Coronavirus Special Edition: Everything you need to know On 14th March, the Spanish government introduced a State of Emergency, which imposes significant restrictions on movement throughout

Spain in response to the Coronavirus outbreak. These restrictions came into force yesterday morning (16th March) at 8.00am and followed the closure of bars, restaurants, cafes and leisure

facilities on Friday from midnight. From now transport services will be operating at reduced levels. Public gatherings are banned, most shops, many businesses and all schools and universities are closed, and residents have been instructed to remain at home as much as possible. Public spaces, parks and beaches are also off limits. There are limited, specific exceptions to the requirement to remain at home, in particular in order to: buy food or other essential items, to return home to the primary residence, to go to work if unable to work from home and to carry out caring or similar duties for the ill or

elderly, to attend medical appointments or visit the chemist. As always the Costa Blanca People continues to be the leading source of news and information for the local communities of the southern Costa Blanca. In this edition you will find clear and correct information on Coronavirus; the latest news on what you can and can’t do under the new restrictions and how long they are likely to last. There is also pull out and keep type guide covering: what is Coronavirus, how is it spread, what are the signs and symptoms, how to minimise your risk and what to do if you think you have the virus.

BITE SIZE NEWS:

Restrictions for our community

Municipal multipurpose centre The Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, has announced that the building that was to be used for The new Easter Museum, located on Avenida de las Habaneras, will instead become a Municipal Multipurpose Centre. The Mayor has reported that for several months he has been working with the JMC to reach this agreement through which the current Torrevieja Easter Museum will be remodelled and expanded, going from 700 to 1,500 square meters of surface, by joining the Museum building with the Cultural Hall in front of it. Eduardo Dolón explained that within the Municipal Budget for 2020, in the ordinary investments section, there is a starting point to write this expansion project for the Easter Museum, hoping to start the works as soon as possible. The Mayor of Torrevieja expects that by the end of this month the Municipal Multi-purpose Centre will be in perfect condition, given that the building has been thoroughly cleaned for several weeks, and light and water certificates are being carried out. The Centre, which has three underground floors plus five floors and an attic, will house municipal offices, including the Occupational Risk Continued on page 5

For only the second time since 1978, the Spanish government under the leadership of President Pedro Sánchez has declared the highest state of emergency, introducing extraordinary measures intended to stop the spread of SARS-CoV-2 infection by limiting groups of people and encouraging residents to remain in their home. The new rules have been set in place for 15days, but may be extended a further 15 after that. The length of the measures will depend on the transmission figures as China has been on lock down since January and Italy for a month. The measures were introduced as Spain saw a spike of 1,500 new cases literally overnight from Thursday. Figures Firstly, as we go to print these figures will already be out of date, but a rough guide...locally, the Alicante Province has diagnosed more than 40 people with a positive Coronavirus infection, an

increase of 31 over the time prior to the restriction being introduced, with 14 new cases on Saturday. Crucially, the home province also registered its first death, a 77 year old with a pre-existing condition. As a precaution, the University Hospital in Torrevieja has brought in measures prohibiting patients from receiving visitors, and people attending the hospital or seeking treatment must do so unaccompanied. Nationwide, Spain has 7,753 confirmed cases of patients that have tested positive for CoVid-19 coronavirus (an increase of 1,362 over 24 hours), and 291 people have tragically lost their lives to the disease. 517 people remain in hospital for treatment. Spain now the fifth highest number of cases in the world and is second only to Italy in Europe The vast majority of those with a positive Coronavirus diagnosis are located in the Spanish capital city of Madrid or central Northern provinces

such as Burgos and La Rioja, with an increased risk of the virus spreading to the north-western autonomous community of Galicia. However, the risk became very real, very quickly in the local area when, with schools closed Spaniards from the large cities travelled to the coast for an impromptu holiday resulting in a lockdown in San Pedro and around the Mar Menor. What you can and can’t do The Spanish government’s state of emergency order means you can only go out to: • Buy food • Get medicines from the chemist • See a doctor • Attend hospital for an emergency or scheduled appointment • Go to work (if your work cannot be done from home) • Visit the bank • To care for the sick or elderly Oddly, walking the dog (on your own, near to your house), filling up the car,

having a haircut or buying a newspaper or tobacco are also valid excuses to pop out. As are taking a pet to the vet or visiting the optician. Otherwise you should stay indoors and avoid social interaction. This includes, jogging or walking the streets to ‘get some fresh air’ or to ‘stretch your legs’, meeting friends or visiting them in their houses (unless you are caring for the elderly or sick). You cannot go to the beach or the park, with or without children. In addition, you should only go out on foot or in the car to do the above activities. Panic buying and stocking up is not necessary as people are allowed to shop and the supply chain is protected and able to cope for much longer than the lockdown will be imposed. The same goes for medicines and medical supplies. So now is the time to start that home work out plan or binge on that box set!

Latest global Coronavirus developments Coronavirus vaccine Scientists at Israel’s Institute for Biological Research are expected to announce in the coming days that they have completed development of a vaccine for the new Coronavirus COVID19. According to medical sources, the scientists have recently had a significant breakthrough in understanding the biological mechanism and qualities of the virus, including better diagnostic capability, production of antibodies for

those who already have the virus and development of a vaccine. The development process requires a series of tests and experiments that may last many months before the vaccination is deemed effective or safe to use. Asked about the development, the Defence Ministry said: "The institute’s work is conducted according to an orderly work plan and it will take time. If and when there will be something to report, it will be done in an orderly

fashion. The biological institute is a worldrenowned research and development agency, which relies on experienced researchers and scientists with great knowledge and quality infrastructures. There are now more than 50 experienced scientists working at the institute on researching and developing a medical remedy for the virus." Normally, a long process of pre-clinical trials on animals would be the next phase, followed by clinical trials. This period allows for a full characterization of side effects and a better understanding of how different populations are affected. Yet the global emergency over the Coronavirus pandemic may accelerate this process in order to vaccinate as many people who are most at risk from the virus. The development of an effective vaccine would end the global crisis caused by the virus; it would also protect the world’s population for a more serious outbreak next year, as some predict could happen. Country round up The Irish government has asked Irish holidaymakers in Spain to return by midnight Thursday. Germany closed its borders with France, Austria and Switzerland from 8am on Monday in order to try to hem in spread of the Covid-19 pandemic, German media reported on Sunday afternoon. Exceptions are expected to be made for goods traffic and commuters. The German government took the step following a conference call with the premiers of the affected states of Rhineland-Palatinate, BadenWürttemberg and Saarland, said newspaper Bild. Bulgaria will ban incoming flights from Italy and Spain as of midnight on 17th March in measures to contain the spread of Coronavirus, its transport minister said.

Rosen Zheliazkov said on Sunday that Bulgarians who wanted to return home from these countries would have Monday and Tuesday to do so and would face 14 days’ quarantine. He said the Balkan country, on the gateway between Asia and Europe, will ensure the free transport of goods and escort heavy trucks that need to pass through its territory A British hotel chain has said it could turn its properties into temporary hospitals if the NHS needs additional bed space during the Coronavirus outbreak, PA reports. Best Western Great Britain said it will discuss the move this week and would be willing to take “unprecedented” steps to help. Rob Paterson, chief executive officer of Best Western Great Britain, said: “If the NHS wants additional bed space, and we can partner with other companies to provide the right medical equipment and supplies, and we can do it safely, then we would be willing to start having those conversations immediately. “Whatever we can do to help.” As the U.S. government rushed on Saturday to implement President Trump’s restrictions on travel from Europe, part of an effort to stop the spread of the Coronavirus, chaos ensued at some of America’s biggest airports. In Dallas, travellers posted photos on Twitter of long winding lines in the airport. In New York, customs agents in paper and plastic masks boarded a flight from Paris. And in Chicago, where travellers reported standing in line for hours. The confusion came as concern spread about the Coronavirus pandemic, which has now been identified in more than 2,700 people in the United States and has prompted Mr. Trump to declare a national emergency.

Coronavirus: the low down We all have questions about the 2019 Coronavirus, the first of those questions may have to do with how the virus is able to spread so quickly and virulently through the population. First then, a brief explanation about the Coronavirus itself: The clinical name for this novel Coronavirus is actually SARSCoV-2. It stands for severe acute respiratory syndrome Coronavirus 2. It originated from a family of other viruses that cause respiratory diseases like severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS). Because the novel Coronavirus is a new strain, it’s unfamiliar to our immune systems. And there’s not yet a vaccine for it. If a person contracts the virus, the result is the disease called COVID-19. Being a respiratory virus, it’s transmitted through respiratory droplets. Let’s take a closer look at how the novel Coronavirus spreads from one person to another, and what you can do to protect yourself. How does it spread from person to person? Person-to-person contact is thought to be the main method of transmission for the SARS-CoV-2 virus, according to global medical experts. Imagine sitting next to someone with a SARS-CoV-2 infection on the bus or in a meeting room. Suddenly, this person sneezes or coughs. If they don’t cover their mouth and nose, they could potentially spray you with respiratory droplets from their nose or mouth. The droplets that land on you or that you inhale will likely contain the virus.

Or perhaps you meet someone who has contracted the virus, and they touched their mouth or nose with their hand. When that person shakes your hand, they transfer some of the virus to your hand. If you then touch your mouth or nose without washing your hands first, you may accidentally give that virus an entry point into your own body. Transfer can also occur if someone with Coronavirus coughs or sneezes onto a surface, such as a door handle. You open the door and the virus spreads to your hand and then you touch your mouth or face – but more on this later. This is why kissing, handshaking and washing hands is key to limiting the spread of Coronavirus. SUMMARY Person-to-person contact seems to be the main method of transmission of the novel coronavirus. Transmission typically occurs when: 1. Someone with the virus sneezes or coughs on you, leaving respiratory droplets on your skin or clothing, or you touch someone who has the virus on their skin or clothing. 2. You touch a contaminated surface 3. You then touch your face, which gives the virus an entry point via your mouth, nose, or eyes. Can someone spread the virus even if they don’t have symptoms? Right now, the World Health Organisation (WHO) suggests that your risk for contracting the novel Coronavirus from someone who isn’t showing any symptoms is very low. However, there is some sobering news:

experts do believe it’s possible that someone with a novel Coronavirus infection could transmit it to others even if they don’t show any symptoms, or have such mild symptoms that they don’t really know they’re sick. According to the experts, a person who has contracted the virus is most contagious when they’re showing symptoms — and that’s when they’re the most likely to transmit the virus. But someone may be able to pass on the virus even before they start to show symptoms of the disease itself. The symptoms may take anywhere from 2 to 14 days to show up after exposure to the virus.

One recent study of 181 patients with COVID-19 found a median incubation period of about 5 days, with more than 97 percent showing symptoms by 11.5 days after exposure to the virus. Can you pick it up from infected surfaces? Think of all the frequently touched surfaces where germs can lurk: kitchen counters, bathroom counters, doorknobs, elevator buttons, the handle on the refrigerator, handrails on staircases. The list goes on and on. Experts don’t know for sure how long the novel Coronavirus can survive on these surfaces. But if the virus behaves like other, similar viruses, the survival time

could range from several hours to several days. The type of surface, the temperature of the room, and the humidity in the environment may play a role in how long the virus can survive on a surface. But since we don’t know for sure, if you think a surface may be contaminated, clean it thoroughly with a disinfectant. A diluted bleach solution, a strong disinfectant or hydrogen peroxide mixed solution is likely the most effective cleaner for this purpose. And if someone in your home is sick, frequently clean those surfaces. Remember to thoroughly wash your hands afterward.

Prevention Service, plus others to be detailed later, as well as the headquarters of the UA, the UMH and UNED, which will soon be launched. In addition, it will have a Youth Leisure Centre, an Associations Hotel, highly demanded by local groups; as well as areas for conferences, meetings, congresses or small concerts and rehearsal rooms for local choirs and music bands.

Festival of horror The councillor for Youth, Domingo Paredes, hosted a terror film festival aptly on Friday, 13th March. The “Torrerífico” horror short film festival was held at the cultural centre and organised by the Department of Youth in collaboration with the university headquarters of the UA in Torrevieja and the youth association La Comarca de Torrevieja. A total of 16 horror shorts made on mobile phones were submitted into the contest and the prizes, sponsored by the UA, were €300 for the winning short film and another two awards of €100 each. The jury was made up of experts from the UA and a member of the AJ La Comarca.

New local police vehicles The Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, has presented the 12 new vehicles destined for the Torrevieja Local Police force. The new vehicles are being leased as an emergency measure due to the unfortunate state of the current police vehicles. The investment, of about 55,000 euros, will continue until July when the 17 new vehicles on order for the Local Police fleet are expected. In total 12 vehicles have been purchased: six Nissan Qashqai, four Opel Mokka, one Renault van for the Operational Reinforcement Group (GRO) and one Citroën van for general services. The mayor stressed that these vehicles are fully equipped with all elements for emergency vehicles and with the police logo as per the regulations of the Generalitat Valenciana.

New bins for Orihuela Costa The Councillor for Street Cleaning, Dámaso Aparicio, has received delivery of the 576 new rear-loading containers and the 189 bins that arrived this week completing the provision of containers and responding to the need for 1,000 new containers that are required across municipal term. After having established the needs and priorities for the placement of containers and litter bins, now from the technical services “are going to try to get them out on the streets and in place for Easter, so that Orihuela presents a better image in terms of aesthetics and tidiness”, Aparicio explained. The Councillor added: "We are aware of the existing need for replacement of containers, which has been increased in recent months after the scourge of the DANA."

In line with the new government restrictions, the Costa Blanca People team are working hard behind the scenes to bring you the latest news, and as a respected key media supplier are allowed to do this, providing we are not opening our office to the public. Therefore, please be aware that until

further notice the office is closed to everyone apart from staff members. However, contact numbers can be found towards the back of the paper on page 41 and we will endeavour to continue to serve the community to the best of our ability.

Coronavirus scam warning Even in these difficult times, when the community needs to work together and support each other through the tough times ahead, some disgraceful people will try to take advantage and use the situation to their own ends. There have been a number of unconfirmed reports that thieves dressed as doctors, nurses or members of the Red Cross have been going to people’s homes posing as health workers saying they have been sent to test for the coronavirus and that they will even disinfect their home before they leave.

Of course, this is not true, it’s a despicable scam. The health authority is not and would not send staff to people’s homes. These people are nothing more than common thieves, who are taking advantage of the situation. They lie their way into homes and whilst the owner is distracted by one thief, the other steals anything they can get away with...money, jewellery and valuables. Hopefully the curfew will put paid to this scam and the police would approach anyone suspicious, but please be aware and call the police if you are approached in this way.

The low down continued... How to protect yourself It can be difficult to avoid being exposed to the virus, especially if you’re often surrounded by other people. But, according to medical experts, there are a number of things you can do to protect yourself: • Stand back. Try to stay clear of people who are coughing or sneezing. The WHO suggests staying at least 3 feet (one metre) away from people who may be sick or you don’t know. • Wash your hands frequently. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds every time. Do this after using the cash point, shopping, touch handles, going to the bathroom, entering the house from any trip outside. • Use alcohol-based hand sanitiser if you don’t have access to soap and water. Look for a product that’s at least 60 percent alcohol. You can buy bottles of 96 percent alcohol from local stores. Drinking alcohol such as gin and vodka cannot be used to sanitise hands or surfaces! • Avoid touching your face. You can easily transmit the virus from your hands to your mouth, nose, or eyes without even realising it. • Stay home. You may hear this called “social isolation or exclusion.” Staying away from groups of people may help you avoid being exposed. Which is exactly the reason why Spain has enforced restricted movement across the country. Right now, experts are suggesting that it’s not necessary to wear a face mask to protect yourself from getting

sick. However, according to experts, people who are sick should wear a mask if they’re around other people to stop the spread of the virus to others. What are the symptoms? COVID-19 causes symptoms that are similar to those of other types of respiratory illnesses. Typical symptoms of COVID-19 include: • fever • cough • shortness of breath Flu-like symptoms, such as chills and body aches, are less common with COVID-19. Also, shortness of breath is more pronounced with COVID-19 compared with the seasonal flu or common cold. If you think you have symptoms of COVID-19, head home and stay there. Isolating yourself at home and staying away from other people can slow the transmission of the virus. You’ll also want to: • Contact your doctor. Let your doctor know about your symptoms and get advice on what to do. They can work with local health authorities to determine if you need to be tested for the virus. • Limit exposure to others. Limit your contact with others in your home. Avoid sharing household items with them. • Cover your nose and mouth. Use a face mask if you’re around others. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, and discard the tissue right away. What to do if you have symptoms of COVID-19 A dedicated line has been

announced for the pandemic. If you or someone you know thinks they might have any symptoms of Coronavirus

infection or any flu-like symptoms whatsoever, do not go to a medical centre, a doctors surgery, or a hospital.

Instead, call +34 900 300 555 for assistance.

Mad Hatters Tea Party Spangles fundraising continues The Mad Hatters Tea Party at the Marina Bar on Friday 6th March was a resounding success yet again. Fundraisers David and Lorraine Whitney were thrilled with the support for the AFA Alzheimer’s Association, Torrevieja. With a quiz, raffle, comic verse and songs sung by A.J.Swing the afternoon sped by with a lot of fun and laughter. Rita and Dave of the Marina Bar together with their loyal staff worked hard as usual to provide a delightful afternoon tea and

David and Lorraine and helper Pauline Lane ensured the smooth running of this event. Next on the cards will be a very unique 'glitzy' charity event due early June, again at the Marina Bar for the charity AFA Alzheimer’s Association Torrevieja. On a sad note, John Harwood who, together with his wife Madeline ran the Tombola stall at many of these events, passed away recently. Our thoughts go out to Madeline at this sad time.

Spangles Ladies’ Harmony Chorus is known for supporting local charity fundraisers and Christmas led to several being helped, including MABS San Javier, Cruz Azul Murcia and Finca La Castellana in San Miguel de Salinas. Following on from this, Spangles took part in a fundraiser for the victims of the flooding in Los Alcázares last September, alongside local groups La Rondalla Son del Mar Menor and Agrupación Coral Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de Los Alcázares. “We witnessed the devastation of the flooding in September and some of us helped with the clear up and replacement of household items lost, so we were delighted to be able to raise funds to help even further. Thank you to all our supporters who gave so generously” said Chorus Manager, Lyn. At their concert to celebrate International Women’s Day, on behalf of all the participants, Spangles presented

the town hall with a cheque for 1100€ for the Los Alcázares flood fund. Next stop was the C Breeze Cocktail Lounge to help celebrate St David’s Day with staff and customers. Quite a challenge this year as some of the chorus members treated them to a rendition of ‘Myfanwy’, which was beautifully arranged in four part harmony by friend and composer, Liz Lane. “It was probably the hardest thing I’ve had to do in my singing career” remarked Spangles Musical Director, Valerie Lynch, who has sung with Pavarotti in her youth. Haling from America and operatically trained, Valerie says that the lyrics were the most difficult she has ever had to learn. Accompanied by Wendy Grant and Lynda Christopher (a native Welsh speaker) and backed by Spangles, they gave a beautiful performance and owner, Derrick, said that they would have done any Welsh choir proud. It was a super night of celebration, with 500€

raised, 250€ of which will be donated to Help at Home Costa Blanca and 250€ kindly donated to help with Spangles expenses to get to Belgium. “Our support of charities is ongoing,” said Lyn “and our next fundraising event is at the Vega Baja Spring Fayre on 8 April in the Casa De Cultura, Plaza Jaime, San Miguel De Salinas, just after we return from Belgium. We hope that people will take the opportunity to come and hear us and support this great charity.” Spangles is a ladies’ a cappella chorus, singing in four part harmony. They rehearse every Thursday, from 10.15 am to 1.15 pm at Centro Municipal Las Claras, Calle Helena, Los Narejos, Los Alcázares and visitors are always welcome. If you’d like to book the chorus for an event or you are thinking about joining them, you can find out more on their website: www.spangleschorus.com or email info@spangleschorus.com

Ladies Day comedy by ACTS The horses are lining up, all bets are on and they’re under starter’s orders. York Racecourse is the venue for Royal Ascot Ladies’ Day and the ladies are resplendent in their hats. Four women from a Hull fish filleting factory, dressed in their finery are set for a grand day out, full of surprises. This comedy drama by Amanda Whittington is an odds on certainty to leave you wanting more.

Another production by ACTS Drama Group at the Casa Cultura in Benijófar is on 23rd, 24th and 25th April. Tickets (€10) are available from The Post Room, Benijófar, Oasis Bar & Bistro, Benijófar, The Card Shop, Benimar, The Post Box, Doña Pepa and Cards and More, La Marina. Local lady honoured Charity shop make on Women’s Day over

Maria Wilson the founder of Maria and the Pink Ladies, former Orihuela President of the AECC and President of the newly established AACC cancer charity was recognised by the Zenia Boulevard management team and honoured as one of three women in the 2020 International Women’s Day awards. Maria was presented with a diploma and bouquet of flowers in front of crowds at a packed Zenia Boulevard. Maria was recognised for her tireless efforts in raising much needed funds to help in the fight against cancer and her passion for enabling and ensuring that the people of the Costa Blanca take advantage of early detection programmes as discovering cancer in its earliest stages saves lives. Congratulations to Maria as this Maria gets award is a well deserved award.

Having being open for more than 14 years, the Debra Charity shop in Pueblo Bravo was in need of a long overdue revamp. Luckily, three kindhearted Buffalo (Buffs) Lodges generously donated €1,000 for the purchase of new display cabinets and bookcases. These were the Patience Lodge 2177, Phillip Scott Lodge 10671 and Washington Lodge 2178. A spokesperson from the charity said: “Heartfelt thanks go to everyone involved in the project not forgetting our very own volunteer shop fitter Graham Ketley assisted by his wife Rita for spending many hours putting the units together.”

PEACE OF MIND FOR YOUR HEALTHCARE Eduardo Abenoza is an exclusive agent for DKV seguros, which is a well respected health insurance company serving many countries in Europe. The company itself was founded originally in Germany and was established in Spain some over 30 years ago. DKV offers mainly private health insurance but also home insurance and funeral plans. Eduardo told the Costa Blanca People, “I started working with DKV around 15 years ago. At that time very few English speaking companies were offering good quality and good price private health Insurance.” He continued, “In Spain, policies and communication is normally in Spanish. For the English speaking expat community, I act as the customers direct agent. This way, they have a real person to contact, in English, speaking for all queries they may have about their insurance. In addition, I

have access to the best offers and deals that the company offers so can also save money for customers.” DKV doesn’t require a medical, nor is there an age limit on new policies. New clients simply need to fill in a health questionnaire. They offer a

variety of policies for all needs from basic to worldwide comprehensive cover. The company prides itself on working with the best hospitals and medical teams in Spain, and values excellent customer

BUSINESS PROFILE

service. On choosing the most suitable policy, Eduardo explained, “I always advise the customer on the best product for their individual needs. My advice is that with any insurance, it is best to be covered before anything happens and...is there anything more important than our health?” DKV also offers family policies for four or more family members and business policies for companies – the business policies can be tax deductible too. All of DKV’s policies cover emergencies abroad and if, like many, you spend half the year in Spain and half in your own country, DKV offers worldwide cover policies which pay 90% of the medical costs abroad anywhere in the world.

New local anticancer charity This week saw the launch of a new and locally dedicated anti-cancer charity - Alicante Asociacion de Contra Cancer (AACC). However, although the charity may be new to the area, the driving forces behind it are not. The brainchild of Pablo Enriquez Valens, who was the former Head of the AECC’s Alicante branch, the AACC has enlisted many of the local AECC’s presidents, including Orihuela Costa President Maria Wilson to offer a comprehensive Early Detection Programme and support for local cancer sufferers and their families. Maria explained: “The AECC was headquartered in Madrid, not locally. We were told recently that the organisation had decided it no longer wanted to run local early detection program or provide personal support. To all of the volunteers this is the heart of the help and prevention we provide. We were horrified that this would no longer be offered. Pablo, a surgeon at Alicante General Hospital, also felt very strongly about this. So strongly in fact he resigned from the AECC and decided to establish his own charity offering the services he truly believes in and this time dedicated solely to the people living in the Province of Alicante.

He spoke to the volunteers that headed the local offices such as Maria Wilson and they all resigned from their AECC posts and have taken up the same positions within the AACC. With a current total of 22 offices across the province the charity can offer grass roots care at the centre of each community. AACC has also entered into an agreement with IMED in Torrevieja to continue to provide early detection test for men and women at the same subsidised prices. We are offering exactly the

same services, nothing has changed, we are in the same office with the same contact details but we are now called AACC. That is the only change, the name.” Maria who’s charity Maria and the Pink Ladies raised more than 470,000 euros for the AECC is determined to continue to raise funds to fight cancer at a local level and to the benefit and support of the people of Orihuela Costa. For further information call Maria Wilson on 633 487 595.

GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP Brexit concerns faded into the background this week as the market focused on the coronavirus pandemic. At the beginning of the week, UK equities opened around 9% below Friday’s closing levels, putting pressure on sterling. The emergency rate cut from the Bank of England midweek had an immediate effect, pushing the pound lower before it made tentative gains ahead of the budget announcement. The rate cut from 0.75% to 0.25% was accompanied by the introduction of “a new Term Funding scheme with additional incentives for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (TFSME), financed by the issuance of central bank reserves”. Later the same day, the Chancellor announced a package of measures to address the threat of the coronavirus, alongside historic levels of public investment. The news took the pound higher, briefly, although the optimism was short-lived as the market considered the scale of borrowing required for the promised programmes and fears over the impact of the coronavirus put pressure on the stock market. While both the rate cut and the budgetary measures were considered supportive to the pound, ultimately they were considered no match against a situation on the scale of the current pandemic. While other countries have implemented lock-down measures to prevent the spread of the virus, the UK has not followed suit, opting instead for a largely “business as usual” approach which has the intention of delaying the spread rather than preventing it entirely. While all currencies are struggling due to market volatility, the UK’s divergence

from the global approach is putting the pound under additional scrutiny, and only time will tell if the current strategy will pay off for the country or for sterling. In Europe, the divergence from global strategies to address the coronavirus has been of a different kind, and the euro has paid the price. While Italy, amongst the worst-hit countries, is in lock-down, the ECB chose not to cut rates towards the end of the week which has put the euro in a precarious position. News from the US earlier in the week that a travel ban had been implemented for the Schengen area did more harm to the US dollar than the euro, but Christine LaGarde’s refusal to follow other central banks and cut rates pushed the central currency lower. While the move has come in for some criticism, the reality is that the ECB has less scope to cut rates than other central banks and opted instead to call on governments to implement fiscal measures alongside the ECB’s strategy to conduct a new kind of targeted longer-term refinancing operation (TLTRO) aimed at banks lending to small- and medium-sized businesses (SMEs). Earlier in the week, the Sentix Index of Euroland investor confidence came in at -17.1, close to a seven-year low and the ECB did nothing to inspire a rise in confidence. Fears arose of a repeat of the 2012 eurozone debt crisis after the ECB’s statement; the interest rate on 10-year Italian bonds jumped from 1.3% to 1.8%, the FTSE 100 fell more than 60 points, the German Dax index dropped 12.2% and the Madrid Ibex also fell 14.0%. As the situation continues to evolve, the market may continue to be volatile and the euro under pressure.

Road chaos Businesses, residents and visitors to Quesada have been left annoyed and confused by the chaos caused by what are being described as the ‘inconsiderate’ program of road works. The program is a €700,000 road improvement plan to transform the main thoroughfare in Ciudad Quesada, the Avenue de las Naciones. However, there has been much frustration from locals because of the instant removal of dozens of parking spaces on that road. Local residents and business owners have voiced concerns that the road works and the lack of parking in particular will have a detrimental effect on the town, the community and the local

economy; effectively choking the life from the high street. The Town Hall is being requested to provide replacement car parks urgently. One way traffic along the entire street is in operation, as engineers re-route utilities and resurface the road, one side at a time. Consequently, the ‘zig-zag’ parking bays have been removed, and will eventually be replaced by a wider and safer pavement on the north side. The only way through the town is to follow the diversion signs, which aren’t always consistent. Rebecca Serwotka, Director, Inmobiliaria, said: “Over the 31 years of living and working in Quesada, we’ve seen lots of works going on in and around

the area over the years, however nothing on this grand scale. Trying to carry out such an enormous “facelift" at the entrance probably looked great on paper, but reality of carrying out the work is horrendous. I have to say the lack of urgency to complete the road works, means the smaller businesses as in, boutiques, bars and restaurants are suffering due to the lack of passing trade and foot traffic. We know it’s a short term chaos for a long term gain, but they need to push through the “mañana” mentality and finish it, as quickly as possible. Have they not heard of working through the night and at weekends? It’s getting beyond a joke now.”

Mercadona has stopped its home delivery services and teleshopping and announced it will focus on a streamlined range of 500 products. Areas will be marked to control capacity and everyone will need to disinfect their hands on entry. No products returns will be accepted under any

circumstance. There will be no cooked fish products or sushi counter and no fresh bakery – packaged goods only. However there is no change to the meat counter but fresh fish will not be cleaned, for safety reasons. Posters in store will inform shoppers of new guideline for distance, hygiene etc. Opening hours remain 9am to 8pm

Benidorm hotels to close under curfew restrictions Hotels across Spain are to close in 72 hours according to the new restrictions of social interaction and exclusion. As they are not specifically named in the new decree, unlike supermarkets, petrol stations and chemists for example, hotels must close – this includes the famous Costa Blanca resort Benidorm. A notice shoved under guest doors at one Levante hotel reads:

“Dear Guest, Please note that due to an official statement of the Government all the Hotels in Benidorm will need to close in 72 hours. If you are checking out after this date, you will need to arrange a flight back home. If you booked through Jet 2 Holidays please contact their 24 hours call centre. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Thank you for your co-operation.” Having checked with a trusted source it has been confirmed that the rule does indeed apply to all hotels in Spain and the Balearic Islands. However, with most holiday companies cancelling flights, and all bars and restaurant closed and Spain on general lockdown the tourist industry is already set to lose millions of euros even if the lockdown is short lived.

Homes & Garden

Potted fruit and veg Here in Spain many of us have pot gardens, with flowers and plants all adorning our terraces and balconies in decorative pots. However, did you know that you can also have your own vegetable allotment in pots. From delicate, leafy herbs to root vegetables and sturdy fruit trees, there should be no reason why – given a little thought, forward planning and of course, some tender loving care – you can’t create a varied, productive container garden, whatever the space and the conditions you are working in. Salad leaves for example are easy to grow, make good use of space and generally taste much better than what you can buy in the shops. A Figs couple of 30cm pots of cutand-come again leaves will give you flavoursome fresh salads for weeks, if not months. Choose carefully and you will have a pot full of textures and colours to bring you pleasure throughout the year. Other stars of the kitchen container garden include stalwarts, such as chard and kale, which will keep you in fresh greens all year round; structural plants, such as globe artichokes, that will anchor your display; and true show stoppers, such as peas and the gloriously varied sea kale. You will find that many of them offer tremendous value too. Some, such as chard, will just keep on growing, while others offer several crops for the price of one: think

of peas, with their shoots, flowers and juvenile pods, or the delectable tops of broad beans. Root vegetables may not seem like the most obvious candidates for a container garden, but they can do very well in a confined space, and, of course, you can

control the growing conditions in a pot far more easily than in a garden. They are also surprisingly generous crops to grow: a pot of beetroot will give you handfuls of delicious leaves as well as the roots themselves. Root vegetables are well worth growing for aesthetic reasons too: the bright green, frothy foliage of a carrot is a great foil for the dramatic, deep red of beetroot leaves, while parsnips are a good looking addition. Think about growing fruit trees, and the first thing that comes to mind is that you will probably need an orchard, or at the very least a generous kitchen garden. Think again. These days there are so many dwarf forms of fruit trees

especially bred to thrive in pots – and produce full-size fruit – that there really is no reason not to grow your own. Indeed, having limited space can actually work to your advantage – walls, provided they get plenty of sun, will reflect heat and speed up ripening, particularly of more exotic crops, such as figs, apricots and peaches. But even if a tree feels too ambitious, you can still share the joy. A blueberry bush in a pot will yield handfuls of sun-warmed berries, while delicate, violet-flavoured Alpine strawberries don’t even need a pot of their own – they will happily grow in the spaces around other crops, or even in the cracks between paving slabs. Herbs are generally very well suited to growing in pots. They take up relatively little space – although do avoid using containers that are too small – and give so much in return. A few fresh herbs will transform your cooking.

Agadir

Three languages are spoken in the city: Tashelhit (first language of the majority), Moroccan Arabic, and French. The city was destroyed by an earthquake in 1960; it has been completely rebuilt with mandatory seismic standards. It is now the largest seaside resort in Morocco, where foreign tourists and many residents are attracted by an unusually mild year-round climate History The oldest cartographic mention of Agadir is on a map from 1325: at the approximate location of the modern city there was an indication of a place called Porto Mesegina, after the name of a Berber tribe already mentioned in the 12th century, the Mesguina, that is to say the Ksima. In 1505, the Portuguese, who were already installed on the Moroccan coast, founded a trading post and a fort at the foot of the hill to the sea, Santa Cruz do Cabo de Aguer on the site of the now-vanished neighborhood of Founti (named after the Portuguese word fonte meaning fountain) under a governor. Quickly, the Portuguese were exposed to the hostility of the tribes of the region. From 1530, they were blockaded in Santa Cruz. Portuguese weakness showed itself on 12 March 1541 when Sherif Saâdien Mohammed ash-Sheikh captured the fortress of Santa Cruz de Aguer. In 1572, the Casbah was built on top of the hill by Moulay Abdallah al-Ghalib, successor to Mohammed ash-Sheikh. In the 17th century, during the reign of the Berber dynasty of Tazeroualt, Agadir was a harbour of some importance, expanding its trade with Europe. There was, however, no real port nor a wharf. Agadir traded mainly in sugar, wax, copper, hides and skins. Europeans took their manufactured goods, particularly weapons and textiles. Under the reign of Sultan Moulay Ismail (1645–1727) and his successors, the trade with France, until then an active partner regressed to the English and the Dutch. In 1731, the town was completely destroyed by an earthquake. The harbour of Agadir was then ordered to be closed when Essaouira was established farther north. In 1746, the Dutch set up a trading post at the foot of the Casbah under the authority of the Sultan, and undoubtedly participated in the restoration of the city. In the years from 1930, a modern central city began to be built according to the plans of the urban planner Henri Prost, director of the Urban Planning Department of the Protectorate, and his deputy Albert Laprade: a horseshoe layout based on the waterfront around a large avenue perpendicular to the waterfront – the Avenue Lyautey, since renamed Avenue du Général Kettani. After 1950 and the opening of the new commercial port, the city grew with fishing, canning, agriculture, and mining. It also began to open up to tourism thanks to its climate and beautiful hotels. In 1959, the port was visited by the yacht of the Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis and his guest, Winston Churchill. Agadir after 1960 The current city was rebuilt 2 km further south, led by the architects Jean-François Zevaco, Elijah Azagury, Pierre Coldefy, and Claude Verdugo. Agadir became a large city of over half a million by 2004, with a large port with four basins: the commercial port with draft of 17 metres, triangle fishing, fishing port, and a pleasure boat port with marina. Agadir was the premier sardine port in the world in the 1980s and has a famous beach stretching over 10 km with one of the finest seafront promenades in the world With Marrakech, Agadir is a very important centre for

tourism to Morocco, and the city is the most important fishing port in the country. With its white buildings, wide flowered boulevards, modern hotels and European style cafes, Agadir is not a typical city of traditional Morocco but it is a modern, active and dynamic city, turned towards the future. New Talborjt This area is named after the old district of Talborjt (meaning "small fort" in local Berber, in remembrance of the water tower which was first built on the plateau in the former Talborjt). Lively, the New Talborjt which has been rebuilt away from the Old Talborjt, has as a main artery the Boulevard Mohammed Sheikh Saadi, named after the victor against the Portuguese in 1541. Some good hotels and restaurants have been built on the main arteries. Old Talborjt Overlooking the waterfront and Wadi Tildi, this old district (whose name is sometimes spelled Talbordjt) was once a shopping area and very lively with its large square where there was a weekly market, hotels, schools, mosque 90% of the buildings in Old Talborjt were destroyed or severely damaged by the earthquake in 1960. The Abattoir (Industrial area) One of the most popular neighbourhoods, it is known for its Square for taxis and buses. It is a junction that unites the heart of the city and its surroundings. This district was the least affected by the earthquake of 1960. Souk El Had This is the largest market in the region. It has about 6,000 small shops. It is surrounded by walls and has several entrances. It is organized into different sectors: furniture, crafts, clothing, vegetables, meat, spices etc. It is possible to find all kinds of handicrafts and traditional decorations. La Médina La Médina is a handicrafts space created in 1992 by the Italian artist Coco Polizzi, at Ben Sergao, a district close to Agadir 4.5 km from the city centre. Built using techniques of traditional Berber construction, it is a kind of small open-air museum, on five hectares and home to artisan workshops, a museum, individual residences, a small hotel, and an exotic garden. Climate Agadir features a subtropical-semiarid climate with warm summers and mild winters. Located along the Atlantic Ocean, Agadir has a very temperate climate. The daytime temperature generally stays in the 20s °C (70s °F) every day, with the winter highs typically reaching 20.4 °C or 68.7 °F in December and January. Places to visit • The view of the city and the bay from Agadir Oufella (Casbah) • Bert Flint Museum on Boulevard Mohammed V • Valley of the Birds, a pleasant bird park stretching along the Avenue of Administrations, between Boulevard Hassan II and 20 August • The garden of Ibn Zaidoun • Mohammed V Mosque, on the Boulevard President Kennedy • Souk el Had • The little train of Agadir: circuit around the city • Amazigh (Berber) Heritage Museum at the Ayt Souss Square • The garden of Olhão or "Garden of Portugal" and its memorial museum in Talborjt • The marina with its Moorish architecture and shops

There was someone else No going back At the wake of my beloved husband‘s funeral my sister asked me who the woman was leaving flowers on the grave. I didn’t know, and we returned to the graveside and read a card that said ‘you and I always x ’. I can’t tell you how I felt - it was like a punch to the stomach. It was enough that I had lost the man I loved but to find out that there was possibly someone else in his life has come as a great blow. How do I find out who she was? I am not sure if you kept the card that accompanied the flowers but it might give you the name of the Florist. If you are determined to find out the truth, there may be some clues in your husband’s personal effects. Otherwise then it might be an impossible task to find out who this woman was. I can understand how wretched you must feel and I would urge you to seek some counselling to help you come to terms with this discovery.

I had long suspected that my grand-daughters were frightened of their father and once raised it with my daughter who said he was just being strict when the girls needed it. However, I had seen bruises on the youngest girl’s arm, and she came crying to me and said her father had pushed her about. I am afraid I snapped and reported my son-in-law to social services. The girls were taken into care briefly, my daughter told her husband to get out, and I am no longer welcome in my daughter’s house. To this day I wonder whether I did the right thing. Abuse shouldn’t be tolerated under any circumstances. Time is a great healer and hopefully your daughter will come around or your grand-daughters, once grown up may contact you again. It was a very brave thing for you to do, but you cannot reproach yourself for it. Sadly, you have paid the ultimate price and feel you have now lost your daughter and her family, but we all know what the worst case scenario could have been if you hadn’t spoken out.

Fallas postponed Valencia’s huge March Fallas festival may take place over the same dates – but in July, according to initial proposals by the regional government. As yet, nothing has been confirmed, but the massive fiesta which takes over the city for a week until 19th March is such a deeply-rooted part of the region's culture and is such an enormous source of income that those involved are unlikely to let the matter drop until they know they will be able to celebrate it at some point in 2020. It was announced recently that the Fallas in Valencia would not go ahead, for the first time since the Civil War and only the fifth time in history, as a precaution to help stop the spread of the Covid-19 Coronavirus. Even though the risk of contagion in other, smaller towns throughout the region is very small, the entire fiesta has been called off in all three provinces.

But monuments already set up may well be burnt down as scheduled anyway, albeit in a restricted manner and avoiding crowds. Gigantic papier mâché statues the height of a four- or fivestorey block of flats, featuring caricatures of politicians and celebrities and satirising current

affairs, each with its own marquée or casal where the falleras and falleros, or fiesta club members, eat, drink and party around the clock dressed in traditional regional costume for the best part of a week, and daily gunpowder banger displays or mascletaes giving off clouds of coloured smoke, all bring in tourists from across the country and even from around the world.

Every year sees about €500700 million pouring into Valencia city alone in the week leading up to the cremà (burning) of the fallas, or monuments, on the night of March 19. That's not counting the fact that almost every town and village, even tiny hamlets, in the province of Valencia, several in the south of Castellón province and a handful in northern Alicante province also celebrate the Fallas festival, meaning over half the residents in the Comunidad Valenciana region live in a town where the fiesta happens. And the region is not willing to let 2020 go down as the first year in most of our lifetimes when the Fallas failed to happen. For this reason, the health authority and other regional government figures are considering moving the Fallas to between 15th – 19th July. Anyone who has purchased a train season ticket for Fallas week will get a refund if they apply, or the option to switch it for different dates.

Alcoholics Anonymous What is AA? Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. There are no dues or fees for AA membership, they are self supporting through their own contributions. AA is not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organisation or institution, does not wish to engage in any controversy, neither endorses nor opposes any causes. The AA’s primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety. Throughout 2020, each month, the Costa Blanca People is going to share a real life story from real people about what it is like to suffer from Alcoholism, what they did to overcome their addiction, and how they lead their lives today on their road of recovery. Do you have a problem with Alcohol? Is Alcohol costing you more than money? If you can answer yes to one or both of these questions, contact the AA for help. 40 years sober My name is Michael and I am an alcoholic, sober now for over forty years

due to the grace of a Higher Power and the 12-step program of Alcoholics Anonymous. I was born in Ireland into a comfortable middle-class home where my parents were originally trades people who had opened several businesses. Both parents were non-drinkers and the only alcohol in the home was some dusty bottles of spirits held for visitors. I started in the primary section of the local college around seven years of age, and although of average intelligence struggled fearfully to fit in and complete homework studies. This is my first recollection of fear and it was to become a dominant force in my personality, and it prevented me from enjoying social and sporting activities like any normal teenager. I believe I did not mature emotionally in line with age and lacked self-confidence and had a low selfimage. When I was fifteen years of age I was at a teenage party, circulating so as not to

have to interact with others and went downstairs to the basement where there were older boys from my college who were drinking. They offered me the bottle of whiskey for a drink which I took because I was afraid to refuse and appear childish. The effect was immediate, and I felt good and confident and able. After a few “ slugs” I went back upstairs and took some more drink and danced with the girls and joked with the boys……I had arrived and knew I had found the answer to my social backwardness. From then on I tried to get drink whenever I could, not easy when attending school and with limited money. I took to petty thieving, stealing new books and selling them to secondhand bookstores. There were other instances where my personality changed, unknown to me but not to others. Within a year the college dean told my parents that I become a boarder, where they would control me, or get expelled. I became a boarder, the only

Dublin boarder, as my home was about 400 metres away. I completed my schooling, achieving a standard below my parents’ expectations and went to live in London in the home of a boarder whose parents had emigrated, and my drinking really took off and I got into several scrapes that I was lucky to get out of intact. In Ireland I had started a relationship with a pretty girl and after a couple of years away I returned to Ireland and the relationship developed to the point where we were engaged and then married, both aged twenty-three years old. During the next few years we had two children and many turbulent episodes due entirely to my drinking, were in debt and only the love my wife had for me kept the marriage going. My dependence on drinking continued and the home relationship deteriorated further. My wife went back working to make ends meet and I came home one day to find her with cases packed for herself and the children. She was leaving to stay with a close friend in London and I had to choose between my drinking and the family. I said I would do something about my drinking, without knowing what that was as it was simply a dishonest attempt to keep the family and home intact as she had managed to keep an air of respectability on the chaos of the home life. I had been told about AA from a cousin, a nurse who had been to the meetings and recommended them, so next morning I went to the city and phoned the AA office from a phone box, with a handkerchief over the phone in

case my voice was recognised , a classic case of alcoholic paranoia .I was directed to a meeting that night in a nearby village. I was a little late for the meeting and slipped in the back of the room. Whilst I was unsure of the structure, as people shared, I had a close identification and thought “maybe I have a problem with drink”. This identification was very strong and a man who became my first sponsor talked with me for a couple of hours afterwards. With difficulty I did not drink the next day and went to a meeting at night. This continued for a couple of weeks but although I had identified with members, I had not yet accepted my powerlessness and drank again. I went back to meetings after a couple of days as I knew from listening to the stories that AA had the answer. However, I was to drink again after a few months because my drink pattern of binge drinking led me to think I was not a “real alcoholic”. That last drink convinced me that after the first drink I was as powerless as the 24/7 drinker, and my recovery began when I accepted I had no defence against the first drink on my own resources. I had taken the first step in recovery. Since I joined AA on that winter’s night my life has been transformed, in my home and in myself as I had been damaged mentally and emotionally. The fellowship help and understanding I found in the rooms and the dependence on a Higher Power of my choosing loved me back into life again. It has made me very happy and I am forever grateful that I found AA. Michael

House market steady The average price of new and used housing in Spain continues the path of moderate growth by registering a yearon-year increase of 2.4% in February, according to the IMIE General and Large Markets statistics prepared by the real estate valuation company Tinsa. From the lowest point of the cycle, reached in February 2015, the average price in Spain has increased by 16.6% and accumulates a drop of 33.1% from the highs of 2007. “The situation of stable values continues in February, with general figures very similar to those of January. In recent months, only the group of capitals and large cities seems to maintain a trend of appreciation, although more moderate,” says Rafael Gil, director of the Tinsa Research Department. Compared to the general index, which remained on the same line as in January, with a slight decrease of 0.1 percent in February compared to the previous month, 'Balearic and Canary Islands' is the index that has experienced the highest growth between January and February, specifically 5.9

With the current health situations, and warnings going on around the world right now with the Coronavirus Covid -19, you shouldn’t stop searching for your future home. This virus will not be around forever, and neither will the home you wish to buy! Especially thanks to the internet. With detailed videos available showcasing homes for sale, buyers from around the world are still able to reserve a property to buy, even without being here to see it in person. We’ve been taking offers over the phone! Unusual? Yes! Unheard of? No! It’s just a modern way of buying a home. People are using technology to their advantage. And good for them too! Want to see what the street looks like, without being here? No problem! You can use Google Earth! Ask your Real Estate Agent these 3 important questions, to help guide you with your online property search:

1

What’s the street name? If the agent can provide you with a street name, all you need to do is go online and input the address into your search bar. Then

percent, which places the growth rate in the last 12 months at 7.6 percent. Metropolitan areas also increased upward in the last month (1.9 percent between January and February), while the rest of the indexes experienced inter-monthly falls, of 3.1 percent compared to January on the Mediterranean coast, of 1.2 percent in capitals and large cities, and 0.4 percent in inland towns grouped in the 'Rest of municipalities' index. In the balance of the last 12 months, in addition to the 7.6 percent increase experienced in the islands, capital cities and large cities stand out in intensity of growth, with a 3.3 percent increase in the interannual rate. The Mediterranean coast increased its average price by 1.4 percent in the last year, while the 'Rest of municipalities' index increased it slightly, by 0.6 percent. The islands and 'Capitals and big cities' are the indices that have experienced a greater dynamism in prices since the lowest part of the cycle, registering increases of 27.5 percent and 27.1 percent, respectively, from their lows in

the crisis. On the Mediterranean coast and in the metropolitan areas, the advance in the average price is 15.2 percent and 12.9 percent, respectively, from the inflection point. Smaller indoor towns grouped in 'Rest of municipalities' have barely increased the average value by 5.6 percent from its minimum, well below the 16.6 percent that the Spanish average has revalued. The average price of new and Spain in housing used accumulates a decrease of 33.1 percent from the maximums recorded in 2007. Metropolitan interior smaller areas, municipalities and capitals and large cities falls 39.6 percent, 34.9 percent and 32.1 percent, respectively. On the islands, the gap is from maximum is reduced to 16.5 percent. Other indicators The Tinsa IMIE General and Large Markets index includes a selection of other relevant real estate and economic indicators to analyze the evolution and perspectives of the residential sector. This is the Market Flash with the latest data available to date.

click on maps. It really is that simple. You can then “virtually” walk yourself up and down the road the property is located on.

2

What are the room sizes? If you have access to every room size, you can quite comfortably sit in your own home, tape measure in hand, and compare your room measurements. It will give you a great indication of the actual size of the home. If you’re anything like me, I always find it more useful to know the sizes of individual rooms, rather than the total build size, as you could see a home with an exceptionally large lounge with tiny bedrooms. You wouldn’t be aware of this, if you only had the total square meterage of overall build size.

3

Is there a video showcasing every room? This is definitely the best way to “virtually” see the home, without being here in person. Still images can be “photoshopped” (altered) but videos will show every detail. If you’re actively searching for your home online, you are most definitely not the only one! There are lots of like minded people out there. All looking to get their “virtual” hands on a deal, before someone else beats them to it. Buying? Enjoy the “virtual” journey!

If you yearn for space but can’t afford more than a shoeboxsized apartment, a new job is offering the best of both worlds as a luxury homes reviewer. Shopping site HushHush is currently seeking luxury homes testers, who will be paid to review properties submitted from around the world. According to the job listing, chosen candidates will be required to stay in each home for a week at a time, and will earn £2,000 (2,300e) for each house they review. Currently, the site’s property listings include a “luxury Chateau on the French Riviera, a 25-

bedroom Spanish villa, an oceanfront home in Florida’s exclusive Ocean Reef Club and a 14,000 sq ft mansion in the Pacific Heights neighbourhood of San Francisco” - so applicants can expect to stay in similar luxurious accommodations. From the applicants, the site will choose between five and ten property testers, who will each be required to visit around 10 to 15 properties a year. While some relaxing will likely be involved, testers will also have to put together a detailed 800word report for each home based on the property’s location, accessibility, style, comfort and

suitability for the website within five days of returning home. For those interested in the opportunity, applying is easy, with HushHush asking applicants to fill out a submission form here. To be chosen for the opportunity, applicants must have an up-to-date passport, have no prior criminal convictions, be able to conduct reviews at short notice, and be able to demonstrate “reliability, a keen eye for detail and good writing skills”. According to the site, chosen applicants will be contacted in the coming weeks.

Writers' Ink Spot The weekly short story by Writers' Ink, a dedicated and rapidly expanding group of internationally published and non-published writers who take pleasure in helping and encouraging each other and members of our wider international circle. We meet on the second Monday of each month at 11am in the 'Friendly' Bar, CC Citrus, La Florida, Costa Blanca South. We are more than happy to welcome new budding writers, experienced published Authors or anyone who has an interest in writing to our group.

The frozen, midwinter night sky was alive with sparkling starlight but the magical sight was lost on Gallus and Ariette - his wife - in their desperate flight from the marauding Northmen. Deathly screams and sickening thuds of iron cleaving flesh and bone harried their desperate flight towards Northey as they crossed the slimy, hoar iced wooden bridge leading to the higher ground. The fire beacons had raised the alarm but too late as the Vikings were born to raid creeks and inlets of the Fenn Blackwater. Mike pulled his old Ford fiesta into the passing bay by the old stone bridge: killed the engine and removed his metal detector from the boot. “Do we have to do this now Dad?” Complained Dana, Mike’s teenage daughter. “Mum wants us home in time for Corrie - with the fish and chips.”

“It won’t take long. The farmer’s just finished ploughing. I need to get in before any ‘nighthawks.’ I won’t let those bastard night raiders get the jump on one of my sites again.” Across the Nene, Gallus could see the ghostly figures of the Vikings roaring, as their savagery swept through the burning Worth: the timber palisade was no defence against their violent assault. He caught Ariette as she stumbled. Gallus put his supportive hand around her waist and felt the sodden fur of her mortal wound. But before he could speak, she groaned and almost fainted. “I am so sorry Gallus,” she gasped. Gallus heart broke. “Not far – we shelter under the Ravens’ Yews.” Mike wasn’t to be denied, he stormed up the hill. “Why here Dad? “Ravens. Ravens,” he replied as if it was obvious.

RAVENS’ CONSPIRACY by Ian Turney “What about Ravens?” “They love shiny things: Valuable shiny things. This was a big Raven’s roost in the dark ages – it’s their hoard site. I researched it. Good idea eh?” “You sure, Dad? Isn’t it Jackdaws that nick things? I saw it on the TV.” Mike hesitated. His daughter’s words had an echo of truth. But he was not to be denied his earlier belief, he mumbled, “Same type of bird.” Ariette and Gallus collapsed under the deep black shadow of a big yew

and leaned against a large boulder. Ariette was fading fast: Gallus tears ran unabated, carving scars through his grim smoke-stained countenance. He accepted the inevitable but would not be separated from his childhood love. One last act before he would join with her. Gallus drew his knife and stabbed the ground to bury their jewels and rings together – to outwit the ‘Warags’. His fingers then tore at the yew foliage from a branch. Chewing on the leaves and seeds he

drew Ariette close to him – a final gentle kiss – they lay back spellbound by the beautiful heavens where they would journey together. After two hours of Dana nagging him about time – her phone pinging texts from mum demanding to know where they were – Mike collapsed in a sweaty heap onto a rock. He couldn’t understand it, grumbling to himself. “Bloody nothing.” Mike thumped his detector on the ground in frustration: It squealed in protest? © Ian Turney

AlicanteElche airport wins 'best in Europe' Alicante-Elche airport has been named the best in Europe in its category – terminals with between five and 15 million annual passengers – according to the Airport Council International (ACI). Every year, Airport Service Quality (ASQ) awards are given out to the top European terminals and, in the case of the one serving the Costa Blanca, it was competing against some of the best-known on the continent. Alicante-Elche beat Birmingham, Bristol, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Rome Ciampino, Milan Bergamo, Gothenburg, and Budapest. It won the award once before, in 2018 – five years after signing up to the ACI's service quality programme. The ASQ is stringent and demanding, and to meet its standards, an exceptionally-high level of service offered is required in order to achieve or exceed 34 specific criteria. Those who achieve it can legitimately claim to being on a par with the world's best airports of a similar size in terms of passenger traffic. To help it in its bid to meet ASQ criteria, Alicante-Elche worked

hard over 2019 to add extra benefits for travellers. Increasing and restructuring security gates, so passengers could get to their boarding gates quicker without having to queue, a complete new range of restaurants, a free personal shopper service, improved rest areas – more comfortable seating, a relaxation and reading zone, and an increased number of seats – are some of the steps taken last year to remove the hassle from flying. Airport manager Laura

Navarro says ASQ surveys are carried out regularly at the terminal throughout the year to find out what passengers want in an 'increasingly demanding climate', and to help the airport adapt to suit the needs of different traveller profiles. Distinctions were granted to other airports in Spain which,

although they did not win ASQ awards, received special mentions. Those in the category for fewer than two million annual passengers were the airports in San Sebastián (Basque Country), El Hierro (Canary Islands), and the coastal enclave of Melilla attached to northern Morocco. Menorca airport received a distinction in the category for terminals with between two and five million annual passengers. The prestigious ACI has 668 corporate and State members operating 1,979 airports in 176 countries - in fact, last year, over half the world's 8.8 billion passengers flew to, from, or via an ASQ airport. Award-winning airports will send representatives to the prize-giving this coming September in Krakow (Poland). Alicante-Elche airport is used by travellers to and from the entire province of Alicante, especially its coast, known as the Costa Blanca, and is also an alternative option for passengers closer to MurciaCervera and Valencia-Manises airports, potentially giving them a wider choice of flights. Most of the key low-cost airlines fly to the London airports from Alicante-Elche.

Comedian Ramsey to host big new BBC talent show Chris Ramsey became a household name when he strutted his stuff to the semifinal of Strictly Come Dancing 2019 along with Karen Hauer, and now the comedian-turned-dancer has landed another exciting BBC role. It's been announced that Chris is set to host the live shows of the brand new entertainment show Little Mix The Search, in which pop superstars Little Mix aim to find the next great band of singers. Chris said of his new role: “Since the

moment I heard their first single, I knew I wanted to be the fifth member of Little Mix... sadly it looks like I’m going to have to settle for just hosting their new show with them!” Little Mix The Search will see the multiaward winning group, made up of Perrie Edwards, Jesy Nelson, Jade Thirlwall and Leigh-Anne Pinnock, creating bands and becoming mentors to a new wave of talent. The singers who make it into new

bands will live together and gain access to Little Mix’s inner circle who have contributed to their phenomenal success, including vocal coaches, song writers and producers. Little Mix seems thrilled about Chris' appointment. The band said: “We’re so happy Chris has come on board to present The Search. He’s genuinely one of the funniest people we know and he’ll bring loads of his South Shields charm to the show. We can’t wait.”

Pizza vending machines hit Spain

CostaBlancaPeople 17th - 23rd March 2020

Third Military air tragedy over Mar Menor

Spain’s first-ever on-street pizza vending machines have gone live – in Málaga city, Girona and in the Basque province of Guipúzcoa - with up to 12 varieties on offer and very reasonable prices. Pizzorro, owned and run by JeanDaniel Hagolle, is already popular in France with around 750 vending points. The machines operate 24 hours a day and are stocked up with around 70 precooked pizzas in a refrigeration compartment which, once you put your money or debit card in and make your Eagle Patrol display team

choice, are heated up and ready to dispense within three minutes. Prices range from €5.90 to €8. Hagolle says they are 'just as good as any you would buy in a restaurant' and are made with 'fresh ingredients'. A computer programme inside the vending machine monitors use-by dates and cooking instructions, and keeps track of how many of each type are still left, so they can be topped up regularly. At the moment, Hagolle is the only person with the legal rights to set up a Pizzorro vending machine, but with three now in Spain, he is expected to start to roll them out elsewhere in the country – so watch out for one near you.

THE Spanish Air Force has provisionally suspended all aerobatic exhibitions of its ‘Eagle Patrol’ display team after three consecutive fatal accidents within six months. In a statement revealed by the Air Force, the team will cancel upcoming events to further understand the causes of these accidents and to put new procedures into place to prevent further incidents. The cancellation will also allow the team to enrol a replacement for Commander Eduardo Garvalena, a key figure in the display team and one that performs manoeuvres that require unique skills. Normal procedures require that a pilot trains his or her successor; however Garvalena’s successor, Commander Francisco Marin, was also killed in an accident six months earlier near the team’s base in San Javier, Murcia. So far, investigators have not found

the cause of the accidents but have not ruled out mechanical failures of the 40-year-old CASA C-101 aircraft and questions have been asked of the usability of aircraft as well as the flight hours that pilots endure. The Spanish General Air Academy is unique in the fact that pilots must juggle their preparation for their spectacular air displays with teaching and training flights. Sources inside the academy have claimed that extended flight hours have had a huge effect on the pilots. In the wake of the accidents, the Air Force will take the withdrawal from the team’s display season, May to October, as an opportunity to review its training program to ease the workload of both pilots and aircraft. The cancellations will ground the fleet for all aerobatic displays this summer but they will still perform the traditional ‘Flag Painting in the Sky’ for Spain’s National Armed Forces Day.

State of alarm will last more than 15 days Spain’s Transport Minister José Luis Ábalos has said that the state of alert put in place by the Cabinet on Saturday would “last more than the 15 days” initially established. Speaking to the state radio network RNE, the minister explained that two weeks would not be enough for Spain to “win the battle” against the SARS-CoV-2 Coronavirus, which has so far cost the lives of 294 people in Spain and caused more than 7,900 infections. The Madrid government announced on Monday that it believes that a fall in the number of new infections will only start to be registered in the region in around 10 days, by 25th March, while the

number of patient discharges will begin to exceed the number of new contagions around 15th April. Speaking on TVE, Finance Minster María Jesús Montero sought to assure the Spanish public that there was no shortage of basic goods and foodstuffs in order to deal with the crisis. “But the Health Ministry has to be prepared to assign those resources where they are necessary, and when they are necessary,” she said. The central government has widespread powers under the state of alarm that will allow it, among other measures, to take over industries or businesses where necessary to ensure the supply of essential items.

Arranging a funeral abroad can be complicated – here’s how to make it simple Find out why it’s worth preplanning your funeral as an expat so you can enjoy your life in the sun Arranging a funeral is a stressful experience, but when you’re navigating a foreign funeral system, it can be even more difficult. When the time comes, will your loved ones know how to arrange a funeral in Spain? The Spanish funeral system can catch many expats unaware. Traditionally, Spanish funerals happen as quickly as 24 to 48 hours after the person passes away. Funerals for expats can take longer, especially if friends and family want to fly out, but this delay could cost hundreds of Euros in extra mortuary expenses. In addition, it’s common for Funeral Directors in Spain to request either part or full payment upfront. Then there’s the language barrier to deal with, along with unfamiliar processes. That’s why it’s so helpful to plan ahead to make things a little easier. Make funeral arrangements simple

Whether you live in Spain the whole year round, or have a summer home here, a prepaid funeral plan lets you make everything simpler for your loved ones when the time comes. IS YOUR HOME HAUNTED? What type of buildings can be haunted? Although most people that you would ask about this one would say old properties, or buildings that houses many people such as Prisons, hospitals, Castles etc, the reality is, that ANY property can be haunted – even modern ones. However, the likelihood is that more old properties tend to have the ‘haunted feeling’ about them, as they have more history and habitation than newer buildings.

behind you • Feelings of being touched by unseen hands • Feelings of the hair on back of neck standing up • Feelings of cobwebby fingers on your face/body • Feeling a cold breeze as if someone has walked past you • Dark depressing feeling especially in one particular area

What feelings does one have in a ‘haunted’ property? • Feelings of being watched or ‘spied on’ • Feelings of someone standing close

What signs indicate that the building is haunted? • Lights turning on and off or up and down on own • Light bulbs blowing frequently

• Sounds of items being dropped but when you go to investigate there is nothing there • Seeing unexplained shadows from the corner of your eye • Strange behaviour from pets in the property – e.g., dogs barking or growling at something you cannot see, cats staring in a particular area as if they can see someone. • Hearing voices of people, whispers, or someone calling your name • Seeing twinkling lights, mists or unexplained moving shapes • Sudden temperature drops especially in one area of the property

Why is it the most tasty dishes are full of creams, butter, cheese or maybe you want to boost your immune system with some nourishing nutrients...here are some healthy options to help you cook up a few culinary delights:

Green Frittata Ingredients spinach 80g frozen peas 75g eggs 4 olive oil 2 tsp streaky bacon 2 rashers, thinly sliced garlic 1 clove, thinly sliced red chilli ½, deseeded and thinly sliced roasted red peppers from a jar 2, chopped mature cheddar 35g, grated rocket dressed, to serve

Health & Beauty

CostaBlancaPeople 17th - 23rd March 2020

Method STEP 1 Put the spinach into a colander and pour over 1 /2 a kettle of just-boiled water to wilt. Leave until cool enough to handle then squeeze as much water as possible. Tip into a small blender or food processor. STEP 2 Put the peas into a small bowl, pour over enough just-boiled water to cover, leave

for 2-3 minutes, then drain. Add to the spinach in the blender with one of the eggs and lots of seasoning. Whizz until completely smooth, then add in the remaining eggs and pulse until combined. STEP 3 Heat the grill to medium-high. Heat the oil in a small non-stick, ovenproof frying pan and fry the bacon for 5 minutes until crisp. Add the garlic and chilli, and cook for 2 minutes, then tip in the spinach mixture. Cook gently for a minute until the bottom is set, then sprinkle the red peppers over the top. Cook for another few minutes until the bottom is lightly golden. Sprinkle with the cheddar and put under the grill for 2-3 minutes until cooked through and golden on top. Cut into wedges and serve with the dressed rocket.

baby plum tomatoes 300g, halved chickpeas 400g tin, drained and rinsed olive oil 3 tbsp smoked paprika 1 tsp cod loin fillets 4 pieces (about 125g each) flat-leaf parsley a small bunch, chopped lemon wedges to serve crusty bread to serve Method STEP 1 Heat the oven to 190C/fan 170C/gas 5. Put the garlic, chilli (if using), tomatoes and chickpeas in a baking dish and add the olive oil and paprika. Toss together then roast for 10 minutes. Sit the cod on top, season, then put back in the oven for another 10-15 minutes or until the cod is cooked through and flakes easily. Scatter with parsley and serve with lemon wedges and crusty bread.

Chilli beef and noodle soup

One pot Paprika cod & Chickpeas Ingredients garlic 1 clove, finely sliced red chilli 1, finely sliced (optional)

Ingredients spring onions 4, sliced garlic 2 cloves, lightly crushed ginger a large chunk, sliced coriander seeds 2 tsp cinnamon stick 1 star anise 2 dried red chillies 2 chicken stock 2 litres sirloin steak 350g, fat removed and sliced chilli flakes a pinch Chinese five-spice a pinch oil

37

mixed radishes 16, trimmed and large ones halved ready-to-eat rice or egg or wheat noodles 300g fish sauce 1 tbsp, plus more to serve lime 1, plus wedges to serve coriander a handful of leaves

Method STEP 1 Put the spring onion, garlic, ginger, spices, dried chilli and chicken stock in a pan and simmer, cook for 10 minutes, then strain into a clean pan. STEP 2 Toss the steak strips with the chilli flakes and five-spice, then fry them in a drizzle of oil in a wok over a high heat so they brown and caramelise at the edges. Tip out and fry the radishes in another tbsp oil until they’re tender, about 10 minutes. Reheat the stock and add the noodles, fish sauce and lime juice. Divide between 4 deep bowls and add some beef, radishes and coriander to each. Season with more lime and fish sauce, if you like.

TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Whoa, hang on a minute there. I’m pretty sure that when we (and by we, I mean those of us trying to come up with anything witty to suggest even Liverpool couldn’t close the title out from here) started saying the only thing that could stop Jurgen Klopp’s lot winning the Premier League title was this damn virus we were all kidding. We certainly were not being intentionally prophetic. Pathetic, sure. Prophetic, rarely. Are we really in a situation where we enter the second half of 2020 with the score remaining Covid-19, Liverpool 18? Credit to Paul Pogba, not something I say very often, but he was way ahead

of all of us on this one being in selfisolation since mid-August and can we be completely sure that this isn’t all an elaborate hoax cooked up by Man City so that everyone forgets that they’ve been kicked out of Europe for the next two seasons?

Those lines across the pitch to decide offside would still be science-fiction - I know, this is growing on you, right? Watford would save a fortune in compensation on the two other managers they’ve had to sack this season. Jose Mourinho would get even longer to go away and become a changed man - his exile since being sacked by Man United clearly wasn’t long enough.

Paul Pogba

We have to accept that we are in a situation that might see the 2019/20 season declared null and void - and for anyone foolish enough to have followed my column since the start of the season you’d probably consider that a good thing. What if 2019/20 didn’t actually happen? I mean, it wouldn’t be all bad (if you put the global crisis to one side for a moment and just look at the following). VAR wouldn’t have utterly screwed up the Premier League this season the beautiful game would not be tainted by incompetent referees making the wrong calls having seen them 100 times in slow motion. We’d just be back to incompetent referees making the wrong calls having almost seen them once.

Harry Kane

Harry Kane would be less thrilled though, he’d still have not scored a Premier League goal for Tottenham in August - but then he might avoid the injuries that would see him miss Euro 2020 (in the pretend world where Euro 2020 actually happens in 2020).

Three ‘2’s today Alan Douglas which went to Ken Robertson (again), Alan Douglas and Peter Shervell. For those of you who may be wondering how I’m getting on with ‘Camera Club’ I managed to delete 35 landscape snaps before I got them onto

On that note, the whole Wagatha Christie thing would be wiped from the social media archives - is it worth that sacrifice?

Everton would have to start the season with Marco Silva in charge, meaning Big Sham Allarfarce would have something to gripe about when he’s on with Keysey and Gray in Dubai.

Aston Villa might realise that they need more than Jack Grealish to stay up but signing 20 players is not the way forward - especially Pepe Reina a man so determined to destroy his Liverpool legacy weekly he is a danger to himself.

Arsenal would have to start the season with Unai Emery which, frankly, could be even more car-crash the second time around. Mind you, at least Mesut Ozil could continue upping his Fortnite game rather than actually having to play football.

West Ham would get the opportunity to look slightly further afield than David Moyes when it comes to the time to sack Manuel Pellegrini. Eddie Howe might be having a better season than this one so could be worth a punt.

Steve Bruce would get to start the season again at Newcastle and become even more popular with Mike Ashley by warning him £40m for Joelinton would be a massive waste of money.

And, of course, Liverpool would not be 25 points clear in the Premier League. They’d have to start again, on zero. The ultimate rage quit without saving on Football Manager when you are Pep Guardiola and results have gone against you. But it wouldn’t be all bad Liverpool fans, you’d still be Champions of Europe.

Peppy G would still be the current Premier League champion and his biggest worry would be how he can finally win the Champions League - if this whole wipe out 2019/20 catches on, they might be able to delete those emails that the hacker got hold of as

Results for w/c 9.3.20

No fewer than 28 of us lined up for Wednesday’s Stableford. Alan Douglas took the glory with a modest 34 points and behind him, on countback with 33, was his wife Olga and Lindsay Forbes (beware the injured golfer)!

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer might be able to persuade Mr Ed that spending a lot of money on Bruno Fernandes before the season starts rather than halfway through would be a good idea. He might also not ask Marcus Rashford to play matches with a stress fracture in his back this time around.

Brentan could start the season again committing to not tinkering come December and watching the wheels come off their chase for second place at Leicester.

Frank Lampard’s Chelsea would still be under a transfer embargo meaning the kids could go and play without the threat of January signings making them too scared in the final third.

Las Ramblas Golf Society With a very respectable 43 points, Pat Cassidy and Petina Murray took the honours in Monday’s 2 ball better ball. Close on their heels, with 42, were John Shervell together with HendrickOldenziel.

the computer! With 88 points it was Nick Campbell alongside RegAkehurst and John and Ellen Drakesmith who laid claim to the ‘Glitter Ball’ in Friday’s 1-2-3 Waltzer. With 85, in the ‘Dance Off’, were Graham and Petina Murray together with Pete Dunn and Paul Brown. It could well have been Richard Connock who once said, ‘I may well be the only golfer never to have broken a single putter; if you don’t count the one I twisted into a loop and threw into a bush.’ Pues hasta la semana que viene Peter Reffell

On a beautiful Spanish morning, due to illnesses and visits to the U.K., only five members turned out for a Stableford competition. A close run game ended with Club Captain, David Swann pipping previous Captain, Mike Davies by one point. Nearest the pins – Hole 2, Mike Davies. Hole 6, Ray Housley Second place, Handicap 12 – Mike Davies – 34 points (C/B). First place, Handicap 11, David Swann – 35 points.

ELCHE CF a brief club history Elche Club de Fútbol was founded in the summer of 1923, and played their first league season in 1929–30, in the 3rd Division. They achieved promotion to Segunda Division 11 years later in 1934. In 1959 Elche CF gain their first promotion into La Liga, where they stayed for the next 12 seasons until 1971. Elche achieved their best-ever La Liga finish in 1963-64, ranking in 5th position. The season also saw the club's reserve team, Elche Ilicitano, promoted to the Segunda Division. In 1969 the club reached their first and only Copa del Rey final, which they played on June 15th at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium resulted in a 0–1 loss to Atheltic Bilbao. Elche was relegated to division two in 1971 having finished second from bottom and spentmost of the 70’s and 80’s yo-yoing between the two divisions, and most of the 90’s and 00’s in the second division. In 2013 the Elche squad and

fans celebrated their return to La Liga after an absence of 24 years. During the 2013–14 season, the team managed to

keep in the top competition, with an average attendance to home matches estimated at 25,104 people. In the 2014–15 season, despite managing once again to keep in the top flight (the team was already safe from relegation

four dates before the end of the competition) Elche become the first team ever in the history of the Spanish Primera División to be relegated to Segunda following new regulations by the Spanish football league limiting excess debt and economic mismanagement. In the 2016–17 season, Elche were relegated again to the third level. Promotion is very hard to achieve as the division is a regional one, with Spain being split into 4 categories, so teams don’t have to travel far. After just 1 season in June 2018 Elche achieved that promotion. In the 6 play off games they beat Murcia on aggregate 4-2, they beat Sporting Gijon on aggregate 4-2, and then they beat Villareal B on aggregate 32. Elche CF started the 2018/19 season in the Segunda B and EuroTourGuide started our Coach Tours to support them at their home matches.

1st Tony Macmillan with 9.240kgs 2nd Nick Bastock with 7.380kgs 3rd Mick Hill with 5.660kgs The pairs were won by Nick Bastock and Tony Macmillan with a combined weight of 16.620kgs This is the last match we will be able to fish here for a while, as the Murcia Federation has cancelled all fishing matches in the Murcia Region due to the Corona virus All details are available on our website www.abbeyangling.es or from me on 965328368

Ruby´s Golf Society Our first Trophy game of 2020 took us to our local course Vistabella, the weather was not conducive for good golf as there was very high winds that day, however the course was in excellent condition and all the players were looking forward to our first competitive game, and despite the weather there was some very good scores submitted. The results were as follows; Nearest the pins on the par 3's were Mark Foden, Sue Foden, David Gray and Theresa Wright, nearest the pin in two was David Gray.

ABBEY ANGLING It was our 1st round of the Spring Series which we fished on the 10th March on the River Segura at Murcia. It was a lovely warm day with no wind, the time of year has arrived when the sun reaches onto the road warming it up and making fishing much more comfortable. Once again the end pegs dominated the match, with the top two weights coming off the Crystal Bridge. Tony Macmillan fishing the feeder using pellet to take the top spot with 9.240kgs, Nick Bastock drawn at the other end fishing the feeder using pellet for the second place with 7.380kgs, and following up in third was Mick Hill with 5.660kgs fishing the feeder and orange wafter
