Santa Walk success More than 300 people took part in Sunday’s Santa Walk in aid of the Spanish anti-cancer charity the AECC. The event was organised b Maria and the Pink

Ladies and hosted by Zenia Boulevard. Although the money is still coming in and being counted organisers believe that the kind-hearted fundraisers will have raised more than â‚Ź2,000. There was certainly an atmosphere of festive fun as hundreds of people gathered in the main square of the shopping centre dressed in Christmas Continued on page 3

Friday market place on Thursday

takes

Torrevieja’s Friday market will take place on Thursday of this week due to the bank holiday on Friday, 6th December. Not only is Friday a ‘festivo’ which means the market will move forward a day, but the market grounds are also set to be used to celebrate the hugely popular Paella Competition on Friday - part of the town’s Patronal Fiestas. The Paella Competition will take place all day until 7pm.

NHW meeting There was good attendance at the last meeting of 2019 for Torrevieja West Neighbourhood Watch & Residents group. The meeting reviewed criminal and suspicious activity in the area and were given advice on how to better protect themselves and their property from thieves and the dreaded hugger muggers. As no one from the town hall attended the meeting, members could not get any answers to residents’ questions, so these will have to be deferred until the next meeting when organisers hope someone from the council will be able to respond to issues and concerns. Everyone enjoyed a glass of wine, cheese snacks and mince pies when they arrived and a huge raffle provided some smiling faces. The meeting was Continued on page 5

Continued from page 1 themed clothes and fancy dress. The event has been running for many years and so the local community knows the drill and this year was no exception; there was a sea of Santas, Mrs Claus and elves not to mention Christmas jumpers in every design imaginable all creating a striking sight as the walkers weaved their way around Playa Flamenca. The route was a 5k circuit starting and finishing at the Boulevard with the €5 registration fee going directly to the charity. People also made individual donations, which were added to the pot. This year saw the Royal British Legion Concert Band celebrate the event for the first time and proved to be a crowd pleaser as they played traditional carols for the crowd to sing Santa leads the way along to. Sunshine FM was also on hand to add to the Christmas spirit with everyone’s favourite festive pop tunes and The Crazy Ladies entertained the crowd when the walkers returned. The event is always a great day out for the family and many people came to support the event and made donation even though they didn’t complete the walk. The walk itself, escorted by the Local Police, saw participants walk, run, jog, stroll and be pushed and involved all the family, young, old and of the four-legged

variety. Members of the public were also asked to donate food and hygiene products, which have been donated to less fortunate families and individuals through Reach Out Torrevieja. Maria said: “I would like to thank Johnny Lea for providing the speakers to play the Christmas tunes during the actual walk, Dave for supplying Santa's transport and the Town Hall and Local Police; not forgetting Zenia Boulevard management team for its continued support and the local community of course, because without these kind-hearted people we wouldn’t achieve anything.” Since its inception nine years ago, Maria and the Pink Ladies has raised hundreds of thousands of euros for the AECC Early Detection Programme. This programme saves lives by allowing members of the public of any nationality access to subsidised private healthcare cancer testing. These are offered to men and women to test for cancers including: skin, bowel, prostate, breast, cervical and ovarian. The tests can be complete in Alicante or at the IMED clinic in Torrevieja.

Completion in sight for coastal Emergency Services Centre Local residents in Orihuela Costa are hoping that the end is now is sight for the Costal Emergency Service Centre after the local government team began the contract process for the completion works. The contract, worth 2,194,913 euros will complete the project presented by the City Council of Orihuela and which has the approval of the Generalitat. According to the terms of the contract, the work itself should take 10 months but that time frame won’t start until the tender process is complete and the contract awarded. The centre has a chequered past with neither the local government nor The Generalitat Valenciana wanting to assume the financial responsibility. However, after the project ground to a halt under regional supervision the City Council of Orihuela assumed the tender for the works last year. The building of the Centre began in 2010 and an amount of 985,000 euros was spent, but the works were halted two years later due to the bankruptcy of the construction company. The facilities, of 4,700 square meters, will accommodate the National Police, Civil Guard, Local Police, Fire-fighters, Civil Protection and specialist immigration and forest brigades

and will also serve as the emergency co-ordination centre for the southern Alicante province. In addition, it will also act as a base for SAMU in the summer when the population increases. In the basement there will be a car park, staff gym, holding cells and control room. The ground floor will have a customer facing area, offices, staff changing rooms, bedrooms and dining room. On the outside of the building will be a helipad. The Emergency Centre will house a 24-hour Local Police station. Improved safety and security The Emergency Services Centre is much-needed and long awaited by the local community in

Orihuela Costa and surrounding areas and they have been a number of protests and demonstrations in front of the building's skeleton to demand its construction and completion. Having the centre operational will bring added safety and security to the area, since currently ambulances and fire engines have to be sent from neighbouring towns and there is only a small number of Policia Local assigned to the area. It is hoped the centre will facilitate significantly improved emergency response times due to immediate location and better knowledge of local addresses and locations.

Torrevieja wants to host world cup Torrevieja wants to host a football world cup for residents in 2020. A new initiative by the Council for International Residents, the event aims to promote integration of different nationalities through sport. There are a number of categories planned – three children’s divisions (under 12s, under 15s and under 18s) as well as a women’s division, a senior division (for ages 18 to 40) and a veterans division. The format will be football 7 or 11 aside depending on how many players sign up. To register to represent a country in the Torrevieja world cup, players must be from that country (or born to parents from that country). The tournament is open to amateur footballers only so anyone already registered with a club need not apply. Players must be on the padron in Torrevieja for at least 3 months. Many countries are already represented with full teams but the town hall is very interested in signing up players to represent the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. A shortlist of players is being kept by the Costa Blanca People so to register your interest, please email office@costablancapeople.com and include your name and date of birth. All players need to do at this stage is register – supporting documents can be provided at a later date (padron, etc). For more information, contact the OARI foreign residents office on 965 70 52 43. The town hall would like to have teams finalised before Christmas so registering your interest as soon as possible would be appreciated.

Winter cultural programme The winter cultural programme for Torrevieja was published this week and contains a number of theatrical and musical performances bound to appeal to the international community. For example, on December 13th the Philharmonic Orchestra of the University of Alicante perform at the Virgen del Carmen Cultural Centre (free entry). On December 14th, Cantus Colorus perform Christmas music at the Palacio de la Musica (free entry). On December 15th a charity concert for flood victims takes place at the Municipal Theatre at midday while the Fiesta Papá Noel comes to the Palacio de la Musica on the same day at noon, 4pm and again at 7pm (free entry). Many more events take place throughout the rest of December and a copy of the full programme is available from the tourist office or online at torrevieja.es.

The new contract for the maintenance, conservation and repair of roads and public spaces in Orihuela Costa has been awarded. "These works have been highly anticipated and requested for many years by our citizens in Orihuela Costa and will soon be a reality," said the mayor of Orihuela Emilio Bascuñana. The total amount of the tender was 3,309,584.16 euros (including VAT) and the winning company in charge of the works is Zaplana Caselles, SL. The contract will last for four years with the possibility of being extended for a further two years. The planned works, which will begin shortly,” represents an increase of almost 250,000 euros more than the previous contract, and also sees

increases in the number of operators and material resources,” explained the Councillor for infrastructure Angel Noguera. The mayor highlighted the government teams commitment to Orihuela Costa saying it wanted to “continue meeting the historical needs of the coast, shown in the recent re-tender of the works to complete the Emergency Centre”.

Christmas Jumper Day With help still desperately needed in the run up to Christmas, the Costa Blanca People is encouraging local businesses, clubs and groups to take part in a festive fundraiser – Christmas Jumper Day. Friday 13th December is set to be more Christmassy than Christmas itself as businesses and groups of friends across the southern Costa Blanca don their best Christmas Jumper in the name of charity. The Costa Blanca People and Kosta Kitchens are encouraging everyone to join in the fun – and all you need to do is get your Christmas Jumper on! Work is so much more fun when you’re wearing a Christmas Jumper – or even a pair of silly reindeer antlers, so get your colleagues (and your boss!) on board. The campaign is not only for people in the workplace – if you have a group of friends, a club or a charity, you are also most welcome to take part!

If you don’t have a Christmas Jumper already, don’t worry! You can decorate an ordinary jumper, or borrow one from a friend. What’s important is that together, we have the chance to raise money for families in need this Christmas! We suggest a minimum donation of €2 per person but obviously, the more you can give the more it will help. Decide how much you want to ask colleagues and clients to donate. Ask family and friends for sponsorship. If you like, you can turn it into an event or party for clients and provide mince pies and a glass of mulled wine. How much you do is up to you but the idea is to raise as much money on the day as you can. Make sure to take plenty of photos (and videos) and post these to your social media, tagging the Costa Blanca People as you go. This way, all of our readers and followers will be able to see who is taking part. Many families are still

getting back on their feet, having lost everything in the floods. With this fundraiser, we want to be able to give these families a boost. The donations will be shared among families most in need and will be used towards Christmas – whether that is help towards covering the cost of Christmas dinner or gifts for the children. We have enlisted the help of the charity Help Vega Baja who will distribute donations among the families most in need this Christmas. WHAT NOW? Let us know that you are committed to taking part and we will email you a free poster to put on display, or on social media to show your clients, employees and friends that you’re helping those most in need this Christmas. Funds raised on the day can be brought to the Costa Blanca People, Kosta Kitchens or other selected outlets (to be confirmed) on Monday 16th December.

Campaign for a cleaner Almoradí C.L.A.R.O to continue "Wanted Civics" is the motto of the campaign that has just started in Almoradí. The City Council is launching the initiative with the aim of achieving a cleaner Almoradí. The campaign was presented recently by the mayor, María Gómez, who was joined by the Councillor for the Environment, José Antonio Latorre, Councillor for Urban Services, Domingo Andreu and Local Police representative, officer Juan Miguel Murcia. The campaign will roll out in stages, the first part is information based, where residents will be given details of the coexistence programme which will be enforced by the local police and could result in fines of between €300 and €3,000. The programme is divided into specific areas and targets people who use the streets of Almoradí for dumping rubbish, furniture or other items, those who do not clean up after their pets and people who disrespect or damage parks and street furniture, such as benches, bus stops and lampposts etc. These are deemed to be the anti-social behaviours that most affect day-to-day life in Almoradí. A group of volunteers will take to the streets to inform the local community of the rules collated in an information leaflet, as well as to give out bottles and bags to pet owners.

This campaign has been launched so that the residents of Almoradí know that in public spaces there are rights but also duties and obligations, so it is calling on its residents to be civic minded and collaborate with the authorities. As well as the adult population, the campaign will be directed to all school

children across the town, raising awareness of the cleanliness of public spaces the children in turn will tell parents and grandparents of the new rules and the importance of a clean and pleasant space for all to live in. The mayor also explained that the local government team intends to create an impact in the local community through micro-announcements on television and social networks. Mayor Maria Gomez said: "Goods are taken only on Wednesdays from 8pm, or by calling 965306807 beforehand, and that from next Thursday a ‘clean spot’ will be available at the Las Maromas Polygon, which will be serviced every Monday and Thursday from 8am to 12noon. Appliances, mattresses, plastic, cardboard or pruning remains from

small gardens can all be deposited here and they will be removed.”

coalition

Collaboration She explained that the council is ‘trying to provide citizens with services so that the streets of Almoradí are clean’, as well as ensuring they know the rules and so can avoid the fines. Councillor Latorre said that this campaign is also going to make a door-to-door collection of the boxes and rubbish from shops and commercial establishments, which will have to take their rubbish out Wednesday night and it will be collected Thursday morning. Police office Juan Miguel Murcia made it clear that anyone could be sanctioned from this moment onwards, although the police will wait a few days for the information campaign to filter into the community. He also called for citizen collaboration, saying all complaints will be treated anonymously. To this end, the City Council has established three communication channels by which residents can send information or photographs or incidents related to garbage collection, street cleaning or damage and vandalism to urban furniture: by WhatsApp to 609133109, by message to the City Council's Facebook page, or via "Citizen Participation" on the MunicipAPP application.

At its recent Annual General Meeting, attended by 50 members agreed to continue the Cambiemos-PodemosCLARO Coalition. Six months ago in the municipal election, C.L.A.R.O. contributed nearly a thousand votes to the electoral coalition Cambiemos-Podemos-CLARO, more votes than the Popular Party and Ciudadanos together, which have governed Orihuela since 2015. The votes C.L.A.R.O. obtained strengthened the Coalition’s representation in the Orihuela Town Council but fell just short of the number required to elect C.L.A.R.O President Helene Akerman as councillor. The Annual General Meeting unanimously approved the policy of the party to maintain and strengthen the coalition and to fight to realise the solid selection of policies included in the election programme for the coast. C.L.A.R.O claims that the previous governing coalition of PP and Ciudadanos did not provide a single significant improvement in the services and infrastructure of the coast. No emergency Services Centre, no multicultural centre, no second health centre. It also believes that the basic services such as street cleaning and rubbish removal continue to be inadequate. A spokesman said: “The municipal sports centre has been closed for more

than 6 months depriving residents of an important facility. PP-Ciudadanos made no effort in the past 4 years to save Cala Mosca, the last green area on the coast, from the construction of 1500 new homes but they did approve the construction of some one thousand new homes which greatly increased the population and the congestion of Orihuela Costa but without a corresponding increase in municipal services.” In order to continue its fight for the rights of the people of the coast the meeting decided to reorganise and restructure the party and to create an Extended Committee alongside the Executive Committee to reflect the increase in the number of members and to enable volunteers to contribute to strengthening the party in various fields. The Annual General Meeting voted unanimously for a new 7 person Executive Committee: Helene Akerman will continue as President, Antonio Cerdan becomes Secretary General plus Paul Piccio, Huberto Canovas, Christina Belardi, Bob Houliston and Bob Hunkin. The committee reflects the make-up of Orihuela Costa Community with three Spanish members, including one internationalist, two Scandinavians and two British.

Police recover historical manuscripts Guardia Civil have recovered important historical manuscripts in Pilar de la Horadada. The officers were working as part of a wider operation, Operation Clarisas, which was underway in Murcia, Alicante, Barcelona, Valencia, Cantabria and La Coruña. Officers recovered 23 books and manuscripts of vital importance to Spanish heritage, dating as far back as the 16th century. Two people were questioned in Pilar de la Horadada during the operation and in total, nine people are being investigated for the misappropriation of historical artefacts. 14 books and nine documents, written between the 16th and 20th centuries, have

been returned to their rightful owners – a further 70 historical documents were also uncovered as part of the wider operation. The documents are religious, military and public record in

nature and those seized in Pilar de la Horadada have been authenticated by experts from the General Archive of the Region of Murcia as well as the head of Historiographic Science

at the University of Murcia. Guardia Civil have been investigating the sale of black market historical documents online for a number of months and from June last year, focused their efforts on the current operation as part of a wider plan to protect Spanish historical heritage. Since then, officers have been monitoring a number of websites dedicated to the sale of antiques and collectibles. Officers found out that vendors, some of them professional booksellers, used pseudonyms or ‘nicknames’ to make direct sales or online auctions, with the supposed intention of hiding their identity and avoiding their location being disclosed.

Chorizo ban improves worker health A six month ban on chorizo at the Seat factory has resulted in improved cardiovascular health in workers. Workers were participating in a health study alongside Harvard scientists who found that modifying habits made the workers healthier, reduced the main cardiovascular risk indicators (weight, waist diameter and cholesterol) and improved mental health and sleep quality.

The study involved the dietary and behavioural habits of Seat plant workers in Barcelona and Llobregat, all of whom underwent tests both before and after the six month experiment. 300 of the workers agreed to take part and were encouraged to swap their lunchtime food of choice – a chorizo sandwich – for a more healthy option. They were offered healthy snacks from vending machines as well as healthy habits

seminars. After six months, the results showed a significant improvement in worker health.

Find out why it’s worth preplanning your funeral as an expat so you can enjoy your life in the sun Arranging a funeral is a stressful experience, but when you’re navigating a foreign funeral system, it can be even more difficult. When the time comes, will your loved ones know how to arrange a funeral in Spain? The Spanish funeral system can catch many expats unaware. Traditionally, Spanish funerals happen as quickly as 24 to 48 hours after the person passes away. Funerals for expats can take longer, especially if friends and family want to fly out, but this delay could cost hundreds of Euros in extra mortuary expenses. In addition, it’s common for Funeral Directors in Spain to request either part or full payment upfront. Then there’s the language barrier to deal with, along with unfamiliar processes. That’s why it’s so helpful to plan ahead to make things a little easier. Make funeral arrangements simple Whether you live in Spain the whole year round, or have a summer home here, a prepaid funeral plan lets you make everything simpler for your loved ones when the time comes. Avalon is the fastest growing provider of funeral plans in Europe. They’ve helped more than

70,000 customers across Spain, the Canaries, Portugal, Cyprus and the UK for over 25 years. Plus, they have been named the UK’s Best Funeral Plan Provider at the Personal Finance Awards. An Avalon plan lets you pay for your funeral in advance, either in a lump sum or affordable monthly payments, so that your loved ones don’t have to deal with unexpected costs and complications. “For peace of mind, especially for expatriates and their families, I would highly recommend Avalon’s services,” says Michael, whose mother and stepfather had Avalon expat plans when they passed away. “On both occasions, the service we received was exemplary – they made what was such a stressful time in Spain so much easier.” Avalon plans are specially designed for British expats in Spain. An Avalon plan is valid in the UK and Spain, so you can choose to have a funeral in either country. Our local, specialist advisors are on hand to talk through our range of plans and your options so you can relax, knowing everything will be taken care of. Winter is coming December arrives with a bang this week as the province of Alicante is subject to severe weather warnings. AEMET, the Spanish Met Office, has warned of extremely heavy and persistent rainfall as well as winds with gusts of 100km/hr. In coastal areas, waves could be as high as four metres. Meteorologists at the Laboratory of Climatology at the University of Alicante are not expecting the same levels of rain and subsequent flooding that hit the Vega Baja in September but are warning of a notable fall in temperatures from early this week. The most severe weather is expected to hit the north of the Alicante province with the remainder of the region on yellow alert for rain and coastal conditions. Starting from today (Tuesday) meteorologists are expecting the arrival of a mass of cold air which accompanies the impending storm and are predicting that temperatures will drop by as much as 5 or 6 degrees in places and some higher areas of the north of the province could even expect some snowfall.

GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP The primary influence on the pound this week has been the slew of opinion polls regarding the outcome of the General Election. Last weekend, the suggestion of a commanding lead for the Conservatives saw sterling make gains to rally above €1.17 and a Kantar poll early in the week suggesting that the incumbent party’s lead was narrowing saw the pound slip 0.7%. Later in the week, the YouGov MRP poll – the only polling model to predict the hung parliament in 2017 – contradicted those second results and suggested a win for the Conservatives and the pound rose to a 6-month high against the euro. The issue was not particularly one of party preference on the part of the market or the pound; a narrowing lead would mean a hung parliament which brings further uncertainty and potentially ongoing political deadlock that has frustrated the progress of Brexit and cast a long shadow over the pound. Another issue suggested by Adam Cole, chief currency strategist at Royal Bank of Canada, is that there is the possibility that analysts have been “somewhat complacent” when pricing in political risk to sterling and unexpected outcomes may cause further volatility. It wasn’t all politics this week, however. There was some good news from the CBI Distributive Trade Survey, which showed an improvement in November to -3% from -10% the previous month and the House Price Index Headlines revealed marginally higher house

price growth in November. The report stated that annual house price growth remained subdued at 0.8%, reflecting a 0.5% rise MoM. The pound didn’t register a reaction while focused on politics but any positive indications for the economy are good news for the pound while it is buffeted by developments in the General Election campaign. It was a muted week for the euro. Early in the week, a slight improvement in business confidence in Germany was not enough to boost the euro as analysts considered the uncertain outlook overall and the fact that to date, the stimulus measures from the ECB have yet to yield results – the euro has weakened 1.5% so far in November. Positive indications about a conclusion to the US-China trade war kept the US dollar on top of the euro this week but overall the central currency is holding relatively steady as political uncertainty elsewhere increases volatility and the ECB continues to look to the future. This week BenoîtCœuré, executive board member of the ECB mooted the possibility of a central bank digital currency (CBDC) and an official at the Central Bank of France suggested that blockchain technology could deliver improvements to the financial system. As yet the impact of the latest round of QE has yet to provide any assistance to the euro but there appears to be a confident and forward-looking approach which may help the euro hold its ground.

Spectacular Stagestruck Three consecutive shows were packed to the rafters at the weekend as am dram group Stagestruck staged their annual Christmas pantomime at the Cardenal Belluga Theatre in San Fulgencio. Cinderella was performed to a backdrop of stunning sets (par for the course when the show’s director is an artist) and included a dazzling laser light show provided by Robert Stokes who had travelled to Spain from the UK especially to lend his lighting expertise. Audiences participated in all the traditional pantomime fun –

booing the ‘baddies’ and many choruses of ‘Oh no he isn’t! Oh yes he is!’ – some of the younger audience members even took to the stage for a bit of linedancing fun. Standout performances included the lead Cinderella (Alice Wakeford), her wicked stepmother Veruca (Jenny Dexter) and the hilariously ditzy fairy godmother (Jean Speakman). The ugly sisters and policemen had everyone in stitches and the entire cast put on a great performance, including a number of young dancers from Essence

Dance. Audiences enjoyed the pantomime so much that as the curtain closed, they were shouting for more. Director Suzanne Stokes revealed that already, preparations are underway for the group’s summer show - ‘The Haunting of Hogg’s Bottom Manor’ in June and are currently welcoming new members to audition. So if you love to act, sing and dance, please either email stagestruck.show@gmail.com, or call Suzanne on 680 961 025.

11 months without Henry It has been eleven long months without news of Henry Alejandro Jiménez Marín, the young man who was last seen on the Orihuela Costa, during the early hours of January 1st this year, after celebrating New Year's Eve with friends and disappearing without a trace. Since then, his family is devastated by the absence of a beloved son and brother. Since Henry went missing, his family and friends have searched Orihuela Costa and other nearby towns and villages on a weekly basis and have been campaigning for support and begging for information on the whereabouts of the youngster. This weekend, Henry’s loved ones staged a demonstration to show that after almost a year missing, they have not forgotten about him and will not give up their search.

MISSING: British man in the Torrevieja area Help find him! Mr Kenneth Dallas McPHERSON, 62, went missing on the morning of Saturday 23 November at Torrevieja Marina. He was last known to be kayaking in the marina and has not been seen since. He is 5ft 11inches (180cm), medium build, with a white goatee beard and very short white/grey hair. The family is

concerned that he may have been carried out to sea and/or picked up by a boat on its way elsewhere. The family would be grateful for information from anyone who may have seen Mr McPherson or his kayak. If you have any information, please call the Guardia Civil on 112 or the British Consulate on +34 965 216 022.

La Mata man sentenced for child porn A La Mata resident has been sentenced to two years in prison for distributing child pornography, it emerged this week. The sentence was handed down by the court in Elche after the Technological Investigation Brigade of the National Police found the man to been storing and distributing degrading images of minors, including babies. Police found the images during a routine network search carried out to detect crimes of this type and were able to track the man down by his IP address which led them to a house in La Mata. There, they seized his computer and a

mobile phone. The defendant used well known file sharing programmes to download pornographic videos and photographs where minors were used and then, according to the authorities, consciously and voluntarily shared the depraved media with other internet users. In its brief, the Prosecutor's Office revealed that some of the videos were violent and others included zoophilic content, that is, featuring animals. As a result of this man’s arrest, it is also now possible to investigate and arrest other paedophiles who had downloaded and shared the material. Judicial sources pointed

out that it is common in this type of operation to end up arresting dozens of people, since once the agents have identified which file contains the material, it is easily traceable through the internet and officers can then detect all users who have downloaded it. The defendant, having been sentenced to less than two years and one day, will not currently enter prison. The Prosecutor's Office did not object to the suspension of his sentence, on the condition he commits no further crime and participates in a sexual education programme. In addition, the man will be on probation for three years.

Seagate Wealth Management

Still Using your UK Financial Adviser? M

any people who have retired to Spain and have investments still use their old UK‐based financial adviser. This could be for a variety of reasons, from feeling comfortable with the person they have been dealing with for many years, to not knowing any local Spanish‐ based financial advisers. One of the main problems of continuing with your old adviser is they may not be authorised to give advice here in Spain. They almost certainly will not have the in‐depth knowledge of the tax‐efficient products available to Spanish tax residents. Apart from the understanding of the Spanish system, having a local adviser means you can pop in to their office for a chat and be kept up to date with all the various changes that take place. This is especially relevant at the moment with the uncertainty surrounding Brexit. There are many advisers in Spain, but it is vitally important to ensure that the adviser you choose is UK qualified and properly authorised and regulated. Seagate Wealth advisers all used to work for Lloyds Bank and have a deep understanding of what British people want and expect from their financial adviser. Having worked in the service industry, they are fully‐ versed in customer care and regulation. By being a completely independent company, Seagate Wealth has access to a vast range of flexible, cost effective products from some of the worlds’ leading providers, including Prudential International. Here at Seagate Wealth, we can help with savings and investment advice, tracing lost pensions as well as managing existing pensions. If you are thinking about finding a new Spanish‐based financial adviser, then give us a call and see what we can do for you to ensure you live life the way you want. Things in your bedroom to bin Knowing what to trash and exactly when to do it will make the cosiest room in your house healthier and more sleepfriendly. Vacuuming the dust bunnies under your bed isn’t the only thing you need to do to maintain a healthy and hygienic bedroom. Hanging on to pillows, sheets, even your comfy slippers past their shelf life can aggravate allergies, lead to skin breakouts, and even set you up for falling or catching a bug. Do your body a favour and find out exactly when to let go of six common items everyone has in their bedroom. Bedding Bedsheets, pillow cases, and duvet covers last for up to three years depending on how well they’re made. After three years, they would be ‘lifeless,’ meaning the bulk of cotton fiber is washed away and the poly base is limp and non-absorbent. With the fabric in poor shape, your bedding might also develop hiding places for dust mites and bacteria. That sets you up for allergies, rashes, acne, and asthma, especially when it comes to your pillow cases, which make direct contact with your face. Pillows They lose their shape and support

of dirty surfaces, such as your kitchen and bathroom floors or your front entrance. Like any other footwear, they absorb sweat and can turn into breeding grounds for microbes that could make you sick. To reduce your odds of a foot or nail infection, it is recommended that you machine washing them every one to two weeks and to “not wait until they are smelly."

each night you rest your head on them, so get new pillows every one to two years. A lumpy or flat pillow will likely result in chronic pain, headaches, and stiffness, says sleep expert Amy Diamond of Brooklyn Bedding. You or your partner’s snoring could worsen due to lack of head and neck support. Also, pillows can develop grooves and holes were harmful dust mites and bacteria might hide. Slippers Because they don’t get much wear and tear, you might think you can putter around in your favourite cosy bedroom slippers indefinitely. Actually, they should be junked after a year. The more you walk around in slippers, the less stable they become, putting you at risk of falling. Then there's all the germs they pick up. Even when they appear to be clean, slippers come into contact with plenty

Mattress A quality mattress is essential to healthy sleep, and yours should be replaced every eight to 10 years. If you’re loyal to one side of the bed, you should rotate your mattress at least twice a year to help keep it in shape as long as possible. “Mattress flipping is especially important if you share your bed with someone, no matter how much you weigh,” Ikea USA Design spokesperson Janice Simonsen. “The extra pressure will inevitably lead to irregular wear.” The following signs tell you your mattress needs to be ousted. “With time, a mattress can lose its shape and begin to sag, creating dips and lumps,” Simonsen says. “Pressure from weight will cause all mattresses, even the best quality, to compress and break down after a period of time. Bed mites and allergens can also collect in the mattress," making you more prone to allergies.

Brits in Benidorm drug bust A sniffer dog lead police to a secret false floor in boot of car resulting in the arrest of two Brits on drug charges in Benidorm. The false floor in the vehicle yielded plastic bags filled with party pills, hash and a switch blade knife. The suspected criminals behind the illegal substances are two British nationals, now charged

with crimes of drug trafficking. The heist came after Policía Local in Benidorm were patrolling the English Square area of Benidorm earlier this month accompanied by canine units. One of the dogs ‘marked an area’ of the boot of a stationary car though police could not find the source of the dog’s alarm.

However, officers soon found a secret button, which when pressed revealed a false floor in the boot of the vehicle containing the contraband drugs. Policía Local also found business cards of the suspected criminals, suggesting they worked ‘on request’ for their clients in the Costa Blanca party city.

Missing migrants feared dead Four migrants have died and at least 10 more are missing after attempting a sea crossing to Spain. Rescue services have said that they located a boat adrift around 30 nautical miles north of Melilla, a Spanish exclave city located on the northern coast of Africa. Rescuers saved around 55 people, three of whom were in a serious condition. One of the latter died after reaching Melilla, where the migrants were taken back to. There are three children among the survivors, said government sources in Melilla. The same sources said that the rescue vessel Salvamar Spica found the migrant boat almost completely sunken, with three dead bodies aboard. A rescue helicopter was dispatched to the area to try to locate the

missing people. At 11.15pm last Monday, the surviving migrants, who hail from sub-Saharan Africa and from Asia, arrived at the recreational port of Melilla, where they were greeted by Red Cross volunteers who provided assistance and took some of them to the local hospitals to receive treatment. Personnel from the United Nations Refugee Agency were also on hand to determine whether any of the migrants might require international protection. After receiving early assistance

at the port, the migrants were then taken to the local temporary holding facility, CETI, which is already over capacity due to an influx of migrants since August. Sources familiar with the situation said that several tents have been set up to provide accommodation for all the people housed at the centre. In the last week alone, more than 170 migrants have been taken to the Melilla facility, including this latest group. So far this year, more than 300 people have drowned or disappeared in the Strait of Gibraltar and the westernmost portion of the Mediterranean as they attempted to reach Spain, this is a 42 percent drop from 2018. One out of every 100 migrants continues to die at sea.

Spain’s life expectancy one of highest Life expectancy in Spain has shot up to 83 years and four months, making it the highest in the EU, the second-highest on the European continent and the third-highest in the world. Women now live to an average of 86 in Spain – an increase of two years and seven-and-a-half months since the year 2002 – and men live to 80 years and five months, an increase of four years and two-and-a-half months in that time. Overall, life expectancy in Spain has risen by three-and-a-half years, and is expected to be just short of 86 or even 87 years and five months within the next two decades, depending upon which study is most accurate and to what extent the main causes of nonaccidental death from anything other than old age can be reduced. A breakdown by gender is not given for Spain's forecast life expectancy by the year 2040, but given the typical difference of around five-and-a-half years between them, it could be that Spanish women will be living to an average of 90 or more within the next 20 years. According to the most recent study on life expectancy by the University of Washington State, in Seattle, aside from old age, accidents or violent crime, the top 10 causes of death in the first world are ischaemic heart failure – where the arteries narrow, preventing blood from pumping – Alzheimer's, lung cancer, strokes (both ischaemic, or a reduction in blood flow to the brain, and haemorrhagic, or an excessive bleed on the brain), chronic obstructive

pulmonary disease (COPD), bowel and colon cancer, breast cancer, suicide, and other cardiovascular and respiratory conditions, in that order. Breast cancer is currently cured in full in nearly 90 percent of cases, bowel cancer can be prevented through screening and 90 percent of diagnosed cases are cured, lung cancer at present has a very high mortality rate due to being asymptomatic until a late stage, Alzheimer's – age-related non-vascular dementia, rather than early-onset Alzheimer's - is on the rise due to people living longer, and suicide is the cause of more deaths in Spain than traffic accidents. The Washington State University research also cites influences such as access to and quality of national healthcare, income per head and education levels – in the case of the latter two, the higher these are, the longer a person is likely to live. But rising life expectancy is also affected by lower infant mortality – and this has reduced dramatically since around 1970, according to a recent report by the national health authority. Men in all countries and cultures typically live shorter lives than women, says the ministry of health – partly due to genetic makeup, and partly because men have a greater risk of cardiovascular diseases, are more inclined to smoke, drink alcohol, overeat or eat an unhealthy diet, and are naturally predisposed to greater risk-taking than women, an attitude that is thought to have its roots in the

Environment of Evolutionary Adaptation (EEA), between three million and 10,000 years ago. And although women are more likely to attempt suicide than men, those who are successful are more likely to be male, with the highest risk group being the under-45s. Whilst women live on average five years, seven months and one week longer than men, the 'gender life expectancy gap' has been closing since around 1992, says the health authority – partly because of women being more likely to go out to work and to be financially independent, which increases their stress levels and money worries and means they are more likely to drive or use public transport rather than being at home all day except for short walks to shops or schools, and partly because alcohol consumption and smoking in women has risen since, decades ago, both behaviours were standard in men but frowned upon in women. Life expectancy in Spain differs by location – not greatly, but by at least two to four years on average. No qualitative information has been given on why, and the regions with the highest and lowest life expectancies do not appear to have a great deal in common, except for the fact that the former are mainly farther north than the latter. Madrid's life expectancy is the highest at an average of just over 85, independently of gender, followed by Castilla y León (84 years and two-and-a-

Welcome to Salalah Salalah is the capital and largest city of the southern Omani governorates of Dhofar. Its population in 2009 was 197,169. Salalah is the second largest city in the Sultanate of Oman, and the largest city in the Dhofar Province. Salalah is the birthplace of the current sultan, Qaboos bin Said. Salalah attracts lots of people from other parts of Oman and the Persian Gulf region during the khareef season, which spans from July to September. The climate of the region and the monsoon allows the city to grow some vegetables and fruits like coconut and Banana. There are many farms within the city where these vegetables and fruits grow. History Salalah was the traditional capital of Dhofar, which reached the peak of prosperity in the 13th century thanks to the incense trade. Later it decayed, and in the 19th century it was absorbed by the Sultanate of Muscat. Between 1932 and 1970, Salalah was the capital of the Sultanate of Muscat and Oman under Said bin Taimur. After the latter's death, his son Qaboos decided to move the capital of Oman to

Muscat. The Sultan traditionally lives in Salalah rather than in Muscat, the capital and largest city in Oman; Qaboos has bucked this trend, and has lived in Muscat since he ascended to the throne in 1970. He does, however, visit Salalah fairly regularly to meet with influential tribal and local leaders; his last visit was in 2010 and before that he visited in 2006. In 2010, during the 40th anniversary of Sultan Qaboos' taking the throne, he decided to spend his time in Salalah. The 40th anniversary celebrations consisted of a massive parade. It lasted several hours and had an estimated 100,000 attendees. In 2011 the city hosted peaceful protests after the domino effect from the Arab Spring which lasted several months. Of the many requests filed from the protesters, some included the expulsion of the current ministers, job opportunities, salary increases, a solution to the increasing cost of living, and the establishment of Islamic banks

Climate The city has a hot desert climate, although summers are cooler than in more northern or inland parts of Oman. Salalah is very cloudy during the monsoon months of July and August, even though relatively little rain falls. Khareef means "autumn" in Arabic but it refers to monsoon when describing the region around Salalah. During this time, the brown landscape of Salalah and its surroundings is completely transformed to a beautiful and lush green. Language Arabic is the official language and the most spoken one. The unofficial, unwritten language known as Jeballi is the second most spoken language and the mother tongue of many in Salalah and its surrounding areas, with 25,000 estimated speakers as of 1993 English is the official foreign language and the most spoken language of the expats. Malayalam is another popular language and together with Tamil, Hindi/Urdu it is the most widely spoken language among expatriates.

I don't love her I’ve been seeing a girl who my parents are very keen on. We were introduced, although my family aren’t too heavy handed about arranged marriages, they have been very pushy with this girl. I haven’t met her parents yet, but the day is looming when I will meet all her family and introduce my family to hers. She’s very nice, but in all honesty I want to finish with her as I have feelings for a girl at work, and I am pretty sure she likes me too - I think it could be the real thing. I am kind of in deep though with the first girl - my parents talk about our wedding day whenever we are all together, and it’s just making things worse. I am starting to panic and feel hemmed in – I want to run away and not come back – it’s making me ill. She thinks we are serious and I don’t want to hurt her, but I’ve wanted to finish it for a long time. I have the chance to stay with a mate who lives by the coast - he said I can go and stay with him anytime and I can let off steam. You have to finish this relationship soon. No good will come from continuing with it. You will end up hurting a lot of people in the long run. Firstly, speak to your girlfriend and put an end to things. Then tell your parents you have finished with this girl. Don’t do it the other way around and tell your parents first, because they might try to persuade you otherwise. Then go and stay with your friend for a holiday. Hopefully by the time you get back, the dust will have settled. WRITE TO SARA IN CONFIDENCE. A PSEUDONYM WILL BE USED IF YOU WISH. Scandalous Spanish politics In recent years, Spain’s Popular Party (PP) has been defending itself from accusations of corruption related to the so-called “Gürtel case” with an accusation of its own: the Socialist Party (PSOE)’s involvement in the “ERE case.” A frequent line used against the Socialists is that “they stole a billion euros of public money that was meant to fight unemployment.” That figure, however, is exaggerated – prosecutors estimate the total at €680 million – and the facts of the case show that there was no personal gain by the main political leaders caught up in the scandal. When the Gürtel ruling came out in May of last year, it certified that the PP had benefited from the crimes committed by a corrupt business network, which was engaged in a kickbacks-for-contracts scheme. The PSOE rode the wave of public anger to lead a successful no-confidence motion against the conservative government of then-Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, who was unseated and replaced by current caretaker Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez of the PSOE. Recent convictions in the ERE case are providing fresh ammunition in the PPPSOE battle over corruption. So what are the differences and similarities between the two judicial probes, both of which have damaged the image of Spain’s two main political parties? The mechanism. The Gürtel case was “a veritable and efficient system of

institutional corruption through mechanisms aimed at manipulating public contracts,” according to the main ruling in a case that was broken up into several separate probes. The ERE case, in contrast, is a system of public subsidies for struggling companies that deliberately bypassed preliminary investigation by the regional government. This enabled funds to be irregularly channelled to dozens of workers and companies for an entire

probe found that more than €20 million in public contracts were compromised, although this amount could be much higher when other pending cases enter the trial stage. One of these side probes is investigating the PP’s parallel accounts, where former treasurer Luis Bárcenas took note of corporate donations between 1993 and 2009 worth over €8 million, all of it undeclared to tax authorities. In the ERE case, the companies in

representing a fraud of around €12 million, according to the investigation. These two amounts were not part of last week’s ruling and will be dealt with at separate trials. The ruling includes a graph with the amount of money allocated between 2000 and 2009 by the fraudulent system, which adds up to €680 million. Illegal party financing. In the Gürtel case, the court found that part of the money earned by the corrupt network

Francisco Correa , Alberto López Viejo and Luis Bárcenas.

decade, according to the investigation. Economic impact. In the Gürtel case, the businesses controlled by the ringleader, Francisco Correa, benefited from rigged government contracts and from commissions charged for mediating in business transactions involving PP administrations. The Gürtel

charge of managing the insurance policies for early retirement payments overcharged in excess of €66 million for their services, the probe shows. At least 141 of the 6,000 employees who benefited from the aid were not in fact working for the companies undergoing collective dismissal (ERE) procedures,

through rigged contracts was used to pay for some of the PP’s campaign events, meaning that there was illegal party financing. In the ERE case, investigators uncovered favourable treatment for companies in specific municipalities run by the PSOE, or for businesses owned by

former PSOE leaders. There is no indication that there was illegal party financing, even though the first investigating judge, Mercedes Alaya, suggested as much without citing any evidence. Illicit personal gain by politicians. One of the key figures to be convicted at the main Gürtel trial is Alberto López Viejo, who was a high-ranking official in the Madrid regional government. He was found guilty of taking illegal commissions in exchange for awarding contracts. In the ERE case, neither the two former regional premiers nor their department chiefs have been accused of personal gain as a result of the way they handled the public subsidies for struggling companies. Prison terms. In the Gürtel case, five former high-ranking officials from the PP (one member of Congress, two mayors and two treasurers) received lengthy prison sentences. Another 24 people were sentenced to jail. The ruling also found the PP itself, as a legal entity, guilty of benefiting from the crimes that were committed by the corrupt network. Ten people have been given prison terms for misuse of public funds in the ERE case, including former regional premier José Antonio Griñán and two exdepartment chiefs, José Antonio Viera and Antonio Fernández. Meanwhile, another former regional premier, Manuel Chaves, has been barred from holding public office for nine years.

Ryanair will not change baggage policy despite court ruling Following our report (26th November p22) on the recent court case, low-cost carrier Ryanair says it has no plans to change its hand luggage policies despite losing the Madrid court case over charging a passenger for carrying a small handbag. Until two years ago, Ryanair allowed passengers to take two hand-luggage items – a small suitcase of 40 x 20 x 55 centimetres, and a bag of 35 x 20 x 20 centimetres, provided the latter would fit under the seat in front. On busy flights or for those boarding last, the larger case sometimes had to be placed in the hold at the departure gate free of charge. Doing this became obligatory from January 2018 for anyone who did not pay the additional fee for priority boarding, but most customers were unfazed by this – given that they could see their cases being loaded as they boarded the aircraft, they knew these were safe and would not become lost, and many customers offered their bags at the boarding gate or even requested they went into the hold, so they did not have to carry them. A year ago, this changed:

News

CostaBlancaPeople 3rd December - 9th December 2019

anyone not paying for priority boarding would have to check their larger bag in at the main desk for a fee, albeit a smaller fee than the typical €30 to €50 for a full-sized suitcase, which would often literally double the cost of the flight. These changes have been largely criticised – although championed by others, who say this allows them to take large liquid stashes and sharp items without having to pay up to €50

for a suitcase – and latest figures show that Ryanair has found the new system to be a useful profitgenerating exercise. In the first half of this year, the company's profits rose by 28% thanks to priority boarding and checked-in small-case fees. Ryanair still obliges anyone who turns up at the gate with a bag which is too large, or with more than one bag when they have not booked priority boarding, to pay a fee in cash to place it in the hold. And magistrate Bárbara María Córdoba says the carrier went too far on this occasion.

A woman flying from Madrid to Brussels with a non-priority ticket was stopped at the gate, as she was carrying a 35 x 20 x 20centimetre bag, and also a small handbag. They ordered her to pay €20 in cash to check the larger of the two into the hold when it was shown she was unable to squash her handbag inside it. In finding the verdict in favour of the passenger, the magistrate cited the national Law of Air Navigation, which requires airlines to transport hand luggage at no extra cost. Ryanair cited the European regulation CE1008/2008, which states that airlines are permitted to charge whatever they choose for their services. This ruling considers that checked-in luggage is not an 'indispensable service', and also that suitcases travelling in the hold create a cost for the airline – that of baggage-handling and ground staff, who also have to bear the responsibility for the safe delivery of the suitcase to its correct destination. Ryanair was ordered to refund the passenger her €20, and also pay her €10 in compensation for the stress and anxiety she suffered at the boarding gate.

Save energy and money in your home

WHICH TYPE OF SELLER ARE YOU? Rebecca Serwotka Rebecca Serwotka - Your favourite local property expert, of Inmobiliaria Real Estate Agents in Ciudad Quesada & published author of “Moving Forward - 25 Essential Rules For Buying & Selling Real Estate Without Going Crazy.” Request your FREE copy today!Featured on Best Buy Spain - Property TV.

Selling properties on the Costa Blanca for 30 years, means I’ve met with thousands, yes thousands, of very interesting local home sellers along the way. I’ve noticed sellers fall into different categories. See if you recognize yourself in any of the groups? Which type of home seller are you? Are you the EMOTIONAL SELLER? “I have to like my buyer, as I only want to sell to someone that will appreciate the blood, sweat and tears I’ve put in to making this house a home.” Maybe you’re more of a PRICE FIXER? “I don’t care who buys, as long as they pay my price.” Or are you THE WAITER, kind of seller? “I’m not in any hurry to sell, and if noone wants to buy it, then I’m quite happy to wait.” Actually, they’re all the same, deep down. Every one of these “types,” ultimately wants to sell their property. If not, they wouldn’t have been on the market in the first place. All would like to achieve the same goal, and that is, to sell. Let me break it down: The EMOTIONAL SELLER, does want to sell. It’s just they feel uncomfortable with the thought that if someone buys their home, they’ll start throwing things out and changing everything. They think, if they like their buyer, maybe they’ll make them feel guilty enough, that they daren’t change anything. If you’re an EMOTIONAL SELLER, don’t let your feelings take over you. Your buyer obviously likes the home as much as you did, when you originally bought it, so

look at it more as a business deal, and push your feelings aside. The PRICE FIXER, wants to sell too! They’ve done their homework, and feel they’re competitively priced. They haven’t increased their asking price to allow for a cheeky offer. However, if you’re a PRICE FIXER type of seller, you stand the chance of being too fixated on a number, of which can mean you could lose out on a sale. The market will determine your price, so be open to a little sensible negotiating. The WAITER. Of course they also want to sell. However they’ve convinced themselves, that if no buyer comes along at the price they’ve chosen, they’ll resign to staying put. If you see yourself as, THE WAITER type of seller, the solution to this is… price fixes everything. There is a buyer out there for every home, so don’t be negative and think that just because no one has made you an offer, you can mask your emotion with “I’m in no hurry to sell,” thoughts. Price will ultimately dictate how many viewings you have, and bring forward an offer. You see, it really doesn’t matter which category of seller you can see yourself in. If you’re on the market, you must want the property sold! Selling your home? Enjoy the journey!

Due to a tremendous year of home sales, we are in need of more properties to sell. If you’re ready to sell your home, or have been on the market for sale with no offers, contact me today on 966 718 392 or email: sales@homes4u.es. We ARE the resale specialists. “We sell houses! It’s what we do, it’s all we do!” “It’s what we’re good at!" See our advert in the centre pages of this newspaper. www.homes4u.es

As we come into autumn and winter in Spain, we tend to be at home more and become more aware of how much energy we are using. The shift to a cleaner, more sustainable and economic energy model can start in every household and the best way to achieve reduced energy consumption is by applying energy-saving measures at different levels; from optimising the use of the refrigerator to an energy audit. When it comes to the fridge for example you can optimize the number of times it is opened, ensure to clean the back periodically, and that it is at least 5 centimetres away from the wall to facilitate ventilation. You can adjust the thermostat to prevent it from cooling more than necessary, the freezer should be adjusted to -18 degrees and the fridge to 6 degrees. As for air conditioning systems, if it is a gas boiler, the radiators should be purged periodically to avoid air in the installation. Also, adjust the thermostat between 18 and 21 degrees to have optimum comfort conditions. If there are radiators or electric stoves the

thermostat temperature should be regulated between 18 and 21 degrees and timers can be added to the radiators to ensure that they only work as long as necessary, and put them under the windows or in the coldest walls of the home (those that are in contact with the outside). With the water system, it is recommended to collect the cold water that comes out of the shower before it gets hot, and using it for washing. If you don't have a double flush cistern in the tank, place a bottle inside the cistern to reduce the consumption of water in each use and, of course, reduce the time of use in the shower. Another way to save at home is to install equipment that reduces the energy demand such as timers for electric water heaters. You can also use energy-saving bulbs or LEDs that have lower electrical power than conventional bulbs, strips for windows and doors to reduce air filtering in. Implementing measures to save energy will be easy, effective and you can see the reduction of energy expenditure as the months go by.

Spain seizes drug sub

Authorities in the Spanish region of Galicia have seized a semisubmersible submarine carrying more than 3,000 kilograms (6,614 pounds) of cocaine. The drugs are thought to have originated in Colombia but authorities are still investigating, according to a spokesman for the Civil Guard. The vessel was seized recently off the coast of the port of Aldan. Two of the three crew members operating the 22 meter-long (72 feet) vessel were arrested. Both are Ecuadorian nationals, according to the Civil Guard spokesman, who said that authorities are looking for the third crew member. The submarine was detected as a result of an "international operation" that involved Spanish Customs, Spanish National Police and the Civil Guard. Central and South American drug cartels have increasingly used semi-submersible submarines to transport drugs into the US. The vessels are not believed to be as common in Europe, however. They are expensive to build and must be

constructed in remote areas like the jungle to avoid detection. Once in the water, they are tough to detect without any prior intelligence or aircraft that spot them from above. Spain’s Civil Guard managed to refloat what’s been described as the first narco-submarine ever intercepted in European waters. The efforts to raise the sub met with several setbacks, including bad weather and the fact that two of the ropes that divers had attached to the vessel broke while it was being towed to port. It was finally re-floted in the port of Aldan. The sub is believed to have been carrying around 3,000 kilograms of cocaine from Colombia that was going to be delivered in Galicia, where local drug clans have been operating for decades along its rugged coastline. Investigators believe the 22meter submarine was built in a clandestine shipyard in South America, probably in Suriname or Guyana, and that it was a singleuse vessel.

Narcotics officers in Spain had been hearing for years about the existence of these vessels from their informants, but none had ever been seized in Europe. “Nobody had seen this one before, not the Colombians either,” said a source familiar with the investigation. “They had been traveling for over 20 days, and spent another seven days waiting at various points for someone to come pick up the drug, but nobody showed up and the conditions at sea got worse,” said this source. The vessel was ultimately abandoned near Hío beach, where dozens of police officers were hiding in a bid to witness the drug transfer from the sub to the pick-up boat, following the tip-off from the US. But nobody showed up. Now, investigators are trying to determine which Galician drug clan was supposed to pick up this particular shipment: “It’s got to be a powerful one, if they can afford to spend €1.5 million on a singleuse submarine.”

Dancing the night away

Overseas Supermarkets Orihuela Costa Poppy Appeal 2019

A magnificent €413 was raised recently at The Pines Restaurant in Benijofar for local charity Huntingtons Disease Association. The event was hosted by Michael Hack and Rob Roberts, who kept everyone entertained for the whole evening with, singing, dancing and a mini quiz. Coincidentally, two of the diners were celebrating their birthdays and so Marion Smith, President of the Association surprised both of them with a special birthday cake each. Money raised will go towards helping local sufferers of Huntingtons and their families. For more information about Huntingtons, please visit www.hda.org, or telephone: 711008250

Once again the Orihuela Costa and District Branch of the Royal British Legion were welcomed into the San Javier branch of Overseas Supermarkets, where they were based for more than 3 weeks, collecting €2786 in the process, monies that will stay in Spain to help veterans and their families. It seems to be that people are now

beginning to understand that it is not just the families of the “old people” from WW2 who need help, but also the veterans from more recent wars, such as the Falklands, Iraq, Afghanistan as well as the troubles in N Ireland. Coordinator Diana Wiltshire would like to thank the manager, David Jones, and all his staff, for their support, and also her

Book signing for Paradise Rescue There will be a book signing event at The Welcome Inn, Benimar 2, Rojales, from 7pm on Wednesday 4th December with Mary-Ann Dunning, Dr Lesley Hunter and Kennel owner, Colleen Jay. The book entitled “Paradise to the Rescue” is about dog rescue in Spain. It contains a series of real life stories illustrating the good, the bad and sometimes ugly reality of dog rescue in Spain with sad beginnings but lots of very happy endings. It also contains hints and tips, vet advice, expert information with pet passports and information about Spanish

breeds. It’s all about dogs that have been rescued and rehomed by Paradise Rescue Kennels, with

lots of doggy photos. It has a foreword by Lorraine Kelly OBE. who starts by saying “This is a remarkable book and shows the compassion, love and kindness that goes into rescuing these wonderful animals...” The book is dedicated to all dog rescuers and all proceeds will go to Paradise Rescue Kennels. It’s available on Amazon and will be in local outlets in Benijófar, La Murada and Pilar De la Horadada. It is also for sale through the Paradise Rescue Kennels Facebook Page, where further information can be found.

San Javier Golf Society give HELP a boost On Wednesday 20th November Christine Baillie the President of HELP Murcia Mar Menor was invited to La Serena Golf Club in Los Alcazares by Ty Williams the Captain of the San Javier Golf Society and presented with a cheque for €500. Each year the Society hold a charity day and the proceeds are donated to a chosen charity and this year HELP was lucky enough to be picked. Accepting the donation Christine along with Vice President Ann Shepersonwas able to take the opportunity to explain the work that HELP dos to help people in the Mar Menor area and further afield in the Murcia region.

“This money will help us to carry on our work” she said “There are lots of people in need of extra help after the floods and HELP is doing what it can to make life easier for them” She was also able to get a plug in for the HELP Outlet in the Oasis Centre at Los Alcazares which along with a weekly car boot sale at the Autocine are the main sources of income for the Charity. “team”, Brian & Sylvia Tanner, Malcolm & Chris Cavendish, Walter and Sue Shatford, Jo and Denis Gill, Bernie Hall, and especially her partner, Patrice Satur, who did far more than his fair share of “shifts” and of course helped me to prepare and take down all the fixtures and fittings. In addition to the collection at San Javier, for the very first time there were volunteers also in place at the two other Overseas stores situated on the Orihuela Costa, both of them opened in the last year or so, Campoverde and Lomas de Cabo Roig. The collectors were supervised by Mo Davin and Eddie Coleman respectively with the appeals at both stores expanding the local total. The amount collected at Campoverde was €845 while €1991 was donated by RBL supporters at Cabo Roig, bringing the final total contributed at the three stores to €5622, a massive amount that will bring real benefits to those veterans who need assistance here in Spain. The branch would like to thank all three managers for the hospitality and

support they provided to RBL collectors during the period and to the Head Office in Benissa for welcoming our volunteers into their branches.

Quirónsalud Alicante and Torrevieja Hospitals implement 3D organ-printing technology to improve results in oncology surgery. Thanks to 3D organprinting technology, the surgeon can obtain an accurate physical model of the organ and the tumour, to plan its removal and simulate the surgery on this particular organ. “The benefit to the patient,” points out Doctor Pedro Bretcha, Head of the Surgical Oncology Unit at Quirónsalud Alicante and Torrevieja, “is to minimise relapse, since it increases the possibilities of obtaining clean surgical

the same way for all types of cancers, but it is “clearly beneficial for solid-organ tumours, such as liver or pancreatic surgery, in which the surrounding organs or vasculature can be implicated, as can sarcomas, pelvic organs, etc.,” states the surgeon.

How 3D Organ Printing Works In order to print 3D organs, a multidisciplinary team made up of radiologists and bioengineers submits the patient to a radiological examination, performing a highdefinition CT scan or resonance. The images obtained go through a postprocess of treatment and fusion using a specific software that allows the team to obtain images in three-dimensional format, obtaining an exact replica of the organ, thanks to cutting-edge 3D printers. “Thanks to this replica, we, the surgeons, can decide what structures are the most relevant, in order to perform a better resection of the tumour,” concludes Doctor José Farré, an Oncological Surgeon with the Unit.

BBC announces its Christmas TV lineup The BBC has revealed their fun-packed Christmas TV line-up for 2019, with a number of big dramas and series on Christmas Day and all over the festive period. EastEnders fans were told an "explosive" storyline would air on Christmas Day, as Sharon Mitchell and Keanu Taylor's baby secret comes to light. It's now also been confirmed that Gavin and Stacey's Christmas special will also air on Christmas Day, while the festive edition of Call The Midwife will also

be on the box for an un-missable episode. Fans of Mrs Brown's Boys will get an extra treat, with two episodes on the BBC over Christmas and New Year. Doctor Who fans aren't being missed out either, with the Time Lord back on screens at some point too. Another return of sorts is Miranda, with a celebratory special Miranda: My Such Fun Celebration featuring the cast and crew looking back at the sitcom's highlights 10 years after it first aired. Obviously it wouldn't be Christmas on

the BBC without The Queen's Christmas Message, or the festive edition of Strictly Come Dancing starring some old favourites. Other hit shows getting an Xmas edition include Still Open All Hours, Not Going Out and Top Gear. But that's not all, as there's plenty new bits and bobs on the channel coming in a matter of weeks. Holly Willoughby and Bradley Walsh's new one-off show is making its debut too, Take Off With Bradley and Holly. There's A Christmas Carol, starring Guy Pearce, and an

adaptation of Dracula by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss to look forward to. Joining them is new drama The Trial Of Christine Keeler, starring James Norton, Ellie Bamber and Emilia Fox. There's also animations including the Snail And The Whale and Mimi And The Mountain Dragon. But it doesn't stop there, with comedian Michael McIntyre's Big Christmas Show back, with guests including Strictly judge Craig Revel Horwood and Sharon Osbourne. Some familiar faces including Mary

Berry, Lucy Worsley and Gareth Malone also appear in different shows, as does Hugh Grant. Worzel Gummidge, starring Mackenzie Crook, will also air over Christmas alongside Doctor Who, with Jodie Whittaker returning as the Time Lord. Music fans also have some things to look forward too, including a film on Liam Gallagher, The Magic Flute from Glyndebourne and a new documentary about Dolly Parton.

Aldi has a secret bargain hour If you're a keen Aldi shopper, you'll know that there are plenty of bargains to be had at all times. From bargain bottles of award-winning wine, to the store's famous special buys, there really is something to please everyone, without breaking the bank. However, what you may not know is that the store has a 'bargain hour', when it reduces the food which is about to

expire by 50 percent. Right now you're probably thinking that the best time to head to Aldi to find these half price bargains is at the end of the day, but that's not always the case. Several shoppers across Europe have reported finding items with 50 percent off labels at opening time - which is 9am for many stores in Spain. It does vary from store to store, so

you're best contacting your local branch if you want to find out the best time to go to get your hands on stickered items. Speaking about the reduction hour, a spokesperson for Aldi said: "All items are reduced to 50 percent of the recommend sales price before stores open on their best before or use by dates." So if you want to grab yourself a bargain, get to Aldi bright and early!

London named most vegan friendly city in the world London has been named the most vegan-friendly city in the world for the second year running by online vegan restaurant guide Happy Cow. Berlin, New York and Los Angeles also rank high in the 2019 list – with Bangkok in the top 10 for the first time. vegan 125 to Home restaurants – including eateries serving plant-based takes on fried chicken, sushi and pizza – London’s meat-free scene has gone mainstream in recent years. In 2017 it was the first city on the Happy Cow list to reach vegan completely 100 restaurants – perhaps not surprising for a city with its own vegan hair salon.

The Happy Cow list ranks cities according to three factors: the number of vegan restaurants in a five-mile radius within the most vegan-restaurant-dense area in each city; the number of vegan, with restaurants vegetarian or veggie menu options in the same five-mile radius; and Happy Cow’s impression of the overall veganfriendliness of each city. Some of Happy Cow’s favourites include PickyWops, Purezza and Death by Pizza – all examples of the city’s flourishing vegan pizza scene. It also references the world’s first vegan chicken shop, The Temple of Seitan, Japanese food at Itadakizen, and Caribbean-

inspired cuisine at Rogue Vegan. As well as its restaurants, Happy Cow also recommends London for its abundance of vegan-friendly stalls, bakeries, cafes and smoothie bars – and the UK’s first plant-based cheese shop, La Fauxmagerie. Non-food favourites include shops such as clothing brand The Third Estate and hair salon The Rabbit Hole Vegan Hair Parlour. According to The Vegan Society, the number of vegans in the UK quadrupled between 2014 and 2019 to 600,000. At the current growth rate, it predicts vegans and vegetarians will make up a quarter of the population by 2025, and flexitarians just under half.

Food Predictions for 2020 From cauliflower pizza crust and cheese tea to faux meat snacks and monster shakes, 2019 was packed with more than a few crazy food trends - some of which might be here to stay, while others, thankfully, will fade away (looking at you, hot dog ice cream). But a new year means new trends, and we're looking ahead to 2020 already. You might as well stay ahead of the curve, so you can stock up on these foods before they start flying off the shelves. Given the surging popularity of the keto diet, it's no surprise that there's been an influx of snacks that are low in carbs and free of additives and preservatives. Additionally, as the plant-based diet gains steam, companies are introducing a diverse selection of products that focus on vegetables, fruit, grains, and other whole foods. And as more busy shoppers adjust to flexible eating schedules, don't be surprised if you see an increasing variety of healthier grab-and-go options in the refrigerated section of the grocery store. Seed butters taking over from nut butters It's time to think beyond nut butter - seeds are slated to be the star of the show where these spreadable products are concerned. According to the food forecast for 2020, you can expect more unique options than the

typical sunflower seed butter, too - like 88 Acres' Watermelon Seed Butter and Roasted Pumpkin Seed Butter. West African foods Traditional West African flavors will be making their way into more food products in 2020, according to market's predictions. If you're on board with the trend, try YolĂŠlĂŠ Fonio, a high-protein ancient grain that makes a stellar substitute for rice or quinoa, or the Kuli Kuli Superfood Energy Bar in Black Cherry, which is packed with half a cup of vegetables thanks to the tropical leafy green moringa. Flexitarian burgers Gone are the days when you were either a meat-eater or a vegetarian. As more people try to strike a compromise by adopting a flexitarian diet, Innova Market Insights predicts that more food companies will offer hybrid items

including both plant-based ingredients as well as animalbased proteins. Flexitarians will find a plethora of new products that capitalise on this trend - like The Great Organic Beef & Mushroom Blended Burger and Turkey & Mushroom Blended Burger. These blends are perfect for the health-conscious carnivore who's looking to boost their veggie consumption without giving up meat entirely. Cauliflower-based convenience foods It's no secret that cauliflower has been the leading flour and rice substitute for those adhering to a Celiac disease or gluten-free diet. According to the food trend forecast for 2020, many food companies are catching on, which explains the slew of new cauliflower-based products - like Cauli Mac & Cheese and Green Giant Garlic & Herb Mashed Cauliflower.

What Is Oprah's latest diet? For decades, people have been fascinated by all things Oprah, including any diet she follows and recommends. The latest is called The OMD Plan, in which OMD stands for One Meal a Day. This doesn’t mean limiting yourself to a single daily meal, but rather making a commitment to eat one plant based meal per day - a change that can improve your health and positively impact on the planet. The OMD Plan was created by Suzy Amis Cameron, environmentalist and cofounder of MUSE, a private school in Calabasas, California with an entirely plant-based kitchen that just won the Greenest Restaurant in the World award. Suzy recently appeared on Oprah’s SuperSoul Sunday to talk about the plan and her corresponding book, which includes dozens of her family’s plantbased recipes. Oprah, who is on board, started a 30-day OMD challenge, and she's filmed a kitchen video with Suzy that features the book’s veggie spring rolls. According to Suzy, simply making one of your daily meals plant-based helps save water and trees, reduce greenhouse gases, and even protect endangered animals. At the same time, the switch improves overall health and reduces the risk of chronic diseases, including heart disease, cancer, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. The book includes a 14-day meal plan and dozens of recipes, like chia pudding, smoothies, sweet potato hummus, homemade falafel, spaghetti Bolognese (made with Beyond Meat), and even desserts, like vegan carrot cake and chocolate mousse.

It also contains helpful info and resources. One stat that really strikes home is this: When just one person chooses to make one of their daily meals plant-based, it saves approximately 200,000 gallons of water, and it saves the carbon equivalent of driving from

Madrid to Orihuela Costa over one year's time. Kitchen tips include how to make your own nut milk, soak beans, and pickle vegetables. The book also offers graband-go options and explains how to shop for and store a number of plant foods. After she and her husband (director James Cameron) went vegan, Suzy became somewhat of an evangelist for plant-based eating. But she found that many people were overwhelmed by the idea of becoming entirely plant-based overnight. Making just one meal a day plant-based, however, was doable.

Oprah calls the plan “graspable.” Suzy refers to it as “the simple, elegant solution,” and believes that this one small shift can help you lose weight, improve energy, support glowing skin and hair, improve health, save money, enhance your sex life, and simultaneously help save the planet. The book is peppered with stories of people who have adopted the plan, with results that include substantial weight loss, better mental focus, decreased bloating, clearer skin, and improved health markers, like lower blood pressure. Experts claim that OMD is smart, empowering, and sustainable. If you choose healthy, whole-food, plant-based meals, you will instantly boost your intake of health-protective vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, phytonutrients, and fiber. It’s also important, because the climate crisis is a public health emergency, with implications that include food insecurity, water safety risks, air pollution, and diseases carried by insects. According to scientists, the food we eat plays a major role in climate conditions, including the production of one third of all global greenhouse gas emissions. Bottom line: The OMD Plan is in line with current nutrition recommendations, such as The Planetary Diet, which calls for drastically reducing animal-based foods and eating more plants. But OMD is simpler, more straightforward, and easy to put into action. I love Oprah’s word, “graspable,” and Oprah herself - for spreading the word about this simple approach to improve your future health, and support the home we all share: Earth.

Brussels asks Madrid to use Women across Spain march cost savings to lower debt against gender violence Thanks to the policies of the European Central Bank (ECB), Spain could save up to €22.3 billion over the next four years if interest rates remain stable. Such savings would create a significant buffer for the next government, which will have to deal with persistently high debt levels. Madrid will also have to send Brussels a new budget plan with corrective measures that are not included in the latest draft it gave to EU authorities. In fact, Brussels is already telling Madrid to use those savings exclusively to reduce the debt-to-GDP ratio, which is close to 100 percent and has barely come down in the last five years. With the economy now showing signs of a slowdown, it is unlikely that the state will be collecting extra tax revenue, so any additional income is expected to come from the

historically low interest rates, as it has never been this easy for Spain to borrow money. Following the ECB’s round of stimulus for the eurozone, Spain

has even issued five-year bonds at negative rates of -0.084 percent, in sharp contrast with the year 2012, when soaring borrowing costs at the height of the crisis fueled fears of a fullblown bailout. Its 10-year bond is now going for a rate of 0.54 percent. Brussels had already made its debt reduction recommendation last year, extending it to Spain and other countries. But last week, at the annual assessment of national

budgets known as the Autumn Fiscal Package, European Commission Vice President Valdis Dombrovskis made a point of underscoring it. “Belgium, Spain and France have very high debtto-GDP ratios, of almost 100 percent. Italy’s exceeds 136 percent of GDP. And these countries are not expected to meet the debt rule,” he said. “These four countries have not sufficiently used favourable economic times to put their public finances in order. In 2020, they plan either no meaningful fiscal adjustment or even a fiscal expansion.” The Independent Authority for Spanish Fiscal Responsibility (AIReF), an oversight agency created in 2013, believes that if rates remain at current levels, savings could reach €22.3 billion in four years: around €2.3 billion in 2020, €4.5 billion in 2021, €6.8 billion in 2022 and €8.7 billion in 2023.

Tens of thousands of people took to the streets of Spain recently to take part in marches called across the country for the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. This year, the marches had a clear target: the far-right party Vox, which completely denies the existence of gender violence. In Madrid, around 8,000 people took part in the march, according to Spain’s National Police. The men and women could be heard shouting: “Listen Vox, the victims have a voice.” In Valencia, municipal sources put the number of protesters at 20,000. “We will not let the far right block gender-equality policies,” said Rosa Solbes, a feminist from the journalist collective Les Beatrius, during the march. Vox has been heavily criticized for its refusal to recognise the existence of gender violence, which has claimed more than 1,000 lives in Spain since official records began in 2003. The farright party has been using its new position in regional and local governments to block institutional declarations against gender violence. At the march in Madrid, which was attended by various members of the Socialist Party (PSOE) caretaker government and led by interim Equality Minister

Carmen Calvo, organisers read out a statement that attacked the “intrusion of far-right parties and organisations in our country, with their sexist and denial-driven discourse.”The organisers warned that the “patriarchy was rearming itself” with “backwards and discriminatory” claims. But the sharpest criticism came from gender violence victim Nadia Otmani, who was shot three times by her brother-in-law while defending her sister and left paralysed. From her wheelchair, she confronted Vox’s spokesperson in Madrid, Javier Ortega Smith, during an event at Madrid City Hall. “Don’t use gender violence to do politics,” she said. Ortega Smith did not look her in the eye while she spoke. The most recent victim is Sara, a 26-year-old who was killed last Monday by her partner Jaime in Tenerife, in Spain’s Canary Islands. Her grandmother had tried to save her but was unable to. The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women was created in tribute to the three Mirabal sisters, who were murdered by the dictator Rafael Trujillo in the Dominican Republic in 1960, to raise awareness of all violence suffered by women, including institutional violence, trafficking, genital mutilation and sexual violence.

Orihuela Orihuela marked the day held on 25th November with a march of councillors, dignitaries and associations linked to equality such as: Association of Women Clara Campoamor, Red Cross Orihuela, Vega Baja Acoge, Association of New Women for the 3rd Millennium and Social Forum. The symbolic march paid tribute to the victims of this social scourge, and made its way through the city streets with the local community joining in every step. The march ended at the Gabriel Miró Roundabout with the reading of a manifesto by Belén Cascales, representative of the Social Forum. This year, the floor of the Glorieta Gabriel Miró was decorated with mauve paper butterflies, made by more than 150 students from different schools across the municipality of Orihuela. The butterflies represented the memory of the child victims of gender violence. The Mayor of Orihuela and the councillor for Equality laid a bouquet of flowers before the sculpture which was illuminated in purple. The memorial continued with the sticking of obituaries on a mural in memory of the victims killed in this last year and ended with the musical performance of singer Elisa Chumillas.

San Fulgencio’s ‘Purple Monday’ Along with many other municipalities across Spain, San Fulgencio took part in the International Day Against Violence Towards Women on November 25th.

Hall Offices. Councillor for Social Services (URB), Samantha Hull, said: “This has been such an impressive display of solidarity from the people of San Fulgencio, and

there is no doubt the event has raised the awareness of the issue of gender violence that sadly is on the increase in Spain. I want to thank everyone that gave their time to create the butterflies and who helped us on the day itself.”

Both in San Fulgencio Village and in Urbanisation La Marina, a large number of women had, for some time, been making the purple butterfly symbols from a multitude of materials. These were proudly sported on the day by many people, with the majority of them making up the two wonderful displays of butterflies ‘caught in the net’ in the Plaza Constitución and in front of the Urbanisation Town

Time to honour local heroes

THIS coming Friday, December 6th, will be the day the people of San Fulgencio get their opportunity to say ‘thank you’ to all those that helped during the devastating floods that hit the area on September 12th and

13th. Beginning at 11am in San Fulgencio Village, there will be a full programme of events paying homage and tribute to the many organisations, associations and individuals that played their part

during and in the aftermath of the worst storms to hit the area for 140 years. After gathering at the Plaza España, there will be an unveiling of a special plaque at 11.30am followed by a parade through the streets of the village before arriving at the Recinto Multiusos centre for Ceremony of Appreciation from 12.30pm. This will be followed by a Giant Paella and drinks at 2pm. Everyone is welcome to come along on this Spanish National Holiday and show their support to those that played their part in the important rescue and relief efforts.

Alcoholics Anonymous With the impending festive season, many of us are busy planning parties, meals out and all sorts of get-togethers with family and friends. At this time of year, those who struggle with alcohol can find it tough to stay in control – especially because culturally, we are surrounded by alcohol for much of the month of December. Throughout the Christmas season and beyond the AA is available for support. Many people turn to the AA at Christmastime – whether to find out more, or to attend their first meeting in the hope of taking the first step on the road to recovery. What is AA? Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. There are no dues or fees for AA membership, they are self supporting through their own contributions. AA is not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organisation or institution, does not wish to engage in any controversy, neither endorses nor

opposes any causes. The AA’s primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety. As from January 2020, each month, the Costa Blanca People is going to share a real life story from real people about what it is like to suffer from Alcholism, what they did to overcome their addiction, and how they lead their lives today on their road of

recovery. Do you have a problem with Alcohol? Is Alcohol costing you more than money? If you can answer yes to one or both of these questions, contact the AA for help. Costa Blanca North: 0034 648 169 045 Costa Blanca South: 0034 625 912 078 www.aa-costablancasouth.com

How long is too long to have a cough? Ask yourself these questions to help determine when a lingering cough may actually be something to worry about. A little coughing can be a good thing. It’s your body’s way of expelling microbes, allergens, and other unwanted invaders in your airways. Most coughs go away on their own in a few days or a couple of weeks. But some coughs can linger, lasting a month or longer, and might make you wonder if something more serious is going on. How long have I had the cough and is it getting better? This may be your main clue that something is amiss. Most coughs–like the ones caused by colds and the flu–go away on their own in four to six weeks. These coughs also tend to get better gradually as time passes. If a cough with no obvious cause lasts beyond the four-week mark, and definitely if any cough lasts longer than eight weeks, see your doctor. It’s probably nothing dire, but at the very least he or she may be able to relieve some of your discomfort. How bad is the cough? Is it just a polite, little ‘ahem’ that hardly anyone notices, or is it severe hacking that causes you to double over and others to move far, far away?

Extreme coughing may be a sign of something serious like an infection, but even if it’s not, a cough that interferes with your quality of life is reason enough to seek help. Am I coughing up coloured mucus? Average colds usually produce white or clear sputum. That isn’t a big deal. Yellow or green mucus, on the other hand, suggests a more serious infection or other underlying cause. If you are raising coloured sputum, you should see a doctor. The same goes if your chronic cough is making you tired or light-headed, results in chest or stomach pain, or causes your bladder to leak. Am I coughing up blood? That’s one of those alarm-bell symptoms that you really need to see your doctor. The most common cause is bronchitis, but you don’t want to assume that. It could also be pneumonia, COPD, a blood clot, tuberculosis, lung cancer, or an autoimmune disease such as lupus. Do I have other symptoms? If you have a runny nose and a sore throat, there’s a good chance the cough is just from a cold. Other symptoms, especially shortness of breath, could spell bigger trouble.

In the context of a cough this is very important because it can indicate a number of different things. Not being able to catch your breath could mean whooping cough (pertussis) or asthma. It could also mean tuberculosis, COPD, lung cancer, or heart failure. Asthma can come not only with a cough but also wheezing and chest tightness. Tuberculosis typically also causes weight loss, while swelling in your legs, especially when you’re lying down, could indicate heart failure. A fever could signal pneumonia, bronchitis, or whooping cough. See your doctor right away any time you have a high fever, if the cough or shortness of breath comes on suddenly, or if you have chest pain.

Nightmares may help you respond to fear Experiencing bad dreams at night can better prepare you to face scary situations during the day, a new study has found. Research conducted by the sleep department at the University of Geneva discovered that participants

who experienced scary dreams were much more likely to "respond to fearinducing situations effectively." In order to find out more, the scientists examined how the brain responds to different types of dreams.

By using a technique called highdensity electroencephalography (EEG), the dream researchers discovered that certain areas of the brain are responsible for our dreams. They attached over 250 electrodes to 18 subjects, and asked a further 89 participants to keep sleep diaries to track their emotions during the night. Their findings discovered that the greater frequency of frightening dreams, the more able the brain was to face frightening circumstances the following day. So, the next time you have a nightmare, you might find that you face challenges better the following day. Elsewhere in the study, scientists explained that dreams could even be used as a form of therapy for different types of anxiety. "Dreams may be considered as a real training for our future reactions and may potentially prepare us to face real life dangers," Lampros Perogamvros, a researcher explained. "If a certain threshold of fear is exceeded in a dream, it loses its beneficial role as an emotional regulator." While bad dreams can help us during the day, they found that more terrifying nightmares do however have a negative impact on our overall wellbeing.

Best strength exercises Every exercise in your strength program has a purpose — to help you build strength and muscle, burn fat and improve your fitness. From increased strength, better core stability, greater athleticism and improved overall health, these key exercises need to find their way into your routine. Goblet Squat In squats the load is held in front, the core works double-time to keep you tall, while your legs work to control your movement down and stand back up. How to: Hold a dumbbell or kettlebell with both hands underneath the “bell” at chest level. Set your feet shoulder-width apart with your toes pointing slightly outwards. Push your butt back like you’re sitting in a chair and descend until your elbows reach the inside of your knees. Keeping your heels flat on the floor, pause at the bottom of the squat and return to a full standing position. If your heels, push your hips further back and work on partial ranges of motion until mobility and form improve. Repeat for four sets of 8-10 reps.

Dumbbell Row Developing a strong back is key to balance things out, improve posture and avoid injury. The dumbbell row can help achieve all that, in addition to building a

strong core and arms. The main muscles being used are the lats, traps and rhomboids, which reinforce good posture by pulling your shoulders back. They also aid the core in stabilizing your spine. How to: Grab a dumbbell and find a bench. Start with your left hand on the bench with left arm extended, while your right arm holds the dumbbell and right foot is on the ground. Retract your shoulders, brace your abs and pull the weight up until the elbow passes the side of the body. Lower the weight with control and repeat for three sets of 6-8 reps on each side. Push-Up The push-up might appear basic, but it’s one of the best exercises you can do. The functional movement is great for training the upper-body pushing muscles — the anterior deltoids, triceps and chest. It also requires you to engage your core and allows full range of motion in your shoulder blades. How to: Start on your knees facing the floor with your hands at shoulder-width and planted directly under the shoulders. Get into a plank by straightening your legs and supporting your weight with hands and feet. Squeeze your backside to keep your trunk engaged and lower your body slowly to the ground. The elbows

should be slightly tucked — like arrows, rather than flared like the letter “T”. Descend until your chest is just above the ground and return to the starting position by fully extending your arms, and repeat (c). Note: If you can’t do five push-ups with good form, elevate your hands on a bench or chair to begin building up your strength. If they’re easy, try elevating your feet on a chair. Hip Extension One of the most important muscle groups for any trainee — athlete, weekend warrior, or newbie — is the glutes. Yet they are often neglected and underutilized from sitting for long periods each day. How to: Position the back of your shoulders across a stable bench, feet planted firmly on the ground, about six inches away from your butt. Squeezing the glutes, push through your heels to rise up into a bridge position with the hips

fully extended. The shoulders down to the knees should be in line, with the knees bent at 90 degrees. Hold the position at the top, glutes, core and hamstrings engaged. Lower the hips down and repeat for three sets of eight reps. Beginners can continue with just bodyweight, while advanced lifters can progress to rolling a barbell over the top of the hips.

Thirty meter telescope could be built in Spain The town hall of Puntagorda, a small municipality on La Palma in Spain’s Canary Islands, has opened the door to the construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT). All the paperwork to build the pioneering 18-story tall €1.2 billion-scientific installation in Puntagorda is now in order. It is just up to the consortium behind the project to decide whether it will push ahead with its original plans to build the TMT in Hawaii, or switch to Plan B: the Canary Islands. If approved, work on the project will begin in La Palma next year in spring. The consortium wants to build the TMT on the summit of Mauna Kea in Hawaii, but Native Hawaiians have been blocking the construction of the telescope because they believe the site is sacred. “We are excited and grateful to have been granted the building license in La Palma,” said sources from the consortium. “Mauna Kea continues to be the preferred site for the TMT, but this is a key step in the process to develop the Plan B site in La Palma, if it is not possible to build in Hawaii.” The TMT partners have called a meeting for November 23, and having approval to build in Puntagorda, could help the group decide what to do. But sources from the consortium explained that “currently, there is no set date to determine our next steps for the building of the TMT.” They added: “The TMT board of directors regularly meets. This is a scheduled meeting to follow the

evolution of the project both in Hawaii and in La Palma, as well as other issues.” The consortium, which is made up of universities in the United States (California Institute of Technology and the University of California), Japan, India, Canada and China, requested the building license from Puntagorda city hall a few weeks ago. Under the license, 10 hectares of land will be ceded to the Canary Astrophysics Institute (IAC). It is expected to take 10 years to build the telescope and its supporting installations. The project is likely to generate many jobs – and not only in the construction. Numerous technical positions will be needed to oversee the scientific project, and more work could come from the development of equipment for the TMT. The TMT group also hopes to be a “good neighbour” to La Palma, after facing opposition from Hawaii, and is expected to make significant investment in training and education. More than a dozen telescopes are already functioning on the peaks of La Palma, some of which are run by scientists and engineers from the area. The TMT project could multiply the work opportunities for these locals. Spanish scientists would also receive 10 percent of the TMT’s observing time to carry out their own astronomy projects. The TMT began facing problems in 2014, when work began on the project in Mauna Kea, the highest summit in Hawaii,

which the native people consider sacred. Although there are a dozen observatories already located on the summit, the Native Hawaiians had had enough. They blocked the roads and the building work was brought to a stop. A long legal battle ensued, which ended in July after a court gave the project the green light. But protesters began blocking the roads again. Four months later, the work is still at a standstill, and the project is beginning to fall out of favor with the public. Indeed, many high-profile scientists from the United States have asked for the telescope to be built in the Canary Islands. Spanish authorities at all levels, from Congress to the regional government of the Canary Islands, have shown public support for the construction of the TMT. What’s more, the scientific leaders behind the TMT project have discovered that La Palma has excellent conditions for observing space. Although they are not as good as in Mauna Kea (which is 4,200 kilometers above sea level – nearly 2,000 kilometers higher than La Palma), the operating costs in the Canary Islands would be half the €37 million needed for the site in Hawaii – an important saving for an instrument that is expected to last 50 years. The project, however, has received criticism from the Spanish environmental group Ben Magec, which says the TMT will harm the local environment, and has promised in the media to oppose the plans.

Twitter to remove inactive accounts & free up usernames Twitter is sending out emails to owners of inactive accounts with a warning: sign in by 11th December, or your account will be history and its username will be up for grabs again. Any account that hasn’t signed in for more than six months will receive the email alert. “As part of our commitment to serve the public conversation, we’re working to clean up inactive accounts to present more accurate, credible information people can trust across Twitter. Part of this effort is encouraging people to actively log-in and use Twitter when they register an account, as stated in our inactive accounts policy,” a spokesperson said. “We have begun proactive outreach to many accounts who have not logged into Twitter in over six months to inform them that their accounts may be permanently removed due to prolonged inactivity.” If you’ve set up a bot or another secondary account, you should be safe as long as it’s stayed active. The BBC’s Dave Lee reported on the username cleanup. Twitter hasn’t yet

said exactly when recouped usernames will be made available to existing users. But don’t get your hopes up too high. Keep in mind that these accounts don’t have to actually tweet anything to stick around. They just have to log in and follow Twitter’s instructions. So even if the username you want seems long dormant based on activity, whoever owns it can still hold on to the username pretty easily. Also, usernames with under five characters are no longer supported by the service, so that’s another thing to consider when dreaming about switching to that username you’ve always wanted.

Are we sitting comfortably? Although comfort is important, when it comes to children in cars it is safety that takes priority. And there are still many people putting children at risk, many of those not realising the dangers they, as responsible adults, are subjecting the children to.

The use of the seat belt is mandatory for all vehicle occupants in Spain. There is also the one seat belt – one seat rule, so, for example, if there are only 2 seat belts in the back then only 2 passengers can be carried. However, the rules are stricter when it comes to protecting children. Using a properly fastened seat belt in a vehicle can save injuries and even deaths in the event of an incident. The same applies to children and child restraint systems (SRI) which, according to the DGT, reduces the risk of death by 75% and injuries by 90%. All children measuring less than 1.35 meters are not permitted to sit in the front seats and must use an SRI suitable for their size and weight. The SRI must also be properly secured to the approved retention system in the car. You should check with your vehicle handbook for this, as well as the seat itself as they do differ. The only exceptions where children are allowed in the front are if the vehicle doesn´t have

rear seats, such as a sports car, and if the seats are already occupied by other children under the same criteria. Each child must have an appropriate SRI for their height and weight. Not carrying the appropriate retention system can result in a fine of 200 euro and the withdrawal of 3 points from licence of the driver, who is deemed responsible for children in the car. You can also find that your vehicle is immobilised at the roadside and you are unable to continue your journey if the officers who stop you feel the need to protect the children from risk.

Driving a vehicle without an ITV In the latest campaign looking at commercial vehicles on the road, some 20% were travelling without a valid ITV. The ITV test is a mandatory inspection of a vehicle once it reaches a certain age (which can vary). In one of the most recent changes to the law you can take your vehicle for the test up to a month before the expiry date and the time is added to the end. So, for example, if your current certificate expires on 30 November but you take your vehicle on the 10th, assuming it passes, the next expiration will still be the 30th, again depending on the length of validity. However, once the ITV has expired, you are not permitted to drive the vehicle on the road. Unlike the UK, that includes the trip to the ITV testing station. The only option is transporting the vehicle on the back of a grua, a tow truck, to the test centre. Driving a car with the expired ITV

means that the vehicle is no longer certified to have met the minimum safety requirement to be on the road. If you do drive with an expired ITV then you face a fine of 200 euro and your vehicle may be impounded, which will be a more expensive recovery operation for you to retrieve it and then take it to the test centre. There are also two common myths we will clear up whilst talking about the ITV. Firstly, you are free to take your vehicle to any test centre in the national territory, irrespective of where you live. Some people believe that if you live in the Alicante province, for example, you are not permitted to drive to Murcia to have the test carried out. This is a myth. The law states that you are free to take your vehicle to any test centre. The test itself may differ, but any differences are additional to the mandatory level and so your vehicle will be covered so long as it

passes. The second common myth is that you are permitted to take a foreign registered vehicle, such as one with UK number plates, and have the test conducted here in Spain. You are permitted to take any vehicle to a test centre, and they will perform the test, but the certificate states “voluntary test”. The inspectors will check any vehicle for safety, but the test will not be valid on foreign vehicles. The mandatory vehicle test must be done in the country where the vehicle is registered, so in the case of a British car it must have the MOT test carried out back in the UK.

How to avoid a Traffic Fine Okay, the headline is a bit misleading, we are not going to give you any special way of getting out of trouble. Put simply, don´t want the fine, don´t do the crime, but we thought we would give you some of the most common infractions so that you know how to avoid being fined, or worse, as traffic laws are designed with one aim, to make the roads safer. Having an expired driving licence is a serious offence. Driving without a licence, which this would constitute, now falls into criminal law, and so it is possible you will be arrested. The best-

case scenario is a 200 euro fine, so check the dates on your licence and make sure it is renewed before it expires. If you were spectacles the law was changed not too long ago removing the need to carry a spare pair. However, it is advisable as your licence codes indicate if you should be wearing glasses and if you drive without them you face a 200 euro fine. We are stating the obvious when we say that your vision will also be impaired which could lead to devastating consequences. In the event of a breakdown or

incident you must put your reflective vest on to protect yourself at the scene. It is a mandatory piece of equipment to carry and not wearing it when needed carries a 200 euro fine. The fine is also the same if you are not carrying the two mandatory warning triangles. Novice drivers who choose not to display the green “L” plate in a visible location also face their possible first fine of 80 euro. Novice drivers are subjected to more restrictions than those who have been driving for a while and this device is intended to advise other drivers of the fact.

TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT ■ CHRIS DARWEN

matches playing badly - Liverpool are certainly maxing out on that at the moment.

chris@costablancapeople.com

OK, something’s not quite right. Is there a weird parallel universe in action, or something? We seem to have been thrust into an existence where England are the bookie favourites for Euro 2020 having been given a hilariously easy draw, Liverpool are 11 points clear at the top of the Premier League, West Ham are winning matches at Chelsea and Miguel Almiron has an assist to his name. As I said, something isn’t right. Up at Anfield, Liverpool answered the question around whether they’d continue their unbeaten run now Fabinho is out until 2020 (which sounds a hell of a lot longer than it actually is). However, they did it in a way that maintains the classic cliche around titlewinning teams know how to win

Virgil van Dijk probably didn’t realise the votes for the Ballon D’Or are all done and dusted, so his headed double is too late to influence that outcome. But, they did help Liverpool break down an impressive Brighton and get a 2-0 lead that was muchneeded by the end. Allison, so complimentary of Adrian in a pre-match Sky interview, clearly felt the need to let his teammate have some more limelight given his dash from goal to palm the ball away when a good five yards out of his area.

City without Aymeric Laporte have struggled. City without Laporte and Sergio Aguero do not feel like the team that have won back-to-back titles, even if Guardiola did claim post-match his side played as well as they did when winning those titles. As for Leicester, it’s always a good sign when a team comes back from a goal down to win with an injury-time winner, no? I mean, isn’t that what Liverpool have been doing for much of the season? And, if you add in a winner from a striker who never, ever scores then you know you are having a good season. Iheanacho’s late, later strike perfectly complimented Jamie Vardy’s 13th Premier League strike of the season and put Marco Silva even closer to the exit door at Goodison Park. I hear there might be a job going at Vicarage Road though, so it’s not all bad for Silva. Do you remember ‘old Jose’ - the guy who used to park the bus at every available opportunity? Those days seem long gone, as his three matches in the Spurs dugout have seen ten goals for and six goals

Moments later, Adrian had conceded the resulting free kick with a mere 15 minutes left on the clock - 15 minutes only for King Kloppo to come up with a convincing reason as to why his sub ‘keeper could concede so quickly. Credit to Klopp, this is why his top-ofthe-table. He’s moved on from the Anfield wind as being an issue. On Saturday, Adrian conceded without touching the ball because he was, wait for it, freezing cold. You see, wearing a short-sleeved shirt and gloves not designed to keep hands warm are a nightmare for number two shotstoppers. Yes, that is the reason Adrian didn’t line his wall up quickly enough and Lewis Dunk cleverly placed the ball home. Maybe he still wasn’t very warm when he nearly threw that other one over the line as well? Adrian will be in goal for the Merseyside Derby which shouldn’t be a problem - Liverpool are playing Everton after all. I’m pretty sure I heard Liverpool fans singing the name of Jonjo Shelvey for the first time ever on Merseyside, as well. The Newcastle skipper found long-awaited popularity on the Kop by curling home a late equaliser at St James’ Park. The goal meant Peppy G’s Man City dropped more points in their title-race, making it understandable that the Catalan is now looking at catching Leicester City before spending any time worrying about catching the European champions. By the end, Benjamin Mendy must have been looking at Jethro Willems and wishing he could be as dangerous going forward. The Newcastle left-back has now scored crackers against both City and Liverpool and he is the reason Miguel Almiron will be able to tell his grandkids he did once get an assist in the Premier League.

against. Fresh from coming back from two goals down against Olympiakos, Tottenham led Bournemouth by three just like they led West Ham by three last weekend. And again, just like against the Hammers, they ended up sneaking a win 3-2. But Jose won’t care, in public anyway. He can use this to create his new image as a carefree, attack-minded gaffer whose sole purpose in life is to bring entertainment to the people. Oh, and get the best out of Dele Alli. Two for two on that score so far, Jose. Personally, I have a lot of time for a 33year-old Premier League debutant being in tears at the end of the match, then climbing up to the press box to give his old man a hug.

are expected to move for the aforementioned Hughton as he is kicking around waiting for his next go on the merry-go-round. Ralph Hasenhuttl is a lucky man, as he has now passed the 14 matches in the season point that did for Mark Hughes last time. As expected, it was a terrible game played out by two terrible teams - but Southampton’s winner did come from a James WardProwse free-kick which was decent. Unai Emery is no more at Arsenal, so that’s that problem solved then, right? Freddie Ljungberg is Arsenal’s Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, brought in to reunite the fans and the team, to play the attacking football that the Arsenal supporters demand, remind the press that he ‘used to play for the club’ 15 times a briefing, call Arsene Wenger 19 times a day and never, ever park in the old boss’ parking space because he will always be the boss. Unfortunately for Freddie, he seems to have missed off the ‘win the first nine games’ bit that Solskjaer did so well. Sure, Arsenal’s 17th skipper of the season netted an equaliser despite there being another ball on the pitch (who cares if a Norwich fan threw it on) but at no point did it look like the beginning of a beautiful honeymoon period for the Swede - had it not been for Bernd Leno, and we’ve never said that before,

modern game - a homegrown cult hero. Alongside Harry Kane, he is out there flying the flag for the local boys and his goal at Old Trafford will only further boost his standing in B6. Marcus Rashford is one who could potentially claim to be a homegrown cult hero in the coming years at United, if he could just become a little bit better and a little bit more consistent. He had a goal cruelly (and rather amusingly) taken away from him after his header hit the post, went across the goalline and tapped Tom Heaton on the back before going in. Obviously, the panel gave it as an oggie - why wouldn’t they? United led 2-1 momentarily, no doubt leaving Solskjaer to reminisce once more over the great teams he played in - the kind of teams that wouldn’t let Villa go and get an equaliser 30 seconds later. Teemu Pukki correctly deduced it is easier to score if you hit it straight at Mustafi than trying to score direct yourself and we got to see the awful Todd Cantwell celebration once more as Norwich led 2-1 at the break - Arsenal’s goal coming from a retaken Yo-Pierre penalty after it looked like Tim Krul had performed dark heroics once again. Uncle Roy has said pre-match that Palace wouldn’t underestimate Burnley,

That’s what happened at Stamford Bridge as Frank Lampard’s Chelsea fell to their second successive Premier League defeat and David Martin left a hero. It wasn’t the most difficult selection Manuel Pellegrini has ever had to made, as if he hadn’t dropped Roberto for this one he’d have probably paid with his job. However, even with a new man in goal and even with him being the son of a West Ham legend, not many will have expected the Hammers to depart with all three points - probably enough to see Pellegrini still in post come 2020. Lampard was gracious in defeat, admitting his kids must have stayed up late on Friday night given their tiredlooking performance. Chris Hughton will be gutted though, he might have to end up at Watford now instead of the Athletics Stadium. I said in a preview somewhere that the loser of the Southampton vs Watford relegation 12-pointer would be looking for a new job come Cyber Monday. Quique Sanchez Flores managed to lose (from a winning position) and, as a result, leaves Watford for a second time. Watford

Norwich would have won handsomely. Winning nine games (or whatever it actually was) in a row is a distant memory for Ole Gunnar, just like his twinkling blue eyes and boyish enthusiasm for the job. Granted, United matches are finally entertaining again - but predominantly because you just know the opposition will score at least once. Jack Grealish, as well as being the most fouled footballer in the Premier League, is becoming one of those rarities in the

a curious statement given that Burnley were higher in the table than Palace at kick-off. Credit to Hodgson though, they didn’t - Palace’s win ending Burnley’s nice little run of 3-0 wins. Wolves are pretty damn fine at coming from behind and Sheffield United are pretty damn fine at not losing away from home. Therefore, when United took a 10 first-half lead you’d have been a fool not to back a 1-1 draw. It ended 1-1, obviously.

SMGS at Vistabella November 27th, 2019 An early start and glorious day saw 33 members and 5 guests find their way to SMGS’ monthly venue of Vistabella. The course was in excellent condition, with the badly storm damaged bunkers and waste areas seen during our previous visit now pretty much all repaired. The greens in particular were excellent. However, whilst scoring is usually very high at this venue, it was not so much the case today, with Mick Roscoe posting the day’s best points’ total of thirty-eight. Normans Cahill and Padmore and Tony Smale also bettered their handicaps. Interestingly a large number of those who had been in the prizes at Vistabella back in November produced again, including the two Normans, Mike Jordan, Mike Kaylor and Mike Greatorex. Horses for courses, but obviously here being called Norman or Mike helps!! The main reason for lower than normal scoring (although still pretty good) was most likely the often tricky pin positions. The majority of flags were positioned right at the front or back of greens. The thick grass found around many of these also contributed, making chipping difficult from close. Whilst there were many interesting shots played, shot of the day probably went to Alan MacDonald for leaving his ball high and dry on a little island of earth inside the water hazard of the 10th hole. Target golf at its best!! A doubles matchplay one-off game was held between the winner and runner-up of last season’s singles league

MATCH FISHING REPORT ABBEY ANGLING This week’s Open Match was due to be fished on the Embalsa de Pedrera but had to be changed due to work on going and the road being shut off, and possibly with no access in the future to the lake, This is being looked into by the Club and we will advice the outcome. The match was then fished at The El Bosquet Complex Section A on the 26th November.

division one against those of division two. Norman Cahill and Robin Eastman came out on top against Hugh Reilly and Phil de Lacy 3 and 1. The day’s prize winners were the following: Bronze Category: 4th Tommy Boyle (32), 3rd Mike Jordan (36), 2nd Norman Padmore (37) and 1st, with the day’s best score, Mick Roscoe with 38 points Silver Category: 4th Mike Kaylor (31), 3rd Noel Conellan (32), 2nd Scotty Philips (35) and 1st Dave Gibson with 36 points Gold Category: 4th Mike Greatorex (34), 3rd Paul Kelsall (35), 2nd Norman Cahill (37 on CB) and 1st President Tony

The Celts GS Championship day for November was at our home course of La Serena. We had 82 players on the day another fantastic turnout. The weather for this time of the year was quite pleasant but the wind got up later on in the day and made the course that little bit more challenging. These days do not run themselves, there is a team of people who all work together to make the event such a success. The competitions committee under the guidance of Camillus Fitzpatrick and ably assisted by Philip Mountford and Terry Fitzgerald. Thank you and well done. To the golf shop with Karolina, Jose and Paul looking after our every need. To Vanessa, Marijose, Vanessa and Gloria in the bar and restaurant muchos gracias por todo. Well done to all the winners and congratulations to so many who remained behind to honour those who won a prize. Excitement as Elche CF achieve Play Lo Crispin Golf Society at La Finca Off Points and a Historic Record The first issue which Elche faced was the opposition’s away kit; black shirt and green shorts, almost an exact copy of theirs, so confusion had to be avoided. However the ‘Daz’ brilliance of the Franjiverdes white home kit shone through at the Martinez Valero. The visitors exploded onto the field and had the first corner and the first free kick, whilst Elche had the first yellow card! Considering that Racing were 8 places below Elche, there was not much between them. The ball spent most of the opening minutes at the feet of opposition, but during the 5th minute Elche almost managed a goal which was saved by Luca, the son of Zinedine Zidane. The main problem for the home team during the first half was the lack of possession. Fortunes changed in the 21st minute when, following some great passing by Nino #7 and Josan #17, the first goal of the match was scored by Yacine #9. The home team exploded onto the field after half time, but soon found themselves spending more time defending than attacking. A historic moment transpired during the 50th minute when Verdu #5 made a solid tackle, robbing the ball and sending it to

the feet of Nino #7. The 39 year old did not hesitate, and executed a superb goal. With this shot he became equal all time greatest goal scorer for Elche, matching the 130 goals scored by Pierita for the club during the 1950’s. Elche used all 3 substitutions to baluster the team, and Racing continued to pose a danger playing with much effort and passion. The Franjiverdes maintained the 20 scoreline. After 5 games without a loss, Elche CF find themselves in 7th place, on equal points with Zaragoza and just out of the playoffs on head to head Next Sunday sees them in a tricky away encounter against Cadiz, who are 7 points clear at the top of the table. Book now to join the EuroTourGuide Coach Tour for the next home match at the Martinez Valero against Las Palmas on Sunday 15th December. It is 20€ per adult for return travel and match ticket in the Fondo Sur Cubierta, picking up from the Orihuela Costa, Torrevieja Carrefour, Quesada, Rojales and La Marina. https://eurotourguide.com/en/coachtour/Sporting-Events

A good 'turnout' of 39 members made the relatively short journey to La Finca to play in an individual stableford competition. The sun was out, the breeze for the most part was slight, making conditions to play golf 'perfect'. Perhaps the scores did not wholly reflect this, but everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. The consensus was that the course was in a good condition and that the greens were 'fast'. Following the game we returned to the Lo Crispin Tavern, where the prizes were distributed and we were supplied with Tapas by the ever friendly and helpful staff. The winners were as follows : Gold Division 1st. Place - Adrian Aspbury 28 pts. off 9 2nd. Place - Brian Coultate 26 pts. off 16 3rd. Place - Ian Stuart 25 pts. off 11 (on count back) Silver Division 1st. Place - Alan Crain 27 pts. off 23 (on count back) 2nd. Place - Keith Rennison 27 pts. off 25 3rd. Place - Frank Cusack 26 pts. off 28 N.T. P. on Par 3s Hole 3 - Eddy Downing Hole 6 - Dean Astley Hole 13 - Brian Coultate Hole 16 - Brian Coultate Brian Coultate, Ian Stuart and Dean Astley shared the day's 2s. pot. The Free Game Draw was won by Mike Cutts. The penultimate game of the year at Roda on 11th. December, is also our last stableford of the year. Steve Harrington. (Membership and Handicap Secretary)
