with new ways to play as few minutes as possible, managing to pick up two yellow cards in a matter of minutes and leaving the Hammers with ten men. You won’t catch Manchester City scoring many goals like West Ham’s. They cruised into a 3-0 lead against Stoke City before Stoke massively upset them by scoring two of their own. That proved to be Stoke’s downfall as City turned it on again, scoring a further four and winning 7-2. I reckon there is an office sweepstake going on, where City staff are guessing how many times the players can pass it to each other in the opposition penalty area before sliding it into an open goal. There was more shock horror at Wembley as Tottenham not only won a league match, but Harry Kane did not score the goal for Harry Kane FC. This time the honour fell to Christian Eriksen and Bournemouth were the fall guys. Pochettino also said he would be “honoured” to manage England one day. Fancy a one month gig sometime next summer, Mauricio? Gareth won’t mind, he looks like he has aged a decade already. Saturday will also be a day that Huddersfield Town look back on as the day it became clear they will be relegated. Their goalkeeper picked out Swansea’s Tom Carroll perfectly who laid it on for Tammy Abraham, scoring a goal that has “going down” written all over it. Abraham got a second, and he may well look back at this Saturday as the moment he became a Premier League striker.
With seven minutes to go, you could have forgiven Ronald Koeman for putting a call into his PA to start clearing his desk at Goodison Park. Brighton led 1-0, heading for their third straight win. Yet, with one minute remaining, it became clear why Koeman had gambled on leaving Rooney on the pitch. It was just in case they got a penalty. They did, Rooney took it and Rooney scored. Rooney was promptly substituted and Koeman probably lives to see another week. “Rafa is the master of the 1-0,” they said on Sky Sports as Newcastle led Southampton 1-0 at St Mary’s. Wise words you’d imagine, especially as Southampton typically fail to hit a cow’s bottom with a banjo. Yet Marco’s son, Manolo Gabbiadini (and he scores so rarely now that gag has got mothballs) managed to score a fine individual goal to level matters, only to see big Fraser chuck one in 84 seconds later. Still, he’s the master of the 2-1 is Rafa. Well maybe not, as Gabbiadini was gifted the chance to level things once more from the spot. In fairness, the game was a shed load more entertaining than anything else on Sky this weekend. We end today with a little aside on the state of Scottish football. There’s good news and bad news for the Scots. Actually, that’s incorrect. It’s bad news and bad news. The bad news is Sam Allardyce is “tempted” by the job but the timing is not right. The other bad news is that David Moyes “could not turn down his country” and the timing is absolutely bang on for the sacked Sunderland and Manchester United manager who is currently completely unemployable.
3rd World Oceanman Championships On Sunday Benidorm hosted the 3rd World Oceanman Championships. Over 1000 swimmers participated in 3 races distances 9.3km, 5.5km and 1500m around the rock which can be seen off the coast in Benidorm. After a sell-out registration for the event the atmosphere on Mal Pas Beach was electric. At 8am swimmers in the 9.3km race left Mal Pas Beach and the 5.5km swimmers were ferried by boats to the front of
Benidorm Island were they began the race in the water. The 200 swimmers had to race around the island and back to Mal Pas Beach. Lastly the 1500m race started on Mal Pas Beach. Local swimmers from “Club Natación Elche”, Zoe and Vicki Connolly, qualified for this year’s competition after success in the Oceanman 5km Isla Tabarca race in May 2017. And after a hard swim on Sunday success was once again achieved. Zoe’s swim
earned her 1st place and she is this year’s Junior World Half Oceanman Female Champion. A title she has kept for the second year running. Zoe finished as the overall 2nd female from all age categories in the World 5.5km race with a time of 1:28:52. Mum, Vicki, was placed 3rd in the 50-59 years category in the same race and finished 16th female with a time of 1:50:54. This was a rewarding end to the Open Water Swimming Season 2017.

Children in Cars
Back to school time has come and gone and, across the country, children are setting into their routine, with many taking to the bus, some walking or cycling to school, and many others traveling in cars. It is important to remember that children are amongst the most vulnerable passenger groups in vehicles, and their protection should be of the utmost concern to all. Sadly, it only takes a momentary lapse for the defences to fall and those children to be placed in the utmost danger, often when the adults are distracted, but sometimes because of a lack of knowledge or ignorance. All children measuring 135 cm in height or less must ride in the rear seats of a vehicle, irrespective of their age, and in addition to the requirements of the correct seat being provided appropriate to their size and weight. There are a number of exceptions to the rule, for example, when the vehicle does not have rear seats, when all rear seats are already occupied by others under the same characteristics, and where it is not possible to install approved
child restraints in those rear seats. These are the only occasions when children may occupy a front seat, but they must always use the restraint system approved for their height and weight. This new provision entered into law in 2015, and also stipulates that child restraints must be installed in the vehicle in accordance with the instructions provided by the manufacturer and the instructions that will indicate how and what kind of vehicles can be used safely. With this modification the EU Directive 2014/37 / EU on the compulsory use of safety belts and child restraints in vehicles is applied. The modification of the law also reflects the scientific evidence from numerous studies that demonstrate the benefit of children traveling in the rear seats of vehicles in order to strengthen their protection. A study in the United States looked at 5,751 vehicle occupants under the age of 15 who had suffered a serious car incident. The report shows that sitting in the back seat had a protective effect with respect to serious injury or death.
A further study in Australia concluded that the risk of death in children under 4 years of age involved in an incident whilst travelling in a car was doubled if they sat in the front. The risk of death was four times higher if the person was under 1 year of age, according to the study. Not only is the overall risk of injury higher in the front seats, but also the severity of injuries sustained, according to the CIREN institution, the Crash Injury Research Engineering Network. The change to the law in Spain was prompted on account of the DGT seeing growing concerns for the safety of children in vehicles. In 2014, 2 of the 14 children under 12 years of age who were killed whilst travelling in vehicles were not wearing any safety device at the time. It was the same for 9 out of the 82 children who were seriously injured, they too were not wearing any kind of restraint. The DGT therefore made it one of their priority objectives in the 2011-2020 Road Safety Strategy, to ensure that no child loses their life as a
result of not being properly restrained. Therefore, as well as clarifying the laws and making them easier to understand, the DGT have also increased the powers of the traffic police in dealing with adults who fail to take necessary responsibility for children, including the immediate immobilisation of a vehicle where children are found to be travelling without appropriate safety restraints. To make the matter even clearer, there are a number of Golden Rules that must be followed regarding children in vehicle. Never carry a child in your arms or use the same seat belt that is protecting the adult. The use of child restraint systems (CRS) reduced the risk of death by 75% and the severity of injuries by 90%. Make sure the seat is properly installed. It should not move and ought to be properly secured, the recommended option being the Isofix anchorage system
The child's head should never hover higher than or over the back of the seat. If this happens it must be replaced by another of a suitable size. If the child has to ride in the front seat, because of one of the three exceptions, if the vehicle has front airbags, you must only use a rear-facing restraint if the airbag has been deactivated. Always make sure that the restraints are well anchored, even on short journeys, where the highest number of risk behaviours accumulate. It is recommended that you continue to use appropriate and approved child restraint system until the child reaches 150 cm in height. Once a child is taller than 150 cm, then they must use the vehicle seat belt. It is important to note that it is the responsibility of the adults transporting children to ensure their safety, as well as their own
