MUNICIPAL THEATRE REOPENS T

orrevieja’s Municipal Theatre has reopened after a closure of over four years. The reopening was marked by the coronation of the Queen of Salt in advance of the town’s Patronal Fiestas (more information about the fiestas on page 8).

The reopening of the theatre was high on Mayor Eduardo Dolón’s list of election promises. The theatre had been closed down by the previous administration because of licencing issues but Dolón had always claimed that it could have remained open while the paperwork was regularised as it had been open for nine years previously. Eduardo Dolón explained that the theatre was opened based on the provisions of article 10 of Law 14/2010 of

public shows, recreational activities and public establishments. Specifically, the accreditation issued by the Administrative Certification Body (OCA), which is sufficient for the completion of the file and the opening of the venue. Throughout the closure of the theatre, the PP had always maintained that the Municipal Theatre did not require an opening license, and that certification issued by the OCA is a substitute for the license and allows activity to commence.

The mayor said that this opening procedure is fully compatible with the September 2015 communication from the Ministry of the Interior, since the theatre has never been formally closed. The final paperwork required to open the theatre was issued on November 19th. In the meantime, the green party took legal action to try to prevent the reopening of the theatre. €150,000 is being spent on repairs to the building including electrical work, plumbing, carpentry, lighting, maintenance and air conditioning.

BITE SIZE Post offices in the NEWS: province of Alicante 32 uninterrupted hours of work went into the 2019 hackathon, a unique event which brings together the brightest young minds in tech and coding. First prize went to the project ‘Reac.Asistencia Sin Fronteras’ – assistance without borders, which saw developers create an app which will help tourists report incidents to the emergency services. The event was attended by around 50 ‘hackers’ who were divided into 10 teams for the contest. The aim was to create an app which related to Torrevieja as a destination and could be to do with accessibility, sustainability or tourism. The winning team members, Maite Hernández, Carlos García and Antonio Fajardo, came to the event as individuals and decided on the day to join up as a team. Their app allows users to contact emergencies and leave an alert in any language. The idea is that when the tourist is, for example, in a country where he does not speak the language and suffers an accident, he can open the app and type a message. The app will identify the native language, translate it to the target language, launch the call to the local emergency number and a bot will verbalize the original message and the exact geolocation using coordinates from where the message is being sent. to sell train tickets Renfe and the Spanish postal service Correos have signed a commercial agreement whereby 55 post offices across the province of Alicante will sell AVE and Long and Medium Distance tickets through an authorised travel agency. According to Renfe due to this agreement more than 961,000 people from Alicante who previously had no local point of sale will be able to benefit. The agreement, which opens a new stage in the relationship between the two public companies, allows the Correos the possibility of continuing to implement its strategy of diversification of activities. Post Offices have considerable potential for diversification given the ability to use its offices as a distribution and sales channel given their blanket coverage across local communities. It should be noted that Post offices received more than 93.5 million visits throughout 2018. For Renfe, the deal facilitates the fulfilment of its essential public service objective.

Of the total post offices where rail transport tickets will be made available to users, 1,297 are located in rural or low-density areas of population in which more than 15 million citizens reside and there are no current access points for the face-toface purchase of Renfe train tickets. With this agreement points of sale will be created in: Agost, Albatera, Alcoy, L'Alfás del Pí, Almoradí, Altea, Aspe, Banyeres de Mariola, Beneixama, Benejuzar, Benidorm, Benissa, Benitatxell, Biar, Bigastro, Callosa d ' in Sarrià, Calp, El Campello, Castalla, Catral, Cox, Denia, Dolores, Finestrat, Gorta de Gorgos, Guardamar del Segura, Ibi, Jávea, Monforte del Cid, Monóvar, Moraira, Muro, Mutxamel, La Nucia, Ondara, Onil , Orba, Orihuela Costa, Pedreguer, Pego, Petrer, Pilar de la Horada, El Pinós, Polop de la Marina, Redován, Rojales, San Fulgencio, San Miguel de Salinas, Sant Joan d'Alacant, Santa Pola, Teulada, Torrevieja, La Verger, La Vila Joiosa and Xixona.

Festive fun with charity Santa Walk Fun and fundraising often go hand-in-hand here on the coast and despite the cooler temperatures December is no exception. The 1st December sees one of the biggest and most popular charity events of the year as Maria and the Pink Ladies hosts its Santa Walk. This event has been running in aid of the anticancer charity the AECC for many years and is always a great day out full of festive fun and community spirit. The 5km Santa Walk will take place at Zenia Boulevard starting at 12 noon from the centre stage and is a fantastic way to get into the spirit of Christmas as walkers and those providing moral support or just coming along to enjoy the atmosphere are being asked to join in the festive fun by dressing in Santa suits or as any Christmas character such as snowmen, reindeer (or rein-dogs), Mrs Christmas, snowflakes or even the Grinch. Many arrive wearing Christmas jumpers or onesies, which is perfect if the weather does take a dip. The 5k route starts and ends at the shopping centre, weaving its

way around Orihuela Costa, escorted by the Local Police and participants can walk, run, jog, stroll or cycle ride and it’s an event for all the family, young, old and four-legged to enjoy. Money is

raised through sponsorship, personal donation and the €5 registration fee. Walkers are requested to arrive at 11am to ensure all registrations are complete by the start time. The Royal British Legion Concert Band will be on stage from 11am playing carols and

festive music along with Simon Morton from Sunshine FM playing everyone’s favourite Christmas pop tunes to get everyone in the Christmas mood. Members of the public are also being asked to donate food and hygiene products, which will be donated to less fortunate families and individuals through Reach Out Torrevieja. Of course, all of the shops, bars and restaurants will be open in the Boulevard, so why not make a day of it and enjoy everything that’s on offer as well as raising money for a very deserving cause. Since its inception nine years ago, Maria and the Pink Ladies has raised hundreds of thousands of euros for the AECC Early Detection Programme. The AECC Early Detection Programme saves lives by allowing members of the public of any nationality, race or culture access to subsidised private healthcare cancer testing. These are offered to men and women to test for cancers including: skin, bowel, prostate, breast, cervical and ovarian. The tests can be complete in Alicante or at the IMED clinic in Torrevieja.

Gender Violence increases across Orihuela

Mayor works

visits

Marina

The Mayor paid a visit to the International Marina in Torrevieja this week to check on the progress of the €3.1m facelift currently underway at the facility. The works aim to improve the use of the marina for over 800 users that dock their vessels there on a permanent basis as well as the many passers-by who temporarily moor at the facility to visit the city of Torrevieja. The investment is being used to renovate structural elements and facilities that, after thirty years of use, are in desperate need of improvement. Outdated and unnecessary elements have been removed and the electrical supply system has been adapted to comply with current regulations. To allow for a future adaption in the event of a rise in sea levels due to climate change, the height of the jetties and walkways has been increased.

Car overturns in town centre A car overturned in Torrevieja centre at 6pm on Saturday evening. Crowds gathered around the spectacular incident which took place on Plaza de Caballero Bonald, near the municipal old folks’ home. The car flipped, as it impacted with a parked car, and blocked the street. The driver was trapped inside the overturned vehicle and Local Police were called to the scene to help free her. There were no serious injuries beyond some minor cuts and bruises. Fire crews arrived moments later and between them, the emergency services worked together to control traffic and remove the overturned car from the street.

Taxi driver on way to Benidorm A taxi driver from Northern Ireland has set off on a 1,700 mile journey to pick up a regular customer - who was injured in Benidorm. Phil Hamilton is on his way to Benidorm after his friend Jim Moore suffered a head injury while on holiday last week. Jim, 58, was declared missing for 72 hours after going on a group holiday. Friends set up a search party and social media campaign to try to track him down. He was eventually found in a hospital being treated for a serious head injury following a fall. Now Phil, from 365 Taxis, County Antrim, has agreed to turn off his meter in order to get Jim back to Northern Ireland. A number of friends and the taxi firm have clubbed together to cover the costs of the journey which is expected to take a few days. Driver Phil said: "It's just the right thing to do. Jim is out of danger but he has been advised by the medical team not to fly for a few months, so this is the best way to get him home. "He has spent time in a Spanish hospital on his own separated from friends and family and now we'll get him in the car and we can have a good chat on the way back. I'll be driving myself but the family are keeping me company. "It's about 1,700 miles to Benidorm so we've left Newtownabbey and are getting the ferry to Scotland and then we'll drive on down to Benidorm.”

Orihuela’s Councillor for Equality, Mayte Sánchez, has given details of the latest gender violence statistics for the municipality. This shows in the last year a total of 104 official instances, which is 31 percent more than in the previous year. According to the report 97 of the cases were reported and dealt with as part of the multi-disciplinary intervention program. The Councillor said that the Department of Equality provides information and counselling sessions with the women and their families if that is relevant. In many cases children and close family members are adversely affected by the domestic violence. Individual treatment is very important, but it is also accompanied by group therapy. Therefore, this year a group session was attended by 6 women. 10 minors are also being offered support. Of the 97 women currently being helped, 57 are Spanish, 18 European, 13 South American, 8 African and 1 Asian.

The Councillor said: “Gender violence is universal, it occurs in all countries around the world, regardless of people’s economic situation, their level of education, their geographical situation.” In Orihuela the majority of women live in Orihuela city (49), compared to 24 women in the suburbs and 24 on the Orihuela Costa. In terms of age, 51 women between 30 and 50 years old have been treated, compared to 29 over 50 years of age and 18 women under 30 years old (one of them under the age of 18). According to the information supplied, economic dependence and children continue to be the main barriers to a woman leaving the home or dealing with the situation. Of the specific cases in this municipality approximately 55 percent of the women do not have their own resources (49 are unemployed and five are students), 77 of them were in long term relationships and 75 of them also have children.

Guardamar to excavate Islamic tower The City of Guardamar del Segura has begun the archaeological excavation and work consolidating the remains of the Moncayo site, where there is an Islamic tower dating from the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. The tower was subsequently reused in the eighteenth century as part of the military campaign of Oran of Algeria, as explained by the Councillor for Historical Heritage, Pilar Gay, who stressed that this site is "another element of the great archaeological heritage" of the municipality. The work consists of the excavation of the entire interior floor of the historic building,

which is 10 x 7 square meters. In addition, several surveys are planned on its surroundings to discover and document other archaeological remains in the area. "Once completed, the remains discovered will be consolidated to avoid deterioration due to natural causes and a small museum will be made to make the site more understandable" the councillor has advanced. The cost of the work amounts to almost 14,000 euros, of which 70 percent comes from a grant from the Ministry of Culture and the remaining funds from the municipal coffers. The project has been

proposed by the Consistory of Guardamar del Segura, through the archaeological museum and the technical office. The company that will undertake the work is Alebus collaboration alongside the University of Alicante (UA). Councillor Gay has stressed that the site of the Islamic tower represents "another point of great historical importance for Guardamar and the region. It is, in her opinion, of a heritage value that makes this municipality "a great archaeological park" that the local government intends to investigate bit-by-bit and maximise it for the enjoyment of all citizens.

Torrevieja’s big fiestas kick off Every town in Spain has a patron saint around which the town’s ‘Patronal Fiestas’ are celebrated. Torrevieja is no different and at this time of year, the traditional celebrations in honour of the patron – La Purísima – begin. A full programme of events has been announced by the town hall so if you live here or are visiting the area for a holiday, it is highly recommended that you try to catch at least one or two of the events to experience the local fiesta traditions. Highlights The spectacular tradition of the Offering of Flowers will take place next Saturday, November 30 – local bands, families and groups of children walk in procession through the town, ending at the main church square where floral offerings in the traditional colours of blue and white are affixed to the front of the church. Bands participating include Musical Society “La Harmonónica” of Cox, Bigastro Musical Society, La Constancia de Catral Band, Musical Union of Almoradí, Musical Society “La Filarmónica” of Callosa del Segura, Los Montesinos Music Band and Aspe Music Band. Various individual neighbourhoods in town will host street parties with barbecues, paella, raffles and music. These smaller street parties take place throughout the end of November and culminate on November 30 when the party moves to the Plaza de la Constitución with the "Zentro Fest", which will begin at 10 pm with performances by well known DJs. That same night, alongside celebration of the "Zentro Fest" the first outing of Lily, the Ogre and the Wolf takes place. Lily and friends, along

with the ‘Bigheads’ are emblematic of the local fiestas in Torrevieja and have been entertaining children here since the 1950s. Lily is based on a character in a film of the same name played by Leslie Caron which came out in 1953. The film was very popular and her two giant cohorts, the Wolf and the Ogre are also taken from the film in which they appeared as puppets in a travelling circus show. Every year since then, Lily and her friends, who include the Cabezudos (the Bigheads); characters such as the Marx brothers, Snow White and Laurel and Hardy, have delighted children and adults alike. The beloved ‘Carols in the Square’ concert takes place on December 13th and will include performances by the RBL band and the Torrevieja youth band with over 40 musicians set to participate under the guidance of musical director David Last. The words to the songs will, as always, be printed in that week’s edition of the Costa Blanca People so make sure to bring along your copy or pick one up at the town square so that you can join in the singing. Local Police trained to detect drug driving A theoretical and practical training course on drug detection in drivers has been given to Local Police officers working across the municipality of Orihuela. The Councillor for Human Resources, Luisa Boné, and the Chief of the Local Police of Orihuela, José María Pomares Vergel, welcomed the 35 municipal officers who participated. The Chief of Police pointed out that "it is very important to approach and carry out training in the workplace itself, and we thank the Councillor for her

willingness to organise courses that cover specific training needs of the security staff." The course lasted 20 hours and officers heard from the Chief Prosecutor of Elche and Orihuela and the delegate of Road Safety

for Alicante, José Antonio Artieda Gracia. The Councillor for Human Resources has pledged to continue working to improve and bring training closer to the entire police force.

Most beautiful dog in Spain lives in Almoradi Blaser de Mil Lunas, a German shorthaired Braco, from Almoradi, has been declared the “most beautiful” dog in Spain in the 'young' category for dogs aged between 9 to 18 months old. The animal won in the Beauty category in a dog show that took place at the Palace of Fairs and Exhibitions (IFEPA) in Torre Pacheco in a competition in which dogs from all over Spain

competed. Blaser de Mil Lunas won by two points to scoop the accolade delighting its owners Cristina Valero Sigüenza and Manuel Antonio Cabrera who have owned the dog since it was two months old and have spent months preparing the dog for the show. Blaser de Mil Lunas has participated in several of the canine competitions across the

province of Alicante and that the judges appreciate that the dog meets all the requirements of a "hunting" breed. Manuel Antonio Cabrera explained after receiving the award that it is ‘recognition of all the work carried out over many months, and that it puts both Almoradi and Vega Baja in this wonderful animal world on the map, is a great pride’.

Christmas Jumper Day With help still desperately needed in the run up to Christmas, the Costa Blanca People is encouraging local businesses, clubs and groups to take part in a festive fundraiser – Christmas Jumper Day. Friday 13th December is set to be more Christmassy than Christmas itself as businesses and groups of friends across the southern Costa Blanca don their best Christmas Jumper in the name of charity. The Costa Blanca People and Kosta Kitchens are encouraging everyone to join in the fun – and all you need to do is get your Christmas Jumper on! Work is so much more fun when you’re wearing a Christmas Jumper – or even a pair of silly reindeer antlers, so get your colleagues (and your boss!) on board. The campaign is not only for people in the workplace – if you have a group of friends, a club or a charity, you are also most welcome to take part! If you don’t have a Christmas Jumper already, don’t worry! You can decorate an ordinary jumper, or borrow one from a friend. What’s important is that together,

we have the chance to raise money for families in need this Christmas! We suggest a minimum donation of €2 per person but obviously, the more you can give the more it will help. Decide how much you want to ask

colleagues and clients to donate. Ask family and friends for sponsorship. If you like, you can turn it into an event or party for clients and provide mince pies and a glass of mulled wine. How

much you do is up to you but the idea is to raise as much money on the day as you can. Make sure to take plenty of photos (and videos) and post these to your social media, tagging the Costa Blanca People as you go. This way, all of our readers and followers will be able to see who is taking part. Many families are still getting back on their feet, having lost everything in the floods. With this fundraiser, we want to be able to give these families a boost. The donations will be shared among families most in need and will be used towards Christmas – whether that is help towards covering the cost of Christmas dinner or gifts for the children. We have enlisted the help of the charity Help Vega Baja who will distribute donations among the families most in need this Christmas. WHAT NOW? Let us know that you are committed to taking part and we will email you a free poster to put on display, or on social media to show your clients, employees and friends that you’re helping those most in need this Christmas. Funds raised on the day can be brought to the Costa Blanca People, Kosta Kitchens or other selected outlets (to be confirmed) on Monday 16th December.

Learn about the history and traditions of Orihuela The Councillor for Tourism, Mariola Rocamora, has announced the dates of the next series of the popular Theatrical Walks and Themed Routes of Orihuela, due to take place in November and December. GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP After an eventful last week for the pound, this one was a little quieter in terms of UK economic data. The only thing for investors to note was the falling of Rightmove's house price index by 1.3% to a level 0.3% higher on the year. Sellers were "deterred by lacklustre price growth and political uncertainty". In addition, the CBI's Industrial Trends Survey found manufacturers' order books rebounding in October from a nineyear low, however this wasn’t enough to ruffle any feathers as it still remained below the long-run average. Finally, public sector borrowing rose to a five-year high. Most are expecting this figure to climb even further in the wake of the election, following this week’s spending pledges from all parties. Politics continued to dominate the week, with the main event being Tuesday’s televised date between Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn. The showdown failed to live up to its hype, however, with neither man emerging on top at the end. The effect on the pound was minimal, and did little to dissuade or encourage investors’ current expectations of a Conservative majority victory on December 12th. Overall, the pound had a positive week, however, gaining an average of 0.3% and losing out only to the Swedish krona.

EUR There wasn’t much to excite the euro either this week, particularly in comparison to last week’s avoidance of a German recession. The threat of this was extinguished entirely this week, as third quarter growth was confirmed at 0.1% this morning. Economic data across Euroland put headline inflation at 0.7% with the core measure, excluding energy, food, alcohol and tobacco, slightly higher at 1.1% on the month. While construction output increased by 0.7% in September, it was down 0.7% on last year. Positive news was delivered by consumer confidence improving to 7.2, well above its long-term average of -10.6. The ECB delivered their Financial Stability Review with a fearsome tone. They warned that financial risks are building and that the bank's low interest rate policy "may encourage excessive risk-taking by some nonbank financial institutions and highly leveraged non-financial corporations". This follows last month’s ECB meeting where considerable unease and dispute within the Governing Council over the relaxed monetary policy was revealed. At the end of the week, the euro is almost unchanged against the pound and added half a US cent. On average, it gained 0.2% against the other major currencies.

New rubbish collection trucks for the coast The Mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana and the Councillor for Street Cleaning, Dámaso Aparicio, have taken delivery of four new rubbish collection trucks, two of which are destined for Orihuela Costa. The new trucks have been bought in order to improve the service offered across the municipality and are the first new vehicles purchased for this purpose since 2008 at a cost of 752,373.08 euros. “The trucks incorporate technical and technological improvements such as new geolocation systems, have considerable energy savings and low pollution emissions, will save on repairs and on leasing of vehicles in summer, as well as improving the working conditions of staff”, the Mayor explained. Two trucks are side-loading and two rear-loading of different capacities and a saving of 147,576.52 euros means that "it has been possible to tender the purchase of a fifth side-loading truck that is expected to be put into service for next summer," said the Councillor for Street Cleaning. It is planned to allocate two vehicles to the coast, one with a side load and the other a rear one; one to the city and the other to the districts.

The current Municipal Service fleet is composed of 17 collection trucks so the addition of these five new trucks means a third of the fleet has been renewed. The objective, the Councillor explained, is to be able to improve the service and to do that we clearly needed to improve the materials, as well as personnel resources. "We want to maintain the commitment acquired to improve the service, highlighting the investment made in the last

two years amounting to more than 1,200,000 euros," said Bascuñana. The geo-location device will enable real-time data from trucks. This management system will allow full control of the fleet, to organise routes, while controlling the speed of the vehicles on the road and managing the drivers' schedules. It will also have a record of mileage, hours of use, maintenance history and preinstallation of a container weighing system.

Are Your Savings Still In The UK? M

any people who have moved to Spain do not want to bring all their savings and investments with them to this country. Spanish banks do not have a great track record and then there is currency question – Sterling or convert to Euros? One of the main problems with keeping your money in the UK, is a lack of adviser to keep an eye on your investments and switch funds when the need arises. Your UK financial adviser should not continue to work on your behalf if you are living as a Spanish tax resident. Another problem is that UK based savings like ISA’s, Premium Bonds and other NS&I products are not suitable for Spanish residents. As a Spanish tax resident there are a number or products offered by some of the worlds’ largest financial institutions specifically tailored to meet your investment needs. Indeed, one such provider, Prudential International, have a Spanish tax compliant savings bond that outperforms the UK equivalent simply because of the taxation treatment. Here at Seagate Wealth we understand that many ex‐pats do not wish to bring their money to Spain and for that reason we work with a number of product providers to ensure their money works as hard as possible with minimum risk. The Prudential savings bond offers clients a way to grow their money virtually tax‐free, with no need to report on their annual tax return or the Modelo 720. The other major benefit is the money is not held here in Spain, but in the Republic of Ireland. The Seagate team has a wealth of experience in providing advice on all aspects of savings and investment options. If you have an investment, but no adviser, we can help to get your portfolio back on track. For a free no‐obligation chat with a UK qualified adviser, call 965 704 338 or email: contact@seagatewealth.es

Gardening robot Scientists have created a green-fingered robot that can prune roses and trim bushes, making light work of gardening chores. Trimbot uses mapping technology to find its way around the garden and performs horticultural tasks with its advanced cutting tools. Developers fitted five pairs of cameras and a flexible robotic arm to an automated lawnmower, made by electronics company Bosch. They created algorithms that enable the robot to compare overgrown bushes with ideal final shapes as it trims, and it can prune roses by pinpointing the exact part of each plant’s stem that should be cut. The team behind the Trimbot project, co-ordinated by University of Edinburgh researchers, said prototypes could be used to maintain communal green spaces, support farmers and help people with mobility issues tend their gardens. Professor Bob Fisher, from the university’s School of Informatics, said: “Getting the robot to work reliably in a real garden was a major feat of engineering. “The eight partner teams developed new robotics and 3D computer vision technology to enable it to work outdoors in changing lighting and environmental conditions.” The four-year project was funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 programme and involved scientists from Bosch and universities in the Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland.

Cyclist Training Proposal by the DGT The modern road network is increasingly being shared by different forms of transport. Although the road has never been the priority domain of the motorcar, as automobiles get bigger and faster, the risk to the more vulnerable is greater, but on these shared spaces it is crucial to exercise an equal amount of respect and responsibility.

DGT, to take the first steps towards an educational process aimed at cyclistsand, more specifically, those groups for which this type of training would prove more useful.

In recent years we have seen a tragic increase in the number of fatal and serious incidents involving cyclists. Motorcyclists too have seen an increase in the number of serious incidents, which is why the DGT, Spain’s traffic authority, has already said that they are developing campaigns which not only focus on the car, van and truck drivers, but also on the motorcyclists themselves to act in a responsible manner. Plans are now being discussed to adopt a similar stance towards cyclists, that of respect and responsibility.

As the Director General, Pere Navarro, has stated on more than one occasion, the DGT considers the improvement of road safety in the city, and of vulnerable groups, such as cyclists and motorcyclists as a priority. The use of the bicycle and motorcycle has grown, and will grow even more in the future, driven by the proliferation of business models related to logistics, such as food delivery services, and online sales. Understanding this evolution of mobility in cities, we will also understand to whom this cycling training of the DGT is aimed. The DGT is preparing a series of actions, focused on training, and aimed at improving road safety in cities and protecting vulnerable groups. The objective of the DGT's cycling training is to provide theoretical training to bicycle users. For this, a whole series of actions will be promoted that initially start from online training courses. Courses that will be open to anyone who wants to participate in them. As anticipated by the DGT, cycling

Although in its early stages, the DGT is investigating the possibility of a training regime for cyclists, which may well include a test and, although nothing has been confirmed, a licence to ride. Cyclist training according to the DGT is an "experimental line of action". The DGT will not require cycling training and, in fact, initially this training will be introduced as a pilot. The Educational Intervention Unit has already received the first instructions of the Directorate of Training and Road Education of the

Cyclist training will initially be an experimental project and, of course, not mandatory, but accessible to anyone who wants to participate in the scheme through online courses.

training will not only focus on the most basic regulation and road safety training. The DGT also wants to focus these courses on bicycle tuning, riding and maintenance. As we indicated, despite being open to anyone who wants to participate, the cycling training is aimed primarily at urban cyclists and those who make use of the bicycle in their daily work, collectives such as riders from companies such as Deliveroo , Balloon,

P ROF T OLDOS

SUN SOLUTIONS

Uber Eats, Just Eat, and so on. These are probably the most vulnerable groups and those who, unlike sports cyclists, who usually have high training in the use and maintenance of the bicycle, require greater support in training. The DGT is also taking very similar steps aimed motorcyclists, even offering 4 driving licence points to bikers who voluntarily participate in the road safety training courses proposed by the DGT in collaboration with

motorcyclist associations and driving schools. We also know that the DGT is now in the final stages of legislative change that will control the use of electric scooters and other forms of transport that fall under the umbrella of urban transport, as each of these elements is crucial in the development of a sustainable road network, but must be used in a safe way. Welcome to Fuerteventura

Arrive and discover a pristine coastline with emerald green waters and over 150 km of white sand beaches. You’re in paradise and bathed in sunshine and relaxing negative ions from the sea breeze. The coast and the spectacular volcanic landscapes are why the island is a Biosphere Reserve. Close your eyes and when you open them you’re a new person. A perfect moment to grab a board and hit the clear water. Or to explore the island’s cuisine in its villages. Try the fresh fish, wrinkly potatoes and the

Designation of Origin cheeses. Fuerteventura lies just 100km from the African coast and there are striking similarities not only with the landscape, but also the houses, with their North African-style flat roofs for collecting rainfall. In other ways, Fuerteventura emulates its neighbour Lanzarote, only with more colours. Its volcanoes resemble piles of saffron, chilli and coriander, surreal triangles of exotic spices. Most visitors, however, are more interested in mastering the waves and the wind than

contemplating the abstract aesthetics of the scenery. The second-largest island in the archipelago (after Tenerife), Fuerteventura has year-round sunshine and the biggest and best beaches in the Canaries. The main tourist resorts lie at opposite ends of the island. At the northern tip is Coralejo, beloved by British sun-seekers. While deep down south lies Morro Jable, largely frequented by Germans and a markedly staider place. The island was declared a Unesco Biosphere Reserve in 2009.

I rushed into it

Meltdown

I’ve been widowed six months. Spain was our dream and we had 12 happy years in Javea. After my wife passed, my family, who live in England wanted me to move in with them. It was my wife's dearest wish that I shouldn’t be alone afterwards, and so I made the move. My son and daughter-in-law are very kind - I have my own room, and the grandchildren are delightful, but I haven’t settled. I think I perhaps rushed into things. I miss Spain, but don’t want to hurt their feelings. I still have a house there.

On a recent family holiday, I was very troubled when my wife appeared to have a major meltdown. She cried hysterically at the Airport when our youngest was playing up and not doing as he was told. It was a complete over-reaction, she was in floods of tears and said she couldn’t cope any more. She was quiet for a few days but towards the end of the holiday she relaxed a bit. We have four children, all under 12 and I think the strain of being a working mum gets to her sometimes. What can I do to help? Working mums need a medal in my book. I would think getting four children ready and packed for a family holiday would be stressful enough, but this might be something that has been building up over time. How much help does she get at home with everything? Is she doing the lions share? If so, it’s time to split the chores and give her some time to herself every week. Superwoman sometimes needs Superman to fly in and save her.

I am sure if you had a heart to heart with your family, and told them what you have told me that they would understand. It can be wiser not to make any big life changing decisions after a bereavement, and the advice is to wait a good 12 months before doing anything like moving. You still have your house, and so you could certainly say you want to spend some time in Spain, to think about what you want to do next.

Spain court calls Ryanair fees ‘abusive’ Church under fire for Phil A Spanish court has ruled that Ryanair’s recently introduced policy of charging customers for items of carry-on baggage is “abusive” and contravenes both Spanish and European law. In a case brought by a passenger who had been hit by a €20 fine when boarding a plane in Madrid earlier this year, a judge in the mercantile court sided with the passenger in a ruling that was made public this week. The judge ordered Ryanair to return the €20 to the passenger, claiming that airlines cannot charge for a “suitcase whose dimensions and weight could perfectly be transported in the cabin”. It was just one year year ago Ryanair when introduced controversial new charges for handluggage to be carried on board - anything larger than a handbag or small rucksack with dimensions of 40cm x 20cm x 25cm would be chargeable by either paying for ‘priority boarding’ and bringing your handluggage on board, or paying for handluggage to be stowed in the hold. However, Ryanair insisted this week that the ruling would have no impact on its fares as it would continue to charge for carry-on baggage items above its lower size limit. “This ruling will not affect Ryanair’s baggage policy, as it misquoted the European Court of Justice (ECJ) and misinterpreted the airlines’ commercial freedom to determine the size of their cabin baggage,” Ryanair said in a statement. Having paid €35.69 for the flight in January from Madrid to Brussels, the claimant attempted to board with a handbag and a small suitcase, which fitted in the overhead baggage space

Collins lookalike baby Jesus

and did not weigh more than 10kg. However, when boarding she was told she had to pay extra as she had not bought a Priority ticket. Ryanair did not contest these basic facts of the case. In her reasoning, the Madrid judge said that Spanish transport regulations oblige airlines to include an allowance for cabin baggage within the air fare charged. The judge also cited a 2014 ruling by the European Court of Justice in a case involving budget airline Vueling, which stipulated that carry-on baggage is “an indispensable element of the transport of passengers and, as such, cannot be subject to a price supplement,” as long as bags are within the correct dimensions. Spain’s EFE news agency reported that the ruling cannot be appealed against as the time available to lodge an appeal has elapsed without any of the parties involved having done so.

However, it remains unclear what impact the ruling will have after Ryanair’s stated its intention to continue to impose its baggage charges. According to an annual market study published by IdeaWorksCompany, the amount of money earned by Ryanair through supplementary charges such as baggage charges and seat selection fees reached £2.8bn in 2018, more than any other airline outside the main US carriers. In March Italy’s AGCM competition watchdog fined Ryanair €13 million for “deceiving” customers by advertising fares that do not reflect the full price owing to the need to add extra for hand baggage. The body also fined low-cost carrier Wizz Air €1 million for the same reason. However, last month the regional administrative court of Lazio annulled the fines imposed on Ryanair and Wizz Air for their cabin bag policies.

A Mexican church’s new statue of Baby Jesus has gone viral thanks to its uncanny - and entirely unintentional resemblance to musician Phil Collins. The La EpifanÍa del Señor church in the central Mexican state of Zacatecas first made headlines after setting the potential new record for the biggest baby Jesus statue in the world. Speaking to Central European News, the church’s pastor Reverend Humberto Rodriguez revealed how he had originally requested the construction of a statue that would “fit the church” only to find the sculptor had taken his request a little too literally. “There is a space of between 26 feet between the ceiling and the floor and I ordered a statue measuring 21 feet, but I never intended to make it the biggest

baby Jesus statue in the world,” he said. It beats the current record for a Baby Jesus statue, which reportedly stands at 16 feet tall and 661 pounds. While the church has contacted Guinness World Records to confirm the record, the statue has begun to attract attention from fans on Twitter, and subsequently The New York Post for its striking resemblance to Phil Collins in his 1980s heyday. The work of sculptor Roman Salvador, the statue is made from fiberglass, resin, automotive paste and automotive paint. Unfortunately, the decision to include a longer tuft of hair has seen many draw comparisons between the giant Baby Jesus and the former Genesis drummer and frontman from back in the day.

Two Amata Christmas Fairs with real Crafts If you want to buy a few really nice and original presents for people who matter, you could do worse than go to one of the two Craft Fairs that Amata will be holding in Altea (from 5 till 8 December) and Jávea (6, 7 and 8 December). Real craft fairs run by real craft people who sell only what they make themselves. They can even make something specially for you, if you can’t find what you are looking for!

Altea Altea is known as a very artistic town with lots of resident artists and a really lovely old town, but the fair will be held in the modern part of town, in front of the Town Hall (parallel to the main road N332 but 100 yards inland). Some 30 craft people will gather there with all sorts of original work. Pottery, glasswork, wooden and soft toys, leather, patchwork, design jewelry and all the other special stuff visitors to an Amata fair have come to expect. And of course the typical delecacies of Christmas time, cheeses and sausages and even a stall with mulled wine. There will also be a small tavern with barbeque and a stall offering waffles, crèpes, hot chocolate or mulled wine.

December are Bank holidays!) will be in the Port of Jávea. In a beautiful setting on the sea side promenade some twenty stalls will be set up around an enormous Christmas tree. Every stall is offering something different and as all participants are real craft people, they bring their tools along so they can make small changes or personalize a chosen item, and can even accept special orders if you don't find what you are looking for. Some artesans will be at work in their stalls, so you can see with how much love and patience every item is made. Here Sergio will play well known (Christmas) melodies on his violin and potter José will bring his wheel and offers you the chance to make your own little bowl or vase. This fair opens on the Friday morning, 6 December, and the opening times for the three days are from 11 am continuously till 8 pm, although on Sunday they close at 6 pm.

Every Saturday and Sunday morning If you can't visit these two markets on the "puente de diciembre", you can go to the Port of

WHY NOW IS A GREAT TIME TO SELL YOUR HOME Rebecca Serwotka Rebecca Serwotka - Your favourite local property expert, of Inmobiliaria Real Estate Agents in Ciudad Quesada & published author of “Moving Forward - 25 Essential Rules For Buying & Selling Real Estate Without Going Crazy.” Request your FREE copy today!Featured on Best Buy Spain - Property TV.

As December is fast approaching, many homeowners think that they should wait to put their home on the market for sale until Spring, as buyers will be too busy preparing for Christmas. This is not true! Not only will you be helping other homeowners sell their homes before yours, due to the fact that buyers won’t even have the opportunity of looking at yours if you’re not on the market in the first place, but buyers love walking through a home that has the smells of the season from biscuits baking in the oven, to pine scented candles. Some properties actually show better during Winter. Especially if they’re South facing. Winter sun purchasers often have “South facing,” at the top of their wish list! Buyers that visit this area during the winter months are generally, serious purchasers. They are usually the type of people that don’t have the chance to take the time off during the rest of the year. Families especially, often search for holiday homes

during the school holidays. Or if your property is currently on the market, and you’re tempted to remove it until January, find your willpower and stay the course. There is always lower inventory during the Winter. If you wait until Spring to list your property for sale, you’ll be competing with everyone else that has that very same opinion. You don’t want to be competing with your price! Low inventory (fewer properties on the market for sale) = higher price. High inventory = lower price. Remember, your home won’t ever sell, if it’s not on the market! Selling your home? Enjoy the journey!

Due to a tremendous year of home sales, we are in need of more properties to sell. If you’re ready to sell your home, or have been on the market for sale with no offers, contact me today on 966 718 392 or email: sales@homes4u.es. We ARE the resale specialists. “We sell houses! It’s what we do, it’s all we do!” “It’s what we’re good at!" See our advert in the centre pages of this newspaper. www.homes4u.es

Anyone can have a scented sweet pea by their back door, or a window box of dahlias flowering for months on end. You don't need a greenhouse, fancy lights or heaters, or any more space than a windowsill to get started. That's the inspiring premise of the book The Flower Garden: How to Grow Flowers From Seed by Clare Foster, the garden editor of House & Garden

magazine, with dreamy plant pin-up photographs by Sabina Rüber. It's ideal for anyone who loves flowers but doesn't want to spend too much on them, from experienced gardeners to eco-minded millennials who cut their teeth on house plants and are now turning to their outdoor spaces for the first time.

Own your own Irish island An island in County Donegal, Ireland Rathlin O Birne - is on the market €75,000. The private lands come with two lighthouse cottages and even has its work working lighthouse. The property went on the market earlier this year and surprisingly, is still on the market. The media quickly picked up on the story not only because of the stunning setting but also

because of the property’s low cost as The Sun put it “is less than the cost of most one-bedroom apartments throughout Ireland.” The cottages have six bedrooms and the only drawback is that the lighthouse does not come with the property. It is a fully functional, remotely controlled lighthouse, operated and managed by the Commissioners of Irish Lights.

Albanian trafficking gang arrested Guardia Civil have smashed an Albanian trafficking gang and arrested nine people. Officers uncovered the gang, which illegally smuggled immigrants into the United Kingdom from Spain, after a lengthy investigation. The gang, eight Albanians and one Brazilian, smuggled people into the UK by boat, using ferries and commercial ships departing from ports along the north and east coasts of Spain, including Valencia and Castellón. During recent raids when the arrests took place, officers also seized phones, computers, bank cards, currency cards and several passports and ID documents from a variety of countries. The operation began in early 2018, when the police detected a considerable increase of Albanian immigrants attempting to enter the UK illegally on ferries departing the port of Santurce and others along the Cantabrian coast. As investigations expanded, officers were able to identify that the criminal organisation was made up of two working cells – one operating in the north of Spain and another that worked in many other provinces to provide the passengers – either directly

from Albania or through contacts with intermediaries in Spain. The second cell looked after the infrastructure necessary for the people to live under the radar in Spain until finally being brought to the port for their final journey by boat. The passengers were brought on board as stowaways in trailers, containers, caravans, and the boots of vehicles. Ports used by the gang were Santander, Vigo, Ferrol, Ribadeo, Gijón, Avilés, Pasajes as well as Valencia and Castellón. Those arrested were charged with a number of alleged crimes

help everyone to move forward. The Families Volunteers prepare food parcels with a range of items partially provided by the European Food Bank which is administered by the Spanish Dept of Agriculture. The charity also provides hygiene products for families, soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, toiletries, nappies, bleach and other family products. Volunteers are always needed - any contribution you make, your time and skill could be just what is needed. Reach Out says, “We want more people to enjoy volunteering and there are lots of ways to get involved. Whatever role you choose, you will make a real difference to the life of someone in crisis. From having a cup of coffee, to helping sort clothes for our charity shops, drive or cook we could not operate without people like you, giving your support & time.” Working together to help people move forward. The centre in Torrevieja contains offices, a canteen, food bank, second hand shop, including a storage and workshop area, and has grown solely from the hard work of all the donors and volunteers, past, present and future.

Although it is now almost two months since the devastating floods experienced in the area, the charity Help at Home Costa Blanca is still helping scores of people in the Almoradi and Orihuela areas - providing them with essentials they need to survive. The serious floods in the north of England were minor in comparison to the devastation which took place in Spain in the worst rainstorm to hit in living memory. What made it far worse was that a reservoir burst, sending millions of litres of water, thick mud and debris into people’s homes. The interior walls of some of the houses were made of materials which disintegrated and there are still people living in the upstairs rooms because downstairs is uninhabitable. Help at Home Costa Blanca span into action immediately news of the devastation hit the TV screens and newspapers. A fund-raising event was

hurriedly organised masterminded by entertainer Stevie Spit at the Emerald Isle in La Florida and supported by other entertainers who gave their time free. The charity organised a stallholder market and the event attracted many hundreds of people, and more than 4,000 euros was raised the charity donating the takings from the two shops, 520 euros, and the takings from the market. Four large van loads of donated items have gone to the affected areas, and this week a fifth has been sent, filed to the roof with furniture, clothes, food and cleaning materials. Money raised has also been spent on providing new school equipment to replace that which was lost. Sylvia Sakir, vice president of the charity and who is also the principal fund raiser, has been working tirelessly to help the estimated 1,300 of the worst-affected people. She said: “I am so very grateful to the

people who have donated so much. We were inundated with donated items and the help that people living on or near the coast has been very much appreciated by those who have lost everything.” Sylvia added that what surprised her was that many people who donated said they had no idea that Help at Home CB was so far reaching a charity – believing it was merely running a couple of charity shops and little more. In fact the charity’s 65 or so volunteers look after the needs of about 100 clients – taking them on hospital and doctor visits, helping them with chores in their homes, befriending those who are desperately lonely, helping those who may have legal problems – the help is widespread and comprehensive. One of the latest is that of a mother of three in her 40s who has become paralyzed from the waist down following a procedure in hospital. Volunteers are helping her on a daily basis.

HELP Vega Baja Christmas Fayre HELP Vega Baja (registered charity) is celebrating the festive season with its ever popular Christmas Fayre on the 7th December at the Parroquia Cristo Resucitado church in La Zenia with the fun starting at 10 o’clock. The Christmas Fayre is the charity’s biggest fundraiser and everyone is hoping that this year will be one of the best events yet! All volunteers have been working extremely hard to make sure it is a success and that it is a wonderful day for the whole family. As always there will be a whole host of stalls – bottle stall, tombola, clothes, bric-a-brac, homemade cakes and pastries and so much more. We will have singing by the enthusiasticals and possibly our very own Valerie and we are hoping that Charity Sales coordinator will again this year be undertaking some of her challenges to raise funds. With the support of local

businesses (full details on our website), we have a tremendous raffle this year with tickets already on sell. A glorious hamper, 43 inch television and so much more. Tickets just 1 euro per ticket. 2019 has been a particularly busy year for the charity with much of their efforts being unexpectedly towards supporting families to rebuild their lives following the awful disaster in September with the floods. Funds have been raised and the support is continuing. Whilst there has been much publicity about the terrific work that is going on in various areas, it is also important to remember that other people continue to turn to the charity for support and funds are therefore even more necessary than usual. Please come along and support HELP Vega Baja, have a truly fabulous day and grab yourself some tremendous bargains!

Emma Watson on turning 30 In her new cover story with British Vogue, Emma Watson admits that this year has been "tough" because she "had all these ideas" about what her life was supposed to be like at this age. “I was like, ‘Why does everyone make such a big fuss about turning 30? This is not a big deal,'" she told the magazine. “Cut to 29, and I’m like, ‘Oh my God, I feel so stressed and anxious. And I realize it’s because there is suddenly this bloody influx of subliminal messaging around. If you have not built a home, if you do not

have a husband, if you do not have a baby, and you are turning 30, and you’re not in some incredibly secure, stable place in your career, or you’re still figuring things out… There’s just this incredible amount of anxiety.” Despite these societal pressures and her own internal struggle, Watson says she's happy being a single almost 30year-old woman. “I am dating, as in not one specific person, but I am going on dates... My friends are really good at setting me up. Even things that haven't

worked out romantically, some of my best friends are people I've gotten set up on a date with... I never believed the whole ‘I’m happy single’ spiel,” she said. “I was like, ‘This is totally spiel.’ It took me a long time, but I’m very happy [being single]. I call it being self-partnered.” On top of all of this, Watson also opened up about her struggles with her fame and how it's led her to seek help in therapy. "That's another thing I've sat in therapy and felt really really guilty about to be honest is like, why me?" she said of her selection at the age of 9 to be in the Potter films. "Somebody else would have

enjoyed and wanted this aspect of it more than I did. I struggle with, I've wrestled a lot with the guilt around that. I should be enjoying this more. I should be more excited, and I'm actually really struggling." She also talked about how she kept herself grounded when her fame reached the highest levels. "Part of my sense of peace within myself has been remembering my identity as, 'I'm someone's daughter. I'm my mother's daughter, I am my father's daughter. I am a sister. I belong to a family. I come from a place. I have roots,'" she explained.

Couples that dine out together, stay together The Dine Together to Stay Together Report, commissioned by restaurant booking portal Bookatable.co.uk, found that 40 per cent of couples struggle to make quality time for each other, and a similar percentage of married couples (41 per cent) admit they cannot remember the last time they went out together on a date.

Shockingly, the research study highlighted that the majority of couples (78 per cent) who go out together are happier in their marriage and less likely to separate.

When couples do spend quality time together, dining out together is a favourite date night pastime with 27 per cent of British couples making it out for dinner with each other at least once a week. When asked about dining out together, more than half (53 per cent) felt that it was the key to a successful long lasting relationship and 72 per cent feel it provides a great backdrop to spending quality time as a couple. Furthermore, the majority of those who regularly dine out together (69 per cent) report they feel happier and less likely to separate. Whilst it’s clear that British couples are aware of the importance of making time to see their other half, a third (30 per cent) felt that long working hours affected the feasibility of a

Two-thirds of couples who are in a relationship (64 per cent) do not have a regular night out with their partner and just four percent admit to having a designated Date Night with their other half. Over a quarter (27 per cent) felt they were too strapped for time to have a regular night out with their partner. According to the study, 15 per cent of new parents felt particularly time poor and were unable to commit to regular time with their partner and 13 per cent admit their relationship suffers because of this, while married couples were the least likely to make time for a regular night out with their other half with a quarter of those married for over ten years (25%) not seeing the need to have one. Two thirds (60 per cent) said that they considered dinner out a more “worthy” date night in comparison to going to the movies, and half (51 per cent) felt it more “worthy” than staying in with a takeaway as you get to spend more quality time together. Those who do date night with their partner say it has made them try out new activities (50 per cent) and be more expansive with their repertoires when dining out (66 per cent). 40 per cent of couples admit that their relationship has led to them trying new foods.

A galaxy of Michelin stars for Spain and Portugal Michelin has just announced the selection for the Michelin Guide Spain & Portugal 2019, with 30 new starred restaurants between the two countries. "For the first time, we have decided to celebrate the launch of the Michelin Guide in Portugal and this is no coincidence," says Gwendal Poullennec, international director of the Michelin Guides. "In recent years, talented young chefs have emerged, using their creativity to revisit traditional Portuguese dishes. They are able to transform high quality local products using their know-how and ingenuity." Gala attendees tasted dishes from seven-starred restaurants in the area—Belcanto, Fortaleza do Guincho, Alma, Eleven, Feitoria, Loco and Lab by Sergi Arola. The big winners in the category of two stars in Spain are twins Sergio and Javier Torres's Cocina Hermanos Torres in Barcelona, where the cuisine is integrated into the culinary experience of the diners through a large open kitchen; El Molino de Urdániz in the Navarrese city of Urdaitz, where chef David Yárnoz maintains a creative proposal exalting the local products of Navarre; and the original restaurant Ricard Camarena de València, which is as surprising in its aesthetics—it is located in the ‘Bombas Gens Art Center’—as it is by its gastronomy, which follows a process of sourcing via local

producers, in addition to the produce grown in its own garden. New one-starred restaurants in the 2019 edition are restaurants with their own personality, such as Eneko Bilbao (Bilbao), Oria (Barcelona), eMe Be Garrote (Donostia/San Sebastián) and Terra restaurant in S'Agaró, in the province of Girona, which are under the leadership of gastronomic figures such as Eneko Atxa, Martín Berasategui or Paco Pérez. The team of Michelin inspectors also draws attention to the Costa Blanca, specifically the province of Alicante, a region focused on haute cuisine without cutting links with tradition. The beautiful and touristy town of Calp (Calpe) gains a position as a culinary destination with the incorporation of new one-starred restaurants Beat and Orobianco. The following restaurants have also received a Michelin star: La Barra de Carles Abellán in Barcelona; Etxanobe Atelier in Bilbao; Trivio in Cuenca; Bagá in Jaén; LÚ Cocina y Alma in Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz); Pablo in León, which defends avant-garde cuisine based on local, natural and seasonal products; Ikaro in Logroño (La Rioja); El Xato from La Nucía (Alicante); A Tafona in Santiago de Compostela (A Coruña); El Molino de Alcuneza, a charming establishment located in a hamlet of Sigüenza

(Guadalajara); and finally, the Cancook restaurant in Zaragoza, which is based on a modern and creative gastronomy, able to conquer and to entertain, but always with a perfect harmony between the products and respect of the seasonal flavors. Low and no alcohol market grows in quality and availability The rise in availability and quality of low and no alcohol drinks over the last couple of years is very much on the rise. People are becoming more health conscious, sober curious and a 2018 study found 30 per cent of young people never drink at all. It’s no surprise then that the “low and no” movement has grown exponentially in that time; no longer are teetotallers stuck with a soda and lime or dodgy alcohol-free beer. As the market for no and low alcohol expands, so does consumer demand for quality. Flavour is key. Instead of fruity, simple alternatives, people are looking for flavour… they expect something balanced and interesting. Also, appearance is important; they don't want to be

singled out so non-alcoholic cocktails need to be indistinguishable from their alcoholic siblings Believe it or not, there are zero proof spirits that look, smell and taste the part and with local bars on the Costa Blanca struggling to keep the likes of ‘Gin Sin’ (non alcoholic gin) on the shelves, there is a surge in non drinkers seeking an alternative to simply sparkling water. Don’t bother with alcohol-free wines – you’ll be wasting your money. But, there are alcohol free ‘spirits’ that are very much worth a second look. Stryyk Not Gin There have been a lot of alcohol-free gin contenders coming on the market and we’re not sold on all of them; there tends to be a cloying sweetness and not enough of that signature “burn” you crave from a real gin. However, this new Not Gin is sugar free and the herby, botanical flavours of coriander, sage, basil and that classic juniper come through in bounds making it a good pretender to a London Dry Gin. It’s zero proof but we thought it was quite convincing as a gin; and certainly more so than other more expensive alcohol free gins we’ve tried. PS. we used a higher spirit to tonic ratio than we’d usually pour and it

hit the spot. Celtic Soul spirit Dark spirits are having their turn for an alcohol-free makeover now and this latest one is a pretty impressive attempt. It smells fabulous: smokey, peaty and downright whisky-like (though they don’t bill it as any one spirit in particular). The taste doesn’t quite deliver the fiery burn you’ve come to expect from the whisky aroma – instead think vanilla, spices and a subtle woodiness – but it makes a great alternative to booze when mixed with ginger ale and garnished with a twist of your chosen citrus. It’s completely alcohol free too. Nine Elms No. 18 For something completely different, take a punt on Nine Elms No. 18. It’s hard to categorise –it’s not a wine dupe, even though it looks the part – and is an infusion of 20 botanicals and four berries designed to be drunk with food (they suggest rich, savoury dishes). We found it to be an unusual one; there’s the full body you’d find in a wine, and lots of the complexity too, but there’s also the bitterness of some aperitifs. Importantly it’s not sugary sweet or anything like a juice – thankfully, considering the steep price. Try it as a straight pour with dinner, or mixed in cocktails.

Robbie Williams pledged to take Liam Gallagher down. The singer, 45, branded his longtime frenemy a "school bully" in a scathing tirade about their ongoing feud. Outspoken Robbie confessed he has to get "even" with someone and cited his friendship with Gary Barlow as an example of this. The pop star said he was gearing himself up for a fight with his frenemy Liam yet he also divulged he admired him in the same breath. Robbie Williams said "In the past I've been obsessed by getting even with people - and Gary [Barlow] was one of them. We had a sibling rivalry. We were the original Liam and Noel.

"As for Liam, I admire him. He is the voice of a generation, the last of a dying breed, as pop stars are so boring these days. "But I still want to fight him. He represents a school bully to me and I would like to take the bully down." Despite once being friends in the 90s, the pair have since fallen out and continued to have take low blows at each other.

Harry Styles has denied taking drugs while performing with One Direction. The 25-year-old singer has admitted that he 'experimented' with illegal substances after quitting the band, saying that he bit the end of his tongue off in Malibu while high on mushrooms during the recording of his new album, Fine Line. Harry reflected on his time in One Direction on Zane Lowe's Apple radio show on Friday, saying he avoided drugs for fear of risking the band's success. Since leaving the band in 2016, Harry has said that he then felt safe enough to experiment He told Lowe: "When I was in the band, it was like, to me it felt like it was so much bigger than any of us that I kind of felt like, I'm not going to be the one who f***** it up. "So I was like, now is the time in my life when you probably go out and experiment and do this and you take this and you do that and that's what you do with your friends. "And I was like, I'm not going to be the guy who messes it up. So I was like, I'm not going to do any of that stuff." Long live the NEW Queen! If they look like they're drying out half way, spray them again with a bit more low calorie cooking spray.

Gravy Gravy is just the best thing to put all over any slimming-friendly roast dinner, whether you’re counting calories or following a diet plan like Weight Watchers or Slimming World. 1 medium Carrots peeled and cut into small dice 1/2 Onion cut into small dice 1 medium Potato peeled and cut into rough dice 2 Stock Pots chicken or beef depending on your choice of meat 4 drops Gravy Browning you can add more or less if you like 600 ml Water Place the carrot, onion and potato in a pan and add the water. Bring to the boil and simmer for about 25 minutes or until the veg is cooked. The

calorie cooking spray and fry the red onion until it starts to brown then add the balsamic. Turn off the heat, but leave the pan on the stove Mash the sausages in a bowl, add the sage, cooked red onion & egg. Cauliflower Cheese Perhaps not quite as you know it, this Cauliflower Cheese is packed with flavour, texture, and cheese! 1 Large Cauliflower 2 Red Onions 2 Leeks 1 1/2 Small Pots Very Low Fat Cottage Cheese 1 Vegetable Stock Pot 40 g Low Fat Cheddar Cheese grated, per portion Low Calorie Cooking Spray Start by chopping the cauliflower into florets, and the leeks and onions into slices. Put the cauliflower into a pan of boiling water and cook until tender. Meanwhile, fry the leeks and onions in low calorie cooking spray until they're nice, soft and golden. Once the cauliflower is cooked, drain and combine the two in a pot and mix, along with the vegetable stock pot. If you overcook the cauliflower, you'll find that it might go a little mushy. Don't worry, it'll still taste good! (I sometimes find that mixing the vegetable stock pot in a little bit of boiling water in a mug until it's a thickish paste is better) Once all that is combined, add the cottage cheese and mix until it's... mixed in! Add to a dish and sprinkle over the cheese. Put under the grill until the cheese is golden brown. Eat and enjoy!

Mini Christmas Cakes 50 grams Defatted Almond Flour such as Sukrin Almond Flour 50 grams Mixed Dried Fruit 5 Eggs 1 tsp Baking Powder 25 ml Sherry 2 tbsp Black Treacle 4 tbsp Granulated Sweetener 2 tsp Mixed Spice Low Calorie Cooking Spray For the Icing 25 grams Icing Sugar 2 tsp Water Preheat the oven to 160°C. In a small bowl add the sherry and mixed fruit. In a large mixing bowl add the almond flour, eggs, black treacle, sweetener, mixed spice and baking powder and mix well until fully incorporated. Once the mixed fruit has plumped up, add it, and the remaining sherry from the bowl into the cake mix. Stir well. Spray a silicone muffin tin with Low calorie cooking spray and spoon in the cake mixture, making sure to evenly distribute the fruit. Bake for 25 minutes. Remove from the oven, take out from the silicone cake tin carefully and place on a wire rack to cool. Meanwhile, in a small bowl, mix the icing sugar and water to form an icing. Once the cakes are completely cool, drizzle with icing and serve!

Reaching retirement age has many wonderful benefits. You can finally relax, put strict working regimes behind you, do all the things you always planned… but after a while you discover there’s this thing called boredom creeping in. Yes, it’s lovely to sit in the sun by the pool with a G and T and a good book – when you’re on holiday. But when you live in the sun, it soon loses its appeal. So what to do? If you have reached the stage of being at a loose end, maybe depressed or lonely, it’s time to take up a hobby. There are dozens to choose from, and for many taking up art and photography are the most creative, and therefore good for body and soul. Suzanne Stokes has been teaching recreational

art classes in the Quesada area for 15 years and currently holds two classes a week at Meson Algorfa in Algorfa high street on Monday mornings – and on Thursday mornings at Restaurante La Herradura, next to the REPSOL garage in Los Montesinos. “Classes become more like clubs,” said Suzanne. “Some people have been coming along for years and have amazed themselves at the wonderful work they have been able to produce. I start all beginners off with several weeks of learning to draw, because if you can’t draw, painting successfully is so much more difficult. It doesn’t take long – once you learn to observe properly. After that class members can go on to using

water colour, acrylic or oil painting. Art is amazing therapy. It’s relaxing, and time out from all the other pressures in your life. I have had many people over the years come to class with all manner of physical and mental challenges and without exception they have said things like ‘It’s a day that isn’t all about cancer/arthritis/MS/stroke/anxie ty or depression and many other illnesses.’” Suzanne is also a working artist and her work, together with a selection of fine art prints is for sale at Restaurante La Herradura, Los Montesinos. You can contact her for more information about classes via her website www.suestokes.co.uk or see a selection of her work on www.suestokes.com/store

Statins don’t cause more memory loss claims study Statins can prolong your life if you have heart disease and are commonly prescribed for conditions such as high cholesterol, renal disease or to those at risk of stroke. A new study claims that contrary to popular belief, they aren’t likely to cause you to lose your memory or your cognitive abilities as you get older. Older adults who use statin drugs suffered no more memory loss or mental decline than people of the same age who didn’t take the drugs, according to a study published this week by Australian researchers. Katherine Samaras, an endocrinologist at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Australia and a lead study author, said that statins “aren’t associated with a risk for major adverse health [problems].” “These findings will hopefully go a long way toward reducing consumers’ concerns about memory and cognition from statins, so they don’t stop taking these lifesaving medications,” she said. Small study, reassuring findings Dr. Paul D. Thompson, a leading researcher on statin side effects, said that the study is “reassuring,” but he noted that the study was small and did not involve a randomized population, limiting the implications of the findings. The 6-year observational study of older individuals not suffering from dementia was followed by 2 years of brain volume studies. A total of 1,037 participants ages 70 to 90 took part in the study, including 642 statin users and 395 subjects who had never used the drugs. Statin users in the study had been taking the drugs for an average of 9 years.

Researchers diagnosed and documented the presence of major health issues among the study group, including heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, hypertension and type 2 diabetes. Study participants were categorized by whether they had ever used statins, were using the drugs currently, or never had used statins. Use of specific statin drugs, including simvastatin, pravastatin, and atorvastatin, was also studied, with users again compared to those who never used statin drugs. FDA warning despite studies This isn’t the first study to find a low risk of cognitive impairment associated with statins. In 2013, Johns Hopkins researchers conducted a longterm study that found no evidence that statins caused memory loss or dementia. In fact, this and other studies found that statin drugs may even protect against dementia. Nonetheless, in 2012 the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warning labels on statins to include cautions that the drugs may be linked to memory loss, forgetfulness, and confusion. “There have been rare postmarketing reports of cognitive impairment (e.g., memory loss, forgetfulness, amnesia, memory impairment, confusion) associated with statin use,” according to the FDA. “These reported symptoms are generally not serious and reversible upon statin discontinuation.” The FDA also noted, “Data from the observational studies and clinical trials did not suggest that cognitive changes associated with statin use are common or lead to clinically significant cognitive decline.”

Nonetheless, there have been some concerns raised over statins and the number of people who are prescribed the drugs. A study published last month stated that statins may not be necessary for people with lower heart disease risk. Another study released in April reported that about half of participants failed to lower their cholesterol levels after taking statins for 2 years. Thompson said thousands of people avoid statins because of concerns about side effects such as muscle pain, increased risk of diabetes, and possible cognitive issues. About 5 percent of patients in Thompson’s practice report muscle pain, the most common complaint among statin users. By contrast, Thompson said complaints about cognitive issues are “very rare.” Even people who experience these side effects are probably better off taking statins than not. Studies showing an increase in the number of diabetes cases, for example, found far greater reductions in heart attacks in the same population, Thompson noted. Statins also reduce the risk of stroke by preventing the buildup of cholesterol in the veins that can sometimes break off and migrate to the brain, causing blockages. That, in turn, likely reduces the rate of vascular dementia, Thompson said. “Overall, I think statins are good for preserving brain function,” he said. “We’ve never seen drugs that are this effective. They have changed the practice of cardiology,” said Thompson. “Treatment always has to be done on an individual basis, but community-wide, the benefits of statins far outweigh the risks.”

Relief for neck and shoulder pain After a long day at work, playing golf or bowling many of us experience of neck and shoulder pain. It’s inevitable to feel discomfort after being seated upright for eight or more hours a day and twisting into unnatural sporting positions. Yoga experts recommend that following yoga moves to stretch out our neck and shoulders – and even better you can do then anywhere, in just a few minutes. Firstly, start with a window pane stretch. With both your arms behind your head, grab onto both elbows, forming a rectangle. Move your shoulders and neck to one side

and hold for a nice, deep stretch. Remember to do the same stretch on the other side.

Next, transition into the ear-toshoulder stretch; place your left hand gently over your right ear.

Slowly pull your head to your left shoulder for a deep stretch in the right side on your neck. Repeat the exercise on the opposite side. For the final pose, experts recommend the position known as thread the needle. Start on all fours on a mat, grass or a folded towel, then take your left arm and slide it through the square that your right leg and arm make. As you move your arm through the square, bring your shoulder to the mat for a great stretch in your shoulders and back. As always, remember to repeat on the other side of your body.

Very early childhood impacts child’s obesity risk The harmful effects that obesity can have on children’s health are well known. An ongoing State University of New York at Buffalo study recently published in the journal Obesity is one of the first to explore how mother-infant interaction during feeding and active play influences infant and child obesity. Researchers wanted to find out if parenting style could reduce the risk of obesity in children already at risk due to prenatal exposure to harmful substances. They found that that mothers who showed less emotional warmth during non-feeding-related interactions, like active play when the child was 7 months old, had children who gained excess weight the fastest. This is one of the first studies to look at how familial interactions may affect a child’s appetite and diet. “To our knowledge, there are no studies that examine how non-food, home environment throughout early child development can impact one’s motivation to eat,” said Kai Ling Kong, PhD, co-author of the study. Parental style plays a role in prevention Children with obesity “are more likely to suffer from high blood pressure and high cholesterol; things we would normally associate with adults,” said Dr. Richard Seidman, pediatrician and chief medical officer of L.A. Care Health Plan. “These kids also have an increased risk of breathing and joint problems, not to

mention the psychological and selfesteem issue.” In order to see how parental interactions with children affected their weight, Kong and the team focused on infants whose mothers had smoked, drank, or engaged in other substance misuse, such as marijuana or cocaine,

during pregnancy. Prenatal exposure to any of these substances can subject a fetus to poor nutrition and inadequate blood or oxygen flow that may cause metabolic issues that increase the risk of childhood obesity. Roughly 40 percent of the children in the study were classified as obese at 7 years old. This is almost double the national childhood obesity rate of 18.5 percent. Researchers found that mothers who showed less emotional warmth during interactions like active play when the child was an infant had children who were likely to gain excess weight the fastest. The researchers emphasize that finding ways to promote active play

might be a new and promising way to prevent obesity in high-risk infants. Helping parents learn how to interact positively with a child may help them decrease their risk for having obesity. “A high quality of parenting or parentchild relationship is an aspect of an enriched environment, as robust evidence demonstrates the benefits of high-quality and frequent social interaction on infant cognitive development,” Kong said. “An enriched home environment provides many activities that are alternative to food, and as such, children need not find pleasure in food alone.” What can parents do? • Monitor what your children are eating to prevent unhealthy weight gain. Make sure they have a nutritious breakfast and school lunch every day. • Focus on fruits and veggies, and encourage your kids to try new things. • Exposure to healthy foods is important. Don’t give up after just one try. The more a child is exposed to something, the better the chance they might try it or even enjoy it later. • Limit the amount of fast food your family is eating each week, and try to meal prep for the week if you know you’re going to be busy. • Make sure you have healthy options available at home and at eye level in the refrigerator. Also, you can simply avoid keeping unhealthy options in the kitchen. • Parents should encourage increased physical activity by participating in physical activities with them.

Galaxy S11’s most exciting new features was just teased Samsung announced a 108megapixel camera sensor for smartphones back in mid-August, the Isocell Bright HMX, which was design together with Xiaomi. That very sensor is now rumoured to equip the Galaxy S11 phones next year, which would be a significant upgrade for the Galaxy S line, at least when it comes to megapixels. However, the first phone in the world to rock the 108-megapixel comes from Xiaomi, and the first samples are already here. Xiaomi unveiled the CC9 Pro in China, a phone that was featured in several rumours that preceded this week’s official

announcement. The handset rocks five cameras on the back, including the 108megapixel 7P sensor, as well as a 5-megapixel 5x telephoto lens, 12-megapixel 2x telephoto lens, 20-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens, and 2-megapixel macro camera. This camera phone is only a mid-range device, packing a Snapdragon 730G processor paired with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage — that package will retail for 2,799 yuan (362e) in China. Prices go up to around 452e if you opt for the 8GB/256GB version, which also features an 8P lens system for the 108-megapixel

camera. The Galaxy S11, meanwhile, will feature a next-gen flagship chip, and it’s also rumoured to come in various versions, including models that will feature multiple sensors on the back. The Galaxy S11 might be Samsung’s first phone to pack a periscope camera with 5x zoom, which, coupled with the 108-megapixel sensor, could deliver similar results. That’s assuming, of course, that the Galaxy S11 rumours turn out to be true. Meanwhile, the only smartphone with a camera that surpasses the 100-megapixel mark is the CC9 Pro.

The rise of online Data Brokers Data brokers are corporations that collect huge amounts of personally identifiable information (PII) and package it all together to create ‘profiles’ or ‘listings’ with identifying tags. These tags include things like birthdays, past and recent addresses, and more. Types of personal identifying information (PII) available online can include mobile phone numbers, home address, pictures of people's houses, as well as family member names and ages. Full personal profiles can be purchased from a variety of online data-brokers by anyone with a credit card, often for as little as $0.99 per single search. These information profiles are sold to advertisers, snoopers, marketers, employers, data mining corporations, and large insurance agencies at hefty prices. Even though you aren’t directly involved, and might not even know you have a ‘profile’ on this site, these people are profiting off of your information. In today’s world of big data, it makes sense that large companies would base their interactions with consumers on data. Yet, it also brings up a great deal of questions and concerns about privacy and fairness.

How do data brokers get your information? Data brokers crawl the web searching for information, and use it to build a profile of you. They find this from government and other public records, selfreported information, social media, and other data brokers. Who are these data brokers? There are many data broker sites out there. New data brokers are regularly appearing online, while older data brokers frequently rebrand themselves by creating new websites. The biggest data brokers include Whitepages, BeenVerified, Spokeo, MyLife, and Intelius. Why are data brokers a problem? Data brokers can help to facilitate ID theft, they can ruin job opportunities (or romantic dates), or even provide grounds for discrimination. Most people are aware that our social media or our Google searches are recorded and used for specific advertisement targeting. The darker side of data collection lies in the data you consider to be private. As personally identifiable information shuttles around the world in unsecure data packets,

the risk of skyrockets.

identity

theft

What can you do? Aside from always exercising caution online, there are ways to keep your information private. When a website asks for your information, you don’t have to share it. If you must give it out, use an alias with sites you don’t trust. You can use services like Blur to keep your private information private. When creating security questions for online accounts, use “fake” answers that only you know – anyone can Google your mother’s maiden name, especially if she too is on Facebook. If your information is already out there (which is probably the case) you can use services like DeleteMe to retroactively delete your information and protect it from data brokers. Email clients like Gmail or Yahoo read your emails in order to send you ads. Instead, consider using a client like Fast Mail or Proton Mail, who won’t read your emails. Using an encrypted messaging app, such as Whatsapp, will ensure that only the people who are able to read a conversation are the ones who participated in it.

Europe approves Driver Assistance

The members of the European Union have supported the implementation of two new safety measure that will become mandatory in all new models that leave the factory, starting in 2022. The first system can detect if a driver is paying attention or fatigued, the second will immobilise the vehicle in the event of the driver having consumed alcohol. These new measures are in addition to previously agreed systems that were approved in April, which obliges brands to include emergency braking systems and speed warnings in the standard

equipment of all models, whether passenger cars, commercial vehicles, buses or trucks, since they have proven their effectiveness and contribute to reducing incident rates. Now, these two additional features are to be added to the vehicle specifications. Swedish car manufacturer Volvo is already forging ahead with plans to ensure that nobody loses their life or is seriously injured by a Volvo car and have already vowed that the alcohol detector will be fitted on all new Volvo models in 2020.

Both of the devices were first put to the EU in 2018 but only just seen approval, but when you consider that the statistics claim that the collective improvements will avoid 25,000 deaths and 140,000 serious injuries, it does make one wonder why it took so long. Europe has also given the green light to a modification of the law for manufacturers to install an information recording device, a black box for want of a better phrase, which paves the way for the next technology, more advanced autonomous driving functions .

TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

As we know, folks, seven days is a long time in football. Yes, just seven days ago Mauricio Pochettino was still technically the gaffer at Tottenham, point-blank refusing to resign from his post as Daniel Levy flipped between a long lunch here, a long lunch there and brushed up on his pillow-talk in Portuguese.

to being holed up in a five-star hotel, but this Jose looks relaxed, calm, almost serene and claims to have learned a lot in the last twelve months. That does remain to be seen, of course - it’s easy to turn up to a new job saying how you are a different chap, you love the modern footballer, you understand you have no actual money to spend in the remainder of this decade and that you believe the current squad are top quality because you’ve tried to buy most of them in the past (though nobody here is buying that Jose is a secret Serge Aurier fan).

And now, here we are. A whole week later and Tottenham have a new sheriff in town, an away win tucked under their arm for the first time in quite a while and a spike in Spurs pyjama sales. Is it just me, or does the London-based Jose cut a completely different cloth to the Manchester-based Jose? Maybe it is the comfort of home living as opposed

The real test will be when things have settled down a bit in North London, Mourinho has grown tired of Eric Dier forgetting what colour shirt Spurs are wearing and Aurier refusing to actually defend properly. Maybe we will see a bit of the old Jose then. It wouldn’t surprise me if the guys at Amazon looked at the fixture list and decided that West Ham away was the ideal game for Mourinho to return to the Premier League fold. I mean, they run the club now - don’t they? West Ham away is the perfect match for anyone to get their feet under a new table, and Spurs certainly capitalised before reverting to type in the last 20 minutes. Dele Alli told his brother to take the rest of 2019 off and returned to the field of play, putting in his most Dele Alli like performance of the year. We got an early insight into Jose having Christian Eriksen’s card 100% marked with the fact that the Dane was given a run out at the end (and that is when Spurs started to forget about defending). As for West Ham, the board will have noticed that it is possible to sack a South American no matter how much it costs - and the names of Rafa Benitez and Chris Hughton are starting to echo around the Athletics Stadium. Sean Dyche, possibly because of the slight similarity in colours worn, is also believed to be in the running. Surely the bigger need for the Hammers is a goalkeeper on January 1st? With Fabianski still out then it would probably make sense to pack Roberto off on-loan to the Spanish third division and bring in anyone available instead. Maybe someone better than Jordan Archer though, eh? Yeah, if you don’t instantly know who he is then that is pretty much my point. In the end, this Tottenham win had nothing to do with Jose Mourinho, according to Mr Humble himself. He is a changed man, remember. Although

the mask did slip a little in his opening press conference on Thursday - on one hand, complete humility. On the other, when asked whether losing the Champions League final might have damaged Tottenham more than people could understand Jose simply replied, ‘how would I know? I have never lost a Champions League final!’ Don’t change too much, Jose. And is it worth a punt on Spurs righting those Champions League wrongs now he is in charge? Look, I like Riyad Mahrez as a footballer a lot - but even my dog turned away in disgust when he was allowed to drift on to that left foot and pass Man City’s second into the bottom corner. Don’t give me the whole ‘well it is one thing knowing what he is going to do and another stopping it’ rubbish. Don’t show him inside. Don’t show him inside if Jorginho isn’t really that bothered in closing that space. Just don’t show him inside. Chelsea were superb precisely up until the moment they gave the ball away and six seconds later conceded against the chasing champions. They had more of the ball, they were winning it back quickly and Ngolo Kante, who only seems to score against City, had them ahead.

Liverpool fan in the world will probably think, ‘was that a clear and obvious error’ where even the most impartial Scouser on the planet is adamant it needed to be overturned.

Ole will probably make it to Christmas whilst Mauricio gets some time to go and refresh, but come the time you are sending out your Easter eggs there could well be a new man in the Old Trafford dugout.

Either way, Liverpool are getting the rub of the VAR green at the moment - but will it last for the whole season? If City needed a win to keep Liverpool’s coattails within some kind of grasp, then the same went for Leicester City. Brighton were put to the sword this time as the league’s most-miserly defence kept another clean sheet and sparkled with some of their attacking play. Things are going so well for Jamie Vardy right now that he can miss a penalty, subconsciously convince the ref to take a look on VAR and get a second stab at the cherry due to encroachment. Leicester remain second. Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said that he wasn’t worried that Mr Ed could now go and get Pochettino for £40m less than it would have cost him last season. When Sheffield United went 2-0 up, it would have been great to find out his thoughts there and then. There was a certain irony in the statistic that told us Man United had spent more on Blades fan Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka than Chris Wilder’s club had spent on players in their entire history only for it to be three players who cost the Red Devils the grand total of nothing to get them back in the game at 3-2.

It tells you all you need to know when a 96th-minute equaliser for Arsenal at home to Southampton is considered a good thing. OK, that doesn’t make as much sense as I hoped but you probably know what I mean. Not many would have expected the Poch to be on his bike before Unai Emery, but there you go and Emery is certainly not looking to make the most of this reprieve. Arsenal were woeful - is David Luiz back in position yet? Southampton wil be gutted as this was a potential gift of three points, until Alexandre Lacazette, rarely seen on a football field in the 96th minute under Emery, made it 2-2. You have to feel a little bit sorry for Simon Francis, the Bournemouth skipper. In his first game back since his Boxing

And then City killed them. There is so much to like about Frank Lampard’s Chelsea and, indeed, Lampard himself - he was brave enough to drop his surrogate son for this one, Mount starting on the bench. He had the side spot-diddly tactically until the scores were level. Chelsea even had more possession by the end of the game - the first time Peppy G has one a match with less of the ball than the other lot in his whole career. It just goes to show though, without goals possession alone doesn’t get you three points - and boy did City need these three points given how things went for Liverpool at Selhurst Park. ‘It is the sign of a top team to win when you don’t play well’ ‘To win the league, you need a little bit of luck’ ‘These things will balance out over a season’ No, you haven’t suddenly tuned into more in-depth analysis on Match of the Day - these are the classic cliches that sum up Liverpool perfectly this season. They weren’t very good against Palace, like they’ve not been that good in other matches this season. But they won, of course they did. And they got some assistance from the referee and VAR, of course they did. And things might still balance out by the end of the season. It was Bobby Firmino who struck oh-solate to give King Klopp another three points, but it was Palace’s disallowed-byVAR goal earlier in the match that caused the most controversy. Every non-

Man United were suddenly playing with a bit of tempo, a bit of energy and I can assure you it had nothing to do with Phil Jones being subbed and Jesse Lingard coming on. It might have had slightly more to do with Mason Greenwood being summoned from the bench, but hey - Ole knows nothing about tactics, right? As for Sheffield United, they showed once again why they are one of the better sides to watch this season as they dominated the game for all other than the few minutes where Daniel James took the game by the scruff of the neck and caused the havoc that saw Man United score three. The problem is, they didn’t see it out and even VAR couldn’t ruin the party this time, correctly ruling that Oli McBurnie’s arms do not start on his chest. The equaliser was given - and David de Gea probably should have saved seeing that he got there.

Day 2018 injury, he collected two yellow cards and looked worryingly off the pace. Bournemouth didn’t do him many favours by being so poor, but after almost a year of wanting to be back on the pitch it was over within 30 minutes. Bournemouth have won once in eight, which sounds about right for them at this time of year as Eddie Howe cunningly distances himself from links to top jobs by losing football matches at just the right time. Watford are rock-bottom once again after they got Dyched and Everton crumbled at home to Norwich City. Don’t get me wrong, I still think both Watford and Norwich might end up the two earliest relegated teams in Premier League history - but it was nice to see Norwich, who do try and play a bit even when common sense should prevail, get a confidence-boosting win. As for Marco Silva, there is every chance he’ll get to spend Christmas with the family this year.

1st Round of President’s Trophy (Sponsored by MoneyCorp)

Neil Oliver won Bronze, a swift and impressive response from collection of the Abacus last week in La Torre. Darren Hancock took Gold. But the stand-out score of the day went to Ivan Hanak. Very discrete in his prize-winning activities of late, Ivan romped home with a superb 39 points and a significant leap up this season’s Order of Merit table. The real shock of the day came with the awarding of the Abacus. Those who saw Barry Roehrig’s totally-out-ofcharacter tee shot on the first could only have thought that things would quickly get better. Well, it seems not. Welcome to the majority’s world Baz! The day’s winning results, by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 3rd John Rose (29), 2nd Keith Stevenson (30 on CB) and 1st Neil Oliver, also on 30 points

Imanyo Golf Society

SMGS at Alenda

The first round of this season’s SMGS President’s Trophy drew a rather small field compared to other occasions. A number of factors contributed to this (none involving trips up the toll motorway by mistake), the main two being the day’s buggy price compared to other courses the Society plays, and a number of members going away on a separately organised trip. Twenty-eight turned up accompanied by 3 guests. Those that did make it found a course in very good condition, way ahead of that encountered in SMGS’s previous visit in March, with the green’s particularly notable for their smooth roll and consistency. A pleasure to play. Due to the limited numbers 3 categories were maintained, but only 3 prized places given in each. Quite clearly Bronze category players struggled more than Silver, and Silver more than Gold.

El Paraiso Fishing Competition November This month a full compliment of 14 anglers took part and as discussed the pegs were changed to have 7 on each side with none on the cross over. The high numbers proved to be profitable with the last 2 pegs providing 1st and 2nd top weights, although there was some blanks the weights were

far better than last months with our Belgium friend Willy catching over 24kgs from the very tough peg 13. We weighed Willys best fish at 6.14kgs (13.5lbs). Second placed Russells haul of 16.40 kgs consisted of only 4 fish which averages at over 9lb per fish We also had our first lady angler taking part and to mark the occasion the owners presented Marlene with a voucher for a meal for 2 which was a kind gesture. The results for November is as follows, 1. Willy peg 13 2. Russell peg 14 3. Marlene peg 9 4. Richard W. peg 6

took full advantage. They converted from a penalty in the 79th minute and then just 2 minutes later slipped a header in to bring the scoreline to 3 all.

Malaga v Elche CF, Sunday 24th November, kick off 16:00, attendance 13,691 The Rosaleda was half in sun and half in shade, a theme that was reflected in the play of the two teams. Elche, wearing their away kit of Black and Green delivered and dominated for the first 30 minutes with 2 goals, one from a penalty, but both by Fidel #16. With a 0-2 scoreline the Franjiverdes were, for the first time this season in 5th place, a play off spot for the la Liga. Just before half time, at 38 minutes, the white and blue stripes of Malaga celebrated their first gol. The second half saw a complete reversal of fortune and play. The Malageneans came out strong, whilst the Elche started to relax for which they paid the price. Fidel was substituted

following an injury and a magnificent performance by the Elche Goal Keeper, Edgar, who surprisingly plays as #13, resulted in the scoreline being maintained. Elche managed to slip another ball into the net. Josan, #17 from Crevillent, made a superb millimetre perfect cross to Gonzalo Villar #8 who executed a master header. It was the first goal for the U21 Spanish International with Elche and was the final move of brilliance by the Franjiverdes. Disappointingly and yet again, Elche let the opportunity for 3 points slip from their grasp. Pachetas men literally took their eye off the ball as well as the players and the Malageneans

Pacheta stood with his hands on his hips as his team slid from the 5th spot, down 5 places to 10th position. To be fair, the result was a good achievement considering the match stats, as Elche CF only had 40.8% possession, 12 less shots on goal and created 13 less chances than Malaga. I guess that the slogan across the back of the shorts of the Malageneans ‘Costa del Sol’ was aptly placed.
