from the neck by a cord or chain.

It is believed that a man entered the church in the early hours of Friday night, into Saturday morning and forced open the doors leading to the museum of La Purísima, Torrevieja’s patron, wherein lies her statue and crosses. The statue is of huge importance to the town and is carried through the streets in solemn procession during the town’s patronal fiestas every year.

Officers are currently analyzing the footage from the church’s video

surveillance system. Meanwhile, the Asociación de Hijos de la Inmaculada has assured that the crosses have little or no economic value but are hugely sentimental and have appealed for their safe return.

According to a statement by the Association, they are deeply saddened by the incident in which a man accessed the Arciprestal Temple in the early hours of Saturday morning, he reached the back door of the Museum of La Purisima, broke the lock and forced his way inside. He then forced open one of the exhibition’s display cases containing the two pectoral crosses. The Asociación de Hijos de la Inmaculada said “despite having no economic value, they do have enormous sentimental value for the people of Torrevieja."

One of the crosses is worn by the statue of the virgin when she is on display in the church and the other, which is known as ‘The Peacock’ adorns the statue when she is being carried through the town on special religious occasions.

The theft is currently being investigated by the Guardia Civil.

Meawhile, the pastor of La Purísima, Manuel Martínez and the president of Asociación de Hijos de la Inmaculada Antonio Aniorte have appealed

specifically to “those establishments for the sale of antiques or second-hand items so that they are alert if someone tries to offer any of these pieces.” The pair have also asked that anyone with any information at all, please report it to the Guardia Civil in Torrevieja.

Aniorte said, “this robbery must be seen as a robbery of the whole of the town of Torrevieja” and strongly urges the person who took the crosses, especially given they are of no monetary worth, to return then as soon as possible.

Torrevieja A 40 year old Icelandic man has been arrested after the alleged murder of his stepfather at his home in Torrevieja. A 66 year old man, also from Iceland, died on Sunday after an alleged assault at an address in Los Balcones. Guardia Civil arrested the victim’s stepson at the scene.

The alleged homicide is said to have taken place at around 3am on Calle Cruz del Sur in the Los Balcones urbanisation of Torrevieja. According to reports, the suspect accessed his mother’s home by jumping over the wall and once inside, he is alleged to have pushed his stepfather.

The victim then fell against a window which broke. The victim sustained several injuries and had lost a significant amount of blood. Officers and then paramedics who were first to arrive at the scene tried to revive the man but he died from his

injuries.

Guardia Civil first suspected accidental homicide – as the suspect’s mother had claimed - but on investigation by crime scene specialists, officers found this version of events improbable and arrested the 40 year old man.

Sources also indicated that in addition to the initial suspicions by crime scene analysts about how the window glass was scattered, the deceased presented some stab wounds that do not appear to have been caused by the breakage of the window.

The Court of Instruction number 4 of Torrevieja will take over proceedings and statements will be taken behind closed doors, a secrecy order imposed. The autopsy will determine the exact cause of death.

Torrevieja’s annual carnival festivities have been announced. The celebrations run from January 31st until February 29th with the grand Carnival Parade taking place on February 16th at 5.30pm.

The events programme was revealed this week by Councillor for Fiestas Concha Sala alongside the President of the Carnival Cultural Association, Francisco Pizana.

Torrevieja Carnival, already declared an event of Provincial Tourist Interest, could next year win the declaration of Regional Tourist Interest, according to Pizana.

The fun kicks off on January 31, at the Municipal Theatre, at 9.00 pm when the opening Gala takes place. Tickets for the show can be purchased for just 3 euros.

The Carnival Queens will be crowned on February 1st alongside a screening of a film made about last year’s event.

The XII Internatonal Drag Queen Competition takes place on February 8th at 9.30pm at the International Auditorium with participation already confirmed by seven participants from Seville, Cartagena, Murcia, Madrid, Malaga and two from Gran Canaria. The Gala will be presented by "La Plexy", the host of Madrid’s Pride festival for many years.

The Carnival for the Elderly takes place at the CMO on February 20th at 6pm and the children’s parade will wind its way through the streets on February 21st with participation expected from many of the town’s schools.

House prices According to recently released statistics the Costa Calida saw some of the biggest property price increases last year, with Murcia as a region seeing an 11 percent increase in value of property, one of the highest in Spain.

Whilst this still leaves houses 43 percent lower (locally) than at the 2007 peak, experts believe that it is a sure sign that house prices will continue to rise this year. Across the whole of the Murcia region prices have gone up by 2.8

percent. This is just above the annual rise of 2.6 percent during 2019, claims valuation firm Tinsa.

In northern and north-western regions, there has been an overall decrease in values, with properties in Asturias dropping by almost 4 percent in just one year.

Blackspots such as Ciudad Real in central Spain have seen values drop by more than 10 percent. Spanish properties are still worth a third less than in 2007.

New Ministers Spain's new president Pedro Sánchez, of the PSOE (socialists), has not officially revealed which of his MPs will form his cabinet, but some names have already been released, just three days after the left-wing coalition government between the PSOE and Podemos was voted in.

Isabel Celaá has been reelected as Minister for Education, although she will not be PSOE spokeswoman this time around – that rôle has been given to María Jesús Montero, who also retains her position as Minister for the Treasury.

Former Supreme Court judge Fernando Grande-Marlaska keeps his interior ministry job, and Reyes Maroto remains at the head of the Ministry of Industry.

Astronaut Pedro Duque – Spain's first man on the moon, every child's hero in 2003 when he first went up into space, and the minister given the best ranking in a public opinion poll 100 days into the PSOE's government once it took power in June 2018 – will also keep his role, as Minister for Science and Universities.

A brand-new ministry for the Social Security, or national insurance, will be created in light

of concerns about the future of State pensions, especially since the National Institute for Statistics (INE) revealed that the country currently only has one worker per pensioner.

This area has, until now, been part of the Ministry of Work.

Agriculture minister Luis Planas retains his job, and although José Luis Ábalos – Minister for Public Works – will remain in his position, his department will be renamed

as the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda, which reflects more closely what its purpose is: civil engineering and infrastructure, mostly focusing on roads and rail.

Health Minister María Luisa Carcedo – who took over from former Valencia regional minister Carmen Montón when the latter's master's degree dissertation was revealed to have been partly plagiarised – will not continue as head of her department, although it is not clear as yet who

will fill her shoes and what her subsequent position will be within the newly-formed government.

Arts and Culture Minister Màxim Huerta – a well-known journalist – was only in his job a week after the PSOE came into power in June 2018, since details came to light of a tax avoidance issue, leading him to resign.

His rôle was taken over by José Guirão, who will not continue in the position, although again, it is not known what his new job will be or who will take over his culture ministry leadership.

It has already been confirmed that three PSOE women will join Podemos leader Pablo Iglesias as Deputy Presidents – Carmen Calvo, Minister for Presidency, Parliamentary Relations and Equality, and who already was Deputy President, will carry on with the job, along with Economy Minister Nadia Calviño, and Energy Transition and Environment minister Teresa Ribera.

Podemos has been promised ministerial rôles, although these have not been confirmed.

They may include defence, currently headed up by Margarita Robles.

SPORTS PALACE HOSTS LIFESAVING COURSE Torrevieja’s sports palace is hosting a lifesaving course this year. Participating students will obtain the Certificate of Professionalism (AFDP0109) LIFESAVING IN AQUATIC FACILITIES, which qualifies them for the performance of functions as a swimmer-lifeguard, lifeguard in swimming pools, lifeguard in water parks and lifeguard in natural pools.

The course was unveiled by Councillor for Development, Employment and Local Development, Vicente Chazarra who explained training is being coordinated by the Local Development Agency (ADL) in Torrevieja and subsidized by LABORA in collaboration with the town hall.

15 students will be put through their paces in 370 hours of theoretical and practical training sessions at the municipal swimming pool.

PRIZES AWARDED FOR CHRISTMAS DISPLAYS Farmacia Vera, Floristería Carmina and Casa Maciá, have been announced as the winners of the Christmas window display contest organized by the Department of Commerce of the City of Torrevieja.

Deputy Mayor and Councilor for Commerce of the City of Torrevieja, Rosario Martínez Chazarra, presented the three prizes to the winners, the total prize fund amounting to €1,225.

Rosario Martínez commended the effort and creativity made by the almost 40 shops in Torrevieja that participated in the contest, which has already become a Torrevejense Christmas classic.

The first prize, 600 euros, was awarded to Farmacia Vera, located on Calle Azorín.

Second prize, 425 euros, went to Carmina Florist, located on Calle Ramón Gallud. And finally, the third prize of 200 euros, went to Casa Maciá, located next to La Plasa Central Market.

PARK OF NATIONS LIGHTING FIXED Torrevieja’s Councillor for Quality of Urban Services (Works and Services, Maintenance of Public Roads, Public and Storm Lighting), Sandra Sánchez, announced this week that works have been completed to repair and renovate the public lighting system in the town’s beloved the Park of the Nations. Works have been in progress since July 2019.

Sánchez explained that a revision of the entire lighting system inside the Park was carried out, with the aim of carrying out a series of repairs on beacons, spotlights, projectors, etc., both in the workshop and in the Park of Nations itself. The 65 streetlights which line the park’s walkways have been changed to 7W LED lamps, as well as the 18 spotlights which light up the circular stage area, also changed over to LEDs.

San Antón’s Day is celebrated in Spain on 17th January. Saint Antonio Abad, to give him his full name, is the Patron Saint of animals and so on the nearest Sunday to the saint’s day, it is traditional for Spaniards to take their animals the church for what has to be the most unusual of blessings. All animals are welcome and over the years the ceremony has included the wild and the exotic as well as domestic pets and farm animals.

The local blessing will be held in Orihuela Costa on Sunday 19th January at 12 noon at the Ecumenical Church, Calle Diamante, La Zenia. The blessing will be followed by a dog show at 12.30pm and a pet contest at 1.15pm For the first time, this year local residents also have the opportunity to go to Orihuela City and experience the large blessing that takes place in the neighbourhood of San Anton with a free bus service being provided from the

coast. Those wishing to reserve a place can do so at Playa Flamenca Town Hall.

The San Antón neighbourhood nestles at the foot of the mountains, next to the Palm Grove of Orihuela. Those attending the blessing will also be able to enjoy different activities, such as the mass, parades, a fairgrounds and traditional San Anton treats such as palm heart (Palmito) and corn nougat (Turrón de maiz). After Mass, according to tradition, the blessing of the animals will take place.

Another important activity is the famous National Charlatan contest, in which the contestants use their powers of speech and persuasion to sell their products. At the end of the day, once again in line with

tradition, the 'raffle of the sow' takes place. A sow and her piglets are raffled and the money raised goes to social works.

On the same day, the Royal Order of San Antón will make its annual awards to people or institutions that have made an outstanding contribution to the benefit of Orihuela. This year it will be given to the everyday heroes who helped residents of Orihuela and the Vega Baja area during the September floods.

The time table for Sunday 19th January is: 10: 30am: Mass in the hermitage of San Antón.

11: 30am: Blessing of animals.

12noon: National Charlatans Contest at Ramonet Square.

8pm: Sow raffle.

Changes afoot for local healthcare The regional Minister for Health, Ana Barceló, has announced that the company which manages the local healthcare provision, including Torrevieja Hospital and numerous medical centres, Ribera Salud, will not be given a five-year extension.

She said: "Healthcare will revert to the Department of Health on schedule, that is, in October 2021.”

This date is when the 15 year contract signed in 2006 by the Valencian government expires. Although the contract has the possibility of extending the management for five more years, until 2026, the Minister for Health has finally ruled it out and on 15th October, 2021 the Hospital de Torrevieja and its Department of Health will be managed directly by the regional government’s health department.

The Department of Health of Torrevieja incorporates 10 health centres and 12 auxiliary offices that offer healthcare to more than 140,000 inhabitants across the municipalities of: Torrevieja, San Fulgencio, Formentera del Segura, Benijófar, Rojales, Guardamar del Segura, Los Montesinos, San Miguel from Salinas and Pilar de la Horadada as well as Orihuela Costa , Torremendo, La Mata and Los Palacios.

Confirmation of the change to the public health system of Torrevieja Hospital and its health department came hot on the heels of an announcement by the management company Ribera Salud, to build a second health centre in Orihuela Costa which has been called for by local residents for many years. The commitment by Ribera Salud was made

within its strategic investment plan 20212026 and therefore would only be feasible if the Department of Health had extended its management contract for the additional five years. So the question now is will the promise made to the residents of Orihuela Costa be honoured by the government? This was a promise that socialist Ana Barceló did not like given the new national government had already expressed its opposition to extending private concessions related to the health system, Ana Barceló said that she will not accept "exchange currencies" in regard to health.

She said: “What I want to make clear is that the healthcare of Valencians and their health is above any other interest.

That is our commitment, as we are demonstrating, and it will never be an exchange currency.”

Without mentioning it directly, this was in reference to the announcement by Ribera Salud to build a new medical centre in Orihuela Costa as long as its contract was extended.

"The concession of Torrevieja will be reverted to the public system as planned, and there is no doubt that the Department will respond to all the needs raised by the Department," insisted the Minister.

Forced hand It had been announced that the City Council of Orihuela is looking for some land in Orihuela Costa to be used for the construction of a second health centre and that, if not materialised, the local entity would assume the works of a new medical office. That announcement was

used by Ribera Salud to declare that it was committed to building the much desired second medical centre and that it would do so between 2021 and 2026.

In a statement issued by Ribera Salud it requested that “the Department of Health give the relevant authorisations so that the construction of the centre could becomes a reality as soon as possible” According to Ribera Salud, this project is part of the strategic plan 2021-2026 for the Department of Health of Torrevieja which considers investments "with a vision of the future." There was no mention of the contract expiring on 15th October 2021 or that its extension depends exclusively on the Ministry of Health.

ocamer is a Spanish family business which evolved some 70 years ago – in fact, the business spans four generations.

The present senior director Rosendo Mercader Torres started as a child by helping his father collect insurance premiums from clients, much like Prudential insurance used to operate in the UK for life insurance. In 1950 Rocamer went into the funeral business. In 1988 they built their first tanatorio, a crematorium in San Pedro del Piñatar.

Rosendo’s son, Rosendo Mercader Gimenez, is the current Managing Director. Then there is the grandson Mario Mercader who is Finance Director.

As for myself, I had not worked in the funeral industry until approached by Rosendo Mercader some 15 years ago. I had just moved to San Pedro del Piñatar and at that time, there were only three British families in San Pedro. On suggestion from Spanish neighbours I took out a funeral insurance policy.

Within a few months, I had a knock on my

door. There stood five Spanish gentlemen -one of whom I recognised as being with Rocamer. To cut a long story short, they invited me to work with them essentially dealing with Britons or any other English speaking person for insurance or funerals.

Rocamer wanted to adapt to requirements of the British people who were coming to the area at a rapid pace. I assisted in shaping this requirement.

Rocamer already own three tanatorios or funeral homes, and the new tanatorio in San Miguel de Salinas, which opened at the end of 2019, is the fourth.

Orihuela Medieval Market Two prison workers The Medieval Market held annually in Orihuela has built a national reputation and attracts visitors from across Spain.

This year the event will be held from Friday 31st January and promises to be bigger and better than ever. Although final details and the schedule for the free buses which will run between Orihuela Costa and the Medieval Market are yet to be released, the 2020 event will once again be divided into two camps: the Moors and the Christians.

Medieval Spain was very different to most European countries. Rather than jousting, fair maidens and armoured knights, from 8th to the 15th Century Spain was largely occupied by the Moors, who were Arabs from North Africa. As a result, the architecture is much closer to that found in Morocco than in southwestern Europe – think Alhambra Palace in Granada, and the Great Mosque in Córdoba.

Elements of Moorish Spain are revived in the Mediaeval markets such as fragrant tea tents - designed like traditional Moroccan and Algerian lounges with embroidered satin cushions for seats, lowslung silver-topped tables, hot mint tea with abundant sugar served up in decorative glasses, poured from ornate silver teapots and served with almond biscuits - and music played on the laúd, a popular instrument of the time similar to the lyre.

Stalls holders dress in traditional outfits such as tunics and turbans made from modest materials and discreet colours, much like the ordinary person on the street would have worn at the time whilst going about their daily life and work.

Birds of prey, wandering minstrels, street theatre, fire-eating, juggling displays, donkeys and other animals all add to the atmosphere. The streets between stalls are often lined with straw

to make the surface softer for working livestock, as was typical of the time.

Effectively, you'll take a step back several centuries when you mingle with the crowds negotiating the network of stalls selling traditional food stuffs and wares, with the vast majority of goods hand-crafted. On the food side, fig and date cakes, spices, nuts, cheeses and sausages from all over Spain and medicinal herbs and teas are typical finds.

There is also everything from satin and lace (cushion covers, tablecloths, sofa throws, scarves) to leather (belts, handbags, decorative items), coloured glass (lamps and mirrors galore), jewellery, and an array of brightlycoloured, unique ornamental and practical pieces. Orihuela Medieval Market also hosts demonstrations and workshops for children and adults, and again once the full programme is issued we will provide the all details.

assaulted Two prison workers have been assaulted in less than a week at Alicante’s Fontcalent prison. The prison workers’ union, Acaip-UGT, has criticised the lack of personnel in the prison’s psychiatric wing where the assaults took place, saying the situation makes it impossible for staff to offer proper medical attention to inmates.

A union spokesperson revealed, “in less than a week there have been two serious incidents at the Fontcalent Penitentiary Psychiatric Hospital, in which two workers have been assaulted."

The first incident occurred on January 4th when a clinic assistance “was attacked by an inmate who punched him in the face during the administering of medication”. The second assault occurred on the afternoon January 10th.

The inmate involved had, until that day

held a position of responsibility at the prison, carrying the food trays. He approached the head of services to ask for an explanation as to why he had been relegated from that position.

When the head of services told him that he should take the petition through the regulatory channel, the inmate punched him in the mouth.

The union said, “We want to highlight the serious problem that exists in the Psychiatric wing of the Penitentiary of Alicante in which there are only three psychiatrist roles covered out of seven that should be filled. This means that the inmates with serious psychiatric disorders cannot receive a correct medical attention.”

The union also criticised the workforce deficit and the lack of training of workers, among other issues.

Music without borders Rojales is set to celebrate its popular Music without Borders event again this year.

Musicas sin Fronteras 2020 takes place from March 20th to April 24th and features a series of five musical performances which take place each Friday night at 9pm at the Capitol Theatre, Rojales.

Tickets will be on sale from 17th February onwards (available at the Rojales Archaeological Museum) and are priced at €8 for an individual concert or €25 for all five (€5 per concert).

AENA spends 40.8 million on Town Hall orders closure Fire and soundproofing Alicante of motorhome parking in explosion in homes Guardamar Mar Azul

Airport management firm AENA has had to spend €40.8 million on soundproofing the 3000 homes beside Alicante-Elche airport. The money has been spent over the last two decades with homeowners in Torrellano, Saladas, El Altet in Elche and Urbanova in Alicante benefitting.

Windows and doors have been improved to offer better sound insulation and mitigate the noise generated by air traffic.

According to the latest AENA data, which covers the period from 2000-2018, 2,900 properties have been acoustically insulated in the Alicante-Elche airport area. Over the same time period, AENA has paid for soundproofing works on a total of 23,897 across Spain.

Only Madrid, with 12,902 properties and 169.7 million euros of investment, is ahead of El Altet in terms of the number of properties included in the soundproofing project and funds allocated.

“With the objective of mitigating the effects of noise and, at the same time, responding to the concerns of interested parties, AENA devotes a large part of its efforts to the continuous improvement of programs for measuring, controlling and minimizing acoustic impact in the airport environment,” a spokesperson for AENA said.

Torrellano public school, Antonio Machado school, was also included in the project when at first, it did not factor in the plans. In the end, thanks to public pressure, AENA agreed to include the school. Since the works were completed, the school has noticed a benefit both acoustically and thermally. The school, which serves around 400 students, also noticed that since works were completed almost a month and a half ago, teachers no longer have to pause lessons when airplanes fly over the school.

Torrevieja town hall reported this week that a closure decree has been issued to the motorhome parking lot which has been in operation since the end of November on common ground beside residential Eliseos Playa in the Mar Azul urbanisation on the southern coast of Torrevieja.

Councillor Federico Alarcón (PP) explained that the company operating the campervan parking facility must immediately cease activity at the time of receiving the notification of the closure order. Otherwise, the City Council of Torrevieja could continue with disciplinary action and impose fines or force the closure by its own means. The main reason for the closure is that the licenses requested by the promoter do not conform to the activity that in the end is being carried out on the premises.

The land is classified as urban ground which allows parking, but not the ‘lucrative private parking’ currently in operation. Many of the residents in the area complained to the City Council about the facility, which began to take shape during the previous government’s administration when a private individual bought the interior space between blocks and removed the trees and palm trees that had been planted. Local residents also denounced that an access had been built from the outside to the car park - with capacity for about 80 motor homes on 5,500 square meters - without any authorization from the owners.

The daily rate for use of the motorhome parking facility is seven euros and it provides different services – waste disposal, toilets and showers.

A fire caused the explosion of three gas cylinders, destroying a fast food restaurant in Guardamar. The fire, which broke out on Saturday, caused three butane gas canisters to explode inside a fast food restaurant in El Moncayo. The restaurant was closed at the time of the fire, said sources from the Local Police.

The exact cause of the original fire is as yet unknown but it is believed to have ignited at around two in the afternoon – fortunately, with no one on the premises so no injuries were sustained. Experts suspect a short circuit as the initial cause of the blaze although it will be an investigation by firefighters and the Guardia Civil that will confirm how the fire started.

Fire crews from Torrevieja were dispatched to the scene alongside Guardia Civil and local police. After about an hour, firefighters had the blaze under control.

Indian rhino baby doing well Terra Natura Benidorm saw the birth of an Indian Rhinoceros in September last. The young rhino was born at 50 kilos and since then has grown to an impressive 200 kilo weight.

Keepers revealed this week that little ‘Duna’ is about to begin the period of weaning from her mother Shiwa. Her carefully monitored diet will change continually over the coming weeks. Shiwa and Duna between then consume around 30 kilos of fodder and 10 kilos of fruit and vegetables every day. When vets noticed an increase in Duna’s

appetite, they have begun to feed her more to ensure she has the nutrients required for this busy growth stage.

Duna’s diet is now almost the same as that of an adult rhinoceros but from time to time she continues to seek her mother’s milk which is highly nutritious.

Behavioural changes are also being observed by both Duna and her mother Shiwa. Shiwa is calmer and less aggressive towards the rest of the rhino herd, becoming less overprotective than she was when Duna was a

newborn.

Duna is also displaying more self-confidence and is becoming more playful. She is making more attempts to explore her environment and is steadily moving away from her mother for longer periods. Keepers said that Duna is beginning to venture alone through the meadow showing a preference to running around the exterior of the enclosure rather than the heated interior.

The team of vets and caregivers at Terra Natura are delighted with the progress being made by the young rhinoceros.

The park is a member of the European reproduction project (EEP) of Indian rhinoceros.

According to the strategic plans of the European Association of Zoos and Aquariums (EAZA), when Duna is fully weaned, she will be moved to another centre to join with other genetically compatible rhinos.

At present, it is estimated that there are only 3,500 Indian rhinoceros left in the wild. The species has undergone a remarkable recovery, since in 1970 there were only 600 individuals left. It is on the Red List of threatened species and is considered a vulnerable species.

The salt boat makers

If you live in Torrevieja and have a basic level of Spanish, you might be interested in the special screening of a documentary about the artisan salt workers in the town. The documentary follows the story of the craftsmen who undertake the making of the traditional salt boats, unique to Torrevieja.

The documentary premieres on Thursday 16th January at the Virgen del Carmen Cultural Centre.

It was filmed and produced by the Image Workshop of Alicante University in collaboration with the town hall of Torrevieja, Salins and the Ars

Creatio Cultural Association.

Admission to the screening, at 6pm, is free (with an invitation ticket, which are available for collection from the Virgen del Carmen from Monday 13th).

The documentary describes the process salt crafts, an activity steeped in tradition among salt workers. Salt artisans Juan Pujol, Manuel Sala and Miguel Pérez share the unique process of salt craft, the film showing their skills in making the salt boats and other decorative objects by hand. The trailer (link below) shows a glimpse of the work involved in making each boat – the frame is

made by hand out of cane, then wrapped in cotton string and, when the conditions are right (they need wind and the right level of salinity of the lake), the frames are submerged in the pink waters of the lake.

The salt industry is of great historical and cultural importance and these craftsmen are keeping the old traditions alive. So, whether you live here or are on holiday in Torrevieja, this unique documentary is a very special glimpse into local custom.

GBP / EUR UPDATE The pound had a quiet start to the week. The UK services sector PMI gave sterling a brief boost when it came in at the breakeven point of 50.

Whilst by no means a stellar number, it was above the forecast 49.2 and largely in line with the results across Europe. Stronger UK house prices also gave some help to sterling, although this was somewhat cancelled out by weaker-than expected retail sales data. Most of the drama came on Thursday. In a speech, Bank of England (BoE) Governor Mark Carney stated that there could be a “relatively prompt response” from the BoE if the current economic weakness in the UK continued. Investors took this to mean a change in interest rates may be imminent and sterling lost out to the euro and fell close to a two-week low against the US dollar. On the same day, dramatic political news had a less than dramatic impact on the pound. The House of Commons voted 330 to 231 in favour of the Withdrawal Agreement Bill. The vote means that thanks to the majority achieved by the Conservatives at the end of last year, the Brexit deal is now in motion and will pass to the House of Lords next week. This puts the government on track to stick to the 31st January deadline for departure and will mark the start of the 11-month

transition period until the end of the year. The outcome was largely expected and the pound had little reaction other than a slight dip against the US dollar and euro.

In Europe, services and composite PMIs came in at a positive 50.9 and few of the readings were in the contraction zone below 50. All of them either matched or beat forecast and all were either higher or unchanged on the month. It may be too early to suggest that the slowdown across Europe had ceased, but it did bring a sense of tentative optimism to the continent which helped the central currency. Inflation for pan-Euroland was exactly on target at a provisional 1.3% and retail sales were stronger than forecast, up 1% in November and 2.2% higher on the year. However, it wasn’t all coming up roses for the euro and disappointing numbers on German factory orders added some pressure. Orders fell 1.3% in November, resulting in a 6.5% decline. At the same time, in France the trade deficit came in wider than expected and there was a slight softening of consumer confidence by three points, to 102. The results weren’t particularly surprising but investors marked down the euro all the same and it lost a third of a cent to sterling following the results.

Terrifying video of Tenerife tot goes viral

Irish Olympians train in Torrevieja

A video shared by English newspaper the Daily Star has gone viral over the last few days. Apparently recorded in Tenerife, the video shows a small child walking along the outer ledge of a tall building in Tenerife.

The video shows a girl running along a cornice, high up on a tourist apartment block in Playa Paraíso, Adeje, Tenerife. In the terrifying footage, which was shared by an English radio host Jeremy Dixon, the little girl goes out the window, runs along the ledge until she reaches the balcony and returns to the window but not before taking a heart stopping stumble which, thankfully, did not end in tragedy.

Jeremy Dixon said in his tweet, “This is absolutely terrifying to watch. Apparently recorded in Tenerife... I always try to book ground floor rooms when on hols with the kids.. you can see why.”

The tweet already has more than 1.5 million views.

A group of elite athletes has chosen Torrevieja’s sports facilities for its warm weather training base for the forthcoming season. A group of around thirty athletes plus their coaches, physiotherapists and management staff visited Torrevieja in a partnership between the Athletics Federation of Ireland, Northern Ireland and the town hall of Torrevieja.

The athletes enjoyed the facilities of Torrevieja’s sports city between December 28th and January 10th.

Athletes used the recently renovated athletics track as well as local gyms and our fabulous walkways – coastal promenades, trails and the Natural Park of La Mata and Torrevieja.

Among the group were four Olympic athletes: - Paul Pollock (qualified for Tokyo 2020 in the Valencia Marathon 2019).

- Fionnuala McCormack (qualified for Tokyo 2020 in the Chicago Marathon 2019).

- Kevin Seaward (Olympic athlete who aims to qualify at the Seville 2020 Marathon).

- David Leavy (Paralympic athlete T38 / 1500 m Qualified for Tokyo 2020).

In addition to the four Olympic athletes, Torrevieja welcomed: - Kerry O'Flaherty, Olympic athlete (Rio de Janeiro) 3000 metre steeplechase - Ellish Flanagan, European silver medallist, 3000 metre steeplechase Councillor for Sport Diana Box has confirmed that the Irish athletes enjoyed a perfect Training Camp in Torrevieja and that next year they aim to return to engage in another similar preparation on the same dates.

Currently, the facilities are being used by four members of the Finnish selection who are training for athletic walking events. The athletes from Finland visit Torrevieja every year in winter and engage in a two week training camp to prepare for their international competitions.

Local Freemasons visit Orihuela orphanage Recently Freemasons from Caledonia Lodge visited the San Jose Obrero Orphanage, in Orihuela, to present them with a surprise Christmas gift of one thousand euros for the benefit of the children.

WBro Bullock had the pleasure of sitting down with the Director of the orphanage Sr. Vicente Martínez Agulló, who informed him of the history and many achievements of the San Jose Obrero Foundation over recent years.

They now care for and house eighty orphans, of all nationalities, and is also a day centre with twenty-four places available for children with very few other resources. Most of these arrive at five in the afternoon, do their homework, shower and have dinner before going back to sleep in their own home. They also provide sheltered accommodation for young people, helping them to make the transition from orphanage life to becoming selfsufficient in the outside world a little easier. A very important function as the

transition is never easy.

The San Jose Obrero Orphanage is also responsible for the running of the local school, which four hundred children from the Orihuela district attend. In addition, they operate skills workshops in carpentry, hairdressing and car mechanics, which offer a full four years of very useful training with fully qualified staff.

After these four years they are able to obtain a Certificate of Competence before leaving the home and hopefully finding gainful employment within local industry.

The motto of the organisation is "No One Grows up Alone".

Jenny and Diane's bargain stall will be joining in with loads of new treats on offer, awaiting old and new friends of Charity 4 Charities, who gave out a whopping €19,000 in 2019 to other registered Charities needing extra support.

The Mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, the councillor for the Environment, Dámaso Aparicio, accompanied by the rector of the Miguel Hernández University, Juan José Ruiz, hosted the conference, entitled Climate Change Days. The event was held at the Orihuela campus of the Miguel Hernández University and attended by regional representatives and local councillors from across the Vega Baja.

In his opening address the Mayor said that "in the region of Vega Baja we have suffered the effects of climate change for a long time and the DANA that we experienced in September is a phenomenon that, unfortunately, is expected to become more frequent and to increase in intensity”. The Mayor took the opportunity to call for Orihuela to become the headquarters of the office for the study and analysis of floods in the

Mediterranean, at a European level.

He also requested more local solutions, again on the back of the devastating floods that hit the region and highlighted importance of being able to “gather in the municipality all the representatives “that can provide light to face these devastating phenomena”.

The mayor of Orihuela also thanked "all the administrations that have struggled to meet the needs of our

population" and was keen to point out that the region still needs more help and funding saying that "the aid that has arrived is not enough."

The rector of the Miguel Hernández University, Juan José Ruiz, expressed his desire to obtain “good conclusions on this day that can contribute to the objectives of alleviating what has happened and can happen again in the Vega Baja”.

Grant helps renovate Los Montesinos industrial estate A grant awarded by IVACE has helped towards the cost of renovation work carried out on the industrial estate in Los Montesinos. The Levante II industrial park has been undergoing works for the last two months and with thanks to a grant from the Valencian Institute of Business Competitiveness (IVACE), works were heavily subsidised. The overall cost of the works was €200,000 with €120,000 covered by the grant.

As part of the renovation project, roads were resurfaced, traffic signalling was improved and a surveillance system

directly linked to the local police has been installed. Pavements were also replaced and guttering installed.

Mayor of Los Montesinos, José Manuel Butrón expressed his satisfaction at the works which he says will “favour the business development of the area.” He also thanked the Generalitat Valenciana for the IVACE grant and was keen to remind the public of general improvements being made in the town to improve municipal infrastructure. For example, an electric vehicle charging point was unveiled last month.

Dear Editor Can you please warn people about what I consider is a money scam by the Spanish Tax office.

As now it seems that officials world wide have access to your financial details.

I am nearly 70, retired and live in Spain as I can’t afford to live in the UK. For the first time in my life having a little money over at the end of the month.

I have some pensions and savings in the UK. Where I pay all my taxes.

The pensions are because, Me and my dead Husband worked all of our lives in the UK. Paying out taxes.

The savings have been accumulated by the death of my Father, Mother and Husband. All who worked and paid UK taxes all of there lives.

I also pay all suma's due to the Spanish government.

The Spanish Tax office has now looked into my finances and have decided that I owe them nearly 3000€'s Tax for 2014. plus 595€'s

interest on late payment. On a bill they only sent to me last week.

That is dated Nov 2019. As far back as I am told they are allowed to go.

I have emailed the European Parliament and the UK Embassy in Madrid with so far getting no answer. As to whether this is even legal.

I have NEVER earned any money in Spain. All of my Money is paid in Stirling in the UK. I then transfer it to Spain to live off.

I don't think that I owe the Spanish Tax people any income tax, as none of my money was earned in Spain. I have also always paid my UK taxes.

I am told that the Spanish Tax people are targeting British people at the moment properly to do with UK coming out of the EU, but it is thought that they will go on to other countries Nationals later.

If I have to pay this money I will be again short of money to live on.

Holiday home gardening Keeping your garden healthy and looking good can be challenging when you only visit a few months a year. Many properties purchased on new developments have no laid out garden and resale properties may have been empty for some time and any garden that existed is often very overgrown and neglected.

The Challenges for the Holiday Gardener: 1. The time that can be allocated to developing a garden to suit your planed lifestyle while in Spain is limited. Visits may not be when the most spectacular plants are in flower or in fruit.

2. As the garden evolves the extent of maintenance required during the first few days of each visit increases.

3. If thirsty plants are selected the water bill will be relatively large in relation to the weeks in which the garden is enjoyed even with a timer controlled irrigation system.

So from day one gardens need to be designed for minimum maintenance and water bills, to be Spanish in character and with maximum colour, perfume and fruit crops at the times of year the owner plans to be in residence.

If you are in the above situation, or intend to be within a year or two, try following these practical guidelines to ensure that you enjoy your holidays as well as evolving your garden.

1. Aim initially for a simple design that can be laid out fairly quickly and within your capabilities. More

complex features can be added later.

2. Don’t waste effort trying to dig over and de-rubble the total site. This is not necessary where you plan to lay down paths and terraces, or build raised beds or a rockery.

3. Aim to lay a safe network of paths and terrace areas as soon as possible.

Recognise that a heavy storm can soon change rock hard soil into quick sands of clinging red clay. For speedy safe clean paths and terraces lay stone chippings over black plastic to stabilise areas for eating out and taking siestas.

4. Divide the garden into a number of areas and first complete those areas most seen and best for summer shade and winter sun.

5. Limit early plantings to hedges, trees for shade, a perpetual lemon tree for gin and tonics and some of the more drought and frost resistant plants.

6. Pots, aesthetic ornaments and fountains can be as pleasing, stimulating and restful as plants and

require less maintenance.

7. Very early on provide for al-fresco cooking and eating so as to enjoy an open air life style from day one – even if it’s just a BBQ. 8. Before you plant anything improve the soil in areas intended for flower beds, trees and eventually a vegetable garden. Work in copious amounts of animal manures, bagged organic manures, composts or the outputs from an early compost heap.

9. When you get round to planting things dig large planting holes and work a little water absorbing/retaining gel such as ‘ TerraCottem’ into the earth/compost at the bottom of planting holes.

10. Mulch around all plants with stone chippings or wood chippings laid over woven plastic sheeting to deter weeds.

11. Install a simple irrigation system operated by a battery timer. But remember to change the battery regularly.

Spain fighting a not­so­silent killer Noise pollution causes 16,600 premature deaths and 72,000 hospital admissions a year in Europe, according to the European Environment Agency.

The main culprit is road traffic – which is also mainly to blame for the carbon dioxide emissions that cause 10,000 premature deaths in Spain a year, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, sleeping disorders, cognitive impairment and tinnitus or deafness, are all diseases directly related to noise pollution.

Research has also identified a link between noise and problems during pregnancy, obesity and diabetes. In fact, noise pollution adversely affects almost half the population of Europe during the day and around a third at night.

As with air pollution, it is impossible to determine if an individual case has been caused specifically by noise, given there is usually a number of contributory factors.

Consequently, scientists rely on

epidemiological analysis of large populations to draw conclusions. But when a person exposed to excessive noise over a prolonged period of time experiences a specific set of symptoms, noise pollution may well be playing an important role.

Around 13 million Europeans

who suffer from sleep disorders due to excessive noise. The manner in which noise pollution affects our health is becoming increasingly recognized.

In October 2018, the WHO published a new guide on noise based on scientific studies that lowered the threshold of what is considered to be safe exposure to noise. It recommends levels below 53 decibels during the day and 45 decibels at night with regard to road traffic, which is the most common

source of noise pollution.

María Foraster, one of the authors of the WHO guide and a researcher at the ISGlobal health institute, financed by the LaCaixa Foundation, explains that new studies – such as the noise maps that municipalities with populations of more than 100,000 have to publish every five years – will bring more accurate data. She adds that reducing noise means reducing the traffic in cities: “There is a double advantage, because this also stops air pollution,” she says.

“Ideally, we would plan cities where there are no urban areas near roads used by cars, cities where there are quiet spaces. In those areas that already exist, barriers can be put up, preferably natural ones, as these are more beneficial, but it is not always easy.”

Foraster supports initiatives such as the lowemissions zone Madrid Central, which made 472 hectares of the city centre off-limits to traffic, apart from local residents and public transportation, and the plan to create supermanzanas, or mega residential blocks, in Barcelona.

She constantly interferes

Why doesn't he compliment me?

I get upset when my husband doesn't notice me. He rarely gives compliments and doesn't seem to notice if I look nice any more. I am middle aged now and menopausal. To my horror I find that middle aged spread is a very real thing. Damn these hormones! I find I need reassurance more than ever. I am still slim and not bad looking for my age. Why doesn’t he say I look nice, when I go to so much effort?

Since the birth of our baby daughter my mother in law constantly interferes. She will say ‘that’s not the way we used to do it’. I know it annoys my husband too but he hasn’t said anything to her yet. It’s getting worse and she wrote down all her ‘tips’ the other day and gave me a list of dos and don'ts. I am coming to the end of my tether and feel I will snap if something isn’t said, but I do feel it my husband’s place to say something.

It might be your husband’s place to say something but up to now, he hasn’t. You could ask him to have a quiet, calm word with his mum, or next time she offers her opinion rather than say nothing, thank her and say that her suggestions have been taken on board, but you’d like to try your own way right now. Some of her suggestions might even be good ones, and it may help for you to take her advice every now and again to diffuse the situation. It’s all about give and take.

You've heard the saying, ‘men are from mars: women are from venus?’, well they are different from us girls who routinely comment on each others appearance and offer compliments readily. Maybe we do this because we know how we feel when it is well received.

A kind word in the right place can make someone's day. Are we asking too much from our men? Possibly.

However, lads - if you want to keep us girls happy, just a ‘you look lovely’ every now and then works wonders.

Pedro Sánchez is now officially president of Spain and King Felipe VI has signed the paperwork giving his Royal assent to the appointment. The PSOE's (socialists') coalition partners, leftists Podemos, had struck a deal with Sánchez 24 hours after the elections on 10th November – despite these elections having been held as a result of the two parties' failing to reach an agreement after Spain went to the polls in April – and will now form an active part of the new government, including running ministries.

Full details of appointments will be revealed over the next few days.

Podemos' leader, Pablo Iglesias, burst into tears of relief and joy when Sánchez made it through the second round of Parliamentary voting with 167 in favour and 165 against.

In the first round, Sánchez needed an outright majority of MPs to vote in his favour – 176 out of 350 – which, until four or five years ago, was normally straightforward as one of the two main parties would always achieve a majority of seats in a general election.

Nowadays, with more parties on the scene, a hung Parliament is normally guaranteed, meaning the presidential candidate has to negotiate with all the opposition outfits to convince them to vote in his favour.

If – as was the case with Sánchez – the first round failed to provide a majority in his support, the candidate goes through to a second round 48 hours later, in which he needs only a simple majority, or more 'yes' than 'no' votes.

Here, the key is convincing those MPs who do not support the candidate's presidential bid to abstain, so that the 'yes' total surpasses the 'no' total.

In the revote, 18 MPs – from the

Catalunya Left Republicans (ERC) and the Basque reunification party EH Bildu – abstained in accordance with their recent agreement following negotiations with the PSOE. Votes in favour came from the PSOE's own 120 MPs and the 35 Podemos has, plus the two members of Podemos breakaway group Más País! who had won seats in the November elections.

Valencian regional party Compromís, centrist Nueva Canarias, provincial party Teruel Existe, and the Galicia national party BNG – each with one seat in Parliament – voted in favour of Sánchez, as did all six MPs from the Basque National Party (PNV).

Votes against came from the PSOE's direct rivals, the rightwing PP, with 88 MPs; centreright Ciudadanos, with 10 MPs; far-right Vox, with 52; Catalunya separatists Junts Per Catalunya (JxCat) with eight; the Navarrabased coalition UPN, with two; pro-secession Catalunya-based outfit CUP, with two; the Asturian Forum (Foro Asturiano), with one; the Canarian Coalition, with one; and the Cantabria Regional Party's sole MP, despite his having pledged his support of Sánchez on the night of 10th November.

The margin was extremely narrow, at 165 to 167, but enough to give Spain an elected left-wing government for the first time since November 2011, and for Sánchez to swear allegiance in the presence of the King.

Sánchez has in fact been in power, either de facto or in a caretaking position, since June 2018 after the PSOE's noconfidence vote against the then PP government prospered – but with the PSOE's holding just 86 seats in Parliament out

of the total of 350, the smallest minority ever to lead the country, Sánchez and his cabinet found their hands tied.

When they were unable to secure enough support to pass their 2019 budget, Sánchez opted to call a general election to strengthen his mandate – especially in light of right-wing supporters' public outcry at having an 'unelected president'.

This election was held in April, but with the PSOE and Podemos unable to compromise sufficiently to reach a coalition deal or to persuade Podemos to vote in Sánchez's favour, the second round of the investiture failed and Sánchez was forced to call a repeat election.

Stability Now, after four general elections in as many years, over eight months with a caretaking government, 10 months with an extreme minority government, and a period of nearly 12 months with the PP in a caretaking position – giving barely 18 months of four years with a stable leadership for Spain – the country finally has political stability and decisions can be made, budgets signed off, and electoral manifestos turned into reality.

As was the case when the PP was forced to call a second general election in summer 2016 following a fragmented result in November 2015, many parties which do not share the values of the current president and his cabinet opted to allow him to take over the reins of the country for the sake of stability.

This is the first time in Spain's democratic history that the country has been led by a coalition government with a deputy president, Pablo Iglesias.

Spain makes Forbes Top 10 It's stating the obvious to say Spain is one of the top choices for northern Europeans seeking warmer climates for their retirement – excellent healthcare, free at the point of access to all residents, fabulous food, a lower cost of living than most countries above the Pyrénées and several below them, mild winters, balmy springs and autumns and sun-drenched summers, idyllic beaches, beautiful scenery, and – depending upon what you're seeking – there's plenty of choice between cosmopolitan communities where you'll meet people of your own nationality and others, or where you're completely immersed in Spanish society, or where you're on the cusp of both and can choose between them as the mood takes you.

Of course, chances are if your reading the Costa Blanca People you live or holiday here, you love Spain too but it may interest you to know that Forbes magazine has just published its Top 10 Retirement Destinations, and not only is Spain in it, but three places in the list are on Spanish soil, and it's the only country with more than one destination mentioned. What’s surprising though, is that two of these are off the traditional tourist trail...

In Spain, the 'possibility of outdoor activities' and 'sunny beaches' described in many of Hugely-popular retirement destinations in Spain have long included the Canary and Balearic Islands, the Costa Blanca, and more recently, the coast of the Murcia Region; the Costa Cálida. Although none of these appear in

the top 10.

The Forbes ranking presents three vastly different areas for future homes, offering completely diverse panoramas and lifestyles, appealing to a wide range of personal values, comfort zones and desires.

The Costa del Sol, with over 1.3 million inhabitants, is probably mainland Spain's most popular tourist destination for foreigners seeking beaches and warm weather, and very high number of its

expats? Forbes includes the lesserknown Costa de Azahar in its top 10, the coast of the eastern province of Castellón, sandwiched between the region of Catalunya and the province of Valencia.

Just over an hour's drive or train ride from Valencia city – the third-largest in Spain, with 786,000 inhabitants, a spectacularly-colourful fiesta week in March known as the Fallas, beautiful classical architecture, and very safe – a

world-famous FIB International music festival – Spain's answer to Glastonbury, so an ideal carrot if you're trying to convince your grandchildren to come and visit – and Forbes also recommends its neighbours, Torreblanca, Benicarló, La Llosa, and Oropesa del Mar. The third Spanish destination Forbes lists is Bilbao, in the Basque Country, as one of the top places to retire. If city life is for you, but without going to the extremes of living in a crowded capital,

residents in the main holiday hotspots are British and Irish nationals.

The demographic tends to be slightly younger, meaning more Brits and Irish of working age, which translates into a greater number of services and facilities run by English-speakers.

Forbes specifically recommends the Costa del Sol hubs of Puerto Banús, Nerja, Marbella, Benalmádena, Fuengirola, Estepona, Nueva Andalucía, Manilva, and Mijas.

Want to retire to the coast, but without the British bars and hordes of UK nationals, and yet with a decent standard of infrastructure geared up to European

stone's throw from endless countryside and remote forgotten-in-time villages, less than two hours from the ski slopes in the province of Teruel, very Mediterranean in landscape and feel, but at present largely undiscovered by British tourists, the Costa de Azahar's 120 kilometres of shoreline gets some of the best weather in mainland Spain and is quieter and 'more Spanish' than the Costa del Sol. Peñíscola is popular with residents hundreds of kilometres away for a weekend break, especially with its stunning castle (featured in Game of Thrones); Benicàssim is home to the

Final year to change the €1.6bn in Pesetas still out there Anyone who still has some of the €1.61 billion in pesetas in coins and notes in their homes needs to change them into euros before the end of this year – or they will be stuck with them, according to the Bank of Spain.

Notes minted after 1939 – the final year of the Civil War in which dictator General Franco came into power, a reign ended by his death in 1975 – can automatically be changed by the Bank of Spain, the only entity able to do so. Any notes issued between 1936 and 1939 inclusive can also be exchanged, but Bank of Spain experts need to analyse them first, so it will not be an instant process. As for coins, only those which were still in circulation as at New Year's Day 2002 can be exchanged.

Coins that can be changed for euros include collectors' and limited edition commemorative versions.

This said, the Bank of Spain recommends anyone who still owns peseta coins and notes

show them to a collector first, since certain editions can be worth tens or even hundreds of euros. They do not even need to be historic or antique – some peseta coins from as recently as 1995 can attract upwards of €100, and certain coins from the mid to late 1940s have fetched between €10,500 and €36,000 on auction sites.

This is clearly not the case with all peseta coins, only with certain ones that are considered highly-collectible, but as the description of these is long and often includes surprisingly ordinary-looking versions, it is always worth consulting a collector.

Of course, it is unlikely all, or even the majority of the €1.61 million in pesetas still in circulation will be exchanged

before the end of 2020 – many are held in boxes, purses and attics, in quantities worth barely a couple of cents, by holidaymakers who visited Spain during the 66 years between the 1936 versions and the last ones minted before the currency changed to euros, as souvenirs.

Spain adopted the euro at the beginning of 2002, although initially it ran parallel with the peseta. In the first year, many small businesses had problems giving customers change, even for smaller notes, because the physical currency available nationwide was limited.

Although there were widespread complaints of price inflation – as traders would often change their 100-peseta labels for €1.00 tags, effectively increasing buyer costs by around a third – Spanish authorities, businesses and the general public adapted very well and very quickly to using the common currency of the European Union.

Spain as you think you know it – and it's a short trip to San Sebastián with its famous, idyllic La Concha beach.

Summers are much milder in the Basque Country – you still get the sun and it's still plenty hot enough, but without the intensity of the south and Mediterranean coasts, nor the suffocating humidity.

Medical care Overall, Navarra, the Basque Country, Aragón and Asturias are the regions with the best medical care in the country, based upon the World Health Organisation's research into diagnostic testing, number of doctors and nurses per inhabitant, spending on pharmaceutical drugs, waiting lists, and bed availability.

It's also one of the cheaper cities to live in, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INE) – Bilbao is not one of the top 10 most expensive metropolitan areas in Spain, despite the fact that the region's other two provincial capitals, San Sebastián and Vitoria, cost nearly 30 percent and 7 percent more than the national average to live in respectively.

Out of all of Spain's provincial capitals, Bilbao ranks eighth for quality of life, according to the Valencian Institute of Economic Research (IVIE), but would rank higher still if quality of life and living costs were combined, and it comes 12th in Spain for the best socio-economic conditions.

Bilbao's cuisine is exceptional – it is largely based upon fish, particularly cod, due to the long-standing fishing tradition in the Bay of Biscay.

Welcome to the wonderful world of homeownership in Spain!

It’s a great feeling knowing you’ve made it on the Spanish property ladder, however do you know the basics when it comes down to minor home mainte-nance? You may already be a homeowner in another country, however there are a few things that you may not be familiar with in a Spanish home.

Here are 5 maintenance skills, that every Spanish homeowner should know:

Electrics. In every property you’ll see on the wall, (usually in the lounge) a box that contains the circuit breakers. Learn how to reset them yourself. The main breaker will have a single switch with a small button inset to the side. If you ever find yourself with no power in the house, always check the circuit breaker first before calling an electrician or your electric company. All breakers must be in the “up” position..

Water. Once you move into your newly purchased casa, learn where the water shut-off tap is located. It’s usually in the bathroom, kitchen or utility room.

. Unclogging drains. A chemical drain cleaner may work, however you can also use long wire. To clear a bad smell, add a couple of teaspoons

Shutters. If you have roller shutters, they can be delicate, so don’t pull on the cord with all your strength to raise them. Pulling them up too quickly can cause the cord to break, or the slats can become dislodged. If you find they are becoming difficult to raise, remove the panel above the window to expose the slats, then make sure they are all lined up properly.

If some are broken, you can buy the individual slats and replacement cord from your local Ferreteria.

What’s in store for the property market?

There’s no denying the fact that Spain is a safe choice when it comes to real estate investments. And the numbers have been clearly backing that up during the past years. That is why many foreigners decide to buy a property in the country; being in Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia on the coast or in any of the other amazing Spanish loaations.

But will the favourable conditions of the sector be the same during the next year? Will the trend we have been experiencing during 2018 and 2019 still hold? Lets look at the expert predictions...

Continued growth Since the big impact of the 2008 crisis, the Spanish property market hasn’t stopped growing. In overall terms, the sector is still experiencing a new booming after the one that preceded the crisis. And that is really important to note down, as the construction sector, along with tourism, are the main industries that hold the Spanish economy.

According to TINSA, real estate prices have increased by 3.8 percent during the first 10 months of 2019. Even if we take into consideration the deceleration, the property market will still continue growing and offer really interesting opportunities for foreigner investors during the next year.

Construction fuels the market During 2020 new constructions will still be the main type fuelling the growth of the sector. During the economic crisis, many areas that were about to start

being constructed suddenly stopped due to a lack of resources and bankruptcies.

However, with this new boom we have been experiencing during the past couple of years, these have come to life again.

Hundreds and hundreds of flats have been built during the past 3 years, leading to the creation of new blocks, residential areas, and shops. An overall new life is being created in areas that were nearly deserted before.

And this type of constructions will be the ones leading the economic growth of the property market. Even though second-hand properties will also experience an increase in prices, it will be these new constructions the ones more affected.

Costal is key If you are not considering investing but just want to settle in the country and find the best possible house, coastal areas will be where you need to focus your attention on. They are the ideal alternative if you are planning to buy a first or second (holiday) home.

Valencia is not only a good place to invest but also to live in. But you can still go down following the Mediterranean sea and find equally optimal cities; especially the ones on the Costa Blanca.

This last area is the preferred choice for many Scandinavians, Frenchs, Belgians, and Dutch citizens as well as English and Irish.

That is why Brexit can create many uncertainties on how it can impact the real estate market.

Nevertheless, there is no need to worry. It is almost clear that the small slowdown that property prices will experience during 2020 is not caused by Brexit but due to other factors. The process did not affect market prices during 2018-2019, so there’s no reason to think otherwise in the future.

Even more, it could be that this Brexit uncertainty benefits the industry. This is because when things are not clear or there is a perceived risk, real estate seems to be the safest investment choice.

Nevertheless, many still fear the additional legal procedures any UK citizen must embark on if they finally leave the EU in order to buy a house in Spain. And many others who are in the middle of the process are also afraid of

what will happen to their current transaction.

But that shouldn’t be a problem. First of all, because all the rights that have been already granted will not be taken away – this has been agreed by the Spanish government.

And, additionally, as there will be a transitory period of 2 years after the UK leaves the European Union, so there will be enough time for the market to adjust.

Slow and complicated If you are planning to buy a house in Spain, the process will be still slow (even though not as slow as it was before) and many foreigner buyers will continue to experienced a certain degree of trouble when buying their Spanish property. It is common for issues along the way to slows the process down. This is why in 2020 patience will continue to be a key skill, especially when considering the low level of protection buyers experience in Spain.

Understanding how the real estate process works in Spain will be crucial to avoid problems. Common issues include outstanding debts on the property, that the property has been built without the proper licences or the builder has financing issues – although hopefully most of these are historic problems and one a good legal representative will be able to avoid. A professional real estate lawyer that can guide you step by step is vital. It is especially advisable to employ one that speaks Spanish and English, as you really want to understand what is written on the contract.

Writers' Ink Spot The weekly short story by Writers' Ink, a dedicated and rapidly expanding group of internationally published and non-published writers who take pleasure in helping and encouraging each other and members of our wider international circle. We meet on the second Monday of each month at 11am in the 'Friendly' Bar, CC Citrus, La Florida, Costa Blanca South. We are more than happy to welcome new budding writers, experienced published Authors or anyone who has an interest in writing to our group.

“Found a young man yet, miss?” he grinned as he said the same words every day to the pretty young girl who’d come and share the only bench in the park with him at exactly four in the afternoon.

“No! Don’t be silly, I don’t want a young man!” She’d shrug as she harrumphed herself on the far end of the bench and read the book she always brought. A few minutes passed, then quietly she’d murmur, “You say that every time.”

“I know,” his eyes twinkled, “just wonderin’ an all.” It was his stock reply then he’d reach down and pull up a blade of grass to chew on.

After this they sat in silence, she with her book and he contemplating the sky, watching the geese as they flew north forming that beautiful cursive vee across the heavens.

Ah, spring! Beautiful. So much hope.

Summer came and not much more was said. He still had his blade of grass and she, her book. The cherry trees had lost their blossoms and their branches were laden with fruit.

She always left first, at exactly five o’clock, looked at him and said, “Good evening then.” In the 1950s there wasn’t much else that a young woman said to a strange man whose name she didn’t know. He’d raise his cap to her in silence.

The leaves on the trees changed. The geese flew south. The sun was as fitful as a fever and the winds sent chill messages down his neck and up her skirt. It was halfway through November and as before she said her last “Good evening then.” He raised his cap one last time before the next spring when their silent communion would start again, he with his, “Found a young man yet, miss?” and his grin, she with her “Don’t be silly,” and harrumphing as she sat on the bench.

The Park Bench by Rohini Sunderarm She’d grown slender and dressed more smartly. Sometimes she wore shoes with a slightly higher heel, that spring she’d sported an elegant tan Macintosh with a bright red cap and matching lipstick. He was much the same. The reliably cocky grin. But the hand reaching for the grass now had sinews and was tanned. She’d glance sideways at him and smile; then there was that comfortable fifty minutes they spent not saying anything to each other at all. She with her book he with his blade of grass.

Summer. Autumn. Another spring. She returned. He waited for her now his stomach tight in anticipation. A minute past four, she arrived with her constant book and her equally reliable, “Don’t be silly, I don’t want a young man.” His relief. The blade of grass. The sky. The geese. All was right with the world.

It was the middle of June; four on the clock plus forty seconds, he heard her feet tapping down the path to the bench, he looked up, there was no book in her hand.

His stomach did a turn, he continued, “Found a young man yet, miss?” Only the grin didn’t come so easily and when he forced his mouth into a smile, it didn’t reach his eyes.

She sat down on the park bench, no harrumphing; it was a smooth elegant movement. She looked at him, “Yes,” she said searching his eyes. And he, clenching his teeth, bunching his fists; long moments before he hoarsely whispered, “Why miss I wish you luck

then and may you always find happiness.” The words almost caught in his throat and he couldn’t think why he had any right to anything more. But she’d come to tell him and that was enough. He could live on that. When he looked up she was gone. There was nothing but a blade of grass on the bench in the space that had once been between them.

He picked it up and threw it. It blew away on the summer breeze. The sun mocked him and the cherry trees waved farewell. How dare the sky look so blue! He kicked the bench it skewed groaning to the side. He flung his cap, threw himself on the grass and let the tears flow. When he arose it was exactly five o’clock.

Summer passed. Autumn, another spring, so many springs. Why did he keep come back here every day after work at exactly four in the afternoon?

Other people shared his bench; it wasn’t the same.

The colours faded from the park around him. His eyes grew dimmer. His cocky grin disappeared, only the blade of grass in his teeth remained. His nutbrown hair was streaked with silver and his memories strayed to other years. He was unaware of those around him. His constant visit to the park bench seemed pointless, yet he always returned.

“Silly ol’ man,” he heard the children say as they walked past. Then one day late in November the sky had turned a steely grey, but the rain hadn’t started

yet when a lady from the city turned up and sat next to him. She had a book in her hand and wore those horn-rimmed glasses that all the fashionable ladies were wearing now in the late 1970s.

Her dark hair was pulled into a bun and heavily streaked with silver. He peered at her cautiously then looked away. It couldn’t be, no, she was so slender and slight and this one, she was much heavier, and yet there was something.

Then she whispered, “Did you never find a young woman, then?”

His stomach flipped, it was his turn to say, “Don’t be silly, I don’t want a young woman, I only ever wanted you.”

Population boom The population in Spain increased by 303,228 people in 2018, according to figures just released and with all except four regions gaining more inhabitants.

Only the northern coastal regions and Asturias and Galicia, the landlocked western region of Extremadura, and the centre-northern territory of Castilla y León saw a decline in their headcount.

Census figures are only gathered, analysed and published for a given year when the following year is nearly, but not quite, over, meaning the numbers for 2018 are considered to be the most recent – those for 2019 will

be released in the last few days of December 2020.

During the worst of the financial crisis, Spain's population declined year upon year, but has started to climb again, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

The provinces, and single-province regions, which have gained the most inhabitants – over 12 percent - since 2010 are the Balearic Islands, Almería, Málaga, Madrid, and the southern Basque province of Álava, of which the capital is Vitoria. Those whose headcount has remained approximately the same are Ciudad Real, Valencia, Tarragona, Lleida,

Zaragoza, and La Rioja.

All the coastal provinces of Andalucía – or the entire region except Córdoba and Jaén – have seen a population increase since 2010, as have the provinces of Barcelona, Girona, all those in the Basque Country, Navarra, Toledo, the Canary Islands, and the Spanish-owned cityprovinces of Ceuta and Melilla, on the northern Moroccan coast.

Since 2010, provinces which have lost around 2 percent to 4 percent of their headcount include Castellón, Alicante, Huesca, Guadalajara, all of Extremadura, all of Galicia, Cantabria, Albacete, Córdoba, Jaén and León, with the main population exodus seen in the land-locked provinces in the north-west, plus Teruel (Aragón) and Cuenca (Castilla-La Mancha, sandwiched between Valencia and Madrid).

But in 2018 alone, the Comunidad Valenciana – made up of the provinces of Alicante, Valencia and Castellón – saw the third-highest climb in resident numbers, by 40,066, to a total of just over five million, of whom 786,000 live in its largest city, Valencia.

Andalucía witnessed the fourthlargest hike, to just over 8.4 million, with 29,832 more.

Madrid, with 6.7 million inhabitants, grew the most, with 85,315 additional names on the census, and Catalunya's population as at the end of 2018 stood

at nearly 7.7 million, with 75,152 additional residents.

Exactly a year, minus one day, ago, Spain's population broke the 47 million barrier once again – it was registered as 47,026,208, compared with the total of 46,722,980 on New Year's Eve 2017.

Asturias lost 5,444 names from its census in 2018, giving the region a total of 1.02 million, whilst Castilla y León shrunk by 9,616, to just under 2.4 million.

In practice, given that population statistics are calculated according to the number of people registered on the padrón, or town headcount census – different from the electoral roll – in some cases, this may not reflect a rise in inhabitants.

It is likely that the number of British nationals on record has slightly increased, or possibly will even more so by the time 2019 figures are released, due to an ongoing campaign by the British embassy in Spain to encourage UK nationals to get themselves registered to ensure they retain as many rights as possible postBrexit.

The next couple of years could, conversely, see the number of British nationals decline on paper – a significant minority have voiced their intentions of, or at least the fact that they are considering, obtaining Spanish citizenship as a precaution.

An indeterminate number of people live in Spain but have never registered on the padrón, and may now only just have done so; also, some do not bother to de-register when they leave, meaning they could be on more than one padrón or show up as being resident when they have in fact left the country.

Anecdotal evidence points to the fact that the vast majority of Brits living in Spain intend to stay put after Brexit, and Spain is concerned to ensure that they are able to do so, that future emigrants from the UK will not be put off, and that British tourists continue to make the country their number one holiday choice.

Extremadura reduced by 5,153 to just under 1.07 million, and Galicia lost 2,244 inhabitants, falling to just below 2.7 million.

Ceuta is home to 84,777 people, or 367 fewer than at the end of 2017, whilst Melilla has 86,487 residents, after growing by 103 people.

Shocking new drama White House Farm has begun airing and tells the chilling story of the real-life murders that shocked the UK. The sixpart series chronicles the events that took place in 1985 and is set in the idyllic English countryside in Essex. The small village of Tolleshunt D'Arcy is rocked by the news that a couple, their daughter and two grandchildren have been found shot dead at their family home and the only surviving member of their family is their son, Jeremy.

The case dominated the headlines for months and this is the first time a television drama has centred on the story. Here's the true story behind the programme...

Retired RAF pilot Nevill Bamber and his wife June lived together on a 300acre farmland in the village of Tolleshunt D'Arcy, Essex. They were unable to conceive naturally so adopted their children, Sheila and Jeremy, when they were babies. The two siblings were

not biologically related to each other. As they hit teenhood Jeremy also had a history with robbery and theft, while Sheila had been diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenia.

Jeremy was working on the farm prior to their deaths and Shelia's two sons, Daniel and Nicholas Caffell, had gone to stay with their mother at Nevill and June's farmhouse for a week as part of their summer holiday.

The episode, and the case, begins with Jeremy's panicked phone call to Chelmsford Police Station in the early hours of 7th August, 1985. The 24-yearold claimed he has received a phone call from Nevill, saying his sister Sheila had "gone crazy" with a gun before the line cut out.

Officers questioned Jeremy, who spoke calmly, outside the house, and asked him if Sheila would “go berserk” with a gun, to which he responded: “I don't really know. She is a nutter. She's

been having treatment.”

When they entered the house, officers found Jeremy’s father Nevill in the kitchen – where there had been signs of a struggle – June and Sheila in the couple’s bedroom and Daniel and Nicholas dead in their beds.

When Detective Chief Inspector Thomas "Taff" Jones first examined the crime scene, he believed there had been a murder-suicide, with Sheila killing her children and parents before shooting herself. However, the family had been shot multiple times and Sheila had been shot twice.

A month after the funerals, on 7th September, Jeremy’s ex-girlfriend Julie Mugford, rang the authorities and said she had omitted details from her original statement. In her original report, according to court papers, she said “nothing adverse to the appellant.

[Julie] spoke of receiving a telephone call from him at about 3.30 am on the

night of the killings.

"She said that he ‘sounded disjointed and worried’ and he said ‘There's something wrong at home.’ She had been sleepy and had not asked what it was.”

But in her second statement, she said when she and Bamber first met it became obvious that he disliked his family and made several references to killing them. She added that he rang her the night before the murders, saying he was annoyed and had been thinking about the crime all day and that it was going to be "tonight or never".

He then called Julie in the early hours of the morning and said: "Everything is going well. Something is wrong at the farm. I haven't had any sleep all night … bye honey and I love you lots," but she had not taken him seriously.

She later asked him if he had committed the murders, and Jeremy said he hadn’t but arranged for a friend

of his, Matthew MacDonald, to kill his family.

Jeremy and Matthew were arrested.

Matthew was later found to not have been at the farm that evening and gave evidence during the trial which was not disputed. Jeremy was interviewed for three days, during which he maintained his innocence, denied the confession and talk of wanting to kill his family, while claiming Julie was lying because he jilted her. He was then re-arrested on 29th September and charged with the five murders.

Jeremy has consistently maintained his innocence over the years and his lawyers have tried to challenge the evidence given in court, but have not been successful. He also tried to claim compensation from his remaining family members after being cut out of his grandmother’s will following his conviction.

Grand Tour bosses want new spin­off ‘The Grand Tour' bosses want to make a spin-off without the original hosts.

The motoring show's producer Andy Wilman has plans to temporarily replace Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May with some special guests for a range of one-off episodes.

Speaking to the media, he said: "I'd love to do a specialised show under 'The Grand Tour' banner. 'The Grand Tour' with... blah doing blah. I don't

know who blah is.

"Say, Brian Johnson from AC/DC. He's a car nut, I love him. But that's not our call, that's Amazon. All those things are fanciful but I'll do them."

However, the producer would only offer the spin-off as special episodes as he knows loyal fans tune in to watch the top trio in action.

He explained: "They are the show.

Shows such as 'I'm A Celebrity' or 'The Apprentice', the format or title of the

show is probably bigger than the cast.

So, you can have spin-offs because you're talking about that format.

"There's no plan for a series because this ultimately is 'Last of The Summer Wine' in action, three men bumbling their way through the world."

Meanwhile, Jeremy - who is a longtime pal of Andy - is to front a new farming show for Amazon Prime.

The working title of 'I Bought The Farm' will see the television presenter

attempt to run his own 1000-acre working farm in the British countryside.

However, though he isn't planning to help Hammond or May with their solo projects, the veteran producer admitted he is willing to give Jeremy a hand.

He said: "I'm going to help Jeremy with 'I Bought The Farm' in the edit, because [that] dynamic we've had forever and a day, but I wouldn't go Andy Wilman near the other ones."

Meghan and Harry quit The Queen and Prince Charles were left in the dark about the timing of Prince Harry and Meghan’s statement that they intended to quit royal duties. Harry and Meghan did not consult the Queen or Prince Charles before making their shock statement about ‘stepping back’ from royal life, it has emerged. Senior members of the Royal Family are said to be disappointed and ‘hurt’ at the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s decision to quit their current roles and gain financial independence.

The pair said they will now split their time between the UK and North America ‘while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen’. The mood at Buckingham Palace was said to be ‘one of disappointment’ while the BBC has reported senior royals as being ‘hurt’ by the announcement. It is understood Harry and Meghan had just begun talks with the Queen and Charles about their future roles when they made their decision to go public, posting their shock statement on Instagram.

Buckingham Palace responded to the news with its own statement saying: ‘Discussions with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are at an early stage. ‘We understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work through.’ It’s understood the Queen was only recently informed of Harry and Meghan’s future plans and was not aware the statement was due to be issued.

A huge motivation for the couple was their eight-month-old baby Archie, who they said they wished to raise ‘with an

appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter’.

The move comes less than two years after their marriage at St George’s Chapel in the grounds of Windsor Castle in May 2018. Since then, both Harry and Meghan have faced harsh criticism over their use of private jets – taking four in 11 days last summer. They have also been slammed for spending £2.4m of public money on the refurbishment of Frogmore Cottage, their Berkshire home, where it is understood they will continue to spend half their time when in the UK. Meghan, a former actress, lived and worked in Toronto during her time starring in the popular US drama Suits, and the couple were famously pictured together when Meghan joined her thenboyfriend Harry at the 2017 Invictus Games in the city. The cost of security for the couple would also be an issue, and as Canada is a realm, a country where the Queen is head of state, it may have to pay for keeping the couple and their son Archie safe.

The couple’s aim to be ‘financially independent’ may point towards them seeking a job, or a paid role with an organisation whose aims complement their own beliefs. Other members of the monarchy who have salaried jobs include the Queen’s grandchildren Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie and Peter Phillips, who all work. Both the Duke and Duchess openly admitted struggling with the pressures of royal life in a candid TV interview last year. In the ITV documentary filmed during their trip to Southern Africa, they spoke about the pressures they have been facing as well as family rifts.

This week, we share a variety of ways to serve a tuna steak – a hot, pan seared tuna steak served with couscous, a fresh tuna tortilla wrap which is perfect for lunch or a light dinner and finally, tuna burgers – a great alternative to red meat and the perfect choice for a tasty evening meal.

TUNA WRAPS

Ingredients 1 tbsp sunflower oil 2 large tuna steaks pinch cayenne pepper 1 tsp ground cumin 4 soft tortillas 1 avocado, sliced 2 tomatoes, sliced juice 1 lime handful coriander, chopped soured cream, to serve (optional) Method 1.Rub oil over each steak, then sprinkle with the

spices. Heat a griddle pan until hot, then cook the steaks on one side for 2 mins. Turn and cook for 1-2 mins more. Cut into strips.

2.Heat the tortillas for 30 secs in a microwave until soft. Pile tuna, avocado and tomatoes on top of each, then squeeze over the lime juice and scatter with coriander.

Dollop soured cream on top, if you like, then roll up and eat.

HOT MUSTARD TUNA STEAK WITH COUSCOUS Ingredients 1 red onion, halved and finely sliced The zest and juice of 1 lemon, plus wedges to serve 1 tbsp olive oil, plus extra for brushing 400ml hot vegetable stock 250g couscous 4 tuna steaks, about 140g/5oz each 2 tsp English mustard powder bunch flat-leaf parsley, roughly chopped 2 tbsp capers (available in Mercadona – look for a jar of Alcaparras en Vinagre) Method 1.Put the onion, lemon zest, juice and 1 tbsp oil into a small bowl, add

salt and pepper to taste, then leave to soak for 5 mins until the onion has softened a little. Pour the hot stock over the couscous in a large bowl, cover with cling film and leave for 10 mins until the stock has been absorbed.

2.Season the tuna steaks, brush with oil, then pat the mustard powder over both sides. Once the couscous is ready, add the parsley and capers to the onions, stir well, then mix into the couscous with a fork.

Heat a griddle pan and sear the tuna for 1 min on each side until medium-rare. Serve the tuna with the couscous and lemon wedges on the side.

Ingredients 200g fresh tuna steak 1 garlic clove, finely chopped small knob fresh ginger, peeled and finely chopped 1 tbsp soy sauce handful coriander leaves, chopped 1 tbsp sunflower oil burger buns, lettuce leaves, sliced tomato and avocado, to serve Method 1.Chop the tuna into small chunks, then carry on chopping until the tuna is

roughly minced. Tip the tuna into a bowl and mix with the garlic, ginger, soy sauce and coriander.

Shape into two burgers, place on a plate, then freeze for 10 mins to firm up.

2.Heat the oil in a non-stick frying pan, then cook the burgers for 1-2 mins on each side or until done to your liking. Serve the burgers in toasted buns with lettuce, tomato and avocado.

Beware hidden sugar in foods in Veganuary Those doing Veganuary may want to be careful of food they grab “on the go”. Vegan “fast food” available on the high street can contain up to four times more sugar than non plant-based options.

A favourite among foodies, Pret’s vegan Very Berry Croissant is packed with 21.9g of the sweet stuff, equivalent to five teaspoons of sugar. This is four teaspoons more than its classic French Butter Croissant, which contains 4.5g of sugar.

A record quarter of a million people worldwide took part in Veganuary last year, whether for or environmental health, financial reasons, more and more of us are cutting out meat and dairy.

While ditching butter, cream and steak may sound good for our waistlines, research by marketing agency JBH reveals vegan food can be higher in sugar, salt and calories.

Subway’s Meatless Meatball Marinara may sound like it delivers a taste of Italy, but it contains 19.3g of sugar, 3.6g of salt and 558 calories. Sandwich fans may be better sticking to the original Meatball Sub, which has 13.5g of sugar, 1.9g of salt and 438 calories.

It does, however, contain more

fat than its vegan alternative at 16.2g compared to 12.3g.

Chicken Nugget fans may be pleased to hear McDonalds now does Veggies Dippers.

Don’t be fooled into thinking their healthier, however, with the alternative plant-based containing 321 calories, 1.1g of salt and 2.3g of sugar. This is

compared to the classic’s 259 calories, 0.51g of salt and 0.6 of sugar. When it comes to fat, the meals are equal at 13g each.

Following the success of its vegan sausage roll, Greggs introduced a plant-based steak bake.

This contains more sugar than it’s classic Steak Bake, with 1g compared to 0g. It is also 0.4g higher in salt. On all other counts the vegan bake seems to be

healthier, with 380 calories versus 408kcal and 24g of fat compared to 26g.

Fans of the coffee chain Costa may opt for its vegan Smoky Ham & Cheeze Toastie, which comes in at 352kcal - 45 calories more than its British Ham & Cheese Toastie. It is also 0.9g higher in fat and contains 0.3g more salt, but manages to cut 3g off its sugar content.

Burger’s King’s fan favourite Whopper spurred the fast-food giant to create a vegan alternative. While both contain 12g of sugar, the plant-based patty fares better when it comes to calories and fat. The Vegan Rebel Whopper comes in at 596kcal versus 627kcal and 33g of fat compared to 34g. It does, however, contain 0.6 more salt than the meat feast. Vegans should be aware, however, the soy-based meal is cooked on the same grill as its meaty predecessors, according to reports.

KFC has also jumped on the vegan trend, introducing a plantbased burger.

This contains 0.19g more sugar than the fillet burger’s 5.5g, as well as 0.89g more salt.

Yet it is marginally less calorific at 450kcal versus 475kcal and 18.99g of fat compared to 19.3g.

Green tea 'linked to longer and healthier life' Many of us may find ourselves reaching for a cup of green tea to balance out the excesses of Christmas - and doing so could even help you live longer, according to a study.

And there is good news for regular drinkers after a team of Chinese researchers suggested having at least three cups a week is linked to a longer and healthier life.

Researchers from the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences in Beijing analysed the health of 100,902 people with no history of heart attack, stroke or cancer from the China-PAR project.

Participants were either classified as “habitual” tea drinkers if they enjoyed three or more cups a week and “nonhabitual” if less and followed up over a seven-year period.

According to the project, habitual tea drinkers aged 50 developed coronary heart disease and stroke 1.41 years later and lived 1.26 years longer than their non-habitual counterparts.

Habitual tea drinkers also had a 22 percent lower risk of dying from heart disease or stroke and 15 per cent lower risk of death from all causes.

When looking at the type of tea, the researchers said green was linked with an approximately 25 per cent lower risk

of developing - and also dying from heart disease and stroke.

Among habitual drinkers, just under half (49 per cent) drank green tea, while 8 per cent chose black. The rest favoured other varieties such as scented tea.

The team said the benefits of green tea could be linked to it being rich in polyphenols, nutrients which protect against cardiovascular disease and its risk factors such as high blood pressure.

On the other hand, they suggested that as black tea is fully fermented the polyphenols present may lose their antioxidant effects.

Health benefits They added that black tea is often served with milk, which previous research has shown may counteract the tea’s benefits for the vascular system.

"Habitual tea consumption is associated with lower risks of cardiovascular disease and all-cause death,” said first author Dr Xinyan Wang.

The favourable health effects are the most robust for green tea and for longterm habitual tea drinkers.”

The team’s findings have been published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, a journal of the European Society of Cardiology.

Shun snacks and eat hearty meals

For the next month, publishers will inundate us with myriad books on how to lose weight and get fit, ever mindful that the nation needs increasing help.

But there is one new title this month that asks us not to invest in those dieting books at all. Admittedly, its author, Dr Andrew Jenkinson, cheekily suggests we buy his book instead – but this weightloss surgeon is adamant that for too long we’ve been looking at dieting the wrong way.

In Why We Eat (Too Much), the doctor posits that our propensity for intermittent diets will always prove ultimately ineffective; the moment we come off them, the weight piles back on.

Jenkinson, who works at University College Hospital in London, has spent 20 years as a consultant surgeon performing gastric sleeve and bypass operations for those whose lives have been made miserable by the weight they’ve failed to keep off. He believes that while losing weight permanently might be difficult, it isn’t impossible.

The reason why so many people

If you’re anything like us, you’ll know the feeling of being so incredibly full from your dinner that you’re certain you’ll never eat another morsel again. Until your mum says “pudding anyone?” and everything changes. You suddenly have an overpowering feeling of starvation, like you haven’t eaten for a thousand years. Many joke that they have a separate stomach for dessert. Well, it turns out that’s almost true.

A scientist has proven that being full but still having room for something sweet is most definitely a thing.

Barbara Rolls, a professor of nutritional sciences at Penn State University in America has been researching this area for 40 years. She says: “The decline in pleasure you derive from food is specific to the food you have been eating, or other foods that are similar.

“So, while you might lose your appetite for that food, a different food will still be appealing. That's why you always have room for dessert.”

Professor Jane Ogden, an expert in eating behaviour from the University of Surrey, added: “People talk about their ‘pudding stomach’. They had enough of the main course and then something different comes along and, lo and behold, they can eat that.

But if you’re trying to lose weight, this can make things pretty tricky. Professor Ogden has some advice that might help though.

“If you are trying to lose weight, make puddings that aren't calorific, such as a fruit salad, frozen yoghurt or figs.”

struggle, he believes, is down to nothing less than an erosion of food culture over the last few decades.

“We used to have three meals a day, and build up a healthy appetite for each, but now it’s all about comfort food, food that we develop an attachment to because they stimulate the same pathways as Class A drugs, albeit at a lower dose. So we snack – endlessly.”

This comfort food comprises largely sugar, fat and salt, alongside colours, flavourings and preservatives to imitate the taste of unprocessed foods and to disguise, as Jenkinson says, “their offensive qualities”. “The more pleasurable,” he says, “the more it will sell.”

Jenkinson instead encourages a permanent avoidance of all processed food in favour of proper meals, cooked from fresh ingredients. In this way, our bodies will metabolise naturally so we won’t need any more faddish diets. Don’t expect to lose weight in a couple of months, he warns, but rather a couple of years.

Following the dream in Pilar de La Horadada Who would give up a £50,000+ salary, working in Financial Securities in Washington, Paris, and London to follow a dream to become a fitness instructor?

Jillian Crispin did just that and after quitting the rat race in 2003, went on to gain a wealth of qualifications in fitness training andforged a successful second career, working in Nottingham, before setting up a fitness studio in her home town on the Isle of Man. The amazing thing about this feisty and determined 51-year-old, is that 15 years into her new career, she felt that the dream wasn’t quite complete and made the decisionto once again up sticks, and this time relocate to sunnier climes.

Insufficient sleep is linked to a host of health problems, from depression to cardiovascular disease. Many of us struggle to get to sleep, or to stay asleep and find our minds racing in the small hours. There is nothing more frustrating than watching the clock in the middle of the night while desperately trying to get to sleep while your mind has other ideas.

Fortunately, there are some proven ways to help you on your way to the land of nod.

Make a to-do list Worries keep people awake, and they don’t have to be negative worries. It could also be something positive you’re planning, like a trip or a big event with a lot of things you have to remember.

Spending time during the day or earlier in the evening to sit and address those concerns may help. If you are being kept awake at night thinking about pending tasks, having a notebook to hand might help – jot down your to-do list to get the worries out of your mind and on to the page.

A recent study found that writing out a to-do list of future tasks helped people fall asleep nine minutes faster than people who wrote about tasks they’d already accomplished that day. (The longer and more detailed the participants’ lists, the faster they fell asleep.) It may seem counterintuitive that focusing on tomorrow’s responsibilities would lead to faster sleep, but researchers think the act of getting them down on paper helps clear the mind and stop rumination, at least temporarily.

Get out of bed Staying in bed and trying to make yourself fall asleep is a bad idea, says Cormac O’Donovan, MD, associate professor of neurology, because it may train your brain to associate your bed and your bedroom with insomnia and worries - which will only make the problem worse over time. Instead, if you lie awake for more than 20 to 30 minutes, get out of bed and do something else.

“If you’re trying to sleep and your brain’s not letting you, it could just be that you’re going to bed too early,” says Dr. O’Donovan. Conventional wisdom may tell you that you need eight hours of sleep, “but everyone is different, and some people’s bodies only demand six or seven,” he says. Staying up until you’re truly tired can help you find a sleep pattern that works best for you, as long as you can still wake up in the morning without a problem.

Read a book - but nothing too exciting Since digital screens are known to disrupt sleep, non digital distractions are recommended whenever possible - like reading a physical book.

It can help to read something that will get your mind off of whatever you’re worried about, but it should be

something that’s not too stimulating and won’t get you worked up about something else.

Listen to a podcast Podcasts or audiobooks can take your mind off your worries too, and they can be good alternatives to reading if you don’t want to turn on a light or strain your tired eyes. You can use headphones to listen without disturbing your bed partner too.

The rules for podcasts and audiobooks remain the same as for books though. Find a topic that’s not too exciting or upsetting (lay off the heated political debates and murder mysteries, for example), and get out of bed and listen elsewhere.

Soothing sounds Download a white noise app to help create an environment that’s more conducive to sleep. Noises like storms, waves or even a ceiling fan may even trigger memories of more relaxing times, and help take your mind off of whatever’s worrying you in the moment.

Focus on your breathing Another way to quiet your thoughts can be through simple breathing exercises. “Your mind is surely going to wander back to other things, but the important thing is to keep bringing it back to your breathing, in and out,” says Dr. O’Donovan. Deep, slow breathing can also slow your heart rate, which can be helpful if you’re anxious or worked up about something specific.

You can do diaphragmatic breathing while lying in bed, without turning on a light or disturbing your partner. Try this technique from sleep specialist Michael Breus, PhD: Place one hand on your chest and the other on your belly. Inhale through your nose for about two seconds, feeling your belly expand, then push gently on your belly as you slowly exhale. Repeat.

Try a guided meditation Meditation and guided imagery can also help some people fall asleep. You might zero in on your breathing, for example, or imagine yourself walking on the beach or floating on a cloud.

The more you practice meditation and guided imagery, the more effective it will become. You can use apps like Headspace or Calm, or even YouTube videos to get started. Experts suggest first practicing them during the day as if meditation becomes something you only do when you can’t sleep, it can be counterproductive.”

Download a science-based smartphone app Most smartphone apps haven’t been vetted with scientific research. The mySleepButton app, available with a free trial on the App Store and Google Play, is one exception: It uses cognitive science to “shuffle” users’ thoughts (by suggesting random and unrelated words and images) so they fall asleep easier.

It turns out a warm bath or shower isn’t just a cleansing, relaxing bookend to a long day. There’s real science behind the benefits of bathing at night to promote and improve sleep - particularly when it’s timed just right.

You may already know that taking a warm bath or shower (scientifically referred to as water-based passive body heating) before bed can help you fall asleep and stay asleep. A recent sleep study conducted by Shahab Haghayegh, a doctoral researcher in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Texas, not only verifies that recommendation, but digs into exactly how and when to bathe before hitting the sheets for optimal Z’s.

Researchers combed through more than 5,000 published studies on the effects of water-based passive body heating on sleep quality, length, efficiency, and onset latency (or, how quickly it takes you to fall asleep) - and found that the ideal pre-snooze bathing routine looks like this:

“Water-based passive body heating of 40 to 42.5 degrees Celsius (about 104 to 108.5 degrees Fahrenheit) was associated with both improved self-rated sleep quality and sleep efficiency, and when scheduled 1 to 2 hours before bedtime, for little as 10 minutes, led to significant shortening of sleep onset latency.”

Translation: Take a 10- to 15-minute, warm (but not too hot) shower or bath one to two hours before going to bed to help you fall asleep more quickly and stay in a deep, restful sleep through the night.

Why? That warm shower will first increase your body temperature, after which your body will experience an even more pronounced decrease in body temperature - that temperature dip is what promotes sleep.

New Year, New Figures In 2019, the year when we say a reduction in the maximum permitted speed on the main road network reduce, the location of most fatal and serious incidents, we also saw the lowest fatality rate since record began in Spain.

However, there is no room for complacency as a single death is one too many, and the figures took a turn for the worse when we look solely at the Christmas and New Year period.

During 2019 there were 1,007 fatal incidents on the interurban roads, in which 1,098 people have died and another 4,395 required hospital admission, which represents a 6.7% decrease in the number of incidents (-72); -7.6% in the number of deaths (-90) and a decrease of 3.8% in serious injuries (-174).

The reduction has also occurred during a time of growth in terms of mobility, both in the number of long-distance journeys made and the number of vehicles and drivers. In 2019, movements increased by 2.5% (10.2 million more), which means that over 427 million longdistance journeys were made during the past year; The number of vehicles has increased by 2.2%, standing at 34.5 million, and the census of drivers has grown by 1.3%, reaching 27.2 million drivers.

We must also keep in mind that the figures are provisional and the final balance will include deaths and serious injuries recorded after 24 hours following an incident, as well as those recorded on local roads.

The data does show that of the 365 days of last year, only 37 saw no fatalities.

The worst day in terms of fatalities was Sunday 21 July 21, with 13 deaths. On

average, 3 people lose their lives on the road every single day.

Statistics throughout the summer months have contributed to the lower annual figure with 46 fewer fatalities compared to last year. In fact, August saw the least number of deaths in recorded history.

Similarly, with 74 people losing their lives in April, that month was also the lowest death toll in history, and June, with 78 people being killed, matched the lowest figure ever recorded.

To date, 2015 was the year with the least deaths on the roads, specifically 1,131 deaths were recorded. This year, with 50 million more trips than in 2015, 3 million more vehicles and 1 million more drivers, 1,098 people lost their lives.

However, although the collective year showed a more positive light, the Christmas period saw a total of 57 people losing their lives in 52 fatal incidents between Friday 20 December 20 and Monday 6January 2020, an increase over the same period last year when 49 people lost their lives in interurban roads.

Moreover, of the 57 people who died, 21 are vulnerable users: 10 pedestrians, 9 motorcyclists and 2 cyclists.

Of the 35 people who were in cars of vans, 5 were not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the incident which ultimately cost them their lives. In terms of the location of incidents throughout the year, 800 people died on conventional roads, a reduction of 84 compared to 2018, a drop of 9.5%. Despite the decline, this type of road remains the most dangerous and where the highest number of fatalities are registered (73% of the total number of deaths).

In high-capacity roads, the number of fatalities also decreased compared to the previous year, but to a lesser extent.

Specifically, in 2019, 298 people died on motorways, compared to 304 in 2018.

Those killed on these roads account for 27% of the total deaths.

Vehicles leaving the carriageway remains the most common incident with 39% of those killed, followed by frontal collisions (23%), front-side collision (12%), running over a pedestrian (11%) and rearend collision (9%). Percentages all of which remain stable compared to the previous year.

The age group where the most fatalities occurred is the 45 to 54 years, with 20% (221 dead), followed by those over 65 with 19% of the dead (210).

The DGT is promising more action to combat dangerous activities and movements carried out by motorcyclists this year, which is understandable when we see that there were 264 bikers killed, 47 more than the previous year. In contrast, there were 19 moped riders killed, a reduction of 11 compared to 2018.

Similarly, there were 22 fewer pedestrians killed, although 115 people still lost their lives, and there were 40 cyclist fatalities, an increase of 4.

It is also worth noting that for the first time in history there were zero fatalities involving intercity buses. Of those killed in cars and vans, 20% were not wearing a seat belt at the time of the incident, which statistically means that of the 116 deaths, 63 of them are likely to be still alive today.

Similarly, of the 264 motorcyclists killed, 11 were not wearing a helmet, nor were 16 of the 40 cyclists who were killed.

Have You Got Your Environmental Badge?

The New Year saw a new era in motoring in cities such as Barcelona, where the need to control pollution is now far exceeding the need of the motorist.

Although it has been in existence for a couple of years now, and is still not mandatory, the need for obtaining an environmental badge, or “eco sticker”, is ever increasing.

The DGT explain that the eco sticker a way of classifying vehicles “based on their energy efficiency, considering their environmental impact.”

That classification aims to “positively discriminate against the most environmentally friendly vehicles and be an effective instrument at the service of municipal policies, both restrictive of traffic in episodes of high pollution, and the promotion of new technologies through tax benefits or related to mobility and the environment.”

Although there are several outlets in the CETRAA workshop and the IDEAUTO

administrative networks where you can obtain the sticker, by far the easiest way is from the correos post offices. All you have to do is present your car´s logbook and if you qualify then they will issue the sticker in exchange for a small fee.

However, not all vehicles will qualify for one of the four distinctions, so it is worth checking your car, especially is it is an

older model, before you go.

In order to check if your vehicle is entitled to display an environmental badge, visit the webpage:

https://sede.dgt.gob.es/es/vehiculos/disti ntivo-ambiental/, put your vehicle´s registration number in the box under the saying, “Introduce matrícula a consultar:”, and press the blue “Consultar” button.

After a few moments, if your vehicle qualifies, you will be told which badge you can display in your vehicle.

The four badges available are: 0 emissions, Blue: Identifies the most efficient and electric vehicles with extended autonomy and plugin hybrids with a minimum autonomy of 40kms or fuel cell vehicles.

Eco Label: Next in efficiency, mostly hybrid vehicles, gas or both.

C, Green: Internal combustion vehicles that comply with the latest EURO emissions standards.

B, Yellow: Internal combustion vehicles that, while not complying with the latest EURO emission specifications, do comply with previous ones.

All other vehicles that don´t qualify will not be permitted to display the badge and will also not be permitted to drive in

Apparently, King Kloppo hadn’t given any thought to the records Liverpool broke at the weekend. Yeah, right. The Premier League champions elect moved to 61 points from an available 63, the first time this has ever happened in any of the big give European leagues. Admittedly, I have not cross-referenced whether this happened before football was invented in 1992, but surely they’d have mentioned it if it was?

Shot-stopping Alisson has now stopped more shots in a row than anyone else in Premier League history or, to milk more from the same rubbish gag, in football history.

Liverpool did just about enough against Tottenham, mainly because Tottenham only really started to try and win in the last 20 minutes. Would Alisson still have such a great stat to his name had Son or Lo Celso been able to hit a barn door with a banjo?

Probably not.

There will have been plenty of Spurs fans deriding VAR at some point this season for sure, yet a lot of them were suddenly big fans when it became clear that Liverpool’s winner started from a throw-in that went the wrong way. Yes, it did - but that didn’t mean Serge Aurier had to strop for ten seconds out of position and then the rest of the defence switch off completely before the ball finally fell to Bobby Firmino to net the winner. Are we any closer to knowing what Mourinho is going to do with Spurs?

Maybe this wasn’t the game to try and work it out, but as long as ‘going to do’ involves getting rid of Eriksen and Danny Rose then performances might well improve. Has there been a better turn around in form this season?

Ah, yes - there has. Watford. Is it too soon to say Bournemouth are going down this season? And is it too soon to stop talking about Watford as cast iron certainties for the drop? A beautiful day with a course in very good condition, although the practice green gave all the idea that the greens would be like lightening, and they most certainly weren’t. A horsebox turning up with a buggy inside needed a little bit of a second look, as did buggy keys which appeared exactly the same but somehow weren’t, with only the marshal knowing the difference. A very slow front nine, for north-east European reasons, was followed by a very swift back, for a lack of north-east European reasons. Darren Hancock posted yet another impressive round, recording the day’s best score of 39 points playing off of 5, and quite clearly the society’s most regular star player. Carmel McCann and Mike Jordan were the other two players to better their handicaps and face a cut.

On 9th January 2020, La Finca Golf Couse was the venue for the first game of the New Year for the La Marina Golf Society.

Whist the morning was chilly, a good turnout made for a great day’s golfing and the New Year Trophy was well contested for.

Gerry McCabe came out on top for the Gold Division players, whilst Jimmy Scott won the Silver Division and was overall winner, with 32points therefore, taking home the New Year Trophy.

The winners of the four par 3s, nearest the pin, were won by Iain Lyall, Ray Hill, Jimmy Scott and Lesley Cullen.

We had one winner of the two’s pot which went to Jeff Wiszniewski.

ABBEY ANGLING We fished our 1st match in the new decade of 2020 for the Abbey Angling Cup at the El Bosquet Section A on the 7th January.

It was an excellent turnout and although a cold day it was dry and bright. The water on the section 1 to 10 was very clear, which caused peg one not to fish to its usual full potential.

Alan Preist had an amazing day to take the top spot with 18.380kgs, well done. Richard Wood was in second place with 13.900kgs and our new member Nick Bastock followed in third position with 4.620kgs; unfortunately there were five dry nets on the day.

El Paraiso Christmas Fishing Competition Our December competition had a Christmas theme to it with anglers being asked to dress accordingly, unfortunately only 5 of the 14 took up the challenge. However Santa was looking down and the top 3 places were taken by anglers who did dress up... absolutely nothing to do with good pegs.

8 of the 14 caught fish, although it was a fine day the fish seemed to be off their feed with the weights down from last month, varying weights to be expected over the winter months.

This is the second year we have played for this cup with the day sponsored by Tony Whyatt, unfortunately Tony could not be with us so he sent his best mate Rupert Bear to do the presentation on his behalf.

We had a good turnout for our first competition of 2020 and on returning to Alicante golf after a twelve month gap we found the course in exceptional condition; it was a very cold start for the four teams with an hour delay due to the course being frosty, but as soon as the sun got to work the day was perfect for golf at a pleasant 70o. We played Tony’s favourite format which had four players

in a team scoring with the better ball Stableford points.

Winners of the Los Amigos Cup were Martin Gadney, Steve Ayre, Mick Billins and Dave Sanders with 91 points, runners up were Alan Martin, Kenny Dow, Chris Baillie, and Tom Goulden with 76 points. Nearest the pins and longest drives, we called this the Alan Martin and Chris Houghton Show, with Alan Martin winning longest drives on holes 5 and 10 and nearest the pins holes 6 and 15 and Chris Houghton winning two nearest the pins on holes 3 and 12, winning the only other nearest the pin hole 8 was “The Wine Collector” Brian Court.

ElCHE CF advance in the Copa Del Rey On Saturday Elche CF played in the Copa del Rey, the Kings Cup, similar to the FA Cup in the UK. Spain has 126 starting teams which allows the local grass route minnows of Football to leave their mark on the history of this Famous Cup. Elche CF have appeared only once in the final. In 1969 when they lost 1-0 to Atletico Bilbao in Madrid.

Elche CF drew nearby Yeclano Deportivo, who currently play in the 3rd tier Segunda B. They are sitting strongly in 2nd place, behind league leaders Cartagena FC. Yecla, more widely known for its wine than its football, hosted the fixture at their 4,000 capacity La Constitucion Stadium. Their confidence was high as they have not lost at home for a year and a half. The exciting match was well attended by some of Yecla’s 34,000 inhabitants plus many Franjiverdes fans who had travelled the short distance.

At 17:30 on Saturday the Match kicked off. The Elche CF manager Pacheta made some key changes, juggling his squad ahead of Tuesday’s key away La Liga game at Sporting Gijon. He set out to gain an early advantage, in the hope to calm a very noisy stadium of home fans. In the 21st

minute, the breakthrough came from an Ivan Sanchez assist to Ghezouani who scored his 2nd cup goal of the season.

This put Elche 1 up, a scoreline which they maintained until half time.

The 2nd half saw Yeclano push tirelessly, endeavouring to square up the tie. They succeeded on the 61st minute. Mario Sanchez crossed from the right wing, to Aleyeto who made no mistake to level the match. Would the dream come true for the home team as the next round of the cup sees the big boys from La Liga enter into the draw?

Patcheta made tactical substitutions, bringing on Nino, Gonzalo Villar and Yacine Qasmi. Their fresh legs and experience made the difference. In the 79th minute a move started by Nino ended in Pere Milla taking Elche into the next round.
