Carols in Torrevieja Square

On Friday 15th December it was the annual international carol service held in the Plaza de la ConstituciĂłn in front of the church, La Inmaculada ConcepciĂłn. The Phoenix Concert Band were once again the essential ingredient and they entertained and accompanied the international crowd once more at this popular, annual event. Many familiar faces were there to lead the singing including The Rascals, Studio32, Cantabile and Crescendo. The

evening began at 6.00pm and was an ideal opportunity for families and individuals to come down to the town centre and enjoy the very special atmosphere. The BelĂŠn nativity scene is also on display there and people could take time to browse around this too. A Christmas tree and a snow machine helped to re-create a little more of the Christmas atmosphere. During the evening there was a collection for the charity Reach Out/ Extiende la mano. This organisation help the homeless and those struggling to make ends meet in Torrevieja. The Continued on page 3

On 27th November the San Luis/ La Siesta neighbourhood watch had their first successful meeting with Doug Allen as the new president. Doug would now like to remind people that there will not be a meeting in December but that they should pencil in their diaries the next meeting date of 29th January at Casa Ventura at 4.30pm. The focus of this meeting will be on home security and a legal advisor will be able to offer free advice. The meetings provide an opportunity for local residents to place their questions to a town hall representative and also to receive feedback about issues raised previously. Doug would also like to remind people to take a look at the San Luis/ La Siesta neighbourhood watch site. Whilst waiting for the next meeting there is opportunity to keep in touch via the website. The group is pleased with recent developments including the opportunity to meet with the mayor, José Manuel Dolón and Councillor Carmen Morate.

Woman rescued from fire The Local police rescued the elderly woman and the firefighters put out the fire which had engulfed the dining room and bathroom of the property on the 16th December. The cause of the fire is yet unknown but it’s believed to have started at around 6.30 on Saturday morning in a property on calle Camilo José Cela. The local police were the first to arrive at the scene to assist the woman who had Continued on page 5

wanted to join in and sing along. It isn’t a long evening as the concert must finish in time for the church’s usual evening mass. However, in the distinctly warmer climate to where most of us have sung carols in the past, and with the backdrop of palm trees and a traditional Spanish square, it was definitely worth attending. Torrevieja fish market second biggest in Valencia The fish market in Torrevieja has come in for congratulations for landing some of the biggest catches in the Valencian community. Altogether its catches have brought in around four million euros and consist of 2.5 million kilos of anchovies and sardines. There are currently 20 ports where fish are currently auctioned in the Valencian community. Torrevieja comes in as being the second most successful for the quantity that it lands just behind that of Castellón. However, it’s not too much of a

cause for celebration as the overall quantity is down on the catches brought in during the previous year of 2016. The fish market continues to sell mostly sardines (1.2 million euros) and anchovies (2.1 million euros) which are always in big demand. Although the number of fish caught is down overall, the positive position of the port in relation to others in the region shows how important this industry is to the town. Suzanne O’Connell

Christmas Fun with the Velvetones Quesada Ladies Club at Casa Contenta, Rojales invited the Velvetones to entertain them with a Christmas repertoire last week. The ladies joined in the fun and a good time was had by all with the club giving a generous donation to go to the Velvetones’ chosen charity, ALPE special school in Torrevieja. The Velvetones carried on the fun by joining the patrons of the Bridge Bar, Rojales for more Christmas entertainment. The clients there passed round the charity bin

and again generous donations were made. A spokesperson for Velvetones told the Costa Blanca People, “We would like to thank both of these groups for making the afternoon and evening so enjoyable. Drunk driver crashes with police A driver who tested for double the quantity of alcohol allowed crashed into a local police car in Torrevieja on the 9th December. The driver had already jumped a police stop and check where calle Almudena joins Maestro Francisco Casanovas. It was a serious crash that left the patrol car bonnet smashed in. Fortunately the police officers were not injured during the impact. The accident happened on Saturday morning at 2.25am. The vehicle was a BMW model 530 and was driven at speed. Information about the collision has

only just been released. The patrol car was unable to avoid the oncoming car which hit it on Calle Maestro Casanovas. The police were not chasing the BMW but had been called out to deal with complaints about noise and music in a nearby house. The driver was arrested and tested positive for alcohol at double the allowed level. The driver claimed not to have seen the stop sign or the police patrol car. The case has now gone to court number 2 in Torrevieja. Suzanne O’Connell

No panto for Stagestruck but the show goes on If you are usually a member of the Stagestruck panto audience at this time of year you might be wondering what has happened to their Christmas performance? Normally the Costa Blanca people would have been giving a plug to this popular theatre group’s annual Christmas show throughout November.

Last year’s Christmas panto antics

However, unfortunately this year, the ill health of the director meant they had to cancel their usual pantomime. However, the group has not been

inactive during this time. Stagestruck has continued to raise money for charity through presenting their Murder Mysteries in local bars. They also recently showcased their individual talents with a variety evening including singing, dancing, comedy sketches and monologues. The variety show was hosted by Leaf’s bar in Quesada on two separate evenings to a packed audience. Following these shows €2,000 was raised from the ticket sales and raffle tickets. This combined with the money from the Murder Mysteries will mean a total of €2,000 will be donated to Torrevieja’s Alzheimer’s Association. Now, looking forward to 2018, the group are anticipating a return to normal with rehearsals beginning in January for their summer production. This show will be a musical comedy from an original script written by director, Leigh Humphries. If you would like to be informed of future Stagestruck shows and events you can be added to the mailing list by emailing leigh.humphries58@gmail.com Suzanne O’Connell

been affected by smoke. A few minutes later the fire engine arrived. The fire had destroyed around 80% of the property with only the two bedrooms surviving although these were also affected by smoke.

Two injured in car and scooter crash Two people were left injured following a collision between a car and a scooter in the Avenida Purísima in Torrevieja. The car was coming out of a side street whilst the scooter was driving along the main road close to La Cura beach. The accident took place on Saturday 16th December at around 2pm. Two ambulances attended the scene along with the Local Police and Guardia Civil. The street had to be cleaned following the accident as fuel had leaked from the scooter’s fuel tank. Firefighters then made sure that the area was clear and would not cause vehicles to skid. The impact of the accident meant that the scooter travelled some distance and blocked the road which then had to be closed off to other vehicles.

Boat sinks in Torrevieja port A small fishing boat of nine metres length had to be refloated on Saturday afternoon 16th December after sinking in the port. The boat, called Susana, came from Santa Pola and the reasons why it started to sink are yet unknown. No one was on board at the time and when its owner was told he could only watch helplessly as his fishing boat sank. The boat was moored next to the fish market and its condition caused much interest amongst passers by. It was brought back to the surface by a crane but fuel had already leaked into the harbour.

Third age residents enjoy the carols On Friday 15th December volunteers from Age Concern spent a couple of hours with the English and Spanish residents of Residencia 3 Edad mediterraneo care home in Rojales. The carols were sung in both English and Spanish by the Rascals choir whilst more than two dozen of the residents sat in the garden. The Rascals distributed tambourines and handbells to the residents which they enjoyed playing. Father Christmas made an appearance and handed out Christmas gifts of chocolates followed by the staff of the home who brought out trays of biscuits and cakes. The afternoon came to a close with a little dancing. The home is visited every Friday by Age Concern volunteers who take some of the residents out either on foot or in their wheelchairs for a stroll around Rojales. They sometimes stop for a coffee but generally just enjoy the changes of scenery and chance to have a chat. Christmas events in Torrevieja Christmas is nearly upon us but if you haven’t yet bought all your presents or you’re looking for something a little different to do then you might want to check what the retail association in Torrevieja has got planned over the Christmas period. In the Plaza de la Constitución there will be singing on Thursday 21st December from 11.30am until 1.30pm and on Friday 22nd from 9am until 5.30pm. As the Spanish Christmas lottery is announced you can hear the winning numbers as they will be broadcast live. The numbers are sung by school children who have been practising all year long for the privilege. On 23rd December there will be a mail train passing through the town to collect letters from the town shops. It will pass through Acequión at 11am until 1pm and the town centre from 6pm until 8pm. On Sunday 24th there will be a delivery of toys and gifts to the hospitals

in Torrevieja. This initiative is a joint one between the town hall and the retail association APYMECO. After Christmas, on Saturday 30th you can enjoy a children’s New Year’s Eve celebration in the paseo Vista Alegre at 10am with live music, various workshops, plays and music. On January 4th 2018 there will be a tour by the Three Kings accompanied by their elves. They will collect letters from different shops and businesses between 6pm and 8pm in Torrevieja and in La Mata from 11am in the morning until 1pm. There is a competition for the best shop window display with three prizes. The first prize is €650, the second €400 and the third prize €250. You can find out more information about what’s planned at www.shoppingtorrevieja.com or on APYMECO’s Facebook page. Suzanne O’Connell

Local police get tough on fly tippers The mayor of Torrevieja, José Manuel Dolón, has instructed the local police to increase their vigilance and be on the look out for people who illegally dump the rubbish from their business into bins meant for domestic use only. The police will sanction people who they recognise as breaking the local Ordenanza Municipal de Fomento de Medioambiente. They can issue a €100 fine for putting waste into a bin that is only intended for the general public to use. It is believed that those most guilty are professional gardeners who use the bins to dump

green waste. Once the bins are full then the people who are entitled to use them end up leaving their refuse around the bin which altogether become unsightly and unhygienic. The mayor is keen to emphasise that tightening up on breaches of the law is not a case of trying to raise more money for the town hall but is to stop this practice happening. It is inconvenient and unpleasant for the people who live in these areas and it is hoped the new approach will have the desired effect. Suzanne O’Connell

Flat destroyed by fire BITE SIZE NEWS: On Monday night 11th December an intense fire broke out in a flat in the centre of Torrevieja. The heat and flames generated during the fire has been put down to the large quantity of plastic, paper and bottles that had been accumulated in the bedrooms and on the balcony of the second floor flat on calle San Julían. Some of the neighbours told reporters that they had informed social services of the problem. The occupants of the flat are an 88 year old woman and her handicapped

and minor burns. The cause of the fire is not yet known. However, there is no doubt that it was helped to spread more quickly and with such ferocity due to the hundreds of kilos of rubbish that lay strewn around the flat. The police were not only instrumental in rescuing those living in the flat but also returned into the burning building to help those trapped in other premises above the one affected. Four police officers, Florentina, Antonio, José Antonio and Victor were on duty when they could

Torrevieja suffers from several minor earthquakes each year as there are two faults close by in Crevillente and Bajo Segura. The latter being the one that caused the earthquake in 1829. In 2011 there was a large earthquake in Lorca and the council of Torrevieja are aware of the importance of keeping up-to-date with the latest information and advice about what to do to prevent loss of life if a large quake should take place. During the seminar information was shared about how to act during and after an Earthquake.

The Local Police and the Guardia Civil had to act very quickly once they were aware of the fire. It was police officers who rescued the 88 year old woman who had reduced mobility and her son. They were found in the doorway trying to escape from the flames. They were taken to hospital suffering from the inhalation of smoke

The first rescue was the disabled man and his mother and the police then returned to rescue a neighbour on the third floor. This person was told to go onto the terrace from where they could be reached from an adjoining building. The final rescue was from the fourth floor. Fortunately no one was seriously injured. The town hall in Torrevieja has created 50 new bicycle parking spaces in the town. The new parking spaces are in the service road next to the Paseo de Vista Alegre and are in addition to the 35 that are already in place at the Marina Salinas. In addition, a walkway for pedestrians has also been created down to Torrevieja’s port. This is instead of the bike path which was being used by pedestrians anyway and was agreed by the port authorities in order to improve the movement of vehicles and pedestrians to and from the port. The nine police officers arrested for corruption have now been released on bail. The officers have been released from prison following the payment of between €3,000 and €18,000 each. They are accused of drug trafficking, fraud, bribery, failure to follow up crimes and the sharing of classified information. The nine officers are from Torrevieja and Pilar de la Horadada and had been imprisoned for more than a month after being arrested by their colleagues during the on going investigation. The bail announcement was made in court number 2 Torrevieja where the judge decided they could be released on condition of payment. Altogether at least 26 people are being investigated

as part of the case and four people who are not police officers continue in custody. Those accused will be required to appear in court twice a month and have had their passports removed. They are not allowed to leave Spain in the meantime or carry firearms. Operation ‘Sakura’ was opened early in 2016 and targeted an organisation known for trafficking drugs which was also presumed to have the continued collaboration of members of the police force. During the investigation other crimes have also been revealed that are not directly linked to the drug trafficking organisation. Suzanne O’Connell

Cyberbullying blamed The council will sit comfortably for student death

in Almoradí

LIBRARY IMAGE

The police are still investigating the suicide on Thursday 14th December of an 18 year oid student as a result of a suspected case of cyberbullying. The young man left a note but didn’t blame anyone for the decision to take his own life. The victim was originally from Almoradí although during the last year he had moved and was living with his family in Guardamar. The parents association of the school where the boy was studying have now issued an anti-bullying policy. Friends and family of the student have suggested that bullying was not the cause of his death and request that he be laid to rest in peace. Whether cyberbullying was the issue or not in this case, incidents of bullying do appear to be causing increasing alarm across schools in Spain. A number of cases have now been recorded in the Alicante Province with denuncias being made and investigations taking place.

In September six young people were denounced for bullying a thirteen year old boy for his height, weight and even haircut. The boy is a haemophiliac and the group picked on his disability to the extent that some members were suspended from the school. In October nine young people were detained in Alicante for their part in the bullying of a fellow student.

Congratulations to the RBL Congratulations to the Orihuela Costa and District Branch for once again surpassing all expectations with their Poppy Appeal and collecting an incredible sum! From small beginnings only 9 years ago, when the branch was first formed, and supporters collected a little over 6,000, the amount has

increased year on year, thanks to the hard work and dedication of its enthusiastic members. In announcing the final total, Poppy Appeal coordinator Eddie Coleman thanked the many individuals who had provided their magnificent support to this amazing cause.

Currently the incidents seem to be linked mostly to older students during their final years of school. The bullying includes online attacks as well sometimes as direct challenges in the classroom. An issue that schools are being asked to address as a matter of urgency. Suzanne O’Connell

It’s been reported that the town hall of Almoradí has spent €10,000 on the purchase of 24 chairs for their council chambers and the offices of the mayor. The purchase of the chairs, valued at €400 each, has become a contentious issues for those parties in opposition to the PP and Ciudadanos who have made the spending decision. It is claimed that not only is the expense of the chairs not needed but they were bought from a supplier outside the town itself. Almoradí and the surrounding area is known for an abundance of furniture suppliers. The IU (IzquierdaUnida) who have raised the complaint have asked if this is really what the town most needs now. The new seats will replace the existing

ones and include wheels and armrests. It is being claimed that the contract was issued directly and that little publicity was given prior to the decision with no opportunity for other furniture establishments to make a bid for the business. Further complaints were made that the town hall was being well furnished when requests for furniture for local schools were not seen as such a priority. The council claims that the new chairs have been purchased due to the increasing size of the council. From 2019 the town hall will consist of 21 councillors instead of the current 17. This is due to the growth of the town which now has 20,000 inhabitants. The increase in size means that it will be difficult to accommodate all the councillors in the chamber as the existing chairs are too big and heavy and new, lighter chairs were needed. The councillor responsible for their purchase claims that she did not personally choose the chairs but that they were chosen by an auditor and that she only signed for them. It’s claimed that they are not the top of the range model but mid range and are expected to last for many years. They were purchased from a company that has been used previously and one from outside the town because there isn’t a company in the town who are dedicated to office furniture. Suzanne O’Connell

‘Kidnapper’ demands money panto, this comedy play is more suitable for adult audiences. If you are looking for an evening of laughter then "Cinder-Hella" could just be the tonic to brighten up a February evening.

Virtual kidnappers based in Brazil pretended to have kidnapped five of a 72 year-old woman’s relatives. The Guardia Civil in Torrevieja were informed of the extortion attempt by the woman’s friend living in Guardamar. The 60 year-old friend

was video calling the woman when she received a call on her mobile to say that her daughter, son-in-law and three granddaughters, all living in Brazil, had been kidnapped. The criminals demanded a ransom of 7,000 reales which

Spreading the Christmas cheer On Friday 8th and Saturday 9th December Age Concern were at the Overseas Supermarket in San Fulgencio selling raffle tickets. The first prize was a large hamper containing all kinds of goodies including a few bottles too. The second prize was another, slightly smaller hamper and the third prize was a voucher to the value of €25 which had been donated by the supermarket. It was a profitable collection with shoppers choosing not only to buy the raffle tickets but to give money too. Altogether €662 was raised which will go towards maintaining the many services and mobility aids that Age Concern offer. The first prize winners were Pat Humphrey and Cindy Parker from Quesada. Pauline Land from La Marina was the second prize winner and Adam was the lucky recipient of the voucher. Many volunteers from Age Concern willingly gave their time to meet and greet people in the supermarket over the two-day period. President of Age Concern, Maureen

Payne, was delighted with the response of the shoppers and the efforts of the volunteers. It’s likely that this fundraising event will be repeated in 2018. Suzanne O’Connell

has a value of about €2,000. The man alerted the Guardia Civil and reported what had happened as he had listened to the whole of the conversation between the woman and the false kidnappers. Due to the seriousness of the extortion, the police went to her friend’s home and concocted a plan to find out more information about the kidnappers. When the kidnappers next contacted the woman the police passed her written notes asking her to put forward specific questions to the suspects. The woman was kept on the phone for 11 hours and they managed to gain information during that time about her bank account whilst threatening to harm her family. They told the woman that they were monitoring her phone line and other communication devices in the home to make sure that she wasn’t contacting the police. The kidnappers took it in turns to harass her, including one of them pretending to be one of her relatives. The kidnappers were quite knowledgeable about the crime they were committing, making sure that the demand was kept below the 10,000 reales that would trigger an alert. The Guardia Civil linked in with members of the force stationed in The Spanish Embassy in Brazil. They mediated between the Brazilian and Spanish police authorities, sharing all the information extracted by the police. The Guardia based in Brazil were able to confirm that the family were safe and that this was a case of virtual kidnapping. This crime is becoming more common in South American countries and isnow under further investigation. Suzanne O’Connell

Festive boost for the Tasha Appeal Two festive charity events took place over the weekend outside Orihuela Costa Town Hall. On Saturday there was a Charity Party organised by the Town Hall aimed at International residents and their Associations. There was representation from many charities including HELP at Home CB and the Orihuela Costa Community Care Group but most of the on stage activities were provided by groups from Eastern Europe with the dancers, especially the children, presenting routines that were so well executed, they would put some of the ‘Strictly’ team to shame. There was a steady throughput of visitors all afternoon and having now got the flavour with this very first Christmas event, many would expect the organisers to build on what they achieved on Saturday, hopefully more involvement from British and Irish expats, when they hold the event again in 2018. On Sunday the Orihuela Costa Community Care Group were out again, but this time in support of their final Tasha Appeal of the year, a Christmas Craft Fair.

Tasha herself was unfortunately too ill to attend but her father Andy was joined by three friends in cycling the 30 km from La Marina to the charity venue in Playa Flamenca. Andy was joined on the ride by Kevin Barnes from La Marina, John Clarke of Sapphire Properties and Richard Cavendish from Blue Moon Solutions. Together, they raised €1800. Stevie Spit hosted the day’s live entertainment, with Melissa Jade Williams, Cindy Fitzpatrick, The Honey’s Duo, both former members of TAABS, and Paris with her Essence Dancers, all providing their time for free. The event was organised by Norah and Penny of the Orihuela Costa Community Care Association. If you would like to make a donation to the Tasha Appeal you can do so be searching for Tasha’s page at the Gofundme website or you can drop it in to the Celtic Isle every Saturday. Alternatively, volunteers will be collecting for Tasha in the main square of La Zenia Boulevard in the run up to

Christmas. Penny of Alfonsos restaurant in Playa Flamenca is urgently seeking volunteers to help with the collection. Volunteers would be needed for around three hours at a time as the management of Zenia Boulevard have kindly agreed to let Orihuela Costa Community Care Association hold a number of live music events for the Tasha Appeal. If you think you can spare a few hours to volunteer at Zenia Boulevard, please call Penny on: 688 284 040.

Christmas dinner for Torrevieja’s classic car club The Torrevieja Classics and Specialist Car Club celebrated its annual Christmas dinner on Sunday 10th December at the El Rancho Restaurant near Los Montesinos. It was a beautiful afternoon and the diners felt welcome as they were greeted with complimentary Cava and canapés around the pool bar. The meal consisted of three courses with a choice of steak, ribs, chicken or salmon and, of course, accompanied by wine. Rickie

C provided the entertainment and many members of the club took to the dance floor. After the meal the secretary of the club, John Wallis, presented Uta Kustner with an orchid in thanks for all the translation work she has done for them over the year. Overall, it was a very pleasant afternoon and one that they would like to repeat. The next rally will now be on December 28th and there will be a driving skills competition, crazy golf and a dinner. If you

are interested in cars/ rallies and social events, and particularly if you have your own classic car, then please contact Club Torrevieja by visiting their website www.CarClubTorrevieja.com or by telephoning 966 773 364. You can also come along to one of their monthly meetings on the first Wednesday of the month at 7.30pm in the Marina Club café in the International Marina. Suzanne O’Connell

The continued neglect of Rabaloche It isn’t only parts of Torrevieja and the urbanisations populated by foreigners that can feel they are sometimes ignored by councillors. The neighbourhood of Rabaloche in Orihuela has a reputation for being neglected and complains that it’s the last place to receive funding and upkeep in the Orihuela ‘to do’ list. Once more its inhabitants, and those who act on their behalf, are complaining that it has been abandoned by the local council. The paper ‘Informacion’ was asked to come and see for themselves the poor state of the streets and general environment in this part of the town. Holes in the

road, uneven road surfaces and chickens running around the streets are all features of this disadvantaged area. Neighbours complain that even when they report problems with the main roads no action is taken and even 10 months after the protests have been made there is still no response by councillors. ‘We pay the same taxes as those who live in la Glorieta and Los Andenes,’ explains a spokesman for the area, ‘ but we

don’t receive the same services as they do. They turn a deaf ear and following our meeting on February 24th we are still waiting for action to be taken.’ There is accumulated rubbish on the pavement and rubble that’s waiting to be removed. A situation that is not uncommon in Orihuela Costa too. Emergency vehicles have difficulty getting through the streets and residents are worried about what would happen if there was a fire. The barrio is located on the side of the mountain with narrow streets and the hens, that live on the mountain side, roam freely. It’s like a village from another century. It’s a difficult place to live for young people too. Drugs are a problem here and those who report the drug problem are threatened by the traffickers. What particularly concerns the neighbours is that drug use is not only common but takes place openly in broad daylight and in front of young children. The area is not remote, however. It is close to the historic centre of the town, a stone’s throw from the monuments and historic centre that attracts thousands of tourists every year. They may be surprised to realise that so close to these great attractions people live in poverty and houses are increasingly broken into and illegally occupied. There is an occasional police drive to rid the area of its criminals but it only sees more returning. This area, along with others in the Costa Blanca, is in desperate need of regeneration in some form but even some interest from councillors would go a long way too. Suzanne O’Connell

WEEKLY EURO UPDATE After enjoying the after effects of an agreement on the Brexit divorce bill last week, the pound found itself on shakier ground this week. David Davis’ comments that the deal would be “Canada plus plus plus,” was immediately contradicted by the EU. Inflation was reported at 3.1%, requiring the Bank of England governor to write to the chancellor. Later in the week, parliament took back control of the Brexit process when it voted narrowly in favour of an amendment that will give it the final say in approving Downing Street's deal with the EU. Although this adds a further layer of potential uncertainty, investors eventually decided it was a positive outcome for sterling, which was an average of 0.2% higher on the day. This is likely to be because they were relieved that it was more likely to result in closer future involvement with the single market. Investors have never been keen on the prospect of Britain "crashing out" of its relationship with Europe and they saw yesterday evening's vote as diminishing that prospect. The euro had a more positive and straightforward week. The European Central Bank (ECB) has lifted its economic growth forecasts as growth across the eurozone picks up. It now expects the eurozone's economy to grow 2.4% this year, ahead of its previous guidance of 2.2%. The bank also kept its main interest rate at zero and confirmed its asset purchase programme would drop from €60bn to €30bn a month in January. The bank also raised its GDP growth forecast for next year to 2.3% from 1.8%, and for 2019 to 1.9% from 1.7%. More drama was to be found across the Atlantic. Last week concluded with a positive employment report - figures the monthly increase of 228k in nonfarm payrolls meant 31k more jobs than predicted. But earnings fell short of forecast, rising by an annual 2.5% instead of 2.7%. The Republicans met with defeat at the polls this week which cast a shadow of doubt on the proposed tax bill. Voters in Alabama delivered an

unexpected blow to Donald Trump last when they rejected his senatorial candidate, picking instead a Democrat for the first time in a quarter of a century. The result damaged the Republicans' Senate majority and, with it, the dollar. It will leave the ruling party with 5149 majority in the Senate, potentially hindering the passage of the president's tax cuts and any other legislation he might propose. The dollar weakened when the US data showed headline inflation rising to 2.2% while core inflation slowed to1.7%. Janet Yellen made what could be her final public appearance as chairperson of the US Federal Reserve. She held a press conference to discuss the Fed's almost universallyexpected decision to increase the Funds rate and issued a note of caution that the proposed "giant" tax cuts will increase the national debt without providing "a gigantic increase" in growth. The Canadian dollar received a shot in the arm after Bank of Canada governor Stephen Poloz said the central bank is growing “increasingly confident” that the economy will need less stimulus over time. The loonie had its best day in two weeks after the remarks, rising 0.8% against the US dollar. Poloz believes the Bank of Canada will continue with its cautious approach, but confirmed that the Canadian economy had made “tremendous progress.” and is approaching full potential. More optimism was found down under, where the Australian dollar benefited from stronger-thanexpected employment data and investors responded positively to the appointment of Adrian Orr, the CEO of the NZ Superannuation Fund, as governor of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand. The nomination has reassured investors that the new Labour government in Wellington will pursue a fairly conventional economic policy. Mr Orr is a classically-trained economist with previous experience at the RBNZ and will take up his post in March 2018.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Dear Editor I recently went to the Panto "Cinderella" presented by The ADAPT theatre group In San Pedro del Pinatar and thoroughly enjoyed the evening, but one line from the panto really struck a chord, the Town crier was to announce The Palace Ball but cried out in jubilation “Orihuela Costa to announce Independence from Orihuela City” Which nearly brought the house down with cheers and clapping in agreement, the Town Crier went on to say “Oh that's next week’s news” then announced the Palace Ball”. Was this in jest? Well with Orihuela City having to cancel the Pink Ladies Annual Santa Parade and the Tasha appeal street market at the last moment after months of planning and advertising Due to the “lack of Police!!! How can the residence of Orihuela Costa sleep comfortably in their beds at night, NOT ENOUGH police is this a ticket for the criminal element to run riot on the Costa. Isn't it time to say enough is enough and take control of our own destiny and part with our "Panto" Governors in real life. Then we might

have some say in, Things like, Building control, clean streets and environment, a proper functioning police/ambulance/fire service and when this is done somewhere to bury our dead and somewhere hold our own PANTOMIME with proper facilities. So come on you local Politicians lets have what the residence are calling for our own Brexit or Costa Exit. T.J.Sawkins Resident in Playa Flamenca. Dear Editor Just what is Deputy Lord Mayor Fanny Serranno's agenda. After closing down the three beach bars at Punta Prima plus banning live music and karaoke from other bars in the area, she has now closed down the Torrevieja fairground. I now see that she is in the UK boosting Torrevieja as a holiday venue. As a ten year resident of Punta prima, I used the beach bars often and they would bring in people of all ages and nationalities to hear the music. There was never any trouble and the music wasn't loud. The bars were creating jobs for the local area and putting lots of money

in to the local economy. I have spoken to so many holiday makers who asked me why the beach bars were not open and lots of them told me that the reason that they come to Torrevieja is because of the entertainment on the beach during the day and in the restaurants and bars in the evenings. Many said they would not return if the entertainment was stopped. So how does Fanny Serrano intend to boost tourism? It would be interesting to hear what she has in mind. Her name is appearing in the local papers constantly and she is fast gaining a name for herself but not in a good way. Will she be known as the person who decreased tourism. Regards Alan Cawthorne Dear Ms Toddington In last week's Costa Blanca People you reported that Nigel Farage had been branded a hypocrite. I'm just writing to say that I think it is altogether reasonable and a Good Thing that Mr Farage will take the pension he has earned so well in representing the British people in the European Parliament. AND of course,

it will get back a tiny piece of the squillions of pounds the British taxpayer has donated to the largely undemocratic EU. People who do not like the company they work for still do - always - take the pension they are entitled to. Mr Farage should not be expected to be any different. I hope you can find a quote from a politician who has pointed that out. Yours faithfully Penelope Taylor Dear Sirs. We are a group of Padel Tenis players. We play every Wednesday and Friday at the Sports Centre in Torrevieja where there are seven Padel courts. Three of these courts have not been available for hire for six months due to minor faults. It’s a disgrace that a facility so magnificent seems devoid of maintenance. We respectfully ask the council to attend to the repair of theses courts as soon as possible. Name supplied. Dear Editor HELP Murcia Mar Menor would like to send greetings for this Christmas and

best wishes for 2018 to all the people who have once again supported our Charity during 2017. It´s thanks to all of you who have donated goods and to the efforts of all our volunteers and members that we have once again been able to support the needy of the Murcia region during 2017.

Winter is a great time to build a rockery, for one reason if no other it is heavy work, and heavy work is better done when the weather is cool.

Why grow plants amongst rocks? • Rocks, and the mosses and lichens that grow on rock surfaces, provide a variety of interesting textures and colours in the garden. • Rocks can be used to visually separate pockets of plants. • On sloping ground, rocks prevent the soil washing away from plant roots. • Rocks help to suppress weeds growing amongst the plants. • Rocks help to insulate plant roots (roots find cooler and moister soil under the rocks).

Where to build a rockery A sunny, well-drained spot is best. The most obvious place to build a rockery is on a slope or a mound in an attempt to imitate nature. To achieve this effect, seek inspiration from nature, then try to imitate what you see. To ensure that the rocks are safe and secure, at least half, and preferably twothirds of the rock should be buried in the ground. On flat ground, a rockery provides a sense of visual relief, but care is needed to blend it into the garden. They work well in natural style settings such as behind ponds or adjacent to water courses, but can also look good built against a wall or in small odd-shaped corners of the garden. Another possibility is to build a rock wall with planting pockets in it: 1. Create a solid foundation - either dig a trench down to solid sub-soil, or if the wall is high and heavy, dig a trench and pour a concrete foundation below ground level. 2. Build the first layer of rock and then pack a good quality loam behind the rock. 3. Leaving the odd pocket exposed to plant in, add the next layer of rock - with the face slightly behind the first layer

(so the wall has a slope backwards). 4. Pack soil behind the second layer. 5. Continue with further layers leaving pockets for planting as you go, and being careful to retain the slope backwards. 6. Plant the pockets of exposed soil as soon as you are finished - the plants need to start growing ASAP so as to hold the soil in place.

What type of rock? Once you have chosen the site for your rockery you must then choose the appropriate type of rock: Sandstone, granite, volcanic rock, etc. Imitation rocks are also available from some garden centres. Most people favour natural shaped rocks, but cut blocks can also be used to create interesting rockery effects. Regardless of type, the sizes of the individual rocks will need to be in scale with the overall project.

Moving rocks If the rocks you use are very large and heavy, you will need to be smart in the way you handle them. The quickest method is to hire a machine (such as a small loader/tractor) for a day. Be careful though - rough handling can scratch the surface of the rock and destroy its natural appearance. Medium to large rocks can be moved by hand with the help of friends, a wheelbarrow, or a trolley. If you lift heavy rocks, make sure you lift correctly: Straight back, bended knees – let your legs, not your back, do the lifting. Rockeries can be made to fit any space available. If you do not have the room for a large rockery, you can create a good result with the creative use of shrubs and just a few strategically placed rocks. Have fun!

WELCOME TO FUERTEVENTURA with Vivalia Travel

Arrive and discover a pristine coastline with emerald green waters and over 150 km of white sand beaches. You’re in paradise and bathed in sunshine and relaxing negative ions from the sea breeze. The coast and the spectacular volcanic landscapes are why the island is a Biosphere Reserve. Close your eyes and when you open them you’re a new person. A perfect moment to grab a

board and hit the clear water. Or to explore the island’s cuisine in its villages. Try the fresh fish, wrinkly potatoes and the Designation of Origin cheeses. Fuerteventura lies just 100km from the African coast and there are striking similarities not only with the landscape, but also the houses, with their North African-style flat roofs for collecting rainfall. In other ways, Fuerteventura

emulates its neighbour Lanzarote, only with more colours. Its volcanoes resemble piles of saffron, chilli and coriander, surreal triangles of exotic spices. Most visitors, however, are more interested in mastering the waves and the wind than contemplating the abstract aesthetics of the scenery. The second-largest island in the archipelago (after Tenerife), Fuerteventura has year-round

sunshine and the biggest and best beaches in the Canaries. The main tourist resorts lie at opposite ends of the island. At the northern tip is Coralejo, beloved by British sun-seekers. While deep down south lies Morro Jable, largely frequented

by Germans and a markedly staider place. The island was declared a Unesco Biosphere Reserve in 2009. Discover the Canary Islands, travelling with us on an All Inclusive Cruise departing Feb

I can’t face it this year

www.costablancapeople.com

She does it on purpose My nasty mother-in-law likes to humiliate me and last year gave me a Christmas present of a slimming book and a pot of anti-cellulite cream! We all sat there opening our gifts and it was obvious she was enjoying every minute. Her own daughter got a really nice outfit that she’d asked for. I am definitely being singled out. Her other daughter-in-law got some nice smellies. She and I get on quite well, and even she admitted my gift was pointed. Is there anything I can do?

Last year I hosted Christmas for my horrible family, and, as predicted it was a disaster. None of us really like each other and we only still get together for the sake of our elderly parents. I bent over backwards preparing the meal and trying to make everything nice, only for my stuck up cousin to sit there sneering at everything that was put in front of her. My brothers got drunk and ended up breaking a lamp that I’d had for years - no word of an apology. And my teenage nephew did nothing but complain about every present he unwrapped. The only one that seemed to enjoy it was the dog who got in to the kitchen and ate everyone’s first course of pate before I could even serve it.

In the past I’ve suggested a policy of only buying for the children. I wouldn’t normally advise fighting back, but you could try at beating her at her own game and buy her something equally insulting, but then it can turn an already fragile situation in to a war. You could shame her and buy her a donation to a charity. That’s always a good one if you want something to fall flat. Otherwise, don’t open her present at the time and leave it behind when you leave. It would seem like she gets enjoyment out of showing you up in front of everyone.

Oh dear. No wonder you don’t want to host another party. Leave it to someone else this year, or suggest that you all go to a restaurant instead. Or, escape Christmas and the family altogether and book a holiday or break. WRITE TO SARA IN CONFIDENCE. A PSEUDONYM WILL BE USED IF YOU WISH. SARA READS ALL LETTERS AND CAN GIVE A PERSONAL REPLY. A total of 840 euros was raised, and this was spent on Christmas food boxes, which were handed over to Lourdes Lopez Tajes, Councillor for Social Services, for distribution to families and elderly folk who are struggling over the Festive period. Diners were entertained by the very

talented and versatile Johnny Scott, who not only played for a reduced fee, but having won 100 euros on the football scratch card, then donated his winnings to the night’s funds. Next month’s Charity night will be on Wednesday, 24th January, with Woody, who is always a sell out. Tickets are available from the Restaurant; Post Room Benijofar; Card Place in Benimar and REDZ cafe bar in Quesada. Price is just 10 euros for great food and excellent entertainment.

Hospital Quirónsalud Torrevieja’s solidarity Christmas campaign 2017 called The Christmas Charity Quirónsalud Project 2017, finished on Wednesday 13th December, at 18.00 in the main entrance of the Hospital. The British International Christian Assembly choir (ICA) gave a concert putting a finishing touch to the campaign. The solidarity campaign took place from the 1st to 13th December and consisted of collecting toys and Christmas cakes and pastries in benefit of Alimentos Solidarios and Caritas of Torrevieja. The Association of estate agencies from the Vega Baja (ASIVEGA) collaborated by giving a donation of 500 euros for both charities; and more than fifty other associations of foreign residents in the area also took part. The campaign has been present on social media with the hashtag #Xmas4all and, under the motto Join Hospital Quirónsalud Torrevieja’s Solidarity Campaign, the toys or Christmas cakes and pastries were left at the information point located at the hospital’s main entrance.

AGE CONCERN CHRISTMAS LUNCH Bar Carmen’s was the venue for the Age Concern Christmas lunch on Tuesday 12th December. Thirty four beneficiaries of Age Concern were really in the Christmas Spirit and ready to enjoy the party. The Rascals came along too dressed in their bright red outfits and Santa hats. They entertained the diners, singing carols to make a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon. To finish the afternoon off everyone went home with a raffle prize too. Anyone over the age of 50 can become a member of Age Concern. If you feel you need a new circle of friends and a shake up of your social life why not make a New Year’s resolution and come along to the Age Concern centre at Calle Paganini in La Siesta. You can come along any morning except for Saturday and Sunday and find out how Age Concern can enhance your experience of living in Spain. Whilst you’re there you can relax and enjoy a nice cup of tea too. Suzanne O’Connell

SAFE SOCIALISING: Going out, having fun and staying safe

Some vital tips from the Costa Blanca People on staying safe while socialising. Weekends (and even weekdays!) here on the Costa Blanca can be festive affairs with parties, drinks and clubbing the top of many of our social agendas – especially at this time of the year. We all like to let our hair down but this can have disastrous consequences if we allow ourselves to become vulnerable by our behaviour. This week, the Costa Blanca People offers some important information on staying safe while out at night. Plan ahead Before you even leave the house, make sure you have a plan which includes where you are going, who you are going with and importantly, how you plan on getting home. If you are going on a date with someone new, or socialising outside of your usual group of friends, try to find a friend who will be staying in for the evening (and therefore not drinking) and keep them up to date on your whereabouts and sobriety. Text message or whatsapp is probably the simplest way to do this. Letting others know your plans is absolutely key to staying safe while you are out. Know your limits – use your head Before you go out for a drink, make decisions about how much alcohol you can drink and still remain in control of a situation. This way, you can avoid making bad judgements while you are out. The world often seems a friendlier place when you’ve had a few drinks but the reality is that you can become an easy target the drunker you become. Use your head – avoid drinks which look like they have been tampered with. Never leave

your open drink unattended on a table or a bar – even if you are simply dancing nearby. Never accept drinks or drugs from strangers. If you know not to do something while you are sober, avoid doing it while you are drunk. Drink aware Be aware of your drink at all times. Don’t leave it unattended. Although it isn’t an everyday occurrence, there have been times when drinks are spiked. This means that drugs are surreptitiously placed into someone’s drink, usually with the intention of sexually assaulting the person once the drugs kick in. If you think you have had your drink spiked, alert a trusted friend or the bar staff immediately. You may also need medical attention – acting fast is in your interest. Stick together Going out in a group is great fun. Staying with that group is important for your safety. Stay in touch with your friends throughout the night and if, at any time, you want to leave – make sure that everyone knows you are leaving and how they can reach you. Watch out If you are using a cash machine, be aware of your surroundings. If you feel someone is watching you, walk away and come back later. Never reveal your PIN number and try to be discreet when you are putting your money away. No matter where you are, if you see suspicious characters lurking on a corner, or in a car, take steps to protect yourself – have your mobile phone out, at the ready; walk on the other side of the street; be aware of where you are (are you approaching a

laneway/dead end; are there houses/shops nearby where you could seek help if necessary, etc) If you have a personal alarm, bring it with you. Ensure it has batteries and be prepared to use it. Getting home safely Getting home can be the most complicated part of the night out. If you’ve been drinking, you can’t drive. Walking alone isn’t a sensible option either. There are a number of options; you can arrange for a designated driver, you can book a taxi or you can arrange for a family member to collect you. There are a number of unlicensed taxis doing“runs”in the area. We don’t recommend you use these as you’re probably not properly insured and if anything were to happen on your journey, there is no way of tracing the so called taxi or its driver. If you are walking home in a group, remember basic road safety – especially around the busy N-332. In urban areas, avoid shortcuts or badly lit streets where you’ll be more vulnerable. Remember – just one bad decision can change the course of your evening, or your life, forever. More about spiked drinks If you start to feel out of control, sick, very sleepy, lose consciousness or feel dizzy then stay with friends and ask them to keep an eye on you. What is a spiked drink? • If alcohol or a drug is put in your drink without you knowing, then it’s a spiked drink. • It will probably make you drunk or drugged without you realising why. • You might pass out, not be able to defend yourself or black out and not

remember what happened. • The most common drug to be used in drink spiking is alcohol although prescription and illegal drugs can be used. • Drugs used to assault someone can be colourless, tasteless and without a smell. • Someone might spike your drink as a joke or when planning to attack or sexually assault you. Drug rape Drug rape isn't all that common but it IS a risk. Drug rape or assault can happen when somebody deliberately spikes your drink or if they take advantage of you when you’re already drunk or drugged up. Young people are the most common victims of drug rape and both men and women are at risk from this sort of attack. You can be drug raped in bars, nightclubs, parties, social events, on holiday and even at someone’s house. If you have been sexually abused or raped: • Tell someone you trust. • If you’ve been assaulted or raped (or think you might have been) then report it to the police immediately. Don’t worry if you were drunk or taking drugs, the assault is much more serious. • Reporting a crime means you’ll be asked a lot of detailed questions and should carefully read through your statement when it’s finished to make sure there are no mistakes. Bring a translator if your Spanish isn’t up to scratch. • Remember that it’s never your fault, even if you feel guilty. • If you think you’ve been drug raped ask for a medical examination or urine sample to be taken so they can check for traces of the drug.

A fifth of Spaniards would work from home if they could According to the latest report by What Workers Want, 21 per cent of Spanish employees would choose to work from home if they were given the possibility to do so by their employers, although this percentage drops dramatically to only 5 per cent of the baby boomer generations born in the 1940s and 1960s. During the presentation of the report, drawn up by the Association of Spanish Offices (AEO) and the estate agency consultancy Savills, the latter’s director of Space Consultancy & Fit Out, Delia Fernández, underlined the importance that Spaniards give to the social aspect of their work, their ability to interact with colleagues. Eighty-four per cent of those interviewed preferred to have their own dedicated workspace, rather than team work zones (69 per cent) or common spaces (68 per cent). 83 per cent said they did not have their own office and

73 per cent said they would not be more productive if they did have one. The study, involving the analysis of interviews of 740 participants carried out over the course of more than two years in Madrid and Barcelona, revealed that almost 70 per cent of employees were proud of their jobs and their workplace, a sentiment that was particularly notice-able amongst the millennials (those born from the 1980s onwards). This satisfaction is derived primarily from the proximity and accessibility of their workplace, followed by other factors like convenience, the quality of the wifi connection, the spaciousness and the security, which were all considered to have an impact on the ideal job. Office design was the one major shortcoming highlighted by 69 per cent of employees interviews, especially by the millennials, who would prefer a

more modern and technological workplace. 67.5 per cent said this type of workplace would increase their productivity. The report, which Experis, Espacio Aretha, Merlin Properties and Steelcase all helped to compile, showed that people in Madrid take an average of 36 minutes to get to work, compared with the average of 30 minutes in Barcelona and the 42+ minutes in Paris. The car is the most popular mode of transport for commuters in Madrid, with 53 per cent choosing this option, followed by the metro or train (44 per cent), the bus (20 per cent) or motorbike (13 per cent). In Barcelona, 12 per cent of those interviewed said they chose to cycle to work, compared with only 3% of those in Madrid, probably because of the morphology of the city itself, concluded Fernández.

Record summer for Spanish property reported With record numbers of tourists visiting to Spain this summer, international property investment also continues to thrive. According to the latest research from property consultants JLL, total investment this year so far has almost overtaken the amount ploughed into Spanish real estate for all of 2016. In fact, the market looks to exceed this total in the future as experts are predicting a further rise in the number of tourists visiting Spain. According to reports from the third Mediterranean Resort & Hotel Estate Forum, the Mediterranean region will receive 420 million tourists by 2020 with Spain being the most popular tourism destination. In terms of when sales of Spanish properties have risen in 2017, it’s no surprise to see a marked increase in sales during August - the height of the

summer holiday season. Latest figures from the National Institute of Statistics (INE) reveal Spanish homes sales were up to 17% this August compared to the same period last year. In line with INE figures, Spain’s leading housebuilder Taylor Wimpey España also saw an increase in reservations for properties over the summer. The company’s latest report reveals the highest number of reservations taken between June to September in the last six years with enquiries up 13% compared to the same period in 2016. “The latest INE data confirms our confidence in Spain's real estate market and we believe that this growing interest in Spanish property will continue throughout 2018. This summer has been very positive for us with the market attracting a wide range of buyers and we see no signs of this slowing over the coming winter

months,” said Marc Pritchard, Sales and Marketing Director, Taylor Wimpey España. After a period of uncertainty, buyers in the UK wanting to relocate or invest in a home abroad are flocking to Spain once again in significant numbers with British reservations for Taylor Wimpey Espana’s properties up 92% alone compared to last summer. The Costa Blanca is the area that has seen the most growth this year with buyers from more than 20 different international markets. Indeed, as Spain’s property market has recovered, it is now appealing to a wider group of buyers and whilst Britons are the most significant buyers, they are now competing with those from Scandinavia, Russia, Belgium and other North European countries.

When is the best time to sell your home? Rebecca Serwotka

Your favourite local property expert, of Inmobiliaria Real Estate Agents in Ciudad Quesada & published author of “Moving Forward – 25 Essential Rules For Buying & Selling Real Estate Without Going Crazy.” Request your FREE copy today! Christmas is here and you’re contemplating whether to sell your home now, or wait until the Spring. There is never a good or bad time to sell your property. If it’s priced right, it will sell. Not everyone celebrates the same holidays and it’s those serious buyers that are still out there on the lookout for that special home. However, waiting until Spring can be a bad idea, but that just depends on how serious you are about selling. If you are ready to make the move, then listing

your property for sale during the Winter, is a great idea as most homeowners think that Spring is best, which means that you won’t be competing with many houses on the market for sale! Most people assume that Spring is a better time to sell, but that time of year you’ll have a lot more competition around, allowing the buyers to be more selective. So if during this holiday season, you think it’s time for moving up or moving down, don’t wait for the “holiday homeowners” to return, beat them to it and list your property for sale today! Remember, you’ll be competing with fewer homes on the market! ‘On yer bike’ with Poppy Golf

HELP ladies knit for the Red Cross

A terrific amount was raised toward the Poppy Appeal by the raffle for the electric GTech bike that was donated by keen cyclist Sharron Mather and her husband Ken. The final amount, which was announced last week by organiser Mick ‘the Grip’ Reeves, was 1,890 euro. Thank you so much to all those who participated. The money really will be put to good use. The winning ticket was draw by Sharron at the Clubhouse Restaurant, Vistabella Golf, with proprietor Robin Parkes acting as the adjudicator. The winner of the bike was Doug House from Bar UK in Torre de la Horadada with the consolation prize, of four Vistabella green fees and buggies, won by Simon Lee from The Plaza Golf Society based at The Ale House in Villamartin Plaza. Unfortunately Doug couldn’t attend the prize giving so Lynn accepted the bike outside the Bar UK last week. Once again, grateful thanks for all the money raised and to all who helped in making the final total so successful.

The ladies of HELP Murcia Mar Menor have been busy over the last few months knitting squares in their spare time to make up these wonderful, warm and colourful blankets, which on Wednesday 7th December were donated to the Red Cross in San Pedro del Pinatar. Annie Heatherington, who had the original idea to start knitting to help people in need in the Murcia Region, handed over all the items so far finished to Jave Cortez the President of the Red Cross Mar Menor North, who together with Vice President Genaro Cortez Anguilo and Food Coordinator Jaime Tornel were delighted to receive them on behalf of those who are in need of some warmth in the Murcia Region now that the cold weather has arrived.

Pictured are Tricia Brister, Annie Heatherington, and Barbara Scott who together with Pam Clough, Jane Kerr, Betty O’Neil and Christine Baillie of HELP and many more friends of HELP have not only knitted these blankets, both full size and baby size but have also knitted baby clothes and have donated all the wool used. Annie stated that this is going to be an ongoing project and she is hoping to get more people involved. If anyone wants to help or would like patterns they can be had at the HELP Outlet or the HELP Office in Los Alcazares. The HELP Outlet and HELP weekly Car Boot sale have also been collecting baby clothing over the past few months which has been donated to the Red Cross. For more information call 968 570 059.

one of its twice weekly sessions which, as usual, was well attended. Monday was the last monthly meeting this year of the U3A and was held at the its normal venue the CMO building where, despite the lack of refreshments due to the ongoing closure of the cafeteria, members brought along their own drinks and food to eat whilst they were entertained by the Singing for Pleasure group. They were treated to songs old and new and a short selection of carols. There was also an amusing rendition of the old favourite Henry and Liza song “There’s a Hole in my Bucket” enacted by a couple of brave U3A members who will remain anonymous to protect them!

Busy week at U3A Torrevieja U3A members have just completed a very busy week. Amongst many other activities that were on offer, about 120 members attended the Quesada Golf Club for a Christmas feast including refreshment, which went down very well, as usual. Friday saw the Easy Walkers taking a trip around the Sucina area where they were allowed to briefly visit a local farm that was host to some newly arrived lambs. Considering the time of year, and despite strenuous searching, they did not come across any wise men or camels. POLLUTION IS CHOKING SPAIN’S CITIES Pollution is choking Spain’s main cities, a situation that is being exacerbated by atmospheric stability and a lack of rain. In the few weeks to a month alone, eighteen cities exceeded European Union limits for nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and particulate matter (PM10), according to the green group Ecologists in Action. “The limits are being breached in many cities and no one is doing anything about it,” warns Juan Bárcena, who is in charge of air quality issues at Ecologists in Action. Madrid The capital has had pollution issues for years. An almost permanent halo of smog hovers over the city. Once again, Madrid City Hall is taking steps to try to alleviate the situation, one of just two cities in Spain to do so. In November, officials activated the level 2 scenario of its anti-pollution protocol, banning non-residents from parking in regulated parking zones (SER),

as well as adjusting the speed limit on the M-30 beltway and other access roads to 70 km per hour. Madrid spews more nitrogen dioxide into the air on an hourly basis than any other Spanish city, reaching a maximum of 341 μg /m3 at one monitoring station between 15 November and 19 November. This is 141 μg /m3 over the limit. In the same period, it also exceeded the EU limit on PM10 particles. Just last week, 11 monitoring stations were over the daily nitrogen dioxide limit on 32 occasions, according to official city statistics.

Barcelona The Catalan capital exceeded the nitrogen dioxide limit at the Gràcia monitoring station on November 17. Since then, the main problem has been the density of PM10 particles, according to local authorities. The worst levels were registered towards the end of November, when the

Eixample monitoring station shot up to 55 μg /m3 of PM10. Over the last few weeks, Barcelona has not placed any restrictions on traffic, despite the pollution being visible on November 17 and 22. However, the city has plans to restrict vehicle numbers from 1 December in the event of excess air pollution.

levels of air quality at the end of November at three monitoring stations. Like Madrid, Barcelona and Zaragoza, its problems were with NO2 and PM10. The city has not taken any measures to counter the pollution, though Seville does have the biggest network of bicycle paths in Spain.

Zaragoza The capital of Aragon has exceeded both NO2 and PM10 limits. Though it has traditionally been recognized for its air quality, it has also suffered from a lack of rain in the last few months. Over the last week, the situation has grown worse and City Hall had announced it will adopt a course of action to deal with such episodes in the future as part of their plan for sustainable mobility.

Valencia Although Valencia has managed to keep down its hourly nitrogen dioxide levels over the last few weeks, it did register the second biggest concentration of PM10 in Spain at one monitoring station between 15 and 19 November. At the end of November the city adopted measures that merely inform and advise residents on issues such as avoiding intense exercise outdoors. Ecologists in Action has criticised the authorities in Valencia for not activating the protocol earlier.

Valladolid Like Valencia, Valladolid has maintained hourly NO2 levels below the permitted threshold while its PM10 levels breached the daily limit. On November 22, city officials warned that the daily PM10 quota had been exceeded at two monitoring stations, prompting them to activate the protocol for a level 2 scenario, restricting speed on access roads and within the city while preparing to increase public transportation services.

boasts among its rooms a unique area, which will be opened to the public, exceptionally, throughout the month of December. This area is the Sala de las Camas, which as explained by Pedro Salmerón, architect of the Alhambra, was meant for “maximum relaxation” and where the sultan and his guests took off their clothes and reclined while, possibly, they listened to musicians playing. The baths, whose roofs have been intervened on numerous occasions, the last at the end of the 20th century, was accessed through the Patio de Arrayanes through a door that is still preserved, while the entrance to the boiler was made independently. Light, dominant in all corners of the ‘hammam’, provides a versatility in the setting of this bathroom that gives it a magical appearance, explains the architect referring to a space that was also characterised by its colourful decorative detailing. This first phase of the restoration project, budgeted at 1.16 million euros, has also allowed the discovery of

medieval artisanal techniques in the vaulted roofs after exposing the original lime coatings that covered this area, a fact unknown to date. New traces found also indicate the existence of doors that isolated some rooms from others, discoveries that will be investigated in the near future, according to the director of the Board, Reynaldo Fernández. The restoration has primarily focused on solving the conservation problems motivated, fundamentally, by the infiltration of rainwater, for which action has been taken on the roofing system and the interior lining. The natural ventilation of this space has also been recovered through the skylights and other tasks have been undertaken such as the elimination of inadequate mortars or the reinstallation of the external environmental lighting systems, together with a new provision of channels and downpipes in the immediate surroundings of the bath’s roof. To complete the work, a thorough documentation process has been carried

The Alhambra’s royal bath restored to its former glory The Royal Bath of the Alhambra, the only Islamic medieval bath that has been preserved almost intact in the Western world, has new vaulted roofs after being subjected to a complex restoration that has allowed restorers to delveinto the uses of this unique space, considered one of the jewels of the monument. It was a problem with leaks and humidity that led the Board of the Alhambra and Generalife to undertake this process of restoration in the vaults and interior walls of the baths. The first phase has lasted two years and was presented recently by the counsellor of Culture, Miguel Ángel Vázquez. Located between the emblematic palaces of Comares and Los Leones, the Bath of Comares or Royal Bath, as it was later known due to the private use made of them by the Catholic Monarchs after the Reconquest of Granada, was built by Sultan Ismail I (1314 -1325) and then continued by Yusuf I (1333-1354). An heir, from the point of view of its construction, of the Roman baths, it

the treatment of the walls, tiles and plasterwork. All of which is expected to last at least two more years, according to the director of the Patronage. The Andalusian Minister of Culture has highlighted the balance between research, conservation and sustainability that prevails in the management of the Alhambra, and has been considered for some time the flagship heritage of Andalusia.

YOUNG MAN ACQUITTED IN NEW YEAR’S EVE RAPE CLAIM A 26 year old man has been acquitted of an accusation of rape after he slept with his friend’s mother on New Year’s Eve 2014. The court this week rejected the petition by prosecutors that the man serve ten years due to lack of evidence of no consent. The case was heard this week in the Provincial Court of Valencia where it was decided to acquit the man of the charges. Both the defendant and the complainant are of Colombian nationality. The alleged incident occurred on the night of December 31, 2014 to January 1, 2015, when the accused was with some friends in a nightclub in the Port of Sagunto. At around 6am, he left the nightclub with his friend’s mother and it is claimed they went back to his house. The acquittal reads that “it has not been sufficiently established that the relations maintained by the accused and the complainant would have taken place without the latter’s consent, either because the defendant immobilized her by force or because the complainant was incapacitated by a prior and abundant intake of alcoholic beverages.” The woman reported the incident to police at 8.30pm on January 5, 2015 and went to be examined in hospital at 5.21 pm on the same day. The judge remarked that “it cannot be ignored that the complainant herself admitted that on the night in question (New Year’s Eve), she was emotionally affected by the fact that her son had not visited her and that as a consequence she decided to go out alone and go to a nightclub where, apparently, the clients were mostly of the age of their son.” “The complainant stated that she was at the bar talking to a waitress, although a witness said that she also sought contact with the group of young people, including the witness and the accused, and they even posed for a photograph”.

“This state of mind can explain situations (such as deciding to maintain a sexual encounter with a friend of her son), which under other circumstances would not have been entertained, in the same way that subsequent to the encounter, the complainant may be affected by feelings (such as regret, shame, spite or similar), which will affect her reliability and that would be less explainable if the meeting had not occurred with a friend of his son,” he added. The judge also indicated that “the complainant, justifying the delay of a few days in filing the complaint, also referred to a fear of her son’s reaction if he knew the facts.” He continued, “Nor is the complainant’s reaction consistent after the events took place, as she, once awake and aware of what happened, affirms that she did not want to file a report for fear of her son’s reaction, although on the same day she told a friend what happened.” “And despite that delay of a few days in reporting the incident, she had carefully kept the clothes she wore and the bed clothes where the events took place so that they could be analyzed when she filed the complaint,” the sentence stated.

Health authorities to cut added sugar to fight obesity Spanish health authorities have agreed to reduce the amount of added sugar in grocery products by 10 percent in a bid to reduce the ever-increasing incidence of obesity in modern society. Thousands of products which are regularly consumed in Spain contain added sugar, which makes up around 64 percent of the calories in the average shopping basket, according to health minister Dolors Montserrat. Presenting her nutrition and anti-obesity plan for the next three years, which is expected to be finalised by the middle or end of January, Sra Montserrat says the sugar reduction will not only affect manufacturing but also vending machines, catering firms and restaurant menus. Coordinator of the Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity Prevention (NAOS) Strategy, María de los Ángeles dal Re, says groceries habitually consumed by children and families are the worst offenders, but that the sugar content will be reduced very gradually 'so nobody notices the difference'. “One day you'll by a product where the sugar has been reduced, the next week you'll buy it again, you'll gradually become used to it and, almost without noticing, you'll be consuming less sugar in the long run,” Sra dal Re explains. “Several hundred food companies have agreed to follow the NAOS Strategy,

including the most powerful market leaders.” She did not reveal their names, since agreements are still being finalised, but says the industry in general has volunteered to stick with the plan rather than its having to be enforced. Groceries affected will include soft drinks – including fruit juices sold as 'nectar' rather than 'juice' which are typically only about 55 percent fruit and

the rest water, sugar and additives – plus yoghurts, biscuits and 'in general, all those we know well and which fill up a typical family shopping basket', Sra dal Re explains. The sugar reduction will eventually follow on with other strategies including reducing fat and salt. Health minister Montserrat recalled that obesity is one of the most serious medical concerns of the 21st century, but says she is 'baffled' as to how it can be such a problem in Spain, which she

describes as 'the allotment of Europe' because of its being the source country of so many types of fresh fruit and vegetables and having long been famous as one of the 'cradles of the Mediterranean diet'. The number of children considered clinically obese in the world as a whole has multipled tenfold in the last 40 years, since 1977, and children who are overweight now make up nearly half of all those aged five to 18 inclusive, whilst overweight adults in the western world account for well over half. Latest World Health Organisation (WHO) reports show that as at the end of 2016, a total of 75 million girls aged five to 18 and 117 million boys in the same age bracket were overweight. Worldwide, this means 5 percent of girls and 8 percent of boys, although clearly, the global figure also includes the majority of inhabitants on the planet who do not have enough to eat. Back in 1975, the figure of five million girls and six million boys overweight represented less than 1 percent of the population of both. Convenience food, due to parents needing to save time in an ever-more pressured world, and unhealthy school lunches are thought to be some of the problem.

Mary via email asks: Hi Aunty, I ran Malwarebytes for the first time and the the number of items it listed is very long and very I haven’t a clue what any of the things that has found are. Is there any things that I should be careful with? Aunty Says: Hi Mary. Malwarebytes will find things like Adware and PUPS (Potentially Unwanted Programs) and it will often also find a lot of mostly harmless stuff that has built up simply by using the internet. I always let Malwarebytes get on and quarantine everything that it finds. I rarely even bother looking through the list. Carol from Montesinos asks: Hello Aunty. My HP laptop has started to show a constantly flashing green light on the front by the battery symbol which occasionally changes to orange and at that exact moment I get a message from Windows that the battery is critically low and I should switch to a mains supply. I always have the laptop plugged into the mains so I’m a bit puzzled why I am getting a battery warning message. Can you suggest what I should do? I have Windows 7.

Technology

Aunty Says: Hello Carol. It sounds like it is time for a new battery, or as you are

running your laptop only from the mains, you could simply take the battery out. If you turn your laptop over you should see a couple of catches that you simply slide and lift the battery out. All laptops have different setups and a lot of the new generation don’t have an easily removable battery, so if you have any doubts, email me the exact model and I will check for you.

Barry via email asks: Hello Aunty. Somehow I have downloaded something called search.snap.do and it has taken over my internet and Google. I have tried to get rid of it by following other people’s suggestions on the web but it has so far resisted all of my efforts. I have Malwarebytes and I have also tried Superantispyware but with no luck. I have scanned with AVG but again to no avail. Aunty Says: This is a nasty stubborn browser hijacker Barry and it can be a pain to get rid of. Try the free Adwcleaner from www.toolslib.net which has got me out of many a sticky situation. Once installed click on the “Scan” button and once finished click on the “Clean” button. There are places that search.snap.do can hide itself that are beyond the reach of any cleaning apps, so try Adwcleaner and if you’re still in trouble then let me know. As always you can email me with your questions to auntyvirus@costablancapeople.com and I’ll see what I can do.

Christmas Around the World: New and Old Traditions Christmas is largely considered a universal celebration — with countries across the world coming together to celebrate this joyous occasion with their own variations and traditions. And if you're looking to create some new traditions this year, we've rounded up some of the most bizarre; from BBQing on the beach, to watching a demon creature wander the streets, here are some of our favourites. Iceland Christmas in Iceland — or ‘Yule’ as it's better known — is certainly a celebration. With 13 Santa's in total, they're certainly not short of Christmas spirit. Although the Icelandic versions are more like trolls, the general rules still apply (be good or you'll go on the naughty list). Over the 13 days leading up to Christmas, children place a shoe in their window and each Santa takes turns leaving sweets, small presents (or rotting potatoes) depending on the child's behaviour. Australia It wouldn't be an Australian Christmas without a few kangaroos being let loose and our expectations certainly don’t fall short. Instead of Rudolph, Australians look out for 'red nosed kangaroos', and instead of a traditional turkey dinner, everyone gets together for a BBQ on the beach. It's a far contrast from the woolly hats and gloves many of us associate with the festive season of our childhoods, but pretty close to the local tradition of Christmas Day on La Zenia Beach.

Armenia I think we can all agree that food is a highlight of the festive period, and many of us will finish celebrations feeling much like the stuffed turkey we devoured. However, Armenia take their measures to not gain weight seriously, and as a result, they commence fasting the week before Christmas eve (which is celebrated on January 5th rather than in December). At this time, they settle down to a meal called 'Khetum', which involves stocking up on fish, rice, chickpeas and jellied deserts, without worrying about undoing their zippers around the table in preparation. Japan Of course, Japan is known for doing all things considered weird and wonderful — and Christmas is no different. Since Christmas is a fairly new tradition for the Japanese people, celebrations are modest, with small gifts being exchanged between friends and family. But where food is concerned, they’ve taken things to a whole new level with a newfound tradition of feasting on KFC. What a way to celebrate! Norway Comparatively, Norway has a very old tradition going back centuries, which only a few still participate in. It emerged from the idea that evil spirits and witches come out on Christmas Eve in search of modes of transport — i.e. brooms. To this day, people still hide their brooms for safe keeping. Although a little more spooky than a magical man flying around the world to deliver gifts, it's certainly an interesting tradition.

Austria Speaking of spooky, Austria also has some pretty nightmarish traditions of their own. With similar ideas on evil spirits making themselves known on Christmas Eve, a demon creature is known to wander the streets, looking for badly behaved children so that they can be punished. Perhaps not a tradition you want to adopt in your own family... Colombia This beautiful tradition quite literally lights up the world (well, a section of it) with people placing candles and paper lanterns in windows and gardens to mark the start of the Christmas season. This takes place on the 7th December, which is also believed to be the eve of immaculate conception and so is done in honour of Virgin Mary. It has developed further over the years and so now whole towns are lit up with astounding light displays every year. Philippines The giant latern festival of Ligligan Parul Sampernandu is held each year on the Saturday before Christmas Eve in the city of San Fernando – the “Christmas Capital of the Philippines.” The festival attracts spectators from all over the country and across the globe. Eleven barangays (villages) take part in the festival and competition is fierce as everyone pitches in trying to build the most elaborate lantern. Originally, the lanterns were simple creations around half a metre in diameter,

made from ‘papel de hapon’ (Japanese origami paper) and lit by candle. Today, the lanterns are made from a variety of materials and have grown to around six metres in size. They are illuminated by electric bulbs that sparkle in a kaleidoscope of patterns. Sweden Since 1966, a 13-metre-tall Yule Goat has been built in the centre of Gävle’s Castle Square for the Advent, but this Swedish Christmas tradition has unwittingly led to another “tradition” of sorts – people trying to burn it down. Since 1966 the Goat has been successfully burned down 29 times – the most recent destruction was in 2016. If you want to see how the Goat fares this year when it goes up on December 1st, you can follow its progress on the Visit Gävle website through a live video stream. Germany Not to be confused with Weihnachtsmann (Father Christmas), Nikolaus travels by donkey in the middle of the night on 6th December (Nikolaus Tag) and leaves little treats like coins, chocolate, oranges and toys in the shoes of good children all over Germany, and particularly in the Bavarian region. St. Nicholas also visits children in schools or at home and in exchange for sweets or a small present each child must recite a poem, sing a song or draw a picture. In short, he’s a great guy. But it isn’t always fun and games. St. Nick often brings along Knecht Ruprecht (Farmhand Rupert). A devil-like character

dressed in dark clothes covered with bells and a dirty beard, Knecht Ruprecht carries a stick or a small whip in hand to punish any children who misbehave. USA The Jewish holiday of Hanukkah is celebrated with much fanfare across the United States with one of the most elaborate events taking place on a national stage. Since 1979, a giant nine-metre Menorah has been raised on the White House grounds for the eight days and nights of Hanukkah. The ceremony in Washington, D.C. is marked with speeches, music, activities for kids, and, of course, the lighting of the Menorah. The lighting of the first candle at the White House takes place at 4pm, rain or shine, and an additional candle is lit each successive night. The event is free to attend, but tickets must be booked in advance. Venezuela Love Christmas, but think it could be improved by a spot of roller-blading? If the answer is yes, visit Caracas, Venezuela this year. Every Christmas Eve, the city’s residents head to church in the early morning – so far, so normal – but, for reasons known only to them, they do so upon roller skates. This unique tradition is so popular that roads across the city are closed to cars so that people can skate to church in safety, before heading home for the less-thantraditional Christmas dinner of ‘tamales’ (a wrap made out of cornmeal dough and stuffed with meat, then steamed).

SMARMY BMW businessmen, holier-than-thou Prius drivers and reckless Subaru boy-racers – these are the stereotypes which rule the roads, research has found. A study has revealed the driving stereotypes British motorists actually believe are true. Almost a third of Brits think BMW drivers are obnoxious business types, and one in eight imagine a banker in the front seat of a MercedesBenz. A Volkswagen Camper is most likely to evoke images of a hippie behind the wheel, while Volkswagen Beetles are considered a hairdresser’s getaround. But while judgemental motorists are quick to guess the personality traits of other drivers, just one in six think they fit the stereotype associated with their own car. James Buttrick, spokesman for Vantage Leasing, which commissioned the study, said: “Whether accurate or not, the type of car we drive is seen to

portray a great deal about our personality on the roads. “The next time you find yourself in need of a new car, it might be worth considering the stereotype associated with each brand before making your final decision.” Brits expect a Land Rover to be

driven by an upper-class mum on the school run, and Porsches are the preserve of middle-aged men who are trying to look wealthier than they actually are. Fords, meanwhile, are considered a safe bet, driven by 'average parents'. The research, carried out via OnePoll.com, also revealed a third reckon you can tell a lot about a

person by the car they drive, and one in eight admit to judging someone on their choice of vehicle above all else. Yet a third of drivers don’t think their car represents their personality at all. Despite the negative connotations of these popular stereotypes, Brits aren’t letting the opinions of other motorists influence them when they hit the dealership forecourt. Only eight per cent have considered a car brand’s image when making a vehicle purchase, with nine in 10 believing they are impervious to being duped by car advertising and the lifestyles they promise. Audi is the car brand Britons consider most desirable, followed by Aston Martin, while BMW appears at the bottom of the list. BMW drivers are also perceived to be the most reckless on the roads, along with those behind the wheel of an Audi or Subaru.

Warning Triangles It is mandatory for all vehicles to carry two warning triangles. These triangles must be of a certified standard for Europe. Homologation certification is shown by the presence of a label, sticker or stamp, similar to that on child seats, which, amongst other codes referring to the manufacturer and other details, shows the letter “E” and a number in a circle. The code is sometimes in a box rather than a circle, but it depends on the product in question. For warning triangles, we are looking for a circle and in particular you are looking for E9. The “E” refers to a European standard and in this case, “9” refers to the item having been certified in Spain. By the way, E11 refers to the UK, but so long as your triangle carries the European certificated stamp, it is acceptable for use in Spain. The reason two triangles must be carried is that at times we need to offer a warning and protection from vehicles approaching from the front, as well as from behind. We will look at that in some detail on the next page. Once you have your warning triangles, the next stage is often overlooked, but it is a good idea to take them out or the packaging and assemble them a couple of times. Usually, when we need to use warning triangles we need to assemble them quickly to provide as much warning as possible. It is mandatory to carry them, but they will be of little use if you don´t know how to use them. That is why we recommend you practice, and keep practicing, so that if the time ever does arise, you know immediately how to assemble them. If you are carrying them in your boot, although they should be in a secure place, we also suggest that you always have them at hand. It´s not a good idea to pile your shopping and other items on top of the triangles as if you do need to use them, you need to access them quickly. Some vehicles have warning triangles installed as standard, sometime in the lid of the boot, which you can just take out at a moment’s notice. Again though, make sure you know how to take them out so that if you need them, you know exactly how to access them. It is also a good idea to carry them in some kind of protective case and to ensure that they are kept clean so that their high visibility standards are maintained. Where to Place Your Warning Triangles In the event of your vehicle becoming immobilised on the road and causing a hazard, you must provide additional warnings to other road users of your presence. We deal with the entire process in another article but you must remember that the first thing you must do is switch on your vehicle´s hazard warning lights. This applies both in the day and at night. You must then place your warning triangles in such a manner to provide sufficient warning to oncoming vehicles. Ordinarily, you must place your triangles 50 metres away from your vehicle, so that they are visible from a distance of 100 metres. On a normal two-way road you must place one triangle behind and one in front of your vehicle, both at a distance of 50 metres and visible from at least 100 metres. On a one-way road, or a road which has

more than 3 lanes, such as a motorway, you only need to place one triangle at the rear of your vehicle 50 metres away and visible from 100 metres. Ensuring that your triangle is visible is crucial to offering a warning to approaching vehicles. In the event that your vehicle is after a bend or over the brow of a hill, move the triangle further away so that it is visible before vehicles reach the bend or brow. Mark Nolan

European Tyre Safety Ratings

Driving Restrictions for Pensioners

In 2012, the European Union made moves to implement new rules on the labelling of tyres for sale. Much like washing machines or fridges, and even properties for sale, an easy indication of the tyre´s characteristics would be displayed on the label, enabling the buyer to choose their product based on such elements as efficiency, safety rating and noise. The information on the tyre label included roll resistance, graded from “A” which is the best performance, to a “G” rating, the lower end of the scale in tests. Tyres with a higher resistance increase the workload of the engine, in turn leading to higher fuel costs. Adherence to wet surfaces was also a graded factor on the label, once again graded “A” to “G”, with “A” showing the best performance. Across the spectrum of the rating scale, the braking distance

Drivers over the age of 65 may face restrictions on their driving based on medical conditions. Depending on the type and severity of medical failures, the traffic department have issued a list of guidelines on restrictions that the over 65´s may face. The first restriction could be based on distance, with older drivers restricted to journeys not exceeding either 20 or 50 kilometres distance. Elderly drivers may also face permanent bans from driving on motorways, or at night. Drivers may face restrictions in the maximum permitted speed which the vehicle they are driving may travel. The actual restrictions will be assessed by the driving examiners based on the medical evidence but could restrict vehicles to a maximum of either 70 or 100 kilometres per hour. Driving licences will have to be

between a grade “A” and a grade “G” tyre may be as much as 18 metres, significantly reducing the chance of avoiding a collision in the event of having to brake in wet weather. Of course, driving skills and ability can also allow for more compensation by increasing the distance between you and the vehicle in front, for example. Noise level is also included in the tyre rating, again, this can be determined by other factors such as the road itself. In many places, so called “quiet tarmac” has been installed to reduce noise, but the tyre noise rating is based on an average. When buying new tyres, always check the labelling system to ensure you know the quality of the tyres to be installed on your vehicle. Poor quality may increase risk and with tyre safety, compromise if not an ideal agenda. Mark Nolan

renewed every 5 years for the over 65´s, rather than every 10 years for those under the age bracket. However, the 5 year renewal is based on a person of optimum health, the examination may result in a forced renewal every 2, 3 or 4 years, which may alter after each renewal depending on how health has declined.

The over 65´s must also provide a certificate from the family doctor in the case of having been diagnosed with a chronic disease which may affect driving ability, if they have had cataract surgery or heart surgery, and if they are diabetic or taking medications such as Sintrom or other anticoagulant drugs. Staying Safe this Christmas

Check Your Lights Although we are getting closer to the time when the evenings start to get lighter, the lights on our vehicles have possibly been in use more than ever, and so it´s a good time to check that all of the lights on our vehicles are fully working. Until quite recently, all vehicles had to carry a spare set of bulbs, this is no longer the case. The Spanish government recognised that changing a bulb is no longer a simple task, and in many cases can only be done by qualified mechanics, and so carrying a spare set was pointless, if the ability to change the bulbs had been removed. However, it is still important to check all of the lights on a regular basis, even those not used too often, such as fog lights. It is better to have an assistant to help you do this so that one of you can be in the car operating the switches, the other on the outside monitoring the results. Remember, check every light, headlights (including full beam), indicators and hazard lights (front and back), rear lights and brake lights, reversing and fog lights, and the lights that illuminate the number plate at the

rear. If your vehicle is a modern one you might also have Daytime Running Lights installed. Although these lights are often more reliable than traditional lights, on account of them being LED´s, they should also be checked on a regular basis. If you don´t have anybody to help you can still carry out the checks by using reflective surfaces such as shop windows or other parked vehicles. Make sure you do this in an isolated location though as you don´t want to confuse other motorists. If any of the lights have failed make sure you get them replaced immediately as it is an offence to drive with defective lights. Mark Nolan

Although no specific threats have been received and the threat level in Spain remains the same as it has done for some time, it is inevitable that security measures will be increased to ensure that the festive period passes as safely as possible. Guardia Civil and police checkpoints will be in place in various locations. Although many of these will be traffic related, there will also be many others which are checking vehicles for security reasons. Once again we remind everyone of the importance of not sharing the locations of these checkpoints should you see them, such as through social media, as this often gives those who may be intent on criminal activity the opportunity to avoid detection. If you are stopped at a checkpoint the advice remains the same too. Stay calm and act on the instructions of the officers involved. If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear and you will be on your way in a very short space of time. It´s not only on the roads where danger lurks at Christmas time, which is why the police also offer a wealth of advice on how to stay safe, with the hope of making shoppers and traders aware of potential risks, thus hoping to reduce the number of scams, thefts and robberies that often occur in areas where large crowds gather. A greater presence of police officers will be noticeable in key areas, as more officers are being deployed, not only on foot, but on horseback and supported

by their k-9 colleagues as well. A guide book was previously produced, and is still available, warning of the dangers, and current information can always be obtained through the three Twitter accounts, @policia, @interiorgob and @polprvalencia, which are the National Police, Interior Ministry and Valencia Police respectively. One of the most frequent incidents the police have to deal with is lost children. The police recommend the obvious, keeping a close eye on children at all times, but also the less obvious, such as ensuring the child knows their name and a telephone number to contact in emergencies. They also recommend a wrist band or bracelet with the name and contact number of the parents printed or engraved on it. For adults, you should avoid carrying large amounts of cash and make sure that you are not followed when you have collected cash from an ATM or a bank. If you become suspicious, contact the police immediately. Do not accept help from strangers who supposedly want to help, they sometimes take advantage of your guard being lowered in order to grab money and valuables. Avoid street-gamers playing such tricks as the “shell game” or “find the lady” type scams, not only will you not win, your distraction leaves you vulnerable to theft. When you visit friends and neighbours, always lock your home securely, leave nothing of value in view,

don´t fully lower your window blinds and don´t announce your intentions to vacate the premises on social media. Similar advice also applies to the car of course, never leave valuables such as gifts on show. If you return to your vehicle with goods, be careful you are not seen if you then leave your car to continue to shop. The Police would also like to remind party organisers and revellers that any activity, party or public celebration must have administrative approval and comply with safety standards, such as having fire extinguishers, security and emergency exits indicated. If any incident occurs: keep calm and try to stay away from that area, alerting the organiser or 091. Always follow the event security personnel or police where appropriate. Finally, if you see anything or anybody acting suspiciously, please notify the authorities immediately. Although you might not consider it an emergency, the 112 call centre is staffed by people who speak a variety of languages and nobody will be offended if an alert turns out to be false, as that is by far a better outcome than ignoring something which later results in a tragic incident. Stay safe this holiday period, look after yourself and your belongings, keep them out of sight at all times, keep bags and wallets secure and never unattended, and be vigilant, that way we can all hope for a safe and peaceful Christmas and New Year period. Your week in Sport BY CHRIS DARWEN

It’s not been the best week for Team Sky and that whole cycling thing, has it? Chris Froome, he leading the crusade against the cheats of the sport, appears to have had failed a drugs test during La Vuelta. In what is becoming quite a regular thing for Sir David Brailsford’s lot now, the report revealed that the 32-year-old had double the permitted levels of the asthma medication salbutamol in his body but, of course according to Team Sky, had not broken any rules. Team Sky have “utmost” confidence that they had only pushed the rules to the absolute limits and not broken them. Froome, after all, was only “following doctors” orders. Either way, the whole thing stinks yet again. Not connected was the news that Sky are selling a whole chunk of their business to Disney which could mean that the bankrolling of the cycling team might come to an end in the not too distant future. Speaking of alleged drug cheats, Tyson Fury is allowed to reapply for a license to fight once again. UKAD chose to backdate his two-year boxing ban for various reasons far too boring to go into. Having seen clips of Fury on Soccer AM a couple of weeks ago I would suggest that we won’t be seeing him fight anyone of note in the first few months of 2018. Phil Taylor has started his final ever World Darts Championship campaign as he calls it a day once he gets knocked out pretty early in this tournament. Taylor was never likely to be massively popular as he has won a lot of stuff, but there won’t be too many sorry to see him go as his levels of grumpiness around events add at least another 20 years to the 57 he already has

on the board. You might be wondering why I haven’t mentioned the Ashes yet. That’s because it’s all over. Please note, I am writing this on Sunday night when England will bat again overnight 180 odd behind with 6 wickets remaining. I’m going to make a bold statement. There’s no point me even redrafting this come the Monday morning 1030 deadline as there is no way on Earth Australia are going to have to bat again in this Test. Unless it rains a lot, Australia will be taking a 3-0 lead and lifting the Urn. Mind you, that’s kind of what happens when you turn up with a bowling attack completely unsuited to the playing conditions and your two best batsmen appear to have left their form under the Christmas tree back in Blighty.
