ANGER AS SPORTS CENTRE REMAINS CLOSED Local political party C.L.A.R.O has expressed its anger at the continuing delay in reopening a fully functioning sports centre in Orihuela Costa, especially the continuing closure of the swimming pool. At a meeting in the Orihuela Costa Town Hall on Wednesday, coordinated by C.L.A.R.O., the Sports Councillor gave explanations as to why, after nearly a year since the centre was closed, it has still not been fully reopened. As a sign of the strength of feeling on the subject, the meeting was full to overflowing. The councillor explained that some facilities have been progressively reopened due to the presence of Town Hall Janitors, but the swimming pool remained closed. It could not be reopened without qualified life guards who could only be recruited in the context of a new overall contract for the management of the centre. He could not say when a new contract could be concluded. After his explanations, there was widespread dissatisfaction over his failure to say clearly when the centre would be reopened and fully

functioning. Heated protests came from Spanish and non-Spanish residents alike. They expressed real concern that elderly people needing the pool for therapy would be deprived of this facility, essential for their health, for well over a year. In any case, the lack of facilities for the disabled to use the pool had to be corrected. It was outrageous that school children had to go to neighbouring municipalities to have swimming lessons. It was made clear that the Town Hall could act when there was a will. Life guards were recruited for duty on the beaches during Easter and summer. As one participant said, the excessive and unnecessary delay was because people in Orihuela Costa were considered second class citizens. On Friday, in Orihuela the issue was Continued on page 3

Continued help for Tasha A special appeal by Stevie Spit and the Costa Blanca People Tasha has a rare genetic condition called Mitochondrial disease. This is a progressive, degenerative condition that has slowly taken over her life. There are no official medical treatments for Mito, except for taking a specific Mito cocktail of various vitamins and supplements to try and boost mitochondrial function. Tasha travelled to America for in 2018 to get help with this. There is NO cure! Tasha is 26 and most of her body is affected by mitochondrial disease. She can’t see, stand, walk, sit up unaided, eat solid foods or even breathe for herself. She has a tracheostomy and ventilator that breathes for her 24/7. Tasha relies on different tubes and medications to keep her alive. Tasha has gone from a fun, social, hard working girl to being mostly bedridden and in and out of hospital on a monthly (and sometimes weekly) basis. Unfortunately things have got a bit worse for Tasha recently. She now has problems with her kidneys causing lots of swelling and she has to take medication for fluid retention. Mitochondrial disease is a progressive genetic condition and this, paired with her other problems, makes life very difficult - though most of these problems stem from the mitochondrial disease itself. Tasha has also been diagnosed with an immune deficiency and which leaves her more at risk of infections. This is currently causing her lots of additional problems so she is waiting to see a specialist about this.

On top of all that, Tasha is in the process of being diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis which is yet more pain every day, on top of the pain she already suffers. In general Tasha has got a lot weaker which means she needs more help with day to day things, even turning over in bed she can’t do by herself now. She is getting more hospital appointments with more specialists to try and keep on top of all the new problems. Tasha is still on Tasha needs your help palliative care. Her nursing was partially funded by a local continue working with Georgia – now, charity, but this has run out. We are it's just a matter of finding the funding to appealing to members of the public to do so which amounts to €600 a month JUST to pay for her care. help Tasha to continue to live at home. A bit of background of what Georgia We need to pay for a nurse for 3 hours a day, Monday to Friday. Tasha’s current does for Tahsa: Georgia helps with all aspects of carer Georgia has offered to work for €10 an hour (a very much reduced rate). This personal care Including washing, keeps Tasha in a routine with somebody dressing, toileting etc. She does physio she knows, and who knows her, and with Tasha which is imperative to stop most importantly Georgia is fully trained muscles wasting away. She is competent and competent in all of Tasha’s care in tracheostomy changes, ventilator needs. The hospital is happy with this management, catheter care, feeding arrangement - it's important we get to tube care, sterile technique for her

central line and also administering Tasha’s medication. Georgia is trained in moving Tasha, lifting her into her wheelchair, driving her specially adapted car so she can get to hospital appointments. Also allowing her a little privacy, dignity and a tiny bit of independence from her parents so she can get out to do the simple things we take for granted, for example a trip to the local shop to buy a birthday card for her dad without him knowing. With Tasha’s dad working full time, that only leaves her stepmum and unfortunately she can’t lift Tasha, get her into her wheelchair or drive her specially adapted car so that leaves Tasha stuck in bed and unable to get to hospital appointments or move properly. Because Tasha can’t be left alone, that also means her stepmum can’t get out and do some work or go to the shops when needed. She only manages to do these things when Georgia is with Tasha in the mornings. Georgia has been a vital part of Tash’s care for a few years now. Many people have kindly offered to help with Tasha’s

care. She deeply appreciates everybody's offer to help. It is a very complicated situation as a new carer would need to be trained in Tasha’s specific care. It's not a suitable situation to have lots of different people, and for obvious reasons Tasha needs stability and routine. Social services are aware of this new nursing situation. Without sufficient care at home they will put Tasha into a care home which would be devastating for Tasha, her family and, I have to say for me personally. Tasha is an inspiration to thousands of sick people across the globe whom she advises and support online by boosting their morale and offering advice. She deserves and needs to be at home with her family. We know we can’t change the world, but we can stop Tasha’s changing for the worse. To do this, I need 60 people from this community to dedicate €10 a month with an ongoing commitment. This will cover Tasha’s nursing care for the foreseeable future. We have the first few contributors but desperately need more people to set up a monthly direct debit for €10.

If you think you can pledge to donate €10 per month to help pay for Tasha’s nursing care and allow her to keep living at home with her family, please get in touch and we will send you the account details. You can contact me (Stevie), Tasha’s Dad Andy or, speak to the Costa Blanca People and we will compile a list of the ‘Super Sixty’. Stevie Spit BEM

Continued from page 1 followed up in a press conference with C.L.A.R.O. President Helene Akerman and Javier Garcia, a councillor from the Cambiemos-Podemos-Claro group. They denounced the continuing delays in having a fully functioning municipal sports centre. Helene Akerman described the indignation expressed at the meeting on Wednesday in Orihuela Costa and the real sense of deprivation felt by residents. Javier Garcia said his group had been denouncing the fraudulent contract well before it was cancelled a year ago. The government had had ample time to plan to fully reopen the centre. He revealed that

according to the Town Hall’s own plan for future contracts, a new contract for the management of the sports centre in Orihuela Costa would not be possible until October at the earliest. The anger and frustration at the Town Hall’s management of the municipal sports centre in Orihuela Costa seems, unfortunately, likely to continue for most of the rest of the year. It comes on top of the anger and dissatisfaction at the state of Orihuela Costa in general, dirty streets, inadequate rubbish removal service, potholes everywhere and parks and gardens which are mainly a disgrace.

Dangerous German fugitive arrested in Alicante

Anger and fear over ‘closure’ of Henry case

A German fugitive, described by police as “dangerous” has been arrested in Alicante. The man is wanted in Germany for a string of drug trafficking offences and faces a 15 year prison sentence. The 27 year old German national was arrested by National Police in Spain after he escaped authorities in Germany where he is wanted for drugs offenses and is considered a "dangerous" criminal. A manhunt began at the end of January when the office of the international police communication system Sirene received an alert about a dangerous person, believed to be in Spain, who was escaped from Germany. The International Fugitive Group was then tasked with investigating the case and tracked the man to the Alicante province. Officers from the Organized Crime Group of the Judicial Police Brigade of Alicante located the man in the vicinity of the city of Alicante and continued their investigation "with caution" given that the fugitive was “a dangerous person and taking many security measures not to be discovered.” Officers finally arrested the man, who now faces a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison. His original arrest took place in his apartment in the German city of Germersheim when he was found in possession of marijuana, amphetamines and ecstasy.

The family of Henry Jiménez, the young man missing from Orihuela Costa since New Year’s Day 2019 are angry and fearful after news emerged that officials are closing the missing persons case. Henry’s brother Andrés told Orihuela based radio station Cadena Ser that he had received an official communication informing him that authorities are closing the case due to lack of evidence. Andrés revealed that the family does not understand this move, and that they believe the investigation into Henry’s disappearance has many gaps, having been mismanaged since the start. The family plans to appeal the decision in court, he revealed. To demonstrate their outrage over the closure of the case, the family and friends of Henry are planning a protest rally outside the court on March 2nd.

Rojales couple arrested for drugs A couple, a 41 year old the man and 47 year old woman, has been arrested in Rojales for using their home as an ‘outlet’ for trafficking drugs. Officers from the Almoradí branch of the Guardia Civil made the arrests this week with charges of crimes against public health (drug trafficking) and possession of illegal weapons. The arrests took at the suspects’ home, in which they resided with their three children. Their home was used to distribute narcotic substances, mostly hashish, marijuana and cocaine. To do this, the couple made a small square window, just 30 centimeters in length, next to the armored door of the main entrance of the house. The window, they used as a drug dispensary, issuing their ‘product’ to clients through the hatch. During the raid, officers seized a gun and ammunition as well as several doses of various types of drugs, packed for sale, and a quantity of cash. The so called ‘drugs ATM’ was generating considerable concern among residents of the town of Rojales, given its considerable number of clients.

First aid training for charity Have you ever thought about what you would do if faced with a first aid emergency situation, either at home or at work? Many of us don’t know the basics of CPR or what to do in a medical emergency while waiting for an ambulance. First aid can mean the difference between life and death in many situations. A new initiative by WMS Assistance International will see a series of first aid courses being run across Orihuela Costa with the double benefit that the proceeds from the cost of the course will go towards buying life saving AED machines. There is no medical experience required to take the course, just a desire to learn the skills that may someday save

a person’s life. Participants successfully completing the course will be awarded with a BLS card which is valid for two years from the American Heart Association. By taking this course, priced at €75, not only will you be gaining skills for life, but also contributing to the local community as from each participant’s course fee, €15 will go towards a special fund being used to buy AED machines. An AED, an automated external defibrillator, can be used to save a person’s life during cardiac arrest. The device itself can analyze the patient’s heart rhythm and if necessary deliver an electrical shock (or defibrillation) to help the heart re establish a normal rhythm.

Our politicians cook

An initiative by Torrevieja’s Department of Commerce continues to see local politicians being put through their paces by cooking meals at the indoor market. The programme ‘Our Politicians Cook’ this week saw councillors Federico Alarcón and Diana Box (Councillors for Emergencies and Sport respectively) at La Plasa indoor market. The initiative began in late 2019 and is open to the public. The two councillors were first tasked with gathering the ingredients at the indoor market. Councillor Alarcón was charged with the main course (olla gitana) and Councillor Box looked after dessert (crepes with chocolate and ice cream). Once both had finished cooking their dishes, members of the public were invited to step forward and taste their creations. The aim of the programme is to promote the wares of the indoor market, as well as promoting Torrevieja cuisine.

First aid for little ones More than 2500 children aged between 3 and 6 will receive basic first aid classes from volunteers of the Protección Civil. The Councilor for Emergencies, Federico Alarcón, together with the Councillor for Education, Ricardo Recuero, and the head of the local Protección Civil, Enrique Pizana, joined at a press conference to announce the initiative. The courses will be taught by qualified volunteers from the Protección Civil (among them, a registered nurse and several health emergency technicians). The children will be taught, through songs and games, a variety of first aid techniques. It is hoped that the children will learn what to do if a friend or an adult, falls or is harmed. The training will be rolled out through all primary schools in the town, as well as the ALPE centre. It is estimated that around 2,500 students will take part in the 50 minute classes. Education Councillor Ricardo Recuero, explained that the aim is that students know "how they have to act in the different situations that can be found in their day to day, and emphasize that there is a number they can call in emergencies."

Torrevieja Hospital opens clinical simulation unit The University Hospitals of Torrevieja and Vinalopó this week inaugurated their clinical simulation units, becoming the first public hospitals in the Alicante province to have these facilities. Clinical simulation is used to reproduce real patient experiences through guided scenarios and can be vital for the learning process. The new unit provides an ideal environment for education. Thanks to this new facility, all hospital training programmes linked to new technologies can be paired with objectives such as increasing patient safety. The unit, which will host training programmes, is aimed at both professionals and students who practice in the hospitals and is programmed with a range of different scenarios including cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Wireless mannequins provide real time data feedback to allow top of the range training for medical professionals.

Valencia has become the first region in Spain to set a minimum distance allowed between gambling venues and schools. The region’s government has introduced a new law that establishes a distance of 850 metres between gambling establishments or bars with slot machines and educational centres or health and sport facilities. A minimum distance between gaming venues themselves has also been set at 500 metres. The government claims this was done in order to prevent excessive gambling, regulation of the market and advertising. It has also been agreed that all betting machines should be removed from sports and hospitality venues. In terms of advertising, the law makes it illegal for advertisements to highlight where there is ongoing betting activity

such as, with high street stores. In future, the aim is to also prohibit any gambling advertisements from appearing on any publicly owned media. Ferran Martinez from Podemos believes this new law will allow the Valencian community to have one of the ‘most advanced and robust’ laws in Spain with regards to gambling and they hope this will be the ‘precursor’ for change nationwide.

Guardia Civil have arrested three men as alleged perpetrators of a robbery in a bar in Torrevieja. The three have been sent to jail without the option of bail while the facts are being investigated. The incident took place on a Tuesday when, at around 3am, the three are believed to have forced their way into a bar in Torrevieja before stealing the cash register as well as the tip jar. After fleeing the bar, the suspects decided to rid themselves of the heavier part of the cash register and, keeping the cash drawer, tipped the register itself into a bin. Such was the noise that this created that a passing Guardia Civil car on patrol in the area decided to investigate what had caused such a bang. The patrol saw the three men

acting suspiciously – one was holding the open tip jar full of notes and coins. When questioned, he claimed it was just a money box he had at home which he was taking to party. Officers noticed that while speaking to the first man, one of the others seemed to be trying to conceal several tools that could be used for breaking and entering. The man’s version of events did not convince the officers so they proceeded to inspect the area. It wasn’t long before they found the cash register thrown in the bin and tracked it to the bar from where it had been stolen. Officers arrested the three men two Spaniards (24, 29) and a Colombian (20), as alleged perpetrators of a crime of robbery and recovered €652.29 in cash.

Rescue Centre at rock bottom Only a few weeks ago Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre (EHCRC) reported that they were ‘experiencing the worst pressure they have ever been under in the 11 years they have been up and running’. Despite the fact that many people responded kindly with offers of help by volunteering and donating they desperately need more - as unfortunately the situation has deteriorated further. Sue Weeding reported previously that they owed €20,000 for forage above the €2,000 or so that they have to pay every couple of weeks for a new delivery of hay. They had started to reduce this amount and had got it down to €17,200 with donations they have been receiving but then they were hit with a bombshell out of the blue. Sue explained: “With no prior warning, the suppliers of the forage has asked us to pay the remaining money we owe now, we totally understand but are completely devastated as we just don’t have this type of money.” The huge forage bill is not a normal occurrence and is due to the devastation caused by last September’s horrific storm which destroyed local crops and Sue and her husband Rod now have to order the supplies from further afield and so the cost is double. Many people rallied around to help and support the Centre back in September but some people use events like the DANA to line their own pockets. A wonderful example of human generosity came from Austria, where a very kind person heard the Centre’s cries

for help and encouraged several farmers to donate hay from across Austria and Germany for the horses. A local Golf Society with the help of others from the local community, generously paid for the transport which totalled €3,150. The money was paid to a German transport company back in October, but EHCRC say it has been ‘fobbed off’ with excuse after excuse as to why they haven’t received this delivery. As the hay delivery was not forthcoming they then asked the company to return the money, so at least they could put that to good use but the company are no longer responding to letters or phone calls. The Golf Society is now taking legal action to try to resolve the situation. A second case of fantastic support came from Norway, where a wonderful man organised for not one but several loads of hay to be transported from there to EHCRC with a much needed tractor and water pump too. All of these things being so generously donated in response to the critical situation EHCRC was in but unfortunately, this donation also hit a stumbling block. Sue explained: “The Spanish Government have said that 21 percent IVA (tax) must be paid on the food donated for the animals and the pump and the tractor as it is not classed as ‘a crisis situation or humanitarian need’. “The Norwegian Charity involved and their lawyers are arguing the case and are saying they should not have to pay tax on the donated goods which are being given as a direct result of the ‘crisis

situation’ but equally they cannot afford to pay the tax.” Bad to worse As mentioned in previous articles in Costa Blanca People, EHHCRC’s Charity Shops have been a vital source of funds which have kept the Centre afloat but the IVA tax now imposed on all the donated items that are sold is adversely affecting the takings and literally taking food and resources from the ‘horse’s

More road deaths despite speed limit reduction Despite the reduction in the speed limit on Alicante roads from 100 to 90km per hour, figures show there have been more fatalities. Deaths on Alicante roads are the highest they have been in a decade, according to the DGT traffic authority, although accidents on secondary roads were down in 2019 compared to the previous year. In January 2019, the government introduced its so called ‘star measure’ to reduce road fatalities – reducing speeds from 100 to 90 kilometres per hour. The measure was imposed on all ‘conventional’ roads – national single lane primary roads. Data reviewed this week shows that, in the Alicante province at least, the speed reduction is not having the desired effect. According to figures provided by the Provincial Traffic Department of Alicante, the number of fatal accidents in 2019 actually increased compared to the previous year.

Worse, 2019 saw the highest fatality figures of the decade on the Alicante province’s primary roads. The data for the Alicante province is in contrast with that at the national level, where in total 800 people died in traffic accidents on conventional roads, 84 less than in 2018, according to sources of the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT). Despite the decline in fatalities at a national level, this type of road remains the most dangerous and where the highest number of fatalities are registered (73% of the total number of deaths). In the Alicante province 26 speed limit signs of ‘100km/hr’ were replaced ‘90km/hr’ along different sections of the N332 and N340. Road safety The lowering of the speed limit from 100 to 90 kilometers per hour on conventional roads has a direct effect on road safety, both because of the fact that driving at a lower speed helps drivers avoid potential collisions, but also because the braking

distance of the vehicle is reduced significantly, from 84 meters when travelling at 100 kilometers per hour to 70 metres if it travelling at 90. In the Alicante province, only three of the 87 sections of the road network that, according to data published by the Ministry of Transportation and the Ministry of Public Works, can be considered technically as black spots - three or more accidents with victims within the space of a year along the same kilometre stretch of road. In these three black spots, the reduction from 100 to 90 has been imposed. The Director General of Traffic, Pere Navarro, travelled to the Swedish city of Stockholm to attend the III World Conference for Road Safety «Achieving the global objectives 2030». There, Navarro stressed the importance of enforcing the law as the most effective method to reduce road accidents and gave an example of how new technologies play a very important role and help monitor and control that the Road Safety Law is met.

mouth’. All of these negative factors are adding up and putting even more pressure on Sue, Rod and the Centre. This dire situation hasn’t come about through bad management, but through a series of extreme circumstances beyond the Centre’s control but ultimately the ones who will suffer if they cannot get out of this crisis are the animals. EHCRC is not only rescuing animals

The British Ambassador to Spain, Hugh Elliott, opened the ceremony, emphasising, “I am delighted to celebrate the first edition of these awards, which are a sign of the strong commercial relationship of the hundreds of British and Spanish companies that together have helped the economies of our two countries to grow. Today, we reward fifteen of these

companies that make us proud of this UKSpain trade relationship, which we hope continues to grow.” The Spanish Industry, Trade and Tourism Minister, Xiana Méndez, attended the ceremony and presented the ‘Winning Business in Spain’ awards. During her speech, Xiana Méndez highlighted the strong economic and commercial ties that characterise the relationship between Spain and the United Kingdom and the desire that “they endure post-Brexit. A broad and deep free trade agreement between the EU and the UK, the negotiations of which will

begin shortly, will be instrumental to this.” Winners of the first UK-Spain Business Awards: ❧ Category ‘Growth in the UK‘: InCom and Consentino ❧ Category ‘Driving Collaboration’: Fenin and Finnovating ❧ Category ‘Winning Business in Spain’: Babcock and Oncimmune ❧ Category ‘Partnership in Business’: Isolée and Fricodan ❧ Category ‘New UK investor’: AISTech and TRIA ❧ Category ‘Clean Growth‘: Solarcentury ❧ Category ‘British Investment in Spain’, awarded by the British Chamber of Commerce in Spain: GlaxoSmithKline and Savills Aguirre Newman ❧ Category ‘Spanish Investment in the UK’, awarded by Banco Santander: Irizar and Sagardi The United Kingdom and Spain have had an extensive business relationship for decades. New category recognizes global trend towards plant based eating Now is your chance to give all the excellent restaurants on the Costa Blanca their time in the limelight as the nominations for the Costa Blanca People’s 2020 Culinary Awards are open until Friday, 27th March. Many of the early nominations we have been receiving for the 2020 Costa Blanca People Culinary Awards give mention to restaurants providing vegan and vegetarian options to diners. There is a growing global trend towards a more sustainable plant based diet and many restaurants on the southern Costa Blanca are keen to be at the forefront of this new wave. Veganuary, the challenge of going vegan during January had a huge surge in popularity this year. A record 400,000 people worldwide signed up to the Veganuary movement in January 2020, campaign organisers revealed. Since 2014, the UK-based

group has asked people to pledge to eat a vegan diet for the month of January. It said the latest figure compares with 250,000 participants in 2019 and 170,000 in 2018. With the rise in popularity of vegan and vegetarian diets, many of our local restaurants are catering to those who choose to be meat free. As such, the organisers have decided to take this into account for the 2020 Culinary Awards and have added a new nomination category – Best Vegan or Vegetarian Menu. Restaurants providing a meat free or plant based offering can be nominated by diners and for the first time, be recognised by these important local awards. If you have been to a brilliant restaurant, café or bar to eat in the last twelve months, then make it count by nominating your top choice for the Costa Blanca People Culinary Awards.

The awards were established to celebrate all that is amazing about dining out here on the Costa Blanca. There is no similar benchmark for restaurants in this region so you know that if you see a restaurant proudly displaying a Costa Blanca People Culinary Awards trophy, they have been nominated by your fellow diners and judged by our mystery patrons who scored the restaurant in secret. Marks are given for quality, service, taste, presentation, cleanliness, value and so on. All you need to do to nominate your favourite restaurant is fill in a nomination form (simply follow this link to the Google form: https://forms.gle/WbXtPZKEUkp acJ2Z8) or send us an email with the detail of which restaurant you would like to nominate and why.

Do you need to free up some cash from your Spanish home? Are you struggling to achieve equity release or remortgage from the banks in Spain? There may be another solution. SpanishEquityRelease.Solutions is Spain's first, English speaking, fully legal and tax compliant equity release firm in Spain. We know many clients living in Spain who are “asset rich, but cash poor”. They have money tied up in a nice Spanish home but the value of their pension is dropping, their day to day cost of living in Spain is increasing, the pound does not go as far as it used to and the clients are stuck. Why stuck? If they sell their house to free up cash, they need to find somewhere to live. The cost of a downgrade is astronomical compared to the UK so suddenly after they sell, there is very little left to buy another home. Perhaps they have lived in this home for 10, 15 or 20 years. They know their neighbours, the area appeals to them, they have done upgrades to the house and it is in fact more than just a house in the sun, it's their home. They don't necessarily want to leave. The expat community in particular in Spain is getting older- Many of the expatriates we meet are worried about the cost of healthcare in the future. Some of our clients have debts to pay off, a mortgage that feels like a weight on their shoulders. Maybe they want to give the children and heirs a legup now, while they need it rather than wait until they leave

their biggest asset behind them in their will. Their daughter has a wedding, their son needs a deposit for a home back in the UK. Maybe the client wishes to spend the money on a cruise around the world- whatever they need money for, we might just be able to help. SpanishEquityRelease.Solutio ns have teamed up with some major investors who are here to help our clients in their senior years. We are heading an investment fund which is ready to put money into property owners pockets right now by selling their home at a discounted price. Why do owners take a discount? In exchange for this drop in price, the seller is given an usufructo - a legal right to live in that house for the rest of their lives or until they decide to go into state care. The original owner pays no rent, they are no longer responsible for certain taxes and costs, and nobody needs to know that they have passed ownership over to a third party. It is all registered through the notary and perfectly safe for both the investors and the sellers. There are many ways for you to get paid too- You can opt for a lump sum plus a monthly income. This income will in part derive from the performance of the property market (including

your home) so you won't lose out on benefiting from a Spanish Property market that is predicted to rise! Maybe you just want a lump sum- that is fine too. 'No Pension? No Problem. We'll instantly convert your home into a generous tax efficient pension and you can get the right to remain there the rest of your life rent free'. Everything is possible! If you wish to find out more, a representative will be in touch with you. If we both feel we are a good match, we proceed to get an independent valuation from Tinsa, the national valuation company. They come to look at your property, compare it to everything else that has been sold in the region and work out the real value of your home if it was on the general market. At this stage the investment group will make you an offer. You can accept or reject it but if you accept, we’ll sign a seller's contract and get the deal wrapped up in as little time as possible. You pay for nothing- legal work, valuation, certificate of habitation, notary, taxes etc are all taken from the investors contribution. Get in touch with www.SpanishEquityRelease.Sol utions, www.spanishsolutions.net or call Nicola on 966761741.

Celebrating ten years of St Patrick’s Day Parades in Cabo Roig In Cabo Roig, the first sign of summer arriving is not the swallows returning from their winter migration but the annual Saint Patrick’s Day Parade. Of course, on that day everybody is Irish, no matter where they are from. Following the 2019 parade the decision was taken to organise all future parades on the Sunday closest to St Patrick’s Day so this year, as many of you already know, it will be held on the Sunday prior to St Patricks Day, 15th March. The decision was taken so as to ensure that as many people as possible could attend on a nonworking and a non-school day, at least for most of us, but especially for the children, who are one of the most important reasons that the day is organised, and who now play such an important part in the celebration and in the parade itself here on the Orihuela Costa. And being the 10th anniversary of the parade in Cabo Roig, if we want to ensure that it the biggest and the best celebration yet it is so important that we make it easy for those wishing to go along and thereby maximise the number of people who can attend. Who would have thought that from that quiet winters night those many years ago, when the idea was first floated by Brendan Gormley, that we would now be

organising this huge event, and anticipating an attendance approaching 20,000 people. The first fundraising events were held by Jim (Bog Road), Ger (Smiling Jacks), Leo (Bar Liquid), Chris (Poco Loco), Little Joe (Bar

parade in the Valencian region. Sligo Co. Councillor Jerry Lundy was the first parade grand Marshall and he did his bit in convincing the local government that the parade was here to stay. And so it is, ten years on, now

Med) in an attempt to generate the necessary funds to get the parade off the ground and together with local residents at the time, Dermot and Breda O’Toole, Ena and Harry, Greg Daly, Treasa and Donal Raftery the parade became a reality. Dermot was the first St. Patrick to walk in the parade and although the organisers weren’t as prepared as they would have liked they were still able to attract around 4000 people of all different nationalities to Cabo Roig for the first ever St. Patrick’s

under the Presidency of Raymond Kearney and with the support of Ireland’s Ambassador to Spain, Síle Maguire. It has certainly moved on a step or two since those early beginnings. Now the biggest parade in mainland Europe and is listed by National Geographic as 9th in the top ten best parades in the world, only two behind Dublin itself, little did those organisers and fundraisers know back in 2010 that it would blossom into the major event that it most certainly is today.

Amazon creates 1,000 new jobs near Murcia airport Amazon jobs offered in Spain have historically been in Barcelona or Madrid, but the latest recruitment drive – seeking 200 employees at first – is in the Murcia Region. The online retail giant is expecting to open its logistics centre in Los Martínez del Puerto, very close to the airport, in May. It is predicted to create 1,000 new jobs directly, in addition to the 200 to be taken on in time for its opening. Located next to the motorway between Murcia city and Cartagena, the hub building takes up about one-sixth of the 12-acre site and will serve the east coast and eastern Andalucía. Amazon has been expanding constantly in Spain since the amazon.es site was launched in 2011 – by the end of last year, a total of 7,000 permanent employees were on its books, of which 2,200 were taken on in 2019 alone. Last year's new jobs were in the logistics centres and also software engineers, data scientists and Cloud experts.

GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP Sterling had a busy week, but the movements sometimes appeared counterintuitive. The week started in a familiar way when the UK’s Chief Negotiator David Frost reiterated the view that the UK may diverge from EU standards and put pressure on the pound as an indication that trade negotiations may be difficult to resolve. The pound fell an average of 0.3%, losing two fifths of a euro cent. However, when it came to the employment data, investors appeared to ignore the slowdown on wages growth and 0.5% quarterly fall in labour productivity. The pound made initial gains due to the positive numbers - 180k jobs added in Q4 2019, 3.8% unemployment rate and a record high 76.5% employment rate although it gave most of those gains back by the end of the day. The announcement of inflation data also had an impact on the pound, which moved lower despite inflation data coming in higher than expected. Headline CPI inflation accelerated from 1.3% to 1.8%, its highest level since July last year. After initial gains, sterling once again retreated as investors considered that in light of the data, higher interest rates from the Bank of England are unlikely in the

near future. It seems that investors have been unsettled for most of the week, and are anticipating disappointing provisional PMI results which could add further pressure. There was no significant news from Europe and the euro had a relatively quiet week. Once again, Germany was in focus as the economy stalled – GDP expanded by 0.3% but imports increased and exports decreased. Unsurprisingly, ZEW’s surveys of institutional investors in Germany and pan-Euroland found them less confident in February than a month earlier. In Germany, economic sentiment “decreased sharply in February, falling 18.0 points to 8.7”. For the euro zone as a whole the reading fell 15 points to 10.4 as the mood remains downbeat. The ZEW measures were the only ecostats of any consequence from Europe and they made investors disinclined to embrace the euro. It lost ground on almost every front, falling nearly half a cent against sterling. Investors are not expecting any surprises when the European Central Bank publishes a summary of its last monetary policy meeting, and in general the euro appears to be focussed on keeping afloat until the economy across Europe shows some improvement.

Parking in Alicante more expensive than Madrid A parking space in Alicante is prime real estate. So much so that prices have surpassed even that of capital city Madrid. A recently published study revealed that parking spaces in Alicante city centre are changing hands for €25,316 – a full €1500 more than in many parts of Madrid. The study, which looked at parking costs throughout the Valencian Community, revealed that high demand and low availability have kept prices high with Alicante topping the polls for most expensive city in the region for parking. Second from the top of the list is Santa Pola. The study was conducted by Fotocasa, a real estate portal, which looked at the cost of buying a parking spot across the region. Alicante city centre was described as one of the most expensive and therefore ‘inacessible’ cities in Spain for parking. In Madrid city centre, a parking space can go for around €23,500 – almost €2000 less than in Alicante. Of course, Madrid does have its exclusive areas and these top out at €27,563 (Salamanca neighbourhood), €29,519 (the exclusive Chamberí area) and €25,692 (Arganzuela).

To put Alicante parking prices in perspective, not even the classiest, high demand neighbourhoods of Barcelona have parking spaces this expensive. Commenting on the study’s findings, president of the provincial Association of Real Estate Agents Marifé Esteso, said that “the demand for parking in the centre is a constant....there simply is not enough parking in areas, for motorcycles and disabled people. People who work in the city centre have no choice but to rent a parking space to be

able to park every day.” Alicante has always had high parking prices – in fact, Esteso recalls that during the ‘boom’ years, parking spaces in front of government buildings were changing hands for as much as €90,000. Bird mystery solved Security camera footage from an industrial park in Tarragona, in northeastern Spain, has shed light on what caused the death of more than 100 birds that were discovered on a highway near the site. The footage shows a car driving into a flock of low-flying starlings, some of which start dropping to the ground. Investigators from the Catalan department of agriculture had already posited the theory that the birds might have been hit by a vehicle on the busy highway that connects Tarragona with the municipality of Salou. The bodies of the animals were found near the Iqoxe chemical plant, where an explosion in January killed three people and injured seven others, leading to speculation about the possibility of a toxic cloud behind the death of the starlings. The results of a post-mortem examination of several birds have not been officially released yet, but investigators ruled out the toxic cloud hypothesis, as there were no reports of B U S I N E S S

leaks in the area. Instead, Catalan officials said that the 150 birds were probably hit by a vehicle or electrocuted by power lines. However, the utility Endesa ruled out this latter option, saying there are no records of power flow disruptions, which occur when an object or animal hits a transmission line. Endesa also said there are no transmission towers near the spot where the birds were found dead, although investigators noted that there is one tower located around 50 meters from the site.

Useful utility room storage ideas Nothing beats a perfectly organised utility room for all your laundry and cleaning. But choosing the right utility room storage will help to optimise workflow and make everyday tasks simple. From recycling bins to a sliding shelf for easy loading, there are many storage options to consider in order to meet the practicalities of modern life. Utility rooms and laundries are becoming ever more important as people switch to open-plan layouts where noisy appliances can ruin the ambience. Properly planned, these little rooms can be a huge asset, giving you space for a washing machine, dryer, sink, laundry baskets and ironing paraphernalia, away from the main kitchen. With additional storage, they can work as a secondary kitchen, with spaces for pots, pans and appliances – even an extra fridge or freezer. Remember, you can never have too much storage. A combination of open shelves (for towels etc) and closed cupboards to safely store detergents is the most practical solution. So if you're looking to make your utility room really work for you, take some inspiration from these great utility room storage ideas below. 1. Tall units for your laundry and cleaning needs Tall units with super convenient shelves will provide lots of storage and ensure everything is kept tidy and

close to hand – it's also great for concealing items you don't want on display. It's ideal for storing ironing boards and vacuum cleaners. 2. Ergonomic height for appliances Doing the laundry can be tiresome work, so make life easier for yourself by thinking about your access to appliances and equipment or tools.

For example, it's a good idea to lift the washing machine off the floor to minimise bending. 3. Hanging rail When planning your laundry, make space for a hanging rail – putting clothes on hangers as soon as they come out of the washer or dryer minimises the need for ironing. 4. Consider recycling solutions Maximise storage in your utility room for recycling and do your bit for the environment. You can place large, super strong recycling bags (buy from Amazon) in a pull-out drawer for

plastic bottles, paper and glass. 5. Stack 'em high Rather than having your washer and dryer side by side, consider going vertical and stacking them one on top of the other to reduce the footprint and save space. 6. Shelf life You can never have too much storage. Open shelving is a great option as you can see straightaway where everything is. 7. Sliding shelves for easy loading Think about the benefits of having a pull-out shelf in the unit. Sliding shelves reduce unnecessary bending – it's perfect for placing the laundry basket so it's easy to load and unload the washing machine or tumble dryer. 8. A pull out airer Here, built in hanging rails prevent the creasing of newly washed laundry – because no one wants to spend their time ironing, too – and a built in air dryer saves on those electricity bills. It's a win-win. Seek out accessories and furniture that can fold flat and stores away easily. Zig zag airers boast a classic concertina design which can fold out to a generous length. They’re great for efficient drying and airing, and can fold away just as quickly too.

Man’s best friend The dog breeds becoming increasingly popular in the UK have been revealed as part of the Kennel Club's annual report – and there's one main theme: we have fallen back in love with native breeds. The breed increasing in popularity the most, from 2018 to 2019, is the adorable brown-haired Norwich Terrier. The list of rising stars also includes the Gordon Setter (which increased by 41 percent), the much-loved Jack Russell Terrier (+30 percent), and the Queen's favourite, the Corgi (38 percent), thanks to the return of

Netflix's The Crown. But, despite these breeds falling back into favour with Brits, none have exceeded the popularity of the beloved Labrador, which has reclaimed its title of Britain's favourite dog breed. The titles was held for a short while by the French Bulldog but, with British breeds seeing a resurgence, the small French dog has been pipped to the post. Elsewhere in their research, the Kennel Club have revealed some of the breeds which have decreased in popularity over

the past 12 months. Many of these pups were breeds from overseas, including the celebrity favourite Chihuahua and the exotic Siberian Husky. "High profile owners and popular culture can have a huge impact on the popularity of certain breeds, though we'd urge people to always do their research rather than follow a trend," Bill Lambert, Kennel Club spokesperson explains. "The Jack Russell for example has certainly seen a surge of interest since

rescue dog Dilyn first put his paws through the door of Downing Street in September, and at Crufts 2020 there will be more Jack Russells than ever before competing for the silver Best in Show

Spanish scientists make mircoplastics breakthrough

A research group has developed an ingenious material capable of absorbing microplastics from the sea. The hybrid substance has the ability to extract polluting materials, including dyes and other contaminants. With its metal-organic structure (MOF74) and porous carbon, the material can be used with a magnet to clean up aquatic environments. A team of chemistry postgraduates, led by Gemma Turnes, made the breakthrough at Mallorca’s University of the Balearic Islands (UIB). Researcher Mateo del Rio, who focused his doctoral thesis on solving water pollution problems, explained that the material is perfect for removing pollutants as it is

extremely stable, both chemically and thermally, and is also easy to regenerate. According to his study, published in the ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces scientific journal, the new hybrid material can extract pollutants from water in just ten minutes. It can be used to clean small samples of contaminated water, and could serve to monitor sea pollution, possibly leading to more extensive measures being carried out by the local authorities. The young chemist stressed the need to raise awareness in society about safeguarding the environment. He expressed his ‘hope’ that water samples be taken from the Bay of Palma to be analysed by

the group to determine pollution levels. “You have to locate where the problems are in order to act as soon as possible and respond to natural disasters,” he added. There is currently much concern about the overexploitation of natural resources, which has led to a range of measures being rolled out across the island. Between Mallorca and Menorca alone, it is estimated that some 752 million plastic particles weighing a total of 3.7 tons are present in the sea. The vast majority are microplastics of less than five millimetres in size, as detailed in a recent study by the Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies.

Muscat

Muscat is the capital and largest metropolitan city of Oman. It is also the seat of government and largest city in the Governorate of Muscat. Muscat is also considered as a Global City. According to the National Centre for Statistics and Information, the total population of Muscat Governorate reached 1.56 million as of September 2015. The metropolitan area spans approximately 3,500 km2 (1,400 sq mi) and includes six provinces called wilayats. Known since the early 1st century CE as an important trading port between the west and the east, Muscat was ruled by various indigenous tribes as well as foreign powers such as the Persians, the Portuguese Empire and the Ottoman Empire at

various points in its history. A regional military power in the 18th century, Muscat's influence extended as far as East Africa and Zanzibar. As an important port-town in the Gulf of Oman, Muscat attracted foreign tradesmen and settlers such as the Persians and the Balochis. Since the ascension of Qaboos bin Said as Sultan of Oman in 1970, Muscat has experienced rapid infrastructural development that has led to the growth of a vibrant economy and a multi-ethnic society.

infrastructural development of Muscat, which provided new opportunities for trade and tourism in the 1980s – 1990s, attracting migrants from around the region. On June 6, 2007, Cyclone Gonu hit Muscat causing extensive damage to property, infrastructure and commercial activity. Muscat might hold the 2016 Arab League Summit. Early photographs of the city and harbor, taken in the early 20th century by German explorer and photographer, Hermann Burchardt, are now held at the Ethnological Museum of Berlin.

Geography The Tropic of Cancer passes south of the area. It is bordered to its west by the plains of the Al Batinah Region and to its east by Ash Sharqiyah Region. The interior plains of the Ad Dakhiliyah Region border Muscat to the south, while the Gulf of Oman forms the northern and western periphery of the city. The water along to coast of Muscat runs deep, forming two natural harbours, in Muttrah and Muscat. The Western Al Hajar Mountains run through the northern coastline of the city. Volcanic rocks are apparent in the Muscat area, and are composed of serpentine and diorite, extending along the Gulf of Oman coast for ten or twelve 16 kilometres from the district of Darsait to Yiti. Plutonic rocks constitute the hills and mountains of Muscat and span approximately 30 miles (48 km) from Darsait to Ras Jissah. These igneous rocks consists of serpentine, greenstone and basalt, typical of rocks in southeastern regions of the Arabian Peninsula.

History Evidence of communal activity in the area around Muscat dates back to the 6th millennium BCE in Ras al-Hamra, where burial sites of fishermen have been found. The graves appear to be well formed and indicate the existence of burial rituals. South of Muscat, remnants of Harappan pottery indicate some level of contact with the Indus Valley Civilisation. Muscat's notability as a port was acknowledged as early as the 1st century CE by the Greek geographer Ptolemy, who referred to it as Cryptus Portus (the Hidden Port), and by Pliny the Elder, who called it Amithoscuta. The port fell to a Sassanid invasion in the 3rd century CE, under the rule of Shapur I, while conversion to Islam occurred during the 7th century. Muscat's importance as a trading port continued to grow in the centuries that followed, under the influence of the Azd dynasty, a local tribe. With the assistance of the British, Qaboos bin Said put an end to the Dhofar uprising and consolidated disparate tribal territories. He renamed the country the Sultanate of Oman (called Muscat and Oman hitherto), in an attempt to end to the interior's isolation from Muscat. Qaboos enlisted the services of capable Omanis to fill positions in his new government, drawing from such corporations as Petroleum Development Oman (PDO). New ministries for social services such as health and education were established. The construction of Mina Qaboos, a new port conceived initially by Sa`id bin Taimur, was developed during the early days of Qaboos' rule. Similarly, a new international airport was developed in Muscat's Seeb district. A complex of offices, warehouses, shops and homes transformed the old village of Ruwi in Muttrah into a commercial district. The first five-year development plan in 1976 emphasised

Climate Muscat features a hot, arid climate with long and very hot summers and warm "winters". In general precipitation is scarce in Muscat, with several months on average seeing only a trace of rainfall. However, in recent years, heavy precipitation events from tropical systems originating in the Arabian Sea have affected the city.

Economy Muscat's economy, like that of Oman, is dominated by trade. The more traditional exports of the city included dates, mother of pearl, and fish. Many of the souks of Muttrah sell these items and traditional Omani artefacts. Petroleum Development Oman has been central to Muscat's economy since at least 1962 and is the country's second largest employer, after the government. The Muscat Securities Market is the principal stock exchange of Oman. It is located in Central Business District of Muscat and it was established in 1988, and has since distinguished itself as a pioneer among its regional peers in terms of transparency and disclosure regulations and requirements. Mina'a Sultan Qaboos, Muscat's main trading port, is a trading hub between the Persian Gulf, the Indian subcontinent and the Far East with an annual volume of about 1.6 million tons.

I’ve never got any money I earn money, and then I spend it. Then I put debt very easily on my credit card. I am simply not bringing enough in every month to finance the kind of lifestyle that I want. My friends seems to be able to buy things - we all go to the gym, and all go out socialising but they don’t seem to be running out of money. My credit card is maxed out and I am looking at getting another credit card. I am aware that I can’t go on like this, but cutting back would mean not going out, or having the things I want. What did we all do before credit and money lending was available to us? We lived within our means, and this is what you should do if you don’t want the situation to get worse. You are risking bankruptcy which will affect you detrimentally in the long run as you will have a black mark against you for future borrowing, say if you want to buy a house or car. Don’t think that your friends are any better off; unless they have very well paid jobs or rich parents, there stands a good chance that they are in the same boat. If you don’t have the cash to buy something, tell yourself you shouldn’t buy it. You can take the bull by the horns now and cut down on the things you spend money on each month. i.e. buying clothes, meals out, drinking. Ask yourself do you really need another pair of expensive jeans when you have eight pairs in the wardrobe already? Yes, it’s not going to be much fun, but you can enjoy yourself without spending money. Cancel that gym membership, open your front door and jog to one of the outdoor gyms that we have in Spain. When the better weather arrives, use the swimming pools that are available to us in this lovely climate. Try going to an inexpensive bar and buying a bottle of wine between you, rather than paying inflated prices in clubs. Look at the things you use and consume each month, and find cheaper alternatives. Spain launches Brexit hotline Government to help The Spanish government has announced the launch of a dedicated hotline to answer all queries from Brits living in Spain about the implications of Brexit. Callers can ring 060 when in Spain or +34 902 887060 if calling from abroad and an automated system will offer the choice of either Spanish or English and ask if you are Spanish citizen wanting to live in the UK or a Brit in Spain. You will then be offered a choice of information on the different issues most pressing for Brits in Spain during the transition period: residency, healthcare, retirement pensions, social security and driving licences. Each option comes with an automated message about the current status relating to those matters and how it will remain unchanged during the transition period. The service also offers the option of speaking to an operator for those requiring further information or with a specific query not dealt with by the automated options. A large number of queries already received from Brits living in Spain have been about the issue of residency. The Spanish government has updated its Brexit information page to inform British citizens already living in Spain, or planning to do so before the end of the transition period about the need to be properly registered.

It states that for the time being the process remains the same as it was before Brexit and the green credit card sized (or older A4) certificates will remain valid throughout the transition period until 31st December 2020. “During this transition period UK nationals and their family members resident in Spain who are nationals of

non-EU countries will maintain their rights derived from the application of EU law (except for the right to vote and stand in elections to the European Parliament and the right to use the EU Citizens Initiative),” states an update in the Brexit section on the Moncloa website.

“Once the transition period ends, the Withdrawal Agreement stipulates that your rights of residence, work, study and social security will be maintained. “You have to bear in mind that the registration certificates (the green certificate) and ID cards of family members of the EU citizen obtained before the end of the transition period will subsequently serve to accredit their legal residence in Spain and benefit from the provisions of the Withdrawal Agreement.” New paperwork But the website does state that plans are afoot for new paperwork specifically for Brits resident in Spain post-Brexit. “The Spanish government is working together with the European Commission to have a Foreign Identity Card that explicitly mentions your condition as beneficiary of the Withdrawal Agreement. The procedure for processing this card in the coming months will be completed soon.” It adds: “The rights of British citizens and their family members who begin their legal residence in Spain after the transition period will be those established by the agreement regulating future relations; if there is none, the general arrangements governing foreign residents in Spain will be applicable.”

shopkeepers survive online retail age A package of financial and other types of assistance to help high-street retailers, small family-run shops and village stores, especially in rural Spain, is being prepared by the national government in a bid to keep them trading. Online shopping is threatening the presence of physical shops practically everywhere in the world, and Spain is particularly vulnerable to this as nearly three-quarters of companies of all types are small and medium-sized businesses, owned and run by families, and with staff numbers in single figures. This is even more pronounced in Spain's least-populated areas, such as rural parts a long distance from their nearest coast or large city. Minister for industry, commerce and tourism, Reyes Maroto, says a scheme is being drawn up to help retailers 'modernise' their facilities and adapt to the 'digital age' and new consumer habits, in order to become 'more competitive'. New technology and training on how to use it – and encouraging its use –

setting up online and international sales systems, and developing protection against anti-competition practices are among the key areas the ministry wants to act in. Support and advice via the Chambers of Commerce and local trade associations will also be offered. As yet, the amount of funding due to be set aside for the schemes has not been confirmed. Reyes Maroto has been working on these ideas ever since she first joined the cabinet in summer 2018. She wants to adapt the strategies to help streamline the transition for younger workers taking over from those due to retire, and to make retail technology easy to use for more elderly customers without computer skills.

Spain to introduce tougher ‘Google Tax’ delayed until December due to US pressure asylum requirements The Spanish government is planning to approve one of its signature projects at the weekly Cabinet meeting today: the digital services tax, known popularly as the “Google tax.” This will place Spain one step ahead of an initiative by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) to address the taxation challenges posed by the digitalisation of the global economy. The international organisation is in talks with 137 countries to tax multinationals where their users are based and to disincentivise profit-shifting to low-tax jurisdictions. Tech giants such as Google, Facebook, Apple and Amazon, as well as other large companies, are known to engage in these practices to lower their tax bills. But faced with pressure from the United States, which is threatening to impose retaliatory tariffs on countries that tax American companies, Spain will not be immediately collecting the tax on a quarterly basis. Instead it will wait until the end of 2020, when the OECD is expected to have finalized its own proposal. “This is not a suspension of the tax, just an end-of-the-year

collection,” said Spain’s Deputy Prime Minister and Economy Minister Nadia Calviño, speaking in Brussels. The decision to postpone collection of the digital service tax illustrates the difficulties that many countries are experiencing due to threats of new tariffs by the US, where most of the world’s

big tech companies are headquartered. In March 2018 the European Commission proposed creating new rules for a fair taxation of the digital economy because “there is a disconnect, or ‘mismatch,’ between where value is created and where taxes are paid.” But Washington says it could slap new tariffs on automobile imports if a digital tax is introduced. The French case In the case of France, which unilaterally introduced its own

digital tax in July 2019 and even started collecting it, the threats have worked: payments have been placed on hold after US President Donald Trump said he would add tariffs of up to 100 percent on French goods, including wine. Spain is now following in France’s footsteps by approving a national tax but waiting to collect it until a global fee is – hopefully – agreed on at the OECD. Spain’s Foreign Minister, Arancha González Laya, has admitted that the French way “could be a model for Spain.” Spain would like the OECD or the EU to lead the way on a digital tax, but has said that it will forge ahead with a national tax in the event that global negotiations fail. “We are working in the international and European arenas, but without giving up on progress at the national level,” said Calviño. The Spanish government is also set to approve the so-called Tobin tax, or financial transactions tax. Sources at the Finance Ministry said the projects slated for approval this week are nearly identical to the ones that were presented to Congress last year, but which were put on hold due to early elections.

The Spanish government is drafting a new law that will restrict the right to asylum, following the path taken by the European Union in recent years. A draft of the bill limits access to asylum application at migrant holding centres, and expands the list of legitimate reasons for denial. The issue could be a cause of friction within Spain’s new coalition government, made up of the Socialist Party (PSOE) and the leftist Unidas Podemos. A spokesperson for the Interior Ministry declined to comment on the plans. The current legislation, which dates back to 2009, is viewed as obsolete because migration patterns have changed enormously since then. While Spain once processed very few asylum applications, last year it had 118,000 requests. This makes Spain the third recipient of potential refugees in the EU, not far behind France and Germany. The new rules are being drafted in response to several ultimatums from Brussels. Spain has been delaying the adaptation of its legislation to EU directives, and it has used up all its available time for doing so. The European Commission has warned Madrid repeatedly, most recently in October 2019, that failure to adopt European guidelines could land Spain before the EU Court of Justice. The government, which was formed in January of this year following the repeat election of November 2019, is now working to adapt to EU rules, and the new legislation will also include a few initiatives of its own. The final version will depend on the outcome of negotiations between various actors, including the ministries of social security and migrations and foreign affairs. The draft bill reflects the EU’s more restrictive immigration policy that resulted from the 2015 migrant crisis, when more than one million refugees arrived

Stricter deadlines Spain is considering setting a deadline for filing asylum

also mean expanding the legitimate reasons for denying asylum. One reason is whether there are any safe areas in the applicant’s country of origin where he or she could settle down. The draft bill defines what constitutes a safe country according to EU guidelines. Although each application must be reviewed individually, this change of criteria means that if the asylum seeker comes from a country considered safe by Spain – say, Morocco – the application could be turned down. The same criteria would apply if the asylum seeker regularly resides in a third country deemed safe. Reviewers will also assess “whether there are any ties between the person and a third country that would make it reasonable for him or her to be sent there.” The Interior Ministry is also considering eliminating a crossministerial committee that

applications. EU legislation establishes a period of 30 days, but this is not currently contemplated by Spanish law. The deadline will be even stricter for foreign nationals at holding centers (CIE). The Spanish Interior Ministry has proposed giving these migrants up to 10 days to file their application after being informed of their right to do so. Police sources have repeatedly noted that migrants often file for asylum simply as a way to postpone deportation. In 2019 there were 2,164 applications filed by CIE interns, representing 2% of all requests that year. Adapting to EU directives will

currently makes decisions on asylum requests, because this step “slows down the process tremendously.” The Office of Asylum and Refugees currently has more than 120,000 requests pending processing, even though it is reviewing cases five times faster than it used to. Not all new measures involve tougher conditions. The draft legislation also introduces greater legal security for asylum seekers by recognizing them as such from the moment they express a desire to file for protection. This was already happening in practice, but will be now established by law.

in Greece and Italy. It was then that Brussels decided to get more restrictive with so-called economic migrants, those whose safety is not in danger back home and who are not entitled to international protection. Europe’s plans include accelerating and increasing deportation of economic migrants, securing the borders, and forcing EU member states to accept a fairer relocation system where everyone shares responsibility for asylum seekers, not just the frontline countries. “The key lies in having a quick system for differentiating between people who have the possibility of requesting asylum and those who do not,” said a high-ranking EU official. “Those who are not refugees must be sent back.”

Spain drops out of race to replace Britain in EU

NEW TO SPAIN OR ALREADY RESIDENT? GET ANSWERS TO THE QUESTIONS THAT MATTER TO YOU

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez

Spain is not willing to compete to replace Britain as one of the three driving forces of the European Union, together with France and Germany. Instead of trying to fulfil the role of the United Kingdom, which officially left the EU on January 31 in a process known as Brexit, the government of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is opting for ad hoc alliances with different member states depending on the issue at hand and Spain’s own interests, said diplomatic sources. “We could be with Germany or Italy on issues like immigration, and with France with matters such as a digital tax,” said sources familiar with the matter. The new strategy represents a dramatic change to Spain’s former ambition of beating candidates such as Italy or Poland to join the traditional FrenchGerman bloc. While Britain’s departure from the EU has triggered a movement to reshape political alliances, Spain’s current administration is dropping out of the race to fill the void left by London. This diplomatic shift fits in well within the new EU, where a growing number of ad hoc alliances are being crafted by member states to deal with specific issues, as the old FrancoGerman axis starts to wane. The new model also seems to meet the needs of Spain’s first coalition government since the democratic transition of the late 1970s. Formed by the proEuropean Spanish Socialist Party (PSOE) and the Euro-skeptics of the leftist Unidas Podemos, the newly formed Spanish government will find it easier to accommodate its own differing views about the European project by refusing to adhere to any one specific bloc within the EU. “The idea of a new directorate has become outdated,” said Spanish diplomatic sources just 48 hours after French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit to Poland, where he revived the idea that the so-called Weimar Triangle – a loose alliance between France, Germany and Poland – could take the reins of Europe following

Britain’s departure. Germany, meanwhile, has close ties to the Netherlands, another country that longs for a key spot in the EU club. Italy, as the thirdlargest economy in the bloc, seemed like the natural candidate to fill Britain’s shoes, but its political instability, and above all the tremendous strength of the Euro-skeptics there (Matteo Salvini’s right-wing League won the European elections last year with 34.2% of the vote, although more recently it lost out to the left at the regional elections in EmiliaRomagna) work against it, given Germany’s and particularly Macron’s clearly pro-European views. The question marks hanging over Italy had made Spain the most likely candidate to become the third member of the European leaders’ club. With a population of 46.6 million (eight million more than Poland), the bloc’s fourth largest economy is also one of the most enthusiastic about Europe’s political and economic integration. But Spain’s Foreign Ministry does not consider seeking out this position a priority. “There is a debate about replacing Britain, as though it could actually be replaced,” said a diplomatic source ironically.

Hard act to follow Britain has a population of 66 million and an economy twice the

size of Spain’s and five times that of Poland. It also has nuclear weapons, a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, and is home to the biggest financial centrr in the euro zone. No other triple alliance could beat the combined weight of Berlin, Paris and London. And in fact, both France and Germany have made it clear that Britain will continue to be a privileged partner in defense and foreign affairs, even after Brexit. As the EU prepares for a twoyear “Conference for the Future of Europe,” Spain is clearly on the side of deeper political and economic ties, even though it refuses to commit to backing France and Germany on all issues. Diplomatic sources said that the Sánchez administration has been welcomed by the more proEuropean member states, “since it could be an ally to push back against other tendencies that oppose integration.” The first post-Brexit test of political alliances will be the new Multiannual Financial Framework for 2021-2027. Spain is planning to attend the February 20 summit as part of a loose grouping that’s been dubbed “Friends of Cohesion,” which includes Poland and Hungary, which are led by right-wing governments, as well as Portugal, which is governed by the left.

Best European cities to invest in There have been some new additions to the ranking of the most attractive European cities to invest in the real estate sector this year. Last year Lisbon took over from Berlin at the top, however this year, Paris has overtaken the Portuguese capital and we see the addition of two Spanish cities. This is the reading we can get from the study carried out by the PwC and Urban Land Institute consulting firm, after carrying out surveys of investment funds, real estate firms, banks and other professional investors. According to their findings, the French capital will be the star of real estate investment in Europe this year, thanks above all to the urban development project it is designing known as Greater Paris, focused on extending the city limits and creating new business centres and new economic poles that encourage innovation. This is a project that began years ago and will continue to be developed throughout this

decade, with a planned investment of more than 30,000 million euros. One step behind Paris is Berlin, one of the cities that usually tops this ranking, followed by Frankfurt. London is the fourth city on the list, after having disappeared from the top 20 last year. Madrid is the first Spanish name to appear in the ranking and is in fifth place, after falling one place from last year, while Barcelona is back up to ninth place again, after having dropped to 27th place in the previous ranking. Spain is the second European country with more than one city in the top 10, only surpassed by Germany which sees 4 of its cities make the list, an outcome that demonstrates that the domestic real estate market there continues to be one of the most attractive for investors. What are the reasons? It is one of the fastest growing European economies, one of the countries where alternative assets (student

residences, retirement homes, affordable rental projects...) have more potential and affordable rent compared to other places in the Old Continent. Ahead of the Catalan capital, Barcelona, we can find Amsterdam, Munich and Hamburg. Lisbon closes the top 10 this year, surpassing Milan, Dublin, Brussels, Warsaw, Vienna, Luxembourg, Zurich, Stockholm, Copenhagen and Prague, these cities making up the top 20 respectively. Here is the list of the top 10 cities that will attract the most real estate investment in 2020, according to the large international operators: 1. Paris 2. Berlin 3. Frankfurt 4. London 5. Madrid 6. Amsterdam 7. Munich 8. Hamburg 9. Barcelona 10. Lisbon

1

Show the home from the entrance to the exit. This means to welcome the buyers through the front door, and not through patio doors, or any other access into the home. You need to create the perfect flow to present the property at it’s best. Working your way through the lounge, to the kitchen, then bedrooms and bathroom. Then finish with the garden.

2

Avoid talking too much. Features and upgrades are not all welcomed in the same way, so don’t be eager to talk about them as soon as your buyer walks through your door. What you believe to be an upgrade, may not be classed as one at all, in your buyer’s eyes.

The recent DANA and storm Gloria have left the Costa Blanca struggling to be ready to greet holiday makers. The fear is that a poor reception for Easter tourist will have a knock-on effect and discourage summer holidaymakers from booking. Questions have been raised about the country’s coastal development policies, as councils and business-owners struggle to repair and rebuildready for the 2020 holiday season. Gloria ripped apart coastline towns and resorts from Catalunya in the North, before moving down to the Costa Blanca and Costa Calida. The storm wreaked havoc locally in Torrevieja, Orihuela Cosat and Pilar. Waves of five meters in height combined with torrential rain and galeforce winds, causing over €54 million in damage according to estimates from the Ministry for Ecological Transition. A total of 13 people were killed, while over 200 resorts were directly affected. Chringuitos, restaurants and rental companies saw their premises completely destroyed. In some popular resorts, beaches completely disappeared and sea defence barriers were displaced, with up to 35 metres of land being

reclaimed back by the ocean. Beach-front properties were also affected with many holiday home owners still not realising their homes have been severely damaged. Some had only just been repaired after the heavy floods brought by the September DANA. Local councils have been racing against the clock to repair the damage caused, ferrying in sand and materials to rebuild the sea defences and beaches ready for the influx of tourists that descend on the region for the Easter break. They have even been asking members of the local community to help them clean and clear beaches of rubbish and plastic to ensure they are tourist ready in time. However local business owners are less than sympathetic as they demand long term solutions and accountability from developers, because in their

eyes it was ‘only a matter of time.’ They are also urging local councils to start using nature as inspiration to help with flood prevention instead of fighting against it, pumping hundreds of thousands of euros into sea defences and reclaiming land from the Mediterranean for further construction. Hugo Moran, the Secretary of State for the Environment said: “We have to rethink the way of managing the coast. To protect the coast we need solutions based on both nature and engineering.” The new philosophy comes as local councils struggle to allocate storm damage recovery into their already stretched 2020 budgets. Mayors are questioning the feasibility of injecting millions into replacement breakwater solutions that will simply need replacing the next time a severe storm hits.

This Week´s Movie Picks Shrek 2 Sunday 1 March – BBC1, 4.00 pm Shrek (Mike Myers) has rescued Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz), got married, and now is time to meet the parents. Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey (Eddie Murphy) set off to Far, Far Away to meet Fiona's mother and father. But not everyone is happy. Shrek and King Harold (John Cleese) find it hard to get along, and there's tension in the marriage. It's not just the family who are unhappy. Prince Charming (Rupert Everett) returns from a failed attempt at rescuing Fiona, and works alongside his mother, the Fairy Godmother (Jennifer Saunders), to try and find a way to get Shrek away from Fiona.

Central Intelligence Saturday 29 February – Channel 4, 10.00 pm Calvin Joyner was voted in high school the guy most likely to succeed. 20 years later he's an accountant. As his high school reunion approaches, he tries to make contact with his old schoolmates. And someone named Bob Stone contacts him. He says that he was known as Robbie Weirdicht in school. Calvin remembers that he was picked on, as a matter of fact after an extremely nasty prank he left school. They agree to meet and Calvin is surprised by how much he has changed. Bob asks Calvin to help him out. He says yes and the next thing he knows some men burst into his home. They're CIA, the one in charge is looking for Stone, she says he's a rogue agent. When they can't find Bob they leave. Later he approaches Calvin telling him, he is not a rogue agent, he's trying to find a person known as the Black Badger who is planning to sell some information that in the wrong hands can be disastrous. so he needs Calvin's help to stop him. Calvin's not sure whom he should believe

Sitcom talks for Ant and Dec Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly have revealed they want to do a sitcom in future as they prepare for their telly careers to take off again. Ahead of the return of Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway which started at the weekend, the Geordie duo have unveiled their future TV dreams. The ITV favourites told how they have held “extensive talks” about the potential project and hope it will become a reality in the near future.

Ant said: “We’ve talked about it quite seriously in the past. We’ve got quite close. “We did a version of The Likely Lads, which we loved. “And we loved the process of it rehearsing it and doing it in front of a live studio audience.” Dec added: “You’ve got to get the idea right and make sure it’s the right thing at the right time.” He said the other problem they faced

was finding the time to do it when they've already got three big shows on the go throughout the year – I’m a Celebrity, X-Factor and Saturday Night Takeaway. Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway’s exciting return was set for last weekend, Saturday 22nd February and kicked-off with huge viewer figures and thousands tuned in to watch the nations favourite duo. It was the first episode to air on ITV in two years, after

the Geordie duo opted to take a year off in 2019. The much-anticipated comeback was be hosted live by TV regulars Ant and Dec and promises to be even bigger and better than previous seasons.

It’s pancake day! Get your eggs, butter, sugar and lemon juice at the ready, Pancake Day is here. Whether you find delight in crepe-style pancakes or you prefer the fluffy variations typically found in Scotland and the US, Pancake Day is an annual celebration enjoyed by many across the world in the lead up to the Christian festival of Easter. Shrove Tuesday, also commonly referred to as Pancake Day, is a celebration that’s observed the day before Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday marks the first day of the Christian observance of Lent, a 40-day period of abstinence that precedes Easter. As such, Ash Wednesday is the last day on which those who observe Lent can enjoy richer foods before abstaining for them, should they choose to. Throughout the centuries it’s become tradition for people to eat pancakes to mark the beginning of Lent so as to use up ingredients that they wouldn’t be allowed to eat during the 40-day period, which is how Pancake Day obtained its name. As Pancake Day always takes place 47 days before Easter Sunday, its actual date on the Gregorian calendar can vary. According to Historic UK, the term Shrove Tuesday derives from the act of Anglo-Saxon Christians confessing their sins before Lent, and thus being “shriven” of them. In some countries, including France, Germany and the United States, the day before the start of Lent is recognised with a celebration called Mardi Gras. Translated as meaning “Fat Tuesday” in French, the festivities often involve Carnival

activities such as extravagant parades. How did it start? The tradition of eating pancakes to see in the beginning of Lent has been observed in Britain since around the 16th century. The Encyclopedia of Traditional British Rural Sport outlines that this occurred because the ingredients that make up pancakes – namely eggs, butter and fat – would typically be banned during Lent. “In some parishes it was the custom for the church bell to ring at noon as the signal for people to begin frying their pancakes,” the authors of the book state. While pancake eating on Shrove Tuesday has been a custom for the past few centuries, the act of marking the beginning of Lent prior to Ash Wednesday has been around for far longer. According to the Anglo-Saxon Ecclesiastical Institutes, a text reportedly translated by writer Abbot Aelfric around 1000AD, in the week preceding Lent it was custom for Christians to confess their sins so that “the confessor

shall so shrive him as he then may hear by his deeds what he is to do [in the way of penance].” Centuries later, around the time of the 16th-century Western Christian Reformation movement, “Shrovetide”, the period of celebration before the fast of Lent, would last around a week. How is it celebrated? First and foremost, the primary focus of many people on Pancake Day is the excessive consumption of palatepleasing pancakes. Some also take part in an activity called “pancake racing”, which, as the name suggests, involves participating in a race while flipping pancakes in a frying pan. It’s believed this tradition originated in 1445, when a woman lost track of time while making pancakes on Pancake Day. As she heard the church bell ring, calling for the community to head to the church for confession, she ran out of her house to make her way to church, all the while still holding her frying pan with the pancake on top.

Junk food damages self control Researchers with Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia conducted a study and found that a diet consisting of junk food such as burgers, pizza, and fries damages the function of the hippocampus, which controls memory and helps regulate appetite, and accordingly, people continue to eat the bad food despite being full. The experts recruited 110 "lean and healthy" students and split them into two groups who followed different diets for eight days. The group who followed a Western-style diet had a laboratory breakfast of a toasted sandwich and a milkshake, high in saturated fat and added sugar, on days one and eight. Over the other six days, they consumed Belgian waffles for breakfast or dessert as well as a main meal and drink or dessert from a fast-food chain. The control group had a toasted sandwich and milkshake for breakfast, which were low in

saturated fat and added sugar, on the first and eighth day, but otherwise maintained their usual diet. Before and after the experiment, the students were asked to rate whether they liked or desired certain sugary foods. The researchers found the ratings were higher among those who had been eating junk food. That group also performed worse in memory and learning tests. "When we see cake, chocolate or crisps, for example, we remember how nice they are to eat. When we are full, the hippocampus normally suppresses these memories, reducing our desire to eat," said Professor Richard Stevenson, the lead author of the study. "We found that lean healthy young people exposed to one week of a junk food diet developed impaired hippocampal function and relatively greater desire to eat junk food when full. Junk food may then act to undermine self-control by increasing desire." However, three weeks after the experiment, the results returned to normal, suggesting damage to the hippocampus can be reversed. The study was published in the Royal Society's journal Open Science.

Good foods with a bad press The world of nutrition may seem ever more tribal and dogmatic, but healthy eating can still have its surprises. According to the experts, sausages, cheese and pickled eggs actually count as superfoods in their own right. Here are the overlooked heroes that deserve a regular spot on your plate...

Marmite According to studies by the University of York, Marmite can increase your levels of GABA, a chemical messenger associated with deeper sleep and reduced anxiety. The study authors posit this effect is due to its high levels of moodbalancing vitamin B12.

Fruit jelly Gelatin is a rich source of collagen, which is essential for skin elasticity and healthy joints. What’s more, a study at Jikei University in Tokyo found that glycine, another component of the dessert, reduces the time it takes you to fall asleep when eaten a few hours before bed.

Steamed dumplings The healthiest, trendiest form of Eastern cuisine, Japanese mushi-gyoza and Chinese dim sum are typically stuffed with shiitake mushrooms, a single portion of which is enough to lower levels of disease-causing inflammation, as well as inhibit the growth of cancerous tumours, according to journal Faseb. Plus, the fact that they’re steamed rather than fried means they’re lean, coming in at fewer than 50 calories each.

Candid Peel Not only do citrus peels contain more than double the vitamin C found in the fruit’s flesh, they’re also a source of salvestrol and limonene – compounds that multiple studies suggest can fight cancer. A little sugar will help the bitter medicine go down, so it’s worth hunting out the remnants of your Christmas cake. Or try preserved lemons, a savoury staple of North African cuisine.

Eating a big breakfast could help you burn DOUBLE the amount of calories Eating a big breakfast could help you burn double the amount of calories than if you eat a larger meal at dinner. It could be the key to losing weight while also keeping blood sugar levels steady, researchers at Lubeck University in Germany said. Their study found filling up in the morning boosts a metabolism process known as diet-induced thermogenesis (DIT). DIT refers to the number of calories the body expends to heat the body and digest food. It was shown to be twice as high for those who ate more at breakfast than at dinner. On the other hand, a low calorie breakfast increases appetite, especially for sweets, the researchers said. The findings published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism were based on a laboratory experiment of 16 men. They consumed a low and high calorie breakfast and dinner one day - and then vice versa on another. DIT was 2.5 times higher when the high calorie meal was eaten in the morning than in the evening. DIT is the body's way of heating in order to support digestion and transport of blood when eating. Different foods and meal times affect how many calories are used by the body to do it. The study also showed increases blood sugar and insulin concentrations, caused by eating a meal, was diminished after breakfast, but not so much after dinner. The results also showed eating a lowcalorie breakfast caused sweet cravings with a higher appetite. This suggests those saving all their calories for the end of the day may face consequences

because they snack more. Corresponding author Dr Juliane Richter said: 'Our results show a meal eaten for breakfast regardless of the amount of calories it contains - creates twice as high diet-induced thermogenesis as the same meal consumed for dinner. 'This finding is significant for all people as it underlines the value of eating enough at breakfast.' The study adds to increasing evidence that the best way of losing weight is to eat your largest meal in the morning - and your smallest in the evening. Dr Richter, a neurobiologist at Lubeck University, said: 'Eating more at breakfast instead of dinner could prevent obesity and high blood sugar.' Both obesity and high blood sugar can lead to a host of life-threatening illnesses including cancer, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Previous research has shown DIT is lower in people with obesity. It's seen as a measure of how well our metabolism is working. DIT can differ depending on mealtime and is generally slower in the evening and at night due to our body clocks. Dr Richter said: 'We recommend that patients with obesity as well as healthy people eat a large breakfast rather than a large dinner to reduce body weight and

prevent metabolic diseases.' Eating a large breakfast has long been thought to help prevent weight gain. A 2017 study of over 50,000 adults, which found eating a big breakfast, medium lunch and small dinner led to lower BMIs (body mass indexes). The US and Czech nutritionists tracked the participants for seven years and discovered eating the largest meal in the morning was among the most effective strategies for preventing long-term weight gain. Professor Daniela Jakubowicz, author of The Big Breakfast Diet, found that those who piled on the calories in the morning were more likely to feel satisfied, preventing snacking throughout the day. And another study by Professor Jakubowicz found that eating chocolate in the morning, when our metabolism is at its highest, prevented cravings for sweet things later on.

Famous Grouse flies to top spot The Famous Grouse has overtaken Jack Daniel’s to become Britain’s leading whisky by value, with sales topping £71 million over Christmas. The blended Scotch reported 2.6 per cent growth over the festive period, beating the US spirit which lost 9.3 per cent year-on-year. This comes as the wider blended Scotch category continued to struggle, with value down 4.1 per cent. However the whisky category in total was valued

at £393m, larger than both vodka and gin. Mark Riley, MD at The Famous Grouse owner Edrington-Beam Suntory UK, said: “It’s fantastic to see a Scotch back in the top spot. "The Famous Grouse for years has been the UK’s favourite whisky and driving force behind the blended Scotch category, so we are delighted to have reclaimed our number one spot in the UK’s largest spirits category.”

Ways to get rid of a headache, besides popping a pill Headaches are the most common form of pain. But there are different types of headaches: Tension headaches, for example, are the most common type of headache, and are due to tightness in your shoulders, neck, scalp, and jaw. This type of pain is often brought on by stress, depression, or anxiety. If your headaches are persistent or other medications just aren't cutting it, here are some other headache treatments you can consider... Acupuncture In acupuncture, thin needles are inserted under the skin to realign the flow of energy, or qi, in the body. These are fairly low in cost and course of treatment is generally recommended to be effective. An expert analysis has found acupuncture could help prevent acute migraines as well as drug treatments do and with fewer adverse side effects. Evidence also suggests that acupuncture could help people with frequent episodic or chronic tension-type. Massage For temporary relief, try rubbing your temples or getting a neck, back, head, or shoulder massage. In a small study published in the Annals of Behavioural Medicine, people with migraines who had six weekly massage sessions had less frequent migraines and better

sleep during the massage weeks and the three following weeks than a control group. Stretching Headache-relieving stretches can get at muscle tension that contributes to pain. Add them to your workout or use them when a headache looms. Try these three: neck range of motion (chin forward, upward, and toward each shoulder); shoulder shrugs (shrug up, up and forward, and up and back); and neck isometrics (press palm into forehead and hold; press hand on each side of the head). Stretch twice a day. Hold the stretch for five seconds, relax for five seconds, and repeat each stretch three to five times. Meditation Various meditation techniques can be used to focus attention and quiet the mind from distractions such as chronic pain. One small study of people with migraines in the Journal of Behavioral Medicine found that spiritual meditation reduced headache frequency and improved pain tolerance more than secular meditation and muscle relaxation. Yoga Yoga combines physical postures, breathing exercises, and meditation to boost relaxation and balance the mind, body, and spirit. In a small study in

Headache, two groups of migraine patients were randomly assigned to three months of yoga therapy or self care. Compared with the control group, the yoga participants had less frequent and less painful attacks, as well as less anxiety. Relaxation exercises Deep breathing, relaxing to music, or using mental imagery can help people unwind and possibly help with headache too. One muscle relaxation technique recommends patients lie still, breathe in and out slowly, and use a mantra to keep the mind from wandering. They then contract and relax various muscle groups, working from toes to head. The idea is to consciously tense and relax your muscle groups. Heat and cold To alleviate neck tightness, apply heat to the back of the neck. For a pulsating headache, however, skip the heat and try icing the temples. Lowering the temperature of the blood passing through that area "seems to relieve some of the throbbing. Botox Better known as a wrinklereducer, Botox injections are Health Department-approved for treating adults with chronic migraines. Multiple injections are given around the head and neck every 12 weeks.

Mental health Mental health, particularly from the perspective of suicide, has been in the spotlight this week and this can be a very hard time for family and friends who have lost people in this way. The grief and pain resurfaces, however we have to remember that grief is a natural process and although everyone deals with grief differently in their own time. The mind also is a very powerful tool, one that many of us unfortunately underestimate. We have come to care for our bodies, feeding, hydrating, exercise, clothes etc but sooo many of us forget to care for our minds. To give our minds time to unwind and rest, time to process complicated thoughts, time to align with the body. Ask yourself today - Do I care for both my body and mind? Am I mindful of everything I do every day? Am I in control of my thoughts, any negative chatter? Do I love myself from within? The mind and body have to work together, If people continue to allow negative circumstances to shape their thoughts this keeps the cycle going over and over again. If you need help to break this unhealthy cycle and by teaching and training the brain

to take on more positive patterns you can then break the sequence giving more positivity and structure to your thoughts and helping you then to rebalance your life more. There are a myriad of options available if you are in need of support. Counselling is good to talk and relearn new coping strategies, Clinical Hypnotherapy is excellent for releasing unwanted thoughts and decluttering and works very quickly, and Life Coaching is nice to give you new skills and break through barriers. Transactional Analysis is brilliant when you come to a cross roads in your life and are uncertain in which direction to go next.... the help out there is endless and all as an alternative treatment without relying on medication or drugs of any sort. Alternative Therapists never label, or give you a diagnosis as usually the issue is never the issue. You may come and say ‘I am stressed and not sleeping’. The underlying problem may be something completely different. Some clients put themselves in the category depression or bipolar, but have no real medical diagnosis but have given themselves this label. Please don't label yourself, get help, slowly by

talking through your symptoms and starting the journey correctly - you can firstly try to resolve any issues without medication.

We truly need to stop expecting too much from ourselves and life, life is not perfect for anyone all the time, give ourselves time to breathe, meditation is amazing for this and give ourselves a pat on the back at the end of each day. The day begins each day in your mind and ends each day with your mind so please be kind to your mind, look after your mindset and treat it with total respect and love. If you find you are struggling with any Mental Health Issues at all, anything mentioned above or different or would just like a healthy mental clear out call Changes on 608829557. All clients are treated with the care and total confidentiality at all times.

Best exercises to do in later decades of your life Fitness levels diverge dramatically for men and women once they reach their 50s, as the menopause prompts a dramatic drop in female oestrogen levels, causing muscles to shrink and skin to sag. But there's a simple way to slow the effects of ageing - if you follow the right exercise routine. IN YOUR 40s The 40s are the danger zone when most people start to gain considerable weight, making it the perfect decade to incorporate high intensity resistance training into your schedule, which has been proven to burn fat for up to 38 hours post workout. In your 40s, you should still be running between three and five kilometres in 30 minutes, deadlifting half your

bodyweight and climbing multiple flights of stairs without much difficulty. IN YOUR 50s Fitness begins to diverge according to gender over the course of the 50s, with men more likely to retain greater strength and stamina than women as oestrogen sharply declines during the menopause. Strength training and regular cardio are essential to stave off stiffness and joint problems like arthritis. This is the decade where aches and pains start to crop up. You should be doing strength training twice a week to maintain your muscle mass. Compound exercises, which use multiple muscle groups at the same time to perform a movement, are women's best antidote to age-related weight gain and muscle wastage.

In your 50s, men should be able to do 15-19 push ups and 20-24 sit ups, while women should be able to do between seven and 10 push ups and 1519 sit ups. IN YOUR 60s and 70s Keeping active from the age of 60 on is essential to decrease the likelihood of chronic disease. You still should be working on your strength and flexibility at least twice a week. Pilates, yoga, swimming, aqua aerobics and dancing are all great forms of low impact exercise to keep you strong and supple as you mature. From your 60s onward, men should be able to perform 10-14 push ups and 15-19 sit ups, while women should be able to do between five and 10 push ups and 10-14 sit ups.

The Importance of Seat Belts Seat belts save lives, it is a simple message, but they are only effective if we use them correctly, they are useless as not wearing one at all. The wearing of seat belts can reduce the risk of injury during a car crash. When used properly, they provide drivers and passengers with increased protection. However, when used improperly, their ability to provide this safety is compromised. Proper seat belt adjustments are necessary to allow the restraints to work effectively. Wear a diagonal belt across the upper chest. Vehicle occupants sometimes complain that this strap is uncomfortable, and they sometimes slip this behind their backs or under the arm. However, when you do this, the belt's ability to protect you from injury is decreased. Seat belts are designed to distribute force upon two areas of the body. Without this diagonal strap in place, this is impossible. When you put your seat belt on you should make sure that it fits snugly to the body at the front, diagonally across the chest, and the waist, gently pulling the straps to make the necessary adjustments. Although padded seat belt covers can make the wearing of the belt feel more comfortable, they can also reduce the effectiveness, which is also the case for padded clothing such as coats, and so these should be avoided. The seat belt needs to make as close a contact with your body at the key protection areas as possible. In a vehicle, every occupant must wear a seat belt. If a car only has two seat belts

fitted at the back seats, then it can only carry two people. Rear seats where three seat belts are fitted are the only acceptable way in which three passengers can be carried. Children under 135cm in height are not allowed in the front seats, and even when in the back must wear an approved restraint suitable to their height and weight. It is not about the age of the child but their height and weight. Check your seat belts. You should perform regular checks on all the seat belts in your vehicle. Ensure that they fasten securely and that they can also be released when the button is pressed. Pull the seat belts to check that they lock in the event of force being applied, this way you can be sure that they will work if they are needed. These checks form part of the ITV inspection and are to ensure the maximum safety for vehicle occupants. Seat belts save lives.

Trailers fall into two distinctive categories when it comes to classifying them for normal use on the roads of Spain, those below 750kg and those above 750kg maximum weight. A small trailer, or “RemolqueLigero”, which has a maximum weight less than 750kg does not have to be registered. You must however clearly display the number plate of the vehicle towing the trailer on the rear, which must also be a certified style of number plate and the trailer must have lights fitted which repeat the actions displayed by the towing vehicle. A larger trailer, which also includes caravans, with a maximum weight over 750kg kilograms, the “RemolquePesado”, is a different altogether. Firstly, it has to be registered as a separate vehicle and must have its own “Permiso de Circulación”, or log book. It must also have its own registration plate, which is red in colour, and this must be displayed on the rear of the vehicle, along with the number plate of the vehicle towing it. This type of trailer is also requires insurance and is subject to mandatory testing, and the ITV documents must also be carried with the vehicle. It must also display lights on the rear that repeat what the towing vehicle is doing. There are a couple of points to remember when towing a trailer. Your view of the road must not be obscured, which includes the view in your mirrors. All number plates must be of an officially recognised and certified form, handwritten numbers on cardboard for example are not permitted. If you are towing any form of trailer, you must also carry a fire extinguisher with you in the vehicle. Towing another car is not permitted in Spain, and that includes by a socalled A-frame. That is why you must call a “grua” in the event of a breakdown. The grua will then recover your vehicle. The only way to tow another vehicle like a car is for it to be on the back of an approved trailer.

TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

To be fair, the biggest challenger to Liverpool being the thing we remember from this season so far is VAR. As every week goes past, some of us marvel at Liverpool’s dominance and then on the flip side stare openmouthed at the incompetence of a bunch of qualified referees unable to see the clear and obvious when they get to watch it back 30 times. If VAR was a Premier League manager, it would have been fired with a healthy pay-off in the middle of November. If, somehow, it had managed to cling on to its job until this weekend - well, what we saw on this matchday has even the most loyal fans in the stand agreeing it’s time for a change. In the world of American sitcoms, when a series has started to go on too

far and has become a parody of itself they call it ‘jumping the shark’ making reference to the scene in Happy Days when it became clear the show needed to be put out of its misery. On Saturday, at Stockley Park, the VAR on duty Davie Coote didn’t so much jump the shark as attach rockets to his heels and apply the proverbial football cliche, ‘over the moon’. When Giovani Lo Celso left a personal tackle-tattoo on the shin of Cesar Azpilicueta, it was bad enough Michael Oliver didn’t see it. It wasn’t ideal that his assistant didn’t see it. Jose Mourinho suffered the Arsene Wenger strain of selective blindness but none of this would matter because VAR would get it right. Yeah, about that - I don’t buy into the ‘well at least they admitted they were wrong’ line that is being peddled. This isn’t Grandad apologising to Nan because he was late home from the pub for Sunday lunch. Laughably, mainly because neither team really plays like Champions League contenders, the outcome of this match could have a bit to do with where the respective teams finish - and Chelsea not being brilliant at keeping the ball out of their own net might have felt more comfortable if Spurs had to play half-an-hour or so with ten men. In effect, it was as if VAR went and VARed their own decision - reviewing the review. Shambles springs to mind. Frank Lampard will have taken a huge sigh of relief in some ways, because the post-match narrative of the VAR shambles meant everyone forgot to ask the most obvious of questions - ‘Frank, could you explain why you’ve ignored the World Cupwinning goalscorer all season?’ Olivier Giroud’s cameo against United on Monday got him in the starting XI at the Bridge and, of course, he scored. As did Marcos Alonso, another player that Lamps would rather not rely on. The main creator? Ross Barkley, another who Lampard would leave on the bench given the chance. All three did what was needed to mean Frank became the first manager to beat Jose twice in the

same Premier League season. As for Mourinho, don’t forget it is not his fault. And if you are in danger of forgetting that fact, he’ll remind you pretty quickly. He doesn’t have any strikers. He’s going into battles with a gun that has no bullets. His players are tired. Yes, Jose - probably tired of you suggesting you are a changed man and then acting completely to the contrary. Mourinho isn’t so much known for parking the bus anymore - given Tottenham’s defence record. He’s more likely to throw his players under the bus. If Spurs fans get really lucky, they might get an inkling of what Mourinho is trying to craft this team into by the end of the season. I’m sticking a tenner on a Europa League qualifying group of unhappy individuals. Of course, that would be the main VAR story of the weekend. Erm, about that. Personally, I’d have subbed Mr Coote after his performance in the early kickoff but no, he was allowed to VAR on in the evening game at the King Power. Nobody, even Brentan, is disputing that City’s penalty was a penalty. Not that it mattered, everyone knew they’d miss it. I think what people are more interested in understanding is why the City one was correctly given, but Kevin de Bruyne protecting his boyish looks went unpunished? And that’s before we get into the age-old conversation around why goalkeepers are allowed to commit assault in their penalty area but the minute a strong wind goes near them it is a free-kick the other way? Had Ederson clattered into Kelechi Iheanacho in such a manner outside the box there is no doubt he’d have been penalised and, probably, sent off. But in the 18-yard box? Do what you want, fella - see if you can nick his Rolex whilst you’re at it. Amazingly, Rodgers seemed to have forgotten the incident come the postmatch chat with MotD and Gary Lineker didn’t bring it up either. Madness. Either way, Peppy G was determined that this performance was yet another example of his players’ having an amazing mentality - being able to beat a Leicester team with two wins in nine 1-

0 shows that everyone is still completely committed to the City cause and not in it just for the money. Which, apparently, is why they will all be sticking around no matter the FFP outcome. Methinks Mr Guardiola might have been told the club’s appeal is pretty strong to be so public about his intentions. If you think the VAR stuff is over for today, think again - we’re about to start pondering where a shoulder ends and an arm begins. And if you know, can you put Eddie Howe out of his misery? Bournemouth looked like they should have been 1-0 up at Burnley before VAR ruled that Peter Billing has very small shoulders so the ball definitely clipped his arm. And if that wasn’t enough, having gone up the other end on a classic counter and equalised, Bournemouth saw their goal chalked off and a penalty given against them in another case of shouldergate. That’s the kind of stuff that gets a side relegated. Aston Villa were ‘embarrassing’ according to life-long fan Dean Smith and not many would disagree. I think the only person allegedly disagreeing with Dean Smith on Saturday was John Terry, according to the rumours. Southampton scored courtesy of Shane Long’s, um, midriff and it’s fair to say nothing else sums up the desperation of impending relegation than watching a 37-year-old goalkeeper jog back to his own goal having gone up for a corner. Southampton cleared said corner and scored, Pepe Reina just about making the halfway line before calling it a day. With Christian Benteke and Joelinton both starting, not many were expecting a goalfest at Selhurst Park. Martin Dubravka was his normal self - making some excellent saves before costing his side the match by taking a step the wrong way and encouraging Patrick van Aarnholt to curl home the winning freekick. Newcastle are suddenly in danger luckily for them Norwich, Bournemouth and Villa are more stuffed than they are. Could the Man City news be the worst thing that happened to Sheffield United? Suddenly there is added expectation at Bramall Lane. This season could end up with Champions League football at the end of it. Chris Wilder brought some realism to everything by openly celebrating the fact that his side

now have 40 points. But with Spurs being so, so bad the 1-1 draw against Brighton feels like a bit of a missed opportunity. Manchester United’s social media account took great delight in telling the world how good Bruno Fernandes is after the Portuguese put in a decent performance against relegationthreatened Watford. Yes, that’s right - the self-proclaimed ‘biggest club in the world’ need to use Twitter to suggest that a player they spent over £50m on is good following one match against a side who might still go down. Times have changed, no? You can just imagine Roy Keane’s eyes when he gets told about this. United beat Watford 3-0 and Fernandes scored from the spot before setting up Mason Greenwood late on for the third. Yes, he laid on an assist against a team already losing 2-0. What a buy that lad is. Any hope that Arsenal were starting to look a little more secure at the back were shot in the head after a single minute against Everton. Dominic Calvert-Lewin put his foot where David Luiz’s head was far too scared to go and put the Toffees ahead. But, in a period of surprising character from Mikel Arteta’s side, they found themselves winning 2-1 thanks in the main to a wonderful cross from young Sako and a clever little finish from another youth team product in Eddie Nketiah. Character doesn’t last long at the Emirates though, as Bernd Leno suffered a severe case of the Luiz’s and bottled the chance to stop Richarlison levelling it - you know what Ederson would have done. Arteta’s half-time team talk must have been pretty simple - just go and do what Everton did. And Yo-Pierre scored 20 seconds into the second half. Job, as they say, done. Some teams use playing twice a week as an excuse for poor performance Nuno’s Wolves seem to relish it as they followed up Thursday’s 4-0 spanking of Espanyol with a 3-0 beating of Norwich. Diogo Jota got another brace, increasing the chances that Man United will be linked to him very soon.

SMGS at Altorreal. February 19th, 2020 Thirty-six members and three guests made their way to Altorreal golf course, north of Murcia city, to play in the third round of this year’s President’s Trophy. Rain during the night and early hours of the morning had left the course quite damp. Skies remained grey and threatening, although no drops fell, for the whole of the morning and early afternoon, the sun only coming out as players made their way off the course to the bar and terrace and it’s stunning views. Most members really like the Altorreal layout, with it being voted 7th favourite in a poll recently conducted amongst members, but you are never quite sure in what state you will find it outside of the late spring/early summer months when it is always in good condition. The aforementioned rain had slowed the greens, very much abetted by them

appearing to have not been cut. A number of them were also patchy due to suffering a grass infection and dieback. Scoring is never generally high at the course, and it was again the case. There is usually one stand-out return and this time it was Chris Wren who, having played an almost exemplary round, came in with 40 points. Frequent recent winner Kyrre Skarsmoen, Barry Roehrig and Jim Imrie also showed how it is done with 37 point returns beating their handicaps. Following this third round, and with two to go, the President’s Trophy is led by Ivan Hanak, with Kyrre Skarsmoen and Phil de Lacy 2nd and 3rd respectively. The day’s winning results were the following: Bronze Category: 4th Mick Seymour (33 on CB), 3rd Mike Jordan (33 on CB), 2nd Dave Bishop (35 on CB) and 1st Norman

Padmore, also with 35 points. Silver Category: 4th Brian Mulligan (33 on CB), 3rd Alan MacDonald (36), 2nd Kyrre Skarsmoen (37) and 1st Chris Wren Gold; Barry, Tony, Jim & Colin with the day’s stand out round of 40 Abacus (sponsored by Gordon Wilson and Ron Stenhouse): John Rose. points. Oh dear, what can the matter be? Elche CF are 3 games without a win! Before the winter transfer window the team were on a winning roll and managed to manoeuvre themselves into a play off position. By some miracle they are still in the play off position, despite gaining just 1 point from the last 3 games! At the moment it seems that the changes made during the winter transfer window have not been good ones and created an unsettled, uncomfortable, unnerved and underperforming team. This weekend saw Elche CF fly south to Tenerife for their 18:15 kick off. They were no doubt a little apprehensive, as the statistics did not bode well. Elche CF have been 33 years without a win at the Heliodoro Rodrigues Lopez, the home stadium of CD Tenerife. The Tenerife Carnival Queen welcomed the players onto the pitch, but her presence did not flow through to the game which was without sparkle and atmosphere.

unchallenged towards the goal, only to put it just wide. Missing what was to be Elche's only real chance of the game. Just minutes later Tenerife scored from a corner. The ball found the head of Tenerife #3 Alex Munoz, who put it forward to the feet of undefended Dani Gomez #9. Dani smashed it past

V Edgar #13 to take the lead. Elche defence immediately called for Off Side, but VAR agreed with the referrer and the goal stood. Tenerife had a second opportunity, but Edgar#13 saved the shot by Nahuel #12, the Argentine who has played for Spain U19 and U21's. The second half was much the

same, but with no more goals. Tenerife dominated and the Elche players underperformed. Elche CF's woes did not finish with 0 points. They have been caught up in the flight chaos caused by the Calima wind blanketing the Islands in sand, forcing them along with many other people to spend extra days in Tenerife. The team´s stay has been extended by 3 days, they are due to arrive into Alicante airport on Tuesday at 15:30. Join the EuroTourGuide Coach Tour for the next Elche CF home match against Numancia on Sunday the 1st March 2020. This was our second visit to Alicante this year and it was as if we hadn’t been away with the usual organised set up, the course was in fair condition but some of the tee boxes and greens looked a bit tired, this let the course down especially when playing in high season! The weather was perfect for golf especially when the sun got to work.

Golfer” Steve Day with 35 points, runner up in group B on count back beating Alan Boyden was “The Joker” Mick Billins with 34 points. All six nearest the pins were won, holes 6,15 and 17 “The Wine Collector” Brian Court, hole 3 “The Lonely Trucker” Andy Godfrey, hole 8 “Five Wood” Chris Houghton and hole 12 “The Joker” Mick Billins.

The format was full handicap Stableford; we split into two groups, A and B with a winner from each group, one being the overall winner.

We would like to thank The Vegetable Garden for sponsoring the day along with IGS and Antonio, Norma and staff at Imanyo’s Bar for the good food and great hospitality.

The winner of the Captains Cup was “Mr Twelve Trees” Steve Ayre from group A with a score of 37 points, runner up in group A on count back beating “The Lonely Trucker“ Andy Godfrey was “Five Wood” Chris Houghton with 35 points. Winner from group B was “Have A Go

The football card was won by Alex Porteous with Liverpool winning €40, and making £40 for this year’s charities.
