240 suspected Coronavirus cases rejected Health officials in the Valencian Community have rejected 240 suspected cases of Coronavirus (Covid19) while the confirmed cases in the region (15 at the time of going to print) are all said to be mild. Spain as a whole has 115 confirmed cases including four new confirmed cases announced on

Monday in Cataluña and Castilla-La Mancha. The Alicante province (as this week’s edition of the Costa Blanca People went to print) currently does not have any confirmed cases and the emergency hotline established by the Ministry of

Health to handle calls from concerned residents has handled around 2100 enquiries. It has been a full week since the first confirmed case of coronavirus was detected in the Valencian community last Tuesday. Currently 15 people in the Valencian region have the virus, several of them remain in isolation in their own homes and some in hospitals around the region. None, currently, in the Alicante province. According to Department of Health all of those currently confirmed as having the virus are displaying mild symptoms and 240 additional people tested have been found not to have the virus. The health department has set up a helpline - 900 300 555 – for all of those who may have travelled to high risk areas and have concerns since returning to Spain. The hotline has handled over 2000 calls and officials say that more

than half of these have been inquiries from people wanting general information. A smaller portion of the calls have been consultations from people displaying potentially worrying symptoms and who needed reassurance on next steps. A website, www.san.gva.es/coronavirus has also been established with the latest up to date news on the spread of the virus. Valencia’s Minister of Health, Ana Barceló, participated on Sunday in a Continued on page 11

BITE SIZE Sinking boat rescued: NEWS: 3 tonnes of drugs Torrevieja is set to pay tribute to its retired teachers in a special concert which takes place on March 5th at 7pm in the Municipal Theatre. The event was announced by Councillor for Education Ricardo Recuero who revealed that free tickets for the event can be collected from the Department of Education (Calle Maldonado, 5) from 8.30am until 2pm all this week. Organisers will pay an emotional tribute to a number of retired teachers in the town, who have had such an important impact on the education of generations of children. Videos of the teachers themselves, and of the individual schools, will be screened before a musical performance draws the show to a close.

discovered on board A sinking boat, towed into Torrevieja harbour, was carrying three tonnes of drugs stashed inside the vessel. The boat sank off the coast at Cabo de Palos and was semi submerged when two crewmembers were rescued in good health. As the boat was towed ashore, the Guardia Civil were waiting to carry out an inspection of the boat and discovered a huge drugs haul on board. The drug laden boat was discovered to be carrying 3160kg of hash, bundled into a number of hessian wrapped bales. The bottom of the boat was found to be packed with bales of drugs, concealed in the belly of the vessel. By midnight on Friday, just hours after the vessel was towed ashore, officers had already extracted around 50 bales of hash weighing around 35kg each. The operation to remove the

contraband from the boat, and to ensure the safety of those carrying out the rescue, was a joint effort involving the Guardia Civil, the Fishermen’s Association of Torrevieja and local firefighters who were on hand to support the work of the Guardia Civil. The distress call was first put out by the two crew members on Friday night. The Mimosa lifeboat, earlier that day involved in searching for the remains of the recently deceased military pilot killed in La Manga, went in search of the troubled vessel with assistance from the Helimer 211 rescue chopper from Valencia and a Red Cross rescue boat. The rescue operation soon became more complex as, following the discovery of the drugs, once the crew was made safe rescuers decided to tow the boat to Torrevieja to be inspected there by Guardia Civil.

VAT changes revealed Women’s Awards The winners of the 2020 womens awards, which mark the celebration of International Women’s Day, have been announced. The prizes will be awarded at a special gala show set to take place on March 8th at the Municipal Theatre. Mª Continued on page 5

The rate of VAT may be set to go down on sanitary items and vet services, that’s according to Podemos’ Txema Guijarro who made the claims during a debate in the Plenary Session of the Government on the new path of budgetary stability and the limit of non-financial expenditure ('expenditure ceiling'), a prelude to the General Budgets of the State (PGE) for 2020. Podemos also announced it wanted to raise VAT on tobacco products and betting while prices of feminine hygiene products and veterinary items will go

down as the VAT rate is reduced. However, the Treasury Department claimed that a VAT raise on tobacco products would not be possible as 21% is already the maximum allowed. The deputy of Podemos Txema Guijarro announced that among the details of the tax reform agreed between the PSOE and Podemos Unidos, we will see a drop for feminine hygiene products and veterinary services. VAT on period products will fall from 10% to 4% and on veterinary services from 21% to 10%.

Handcleaned beaches in Guardamar Guardamar del Segura council began cleaning 7km of the town’s beaches by hand from Sunday (1st March). The town’s well-known nudist resort at Los Tusales is included, along with Los Viveros and Les Ortigues beaches. The importance of the task was stressed by councillor Mari Carmen Aguilera, who said: “Our beaches are among the most important in the entire Mediterranean.” Initially, five staff will maintain the beaches’ natural profile by removing man-made waste by hand, leaving natural elements such as vegetation, algae and stones. Efforts will focus on

seven of the 11 kilometres of sand, with a further eight labourers joining the team on 16th May. According to Ms Aguilera, the areas are considered, “virgin and natural beaches that make Guardamar a showcase in the Mediterranean, and an example that the conservation of natural heritage is perfectly compatible with sun and beach tourism.” Clearing the beaches manually, instead of using mechanical means, has a more positive impact on the environment due to the selective nature of waste removal and value for money.

International Women’s Day celebration A coffee morning to celebrate International Women’s Day is to be held on Monday 9th March between 11am and 1pm at the Drop in Centre at Lomas de Cabo Roig, which houses event hosts Orihuela Costa Community Care Association. Visitors will be able to enjoy coffee, tea, cakes and biscuits and there will be a Tai Chi demonstration at 11.30am alongside an art exhibition and card making crafts.IWD 2020, officially Sunday 8th March, has a number of objectives to help forge a gender equal world. Celebrating women's achievements and increasing visibility, while calling out inequality, is a key driver of International Women’s Day. Collective action and shared ownership for driving

gender parity is what makes International Women's Day successful. Gloria Steinem, world-renowned feminist, journalist and activist once explained "The story of women's struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist nor to any one organisation but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights." Everyone including anyone with a long term condition or special needs is entitled to join the Community Care Association – which has the motto “We Believe You Matter”. Should you decide to become a Member, you will be joining a group of residents who want to meet at a Drop in Centre to socialise, support each other and have fun in the sun

Pilar pioneers rubbish collection program Pilar de la Horadada council has chosen the neighbourhood of San Isidro to pilot a door-to-door rubbish collection scheme. Local Councillor for the Environment, Pedro Miguel Moya, said that the scheme will start in March with residents leaving rubbish out in designated bins, four times a week. The Integrated Waste Plan (PIR) was approved in April 2019 by the regional council of Valenciana, which forms the first part of a whole new management model, striving towards a “zero-waste” community. Moya explained he wants ‘to reduce waste at source and prepare the rest for quality recycling’. He also thanked the residents of the neighbourhood in question, ‘who are going to be pioneers of door to door collection at regional level’. Different days of the week represent the collection of different kinds of waste, such as paper, glass, organic material etc. At a meeting with local residents, Councillor for Public Services, Adrián López, distributed specially-produced guides and leaflets for residents, advising them what to throw out, and when. The move will have a positive visual affect on the town, as well as an environmental one as street dumpsters will vanish, improving the aesthetic look of streets as tourist season approaches.

Repairs to start on beachfront The Councillor for the Environment, Dámaso Aparicio, as announced that repair and maintenance works are underway on the pedestrian path of which runs next to the micro-reserve of La Glea beach, Aguamarina in Orihuela Costa. Some of the works will be carried out in order to preserve the safety of the public following the huge amount of damage this area sustained during September’s DANA and storm Gloria. At present, the pedestrian path is in a terrible state, the wooden steps are either missing or loose, fence posts have been destroyed, informative signs have been torn from their location, there is considerable damage to the pavin and safety guide ropes are detached. There

are also environmental issues that need to be addressed such as the invasion of weeds, wasps nests and the general overgrown nature of the area. Councillor Dámaso Aparicio, said: "The repairing of this micro-reserve has been a neighbourhood demand for a long time and finally the issues will be resolved through these works, which we hope to completed as soon as possible." He explained that the project will be carried out in coordination with technicians from the Ministry of Environment. The budget for these works is approximately 30,000 euros, which will allow for the complete maintenance and repair of damage caused by flooding to the surroundings of the Punta La Glea pedestrian path.

BITE SIZE Community president arrested for stealing TVs NEWS: Continued from page 3

Teresa Sáez Gómez, maanger of El Rojo restaurant wins the award for women in business. Maria Teresa continued running the business after the death of her husband, a popular local musician. Organisers said that the award is given in recognition of a lifetime of personal and professional input into the town. The women’s equality award this year goes to Encarna Rebollo Murcia, Local Police officer. Encarna was one of the first female police officers in Torrevieja, at a time when the vast majority of the workforce was composed of men.

Lifesaving competition 500 swimmers competed in Torrevieja at the weekend for the 34th Lifesaving and Lifeguard national championships. The event was presided over by the Councillor for Sport, Diana Box Alonso, and had the participation of 75 clubs from all over Spain who competed in a series of simulated rescue events over three days from Friday through until Sunday.

Proyecto Mastral celebrates big birthday It is hard to believe that a local weather news service would grow in popularity to such a degree but the passion and dedication of the team behind popular Facebook page and website, Proyecto Mastral, have made it a firm favourite among Torrevieja residents and visitors of all nationalities. The Facebook page regularly features stunning weather themed photographs of the local area and the team are a ‘go to’ service for up to date information about weather phenomenon – in fact, their services came to be relied on during last year’s floods and again in January when the area suffered severe weather conditions which closed schools. Proyecto Mastral is set to celebrate its 10th anniversary and as such, is hosting a competition in collaboration with the town hall’s education department, and Agamed. Children and youngsters from all local schools are invited to submit a short story, drawing or photograph themed around ‘The Weather and Climate in Torrevieja. Climate Change’. The aim of the contest is to promote environmental education. The short story can be submitted in any of four languages – Spanish, Valencian, English and French. The photo contest is open to children over 14 and who use the Instagram platform. At the press conference to launch the competition, Torrevieja’s Councilor for Education Ricardo Recuero also announced that the town hall will shortly present a collaboration agreement between the Department and Proyecto Mastral to teach meteorology courses in schools. More information on how to enter the competition is available on www.eltiempoentorrevieja.es and the closing date is May 15th.

The president of a community of owners in the Alicante area has been arrested for stealing two television sets from a nearby resident. The defendant had a copy of the key of the victim’s house, due to recent problems the homeowner had with damp. National police arrested the 45 year old Spanish national for having stolen the two televisions, on two different occasions. According to the police report, the injured party said that twice when he was out of the country, when he returned home, television was no longer where it should be. The last time, he had just bought a new 65-inch television. In addition the door of the house was closed well and there were no signs of forced entry. When the officers interviewed the victim, he recalled that some time ago he had left a copy of the key to his home to the president of the community of residents, since he had humidity

problems at home. When the first TV had disappeared, the president allegedly claimed it had been broken during repairs to the property and that its replacement would be paid for by community funds, which never happened. After an investigation and after obtaining the necessary evidence, officers arrested the alleged perpetrator, who apparently had sold the second television for cash.

Life expectancy in Spain rises Life expectancy in Spain rose by 1.17 years on average in the last decade, according to the ministry of health and the National Institute of Statistics (INE). Both organisations are researching the effects of the financial crisis on how long people live – a period of recession and relative poverty lasting from approximately late 2008 until around 2013. Data show that the highest life expectancy increase was in the Spanish-owned cityprovince of Ceuta on the northern Moroccan coast, directly opposite Gibraltar, rising by two years and three months from the start of the last decade – but, curiously, its nearneighbour Melilla, a Spanish enclave immediately south of Almería and close to the Algerian border, was the only region in Spain where life expectancy fell in that time, by 0.67 years. The Balearic Islands saw the second-highest rise, by 1.55 years, with the greatest leap seen on the mainland being in Asturias, where inhabitants now live 1.45 years longer, followed by Madrid (1.44).

It was, in fact, the capital and its wider region where the highest life expectancy was recorded in the most recent figures to date, in 2018 – it had risen to 84 years and just under 10 months, on average, across both genders, even though the difference is usually around three years with women's being the highest.

The land-locked northern region of Navarra was second with a life expectancy of 84 years and just over two months, followed by Castilla y León (83 years and 11 months), and the Basque Country, at 83 years and eight months. Women live on average to age 85 years and nearly 11 months, and men to 80 years and just under six months. Deaths from the main non-

accidental causes went down in number, although the most prevalent is still cancer – just under 1.39 deaths per 1,000 inhabitants, but down from 1.51 per 1,000 in 2010. Some of this is because advances in cancer research and more sophisticated treatment and diagnostic techniques mean survival rates are improving and cases are being detected early enough to cure. Heart conditions and strokes fell from 0.33 to 0.25 per 1,000, the second largest cause, whilst chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) fell from 0.177 to 0.149. Diabetes deaths reduced from 0.11 to 0.9 per 1,000. The two causes which have risen in prevalence – and in line with people living longer – are pneumonia and 'flu, which are rarely fatal except when complicated by pre-existing conditions or in small children or the elderly, and which rose from 0.082 to 0.099, and Alzheimer's or non-vascular dementia, rising from 0.113 to 0.12 per 1,000.

Blaze at ground floor house in Almoradí The house was cluttered with items and so the fire spread quickly and is believed to have spread from a chimney. The fire crew from Almoradí were called to the blaze on Friday and were able to put it out, but not before it had burned a good part of the ground-floor dwelling in the town centre. Firefighters rescued

five dogs that were inside the building, while their owner, despite being elderly was able to get out of the house unharmed. The incident occurred at 10.40am in a house located at the corner of Lope de Vega street and Juan XXIII. The origin of the fire could be a chimney of the house, although this is

something that is being investigated. All the rooms of the house, next to several garden terraces, were full of items which has caused the fire to spread rapidly and with greater intensity. The actions of the fire crew prevented the flames from affecting neighbouring houses.

Ryanair ‘greenest airline’ Kids stab Lidl's La Prairie 'clone' claim investigated Brit tourist face cream now in Spain Spain's consumer authorities are looking into Ryanair's claim that it is the 'lowestemission airline in Europe', amid concerns that this may be influencing planetconscious passengers in their choice of travel. The Spanish federation FACUAConsumers in Action, along with the ministry for consumer affairs is also looking into the issue. The low-cost Irish carrier may be forced to change its wording if it turns out that it cannot substantiate its claims to be the greenest. On Ryanair's corporate website, a monthly CO2 report is provided and it claims that its carbon dioxide emissions per passenger per kilometre are the lowest in the EU airline industry, based upon its having 'one of the youngest fleets' at an 'average of six years', and the 'highest passenger load factor' at 96 percent. In the last nine months emissions have

actually risen slightly, from 66g per passenger per kilometre in May and June of 2019, to 67g from July to November 2019 inclusive, and now 69g in December 2019 and January 2020. But FACUA argues that the metrics supplied are over a year old – from January 2019. These state a total number of kilometres flown of 13.475 billion, total passengers 10.8 million, total CO2 emissions at 935 kilo-tonnes, and 69g of CO2 per passenger per kilometre. FACUA has started its own research, beginning with requesting CO2 emissions data from the Spanish Air Security Agency (AESA) for each airline operating in the EU. The organisation says Ryanair's data does indeed show that its emissions were lower than the other airlines it mentions on its site – but that the airlines it compared itself with are 'a very limited number'.

for phone in Alicante A British tourist was stabbed, robbed and hospitalised by three children, who recorded the attack on their phones. The trio were detained by Nacional Policia in Sant Vicent de Raspeig, near Alicante, for the alleged stabbing and robbery. A statement released recently says the group stabbed the victim in the back with a pen-knife, whilst recording the attack on their mobile phones. The holiday-maker, as yet unnamed, was taking a morning stroll when he sensed he was being followed, so returned home as a precaution. The gang caught up with him and a struggle ensued, where he was attacked and robbed of his wallet and mobile. A passerby stopped to help, calling an ambulance straight away. The man suffered a collapsed lung and was operated on as soon as he reached hospital. A study of CCTV revealed the identity of the attackers, two of which were already known to Police. Matching clothing and the weapon used were found in subsequent house searches. The 16 and 17-year-olds arrested were charged with the crimes of robbery with violence, wounding and crime against moral integrity (as the attacked was filmed) and were presented to the Juvenile Prosecutor’s Office of Alicante.

A face cream costing €3.99 and containing the same anti-ageing properties as another retailed at €570 has just hit the shelves in branches of Lidl in Spain, after selling out in the UK, Germany and Portugal. Cellular Beauty is described as a 'clone' of La Prairie's Cellular Radiance, which sells at 142.5 times the price. Its main active ingredient is Myramaze, an extract from a shrub known as the 'plant of resurrection', which is able to survive extreme conditions of dehydration. Used in skin cream, it helps protect lipids from oxidation and retains moisture, meaning the skin is constantly repairing itself, even during the day – despite the fact most skin regeneration happens at night, during sleep. Lidl's version contains sun protection factor (SPF) 15, helping to filter out UV rays which cause ageing. Both the Lidl version and La Prairie's version promise firm, moisturised skin and to improve the appearance of lines and wrinkles. Despite this, British dermatologist Dr Andy Millward warns against comparing

two types of face cream purely on the basis of their main active ingredient, since these do not work in isolation – their true power is in the complete formula and how all the ingredients work together, plus the percentage of each. Also, packaging is important – the better the packaging, the better the cream retains its properties. Luxury brands invest more money and time in research, development, marketing and packaging, because they have a much larger budget to do so – meaning consumers are not merely paying for the name, says Dr Millward. But cheaper ones, such as supermarket own brands, are created off the back of this expensive research and development, meaning they do not have to plough the same immense resources into creating the product – they merely clone the original, or at least, follow broadly the same recipe. This said, Dr Millward does believe La Prairie's €570 price tag for its Cellular Radiance is 'over the top'.

Debra donation by Ladies Club The Tuesday Ladies Club in Urb. La Marina presented €1,000 to four local charities. €200 was donated to The Butterfly Children Charity, DEBRA which was presented to Mary Chambers on behalf of the charity. Mary updated the Ladies about the charity since she had last seen them and once again thanked the Tuesday Ladies Club for their generosity and continued support of the charity over the last 12 years.

Divas treads the boards DIVAs - Drama in the (Hondón) Valley Association - is a small, independent group of amateur drama actors, which is all set to perform its second play, the humorous "Thank You, Mr Dickens". The two scheduled performances on Friday 27th and Saturday 28th March will take place in the theatre in Hondón de los Frailes, starting at 7.45pm. Tickets, priced at just 5€, are available locally or by contacting the group at:

U3A annual general meeting Monday 24th was the day of the Torrevieja U3A AGM. The meeting proceeded reasonably well and the majority of the outgoing officers and committee were voted back in to serve for another term. Jill Edwards, who had served as Secretary for many years finally retired from the post and was presented with a basket of flowers by the president Peter Shaw as a token farewell gift. Although Jill will no longer be on the committee, she will still be a member of the group and will be around to help out if needed.

The play is set in old London town on Christmas eve and gives a light-hearted look at Victorian England as the ‘girls’ in the local Bawdy House are preparing to celebrate Christmas. Suddenly there is a knock on the door and a stranger appears...

Two arrested for cheating driving test Two young people, one from Callosa de Segura and the other from Redován, have been arrested for attempting to falsify an official document. The pair were preparing to take the driving theory test but one was using the ID card of the other. The incident took place on February 7th in the examination room of the Provincial Traffic Department of Torrevieja. Agents of the Traffic Research and Analysis Group (GIAT), belonging to the Traffic department of the Guardia Civil of Alicante, were supporting the supervision of the theoretical tests that were to be carried out that day. One of the exam candidates showed officers an ID, which raised suspicions. After this, officers also requested the young man’s NIE and found that the documents did not match, despite the similarity of facial features between both people.

Officers then identified, through fingerprints, the impersonator, a 21-yearold Algerian, a resident of Callosa del Segura, who is charged with falsifying in an official document. On the other hand, the Guardia Civil also investigated the real owner of the ID, a 22-year-old Moroccan, a resident of Redován, who has also been included in the police report as a collaborator in the crime. This is the second such case detected in the same exam centre so far this year. In addition, a total of 6 people have been caught, in the last 3 months alone, using high tech audio-visual systems (microcameras and ear pieces), to cheat during the driver theory tests, Officers were keen to stress that to illegally obtain a driver's license puts the “beneficiary” himself, as well as the rest of the road users, at serious risk, due to the corresponding lack of knowledge, in terms of road safety.

Six people in the last three months have been using tech to cheat the theory test

Arranging a funeral abroad can be complicated – here’s how to make it simple Find out why it’s worth preplanning your funeral as an expat so you can enjoy your life in the sun Arranging a funeral is a stressful experience, but when you’re navigating a foreign funeral system, it can be even more difficult. When the time comes, will your loved ones know how to arrange a funeral in Spain? The Spanish funeral system can catch many expats unaware. Traditionally, Spanish funerals happen as quickly as 24 to 48 hours after the person passes away. Funerals for expats can take longer, especially if friends and family want to fly out, but this delay could cost hundreds of Euros in extra mortuary expenses. In addition, it’s common for Funeral Directors in Spain to request either part or full payment upfront. Then there’s the language barrier to deal with, along with unfamiliar processes. That’s why it’s so helpful to plan ahead to make things a little easier. Make funeral arrangements simple

Whether you live in Spain the whole year round, or have a summer home here, a prepaid funeral plan lets you make everything simpler for your loved ones when the time comes. Avalon is the fastest growing provider of funeral plans in Europe. They’ve helped more than 70,000 customers across Spain, the Canaries, Portugal, Cyprus and the UK for over 25 years. Plus, they have been

costs and complications. “For peace of mind, especially for expatriates and their families, I would highly recommend Avalon’s services,” says Michael, whose mother and step-father had Avalon expat plans when they passed away. “On both occasions, the service we received was exemplary – they made what was such a stressful time in Spain so much easier.” Avalon plans are specially designed for British expats in Spain. An Avalon plan is valid in the UK and Spain, so you can choose to have a funeral in either country.

named the UK’s Best Funeral Plan Provider at the Personal Finance Awards. An Avalon plan lets you pay for your funeral in advance, either in a lump sum or affordable monthly payments, so that your loved ones don’t have to deal with unexpected

Continued from page 1 videoconference meeting of the Interterritorial Council of the National Health System, chaired by Spain’s Minister of Health, Salvador Illa, to analyze the situation and evolution of the coronavirus. Both central government and the autonomous communities have underlined the "essential collaboration and coordination" of all administrations in the management of the coronavirus in Spain. In the meeting, which has lasted for a little over two hours, it was unanimously agreed that Spain needs to strive to maintain the current scenario known as phase 1, that is, the containment phase. All of the new cases detected in Spain involve people who were infected abroad, and so far there are only three people believed to have acquired the virus locally. Fernando Simón, director of the Center for Coordination of Health Alerts and Emergencies, said that in some other countries, control has already been lost and measures are being taken to mitigate the impact of the virus such as the cancellation of public events. In Italy for example, sports events have been held behind closed doors and the Venice Carnival has been cancelled. France has announced the prohibition of

events in enclosures with more than 5,000 people. Ireland cancelled its forthcoming six nations clash with Italy and talks are in progress early this week to discuss the potential postponement of the St Patrick’s festival. While Spain is still in the containment phase, officials are considering implementing tougher measures as cases rise. To that end, on Monday a series of technical meetings were held in which specific measures were agreed and officials have not

ruled out a scenario in which large gatherings would be postponed. The World Health Organization (WHO) has raised its official global risk assessment to “very high.” “The scenario is evolving very rapidly, fundamentally in Italy and therefore also in Spain,” said Fernando Simón, head of the Coordination Centre for Health Alerts and Emergencies, which answers to the Health Ministry. Meanwhile, the message from health officials worldwide is that

continued and thorough handwashing is the best defence against the spread of viruses. While surgical masks are said to have little impact on the spread of the virus (only a military grade respirator is said to have enough impact, according to many experts) masks have sold out across the country and hand sanitizing gel is increasingly difficult to come by. However, thorough handwashing with soap and water remains the best defence. The mortality rate of Covid-19 is around 2% in the epicentre of the outbreak, China’s Hubei province, and less than that elsewhere. For comparison, seasonal flu typically has a mortality rate below 1% and is thought to cause about 400,000 deaths each year globally. Sars had a death rate of more than 10%. Another key unknown is how contagious the coronavirus is. A crucial difference is that unlike flu, there is no vaccine for the new coronavirus, which means it is more difficult for vulnerable members of the population – elderly people or those with existing respiratory or immune problems – to protect themselves. Hand-washing and avoiding other people if you feel unwell are important.

Local fundraiser Patricia Milligan held another charity event at Alannia, formerly Marjal campsite in Catral, raising €1105 for the Cruz Roja, or Red Cross. Entertainment was provided by Cherry K and Rebecca Holt. Patricia told the Costa Blanca People, “Thank you to everyone that came and made it a fun afternoon of dancing. Many of the Red Cross volunteers came to give their support and help with the raffle.”

GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP Sterling had a busy week, but the movements sometimes appeared counterintuitive. The week started in a familiar way when the UK’s Chief Negotiator David Frost reiterated the view that the UK may diverge from EU standards and put pressure on the pound as an indication that trade negotiations may be difficult to resolve. The pound fell an average of 0.3%, losing two fifths of a euro cent. However, when it came to the employment data, investors appeared to ignore the slowdown on wages growth and 0.5% quarterly fall in labour productivity. The pound made initial gains due to the positive numbers - 180k jobs added in Q4 2019, 3.8% unemployment rate and a record high 76.5% employment rate although it gave most of those gains back by the end of the day. The announcement of inflation data also had an impact on the pound, which moved lower despite inflation data coming in higher than expected. Headline CPI inflation accelerated from 1.3% to 1.8%, its highest level since July last year. After initial gains, sterling once again retreated as investors considered that in light of the data, higher interest rates from the Bank of England are unlikely in the

near future. It seems that investors have been unsettled for most of the week, and are anticipating disappointing provisional PMI results which could add further pressure. There was no significant news from Europe and the euro had a relatively quiet week. Once again, Germany was in focus as the economy stalled – GDP expanded by 0.3% but imports increased and exports decreased. Unsurprisingly, ZEW’s surveys of institutional investors in Germany and pan-Euroland found them less confident in February than a month earlier. In Germany, economic sentiment “decreased sharply in February, falling 18.0 points to 8.7”. For the euro zone as a whole the reading fell 15 points to 10.4 as the mood remains downbeat. The ZEW measures were the only ecostats of any consequence from Europe and they made investors disinclined to embrace the euro. It lost ground on almost every front, falling nearly half a cent against sterling. Investors are not expecting any surprises when the European Central Bank publishes a summary of its last monetary policy meeting, and in general the euro appears to be focussed on keeping afloat until the economy across Europe shows some improvement.

60 dogs found crammed in a Hondón home Officials found more than 60 dogs crammed into a house in Hondón de las Nieves this week. Neighbouring residents claim that in addition to the animals – which were both alive and dead – the house was full of rubbish. It is believed that the homeowner suffers from Diogenes Syndrome. Diogenes syndrome, also known as senile squalor syndrome, is a disorder characterized by extreme self-neglect, domestic squalor, social withdrawal, apathy, compulsive hoarding of garbage or animals. A variety of groups and associations, with the help of the Hondón Local Police and a local veterinary clinic, entered the property this week in order to rescue the dogs that were inside the house. One of the rescuers said that "we have not been able to get all the dogs but in total there will be about 60 animals." Inside the house it is possible that "there are still about 20 dogs left."

CostaBlancaPeople 3rd - 9th March 2020

Among the rescued animals were "puppies, adult dogs and pregnant females." The Alma animal rescue association was among the groups helping with the situation. They said, "we have room for about 20 animals, but we have taken many more” and that right

now "there are about 12 dogs in cages in cars and we don't have a space for them." The Alma association is appealing for urgent foster homes for these small dogs. There are still more dogs to be removed from the property. Of the dogs that have so far been caught, rescuers said: "At the moment they are being dewormed and vaccinated. They

are very good and they let themselves be caught, but they are very scared." They say that "it has been a long journey of several years to put an end to this unhealthy situation we sincerely hope that the woman will recover and live in better conditions from now on." A few weeks ago, the owner of the house collapsed at the market de Hondón de las Nieves and lost consciousness. Emergency services were called to the market and revived her, but witnesses claim the woman ran away and went back to her home. Two cleaning operatives with masks and protective suits are currently cleaning the house and removing all the rubbish that is accumulated inside. Neighbours say the problem has been going on for years. The elderly woman began to gather a number of dogs at home and in the yard surrounding the property and, little by little, began to accumulate garbage.

The Adventures Of Zafir (Mrs Grumpy) Torrevieja Albergue Animal Shelter Zafir came to the shelter early in 2019 when she was about 3 years old suffering from conjunctivitis and extreme stress. She was unhappy in the shelter and hated the other cats. She would spit and growl at cats and volunteers alike (with the exception of Inma), hence her nickname of Mrs

Grumpy. No-one visiting the shelter was interested in her until a few weeks ago when her new dad fell in love with her. She is now living on a boat and travelling the world. She arrived in Fuengirola a few weeks ago and now has a new life. Ultimate destination Brazil.

Neighbourhood Crime Watch The monthly meeting of Torrevieja West Neighbourhood Crime Watch & Residents at Casa Ventura on Monday welcomed Councillor Gitte Lund Thomsen who provided helpful and useful information on residents’ queries. Residents had raised concerns that some green areas had been neglected over the last few years and were overgrown. Cllr Thomsen assured the group that all green areas under council control would be maintained this year. Following last month’s complaints about the late arrival of mail, particularly from the UK, Cllr Thomsen has spoken

to the directors at Correos and reassurances have been given that postal deliveries should now be back to normal. Residents in streets where the paving was being damaged by tree roots were assured that this will be attended to . Nominations for President and Committee members were sought and will be discussed at the March 30th meeting. The meeting ended with the advice that residents should notify the president or Cllr Thomsen should they have any area issues and that the meeting on the 27th April will be attended by the British Vice Consul.

Who is Mrs Hinch? Mrs Hinch, also known as Sophie Hinchcliffe, has become an online cleaning sensation after sharing her cleaning hacks on Instagram (@mrshinchhome) and landed a book deal. But who is Mrs Hinch and what are the best Mrs Hinch cleaning tips and tricks? Sophie Hinchcliffe is a self-proclaimed ‘cleaning mad’ woman from Essex, whose passion for cleaning has gained her an army of fans who call themselves the Hinch Army, or Hinchers. 28-year-old Sophie’s top tips have gained her over 3.1 million followers on Instagram. Sophie’s pictures of her immaculate home complete with gleaming kitchen work tops, crumb-free floors and perfectly presented home accessories gain thousands of likes and comments. Her cleaning tips undoubtedly go viral and any product she endorses flies off the shelves. Here are some of her most popular tips.... Store pan lids upsidedown to make space in your kitchen cupboard Mrs Hinch has revealed a handy trick for storing pots and pans. Placing the pan lids upside down means you’ll be able to stack them up on top of each other – genius! Of the discovery, she said on her Instagram stories, “Someone messaged me and said, turn your saucepan lids upside down and then sit the pans on top of each other.” She added, “Everyone probably knew this, I didn’t.” Keep bed linen sets in a pillow case There’s nothing worse than wasting half and hour hunting in the linen closet for a matching bed set. Thankfully, Mrs Hinch has come to the rescue.

She shared a tip on her Instagram Stories, explaining how she groups all her linen sets together in the matching pillow case. She wrote, “Where do I keep my fresh bedding? I store the whole fresh bed set into the matching pillow case!” But that’s not the only linen hack Mrs Hinch has up her sleeve. She also revealed that – once she has finished ironing her duvet cover, pillow cases and fitted sheets – she then places Lenor’s tumble dryer sheets in with her clean bedding, to keep it fresh when it’s time to change them. Make sure your curtains look their best with this toilet roll trick We know what you’re thinking – how can toilet roll make my curtains look great? But bear with us! According to Mrs Hinch, empty toilet rolls can be brilliant for ensuring the pleats in your curtains are neat and uniform, and properly spaced out. All you need to do is start with at least ten empty toilet rolls. Then, cut them open down the length of the roll, so they’re easy to pop on and off your curtain rail. Then, simply place a roll between each curtain ring, to ensure the pleat falls nicely and neatly. Mrs Hinch says you can also cut the toilet rolls to size, depending on how big or small you want the gaps between pleats to be. It’s also recommended to tape the toilet rolls back up after hanging them, so that they don’t fall down when you draw the curtains at night, or open them in the morning. Get rid of stains on your mattress If you’ve got children who are a little accident prone in bed, or you’ve noticed some unfortunate sweat and/or dirt marks on your mattress accumulating

over the years, this is a tip worth noting. Mrs Hinch suggested on This Morning that you use bicarbonate powder on the stained areas of your mattress, sprinkling it on and rubbing it in with a rubber glove. Of course, remove all bedding first. Then, once the powder has been settled into the mattress for an hour, simple hoover it off, and voilà! A sparkling clean mattress with no stain. Mrs Hinch’s Zoflora tips Anyone who follows Sophie’s updates will know she is crazy about Zoflora. The budget disinfectant liquid is Sophie’s got-to-have product when it comes to most household chores, but she recently admitted she cannot go to bed without giving her sink a deep clean first. As part of the ritual, Sophie pours soda crystals down her plug before rinsing it with… you guessed it, Zoflora. Sophie then pours boiling water over the mixture to rinse out the plug. Sounds simple enough! Zoflora to keep your bin smelling clean This Mrs Hinch cleaning tip for your bin will keep it smelling fresh. After cleaning it with a disinfectant spray, Sophie douses a piece of kitchen roll in Zoflora, folds it up and leaves it at the bottom of her bin before inserting a bin bag. Genius! Fabric conditioner to clean doors Sophie surprised even the most clued-up cleaners earlier this week when she revealed she uses fabric conditioner to keep her doors clean. Sophie appeared on This Morning and revealed fabric conditioner mixed with water allows her to wipe down marks on doors without removing the paint. Who would have thought?!

Consular team holds outreach events in Alicante and Murcia On 17 and 18 March the British Consulate in Alicante is holding four separate outreach events to update UK nationals in Alicante and Murcia on what the UK’s departure from the EU means for them. Members of the consular and Embassy team will explain the citizens’ rights protections included in the Withdrawal Agreement and advise on any action you need to take during the transition period (to 31

December 2020). There will also be a Q&A section for you to ask questions on issues including residency, pensions and healthcare. British Consul Sarah-Jane Morris said: “The approval of the Withdrawal Agreement is a very important step for UK nationals living here. It provides reassurance on key rights, such as being able to continue to live and work here, and for pensioners to have lifelong healthcare and uprated

pensions. We will provide an update on the latest residency processes at our March events, but meanwhile be assured that if you already have the green registration certificate (A4 or credit card-sized) this will remain a valid residency document even after the transition period ends on 31 December this year. For further information visit the Living in Spain Guide on gov.uk and follow our Brits in Spain channel on Facebook”.

Nauplia

Nauplia or Nafplio is a seaport town in the Peloponnese in Greece that has expanded up the hillsides near the north end of the Argolic Gulf. The town was an important seaport held under a succession of royal houses in the Middle Ages as part of the lordship of Argos and Nauplia, held initially by the de la Roche following the Fourth Crusade before coming

under the Republic of Venice and, lastly, the Ottoman Empire. The town was the capital of the First Hellenic Republic and of the Kingdom of Greece, from the start of the Greek Revolution in 1821 until 1834. Name The name of the town changed several times over the centuries. The modern Greek name of the town is Nafplio (In modern English, the most frequently used forms are Nauplia and Navplion. During the Classical Antiquity, it was known as Nauplia in Attic Greek and Naupliē (Ναυπλίη) in Ionian Greek In Latin, it was called Nauplia. During the Middle Ages, several variants were used in Byzantine Greek, including Náfplion, Anáplion, and Anáplia. During the Late Middle Ages and early modern period, under Venetian domination, the town was known in Italian as Napoli di Romania, after the medieval usage of "Romania" to refer to the lands of the Byzantine Empire, and to distinguish it from Napoli in Italy. Also during the early modern period, but this time under Ottoman rule, the Turkish name of the town was Mora Yenişehir, after Morea, a medieval name for the Peloponnese, and "yeni şehir," the Turkish term for "new city" (apparently a translation from the Greek Νεάπολη, Italian Napoli). The Ottomans also called it Anabolı. In the 19th century and early 20th century, the town was called indiscriminately Náfplion and Nafplio in modern Greek. Both forms were used in official documents and

travel guides. This explains why the old form Náfplion still occasionally survives up to this day. Geography Nafplio is situated on the Argolic Gulf in the northeast Peloponnese. Most of the old town is on a peninsula jutting into the gulf; this peninsula forms a naturally protected bay that is enhanced by the addition of man-made moles. Originally almost isolated by marshes, deliberate landfill projects, primarily since the 1970s, have nearly doubled the land area of the city. History Tourism emerged slowly in the 1960s, but not to the same degree as some other Greek areas. Nevertheless, it tends to attract a number of tourists from Germany and the Scandinavian countries in particular. Nafplio enjoys a very sunny and mild climate, even by Greek standards, and as a consequence has become a popular day or weekend road-trip destination for Athenians in wintertime. Nafplio is a port, with fishing and transport ongoing, although the primary source of local employment currently is tourism, with two beaches on the other side of

the peninsula from the main body of the town and a large amount of local accommodation. The building of the National Bank of Greece is probably the only one in the world to have been built in the Mycenaean Revival architectural style. Architecture and urban sculpture Acronauplia is the oldest part of the city though a modern hotel has been built on it. Until the thirteenth century, it was a town on its own. The arrival of the Venetians and the Franks transformed it into part of the town fortifications. Other fortifications of the city include the Palamidi and Bourtzi, which is located in the middle of the harbour. Nafplio maintains a traditional architectural style with many traditional-style colourful buildings and houses, partly influenced by the Venetians, because of the domination of 1338-1540. Also, modern-era neoclassical buildings are also preserved, while the building of the National Bank of Greece is an example of Mycenaean Revival architecture. Around the city can be found several sculptures and statues. They are related mostly with the modern history of Nafplio, such as the statues of Ioannis Kapodistrias, Otto of Greece and Theodoros Kolokotronis.

I can't forget her

Worried about my grandson My daughter doesn’t seem to understand that wrapping her son up in cotton wool is not good for him. He is molly-coddled beyond belief. He is about to go to senior school, with limited social skills, without the means to stand up for himself or to be responsible. He doesn’t seem to be able to make decisions for himself. The school reports up to now say that he lacks confidence. I want to help, but don’t know how, because my views are unwelcome. Children raised in rigid environments can miss out on the chance to develop problem-solving skills because parents are making the decisions for them. It is even more common today for parents to want to try and protect their children. Teen-age is a time for change, and going to senior school may well help him gain confidence. School psychologists should pick up on any problems. See how he gets along for a few months. This problem may well sort itself out. Alternatively, the next time he has a birthday perhaps consider a present of some martial arts classes to boost confidence.

I left my wife for a woman I had met at work. All hell broke loose, my parents and my wife’s parents put so much pressure on me to return home, that out of guilt and weakness I did. I regret the decision totally. I love my girlfriend. I want to go back to her but she won’t take my calls or messages. She was devastated at the breakup and left work. What can I do? I feel my life is over. Have I blown it?

You were feeling guilty and weak and bowed to pressure from your family. You will have to tell your family that you tried, but made a big mistake. Your girlfriend has been hurt also, and irrespective of whether she will take you back you should move out and live alone. May be in time you can contact your girlfriend again as a single man, and pick up where you left off. Don’t telephone but write a sincere, handwritten letter explaining everything, and why you did what you did. Break-ups are never easy, but it does no good to live a lie.

WRITE TO SARA IN CONFIDENCE. A PSEUDONYM WILL BE USED IF YOU WISH. SARA READS ALL LETTERS AND CAN GIVE A PERSONAL REPLY. EMAIL YOUR QUESTION TO SARA@COSTABLANCAPEOPLE.COM OR SARA IS AVAILABLE FOR PRIVATE CONSULTATIONS, TELEPHONE 650 054 467.

EXPAT BRIEFINGS www.expatbriefings.com “Expert Financial Advice for Expats”

Departures from Valencia 2020 8 days, full board. Mediterranean cruise LIMITED CABINS!! MSC Fantasia is stylish and ecofriendly, balancing warmth and comfort with cutting-edge design. At its heart you’ll find a real stone piazza complete with an espresso bar serving freshly-baked pastries and authentic gelati, making it the perfect place to take a moment away from bargain hunting in the chic boutiques and dutyfree shop nearby. MARSEILLE Are you ready to find your way around Marseille on an MSC Mediterranean cruise? When cruising southern France, you have to know that Marseille is the most renowned and populated metropolitan area in the country after Paris and Lyon. When you alight from your MSC cruise ship, the cafés around the VieuxPort, where glistening fish are sold straight off the boats on quai des Belges, are wonderful spots to observe the city’s street life. Genoa Genoa is marvellously eclectic, vibrant and full of rough-edged style; it’s a great cruise

excursion. Indeed "La Superba" (The Superb), as it was known at the height of its authority as a Mediterranean superpower, boasts more zest and intrigue than all the surrounding coastal resorts put together. PALERMO Traditions, culture and cuisine in Trinacria A holiday to Italy with MSC Cruises is the perfect chance to visit the regional capital of Sicily. A filthy, bustling, noisy port, Palermo yet holds an unrivalled display of Norman art and architecture and Baroque churches, combined with a warren of medieval streets and markets. CIVITAVECCHIA/ROME Uncovering a thousand years of history The port of Civitavecchia is one of the largest in Italy and is, of course, a destination of MSC Cruises in the Mediterranean. Civitavecchia enjoys a millenary history due to its coves along the coast, which offered a perfect shelter for vessels, making it a natural port long before cruise ships sailed the seas, and in fact the port was known to the Romans as Centumcellae.

CAGLIARI The characteristic hills of the ancient village From an MSC ship on the Mediterranean Sea, the view of Cagliari, Sardinia’s capital and main port, is striking. Crowned by its historic nucleus squeezed within a protective ring of Pisan fortifications, Cagliari’s setting is enhanced by the calm lagoons to the east and west of the city, a habitat for cranes, cormorants and flamingos. PALMA DE MALLORCA Enjoy the year-long mild climate Palma is a vibrant place and a world away from the heaving tourist enclaves of the surrounding bay. MSC Cruises shore excursions can be a clever option to enjoy Palma. Finding your way around Palma is fairly straightforward once you’re in the city centre. The obvious landmark to see in Palma on your cruise holiday is the Catedral, which dominates the Mediterranean Sea waterfront and backs onto the oldest part of the city, a cluster of alleys and narrow lanes whose northern and eastern limits are marked by the zigzag of avenues built beside – or in place of – the city walls.

Buying and Brexit The certainty brought about by the Conservatives' majority election win in December has given many British home buyers and investors the confidence to proceed with purchasing a new property. This has stimulated the market both at home and abroad. Spain is already feeling the impact, with sales to British buyers surging by 125% over the course of December 2019 and January 2020, according to property developer Taylor Wimpey España. However, expert Spanish property lawyers Fuster & Associates report that many

buyers are still seeking advice on what to focus on when buying in the face of Brexit, indicating that there is more

potential to unlock when it comes to the Spanish market. David Fuster, Founding Partner, Fuster & Associates said, "There's no doubt that the resolution of the Brexit uncertainty and the UK's

subsequent departure from the EU has kick-started the British appetite for property overseas once more. We're seen that here in Spain and it's been mirrored in a number of other European holiday destinations. Many questions still remain though, with those buying during the transition period keen to do so in a manner that will protect their long-term interests." "The Spanish property market has performed strongly in recent years. In 2020, we expect to see plenty of interest from British buyers looking to snap up homes before the Brexit transition period ends."

If possible, have a friend take a look for you. If you have a friend you can trust, then let them give you their honest opinion. They know what you like and can tell you first hand, what condition the property is in. Will it need updating, or is it ready to move into?

A Yale study has found that women buy houses for 2% more than men, and sell them for 2% less. The gender pay gap has yet to close and the gender wealth gap is just as big a concern. According to the Boston Consulting Group, a consultancy, as recently as 2015 women held just 30% of all global private wealth. The Survey of Consumer Finances, a poll of American households conducted by the Federal Reserve, shows that among single 60-year-olds, men are about twice as rich as women. According to a recent study, some of this disparity can be explained by differences in how men and women buy and sell property. Using data on 9m housing transactions carried out in America between 1991 and 2017, Paul Goldsmith-Pinkham and Kelly Shue of the Yale School of Management found that, on average, single women pay about 2% more than their male counterparts for houses, and sell them for 2% less. Given that in the US (where the study was carried out) adults move house an average of 11 times during their lives, this disadvantage can mount up. The authors reckon that the typical single woman loses about $1,600 in housing wealth every year as a result. “Unfortunately, we see ourselves as pointing out a major issue that hasn’t been noticed before,” Shue says. “It was surprising to both me and Paul just how large this gender gap is.” Shue, a professor of finance, and Goldsmith-Pinkham, an assistant professor of finance, analyzed more than 50 million housing transactions from across the U.S. between 1991 and 2017.

For about 9 million transactions, it was possible to identify the gender of the participants. Compared to single men, they found, single women spend about 2% more when they buy a house, and when it is time to sell it, get a price 2% less. That translates to 1.5% less in annual returns. When the leverage created with a typical 20% down and 80% bank-financed mortgage is factored in, the gap is amplified to more than 7%. What should women homeowners know about the research? One important message is that the size of the gap depends on how long you stay in the house. “The gender gap primarily occurs at execution—purchase and sale,” Shue said. With the typical period for holding a home, 5 years, that’s significant. “However, if you hold onto the home for 10 years, you’re basically taking the loss and dividing it by 10, which means your annual return difference is going to be very small.” Negotiation is the next largest factor. In particular, the largest negotiated discounts off the listed price for homes occurs when there is a female buyer bargaining against a male seller. Bust, Shue warns, “There’s not a sharp delineation between market timing and negotiation. They likely overlap.” That’s because people who buy or sell even though it isn’t the most advantageous market have priorities other than returns on their investment. Perhaps they need to move for work or to fit school schedules. Those other priorities likely weaken bargaining power. The fact that women are losing out in the negotiation process

doesn’t necessarily mean that they are doing anything wrong, Shue points out; gender bias could be playing a role. She points to studies on car buying in which women and men use identical scripts in making an identical purchase, yet women don’t get the discounts offered to men. “There’s also research showing that if women become more aggressive in negotiations, they can actually be worse off because the other side reacts very negatively,” she says. Shue and Goldsmith-Pinkham also examined whether single men buy riskier properties and get compensated for that. “Maybe single men are more likely to buy fixer-uppers and that’s why they are earning a higher return,” Shue explains. “We very seriously considered whether they invest more in home maintenance.” While modest DIY work might not show clearly in the data, there was no evidence of greater levels of investment in maintenance or significant renovation by single men. Many aspects of this research merit further study, Shue says. “There are a lot of dollars on the line.” She adds, “Housing represents the largest category of household saving. It accounts for a greater fraction of total retirement savings than stock investment. Therefore, to lose any percentage on housing really impacts the gender gap in wealth accumulation.” “I don’t think people expected women to be doing so much worse in the housing market,” Shue notes. “I’d be curious to study whether, given this new information, that changes. I certainly plan to be more careful in future when buying a house.”

Writers' Ink Spot The weekly short story by Writers' Ink, a dedicated and rapidly expanding group of internationally published and non-published writers who take pleasure in helping and encouraging each other and members of our wider international circle. We meet on the second Monday of each month at 11am in the 'Friendly' Bar, CC Citrus, La Florida, Costa Blanca South. We are more than happy to welcome new budding writers, experienced published Authors or anyone who has an interest in writing to our group.

'The weather will be cold later today with occasional bursts of rain, temperatures falling to two degrees by this evening.' 'That's it,' Polly sighed, jumping out of the car and dashing through the rain to the front door. Inside, she turned up the heating, unbuttoned her coat, and flung it onto the back of the chair. 'We’re not going back out again tonight,' she said as Simon came in from parking the car and hung his dripping coat up in the hall. Polly was usually the one who was keen to go out, but tonight Simon really needed his wife to stay at home, wanting to get out of the house alone. He pulled what he hoped was a disappointed face. 'Oh, come on, Poll,' he said, pouting, can’t I persuade you? I was really looking forward to a night out,' Simon lied, knowing for certain that when Polly said no, she rarely changed her mind. 'Simon, the thought of trekking

through great puddles of rain in the freezing cold is not, by any means, my idea of a fun evening. Let's just stay in, snuggle in front of the fire, and watch a film.’ Staying home watching a film wasn’t Simon’s idea of a fun evening either, but he didn't want to rock the boat. Not tonight of all nights He listened to her rattling the mugs in the kitchen, heard the milk hiss in the pan and the chink of the teaspoon as it hit the sides of the cups. She would be trying to dissolve the inevitable clumps of cocoa that always seemed to float on the top of the milk. Polly had many endearing talents but making hot chocolate wasn’t one of them. She carried the cups and a plate of biscuits on a tray through to their sitting room and plonked it on the coffee table with a thump. He couldn't blame her for her mood. Not after last week’s news that their third attempt at IVF had failed. There could be no more chances, and when

HOPE by Maureen Reed Polly had been given the awful news, she was devastated. She tried to hide it, and in fact, did make quite a good attempt to disguise her mood, but Simon knew. He hadn't been married to her for five years for nothing. He saw the pain in her eyes each time she saw tiny fingers curled around pram blankets, and knew exactly what to expect afterwards. She had become moody and distant at times, and Simon felt it wasn’t something he could deal with for much longer. The film ended. He picked up the tray, and as he carried it into the kitchen, he called over his shoulder. 'Do you mind if I nip out Poll? I won't be long.’ 'What? In this storm? What for?' 'See a man about a dog,' he joked, knowing she wouldn’t want him to go but hoping, all the same, that she wasn't going to make it difficult for him. 'That translates as a pint at the pub then I suppose. Don't be long though, Simon. I thought we’d have an early night. He pecked her on the cheek before going out, trying to act as though everything was normal. But before getting into the car, Simon went into the shed at the side of the house. Groping around in the dark, he found the cardboard box that he had hidden there a few days earlier. As he put it in

the boot of his car, he wondered, not for the first time, if he was doing the right thing. Climbing into the driver’s seat, he punched a postcode into his sat-nav and started the engine. It didn't take him long to reach the woman’s house. All his secrecy and careful planning were about to come to an end, and he hoped he had made the right decision How was Polly going to take it though? That was the burning question. Afterwards, when he set off for home, he was troubled by afterthoughts. But it was too late to change things. He'd burned all his bridges. The deed was done. As he drove towards home, the weather seemed to take a turn for the worst. 'Typical, 'he thought. He didn't want to arrive home too late and have to face yet another barrage of tears greeting him as he walked through the door. He needed his wife to be at least in a receptive mood to accept what he had done. Heavy rain lashed against the windscreen making it almost impossible to see the road in the dark. The journey back seemed to take much longer than the journey there. It wasn’t helped by road works on the motorway causing a mile-long tailback. He could do without that right now.

It was after ten when Simon pulled the car onto the drive. He saw the sitting room light was on, which meant His wife was still up. As he turned the key in the lock, Polly darted into the hall before he even got the door fully open, her eyes wet with tears. 'Where have you been, Simon? You said you wouldn't be long. I’ve been so worried, especially with all this bad weather.' 'Sorry, Polly. Can we sit down? I've something to tell you.' He guided his wife back into their sitting room, not even stopping to remove his coat. Setting the cardboard box down on the floor in front of the fire, Simon opened the lid. Two big brown eyes full of mischief peeked out from underneath a warm blanket. Then suddenly, the little Yorkshire Terrier bounded out and leapt straight into Polly’s arms. Polly’s face lit up. 'Oh, Simon! He's gorgeous! Is that where you've been? Buying him? Thank you so much! ' ‘I thought we’d call her Hope...' Perfect,' Polly said, as the puppy's pink little tongue licked her face. 'Hope is just what we need.’ © Maureen Reed

Salons join anti gossip campaign after Flack suicide Hair and beauty salons across the UK, Ireland and here in Spain are publicly pledging a massive shift away from gossip culture. Salons have been joining the movement by sharing a post on Facebook which reads: “As many of you will agree after the recent sad news of Caroline Flack, the unfair press, the negativity bred in these magazines is not healthy. Pages and pages of negativity, fat shaming, shaming celebs with no

make-up and much more. “We will only supply positive magazines providing personal growth, decor, food, fashion, hair inspiration, health and wellbeing.” The salons said they are happy for customers to bring their own gossip magazines if that is what they choose to read but will not be providing them for customers. “We know this doesn’t stop online nasty comments and trolling. However,

we want to help. We want the best for our clients and our staff,” the post continues. “We stand by other salons and businesses that have decided to stop fuelling toxic publications.” Mental health author Matt Haig praised the growing boycott, tweeting: “It is not about closing magazines. It’s about getting them to think about the health of their subject and readers.” Others responded saying the movement could be rolled out across

other industries, such as in dental practices. Tabloid newspapers and showbiz publications have come under criticism over their coverage of Caroline Flack on the run up to her death, with the Sun newspaper deleting an article which mocked the TV presenter over her assault charge. Danielle Simm, manager of Kolo Hair and Beauty Boutique in Chorley, has subscribed to Happy News, set up a

book swapping scheme and provided adult therapy colouring books instead. “I think Caroline’s death has shocked everyone,” she said. “There’s just so much negativity in the world and so many people judging others, and I think a lot of it is to do with social media. But with the gossip magazines, I don’t agree with them, so I’ve decided to get rid of them all. “There are always two sides to a story but what people read they just take as gospel and it’s unfair.”

VEGETABLE TAGINE

POTATO ROSTI WITH SPINACH

Bring the flavours of Morocco to life with this wonderful vegetable and chickpea tagine, bursting with fresh vegetables and fragrant spices.

These potato rosti are perfect for people on a budget, they're cheap, delicious, easy and a great source of protein. Make a big batch and then freeze for simple evening meals. Two rosti would be enough for one person for a main meal if served with a side of salad, steamed veg, hummus, quinoa etc.

Ingredients 1 pinch of saffron 4 cloves of garlic 4 cm piece of ginger olive oil 1 teaaspoon ground cumin ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon ras el hanout (Moroccan spice) 1 tablespoon sun-dried tomato paste 2.5 kg mixed vegetables – use what you have available such as aubergines, courgettes, carrots, cherry tomatoes, red onion, butternut squash, mixed-colour peppers 1 x 400 g tin of chickpeas 100 g dried apricots 1 preserved lemon 300 g couscous ½ a bunch of mixed fresh herbs , such as dill, mint, flat-leaf parsley (15g) 20 g flaked almonds

Method Put the saffron into a jug, cover with 500ml of boiling water and leave to infuse. Meanwhile, peel and finely slice the garlic and ginger, then place in a large casserole pan over a medium heat with 2 tablespoons of oil, the cumin, cinnamon and Moroccan spices. Add the tomato paste, fry for a few minutes, stirring regularly, then pour over the saffron water. Trim and prep the veg, as necessary, then chop into large

Ingredients

chunks, adding them to the pan as you go. Tip in the chickpeas (juices and all), roughly chop and add the apricots and preserved lemon, discarding any pips, then season with sea salt and black pepper. Bring to the boil, cover, reduce the heat to low, and simmer for 45 minutes, or until tender, stirring occasionally. When the veg are almost tender, just cover the couscous with boiling water, season with salt and pepper and pop a plate on top. Leave for 10 minutes, then fluff and fork up. Pick the herb leaves and toast the almonds. Serve the tagine and couscous sprinkled with the almonds and herbs.

500g/16oz potatoes, peeled and grated 200g/7oz firm tofu, patted dry and crumbled into small pieces Handful of fresh spinach or rocket, roughly chopped 3 tbsp gram (chickpea) flour, mixed with 3 tbsp warm water in a small bowl 2 tbsp plain flour 1 tsp cumin seeds 2 tbsp vegetable oil 1 tsp salt 1 tsp freshly ground black pepper (optional)

Method 1. Pat dry the tofu, before crumbling it into a mixing bowl with the grated potato. 2. Add the spinach or rocket, gram flour mixture, cumin, plain flour, salt and pepper and stir the ingredients. 3. Shape the mixture into 6 round rosti, be firm with it but try not to over handle. If it is too wet to hold its shape, add a little more flour. 4. Add a little oil to a large, non-stick frying pan and fry on a medium heat, turning half way through, until golden. Press down the rosti and encourage them to keep their shape

using a fish slice. 5. Serve with a small side salad or leaves and tomatoes and a tablespoon of hummus (optional).

CHAKRAS Wheel of life Chakra is a Sanskrit word meaning “wheel, as in the Wheel of Life. There are 7 chakra points which are layers of multidimensional energy centres in our subtle body, and these energy channels are called 'Nadis'. The life force or vital energy which moves through the Nadis, is called 'Prana'. Each chakra point relates to the other and is denoted as a specific colour and often depicted as a lotus flower. It's important to keep that energy flowing freely, because blocked energy within the chakras can often lead to illness. The energies absorbed by our etheric bodies vibrate at a higher energetic level than those in our physical bodies. Chakras in the body are fine receptors of psychic energy which vibrate at a higher rate than our etheric body and they are known to have an important part to play in our spiritual evolution. This is often known as 'the art of synergy'. Reiki Healing As a Reiki Master/Practitioner I always ensure that I ground myself and bring in the great white light so as not to take on a client's symptoms. People come to me for a treatment with varying problems but there is often a pattern where they feel lethargic, emotional and

unbalanced. As I scan them during a treatment I sense that some, or all of their chakras are blocked. During the treatment I work through each of their chakras starting at the top of the head, which is known as 'the

crown chakra'. Once the universal life force energy flows through me (as a channel) the recipient starts to feel peaceful and will often fall asleep as tension and negative emotions dissipate. At this point it is natural for the recipient to cry because as the energy flows to every cell within the body, it helps to release negativity, whether the person is suffering from physical or mental pain. Positive energy will flow freely once again, and negative energy is 'swept' away.

History of the Chakras There doesn't seem to be much written about the origin of the Chakra, how it came to be, and where the colours of the rainbow (the chakra point colours) were born. In my research, many of the people who have written about the Chakras overcomplicate things, and I wanted an explanation that would be interesting and yet in simple terms because my motto is 'keep it simple'! However, I came across a beautiful site called 'The school of chi energy' which explains it just how I like and I thought I would share the link with you so you can check it out for yourself. Part of this text is taken from the site: The term Chakra is Hindi in origin and are described as emanations of consciousness. This text taken from "A brief history of the Chakras' states that the first known mention of chakras appeared in a number of early Upanishads around 7-800 BCE. Later, around 200 BCE - 200CE, the Upanishad's made reference to tantric concepts such as the chakras and mantras giving both locations and symbolism. In the 10th Century, the Gorakshashatakam, written by Guru Goraknath gave information on the powers of awakening and meditating on the chakras.

Scotland makes history in bid to end period poverty Scottish MPs have backed a bill which would make sanitary products available to all free of charge. The bill was first put forward by Labour’s Monica Lemon and was backed by all parties. However, there is still “a huge amount of work to do” to make the scheme deliverable and affordable. Ministers had originally opposed the plans but changed their position after coming under pressure from campaigners. The government is expected to put forward a raft of amendments to address their "significant" concerns about the legislation, including the estimated £24m annual cost of implementing it. The Period Products (Free Provision) (Scotland) Bill would create a legal duty on the Scottish government to ensure that period products are available free of charge "for anyone who needs them".

Ms Lennon said she was "thrilled" to have support "from right across civic Scotland, from girl guides, trade unions, antipoverty charities and many individuals who have had their own lived experience of period poverty and know what it is like not to have access to products when they need them". She told MSPs that "access to period products should be a right and available to all", and pledged to work with other parties to make sure the proposals are deliverable. Communities Secretary Aileen Campbell said the proposed costs of the scheme had been dramatically underestimated, saying it would take "a whole lot of hard work and endeavour to make sure we can get something that is fit for purpose". She added: "Parliament will now need to pull out all the

stops and work hard collectively and collaboratively." At present tampons, pads and some reusable products are funded in schools, colleges and universities. The Scottish government provided £5.2m funding to support this. Another £4m was made available to councils so the roll-out could be expanded to other other public places, and another £50,000 for free provision in sports clubs. The schools initiative came about after a survey of more than 2,000 people by Young Scot found that about one in four respondents at school, college or university in Scotland had struggled to access period products. Meanwhile about 12% of respondents to research by Plan International said they have had to "improvise sanitary wear".

Dealing with Emergencies It won´t be long before the Easter break brings more traffic on the roads, and this maybe a time when you are thinking of a longer than usual drive yourself. As we prepare for a long journey, it’s always worth keeping in mind that sometimes things happen outside our control, some of which can lead to risky situations, but if we are prepared then the risk can be minimised, and so this week we are going to have a look at some of the most common emergencies, and how to deal with them. According to the Professional Association of Training Companies in Road Safety (Formaster), 60% of drivers do not know how to react to unforeseen driving situations, despite the fact many of them are covered in our driver training, when events don’t occur on a regular basis we can easily forget. When and how to stop in a breakdown or emergency Most drivers know about the hazard lights on a car, although it is important to familiarise yourself with the button if you are not used to the vehicle. However, in the event of a breakdown or emergency the hazard lights must also be accompanied using warning triangles. One at the back and one at the front if

you are on a road where traffic moved in both directions. The triangles must be placed 50 metres from the vehicle and must be visible from 100 metres.

It is also important to protect yourself whilst placing the warning triangles on the road by wearing a high visibility jacket. Try also to make sure that your vehicle is as clear of the carriageway as possible. All these things must be done straight away in order to warn other road users of the hazard. Do this before summoning help. How to avoid problems with tyres It is important to ensure that the tyres are properly inflated for the load they are carrying. This should be checked on a regular basis but is also important before a long journey, especially if the vehicle will be carrying more weight than normal, such as the family and luggage. Tyres are one of the most important safety concerns on a vehicle, but often overlooked. It is Important to check your tyres on a regular basis, and that includes the spare, if your vehicle has one. Some modern cars have emergency repair kits rather than spare wheels, but whatever your vehicle does have, check to make sure the kit is complete and that the tools to carry out a replacement or fix are with the spare or emergency kit. Lights are important All the lights must be checked on a regular basis, including the oftenforgotten light on the rear number plate. Most lights must be replaced in pairs, as their power reduces in time. It is now mandatory for new cars to have Daytime Running Lights, and although these are important safety features, they do not in any way replace the need for headlights during darkness or poor visibility. Daytime Running Lights are designed to make the vehicle more visible for other road users, and are not designed to illuminate the road ahead.

Moreover, they only illuminate the front of the vehicle, and so not using your lights correctly could leave you in a vulnerable position. Fog lights may also be necessary at this time of year but should only be used when visibility is seriously reduced. It is

also important to switch them off again once visibility improves. How to react to an obstacle on the road The appearance of an obstacle such as a loose animal,a scattered load, a fallen tree or other object on the road can cause risky situations. Ifan imminent impact with your vehicle you should avoid any sudden steering moves if possible, as you could skid. Trying to brake is important but pay close attention to whatever is around your vehicle, especially behind, as well as in front. If your vehicle becomes immobilised, or if the obstruction could pose a risk to other road users, remember to protect the scene with your hazard lights and warning triangles before summoning help. Keeping your vehicle in top shape is important to ensure that winter driving is as safe as possible, but if you are involved in an incident, even a minor one, it may be worthwhile getting the car checked by a qualified mechanic.

The Spanish Number Plate System The Spanish number plate system dates back to 1900, although the concept and layout has undergone a number of transformations since then, the latest format taking over a century later in September, 2000. Currently, the Spanish number plate is formed by the European symbol on the left hand side, in a tall band, then four numbers and three letters, which allows a total of 80 million combinations. In other words, the system is safe to continue until 2040. The numeric sequence started at 0000 and ends at 9999, however, interestingly, the letters begin at BBB and will end at ZZZ, but will not contain any vowels, nor will the combination include the letters Ñ or Q. The reason

that vowels are not included is that it avoids the creation of words, for example, BOT, COW, CAT, FBI etc, whereas Ñ and Q are omitted as the number plate system forms part of a European standard and those letters could be confused for others. The first registration system adopted in Spain, which was active until 1971, consisted of one, two or three letters representing the province and up to six numbers without zeros. Although they are becoming less frequent, you can still see some of them on the roads. In October 1971 the alphanumeric provincial format came into force, with one or two letters representing the province, four digits and one or two letters at the end, from A to ZZ.

Do you know if you need or how to exchange your driving licence? Liberty Seguros answers your questions. There are many questions being bounced around about the consequences of Brexit and what effect it will have for those in Spain and other parts of Europe. And, of course, nothing is certain yet. One of the most recurring doubts is about the validity of driving licences. In this regard, you must know that all driving licences issued in any member state of the European Union and the European Economic Area are valid for driving in Spain while they are in force and have not been removed for any reason. While you have your permit in force, the exchange for an equivalent Spanish

driver's licence is completely voluntary. However, don’t forget that once you obtain your legal residence in Spain your licence will be subject to the Spanish regulations regarding its period of validity, control of your psychophysical aptitudes and assignment of a points credit. In those cases, where the driving licence is not subject to a specific period of validity, this will have to be renewed after two years since establishing your legal residence in Spain. However, from January 1st 2021, the general regulations on non-EU countries will apply to the permits

issued by the British authorities and you will be allowed to drive in Spain for only six months from your entry in Spain or from the date of obtaining your legal residence. Therefore, if your driving licence was issued in the United Kingdom and you have been residing in Spain for a longer period than 6 months this will no longer be valid for driving in Spain from that date. To continue driving on Spanish roads without problems, you must exchange your permit to a Spanish licence before the said date. To do so, you must arrange an appointment with your nearest office through https://sedeapl.dgt.gob.es You still might use your Spanish licence in the UK for short visits or exchange it for a UK licence without taking a test if you return to live in the UK. What do you need to exchange your licence?

• Official application form available at the Jefaturas de Tráfico (Provincial Traffic Departments) and on the DGT’s website (www.dgt.es) • Proof of identity and residence: National identity card or passport; your residence card, national identity card or passport and your certificate of registration in the Central Register for Foreign Nationals if you are an EU national; residence card for non-EU nationals. • Foreign driving licence to be exchanged in force. • Up-to-date 32 mm x 26 mm colour photo • Number or proof of payment of having paid the fee II.3: 28,30€ There are three methods of payment: online www.dgt.es, by bank card at Traffic Departments and by direct debit from a bank account or in cash at financial institutions (model form 791 available at Traffic Departments and on www.dgt.es) All our over 300 agents and brokers are highly qualified with extensive experience and will be available to assist you with any questions you may have.

And very importantly, this is done in a personal and friendly way, face to face, in an office environment and not by telephone, unless you so wish. Liberty Seguros excels for the quality of its services, something very well valued by drivers, since they know that they can turn to their insurer at any time to discuss any queries they may have. Liberty Seguros is a very reliable and professional company that has the backing of one of the most important insurance groups in the world: Liberty Mutual. Don’t forget Liberty Seguros not only offers car insurance but also home, life and funeral, amongst others, so you can place all your insurance needs under one expert roof! TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Well, would you look at that. On Saturday morning it looked like only the coronavirus could stop Liverpool going unbeaten in the Premier League season. And then Nigel Pearson reached for the Sarrs, climbed mountains that weren’t actually that high and had many a rainbow shining over him as Watford busted everyone’s acca with a 3-0 win over the Champions elect. Only Jurgen Klopp knows the reason he went with Dejan Lovren, but if it was to match the physical presence of Troy Deeney I think we can safely say it didn’t go to plan. And, no matter how Kloppo chooses to spin the defeat it has done nothing but fuel the flames of those lovely people on social media who believe

Liverpool have been nothing other than ‘lucky’ this season. Yes, Liverpool can go out and destroy everyone else without the pressure of having to go unbeaten for the season. As I said on Friday, if the Reds were to lose a league match this season there was as much chance as any that it would be at Vicarage Road - and Ismaila Sarr would remind Andy Robertson that a bit of defending is needed once in a while. Weirdly, Watford’s victory has also turned out to be Arsenal’s best result of the season - all their fans were able to rejoice in the fact that their Invincibles remain the only unbeaten team of the Premier League era even though Liverpool will end up with about 30 more points come the end of the season. But hey, let the Gunners keep that one - they need it more than those at Anfield. Here’s a list of things we were guaranteed to see at Wembley: John Stones making an absolute boo-boo leading to a goal. Claudio Bravo conceding from the first shot fired on target. Aston Villa getting done by VAR (kinda). Surely, one of the reasons we have VAR is to correct mistakes, no? Yes, Villa should have come up with the cunning plan of actually marking Rodri from the corner at Wembley but it was clear it shouldn’t have been a corner in the first place. Why can’t Mr Stockley Park have a quick look at that one and correct the mistake in under ten seconds? Oh yeah, that one is not under their remit - because their hands are full, presumably, in making a pig’s ear of all the ones that do fall under their remit. I’m not saying it would have meant Villa turned around their 1-0 deficit

and went on to make club history but it would have been a quick win for the PGMOL to show proactive VARing at a Wembley final - even if nobody was likely to be watching. If nothing else, those t-shirts saying ‘I was there when Bravo saved something’ can finally go on sale following his match-winning stop with minutes on the clock. I can only assume he was trying to catch it when he tipped Bjorn Engels’ header on to the post. Peppy G might not be able to enter Europe next season, but no amount of FFP can take away from the fact that his side are utterly dominant in the League Cup - the competition that really matters to some people. Here’s a quick list of things we were very likely to see at Goodison Park on Sunday: A massive balls up from David de Gea. A massive balls up from Jordan Pickford. Richarlison rolling around on the deck within a minute. Sure, you can say that Everton’s VARdenied late winner was correctly ruled out - but let me ask you this. Even if De Gea could have seen it, do you think he’d actually have saved it? For me, it was a little rubbish of Stockley Park to overrule the potential humour of letting the goal stand in favour of following the actual rules. That said, referee Chris Kavanagh demonstrated what minimal control he had over the whole gig by spending a minute discussing matters with his assistant after Maguire had deflected the ball into the net. Nobody cares what you and the lino think, Chris - you’re not running the show anymore, you boys on the pitch. Kavanagh was poor throughout, so poor that he deemed Carlo Ancelotti as being aggressive after the game so sent him off. Yeah, Ancelotti

- a guy so laid back Duncan Ferguson has had to check his pulse at least five times since he rocked up at Everton. Another week has passed us by and we are still no nearer seeing evidence of the new Jose Mourinho actually existing. Unless, of course, the new Mou involves being 2-1 up in the second half at home and losing 3-2. Whilst Spurs, United and Chelsea are making no real effort whatsoever to tie down a place in the top five, Wolves are efficiently going about their business and could well find themselves in Europe’s elite competition next season. As for Tottenham, they are going nowhere quickly. Imagine the summer carnage when Jose doesn’t have four new signings agreed by time the final whistle goes in the Champions League final. According to Moysey, you ‘cannot rely on a kid in the Championship’ to keep West Ham in the Premier League. Ladies and gents, this is just another example of Moyes having his finger on the pulse even if Saturday’s result does remind you that what you do get with David is a manager ‘who knows how to win’. Jarrod Bowen was the attacking spark the Hammers needed and their 3-1 win at the Athletics Stadium fires them up to 16th, however brief that stay might be. The West Ham fans protested against the board - the very same board who have invested in the strongest playing squad in the club’s history. The only problem is, they’ve bought a load of nice cars but forgot to find anyone that can drive them properly. Yeah, West Ham did win which is why I am being gentle on them this week. Graham Potter needs a magic wand to keep Brighton up. They are the team who are dropping like a stone and they

need their form to turnaround soon before they forget what it’s like to win a match. I’m no football manager, obviously, but even I thought it might have been wise to pick erstwhile goalscorer Glenn Murray against his former club - mainly because players always feel like they score against their former club and Glenn Murray always seems to score against Palace. And Glenn Murray scores goals. But hey, what do I know? I do know that Christian Benteke is probably a lovely guy but he is horrible in front of goal still. I was really hoping he would score on Feb 29th so there was some kind of ‘he only scores every four years’ kind of gag but his side-foot volley went out for a throw. Kelechi Iheanacho must wonder what VAR has against him personally. Last week, he was cleaned out by Ederson and nobody batted an eyelid. This week, the ball hits someone else first then brushes his arm so his excellent run and finish gets disallowed. Granted, this one is more to do with the law than the judge, but still - he’s not had much luck in the last seven days. Leicester are still in horrid form. I’m pretty sure Jamie Vardy hasn’t scored since his most recent addition to the family was born and he must be wondering if he should shelve the preplanned baby-born celebration now. After all, at this rate, the kid will be walking before Vardy adds to his goal tally. Finally today, I am guessing Newcastle have banned celebrating goals as well as handshakes to make sure the coronavirus isn’t going to spread further?

SMGS at Vistabella Round two of this season’s SMGS Eclectic competition saw 41 members along with 3 guests arrive early at Vistabella for a day’s golf fully sponsored by Spanish Insurance, for whom Leisa Geddes presented the prizes (following congratulations conveyed by those present on her recent matrimony). Unlike the society’s last visit in January, fine weather prevailed in the days leading up to the outing, meaning that buggies were allowed on fairways. This ensured far fewer cancellations than last time out. The sunshine and

Bronze: Dave, Norman and Mike

unseasonal temperatures continued in to Wednesday and contributed to some very decent scoring. Although the always treacherous greens and pin positions did their best to make life difficult, dry rolling fairways helped balance things out. Whilst Gold Category recorded the higher scores, Darren Hancock having the day’s best return with 37 points, all 15 prize winning members had 32 points or more, 11 having to be determined on countback, Gold: Mark, Robin, Darren H and Darren S. quite possibly a record for the society. to the top of the Order of Merit with his Even the Best Guest prize needed maximum, with Norman Cahill second countback to be used! Darren now goes and Mike Jordan third. Leading the Eclectic with three rounds remaining is Colin Smith, (45 points), followed closely by Brian Mulligan (44) and Dave Bishop (43). The day’s prizes were won by the following: Bronze Category: 5th Roger Carter (32 on CB), 4th Mike Kaylor (32 on CB), 3rd Norman Padmore (33), 2nd Mike Jordan (35 on CB) and 1st Dave Bishop, also with 35 points. Silver Category: 5th Alan MacDonald (32 on CB), 4th Ken Flaherty (32 on CB), 3rd Mike Greatorex (32 on CB), 2nd Brian Mulligan (34) and 1st Captain Phil de Lacy with 35 points Gold Category: 5th Darren Strugnell (35

on CB), 4th Norman Cahill (35 on CB), 3rd Robin Eastman (36 on CB), 2nd Mark Preston (36 on CB) and 1st, with the day’s best score of 37 points, Darren Hancock. Nearest the pins on par 3’s: Hole 2 Tom Plunkett, Hole 7 Mike Jordan, Holes 11 & 15 Darren Strugnell Abacus: Dave Alderdice Guest Prize: Tony Monsellato (26 on CB) Our thanks go to all Vistabella staff for their contribution to an enjoyable day. Next week we will be at Altorreal, a change from the original location for this date (March 4th) of Saurines, which remains closed for continuing rehab work. Keep up to date with all SMGS matters by logging on to our website www.smgs.org or simply give Captain Phil de Lacy a call on 652553362.

Our week started with the dreaded ‘Yellow Peril’ plus the next best two scores to count. It wasn’t that dreaded though for Pete Dunn, Petina Murray, Paul Brown and Albert as they managed to rack up 152 points and claim 1st place. Wednesday and it was the much anticipated President’s (Dave Pulling) 14 versus the Secretary’s (Olga Douglas) 14 in singles match-play. Resplendent in our pink attire (or red or any other colour if you don’t read Facebook) it was the Secretary’s team who took the day with an overwhelming win of 10 matches to 4. Some notable results were Lindsay Forbes (for the President’s) beating Benedicte Kruse 7&5 and Jan Svendsen (for the Secretary’s) overcoming Mike Chapman 4&3. (Oh all right then I won my game 3&2

against Alan Carter). A great day’s fun and welcomed by everyone, added to which we raised just short of 200 Euro for cancer research. There was still a ‘2’s pot on the day with Benedicte managing to be the sole winner. Friday’s ‘2 Ball Better Ball’ saw Nick Campbell and Reg Akehurst win by a country mile with a score of 46 points. A mention here must go to John Drakesmith’s very strong shoulders as he had the misfortune of drawing me as his playing partner. Por ultimo (and just for Terry Field) Henry Beard once said, ‘Play it as it lies is one of the fundamental dictates of golf. The other is wear it if it clashes’. Pues hasta la semana que viene Peter Reffell

ABBEY ANGLING The 8th and penultimate round of the Abbey Angling Cup was fished on the river Segura at Murcia on the 25th February. It was a lovely bright day, with a reasonably good turn out and the sun is starting to creep over the wall on to some of the pegs, which is beginning to warm them up, but with the water temperature still low this is keeping the weights down. Sporting Guardamar C.F."A" v CD Montesinos

Win Ugly or Ugly Win? TEAM:- Carlos 13, Jose Perez 22, Manu 5, Lucas 7, Luis 8, Manuel Sanchez 9, Pamies 14, Damien 20, Dario 21, Andres 24, German 23. SUB’s:- Nikolay 1, Morante 2, Adrian 6, Alfredo 10, Cristian 19. So the saying goes, real champions can play badly and still find a way to win. Such was the case as table-toppers CD Montesinos took on Sporting Guardamar last Sunday. Another win would secure Monte's 8 point advantage over their nearest rivals in the on-going quest for promotion. After another “niggly” start, the sizeable crowd were treated to a moment of magic with barely 8 minutes on the clock when the ball broke to GERMAN (23) outside the box, who then deliciously lobbed a ball that caught the Guardamar keeper off guard and found the net. Hopes were understandably high for more to come. Sadly, what followed was, to put it mildly, a real disappointment. Rather than capitalising on the great start, Monte mysteriously got drawn into a midfield tug-o-war. The game, punctuated with a seemingly endless succession of fouls and stoppages, sank without trace as a spectacle. Yes, Monte had half chances, but they were lacklustre and devoid of any the bright, attacking play we have become accustomed to. Way too many players having off days and appearing not to care. Their opponents though, were

equally as bad, showing very little, despite Monte's uninspiring efforts in front of them. Something had to change in the final period. HT: Sporting Guardamar CF “A” 0 – 1 CD Montesinos I would have been delighted to say that the break brought about a change, painfully, the same thin gruel was offered up. The game wasn't so much

stop-start as stop-stop and more stop! Guardamar, with the one goal deficit, slowly realised that they might get something from the match and rallied briefly, they even forced CARLOS (13) into a couple of good saves and hit the post with a fierce drive. Monte's response seemed to be, more of the same, but with substitutes. The contest grew more and more nervy as full time approached, when substitutes ALFREDO

(10) and newby CRISTIAN (19) were introduced. These fresh legs seemed to unnerve the Guardamar back line who suddenly found themselves struggling to cope with this new attacking threat. Into the last five minutes, their resistance broke, when, released by the largely ineffective DAMIEN (20), ALFREDO (10) drew the keeper and chipped into the empty net. The relief on the pitch AND in the crowd was palpable. Literally, minutes later in a copy-cat move, a rejuvenated DAMIEN (20) lobbed home smartly to finish the job. Be under no illusions, this was a pale copy of the Monte we have seen in previous games this season. Their shape was wrong, their passing lacking in intent, thought and competence, their approach looked shabby and flat. They will have to up their game more than a notch for future encounters if they are not to be found out by better opponents. Still, a win is a win. Vamos Monte.
