Taxi driver attempts Alicante kidnap A cabify taxi driver sped off with four young female passengers before hitting a roundabout in Alicante,

telling them “This trip will be free for you. The girls told how the driver seemed perfectly normal until they got near to their destination and then he hit the accelerator, speeding over tram tracks and sending his passengers into a terrified frenzy.

It seemed like a routine journey, the four young girls asked for a Cabify car to return home last Saturday night in Alicante. However, the trip was about to become a terrifying ordeal for Clara, Andrea, Lucia and Alicia, who are now recovering from the injuries suffered.

At around 11pm the young women were on the Rambla in Alicante and wanted to go to an address in Avenida Vincente Hipolito in Playa de San Juan. Everything was normal until they reached their destination. "We told him where he had to stop for Continued on page 3

BITE SIZE NEWS:

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas This Wednesday, the 18th of December, Torrevieja’s Christmas Market officially opens. At 6pm a series of Christmas stalls on Paseo Vista Alegre will open to the public. There will be daily performances by local artists and dance academies. The fair itself will feature Christmas sweets, handicrafts as well as a ‘gastro’ area with several food trucks and a stage for performances and activities. The small and medium business association, APYMECO, is supporting the town’s Christmas campaign by placing an arch of lights for photocalls on Calle Concepción – the street which links the Christmas market and Plaza de la Constitución. APYMECO is also running a Christmas raffle where the lucky winner gets a weekend away in a country house. To enter, simply make a purchase in participating shops in the town centre. Also this week, Carols in the Plaza takes place every day from 5.30pm where a variety of different local choirs take to the stage in Plaza de la Constitución to sing a host of traditional Christmas songs. A special visit of Santa Claus and his elves will take place on December 23 in the Plaza de la Constitución from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. while the royal visit of the Three Kings will be on January 2, 3 Continued on page 5

us and from there we have no idea what was going on in his head," continues Clara Garrido, who ordered the Cabify car and suffered a broken rib, a deep tear in her finger and bruises all over the body. Her companions also suffered multiple injuries in the accident, but luckily none were seriously injured. "When we indicated where he had to drop us, he started to accelerate without any explanation. We started yelling at him to stop, but he kept going, dodging several cars, until we hit the roundabout of the TRAM, flying above the road.”

The girls also claim that when they reported their experience to Cabify they were told that on their next three trips they would give us a 15% discount! The company explained to Clara that they are not responsible for the driver actions and that they just put users and companies transporting people in contact.

Clara said that until then the trip was normal and the driver was driving sensibly. However, during the journey he talked about himself and details of his private life, telling the girls he was recently separated and that it was his birthday but nobody had congratulated him. Then he made the odd comment about the trip being free. Police and ambulances rushed to the scene where the driver tested positive for amphetamine use.

HELP Vega Baja exceeds all expectations Help Vega Baja and its volunteers have been working harder than usual, if that’s possible, and the charity recently raised 3,400 euros through its Christmas Fayre. It is increasing this to 3,500 and is donating it to Apanee, Torrevieja. The success of the event is fully credited to the volunteers, who all work tirelessly, particularly Erna, the Charity Sales Co-ordinator who organised the event and added lots of personal touches making it a great day. Thank yous also go to The Enthusiasticals, which provided the vocal accompaniment which was enjoyed by everyone and to the local community who came along and supported the event including the numerous local businesses who sponsored a table – all of which raised a significant amount on the day. From the kind support the charity received, it was able to offer a considerable number of raffle prizes, including a 43 inch television. Any prizes that were not claimed on the day are available to collect from the

charity’s head office in San Miguel and will be stored there until the end of the year. Throughout 2019, HELP Vega Baja has distributed in excess of 77,000 euros to good causes within the Vega Baja area. This includes donations made to individuals who were

experiencing difficult times for whatever reason, other charities and in particular those affected by the devastating floods which hit the local area in September. Charity president Michele Masson said: “We would like to thank everyone who has raised funds and entrusted us to ensure that these funds are directed to

those most in need. This work is ongoing and although 25,000 has been distributed to people who need help in order to return to their homes, we still have more to work through. “As has been the case for the past few years, Help Vega Baja has allocated funds (approx. 24,000 euros) for several towns and this will be distributed by social service departments who will use the funds to ensure that families in need have fresh food over the Christmas period and the help goes where it is needed most. HELP Vega Baja would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone – individuals, other organisations and businesses for the tremendous support we have received throughout 2019. Without this, we would be unable to help people in the way we do. Also, our volunteers who are simply outstanding people who are always prepared to go that extra mile to ‘get the job done’. We wish everyone a very happy Christmas and look forward to great things in 2020.”

Agamed to invest €2.6m in water system Water management company Agamed is set to invest 2.6 million euro in improving Torrevieja’s drinking water and sanitation network in 2020. The Mayor met last week with the board of directors of Agamed to address budgets, the improvement of the drinking water in the town, sanitation and the way in which rainwater is managed in the town. Improvements are needed in sanitation and sewerage in order to improve the evacuation of waste water, expanding the existing infrastructure to cope with the current needs of the population and also to address problem areas in certain urbanisations where blockages occur.

Town hall supports protest The town hall of Torrevieja has revealed its support of the forthcoming protest by parents and families against the controversial introduction of the Plurilingual Decree. A protest of huge proportions is set to take place on January 18th in the city of Orihuela and will be attended by parents, families and schoolchildren from across the region. The controversial legislation will force schools to teach more subjects through Valencian (many claim, regardless of the proficiency of teachers or students in the language). Torrevieja’s councillor for Education has assured local AMPA (parents association) groups that they can count on the support of the town hall and in fact, the town hall intends to send a delegation to accompany local families to the protest. Councillor Recuero said that by accompanying local families to the protest, the town hall wants to show that it values the importance of families’ feelings regarding the controversial law.

Guardia Civil arrest burglary gang The Guardia Civil have dismantled a gang which was responsible for a series of robberies on homes in the Vega Baja recently. Over recent months, officers in Almoradí detected an increase in break ins in urbanisations in Rojales, Benijófar and Algorfa. The gang travelled in a large vehicle, periodically chancing the licence plates to evade police. The gang would meet in a garage in Orihuela Costa where they would hide the car and change into dark clothing in order to commit the burglaries. The gang would communicate with each other via walkie talkie and would often hit more than one house per night. They stole jewellery and cash as well as computers and mobile phones. The arrests were made in Torrevieja when two Albanaian men and a Spanish woman were charged with a total of 12 burglaries, falsifying number plates and belonging to a criminal gang. They were also charged with illegal possession of weapons.

Mar Ezcurra, Councillor for Culture and Youth, has launched the extensive Christmas program designed to celebrate the holidays in all corners of the municipality. One hundred activities, all of them free, have already begun and will fill the streets and squares of Orihuela Costa, the districts and the city. Children's workshops, theatre, concerts, nativity scenes, Christmas routes, special lighting in municipal museums, storytelling and parades are just some of the activities that the whole family can enjoy this Christmas. As a first this Christmas the Department of Culture will illuminate all the Municipal Museums for those visiting the city for some festive shopping or fun. To take advantage of this special lighting, three Christmas Routes have been organised to cover the main illuminated museums from 8pm on Thursday 19th December, the 26th December and 2nd January. Each of these will have a special feature and on all of the walks you can listen to a carol concert. On the first walk Santa Claus and his assistants will accompany the route an on the second

walk participants will be able to enjoy typical Christmas sweets and on the last route the Pages of the Magi will accompany the walkers and collect wish letters for the Three Kings. On the Coast, 25th December will be celebrated again at la Zenia beach where the local multi-cultural community traditionally gathers in festive fancy dress to sing carols and share cava and Christmas cheer. This is an event not to be missed if you have never experienced it. The Dacapo Musical Group together with the Department of Rural Development has scheduled more than 30 musical performances which will be rolled out across the municipality including the districts and coast. Added to these concerts are children's activities such as storytelling, workshops, magic shows and inflatables. This campaign is supported by the printing of 10,000 brochures listing all the Christmas activities, and includes a QR code which is linked to the website: www.navidadenorihuela.com where they can check all the events and get the latest information.

Christmas Jumper Day It was a holly jolly Christmas Jumper Day on Friday when locals gathered in their festive finery to help raise funds for flood victims. The idea came from Claire Woodham from Kosta Kitchens who approached the Costa Blanca People earlier this year with a view to holding a Christmas themed fundraiser to raise money locally. In the aftermath of the devastating floods which hit the Vega Baja region in September, the Costa Blanca People has been working with the charity Help Vega Baja to publicise the massive fundraising efforts that were underway across the area. As Christmas approached, we learned that Help Vega Baja were continuing to help flood victims get back on their feet. With many families having spent all their savings on putting their homes right after the flood damage, there isn’t a lot left for luxuries such as Christmas. Help Vega Baja told us that some families had been forced to live out of one single room – cooking, eating and sleeping in the one space as the rest of their homes had become inhabitable. We called on locals to take part on Friday 13th December and all of the monies raised will go to Help Vega Baja to directly help those families still reeling from the floods. Whether the money buys a Christmas gift for a child, or perhaps goes some way

towards paying for meat for the Christmas dinner table, it will go in some way to making Christmas a bit happier for families who have been through so much this year. We’re still working out how much Friday raised and we hope to publicise a final amount soon but donations came from many places and are still rolling in. Sunley’s Bar in Formentera were far too busy having fun to take any photos but raised €50. The Euro Golf Society held a Christmas Jumper themed golf day and raised €65 from players in their festive best. The clients and staff at Hair OTT in Los Balcones raised €70 and the Torrevieja gift shop ‘Fancy That’ raised a wonderful €154 and owner Dyvonne rounded the total up to €200 saying “I’m so grateful to all of my customers for their support, they have done me so proud.” The volunteer team at Help Vega Baja itself raised €56 by hosting a mini Christmas Jumper party for the volunteers. The Phoenix International Concert Band hosted a Christmas carol service at Villamartin Plaza, playing all the traditional favourites (...in Christmas Jumpers, of course!) raising €240.67! Gloria from the Phoenix International Concert Band told the Costa Blanca People, “We had a good crowd who sang heartily at Villamartin Plaza and

considering the late planning for the band to play Christmas carols there, it was well attended. In the audience was our previous Musical Director, Julie Schofield, who was invited to conduct the band for one of the carols by our present MD Robert Wilson. Jacques van der Linden, the leader of our affiliated choir De Costa Singers, also conducted one of the carols. We’d like to thank everyone who kindly donated and we wish to make Villamartin Plaza an annual event and have arranged with the Plaza to play there for Christmas Jumper Day 2020 together with De Costa Singers!” Jim Brogan of the Torresur Coalition of Communities reached out to all of his members about Christmas Jumper Day and was able to bring a cash donation of €150! With another €60 raised by Kosta Kitchens who provided mince pies and wine to anyone dropping in to donate, and a further €30 in donations by members of the public it is hoped the total amount will surpass €700 which will be a big help to these families at Christmas. We are awaiting news from other participants and hope to publish a total soon. There is still time to donate, so please contact the Costa Blanca People, Kosta Kitchens or Help Vega Baja for information on how to donate.

Bigastro only Valencian municipality to participates in Climate Summit The City Council of Bigastro has been present at the International Climate Confederation presenting its environmental project. The Mayor Teresa Belmonte and the Councillor for the Environment, Antonio Meseguer, represented the municipality, the only one from the Valencian Community to participated in the COP25 Climate Summit in Madrid.

The Mayor has indicated that her role in this event has been to continue fulfilling the commitment to help reduce global warming and its effects on the climate that affects our region. "We still have in our sights the effects that the September DANA caused in the Vega Baja", Belmonte explained in her presentation, held in the Green Pavilion, and told the rest of the world that climate

change is a reality that affects everyone. For this reason the representatives of Bigastro did not want to miss the opportunity to show the video of Fuerza Vega Baja which documents the catastrophe suffered across the region due to the weather. During the presentation a video was also shown, made by the Councillor for the Environment to highlight some of the environmental projects carried out and that are still being developed in the municipality. These projects were also show on the Stand of the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP), the entity that invited Bigastro to be part of this summit in light of its environmental practices. These include projects such as: Sustainable Christmas, Sponsor a Tree, Adopt a Tree in Commerce, the environmental recovery of debris, safeguarding the cultivation of esparto grass, bioconstruction in public works and the sun in public buildings. The reduction of CO2 emissions, conserving and protecting the Environment, promoting resource efficiency, increasing biodiversity, saving and energy efficiency, sustainable mobility, education and efficient construction and bio-construction, are all part of the commitment by the City of Bigastro and showcased during the COP25 international arena.

Guardamar Castle improvements The improvements being made to the walled city and Guardamar castle are already underway according to the city’s government team, an investment of one million euros which has been funded by the municipality and the regional government’s ERDF program. The improvement program combines archaeological research, the reconstruction of walls and enhancement of the interior space. The site has been declared ‘of Cultural Interest’ so that it can "be visited, known and valued even more explained the Councillor for Heritage Pilar Gady. “There is a lot to do, to discover and improve, but we have taken a very important step so that Guardamar is placed at the forefront of historic tourism in the Southeast of Spain." The councillor and the Mayor, José Luis Sáez , visited the historical site to see how the programme was progressing and were pleased to see not only that it was underway but that a Visitor Information Centre has already been completed. The centre is a wooden clad prefabricated structure, which can be relocated if required. Its around 40 square metres in size and will house illuminated panels that will explain the history of the walled city. Its location is at the current entrance to the historic site coinciding with the layout of the north wall, in a strategic place to reduce the visual

impact of the drinking water tank that was installed on the site in the 60s. The interior platform of the enclosure has been covered in order to preserve the archaeological remains that have not yet been excavated and allow the public to view the area. In addition, a series of paths with prefabricated plates intended for the passage of visitors have been installed. Interior lighting systems have also been installed and the surveillance camera system reinforced. After the enhancement programme has been completed and once the guided tours of the walled city and Guardamar castle are launched the site will become more accessible and more understood by visitors. The new improvements have uncovered wall remains dating back to the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. The oldest is a medieval Christian construction of 2.30 meters wide and 1.5 meters high, of which there was hardly any information prior to its discovery. Another important finding is the lower part of the fortified bell tower of the old Renaissance church and of what was once the entrance to the walled city in the 18th century, next to which a moat is located. Researchers are trying to confirm whether a space located in the west wall is the entrance door used in the 13th century. In addition, Roman, Iberian, Phoenician, Greek, Islamic and early medieval ceramics have been found and are being studied.

14 year old arrested for stabbing A 14 year old child has been arrested for stabbing another child, aged 13, in Madrid. The victim was rushed to hospital with several stab wounds after the attack which sources close to the investigation could have been motivated by jealousy. The incident took place on Saturday evening at 9pm when the 14 year old girl

is alleged to have stabbed the younger child several times in different parts of the body. After the stabbing, the girl fled the scene and hid in a nearby home but several witnesses were able to tell the police of her whereabouts and they soon found the girl and the weapon believed to have been used in the alleged attack.

Red sky at night Anyone on social media will have noticed an abundance of ‘red sky at night’ photos being posted by local users here on the Costa Blanca. Why have we been seeing so many spectacular red skies in the Alicante province recently? Jorge Olcina, director of the Laboratory of Climatology of the University of Alicante, has the scientific

explanation. It is a meteorological phenomenon typical of the winter solstice and is due to the angle of the sun's rays at this time of year, and the fact that those rays are shining on the medium and high clouds that result in this type of sunsets. Whatever the reason, we think you’ll all agree. The skies at night this weekend have been rather spectacular.

A fair to remember

Age Concern hosted a Festive Fair on Tuesday 10th December at Domino Bar, Punta Prima and on behalf of Age Concern organisers would like to thank all the visitors who came and spent their money and the owners and staff of the bar for superb service and support. The Alpengold Oompah Band had everyone tapping their feet and the fantastic stallholders, without exception, delighted attendees with magnificent displays of their products. Organisers also wanted to thank the hardworking Age Concern volunteers who, cheerfully, sold hundreds of raffle tickets and to friends Carol, Mick, Dorothy and Don who patiently folded all the raffle tickets into the bucket for the draw. Fundraising is vital but it can also be a lot of fun and extremely satisfying as is being a volunteer. This Fair was a huge success and almost €460 was raised enabling Age Concern to maintain all the services and equipment which help the vulnerable in our area. Find out all about Age Concern by visiting the website www.ageconcerncostablancasur.org

GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP Sterling soared on the news that the Conservative Party had won a majority of over 75 seats in Parliament at yesterday’s General Election. Sterling added more than two euro cents as mostnow anticipate the Prime Minister will be able to achieve an orderly Brexit in a knowable time-frame. Investors also rewarded the pound for avoiding a hung Parliament and the continued uncertainty that it could bring, as could the possibility of another referendum or a cancellation of Brexit. The pound has now reached a threeyear high against the euro with the consensus being that Parliament will vote through the PM’s Brexit dealbefore the end of January. This would at least end the speculation over a second referendum or revoking of Article 50, howevermuch remains unclear about the nature of the UK’s departure from the EU. Investors are optimistic that the large Tory majority will allow the PM to achieve a gentler Brexit, ignoring the wishes of the ERG wing of the party, however this might include a potential extension to the transition period. Alternatively, he may take a more firm

approach and take the UK out of the EU at the end of 2020, with or without a trade agreement. There remains much to be seen going forward, however, for the UK economy and the pound.

EUR The euro experienced an unremarkable week, remaining unchanged against the other major currencies on average. Although it lost three and a fifth cents to sterling, it added three quarters of a US cent. European data this week was mixed, with German output data casting a negative outlook, while two surveys of investor sentiment revealed an upswing in optimism While it was a less eventful week than for the UK, the Eurozone saw the new President of the European Central Bank, Christine Lagarde hold her first press conference. Lagarde dismissed defining herself as hawkish or dovish, instead preferring to see herself as an "owl". In addition, she declined to offer guidance on monetary policy beyond observing that risks "remain tilted to the downside but have become somewhat less pronounced".

Busy Christmas season for Crescendo Crescendo International Choir had a busy Christmas season, performing a variety of popular, sacred and Christmas music at its two December concerts. Its first December concert was performed at Benijofar’s Catholic church, Iglesia Santiago Apostol, where almost €300 was raised to support the community’s food bank. Some of the music performed by the choir at the Benijofar concert included such popular melodies as Fix You by Cold

Play, Let it Be by the Beatles and Time to Say Goodbye. This last piece Is best known for its performance by well-known singers Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman. Sacred music sung included Make Me a Channel of Your Peace, An Irish Blessing and The Blessing of Aaron. Christmas music performed includingJingle Bell Rock, Campana Sobre Campana and White Christmas. Solos were also sung, with choir

accompaniment, including O Holy Night, performed by bass Bernard Cox and the Hawaiian Christmas song Mele Kalikimaka, performed by bass John Cloney. The music director for Crescendo’s choir is Irene Oliva and the pianist for both concerts was Cristian Martinez. Crescendo Choir’s second concert was held at Casa Contenta Tapas Bar and Restaurant in Rojales. This event was a 5euro donation fundraiser for the choir as

both its musical director and pianist are paid positions. Choir members are all volunteers who also pay annual dues to help offset choir costs. This concert was a combination of sacred and Christmas music, such as the popular melodies Little Drummer Boy and White Christmas. Tenor Jack van Dam performed a solo of You’ll Never Walk Alone from the American musical Carousel. Do you like singing? Crescendo

International Choir welcomes new members. We start rehearsing for our spring season at Casa Contenta, located in Rojales on Avenida Justo Quesada. The first rehearsal will take place Monday, January 13, 2020. Rehearsal times are from 5:30 to 8 pm on Mondays. Snow patrol With many people about to set off on a road trip taking them back to their homeland for the festive season, it is important to remember that during a long journey the weather conditions can change dramatically, and although it may be sunny and pleasant when you set off, it can quickly become cold, wintery, snowy conditions. The first thing to do for any journey is to plan. There are numerous websites to help with this, and smartphones apps are also a good choice. In Spain, the DGT not only has a website where the road conditions can be checked live, which you can access through dgt.es, they also have a mobile phone app which you can install for free, just search DGT in the app or play store. In particular snow can cause tremendous problems on the road network, before, during and after a snowfall. During your journey, if there is a risk that you will be driving in snow, you need to consider purchasing snow chains for your vehicle. Carrying snow chains is not a mandatory requirement, but in some areas, where snow covers the road, it becomes compulsory to use them, and so having them ready is advisable. The Guardia Civil, police or other authorities responsible for the road can impose a restriction without warning, placing signs on

the roads indicating that the use of snow chains is compulsory. If you don´t have these with you, then you will have to wait until the road has been cleared by a snowplough or until the restriction is lifted. Failure to adhere to the mandatory use is not only extremely dangerous, but you risk a fine too. If you see the warning

“cadenasobligatorias” you must stop driving if you don´t have snow chains on your vehicle. It might also be wise to take additional equipment with you, such as warm blankets, emergency food and drink, and always advise somebody of your journey and route, as mobile phone signals are not always as reliable as we might hope. Winter Driving Kit Cash: You never know when an unexpected expense will occur, especially in case of breakdown and, even if you have full insurance, there are always expenses. Jumper cables: Always useful to have in case you or someone else needs a jump start.

Small shovel: You never know when you might need to dig yourself out...and it´s better than having to use your hands. Sandbag: Useful to help you gain traction on ice and get your car back on the road. Even a simple bag of cat litter can do the job. Ice Scraper: Crucial for keeping the windows and lights clear of snow or ice. Remember not to create a “letterbox”, but to clear the full window screen. Torch: A torch is a must, particularly in winter. Warm clothing and footwear: In case you have to get out of the car. Food and water: Always sensible to carry something to eat and drink in case you’re stranded. Water is also useful to refill the antifreeze tank in case of emergency. Melting snow and slush can lead to dirty windows and lights, and it is crucial you keep these clear and clean at all times, even if it means stopping to clear them. Number plates must also be kept clear and clean. Remember too that if there is a risk of any unusual weather on your route it is likely to take you longer to reach your destination. If you have a ferry or train booked, it is a good idea to leave earlier than planned, allowing extra time for the journey, so as you don’t have to rush.

Are Your Savings Still In The UK? Many people who have moved to Spain do not want to bring all their savings and investments with them to this country. Spanish banks do not have a great track record and then there is currency question – Sterling or convert to Euros? One of the main problems with keeping your money in the UK, is a lack of adviser to keep an eye on your investments and switch funds when the need arises. Your UK financial adviser should not continue to work on your behalf if you are living as a Spanish tax resident. Another problem is that UK based savings like ISA’s, Premium Bonds and other NS&I products are not suitable for Spanish residents. As a Spanish tax resident there are a number or products offered by some of the worlds’ largest financial institutions specifically tailored to meet your investment needs. Indeed, one such provider, Prudential International, have a Spanish tax compliant savings bond that outperforms the UK equivalent simply because of the taxation treatment. Here at Seagate Wealth we understand that many ex‐pats do not wish to bring their money to Spain and for that reason we work with a number of product providers to ensure their money works as hard as possible with minimum risk. The Prudential savings bond offers clients a way to grow their money virtually tax‐free, with no need to report on their annual tax return or the Modelo 720. The other major benefit is the money is not held here in Spain, but in the Republic of Ireland. The Seagate team has a wealth of experience in providing advice on all aspects of savings and investment options. If you have an investment, but no adviser, we can help to get your portfolio back on track. For a free no‐obligation chat with a UK qualified adviser, call 965 704 338 or email: contact@seagatewealth.es

Most likely Xmas gifts to be returned A new study has found that one in nine shoppers will return Christmas gifts and swap them for something else after Christmas. It might be the thought that counts, but there's nothing more frustrating than having to return a gift you already have or one that you really don't need. Interested to find out the top returned Christmas gifts?

it's much more useful to purchase vouchers instead of games to avoid doubling up. Candles Perhaps one of the most popular gifts to give this season, candles were also found to be commonly returned. The study uncovered that this is down to personal scent preferences, with many not liking strong, sweetsmelling scents. Instead of

Shoes Coming in at the top of the list is shoes, as the study found that people are gifted styles they don't like. Another reason they get returned is because people aren't checking which size to buy beforehand. Kitchen appliances According to the study, kitchen appliances are also one of the top items to be returned. While toasters, kettles and coffee machines are of course incredibly practical, they are often returned at Christmas if it's something the receiver already has. Unlike other gifts, none of us have much use for two kettles. Video games When shopping for an avid video gamer purchasing a new game seems like a brilliant idea unless, of course, they already have it. According to the study,

buying candles this Christmas, scent diffusers were voted a far better option as people can choose which scents they want inside. Gym wear This is also commonly gifted to those that lead an active lifestyle. With sizing and style variations, many also return gym wear they receive at Christmas. Giving items such as hats or socks works better than clothing. DVDs While DVDs were once one of the most popular gifts to give,

they have now fallen out of popularity thanks to film streaming services such as Netflix. If you are keen to gift something practical to a film fanatic, vouchers are always a better idea. Toddler clothing Clothing for young toddlers is also one of the top items to be returned at Christmas, mainly down to people purchasing the wrong size. When buying gifts for babies or younger children, opt for items which aren't size dependent such as toys or books. Glassware It's always better to gift drinks instead of the glasses themselves, the study has found. Most people already have a large collection of glassware and probably don't have space for any more. When gifting something personal such as this, it's always best to ask them first. Makeup Makeup is a great choice for someone you know really well, but it can be a risky move for others. Items such as foundations and primers are often some which people return more than others, simply because the shades and ingredients inside might not be right for them.

Welcome to Calabria Calabria is a region in Southern Italy. It's considered the Caribbean of Europe thanks to its pristine beaches, stunning landscape, and rustic charms. Hillside towns, ancient Greek temples and Byzantine churches dot the countryside of Italy's best kept secret. The region's climate is mild in the winter, with hot, dry summers. The region is surrounded on three sides by the Mediterranean Sea: the Ionian Sea is to the east, the Tyhrrenean to the west and the Strait of Messina to the south. As such, the sea is a big part of the region's culture and cuisine. Calabria is subdivided into five provinces: Catanzaro, Cosenza, Crotone, Reggio di Calabria and Vibo Valentia. Calabria has historically been one of the poorest regions in Italy, although it is improving now. The region is quite undeveloped and under-visited by tourists but

is, therefore, also unspoiled. When you visit Calabria, spending a couple of days in Praia a Mare (known as Praja) is a great time. The off coast Dino Island is popular for its Grotta Azzurra (Blue Cave), where you can swim surrounded by fish in crystal blue water. EAT AND DRINK If there is a fundamental ingredient to Calabrese cooking, it would be the peperoncino. Calabrese cooking tends toward the spicy thanks to the generous use of various varieties of hot peppers in regional cuisine. In fact, so popular is the peperoncino, that the village of Diamante honors the hot pepper with its own festival. In the first week of September the locals celebrate the Festival del Peperoncino, dedicated to the unofficial symbol of Calabria -- the cayenne pepper. During the festival, one can taste freshly

harvested peppers or try locally-produced products that make use of the spicy condiment -- anything from pasta to (yes) gelato. Olio Santo, olive oil infused with hot pepper, is sometimes added to a plate of pasta to give it a little extra zip. Soppressata (Sopresatta) is a popular dried sausage typical of the region. Also, Alici ripieni, stuffed anchovies, is a popular seafood dish. Sardella is produced in some of the towns along the Ionian coast in the province of Cosenza. It is a spicy paste made with olive oil, mashed baby sardines and hot pepper. On the other hand, Calabria is an up-andcoming producer of wines, with a number of regional wines earning the Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) label from the Italian government, such as: Bivongi, Melissa or Savuto.

No Future I constantly worry about the future. I have not reached the point where I want to be, but then I never got the opportunities. I am 50 and always imagined I’d have a proper career by now, but life got in the way. I am in a job that pays ok but does not stretch me. I worry about everything, like losing members of my family, as we are all getting older. I have friends who drain me, and who I have come to the conclusion that I don’t really want to be with. There’s so much I wanted to do with my life, and I’ve not done anything. Job-wise I cannot make any changes, but I feel bored and unhappy. How can I lift this gloom? It’s possible you are suffering from a mid-life crisis. A summing up of your life, having regrets and not feeling inspired about what might lie ahead is quite normal. Why fret about an unpredictable future or rail against an unchangeable past? If you feel you cannot change your work, then why not use your time outside of work to pursue enjoyment? Most of us have to go to work, and most of us may not like our jobs; in fact if you ask other people your age, you might find they have similar feelings. Time to make some changes. Try to find something in your spare time that you can throw yourself into –make it something that involves others, something that you can enjoy and will bring you satisfaction. If you can, stop doing things that make you unhappy, and cut ties with the people who you say ‘drain you’. Street seller hero saves man from house fire Gorgui Lamine Sow, 20, was selling his bracelets and necklaces on the streets of Dénia, last Friday. It was a national holiday marking the start of a long weekend to observe the 41st anniversary of the Spanish Constitution, and the city was filling up with visitors. It was just past 11.30am when Lamine, an undocumented migrant from Senegal, heard screams not far from where he was standing with his girlfriend and their baby. He turned toward the sound and saw black smoke coming out of a two-story home on a street running at right angles to the shoreline. Without hesitating, Lamine ran towards the building and started climbing. “I didn’t think about anything. I just heard screams and ran to help,” he told Spanish national news papers whilst sitting next to the man he saved, Álex Caudeli Webster, who was recovering from a stroke and sitting in a wheelchair, unable to escape the blaze. “He saved my life. He climbed the wall and tore down the blind that was on fire. When I tried to go out on the balcony with my walker, the blind hit me on the nose and ear, and look what it did to me,” said Caudeli, showing the bandages on his face. “He grabbed me like I was a sack of rice, and he really took the strain, because besides not being able to walk, I have a problem in my legs, I suffer from vertigo, and I couldn’t hold still,” explained Caudeli, 39, with his dog Luky at his side. Lamine was wearing a Superman tshirt that Caudeli gave him following his

Gorgui Lamine Sow with Alex Claudelia Webster

act of bravery. “Isn’t it cool?,” said Caudeli. Tall, strong and with a permanent smile on his face, the Senegalese street vendor shrugged when he was asked whether he feels like a hero. “I did it without thinking,” he said. “A hero? I don’t know. He is a good person,” added his partner, Gana Gadiaga, also from Senegal, who was carrying their seven-month-old baby Ndeye on her back. Gorgui and Gana met a couple of years ago in Madrid, and when they had the baby they decided to move to a different city. “There were a lot of people living in that apartment. It was not healthy for the baby. They don’t have a room here either, but there are fewer people,” noted Serigne, Gorgui’s older brother.

The whole family lives in nearby Gandia, and travels often to Dénia to sell their crafts. The residents of Port street also moved fast when the fire broke out. Caudeli says that his dog pulled off the blanket that was covering him and dragged it over the heater, which may have triggered the flames. Mystery man A neighbour named Roberta showed up with a fire extinguisher, while someone else brought a ladder to help Lamine and Caudeli get off the balcony safely. But everyone points at Lamine as the real hero of the day. As soon as he was back on the ground, he simply walked away without expecting

anything in return. He had to get back to his family. For the entire weekend, there was much speculation as to his identity. Last Monday, local authorities in Dénia announced that they wanted to decorate the mysterious hero. Finally, a local reporter working for Levante EMV found him, and the city of Dénia has asked the central government to give him residency and work papers (his partner and child already have longterm residency permits). The government delegate’s office in the Valencia region is currently analysing the request, and if it meets the legal requirements for extraordinary cases such as this one, Lamine will be granted papers.

The case inevitably brings up memories of Mamoudou Gassama, an immigrant from Mali who climbed an apartment building in Paris to save a child who was hanging from a balcony. Gassama received French citizenship and fulfilled his dream of becoming a fire-fighter. Lamine said that he would ideally like to be a truck driver, but that any job will do. He hopes that all the publicity will help improve his family’s situation. He left Senegal over three years ago – “There is no work there, things are really bad,” he explained – and lived in Ecuador, Brazil and Argentina before coming to Spain. “We want to stay,” he said, picking up his goods before setting off for Gandia again. “It’s nice here.”

Europeans boost property sales in Spain A change in direction has taken place in the purchase and sale of properties by foreigners. Although at the beginning of the year extra-EU nationalities began to gain ground, with Moroccans, Romanians and Chinese at the forefront, it is now the Europeans who are once again gaining weight in the Spanish property market. According to data from Registrars, in the third quarter of 2019 the main foreign buyers of properties in Spain were the British, French, Germans and Belgians. In contrast, at the start of the year, Moroccans were the fourth most prominent nationality, while the Belgians were in sixth position (behind Romanians). With the exception of the Germans, who continue to lose ground, the British and French are gaining momentum. In the case of UK buyers, the most noteworthy is that they have left behind the historic low of the second quarter, when they accounted for 13.3% of sales made by foreigners. Their current weight has risen to 14.27%, a

record of the year, although still far from the almost 38% they managed to represent in 2008. On the other hand, the French account for 8.38% of transactions

carried out by foreigners, reaching highs since 2017. The Belgians, on the other hand, once again account for 6% of all transactions, as has become customary since the economic crisis hit bottom. Meanwhile, in the case of the Italians, their market share remains stable at around 5% (in the third quarter it stood at 5.03%), in line with the last three financial years. Germany, on the other hand, is in a different situation. The European locomotive accounted for 6.6% of operations in the summer, the lowest figure since 2008. Even so, it is the third most prominent nationality in the

purchase and sale of properties by foreigners in Spain. Romania is the other European country that is losing ground and is doing so after reaching historic highs: at the beginning of the year it accounted for 6.12% of operations, however, at the end of September it was falling back to 5.83%. If the year ended at this level, Romanians would sign their second best year in terms of buying and selling properties since 2006, when they represented 5.98% of the market. China is another of the nationalities that is moving away from its record. Whereas in the first quarter they accounted for 4.49% of purchases, now they have fallen to 3.57%. This is the lowest figure since 2013, at the worst time of the Spanish economic and real estate crisis. Moroccans follow a similar evolution. At the start of the year they were close to the pre-crisis peaks (they exceeded 7% in 2006), whereas in summer they lost ground to stay at 6.05%. As a consequence, they have fallen one place in the ranking in just half a year.

Jack Frost

Christmas movies

Saturday 21 December, ITV2 –15.30 pm Jack Frost is a singer who's on the road most of the time so he can't spend a lot of time with his son Charlie, although they love each other very much. When Jack dies in a car accident, Charlie becomes a very sad young man, until... Jack returns as a snowman! Now they can do all the things they've missed when Jack was human, but what will people think when they see Charlie talking to a snowman and what will happen when the weather gets warmer?

Elf Sunday 22 December, ITV2 – 6.10 pm Buddy was a baby in an orphanage who stowed away in Santa's sack and ended up at the North Pole. Later, as an adult human who happened to be raised by elves, Santa allows him to go to New York City to find his birth father, Walter Hobbs. Hobbs, on Santa's naughty list for being a heartless jerk, had no idea that Buddy was even born. Buddy, meanwhile, experiences the delights of New York City (and human culture) as only an elf can. When Walter's relationship with Buddy interferes with his job, he is forced to reevaluate his priorities.

Santa Claus – The Movie Tuesday 24 December, ITV – 15.40 pm This is the story of a master toymaker who discovers a magical kingdom of elves in the North Pole and becomes Santa Claus. But when Santa's eager-to-please elf Patch leaves the North Pole for the big streets of New York City, he becomes mixed up with a dastardly toy tycoon's plans to take over Christmas. And so begins Santa's adventure - to rescue his faithful elf and to save Christmas for all the children of the world!

Euroguard leads the way Once again Euroguard is leading the replacement door and window market with the launch of its unique Yale approved range of composite doors. Euroguard is the only business in Spain that is endorsed by Yale and is licensed to sell these products. According to official crime statistics, 67 percent of burglars break in through the door, so that’s why these doors only use the very best quality multi-point locking systems to keep your home and family fully protected. These doors are manufactured with a reinforced door frame and secured with a multi-point lock with two hooks, two finger bolts and a deadbolt. Premium adjustable hinges and keeps meet the highest standards and legislation. Customers can feel completely confident because these composite doors are manufactured in accordance to the Secured by Design standard, a Police-backed accreditation. Secured by Design is the official UK police awarded to companies producing security products that pass standards

and tests nominated by the police service. The standards and related tests must demonstrate the product effectiveness in preventing or reducing crime, usually by resistance to physical attack. In fact Yale and Euroguard are so convinced by these doors that they are willing to put their money where their mouth is and offer up to 1,000 euros excess home insurance in the unlikely event of a break through one of these front doors. If a Yale component fails the customer will received up to 1,000 euros for repairs or replacements and if a break-in is the result of the failure of a Yale component the company will pay 1,000 euros in compensation as compensation for the distress caused. These doors are available from Euroguard in a wide-range of contemporary and traditional styles, colours and in both glazed and solid designs. Company owner Mat Whiteman said: “This new range epitomises Euroguard’s commitment to product quality and

customer service. The company has made some considerable improvements as it has evolved such as ISO accreditation, staff training and qualifications and product focus – all of which has been achieved to enable us to put our customers at the heart of the business and provide the best products and service.” Longevity Euroguard is a second-generation, family run business which has been established for 18 years in the Southern Costa Blanca. The business has grown from humble beginnings on Playa Flamenca market to a regional market leader. Current MD Mat Whiteman worked alongside his father since the early days before taking over the reins a few years ago and evolving the company to embrace the latest practises and procedures. Mat, ably supported by his wife Linda who heads administration and personnel, has focused the business on three core foundations: customer focus,

product quality and engineering, staff expertise including technical and safety training. Linda has concentrated on ensuring the team has the multi-skill sets needed to provide the customer with a professional and comprehensive service from quotation to completion, whilst Matt has centred on the more technical aspects. Mat said: “Being 100 percent legal in every aspect and facet of the business as well as meeting all of the quality and safety standards and requirements has been a key focus to ensure that Euroguard continues to lead the way. “Our customers are now truly the spearhead of the business. We have a comprehensive customer feedback procedure and never walk away from customer issues but work with customers to ensure they are address and resolved satisfactorily.” All of the above has been completed as investment in the future, as Matt and Linda are keen to see the business through the coming decades. To this end Euroguard is increasing its local

presence adding to its base at Zocco Market and its headquarters in Benijofar with a new purpose built showcase at Lemon Tree Market due to open in 2020. Quality, safety and security In addition, to the new range of Yale composite doors, Euroguard continues to supply high-quality UPVC windows, doors, glass curtains, infills and conservatories all of which are secure and weather proof. All Euroguard products are manufactured to a tropical profile, which means there are all specifically designed for the Spanish weather. These products will not leak or stress in high winds or torrential rain. Nor will they warp or expire in intense heat or ultra-violet rays. Euroguard prides itself on using the correct products for the correct applications. For further information contact Euroguard on 965 999 396 or 602 620 547 or visit: www.euroguard-spain.com

Tiredness and muscle fatigue are the main risk factors in skiing Most injuries incurred while skiing happen at the end of the day, a time at which tiredness causes the skier’s attention to diminish, and he or she presents greater muscle fatigue, states Doctor Fernando Jordá, a Specialist in the Quirónsalud Traumatology Units in Alicante and Torrevieja. Most of these injuries are sprains in the joints, and depend on the discipline; when practicing alpine skiing, sprains usually occur in the knees, due to sudden turns, while snowboarding injuries are more often seen in the wrists and forearms. Doctor Jordá warns of the need to diagnose this type of injury as soon as possible, particularly in the case of the knees. “The reason is the effusion that is always

produced in the knee after this type of injury, which makes the correct diagnosis of the lesion more difficult,” explains the traumatologist. After any type of fall, the specialist recommends “performing a selfexploration of the parts that hurt the most. If after this check-up, we feel fine and can continue on our way by our own means, we should go to the ski slope medical services immediately for an assessment, since many injuries do not present symptoms right away, and it is only afterwards when difficulties start to appear. If the situation is severe, we should not move, and wait for the ski services to transport us, so we do not make any injury worse.” Tips to avoid Skiing Injuries Doctor Fernando Jordá recommends

taking the following steps into account if we are planning on skiing during the holidays: • Training for a few weeks beforehand, in order to strengthen the muscles we use the most in this sport, practicing, for example, cycling, aerobic exercise or swimming. • Warming up before starting, and stretching at the end of the ski day. • Learning the technique well, always advised by monitors and professionals before heading onto the slopes. • Not skiing in adverse weather conditions or on unmarked terrain. • Checking the bindings and adjusting them to your weight and skill level, so if you do fall, the skis will detach, and you can avoid fractures and ligament injuries. • Do not drink alcohol, so your reflexes are not slowed, and you prevent the dehydration that alcoholic beverages

cause. • Stop after a determined time period to relax your muscles and joints. • Always wear a certified helmet to avoid head injuries. Specialists in the Arthroscopic Treatment of Knee Injuries The Knee Units at Quirónsalud Alicante and Torrevieja, headed by Doctor Fernando Jordá, are specialised in the treatment of bone and joint issues of the knee caused by sports injuries, using advanced, minimally invasive techniques. Thanks to these techniques, they are able to treat, with great success, any type of joint injury, and achieve a quick recovery, so the patient can quickly return to his or her usual routines. The techniques used include the treatment of cartilage

pathologies with radiofrequency, meniscectomy using arthroscopy, regenerative therapy using plateletrich plasma, and knee arthroscopy. Quirónsalud Alicante Traumatology Unit, a Highly Qualified Team Quirónsalud Alicante brings together professionals with the highest qualifications, and an accumulated experience of over twenty years, which allows it to offer patients the best professional and technological treatment. It has units specialising in the knee and lower limbs, with over ten thousand surgical interventions performed; upper limbs, with over fifteen thousand; and spine, with over nine thousand surgical interventions. This guarantees the quality standards and circuits of its healthcare.

Corrie return for I’m a Celeb’s Andy Whyment Andy Whyment has spoken out on his return to Coronation Street after making it to the final of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! The Kirk Sutherland actor missed out on the title of Jungle King after Jacqueline Jossa was crowned the winner of the show on jam-the recent winning over hearts during his time in the jungle. Andy said: “Coronation Street has been loyal to me and I am loyal to them. I’m looking forward to going back and doing my real job. As long as Coronation Street

We’ve got filming this week. We break up on the 20th for two weeks. I’m looking forward to getting back and just getting into my normal boring life of just sitting on the sofa, getting home from work, closing the front door and watching telly. “Corrie’s on series link, yeah, so I’ll be

catching up on Corrie. I always do.” The father-of-two also revealed how he can’t wait to get back to his “normal and boring” life after weeks in the jungle. There’s Kirk!’ But, to get people saying, ‘There’s Andy,’ it’s just gonna feel amazing to know that people have got being Andy Whyment rather than Kirk it feels amazing and I just wanna say thank you so much for everyone that’s voted for me.” The soap star, who had an emotional ITV series, with as his hilarious reactions to reunion with his wife and kids after the trials and stories in the camp won fans over jungle, was one of the favourites to win the on Twitter.

December fruits and vegetables It has been shown that eating fruits and vegetables when they are in season is better all round for our health, our pockets and for the environment. One of the biggest advantages of eating produce which is in season locally is that production is much more ecological: transport costs are lower, local businesses and the local workforce benefit, boosting the local economy, and because the produce is at its optimum ripeness, it is tastier too. In December, the first month of the winter season, there are not a lot of fruits in season, but the choice of vegetables is plentiful. Avocados, kakis (persimmon), kiwis and grapefruits are some of the fruits that are at their best this month. Avocados are full of hearthealthy, unsaturated fat and numerous beneficial nutrients like vitamins E, C and A and minerals like calcium and potassium. Persimmons are rich and sweet and full of betacarotene and vitamin C, two powerful natural antioxidants that prevent premature ageing. Kiwis are well known for their natural laxative properties and are also rich in vitamin C and omega 3, one of the most

beneficial oils for our bodies. Like other citric fruits, grapefruits are rich in vitamin C, but also contain other beneficial nutrients like folic acid and vitamin A. Lemons are also in abundance at this time of year and are one of the most useful fruits thanks to the large number of phytochemical compounds they contain. They can be used as an antioxidant, an astringent, an antacid... Mandarins are also widely available in December. Despite being part of the citrus family, they contain less vitamin C than other citric fruits, but compensate by having not insignificant levels of calcium, folic acid, betacarotene and a sweet flavour that kids love. On the vegetable front, there are plenty to choose from and many supermarkets now actively promote locally-sourced produce. Chard is a relatively flavourless vegetable, but one which has incredible nutritonal value, being rich in folic acid and vitamins C, A, E and B. By stark contrast, strong-flavoured garlic not only adds a delicious touch to many dishes, it also has valuable infection-fighting properties. Artichokes are rich in

fibre, minerals and B vitamins and have purifying properties which are particularly beneficial to the liver. Celery is an excellent diuretic and can also help eliminate fat. Sweet potatoes have the same number of calories as regular potatoes, but are infinitely richer in nutrients, especially vitamins A (which is good for the skin), C, B6, B5, B1 and B2. Broccoli has many benefits, from protecting the digestive tract to preventing certain bacterial infections. It is a good source of B vitamins, minerals, and vitamins A and C, which makes it an excellent antioxidant. Brussels sprouts are the classic winter vegetable, rich in vitamin C, fibre, iron, calcium and iodine, which keeps the thyroid gland functioning properly. Cauliflower is a magnificent source of vitamin C and fibre, and can also help with constipation. Spinach has one of the highest levels of folic acid of all vegetables, indispensable during pregnancy. It also contains high levels of iron, and vitamins A & C. Leeks are purifying, rich in vitamins, potassium and folates, and help strengthen the immune system.

Best hangover foods to ease your pain First, the bad news: There is no cure for a hangover (sorry). Excessive drinking prompts a few (bad) things to happen to your body. First, when your body metabolises the alcohol, it causes a by-product of toxins to build up. Too much booze can also trigger an inflammatory response, as well as irritate the stomach lining and lead to dehydration. Cue symptoms like headaches, nausea, fatigue, dizziness and excessive thirst. Fortunately, in most cases, hangovers will go away on their own in about 24 hours, but you may feel better sooner by consuming the right foods and drink... Avocados Alcohol puts a strain on the liver. But happily, our favourite toast topper contains certain compounds that can help protect against liver damage. Avocados are also high in potassium, a mineral that’s lost during a drinking binge. Ginger After a bout of heavy drinking, you may be feeling a little (OK, a lot) queasy. Reach for ginger, which is an effective natural remedy for nausea and can help settle stomach issues caused by a hangover. And thanks to certain medicinal compounds found in ginger, it may also help treat and prevent other digestive issues like vomiting.

Tomato juice Tomatoes could help ease hangover symptoms thanks to certain compounds (namely naringenin and lycopene) that have been shown to protect against liver damage. And one study from Cornell University found that tomato juice can speed up the rate at which enzymes process alcohol. Eggs Both oxidative stress and inflammatory responses contribute to the physiology that occurs when we experience hangovers from drinking too much alcohol. Selenium is a powerful mineral that is essential for a healthy metabolism while protecting your body from oxidative stress. And eggs are especially high in this important nutrient. Brazil nuts Remember what Metsovas said about excessive drinking causing inflammation? One of the most important components of antiinflammation comes from minerals found in whole, unprocessed foods. These nuts not only pack an antiinflammatory punch; they’re also high in selenium. Cucumber Cucumbers are full of water and electrolytes to help you rehydrate better than water alone after a night of drinking. The light, fresh flavour is also easy to tolerate if

you're feeling a bit nauseous. Water Stay hydrated. Alcohol is a diuretic, so it can dehydrate you and make you urinate more. Opt for low calorie, low sugar drinks like plain water, sparkling water, cold water or hot water. Experts recommend coconut water, which is loaded with electrolytes that you may be lacking after a night of heavy drinking. While caffeine is a diuretic, it can help take the edge off of a hangover headache. Just make sure that coffee isn’t your only source of fluids. Salmon Excessive alcohol intake can deplete the body of B-complex vitamins and increase compounds that cause inflammation. Eating salmon may help counter these effects since this fatty fish is rich in vitamins B6 and B12, as well as omega-3 fatty acids that help to lower inflammation. Bananas Bananas are a great source of potassium and can help replete your body’s electrolytes to get you back to feeling your best in no time. They’re also high in fibre and slow-digesting carbohydrates to stabilise blood sugar levels, which may help alleviate hangover symptoms caused by low blood sugar such as headaches and fatigue.

When to eat dinner to boost heart health According to new research presented at the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions, eating late at night on a regular basis could up your risk of heart disease. Consuming the bulk of your day’s calories in the evening messes with your circadian rhythms and this can throw your metabolic system out of whack and cause damage to your heart. Instead, aim to eat a bigger lunch and a lighter dinner, so you get more calories in the afternoon instead of at night. After a busy day at work, it’s only natural to want to unwind by hitting the gym or going for a run. And by the time you actually sit down for dinner, it might already be after 8pm and of course the tradition in Spain is to eat the main meal of the day quiet late, with many Spanish not dining until 9pm or even later. Unfortunately, those late-evening meals may be raising your risk of cardiovascular disease, preliminary research suggests. Presenting recently at the American Heart Association’s (AHA) Scientific Sessions meeting, researchers noted that women who consumed a higher proportion of their calories after 6pm were more likely to have cardiovascular disease risks than

women who ate earlier. Every 1 percent increase in night-time calories consumed after 8pm boosted the likelihood of higher blood pressure, less long-term control of blood sugar, and higher body mass index which all contribute to heart risks, according to lead researcher Nour Markarem, Ph.D., postdoctoral research fellow at Columbia University’s Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons.

Researchers looked at 112 women - with an average age of 33 - and examined lifestyle factors such as smoking, physical activity, type of food eaten, as well as health markers such as cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugar. Study participants kept electronic food diaries to track what they ate for one week both at the start and at the finish

of the one-year research period. “What we found is that when we eat may be just as important as what we eat and how much we eat,” Makarem said. Our bodies aren’t designed to consume a greater proportion of our calories in the evening, she added. When we load up at night, the “clocks” in our organs become misaligned with the master clock in the brain. That creates a state of metabolic dysfunction - a disruption in your body’s process to get or make energy from the foods you consume - said Makarem, and that’s what may predispose you to heart disease. What if you work late, tend to dine in the evenings, or simply don’t feel like having dinner at 5pm? The researchers aren’t suggesting skipping food altogether once the sun goes down - in fact, most of the study participants in the recent research ate some food after 6pm. It’s the amount of calories you need to watch. The better strategy, according to Makarem, is to get the majority of your calories earlier in the day and opt for a light, easilydigestible dinner of whole foods. That way, you can still eat without throwing off your circadian rhythms.

Sleeping nine hours a night 'may raise risk of stroke' Too much sleep may raise the risk of stroke, research suggests. Scientists from Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan, China, asked more than 31,000 people how much shut eye they got a day. Perhaps surprisingly, those who slept for more

than nine hours were nearly a quarter (23 percent) more likely to suffer a stroke over the next six years. When napping was added to the mix, the risk went up to 85 percent, the results show. The Sleep Council recommends adults get between seven and nine

hours of shut eye a night. During this time, the body replenishes its energy stores and repairs any damage, while the mind organises and stores memories from the day before. Too much sleep, however, has been linked to weight gain, diabetes and even a premature death. To learn more about how slumbering affects our health, the scientists looked at thousands of healthy adults, with an average age of 62. The participants were asked about their sleep and napping habits. A midday nap is reportedly common in China, with 8 percent of those in the study nodding off for more than an hour-and-a-half a day. Nearly a quarter (24 percent) claimed to get at least nine hours kip a night. Compared to those who got less, these individuals were significantly more likely to suffer a stroke down the line. The risk was higher still when a long night’s sleep was combined with a lengthy nap, results - published in the journal Neurology - show. Napping for 90 minutes alone increased the odds of a stroke by 25 percent compared to a kip of half-an-hour or less. When it came to sleep quality, those who rated it as poor were up to 56 percent more likely to suffer a stroke than those who slumbered well. Kipping for more than nine hours a night, but poorly, raised the risk by 82 percent.

Best walking workouts It’s easy to take walking for granted as a form of exercise. After all, it’s how we move around in the world every day, so it can be hard to believe it’ll knock off pounds. However, research shows that walking is a surprisingly strong health and fitness strategy. It matters how you walk, though. A study in Journal of Applied Physiology found that walking quickly with hand and ankle weights was comparable to slow running. And research from the University of Virginia revealed that mixing short, fast walks with longer, more leisurely ones was an effective way for obese women to lose belly fat. Walking can even help prevent disease. A study in the journal Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology showed that walking at a decent pace reduced participants’ risk of developing high blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels as much as running. It’s clear that our bodies were made to walk, but there’s more than one way to get the most out of those daily steps. Below are three different approaches so you can choose the right method for you. Whether you’re time-pressed, want to loses weight or want to ease into running walking could be the answer you’ve been looking for... Even the fittest people can benefit from walking more. From a purely physiological standpoint, walking raises your heart rate and burns calories. But it’s also a great way to increase your mindbody connection, focus on your breath, spend time in nature and de-stress. For beginners, it’s all about working up to 10,000 steps a day, say experts. That’s

the preset daily goal on most fitness trackers because it’s considered a good target for heart health and weight maintenance. But after you’ve mastered that, challenge yourself to hit 15,000 to 25,000 daily steps. To amp up the intensity of your walks, try a hilly landscape or wear two- to three-pound ankle and hand weights. You can also incorporate some toning exercises every few minutes, like jumping jacks, walking lunges, squats, or squat jumps. Adding these moves in intervals will help you build muscle, improve heart health, and increase endurance. Doctors believe that walking is one of the best tools for weight maintenance. It’s aerobic, it engages some of the biggest muscles, and it’s feasible for most people. To maintain a healthy weight try walking for at least 30 minutes five days a week. Some good news: You don’t have to log a half hour all at once. You can do your 30 minutes in 10-minute bouts

throughout the day. Plus, when you walk for shorter periods, you can generally go at a faster speed, which may be even better for you than walking slowly for 30 minutes straight, since more vigorous activities can help increase your overall fitness level. And even lower-intensity exercises like fast-paced walking can help burn some of the body’s stored fat. Walking in chunks can give you little boosts of confidence to keep you motivated, too. Whether it’s parking farther away or walking to meet a colleague, you get a sense of accomplishment. It’s these little successes that end up establishing good habits. Adding running intervals to your walks can help you burn more calories, and running has been shown to boost appetite-suppressing hormones. Plus, easing into running like this allows you to go farther while feeling better and avoiding injury. To introduce faster segments into your

walks, start by jogging for 5 to 10 seconds per minute for 10 minutes, gradually working your way up to 30 minutes. Once you’ve conquered that goal, begin adding longer periods of jogging until you can jog for 30 seconds per minute for 30 minutes. Eventually, you can build up to shorter walk breaks—for example, walking for 30 seconds and running for

60. This is an excellent way to train for a 5K or even longer race. For regular runners looking to add in strategic walking breaks, try alternating 90 seconds of running and 30 seconds of walking if you run a 10-minute mile on average. If you average a 12-minute mile, try alternating 60 seconds of running and 30 seconds of walking.

Say NO to Alcohol or Drugs Last week, the Guardia Civil, assisted by the local, regional and National Police, were carrying out an extensive surveillance campaign looking for drivers who had consumed alcohol or drugs before driving, and as the season continues, so do the campaigns. Spain does have a prescribed limit, which is less than other countries, including the UK for example, but the only safe limit for either alcohol or drugs before driving is zero. There have been numerous hardhitting campaigns over the years which try to raise awareness of the dangers of alcohol and drugs, and although many people do acknowledge and observe the dangers, there are still those who choose to risk their own lives, and the lives of others, by drinking, or consuming drugs, or both, before driving. It is worth noting also that the roadside breathalyser in Spain is used in evidence, and so if you fail at the roadside you face the immediate consequences. Sanctions: If you fail a breathalyser test and the

result shows a rate of more than 0.25 mg / l but is less than 0.50 mg / l, the driver faces a penalty of 500 euro and loss of 4 points. If the breathalyser test result shows a rate of more than 0.50 mg / l, the driver faces a penalty of 1,000 euro and a loss of 6 points.

Repeat offenders face a penalty of 1,000 euro and the loss of between 4 or 6 points, depending on the rate given. If there is a drug present, the penalty for the driver is 1,000 euro and the loss of 6 points. Penalties:

The Criminal Code typifies crimes against road safety and establishes the following penalties for driving with excess alcohol or under the influence of drugs. Alcohol: Rates higher than 0.60 mg / l in air and rates higher than 1.2 gr / l in blood - Prison for three to six months or a fine of six to twelve months or community service for 30 to 90 days, and deprivation of the right to drive for one to four years. Refusal to submit to the test Prison from six months to one year and deprivation of the right to drive from one to four years. Drugs: Driving under the influence of toxic drugs, narcotics or psychotropic substances - Prison for three to six months or a fine of six to twelve months or work for the benefit of the community for 30 to 90 days, and deprivation of the right to drive for one to four years. Refusal to submit to the test - Prison from six months to one year and deprivation of the right to drive from one to four years.

TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

I warn you now, we might get through a whole column without VAR being mentioned. Other than me mentioning it there, I mean. I might be wrong, but I don’t think VAR really got involved this weekend - and if I am wrong, I’ve just been outed as someone who doesn’t really watch the games anyway (I do, honest. Glued to them. Even Burnley. And Newcastle). King of the Klopp seemed a little grumpy after Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Watford, didn’t he? Jurgeylad had a good old moan about the alleged plans to expand the Champions League group stage, meaning potentially more football matches for tired legs in years to come. And then we went all in on the plans to play all of the FIFA Club World Cup on just the one pitch, meaning potentially a rubbish surface for tired legs in the next ten days. You don’t have to be a genius to work out which is the more pressing concern. Liverpool got the job done against Nigel Pearson’s men in a way they have fashioned on many occasions this season already. Two passes and Mo Salah is 1v1 and a goal is scored. Just don’t call Liverpool a long-ball team, though. Firstly, their fans get the right hump when you point out to them that they do actually go from back-to-front rather rapidly (and who can blame them with that front

three?). And secondly, does it really matter? You are allowed to win football matches by playing a little more direct. Salah notched the second late-on thanks to a visionary assist from Divock Origi. So the Reds march on and their nearest rivals, Leicester, stumbled at home to Norwich. And we all know why, don’t we? James Morrison named him ‘Scrooge’ but whoever decided Jamie Vardy’s header should go down as a Tim Krul OG cost the Foxes’ three big ones. After all, if Vardy scores, Leicester win. It had happened eight times in a row before this match so you can’t tell me it wouldn’t have happened again. One of the most confusing things about Tottenham’s Christian Eriksen is not his belief that Real Madrid might try and sign him up one day. No, for me it was his utter inability to beat the first man at a corner. Of course, Eriksen is perfectly capable of beating the first man at the dead-ball - he is technically gifted. Yet, he never seemed to - Spurs probably scored from a near-post header once and they’ve tried to replicate it five times a match ever since. Jose’s clearly having none of that though. He’s been there less at a month, and Eriksen is firing in corners to the far post and Jan is heading them home. Still no clean sheet for Mourinho though, as the Tottenham defence backed off so much they were sitting with the fans as Adama Traore fizzed the equaliser home. His goal wasn’t as

good as Lucas Moura’s though - there have been some rather tasty goals in the Mourinho era already. West Ham players, bizarrely, look like

will have only developed that thoughtprocess and, no doubt, Wilf Zaha’s ears will be burning. Eddie Howe and Bournemouth

they do actually want to keep Mauricio Pellegrini in a job - mind you when David Moyes is again being touted as the firefighter until the end-of-theseason you can understand why. They cobbled together enough of a performance to see off Southampton 10 at St Mary’s - and it looked like Southampton had a great chance of winning after Danny Ings’ goal was disallowed. Ings has scored nine Premier League goals this season and not been on the winning team with any of them - he is the literal opposite to Jamie Vardy, nearly. Is it a coincidence that Frank Lampard’s Chelsea’s transfer ban gets lifted and Chelsea forget how to win in the Premier League? Their players seem to have frozen, especially since Lampard suggested that he wouldn’t mind bringing in an attacking face or two to try and replace Eden Hazard. Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Bournemouth

needed that win after five successive defeats. I mean, how is Howe going to keep getting linked to the big jobs if the Cherries keep losing? Is the Arsenal gig still a big job? Well, yes - big in terms of size of task I grant you but big in terms of prestige? Not so much in this day and age - and Freddie Ljungberg would do well to run a mile from it once the first nine candidates say “thanks, but no thanks”. Arsenal are, frankly, awful - City barely had to get out of first gear to beat them 3-0, Kevin de Bruyne putting the game to bed pretty early on. Saed Kolasinac not as brave when a ball is going near his head than he is when looking out for Mesut Ozil, eh? If Sheffield United keep moving up the table I’m going to have to consider moving them up this column. On Saturday night, the Blades were sitting in 5th place. 5th! With a manager who has managed in non-league and a lot of

Ruby’s Golf Society Elche CF couldn’t End of season keep the Las Palmas roundup 2019 Canaries Caged Our year ended with a game at Las Colinas, the top 2 players, Tim Goldsmith and Jim McCarthy were to battle it out on this very difficult course for our player of the year title, two other players in the top four ball Michelle Evans and Nigel Wright also had a shot at the title although they would have to play out of their skins to overhaul the top two. We had an early tee (8-30) and disappointingly all the greens were covered in a heavy dew something that we felt should have been addressed by the green staff. After the front nine Tim was looking favorite but Jim fought back on the last few holes to make the points tally for the year equal. It had been decided that if this happened the highest score on the day would take the honors, and that person turned out to be Jim McCarthy. Other results on the day were, nearest the pin on the par three's was George Marshall Deane, Michelle Evans(2) and Theresa Wright. Best front nine David

Wright and best back Michelle Evans. Silver division winner was Dave Shelton and Gold and overall winner was Jeff Evans. The two's pot was shared between Bill Martin and Theresa Wright and Michelle won the football card. The following evening 45 members and their wives attended our Christmas dinner at Stan and Ollies restaurant which once again was excellent and where the presentation of the player of the year trophy was presented. Firstly out going captain George Marshall Deane and his wife Pat received gifts thanking them for their efforts throughout the year, Tim Goldsmith was presented with the runners up trophy and Jim McCarthy took the player of the year trophy, although it was a bit difficult for the new captain as there was nine Jim McCarthy's, see photo. A great finish to a great year and in January we start all over again. If any one requires any information or wishes to play with us please email rubysgolf@yahoo.co.uk

Elche CF v Las Palmas, Sunday 15th December, kick off 18:00, attendance 10,772 The fixture had ‘tough match’ written all over it as both teams started the weekend on equal points. The last minute announcement that Pacheta was forced to leave not only Nino, but also Iván Sánchez out of the squad, left the franjiverde fans fearing the worst. It turns out that they were right to do so. The opening minutes looked promising for the home side. That quickly changed as the islanders found their stride. Las Palmas dominated possession, confidently passing and testing the Elche defence on several occasions. A penalty decision in favour of Elche resulted in the first goal of the game by Fidel #16 on the 23 minute mark. This lifted the home team, giving them some fighting spirit which resulted in a well worked goal from the opposite winger Josan #17. The visitors were not so easily deterred and continued their sharp play and their testing of Elche. The first half finished 2-0, a scoreline which did not reflect play and allowed Elche to spend the break in a play off position. The teams returned to the pitch with different objectives. Las Palmas were on fire and Elche CF decided to smother their fire, rather than fight it with fire of their own. This approach

proved fatal. For the first 10 minutes the visitors had 100% possession, so it was no surprise that Las Palmas found the back of the net on the 61st minute. What was a surprise was that just 4 minutes later, Elche’s Juan Cruz #23 also found the back of the Elche net to bring the scoreline to 2-2. Las Palmas continued to fire and although the Ref did not see their 3rd goal, both the linesman and VAR did. During the final minutes Elche pressed for the draw, but the 6ft 3in Las Palmas goalie kept saving the overhead on target shots. In theory Elche scored 3 goals, unfortunately one of them was in their own net. Their run of 6 games undefeated was broken. players that would still be in League One if it wasn’t for him. They beat the Villa 2-0 and it never really looked in doubt, even with Jack Grealish missing a penalty. There’s a lot of clubs looking for decent managers right now - and I bet Chris Wilder isn’t on any of their lists. Burnley and Newcastle nailed their colours to the mast nice and early when Steve Bruce went for Joe Linton and Andy Carroll up front for the away team. Slick little intricate passing was not the order of the day at Turf Moor and Burnley eventually won with a goal from a set-piece. No, I didn’t see that coming either. For about 70 minutes at Old Trafford, it looked like there might be a win for Ferguson. Big Dunc set his side up in the same kind of way as the win over Chelsea, less half his squad with a tummy bug. It didn’t matter as United again struggled to break down a team sitting deep and not really attacking until they threw on the one player they have with the ability to actually get through a team doing just that. Mason Greenwood got the equaliser. Personally, I didn’t think Moise Kean was that bad in the 18 minutes he had on the pitch as we got a rare instance of a sub being subbed - and it didn’t look particularly tactical, judging by the blatant snub from the stand-in manager to the young striker. Ferguson said he was doing it to ‘waste time’ which is exactly what many Evertonians feel Kean has been doing ever since he rocked up from Juventus.

Las Ramblas GS

Due to the heavy rain we experienced together with the fact we held our AGM there was no report for last week. Welcome to our new committee members Olga and Alan Douglas. However, I can’t let it go unnoticed that Geoff Biggerstaff, together Dean Tracey took Friday’s 2 Ball Better Ball with a whopping 45 points! Geoff was one of our founding members some 22 years ago and is ‘hanging up’ his clubs at the end of this year. We wish him well in his ‘retirement’. With a score of 82 points, it was Olga Douglas (she who must now be obeyed)! Dave Pulling, Ron Phipps and Nora Betts who triumphed in Monday’s 6x6x6. Wednesday’s ‘Joker Stableford’ was a close call with the top 4 all scoring 36 points! After lots of count back Lindsay Forbes was declared the winner followed by Annemarie Weisheit, Ron Phipps and Richard Connock. Just the one ‘2’ today which went to Ron. Friday saw us competing in a ‘Bowmaker’ (which is the best 3 scores out of 4 to count on each hole). With a winning score of 112 points it was the usual suspects John Drakesmith, Heinz Lei, Mike Chapman and Dave Pulling (him again) who took 1st place. This week’s quote belongs to Peter Dobereiner who commented, ‘Half of golf is fun; the other half is putting.’ Peter Reffell

SMGS at La Finca

Imanyo GS ABBEY ANGLING

42 members and 6 guests made their way to La Finca for the 2nd round of the Bogey’s Shield, so named after long time President Phil Birtwistle’s son’s restaurant in Villamartin. A medal format once saw relatively low turnouts for this competition, played over 5 rounds throughout the season, but the influx of new members over recent months seems to have increased participation. Given that 48 players is the maximum the society usually allows for on golf days, the desire is clearly there. Starting on the 10th, something of an unknown for some and an immediate put-off for many, and with tee times brought forward, a number of players had no or little time to practice before starting out. This proved especially influential in regard to discovering late the slickness of the greens, much faster than anything the society has played on recently. This factor, as well as the midround strengthening of the wind, probably had most to do with the poor scoring generally achieved. Only Brian Mulligan played to his handicap. With the day’s results Theo Boelhouwer goes top of the Bogey’s leaderboard, with Tony Smale second and Norman Cahill third. In the Order of Merit Norman Cahill leads the way.

La Finca winning results, by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 5th Mike Kaylor (82), 4th Tommy Boyle (80 on CB), 3rd Mike Jordan (80 on CB), 2nd Norman Padmore (78) and 1st Alan Hill (76). Silver Category: 5th Scotty Philips (81), 4th Ian Merga (79 on CB), 3rd Dennis Freeman (79 on CB), 2nd Kyrre Skarsmoen (77) and 1st, with the day’s best score, Brian Mulligan with a nett 72. Gold Category: 5th Jim Imrie (79 on CB), 4th Colin Smith (79 on CB), 3rd John Osborne (78), 2nd Gordon Miekle (76) and 1st in-form President Tony Smale (73). Nearest the pins (sponsored by Mick Roscoe’s The Property Shop): Hole 3 Andy MacDonald, Hole 6 Scotty Philips, Hole 13 Brian Mulligan, Hole 16 Norman Cahill. Abacus: Roger Brierley Best Guest Winner and Runner-up: Robert Gillies (82) and Neil Redpath (83) respectively. Our thanks go to all La Finca staff for their contribution to an enjoyable day. Next week we will be at Villamartin. Keep up to date with all SMGS matters by logging on to our website www.smgs.org or simply give Captain Phil de Lacy a call on 652553362.

Many thanks to Ted and Ann Adams for sponsoring the day and well done to Ted for playing with us for the first time in three years and completing the course with a respectable 24 points. We were a bit low on the turnout for our visit to Altorreal due to changing the date, the course was in excellent condition and the day was perfect for golf with the sun shining making a pleasant 70o. The format for the day was full handicap Stableford split into two groups. Winner of the”Ted Adams Trophy” from group A was “Mr Twelve Trees” Steve Arye, now the handicap secretaries best mate, with an excellent score of 41 points, runner up on a three way count back between Andy Godfrey, Tom Goulden and Dave Martin was “Lonely Lorry Driver” Andy Godfrey with 37 points. Winner of group B, which took him four years to achieve, was Steve Day with an excellent 38 points, runner up was “Keep it in the Family” Alan Ralph with 31 points, nearest the pins winners were holes 4 and 17 “Lonely Lorry Driver” Andy Godfrey, holes 5 and 8 Chris Houghton, hole 10 “Keep it in the Family” Alan Ralph and hole 14 Tom Goulden. The Football card was won by Kim Court with Celtic winning €40 and raising €40 for our chosen charities of 2019. We would like to thank Antonio, Norma and staff at Imanyo’s for the fantastic food and great hospitality. Photo shows Ted Adams presenting the trophy to winner Steve Ayre. www.imanyogolfsociety.com
