Further closure at Alicante Airport causes more delay misery

See Main Adverts on pages 35, 36 & 37

Alicante Airport was closed once again from 1pm Sunday afternoon until 1pm yesterday afternoon causing more passenger misery. The closure decision was made by bosses after severe weather warnings were issued across the region as storm Gloria began to inch closer to the Southern Costa Blanca. It was feared that debris left behind by Wednesday’s fire would be caught in the predicted red alert force gale winds and make landings and take offs too dangerous to risk. AENA urged passengers to check with their airlines regarding the closure and not to head to the airport. This is the second serious disruption to affect Alicante Airport in a short space of time as the airport experienced an unexpected closure on Wednesday after a fire broke out in one of its offices in the terminal building and quickly spread to the roof. Thousands of passengers were affected as flight disruption spread over two days with many being transferred by

bus to neighbouring Murcia International Airport (Corvera) and even to the International Airport at Valencia more than 170km away. Dozens of departures were cancelled after the last flight, Ryanair to Dublin, took off at 4.05pm on Wednesday. That evening Ryanair cancelled flights to East Midlands, Gatwick and Leeds Bradford, while easyJet grounded Gatwick and Liverpool departures. On Thursday, Ryanair has cancelled a dozen flights between UK airports and Alicante, with round-trips from Edinburgh, Gatwick, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle and Stansted grounded. An estimated 2,000 passengers are affected on these flights alone. The Costa Blanca airport is the fifth-busiest in Spain. Last year, 15 million

passengers passed through the airport – with many of them from the UK. As of 2 pm on Thursday the airport began to regain normality in its flight operations, although during the day around 64 flights had to be diverted to the Murcia Region International Airport and another 16 flights to Valencia Airport . By mid-afternoon, the Alicante facilities had already been able to manage 35 flights on their own. By Friday all flight appeared to be operating normally with 189 scheduled flights at Alicante-Elche Airport.

New Year meeting for Torrevieja West Residents The first monthly public meeting of 2020 for Torrevieja West Neighbourhood Crime Watch/Residents will be at 4.30pm 27th January at Casa Ventura. Attending will be Councillor for International Residents Gitte Lund Thomsen and a financial adviser. Mayor to meet head of Valencian Government Eduardo Dolon, Mayor of Torrevieja, was scheduled to meet the head of the Valencian Government Ximo Puig on Monday. Dolón travelled to Valencia for the meeting, which was set to take place at Valencian Government headquarters at the time the Costa Blanca People was going to press. The Torrevieja mayor has requested to meet the president of the Generalitat Valenciana on more than a dozen occasions. It finally looks like he will have the opportunity to address the needs of Torrevieja, the fifth largest town in the Valencian Community. High on the mayor’s agenda is the construction of Amanacer primary school which has been forced to hold classes in prefabricated classrooms for the last 14 years. Eduardo Dolón indicated that there is no specific reference to Colegio Continued on page 5

More than 20,000 people took to the streets of Orihuela on Saturday to protest against the introduction of the newly imposed Law of Autonomous Multilingualism. The teaching regulation is being enforced by the Minister of Education, Vicent Marzà on behalf of the Generalitat Valenciana and basically means children will be taught in Valencian and not in Castilian Spanish. Demonstrators said they are fighting for linguistic choice in schools and centres of education and the imposition of the curriculum in the Valencian language in such institutions does not respect the wishes of parents, who want their children to be educated in Spanish. Protests also took place in many other towns and cities across the Vega Baja and wider Community including Valencia, Alicante, Elche, Castelló, Requena, Utiel, Villajoyosa, Villena and Elda where a further 75,000 people are estimated to have been on the streets. The demonstrators included Parent/Teacher Associations, many organisations representing the general public as well as Mayors, councillors and representatives of the Partido Popular, Ciudadanos and Vox including Isabel

Bonig, Emilio Bascuñana and Eduardo Dolón, in addition to the mayor of Alicante, Luis Barcala. Orihuela hosted the main march, convened by the Federation of Student Parent Associations (FAPA) Gabriel Miró of Alicante, under the slogan “For the right to choose our language”, which, according to Local Police sources, was attended by about 20,000 people. In a statement read out to protesters in front of the Orihuela Town Hall, the spokeswoman for parents, Sonia Terrero, demanded the repeal of the Multilingualism Law which is scheduled to be introduced during the coming school year. The statement went on to say that “the right of article 27 of the Constitution, which recognises freedom of education must be applied, and which is also recognised by the United Nations Organization, stating that parents should have the right to choose the type of education of their own children”. President of the PP in the Valencian Community, Isabel Bonig, again reiterated her offer to parents to make available the legal services of the PP.

Orihuela targets tourists for coming season The Councillor for Tourism, Mariola Rocamora, has presented the campaign that the Tourism Department will take to the International Tourism Fair (FITUR) to be held at the IFEMA exhibition centre in Madrid from 22nd to 26th January. Using the delights of Orihuela Costa’s beaches, Boulevard and golf courses, the heritage of the City, its gastronomy and the renowned poet Miguel Hernandez, the municipality will return once again to the national exhibition as part of the wider Costa Blanca umbrella with the promotional campaign “Discover Orihuela”. This year a promotional video will be presented that will capture another of the great attractions of Orihuela - the development of different active tourism sports throughout the municipality. This project will be exhibited tomorrow, Wednesday 22nd January on the Costa Blanca stand at FITUR. The Councillor of Tourism, Mariola Rocamora, explained that the video “has been made by specialists in the field of active tourism and filmed across our municipality over three months with the collaboration of the Department of Sports of the City of Orihuela, as well as the main local sports and leisure

associations”. The team responsible for the filming searched for the best locations to reflected the beauty and uniqueness of the Oriolan territory and include: hiking in the Eagle Peak, Senda de las Minas, Cruz de la Muela, Los Agujeros and La Copa de la Maceta. The video also features trail running on Monte de San Miguel, canyoning in the Barranco de Sanes and Vistabella golf course. Water sports have also been filmed in the areas of Cabo Roig and Campoamor, and mountain bike shots were taken

Councillor Rocamora

in the Sierra de Hurchillo and La Pedrera Reservoir. Councillor Rocamora also reported that another video will be taken to FITUR which includes all the important festive activities that the municipality of Orihuela has such as Holy Week, The Three Kings, San Antón and the festivals in Honour of the Virgin of Monserrate. In addition, Orihuela will appear, as it did last year, in the new edition of the magazine "Gastronomic destinations of the province" that will also be launched at FITUR.

Amanecer in the GVA-2020 Budgets. Earlier this month, the school was forced to close for several days when a corridor between prefabricated classrooms collapsed. Another issue of special relevance for the mayor of Torrevieja is the issue the N-332 as it passes through Torrevieja. In particular, the 800 metre stretch of busy highway as it passes the hospital is a bottleneck of traffic which causes real issues for emergency services vehicles en route to and from Torrevieja hospital.

Torrevieja at FITUR Torrevieja will be represented at Fitur, the renowned tourism expo, from January 22nd to 26th. The team will promote an array of features of Torrevieja including its nautical-sports tourism, the gastronomy and the Carnival. Two new videos about Torrevieja will be debuted at the expo, which will be attended by a multitude of tour operators. A showcooking demonstration will be staged at FITUR and a summary of the town’s forthcoming events and fiestas will be presented.

Stew competition The third international ‘Cocido’ competition is set to be held on Saturday 1st February in the gardens of the Municipal Leisure Centre (CMO). The contest, now in its third year, aims to highlight the traditional local dish and given Torrevieja’s international population, organisers are keen to see an international twist on the traditional Torrevejense dish. The event begins at 10am when members of the jury will begin their rounds, inspecting contestants during their preparation of the dish. Stews must be ready for tasting at 2pm, at which time the jury will taste each entry (the order of tasting decided on a lottery basis). The number of participants in the contest is set to a maximum of 15. Registration for the contest is open until January 27th, at 2:00 p.m. or until the maximum quota of 15 participants is completed. Some 400 people are expected to attend this gastronomic event. All hobbyists and foodies can participate, regardless of age, profession or nationality. Participation may be either individually or representing an Association, group of friends, etc. As it is an amateur contest, professional chefs are not allowed to participate in the contest. Registration is free and interested participants must register at the offices of the Department of Senior Citizens, located on Calle Maldonado, No. 5.

The regional government of Spain’s Balearic Islands has approved a law that cracks down on so-called “booze tourism,” where visitors are encouraged to binge-drink alcohol. The new regulation aims to put an end to bar crawls, 2 for 1 parties, happy hours and free drinks that are typically offered in the popular holiday destinations, by making it illegal to promote or sell such activities to tourists. The new regulation also bans alcohol from being sold in night-time stores, which will now have to close from 9.30pm to 8am. The restrictions, however, only apply to the most popular party spots of the islands Palma de Mallorca and Ibiza such as Magaluf, Arenal de Palma and Sant Antoni de Portmany. According to a press release from the regional government, “it is the first law in Europe that restricts the promotion and sale of alcohol in set tourist zones.” The Balearic Islands government also acknowledge that “this law could also have great repercussions outside of Spain.”

The law also targets so-called balconing, a term that refers to usually inebriated tourists jumping from balcony to balcony in their hotels, or attempting to launch themselves from great heights into swimming pools - a practice that has cost many foreign tourists their lives in Spain. Under the regulation, hotels must remove everyone caught balconing from their facilities. In this case, the rule applies to the entire region. The regional head of tourism, Iago Negueruela, says the law is a positive step forward. “We are going for a model of sustainable tourism and we want to improve relations between tourists and residents,” he said. The regulation bans drinking tours from being organised or advertised to reduce drunken behaviour in Palma de Mallorca and Ibiza. While tourists will not be restricted from arranging their own pub crawl, they will not be able to buy alcohol like before from establishments throughout

the night, nor will they be offered free drinks or other similar promotions. What’s more, a set price will be put on alcohol to stop “these kinds of offers,” said Neguerela. The law also cracks down on party boats, which invite guests on cruises involving large amounts of alcohol. Under the new rules, these businesses will be banned from putting up advertising in Magaluf, Arenal de Palma and Sant Antoni de Portmany, and from picking and dropping off clients from these spots. The regional government has also suspended the concession of new alcohol licenses to party boats. Businesses could face fines of between €1,000 and €600,000, or be shut down for a maximum of three years

for breaking the new law. The law was put together following in-depth talks with the tourism sector, as well as the town halls that have highlighted the problems involved with booze tourism. “Attracting a tourism of excess is counterproductive for the whole sector, that’s why there are areas where the hotel owners are changing what they offer to attract a different kind of tourist,” José Luis Zoreda, the vice president of the Spanish tourism lobby Exceltur, said recently. While the law currently only applies to Magaluf, Arenal de Palma and Sant Antoni de Portmany (with the exception of the balconing rules), Negueruela is open to extending the rules to other areas.

A message for UK nationals from HMA Hugh Elliott – Happy New Year, and please make sure you are registered! As you know, the UK will be leaving the EU on 31 January and we are on course to leave with a Deal, so I wanted to explain some of the jargon around the parliamentary process and, crucially, what all of this means for British nationals living in Spain. Citizens’ rights have always been an important part of the negotiations on our exit from the EU. Indeed the citizens’ rights parts of the Withdrawal Agreement (the agreement about how we leave the EU) were one of the first areas to be agreed between the UK and the EU back in autumn 2018. The final text of the Withdrawal Agreement was agreed between the UK and the EU in October 2019 and there were no substantive changes to the citizens’ rights elements. In the UK, the process for approving the Withdrawal Agreement – or what many of us call ‘the Deal’ – is already well underway in parliament. The House of Commons approved the Withdrawal Agreement Bill – which is the domestic legislation that needs to be passed by parliament – by a majority of 99 on Thursday 9th January. It is now being discussed in the House of Lords. If there are any amendments as a result of this, these will be considered by the House of Commons. The Bill will then be given “Royal Assent” which means that it

becomes law in the UK (to follow this in depth, see the UK Parliament website https://services.parliament.uk/Bills/201920/europeanunionwithdrawalagreement .html). In parallel, the European Parliament will also vote on the Withdrawal Agreement on 29 January; approval by a simple majority would mean that the EP has also ratified “the Deal”. These processes are a bit intricate, but the key point for you is that we are firmly on track to leave with a Deal on 31 January. It is also important to note that your rights under the Withdrawal Agreement are completely independent of the negotiations about our future trade and security relationship with the EU. For British Nationals in Spain, the Withdrawal Agreement contains really important guarantees for you on citizens’ rights, such as the right to continue to live and work in Spain, continuation of healthcare and uprating of pensions. Those rights will be protected for as long as you remain resident in Spain, provided that you are registered as a resident by 31 December 2020. That’s why it is so important to ensure that you, your family, your friends and indeed your neighbours are all correctly registered as resident here. If you are not sure whether you are or don’t know what to do next, have a look at this video from our consular

advisor which takes you through the process, and explains the differences between the padron, NIE and residencia: https://www.facebook.com/BritsInSpain/ videos/2503168039961576/ You have time and there are plenty of appointments in most provinces, but do make it a New Year’s Resolution to get it done as soon as you can! I should also clarify that UK Nationals cannot apply for a TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero or foreigner’s identity card) until after Brexit – something I know some people have been asking about. If there is any change to the residency system after Brexit we will update our Living in Guide at gov.uk/livinginspain, so do sign up for alerts and follow us on Facebook at facebook.com/britsinspain. We are also holding outreach events in a number of locations in January, including Benidorm, Lanzarote and Murcia, and further details of all our outreach events are on the Living in Guide and on Facebook, so do come along if you have any questions or doubts, and encourage others to join us too. If you can’t attend a face-to-face event, we will be doing another Facebook live session on 31 January where we can also answer your questions directly. My very best wishes for 2020. HMA Hugh Elliott

CONTINUED HELP FOR OUR TASHA A special appeal by Stevie Spit and the Costa Blanca People Tasha has a rare genetic condition called Mitochondrial disease. This is a progressive, degenerative condition that has slowly taken over her life. There are no official medical treatments for Mito, except for taking a specific Mito cocktail of various vitamins and supplements to try and boost mitochondrial function. Tasha travelled to America in 2018 to get help with this. There is NO cure! Tasha is 26 and most of her body is affected by mitochondrial disease. She can’t see, stand, walk, sit up unaided, eat solid foods or even breathe for herself. She has a tracheostomy and ventilator that breathes for her 24/7. Tasha relies on different tubes and medications to keep her alive. Tasha has gone from a fun, social, hard working girl to being mostly bedridden and in and out of hospital on a monthly (and sometimes weekly) basis. Unfortunately things have got a bit worse for Tasha recently. She now has problems with her kidneys causing lots of swelling and she has to take medication for fluid retention. Mitochondrial disease is a progressive genetic condition and this, paired with her other problems, makes life very difficult - though most of these problems stem from the mitochondrial disease itself. Tasha has also been diagnosed with an immune deficiency and which leaves her more at risk of infections. This is currently causing her lots of additional problems so she is waiting to see a specialist about this. On top of all that, Tasha is in the

process of being diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis which is yet more pain every day, on top of the pain she already suffers. In general Tasha has got a lot weaker which means she needs more help with day to day things, even turning over in bed she can’t do by herself now. She is getting more hospital appointments with more specialists to try and keep on top of all the new problems. Appeal Tasha is still on palliative care. Her nursing was partially funded by a local charity, but this has run out. We are appealing to members of the public to help Tasha to continue to live at home. We need to pay for a nurse for 3 hours a day, Monday to Friday. Tasha’s current carer Georgia has offered to work for €10 an hour (a very much reduced rate). This keeps Tasha in a routine with somebody she know, and who knows her, and most importantly Georgia is fully trained and competent in all of Tasha’s care needs. The hospital is happy with this arrangement - it's important we get to continue working with Georgia – now, it's just a matter of finding the funding to do so which amounts to €600 a month JUST to pay for her care. A bit of background of what Georgia does for Tahsa: Georgia helps with all aspects of personal care Including washing, dressing, toileting etc. She does physio with Tasha which is imperative to stop muscles wasting away. She is competent in tracheostomy changes, ventilator management, catheter care, feeding tube care, sterile technique for her

central line and also administering Tasha’s medication. Georgia is trained in moving Tasha, lifting her into her wheelchair, driving her specially adapted car so she can get to hospital appointments. Also allowing her a little privacy, dignity and a tiny bit of independence from her parents so she can get out to do the simple things we take for granted, for example a trip to the local shop to buy a birthday card for her dad without him knowing. With Tasha’s dad working full time, that only leaves her stepmum and unfortunately she can’t lift Tasha, get her into her wheelchair or drive her specially adapted car so that leaves Tasha stuck in bed and unable to get to hospital appointments or move properly. Because Tasha can’t be left alone, that also means her stepmum can’t get out and do some work or go to the shops when needed. She only manages to do these things when Georgia is with Tasha in the mornings. Georgia has been a vital part of Tash’s care for a few years now. Many people have kindly offered to help with Tasha’s care. She deeply appreciates everybody's offer to help. It is a very complicated situation as a new carer would need to be trained in Tasha’s specific care. It's not a suitable situation to have lots of different people, and for obvious reasons Tasha needs stability and routine. Social services are aware of this new nursing situation. Without sufficient care at home they will put Tasha into a care home which would be devastating for Tasha her family and, I have to say for me personally. Tasha is an inspiration to

thousands of sick people across the globe whom she advises and support online by boosting their morale and offering advice. She deserves and needs to be at home with her family. We know we can’t change the world, but we can stop Tasha’s changing for the worse. To do this, I need 60 people from this community to dedicate €10 a month with an ongoing commitment. This will cover Tasha’s nursing care for the foreseeable future.

I’ll put my money where my mouth – I’m number one on the list - €10 a month from me. If you think you can pledge to donate €10 per month to help pay for Tasha’s nursing care and allow her to keep living at home with her family, please get in touch and we will send you details of how to set up a direct debit. You can contact me (Stevie), Tasha’s Dad Andy or, speak to the Costa Blanca People and we will compile a list of the ‘Super Sixty’. Stevie Spit BEM

Temporary solution for Quesada road works

Orihuela to host the Cycling Tour of the Valencian Community

Rojales Town Council has provided temporary relief to the huge parking problems caused by essential road works being carried out across the town. The works are a €700,000 road improvement plan to transform the main thoroughfare in Ciudad Quesada, the Avenue de las Naciones and they have only just begun. However, there has been much frustration from locals because of the instant removal of dozens of parking spaces on that road. Local residents and business owners have voiced concerns that the road works and the lack of parking in particular will have a detrimental effect on the town, the community and the local economy; effectively choking the life from the high street. The Town Hall is being requested to provide replacement car parks urgently. One way traffic along the entire street will soon be in operation, as engineers re-route utilities and resurface the road, one side at a time. Consequently, the ‘zig-zag’ parking bays have been removed, and will eventually be replaced by a wider and safer pavement on the north side. Luckily, the council has managed to lease some spare land nearby in Calle Sola, the entrance to which is opposite The Old Don Carlos, and also on Calle Azul, behind the BIG FM studios. Once the road has been resurfaced and new pavements installed on each side, a mini-roundabout will be built at the busy four-way junction next to the Municipal Centre.

The Mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, the Councillor for Sports, Víctor Bernabéu and the Councillor of Tourism, Mariola Rocamora, held press conference alongside the Director General of the Tour, Ángel Casero and the Regional Director of Banco Sabadell, Manuel Villalgordo, to announce that Orihuela will host the third stage of the 71st Cycling Tour of the Valencian Community for the fourth consecutive year. “This new edition has a nuance of greater sensitivity, greater closeness due to the catastrophe suffered by the Vega Baja region due to the effects of the DANA floods last September and the route will be a small recognition and a show of affection, closeness and support to all the victims ”, explained the Mayor. The third stage, where 175 kilometres will be travelled, will leave on Friday 7th February from the Puerta de la Olma, located in the vicinity of the Diocesan School of Santo Domingo de Orihuela, and then travel through the districts of El Escorratel, Hurchillo, La Murada, Molins and on to other towns in the Vega Baja region before finishing in

Torrevieja. The race will be broadcast through the Eurosport channel and will reach more than 130 countries around the world, so it is important that Orihuela is a named stage. There will be 21 teams that will compete in the tournament, 12 of them World Tour, 7 Continental Pro and 7 Continentals with the participation of top-level cyclists among whom names such as Alejandro Valverde or Geraint Thomas stand out. Newly introduced for this year’s race is a the category "Proseries", a level that is important in cycling competitions such as Le Tour, La Vuelta or II Giro. The Mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, pointed out that this cycling tour is important because "we are Valencian and enjoy this sport", the Town Hall has firmly opted for the sport "bringing the best cycling for the residents of the region to enjoy" and highlighted the importance for the town to appear in the media, ensuring everyone knows the historical heritage of the city of Orihuela”. Finally, Bascuñana invited all Oriolanos and visitors to attend the third stage of the 71st Cycling Tour of the Valencian Community on 7th February in Orihuela.

Pick up the poop! Torrevieja town hall has launched a campaign to encourage dog owners to pick up after their fourlegged friends. Urban Councillor Carmen Gomez Candel held a press conference to launch the campaign which aims to change bad habits by pet owners. To draw attention to the issue, the town hall is providing 2000 small reusable bottles, designed to clean up pet urine (the idea is that the pet owner fills the bottle with an equal part vinegar-water mixture to rinse the area after their dog lifts its leg). In addition, each bottle is equipped with a roll of bags to help owners dispose of dog poo – a total of 22,000 bags will be issued alongside the 2000 bottles. While many responsible dog owners do pick up their dogs’ excrement, rinsing the urine away isn’t really the done thing in Torrevieja. The aim of the vinegarwater mix is to rinse the urine from where the dog has peed – this not only cleans the area, but also eliminates the smell and therefore discourages another dog coming along to pee on the same spot. Councillor Gomez said, “the mixture of vinegar and water is an effective remedy to prevent it from becoming an automatic step for other dogs – it also removes the urine and resulting odors from business facades, sidewalks, streets and street

furniture.” The bottles and roll of bags are designed so that they can be hung from the dog’s lead and are foldable and reusable. The aim of the campaign is to eradicate one of the most often recurring problems on the streets of Torrevieja on a daily basis. The presence of dog excrement not only generates problems for the unlucky person who might step on it, it can also become a source of infection and can transmit parasites or toxic-infectious diseases. Not only that, but it damages the image of Torrevieja and cleaning it up is an expense for municipal coffers that could be used for other tasks.

Councillor Gomez said that thanks to a change in attitudes, most dog owners do bring a bag each time they walk their dogs. However, some forget or don’t yet see the importance of picking up after their dogs which prompts many complaints from other residents. Under Spanish law, security forces have the power to sanction pet owners who do not pick up their doggy deposits and fines can range from 100 to 750 euro. All those interested can pick up a free bottle and roll of bags at the Town Hall of Torrevieja, at the Municipal Animal Shelter and in the Tourist Office (Vista Alegre promenade).

A summer of music Local music fans were delighted with announcements made this week for forthcoming concerts – one in Torrevieja and one in Murcia. Welsh singing legend Bonnie Tyler will perform in Torrevieja this summer while ska band Madness play in Murcia. Madness is set to play in Murcia’s Plaza de Toros on June 26th with tickets priced from €35. The pop and ska band from Camden Town in London, was formed in 1976. The group has continued to perform with their most recognised lineup of seven members, although that has varied slightly over the years. Known for their cheeky humour and musical eclecticism, the band members called a "dysfunctional family", the group was incredibly popular in the late 70s and 80s. As their career progressed, Madness moved

closer toward conventional pop music and has become one of the most successful British bands of all time. Bonnie Tyler, born Gaynor Hopkins, was brought up in Skewen, a small village near Swansea in Wales. She grew up to become one of Wales’ best known performers, achieving chart success all over the world. She is recognised for her distinctive husky voice, and a long list of hit singles including Total Eclipse of the Heart, It’s a Heartache, Holding Out for a Hero, Lost in France, More Than a Lover, Bitterblue and If I Sing You a Love Song. In her 50-year career, Bonnie has performed for audiences in countries across the world, and she has enjoyed critical acclaim for her latest albums. Her latest album, Between the

Earth and the Stars, is another contemporary record with nods to past moments from her 50year career. The album also boasts three exciting duets with Rod Stewart, Cliff Richard and Francis Rossi. “I’ve performed all over the world, and still love hitting the stage and entertaining my fantastic fans. The time was right however to get back into the studio but I knew that, to mark 50 years of performing, I had to deliver something really special. I’ve done just that! The new material on ‘Between the Earth and the Stars’ is sounding amazing.” Bonnie is set to perform in Torrevieja’s Parque Antonio Soria on 11th July 2020 with support acts including Cuervos and local artist Cuervos Eve.B. Tickets are priced from €20.

Orihuela agrees to unlock construction licenses The Department of Urban Planning of the City Council of Orihuela has pledged to validate throughout the month of February all applications for work permits processed in recent months through the agreement signed since last August with the College of Architects. More than twenty companies affected by the delay in the processing of authorisations, which in some cases is more than 2-and-a-half years where urban planning legislation limits it to two months and the sector assumes 3 and 4 months to be a reasonable period. The blockade endangers millions of investments in the real estate development sector, especially in Orihuela Costa and the absence of a license generates a chain of blockages in most of the negotiations between promoters, financiers and clients. The commitment to unclog the situation is based on four measures agreed recently and should see the granting of around one hundred major building licenses equivalent to about 800 homes.

GBP / EUR UPDATE At the end of last week, there were indications from various members of the Bank of England'sMonetary Policy Committee (MPC) hinted that a rate cut might be imminent. In article in the Financial Times on Sunday, MPC member GertjanVlieghestated, "I really need to see an imminent and significant improvement in the UK data to justify waiting a little bit longer." This meant that the pound had a tough start to the week but there was a silver lining amongst the clouds. GDP monthly statistics showed the UK economy shrank by 0.3% in November, lower than forecast which led to NIESR estimates that GDP stagnated in the final quarter of the year. Manufacturing output fell 1.7% in November while the broader industrial production was down 1.2%. The Prime Minister taking an optimistic tone regarding Brexit in an interview gave the pound a much-needed boost; he did sound a small note of caution but his opinion was that it would be "epically likely" that an agreement will be reached with the EU ahead of the 31 December deadline. Sterling was soon on the back foot again after UK inflation data came in lower than expected. The consumer price index rose 1.3% in the year to December while the retail price index was up by 2.2%; the numbers had no lasting impact on the pound but did come hot on the heels of dovish comments from MPC member Michael Saunders, who argued in a speech that "Britain risks getting stuck in a low-inflation trap if the central bank does

not take early action to boost the economy.” The belief amongst investors is that it is not a question of if, but when there will be a rate cut. The speculation put pressure on the pound as investors weighed up the possibility of a 30th January rate cut against the possibility of a wait until the next opportunity on 26th March. It was a relatively quiet week for the euro, with no surprises and more of the same from the economic statistics. German wholesale prices fell 1.3% in 2019. Inflation was stable almost across the board but the European Central Bank (ECB) confirmed that economic growth remains weak despite some hope that a lessening of tensions between the US and China would help to change the downward trend. There seemed little response by the euro to the news that the US Treasury had placed Germany, Ireland and Italy on their ‘Monitoring List’ of potential currency manipulators. Notes from the ECB policy meeting on 12th December 2019 highlighted that recent data point to “a stabilization in euro area growth,” but that the governing council still see “continued weak euro area growth dynamics.” The ECB foresees modest growth of 1.1% for the eurozone this year. At the moment, Christine Lagarde is choosing to stay the course plotted by her predecessor Mario Draghi, including the QE programme, but she is undertaking a detailed review of how the ECB sets monetary policy, which may lead to some changes in the future.

Vueling among world’s safest budget airlines

Squeeze your own gets thumbs up

The 10 safest budget airlines for 2020 have been named, and Catalunya-based Vueling is among them. Each year, Airline Ratings gives the top 20 mostsecure carriers worldwide, and this year has included a separate section for the best 10 low-cost flight firms in terms of safety. Australian national airline Qantas takes the top spot yet again – having been leader in practically every major developments and advances in operational safety in the last 60 years – and is followed by Air New Zealand, EVA Air (Taiwan), Etihad, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, Emirates, Alaska Airlines, Cathay Pacific Airways, Virgin Australia, Hawaiian Airlines, and Virgin Atlantic Airlines. European carriers which make the top 20 are TAP Portugal, SAS, Swiss, Finnair, Lufthansa, Aer Lingus and KLM, in that order, although Royal Jordanian slots between SAS and Swiss. The vast majority of the safest airlines are very large inter-

In a review of orange juice across the country's major supermarkets, the OCU consumer organisation tested the vitamin C content in each the moment it was extracted, a few hours later, then again at intervals of 24, 48 and 72 hours the OCU concluded the levels of vitamin C remained the same at every test. More and more Spanish supermarkets are offering a 'squeeze-your-own' service, where locally- and nationallyproduced fresh oranges are piled into a giant machine, customers take an empty bottle, normally available in different sizes, and pump the juice into it themselves. It is an ideal option for those who do not have juicers at home, and is more popular than the varieties sold by the carton – in fact, an increasing number of Spanish residents are tending to drink fresh juice rather than prepackaged. The OCU studied 24 samples in three different branches of each of the eight supermarkets it reviewed – Mercadona, Carrefour, Alcampo, Hípercor, Lidl, Aldi, Día, and Ahorramás. Its first study addressed what turned out to be unfounded

continental carriers, which have a sizeable budget enabling them to be 'on the cutting edge of safety, innovation and launching of new aircraft', according to chief editor of Airline Ratings, Geoffrey Thomas. New aircraft mentioned include the Airbus A350 and the Boeing 787.

Those which did not make the cut are not necessarily 'unsafe' – major national carriers such as Air France, Alitalia, British Airways, Turkish Airlines and Iberia – just that they are not at the peak of the industry in this respect. European Union air travel laws are very strict and no carrier which falls short of its extremely demanding safety standards is allowed into the continent's air space. But appearing on a 'safest' list is

extra reassurance for customers, and is something Vueling can now use as an additional selling point. Owned by the IAG group, which also owns Iberia and British Airways, Vueling joins other European low-cost carriers Flybe and Wizz Air, both of which are regulars in most of Spain's main airports and offer connections several times a week between Spanish hubs and the rest of the continent. JetBlue, IndiGo, Air Arabia, Frontier, HK Express, Volaris, and WestJet make up the remainder of the list. According to Airline Ratings, the list of the 'world's safest for 2020' has come at a key moment in modern air travel history – just as inquiries into the Boeing 737 MAX 8 crash, which killed 157 people, are under way. “All airlines have incidents every day,” Airline Ratings assures. “But many of these are issues relating to aircraft or engine manufacturing, not to the operations of the actual companies.”

concerns among some consumers – whether the 'squeeze-your-own' machines were hygienic. The organisation says the hygiene quality of juices depends upon how often the machines are cleaned, but stressed it did not find any risk in any of the juices or squeezers and considers the product to be very safe. Although the OCU recommends freshly-squeezed juices are consumed within 24 hours and kept in the fridge during this time, it all depends upon how clean the machines are – and when the juice is pressed from a supermarket machine in store, it is perfectly safe to drink within 48 hours, even though anecdotal evidence points to its being fresh enough to do so for longer. All supermarkets reviewed cleaned their machines thoroughly at least once a day, normally just before closing time – in fact, those who want to add a bottle of hand-pressed juice to their shopping basket should normally aim to get there at least an hour before their local branch shuts to be sure the machine was still in use. The OCU reviewed prices, but did not find any difference in

quality between stores – in fact, the oranges used are practically all grown in the Comunidad Valenciana in the east of Spain, one of Europe's largest orangeproducing areas and one which supplies most of the supermarkets in the UK. The cheapest half-litre bottle is from Alcampo, at €1.75, followed by Carrefour, Día, and Lidl, at €1.79. Mercadona, Aldi, Ahorramás and Hípercor were the most expensive for a halflitre bottle, at €2.25. But it works out cheaper to buy a litre instead in terms of economies of scale – these range from €2.89 to €2.99, lower in price during peak orange season, from about November to February, and higher in price when these are more scarce. Although considerably more than a litre carton of orange juice from concentrate, the in-store 'squeeze-your-own' option is still good value for money – the machines filter out the 'bits', meaning for every 100ml of juice, a whole large orange is used, and buying the fruit to squeeze at home works out about the same price per orange as hand-pressing them in a supermarket.

Foreigners have invested 29 billion euros in Spanish property All property-related activity has accounted for 20 percent of all foreign investment between 2014 and 2018. Real estate in Spain is still the most attractive sector for foreign capital, although since 2015 - when a record figure of 8,659 million euros was reached investment has fallen. In the first half of 2019, 1,069 million euros were recorded, according to ABC. In the last four years, foreign investors have paid 29 billion euros into Spanish real estate. This activity is undoubtedly the sector that has managed to raise the most money outside the borders of Spain. Next on the list, somewhat further behind, is the logistics industry (not linked to real estate) which contributed 11.3 percent and the supply of electricity and gas at 10.2 percent.

These data reflect the historical importance of the housing market for the Spanish economy. But this trend has begun to show signs of change in recent years. In 2018 it became the second investment option for foreigners and during the first half of 2019 the third preference, signs that real estate may be losing its attraction for capital coming from outside our borders. There are two main reasons for this decline. The first is related to profitability. During the financial crisis, investing in property ensured high returns because the price of assets was at rock bottom and future forecasts predicted a gradual recovery of the sector. This improvement has already begun to peak and has generated a less attractive context for foreign

capital. In addition to this economic outlook, there is also another factor that has damaged this sector outside Spain. The political instability in which the country lives with two general elections in less than six months and no stable government for more than a year is off-putting for foreign investors. This is a situation that, along with the ongoing tensions in Catalonia, has clearly alienated foreign investors. Precisely, the issue of Catalonia's independence has meant that the money destined for real estate travels to Madrid. The facts don’t lie in this regard: between 2016 and 2018, foreign investment in the Madrid real estate sector shot up by 133%. In Catalonia, however, it plummeted by 61 percent.

Practical tips for a healthier and more comfortable home Natural light, tidiness, soft colours in the decoration, ventilation, the temperature and the acoustics are some of the factors that define healthy houses. To try to make yours as healthy as possible. 1. Have plenty of natural light 2. Tidiness and functionality, the keys to decoration 3. Caring for the quality of the indoor air 4. Controlling the temperature 5. Controlling noise Have plenty of natural light Natural light is one of the conditions most highly valued by users when it comes to assessing comfort and wellbeing in a home. How can you enhance the amount of light in your home? Here are some ideas: • Light colours on walls, ceilings, furniture and textile accessories. • Installation of high and large windows with the appropriate orientation (south for maximum sunlight), as well as roof or skylight windows. • Curtains or blinds which are not too thick. • Choose glass tables and doors, sliding doors are especially effective. • Place mirrors in strategic areas. Tidiness and functionality, the keys to decoration Having spaces that are tidy, clean, well-decorated and with comfortable elements is essential for a comfortable

home. That is why it is important to take care of the appearance and layout of the house. Light tones give a feeling of spaciousness, freshness and tranquillity, whereas dark tones provide security; louder colours generate positivity and freshness, warmer tones suggest a feeling of intimacy and comfort, and colder tones are cooler and ideal for relaxation areas. This is particularly key in rooms which could be considerably smaller, such as bathrooms. Find out how to make the most out of a small bathroom. 6 Caring for the quality of the indoor air There are many substances that affect the air quality in a house: pollen, smoke, dust, mites, and odours to name a few. And if we consider that we spend about 20 hours a day indoors, it is important that the quality of the indoor air is as good as possible for our health, especially in 2020 with increasingly worrying amounts of pollution in our towns and cities. How do we achieve this? The key is to use air filtration and purification systems to remove particles and possible contaminants, to rely on controlled mechanical ventilation systems that help renew the indoor air, or to use plants. In addition, today there are solutions such as intelligent paints, capable of providing reliable protection against moisture or harmful substances and prevent the formation of cracks and dirt.

Controlling the temperature According to the Regulations on Thermal Installations in Buildings, the so-called "thermal comfort" establishes that the temperature must be between 23 and 25 degrees, that humidity must be between 40 percent and 60 percent, and that there must be no drafts or gusts of air. To achieve this, experts believe that the most effective solutions aimed at regulating these characteristics are the use of efficient air conditioning systems, thermal insulation, plaster or laminated plaster boards, a good choice of carpentry or the use of temperature and relative humidity control systems and apparatus. Controlling noise In recent times, acoustic comfort has become a key element when renovating or building interior areas, since poor acoustic conditioning can affect the health and well-being of a person, causing sleep disturbance, rest disturbance or headaches. What are the solutions? Apart from the possible need to install acoustic conditioning solutions in the home (paying special attention to the ceilings), it is also recommended that you use decorative elements to muffle sounds, such as carpets, curtains and upholstered furniture, as well as placing the bedrooms in the quieter areas of the house. Another option is to buy appliances that help muffle noise.

Highest population ever Official figures are in for Spain's population as at the start of 2020 – and the country has begun a new decade with its largest headcount ever before. At 47.1 million, this is the highest ever, and the first time the nation has had more than 47 million people living in it. This is largely thanks to immigration, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE), given that the birth rate is currently at its lowest since records began in 1941. The figures are actually only valid up to the middle of 2019, since the exact numbers up to the end of the year are still being calculated, but in the first six months of last year, the population rose by a total of 163,336. Net migration was up at nearly 210,000, although deaths exceeded births by just over 45,000. In the first six months of last year, 169,269 babies were born, but they were not enough to 'replace' the 214,218 people who died, giving a difference of 45,002. But net migration – new immigrants versus those who left the country – was in positive figures, at 209,097. A total of 348,625 new arrivals from foreign countries were recorded, whilst a total of 139,528 people – Spaniards and foreigners – left. This is the highest positive net migration figure since 2008, the first year in which data were collected for this phenomenon, and the year in which the financial crisis began. Rising immigration is nearly always a sign that a country's economy and job market is becoming more healthy,

whilst rising emigration tends to show that, financially, a nation is doing less well, so increasing immigration is, in almost all cases – except in countries bordering conflict zones, which absorb the majority of refugees – positive news for the health of a given territory. Brits are among these new foreign residents – although the threat of Brexit may be leading some British nationals to opt to return to the UK as a precaution, many are choosing to move abroad to escape any possible negative effects of the country's departure from the European Union. As an example, the cosmopolitan coastal town of Dénia in the north of the province of Alicante has reported that Brits are now its largest foreign national community for the first time since the Civil War. At 2.51 percent of its population of just under 44,000, totalling 1,104 residents, British nationals in Dénia have knocked their German counterparts into second place, at 1,068 – and not because Germans are leaving, but because more UK citizens are arriving. Overall, 6,049 British nationals left Spain in the first six months of last year – but relatively few, compared with the 9,396 Moroccans and 16,525 Romanians who left. Once the UK officially leaves the EU at

the end of January, the real effects of its departure will start to be seen on Spain's Brit population, but anecdotal evidence points to the fact that many UK nationals are seeking to bring their long-term plans of retiring to, or working in, Mediterranean countries forward, in case they find it is more difficult to do so later on once Brexit is consummated.

After several consecutive years of population decline, Spain has been growing in resident numbers annually since 2015 – always a sign, in first-world nations, that the country's economic health is improving. Of these, just over five million are foreigners. The total number of non-Spaniards is 5,023,279, although this does not include immigrants who have since taken Spanish citizenship; with more and more Brits expressing their

intention to do this after Brexit, the actual number of foreigners, especially UK nationals, could decline, on paper, in the next few years, but purely because more of them have Spanish passports and are no longer counted as immigrants. The Spanish national population fell in the first half of 2019 by 19,737, largely because of the death rate exceeding the birth rate – the net negative birth-death figure, at 67,195, was not compensated for by the net migration increase of 3,419 among Spanish nationals, nor the 44,654 from other countries who acquired Spanish passports. For the first time since the housing and construction crisis saw huge swathes of Latin Americans returning home as the work which brought them to Spain dried up, Colombians are on the rise – an increase of 27,920 was reported last year – although Ecuadorians, once one of Spain's most numerous foreign communities, continued to decline, down by 1,651. Venezuelans, largely as a result of the turbulent political climate in the South American Caribbean country – leading to many opting to emigrate, or even becoming refugees – are more numerous in Spain now, with an increase of 24,238 in the 'mother country'. Moroccans continue to be Spain's

largest foreign community, thanks to its geographical proximity and historical and cultural ties, with an additional 20,627 reported as living in Spain in the first half of 2019. Romanians reduced in number by 964, but continue to be the largest European Union national group. Venezuelans increased in percentage by 18.1 percent; those from Hondurás by 15.4 percent; from Colombia by 14 percent, and those from Ecuador, Romania and Bulgaria declined by 1.2 percent, 0.1 percent and 0.1 percent respectively. Movement from abroad Overall, those moving from abroad to settle in Spain rose by 21.8 percent year on year, although 11.1 percent of them – 38,751 out of 348,625 – were Spanish nationals, either born abroad and moving to Spain for the first time, or returning migrants. In terms of size of foreign groups, Romanians, followed by Moroccans, then Brits, are statistically the largest, in that order. Population numbers went up in 13 of Spain's 17 autonomously-governed regions – the Balearic Islands led the growth at 0.87 percent, followed by Madrid (0.66 percent) and the Canary Islands (0.61 percent, whilst the four regions where numbers went down were the land-locked western region of Extremadura (by 0.25 percent), the northern coastal region of Asturias (by 0.22 percent), and the centre-northern plains of Castilla y León (by 0.2 percent).

New PM makes pension hike As was expected, Spain’s new coalition government has started its term by announcing good news. The debut measure adopted by the Cabinet, which met recently for the first time ever, was a 0.9 percent rise in pensions, a move that had been on hold until a government could finally be formed. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, who gave a press conference when the Cabinet meeting ended, after weeks of avoiding questions from reporters, stated that the new executive wants to quickly make up for lost time, and plans on seeing out its full four-year term – despite lacking a working majority in Congress and needing the support of other parties if it is to pass legislation and see its budget approved. Sánchez won the 10th November repeat general election but, as at the April polls, fell short of an absolute majority. He managed to win a recent investiture vote in Congress, however, thanks to a coalition agreement between his Socialist Party (PSOE) and leftist Unidas Podemos, the support of a number of smaller parties, and the key abstention of the Catalan Republican Left (ERC). The Prime Minister did not go

into detail about the decisions that will have to be made in the coming days, including a pay rise for civil servants, a rise in the minimum wage and the government’s spending cap. But he did come out in defence of his first major appointment: that of former Justice Minister Dolores Delgado as prosecutor general. The decision has caused

widespread controversy given that the public prosecutor is supposed to operate independently of the government. Opposition politicians and critics say that the move will jeopardize the judiciary’s image of impartiality and make it look as if “there is political interference,” according to Cristina Dexeus, the president of the Asociación de Fiscales prosecutors’ association. The Prime Minister said that Delgado’s résumé is “impeccable” and “unquestionable,” and

explained that he had called on her to “exercise her independence” as prosecutor general. Absent from the press conference today was one of Spain’s new deputy prime ministers, Pablo Iglesias, who is the leader of Unidas Podemos. The coalition deal between the parties came as a surprise after last year’s repeat election, given that such an agreement had proved impossible in the wake of the April polls. What’s more, Sánchez famously stated that he “wouldn’t be able to sleep at night” if he had accepted the demands of Unidas Podemos for a coalition deal. Sánchez insisted he had “no reservations” about Iglesias and the governing agreement. “On the contrary, I’m proud,” the prime minister told reporters. “It’s true that this is an unprecedented experience, but all of the ministers are now from the government of Spain and not from a political party.” Catalonia and the independence drive in the northeastern Spanish region was a key issue among the questions journalists put to Sánchez. The prime minister insisted that he was opting for dialogue and “a political solution to a political problem.”

o aj av N Welcome to Nation Park

Monument Valley is a Navajo Tribal Park (30,000 acres) established in 1958 and located on the border of Arizona and Utah with in the 16 million-acre Navajo Reservation. The Park is about 5,500 feet above seal level and accessible year-round. Temperatures range from an average low of 25 degrees F in the winter to an average high of 90 degrees F in the summer. Rainfall averages eight inches/year. Monument valley is located on US Highway 163 and is 25 miles from Mexican Hat, UT, 51 miles from Bluff, UT and 77 miles from Blanding, UT. It is also 22 miles from Kayenta, AZ and 121 miles from Page, AZ. Navajo Nation Parks & Recreation oversees all Navajo Tribal Parks on the Navajo Nation Reservation. The Navajo Nation is compromised of essentially private lands, therefore all nonNavajo travelers and visitors must abide by and comply with the laws, regulations, and policies promulgated by the Navajo Nation Government, including those governing Navajo Tribal Parks, Monuments, and recreation areas. As you visit the Navajo Tribal Parks, we ask that you keep our Mother Earth clean and place all debris and trash in the trash receptacles. The Mission of the Navajo Parks & Recreation Department is to protect, preserve and manage tribal parks, monuments and recreation areas for the perpetual enjoyment and benefit of the Navajo Nation – the spectacular landscapes, buttes, canyons, clean air, diversity of plants and

wildlife, and areas of beauty and solitude. Before human existence, the Park was once a lowland basin. For hundreds of millions of years, materials that eroded from the early Rock Mountains deposited layer upon layer of sediment which cemented a slow and gentle uplift, generated by ceaseless pressure from below the surface, elevating these horizontal strata quite uniformly one to three miles above sea level. What was once a basin became a plateau. Natural forces of wind and water that eroded the land spent the last 50 million years cutting into and peeling away at the surface of the plateau. The simple wearing down of altering layers of soft and hard rock slowly revealed the natural wonders of Monument Valley today. From the visitor center, you see the worldfamous panorama of the Mitten Buttes and Merrick Butte. You can also purchase guided tours from Navajo tour operators, who take you down into the valley in Jeeps for a narrated cruise through these mythical formations. Places such as Ear of the Wind and other landmarks can only be accessed via guided tours. During the summer months, the visitor center also features Haskenneini Restaurant, which specializes in both native Navajo and American cuisines, and a film/snack/souvenir shop. There are year-round restroom facilities. One mile before the center, numerous Navajo vendors sell arts, crafts, native food, and souvenirs at roadside stands.

They won't forgive me

He's making a huge mistake Our son is 21 and has met a woman who is in her 40s. He says he is serious about her and wants to get married. We are appalled. He told us she was a bit older but did not tell us the whole story which was that she has been married twice before and has three children, one from each marriage, and the other from another relationship. It’s nothing personal - she seems nice enough. He says he wants to be a father one day but we don't see how this will happen. Your son is an adult and is old enough to make his own choices. If you get angry and criticise it may only serve to strengthen his determination. In time he may come to realise that being with someone who is this much older may bring its problems. He will still be a young man when she is in her 60s. Their relationship may last a lifetime, or he may feel differently as he gets older, but it is his choice to make. You can express your worries to him, but don't lose your temper. And then leave him to it, otherwise you may be blamed somewhere down the line.

I left my husband three years ago. The children, who were 14 and 17 at the time stayed with him. The relationship with them afterwards was not good. They blamed me for the break-up, and to be honest it was my doing. Since then, I have split up with my new man. My ex-husband and I have been seeing each other again, and think we want to give it another chance, but our children are not happy for us. They said they saw their Dad go through hell and they are refusing to welcome me back. A situation like this is never going to be easy. I assume your ex husband has talked to them, and asked them to forgive you. It took a long time for them to deal with your leaving, and so it may also take a long time for them to be happy about you returning. If I were you, I wouldn’t be in a rush to move back in to the house until your children have accepted the situation. Time, forgiveness, and a lot of reassuring is needed here.

Ryanair cuts over 200 jobs in Spain Irish no-frills airline Ryanair has cut more than 200 jobs in Spain as it closes three bases in the Canary Islands. The number of job losses is far less than the 512 posts that unions had feared would be lost, however. "There were over 200 dismissals in the Canaries, that was just pilots and cabin crew, no other staff," the airline's human resource director, Darrell Hugues, told a news conference. Ryanair said in August that it would close bases in Tenerife, Lanzarote and Gran Canaria, as well as one in Girona in mainland Spain, leading Spanish union USO to predict that 512 jobs could be lost. In the end Ryanair kept the base in Girona open. The company justified the need to reduce its presence on the ground by delays in the delivery of the grounded Boeing 737 MAX, which it says has left it with more pilots and crew than necessary. "We don't have enough airplanes so we're closing bases," Hugues explained. After the three Canary Islands sites closed last week, Ryanair moved some pilots and cabin

crew who were based there elsewhere in Europe, he added without giving further details. The company did not close its base in Girona after employees there signed new contracts making them seasonal workers, confirming information given by the USOC union last month, Hugues said. Under the new contract the employees are contracted to work nine months of the year instead of 12, which means their annual salaries would be reduced by around 25 percent according to the union. About 100 employees at

Ryanair's base in Girona accepted the new conditions, while those who refused were fired, Hugues said. Ryanair expects to get up to 10 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft in March-April, the airline's marketing director, Kenny Jacobs, said. But it has no plans "at the moment" to reopen the Canary Islands bases once that happens, he added. Ryanair recently raised its annual profit forecast for its current financial year that ends in March, citing strong bookings and a better than expected Christmas and New Year travel period.

Arranging a funeral abroad can be complicated – here’s how to make it simple Find out why it’s worth preplanning your funeral as an expat so you can enjoy your life in the sun Arranging a funeral is a stressful experience, but when you’re navigating a foreign funeral system, it can be even more difficult. When the time comes, will your loved ones know how to arrange a funeral in Spain? The Spanish funeral system can catch many expats unaware. Traditionally, Spanish funerals happen as quickly as 24 to 48 hours after the person passes away. Funerals for expats can take longer, especially if friends and family want to fly out, but this delay could cost hundreds of Euros in extra mortuary expenses. In addition, it’s common for Funeral Directors in Spain to request either part or full payment upfront. Then there’s the language barrier to deal with, along with unfamiliar processes. That’s why it’s so helpful to plan ahead to make things a little easier. Make funeral arrangements

Chemical plant explosion Two people are dead and eight more were injured following two explosions at a chemical plant in Tarragona, in Spain’s northeastern region of Catalonia. The blasts triggered a fire and caused a building to partially collapse. Only one fatality was reported immediately after the incident, but an employee who was missing was found dead the following morning. Another worker remains in critical condition, medical services have reported. The blasts, which were felt several kilometres away, took place at Industrias Químicas de Óxido de Etileno (IQOXE), a company that produces ethylene oxide, a highly flammable gas that is used to make detergents, solvents and plastics, among other products. The first explosion took place at 6.40pm last Tuesday evening at the company plant in the Tarragona neighbourhood of Torreforta, inside La Canonja Petrochemical Park, which is also home to Dow Chemicals Ibérica and the oil and gas multinational Cepsa. The shockwave partially brought down a building located around two kilometres away, killing one person. There was a second blast at a transformation station located at the plant, said

the Catalan head of interior affairs, Miquel Buch. The petrochemical park where the blasts took place is located in the triangle formed by the municipalities of Tarragona, Vilaseca and La Canonja. Civil protection services asked residents of La Canonja, Vilaseca and three Tarragona neighbourhoods to remain indoors, although they said there was no toxic cloud.

The Catalan premier, Quim Torra, visited the area and sent out a similar message: “There is no toxic element.” Spain’s prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, said in a Twitter message that he has offered Torra “all necessary support.” Firefighters were still battling the blaze in the early hours the following morning, and had contained the flames coming out of an ethylene oxide tank where the blast originated. Railway service on the Tarragona-Reus and TarragonaPort Aventura lines was canceled for over an hour on Tuesday, and

roads near the site were cut off until 8pm. Witness account “Suddenly the front door flew open and the glass on the windows started to shake,” said Laura Paño, who works in the nearby town of Vilaseca. “Everyone rushed outdoors because they thought something had happened there. We didn’t hear any sounds. The first thing you think is that there has been an earthquake.” Paño said that nobody came to tell them to what to do. “We are looking at official websites of the Mossos [Catalan police force] and they’re saying we have to stay indoors. The streets are deserted and all the stores have been closed.” “The first thing I thought of was the ETA bomb of 1987,” said Antonio Carmona, who was at a hardware store four kilometers from the site, alluding to an attack on the Enpetrol refinery by the now-defunct Basque terrorist group. “People panicked. We know what it means to live in Vilaseca, but if it had been a chemical explosion, something serious would have happened, because alarms did not go off for 20 or 30 minutes. People were scared and there was a lack of information.”

Property related tax changes in 2019

All transactions are taxed and even more so if they involve real estate. This year there have been several new developments related to property taxes in Spain...

SELLING? 3 REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD ACCEPT THE 1ST OFFER! Rebecca Serwotka Rebecca Serwotka - Your favourite local property expert, of Inmobiliaria Real Estate Agents in Ciudad Quesada & published author of “Moving Forward - 25 Essential Rules For Buying & Selling Real Estate Without Going Crazy.” Request your FREE copy today!Featured on Best Buy Spain - Property TV.

Selling your property? Had any offers? Ever thought how you would feel when you get your first offer? Excited? Nervous? Scared? Many people would be delighted to receive an actual offer on their home, but there are others that tend to second guess themselves when a serious offer is on the table.

2

If you need to close this chapter in your life and move on to the next exciting adventure, you must consider with care your first offer. If it means you can move on with your life, then do it. If you’re moving to get away from old memories, then the longer you keep refusing offers, means the longer you have to stay put. Only you are holding yourself back.

3

. 3.Found your next home? Most sellers are also on the hunt for their next home, and there’s a chance they’ll also find a house before they’ve found a buyer for theirs. If time is of the essence, and you don’t want to lose your next home, then taking the first sensible offer will be the way to move forward. Selling a home is about more than just money, it’s about how smooth the transaction can be, and moving on to the next chapter in your life. Selling your home? Enjoy the journey!

First of all, if the offer is a sensible one, and realistically you could make it work, then don’t look a gift horse in the mouth! You never know when the next offer will come along. Sometimes holding out for a figure that you have in your head, could cost you a sale in the long run. Don’t ask me why, but I have always found that the first offer is usually the best one. Here are 3 reasons why accepting the first offer makes the most sense:

1

Unfortunately when properties remain unsold, buyers automatically assume that something’s wrong with it. You don’t want the property to sit on the market longer than it should be, losing value, as buyers are fully aware how long it’s been up for sale, which could ultimately influence their offer amount. So when that offer is forthcoming, as long as it isn’t a “cheeky” one, this could be your best possible buyer.

Due to a tremendous year of home sales, we are in need of more properties to sell. If you’re ready to sell your home, or have been on the market for sale with no offers, contact me today on 966 718 392 or email: sales@homes4u.es. We ARE the resale specialists. “We sell houses! It’s what we do, it’s all we do!” “It’s what we’re good at!" See our advert in the centre pages of this newspaper. www.homes4u.es

Property Transfer Tax (ITP) Property Transfer Tax (ITP) is a tax that must be paid by the buyer of a second-hand property and varies according to each Autonomous Community in Spain. In early December, the Supreme Court handed down a landmark ruling stating that transfer tax must also be paid by the buyer who acquires a second-hand property when the seller is a private individual. This means that anyone who buys gold from a private individual, or even clothing or other secondhand goods, must pay a transfer tax. Until now, the criteria were that the purchase of gold (and by extension, other movable property) by entrepreneurs from private individuals did not require the payment of tax. Therefore, property transfer tax is no longer paid only for the purchase of a used home or for renting it. However, tax rates vary depending on whether the

property is immovable or movable and on each Autonomous Region. Now, buyers will have to assume the payment of the transfer tax for each of the gold purchases they make from a private individual and the tax rates which, depending on each Autonomous Community, vary from 4 percent to 6 percent. These tax rates are lower than those applied to the purchase of a second-hand property, as they vary from 4percent to 10 percent. There have also been great changes in terms of property transfer tax. The Valencian Community has been the first to stop applying the method of mortgage valuation to check that the taxpayer has paid the transfer tax when buying or inheritance tax when inheriting a home. More specifically, it has not appealed for the reversal of the ruling of the High Court of Justice of the Community of Valencia which annulled the method of verification of "mortgage valuation" values. The Valencian “Generalitat” Government has not appeared before the Supreme Court in the estimated time, so the appeal has been declared void. The

Treasury of the Community of Valencia also complies with the criteria of the ruling of the Supreme Court of Justice, which is now final, and annuls the mortgage valuation method. Furthermore, it opens the door for other autonomous communities to declare this method of checking values in the purchase, inheritance or donation of a home null and void. Property Tax (IBI) The Supreme Court has closed the door on requests for the return of urban property tax (IBI urbano) that was paid for pieces of non-building land plots during 2014 and previous years. In 2014, it was declared that the land which could be developed but had nothing built on it should not pay urban property tax, but rather rural property tax. For this reason, many taxpayers with land for which they paid urban property tax began to pay taxes for nonbuilding plots. They also requested for the nullity of the property tax liquidations paid in previous years. However, the High Court has just closed this avenue for the respite of the city councils.

Writers' Ink Spot

The TellTale Hand by William Hopkins

The weekly short story by Writers' Ink, a dedicated and rapidly expanding group of internationally published and non-published writers who take pleasure in helping and encouraging each other and members of our wider international circle. We meet on the second Monday of each month at 11am in the 'Friendly' Bar, CC Citrus, La Florida, Costa Blanca South. We are more than happy to welcome new budding writers, experienced published Authors or anyone who has an interest in writing to our group.

Father Gerald was loved by everyone, but his sermons were heeded by no one. His cassock, faded to grey from the original black, permanently bore cigarette ash and sometimes evidence of that morning’s breakfast. His church of St Jude had a diminishing congregation and all his communicants were in receipt of bus passes. Occasionally he would be encouraged to undertake confirmation classes for ten-yearolds whose parents always showed “Christian” as their religion on the census form. Having attended their first communion and subsequently the tea party that followed they were never more seen at St Jude’s. Father Gerald supported Hartlepool United and assiduously followed their limited progress in League Two, although he couldn’t name a single player. It had become a Sunday afternoon ritual to look in the Sunday Express for the previous day’s football score and nearly every

time utter a disappointment.

Gerald was one of three sons born to Mr and Mrs Poole, a good Catholic family. Mrs. Poole had always intended that one of her sons would enter the priesthood and Gerald had complied. When they were youngsters, George, the eldest, had decreed that all three brothers should support a football team. George said as their surname was Poole they must support a team bearing the name pool. George as the oldest chose Liverpool, Ted had Blackpool and ‘put-upon’ Gerald was told to support Hartlepool. Every Monday morning Father Gerald hosted a chapter meeting for three other priests in the area. The agenda was always the same. Item One-The Lord’s Prayer. Item Two the amount of yesterday’s collection in each church and Three the number of communicants.

Throughout summer and winter, the main body of the church was bitterly cold, the vestry, with two electric fires, was always snug and warm. As a matter of protocol each priest had a copy of the Bible on the table next to him, always open at the Book of Revelations. One day the Dean of the Diocese felt obliged to visit Father Gerald. As every group of parishes held their chapter meetings on a Monday He decided to call unannounced and join the serious discussion of liturgy and theology which was expected from each Chapter. He opened the front door of St Jude’s and quietly made his way towards the vestry, expecting to hear profound arguments for and against religious points of view. What he heard came as a complete surprise “Two spades” followed by ”Four hearts” and “Six diamonds”. Intending to jolt the bridge playing priests out of their cigarette smokeinduced enjoyment, the Dean grabbed the bell-rope and pulled it four times. The priests jumped out of their skins and a minute later the landlord from the pub opposite came in with a tray of four-pint glasses of beer. “Didn’t know there was an extra one today, I’ll bring yours over now Father” AND SO IT WAS thereafter, the Dean spent every Monday morning at St Jude’s. ©William Hopkins

Campoverde Theatre Group donates €300 Let’s Dance! to the Alzheimer's Society Torrevieja Following the very successful supper show, Supper on the West End the Campoverde Theatre Group were delighted to present a cheque for 300€ to the Alzheimer’s Society, Torrevieja. David and Lorraine Whitney accepted the cheque on behalf of the Alzheimer’s Society, a charity close to their hearts. Campoverde Theatre Group is all too aware of the devastation Alzheimer’s disease has not only for the individual but also on their family, friends and support groups. The members of the Campoverde Theatre Group are very busy rehearsing for their next production, Crazy Little Thing Called Love which will be staged at the Olympia Restaurant, Mil Palmeras on 20th to the 22nd February. The show takes a light hearted and humorous look at love from teenage crushes to meeting that right person to relationship tensions, finally concluding that the phrase Crazy Little Thing Called Love is totally correct. The story of love

is portrayed through song, dance and some very funny sketches. The show has great music that will have the audience singing along to, and Jo Rich has again penned some very original sketches that highlight the funny side of relationships. Following our popular formula,

Crazy Little Thing Called Love will be another supper show where patrons can enjoy a one course meal plus an evening of entertainment. Don’t miss out, tickets can be reserved by phoning Maureen on 966 789 587 or mobile 603 273 364 or calling in to The Olympia Bar and Restaurant Mil Palmeras.

Order your tickets for a great evening of entertainment with a variety of dance produced by Sue Gibson and performed by her and some of her Suzi4fitz ladies from her fitness and dance classes. The show is compered by the fantastic Graeme Mykal who will also be performing some of his excellent magic and illusions on stage. The ladies have been working hard rehearsing their moves and are looking forward to performing on the two nights Thursday 12th and Friday 13th March at Los Montesinos Music School Auditorium. Show starts at 7pm and doors open from 6.30pm. Tickets are 8 Euros and 10 Euros Tickets can be ordered by phoning 623339046 or by email— ’tickets.suzi4fitz@gmail.com’

Or facebook page ‘Suzi4fitz Show “Let’s Dance” Tickets can be collected from las Ramblas Golf Club (Ring to arrange a time ) or collected on the door of the Theatre on the night This is the 3rd show from Suzi4fitz in Los Montesinos. Please come and support us as the proceeds are going to be donated to Social Services to hand out much needed vouchers to families who need some help at Christmas 2020. So far the group has donated 9000 euros from the proceeds of their 3 shows and other charity events. Last year the bulk of the donation was used to buy two hospital beds and 3 walking frames along with the food vouchers.

Charity Shop Sale

Every Christmas and New Year, local charities see a dip in donations and sales at charity shops also drop due to people spending the holidays in their native countries and Red Day closures. In order to kick start the new year and to sell some of the considerable amount of winter clothing donated, animal charity APAH is holding a huge Winter Clothing Sale. Is hoped the sale will not only raise some much needed funds but will also free up some space in the shop and its store room. The sale is now on at the APAH Charity Shop in San Miguel de Salinas and despite being located in the same spot for nine years, some people are still

discovering its bargains for the first time. The shop is located in Calle San Miguel, and is open from 10.00 until 14.00 Monday to Saturday. The shop is marked by a yellow sign outside, which can be seen from quite a way off and is near to the Tabacos and book store. APAH (The Asociacion Protectora de Animales Horadada) became a registered association in 2000. It receives no official funding, and carries out its work through money raised in its charity shops donations and fund raising events. The shops are the charities life blood and its is always looking for volunteers who can give up a little free time to help

it to continue to rescue animals in need. Some of our animals are rescued from terrible conditions and in a pitiful state. Some are confused and traumatised because their owners and families have abandoned them to an uncertain future. All animals are micro-chipped, vaccinated and neutered and no animal rescued by APAH is ever euthanized. If an animal rescued by the charity is not adopted into a new home, as long as APAH exists, it will always have a home. To date APAH has re-homed in the region of 2500 cats and dogs.

Little Women star Florence Pugh, 24, shares a kiss with boyfriend Zach Braff, 44, as they toast her Oscar nomination with a bottle of champagne. Florence is up for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Amy March. Greta Gerwig's version of Louisa May Alcott's Little Women has proved popular with critics and cinema-goers alike. Saoirse Ronan, 25, is also up for Best Actress for her role as Jo March. Bradley Walsh, 59, reveals he broke his BACK in THREE PLACES after being flung from a bull while filming at an American rodeo. The Chase frontman revealed he broke his back in three places while filming his hit series Bradley Walsh and Son: Breaking Dad alongside his son Barney. He confessed that while living his life-long dream of bull-riding at an American rodeo, he actually broke three bones in his back. While he played down the injury, it

still seemed as though the star, 59, was in considerable danger after the perilous fall. Having fallen off the bull and landing on his back, Bradley went to the Southview Hospital in Kettering, Dayton to be treated. The stunned star discovered he had broken his transverse process L3, his transverse process L4 and his transverse process L5. A religious experience! Victoria Beckham shares snap of her avocado

and toast - made with a £6 LOAF of Ezekiel 4:9 bread that takes its recipe straight from the Bible Victoria posted a photo of her conventional breakfast on Wednesday morning. The former Spice Girl used wholegrain Ezekiel 4:9 bread, worth £5.95 a loaf. The loaf, made from sprouted grains, is only available from Amazon store. Anyone looking to buy will also have to spend an unholy £2.99 in charges.

Ramsay to launch new BBC show Outspoken chef Gordon Ramsay has announced the launch of a new cooking show for the BBC, and it doesn't sound too dissimilar from The Apprentice. Gordon Ramsay's Future Food Stars will be an eight-part competition which sees the TV host on the hunt for entrepreneurial talent. The 53-year-old even put out a call for contestants on his Twitter page where he urged those with the next "big, bold and exciting food or drink business idea" to sign up.

Elaborating on his involvement in the show, Ramsay said in a video: "I'm investing my time, my money to take the next product, app, food truck or something completely new to the next level and you don't even need to be a chef. He said: “Hey UK! I’m now casting for my new @BBCOne show! To express an interest, please email foodstars@studioramsay.com Applicants must be aged 18+ by 1st May 2020 and have the right to live and work in the UK.

"Your business may be in development. That's how exciting this new series is." He went on to add he was seeking contestants with "passion, drive and very strong work ethic". The programme is due to feature 12 participants in total. Ramsay has plenty of television experience on UK television with the series Hell's Kitchen, The F Word, and Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares under his belt. He also made a splash in the US when he took Hell's Kitchen and Kitchen

Nightmares across the pond as well as appearing on US versions of MasterChef and MasterChef Junior. Outside of his career, there was good news for Ramsay in his personal life last year as he welcomed another child with wife Tana Ramsay. Although, he admitted he "fainted like an idiot" when the tot, Oscar, was born in April 2019. His birth came after the couple, who are already parents to Megan, Holly, Jack, Matilda, suffered a miscarriage in 2016.

CRISPY ORANGE TOFU Ingredients Crispy Baked Tofu: Two blocks extra-firm tofu 3 tablespoons olive oil, OR low sodium soy sauce for oil free 2 tablespoons cornflour

Sticky Orange Sauce: 235ml vegetable stock 124ml fresh squeezed orange juice, from 2-3 large oranges 160 g organic sugar (may sub coconut sugar, brown sugar or pure maple syrup) 85ml rice vinegar 64 ml low sodium soy sauce 3 cloves garlic, crushed 2 teaspoons grated fresh ginger (or 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger) 1 teaspoon Sriracha hot sauce, or to taste 2 tablespoons cornflour 60ml water

For serving: cooked rice 2-3 tablespoons chopped green onions

Method For the Crispy Baked Tofu: Press the tofu by wrapping in paper towels (or a clean dry tea towel). Place a plate or pan on top of the wrapped tofu, and put a couple of heavy books on top of that. Let the tofu press for at

least 30 minutes if possible and up to an hour. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees C and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or spray with oil. Slice the tofu into 1 inch cubes and add them to a large ziplock bag, along with the olive oil (or soy sauce) and cornflour. Close the bag, and shake gently to coat the tofu pieces. Arrange the tofu evenly on the prepared pan, and bake for 15 minutes. Flip and bake for 15 more minutes, until the tofu pieces are crispy and lightly golden brown. Remove from oven. For the Orange Sauce: In a large pan (large enough to fit the tofu and sauce), add all sauce ingredients except the cornsflour and water. Bring to a boil, and cook for a minute or two. Mix the cornflour and water in a small bowl to combine, and then add to the pot. Stir over medium-high heat constantly for a couple of minutes, until the sauce thickens. Now add the baked tofu to the pan and stir to coat the tofu in the sauce. Remove from heat. Serve over brown or white rice. Sprinkle with green onions and/or sesame seeds. Add a side of steamed broccoli or cauliflower if desired.

VEGAN CHOCOLATE CAKE Method

Ingredients 300ml plant based milk (soy, almond etc...) 1 tbsp lemon juice (or apple cider vinegar or white vinegar) 150g vegan margarine/butter 3 tbsp golden/agave/maple syrup (use your favourite liquid sweetener...maple will make a slightly less sweet cake) 1 tsp instant coffee granules /espresso powder (OPTIONAL) 275g plain (all purpose) flour 175g sugar 4 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder 3 tsp baking powder 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda (baking soda)

For the vegan chocolate frosting (double the amount here to cover the sides as well) 75g vegan margarine/butter 200g powdered icing sugar 4 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder 2 tbsp water

Preheat the oven to 180° C/160° C fan Lightly grease 2x20cm/8inch round baking pans. Stir the lemon juice (or vinegar) into the milk and set aside to thicken and 'curdle' slightly into buttermilk. In a pan over a medium heat, melt the margarine, syrup and coffee granules together. Set aside to cool slightly. Sieve the flour, cocoa, sugar, baking powder and bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) into a large mixing bowl and whisk together. Pour the milk and melted margarine mixture over the flour mixture and stir well until it becomes a smooth batter. Divide the mixture between the two prepared pans and bake for 30-35 minutes or until an inserted skewer comes out clean. Allow the cakes to cool in the tins for 5 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely. Meanwhile, to make the icing beat together all ingredients until smooth. When the cakes are completely cold, sandwich together with half of the icing. Spread the remaining icing over the top of the cake.

Is it the end of the full English breakfast? The full English breakfast could soon be a thing of the past, a new study has found. The research says that the classic English fry up could die out within a generation, as almost one in five Brits under 30 have never had a full English breakfast. The nationwide survey found that 27 per cent of the 2,000 participants aged 18 to 30 said black pudding was the most unappealing thing about a traditional fry up. A quarter (24 percent) of respondents said a fry up was ‘too greasy’ and 42 percent said it ‘reminded them of men in vests hanging around in transport cafes’. The greasy bacon, ‘lukewarm’ baked beans and processed sausages were also factors that put young Brits off the classic and 71 percent of respondents said they would rather have

smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, smashed avocado on toast and oatmeal pancakes for breakfast. Ellie Glason, Director of polling firm Ginger Research, who commissioned the study said in a statement: “The study found also that over half of young adults believe Britain is becoming more health conscious and shunning traditional English meals like

fried breakfasts, bangers and mash and pie and chips.” Items in a full English breakfast can differ depending on where in the UK you live, but common items include bacon, eggs, sausages, baked beans, fried tomatoes, fried mushrooms, black pudding and toast. The breakfast dates back to the 1800s where Victorians served it to display wealth and hospitality.

Kiwi and ham pizzas exist and Twitter can't cope Ham and pineapple pizzas have to be one of the most divisive foods on the planet. I personally can’t get enough of the legend that is the Hawaiian pizza, but I’m aware that I’m very much in the minority, and that I will almost definitely get mocked mercilessly about this on Twitter. But even if you believe that pineapple has every right to be on a pizza, you may struggle with the idea of other fruits nuzzling in amongst all that lovely melted cheese, especially if that fruit is a

kiwi. Yes, believe it or not, a ham and kiwi fruit pizza exists. According to a post on Reddit, a Danish pizzeria has created such a thing. And after a photo of said-pizza was shared on Twitter, things took a nasty turn. Comments on the post include: "Is... is that kiwi?... what unholy monster unleashed this evil before me?!" "The road to hell begins somewhere, I blame pineapple on pizza. It's just never enough,

the libs take everything too far." "Wah?!?? Surely you jest!" "Is that a giant petri dish?" "The Antichrist has come and he ordered that pizza." "I've been saying for years... Pineapple was just a gateway topping. Now look where we are..." Not everyone was shocked and appalled by this pizza though – a few people were keen to try it. But the general consensus was thanks, but no thanks.

Avocado and quinoa soar in popularity McDonald’s menu shake up loses three popular items as children's palates change Teatime favourites such as fish fingers and chips could soon be a dish of the past – as children are now more likely to tuck into non-dairy milks and even quinoa. Research commissioned by cereal manufacturer Kellogg's has revealed the palate of Generation Z, those born after the mid 1990s, has evolved to become far more varied than their parents. Dietician Laura Clark, who worked on the study, said: “It is common for parents to unwittingly pass their own food beliefs and biases onto their kids but research such as this suggests kids are biting back, demanding healthy choice and diversity. s we travel and dine out more, our taste buds are being exposed at a younger age to a diverse variety of foods and therefore, our palates are adjusting accordingly” Changing tastes Teatime favourites such as fish fingers and chips could soon be a dish of the past - as children are now more likely to tuck into non-dairy milks and even quinoa. Research commissioned by cereal manufacturer Kellogg's has revealed the palate of Generation Z, those born after the mid 1990s, has evolved to become far more varied than their parents. Dietician Laura Clark, who worked on the study, said: “It is common for parents to unwittingly pass their own food beliefs and biases onto their kids but research such as this suggests kids are biting back, demanding healthy choice

and diversity. "As we travel and dine out more, our taste buds are being exposed at a younger age to a diverse variety of foods and therefore, our palates are adjusting accordingly” Healthy choices appear to be driving the evolution in food preferences with sweet potato leading the way being 42 per cent more popular with children than parents, closely followed by blueberries at 35 per cent and then mango at 29 per cent. Also making it into the top ten of favoured foods for the new generation are quinoa or couscous which is 21 percent more popular with children than parents and alternative milks which are 20 percent more well-liked. More than half of parents (57 percent) admitted their child eats more fruit and vegetables than they did when young, with a third of children eating vegetables with almost every meal. Ms Clark said: "We can see from this research that compared to their parents, children are embracing plant-based alternatives to dairy, wholegrains rich in protein, such as quinoa and alternative sources of protein, for example edamame beans. "The younger generation will continue to demand more from the foods they

consume, both in terms of sustainability and authenticity about the ingredients they contain and the health benefits they provide, from now and in the future." Apples topped the list of preferred snacks with children choosing it over biscuits and cake which only made it to 11th and 14th place. The survey of 2,000 British parents with school age children was conducted for Kellogg's to mark the launch of its new breakfast cereal, W.K Kellogg for Kids. It will be the first to feature both fruit and vegetables with two flavours available: strawberry, apple and carrot or blueberry, apple and beetroot.

McDonald's is axing three favourites from its menu this month. The switch up comes after the fast-food chain's 'Appy Days promotion , which sees the restaurant drop 23 deals in 24 days. And while customers have been able to grab favourites such as Cheese Melt Dippers for free and Spicy McNuggets for 99p, soon they'll no longer be a menu option. McDonald's regularly shakes up the menu to make room for new products

or the return of old classics. Last year saw the short return of the Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese, last on the menu in 2006, as well as a range of famous McFlurries. It's likely there'll be more on the way from McDonald's in 2020, but in the meantime the fast-food chain is axing the following items for now as their promotions come to an end:

Cheese Melt Dippers: The festive treat is stuffed with Camembert and were only launched for the Christmas period. Customers have been able to get them as a four pack or 12 bites in a sharebox. The Big Tasty and Big Tasty with Bacon: Also part of the Christmas 2019 menu, the Big Tasty is making its departure.

Spicy McNuggets: The Chicken McNuggets with a bite were a new release for 2019, first hitting the

All of the above items are being discontinued on January 28, as previously stated by McDonald's, or until stocks last. This means you have less than two weeks to get your hands on them.

Drinks that are secretly ruining your teeth We know that water is good and soft drinks are bad. But what about other drinks? We’d like to think we make informed choices – but did you know that some drinks, which may seem like healthy choices for your body, are actually ruining your teeth at the same time? What’s good for the gut might not be so good for the mouth. The main culprits are primarily two ingredients: sugar and acid. Sugar causes teeth to rot (decay), while acid erodes the outer layer of your teeth (enamel) - both of which can lead to pain and sensitivity. Most of us already know this, but it’s the fact that these ingredients are often hidden or masked behind ‘healthy’ drinks that can make it confusing. What’s worse, many of these drinks are consumed throughout the day – this frequency of consumption makes it doubly damaging, as teeth are essentially ‘bathed’ in sugar/acid all day long!

It’s not to say that we should eliminate these drinks from our diet, but as with all things, moderation is key. You can minimise the effects by some simple tips such as drinking through a straw. After consuming these drinks, it is beneficial to rinse your mouth with some tap water, or chew some sugar-free gum, as this will help neutralise the acids. In addition, try not to brush immediately after, as your enamel is more porous and may be damaged by the action of the bristles of the toothbrush – wait for at least an hour to allow time for the acids to neutralise. Fruit Juice We all know that fruit is good for us, and many of us might enjoy a daily glass of orange juice with our breakfast. However, oranges and other citrus fruits such as lemons, grapefruits, as well as pineapple, contain high sugar and acidity levels.

In liquid form, these drinks quickly coat your teeth in acid and sugar, which can lead to an increased risk of enamel erosion, teeth sensitivity and tooth decay. The better alternative is a whole piece of fruit (e.g. apple or banana), which is healthier than because it contains less sugar and acid, and more nutrients such as fibre. Coffee / Tea Most of us can’t get through the day without at least a cup (or two) of coffee or tea. But did you know that coffee is also acidic? This daily exposure to acid can cause enamel to erode away slowly, increasing sensitivity in your teeth. Furthermore, if you are used to having sugar in your coffee/tea, the sustained daily exposure to sugar can quickly lead to tooth decay. Try a sugar-free alternative instead if you like to sweeten your daily cup.

Sports / Energy Drinks We know that exercising is essential to our well-being. But did you know that sports and energy drinks often contain just as much acid and sugar as soft drinks? You might think that drinking these products gives you a boost in your energy levels, but they are damaging your teeth at the same time. What’s worse, if you are sipping on these drinks constantly, whether it’s during a sports match or a late night out, the sipping maintains high levels of sugar and acid in your mouth, increasing the risk of sensitivity and decay. At the end of the day, water is the best form of hydration for the body as well as your teeth. Lemon / Apple Vinegar Water A popular way to ‘detox’ or ‘cleanse’ the body is a daily a glass of lemon water or apple vinegar in the morning, or throughout the day. The issue is that

both lemons and vinegar are highly acidic, and, when frequently ingested throughout the day, can quickly lead to heightened levels of teeth sensitivity. Wine Drinking is often seen an integral part of socialising, whether it’s going for afterwork drinks, celebrating an event or simply as an accompaniment to a meal. Wine, in particular, has recently been spruiked as a healthy choice because of its antioxidant properties. However, that distinctive tart flavour in wine is due to the high levels of acids contained, with white wines having a higher level than red wines. The fermentation process also introduces varying amounts of sugar – dessert wines, in particular, are high in sugar. Alcohol also dries out the mouth by reducing salivary flow, increasing the risk of tooth decay.

Lactose intolerance Ice cream, cheese, coffee with cream: Many of life's edible pleasures contain dairy in some way, shape, or form—and those pleasures may lead to discomfort for more than half of the entire human race. The majority of human beings—about 65 percent - are somewhat unable to digest lactose. Latose is a sugar that’s found in dairy products. The body breaks it down by way of a substance called lactase. Cells found in the small intestine are responsible for producing lactase, and when the body doesn't produce enough lactase to properly break down lactose, lactose as known it's malabsorption. When you start showing symptoms due to your body's lactose malabsorption, that's known as lactose intolerance. That's because those with lactose malabsorption still technically produce enough lactase for their bodies to break down lactose well enough not to experience symptoms. Here are the symptoms of lactose intolerance, and when to know if you need to cut dairy out of your life for good. What are lactose intolerance symptoms? The symptoms of lacose intolerance typically come on a few hours after ingesting dairy products include:

• • • • • • •

abdominal pain diarrhoea gas nausea bloating stomach “growling” or rumbling sounds vomiting

The first three—diarrhoea, gas, and abdominal pain—are the most common symptoms. But why do they happen? According toexperts, when that undigested lactose makes its way to your colon, bacteria that live there break it down, creating extra fluid and gas that your body has to expel. So, what can you do about lactose intolerance? Doctors diagnose lactose intolerance a few different ways. Most of the time it’s clinical diagnosis. Patients will say something along the lines of,

“Every time I have milk in my coffee, I get these symptoms.” When patients explain that, it signals to the physician that it could be a lactose issue. Your doctor may also ask you to keep a food diary. Writing down what you eat might make you more aware of what’s causing your stomach to hurt. Additionally, your doctor might perform an endoscopy (a procedure in which your doctor sticks a camera down your throat to get a better look at your gastrointestinal tract) during the diagnostic process. The good news is that even if you have a lactose intolerance, the condition is easily managed. As you probably guessed, it consists of limiting or eliminating lactose-containing foods. Luckily, lactose intolerance is “not a super dangerous disease to have—just inconvenient.”

Benefits of giving up alcohol Dry January always seems like a good idea. That is, until your other half pressures you to “share a bottle”, your “January baby” best friend starts guilttripping you or, let’s face it, you’ve just had a tough day at work. With so many others doing Dry January, it’s likely you’re not the only one struggling. While we don’t have an estimate for the number of us doing Dry January for 2020, it’s likely similar to the estimated 4.2 million of us jumping on the sober bandwagon for the first month of 2019. The initiative, run by Alcohol Change UK, is intended to help its followers change their relationship with alcohol – undoubtedly a positive step forward. But whether you make it through the month or not can be a different matter altogether – with temptations and triggers seemingly everywhere the minute you give up. We already know giving up alcohol for a month could leave you richer, slimmer and healthier – but if you’re in need of some more reasons to maintain your break with Pinot, then please, read on. The unexpected benefits of giving up alcohol Let’s start with a big aesthetic benefit: your complexion. Drinking alcohol is “one of the worst things you can do to your skin,” according to experts. Drinking can leave your skin dehydrated – making fine lines and wrinkles appear more visible – and duller in tone. It can also contribute to conditions such as rosacea. However, on a more optimistic note, your skin begins to regenerate in as little

as an hour after drinking alcohol – as your body starts to eliminate the toxins. Drinking a lot of water can help expedite these effects. After just a couple of days rosacea won’t seem quite as bad but it’s really after seven days when you start to see real signs of improvement when skin looks less dry, the under eye area appears less puffy, and skin conditions such as dandruff, eczema, and rosacea begin to improve. The healthy glow starts to appear and lines and wrinkles look less pronounced. After a month, skin will look more radiant and generally healthier looking. The alcohol bloat will have almost gone in the face and in place a more youthful appearance. You protect your senses Giving up alcohol for a month – and developing a healthier attitude towards it in the future – can benefit both your sight and hearing. Excessive alcohol consumption can lead to many health issues, for your eye health this can include increasing the risk of macular degeneration. Additionally, changes in blood pressure caused by alcohol reduce how many nutrients and how much oxygen the optic nerve receives, and changes in levels of B12, or thiamine, can also damage vision. There are also some studies which suggest that excessive drinking can lead to an increased risk of cataracts, which is a condition that makes the clear lens of the eye go cloudy or opaque. Binge-drinking also poses problems for your hearing, too. High alcohol

consumption over a long period of time, much like the festive season, can result in damage to the central auditory cortex of the brain which can then lead to brain shrinkage,” says Specsavers Chief Audiologist Gordon Harrison. “The damage to the auditory nerve then adds up, meaning even moderate drinkers are at risk.” In the long term, this result in hearing loss, he adds. You feel better when you wake up We often refer to a small alcoholic drink before bed as a “night cap”. Yet, while it’s true alcohol can help us fall asleep, it vastly reduces the quality of this sleep – meaning we’re more likely to wake up groggy. Alcohol blocks REM sleep, and this is when we file and process information. Giving up alcohol gives you cleaner and deeper sleep in which you wake up feeling more mentally sharp as you've had those vital brain organising phases of sleep. You are also likely to wake up with “more energy” after this deep sleep. Going alcohol-free can also have beneficial sleep effects for menopausal women, who will likely experience less hot flushes at night. Alcohol can increase the frequency and intensity of hot menopausal hot flushes because of the effect on the nervous system and adrenaline levels. You feel happier Drinking alcohol often has an emotional connection. We’ll celebrate with a chilled glass of champagne, or “drown our sorrows” with a Guinness. But giving it up for January could have a

positive effect on your mood. Alcohol contains ethanol which is a known depressant so whilst it may at first seem that consumption makes you feel better and more relaxed - that feeling is due to the lessening of your inhibitions rather than true physical relaxation. What’s more, as an “addictive substance”, alcohol tends to act as a suppressant – covering up any anxieties and fears you may have. This means that, come the morning, not only are you dealing with a hangover, you're also dealing with the effects of the sudden return of all your thoughts, feelings and emotions. Breaking this negative cycle with dry January could help you feel more positive and refreshed. You make better food choices While we hoped it would be a habit we left back in our university years, it remains the case that we’re guilty of the odd ill-advised meal choice after a few drinks – whether that’s over-indulging on a side of chips at dinner or making a late-night stop via that kebab place. Research by Buffalo University confirmed what we all know is true – finding that we tend to gravitate to salty snack foods and pizza rather than milk, dairy

products, grains and vegetables after drinking. Not only is this food unhealthy, but it’s also laden with calories: one study found that men consume, on average, 730 calories after a night of drinking, while women consume 715. It stands to reason, then, that giving up alcohol temporarily helps you avoid this uninhibited mode of eating – meaning you’re likely to make choices that are better for your body. Your dental health improves Drinking alcohol may make you feel merry, but it won’t help your smile. Regular consumption of alcohol, which is generally sweetened with sugar, can lead to tooth decay, holes or cavities, according to dentists. Then there’s the acid content of alcoholic drinks – particularly Prosecco and white wine, but also spirits such as gin – which strips teeth of their enamel, thinning and weakening them. As if this isn’t enough, alcohol also dehydrates teeth and gums through reducing saliva flow – an effect which could encourage decay and gum disease.

Healthy habits for happiness Happiness is our holy grail and our measure of a life well lived - not to mention the topic of countless books, TED Talks, and apps. But what exactly are we searching for? Scientists devoted to answering that question define happy people as those who have a positive temperament, social confidants, and the resources to make progress toward the goals they value.

Happiness Hurdle: Our Primal Brain There's a little thing called the negativity bias. Thousands of years ago, it gave humans an advantage: We were ever-ready to dodge life-and-death danger. Now it means we're hardwired to notice and store negative experiences more than positive ones. A single critical comment can knock the wind out of an otherwise great day.

Pausing for a minute to appreciate something sweet or beautiful helps us override the negativity bias. To get in the habit, experts suggest taking a photo each day of something that makes you smile and laugh, or feel lucky and loving: your sleeping child, an incredible meal, a pink sunset, your funniest old friend. Then, at the end of the week look at them again all

together. It refocuses your attention on the positive, meaningful parts of the day, and shifts it away from stress and negativity. Happiness Hurdle: Going It Alone Isolating yourself is a surefire way to feel down. The happiest people have rich and satisfying relationships, according to 2002 and 2018 studies. A strong social network is a win-win. You can overcome this hurdle by reaching out to others. That doesn't mean you have to cram your calendar full. An easy starting point is to try opening conversations with an optimistic comment, instead of "I'm so tired," or ask your kids, "What was the best part of your day?" rather than the rote "How was your day?" The shift is subtle but can foster an immediate positive connection. Happiness Hurdle: Living in 2021 The ring. The raise. The last seven pounds. We can all fall into the trap of thinking we'll be happy the minute X, Y, or Z happens. The problem is that this pushes happiness into the future. When you focus in the present instead, you get your brain to concentrate on what is working in your life. Instead of constantly thinking ahead, try to stay in the moment. The idea of centring yourself is at the core of mindfulness meditation, which has been shown to increase activity in the left part of the frontal region of the brain, the area responsible for positive emotions like optimism. Experts suggest waking up with a "53-1-1" practice. While still in bed, take Continued on page 45

Continued from page 44 five big, deep breaths. Think of three things you're grateful for. Smile one real smile, and set one intention for your day. Habits like this pay big dividends. Not only can being more present give you a sunnier outlook, it also may help improve your energy level and your performance at work; it's even been shown to up students' test scores. Happiness Hurdle: The SocialMedia Vortex "Compare and despair" is no joke. It's easy to look up from a long scroll thinking that everyone's life is a party but yours. We don't need experts to tell us this habit is eroding our self-esteem. A 2017 study published in Journal of Affective

Disorders found that the more time 18-to-22-year-olds spent on social media, the more likely they were to have symptoms of anxiety. Set aside time daily to disconnect each day. Start with small increments; even 10 minutes counts. Then work up to being phone-free for the first half-hour of the morning, at meals, and during the last hour before bed, since both your phone's lighting and its irresistible pull detract from quality sleep - a must-have for combating anxiety and stress. Happiness Hurdle: Spinning Our Wheels We all feel stuck sometimes in an unfulfilling job, a draining relationship, or just a "meh" state of mind. It turns out that means

45

we might be striving for the wrong things. People who shoot for personal pleasures (or extrinsic goals), such as fame and wealth, are demonstrably less happy than those who seek personal growth, relationships, and community (intrinsic goals). Topple this hurdle by finding a purposes. Think of what drives you in various areas of your life your personal, family, work, and community roles. We have complex lives, we don't care about just one thing. A multipurpose mind-set helps us prioritise and find balance. When we catch ourselves glued to our email and ignoring our family, we can think, is this really serving my purpose here? Then we can turn back to things that do - the stuff that truly makes us feel happy.

Replacement Logbook Application If you have lost your Spanish logbook, or if it has become damaged beyond use, you can now apply for a replacement online using your electronic ID, digital signature or Cl@ve. The logbook, or permiso de circulación, and the ITV card, are both mandatory documents which must be carried in the vehicle in Spain. There are future exemptions for vehicles which will have digital ITV cards, but for the most, the paper documents are still required. However, because they are made of paper, they can easily become damaged or lost. It is important to note that only the original documents, or those certified by a Notary are acceptable, you can´t simply photocopy them yourself. In order to make it easier to obtain a replacement, the DGT has now provided the facility to apply for a duplicate online using your digital signature or approved electronic identity. The permiso de circulaciónis the document that identifies the ownership of any type of vehicle - including special vehicles, agricultural and works and

services. You can request a duplicate in cases of theft, deterioration or loss. You can request the renewal in the case of change of data (name, surname, company name, change of service, reform of importance, etc.). Before making the duplicate or renewal, you must make sure that your vehicle has no restriction to drive. To do this, access the reduced report of your vehicle. If the result of the consultation indicates that you have Incidents, it is recommended that you consult the nearest Provincial Headquarters or request a detailed report of the vehicle in order to know the details and resolve them. Only a vehicle without incidents can continue with the duplicate request. If what has changed is the municipality in which you are registered, what you must do is a change the registered address of your vehicle. You may also have to change the address on your driving licence, if you have moved. The ITV card or data sheet is the document that proves that the vehicle is

approved to travel on the roads. These cards are issued by ITV stations, if you need a duplicate of that, you must request it at any ITV station. However, if your vehicle has the electronic ITV card or eITV, then the duplicate can be provided by the trafico offices. How to apply for the duplicate: 1. Online - Only for cases of duplicate due to loss, theft or deterioration of the permiso de circulación. This can be done through the web portal: https://sedeclave.dgt.gob.es/WEB_REL W/web/asunto/DUPV The new permit will be sent directly by mail to the address you indicate in the "Modo de notificación" section. You will receive it in approximately two weeks from the receipt of the application. 2. In person -Delivering all documentation at any traficooffice (Alicante or Elche are the closest). In this case, you need to request an appointment online or by calling 060. 3. In Post offices -You can request the duplicate in the commercial network of Correos for cases of loss, deterioration or

TECH NEWS Did you see the satellite train? If you had your eyes trained skywards over the Costa Blanca last week you might have seen a spectacular satellite train make its way across the sky. The phenomenon is thanks to SpaceX which has launched the world’s largest active satellite constellation. Currently, SpaceX has 180 satellites in orbit around earth and as part of its ambitious plan to provide internet capability to every inch of the planet, plans to launch up to 42,000 satellites over the next ten years. That is about 21 times the number of all operational satellites currently in space. The true potential impact of this satellite mega-constellation is still a mystery and many in the space community have expressed concern about the project’s potential side effects. Perhaps the biggest outcry has come from astronomers who view Starlink, as the project is called, as a huge threat to their work. Satellites are already an impediment to capturing images of the night sky, so having even more satellites in orbit around Earth could significantly hinder their ability to view distant objects in the Universe. Meanwhile, the community of people involved in tracking satellites are more concerned with how these new spacecraft will

influence an already fairly crowded space environment. Space debris already creates an intricate space highway of crisscrossing lanes of traffic in orbit, dominated by satellites moving at many thousands of miles per hour. Adding more will up the risk of collision and could make launching to space much more difficult in the future. SpaceX has heard the complaints of concerned scientists and satellite watchers. The company has taken some steps to mitigate the astronomy problems that many fear, and it has also released more data about the positioning of its satellites to help with tracking. Meanwhile, SpaceX continues to launch its Starlink satellites, 60 spacecraft at a time. Expertly tracking the Starlink satellites — and all satellites, for that matter — is key to ensuring these vehicles don’t accidentally run into one another. The main resource for satellite tracking is the US Air Force’s Space Surveillance Network, which is responsible for keeping tabs on everything in orbit using an array of ground-based sensors. The problem is that the Air Force’s tracking data isn’t always precise. It creates estimated orbits by taking periodic measurements of objects as they pass overhead; it can’t track them directly. For expert satellite trackers, the best way to understand where something is in space is to combine the Air Force’s estimates with

positioning data gathered by the satellite itself. Together, this data can provide a clearer view of where a satellite truly is in the sky. After complaints about lack of information (and an embarrassingly close encounter with a European satellite), SpaceX is sharing more data since its most recent launch earlier this month. In advance of the January 2020 launch, SpaceX shared its estimates of the basic direction, speed, and location its satellites would take after they deployed, and the company will continue to share onboard GPS data through the Air Force. That info can be accessed through a website called Space Track (for anyone who has an approved account with the website). The move has been lauded by satellite trackers, but even with all of this information, it’s still somewhat difficult to know what SpaceX’s satellites are going to do and where they’re going to be in the future. Each Starlink spacecraft is equipped with a novel autonomous avoidance system that triggers the vehicle to move out of the way of a potential collision, all on its own. It requires less input from people on the ground, but it also makes it difficult to predict what the satellites are going to do in the future. Astronomers also have concerns about how bright the satellites were once they were launched. The brightness even took SpaceX officials by surprise, according to

company representatives. The Starlink satellites can catch the Sun’s light well beyond twilight hours, and because they are meant to orbit fairly close to Earth — about 550 kilometers high — that makes them even more visible than satellites located farther out. Then there are the satellites themselves. The combination of their orientation in space and their design makes them abnormally bright. Satellites — especially super bright ones — are a nuisance to astronomers who are trying to observe stars, space rocks, and other objects throughout the Universe. Astronomers say they could potentially handle the first proposed batch of 1,500 satellites. The worry is that once the megaconstellation grows, astronomers may find it much harder to do their jobs. In an attempt at a solution, SpaceX coated one of the 60 satellites on the most recent launch to make it appear dimmer in the sky. Over the upcoming weeks and months, amateur trackers and astronomers will observe this dark horse satellite and calculate how bright it is compared to the rest of the herd. For now, SpaceX plans to continue launching its ultra-bright satellites to the same orbits as it figures out whether the coating will do the trick.

TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

16 points clear. 22 wins from 21 games. A game in hand. On course for over 100 points this season. 15 more points on the board than the Arsenal invincibles team had at this stage in the season. 39 matches unbeaten in the Premier League. And yet they still only beat Man United 2-0, so can we call them a great team? Ole Gunnar is right, to be called great you need to stick four or five past this lot. OK, OGS didn’t actually say that but he certainly wasn’t having any chat about Liverpool being great ahead of the clash at Anfield. That’s two matches in a row where Liverpool have won and not really had to get out of first gear. Normally, that wouldn’t matter but they were playing

Spurs and then their greatest rivals who barely got a glove on them. Had VAR been more favourable, it would have been four. Had the finishing been more clinical, it would have been six. Sadly for Solskjaer, the best/only thing he has really achieved at United is he’s made Fred look good enough to go and play for a top-four side. He’d have been even better against the Champions-elect had he not been carrying Matic and Perreira on his back. Virgil van Dijk managed to lose the most expensive defender in the world to head home the first and then Mo Salah ran on to an Alisson pass to double it injury-time - Alisson is, apparently, one of the quickest players at Anfield and certainly showed it in his sprint to celebrate with the Egyptian. Having more league assists than Jesse Lingard this season obviously means a lot to the keeper. I guess the positives United can take are that they are only 30 points off King Kloppo’s side and they put a fullstrength team out against the Red Devils - shows United are going places, right? In even better news for United, Marcus Rashford is out for two-tothree months after it turns out he has been playing with a stress fracture in his back - that’s the standard awesome news for England fans ahead of a major tournament. Not many Manchester City managers win on their birthday, and Peppy G became the fifth to see his special day ruined. Bonus points to anyone who knew that before Pep, Brian Horton, Mark Hughes, Joe Royle and Roberto Mancini all failed to pick up three points before blowing out the candles on their cake - and, to be fair to someone like Brian Horton, finally he is on a list alongside Guardiola. Crystal Palace almost have as good a record at the Etihad recently as their

hosts, and a late Fernandinho oggie saw them nick a point having led and having seen Sergio Aguero spin the game on its head. Cenk Tosun took about 20 minutes to do what Christian Benteke has been trying to do for what feels like the last three seasons and scored for Roy Hodgson. And if Tosun can cause City’s defence so many issues, you can’t really think they are going to win the Champions League to make up for such a poor defence of their Premier League title, can you? Each week that goes by feels like it is one closer to Pep packing his bags and heading off into the sunset (albeit most likely with the League Cup and FA Cup under his arm) and the league will be poorer without his innate sense of cutting edge fashion. Mind you, given that Leicester have become a very average side since Wilfried Ndidi hurt his knee there is every chance City could still finish in second, a predicted 25 points behind Liverpool. Jamie Vardy, so often a hero, played the role of villain as he missed a penalty in their 2-1 defeat to Burnley. I think I might have said some weeks ago the biggest risk to Leicester this season is Brendan Rodgers tinkering with what has worked. Well, that and their main man getting injured. I’m still claiming I am right. I’m here to keep banging on the ‘give Steve Bruce some damn credit’ door until it opens. Were Chelsea a bit toothless in attack, or has Bruce got Newcastle defending even better than his predecessor and with less moaning? Bruce saw yet another player go off injured in the first half in Jetro Willems, yet they regrouped, kept Chelsea at arm’s length and made Kepa look like a very, very overpriced signing once more. Chelsea had 69% of the ball and did nothing with it - and whilst it’s great to see that Reece James is a cracking prospect, Frank Lampard should be worried if his best player is a teenage right-back. I dare anyone to be able to spot the

difference between the respective Arsenal iterations of Unai Emery, Freddie Ljungberg and Mikel Arteta at this stage. Sure, Arteta is managing the media pretty well, coming across as a very stern looking Action Man in his press conferences. But when it comes to matters on the pitch, it’s the same old Arsenal. One positive for the Gunners is the teenage Brazilian Gabriel Martinelli who scored, again. But the fact that Sheffield United were able to leave the Emirates believing they should have won and, therefore, done the double over the Arsenal tells you a lot. Mike Dean managed to crown his 500th Premier League appearance with a bit of VAR controversy, deciding that Nicolas Pepe had fallen over unaided which it looked like he had, which is why VAR said no penalty. Try telling that to the Arsenal fans, though. It tells you something about their North London rivals’ season when they come away from Vicarage Road relieved they got a draw. Paulo Gazzaniga, soon to return to the bench when his betterpaid colleague returns, saved a Troy Deeney penalty that should have given Nigel Pearson yet another win. Jose Mourinho is right to point to the fact that Lucas Moura should have been given an early penalty and that Etienne Capoue was a lucky, lucky boy to still be on the field given three or four challenges that were worth yellow cards. But still, Jose. You’d expect to beat Watford if you want to be in that Champions League thing next season, wouldn’t you? There was a lot of press talk about how Southampton suddenly found themselves nearer the European spots than the relegation zone and how Danny Ings must be called up to the England squad (even though there isn’t an England game for a couple of months). When they sped into a 2-0 lead over Wolves, it was hard not to get a little bit excited as Ralph’s Revolution looked set to continue. The problem

with all that is this - Wolves are one of the toughest sides in Europe to shake off, having recovered more points from losing positions than anyone else this season. Oh, and Adama Traore suddenly fancied it. When Raul Jiminez swept home the third and, ultimately, winning goal you could only feel that the Southampton fans are getting their money’s worth of emotions this season. Sometimes, a new manager arrives and suddenly a player looks like a proper player again - albeit briefly in Dele Alli’s case - and one of the main examples of this occurrence is Dominic Calvert-Lewin at Everton. Since Don Carlo arrived on Merseyside, CalvertLewin has been better than Tammy Abraham and Tammy is going to be the new Harry Kane at the Euros, right? A whole 900 people protested at the ownership of West Ham United before the game at the Athletics Stadium, the Hammers’ fans once again showing that they can make a difference in this area by all pulling together to make a point. And it was a point they left with, having led for a few minutes. Aston Villa fans are full of false hope after Jack Grealish nicked an equaliser against Brighton. The point kept them above the bottom two, Norwich and Bournemouth. It has often be said that Bournemouth could do with a better goalkeeper, and given the top-notch save Steve Cook pulled off at Carrow Road I think they might have found the answer hiding in plain sight. Cook tipped a shot over the bar acrobatically, only to receive a red card and watch Teemu Pukki slot home a penalty that gives Norwich fans their own hope of the false type that they might beat the drop. The truth is, the current bottom three will be playing Championship football next season and we might finally get a season where Eddie Howe isn’t being linked to the likes of West Ham and Everton.

SMGS at Alenda Colin Arkley Trophy Forty members, joined by one guest, gathered at Alenda, for the 2 nd time in 2 months, to play for the Colin Arkley Trophy, a tournament named in honour of a much liked and respected former Captain and President who remains in the thoughts of those who knew him back when he was a very important cog in the SMGS wheel. That wheel, thanks very much to recent Presidents, Captains and committee members, continues to increase in size, with some 190 members now listed. The course was not in the excellent condition found during the society’s last visit back in November when its quality remained from a previously held European Tour Qualifying tournament, although the greens remained slick and smooth. The time of year may have something to do with that, with some die back of the main grasses sown. However, it was most probably the many difficult pin positions that were the main factor behind the day’s generally poor scoring. Whilst all Gold Category winners scored more than thirty points, only one in Silver and two in Bronze managed to do so.

The Colin Arkely Trophy winner came from the latter, with Mike Jordan winning by a margin of 4 points from his nearest rival. Quite surprising given his disastrous round in the President’s trophy back in November. Barry Roehrig was another to see his fortunes change, going from the Abacus two months previously to 5 th in Gold. However, the ‘Horses for Courses’ motto did ring true for some, with Ivan Hanak once again winning the Silver Category and Paul Kelsall continuing his liking for the Par 3 third. Prize giving was held at the famed ‘Garage’ near Catral, meaning a number of partners could join, a lot less distance to get home for several following the usual post-round merriment, and a quick sprint down the motorway for others living further south. And somewhat cheaper beverages!! The day’s winning results, by category and in reverse order, were the following: Colin Arkley Trophy: Mike Jordan Bronze Category: 5th Mick Roscoe (27), 4th Neil Oliver (29), 3rd John Rose (30),

2nd Norman Padmore (31) and 1st Mike Jordan with the day’s best score of 37 points. Silver Category: 5th Chris Wren (27), 4th Mike Kaylor (28), 3rd Rob Fyffe (30), 2nd Kyrre Skarsmoen (31 on CB) and 1st Ivan Hanak, who won this category back in November during SMGS’s last visit, also with 31 points Gold Category: 5th Barry Roehrig (31), 4th Tony Smale (32 on CB), 3rd Mark Preston (32 on CB), 2nd Darren Strugnall (33 on CB) and 1st Dave Alderdice, also with 33 points Nearest the pins (Sponsored by Property Shop): Hole 3 Paul Kelsall (again), Hole 5 Scotty Philips, Hole 13 Barry Roehrig, Hole 16 Mick Seymour Abacus: Lee Eastman Best (and only) Guest: Rock Loveday (32) Our thanks go to all Alenda staff for an enjoyable day. Next week we will be at Vistabella. Keep up to date with all SMGS matters by logging on to our website www.smgs.org or simply give Captain Phil de Lacy a call on 966774197.

ELCHE CF midday draw at the Martinez Valero A lucky scheduling decision of a midday kick off for the Elche on Sunday meant that the game finished way before the evil storm Gloria took hold. That said the opposition, Alcorcon played in grey shorts and tops to match the colour of the clouds. The first half was a high tempo flurry of energy, accurate passing and chances for both teams. Like the weather, neither team could settle and take true ownership of the ball and game for long periods of time. This wasn’t helped by an over enthusiastic referee who seemed to like giving very soft free kicks. Elche CF hit the bar at 32 minutes and just moments later Alcorcon got the 1st of their 3 yellow cards. In the 38th minute Elche CF were awarded a free kick which was taken by Fidel #16. It found the head of Ramón Folch #4 who launched it accurate at the cross bar. Luckily the rebound was hunted down by Dani Calvo #12 who sent the ball into the bottom of the goal. The fans celebrated. The first half finished 1-0. The game re-started and unfor-

tunately Elche came out of the siesta a little sleepily. Alcorcon took their opportunity and scored within the 2nd minute of the 2nd half. Carlos Pomares Rayo, who completed his youth career and training at Sheffield United, took the sleeping defence by surprise. Even the secure colour co-ordinated orange gloves matching the orange boots of Edgar #13 could not keep the ball out of the net, resulting in a 1-1 scoreline. The rest of the game deteriorated as both sides lacked energy, placing and accuracy. More yellow cards were issued, more free kicks given and in the last minutes of the game the Alcorcon Capitan, Laure #2, was sent off with a red card. The franjiverdes hopped that they could capitalise on the 1 man advantage, but it was not to be and the match finished one all.

ABBEY ANGLING The second round of the Abbey Angling Cup was fished n the river Segura in Murcia on the 14th January. The temperature never got above 10 degrees under the wall and the water temperature was nine degrees, we tried utilising all of D section by pegging every third peg between the first two bridges, but it did not make a lot of difference as there was still a few dry nets. Alan Maggs our new member was drawn on the Crystal Bridge; this is where people feed bread to the ducks. He did well catching ten fish nine Carp and one Barbel to take the top spot with 12.120kgs, I was in second place with5.650kgs and coming in third was Richard King with 1.820kgs 1st Alan Maggs with 12.120kgs 2nd Terry Screen with 5.650kgs 3rd Richard King with 1.820kgs All fishing the feeder using corn and pellet

RODS & REELS We fished the 2nd round of the winter Championship on the El Bosquet complex on the 15th January. We should have been fishing section A but due to a mix up with the tallies we fished B Section pegs 17 to 40. Upon our arrival the temperature was a lowly and chilly 2 degrees and we suspected that the fishing would be very difficult. This indeed turned out to be the case with several low weights and two dry nets. Thirteen anglers took to the bank and the weather did warm up quite quickly to reach a temperature in the low 20s in the sun. Winner on the day was Ian Brown he drew peg 24 to take 3 decent Carp for 6.960kgs he also lost 3 very big fish whilst trying to negotiate the boat and the underground features. Second place was Alan Preist continuing his good run of form with 6.280kgs and following in third was Tony Macmillan with 6.200kgs We also ran a pairs match on the day and this was won by Ian Brown and Tony Macmillan with a total weight of 13.160kgs There are still some vacancies at the Club and if anyone is interested in joining please contact Richard Wood on 611451423 Tight Lines TERRY SCREEN
