Police to increase alcohol and drugs tests this week x

see main ad page 25

See Main Adverts on pages 36 & 37

In a bid to clamp down on drink driving and driving under the influence of drugs, traffic police will be carrying out more than 25,000 checks every day this week in light of the number of Christmas lunches and dinners that people will be celebrating. During this week 10th - 15th December officers from the Guardia Civil will be setting up check points on different types of roads and at all different times of the day and night in order to limit the number of intoxicated drivers on the roads. In order to increase road safety this Christmas in the nation's towns too, the DGT has invited the local councils of all towns with more than 25,000 inhabitants to join the campaign by setting up checks in their towns. Last year 346 town councils took part, carrying out a total of more than 50,000

drugs and alcohol tests. Driving under the influence of either drugs or alcohol causes a third of all fatal road traffic accidents on Spanish roads. In fact, 19 percent of road traffic deaths last year could be attributed to illegal drug consumption, and 66 percent of drivers killed on the roads were found to have three or more times the legal limit

of alcohol in their blood. The Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) stresses that the consumption of alcohol not only increases the probability of having an accident, but also implies a greater risk of that accident being either fatal or causing severe injuries.

study

“Losing kilos, gaining well-being” is the name of the first research project being developed by the University of Alicante (UA) with the health department of the General Hospital of Alicante to get over 65s or overweight or obese people to lose weight thanks to a personalised diet, physical exercise and psychological intervention. It is the first time that such a project has been carried out in the province of Alicante, focused on the elderly losing weight from a multidisciplinary intervention. At the moment the study is underway with 60 patients, 30 who participate actively and another 30 as a control group to be able to later compare results and demonstrate their effectiveness. The principal investigator of this research project is the Professor of Clinical Nutrition of the UA Ana Zaragoza. The study began last September with 60 patients selected by the Health Department. The thirty active participants attended an individual session with a nutritionist who made a personalised diet for each of the subjects. They have been recommended to walk at least half an hour a day and exercise programmes to improve flexibility, strength and muscle tone need to be followed. The psychologist offers relaxation techniques and guides them on the management of emotions.

The participants in the study have menus with breakfast, lunch, snack and dinner with variations so that they always know what foods are necessary and how to combine them. Also a series of general recommendations such as: drinking at least a litre and a half of water a day; try to eat at home, sitting at the table and with company if possible; eat fibre, fruits and vegetables every day; limit fried and fatty food; try to establish meal schedules and keep them; eat slowly and chew food well; consume extra virgin olive oil and exercise regularly. The results are very positive in a month and a half, the group of 30 people has lost 1.2 kilos on average each so over the group, 38 kilos has been lost. If the project is a success and there is an improvement both in weight loss and in the general state of the participants health, the idea is to extend the experience to all health centres across the province, so that professionals can recommend the programme to their patients and if they want to they can join in to improve their health and well-being. "The objective is to be able to replicate the results of this research, developing a protocol that can be extended to all health centres," says Adela Alonso, deputy of the Directorate of Primary Care Nursing in the health department Alicante-General Hospital.

BITE SIZE Carols in the Square Christmas Jumper Day NEWS: and Carols in the Plaza Continued from page 3

A cracking Christmas Fair The Age Concern band of valiant volunteers excelled themselves at this year’s fair manning even more stands selling clothes, jewellery, CDs, knitted items, the Christmas table, mobility equipment, cakes, bric-a-brac, and so much more. There was the grand raffle, knock the tins, tombola, guess big Teddy’s name. While relaxing in the sunshine, everyone was royally entertained by local Vocal Choir ‘The Lyricals’. The aim of this annual event is to raise money enabling Age Concern to keep all their services, vehicles and equipment in tip top condition so that the vulnerable elderly in the area can live their lives in good health, peace and tranquillity. The enormous amount raised on this day was €2647.04. For all information on the services, activities and events Age Concern offer and produce go to the website www.ageconcerncostablancasur.org or on Facebook, Age Concern Costa Blanca Sur.

Art Expo During the month of December the Quesada Art Group will be exhibiting a selection of their recent paintings and drawings in the Quesada Cultural Centre. It starts on the 10th and will finish at the end of the month. The group has been together for many years and meet every Wednesday morning in the Cultural Centre library. There will be acrylic paintings, watercolours, and drawings showing a wide range of styles and subject matter. New members are always welcome if you want to come along and give it a try. There are many nationalities within the group.

Still time for Panto fun There’s going to be some swashbuckling audience participation – OH YES THERE IS, along with silly slapstick comedy with the panto Dame, as well as lots of yo ho ho type songs for everyone to join in with. The very talented dancing group, The Crazy Ladies will be joining the Rojales Pantomime Group for this amazing pantomime Treasure Island at the Cardenal Belluga Theatre on the evenings of January 30th, 31st and February 1st at 7.30pm. The Rojales Pantomime Group raised around 3000€ from their last pantomime, which was donated to various local charities and they are hoping to raise even more from this next hilarious production. Tickets are 8€ adults, 5€ children and can be purchased fromCard Place, Benimar; Post Room Benijofar; Post Box Dona Pepa; Redz, Quesada; Chimes Bar, Los Montesinos; Bargain Books, San Miguel; Serenity Insurance, Entre Naranjos; The Christmas Shop, La Siesta. If you would like to reserve tickets please contact Christine on 678 212 034 or email shimserv@gmail.com.

Local musicians are gearing up for a number of festive music events over the weekend with an array of carol concerts and Christmas music planned at venues up and down the coast. Two of the main events both take place this Friday – the traditional Carols in the Square which takes place in front of the church in Torrevieja centre and a new event in Villamartin Plaza which will follow a similar format to the traditional carol concert. In Torrevieja, RBL Band will be joined by a number of local Spanish musicians and under the directorship of David Last will perform a series of traditional Christmas carols in English and Spanish. The event starts at 5pm and offers a great chance to check out the nativity scene at the same time. In Villamartin Plaza, the Phoenix International Concert Band will host the carol service, also on Friday 13th December (at 4pm) in aid of Christmas

Jumper Day which will raise funds for Help Vega Baja’s flood appeal. Monies gathered on the day will go towards helping those who are still reeling from the recent floods this Christmas. Attendees are encouraged to wear a Christmas jumper or anything festive and donate €2 to the appeal. The songsheets for both of the events are the same and are printed in this week’s Costa Blanca People so don’t forget to bring along your copy and join in the festive fun.

Last call for Christmas Jumper Day! The Costa Blanca People and Kosta Kitchens are encouraging everyone to join in the fun – and all you need to do is get your Christmas Jumper on! The campaign is not only for people in the workplace – if you have a group of friends, a club or a charity, you are also most welcome to take part! If you don’t have a Christmas Jumper already, don’t worry! You can decorate an ordinary jumper, or borrow one from a friend. What’s important is that together, we have the chance to raise money for families in need this

Christmas! We suggest a minimum donation of €2 per person but obviously, the more you can give the more it will help. Decide how much you want to ask colleagues and clients to donate. Send us your photos for inclusion in next week’s paper. Donations can be brought to the Costa Blanca People (Torrevieja) Kosta Kitchens (Torrevieja) Help Vega Baja (San Miguel) Vincent Real Estate (Benijófar) or Leddy Homes (Los Montesinos). Or, call us on 966 70 10 60 for more details on how to donate by bank transfer.

Three arrested for mobile phone thefts

Temporary home needed for Labrador puppies

Guardia Civil have arrested three individuals for the theft of several mobile phones in Orihuela and Albatera. Officers made the three arrests and instigated charges for an alleged 20 thefts and a further charge of belonging to a criminal organisation. Following the investigation, officers have managed to recover 18 latest generation mobile phones, valued at more than 9,000 euros, which have already been returned to their rightful owners. The investigation began in mid November when officers in Crevillente received a police report, filed by a worker of a shop in the town who claimed that his phone had been stolen. A series of enquiries based on specific information provided in the report led officers to quickly focus their search on specific people. Following the trail of the suspects, investigations discovered that there seemed to be numerous crimes, of the

same modus operandi, committed by these three same people in a number of towns including Albatera, Elche, Crevillente, Santa Pola, Orihuela and more. The suspects entered various businesses asking for alms or some kind of help, distracting the worker or any person who was inside the establishment, in order to steal their mobile phones. In the end, the suspects were spotted driving around Crevillente in a high end vehicle by members of the public who then alerted Guardia Civil before arrests were made. When officers stopped the car to question the suspects, they found a hidden compartment in which the gang kept the stolen mobile phones. The two occupants of the car, both Romanian nationals, were arrested and charged with 20 counts of theft. The owner of the car, also a Romanian citizen, was summoned to make a statement and later, the three were charged with belonging to a criminal organisation.

Can you give a temporary home to two adorable, playful Labrador puppies? Animal charity APAH is looking to find a happy home for sisters Aurora and Auralia, just until its new kennels are built. APAH has been having on-going problems in a dispute with a bank over ownership and accepting of responsibility for maintenance of the finca where it has its dog rescue kennels. The result of the dispute is that the charity is now in the middle of moving all its rescue dogs from the site and settling them in foster homes and boarding kennels, or wherever else it can find, whilst APAH searches for a new location to rebuild its kennels. However, APAH is struggling to find someone who can home the two Labrador sisters. Aurora and Auralia are 8 months old and although it would be ideal for them to be homed together, APAH is willing to separate them if it means they can be homed. Aurora and Auralia are typical Labrador puppies, they are lively, friendly, sociable girls who want to be friends with everyone. They would fit perfectly into a family environment or be great company for a single person or couple. APAH needs to get these puppies settled urgently as time is running out before they have to have all their dogs relocated. If you can help by given one or both of these girls a temporary home please call 616 210 850 or email: apahrescue@hotmail.co.uk

Couple commits suicide after cancer diagnosis A Canadian couple resident in Córdoba have been found dead in what is believed to have been a double suicide. Their deaths are believed to have followed the man’s recent diagnosis with terminal cancer. The bodies were found inside a vehicle on their own land in Puente Genil, Córdoba. It is believed they had been dead for approximately 12 hours before they were discovered. A note was left

with the bodies. Locals also reported that the couple, in their 70s, had spent the last few days saying goodbye to their friends in the town, claiming that they were going travelling. The couple had lived in Puente Genil for over twenty years and were well known and liked in the town. The bodies were discovered when a neighbour raised the alarm. He had seen the man in his vehicle but when he did not react to calls, became concerned.

Brit woman saved in Spain after heart stops for 6 hours

A British woman has made a full recovery after collapsing on a Spanish mountainside and suffering a six-hour cardiac arrest caused by severe hypothermia - a condition that doctors say also saved her life. Audrey Mash arrived at Barcelona’s Vall d’Hebron hospital after a dramatic mountain-peak helicopter rescue in appalling weather conditions in the Pyrenees with a body temperature of just 20ºC. Thanks to the quick thinking of rescue workers and doctors’ use of a state-of-the-

art ECMO machine that warmed and oxygenated her blood externally, Ms Mash’s heart was sparked back to life with electric defibrillators almost seven hours after she had stopped breathing. Eleven days later she was discharged, with no ill effects beyond a slight lack of feeling in her fingers. Audrey and her husband, Rohan Schoeman, were celebrating their sixth wedding anniversary with a weekend in the Pyrenees near the French border. That day the couple set out from the hiking lodge earlier than the two friends who were spending the weekend with them. The weather took an unexpected turn and it began to snow, but they pushed on to the 2,563-metre peak of Torreneules. Mr Schoeman said that when they reached the top, they were hit by a whiteout. They sheltered from the storm behind a rock for a couple of hours, but when the blizzard continued they started to crawl in what they hoped was the right direction. Mr Schoeman said Audrey began to behave strangely, speaking nonsense before she fell unconscious. “Her eyes rolled and she sighed what seemed to be her last. I looked for her pulse and to see if she was breathing, but there were no signs of life. I thought she was dead. That was about 3pm.”

Alerted by the couple’s two friends, helicopter search teams were scouring the mountains. At 6pm Ms Mash arrived at the hospital and in 20 minutes was being hooked up to an ECMO machine. When her body reached 30ºC, the medical team successfully jumpstarted her heart at 9.46pm. “The hypothermia saved Audrey’s life functions. Because her brain was cold, there is no damage,” Jordi Riera, the director of the ECMO team at Vall D’Hebron When I arrived at hospital my chances of survival were not good,” Ms Mash said, adding that around 40 people were involved in her rescue and treatment. “The amazing thing is the work the doctors and also the firefighters and the medical team that brought me to the hospital did. I am lucky they all realised there was something they could do and not give up on me,” said the 34-year-old English teacher who lives in Barcelona. “I am ok. I can go back to work, go back to my life. I am not a religious person but it’s like a miracle.” Dr Eduard Argudo, an intensive care specialist who treated Ms Mash at Vall d’Hebron said: “It’s an exceptional case in the world; the longest cardiac arrest on record in Spain.”

New Guidelines for Scooters and Mobility Vehicles Prior to the final approval of the law which will ensure safer movements of personal mobility vehicles (Vehículos de Movilidad Personal or VMP), the director general of traffic (DGT) has issued new guidelines for how these new modes of transport should be incorporated into daily life. This week, we spoke to Mark Nolan of the N332 group who, below, takes us through the current DGT guidelines. The objective of the guidelines are to establish clarifying criteria for users, city councils and law enforcement officers until the formal regulation is published. The guidelines and subsequent law have come about due to the increase in personal mobility vehicles that are proliferating in urban areas, where these vehicles have become an alternative means of displacement for citizens. The formal regulation of personal mobility vehicles is currently in the processing phase, but this does not prevent an instruction, such as the one published, from detailing the criteria to which these vehicles are subjected to within the current traffic regulations. “The DGT has published the guidelines at the request of traffic police given the increase in situations that are occurring in many towns and cities that have a negative impact on road safety, especially when it affects vulnerable groups” said Javier Villalba, deputy director of regulations at the DGT. The instruction advances the definition envisaged for VMP in the pending modification of the Reglamento General de Vehículos (RGC) with the objective of contributing to the transparency and competition of the affected operators, starting with the current and future users themselves. According to the instruction a VMP is a vehicle with one or more wheels equipped with a single seat and propelled exclusively by electric motors that can provide the vehicle with a maximum design speed of between 6 and 25 kilometres per hour. Therefore, the following are not classed as VMP: Vehicles without selfbalancing system and with saddle Vehicles designed for competition Vehicles for people with reduced mobility Vehicles included in the scope of EU Regulation N2 168/2013: scooters with a seat, motorcycles, two-wheel mopeds…. Remember that

these vehicles require administrative authorisation to drive (ITV and vehicle registration, and driving licence), and require an insurance policy, in addition to the use of the helmet. As a general rule, gadgets that do not exceed the speed of 6 kilometres per hour are considered toys. Those that can exceed 25 kilometres per hour are considered vehicles (mopeds). VMPs do not require administrative authorisation to drive, or mandatory insurance. Therefore, points will not be deducted from the driver when it is clear that the type of vehicle is a VMP. SANCTIONABLE BEHAVIOURS For the knowledge of both users and traffic police, the instruction also includes those improper behaviours that are subject to sanctions and fines as they are considered unsafe practices: Users of VMPs are obliged to undergo alcohol and drug tests, being sanctioned, with the same economic amount and consequences as if they were driving another vehicle, in case of exceeding alcohol rates (500 or 1,000 euro depending on the excess rate) or in case of presence of drugs (1,000 euro). In the case of refusing to submit to such tests, in principle and unless the competent Prosecutor's Office of the province can establish other criteria for a possible charge for a criminal offence typified in article 379.2 of the Criminal Code - which will always be of preferential application - they will be reported as an administrative infraction. If the driver is positive for alcohol or drugs, the VMP is immobilised, as is the case with other vehicles. As they are vehicle drivers, users are prohibited from using a mobile phone or any other manual communication system whilst driving. The penalty would be 200 euro (Article 12.2.5B of the RGC). Users are prohibited from driving using headphones or headphones connected to receiving devices or sound players. If they are detected, they will be denounced by this precept with a 200 euro fine (Article 12.2.5A of the RGC). Helmet and other protection elements. In the absence of a regulation in the RGC, the use of these elements will be governed by the provisions of the corresponding Municipal Ordinance. In the event that the ordinance regulates the mandatory use of a helmet, the

sanction will be 200 euro (art 118.1 of the RGC) and will proceed with the immobilisation of the vehicle in accordance with article 104.1.c) of the consolidated text of the road safety law. VMP are banned from driving on pavements and pedestrian areas, since Article 121 of the RGC prohibits the movement of any vehicle on pavements (except skateboards, skates or similar devices) being punishable with a 200 fine, with the qualifications that the Municipal Ordinances can establish. VMP and other electrically powered light vehicles are only authorised to transport one person, so the movement of two or more people on a VMP is punishable by a 100 fine (Article 9.1.5.E of the RGC). Driving at night or in poor visibility without lighting or high visibility garments with reflective elements is considered negligent and therefore punishable, since in these cases the driver does not show the necessary diligence to be seen by the other road users or the necessary precaution to avoid danger. The corresponding penalty is 200 euro (article 3.1 of the RGC). The municipal ordinances are those that establish the prohibitions regarding the stopping and parking of these vehicles. As far as the DGT is concerned, pavements are for pedestrians, but the regulation is exclusively municipal. In the case of the infractions being committed by persons under 18 years of age, the parents or guardians will be jointly and severally liable for the infraction committed by the minor. COMMERCIALISED VEHICLES Due to the electronic commerce and the possibility of acquiring vehicles that are sold as VMP but which are not, the DGT warns of the importance of looking at the technical characteristics of the device, paying special attention to speed, which cannot exceed 25 kilometres per hour, and the power. In addition, if they are put into circulation, devices that apparently offer benefits greater than a VMP and do not meet the requirements of EU Regulation No 168/2013, cannot circulate on the roads subject to regulation and their drivers will be denounced with a penalty of 500 euro and will be immobilised and deposited thereof. This same group includes cases of VMP that have been manipulated to alter the speed or technical characteristics. Mark Nolan

Lucky couple wins €3000 courtesy of Inmobiliaria Quesada’s number one estate agency Inmobiliaria has been celebrating its 30th Anniversary and to mark the occasion the company invited customers and members of the local community to join staff for a get-together at its office, near to Quesada arch. This was no ordinary celebration as Inmobiliaria were giving away €3,000 in cash to one lucky winner! The anniversary celebration began with business owner Lyn Dallow telling how, after being in the property industry for many years, she and husband Tony left the UK with two small children to establish Quesada’s first estate agency. Over the years, they have seen a huge amount of change, both in the town, surrounding areas and in the property market but always strive to remain at the forefront of the industry. Inmobiliaria is truly a family business as daughter Rebecca is now a driving force of the business and her daughter Courtney is also a valued member of the team. The business also

includes Stacey and Catriona and between them the team knows everything that customers need to know about the local property market and buying and selling houses in Spain. The prize draw tickets were held in a locked box and had the

names of customers who have bought or sold houses with Inmobiliaria. The draw was made by local lawyer Pablo Fernandez Marcos and the winning ticket was in the names of Deborah & Carl Hayes-Angel, who recently bought a house. Deborah was speechless when Rebecca told her she was the lucky winner of the prize draw.

Having not long recovered from breast cancer, Deborah explained that she will be donating half of the money to breast cancer research. The team at Inmobiliaria were delighted that someone so deserving had won the money and that part of it will be used to support such a worthwhile cause. Lyn and Rebecca said: "What a milestone we have reached! We have seen a lot of people and businesses come and go during the last 30 years, but we are here to stay and will remain the leaders in the local real estate market. Here’s to the next 30!” Properties needed In fact, the business has had such a successful year, selling a bumper amount of properties that it now has more buyers than properties and is in need of properties to sell. A 61-year-old man has suffered burns to one leg and smoke poisoning as a result of a fire at his home on Calle Nicolás de Bussy in Orihuela Costa on Wednesday. The fire, which started at around 9.30am and was extinguished one hour later, has affected several rooms in the house and the flames could be seen coming out of one of the windows of the house. Firefighters from the Vega Sur Torrevieja fire station were called to the scene, with two fire trucks and a support vehicle, and in addition to extinguishing the blaze fire fighters removed several bottles from the property to minimise the risk of explosion. In addition, Civil Guard officers sealed the house, and the Local Police closed the road which is next to Los Dolses School whilst the blaze was being tackled. A SAMU ambulance was also called to the scene and its medical team treated the homeowner for his burns and smoke inhalation. Once the ambulance crew had provided initial care at the scene it was decided to transfer him to Torrevieja Hospital, where he could receive further treatment.

Seagate Wealth Management

Are You An Orphan? I

f you are currently paying a financial adviser to manage your investments, but never sit down in front of your adviser to review your portfolio, then you are what we would call an orphan client. However good the funds looked when your money was invested, if the markets are not monitored and your funds assessed, then there is a danger that your money is not being managed to ensure the best possible returns. If your current adviser does not offer this service, then you might wonder why you are paying an annual management fee. Many people had endowment mortgages in the eighties and nineties and were told that at the end of their mortgage, there would be enough money left over for that dream car or holiday. Unfortunately, as the funds were not monitored, most people found they had a shortfall and needed to switch to a repayment mortgage. The above is simply an example of how important reviews of your investments are to ensure your goals can be realised. Seagate Wealth advisers all previously worked for Lloyds Bank and are used to providing their clients with the highest level of service. All our clients enjoy six monthly reviews where they can sit down with their adviser, review their investments and make adjustments where necessary if their goals have changed. This is also a good time to hear about new products and ask any financial questions. By getting to know each client individually, your Seagate adviser can fully understand your situation and this allows us to provide the best financial advice, not just for today, but forever. For a free noobligation review of your investments with a Qualified adviser, call 965 704 338 or email: Contact@Seagatewealth.es

Christmas decoration trends Deck the halls in style! We have been on the hunt for emerging trends and have identified the top Christmas decorating trends for 2019. Everyone’s favourite seasonal tradition is digging out the boxes and decorating the house with trees, garlands, and twinkling lights as classic Christmas hits play in the background. For the most part, people tend hang same holiday decor every year because it’s easy and practical. But incorporating new holiday decorating trends doesn’t mean you have to do a complete overhaul of your existing decor. Plaid Patterns Plaid has always been one of our go-to holiday patterns, but we’re already seeing the trend explode this year. There has been a 51 percent increase in searches for plaid decor, compared to this time last year. Plaid has long been a Christmas classic, but with the continued popularity of farmhouse style, it's more in fashion than ever. For a modern twist, try a larger pattern, like buffalo check, instead of traditional tartan. Floral Trees We first noticed the emergence of the floral tree trend last year, and it’s only

grown in the months leading up to this Christmas. Searches for sunflower Christmas trees are up 66 percent this year, according to Pinterest’s 2019 holiday report, and we’re also seeing a number of unicorn Christmas trees decorated in pink, white, and gold faux flowers. Instead of a traditional garland, try weaving colourful faux flowers into the branches of a classic evergreen. Finish decorating with your favourite family ornaments. The result is a vibrant tree that showcases your existing decor in a fresh way.

of colour in homes as many are fatigued with the all-white or allgray look, and this hunger for color also translates to the holidays. Boho Christmas decor incorporates handmade accents in splashy shades for a personalised look. You don't have to rehaul your entire holiday decorating collection to incorporate new trends. Add in small things like DIY tassel stockings or ornaments that can be easily swapped out if you want to return to your traditional decor themes next year.

Recycled Materials This season we’re embracing going green: We’re wrapping gifts with fabric instead of paper and purchasing eco-friendly decor items whenever we’re able. An easy way to stay ontrend and support the environment is to opt for decor items made from recycled materials. Cork and cardboard ornaments are a modern and textural way to incorporate humble or recycled materials for a more organic feel.

Nostalgic Decor We've seen a big resurgence of vintage decor in the last few months. Searches for vintage ceramic Christmas trees have risen 24 percent in the last three months alone, which means we aren't the only ones scouring Grandma's attic for vintage holiday decorations. Ceramic trees, ceramic Christmas villages, snow globes, and nutcrackers have been popping up in every retail location over the last couple of years, but also in homes in our magazines and in friends and family’s homes. Even if you can’t be with your loved ones during the holidays, you can still feel a sense of connection when you decorate with these classic Christmas items.

Boho Decor According to Pinterest’s 2019 holiday report, pins related to boho Christmas decorating are up 65 percent from this time last year. We're seeing a resurgence

Pandas in Spain Paleontologists studying fossils in Las Casiones (Teruel) have discovered the presence of the species Indarctos, a relative of the giant panda found in China today. A study published back in 2012 concluded that the last European pandas lived in the Iberian Peninsula. They uncovered proof of the existence of relatives of the giant panda in what is currently Spain dating back between 11 and 12 million years in various fossil remains excavated from sites Abocador de Can Mata in Els Hostalets de Pierola (Barcelona) and Nombrevilla-2 in Daroca (Zaragoza). These were the oldest fossils of their kind in Europe belonging to a species which is currently only found in Asia. The most emblematic of them all, China's giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) a species that would have evolved from a more basal bear, like the ones found fossilised in the Spanish sites. Now, a new study led by palaeontologist Juan Abella at the Catalan Institute of Paleontology (ICP) together with the National Museum of Natural Sciences (MNCN-CSIC), the universities of Cape Town and Valencia and the

Palaeontology Foundation Teruel-Dinรณpolis, has described postcranial remains and teeth belonging to Indarctos punjabiensis in Las Casiones (Teruel) which are calculated to be 6.23 million years old. The discovery, published on December 2nd in "Geodiversitas" magazine suggests that the last European panda really did appear to live in the Iberian Peninsula. "Based on cranial, mandibular

and dental characteristics, these fossils can be classified in the Ailuropodinae subfamily, thus making them relatives of today's giant panda", said Abella. According to genetic methods, the ailuropodinae separated from other subfamilies of current bear species during the Late Miocene, about 20 million years ago. "These were the predominant

bears in the carnivoran assemblages for most of the Late Miocene in the Iberian Peninsula," he explained, adding that at least three different species of bear lived at that time in the region that is now Spain. "These fossils of Indarctos punjabiensis represent the last population of this subfamily from the Iberian fossil record, and possibly also from Europe, making this an important advance in our knowledge of the evolutionary history of this group". According to the paleontologist, the skeleton of Indarctos suggests it was omnivorous, but with a large vegetable component in its diet. Its young could climb trees with relative ease to escape from danger and the more mature bears were able to fend off almost any attack due to their large size and their powerful claws. According to the scientists, six million years ago Las Casiones (9km north of Teruel) was an area with many lakes and diverse fauna including other large mammals like hippopotamus, rhinoceros and Proboscidea, close relatives of today's elephants, as well as hyenas and other carnivores that are now extinct.

Welcome to Saint

Saint Martin is an island in the northeast Caribbean Sea, approximately 300 km east of Puerto Rico. Saint Martin has a land area of 87 km2, 53 km2 of which is under the sovereignty of France, and 34 km2 under the sovereignty of the Kingdom of the Netherlands The main cities are Philipsburg (Dutch side) and Marigot (French side). The Dutch side is more heavily populated. The largest settlement on the entire island is Lower Prince's Quarter, on the Dutch side. History: In 1493, explorer Columbus Christopher embarked on his second voyage to the New World on behalf of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella I of Spain. According to legend, Columbus sighted and perhaps anchored at the island of Saint Martin on November 11,

1493, the feast day of Saint Martin of Tours. At Columbus' time, St. Martin was populated, if at all, by Carib amerindians. The former Arawaks had been chased by the Caribs coming from the north coast of South America a short time before the arrival of the Spaniards who followed in Columbus' wake On 23 March 1648, the Kingdom of France and the Dutch Republic agreed to divide the island between their two territories, with the signing of the Treaty of Concordia. Folklore surrounds the history of the once ever-changing border division between St. Martin and Sint Maarten, and a popular story among locals narrates that "to divide the island into two sections Climate: The island has a tropical monsoon climate with a

Martin dry season from January to April and a rainy season from August to December. The precipitation patterns are due to the movement of the Azores high during the year. Economy: The main industry of the island is tourism. In 2000, the island had about one million visitors annually. About 85% of the workforce was engaged in the tourist industry. Culture and tourism: St. Martin's Dutch side is known for its festive nightlife, beaches, jewellery, drinks made with native rum-based guavaberry liquors, and casinos. The island's French side is known for its nude beaches, clothes, shopping (including outdoor markets), and French and Indian Caribbean cuisine. English is the most commonly spoken language along with a local dialect. Shopping: Shopping on St Maarten and Saint Martin offers duty-free goods in numerous boutiques. Popular goods include local crafts & arts, exotic foods, jewelry, liquor, tobacco, leather goods, as well as most designer goods.

She's just a little girl I have been with my partner for five years, and last Christmas we married and moved in together. I am very happy however he has been married before and has a little girl. My parents weren’t happy about our relationship, and have never acknowledged my step-daughter. This year we want to invite them over for Christmas and would like my husband’s little girl will be present. My sister will be there with her two children and we will be giving presents. I asked my mum if she was intending to buy anything for my husband’s daughter and she said no, as the child is not her granddaughter. I don’t want there to be any bad feeling when presents are given out. My stepdaughter is only 4 and she will be upset if she sees the others getting presents. Talking to my mother about this again won’t solve the problem because she’s adamant. She totally ignored her at the wedding. She barely speaks to my husband. Oh dear. It’s a pity your mother feels the way she does, as there is an innocent child at the centre of things here. If this were me I would probably not subject the little girl to any hostility, so probably wouldn’t have them come into contact. When I was young my own family had a problem with certain members not getting along, and so on holiday occasions we had different family members over at different times, and that was the only way we could have a harmonious Christmas. If your sister and her children get along with your husband’s little girl, then I would make a special day of that, and have your parents and sister over separately.

Full steam ahead for Valencia's pedestrianisation project The city of Valencia is currently undergoing a major transformation, with the redevelopment and pedestrianisation of many of its squares moving along at great speed. Ten squares have already been pedestrianised, two are currently in the process of becoming pedestrian only and another five projects are in the pipeline. The architects of the ambitious city pedestrianisation project hope the project will tackle climate change from two angles: reducing emissions in the city by limiting traffic to certain areas, and creating a greener environment with more trees and more areas for people to socialise in. The long-term plan is to "re-naturalise" the city and re-direct the city's growth towards a more sustainable model. Deputy Mayor and Councillor for Urban Development, Sandra Gómez, says the way forward is to tackle climate change from within our cities. "The main aim of the project has been to study the city, neighbourhood by neighbourhood, reclaiming vital

areas so as to improve people's quality of life and support sustainable development", she explained. Valencia's urban planning, she said, is now geared towards "reclaiming the city's squares as places for people to build a stable and sustainable sense of community". Valencia's squares need to become places where neighbours can "grow, share,

play, have fun and live together" she said, adding that before the pedestrianisation project was launched, these squares "were just congested concrete parking lots with barely passable pavements". Plaza de Rojas Clemente in the Botànic neighbourhood was one of the first to be pedestrianised. It now has trees, seating areas, a children's play area, and bicycle parking to promote the use of pedal power.

The Cabanyal area was one that the city council deemed in need of "urgent intervention" so Plaza Rosario and Plaza Lorenzo La Flor have already been redeveloped. One of the latest redevelopments was carried out in the Plaza de San Sebastián (Botànic), and work has also been done in Plaza San Jerónimo (Rascanya), Plaza Río Segura (Forn d’Alcedo), Plaza San Felipe Neri (Algirós) and Plaza Arzobispo Olaechea (San Marcelino). Plans are also in the pipeline to pedestrianise the Plaza Grup Marqués de Vallterra in El Perellonet and the Plaza Ceramista Gimeno in Malilla, where the Rafael Mateu Cámara school is located. Still to be approved are the more ambitious projects for some of the city centre's most emblematic areas like the pedestrianisation of the Plaza de San Agustín and the redevelopment of the Ciudad de Brujas and the area around the Lonja (Silk Exchange) and the Central Market, not forgetting plans to redevelop the Plaza de la Reina and the Plaza del Ayuntamiento.

NOT ALL ESTATE AGENTS ARE ALIKE Rebecca Serwotka Rebecca Serwotka - Your favourite local property expert, of Inmobiliaria Real Estate Agents in Ciudad Quesada & published author of “Moving Forward - 25 Essential Rules For Buying & Selling Real Estate Without Going Crazy.” Request your FREE copy today!Featured on Best Buy Spain - Property TV.

Please enjoy an excerpt from our book, “Moving Forward - 25 Essential Rules For Buying and Selling Real Estate Without Going Crazy.” Many homeowners feel as if all Real Estate professionals are alike, and it doesn’t matter which one you choose because they all say and do the same things. They all show houses. But that’s like saying all heart surgeons or hairdressers are alike.

Recognizing trends, seeing pluses or minuses in the subject property versus the competition, and seeing how to alter the home’s condition or price point will either pinch or profit the seller’s bottom line. Any agent can stick a sign in your garden, take pictures and write and negotiate contracts. But so much more than mundane activities go into a successful and profitable sale. A proactive agent understands product positioning and will accentuate every positive about the home that will squeeze every Euro of value out of the sale. A proactive agent will be empathetic to your needs but strong enough to stay the course to get the mission accomplished. The best professionals succeed by telling you the truth about what needs to be done to move the sale along successfully instead of only telling you what you want to hear. A strong success record equals a strong agent. Selling? Enjoy the journey!

The Real Estate professional you choose to represent your home sale and negotiate the purchase of another, will absolutely make or break the deal. The success of a home sale transaction comes down to sales skill and business acumen. Is the agent you choose one who will be passive or proactive? Is this individual a true Real Estate professional, or just someone selling houses part time? The answer will make the difference between failure and success. Don’t make the mistake of choosing someone based on personality or likability. Choose a Real Estate professional who is authentically focused on success.

Due to a tremendous year of home sales, we are in need of more properties to sell. If you’re ready to sell your home, or have been on the market for sale with no offers, contact me today on 966 718 392 or email: sales@homes4u.es. We ARE the resale specialists. “We sell houses! It’s what we do, it’s all we do!” “It’s what we’re good at!" See our advert in the centre pages of this newspaper. www.homes4u.es

Sun&High Property Inspection Sun&High has been recently established by Stuart Roberts and his partner Anca. Together they have more than 60 years combined experience in property transactions and management including top to bottom property renovating and modernising. Sun & High was created to meet what the couple perceive to be a lack of professionally qualified Home Inspectors in the area. In Northern Europe and North America it is a legal requirement to give the buyer an insight into the real condition of a property. Stuart explained: “Property buyers in Spain are often forced to rely on the opinion of an estate agent or a builder about the condition of a property rather than the expertise of a Property

Inspector when finalising a purchase.” The business provides a comprehensive audit from the roof to foundation. This includes electrical, plumbing, heating and ventilation systems as well as the fabric of the building. Every inspection includes a comprehensive report of the findings alongside recommendations for any improvements that need to be made. However, being completely independent Sun&High does not make recommendations on who should complete the work required but it does offer a follow up inspection of any work that has been completed. It also offers more specialised inspections for solar energy systems, wells, septic systems and other more complex

systems of the property. Sun&High partners have studied and qualified with InterNACHI (International Association of Home Inspectors) and undertake continuous education programmes in more advanced aspects of Property Inspection. Its reports are comprehensive and include photographs showing the complete condition of the systems inspected. The business provides inspections for all types of property including apartment buildings, Townhouses, detached Villas as well as Commercial properties. For further information contact Stuart Roberts on 691 293 801 or email: mail@sunandhigh.com or check out www.sunandhigh.com

The herald angels sing Glory to the newborn King

5. GOOD KING WENCESLAS 1. Good King Wenceslas looked out, On the feast of Stephen; When the snow lay round about Deep and crisp, and even; Brightly shone the moon that night, Though the frost was cruel, When a poor man came in-sight, Gath’ring winter fuel. 2. ‘Hither, page, and stand by me, If thou know’st it, telling, Yonder peasant, who is he? Where and what his dwelling?’ ‘Sire, he lives a good league hence, Underneath the mountain; Right against the forest fence, By Saint Agnes’ fountain.’ 3. In his master’s steps he trod, Where the snow lay dinted; Heat was in the very sod Which the Saint had printed. Therefore, Christian men, be sure, Wealth or rank possessing, Ye who now will bless the poor, Shall yourselves find blessing.

2. ONCE IN ROYAL DAVID'S CITY 1. Once in royal David’s city Stood a lowly cattle shed, Where a mother laid her baby In a manger for a bed: Mary was that Mother mild, Jesus Christ her little Child. 2. He came down to earth from heaven Who is God and Lord of all, And his shelter was a stable, And his cradle was a stall; With the poor and mean and lowly Lived on earth our Saviour holy. 3. And through all his wondrous childhood He would honour and obey, Love and watch the lowly Maiden, In whose gentle arms he lay: Christian children all must be, Mild, obedient, good as he. 4. Not in that poor lowly stable, With the oxen standing by, We shall see Him; but in heaven, Set at God’s right hand on high; Where like stars his children crowned All in white shall wait around.

THE 6. ANGELS FROM RY REALMS OF GLO 1. Angels from the realms of glory, Wing your flight o'er all the earth; Ye who sang creation's story, Now proclaim Messiah's birth: Come and worship, Come and worship, Worship Christ, the newborn King! 2. Shepherds, in the fields abiding, Watching o'er your flocks by night, God with man is now residing, Yonder shines the infant Light; Come and worship, Come and worship, Worship Christ, the newborn King! 3. Sages, leave your contemplations, Brighter visions beam afar; Seek the great desire of nations, Ye have seen His natal star; Come and worship, Come and worship, Worship Christ, the newborn King! 4. Saints before the altar bending, Watching long in hope and fear, Suddenly the Lord, descending, In His temple shall appear: Come and worship, Come and worship, Worship Christ, the newborn King!

3. AWAY IN A MANGER 1. Away in a manger, no crib for a bed, The little Lord Jesus laid down His sweet head. The stars in the bright sky looked down where He lay, The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay. 2. The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes, But little Lord Jesus no crying he makes, I love Thee, Lord Jesus! Look down from the sky And stay by my side until morning is nigh. 3. Be near me, Lord Jesus: I ask Thee to stay, Close by me for ever, and love me, I pray, Bless all the dear children in Thy tender care And fit us for heaven, to live with Thee there

4. WHILE SHEPHERDS WATCHED 1. While shepherds watched their flocks by night, All seated on the ground, The angel of the Lord came down, And glory shone around. 2. ‘To you in David’s town this day Is born of David’s line A Saviour, who is Christ the Lord; And this shall be the sign:’ 3. ‘The heavenly Babe you there shall find To human view displayed, All meanly wrapped in swathing bands, And in a manger laid.’ 4. ‘All glory be to God on high, And on the earth be peace; Good-will henceforth from heaven to men Begin and never cease.

8. JINGLE BELLS

7. THE HOLLY AND THE IVY 1. The holly and the ivy, When they are both full grown Of all the trees that are in the wood The holly bears the crown Chorus O the rising of the sun And the running of the deer The playing of the merry organ Sweet singing of the choir 2. The holly bears a blossom As white as any flower And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ To be our sweet Saviour Repeat Chorus 3. The holly bears a prickle As sharp as any thorn And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ on Christmas day in the morn. Repeat Chorus 4. The holly bears a bark As bitter as any gall; And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ For to redeem us all.

Cascabel, cascabel, Musica de amor. Dulces horas. Gratas horas, Juventud en flor. Cascabel, cascabel, Tan sentimental. No ceces, oh cascabel, De repiquetear. Dashing through the snow In a one horse open sleigh O’er the fields we go Laughing all the way Bells on bobtail ring Making spirits bright What fun it is to ride and sing A sleighing song tonight. Jingle bells, jingle bells, Jingle all the way Oh what fun it is to ride In a one horse open sleigh O jingle bells, jingle bells Jingle all the way Oh what fun it is to ride In a one horse open sleigh. Now the ground is white Go it while you’re young Take the girls tonight And sing this sleighing song Just bet a bobtail nag Two forty as his speed Hitch him to an open sleigh and crack! You’ll take the lead. Repeat chorus above

Arrest warrant for Father Ted actor An arrest warrant has been issued for wellknown actor Gerard McSorley after he failed to turn up in court to face a series of charges. The Father Ted actor, best known for playing Fr Todd Unctious in the popular comedy series, was due to appear at Letterkenny District Court in Co Donegal after being arrested on 26th November last over a breach of the peace. The 69-year-old actor had been taken to Letterkenny Garda station after allegedly engaging in threatening, insulting or abusive behaviour. While at the station, it's claimed, McSorley

continued to breach the peace. He is also charged with damaging property while in the cell at Letterkenny Garda Station. Details of the second charge against the actor are revealed in the charge sheets. It alleges McSorley consistently spat at the cell door. The charge reads "(You) did without lawful excuse damage property, to with, cell door by constantly spitting on it during your stay in Garda custody and covering same in saliva resulting in the cell having to be cleaned belonging to Chief Superintendent of Letterkenny Garda station." McSorley, with an address at Trinity Court,

Norton's starstudded guests for NYE show revealed Newtowncunningham, Co Donegal, did not appear in court to answer the charges. No legal representations were made on his behalf when the case was called before Judge Paul Kelly. Judge Kelly issued a bench warrant for McSorley's arrest. The actor, who has appeared in several films and TV plays, has also appeared in many well-known films including Braveheart, Veronica Guerin and Angela's Ashes. He is originally from Omagh in Co Tyrone but has been living in Co Donegal for many years.

Let's be real, New Year's Day is pretty terrible. But at least there's the annual New Year's Eve special of The Graham Norton Show from the night before on replay. This year's special has a top line-up too, with Loveliest Guy in Hollywood Tom Hanks on to talk about his role as beloved American entertainer Mr Rogers in the movie A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood (which everyone absolutely loved). Line of Duty star Stephen Graham will chat about new drama White House Farm

and hopefully give us an update on his Peaky Blinders role, while new Strictly Come Dancing judge Motsi Mabuse will be on to talk about her first series on the BBC series. In terms of music, Spice Girl Melanie C and LGBTQ+ troupe Sink the Pink will be performing their dancefloor-friendly banger 'High Heels' The Graham Norton Show NYE Special will air on Tuesday, December 31 at 10:25pm on BBC One.

Ultimate hangover cure found according to scientists With party season upon us there are plenty of things to think about - what to wear, secret Santa gifts, menu options - and of course how you're going to feel the next day! Having a hangover is the worst part of any good night out, and most of us have a tried and tested remedy or else just lie in bed and call in sick. Now scientists have come up with what they beleive is the ultimate hangover cure a combination of ingredients designed to counteract the damage done by alcohol and the symptoms of too much drinking. According to Dr Shraddha Srinivasan and colleagues at the Institute of Chemical Technology in Mumbai, a drink made of coconut water, pear and lime will do the trick. They beleive the tasty breakfast drink will boost two key enzymes which break down alcohol in the body. To be precise, the drink should be 65 per cent pear juice, a quarter lime juice and 10 per cent coconut water. You can also boost the healing effect by eating cheese, tomato and cucumber at the same time. The study also found that a staple hangover cure for many -

coffee - can make things much worse. The study says: "A beverage made from a blend of sweet lime, pear, and coconut water could be used to overcome hangover. The consumption of this beverage with cheese, cucumber, and

tomatoes may further alleviate the hangover symptoms." The study also recommends black tea, green tea, probiotioc yoghurt, wheat, turmeric, ginger, dates and cocoa. But you should avoid milk, oats, peanuts, nutmeg, cumin, cinnamon, vitamin C, coffee and eggs. The 'good' foods and pear drink help break down acetaldehyde by boosting dehydrogenase and aldehyde dehydrogenase in the liver. Until the acetaldehyhe is broken down you will continue to feel bad - with headaches, nausea and other familiar hangover symptoms. So the quicker you break it down the better. They found commercial hangover cures and antioxidants had no impact on the enzymes helping end your hangover. They added: "Coffee decreased the ALDH activity by a large magnitude; hence it is not advisable to consume coffee post alcohol intake as it might lead to acetaldehyde build-up resulting in prolonged hangover." The study was recently published in Current Research in Food Science.

The benefits of going alcoholfree for a month Whether you’re enjoying catch-up beers with high school friends or sipping on white wine at an office happy hour, alcohol is often time a given in social situations, and especially so during the holidays. But with the end of all the festivities, for some, comes dry January. Started by a British organisation called Alcohol Change UK, dry January challenges adults to abstain from alcohol for the month of the new year in order to reset their relationship with booze. Some people take the challenge as part of a New Year’s resolution to drink less, while others simply do it to feel better after enjoying plenty of cocktails and wine in the months prior. Here, experts break down how dry January works, its potential benefits, and how to try the sober-curious experiment for yourself.

Why is dry January so popular? According to Alcohol Change UK, millions of people participate every year. “Dry January is an opportunity to make not drinking, whether for an evening, a month, or longer, feel more normal,” the organisation says on its website. “Many of us feel under pressure to drink, or to drink more than we want to—and we think it would be better if everyone had more choice.” Of course, the holiday season often involves overindulging in all sorts of tasty foods and drinks, alcohol included, so you may notice that you’ve gained an extra pound or two, aren’t sleeping too well, or generally want a health reset. And since January is synonymous with

New Year’s resolutions, it’s an ideal time to take on a healthy challenge. Plus, the short-term, 31-day commitment feels doable for most people. What are the benefits of going alcoholfree for a month? While one person may partake in dry January to get back into a healthy routine, another may be contemplating permanent sobriety. Regardless, most people can expect to experience a number of pretty profound benefits when going booze-free.

1. You’ll learn a lot about your relationship with alcohol. Since alcohol is such a big part of socializing, it can easily become mindless. If this sounds true for you, you will benefit greatly from taking a step back and rethinking your patterns during a dry January. You may realise that you need to adjust your intake, especially because everyone responds to alcohol differently. It’s a great opportunity to tune into your body and see how it’s really affecting you. If you’re concerned that you might have an unhealthy relationship with booze, Aaron White, Ph.D., senior scientific advisor to the director of the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) recommends checking out the Rethinking Drinking website, which can help you assess your alcohol use heading into a dry January. (Their Treatment Navigator can also help

you learn more about treatment options.)

2. You could save money. According to research published in the journal Health Psychology on 857 British men and women who participated in dry January, 79 percent reported that they saved money. If the average beer costs about 3 euros, abstaining from downing two or three beers every weekend in January can save you upwards of 35e.

3. Your sleep and energy may improve. Even if you think alcohol helps you fall asleep, it often leads to restless sleep throughout the night. Given that, removing alcohol can lead to more restorative sleep and more energy during the day. According to the NIAAA, processing alcohol suppresses the deepest stage of sleep (called REM), which is largely

responsible for our feeling well-rested come morning. Research backs this up, with 62 percent of participants in that Health Psychology study reporting better sleep and energy.

4. You might even lose weight. Since alcohol contains empty calories (and is often a significant source of carbs), cutting it out for a month can support

weight loss. Plus, you also eliminate the risk of making not-so-healthy eating choices after having a few drinks. Even just 31 days without alcohol can make a difference, considering almost half of the Health Psychology study participants reported losing weight during dry January. Other research confirms the link between alcohol consumption and weight, with one American Journal of Clinical Nutrition study identifying a positive link between drinking and weight gain in middle-aged men, regardless of the type of alcohol they consumed.

5. You might afterward.

drink

less

During a dry January, “that glass of wine at dinner or happy hour with colleagues will need a substitution. Once you’ve established that, yes, you can totally order a club soda at happy hour, you may continue to do so after dry January. In fact, 50 percent of the Health Psychology study participants reported that they drank less often—and had fewer drinks—throughout the six months after their dry January ended.

6. Your body will thank you. Alcohol is inflammatory, meaning it triggers your body’s stress response. When you down a boozy drink, your system breaks it down into a toxic chemical called acetaldehyde and free radicals, which damage your cells. As a

result, alcohol consumption can contribute to a variety of health concerns. According to a study published in BMJ Open, average drinkers who ditched booze for one month generally improved their insulin sensitivity, lowered their blood pressure, improved their liver function, reduced their cholesterol, and decreased their levels of VEGF (a cancerpromoting growth factor).

How to approach dry January in a healthy, sustainable way While doing a dry January may be easy for some people, others may have more difficulty, so share the challenge with your friends and family, or see if they’ll join you. For chronic, heavy alcohol users, know that abruptly giving booze the boot can contribute to dangerous withdrawals. Depending on how much and how often a person drank, withdrawal symptoms could include insomnia, restlessness, sweating, anxiety, nausea, seizures, and even death. If you’ve ever struggled with alcoholism, consult with your physician before attempting a dry January. A support group or therapist can also help you navigate the challenge if you’re concerned about your overall relationship with alcohol—and its impact on your health, well-being, and relationships. Of course, take extra care if and when you do reintroduce alcohol back into your life after dry January. Your tolerance can diminish during that time, leading to larger than expected impairment when your begin drinking again. Come February 1, feel free to enjoy a drink or two, but take it slow to gauge how you feel.

Spanish team pioneers stem cell treatment for Crohn's disease A team of doctors at the Montecelo hospital in Pontevedra have carried out the first stem cell surgery in Spain to treat patients with Crohn's disease combined with complex perianal fistula. Crohn's disease affects over a million people in the European Union, and

perianal fistulas are one of the most debilitating complications of the disease. The health authorities in Pontevedra have proudly announced the "leading role" their staff have assumed in this field and emphasised the importance of the investigative

project - the fruit of "interdisciplinary work" that has been carried out since June 2012 with "continuous coordination" between specialists in the digestive system, general surgery, pharmacy and radiology. The initiative is a joint project with the Japanese biopharmaceutical company Takeda, which signed a risksharing agreement with the Ministry of Health to finance the application of this stem cell therapy in the National Health System.

In a pioneering project, 11 patients suffering from Crohn's and perianal fistulas were included in an experimental stem cell treatment programme. In five of those cases the treatment was successful, in three cases it was partially successful and the remaining three patients are still under observation.

What is the Elephant Effect? You have possibly heard of stories of drivers being fined for having their shopping on the back seat of the car, or for having a dog incorrectly secured, and other similar reasons, and the question always arises as to why. We can explain the most common reason for these fines being education through enforcement to raise awareness of a very serious problem, and like all traffic law it is because it is unsafe, as you will see when we explain a phenomenon known as the “elephant effect”. The Elephant Effect is the result of the laws of physics that cause an object thrown at high speed to multiply its weight compared to if it were stationary. This means that any loose object inside the vehicle becomes a dangerous projectile that puts the safety of the occupants of the vehicle at risk in case of harsh braking or a sudden stop in the event of a collision. To explain it another way, even though your vehicle may slow down or stop abruptly, loose objects will continue to move in the direction of travel driven by the momentum and will weigh

more than if they were sat still. When we talk about loose objects, we don´t only mean shopping, or animals, the same applies to people who are not secured, such as rear seat passengers, which is where the “Elephant Effect” becomes more apparent, as if a passenger in the back seat is thrown forward through a collision their weight may multiply to around 4,000 kilos, the weight of an elephant. Let us talk about the science bit. A loose object inside the car can multiply its weight by between 30 and 50 times in a crash at 50 kilometres per hour. Here we have some examples of what that means: A box of bottles weighing 18 kilos will impact the windshield with the same force as if a cow of 540 kilos. A suitcase of only five kilos, will hit the driver with the same force that a 150 kilos lion would. A beach umbrella, weighing three kilos, would be propelled and hit with the same force as a 90-kilo wild boar. An umbrella that only weighs 415

grams would weigh five kilos And what many vehicleoccupants have loose in the car, the mobile phone, weighing in at around 150 grams, but if it were propelled forward in a collision the Elephant Effect would turn it into a projectile capable of hitting with a force of 1.5 kilos. Avoiding the Elephant Effect is easier than you might think. Firstly, ensure that groceries, luggage, bags etc are carried securely in the boot. Secondly, for other loose items such as sunglasses, chargers, mints etc, use the glove box or the side pockets in the doors. Many vehicles have pockets in the seats for rear-seated passengers to use, and so use them. As for your mobile, make sure that is also securely stowed, out of sight and harm´s way if you are not using it for mapping services but if you are then make sure it is in a secure location, using an approved cradle, and where it also doesn’t interfere with your primary field of vision.

MIDWEEK PREMIER LEAGUE ACTION ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Welcome to the Amazon Prime of football chat. It’s the same teams, the same person telling you about the teams and probably even the same ‘analysis’ written in the same office just with a different logo on the door but hey - you’re addicted to this rubbish we are pushing so you’ll lap it up anyway, even if they will buffer for 90 minutes. And if you are really lucky, I’ll get Jim Rosenthal out of retirement to pass comment too. Yes, we had a full programme of Premier League action this week, if you could be bothered to add it to your shopping cart. With Gabby Jesus sticking a couple in his basket, Marco Silva checking out after a derby day hammering at Anfield and Freddie

Ljungberg’s start at Arsenal meaning the board will be seeing if there are any last-minute offers with instant free delivery available, Amazon are here and you can’t really tell the difference.

point, let alone post-90 minutes, and Jamie Vardy notched for the 7th Premier League game in a row, the 7th on the trot that Leicester have won.

club plan to appoint David Moyes after they lose to Chelsea at the weekend. Jose Mourinho left Old Trafford a beaten man, so no change there then.

Unless you switch the commentary off, which when you get offered Robbie Savage really is a step in the right direction. Manchester City created their own light at Turf Moor, Jesus starting a busy time of year (personally and for the team) with a brace in a convincing 4-1 win. Rodri scored a Thundercracker and admitted that the team partied in the changing room afterwards, knowing what a big win it had been. I’d imagine each of the team turned on the torch on their super deluxe smartphone and had the best party ever seen in Burnley. Afterwards, Peppy G said it would be ‘crazy’ to even think about the title - especially as everyone keeps saying Liverpool have won it already and due to the fact that City are third behind Leicester, who just keep winning. Brentan pleaded with fans to stop leaving early to beat the traffic, saying that they are a team that ‘will keep going until the 90th minute’. A note to all opponents then, injury time might be a good time to attack, attack and attack again - they’ll have downed tools. Watford, now sans Sanchez Flores, didn’t opt to attack at any

Freddie Ljungberg has taken just 180 minutes to suss out that ‘this isn’t Arsenal’ after his temporary side got beaten 2-1 at home to Brighton. Arsenal’s answer could have been simple - lock Graham Potter in the away changing room post-match until he agreed to take over. Apparently Ljungberg contacted Arsene Wenger before the match for some advice - and Wenger told him to leave the jumper at home. Judging on the performance, he suggested some tactical stuff too. Sheffield United battered Newcastle at Bramall Lane - the only small issue being that Newcastle scored twice and they didn’t. Surely someone, somewhere will give Steve Bruce some credit by now, no?

We’ve been here before, haven’t we? Liverpool would be wise to keep half an eye on what Rodgers is up to, but they won’t be feeling the breath on their necks just yet after King Kloppo knocked up his 100th Premier League victory, costing Silva his Everton job in the process. Divock Origi doesn’t score many goals, but he does score goals in the games that matter as Liverpool stuck five past their hapless rivals by, basically, knocking it in behind and chasing. Silva felt confident going into the game, and we can only presume he meant confident that the jig was up. And, if Everton fans haven’t suffered enough with Big Sham and Silva - the

Marcus Rashford is in the best form of his life, terrorising Serge Aurier as United beat Spurs 2-1 - ending Mourinho’s perfect start but also continuing the theme of two goals conceded per game. Solskjaer said prematch he wasn’t scared of the fact that many better managers than he are currently out of work (I am paraphrasing, of course) and he showed it by out-tacticing a top-six rival once again. Tammy Abraham must have really loved his time at Aston Villa, given the amount of chances he missed against them at Stamford Bridge. His 25-goal spell there last season clearly left a mark as he refused to celebrate when he did finally hit the target.

West Ham showed their delightfully consistent side by losing 2-0 to Wolves, a team that goes behind in pretty much every game they play except against the Hammers. Eddie Howe is a boyhood Everton fan, and he is doing his usual trick of losing matches just as the jobs that might interest him become available. Howe, the youngest gaffer in the league (I think, I mean how old is Hayden Mullins and does he count?), lost to the oldest manager in town - Uncle Roy Hodgson, as Palace managed to win 1-0 with ten men. I wonder if Andros had a flutter on big Mama getting a red in his comeback match?

TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT So, when United lost to Spurs and Man City Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was going to be stepping aside for the Poch, wasn’t he? It’s amazing what seven days in football can do. City fans have probably seen Peppy G tearing his hair out in a Manc Derby at the Etihad for the last time and will probably be hoping that Angelino doesn’t play in too many more either. What is it with City and left-backs? It’s a worry when the only United player that could probably get a regular game for Pep’s lot is Ashley Young. Isn’t it about time Solskjaer started getting some proper credit? He’s out tacticed Pep, Jose, Chelsea’s Frank Lampard and King Kloppo this season. OK, he’s also got it very wrong a few times but there’s only so many different colours you can paint a bad bathroom before you find yourself in B&Q buying a whole new one. United had a plan and it worked over 90 minutes. Sure, it was fairly basic - get it into the quick lads up top as quickly as possible, but it worked. For much of the match, Daniel James and Marcus Rashford made it almost a credible argument that they have had better starts to their United careers than Cristiano Ronaldo - hey, I said almost credible. Aaron Wan-Bissaka won his duel with Raheem Sterling, James made Angelino wish that City hadn’t used that buy-back clause from PSV and it looks like Gareth Southgate might be on to something where Kyle Walker is concerned. And, finally, VAR did good in awarding a penalty that should have been given in the first place. City will be wondering if they are Aston Villa in

disguise. 14 points is the gap between City and Liverpool now. 14 points. If Liverpool lose the next five and City win the next five, then City would be top of the table and, honestly, can you see that happening? That said, Leicester aren’t slowing down either. The last time Jamie Vardy scored eight games in a row something pretty special happened (although nobody else seemed to want to win the title that season). Tyrone Mings thought it would be a good idea to try and defend against Vardy with a done hamstring, and it didn’t end well as Leicester’s number nine scored the kind of goal that tells you things are going his way. Leicester are now six points ahead of City and are even getting a tune out of Keleachi Iheanacho - not many have done that. Plus Brentan has a new deal, could it be better for the Foxes? Well done, Big Dunc. Now it’s time to step aside. It’s not going to get better than that, mate. Not that I am one to tell Duncan Ferguson what to do, he is slightly bigger and slighter harder than me. But he really should call it a day now, hero cult status fully intact. Arsene Wenger called it ‘emotional doping’ way back when Newcastle appointed Alan Shearer to save them from relegation - it didn’t work and Arsene was right, appointing a manager purely based on some kind of weird emotional thinking due to a connection with a club is crazy thinking. But, for those couple of games where Ferguson can get away with a 90s style, dogs of war, 442 up and at ‘em approach - fill your boots, Toffees. CAS might be tempted to overturn their decision to reduce Chelsea’s

transfer ban after their performance at Goodison Park - after all, they clearly felt Frank Lampard’s team had benefitted from not being allowed to spend any money and wanting to really punish them by allowing them to potentially ruin a good thing in January. Everton were expectedly up for it - and you can’t be too far from the truth if you think Big Dunc’s team-talk was something like, ‘you’d better put on a performance or it’s David Moyes next!’ The first goal of the interim reign could have been scored by the big man himself - the perfect cross met by Richarlison who, once again, showed he can play a bit if he isn’t pretending to be inured. Despite the Toffee’s scoring three, easily the best moment was Craig Pawson saying Christian Pulisic’s foul throw late on was ‘the worst throw-in I’ve ever seen’ - one for the lipreaders amongst us. Eddie Howe really, really doesn’t want the Everton job, clearly. Losing 3-0 at home to Liverpool isn’t going to endear the Bournemouth manager to the club he has supported as a boy, even if the three-goal margin suggests he’d fit in just fine. Another weekend, another Liverpool win. Mauricio Pochettino turned Moussa Sissoko into a defensive midfielder. Jose Mourinho, just because he can, is turning him into a goal-scoring one as the Frenchman scored for the second Premier League game at home in a row. It was a sensible plan for Spurs to score as many as they could as quickly as possible before they started to let in the elementary goals that would spark confidence in the opposition - it turns out that five is enough for the other lot to down tools and not score twice. And

what a five they were - Harry Kane setting the tone before Sonny started running from his own half and only stopped because he scored. Brighton and Watford treated us to all their good stuff in a short space of time in the first-half. Two managers who should be in demand, given the state of some clubs right now. But why would they leave when they both seem to be on a good thing where they are? We’ve already said that Solskjaer has had a good week, but what about Steve Bruce? Newcastle left the City match unscathed, beat Sheffield United in the week and saw off Southampton yesterday - Bruce is 10th in the league. That’s better than Rafa, no? Is it too soon to start suggesting that Mike Ashley does know what he is doing? It says here Andy Carroll floated one in for Jonjo Shelvey to head home - are we sure they’ve got that the right way round? Someone else who knows what they are up to is Chris Wilder. Sheff United are now 17 matches unbeaten away from home, stretching back to last season. They won 2-1 on the road at Norwich having been behind - both Arsenal and Everton need a new manager don’t forget. Watford have opted for Nigel Pearson as the man to keep them in the Premier League. I think that means that if he keeps them up we should all go big on Leicester City winning the league next season - that’s how it works, isn’t it? Pearson was in the stands as his new side held Crystal Palace to a 0-0 draw at Vicarage Road. Fortunately, or unfortunately, depending on your opinion of Pearson, the contract was signed before he was subjected to one of the worst matches of the season.

Elche CF secure a great Point against Top of the Table Cadiz Elche CF v Cadiz, Sunday 8th December, kick off 21:00, attendance 16,625 A zero-zero draw this week for Cadiz v Elche means that Pacheta’s men increase their record of consecutive games without a loss to 6. With the 1 point gained during the late Sunday evening match, the club remains in 7th position and within touching distance of those holy grail play off places. This follows a week of great change for the local club. After 14 years as major share holder of Elche CF, Sepulchre sold for an alleged sum of around 22 million euros to Cristian Bragarnik, a South American Football Agent for both players and coaches including Diego Maradona. However, the team did not let this unsettle them, and played with a rhythm and confidence born from their latest results. They also gained inspiration from Fidel #16 who was crowned as Segunda Division player of the month for November. Fidel, a left winger, has appeared for Elche 16 times scoring 6 goals. This weeks game was a huge test for the Franjiverdes as the yellow shirts of Cadiz have only lost 3 and drawn 3 games all season. Both sides played with a high level of skill and intensity, creating

Sport

CostaBlancaPeople 10th - 16th December 2019

chances and blocking attacks. With 55% of possession Elche had 7 shots, whilst the home team, bolstered by their vocal and numerous supporters, had 14 chances with just 45% possession. The secure hands of Elche goalie Edgar #13, seemed to attract the on target shots with a magical magnetism, saving the score line on more than one occasion. Central midfielder, 21 year old Gonzalo Villar #8 was instrumental to the teams performance. The best chance of the game came when substitute defender Lopez #13, after just a few minutes of play broke through 4 defenders sadly his shot went just wide. The final minutes of the first half could have been game, changing had the header from Cadiz’s Perea not sailed millimetres above the cross bar. During the last minutes of the game Cadiz really turned up the heat, but they were denied each time by the visitors. Book to join the EuroTourGuide Coach Tour for the next home match at the Martinez Valero against Las Palmas on Sunday 15th December. It is 20€ per adult for return travel and match ticket in the Fondo Sur Cubierta, picking up from the Orihuela Costa, Torrevieja Carrefour, Quesada, Rojales and La Marina.

Pool league grand final

Netball tournament in Rojales On Saturday 9 November over 80 netball players gathered in Rojales for their Annual tournament. The teams were from Madrid, Valencia, L'Alfaz del Pi, La Manga, Pinoso and Rojales themselves. Rojales progressed through the round robin stage of the competition with wins against Madrid B 13-1, La Manga 9-1, Pinoso A 11-1 and a very hard fought 6-3 win against Valencia A meaning they finished top of their Group. Into the Quarter Finals, and with only 6 mins each way to play, Rojales had to ensure they scored off their own centres and to work hard defensively to stop the opposition scoring. Tracey and Claire overturned the ball in defence on numerous occasions and Nicola, Angela and Katie worked it through the centre court into the scoring duo of Sam and Wendy. The reward for their efforts being a 9-2 win and a place in the Semi Finals against Alfaz.

Rojales had recently faced Alfaz in a different competition and knew they would have to be on top of their game to win this one. Both teams started nervously but it wasn't long before Rojales' experience started to show and the result was a 8-4 win. The final loomed and Rojales would, as in previous tournaments, play against Madrid A. The match started off very scrappily until the teams settled and the game went almost goalfor-goal with a half time score of 3-3. Madrid started the second half the stronger by taking advantage of Rojales' missed shot and converting that and the next two on the trot into their own net.

Six National Records for CN Torrevieja Masters swimmer The 2019 – 2020 swimming season has got off to a fantastic start for members of the CN Torrevieja Masters swimming team. The Masters team has recently been re-established with the first three swimmers participating in the first two competitions of the season. Already 6 national records have been smashed by Beryl Altabas in the 75+ age category. In the season’s first competition on 10th November, held in the 25m pool, Monte Tossal, Alicante 381 swimmers from 15 of the regions clubs competed across a range of races. Beryl Altabas started with a new record in the 100m Individual Medley event with a time of 2:03:24. She quickly followed this with a second record in the 200m freestyle event, 3:43:76, in which she also broke the 100m record with her time splits. Colleagues Christine Johnson and Vicki Connolly also were placed first and second in their two races. Three weeks later on 30th November in the Olympic 50m pool Esperanza Lag, Elche Beryl continued to smash more long standing records. The 50m Butterfly record for the 75+ female category had stood since 2006 but Beryl knocked 3 seconds off the record with a time of 1:00:04 and continued to follow this with a further record in the

800m freestyle knocking 1:30 of the previous record set last year with a time of 15:29:40 and will also achieve a further record in the 200m freestyle for her time split from this race. Team mates Christine and Vicki again were placed 1st and 2nd in the races and age categories. The next competition is the two

day Winter Regional Championships on 11 and 12 January 2020 in Castellon, Valencia. CN Torrevieja are hoping new members will join the team as the season progresses and for further information contact the club on 622600965
