Coronavirus creeps closer The first cases of Coronavirus have been diagnosed in the Vega Baja, Alicante and Murcia provinces with facts and figures changing daily. The majority of these cases are travel related and are being contained and officials are calling for calm. COVID-19 is mainly spread from person-to-person, usually via close contact or through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. The virus may also

spread through surfaces that have been touched by those infected. The virus then gains entry into your body when you touch your face. Its symptoms appear to arise in as little as 2 days after exposure or as long as 14 days after. Some people with the virus show very mild symptoms, while others fall severely ill. Because symptoms are so similar to a cold or flu, it's important not to jump to conclusions, but if you are experiencing

fever, cough, and difficulty breathing, the World Health Organisation (WHO) suggests seeking medical care early. If you have travelled to a high risk area in the last 14 days and are displaying the three main symptoms (fever, cough and difficulty breathing) it is recommended to telephone your health centre in advance before making your way there. The WHO also recommends that people frequently clean their hands with soap and water or by using 60 percent alcohol-based hand gel. It's also important that, when coughing and sneezing, people always cover their mouth and nose with the inside of the elbow or a tissue (and then immediately throwing that used tissue away and washing their hands). People should also try their best to avoid others who have a fever or cough. The Orihuela-Alicante Diocese has issued advice to parishes in the region to avoid potential spread of the virus. The advice includes avoiding the traditional ‘besapiés’ where mass goers would kiss the feet of a holy statue, a popular practice over the Easter period.

Instead, people can genuflect to the statue. Holy water fonts are not to be used and physical contact should be avoided during mass – a nod of the head instead of a handshake at the ‘sign of peace’ section of the mass. Priests and ministers of the Eucharist are also encouraged to wash their hands before and after giving communion.

BITE SIZE NEWS:

Would be robbers foiled

A number of local businesses have reported a problem this week with counterfeit bills. It’s often the case that the client paying in the money is not aware that the notes are false, and often has received the dud money as change. National Police this week issued a warning that the counterfeit detector marker pen is not always effective in identifying false notes. Note detector pens use an iodine based ink which reacts with starch. Typically, genuine banknotes are printed on paper based on cotton fibres and do not contain the starches that are reactive with iodine. When the pen is used to mark genuine bills, the mark is yellowish or colourless. Such pens are most effective against counterfeit notes printed on a standard

This week the Costa Blanca People was contacted by local lady Sheila Chinnock who wanted to warn people about would be robbers in the Playa Flamenca area. Sheila, who turned 71 this week, was walking back from an appointment in the middle of the day recently, when a black car pulled up alongside her. Inside there was man driving and a woman in the passenger seat. Both had olive skin and were dark haired and the man had close cut beard. The woman was smiling and had a ‘round, pleasant face’. Sheila thinks they could have been in their forties, with the woman looking plump and the man slimmer. The woman spoke to Sheila in Spanish and Sheila asked her if spoke English, and the woman then asked for directions to the shopping centre, which Shelia gave. The woman was looking at Sheila’s hands and said she wanted to by her father a gold ring and pointed to a specific ring on Sheila’s hand asking to see it. It was then alarms bells began to sound for Sheila. The woman was saying she wanted to see the numbers on the ring and tried to grab her hand and pull it towards her to snatch the ring. She told Sheila ‘I want to see this one’ and grabbed for Sheila’s hand-made gold and topaz ring. Sheila luckily pulled her hand back out of reach just in time and told the lady there was no way she was taking the ring off to let her look at it. As Sheila

backed away the car sped off. However, this opportunistic attempt at robbery could have ended much worse as the roads – leading from the Citrus Centre to the new school in La Florida – where the incident deserted happened were deserted and its lucky the robbers didn’t get out of the car to confront their target. Sheila said: “I’ve had that ring since I was 21 and there was no way I was handing it over, but the attempt did leave me feeling shocked and shaken. I walk around my local community a lot and have never experienced any issues before.” From local feedback and on facebook appears a black car has been involved in a number of incidents and there is speculation the couple are Romanian. Sheila has reported the incident to the local police but wanted to warn people to be vigilant.

New agreement for early Cartagena street goes detection of cancer viral

QuirónSalud Torrevieja has signed a collaboration agreement with cancer support charity AFECÁNCER in order to offer members a reduced rate for diagnostic tests for the early detection of

To avail of the discount, one would need to become a supporting member of AFECÁNCER which costs just €20 per year. Membership fees can be made payable to AFECÁNCER to the account number (IBAN) ES22 2100 1814 2402

cancer. All members of AFECÁNCER can now book a series of tests (such as mammograms, gynaecological checkups etc) at a greatly reduced rate.

A street in Cartagena has 24 zebra crossings along a space of 800 metres. The street has now become a viral joke across Spain since it was featured on national news. The road in question is very narrow and is crisscrossed by other streets. The doors of the houses open almost directly on to the road because the path is so narrow. Residents of the street however do not complain about the bizarre number of zebra crossings because they believe they prevent cars from going too fast and that otherwise, accidents would occur. Since news of the street went viral, residents have noticed an influx of people coming to see the zebra crossings.

Huge haul of methamphetamine found in La Romana Police in Spain have seized 752kg of methamphetamine after breaking up a gang that was smuggling the drug into the country by hiding it in special cavities drilled into huge blocks of marble. The investigation into Spain’s largestever seizure of the drug began last August after police and inland revenue officers noticed that a company was importing 25-tonne marble blocks from Mexico to the Spanish port of Valencia despite lacking the necessary resources and infrastructure. A joint operation between the Guardia Civil, national police and customs officers was launched to look into the apparent shell company and soon began probing a shipment of six large marble blocks that arrived in Valencia in mid-October. Officers noticed strange markings on the base of one of the blocks and monitored the stone as it was transported to a quarry in the town of La Romana in Alicante province. Subsequent raids led to the arrest of five people, the confiscation of 352kg of methamphetamine – and the discovery of the smugglers’ modus operandi. “To avoid detection, the suspects had drilled holes – or cylindrical cavities – into the

marble, in which they had hidden 43 plastic-wrapped packets of the drug,” the Guardia Civil said in a statement. “Once the plastic packages were inserted into the cavities – a task performed in Mexico – the blocks were sealed with resin, topped with a marble cover and finally finished off with very tough mortar.” While the resultant surface looked like marble, the statement added, the altered side of the 25-tonne block was placed face down as a precaution against suspicious eyes. Shortly afterwards, customs officers intercepted another shipment of marble and found another drilled-out block, this time containing 400kg of methamphetamine. The investigating team recovered five guns and €150,000 (£129,000) in cash, seized assets including 19 properties, 14 vehicles and froze seven banks accounts. Twenty-six “uncontaminated” blocks of marble were also confiscated.

savvy counterfeiters are now adding substances to the paper they use to print false bills to ensure the pen will not leave a dark mark. Therefore, the Bank of Spain and the National Police recommend verifying the authenticity of banknotes through the “touch, look, turn” method. To the touch, the authentic banknote provides a firm, resistant and rough texture. In addition, some of its printed elements such as the figure noting the denomination of the note - have a bumpy texture. When looking, you should check for the note’s watermarks. Finally, it is recommended to turn the note to the light to see how the holographic patch or band changes with the angle, alternating between the note’s value and the representation of a door or window or the euro symbol along the band.

Torrevieja Hospital records video clip to honour women The University Hospital of Torrevieja

has recorded a video clip in collaboration with the singer, songwriter Shani Ormiston, to commemorate International Women's Day. A CD with the video clip has been distributed among patients and professionals. Under the title Guerrera ('Warrior'), the song pays tribute to the female workers at the hospital. Shani said, “I composed this song to honour all the women who are examples to follow.” You can watch the video of GUERRERA by following this link: https://youtu.be/bCRTt480DJ0

Man arrested for beating mother to death A man has been arrested in Torrevieja for allegedly beating his mother to death with a baseball bat. Guardia Civil arrested a 40-year-old man of Belgian nationality for allegedly killing his 81year-old mother with a baseball bat at her home in Torrevieja. The arrest took place at dawn on March 3 at the villa on Calle Leonardo da Vinci, in San Luis. The man is said to have called emergency services himself, claiming that his mother was badly injured when a wardrobe fell on top of her by accident. Local Police were first on the scene and discovered that the victim had already passed away. Officers contacted the Guardia Civil who, on arrival, observed obvious signs that the story was not credible and that a violent incident had taken place. The suspect had a restraining order barring contact with his mother after a similar assault in October 2019.

Blanca beaches Scientists have released a new study suggesting 50 percent of the world’s sandy beaches could vanish by 2100 if nothing is done to curb climate change. Dozens of tourism meccas – including the Costa Blanca – are under threat from erosion and surging sea levels. But the experts were optimistic that the destruction could be reduced by 40 percent if moderate action was taken to reduce greenhouse gases. The warnings come from the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre in Ispra, northern Italy, which analysed 30 years of satellite images of sandy beaches, from Australia to Brazil and Europe. Dr Michalis Vousdoukas, who led the research, said: “The results indicate around 50% of the world’s sandy beaches are at risk of severe erosion. Half of the world’s beaches could

disappear by the end of the century under current trends of climate change and sea level rise. “The situation can become more critical for small communities highly reliant on tourism.” Spain’s beaches are fundamental to its highly vital tourism industry, so a mass erosion of its beaches could have serious economic consequences. Using computer modelling systems, the study was able to forecast how the beaches, already having lost ground, would erode further as climate change worsens. In a worse case scenario, areas like The Gambia and Guinea-Bissau could lose more than 60 percent while Australia was forecast to be hit the hardest, losing up to 12,000km of beach. The study was published in the Nature Climate Change journal.

Exclusive Hilton hotel opens in Alicante One of the world's most exclusive hotels is in Spain – and one of only five of its type in the country - Hilton Curio has opened in Alicante. The newly-opened Casa Alberola Boutique Hotel offers unrivalled views of the seafront and yacht marina in Alicante, from floor-toceiling shuttered windows with balconies, and takes full advantage of the original architecture of the late 19thcentury building which went up at a time when well-to-do Europeans would spend their winters in the city. Part of the Hilton Curio Collection, the Casa Alberola has been restored to its original splendour with more besides by developers Balazs Companie, S.L. Hilton Curio Collection hotels are the chain's top-of-the-range boutiques, carefully selected for their distinctive character and unique nature and for being a 'personification of the area' where they are based, the company explains. At present, only 79 Curio hotels operate worldwide, of which four others, besides the recently-opened

Casa Alberola, are in Spain – in Madrid, Ibiza, Barcelona, and Málaga. Marble floors and walls, velvet and elaborate sculpture and relief work are among the decoration, which is partly inspired by the 1920s when élite tourism in Alicante truly began to take off. The rooms are the size of a small UK flat. Its 'exclusive' nature is in its décor and location, however, not in its price. Rooms start from €85 a night per room during off-peak season and so are affordable to all.

January visitors break four million barrier Tourist numbers fell significantly for Spain in January, but were still at over 4.1 million – the equivalent of nearly 10 percent of the country's population which, at the lowest point of low season, is not to be sniffed at. As yet, figures for February 2020 have not been analysed, but for the previous month, even allowing for the looming Brexit deadline on 31st January and for the start of the Coronavirus outbreak, were very healthy. Naturally, the main destination region for foreign visitors was the Canary Islands, which tend to be warmer than the mainland and largely escape the worst of the storms, cold snaps and other winter phenomena that hit the rest of the country. Here, a total of 1.1 million holidaymakers – just over a quarter of the total – were recorded; an excellent result for the archipelago, even if it was 5 percent lower than in January 2019. Catalunya came next – even though low season does mean fewer visitors and January is a difficult month financially for most households, Barcelona is a delight whatever the weather, and the rest of the region is ideal for non-beach tourism in mid-winter. The north-eastern region welcomed 868,168 visitors, a fall of 4.5 percent on January 2019, and Madrid, which is also a popular city-break destination outside the traditional holiday season, saw 611,422 tourists, a fall of 4.6 percent. Whilst Spain is, unfortunately, in the heart of the Coronavirus crisis, its 261 cases – mostly originating from the far worse Italian epidemic – are negligible in comparison with seasonal 'flu and fairly centralised. A worry for tourism industries

nevertheless, it is likely figures for February and March will be considerably lower than for these months in 2019, but the fact that visitors only reduced by between 4.5 percent and 5 percent in January – when Brexit was also a consideration for many – has given the sector hope that the damage may not be as great as feared. Less Brits British tourist numbers dropped by 11 percent compared with the previous January, but with 718,248 in total, continued to be the largest international holidaymaker market, nearly 50 percent higher than that of the Germans, with 493,711 visitors, down by 4.6 percent. Yet French tourists sharply increased in number – to 480,364, or up by 7.7 percent. And those holidaymakers who still opted to travel to Spain in January spent more money €4,778,570 in total,

compared with €4,689,330 last year, €4.5 million in 2018, €4.26m in 2017, and €3.74m in 2016. Price rises in Spain and overall salary rises in northern Europe have not been enough to explain the differences per se, meaning that, even if visitor numbers have fallen, spending has gone up to help compensate for it, giving a fairly consistent result. The average foreign holidaymaker in Spain in January spent €1,155 each, including accommodation – 3.6 percent more than in January 2019, despite staying for shorter periods, or an average of eight days. And the overall total expenditure was up by 2.1 percent on January the previous year, exceeding 'normal' yearon-year price increases, making the reduction in actual numbers less of a problem as the economy still benefited more in January 2020.

Orihuela marked International Women’s Day on Sunday 8th March with a march entitled ‘XThousand Motives’. The event organised by the Department for Equality encouraged families and children to accompany their Mothers and for all to walk in the support of the role of women. The walk ended at the Gabriel Miró roundabout. There, Inmaculada Sánchez, member of the Equality Board and coordinator of "Vega Baja Acoge" read a manifesto and talked of celebrating women’s achievements and raise awareness against bias. Councillor for Equality, Mayte Sánchez, added: “We encourage all residents of the Vega Baja to join this call with which we commemorate this important day.” The same calls were made all across the world as marches to raise awareness of discrimination against women took place in cities around the world to mark International Women's Day. The protests have been widespread

and well-attended despite concerns about the coronavirus. People around the world have been marking 8th March as a special day for women for more than a century and grew out of the labour movement to become a UN-recognised annual event. Several protests took place across Spain. One in the capital,

Madrid, was organised by a feminist group demanding equal working rights, women's right to abortion and an end to violence against women. In the UK, many feminist groups held online campaigns instead of street marches, but this "March4Women" demonstration in London drew large crowds, including the English actress Natalie Dormer.

Facelift for Cabo Roig promenade The Department of Infrastructure for Orihuela, headed by Councillor Ángel Noguera has started work on the Paseo de Cabo Roig in Orihuela. The Councillor explained that "they are works of adaptation and remodelling of the promenade of Cabo Roig, which includes from the beaches of La Caleta to Cala Capitán, with an investment of € 475,000. Cabo Roig is one of the first line urbanisations located on the Oriolan coast and its shoreline is one of the most beautiful on the Mediterranean coast. Since the construction of its promenade there had been no maintenance or repair work carried out. Therefore, it was necessary to carry out an intervention to improve both its safety and accessibility. The action, which was agreed in the previous mandate by the councillor for Playas de Orihuela, Luisa Boné, consists of the adaptation of the wall along the two kilometres of walkway that joins the two beaches, the placement of a wooden railing to guarantee the safety of

Work underway

International Women's Day At a march in the Indonesian capital Jakarta, women from numerous organisations and trade unions demanded the government revoke what they see as gender discriminative laws - such as the "omnibus law" - and create new laws to protect women. In Germany, hundreds of women road bicycles through the streets of Berlin as part of a feminist demonstration labelled "Purple Ride". Women at Turkey's border with Greece held a demonstration demanding they be permitted to cross during International Women's Day. There have been fierce clashes between migrants and Greek border security, as the former seek access to the EU. Across Pakistan, marches took place in several cities in the face of violent threats and legal petitions. Here, people hold placards calling for an end to violence against women as they demonstrate in Islamabad.

pedestrians and the repair of the pavement in those sections where it is in poor condition. It should also be noted that the entire promenade will now be illuminated to allow walkers to be safe when using the footpath in the evening and connect the Oriolan sea promenades more effectively. The lights are integrated into the wall that runs along the promenade so that they provide indirect light that does not produce light pollution and it is hoped the illumination will be an attraction for tourists to walk at night in this beautiful area of the coast. The work also includes the remodelling of the five viewpoints that Cabo Roig has."The implementation of the new promenade at Cabo Roig has a period of execution of three months, so, unless something unexpected is discovered, both residents and visitors to Orihuela Costa can enjoy this feature next summer," explained the Councillor.

Local supermarkets Noise pollution 'discover' ready meals causes suffering 'Ready meals' have never really been a 'thing' in Spain, with supermarket produce historically focusing largely on raw ingredients and very geared up to home cooking – but now, with the two newest generations of adults who, unless they are in the catering industry, admit they can just about cope with microwaving a tortilla without their mum's supervision, pre-packed dinners are taking off. Unlike their UK counterparts, they are typically freshly made daily and sold in tupperwares in the refrigeration compartments – as in the newly refurbished Mercadona supermarkets but the fare is international enough that they appeal to a wide audience such as lasagne, quiche, and vegetarian, fish and vegan options. Pre-packed mixed salads, wraps, packs of croquettes, pasta dishes, chicken nuggets, paella, falafel and tahini, chips, ravioli, spaghetti, lentil or bean stew, and risotto are among the staples at Mercadona, whilst at El Corte Inglés, many of the options include fresh seafood, roast chicken, chicken curry, stuffed peppers, stuffed aubergine, paella, and goat's cheese lasagna with fresh vegetables, justifying their higher prices. Carrefour offers a commendable value-for-money price-versus-quality ratio, with paella, fresh fish in sauce,

chickpea casserole, stews, pastas, truffle and potato soup, battered squid rings, cannelloni, and cuts of meat, typically at around €10 to €13 a kilo. Sales of ready meals in supermarkets have risen by over 10 percent in the past year, with Mercadona having captured the lion's share of the market – about two-thirds. Although many modern workplaces are switching to earlier finishing times with shorter lunch breaks, and the need to commute some distance from home means it is not feasible to return, cook lunch and go back to work, old habits die hard and nearly all Spaniards continue to eat their main meal in the middle of the day rather than at night after clocking off. And the shorter lunch breaks and faster, busier pace of modern life, especially with far fewer parents able to be stay-at-home child-carers, means cooking is something that tends to happen at weekends – if at all, in some homes, given that families traditionally all meet for long lunches together at weekends and it will tend to be the older generations present who do the cooking. This new trend has started to see more and more supermarkets jumping on the ready-meal bandwagon and trying to outdo each other on either price or quality, or both.

The latest to sign up are German chains Lidl and Aldi – whilst not, in general, radically cheaper in Spain than most other supermarkets, and being similar in overall price to the majority of mainstream stores, their pre-packed meal selection substantially undercuts most of the others. Lidl focuses more on traditional fastfood fare – cheeseburgers, barbecue wraps, chicken wings, hot dogs, half a roast chicken, chicken nuggets and mini-Calzone pizzas – where the selection for pescatarians is extremely limited and for vegetarians and vegans, practically nil, but the prices are excellent and it would be hard to buy the raw ingredients and home-cook them for less money. Spicy chicken wings come in at €2.49, burgers at €1.19 and hot dogs at just under €2. Aldi's range costs from 99 cents through to €6.49, and a total of 31 dishes are offered. International fare is prolific, including mini Frikadellen 50% pork burgers, which come pre-cooked and in a fairly generous quantity for €2.69; and, ideal for vegetarians or vegans – perhaps combined with something else to make it a full meal – or for those on a weightloss diet, a tomato, pepper and onion tabouleh with just 159 calories costs €1.19.

One in five Europeans suffers from noise pollution considered harmful to their health, the European Environment Agency (EEA) has said in a recent report. The report also criticised the EU's failure to meet its own commitments. "Notably, the objective set for 2020... of decreasing noise pollution and moving towards the WHO recommended levels for noise exposure will not be achieved," the agency said in a statement. It added that in fact "noise pollution is projected to increase because of future urban growth and increased demand for mobility." Noise pollution, especially at night, affects public health across Europe, as noise can disrupt sleep, and chronic noise is known to cause cardiovascular and psycho-physiological effects as well as reducing cognitive performance. According to the EEA, an estimated 113 million people across Europe are affected by long-term traffic noise levels. In addition, 22 million suffer from noise

pollution from trains and four million from aviation. Noise pollution also has a real impact on people's health. According to the agency, such exposure could be traced to the 12,000 premature deaths and as a contributing factor to cognitive disorders in 12,500 children in Europe. European decision-makers, at both local and national levels, must roll up their sleeves in order to reduce noise levels, the agency said. "Really looking at addressing urban mobility and moving away from vehicular transport... facilitating active transport like cycling and walking but also public transport can really have the most significant impact," Catherine Ganzleben, head of the EEA's Air Pollution, Environment and Health Department, said at a press briefing. She noted that these measures, some of which have begun to be implemented, will also help to improve air quality in European cities.

Two more Vega Baja mayors threatened with prosecution The Catalan Ombudsman of the Valencian Community, Ángel Luna, is continuing with his crusade to get municipalities to respond to the requests for information. If the first target was the Mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, who was given ten days to respond or would take him to the Prosecutor's Office, he has now formally communicated with the Mayors of Formentera del Segura, Francisco Cano, and Benijófar, Luis Rodríguez , that if within the same period "they do not meet information requirements, you will go to the Prosecutor's Office for disobedience". As the Sindictura Communication cabinet explained: "None of the two municipalities of the Vega Baja of Alicante has responded to the initial request for a report in response to a complaint that was opened in March 2019, nor to the three requirements that have been made to them subsequently; the last one on 24th February." The Ombudsman opened the complaint when it was alerted to the large amount of plastic spills with pesticides that accumulate in the area near the mouth of the Segura River and addressed the administrations involved. The Ombudsman is responsible for supervising the municipalities of the Segura riverbed in the Valencian Community, the Provincial Council and the Ministry of Environment. All institutions were asked to report on the measures planned to prevent the dumping of waste at random and they have now done so, except Formentera del Segura and Benijófar. "Angel Luna is determined to enforce

the institution he directs and, as announced at the beginning of his term, he will resort to using all the measures he can to fulfil his duties in defence of the rights of citizens and to protect communities. For now, the Mayors have been formally warned and requested to answer the Síndic ", adds the note. Letter of the law Article 502.02 of the Criminal Code states that an authority that hinders an investigation by the Ombudsman, Court of Accounts or equivalent bodies of the Autonomous Communities will be punished as an "inmate of the crime of disobedience" for denying or unduly delaying the sending of reports requested.

Pilar couple convicted of killing their baby The Prosecutor's Office has requested 14 years in prison for the mother and three years and nine months for the father for killing their baby in Pilar de la Horadada. The jury returned a guilty verdict to the two parents accused of murdering their newborn baby by throwing it into a rubbish bin. As soon as the Mother gave birth in October 2016 the baby was dumped in the municipal rubbish container nearest to their house. The jury unanimously declared the mother the instigator of the crime, whilst the father is believed to have been an accomplice as he did nothing to prevent the tragedy and helped the woman to take the rubbish bags to the bin. The defendants themselves had confessed to the crime during the trial, after reaching an agreement which would reduce the sentence if they confessed. The Prosecutor's Office reduced the Mother’s penalty from 20 years to 14 and for the father to 3 years and 9 months. The jury heard that the woman only told her husband that she was pregnant when she was about to give birth because she thought the child could have been fathered by another man. However, the jury did not believe this

version as several neighbours told Guardia Civil officers that the woman was pregnant. Therefore, if it was noticeable to neighbours then its unlikely that "her husband did not know." The court also highlighted in the

reading of the conclusions the contradictions in the statements of the accused, such as where each one was at the time of the birth. The jury pointed out that the woman said that "he was at the top of the house, while he said they were both on the top floor". The couple have two other daughters aged 8 and 12 years old at the time of the crime, and the man said he was with them. The jury noted that the child was born alive and with a good chance of

survival "if he had received basic medical care" as experts testified during the trial. The magistrate of the Seventh Section is now responsible for filing the sentence and issuing the years to be spent in prison for each of the accused. The Prosecutor's Office objected at the close of the trial to any further reduction in the penalty for the child's mother, who has been in prison since she was arrested, two days after finding the body of the child. In the case of the suspension of the sentence for the father, he did not object but indicated that in the event that the defence requested any benefit or suspension, he would respond in writing to show his agreement or opposition to the recommendations. Possible suspension The lawyer of the defendant, Francisca López, has requested that the judge suspend the sentence, despite her client being in prison for more than two years. The verdict of the jury arrived five hours after the beginning of the deliberations, after a two day of trial in the jury heard, not only the testimony of the accused, establishment of the facts but the testimony of the Civil Guard officers who conducted the investigation and the expert knowledge of the forensics professionals who performed the autopsy on the child and ruled the cause of death.

Artichokes in Almoradi A gastronomic weekend dedicated to the star product and jewel of the Vega Baja – the artichoke has been held in Almoradi. Celebrated in Constitution Square the sixth annual National Artichoke Congress aimed to highlight both local cuisine and regional agriculture. The event saw the star ingredient offered and presented in different dishes to visitors through the elaborate tapas creations by the participating establishments, in addition to showing its potential in preserves, rice and stew by the hand of the Peña Huertana Los Santicos de la Piedra. The event was officially opened by the Mayor of the municipality, María Gómez, the Councilor for Tourism, José Antonio Latorre, the president of the Alcachofa Vega Baja Association, Diego Martínez, the director general of Rural Development of the Generalitat, David Torres and the provincial deputy, Sebastián Cañadas, who stressed the importance of supporting activities that promote the traditions and culture of the area, as well as the

work of the farmers, even more so in these times when these producers are demanding more support in their work and fairer prices. The Mayor of Almoradí also emphasised the special aspect of this year’s event due to the hard work of the community to recover after the DANA, “so this congress has been carried out with more dedication and passion than ever, we are celebrating this event again trying to support all the productive sectors of Almoradí, especially the farmers,” he

explained. Despite the huge losses of artichokes caused by the September floods, a thousands and thousands of kilos were served in a lively atmosphere, with ‘showcooking’ presentations with renowned chefs from across the area, in addition to children's workshops. The party continues today and from 9th to 13th of this month with the gastronomic celebration in five restaurants in Almoradí: Silvino, Angelín, El Buey, Los Infantes and El Cruce.

La Marina drug haul Local Police in San Fulgencio arrested a man who had more than a kilo and a half of marijuana, as well as 99 grams of hashish in his house. Officers went to the address after the Guardia Civil received a call from the man in which he said that he wanted to voluntarily hand over a drug stash. However, when officers knocked on the door of the house in Urbanisation La Marina it was obvious the man had changed his mind and was trying to get rid of the drug by burning it. The police noticed the strong

smell of marijuana and smoke that was coming from the bathroom as they arrived. On investigation they found that the individual had begun to burn the more than a kilo and a half of marijuana. The man however, did hand over to officers several narcotic substances and his attempts to make his stash `disappear’ failed and the police seized the 1.5 kilos of marijuana despite the homeowners best efforts. They also confiscated 99 grams of hashish and nine seedlings which may well have

been the start of a small plantation. Local Police officers arrested the individual for an alleged crime against public health and he was transferred to the Civil Guard barracks of Guardamar del Segura, which has taken over the investigation. The Local Police force in San Fulgencio believes that its increase in preventative controls across the municipality to combat drug dealing and trafficking has encouraged people to feel insecure about having drugs in their houses.

Britrun Denia scam in court Former employees of a British-run financial scam have testified the company’s boss knowingly put up to €35 million of client’s pension pots into high-risk investments but without the relevant authorisation. The staff from Continental Wealth Management (CWM), based in Denia until its collapse in 2017, blamed the boss of Darren Kirby for destroying the hopes and dreams of 750 expats around Spain and beyond. It comes as 17 former CWM clients have begun a private prosecution in Denia Court against the company, seeking to press charges of fraud, disloyal administration and falsifying

commercial documents. In what is Spain’s largest ‘legal scrutiny of British-run financial scams’ to date, the former employees – Anthony Downs, Neil Hathaway and Dean Stogsdill – testified that each of the 17 claimants lost their pension pots through ‘high-risk investments’. Court transcripts reveal how the former advisors said moving funds from low-risk to high-risk required client authorisation –but claimed boss Kirby was responsible for obtaining the consents. They added in separate declarations that the 17 claimants would have been aware of the risks and implications – but the claimants maintain they knew

nothing of the toxic investments. Kirby failed to attend the hearing on Monday, February 24. Angela Brooks, who is leading the private prosecution, is hoping the case will set a major ‘precedent’ across Europe. She said: “It’s a disgrace that it’s taken a Spanish lawyer in Spain and a Spanish criminal judge to recognise the wickedness of actions taken by all parties concerned. “There is no precedent for this. It is going to shame all the other jurisdictions throughout Europe and beyond into acknowledging what many offshore advisors have been doing for years. The scale of this case has made the courts sit up and take notice.”

A team from the Urgent Medical Assistance Service and a Basic Life Support (SVB) ambulance also attended the scene. According to sources close to the Torrevieja Hospital, the man was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in serious condition. GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP The pound started the week on the back foot after a tough end to last week. Brexit concerns weighed heavily after the UK stated it would walk away from unsatisfactory negotiations. The EU feels that this will not be the case, but the overall view is that both sides are underestimating the resolve of the other and that there are still significant differences of opinion that will make the negotiation process challenging. A Department for International Trade report on plans for an “ambitious and comprehensive” trade deal with the US did little to assist sterling as the market considered the negligible impact compared with trading with the EU, adding an estimated 0.16% to GDP in 15 years while the economy could shrink by 7.6% in the absence of a trade deal with the EU. The manufacturing PMI was disappointing at 51.7 but sterling made some gains because it was better than the two equivalent US measures. There were also gains early in the week against the US dollar after the Federal Reserve delivered a surprise rate cut. Investors also considered the likelihood of the Bank of England (BoE) following suit and concluded that the cut was unlikely to be as significant as recent cuts, particularly as incoming BoE Governor Andrew Bailey intimated

that his preference was for direct financial support for businesses disrupted by the coronavirus. In a week with rate cuts from across the globe, sterling saw some benefits despite the services PMI missing forecast at 53.2 and ended the week in a slightly better position than it had begun. The euro also made gains against the US dollar when the surprise rate cut was delivered early in the week, but it was overall a relatively quiet week for the central currency. The manufacturing PMI for Spain not stellar but beat forecast at 50.4. There was also further improvement in the German manufacturing PMI, though much of that was down to “deterioration in supplier delivery times”. Euroland’s Services PMI came in lower than the UK equivalent at 51.6 and the euro lost out to sterling. Inflation came in at a provisional 1.2% and the market considered that this was unlikely to have any impact on European Central Bank (ECB) policy. In addition, the ECB doesn’t appear to have the scope to address the coronavirus issue with a major rate cut and the difference in approach may help the euro in the coming weeks, but much depends on a slowdown of the spread of the epidemic for the euro and the currency market as a whole.

Spain fights population drain Government efforts to prevent rural exodus and dwindling and ageing populations in remote inland countryside have been stepped up – the latest project involves a Social Security office data processing centre opening in the province of Soria (Castilla y León). The aim is to provide a high number of meaningful, permanent jobs so that residents in tiny villages do not feel the need to move away to find work – a situation which is largely responsible for 'depopulation', as only those of retirement age and above do not have to worry about professional opportunities within commuting distance. Spain's government wants to start to decentralise some of the country's major operations in order to create job opportunities outside its largest cities. Archiving and documenting centres for its main public institutions, set up in or near very small villages, are one way of helping combat 'depopulation', says energy transition and environment minister Teresa Ribera, who is also one of the country's four deputy presidents. Opening offices outside the typical hubs of Madrid and

News

CostaBlancaPeople 10th - 16th March 2020

Barcelona will also save money, since rent and land costs considerably less in the countryside. Meetings will be held roughly every month and a half to discuss ways of halting 'depopulation' – and will take place in the most atrisk areas, not in Madrid where the central government is based. Lack of job opportunities in isolated, rural areas mean the type of people needed to create

essential services are moving out, causing a vicious circle whereby those of working age are forced to move away due to lack of services, Sra Ribera points out. Some of the items on the draft list of 30 possible actions drawn up include funding 5G and internet coverage in rural parts in order to make it easier for jobs to be created or for people

employed by firms in larger, urban areas to work from home. At present, many telecoms operators are not willing to set up networks like these in deserted parts of Spain, because they would not have enough customers to make it worth their while financially, meaning they would make a loss – but Spain's government is prepared to subsidise these facilities to guarantee their availability. Hubs of Spain's 'open university', the UNED, plus mobile ID-card and passport renewal offices, and Guardia Civil stations are hoped to be set up in remote parts. Schools may have to come later – many of these villages have few or no children, because residents of the right age to have young families tend to move away for work. In some cases, no babies have been born in various rural villages for decades – at the beginning of this month, little Yerai became a local celebrity when he was the first child to be born in the tiny hamlet of Puebla de Pedraza (Segovia province, Castilla y León) since 1977.

Changes at HELP Vega Baja On the 25th February, HELP Vega Baja held its AGM in Casa Cultura, San Miguel and nominations were received and accepted for the Elective Committee. Michele Masson was returned as President and Richard Garland remains in place as Charity Secretary. After 5 years in post, Carole Jones stood down as Treasurer to spend more time travelling and Sue Birchenough was elected to join the committee as Treasurer. Michele presented Carole with a bouquet of flowers on behalf of the charity and spoke of the friendship that had developed throughout the charity with Carole. She also mentioned that Carole would not be leaving the charity entirely and would remain a much-valued volunteer. Members were presented with a copy of the accounts and were delighted to hear that the charity had helped a record number of people throughout 2019 with donations reaching in excess of 74,000 euros. Michele Masson explained “much of our efforts in 2019 were directed towards supporting families who were

affected by the floods. It was amazing how the community rallied around to raise funds and of course how volunteers from the charity went way beyond what anyone could expect and were often found helping families in their homes during the day and dressed up and smiling on an evening attending fundraising events.” Michele continued, “2020 is a special year for the charity as we celebrate 40 years supporting people in the Vega Baja area. We will be holding some fabulous events and we very much hope that people will come along to support us. In particular we have our second golf event in June and we are hoping to have a gala ball later in the year – this is all in addition to our Spring, Christmas Fayres and so much more!” For more information on how you can support HELP Vega Baja, to sign up as a member or become a volunteer, visit www.helpvegabaja.com call 966 723 733 or visit their Facebook Page.

And with that heady fragrance, it's sweet and powerful at the same time. If you're used to tall waisthigh shafts of lavender in the garden, you may wonder whether lavender can work as a houseplant. It is native to our hot, dry climate of the Mediterranean, and so it thrives in warmer climates and is hardy and loves the outdoor life if you want to extend it from indoor to out. Growing Spanish lavender is a good alternative to the more common English lavender if you live in a warmer climate. In appearance, Spanish lavender is similar to other varieties, growing in small shrubs that make great low hedges or bed borders. They have the same silvery-green leaves, but one unique characteristic is how it flowers. The top of each flowering stem grows larger, upright bracts that resemble rabbit ears. Flowers may be purple or pink, depending on the cultivar. Spanish lavender care is similar to other varieties of lavender, although compared to English lavender it can tolerate more heat and doesn’t require any cold to produce flowers. Find a spot with full sun for your Spanish lavender plants or consider growing them in containers; these plants take well to pots. Make sure the soil is light and drains well. Your Spanish lavender will not need a lot of water and will tolerate droughts well. Growing Spanish lavender is a great choice for hot and dry climates, but it also works for containers that can be brought indoors. In addition to adding a lovely fragrance to your beds or home, this lavender will also attract pollinators to your garden.

Full steam ahead for St Patricks Day Parade in Cabo Roig One of the biggest St Patrick’s Day Celebrations in the entire world will take place in Cabo Roig on Sunday afternoon launching the start of three days of Festivities on the Orihuela Costa. According to local police almost 20,000 people attended the parade last year so the 2020 parade, the tenth anniversary of the Cabo Roig event, is set to be even busier. The local committee, made up of a dozen or so business owners from the area, has been hard at work for most of the last year, with, in recent weeks, many of the bars and restaurants running fundraising activities to support the parade. Indeed during this coming week two of the bars will be running events of their own. On Friday evening the formal launch of the festivities will be hosted by the Parade Committee and the Orihuela Town Hall in the Casino situated in Zenia Boulevard where the Grand Marshall, the living GAA legend Séamus Darby, will also be welcomed to the area. With final preparations being made this week around the Cabo Roig strip the bunting team start their work on Monday morning under the direction of Jimmy

Kiernan. We can also expect the council to move in with their street cleaners. This is usually the one time in the year when the area gets its long overdue ‘deep clean’.

On Sunday itself the events get underway at 1pm, with kids’ activities and face-painting while BIG FM will be hosting their live St Patrick’s Day outside broadcast from the stage area in Calle del Mar. There will also be a display of classic cars, motorcycles and scooters during the hour leading up to the start of the parade.

Following traditional speeches and welcomes, also from the stage area, at 2.45 pm, the parade will get underway at 3:00 pm from the Aguamarina Urbanisation in Calle Agua. The route will take it along Calle del Mar to the Medical Centre where it will turn down the front of the strip, into Calle Cielo and then back to the original start point where it will end. The parade will be led by the Torrevieja Pipes and Drums followed by dignitaries and guests including the Grand Marshal together with the mayors of Orihuela and Torrevieja, Emilio Bascuñana and Eduardo Dolón. Snr Dolón is also the Vice President of the Diputación de Alicante. Over 50 members of the Moors and Christians Brotherhoods will also take part in the parade as special guests. Do bear in mind that parking will be at a premium with much of the area closed by police from 1pm so for your own convenience please ensure that to arrive and take up your positions nice and early and then settle down to enjoy an afternoon of fine Irish companionship and entertainment

Palermo is a city of Southern Italy, the capital of both the autonomous region of Sicily and the Metropolitan City of Palermo. The city is noted for its history, culture, architecture and gastronomy, playing an important role throughout much of its existence. The city was founded in 734 BC by the Phoenicians as Ziz. Palermo then became a possession of Carthage, before becoming part of the Roman Republic, the Roman Empire and eventually part of the Byzantine Empire, for over a thousand years. Palermo is Sicily's cultural, economic and touristic capital. It is a city rich in history, culture, art, music and food. Numerous tourists are attracted to the city for its good Mediterranean weather, its renowned gastronomy and restaurants, its Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque churches, palaces and buildings, and its nightlife and music. Palermo is the main Sicilian industrial and commercial center: the main industrial sectors include tourism, services, commerce and agriculture. Palermo currently has an international airport, and a significant underground economy. In fact, for cultural, artistic and economic reasons, Palermo was one of the largest cities in the Mediterranean and is now among the top tourist destinations in both Italy and Europe. History, Italian unification and today The majority of Sicilians preferred independence to the Savoy kingdom; in 1866, Palermo became the seat of a weeklong popular rebellion, which was finally crushed after Martial law was declared. The Italian government blamed anarchists and the Church, specifically the Archbishop of Palermo, for the rebellion and began enacting anti-Sicilian and anti-clerical policies. A new cultural, economic and industrial growth was spurred by several

In the early twentieth century, Palermo expanded outside the old city walls, mostly to the north along the new boulevards Via Roma, Via Dante, Via Notarbartolo, and Viale della LibertĂ . These roads would soon boast a huge number of villas in the Art Nouveau style. Many of these were designed by the famous architect Ernesto Basile. The Grand Hotel Villa Igiea, designed by Ernesto Basile for the Florio family, is a good example of Palermitan Art Nouveau. The huge Teatro Massimo was designed in the same period by Giovan Battista Filippo Basile, and built by the Rutelli & MachĂŹ building firm of the industrial and old Rutelli Italian family in Palermo, and was opened in 1897. During the Second World War, Palermo was untouched until the Allied invasion of Sicily in 1943. In July, the harbour and the surrounding quarters were heavily bombed by the Allied forces and were all but destroyed. In 1946 the city was declared the seat of the Regional Parliament, as capital of a Special Status Region (1947) whose seat is in the Palazzo dei Normanni. A theme in the city's modern age has been the struggle against the Mafia, Red Brigades and outlaws such as Salvatore Giuliano, who controlled the neighbouring area of Montelepre. The Italian state effectively has had to share control of the territory, economically and administratively, with the Mafia. The so-called "Sack of Palermo" is one of the major visible faces of the problem. The term is used to indicate the speculative building practices that have filled the city with poor buildings, mainly during the 1950s to the 1980s. The reduced importance of agriculture in the Sicilian

economy has led to a massive migration to the cities, especially Palermo, which swelled in size, leading to rapid expansion towards the north. The regulatory plans for expansion was largely ignored in the boom. New parts of town appeared almost out of nowhere, but without parks, schools, public buildings, proper roads and the other amenities that characterise a modern city. Climate Palermo experiences a hot-summer Mediterranean climate that is mild with moderate seasonality. Summers are hot and dry due to the domination of subtropical high pressure system, while winters experience moderate temperatures and changeable, rainy weather due to the polar front. Temperatures in autumn and spring are usually mild. Palermo is one of the warmest cities in Europe Economy Being Sicily's administrative capital, Palermo is a centre for much of the region's finance, tourism and commerce. The city currently hosts an international airport, and Palermo's economic growth over the years has brought the opening of many new businesses. The economy mainly relies on tourism and services, but also has commerce, shipbuilding and agriculture. The city, however, still has high unemployment levels, high corruption and a significant black market empire (Palermo being the home of the Sicilian Mafia). Even though the city still suffers from widespread corruption, inefficient bureaucracy and organized crime, the level of crime in Palermo has gone down dramatically, unemployment has been decreasing and many new, profitable opportunities for growth (especially regarding tourism) have been introduced, making the city safer and better to live in.

He wants me back now I am slim My partner told me he was leaving, and it was my fault because I was overweight. We had lived together for 7 years and have a son 6. I suffered from post natal depression after the birth of my son and began to eat to cope. Although my son still saw his Dad he developed a stutter, and I blame the break up. I managed to get myself together and joined a gym and went to a slimming class, and lost four stone. My son is receiving counselling. My partner now wants me back, and had the nerve to say that I now have the body that he wanted me to have! I am still hurt by the way he treated me, the flippant way in which he just cast me aside. It took me a long time to get over him, and I am not sure if I still love him anymore, but his mother wants us to get back together. She is putting pressure on me to make up with my ex and says I should do it for the sake of our son, but my cousin says she saw my ex with another woman only last week, so I already know he’s seeing someone else. I have been seeing a nice guy who my son loves, and my boy’s stuttering is improving. I also have a great job which I enjoy - my ex never wanted me to work, so life is good now. But I am feeling pressured and want to run away from it all. Don’t bow to pressure, and stick to your guns. Your ex has been incredibly shallow and his wanting to come back to you now that you are slim is appalling. What’s to stop him leaving you again when something else about your appearance does not suit him? It’s also worrying that you say your ex did not want you to work – he sounds very manipulative. You’d be much better off with your new man, and it already sounds as though your son is doing well in the circumstances. Be brave and calmly tell everyone that you will not be getting back with your ex. WRITE TO SARA IN CONFIDENCE. A PSEUDONYM WILL BE USED IF YOU WISH. International singers flock to Spanish festival Music-lovers have just been given the full line-up for one of Madrid's best-loved festivals – the Noches del Botánico (Botanic Nights), with massive concerts by international stars almost every evening from 17th June to 29th July. Held in the Royal Botanical Gardens in the huge student complex of the Complutense known as 'University City', the shows come at a time when Madrid is starting to empty as workers take their summer breaks and head for coast and country. This means hotels are likely to be more available and could be cheaper, and regular transport links mean it is not difficult to get there from almost anywhere in the country – even the Costas. Star of the show in the first month is Dido, whose eccentric, introspective style of electro-pop – often catchy and sometimes trance-like – first appeared on the scene when her Thank You was used as backing music for rapper Eminem's Stan, and who has never stopped churning out albums. The 48year-old Londoner born on

Christmas Day – whose brother Rollo Armstrong founded the band Faithless – hits the stage on 18th June. Others in the same month are Estrella and Kiki Morente, Zucchero (Patáx as support act), Pat Metheny Side-Eye, Víctor Manuel (supported by Nando Agueros), Andrés Suárez (with

Isma Romero-), Wilco, Los Secretos (with Twanguero), and LP. Bigger names are on the cards for July – starting with Tom Jones on the first day of the month, Belle and Sebastian and Norfolk folk-pop legend Beth Orton on 4th July, Crowded House on 9th July, Jessie J on 21st July,

Sénégalese soul singer Youssou N'Dour on 23rd July, Herbie Hancock on 27th July, and the Gypsy Kings on 29th July. Remaining acts in July are Of Monsters and Men, Smith & Thell, Rufus Wainwright, Cat Power, Agnes Obel, John Grant, Cècile McLorin Salvant, Tigran Hamasyan Trio, Laredo, Tomatito with Duquende, Israel Fernández and Antonio Reyes, Álex Conde, Diego El Cigala, Flor Amargo, Woodkid, Awir León, George Thorogood & The Destroyers, Vintage Trouble, Carlinhos Brown, Cimafunk, Imelda May, Nikki Hill, Zenet, Javier Ruibal, Vicente García, Tony Succar, Unity, Yann Tierssen, J J Machuca, Little Dragon, The Cinematic Orchestra, Cymande, Asaf Avidan, Mayra Andrade, Quique González, Egon Soda, Graham Nash, Kiko Veneno, Óscar d'León, Eva Ayllón, and La Barbería del Sur. Last year, its fourth edition, the festival brought in over 90,000 fans to its 34 concerts, many of which were sold out months before.

But, it explained, the Spanish meteorological service – Agencia Estatal de Meteorología (AEMET) – got their name in first when they named the weather system sweeping in off the Atlantic last Thursday. AEMET forms part of the south-west Europe storm naming group, along with the Met Storm Jorge Office. The Met Office said: “It is storms in 2015. The UK system works in partnership with Met Office’s Irish and Dutch equivalent and each of the three nations can declare a named storm. The criteria is when the impending weather system has the potential to cause an amber or red weather warning. But they can also be declared in other circumstances – specifically if heavy rain could lead to flooding. The list of storm names is complied every year by the three national weather services, taking into account thousands of suggestions from the public and “some of the more popular names and names that reflect the diversity of Britain, Ireland and the Netherlands”. Despite the panEuropean system that led to Jorge elbowing out Ellen, there is still some capacity for confusion when western Europe is influenced by the remnants of North Atlantic hurricanes which are named in a totally separate system by the United States’ National Weather Service. If and when Storm Ellen arrives, it will be followed by Francis and, if it is an exceptionally stormy year, we could get all the way to Storm Willow. In common with US practice, the letters Q, U, X, Y and Z are not used to name storms.

Madrid to become home to Europe’s tallest skyscraper The urban development in Madrid known as "Madrid Nuevo Norte", and formerly known as "Operación Chamartín", is one of the most ambitious developments currently planned in Europe. Details of the plan for this new area in Madrid show that it exceeds a surface area of 3,000,000m2, while extending more than 5 kilometres in length in the north-south direction, from the surroundings of Plaza de Castilla towards the area of El Pardo. In addition to housing, green areas and commercial spaces, the plan includes the construction of several skyscrapers, one of which could reach a breathtaking 330 metres in height, including an antenna for a final height boost. According to the developer of the project, Distrito Castellana Norte, there are just over 100

skyscrapers in the world that exceed 300 metres in height. Despite the fact that most of them are located in Asia, they are also found in the USA and Russia. Within the Europe, the current reference is The Shard, a tower located in London's financial district that is 309.7 metres high, although with these plans, it will not hold the title for long. In Warsaw, the capital of Poland, the famous architectural firm led by Norman Foster is currently building "Varso", a skyscraper that will be 230 metres high and a giant antenna that will raise its total height to 310 metres, still not enough to surpass Madrid's plans. Another titanic project that is planned in Europe is Bestseller Tower, a 320metre skyscraper in Jutland (Denmark) that could be inaugurated in 2023.

Therefore, and if the current plans are fulfilled, the tower to be built in this development in Madrid will become the tallest in Europe and will be almost 100 metres higher than the current skyscrapers located in the north of the city. European However, skyscrapers are still far behind their Asian counterparts. For ten years now, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai has had the honour of being the tallest building in the world, standing over 800 metres high. However, this year will see the completion of the Dubai Creek Tower, a tower designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava which, at over 1,300 metres, will become the world's benchmark. It will be one kilometre higher than the one planned in Madrid.

BUYING? HOW BIG SHOULD YOUR HOME BE? Rebecca Serwotka Rebecca Serwotka - Your favourite local property expert, of Inmobiliaria Real Estate Agents in Ciudad Quesada & published author of “Moving Forward - 25 Essential Rules For Buying & Selling Real Estate Without Going Crazy.” Request your FREE copy today!Featured on Best Buy Spain - Property TV.

Whether you choose a property to live in permanently, or you’re in the market for a holiday home, size is a factor on deciding which home you’re most suited for. Bigger doesn’t always mean better, but it’s finding that perfect balance that’s neither too big, nor too small. To help you decide, ask yourself these four questions to determine how much space you really need:

1

Is this my forever home? If you’re relocating to Spain, then you need to figure out if this will be your “stepping stone” home for right now, or somewhere for you to grow old in. Everyone feels they should be looking for their forever home, when really they may not need something so big for “right now.”

2

What are my priorities? If you’re thinking of buying a home with a guest bedroom, to allow you to accommodate your long list of friends and family whilst on their holidays, then you need to focus more on your own needs, and not so much on theirs. They will still enjoy

visiting you, even if they have to sleep on a bed settee!

3

How spacious does the home feel? Even if the home doesn’t have a big footprint, it can feel more spacious if it is open plan. Even large homes can feel cramped if they’re dark, or have an impractical layout.

4

Mortgage or cash? If you’re contemplating whether to buy a larger home with a mortgage, take a look at what your finances will look like, in a few years time. How valuable does that guest bedroom look to you now? So, stop focusing on the amount of rooms in the home, and start paying attention to the actual size of the rooms you’ll be spending most of your time in! Happy House Hunting!

Interest rate fall makes Spanish mortgages cheaper The Eurozone interest rate has marked its fourth anniversary in negative figures, meaning mortgages in Spain and other common-currency nations will continue to be low – in fact, the closing figure for February was the second-lowest in 14 months. Spanish variablerate mortgages are set according to the euro interest figure, or Euríbor, and unlike in the UK, are re-valued annually, not constantly; this means if the interest rate shows signs of possibly rising, homeowners have up to 12 months to plan and work out whether a fixed-rate loan would save them money. It also means no fluctuation in monthly repayments, so a sudden, one-off spike in the Euríbor will not mean an unexpectedly expensive month. For this reason, and especially as a fee applies to set up fixed-rate loans, the vast majority of mortgages in Spain are variable rate. Luckily, in the past, the Euríbor has not changed dramatically and suddenly from year to year

and any rises have been very gradual, meaning rearranging an existing mortgage has not had to be an emergency. The Euríbor first dropped below zero in February 2016, something never seen before

and which led some homeowners to question whether they would actually get a rebate on their repayments, or pay less than the capital due – but the answer was, of course not. Banks tend to set their mortgage interest rates at the Euríbor plus a given percentage, which means their cost has nearly halved since 2007 and

2008 when they were at their peak. At the beginning of 2019, it was feared the honeymoon may be over when the Euríbor started creeping above zero again, but at its highest since then it only reached -0.082%, in March, after which it started to drop, falling once again into negative in June. And compared with late 2007 and early 2008 rates of around 5.3 percent - or even the 2 percent to 3 percent after 2002 when Spain first adopted the euro – few homeowners were truly panicking. The Euríbor in the last 14 months, from January 2019 to February 2020 inclusive, was at its lowest in August when it dropped to -0.187 percent, and a steady climb started to reverse again in December, when 2019 closed with a rate of -0.135 percent. As at the end of February, the Eurozone interest rate was -0.179 percent, and no plans are afoot for it to rise greatly any time soon.

Sexual assault laws closer to reform Spain has gone a step further in protecting women out in public: hassling or harassing women in the street, in bars, at private parties or anywhere else will now be considered a 'minor' criminal offence of 'gender violence' and attract fines, house arrest or community service. The Spanish Cabinet has taken the first step toward approving new legislation on sexual violence. The new law, which has been prepared by the Equality Ministry, will see the controversial offense of “sexual abuse” disappear, and will focus in particular on the issue of consent, which is defined as a free manifestation of the will to “participate in the act,” ministry sources explained. The draft law was presented by the equality minister, Unidas Podemos politician Irene Montero. The legislation covers women who are of or above the age of consent in Spain, 16 years old, and who have suffered sexual violence, female genital mutilation, forced marriage or sex trafficking. One-off incidents of unwanted sexual comments, groping, or persistently and insistently hassling a woman and refusing to take 'no' for an answer – or 'sexual or sexist expressions, behaviours or propositions' where this makes women feel 'intimidated, humiliated, unsafe or generally unsettled', or where it is reasonably considered that it could even if it does not, whether or not the perpetrator knows her, could lead to fines of several hundred euros, a month's house arrest and being electronically tagged, a month's community service, and an injunction preventing the

accused from approaching the female in question. Although it was already, technically, an offence to do this, there was no real legal framework for it and few cases would have ended in punishment. The problem still exists of how to identify the men responsible where it is in the street and they are complete strangers, however. But it is hoped that the threat of a fine or house arrest could act as a much-needed deterrent. Sexual harassment of this nature is already a criminal offence in several EU countries, including France and The Netherlands, attracting fines of between

€90 and €750. After both countries made it an offence in 2018, European Parliament recommended all other member States followed suit after finding out that at least 55% of women in Europe had been on the receiving end of this treatment and that it was rarely, if ever, reported. Now that it is enshrined in law, it will require men who habitually indulged in this type of conduct, considering it to be 'just lads mucking about', to be more aware of their behaviour and understand the difference between friendly chat with a woman he is interested in and for whom it is clearly mutual, and making

indecent propositions to a female who does not appreciate them at all. Education and equality The comprehensive law pays particular attention to the prevention of sexual offenses, and includes education on equality and diversity in all levels of the education system. The draft legislation sets out a time frame of a year to decide whether gender violence courts should judge a particular case or if they should be passed to other specialized tribunals, ministry sources added. Until now in Spain, a sexual assault –

i.e. rape – had to include an element of violence or intimidation. If the courts could not find evidence of such factors, the offense would be classed as sexual abuse. This has caused controversy in recent years in Spanish court cases, not least during the first trial of the infamous Running of the Bulls case, where a group of Spanish men were found guilty of the lesser charge of sexual abuse of an 18year-old despite a wealth of evidence against them. That decision was later overturned by a higher court. Under the new law, the focus will be on consent. Sexual assault will be classed as “any act against the sexual freedom of another person without their consent.” Sexual assault will be punished with prison terms of one to four years, compared to the current sentence of one to five years or a fine. The Criminal Code reforms will see rape carry prison terms of four to 10 years, compared to the current four to 12. New aggravating circumstances will include cases where the perpetrator is the partner or former partner of the victim, or used substances to drug the victim. Other factors will include if the sexual assault is carried out by a group, if there is degrading treatment, extreme violence, or if the victim is particularly vulnerable. After having been approved by the Cabinet in its first reading today, the legislation will now be subject to a number of reports from bodies such as the CGPJ legal watchdog, before it is sent back to the Cabinet and then passed to the Congress of Deputies for debate.

Mother´s Day In the UK, Mother’s Day is formally known as Mothering Sunday. It takes place on the fourth Sunday of Lent and was traditionally a day on which Christians were encouraged to visit their “mother church”. During the 16th century, people returned to their mother church for a service which was held on Laetare Sunday; in this context, one's "mother church" was either the church where one was baptised, the local parish church, or the nearest cathedral (the latter being the mother church of all the parish churches in a diocese). Anyone who did this was commonly said to have gone "a-mothering", although whether this term preceded the observance of Mothering Sunday is unclear. In later times, Mothering Sunday became a day when domestic servants were given a day off to visit their mother church, usually with their own mothers and other family members.[2] It was often the only time that entire families could gather together, since on other days they were prevented from doing so by conflicting working hours. Therefore, over the years, the day has become better-associated with family reunions and children working away from home would acknowledge the day by returning home to pay a visit to their mothers.

However, now it’s more akin to the US celebration and its religious roots are have been usurped by promotional campaigns encouraging children to shower their mothers with flowers, cards and gifts. The American Mother’s Day does not have religious connotations and was formally established by President Wilson in 1914 after a campaign was launched by an American woman from West Virginia named Anna Jarvis, whose own mother died in May. It has since been held every year on the second Sunday of May in the US and several other countries, including Australia. Dia de la Madre Mother’s Day in Spain is celebrated on the first Sunday of May. In Spain, Mother's Day dates back to 1644 and was created in honour of the national festival of the Virgen of Immaculate Conception. Therefore, Mother's Day in Spain was celebrated on the 8th December until it was moved to the spring in 1965. It was moved to the first Sunday in May for religious reasons. May is the month of the Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus. Despite this, nowadays Mother's Day has a more

“Uh?” Gus came awake slowly. “What... what’s going on?” Then he realised. Intruder! Gus and Vikki had lived in the isolated bungalow long enough to get the garden in some sort of order. They had planted vegetables and flowers in their well-fertilized flowerbeds, a sight to be seen on a sunny day deep in the country. They had heard stories of sheep stealers and burglars, and even thefts of growing plants and garden

furniture, but had paid little attention to them, except Gus had bought himself a double-barrelled shotgun, just to feel confident. Sleepily, he staggered out of bed. He was wearing just his pyjamas, but the night was not cold. Without turning on the lights, he retrieved his shotgun from its place high in the wardrobe, before setting off, barefoot downstairs. “Be careful!” Vikki pleaded. “Shhh ...!” came back the reply. He made his way carefully downstairs, making sure of his footing in the darkness, eager not to discharge the gun or fall. He could hear sounds outside, somewhere near the kitchen window. Very

commercial character to it (because gifts are usually given) and has

been popularised. As in most other countries around the world, Mothers Day in Spain is observed throughout the country to honour all mothers. Shops all over Spain decorate their windows with displays of chocolates, flowers, greeting cards and many other presents for Mother’s Day. However, the handmade gifts and cards are more appreciated. Schools encourage the children to express their gratitude and love for their mothers , both in pictures and words but Spain does not have the same card-giving culture that's popular in English-speaking countries such as the United States and United Kingdom.

THE INTRUDER by Gerald R Wright slowly and quietly, he turned the kitchen door key in the lock, then he pressed the door handle down; slowly and quietly. He would catch the intruder. Possibly make a Citizen’s Arrest. Outside, it was dark, who could possibly be out there in the darkness? Once again he heard the sounds. It all happened so quickly. Later he would sit down and play it through his mind in slow motion. He pulled open the door and stepped onto the patio. “Stay where you are!” he shouted, “or I’ll fire!” There was a sudden movement to his left. Gus stepped forward and as he did so, he stumbled across the doorstep. In his efforts to regain his balance, his fingers tightened on the two triggers of the shotgun. The running footsteps continued even as the gun roared, emptying both

cartridges into the blackness. As he gained his composure, he heard a cry of “Aaaagh!” from the darkness. The running feet did not stop. Gus decided not to venture further. He had hit something but the intruder had escaped. He relocked the door and returned to Vikki whose face wore a look of terror. “We’ll look later when it gets light,” Gus decided. When it was light, they both went, in trepidation, into the rear garden. The flower beds had been devastated and in the dew-covered grass, they saw the trail of what they realised was a small deer, which disappeared through a gap in the broken down hedge. On the lawn, under the large tree at the edge of the field beyond their hedge, they found two dead crows, both full of lead shot. “Time to fix the back fence, I think,” Gus said. They looked at each other and broke into laughter.

'This next James Bond film is going to be my last': Daniel Craig confirms he will NOT return as the iconic secret agent... following claims he 'isn't ready' to walk away. The actor will return in No Time To Die, his fifth Bond movie, in November but he insists he will not match Sean Connery by playing Bond six times. Shatner would never play Star Trek's Captain Kirk again In a world where remakes and reboots have monopolised the movie business, the notion of William Shatner returning as (the late) Captain James Tiberius Kirk really isn't so outlandish, right? The oft-prickly 88-year-old actor has affirmed that never again will he play the captain of the USS Enterprise. In the wake of the new Star Trek spin-off series Picard, in which Sir Patrick Stewart has reprised his role as Jean-Luc Picard, a fan asked Shatner if a 'Kirk' series could be in

the offing. The answer was swift and decisive. “No,” he replied. “I think Kirk’s story is pretty well played out at this point.” He then elaborated: “What was any different about my statement on Kirk that I haven’t said before? I don’t do cameos (that one stretches back to 2008 & JJ) Kirk’s story is well told out of any other captain’s story. Kirk died in Generations. What is really left? Adventures in the ribbon?”

Well, that's the fans well and truly told, and while Picard has left some critics slightly frustrated with its pace (though many have also loved it), the franchise appears to be making moves in the right direction following a hiatus. The J.J. Abrams' produced movies stalled after the third, Star Trek Beyond, tanked at the box office. Word of a Quentin Tarantino-penned R-rated 'Pulp Fiction in space' Star Trek movie has since proved somewhat

fanciful, but now Fargo showrunner Noah Hawley is on board to develop a new Star Trek feature film. It's thought Hawley will also be looking at a new cast to take over too, though as yet, there's no time frame in place.

Stroke prevention with food Medical experts have weighed in on claims that fruit, vegetables and dairy could help prevent strokes. The verdict comes after a new study, conducted by a European team of researchers, claimed that a high intake of fruit, vegetables and dairy were linked with a lower risk of ischaemic stroke. The research, which was funded inpart by the UK Medical Research Council, involved over 400,000 participants from a host of European countries including the UK and Spain. The participants were followed for around 13 years and the results suggested that a high consumption of certain foods could reduce the risk of suffering a stroke by up to 23 per cent. Ischaemic strokes are the most common type of stroke, experienced by around 85 percent of sufferers. They are the result of a blood clot which blocks the flow of blood and oxygen to the brain. According to the NHS, these blood clots typically form in areas where the arteries have been narrowed or blocked over time by fatty deposits, though the natural process of aging can also lead to this narrowing. Smoking, high blood pressure and diabetes are said to "dangerously speed up this process." What was the new research? The study follows the ongoing European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) which is coordinated by researchers in

London and France. Potentially one of the largest cohort studies in the world, EPIC is designed to follow participants over time and investigate the link between an exposure (such as diet) and the effect on a health outcome (such as stroke). The research involved 418,329 adults, who had an average age of 50, who had been recruited to EPIC between 1992 and 2000 from a variety of European countries including Spain, the UK and Germany. These participants completed an assessment of body measurement and physical activity, as well as diet and lifestyle questionnaires. The questionnaires, which were conducted at recruitment, asked about dietary intake over the past year. Researchers were primarily interested in investigating the impact on strokes - both ischaemic and haemorrhagic (caused by a bleed).

What were the results? Over an average 13 years of followup there were 4,281 new cases of stroke - which affected around 1 per cent of participants. The majority of these were ischaemic (66 percent) whilst haemorrhagic strokes

comprised around 33 per cent of cases. The researchers found that 200g higher fruit and vegetable intake per day decreased stroke risk by 13 per cent, similarly to a 30g higher cheese intake per day which decreased risk by 12 percent. The study also uncovered that a 200g higher milk intake per day decreased risk by 5 per cent, whilst a

100g higher yoghurt intake per day decreased risk by 9 percent. The most beneficial decrease is considered to be from a 10g higher fibre intake per day, which lowers risk of stroke by 23 percent. The research however found that eating 20g more eggs per day was in fact linked with a 25 percent increased risk of haemorrhagic stroke. Following the results, the researchers concluded that a high intake of fruit and vegetables, dietary fibre and dairy was linked with lower risk of ischaemic stroke - whilst higher egg consumption increased the risk of haemorrhagic stroke. Conclusion The NHS said the research was a "valuable study" which benefits from a "large number of participants, giving wide representation across European countries." It noted that the findings "support

general understanding" that a higher consumption of fruit, vegetable and fibre is beneficial to cardiovascular health, including reducing the risk of the most common stroke. The health service however reminded that "cohort studies can never prove direct cause and effect," commenting that questionnaires "can never be entirely accurate" and that other factors are "likely to contribute to an individual's overall risk of stroke." It supports this claim by explaining that "even though higher intake of [some] foods did reduce risk," the "absolute reductions are fairly small," at around 1 or 2 fewer strokes per 1,000 people over 10 years. The NHS also said that the researchers did not provide detailed information on the types of food consume, for example whether dairy was low fat or full fat. "It's perhaps not sensible to tell people they can eat as much cheese as they like," said the health provider, "because cheese is often high in saturated fat, which can be harmful to cardiovascular health." It advised "using some caution with the results" for dairy and egg, adding that caution also needs to be taken before concluding that a high intake of red or processed meat is now "safe." "Nevertheless, the study supports what we already know about the benefits of a health diet which is high in fruit, vegetables and dietary fibre," explained the NHS.

Veggies beware Being a vegetarian is a personal choice many people make. But in a world filled with processed foods with long ingredient lists that look more like an advanced chemistry problem than actual food, it can be hard to know what we're actually consuming. Here are some surprising foods you thought were vegetarian but really aren’t...

Tortillas - Some contain lard to make it more buttery, so be sure to ask your restaurant and check the package. French Fries - Fries are by definition vegetarian, but many restaurants use animal fat to fry them. McDonald's is just one example, and they've even been sued over it. However, the chain's fries are already vegetarian in other parts of the world. White Sugar - Many sugar companies use charred animal bones to whiten their sugar. However, there are many companies out there that deliver vegan options. Just do a bit of googling and choose a brand you trust. Wines & Beer - Many brands of beer and wine, particularly British

Worcester Sauce - This fermented condiment has anchovies in it. French Onion Soup - Though it sounds vegetarian, French onion soup is traditionally made with beef broth. Non-Fat Yogurt - Many fat-free varieties contain gelatine - an ingredient derived from various animal body parts to help retain its texture. Figs - Figs are arguably non-vegetarian as they contain at least one dead female wasp inside. It's a natural part of the fruit's pollination. No actual parts of the insect can be found inside as an enzyme completely breaks it down and transforms it into protein. Marshmallow - Non-vegetarian figs Marshmallows also contain gelatine. But gelatine-free ones, use isinglass, a gelatine varieties are available for those derived from a certain freshwater unwilling to forego s'mores. fish.

Refried beans - Many traditional Mexican restaurants make their refried beans with lard. Baked Beans - Most recipes, though not all, of baked beans call for bacon or ham hock. Heinz Beanz is both vegetarian and vegan, for example. Caesar Salad - Caesar salad dressing generally includes anchovies. Parmesan cheese - Parmesan cheese, as well as many other cheeses, is made with rennet, which are enzymes extracted from the stomachs of ruminant mammals. Foods labeled as hearthealthy - Many foods that say "heart-healthy," such as orange juice, breakfast cereals, and milk, contain Omega-3, derived from fish. Split pea soup - The traditional recipe starts with ham hock, but vegetarian options exist. Ask your server if you don't consume animal products. Pesto – Is traditionally made with parmesan cheese (see above). Red coloured sweets Brightly-colored foods, particularly candy or drinks, contain a dye made from crushed beetle shells, generally labeled as carmine, crimson lake, cochineal, or natural red #4.

Soup A chunky soup loaded with vegetables and beans or legumes will tick off both nourishment and satiety, and is a great way of getting one or two of your five-a-day. Skip the side of bread when having soup as a snack. Spicy chickpeas Prepare some spicy roasted chickpeas and pop in a sandwich bag for a great on-the-go snack. Chickpeas are high in dietary fibre, which is important for weight loss as it is digested slowly by the body helping to keep you fuller for longer. To prepare, toss chickpeas with olive oil, and season to taste with salt, garlic salt, and cayenne pepper. Spread on a baking sheet, and bake for 30 to 40 minutes, until browned and crunchy.

Hard-boiled, poached or scrambled egg Eggs are incredibly filling and one of the best snacks for taming a belly growl. They are a fantastic source of protein and an array of vitamins and minerals. Boiledeggs can be prepared in advance and kept in the fridge for when hunger strikes. Smoothie Smoothies provide a great option for when you're really hungry, as the volume fills up the stomach giving that sense of fullness. Adding a protein component such as ground flaxseed or unsweetened yoghurt will ensure that you remain satisfied until your next meal. Raw nuts Rich in protein, fibre and fat, the combination of which provides your body with sustained energy, while keeping your appetite satisfied. A portion of nuts is around 30g (two tablespoons). Choose the unsalted variety, and avoid having the whole bag open on the desk as this can easily lead to mindless eating. Popcorn Popcorn is a slow energy-release wholegrain high in fibre and low in calories, making it a weight-loss friendly alternative to crisps that's simple to prepare at home. Put in a snap-lock sandwich bag and flavour with some dried Italian herbs and a little parmesan for a pizza-like flavour.

Specsavers Ópticas Launches National Campaign For Guide Dogs Foundation Specsavers Ópticastoday launches a national fundraising campaign in aid ofONCE Foundation for Guide Dogs (FOPG), to help support vulnerable people with severe vision loss. Naming ONCE as its official charity, the opticians has pledged to raise more than 5,000€ over the next year, to support the important work of the FOPG and the services it provides. Thefoundationruns the only centre which breeds and trains guide dogs for blind people, or those with serious vision loss, to help them gain better mobility andmore independence. Jorge Martínez de Lizarduy Araico, of

Specsavers Opticas, says:‘As an opticians, we’re passionate about improving the lives of people with sight loss, so we’ll be doing all we can throughout the year to raise funds for the foundation. ‘Vision loss can be incredibly isolating, leading to feelings of loneliness and depression. However, thanks to the foundation and the work they do, people can gain a new sense of independence and confidence. ‘It’s equally important that people take a proactive approach to their eye health. Regular eye tests and early detection, followed by timely

intervention and management of eye health conditions, could help save your sight.' Funds will be raised across the nine Specsavers Ópticas stores in Spain throughout 2020 in many different ways. The stores will also be sharing information with their customers about FOPG and the support they offer blind people in Spain, by providing more than 130 guide dogs to those in need each year. For her part, the Managing Director of FOPG, Maria Jesús Varela, highlighted the importance of this collaboration with Specsavers Ópticas, an international company committed to eye health, which is showing its support to those people who require the help of a guide dog to improve their mobility, by launching this fundraising campaign. She says it is an excellent example of corporate social responsibility in action and shows the way for many other companies who want to support their communities and those less fortunate than themselves. For FOPG, the agreement is not only important in terms of fundraising to support their important work, but also the chance to shine a light on the service they are offering, the role of guide dogs and the importance of offering the same rights of access for all people in society.

About FOPG Fundación ONCE del PerroGuía (FOPG) is a welfare foundation created by ONCE in 1990 with the purpose of breeding and training guide dogs for people with severe blindness or visual impairment. It provides its services to people with visual disabilities throughout Spain, by virtue of the collaboration with ONCE itself, which offers the guide dog as a free social service for people affiliated with that organisation who request it and are eligible. The FOPG is a permanent member of the International Guide Dog Federation (IGDF), the European Guide Dog Federation (EGDF) and the European Breeding Network, a working group specialised in breeding and genetic improvement of guide dogs in Europe and the USA. The foundation breeds its own dogs and takes responsibility for the entire process of training the guide dog and pairing it with the most suitable applicant. They also train the new owner how to make best use of this mobility aid and supports both the owner and the dog throughout its life as a guide dog.

BUSINESS PROFILE

The work of this foundation is essential to increase the autonomy of blind people or those with a serious visual disability. Changing from walking with a cane to doing it with a guide dog represents a huge improvement in their mobility, speed and security of their movements and allows them to integrate with society in a much more meaningful way. New Spring hair trends These hair trends are predicted to Sleek hair is all set to make a huge be big for Spring 2020, so now comeback and not necessarily the you can get a head start on mastering them. According to top hairstylists, a large trend for Spring is people really focusing on the health of their hair. With hair and makeup, it appears people are going back to basics with having a really beautiful foundation and the hair is the foundation to all great hairstyles. Paying attention to repairing your hair and treating it will be a huge focus for 2020 because everyone got really excited last year with tutorials, heat-styling and colouring in different ways and they really their toll on our tresses. It might be time to ditch the extensions as mid-length styles are back claim the hair guru’s. Kiera Knightly -short hair style

super-long Cher vibe, celeb hairstylists are seeing a lot of shorter references to sleek hair - really short bobs, super '90s ones especially. If you're feeling bold, 2020 is the perfect time to go for the big chop according to experts who are starting to see shorter hair come back, with lots of texture, like when Kate Moss cut her hair in the '90s and everyone replicated her messy crop. Short hair on women is always dramatic and eyecatching and in 2020 there are different lengths to play with. Either the short and sleek bob, or the more textured crop. So be brave and go sleek or short, but whichever you chose make sure you are taking care of your locks.

FEATHERS - FINDING THEM & COLOUR MEANINGS Finding a white feather in an unusual place is known as the 'calling cards of the angels'. When a feather literally falls at your feet, many believe that the angels are sending you the feather as confirmation that they've heard your prayers which will be answered within divine timing. People through history from different cultures such as The Native Americans, Aborigines and Celtics have believed for centuries that there are mystical and magical meanings behind birds and feathers. Native Americans for example used to make their headdresses with feathers and when worn, they were seen as a sacred connection to the divine. The reason for this was, when you look at a feather, there is a shaft running up the centre of the feather which looks like a stalk. The idea is that the relevant person's prayers go up through the hollow shaft of the stalk to God, and his blessings are then sent down through the hollow shaft and used as a kind of channel (connection to the divine). I'm asked a lot about different coloured feathers as not each feather you'll find will be white.

So I have written a short description below. I hope you find it useful. White White feathers are the most common, and certainly the colour that most people believe are linked to the angels and spirit. Finding one means that the angels are letting you know your loved one in the afterlife is safe, and at peace. They also stand for protection, strength and hope. Pink The colour pink denotes love, so this is what finding a pink feather means. Pure love is descending from above, wrapping you in unconditional love, harmony, faith and inspiration. Red Finding a red feather represents courage, good fortune, security, passion and strength. Blue The colour blue represents Communication, connection to Spirit/Psychic Awareness, Archangel Michael, Peace and Inspiration. Also means that you may need to listen! Purple A purple feather denotes all things spiritual, Universal Consciousness, Heightened

spiritual growth. Yellow Joy, cheerfulness, new knowledge, mental alertness. The sun about to come out in your life. Green Finding a green feather is a very lucky omen! Promoting prosperity, inner growth, health, success, Mother Nature, animals. Black Mystical wisdom, protection, a new adventure, warning to be more aware of people around you, putting something into action, letting go of past hurts, moving on, forgiveness, letting go. Follow up improves weight loss in gastric balloon patients According to the results of several published studies, the average weight loss of patients that have undergone the gastric balloon technique is between 15 and 20 kg. “However,” points out Doctor Juan Antonio Casellas, endoscopist with the Obesity Units at Quirónsalud Alicante, Torrevieja and Valencia, “the results will always depend on the patient’s attitude, and will be better if there is a protocol for monitoring by a multidisciplinary team, made up of a psychologist, an endocrinologist, a nutritionist, and endoscopic physician and a bariatric surgeon.” The balloon technique consists of implanting a latex sphere filled with saline solution into the stomach. This reduces the stomach’s motility, lowering the time it takes to empty after food ingestion, and causing, in most cases, an early feeling of satiety during meals. The price of the gastric balloon varies, depending on whether the technique is performed for 6 or 12 months. The gastric balloon is mainly aimed at patients with excess weight or typeI obesity who have previously attempted to lose weight through diet and exercise with poor results. The estimated weight loss at 6 months after the application of this technique is between 14 and 17 kg. 80% of this weight loss takes place during the first three months after the intervention, since, as Doctor Casellas indicates, “the gastric balloon loses its effectiveness after that time.” This technique is contra-indicated for patients with digestive pathologies, such as a severe oesophagitis, a gastric ulcer or a large hernia, and there are

contra-indications derived from the patient him- or herself, such as psychiatric disorders, active drug addiction, and endocrine causes of obesity. “There are also some relative contra-indications, such as taking anticoagulants, which the endoscopic specialist will evaluate in each case,” added Doctor Casellas. How a Gastric Balloon is Placed The procedure for inserting a gastric balloon always starts with an evaluation by both a psychologist and an endocrinologist, and if it is agreed that the patient would suit the gastric balloon procedure, the next step would be a consultation with the endoscopist physician, who will explain how the whole process will be carried out, and perform a diagnostic gastroscopy to rule out any potential problems. As Doctor Juan Antonio Casellas explains, “the gastric balloon is a very safe treatment with very few complications published in medical literature. Its placement is performed under anaesthetic control, and usually with deep sedation, so the patient is not aware of anything.” Using endoscopic control, the specialist will be able to see how the balloon inflates while introducing saline solution, until it reaches a volume of around 550 cc. “For improved safety, we also inject a coloured liquid, which will help detect if the balloon has a tear, since it would cause a change in the colour of the patient’s urine.” The duration of the whole procedure is around 30 minutes, and at the end, the patient will remain in a recovery room for under an hour; after that period, he or she may go home. In

order to remove the balloon, the specialist recommends a procedure under general anaesthesia, in order to protect the airway and avoid the inhalation of liquid from the balloon while it is being emptied. What Treatment should be followed after the Insertion of a Gastric Balloon As Doctor Juan Antonio Casellas elaborates, “the first few days after the insertion of the balloon, there will be rejection from the stomach, which is not used to having a half-kilo ball inside, due to which it will try to expel the balloon, causing spasms, nausea and even vomiting.” These symptoms last between three days and one week, and must be treated with medication. “After the adjustment period,” explains the specialist, “the only medication that the patient must take during the whole period they have the gastric balloon is a gastric protector, to avoid reflux symptoms and protect the gastric mucosa, in order to avoid the appearance of an ulcer.” For the Obesity Unit endoscopy specialist, the most important aspect is the monitoring by a psychologist and a nutritionist during the whole process. “The main objective is to help the patient change his or her eating and physical exercise habits, since this is the key to ensure that the weight loss can be maintained over time,” he concludes.

How to Check your Points Online The penalty points system in Spain was introduced in July, 2016, not only to penalise poor driving, but also to award those who drive safer. The system is the opposite to that of the UK, in so much as if you commit an offence you will be given points on your licence, in Spain you are given an allocation which are then taken away in the event of committing an infraction. Lose all your points and the licence is withdrawn. On the other hand, good driving over a period of time will result in you being given more points as a reward, and points can also be recovered through educational courses. If you have a Spanish driving licence you can check how many points you have via their secure website. If you visit the traffic department´s official website, www.dgt.es, you will find all of the information you need, but the majority of it is only available in Spanish. Not a problem if you have some command of the language, but it might be complicated if you´re only just learning. You could use an online translator such as Google to help you, but we will guide you through the process here. When you reach the website you will see in the middle column, under the title “Trámites”, a line which says, “¿Cuantos puntos tengo?” Click on this line and a new page will open with a list of articles

offering lots of advice about the system, including how to recover points, but it is the first option we are interested in, “Consulta de Puntos”, which is nested under “Permisos de conducir”. Lots of information is available, including the ability to translate the page using an automated translation provided by Google. On the right of the page, look for “Acceso al servicio”. You are given the option, access with “Cl@ve”, a form of secure digital key, through “Certificado”, another

form of secure digital signature, and the third, most likely option you will want, “Consulta Saldo de Puntos (con usuario y contraseña)”, consult your points with a user name and password. If you have either of the digital keys you are probably already more advanced, and should be able to access the system yourself, so we are going to explain how to use the third option. Click on the line which says, “Consulta de Puntos Con Usuario y Contraseña”. Another page will now

open. The top section is asking you to submit your user name and password, but as we are assuming you don´t have this yet, you need you need to register first. You only need to copy the secure captcha code (odd looking string of letters and numbers) into the relevant box, then press the big yellow button at the bottom. A new page appears which is asking again for your NIE, this time you must submit it, and for the date of issue of your driving licence. This date is the original issue date of your

licence to drive, not necessarily the issue date of your current renewal. Complete both these boxes and click “Siguente”, for next. Because this is secure information we cannot show you an example, but it is only a couple of pieces of information you need to know. The system will check if the information corresponds to what they have on file. Assuming everything is correct, a new page appears which will be asked to submit your email address, which you must do twice to confirm it is correct. Once you have done this, click “Enviar” to submit the information. Now, you need to check your email for the next stage. You should receive an email with the subject, “Confirmación de accesoPermiso por Puntos de la DGT”. This email will contain a link which you can click to confirm that the email address you associated with your information is correct. Once you have clicked the link you will get another entitled, “Clave de accesoPermiso por Puntos de la DGT”. This email will contain a temporary password. You must now go back to the website and access using your secure username and generated password, which you must change the first time you access the site. Assuming everything has gone to plan, you will now have access to the secure site, which you can check at any time.

Driving in Wind Over the past few weeks we have witnessed windy conditions across various parts of Europe, including Spain, and so we thought this week it would be a good time to look at problems associated with driving in wind. Wind is quite literally a force of nature that can provide welcome cooling on a hot summer´s day, generate electricity, and provide power to boats, amongst many other benefits, but it can also play havoc when driving. Here are three of the main situations we should be aware of when it comes to driving on a windy day. The exits of tunnels Tunnels allow us to cross landforms easily and quickly, but in case of strong wind they can be synonymous with danger. To avoid problems, be sure to keep a firm grasp of the steering wheel when you are about to exit a tunnel. After overtaking a large vehicle We don´t need to get into the physics of drag but if you have ever overtaken a large vehicle on a windy say you will notice that forces are at work surrounding that vehicle before, during and after we pass. The trucks can act as a wall so the wind and so once we pass, we can feel a gust coming from the side which could force our vehicle towards a direction we didn´t intend. Again, be sure to be gripping the steering wheel firmly. Passing buildings near the road If we drive through a windy area with large buildings located near the road, or densely wooded areas, they too can act as walls to the wind, making gusts stronger in open areas, which in turn can alter the stability of our vehicles. It is recommended to firmly hold the steering wheel and look, for example, at the surrounding vegetation or when openings such as streets may appear, to determine the strength and direction of the wind. Overall, when driving on a windy day, you have probably gathered by now that it is important to keep a firm grip on the steering wheel. It is also important not to make any sudden movements, as the trajectory of our vehicle can alter in a fiercer manner than we might have anticipated when the wind catches the surfaces of the vehicle. Try to maintain your course in the lane you are driving in and slow down if necessary, to reduce the risk overall. It is also important to maintain a safe distance, not only from vehicles in front and behind, but also vehicles to the side as we are overtaking or being overtaken. Keep an eye out for warning signs too as wind can be present at any time in certain areas. Windsocks are sometimes used to indicate the power and direction of the wind, so take note if you see one of these too. Be especially alert for large and small vehicles, such as trucks or motorbikes, as each of these will face their own challenges in wind and so extra care must be taken in their presence.

TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT were very few moments to celebrate.

■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

I tell you what folks, given the lack of excitement in the Saturday matches I would imagine Gary Lineker was pretty close to dropping Chappers a text to see if he fancied the MotD gig that night. Goals were hardly flowing, if you know what I mean. Granted, Saturday afternoon saw Palace, Watford, Sheffield United, Norwich, Arsenal, Southampton and Newcastle play – none being the most free-scoring of sides this season. Then you throw in Spurs with their lack of striker multiplied by their manager and you are certainly not punting on over 2.5s, that’s for sure. In fairness, it helped the coronavirus cause – no handshakes before the match and very few during as there

The 2019/20 champions Liverpool did finally get a chance to celebrate their season getting back on track after that crisis that lasted nearly a whole week. Admittedly, it did look very briefly as though yet another exponent of good ol’ 442 was going to have their wicked way with Klopp’s side. Bournemouth need a bit of a helping hand right now and it was a rather big hand placed in the back of Joe Gomez that led to the Cherries taking the lead at Anfield.

So, the Anfield crisis is over and the lead went back to 25 points on Saturday night – though my main thoughts postmatch were around wistfully recalling the days where Liverpool fans sang about having the best two goalkeepers in the league. Yeah, about that. I could have personally told you that Anthony Martial was going to score in the Manchester Derby given I logged into my Fantasy Football account for the first time in months and noticed he was on the bench instead of Ryan Fraser – naturally I reinstalled the moody-looking

If you ignore the blatant shove in Gomez’s back, just like VAR decided to, it was actually a very nice goal by Bournemouth and for a moment, you could see Liverpool’s knees wobble a little. But, when you need to come from behind to get a win it helps if you are playing Howe’s side – one error led to Sadio Mane breaking away and playing in Mo Salah for the equaliser. In fairness, Mo’s goal had a ‘still a bit to do’ rating of 8.5 given how bad Mane’s actual pass was, but nevertheless Anfield took a massive collective sigh of relief when it went in – before dancing in sheer relief after VVD nicked it, passed it and watched as Mane tucked home the winner. Is it too early to say that Sadio went and scored the most important goal of the season? Maybe. At the end, the offside flag incorrectly raised might have spared Callum Wilson’s blushes as he fell over the ball with the goal gaping – though had he managed to stay on his feet like most players would have and score, VAR might well have given it.

Frenchman but I missed the weekend deadline. I’m just shocked he didn’t get a hat-trick against Pep’s lot. That said, I would have also suggested that it was going to be David de Gea who made himself look like a bit of a plonker as Old Trafford – not Ederson – had you asked me to choose between the two goalkeepers. Fred could feel a little hard done by for getting a yellow for ‘diving’ despite Nico Otamendi almost breaking the Brazilian’s shin pad, but that probably won’t bother Ole too much given United have done the double over their city rivals for the first time in a decade. Carlo Ancelotti was hoping for a nice reception at Stamford Bridge and Frank Lampard’s Chelsea remined Uncle Carlo

Las Ramblas Golf Society Monday’s counter game was the version that you didn’t know how many scores were to count until after the hole had been played. It was a family affair as the winning team, with 94 points, was comprised of Nora Betts and Pat Cassidy together with Nick Campbell and Reg Akehurst. It was round two (with the best 4 cards out of 6 to count) of our Society’s annual Stableford Championship on Wednesday. Staking his place amongst the runners and riders in the men’s section was Reg Akehurst with 36 points whilst Petina Murray moved up the Reg Akehurst lady’s leader board also with 36. Just two ‘2’s today one of which was me! The other one went to Ken Robertson. You might be pleased to learn that I have now joined the Torrevieja Digital Camera Club, so you never know, the quality of the photographs may (or may

not) start to improve. Who needs ‘Portrait artist of the year)? ‘Relatively’ speaking it was a good win for John Shervell and his brother Peter in Friday’s ‘Texas Scramble’. Alongside Ken and Liz Robertson they managed a nett score of 62. Not far behind them, with a score of 63.2, were myself, Trevor Pullyblank and John & Ellen Drakesmith. A special mention here to Ellen’s putting which led to us winning the grand total of 6 euros each! Our words of wisdom this week come from Bob Bruce who once remarked, ‘You know you’re on the Senior Tour when your back goes out more often than you do’. Pues hasta la semana que viene Peter Reffell

of better times as they stormed past his Everton side 4-0. Youngster Mason Mount blotted the veterans copybook as Pedro, Willian and, of course, Olivier Giroud were the masterminds behind Chelsea’s most convincing win of the season – what if Frank had picked the golden oldies more often, eh? The win moved Chelsea five points ahead of Wolves in 5th place, who added to the lack of goal action on Saturday in their 0-0 draw with Brighton.

Alain Saint-Maxim clearly didn’t get the message in the team’s Whatsapp group however, as he went rogue and scored the winner. As Watford will have learned, there was little point in beating Liverpool (other than the unexpected three points, a historic day out and fans having something they can tell their grandkids) if they go and lose to Crystal Palace. Believe it or not, Christian Benteke was involved in Palace’s winner, nabbing an assist.

David Moyes is, apparently, keen on making the EFL Cup a British Cup which is a curious call given West Ham’s ability to get beaten by League Two sides in it quite frequently – surely that would be even worse if Glentoran stuck one on the Hammers? At the Emirates, Moyes will have come away wondering how his side had lost to Arsenal – despite the answer being very, very obvious. They scored, David. You didn’t. And we all knew they’d scored, five minutes before VAR decided to give it. VAR just love giving Southampton red cards. The last time the video ref upgraded a Southampton player from a yellow to a red was in that game against Leicester where they got done 9-0 after Ryan Bertrand got caught. Luckily for Ralph this time, the Saints were only playing Newcastle and they’ve not scored nine in 2020, let alone in one match. As we mentioned last week, Newcastle have stopped players shaking hands at the club and we can only presume that their lack of goalscoring threat is also to do with that. Matt Ritchie took it one step too far though, missing his penalty and forcing Mike Ashley to revoke the contract extension Ritchie signed on Thursday.

Billy Sharp just loves scoring at the moment and his winner against Norwich was his third in four games. Dean Henderson’s performance also led to even more people pointing out that we do have other options for Euro 2020 than Jordan ‘shouldn’t get Picked’ford. What is the most Jose Mourinho thing you can possibly imagine? Go on, I’ll give you a moment. Did you come up with going to Burnley and picking five central defenders? You didn’t? Well, he did. I kid you not. Sean Dyche’s side, in a rare moment of being the more creative team on the pitch, battered Spurs at Turf Moor yet left with a 1-1 draw. So, in a way, Jose was proven right – if, of course, we are going to judge Mou on how he gets on away to Burnley nowadays.

Santos' Strike Secures Storming Success With only his second goal of the campaign, classy defender SANTOS (4) slammed home a late, late winner that cements Montesinos' position atop the summit of the 2nd Regional Group 14 table. In a tense and sometimes tetchy affair, it was Montesinos who drew first blood when a marauding wide run from MANU SANCHEZ (9) saw his cross flicked home by leading scorer GONZALO (22) for his 26th of the season. Disappointingly, but perhaps inevitably, the game then slipped into something of a midfield duel as both sides sought either an equaliser or a chance to further their lead. Roared on by a noisy crowd of almost 400, including a sizeable contingent of away fans, both sides blocked and parried thrusts, with some decent football on display. Monte, to be honest, barely looked troubled, but as we know a one goal lead is a slender one. So it was, in the dying embers of the half, another hopeful rather than incisive, Albatera cross was inexplicably handled by a diving Monte defender in the box, penalty! Spot kick duly despatched, the balance of the game seemed to be swinging in favour of their opponents. Still, all square at the break. HT: CD Montesinos 1 – 1 CF Sporting Albatera “A” The “chess” game continued from the restart and for the bulk of the second half. Albatera played neat, pretty football in the first two thirds, but lacked real bite in their attack. Monte, for their

part, looked somewhat lead-footed again, only showing brief glimpses of their natural, quick passing game. To casual observers and football aficionados alike, this was looking like the proverbial 3 pointer on the coupon. A slew of substitutions further disrupted the rhythm of the game. With time ticking away, it was yet another Santander management masterstroke that saw the introduction of mercurial wide midfielder MACCAN (23) to the mix. As with previous performances Monte are developing a habit of scoring late to secure the points and so it was again. Inevitably, MACCAN (23) was involved, when his balletic footwork from a free kick on the right resulted in a bullet-like cross into the fabled “area of uncertainty” where it was met with vigour by SANTOS (4) stabbing home. The home faithful were ecstatic, the away throng cowed. Both teams and supporters alike had barely enough time to grab their breath and the man in the middle blew time on a just about deserved win, over a difficult opponent. So, the mighty Monte machine rolls on, undefeated in 2020. Who can stop them? Is the title theirs for the taking? On this and recent showings, whisper it, this could just be their year! FT: CD Montesinos 2 -1 CF Sporting Albatera “A”. Man of the Match selected by Charlie’s Sports Bar and Grill, was 24 ANDRES. Match report by Steve Robinson

Woo hoo here we go! Sunday High Noon, High Stakes! 6th placed Elche CF faced 8th placed Rayo Vallecano, with a differential of just 3 points, in football jargon a 6 pointer match! Elche wore their green and black away kit, but for the entrance and for the official photos they donned the shirts of the Female Team in support of International Women's Day. Talking of Ladies, Patricia Rodriguez took up the role of General Director of Elche CF on Friday. She has extensive experience in managing Sporting teams and, whilst at SD Eibar, she became the first female executive of a Spanish First Division Club. A disappointing start for Elche as Suarex #4 scored for Rayo on 30 minutes from a penalty following a handball. In quick reply Josan #17 then pinged in a bullet from a corner, which hit the post rather than the back of the net. This was just a warm up for the equaliser, which would come in the second half after a good team talk from Pacheta. After 58 minutes the cross came in, and Oscar Gill #27 found a hole between the goalie and the post to make it 11. As luck would have it, Rayo went down to 10 men just 5

minutes later. Could Elche CF take full advantage of this situation? The answer was yes, of course they could! The Rayo keeper made a howler of a

mistake dropping a cross ball into the path of the oncoming Pere Milla #11 who slotted in the second goal. It got even better for Elche CF and their fans when, on 67 minutes Escriche #20, the new signing from Huesca, scored with his right foot to make it 1-3.

Elche CF are notoriously bad or good at, depending on your point of view, losing their concentration in the final minutes of the game and letting in last minute goals. Today was no exception. On the 88th minute Rayo substitute Montiel #28 pinged in a beauty from 25 yards. This monumental win sees Elche CF cementing themselves in the play off position, moving away with the other 5 teams at the top of the table. They are 4 points clear of 7th place with many upcoming games against lower placed teams. Join the EuroTourGuide Coach Tour for the next Elche CF home match against second from bottom Extremandura on Sunday the 15th March. It is 20€ per adult for return travel and match ticket in the Fondo Sur Cubierta, picking up from the Orihuela Costa, Torrevieja Carrefour, Quesada, Rojales and La Marina. https://eurotourguide.com/en/ coach-tour/Sporting-Events

WALKING FOOTBALL Moraira v Esquina Park Rangers An early start for Esquina this week with an hour and half's drive to the lovely town of Moraira. With nine players in the squad, playing six-a-side – Hughie, Kevin S, Tony, Jim, Matt, Graham, Bish, Gordon and Bobby – playing eight ten minute halves to give the players some breathing space. Moraira being used to playing on their smaller pitch started the liveliest and passed the ball around well eventually poking the ball into Esquina's net....1-0. Esquina, still suffering from jet-lag, had to wake up and start passing the ball more accurately on the tighter pitch. Into the second 10 minutes, Big G Cockburn came to the rescue and managed to score....1-1. Moraira using the pass back to their keeper to good effect, were making Esquina work. Into the third and fourth periods, both teams were playing some neat passing football, but both unable to add to their score. Into the fifth period, Esquina seemed to step up four and a half gears. Our players started pressing forward leaving Moraira unable to keep them under control, Big G Cockburn adding another two goals to his tally and completing his hatrick...1-3. Moraira were not finished yet, coming up the park and scoring...2-3. Making a couple of changes, Esquina with Big Tony running the show in the middle, scored a cracker, giving us a 2-4 lead...

ABBEY ANGLING It was the 9th and final round of the Abbey Angling Cup, which we fished at the El Bosquet Complex Section B pegs 17 to 40 on the 3rd March. There was a reasonable turnout considering it was a running line float only match with no feeder floats, and everyone who participated seemed to enjoy the day. The high wind was making it difficult to fish the float, but I managed to take the top spot on peg 40 with 8.080kgs taken on the maggot and bread, taking second place was Ron Salisbury my fishing mate of many years from Shrewsbury with 6.600kgs using pellet, and in third was Tony Macmillan with 5.280kgs fishing pellet

Moraira pushing Esquina back into their penalty area, were awarded a soft penalty kick with one of their players falling over our keeper's shoelace....Moraira stepped up for the penalty but it was luckily saved by our keeper. With Hughie walking around up front as if he was on Supermarket Sweep, scored a cracking goal...2-5. Into the sixth period, both teams were cancelling each other out in the middle of the park. With Jim and Bish in Esquina's defence, nothing was getting through. Into the seventh period, and some of the players were feeling the heat and tiredness kicking in, it was Matt who found the extra spark and leaving the keeper sprawling with his second attempt scored making it 2-6.... Moraira pushed forward looking to add to their tally and were awarded another penalty as Bish tried to remove a Moraira's player's shorts...Another save from Esquina's keeper ensuring the score stayed at 2-6. Into the last ten minutes of the game, both teams desperate to finish and go for the free pizza, again cancelled each other out in the centre of the park. Final score after eighty minutes...Moraira 2 Esquina Park Rangers 6. A great team performance from all players, a well deserved win. Man of the Match was a close call between Bish and Jim playing some good defensive football...Jim Smith nicking it.

RODS & REELS The 9th round of the Winter Championship was fished at the river Segura in Murcia town centre on Wednesday the 4th March. Very few anglers attended with other commitments, holidays, hospital appointments, and trips to the Federation office etc. Nevertheless it was a glorious day and the fishing was very good. The match was dominated by the two end pegs, Ian Brown drew peg 4 and fished the method feeder to the far bank with 8mm pellets to take 15 Carp for a total of 14.300kgs, second was Mick Hill drawn on the Crystal bridge who fished the method feeder and an orange wafter for 13.580kgs, and third was Tricky Dickie Richard Wood, who again used the method feeder but this time with corn for 12.940kgs 1st Ian Brown 14.300kgs 2nd Mick Hill 13.580kgs 3rd Richard Wood 12.940kgs 4th Alan Maggs 2.880kgs We also ran a pairs competition and this was won by Ian Brown and Richard Wood with a total weight of 27.240kgs There are still some vacancies at the Club and if anyone is interested in joining please contact Richard Wood on 611451423 Tight Lines TERRY SCREEN
