Hospital waiting times below average The average waiting time for surgical interventions in Torrevieja and Vinalopรณ hospitals is 39 and 45 days respectively, according to new data. The January figures, published by the Department of Health, show that that average waiting times in the two local hospitals are much lower than average in the Valencian Community where public hospital waiting times are usually 86 days for surgical departments. The Ministry of Health has announced its intention to reduce average waiting

times across the Valencian Community and as such, published the waiting times of each individual hospital with Torrevieja and Vinalopรณ coming out on top. Both hospitals are publicly owned but privately managed by Ribera Salud and officials want to follow these two examples to reduce waiting times across the board. The official data reflects average time, expressed in days, across all patients waiting for operations. This calculation includes all surgical specialties. In the case of Ribera Salud hospitals, Torrevieja and Vinalopรณ have a complete portfolio of services and specialists which avoid

referrals of patients with complex cases to other hospitals further away. Figures for waiting times are supplied by the hospitals to the health department on a monthly basis. At the University Hospital of Torrevieja, the average surgical wait is 39 days. Category by category in terms of specialties, the average wait for general surgery is 5 days, 30 days for maxillofacial surgery, 28 days for traumatology, 89 days for plastic surgery, 12 days for thoracic surgery, 55 days for vascular surgery, 22 days for dermatology, 28 days for gynaecology, 41 days for ophthalmology, 25 days for ENT and 60 days for urology.

A carnival Crescendo performs of colour at Salt Church Thousands of spectators lined the streets of Torrevieja on Sunday evening to watch the competition parade, a favourite event in the annual carnival celebrations. A variety of themed ‘comparsas’ representing schools, dance groups and associations danced through the town in spectacular costumes. The event was broadcast live on television and on to a gigantic screen in the main town square which allowed those who didn’t get a prime spot along calle Ramon Gallud a great view of the parade. A new initiative this year was ‘quiet zones’ which allowed adults and children on the autistic spectrum to enjoy the carnival, but with reduced volume as the parade passed through certain spaces. Each comparsa danced for around two hours through the streets before a final performance in front of a panel of judges. The winning groups will be announced next week at the much anticipated ‘great night parade’ which takes place on Saturday 22nd February.

Crescendo International Choir performed a concert earlier this month at the Salt Church in Los Montesinos that raised 1200 euros for the church. The Salt Church plans to use this money and other funds it has raised for new flooring. Among the music performed by the choir were three popular Spanish songs entitled Amapola, Clavelitos and Viva la Vida. Other music sung were such wellknown tunes as Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen, Fix You by Coldplay, I Have a Dream by Abba, Imagine and Let it Be by the Beatles, among other melodies. Tenor Robin Myers sang his first solo with the choir, performing Country Roads, by John Denver. The choir ended the performance in its traditional way, by singing the Blessing of Aaron to the audience. Crescendo International Choir plans to

give another concert at Salt Church at 18:00 on Saturday, October 3, 2020 with the Chivenor (England) Military Ladies Choir. A donation of 10 euros will be required to see the concert. The Salt Church is located at Pol. Ind. Levante II, Calle Daya Nueva, 12 in Los Montesinos. It is off CV-945, slightly northeast of the popular Spanish La Herradura restaurant. Do you like singing? Crescendo International Choir welcomes new members. We rehearse at Casa Contenta, located in Rojales on Avenida Justo Quesada, from 5:30 to 8 pm on Mondays. We are made up of sopranos, altos, tenors and basses from at least 10 different countries around the world. For more information, go to www.crescendochoir.com.

Residents want funeral home laid to rest Locals in San Miguel de Salinas are calling for works on a planned funeral parlour in Calle Narcisco to be halted. The Chapel of Rest is close to the centre of the town and residents are claiming that the local government has ignored their complaints and say that the community has completely rejected the facility. Protests have been on-going for more than two months and local residents are incensed at the lack of support and response from the authorities calling it ‘incredible and totally unacceptable’. Despite the fact that the provincial director of Public Health has said that there are doubts over the legality of the opening license work appears to be ongoing. Councillor Maria José Costa Medrano (Cs) accused the Mayor of “being afraid” of acting on this issue even though, just a few weeks ago, he admitted that the City Council cannot grant an opening license.

A spokesman for the Association San Miguel Arcángel, which organised a recent protest against the funeral Home by residents at the doors of the Town Hall, said it was “surreal” that the demonstration was actually attended by PSOE councillors and by the IU councillor, but “we do not understand how they have been here to protest while they have failed to answer the claims and the questions asked of them.” Meanwhile the Mayor, Juan de Dios Fresneda refuted the accusation of a lack of attention and added that the local government “is working to resolve a problem which requires a much more complicated solution” than when the previous PP- Cs government “first opened the file” and insisted that it is a matter inherited from the previous San Miguel government team. “It is very easy now from a position as the opposition to see the solutions,” he said.

BITE SIZE Beware Processionary NEWS: Caterpillars Residents of urbanisation Torreta III in Torrevieja have appealed to the Supreme Court over the lack of investment by the town hall in the area over the last 30 years. Residents recently lost an appeal in which they claimed a €9 million investment was due by the town hall to improve roads and infrastructure in the area. The appeal was denied by the Superior Court of Justice so legal representatives of the residents group have filed a new appeal to the Supreme Court. Residents had initially won the ruling, but this was appealed by the town hall which claimed that the area is not ‘municipal’ as it was never handed over by the builder. Residents argue that they should have the same rights to decent infrastructure as other areas of Torrevieja and many argue that the town hall cannot argue that the area is not ‘municipal’ after it used the area to build a primary school – the construction of which ravaged many internal roads which have yet to be repaired. They also argue that the builder did contribute, in 1994, a large green area in Punta La Víbora in order to comply with the urban compensation agreement. The town hall used the land to build the first phase of the ‘slug’ spa which now lies in ruins after administrative deadlock prevented its Continued on page 5

Dog owners and walkers are being warned of a larger than usual plague of processionary pine caterpillars. These tiny but toxic pests pose a major risk to young children and the elderly as well as pets. The first signs of spring always herald these caterpillars and this year, given the warmer weather we’ve been experiencing they are already out in force and have been spotted locally on Orihuela Costa. The caterpillars lay their eggs in candyfloss-like nests in pine trees where they incubate over the cold winter months. As the temperature starts to rise the caterpillars hatch and drop to the ground to search for food. They can easily be spotted moving head to tail in a procession to form the conspicuous snake-like lines, from which they get their name. The caterpillars, measure around four centimetres in length, are particularly dangerous to young children who may be curious enough to touch them, and to dogs, who may attempt to eat them.

Each caterpillar is covered with tiny barbed hairs containing a protein called thaumetopoein. This can cause severe skin irritation, eye damage and breathing difficulty if inhaled. It can also cause a potentially allergic reaction. The caterpillars pose the most danger to dogs which can inhale the hairs as they sniff the procession or they can pick up the hairs on their paws, which they then lick because of the irritation and the poison spreads to the mouth. If this happens dogs can suffer breathing difficulties, vomiting or start foaming at the mouth and should be taken urgently to the nearest veterinary clinic for an immediate cortisone and antibiotic injection. In severe case if the hairs reach the throat they can cause suffocation and result in death. The risk is high anywhere where pine trees grow, including parks, private gardens, roadsides and many of the local wastelands and trails used by pet owners have pine trees scattered across them.

Fog forces ten diversions from Alicante The thick fog which blanketed several parts of the province of Alicante on Sunday resulted in several changes to the flight schedule. The flights particularly affected were those that were to depart from the Alicante-Elche airport before 12.30pm. The airport authority Aena put notices on its social networks that from Alicante,

a total of ten flights would be diverted due to the adverse weather conditions, notably low visibility. However, although Alicante suffered to most diversions it wasn’t the only airport to be affected and the fog also caused disruptions at Malaga and Valencia airports, with nine and five diversions, respectively.

Mayor demands clarification on second coastal health centre The Mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, and the Councillor for Health, José Galiano, have held a meeting with the representatives of current healthcare provider Ribera Salud, to discuss the proposal of the company regarding the building of a new health centre on the coast of Orihuela. The company recently pledged to build a second centre for the local community but the project is in jeopardy thanks to changes planned by the Regional Health Department. The two local government representatives met with Alberto de Rosa, CEO of Ribera Salud Grupo, Mª Eva Baró, managing director of the department, and Pedro Munera, economic director, who provided a supporting report on the need for the construction of the new Health centre "that the residents of the coast have been

demanding for so long". The mayor of Orihuela has demanded that the Ministry of Health “clarify if it is going to be able to build the health centre we need or if it will be commissioned to Ribera Salud (whose project is valued between 6 and 7 million of euros). The Mayor said: “We want to know the Ministry’s position in this regard, since it is an unquestionable necessity.” He also recalled that this is a request that “we have systematically made to the Ministry, as well as calling for the improvement of other health services for the coast such as the need to extend the coverage of a SAMU ambulance from just 12 hours a day to 24 hours a day, in order that we can guarantee those living and visiting Orihuela Costa and speedy response in case of a medical emergency.”

National Police save baby Officers from the National Police worked on resuscitating a baby in Valencia for 20 minutes, saving the child’s life. Officers were responding to a call on Sunday evening at around 7.30pm when emergency services were summoned to an address in the Russafa neighbourhood with reports of a two month old baby which had lost consciousness and had stopped breathing. Officers arrived on the scene and were greeted by the family, who were very distressed at this point, and the mother who was holding the unconscious child. Immediately, one of the officers took the baby in his arms and began to perform cardiac massage. The child regained consciousness but soon after, stopped breathing once more. The officers continued to work in turns on the child for around twenty minutes until he began to breathe and eventually, cried out. Medics arrived to the scene and rushed the child to hospital, accompanied by a police escort.

Access in Guardamar given a lift An elevator will allow ease of access to the parking area of the Santa Ana Industrial Estate with the urban centre of Guardamar del Segura. The elevator will be built to a height of 11 metres, linking the municipal car park in the industrial estate and Calle Molivent. It should be operational at the end of March. This week the installation of the adapted metal structure of the lift shaft has been carried out. This shaft will house the

elevator with capacity for 6 people. The Councillor for Urban Planning and Works, José María Hernández (PSOE) also explained that, within this project, a staircase will be located next to the elevator and a top platform will also be added that will be available for use. It will have the same function as the elevator, linking the parking lot which has capacity for 200 vehicles with the urban centre. Thanks to this new urban infrastructure,

parking will be more accessible to all. The Councillor said: “Although it is used now, it was not used to its full potential due to the difficulty for people to climb the slope on foot." The parking lot, with this elevator, leaves the Town Hall less than 5 minutes away. The project has been funded by the municipality within the framework of improvement works and is budgeted at 200,000 euros.

Same sex marriage: Females outnumber males for first time Marriages between women have surpassed those of men for the first time. Same sex marriage was legalised in Spain in 2005 and for the first time, unions between women have topped the charts in the Alicante province and 32 other provinces nationwide. The latest figures from the INE, National Statistics Institute, show that in 2018, 123 female civil partnerships were formalised in the Alicante province while 116 male couples tied the knot. Experts say that while the difference is small, it is significant because of what it implies in terms of society coming to terms with gay women’s right to marry – as historically, lesbian couples have suffered double discrimination. At a national level, the figures tell a bigger story with 2512 female couples and 2358 male couples marrying in 2018. Marriages between women have seen a steady upward trend since the approval of equal marriage rights with 2018’s figures for the Alicante province showing

a record number. Figures for male marriage have been up and down. The year after the law was changed, 3000 male couples got married (168 of these couples married in the Alicante province) but the figure stabilised to around 2000 per year after that, and then fell to around 1600 couples per year nationally. The figures show that same sex marriage accounted for 3.67% of all marriages in the Alicante province in 2018. The increase in marriages between women is seen as an important advance by LGBT activists. President of the Alicante organisation Diversitat, Toño Abad, said that in his opinion these figures “show that there is greater visibility of women within the LGBT population” and that they have “equal access to rights.” Abad said that the figures are “good news, considering that bisexual and lesbian women suffer double discrimination” and have tended to be historically “invisible.”

completion. Residents now await the outcome of the appeal, which was filed in January. Meanwhile, the Mayor of Torrevieja Eduardo Dolón met last week with the General Director of Urban Planning, Víctor Costa Mazón. During the meeting, the mayor said that he is keen to finalise a project to carry out works on this important area of the town.

New speed camera for Torrevieja Torrevieja town hall is attempting to address complaints by pedestrians and residents in the town centre about the excessive speed of vehicles on central streets. As a result, local police officers will man a radar control point in the town centre with the aim of fining speeding motorists and encouraging all road users to keep their speed under control. The Councillor for Security, Federico Alarcón (PP) revealed that speeding is a major complaint by people living and working in the town centre, not only because of the danger but also the noise pollution. He also indicated that it is within the remit of the local police to use their authority to fine speeding motorists within the urban area. As such, the town hall has started the procedure to acquire a mobile speed trap which will be used by local police patrols in the area.

ALPE and APANEE Camino de Santiago Students from ALPE and APANEE are set to participate in the famous Camino de Santiago this summer. With the help of the local community, youngsters from both centres will take part in the walk from June 24th to July 3rd. The initiative is being coordinated by the Cofradía de Peregrinos de Santiago Apóstol and supported by Sports Department of the Town Hall and Torrevieja Hospital. The announcement was made by Torrevieja’s councillor for sport Diana Box Alonso, alongside the president of ALPE Fina Sala and the president of APANEE, Maria Sanchez. Children and teenagers from ALPE and APANEE, many of whom have special educational and physical needs, will walk the ‘French way’ of the camino pilgrimage along with friends, family and volunteers. It is anticipated that the group will number around 150 people in total and registrations to participate are open until the end of February. The intention of the organizers is that the children of ALPE and APANEE will not have to pay at all, while their tutors or relatives and the volunteers who accompany them have to pay only 50% of the cost of the trip. For this to happen, several fundraising campaigns will be held to raise money. In addition, an account (2038 3224 2560 0040 7597) has been opened so that anyone who wishes to collaborate can do so by sponsoring a kilometre for €10.

Maria and the Pink Ladies and Panthers marked World Cancer Day at Zenia Boulevard with not just one, but two events last week and thanks to the support of the local community managed to raise €1,269. The events were held on World Cancer Day 4th February and a weekend commemoration on Saturday 8th February On both days the Pink Ladies and Panthers were in the main square at Zenia Boulevard handing out cactus plants, provided by Zenia Boulevard management team, in return for a small donation. A minutes silence was held in memory of all those who have been lost to cancer and a memory board was available for those who wanted to leave loved ones a message. There was live entertainment provided by some of the best entertainers on the Costa

Blanca. The money raised will be used to fund a local early detection programme to subsidise cancer check-ups for men and women across the Alicante province. The checks can be booked through Maria and the Pink Ladies and at the charity’s office on the ground floor of Playa Flamenca Commercial Centre. In return for a token donation, screening for several types of cancer is available including: breast, ovarian, cervical, skin, bowel and prostate.

Valentine’s Day in the heart of Punta Prima La Piazza II in Punta Prima was the venue for almost 70 members and guests of the Orihuela Costa Branch of the RBL on Friday afternoon, where love and, most importantly, friendship was in the air on a very enjoyable St Valentine’s Day held in the Spanish sun. And the day was not only celebrated by couples, but a smattering of single folks also joined in with the members and a large number of invited guests, to enjoy the camaraderie and the fun. Organisers said: “The meal and the service were both first class and La Piazza is certainly a restaurant to be recommended, both for the value and for the quality of the food that it prepares. Our thanks go to Mary and Malcolm Rusbridge for their efforts in making the arrangements for such a

wonderful day.” The history of St. Valentine continues to be shrouded in mystery. It's often maintained he was a Roman Catholic priest who married people illegally in Rome in the third century. He performed secret marriages but was eventually caught and put in prison, where he became friends with his jailer's daughter who was blind. He supposedly cured her blindness, inspiring the family to become Christian. Valentine was later put to death, but before he died he wrote a letter to the girl he had helped heal, signing it "from your Valentine." So a day that is cloaked in love and romance but one, unfortunately, that didn’t end too well for the man himself, although a day that celebrates love and chocolate can't be all that bad.

Corvera payback The Supreme Court of Spain has ruled that the management company first contracted to build Corvera Airport, must repay 183 million euros of a government bank loan. Aeromur, who were awarded the contract as far back as 2007, must now repay the debt that had accumulated after years of delays in the construction of San Javier airport’s replacement – despite being bankrupt. An initial 21 month timescale was agreed, and then extended by a further 18 months, along with a loan of €200 million from the Spanish government. However, after a further three years, it was decided the contract should be rescinded, as there was still no progress towards completion. AENA took over the project in 2017, and the facility opened in January of 2019. Controversy has overshadowed the entire project since it was first announced in 2003 that a replacement for the much-loved San Javier Airport, on the Mar Menor, was needed. It took four years to find a contractor to build it, that company being the now bankrupt Aeromur. Talk of an AVE high-

speed rail link to Murcia and Cartagena never materialised. The €200m loan was seen by some as a breach of EU law, and was unfair to other airports. Landowners complained that they had not been paid the agreed amounts to give up their homes to make way for the airport. Ongoing improvements and expansions at Alicante-Elche Airport also threatened the viability of such a big site. Guardia Civil were called in to take possession of the airport in 2013 on behalf of the government, to ensure no assets were removed after the Aeromur contract was rescinded. The government-backed bank loan was called in and AENA finally won the contract at the end of 2017. After a year of operation, passenger figures are still low, with flights in and out of Corvera sometimes as low as one or two a day. However, during the recent storms and operational problems experienced at Alicante-Elche Airport, the Costa Calida site has proved a welcome addition to the transport network of southern Spain.

Rafal Volunteers help marijuana clean the beaches crop of Orihuela The crop was found just a short distance from the local police station in Rafal, in the town centre. The 400strong marijuana plants have now been taken away and destroyed by the Civil Guard of Callosa de Segura, which was notified by the Rafal Local Police after they noticed the distinct smell of drugs from the police station. The aroma came from a seemingly empty warehouse. However, a surveillance device showed a man who frequently went to the premises, not caring that the police station was just a short distance from the plantation. The Civil Guard detained the suspect as he was about to enter the warehouse and discovered a large watertight cabin, which appeared normal but had a hermetic door through which there were three rooms equipped for the cultivation and preparation of marijuana. The man presumed responsible for the plantation is a 55-year-old Spaniard who has been arrested for a crime against public health and another for the fraud of electricity after having made an illegal connection to the plantation. After going to court, he was released with charges. The Civil Guard confiscated 400 marijuana plants, six kilos of buds already prepared for sale, and two specialist machines, one of them valued at 17,500€

The Councillor for Street Cleaning and RSU, Dámaso Aparicio, accompanied by the Councillor for Health, José Galiano, gave their support on the first day of the campaign to clear plastics from the local beaches. The aim was to remove plastics and light packaging that has washed up in Playa Flamenca in the recent storms. More than fifty volunteers gathered to take part in this campaign organised by the Department of the Environment with the aim of improving the environment, since the huge swells experienced by storm "Gloria" which dragged a considerable amount of rubbish and debris onto the shore. The rubbish collected has been transferred to a treatment plant for recycling.

The collection and recycling campaign will end today Tuesday 18th February with volunteers meeting at Playa La Glea to return the beach to its former glory. Those who wish to participate voluntarily can go to the beach around 10:30 this morning, where they will be given gloves and bags for the collection of waste. "It is worth noting the significant number of people who have attended the activity, which demonstrates the commitment of our residents to the care of the environment," said the Councillor, who also thanked the volunteers for their time and the great work that has been done on the Orihuela coast.

Coffee and cigarette breaks to be deducted A work-time break for coffee or a cigarette could hit Spanish employees in the pocket. The news comes after the country's high court has ruled in favour of GALP, a Portuguese petrol company with a presence in Spain that began deducting time from employees who spent time away from their place or work – desk, counter etc - and their duties. This includes breaks for coffee or

a cigarette. "What will be next, discounting time for bathroom breaks?" asked economist Javier Diaz Gimenez, a professor at IESE Business School and an advisor to the Ministry of the Interior. He said the controversy had its origins in the Spanish government telling companies about a year ago to begin recording the daily work hours of employees. Gimenez said it was

Red Cross helps 440 families after Vega Baja floods The Red Cross has provided assistance in 19 towns and districts across the Vega Baja affected by the DANA in the five months since the catastrophic flood. In a public ceremony held recently at the headquarters of the non-for-profit organisation in Alicante, the performance of their volunteers, who have helped more than 440 families at this time, was heralded. Under the slogan "We are still working", the lines of the work plan have been advanced for the future, in which material and psychological assistance will continue to be provided to those affected. In those 441 homes that have received help live a thousand people, who have been provided with more than 1,100 household goods, from appliances to furniture, and more than 2,000 lots of school supplies.

The Red Cross has raised more than 550,000 euros in funds that are being used to meet the material and emotional needs of the victims. They also carry out work guidance and professional qualification initiatives, as well as small repairs to damaged homes. During the celebration event, the testimonies of Red Cross volunteers were heard, and the documentary “The Watermark” by Nerea Marcén was projected, with images of the catastrophe and testimonies of affected people. The event was closed by the president of the provincial assembly of the Red Cross, Francisco Galvañ, who said that the work does not end now, “there are still many months ahead, as there are many families who need support because they have lost their homes and livelihoods”.

intended to solve the problem of employees doing overtime but not getting paid for it. "This has ended up playing against the workers themselves," he added. "Because what certain companies have decided is to discount the time of the breaks instead of better organising the day of their employees." An appeal has been filed against the high court's

ruling. Mari Cruz Vicente, secretary of Trade Union Action, claimed the ruling did not comply with the legislation. Firstly, the requirement to record work hours only asks for start and finish times to be noted, not when breaks are taken, she said. Secondly, if companies want to change their employees' work hours, they have to first be negotiated, Vincente added.

Recycling works at Albergue Animal Shelter The volunteer team at Torrevieja animal shelter is doing great work and putting donations of recycled materials to good use in order to improve the facilities. Photos show the cattery after Phase 1 (with the new roof ) but without windows, after Phase 2 with its recycled windows and after Phase 3 with its completed extension nicknamed “The Shack”. Recycled bricks, chicken wire, floor tiles, wood and much more were used as well as donations of money. This has been achieved by the sheer hard

work and dedication of volunteer, Lisa, who gave many hours of work for free to achieve this fabulous extension. It allows the cats to have more space access to the sunshine and fresh air when they want to. Lisa is not quite finished and intends to make further improvements. Phases 4 and 5 now await and volunteers have appealed to the public to keep up with donations of money and recycled materials. The

team told the Costa Blanca People, “We need more of the items mentioned above plus kitchen units, work surface, storage units and anything else that people think will be helpful for both the cats and dogs. The shelter is based round the corner from the Police and Fire Station.” Thank you and well done everyone. Spain Coronavirus free Spain has been declared officially free from Coronavirus after the only two cases in the country – both imported – have been cured and the patients tested negative. The first of these was a German tourist on the Canarian island of La Gomera, who had caught what is now dubbed Covid-19 in Munich, from a Chinese woman. He was diagnosed two weeks ago and at least 25 people known or suspected to have been in contact with him closely monitored and staying in voluntary quarantine in their homes. The holidaymaker has now tested negative after being treated in an isolation unit at a public hospital in the region, and none of the people he had been near has displayed symptoms. Health authorities from the Canary Islands say: “He can now carry out any activities he wants to with complete normality – no restriction measures of any type, in accordance with procedures, are necessary.” His symptoms, and those of the five friends he was on holiday with, were very mild and disappeared quickly, but even though he felt well, he was kept quarantined for the requisite 14 days in his accommodation in Hermigua. The second patient was a British man in Mallorca who was admitted to Son Espases Hospital in Palma after having displayed 'flu-like symptoms for a full day and explaining to medical staff that he had been in contact with a person in France who had developed the condition. He was discharged on Friday after testing negative for the second time on the trot out of a total of four. The Brit, who lives in Mallorca, tested

positive on Saturday, 8th February and again on Tuesday, 11th February, but his condition was mild and swiftly cleared up. His wife and two daughters had been kept quarantined at the Son Espases, but were able to leave on Tuesday evening after two consecutive tests showed up negative, having never displayed any symptoms or given positive viral results. Spain now no longer has anyone infected with the Covid-19, nor anyone at risk – after the 21 Spaniards repatriated from Wuhan left quarantine in Madrid last week – and in the cases of the only two patients diagnosed, neither were ever in a serious or lifethreatening condition. Health authorities recall that seasonal 'flu, rife across the northern hemisphere at this time of year, kills thousands of times as many people as Covid-19, and that most of those diagnosed with 'flu in hospitals and health centres have not

been vaccinated. In Spain, all children under 18 and adults aged 65 and over, anyone with a pre-existing health condition, pregnant women, or anyone who works closely with the public – especially vulnerable groups such as children, the sick or the elderly – is entitled to a free 'flu jab and is strongly urged to take this up. Those who are not eligible for a free vaccination but are concerned can 'buy' one at their local pharmacy for a very affordable price. This can either be administered on site without appointment, taken home and selfadministered, or the person can get an appointment with the nurse at their usual health centre to have it injected. Except in the high-risk groups – who get theirs free of charge anyway – 'flu nearly always clears up of its own accord after a week or so, Spanish health authorities confirm.

Arranging a funeral abroad can be complicated – here’s how to make it simple Find out why it’s worth preplanning your funeral as an expat so you can enjoy your life in the sun Arranging a funeral is a stressful experience, but when you’re navigating a foreign funeral system, it can be even more difficult. When the time comes, will your loved ones know how to arrange a funeral in Spain? The Spanish funeral system can catch many expats unaware. Traditionally, Spanish funerals happen as quickly as 24 to 48 hours after the person passes away. Funerals for expats can take longer, especially if friends and family want to fly out, but this delay could cost hundreds of Euros in extra mortuary expenses. In addition, it’s common for Funeral Directors in Spain to request either part or full payment upfront. Then there’s the language barrier to deal with, along with unfamiliar processes. That’s why it’s so helpful to plan ahead to make things a little easier. Make funeral arrangements simple

Whether you live in Spain the whole year round, or have a summer home here, a prepaid funeral plan lets you make everything simpler for your loved ones when the time comes. Avalon is the fastest growing provider of funeral plans in Europe. They’ve helped more than 70,000 customers across Spain, the Canaries, Portugal, Cyprus and the UK for over 25 years. Plus, they have been

costs and complications. “For peace of mind, especially for expatriates and their families, I would highly recommend Avalon’s services,” says Michael, whose mother and step-father had Avalon expat plans when they passed away. “On both occasions, the service we received was exemplary – they made what was such a stressful time in Spain so much easier.” Avalon plans are specially designed for British expats in Spain. An Avalon plan is valid in the UK and Spain, so you can choose to have a funeral in either country.

National Theatre Show in Almoradí The Councillor for Culture, Nuria Follana Ferrández, has presented the XXVI National Theatre Show of Almoradí, where you locals can enjoy the first performances of national productions on 27th and 28th March and 17th and 18th April. It will begin with the play "Unleashed" with Paz Padilla, Natalie Pinot and Rocío Marín a comedy that is built from independent scenes that all have a common background, the lies and the madness that colours all situations in current life. Religion, fear of loneliness, deceit in relationships, competitiveness in the workplace, family cruelty, heartbreak and even death or madness. Saturday 28th March is "Cyrano de Bergerac" with José Luis Gil, Ana Ruiz and Héctor González among others, who will present the tale of the French poet, in love with the beautiful Roxana. However he is blighted because, despite his ingenuity, he has a big nose that makes him unable to be honest with the woman he loves. In addition, Roxana loves another man named Cristian,

who is very handsome but clumsy in speach. Cyrano helps Cristian fall in love with Roxana through the love letters he writes, creating a pact that will make him a slave to an impossible love. Friday 17th "No one Writes to the Colonel" with Imanol Arias, a work based on the novel by Gabriel García Márquez, about an old colonel and his wife who live in misery, waiting for the

government's letter in the to be notified of the granting of the promised pension for their services during the war. This tragedy is the reflection of injustice in the world. The National Theatre Show of Almoradí will close with "El Lazarillo de Tormes" represented

by El Brujo, an adaptation of Fernando Fernán Gómez Spanish picaresque novel, which deals with the biography of a rogue who serves various masters invariably taking advantage of them all. All performances will start at 8:00pm and the price of tickets will range between €10 and €12, plus there is the possibility of acquiring a discount for the four works at a price of €36.80. However, there are also single tickets with a 50 percent reduced rate for people who meet the requirements such as the elderly and unemployed. This year for the first time the locations of the Cortés Theatre will be divided into two, half of tickets will be sold at the box office and the other half online. With this initiative, the organisers will try to prevent the sale of tickets from overlapping, and to ensure that all citizens have the same opportunity to purchase tickets. The sale at the box office will begin on Saturday, 29th February from 9am to 7pm in addition to 26th, 27th and 28th March from 7pm to 9pm.

GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP Reports over the weekend of tensions rising between the UK and the EU over trade negotiations meant that the pound got off to a shaky start this week. Despite this, sterling did make some gains later in the day, reflecting investors’ optimism that a suitable deal will be reached, despite reports that the EU may clear euro contracts from London and withdraw concessions made to the UK in the MiFID 2 financial regulations. It appears that the market will wait for the meeting held on the 3rd March before reacting. Despite the fact that the UK’s economy stagnated in Q4 of 2019, the 0% growth figure had been expected and it still put the UK economy at 1.1% growth for calendar year 2019, helping sterling make gains. Towards the end of the week, the pound made gains after the surprise resignation of SajidJavid as the Chancellor of the Exchequer in a Cabinet reshuffle that also saw several other leading figures lose their posts. Sterling made gains against the US dollar and the euro after his departure was confirmed and gathered pace later in the afternoon when his replacement, Rishi Sunak, was announced. The budget is due on 11th March, which gives the new Chancellor very little time, but analysts are already expecting a change from what was forecast from the former Chancellor’s budget. While SajidJavid was expected to limit public spending, Rishi Sunak is expected to deliver a budget which includes a looser fiscal programme and more government borrowing, in line with the views of the Prime Minister. A look at

Sunak’s voting record suggest that he supports reductions in corporation tax, cuts to capital gains tax and favours infrastructure investment, all of which could be good news for the pound. The Eurozone's Sentix investor confidence gauge fell from 7.6 to 5.2, lower than the 6.1 forecast, and put pressure on an already struggling euro. The General Election results in Ireland did little to offer any clarity - he first round of results indicated a win for Sinn Féin, with 24.5% of the vote, compared to FiannaFáil’s 22.2% and 20.9% for Fine Gael but whether a coalition government can be formed remains to be seen. Key members of the ECB have been at pains to point out that monetary policy is not a panacea for the challenges across Europe. While the ECB is committed to developing supportive policies, Christine Lagarde’s speech in Brussels to the European Parliament made the view clear when she stated, “monetary policy cannot, and should not, be the only game in town… fiscal and structural polices also have to play their part”. The statement didn’t give any assistance to the euro and as the week drew to a close, disappointing industrial production data for the Eurozone meant that there was little optimism over the upcoming Q4 GDP figures. The expectation is that the Eurozone will show growth of 0.1% in Q4, beating the UK but overall for the year, growth will fall behind the UK and come in at 1.0%, which may mean that the sterling puts additional pressure on the euro.

Local farmers protest Local farmers recently travelled to Valencia to protest against the low prices they get for their produce. Spanish farmers staged a fresh demonstration on Friday in protest at the low prices of their produce, cutting off roads with their tractors in a number of parts of the country in a repeat of industrial action they have been taking since the end of January. In Valencia, hundreds of farmers’ vehicles blocked the eastern Mediterranean city’s centre, along a route that ended at the doors of the central government’s delegation there. There were also tractor protests in the province of Córdoba, where 5,000 vehicles blocked the motorway. Meanwhile, the Spanish government yesterday held meetings with union representatives and bosses from leading supermarket chain Mercadona. The distribution sector is being blamed by farmers for slashing prices and using lossleading strategies, as well as other similar methods that are having a negative effect on producers’ revenues. The Friday protest in Valencia attracted 800 tractors, and was called by the main agrarian organisations. They are calling on the government to take measures to ensure that the prices they receive for their products at least cover their production costs. The farmers

NO JOB TOO SMALL RING FOR QUOTATION were planning to hand over their demands at the government delegation. Protestors said that “the machinery is expensive, fuel is expensive, the plant-protection products are expensive…”. The recent rise in the minimum wage has not, however, affected them, because in Valencia wage rates were already high. But other political decisions do have an effect. “Europe is letting fruit in from Egypt, South Africa and the Southern Cone when the season is just beginning here,” they complain. “They have very low salaries and they also use plantprotection products that are

They have sold us out from all sides.” Meanwhile, Agriculture Minister Luis Planas is continuing meeting with the supermarkets, having already sat down with representatives from distribution chains Carrefour and Lidl. Planas said this week that he would like to see Brussels impose regulations so that any agricultural product that is imported into the European Union comply with the same phytosanitary controls observed within the bloc. “It’s a legitimate demand from the sector that I support, and we are not closing the door on anyone,” he said.

Woman’s body found in bin Best of luck Ben! Guardia Civil in the north of the Costa Blanca are investigating the death of a woman after a body was found in a bin in Moraira. The sanitation company raised the alarm after bin workers made the macabre discovery while checking refuse in a residential area. The woman is believed to be aged between 35 and 45. Her body was brought to the Institute of Legal Medicine in Alicante on Monday morning in order

for an autopsy to be carried out by forensic pathologists. The case is being investigated behind closed doors and the details are not being made available, but sources indicate that the woman was the victim of a violent death. The alarm was raised early on Monday morning when workers were emptying rubbish bins in a quiet residential area of Calle Móstoles in Moraira. Local police

were first on the scene, followed quickly by Guardia Civil and then Judicial Police and the criminal forensics team. The site was subject to a thorough inspection for several hours on Monday morning before the woman’s body was removed for a post mortem examination. Officers also have the grim task of sifting through the remainder of the rubbish bags to check for any evidence related to the death.

The Elche Children’s care home told us this week of a young man called Ben del Grosso who got in touch with an offer of support for the charity. Ben tells it best in his own words: "My name is Benjamin, I am 22 years old and have been running for a few years to try to lose some weight, then I fell in love with running, I am from Iceland but currently reside in the Urb. La Marina, I ran my first official run in September 2019 not knowing what to expect and loved every moment of it, a month ago I ran my first half marathon and did very well, everybody has always been so supportive of me and always asking how it went, so I

have decided to use my running for a good cause. So I have wanted to run for a charity and I felt what you guys are doing is an incredible thing. Thank you" The ECCH would like to thank Ben for his kind words and his fantastic support. Charity president Michelle said, “This message touched my heart when I read it, as I hope it does yours.” If you would like to sponsor Ben, you can email him on bendgrosso@gmail.com. Alternatively, Ben is setting up a Go Fund Me page which he will post on facebook and there will be collection tins in locals bars around Urb La Marina.

Things you should clean every day...or not Most of us probably make to-do lists that are a little more ambitious than the hours and energy we have in the day. And that rings true for our daily cleaning routines, too. To make your daily cleaning routine more realistic, we're breaking down the tasks you actually need to complete each day, versus those you can totally get away with skipping - at least until tomorrow... Do the Dishes It's all too easy to let dirty dishes pile up in the sink, but skipping this daily chore can make your home smell, or worse, attract pests. If you have a dishwasher, committing to this daily task becomes much easier. Instead of waiting for dishes to reach critical mass before loading them into the dishwasher, skip the sink entirely and get in the habit of loading each cup, plate, and utensil as you use it. Wipe Down the Kitchen Counter (And the Stove Top) If you leave sauce splatters and spills on the kitchen counter overnight, not only do they have the potential to attract bugs into your home, but they'll be infinitely harder to wipe away in the morning. To save yourself the extra elbow grease in the morning, take one minute to wipe down the counters and the stovetop at night.

Take Out the Kitchen Trash Whether you made fish for dinner or cleared all of the outdated produce from your fridge, it's a good idea to empty the kitchen bin on a regular basis, ideally daily if you cook every day.

Spanish scientists make skin cancer breakthrough Spanish scientists have discovered a genetic material that prevents skin cancer cells from spreading and metastasising. Although earlystage skin cancer is normally easily curable, this factor has, to a certain extent, reduced the sense of terror this type of tumour creates and is leading the public to be more complacent about taking precautions – but malignant melanoma which spreads is often fatal. Researchers from Valencia University, Valencia's Hospital Clínico and the latter's health investigation centre INCLIVA joined scientists from New York's Langone Medical Center in the study which has been published in the prestigious magazine Cancer Cell. The investigation focuses on circular RNA (Ribonucleic acid) – a macromolecule which, along with DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid), lipids, proteins and carbohydrates, are essential for all known life forms. RNA is normally a linear molecule, but some of these become circular in shape and, instead of producing proteins in the same way as linear RNA, the circular version forms part of complex regulatory systems of which the functions are still not entirely clear. Laboratory staff carried out

research with cultivated cells, animal models (mice), and samples of human melanoma, and found that the loss of circular RNA – known as CDR1as – is what leads to tissue invasion and metastasis in this type of skin cancer. A noticeable relationship between low levels of CDR1as activity and limited patient survival was found. Melanoma is the most aggressive type of skin cancer and its rapid spread to other organs and tissues is what usually causes death. CDR1as activity is able to predict the likely behaviour of cancer cells and the patient's prognosis. This is the first study to show that circular RNA can act as a brake on metastasis. Researchers say it stops a known pro-cancer protein known as IGF2BP3 from developing. Identifying the genetic makeup in individual patients' cancer type is critical in stopping it spreading and, if the condition is at an advanced stage, the availability of tumour markers to

help predict the person's response to treatment can bring a huge advantage when ascertaining the best drugs and combination to use and personalising therapy. This means the number of CDR1as present is valuable data when tailoring treatment to the individual patient. The team believes it may be able to extrapolate its findings to other types of cancer. This research was led by Dr Eva Hernando, who spent some time in New York to work on the project thanks to a grant from the Valencia regional

government. She worked with Dr Carlos Monteagudo, section head of pathology and anatomy at Hospital Clínico and faculty leader at Valencia University. Both belong to the INCLIVA institute. Funds were also provided by the Carlos III Health Institute, in Madrid, the ministry of science and innovation, led by astronautturned-government official Pedro Duque, and the Valencia regional education authority.

Calabria

Calabria is a region in Southern Italy. It's considered the Caribbean of Europe thanks to its pristine beaches, stunning landscape, and rustic charms. Hillside towns, ancient Greek temples and Byzantine churches dot the countryside of Italy's best kept secret. The region's climate is mild in the winter, with hot, dry summers. The region is surrounded on three sides by the Mediterranean Sea: the Ionian Sea is to the east, the Tyhrrenean to the west and the Strait of Messina to the south. As such, the sea is a big part of the region's culture and cuisine. Calabria is subdivided into five provinces: Catanzaro, Cosenza, Crotone, Reggio di Calabria and Vibo Valentia. Calabria has historically been one of the poorest regions in Italy, although it is improving now. The region is quite undeveloped and under-visited by tourists but is, therefore, also unspoiled. When you visit Calabria, spending a couple of days in Praia a Mare (known as Praja) is a great time. The off coast Dino Island is popular for its Grotta Azzurra (Blue Cave), where you can swim surrounded by fish in crystal blue water. EAT AND DRINK If there is a fundamental ingredient to Calabrese cooking, it would be the peperoncino. Calabrese cooking tends

toward the spicy thanks to the generous use of various varieties of hot peppers in regional cuisine. In fact, so popular is the peperoncino, that the village of Diamante honors the hot pepper with its own festival. In the first week of September the locals celebrate the Festival del Peperoncino, dedicated to the unofficial symbol of Calabria -- the cayenne pepper. During the festival, one can taste freshly harvested peppers or try locally-produced products that make use of the spicy condiment -anything from pasta to (yes) gelato. Olio Santo, olive oil infused with hot pepper, is sometimes added to a plate of pasta to give it a little extra zip. Soppressata (Sopresatta) is a popular dried sausage typical of the region. Also, Alici ripieni, stuffed anchovies, is a popular seafood dish. Sardella is produced in some of the towns along the Ionian coast in the province of Cosenza. It is a spicy paste made with olive oil, mashed baby sardines and hot pepper. On the other hand, Calabria is an up-andcoming producer of wines, with a number of regional wines earning the Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) label from the Italian government, such as: Bivongi, Melissa or Savuto.

His best friend is a girl I’ve always had a problem with my boyfriend having a female best friend, with whom he is very close. He wanted us to move in together so we got an apartment. I was delighted, especially as this girl then moved hundreds of kilometres away for work and was starting a new life. I hoped the distance and the fact that he and I were setting up home would mean a natural end to his friendship with this woman. However, they still message each other just as much, and once a month he religiously goes and visits her and stays for the weekend. In this time he won’t contact me. I want him to have his friends; I have mine after all, but mine are girls, but I would not have a best guy friend in any circumstances. Am I wrong to feel jealous and second best? I have asked to be included in this relationship but he says there’s nothing to worry about. I have barely met the girl, and when I did she practically blanked me whilst falling all over him (which he seemed to love). It doesn’t help that she is very attractive. When he and I are alone our relationship is normal, however as soon as he gets a message from this ‘invader’, his demeanour changes and it’s as if I don’t exist. Your natural instincts are telling you that this relationship between your boyfriend and this girl feels wrong, so you shouldn’t ignore it, or be fobbed off. I don’t know any women who would happily put up with a situation like this. The question you need to ask yourself is; do you want to live your whole life with someone who is seeing another woman? Because this is what is happening, but your boyfriend is dressing it up as merely a friendship. If you continue to go along with this arrangement I fear one day your boyfriend will announce he is leaving you for this other girl. By then you may be years down the line, and wished you’d have finished the relationship sooner.

Spain moves toward euthanasia The pink lake has gone green “Let whoever wants to live, live, but let the rest of us die with dignity.” With this quote uttered by Fernando Cuesta, a patient with Lou Gehrig’s disease who had to travel to Switzerland to end his life, Spain’s lower house of parliament recently began considering a bill to regulate euthanasia. Introduced by the Socialist Party (PSOE), this is the first piece of legislation to reach the floor of the Congress of Deputies since the new government was sworn in last month. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, of the PSOE, heads a centre-left coalition that also includes Unidas Podemos. With 201 votes in favor, 140 against – from the conservative Popular Party (PP) and the farright Vox – and two abstentions, Congress agreed to consider the initiative, which will now enter a period of amendments and go to the congressional Health Committee for negotiations. This is the third time that the bill has been taken into consideration by the Spanish parliament, but Health Minister Salvador Illa expressed confidence that it could secure final passage by June. It was the Socialist lawmaker and former Health Minister María Luisa Carcedo who quoted Cuesta as a way of acknowledging “all the individuals and families who did not remain idle, but who fought so that others may benefit from

A video of Angel Hernandez (right) went viral after he assisted the death of his wife, Maria Jose Carrasco (left), who had MS

this right.” The debate was at times highly emotional. José Ignacio Echániz, a PP lawmaker, accused the promoters of this bill of wanting to save money on pensions and medical treatment at the expense of the most vulnerable people. “This is the foundation of the social-engineering project that you are trying to promote,” he said. Lourdes Méndez, of Vox, also accused supporters of the euthanasia bill of “telling people with unbearable suffering that their lives are not dignified. This is your answer to a bankrupt pensions system.” “I find it very cruel to say that this is a matter of reducing costs,” replied Joseba Agirretxea, a deputy for the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV). “This is not a medical debate, it is a social, ethical and political debate. We must decide who gets to decide how we die.” Pablo Echenique, of Unidas

Podemos, called the PP and Vox “people without scruples” and urged lawmakers to “rise to the challenge” this time around, after three failed attempts at introducing euthanasia legislation in Spain. This right will be recognised for those who request it and who have “a serious and incurable disease,” or an “incapacitating one,” that causes the patient “unbearable suffering.” But doctors will retain the right to conscientious objection. Surveys from the state-funded Centre for Sociology Studies (CIS) show that a majority of Spaniards is in favour of regulating euthanasia and assisted suicide. Polls show 58 percent support for the practice, with 10 percent expressing clear opposition. “Support has been clear and consistent for over a decade,” says Rafael Serrano del Rosal, director of the Institute for Advanced Social Studies-CSIC.

Torrevieja’s pink salt lake has turned green. Aerial photos of the famous salt lake show that due to the unusual volume of fresh water that flowed into the lake from the floods last year, green algae has appeared. The microorganisms that give the Salinas their unique pink pigmentation can only survive in hypersaline environments. The pink lake is iconic of Torrevieja and serves as a backdrop for many an instagram post. It was also broadcast worldwide last year during the Vuelta de España cycling race which held a stage in Torrevieja, departing from the salt flats. After the so called DANA, or floods, of 2019 and further heavy rainfall in January, an unusual amount of fresh water has entered the lake. Water has flowed into the lake from the Rambla de Fayona, bringing water from the nearby Sierra Escalona, as well as other ravines flowing in from San Miguel de Salinas and Rojales. The recent green hue of the lake is caused by the growth of microscopic algae – an algae which is often present in the neighbouring lagoon in La Mata, whose waters have less salinity. Experts believe that the pink lake will gradually recover its usual colour at some stage this year, the pink hue is always more intense towards the end of the summer so it is possible that as

the weather continues to warm up, the lake will return to its usual stage. The hypersalinity of the water will eventually kill off the algae and the extra brines piped into the lake from Pinoso will allow for the salinity of the waters to be increased even more rapidly. The Pinoso brine pipeline was laid many years ago in order to allow for situations exactly like this one, when in times of ‘meteorological adversity’ the minimum level of salt production could still be guaranteed.

Observations are continually carried out by experts and by the group of volunteers who carry out vital work around the salt lake. Initial concerns were that nitrates, used in intensive agriculture, had entered the lake and caused an imbalance – the same situation which caused the recent natural catastrophe in the Mar Menor. However, experts say that this is unlikely because the algae will not be able to survive long term in the salty waters of the lake and it should recover soon.

Changes Alternative Therapist As an Alternative Therapist it is my job is to try various treatments, what works for one client may not suit another. One form of therapy I would like to discuss in more detail this week is a common one, CBT. CBT stands for Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, simply meaning a form of counselling. A client, through repetition, can feel strengthened and reinforced and more positive as a person. The Cognitive focuses on thoughts, attention, memory, consciousness, reasoning and mindfulness. The Behavioural side of the therapy responds to the client’s behaviour as opposed to thoughts. This therapy is not ‘quick fix’ and involves 6 stages of change enabling them over a period of time to understand the problem, gaining motivation to change and move forward at their own pace to action and

address, learning to maintain and overcome. Various things can be overcome with therapy from relationship issues, divorce, grief, stress, anxiety, fears, confidence, feelings, lifestyle changes, motivation... the list is really endless.

the results for the client can be lifechanging to move forward and to feel strong enough to do so.

The client, by making various changes, learns to modify and their new behaviour replaces the old, allowing them step by step to overcome whatever they want giving them strength and coping strategies. CBT therapy can be life changing and so valuable to everyone at certain stages of their lives. Just by talking this can be therapy for some people to release their emotions without being judged.

If you feel you would benefit from CBT Therapy, please contact us at CHANGES for a free confidential chat on 608829557.

Everyone is helped as an individual , moving at your own pace. Some clients need five sessions, others need 20, but

CBT Therapy is readily available in the UK but not as common in Spain.

If you would like to take advantage of our SPECIAL OFFER of an INDIAN HEAD MASSAGE giving you a PHYSICAL Clear out AND A CBT or hypnosis session giving you a MENTAL clear out CALL CHANGES ON 608829557

Seventy percent of second homes by the coast Before you know it, summer will be upon us again and the market for second homes and holiday homes in Spain continues to grow. In 2019, there was a notable increase in both local and foreign demand. According to a study by the real estate agents, donpiso, 70 percent of second homes in Spain are located in coastal areas, both on the coasts of the peninsula and in the Balearic and Canary Islands where Tenerife is always a favourite holiday home destination, along with Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and Gran Canaria. The areas with the highest demand for the purchase or

rental of second homes in summer are unsurprisingly those located on the Mediterranean coast, where the average price is around 200,000 euros. The average profile of holiday home buyers is that of couples aged between 35 and 49, with children and a stable income of over 3,500 euros per month. "The market for buying and selling holiday homes experiences its most dynamic months from the beginning of the year and leading up to the summer season, while in the summer season itself more rental contracts are formalised. In recent years, the second

home sector has been experiencing gradual growth due to the general recovery of the economy and the increased flow of credit," said Emiliano Bermudez, deputy general manager of donpiso. By region, Murcia is the cheapest of the Spanish coasts with an average price of around 150,000 euros for a flat, followed by Tarragona (160,000 euros), Alicante (200,000 euros) and the Costa Brava (250,000 euros). The Costa del Sol, however, turns out to be a much more expensive option, with an average price of over 350,000 euros.

Valencia still tops for sales The 6 main destinations in Spain for overseas buyers are Andalucía, Cataluña, Murcia and the Comunidad Valenciana (comprising Castellón, Alicante and Valencia provinces) on the mainland, plus the Canary and Balearic Islands. Only Cataluña and Murcia saw an increase in international purchasers, up 7.8 percent and 9.6 percent respectively. Of the others, Andalucía was down 5.7 percent, the Comunidad Valencia -4.6 percent, the Balearics 13.7 percent fewer and the Canaries 20.1 percent down.

USING A FRIEND TO SELL YOUR HOME? BAD IDEA!

Rebecca Serwotka Rebecca Serwotka - Your favourite local property expert, of Inmobiliaria Real Estate Agents in Ciudad Quesada & published author of “Moving Forward - 25 Essential Rules For Buying & Selling Real Estate Without Going Crazy.” Request your FREE copy today!Featured on Best Buy Spain - Property TV.

During my years of selling properties in Spain, I have come across a number of unfortunate incidences, where home sellers decided it was a good idea to use their friend to sell their home in Spain. They’re in the business of selling houses anyway, so using them would be the most logical thing to do, right? Wrong! This choice is full of risks, both financially and on your relationship. But more importantly, it could jeopardize the success of your property sale. Using a family member or friend can become fraught. Just think, if they’re not an independent Real Estate Agent, they’ll find it difficult to advise you correctly, regarding price. You’ll naturally want as much as you can get, but they daren’t tell you the true market value because they won’t want to hurt your feelings, and instead, they’ll go with the figure you’re suggesting. If they dare to negatively comment on the figure you’d hoped for, you’re going to feel like they’re insulting you. It makes it more difficult to disagree on price, when it’s between family or friends. If they comment on any repairs that need fixing, you may feel that they are being unkind, and you’re going to take great offense with any criticism. If the house didn’t sell quickly enough, the tension between seller and “friend” grows, and that’s when things get awkward. Even though you

can see your friend is trying their best, you just can’t stop that nagging feeling of… “what if they could be doing more?” but you don’t want to insult them. The feeling of frustration will continue on both sides. The home seller wants their property sold, the friend wants to sell their home, but because of their relationship, they couldn’t agree to get the deal done professionally. Even friends want paying! Using a friend you may think, would save you money. But really the friend will be expecting to be paid too! This is the ultimate, cringe worthy dialogue, that no-one wants to have with a friend. Money is the highest reason for destroying friendships the fastest. So if you want to keep your friendly relationship going – use an independent Real Estate Agent! Selling? Enjoy the journey!

The recent 2019 notarial returns show the Brits, as ever, heading the nationality league table. And that’s in spite of an exchange rate about 20 percent weaker against the Euro since the Brexit referendum. In total,

British buyers purchased 6,681 properties in the period, 38 percent more than the French who were in 2nd place with 4,156. The Germans were in 3rd place with 3,739. In market share terms the British made up 13.03 percent of the overseas market, compared with 14.7 percent for the whole of the previous year. However, these top 3 players all registered falls compared to the same period in 2018. There were 12.3 percent fewer buyers from the UK, while France and Germany were down 1.4 percent and 9.8 percent respectively. The biggest falls were recorded by the Swedes, down 30 percent and Danes, 24.6 percent. In fact, there were only two groups from EU countries that increased, Ireland

up 1.5 percent and the Dutch, up 2.4 percent. Although there were fewer buyers from overseas spending per square metre was up in the most numerous nationalities. For example, the Germans spent €2,230 per square metre on average, 8 percent more than the same period in 2018. Meanwhile, the French spent an average €1,694 per square metre, up 5.5 percent. The Norwegians went mad and increased average spend per square metre by 19.9 percent, to €2,220. Only the Irish, Italians and Danes spent less than the same period in 2018. But the real big spenders in 2019 were from the US. They purchased at an average price per square metre of €2,643, more than any other nationality, an increase of 14.3 percent.

Prices continued to rise in 2019 The closing prices of homes that were sold on the Spanish coasts grew by 5.7 percent over the last year (2019), up to 1,727 euros per metre squared, which is 160 euros per square foot, according to a study published by idealista. Properties on the Costa del Sol were those that have risen the most in the last year, with an increase of 9.9 percent. These are followed by the coastal areas of the Balearic Islands, with a price change of 9.3 percent, and those on the coast of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, where prices rose by 6.3 percent. Next up are the Costa del Maresme (Barcelona) with 4.6 percent, the Costa Cálida (Murcia) and the Costa de Valencia with 4.1 percent in both cases. With price rises of

less than 4 percent were the Costa Blanca in Alicante (3.7 percent), the Costa de Las Palmas (3.6 percent), the Rías Baixas (3.2 percent) and the Costa de Almería (3.1 percent). The Cantabrian coasts in the north of Spain, on the other hand, kept showing year-onyear drops in their prices. The greatest decrease in house prices occurred in the Mariña Lucense (-6.5 percent), followed by the Costa da Morte in A Coruña (-1.1 percent), the Costa of Biscay (-0.7 percent) and the Costa Verde in Asturias (-0.6 percent). In all other Spanish coastal areas, property prices increased. The Balearic coast remains the area with the highest prices: 3,144 euros/m2, or 289 euros/sq ft. It is followed by the Costa

Guipuzcoana (2,972 euros/m2 or 276 euros/sq ft), Maresme (2,368 euros/m2 or 220 euros/sq ft) and the Costa Brava (2,250 euros/m2 or 209 euros/sq ft). Also above two thousand euros are the Coast of Biscay (2,204 euros/m2 or 205 euros/sq ft) and the Costa del Sol (2,030 euros/m2 or 189 euros/sq ft). The Mariña Lucense is the coastal area with the lowest prices, with sellers only asking for 949 euros/m2, or 88 euros/sq ft. Close behind it comes the Costa da Morte with 957 euros/m2, or 89 euros/sq ft, then the Costa del Azahar in Castellón (1,044 euros/m2 or 97 euros/sq ft), the Costa de Valencia (1,118 euros/m2 or 104 euros/sq ft) and the Costa Cálida (1,144 euros/m2 or 106 euros/sq ft).

Peach of a trip

Magical Mazaron This new trip offers the change to experience three exciting elements: the unique Bolnuevo beach, the picturesque port and the most exciting for any expat; a visit to the recently opened Food Co store which stocks Tesco products. Mazarrón is set in a wide bay that opens up into the Mediterranean and has a coastline of 35 km. It has two important urban centres: the port and the town which lies, five kilometres from the coast. It is also home to one of Spain’s lesser known natural wonders. On this trip you will travel by luxury coach to L’Azohia and the ‘Enchanted City of Bolnuevo’ . Bolnuevo is a small fishing village in the municipality of Mazarrón, and is famous for its magical, otherworldly sandstone formations – Las Gredas - which are situated right next to the beach. The soft sandstone has been sculpted into mushroom-like and almost vertical shapes by water and wind over thousands of years and are considered monuments of natural interest. Although Bolnuevo has become increasingly

Organised by local Spanish lady Begona Josa del Portillo the range of ‘Discover the Real Spain’ trips and tour aims to expose hidden gems to expats and holiday makers alike. Begona’s latest trips include a returning favourite and a new offering....

popular among holidaymakers and Instagrammers in recent years, it has retained most of its old, traditional Spanish charm, and that’s what’s makes this little place so special. The tour will then move to the scenic Puerto de Mazarron where you will taste the culinary delights of a traditional lunch whilst watching the boats bob on the ocean waves. The dishes will be full of local ingredients and produce and also offer the opportunity to try some of the daily catches from the seafood and market that is housed in the port. Finally the tour will stop at the recently opened Food Co store, which stocks Tesco products in what is the largest British-style supermarket in the province. There are around 7,500 lines on offer, including many from Tesco’s ‘Finest’ range and you’ll get the change to shop till you drop. This trip takes place on Friday 6th March and costs 30€ with local pick-up points from Torrevieja to Los Alcazares. Places are expected to be in high demand so book now to avoid disappointment. See contact details below.

Following the popularity of the recent trip to the beautiful peach blossom fields in Murica, the trip is being offered again as part of the ‘Discover the Real Spain’ series of trips and tours. This tour is the perfect way to discover the wider region and a hidden gem. This next trip will take place on Friday 28th February and offers the opportunity to see the peach orchards in full bloom and experience the incredibly beautiful countryside between the coast and Cieza in the region of Murcia – an area famed for its farming of peaches and olives . This particular journey will take you from your chosen local pick up point along a scenic route offering views across some of the most gorgeous countryside in this part of Spain. This will culminate in the arrival at the Peach orchards where you will enjoy a guided tour of one of the leading Peach farms in Spain. You will experience the ‘House of Peaches’ where they have used the same machines and methods of harvesting for more than 90 years. From there the group will head to the orchards for a stroll through the beautiful blooms and eat a picnic lunch showcasing some of the fabulous foods produced locally; including of course breads accompanied by the delicious artisan jams and preserves made from the farm’s fresh peaches and apricots. There will also be the opportunity to taste peach wine and visitors are able to buy all of the home-made produce at the farm shop before they leave. The trip costs just 26€ per person and again pickups are available from Torrevieja to Los Alcazares.

Call Begona now on 622 188 772 to book your place on either or both of the above trips and to arrange a pick up location.

NosmoKing donation to Debra

The NosmoKing Social Club this week made a €1000 donation to DEBRA. Photo shows Chairman Christine passing the money to Mary Chambers from DEBRA. The club meets each Thursday morning at Che Loco in El Chaparral and has some 141 members. A club spokesperson told the Costa Blanca People, “We were originally formed back in the days when smoking was allowed in restaurants, our purpose was to provide a Club meeting where nobody smoked, and this remains our objective. All non-smokers who are interested in joining us are welcome.”

Art is for Everyone! Errata Local group take on a Berber charity project If you’ve ever wondered whether you have a brilliant artist in you, just desperate to get out – maybe it’s time to give your talent a chance to shine! Suzanne Stokes has been teaching art in the Quesada area for 14 years and currently has two sessions a week at Meson Algorfa in Algorfa high street, and at the beautiful Restaurante La Herradura in Los Montesinos. ‘Painting and drawing are such relaxing pastimes,’ said Suzanne, ‘And over the years I have watched so many people blossom and grow in confidence when they discover that they have a talent they never knew existed. And even people with health challenges are able to take part as both venues are wheelchair friendly.’ Suzanne is also a working artist and much of her work is on display at La Herradura. She has sold paintings all over the world, many from online shops like ETSY – and these days her paintings are often sold locally even before they are framed as people see them on Facebook. ‘I love to paint dancers – and that’s probably what I’m best known for, but I do portraits too – both of animals and people. A recent triple portrait of the Chelsea Pensioners was a gift to them and will soon be delivered to them at the Royal Hospital Chelsea.’

If you would like more information about Suzanne’s classes or artwork, see www.sue-stokes.co.uk or call her on 680 961 025

Due to a misprint in last week’s edition, we’d like to clarify that the date of the Bling Ball is actually February 28th (and not 20th, as printed last week). The good news is that some tickets are still available but are going fast so early reservation is advised. Organiser Andrea has gathered a team of ten people to travel to Morocco to carry out work on a school in a Berber village there (she would like 12 so is still looking for a couple of people and a carpenter would be especially welcome). Already signed up are two engineers, an electrician and a plumber as well as a group of very willing ladies who will do all the labouring and painting.

The group is all paying for their own flights and are raising a minimum of €1000 each to fund the work to be done on arrival. They will be staying with local people, which will be a incredible experience. Tickets for the Bling Ball are just €25 per person and include a cava reception as well as a three course meal with wine and wonderful entertainment. The group is also gathering good quality children’s clothing and school materials as well as monetary donations. To donate, or to reserve a ticket to the Bling Ball, please call Andrea on 711005403.

Tell us where you love to eat If you have a bad experience at a restaurant and you’ll probably tell anyone who will listen how truly awful the place was. If you have a brilliant experience at a restaurant and you’ll probably mean to call the manager and say how nice the waiter was, how tasty the meal was and so on, but you never really get around to it. Now is your chance to give all the excellent restaurants on the Costa Blanca their time in the limelight as the nominations for the Costa Blanca People’s 2020 Culinary Awards are open until Friday, 27th March. If you have been to a brilliant restaurant, café or bar to eat in

the last twelve months, then make it count by nominating your top choice for the Costa Blanca People Culinary Awards. The awards were established to celebrate all that is amazing about dining out here on the Costa Blanca. There is no similar benchmark for restaurants in this region so you know that if you see a restaurant proudly displaying a Costa Blanca People Culinary Awards trophy, they have been nominated by your fellow diners and judged by our mystery patrons who scored the restaurant in secret. Marks are given for quality, service, taste, presentation, cleanliness, value

and so on. The Costa Blanca People Culinary Awards are a mark of excellence which diners can rely upon to guide them to a quality restaurant. Managing Director of the Costa Blanca People, Claire Richards, said “Every year, we delight in the Costa Blanca People Culinary Awards - from the nominations rolling in, right up to the awards night itself which is always a fabulously fun evening. Once again this year, these awards serve as a great platform for bar and restaurants to promote themselves in a friendly and upbeat environment.”

All you need to do to nominate your favourite restaurant is fill in a nomination form (simply follow this link to the Google form: https://forms.gle/ WbXtPZKEUkpacJ2Z8) or send us an email with the detail of which restaurant you would like to nominate and why.

Line of Duty cast reunites The much-loved Line of Duty cast have been teasing us with their behind-thescenes shots of series 6 and most recently reunited once more for filming. There's a new cast member joining the core trio of D.S. Steve Arnott (Martin Compston) and D.I. Kate Fleming (Vicky McClure) and Superintendent Ted Hastings (Adrian Dunbar) in the form of actress Kelly Macdonald, who will appear as DCI Joanne Davidson. So far we know that the BBC police drama will return ‘sometime in 2020’, but

whether our favourite castmembers will make it through the entire series remains to be seen. Creator Jed Mercurio has so far remained tight-lipped on what fans can expect for series 6, but sent everyone into a frenzy when he posted a cryptic clue in December. It was a picture of an Australian biscuit called a Tim Tam made by company Arnott's, many became convinced that because the picture of the biscuit was breaking that it meant

Arnott would 'break' and give up who was really 'H'. There's no proof of this, however, with the mystery 'H' remaining a mystery after the end of series 5. It

revealed there were actually four corrupt officers – three of whom had been uncovered with one left to figure out their identity. There's also rumours that Kate is involved in some dodgy police dealings which would be the biggest twist of the entire show so far, but it's likely that the gang member who has successfully infiltrated the police will be behind the identity reveal. No one is safe in the world of Line of Duty, as Jed has proved in the past

killing off famous faces of the cast and putting main characters on the wrong side of the law. Even star Vicky McClure is worried she won't make it, and told Red magazine recently that everyone lived in fear: "I think we all [the whole cast] are. "We all know we're always teetering on the vulnerable side of life because Line of Duty always delivers a sort of completely shocking killing or complete twist. Or whatever it might be.."

Red meat IS bad for you Eating red or processed meat twice a week raises the risk of heart disease and also of an early death of any cause, a study has suggested. Those who have just two portions a week are three per cent more likely to suffer a premature death, the study of almost 30,000 people found. And the habit increased their risk of getting heart disease by up to seven per cent. Only fish was regarded to be completely safe, according to the research, but fish is lacking in most people's diets. The findings come after a controversial report last year suggested that the link between meat and heart disease was so weak that people cutting it out of their diet for that reason might as well not bother. Red meat includes beef, lamb, pork, veal and venison. Processed meat, such as bacon, sausages, hot dogs, salami, corned beef, pates and ham, is anything which has been modified by smoking, curing, or adding salt or preservatives. The study, published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine, examined selfreported diets of 29,682 men and women with an average age of 53. The researchers defined a 'serving' of red meat or poultry as a four-ounce portion - roughly 115 grams. For processed meat, one serving consisted of two slices of bacon, two small links of sausage, or one hot dog. The findings show that eating two servings of red meat or processed meat per week was linked with a three per cent higher risk of all causes of death. Eating processed meat twice a week increased the risk of cardiovascular disease by seven per cent, and

unprocessed red meat by four per cent. Eating poultry twice a week was linked to an increase of cardiovascular disease by four percent. Eating poultry twice a week was linked to an increase of cardiovascular disease by four percent. But the researchers said this finding was less clear-cut - and may be linked to how someone cooks their chicken, such as deep fried. Should you cut back? Meat is a good source of protein, vitamins and minerals in the diet. The Department of Health advises that we eat no more than 70g (cooked weight) of red and processed meat a day, which is the average daily consumption in the UK. This is mainly because there is a link between bowel cancer and red meat, such as beef and lamb, and processed meat, such as sausages and bacon. Processed meat often contains nitrogen-based preservatives that stop it going off while being transported or stored. These preservatives have been linked to both bowel and stomach cancer. When red meat is digested, the pigment haem gets broken down in our gut to form chemicals called N-nitroso compounds. These compounds have been found to damage the DNA of cells that line our digestive tract, which could trigger cancer. Our body may also react to this damage by making cells divide more rapidly to replace those that are lost. This 'extra' cell division may increase the risk of cancer. Cancer Research UK says three chemicals in meat are linked to bowel cancer because they damage cells in the gut. Red and processed

meat has also been linked to type 2 diabetes. This may be due to the preservatives used or the meats' higher levels of saturated fat than chicken and fish. However, researchers in Canada, Spain and Poland cast a shadow over eating advice adopted by health organisations around the world in November 2019. In a landmark paper, the academics analysed past studies of how eating meat affected the health of more than four million people. The research, published in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine, found no evidence that eating beef, pork and lamb could increase the rates of heart disease, cancer, stroke or type 2 diabetes – despite fears. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), heart disease and stroke are the world's biggest killers, causing more than 15million deaths in 2016. The WHO classes red meat as probably cancer-causing and processed meat as carcinogenic, meaning it's definitely linked to the cancer. The scientific consensus is eating a lot is bad for your health - time and time again, studies have shown the dangers. However, scientists caused an uproar last November when a controversial meta-analysis suggested cutting down on sausages, mince, steak and all other forms of red or processed meat is pointless. The review of previous research by a Canadian team concluded that people don't need to reduce the amount of red meat and processed meat they eat because the risk to their health was small.

HAPPINESS

MAKE HAY

Happiness rides a wave that kisses the shore, can tease, titillate, promise much more. It can arrive unexpected, surprise and bless you, can caress, enfold, and fully arrest you.

We’re on this earth for the shortest time – so paint that picture, pen that rhyme. Make that table; mend that chair; wear pretty clothes; braid your hair.

Happiness can appear on a gossamer wing, can perplex and delight you – or, full-throated, sing! It can tickle, take over, fill you with joy, invade every corner, be blatant or coy. If it arrives – don’t send it away coax and caress it – persuade it to stay. It can come in all colours, and manner of shapes, can be earth-bound, be spell-bound – invite it to play. So sad that those people who inhabit our land, who dole out destruction and don’t understand that mankind will wither, unless they harness love, hope, and harmony; court happiness. Joy Lennick

Smile each day. Contain your pain; welcome sunshine after rain. Drink in scenes of nature’s splendor – ban that frown and that ‘bender.’ Stop and open wide your eyes, for there is much that will surprise… And when at last your life is spent (no time then to regret or repent) let them plant a sign: ‘I smelled the roses’ And stick it near your upturned toeses! Joy Lennick

Lemon water, the new ‘in’ drink! With local eateries seeing an increase in people requesting healthy food and drink options from avocado toast and Buddha bowls to matcha teas and infusions, here we look at the real benefits of the latest trend for drinking lemon water.... Lemon juice is often touted as the ultimate health hack. But can sipping on a warm mug of citrus fruits really rejuvenate your skin? Lemon contains vitamin C which is really important for our skin. It helps to promote collagen production and protects from UV damage. Adding a flavouring to water may also help us to drink more, which is also good for the appearance of your skin. It’s not all good news though. The anti-ageing effects of lemon water will quickly wear off when your teeth are black from all the acid though. The amount of vitamin C you actually get from lemon water is not significant. You’re much better off upping your fruit intake to see the real benefits. Wellness gurus maintain lemon juice can have a transformative effect on your midriff. But is this really true? No, say the experts! There is some evidence that a very high intake of grapefruit juice may help weight loss in studies with rodents but there is no evidence at all the lemon water has any impact on weight loss or metabolic rate. There is no

physiological mechanism by which this would happen. Is lemon water good for digestive health? Bad news for lemon-lovers, sipping on citrus is not that great for your gut either. Outside of the body, the acid in lemon can help to breakdown bacteria, but when it reaches the stomach, there will be no additional benefits to digestive health and most people with digestive problems find citrus to be an irritant to their condition due to the high acid content. Does lemon water flush out the toxins? If you buy into this fad, you’ll be wasting a lot of money on lemons. There is no such thing as 'toxins' really. Nothing we eat is 'toxic'. Our environment and behaviours like smoking, drinking alcohol, intense exercise and

restrictive dieting can cause freeradicals to build up in our bodies, which lead to tissue damage. Antioxidants like vitamin C can help to counteract these freeradicals. People believe that lemon water helps to break down fat. This is because of the belief that the acidic nature of the lemon impacts on fat digestion. As mentioned previously, stomach acid and bile are both perfectly designed to break down fat in the most efficient way. Finally some good news... If you’re prone to colds at this time of year or feel one coming on, get stuck into a warm glass of lemon juice, because it is good for battling the sniffles. Vitamin C is a really important vitamin for our immune system and making sure that you’re getting enough vitamin C in your diet can help your immune system.

Scientists find 'switch' in the brain that helps control appetite Scientists have found a “switch” in the brain that helps to control appetite, which could explain why some people find it hard to know when to stop eating, a study has suggested. The researchers believe that sugar levels in the bloodstream are involved in triggering when the switch is turned on during a meal so that people begin to feel full. But when the switch fails, it leads to overeating and obesity, they suggested. The findings, which could provide further scientific evidence to support George Osborne’s new sugar tax, are part of a wider body research into the nature of appetite control and how hormones and brain activity are both involved in determining hunger, craving and over-eating. Scientists discovered the appetite switch while studying the strength of the connections between nerve cells in the brains of laboratory mice, a phenomenon known to be important for learning and memory. In particular they wanted to see what would happen when the gene for an enzyme called OGT was deliberately knocked out in certain regions of the mouse brain. OGT is known to be involved in many aspects of body metabolism, including the use of the hormone insulin and glucose in the bloodstream – which can rise during a meal or after drinking sugary drinks. One of the jobs of the enzyme is to add a chemical derivative of glucose to proteins and this appears to be important certain nerve cells of the

appetite control centres of the brain. When the gene for this enzyme is deleted or knocked out, the mice doubled in weight in just two weeks as a result of a build-up of fat. “These mice don’t understand that they’ve had enough food, so they keep eating,” said Olof Lagerlof, a Johns Hopkins researcher and first author of the research published in the journal Science. The scientists found that when the OGT gene no longer worked in a certain type of nerve cell in the hypothalamus of the brain, the mice did not seem to know when to stop eating and grew excessively fat compared to ordinary mice, said Professor Richard Huganir, director of the department of neuroscience at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland. “Two weeks later we were going to study behaviour and learning but my graduate student, Olof, came back and told me that these mice were getting really fat, which we didn’t expect, so we started to study what was causing that,” Professor Huganir said. “This gene for the OGT enzyme regulates the balance of the satiety effect. When we artificially increase the activity of the gene, for instance, we can stop a normal mouse that is hungry from eating,” he said. “When the type of brain cell we discovered fires and sends off signals, our laboratory mice stop eating soon after. The signals seem to tell the mice they’ve had enough,” he added.

However, when the nerve cells did not function in the “knock out” mice, the mice completely lost their send of appetite control. “They ate the same number of times each day as ordinary mice, but they lingered over their food, eating for longer with the result that they ate twice as much as they would normally,” Professor Huganir explained. Sugar control The appetite switch is controlled by the amount of glucose sugar circulating in the bloodstream, which naturally rises after a meal – or after drinking a sugary drink. “It’s very likely that the same mechanism and cell type in the brain are also found in humans. We think this type of appetite control mechanism probably occurs in humans, but we need to do more work to show that,” Professor Huganir said. “In theory, if we really understand what’s occurring here we might be able to deliberately target this mechanism with drugs that could control appetite, which could help in the fight against the obesity epidemic,” he said. The researchers believe the study could form part of a new approach to controlling obesity where drugs or treatments are targeted at specific pathways in the brain that can control appetite more effectively than through voluntary control and dieting.

Cross these items off your shopping list Nutrition experts rarely agree on much, but one thing they’ve seemed to hold steady on is the idea that the less processed a food is, the better it is for us. Whole foods - things found in their most natural state, like fish, chicken, fruits and veggies maintain all their nutrients intact and don’t have added sugar, sodium, or additives for color or convenience. It’s the difference between a potato and a potato chip. So it may not come as a total shock that recent research revealed that ultra-processed foods are a huge factor in weight gain. According to one report, which ranked foods by how much processing they undergo, ultraprocessed foods are made with ingredients you’d rarely see outside a manufacturing plant things like stabilisers, emulsifiers, and anti-caking agents. Here are 7 foods to swap off of your grocery list if you want to see the scale spring back next time you hop on: 1. Packaged breads Many commercial brands include stuff like calcium propionate and sorbic acid to extend the shelf life. While these chemicals aren’t necessarily

harmful, they aren’t necessary either. Look for bread with a short ingredient list, which signifies it’s less processed. Aim for one with a lot of fiber - 3g or more per slice since research supports eating more fibre can help with weight loss. 2. Margarine and other spreads Though margarine seems healthier since it’s often lower in calories and fat than butter, it’s a processed food and there’s nothing natural about it. These spreads often contain emulsifiers like soy lecithin for texture and to potentially to substantiate a heart-healthy claim. But you’re better off eating smaller amounts of oil or butter. 3. Breakfast cereal The nutrition label may look impressive with all those added vitamins and minerals, but those are fortified or added after the fact. If you’re not eating grains in their whole form, you won’t get all the potential benefits. Plus, most cereals have tons of added sugar. 4. Chicken nuggets and fish sticks Mechanically separated poultry or fish are just as bad as hot dogs. The parts making up a nugget can

come from any human-grade cut of meat, which means they’re likely higher in fat than a chicken breast you bread yourself. They also have a hefty dose of added sodium. 5. Pre-made burgers You can control the fat and sodium content so much better when you buy ground beef and make your own burgers. And don’t be fooled by the health halo - veggie and soy burgers can fall into this category, too. 6. Instant soups All kinds of chemicals go into these flavour packets. And it’s hard to have a good idea of what exactly you are eating when the real ingredients are disguised behind a blanket of “natural flavours”. 7. Flavoured yogurt Yogurt’s supposed to be so healthy, but realistically if your yogurt tastes like a dessert, it is a dessert. Companies add tons of sugar to achieve those flavours, as well as things like modified cornstarch as a thickener. A healthier way to go is to buy plain yogurt and add your own toppings: fresh fruit, granola, honey.

ANGEL MESSAGES THROUGH YOUR DREAMS Did you know that you can ask your Guardian Angel to enter your dreams or give you messages as your asleep? If you'd like to try this, you need to be prepared beforehand and to believe.... This is a perfect exercise to do if you feel that you have been too stressed busy that you feel that your angel has not left you any messages. The truth is that they have, it's just that your mind is so cluttered you haven't noticed them. In dreamstate you are more receptive, relaxed and open because your subconscious mind will accept anything. So why not invite your angel into your dreams?

to remember it! IN THE LIGHT OF THE SILVERY MOON! If you can organise your angel dream at the full moon, it will make your slumber all the more magical. Plan ahead if you can, (at least a few days

BATHING BEAUTY! Take a leisurely bath, preferably including several drops of lavender oil which helps to relax the mind and ease achy joints. After your bath, drink something warm and refreshing such as camomile tea or a hot milky drink. CLEANSING RITUAL Perform a cleansing ritual a couple of hours before going to bed. Make sure that the room in which you sleep is tidy, dust free and the bed is resplendent with fresh bedding. Open the windows which will release any stagnant energy, and allow the fresh air to fill the room. Close the windows when you are ready.

INVITE YOUR ANGEL INTO YOUR DREAM Get yourself comfortable, switch out the light and talk to your angel. You can invoke them by saying the following incantation. "Dearest angel brave and true, I'd be over the moon to hear from you. Please enter my dream tonight & fill me with your loving light".

Here's how! SET YOUR INTENTION Talking to the angels is all about the intent - they are going to find it easier to connect with someone who believes in them and has faith. If you sometimes dream but never remember them, set your intent that you will remember this dream! However, it is a good idea to have pen and paper to hand anyway because very often once we are awake, the stresses of the day ahead start to take hold. Stretch to fight lower back pain Lower back pain can strike at any time and for long-tern sufferers it can be drainng. Sitting at a desk all day, gaedening, lifting, housework and sometimes even exercising doesn’t do sufferers any favours. Luckily, there are stretches you can do while sitting in your chair that will help stretch out muscles and ease the tension in your back. The only catch is that you will have to be proactive. Do these stretches midmorning - around 10:30am before you start to feel the aches kick in, to make a real difference. Do each exercise three times and then repeat the set three times. Twist and dip Place the palms of your hands on the back of your head, and twist your torso to the left. From

here, bend your torso and bring your right elbow down to your right knee. Then repeat on the other side. Scarecrow and swimmer Sit tall with your shoulders down and back. Raise your left arm out to the side, bending your elbow to form a 90 degree angle next to you. Keep your elbow in place, and slowly swing your forearm and palm up and down. Repeat on the other side.

Seated hip opener First, put your left ankle on your right knee. Next, bring your left knee slightly closer to your chest, hold for a count of five and then push it back down. Repeat on the other side.

Experts refute Musk claims that Teslas are ‘an ap preciating asset’ Car valuers and industry experts have dismissed Tesla CEO Elon Musk's claims that his electric cars will become an "appreciating asset". Musk first made the remarks on the Artificial Intelligence podcast last year, saying: "I think the most profound thing is that if you buy a Tesla today, I believe you are buying an appreciating asset – not a depreciating asset." Must opened up the debate again this week, tweeting that vehicles with internal combustion engines will soon see a sharp decrease in value after British Prime Minister Boris Johnson declared sales of new petrol, diesel and hybrid cars could be prohibited in the UK from 2035. Industry experts said that while Tesla cars sometimes do retain more value than their petrol counterparts, they do depreciate.

TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Getting dumped on Valentine’s Day is always going to hurt, isn’t it? Especially when it’s by someone you’ve been chasing for years and spent goodness knows how much on trying to impress them. I think the poem doing the rounds on social media channels come Friday night summed it up far better than I can in this column; Roses are red Violets are blue No Champions League football Until 2022 And they say romantic poetry is dead? If I was worried about this week of football still being somewhat quiet due to the Winter Break Part II then UEFA’s announcement soon took care of that.

Manchester City fined the cost of a reserve team full-back and kicked out of the Champions League for two years. Boom. The rest of Europe seemed to react with a sense of ‘well, what took you so long?’ given the rumours of City massaging the sponsorship accounts to balance the books have been floating around for a couple of seasons. English football fans? Well, they reacted with the class and intelligence that you would expect from the finest followers of United, Liverpool, Arsenal etc. Put aside the obvious fact that City will appeal this decision - 5th place gets a Champions League place in next season’s competition which has got quite a few clubs a bit excited. Spurs, Chelsea and United suddenly feel like it’s a little more likely. Sheffield United, Wolves, Everton have a dream. Crazily, even Arsenal think there is a chance to get back to the top table of European football - lads, it’s 5th place that gets the spot not 8th. However, being realistic about all of this - we all know that there will be a documentary out in 25 years time looking back at the 2019/20 season as the one where Sheffield United nearly qualified for the Champions League, only for City to appeal and get the whole thing kicked out of court. The Blades fail to recover and get relegated

the following season. 20/1 for anyone who is that way inclined. What could all this mean for Peppy G and his lot? He’s not going to stick around, is he? What if the Premier League feel compelled to kick the state-funded football club whilst it’s rolling around on the floor? Anything from a points deduction to being demoted to League Two has been suggested (though, admittedly, the BBC’s source for the latter was the Star - everyone’s go-to for credible thoughts on the running of football). Imagine if City start next season with a ten-point deduction or something, though. Kevin de Bruyne can’t get enough assists to sort that out. An even crazier rumour starting to do the rounds was that the Premier League might end up stripping City of their 2013/14 title if they look at the retrospective situation of the alleged financial doping. Who came second that season? You got it, Liverpool - meaning that those who are struggling to come up with a suitable plan of handling the Scouse fans when they finally win the title might now have to cope with the fact they win two in the same season. And what about Stevie G if they do get given it? Can he sue for defamation given all the chants around slipping? Whole pub debates will have to be rewritten about the best player never to win the title and all that rubbish. BRENDAN

RODGERS EGO WILL GO TO NEW LEVELS. I don’t think any of us are ready for the true implications of City’s alleged cheating. King Kloppo admitted he was ‘shocked’ by the news, but not quite as shocked as he was when adding up the total points his side now lead the Premier League by. 25 points is now the gap following Liverpool’s dogged 1-0 win at Norwich City. 25 points. Everyone other than City (right now) and Leicester are nearer the bottom of the league than they are the top. But you know, the Premier League is the most exciting in the world and all that. Sadio Mane got off the bench to get the winner, prompting Jeff Stelling to engage in some prime-time baiting of Phil Thompson on that Saturday TV show. You’re right, Jeff. 25 points does smack of good fortune, eh? Southampton and Burnley did their best to put on a football match in the face of this week’s storm, Storm Dennis. Granted, it’s hard enough at the best of times to suggest anything Burnley do represents football, but they did take the lead direct from a corner that is the first time the Premier League have had to award the assist to a gust of wind. If Jose Mourinho’s new haircut was done with a view to his team learning how to defend, it failed - miserably.

For a manager that prides himself on the defensive side of the game, it must leave him pulling out what is left as his team find new ways to ship them. Still, Mourinho did assure us he was a new man and seeing his team always having to score two or more to at least not lose does provide some entertainment. As for Villa, you have to applaud their commitment to finding new and different methods of losing matches. If you watched the new Newcastle right-back, Valentino Lazaro, you’d have quickly learned why Antonio Conte was very keen to get both Ashley Young and Victor Moses out of retirement to join his Serie A chasing Inter side. Lazaro seemed to get shorter as he ‘jumped’ to challenge Yo-Pierre for Arsenal’s first at the Emirates, before getting done by the most obvious nutmeg of the season, courtesy of young Sako who went on to set up Pepe. On the subject of dodgy Magpies, I keep hearing how Dubravka is the best goalkeeper on Tyneside since Shaka Hislop, yet every time I watch him he seems to let in a clanger. Maybe it’s me. Or maybe he just isn’t that good. Things couldn’t have gone any better for Arteta - Ozil scored, Lacazette finally ended his drought and they managed to keep a clean sheet with both Mustafi and David Luiz in the team. Maybe they can get 5th? Hey, I only said maybe...

SMGS at Font de Llop Thirty-seven members were joined by several guests for SMGS’s latest visit to Font de Llop. With each visit enabling the discovery of new ways to get there (at least 4 to date if coming from the south) it seems society members have conquered the need to look for ways of getting off of the toll motorway to Valencia (hopefully they can manage the same when we next visit Alenda!!). The course wasn’t in the greatest condition, certainly down on the excellent state it was in during our last visit in October (even though it had then recently been affected by severe September storms), with slow somewhat bumpy greens and a lot of died back grass edging those greens as well as fairways. A second nine increase in the wind, against for 5 of the 9 holes to be played, unlike the calm conditions on the front half, also made life more difficult. With a few dodgy pin positions thrown in, a couple verging on rule breaking, good scoring was difficult. This

was reflected in only 9 members breaking 30 points, 5 of those in Silver Category. Whilst it was great to see octogenarian Norman McBride not only back in the fold but also easily winning Bronze Category, it was Gold Category’s Robin Eastman (42) who shone. The author had the pleasure of playing in the same 4 ball, and Robin’s overall play, and especially putting, was superb on a difficult day and course. Winning from the rest of the field by 6 points is witness to the quality of his golf. Interestingly it seems that each time we visit Font de Llop one player records a stand out score, it being Dave Alderdice last time out with 41 points. The day’s results were the following: Bronze Category: 5th Tommy Boyle (26 on CB), 4th Norman Padmore (26 on CB), 3rd Mick Seymour (27), 2nd Mike Kaylor (28) and 1st, by a very significant margin, Norman McBride with 34 points. Silver Category: 5th Brian Mulligan (32 on CB), 4th Ivan Hanak (32 on CB),

Gold; Tony, Dave A, Robin, Colin and Dave R

Silver; Ivan, Kyrre, Alan, Brian and Phil

Bronze, Norman, Mike, Tommy and Bob

3rd Alan MacDonald (33), 2nd Phil de Lacy (34) and 1st Kyrre Skarsmoen with 36 points. Gold Category: 5th Dave Alderdice (27), 4th Colin Smith (30), 3rd David Rowe (32), 2nd Tony Smale (33) and 1st, with by far the day’s best score, Robin Eastman with 42 points Nearest the pins (sponsored by Property Shop): Hole 3 Pete Cuniff, Hole 8 Tony Smale, Hole 12 Rob Fyfe, Hole 16 Gary Hewitson and Hole 17 Adrian Roberts. Abacus (sponsored by Ron Stenhouse and Gordon Wilson): Due

to non-attendance at prize giving by a list of the actual and possible winners, Lee Eastman finally took the quality red wine on offer. Best Guest Winners: 1st Rock Loveday (32), 2nd Tony Monsellato (31) Our thanks go to all Font de Llop staff for their contribution to the day. Next week we will be at Altorreal for the 3rd round of SMGS’s President’s Trophy. Keep up to date with all SMGS matters by logging on to our website www.smgs.org or simply give Captain Phil de Lacy a call on 966774197.

Costly Mistakes at the Martinez Valero Last Saturday saw Real Zaragoza arrive at the Martinez Valero for a top 6 clash in the Spanish Segunda Division. With another late 21:00 Kick Off, the Frankiverde Fans were in good spirits. At the start of the game Nino was awarded a commemorative plaque to honour his achievement of becoming our All Time Greatest Scorer, something he attained last week with his 2 late goals away at Lugo. Now all the team had to do was beat a very good Real Zaragoza side at home!! The first goal came from a dreadful mistake in the middle of the pitch. Elche gave away the ball and Zaragoza took their opportunity. They ran at a flapping Elche defence. With 4 players surrounding Suarez he shot, only for the ball to hit the inside of the post. It came back across the goal and with Zaragoza's Soro first to pounce, the inevitable happened. Elche found themselves one down on 13 minutes. The Martinez Valero errupted into rousing song, hoping to spur their team on. And it

worked, after just 5 minutes the equalizer came. What a Goal! Juan Cruz on the left handside whiped in a superbcross to the penalty spot where Pere Milla did not even break stride, running at speed he directed a superb header into the bottom corner to make it 1- 1! The optimism turned to

frustaration just 8 minutes later. Elche gifted the ball to Real Zaragoza's No26 Luis Suarez on loan from Watford FC. He calmly latched on to a wayward pass and with three strides slipped the ball under Edgar, the Elche

Goalie for a 2 – 1 lead. The First Half definatly had the best of the action as the score remained the same until the final whistle. Elche's Pere Milla had two superb opportunities. A long range shot that came off the bar and fell at his feet, only for him to shoot directly at the keeper. Then a last minute effort, a looping hanging cross found Milla on the back post, his weak header put the ball just wide. ABBEY ANGLING This week’s match was on the river Segura at Murcia for the 6th round of the Abbey Angling cup fished on the 11th February. There was a better turn out than last week ,with the weather cool but dry, and the river has dropped down a foot and is back to its normal level with a light flow. Again the high number pegs towards the Crystal Bridge fished the best and produced the top weights, with Dave Hutchinson in top spot with 9.680kgs, in second place was Richard King with 7.660kgs and coming in third was Nick Bastock with 6.520kgs 1st Dave Hutchinson with 9.680kgs 2nd Richard King with 7.660kgs Pesky Catfish 3rd Nick Bastock with 6.520kgs All fishing the feeder using corn pellet or bread on peg two, with these two first class anglers on the top pegs, the outcome was inevitable. Lennie took top spot with 27.600kgs, and Neil The winners of the pairs match with a combined weight of 12.600kgs was Dave McBirnie in second place with 21.550kgs, coming in third was Nick Bastock (for the second time this Hutchinson and Mick Hill week) on peg 14 on the Oblong with 16.960kgs. All details are available on our website They were all fishing the pole using bread, www.abbeyangling.es or from me on 965328368 maggots or pellets RODS & REELS We were at the El Bosquet Complex for the 6th round of the Winter Championship on the 12th February Once again the weather was kind to us, with everyone stripping off layers as the sun came out and the temperatures rose. The match was almost won at the draw, with Lennie Bolton pulling peg one and Neil McBirnie

CD MONTESINOS MATCH 17: THE SEQUEL!

Justice is served, but ... TEAM:- 1 Nikolay, 2 Morante, 4 Santos, 5 Manu, 7 Lucas, 9 Manuel Sanchez, 10 Alfredo, 14 Pamies, 19 Luis, 20 Damien, 22 Gonzalo.

staff.

The Valencian FA decided that the remaining minutes would be played, with the same players on the pitch when it was abandoned, at a neutral venue, in this case, at the home ground of Sporting Saladar. So it was that the game commenced on Wednesday 12th February at 8pm.

Given that the original ten a side starting the game was reduced to 9 a side at some point probably tells a story (unconfirmed that SANTOS (4) got his marching orders). The sense of organised chaos was added to in that the referee walked off AGAIN as did the remaining nine Daya players, presumably trying to get the game called off AGAIN. The Policia Local were AGAIN called and Monte scored two goals, both penalties from GONZALO (22) and MANU SANCHEZ (9) sealing probably the most hard fought (literally) victory they will have had for a while. If there were observers from the Valencian FA at the game, they would surely have been aghast at the whole debacle, and all this happened in 30+ minutes! I'll wager, at the end, the ref’ felt he had truly earned his fee for this one!

Now, please bear in mind that, as the game was nominally played “behind closed doors”, the following report is based on several second hand accounts by observers at the ground, but not the game, backed up by confirmations from some CD Montesinos players and coaching

So, matters on the pitch settled, for now, but what of the aftermath? Daya must surely face sanctions for their appalling behaviour over both parts of this game, but that is unlikely, we'll see. Monte came away with the win, leaving them 8pts clear at the head of the pack, but it

SUB’s:- 6 Adrian, 8 German, 10 Alfredo, 21 Dario, 13 Carlos. Football loses yet again as Monte finally triumph over Daya Nueva. Okay, let's recap. The original game was “abandoned” when the referee, fearing for his own safety, halted the game with about 30 odd minutes to play in the second half. At the time Daya were leading 1-0.

remains to be seen how long, key defender, SANTOS will be missing for. The question of playing a fixture like this at a supposed neutral venue, when reports suggest that at least 8 Daya “supporters” (though how anyone remotely interested in football could support this lot is perhaps laughable) were on the pitch at some point during proceedings, remains unanswered. Most Monte supporters accept that some sides will attempt to “outmuscle” their team when they don't have the nous or skill to out-football them, but this whole sorry episode, as I have said before, has NOTHING to do with football and more to do with basic thuggery. It needs to be tackled head on and firmly before real damage is done, both to individuals playing the game and the game itself. Over to you, Valencian FA. Buster's golf society February 2020 Our journey this month took twenty-two of us to Font de Llop golf course. It has been a very long time since we played here but hope to return in the near future, the course was in very good condition for the time of the year and our members all remarked that they enjoyed it, although no one broke par. On to our results the best front nine was won by Stephen Gilbert with nineteen points and best back nine being taken by Kjell Svenson who also scored nineteen points both players received a bottle of Rioja, our nearest the pins were won by, on the third hole Andy Williams the eighth was taken by Malcolm Evans, Rob Ashman claimed the twelfth with Peter List winning the sixteenth nearly having a hole in one and only having a tap in for his two, all nearest the pins should have received a sleeve of golf balls but unfortunately I forgot to take the balls they have all had a credit note ( just kidding ) for these balls however they will receive them at our next venue, in third place with thirty-three points was Ineke Stevenson winning a bottle of Rioja second place being won by Andy Williams who tied for the winners spot but lost on count back Andy received red and white wines, but our winner on the

day also with thirty-four points was Stewart Lee who took home a bottle of brandy, we had three sharing our two’s pot this month, they were Rob Ashman, Peter List, and Will Laureijs, our card winner this time who selected Blackburn was Susan Lee. We also presented Ian Allison with his player of the year ( 2019 season ) today, this is the second time Ian has won the POY which is calculated by using the best six scores from the players yearly total, must say well done Ian. Busters Golf Society is a small friendly group of like-minded people who play on the first Friday of the month, depending on the time of the year we generally have between sixteen and twenty-four players, over the seven years since we first formed the society some of our original members have moved on, either returned to their country of origin or have ventured to pastures new, so we are looking for a few more members to swell our ranks, if you are interested in joining our society ( its free) then please email me Barry Grinsell at bustersgolfsociety@hotmail.com quoting your phone number and current handicap and I will get back to you within a couple of days.
