Hope for tourism sector Alicante-Elche airport can now receive international flights, both incoming and outgoing, it was announced at the weekend. The Minister of Transport, José Luis Ábalos, said the government has fulfilled the commitment it made on Friday with the Generalitat and the CEV. Over the weekend, flights to Oslo, Stockholm and Kiev departed from Alicante. Next weekend there are more flights to Scandinavia scheduled. The planes will also be able to bring Scandinavian people, who can prove that they have their second residence in the Alicante province or have dual citizenship, here to Spain. Legislation issued last week limits passenger flights originating outside of Spanish territory and designates Spain’s ports and airports as "entry points with the capacity to attend public health emergencies of international importance". However, in order to better manage the state of emergency, there is provision in the legislation that each autonomous community has limited power to modify the list of allowed entry points. Based on this provision, the autonomous communities of Andalusia, the Canary Islands, the Balearic Islands and the Valencian Community have requested that the Ministry of Health expand the list of working airports. losses in the sector reached one billion euro so hoteliers will be trying a number of avenues to encourage Spaniards to take holidays at home this year. Other chains such as SH hotels are offering specific discounts of 40% for health personnel and security forces and have already launched a 'Heroes without a cape' campaign which allows those who have worked on the front line to enjoy a 40% discount on overnight stays at any of the chain's hotels until December 30. Borders and airspace in the EU should be open again from July and tour operators have already been selling flights and holiday packages, but in the case of the Costa Blanca, the sector here has to contend with another problem: 40% of total tourism in municipalities such as Benidorm comes from the United Kingdom, the country most affected (next to the US) by the global pandemic. The tourism industry, and the raft of other local businesses which rely on its success, will have to wait in hope of a recovery before the end of the year.

emergency and infection in the respective Autonomous Community and its ability to react to eventual risks associated with the proposed measure, according to the BOE. Requests submitted by regional governments throughout Saturday and Sunday were reviewed by central government and the decision to include Alicante-Elche airport as an entry point to Spain was taken. Requests were also made successfully by Seville, Menorca, Ibiza, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, Tenerife South and Valencia. Hope on the horizon Last month was the worst April in the history of Costa Blanca tourism due to the closure of hotels and the cancellation of flights. However, tourism officials have revealed that during April, 73,000 foreign tourists searched for airline tickets to visit the Costa Blanca later this year. A report by the Generalitat Valenciana on the tourism situation has revealed that

during the last two weeks of the worst April in history, over 75,000 foreign tourists used flight search portals with the intention of buying a ticket to fly to the Costa Blanca later this year, specifically between September and October. Of the total figure looking to visit, 42,573 were Germans, 27,696 from the United Kingdom and 4,834 Belgians. The data, it is widely hoped, reveals an expected recovery of the arrival of foreign tourists for the end of the year. Hoteliers believe that the mediumterm priority market (July and August) will be mainly domestic tourism and to this end, they are preparing special offers for residential tourists. A drop in prices has been ruled out, but other incentives are being tabled such as free "spa" treatments and, for example, free parking for the duration of stays being offered by the Servigroup chain, given that 80% of national tourists will holiday using their own car. In April, with everything closed,

Virtual races sweep the Vega Baja Runners, athletes and hopefuls across the Vega Baja have been enjoying a novel pastime during lockdown – virtual races. The most recent was a head to head contest between Los Montesinos and San Miguel where both towns challenged runners to a 3 kilometre race. The 419 participants used the Strava app to time their distance and speed in order to ‘race’ one another in a virutal setting. Participants raced individually, respecting the rules of social distancing in place due to Covid-19. Organisers said that the race as such a huge success because of the scrupulous respect by participants of the guidelines. Runners kept their distance from one another and stuck rigorously to government approved exercise timetable. The Councillor for Sport of Los Montesinos, Ana Belén Juárez, was delighted to report that the top spots for both female and male runners were taken by runners from Los Montesinos Ana María López Moralez, who ran the 3k distance in 12.27 minutes, and Álex González Espinosa, who did it in 8.46 minutes. Women were very well represented in the race with 59% of those taking part from Los Montesinos were women.

Both Sports councillors from San Miguel and Los Montesinos were thrilled with the success of the event, which aimed to promote physical activity during a very uncertain time. "That is why it was very important that the rules and schedules were respected, and it was so: everyone complied with the safety distance and left at the appropriate times for sports in each municipality," said Councillor Juárez. Both town halls will send diplomas for the three fastest and the first in each category, so that they can have a commemorative memory of their ‘virtual’ podium finish. Meanwhile, Torrevieja is set to host a similar event on the weekend of May 23rd and 24th. A charity 5k race in aid of Caritas and Alimentos Solidarios has been organised by Club Atletismo Puerto Torrevieja. A club spokesperson said, “As a club we want to do our bit for this situation and

we know of no other way than creating a charity sporting event.” There is a symbolic registration fee of just €3 per participant (with the option of donating more if you wish) with all proceeds going to the charities which are helping people in need right now.

Where can I run? You can run anywhere, not only in Torrevieja – the race is open to all athletes who wish to participate. The race will be through the streets of your town, all you have to do is make sure to measure 5K and save it with a GPS watch or mobile device. As such, athletes from anywhere are welcome to take part as long as local rules regarding social distancing and exercise timetables are respected. When can I run? The 5K race can be completed on either Saturday 23 or Sunday 24, in order to avoid a large group of people running on the same day. How do I log my time? On the same website where you register to take part you will have a section to upload your time once the 5K is over. There will be a ranking with virtual prizes including a virtual finisher medal that will be sent by email. Where can I sign up? At the following website: https://www.alcanzatumeta.es/5kvirtual-puerto-de-torrevieja Organisers would also encourage participants to share photos of themselves taking part, both on Facebook and Instagram at @capuertotorrevieja

One step forward, two steps back for local bar owners Local bar owners were left frustrated and disappointed after being issued orders to close down after reopening during Phase 1 of the de-escalation. Some bars who were allowed to remain open were told to cancel all scheduled live music as only ambient music is allowed. The confusion seems to come from rules regarding the reopening of bar and restaurant terraces in commercial centres with many owners being told to close due to lack of main road access directly to the terrace. After a devastating couple of months, many bars and restaurants were able to reopen 50% of their terraces, as long as they applied social distancing rules and other guidelines such as restricting bathroom access, providing menu boards rather than shared menus etc. However, the light at the end of the tunnel dimmed at the weekend when many bars in commercial centres such as Los Dolses were told on Thursday they had to close down again. Then, just days later, the decision was reversed and some of those same bars and restaurants were told that they could in fact reopen. Venues with live music planned for this coming week have been left uncertain as ambient music is allowed, which some bar owners have interpreted to be acoustic artists or DJs playing ambient tunes. However, in some instances larger acts have had to cancel shows rather than take the risk of being fined. Owners hope that when the region enters phase 2, the rules will become clearer and that local businesses can begin recouping their losses.

Sánchez requests one last lockdown extension for one month Spain’s prime minister is seeking a final month-long extension of the emergency powers behind the country’s coronavirus lockdown, as tension with his political opponents reaches new heights. In an address to the nation on Saturday, Pedro Sánchez said a countrywide survey of infection rates had vindicated his government’s cautious approach to the lockdown, which has infuriated the regional authorities in Madrid. “Prudence should still be the rule . . . If we choose to give priority to business over health, we will end up losing both,” the Spanish prime minister said.

He argued that Spain’s coronavirus study had shown the seriousness of the disease and the impracticality of pursuing so-called herd immunity, a policy he said would have cost Spain 300,000 lives. On

He declared that the state of alarm, which was implemented on 14th March in a bid to slow the spread of the coronavirus, had worked. “The path that we are taking is the only one possible,” he said, in reference to the use of the state of alarm to give the government special powers, including recentralising healthcare from the regions to Madrid, and introducing the confinement measures that are still in place, and which have been among the strictest in the world.

Saturday the country reported the smallest daily death toll since the beginning of the lockdown: a two-month low of 102 people. Mr Sánchez added that the survey, which carried out antibody tests on more than 60,000 people, had shown that the “true lethality” of Covid-19 was one in a hundred and that without the lockdown 30m people could have been infected. At present, he said, the rate with which the virus was spreading was 0.24 percent a day, down from 35 percent at its peak.

Pedro Sánchez

The Socialist Party (PSOE) leader argued that the scientific facts have shown that a “herd immunity” approach would not have been successful, and defended the need to limit mobility and social contact. “That’s the logic behind the de-escalation process,” he explained. More than half of Spain was in Phase 1 of the government’s plan by the beginning of last week, with more areas joining yesterday (Monday 18th May). For now, the Madrid region and the city of Barcelona will remain in Phase 0, albeit with some loosening of restrictions. “The de-escalation could be finished in half of the country by the start of summer,” Sánchez added, repeatedly calling for prudence going forward. The Prime Minister also explained that his government would request one more extension to the state of alarm. “This extension will be different,” he said. “It is expected to be the last state of alarm. We are going to request in the Congress of Deputies that it lasts for a month.” The current state of alarm in Spain is due to expire on 24th May.

Lowest death rate in two months Spain on Sunday revealed the lowest number of daily deaths from Covid-19 in two months: 87. Health Ministry sources revealed that the figures for Spain are continuing to present well with 102 confirmed Covid-19 deaths on Saturday and 87 on Sunday. Sunday’s figure represents a new daily low, the lowest number since March 16 when there were 21 deaths from Covid19. In total, the number of people who have died from Covid-19 in Spain (when going to press) is 27,650. The figures were echoed by the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, during a video conference on Sunday with the regional presidents. Director of the Centre for Health Emergencies, Fernando Simón, said that the fact that for the first time in “a very long time” there have been fewer than one hundred deaths which “is good news, as hard as it always is to speak of deaths from this disease.” The day with the most deaths from Covid-19 in Spain was Thursday, April 2, with 950 deaths in one day.

Ryanair back in the air by July Low cost airline Ryanair is all set to bring back its Spanish routes by mid summer, it was revealed this week. The firm is hoping to resume operations on July 1st and will fill 40% of its usual routes. As such, flight frequency will be down by 60% but a number of Ryanair’s most popular routes will be resumed. The airline has been selling tickets online for the last two weeks and is waiting for the EU to lift restrictions on travel but it is generally assumed that flights will restart in July if Spain enters the ‘new normal’ phase after it completes its current phases of de-escalation. Ryanair currently has seven of its planes grounded in AlicanteElche airport with air traffic paralyzed due to the state of alarm. Since January of this year, two million passengers have passed through the terminal which is a 47% drop on figures for January to April of 2019. The airline ceased flights to and from Alicante in mid March. When flights resume, a series of health and safety measures will be implemented including a reduction in the number of bags checked in, online checking in of passengers, downloading a virtual boarding pass on to all passengers’ phones as well as the carrying out of temperature checks at the entrance to the airport. It is also believed that the wearing of masks during the flight will be mandatory.

Four out of five Alicante Covid19 patients have recovered 80% of all people who have been infected with Covid-19 in the Alicante province so far have already been cured. In terms of figures, the province is 30 percent above the nationwide average number of people cured and who have been discharged after suffering from covid-19. The average in Spain for patient recovery and discharge is 50% according to data provided in recent days by Health Minister Salvador Illa. Valencian Health Minister Ana Barceló revealed that active infections have been reduced to 23% in the whole of the Community. The Alicante province in particular shows promising figures with 20% positives compared to 25% in Castellón and Valencia. Barceló held a videoconference with Illa to discuss the intention that the

Interior surfaces will be disinfected when flights resume

In addition, the airline has specified that all of its planes are equipped with 'HEPA' air filters (similar to those used in hospital emergency rooms) and all the interior surfaces of planes are disinfected every night with chemical products.

The return of popular routes between Spain and the UK and Ireland, however, is subject to the lifting of restrictions on flights within Europe by governments and the application of effective public health measures at airports themselves.

whole of the Valencian Community progresses to phase 1 from yesterday (Monday, May 18). Despite this, Barceló urged "prudence", because we cannot forget "that we still have the virus among us". PCR tests began on Monday 11th in some health centres and GPs in some areas have begun taking appointments to administer PCR tests to patints who present symptoms of Covid-19. The total number of PCRs carried out towards the end of last week was between 3,000 and 4,000 per day in the whole of the Valencian Community, which is double the figure carried out a month ago, although the Minister still did not specify the amount of tests sent to health centres here, simply claiming "there are enough."

SELLING IN A PANDEMIC? FOCUS ON THESE 3 THINGS, NOW! Rebecca Serwotka Rebecca Serwotka - Your favourite local property expert, of Inmobiliaria Real Estate Agents in Ciudad Quesada & published author of “Moving Forward - 25 Essential Rules For Buying & Selling Real Estate Without Going Crazy.” Request your FREE copy today!Featured on Best Buy Spain - Property TV.

If you really want to attract that right buyer in today’s market, you need to focus on the outside of your property more than ever. Selling a home during a pandemic is forcing buyers to drive themselves to view properties instead of going with the Real Estate Agent, so the first impression is more important today than ever before. So let me ask you, does your home have curb appeal? Does it beckon the buyers inside for a closer look, or does it try to hide behind a wall of unkept landscaping and paint that’s peeling? If it doesn’t scream “bienvenido” (welcome) to every potential buyer as they do a drive-by, then you need to fix it right now. Here are 3 things you need to focus on, immediately: 1. If you’re in an apartment block, make sure the communal entrance is swept and cleaned every single day. Have a few flowers in neatly lined pots outside if possible. Greenery and flowers always have a welcoming appeal.

2. For properties with private entrances, make sure the boundary walls are freshly painted. If you have outside lighting, are they all the same type of bulb and do they all work? No burnt out lightbulbs! How does your driveway look? Are there weeds growing between the tiles? This is an easy fix! Remove the weeds and use a pressure washer to give it a fresh look. 3. Whatever style of property you’re selling, make sure the front door is looking its best! This is not the time for a scruffy, dirty or paint peeling entrance. You could also buy a new doormat, replace the hardware and make sure the house numbers are clean and clearly visible. Imagine yourself as a buyer. Take a walk across the street and look back at your property. What are your first thoughts? “Ooooh that looks nice!” Or, “keep on driving!” Buyer’s could drive past in the evening too, so if you have outside lights, make sure they’re on. Your home is on display morning, noon and night, so make it stand out for the right reasons. If you’re ready to sell your home, or are already on the market, head to www.80ThingsReport.com for my list of the “80 Things You Can’t Afford To Neglect When Selling Your Home!”

Shopping centres prepare to reopen Shopping centres across the Valencian Community are preparing to reopen to consumers amid huge losses experienced due to the global pandemic and the resulting enforced closures brought on by the State of Alarm in Spain. The likes of Habaneras in Torrevieja is gearing up for reopening with new hygiene protocols, cleaning schedules and safety measures to be put in place before shoppers return. Shopping centre managers are working towards May 25th, the provisional date on which the area should (if figures relating to the rate of infection here are deemed suitable) enter Phase 2 of the nationwide de-escalation plan. Bosses remain sceptical about whether they will definitely be allowed to open their doors on the 25th given the ever changing legislation and the fluid nature of the deescalation plan in order to allow local governments to progress or regress depending on the rate of infection and other related factors. Manager of the Gran Via shopping centre in Alicante, Javier Montejano indicated that the industry is not holding its breath “given that there have

been changing regulations throughout this coronavirus crisis.” However, the main commercial centres of the Alicante province are erring on the side of optimism and have been busy preparing safety and hygiene protocols in order that they are ready to implement a new way of shopping as soon as the ‘starting gun’ is heard. It is thought that 40% of client capacity will be allowed in when shopping centres first open and that management must invest in signage indicating security measures as well as more frequent cleaning. Once May 25th is here, the fate of shopping centres lies mostly in the hands of the consumer – especially native tourists. Cristina Palacios, head of the Habaneras shopping centre in Torrevieja, says that the potential recovery - or not - of the summer campaign “will depend on national tourism and the owners of second homes. If they will be able to come or not. This year's scenario is incomparable with a normal one.”

“This summer we have to out our faith in the national tourist," remarked José Palacios, manager of Plaza Mar 2, in Alicante. In a region that relies heavily on tourism, the consumer sector is fearful of a drop in numbers of foreign visitors due to flight restrictions and also “fear, in general” of consumers themselves who might not venture out to shop in the current climate. Currently, the Alicante province has 24 shopping centres, according to data from the Spanish Association of Shopping Centres. The association has expressed its discontent and concern “about the government's decision not to allow shopping centres to be fully opened until the second phase of the de-escalation plan,” - especially given that the sector generates more than 350,000 direct jobs. The association estimates that commercial centres here are suffering monthly losses of 3 billion euro, a figure revealed this week by the Association’s president Eduardo Ceballos.

Orihuela markets open with safety and hygiene measures On Friday, the Councillor for Markets, Víctor Bernabéu, visited the first market to reopen in the municipality located in Paseo Calvo Sotelo. All 11 markets that take place on different days across the municipality have tentatively reopened under strict safety and sanitation regulations during this state of alarm. Councillor Bernabéu said: "We have checked that all the measures adopted by the relevant departments have worked and are satisfied with the work done in the last weeks to ensure peoples safety.” Only food stalls are currently allowed to sell their wares and there has to be a safe distance between the stalls, as well ensuring hygiene measures are in place to protect people who come to buy the produce. Stalls are now 2.5 metres apart and a six metre separation corridor has been allocated, which follows the precise instructions od the Ministry of Health and the competent

authorities. “As we progress in this situation and according to the regulations set by the administrations we will expand the number of stalls and incorporate other types of

and the distance between people. Chemical toilets will also be installed, both for women and men, in order to guarantee this service to users and that they can use them when necessary. In addition, more than 700 cans of hydro-alcoholic handsanitiser have been purchased, which will be placed at the access points and at each stall and which must be used by customers before entering the sales areas.

products, until we can reach the point of having all the markets of Orihuela offering their usual array of goods.” The measures taken by the Department of Markets include the placement of fencing and the installation of a secure circuitous route to be able to visit the market, the hiring of private security personnel and the presence of a Local Police agent, who will coordinate the area and will forward the important information to those responsible at all times, controlling in turn the capacity

Before and after each market the physical area will be cleaned and disinfected - before the stalls are installed, and after their removal. The stalls will start setting up at 7:30am and the markets will be open to the public from 9am to 2pm. "Everything is ready to start this traditional economic activity and I want to emphasise that it has been very complicated to restart the markets because each needed an individual approach and we wanted to guarantee the health and safety of everyone, "said the Councillor.

Phase 1 for all of Valencia but anger in Madrid From yesterday (Monday, 18th May) all remaining health departments in the three provinces of the Comunidad Valenciana – those in and around Valencia city, plus La Ribera and Sagunto (Valencia province), Alicante city, San Juan, and Elche and the two departments operating from Castellón city – are on 'Phase 1', meaning the whole of the region is now at this level. However, the Spanish health ministry denied the Madrid regional government’s second request to join Phase 1 of relaxation of some of the strictest lockdown measures in Europe. Since it denied permission for such easing last week, people in and around the capital have been unable to meet up or enjoy a physically distanced alfresco drink or meal. The president of the Madrid region Isabel Díaz Ayuso accused the Socialist-

led coalition government of “taking advantage of the biggest crisis in Spain’s recent history to impose a single, dictatorial authority”. The sentiment was been echoed on the streets of one of Madrid’s wealthiest and most exclusive barrio where people in the city’s Salamanca neighbourhood took to the streets to demand the government’s resignation and shout, “¡Libertad!”, or “Freedom!” The protests have raised concerns about the spread of coronavirus in the area of Spain hit hardest by the pandemic.

The Madrid region has accounted for 66,005 of Spain’s 230,183 Covid-19 cases to date and 8,809 of its 27,459 deaths. The government has defended people’s right to protest, but called on them to behave responsibly. “Everyone’s always got the right to protest and even, if only for a short time, to make a lot of loud noise,” the science minister, Pedro Duque, said. “But the only thing we need to be careful about is that we’re in an epidemic situation, and so if you’re protesting, you need to maintain distances to avoid infection.”

Coronavirus may never go away, World Health Organization warns The disease that has infected more than 4.2 million people worldwide, killing nearly 300,000, may, like HIV, become endemic and a part of the fabric of daily life. The new coronavirus may never go away and populations around the world will have to learn to live with it, the World Health Organisation has warned.

the coronavirus crisis began. But the WHO warned there was no way to guarantee that easing the restrictions would not trigger a second wave of infections.

He said the attacks were often over-reactions from illinformed communities - while others were more sinister.

The virus first emerged in Wuhan in China late last year and has since infected more than 4.2 million people and killed nearly 300,000 worldwide.

“This virus may become just another endemic virus in our communities and this virus may never go away,” he told a virtual press conference in Geneva. “HIV has not gone away, but we have come to terms with the virus.” More than half of humanity has been put under some form of lockdown since

“There is some magical thinking going on that lockdowns work perfectly and that unlocking lockdowns will go great. Both are fraught with dangers,” the Irish epidemiologist said. Ryan also condemned attacks on healthcare workers that were linked to the pandemic, saying more than 35 “quite serious” such incidents were recorded in April alone in 11 countries.

As some countries around the world begin gradually easing lockdown restrictions imposed in a bid to stop the novel coronavirus from spreading, the WHO said it may never be wiped out entirely.

“We have a new virus entering the human population for the first time and therefore it is very hard to predict when we will prevail over it,” said Michael Ryan, the WHO’s emergencies director.

countries would have to stay the course.

“COVID-19 is bringing out the best in us, but it’s also bringing out some of the worst,” he said.

“Many countries would like to get out of the different measures,” said WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. “But our recommendation is still the alert at any country should be at the highest level possible.” ‘Long way to go’ Ryan added that there was a “long, long way to go” on the path to returning to normal, insisting that

“People feel empowered to take out their frustrations on individuals who are purely trying to help. “These are senseless acts of violence and discrimination that must be resisted.” But he insisted that in finding a way to conquer the virus was a chance for humanity to take major step forward by finding a vaccine and making it widely accessible. “It’s a massive opportunity for the world,” Ryan said.

Further extension Summer sales cancelled on border controls Spain’s Official State Gazette (BOE) published an order extending restrictions on non-essential travel for people coming into Spanish territory until June 15th. This order came into effect from May 16th at 00:00. Besides the quarantine, non-essential travel to Spain will be heavily restricted. As a rule, Spanish authorities will only let in Spanish citizens, permanent residents of Spain, and regular residents of the Schengen area (30 countries that include the EU members, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Switzerland and Andorra) who are in transit to their place of residence. Exceptions are also made for crossborder workers, healthcare professionals and caregivers on their way to work, diplomats and individuals who can prove an essential reason to travel, including for humanitarian reasons.

Today the Government has announced that the SUMMER SALES in stores are forbidden, in order to avoid crowds. The order stipulates that authorities may also turn away EU citizens and their relatives for public health reasons if they are not “registered as residents of Spain, or headed directly to their place of residence in another member state, Schengen-associated state or Andorra.”

Information for using motorbikes

An exception is also made for “the spouse of a Spanish citizen, or partner in a similar relationship that is registered in a public registry, and for descendants and parents living with the citizen, as long as they are traveling with this citizen or on their way to reunite with him or her.”

GBP / EUR UPDATE

GBP Last week the pound hung on for news from the Bank of England, and this week it’s been eying the government for its next move. The new mantra from PM Boris Johnson is no longer staying at home, but being alert. There are five levels of alert for people to stay, ranging from one to five. Midweek level four changed to level three, and although the new system has not received universal approval across the UK, it seems to have gone down well enough so far with investors - the pound looked reasonably comfortable. The government road map document guides businesses onhow the winding back of lockdown rules will affect the various UK economic sectors, including reopenings, either from early June or July. Although the media were not unanimous in their praise for the plan, investors took it in good part. Sterling was on average unchanged on the day, lower against the big four and firmer elsewhere. The lockdown changes however came nowhere near soon enough to get people in shops in April, with the British Retail Consortium reporting sales were down by a staggering 19.1% compared with the same month last year. Sterling was an average 0.8% lower on the news, with the Kiwi only having a worse day. It wasn’t the retail numbers that hurt the pound though, it was the perception of some that the government is badly managing the pandemic. Making headlines was the news that UK borrowing had soared to £123.2bn according to latest estimates, its highest level since World War Two. A test to find out whether people have been infected with coronavirus in the past has also been approved by health officials in England. Developments that would have been positive for the pound a month ago are now seen as signs of weakness. Chancellor Rishi Sunak’s original decision to pick up the tab for 80% of furloughed workers’ salaries received an enthusiastic reception. His announcement this week that he would extend the

scheme until the end of October went down less well. At the end of July employers will have to decide whether to share the burden, chipping in perhaps a quarter of the cost themselves, or to make jobs redundant. EUR As the UK begins its tentative steps out of lockdown, Europe is already a few strides ahead. Germany has allowed shops of all sizes to reopen, with extra hygiene and social distancing measures. Bundesliga football matches resume behind closed doors this weekend, the first big European league to do so. In France the extreme lockdown meant needing permits to justify any trips outside. Residents will no longer have to provide travel certificates, and Belgium has a four-person social bubble restriction. Cinemas, theatres and exhibitions are planned to open in Spain towards the end of May. It’s been a shy week in terms of stats and data out of Euroland, but plenty of drama in the courts. Last week saw downward pressure on the euro after the German Constitutional Court ruled that the European Central Bank must justify the “proportionality” of its asset purchase programme to Germany’ courts and government. This week European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen threatened a lawsuit, saying it is the German court, not the European Court of Justice that is overstepping its powers. The power struggle between Berlin and Brussels does not bode well for European cohesion or the euro, and the need for a court ruling has underlined the ideological distancing between northern and southern Europe. The European Central Bank’s economic bulletin was gloomy. Released after the April policy meeting, the ECB sees Euroland GDP falling between 5-12% this year. Euroland industrial production was of note, so too was Italy’s industrial output. It was rather disappointing, with monthly and annual falls of 28.4% and 29.3%.

Horse Rescue Centre only just surviving Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre (EHRC) like so many other charities is continuing to battle through the impact of the restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic. All of the centres usual sources of raising much needed funds have been detrimentally affected by the current situation. Its charity shops are closed, open days are suspended and all charity fundraising events are cancelled and permanent workers are gone. The effects are financially devastating, particularly on top of the horrendous storms and the subsequent economic problems which the Centre endured last year, from which it was just starting to recover when the pandemic hit. During lock down Sue and Rod Weeding, EHCRC Co-founders, have almost singlehandedly continued to feed and take care of the 120 equines with a handful of dedicated, diehard volunteers who have so generously given their time to help in whatever way they can (with social distancing and the correct permission to travel of course). Rod, 70, and Sue, 64, although feeling optimistic about the future are concerned about how the EHCRC Foundation will progress as the world starts to return to normality. One of the many issues to consider is, for example, the Charity Shops. Sue explained: “These are manned by a fantastic team of volunteers but the

majority of them are in their 70s and 80s. There is no way we would ask nor expect any of them to put themselves at risk.” The Charity Shops will have to follow the same rules and regulations on safety, hygiene etc as any other business. It’s already evident that so many businesses cannot afford to start up again because of the closures and new regulations to re-open. EHCRC has already been advised as to the expected costs of reopening and ensuring the new regulations are adhered to. Sue said: “It’s logistically and financially impossible at the moment for us to open under these circumstances and it is not looking good for the foreseeable future. There are so many other invisible expenses too which occur in order to facilitate the functioning of the Charity Shops just to give an example, the phone bill alone for last year just to deal with the collection and delivery of donated furniture was a staggering €3,557.” These worries aside, it is business as usual and on Friday night Rod and Sue having worked through another exhausting day, thought they’d finished for the evening when the Rojales Policia Local knocked on the door. An

abandoned pony was in need of refuge and so Rod left his meal and headed off to the rescue. The Rojales Authorities are incredibly supportive of the Centre and Rod and Sue were happy to help in an emergency. But the good news is the next day the owner was found, the pony had escaped but is now back with its very grateful owner. Sue said: “in the midst of this historical time for mankind we are so very grateful for our wonderful followers who have so kindly donated and this has allowed us to keep our heads above water or should we say the horses’ heads in their feed troughs! Literally that is where every single cent is going, on food and health care for the animals. The Centre just cannot afford at the moment to foot the bill for any other expenses. Any help anyone can give would be very much appreciated.”

Are You An Orphan? If you are currently paying a financial adviser to manage your investments, but never sit down in front of your adviser to review your portfolio, then you are what we would call an orphan client. However good the funds looked when your money was invested, if the markets are not monitored and your funds assessed, then there is a danger that your money is not being managed to ensure the best possible returns. If your current adviser does not offer this service, then you might wonder why you are paying an annual management fee. Many people had endowment mortgages in the eighties and nineties and were told that at the

end of their mortgage, there would be enough money left over for that dream car or holiday. Unfortunately, as the funds were not monitored, most people found they had a shortfall and needed to switch to a repayment mortgage. The above is simply an example of how important reviews of your investments are to ensure your goals can be realised. Seagate Wealth advisers all previously worked for Lloyds Bank and are used to providing their clients with the highest level of service. There are a number of financial advisers on the Costa Blanca so the question is “why choose Seagate? I believe that we offer a unique service to our clients. We have a fully staffed local office

in Benijofar with a back-up admin team, a Client Account Manager and a Relationship Manager. This means that we have a team that will support you with six monthly reviews of your investment or pension and we provide full administration for withdrawals, encashments and tax guidance. By getting to know each client individually, your Seagate adviser can fully understand your situation and this allows us to provide the best financial advice, not just for today, but forever. Five percent of Spaniards have had coronavirus Just 5 percent of Spain’s population has developed coronavirus antibodies, according to the first results of a serological study conducted by the Spanish government that was announced Wednesday. The study, which tested the blood of around 60,000 randomly selected participants, suggests that 2.3 million people in Spain have been infected by the virus. That is around ten times higher than the 228,691 cases that the country has so far confirmed. If the study is correct, it would bring the fatality rate of the virus to around 1.1 percent in Spain. So far, the country had confirmed more than 27,000 deaths by the end of last week. According to Marina Pollan, the head of the National Centre of Epidemiology, around 26 percent of infections were found to be asymptomatic. She also said the study found that antibodies were less frequent in children than in the general population.

The rate of antibodies also varied considerably by region. In Madrid, one of Spain’s hardest-hit areas, 11.3 percent of the tested population had antibodies. In regions including Asturias, the Canary Islands and Murcia, immunity was found in less than 2 percent of the sample. The results of this study suggest the disease is less widespread than other researchers have thought. In late March, a study by Imperial College London estimated that there had been 7 million cases of coronavirus in Spain. The study’s findings also mean that 95percent of Spain’s population is still vulnerable to the virus. According to Johns Hopkins University, for a population to develop herd immunity, usually between 70-90 percent of the group must have immunity. The antibody studies were led by the Spanish Health Ministry and the Carlos III Health Institute. Researchers claimed the blood tests were "accurate enough" to use for the study.

Orihuela Rambla de Cabo Roig to get summer spruce up opens golf courses The Orihuela City Council has reported that four of the five golf courses in Orihuela have opened their facilities within the "Phase 1" framework. The agreement reached between the Secretary of State for Tourism and the different Autonomous Communities has resulted in a coordinated single health protocol in response Covid-19. Part of the agreement calls for golf courses to have the required protection measures in place as recommended by the health authorities in order to prevent the spread of the virus (masks, gloves, protective glasses or face masks) and to limit the capacity on the course through spaced toff times. Measures have also been taken to minimise the contact golfers have with the flags, holes and bunker rakes. The golf courses that have been open since last Monday are: Real Club de Golf Campoamor, Villamartín, Las Colinas, Vistabella.

Improvements underway

The Councillor for the Environment, Dámaso Aparicio, has reported on the start of the cleaning and adaptation works that will be carried out in June on the Rambla de Cabo Roig in Orihuela Costa. "These are actions demanded by local residents for years and are finally being carried out thanks to the agreement reached with the Segura Hydrographic Confederation (CHS) and will begin the first week of June," the Councillor explained. The works, which will last one month, have been awarded for a total amount of 44,566.88 euros. In a joint initiative the Department of Environment is to carry out these works while the CHS also clean and adapt the Rambla Río Nacimiento (La Glea) and Barranco Rubio. Some actions were carried out before the DANA last September but any progress was lost in

the floods. Therefore, the Councillor has once again asked the CHS to "strengthen the maintenance of the channels and to effectively monitor their condition." The councillor explained that "all the trees, stumps, plants, weeds, brush, fallen wood, debris, garbage or any other material that is considered undesirable will be removed from the designated areas." Currently, the Rambla de Cabo Roig is over run by vegetation, undergrowth, stubble, reed beds, cut trees and other debris that could impede the correct flow of the waters towards the sea in the event of heavy rains, creating a plug effect and could also be a high fire risk in summer. "Now Orihuela is fulfilling its commitment to the Segura Hydrographic Confederation, as well as to the residents of Cabo Roig, who after many years, will return to having this natural space in perfect condition," said Dámaso Aparicio.

Could Spain save Europe's summer holidays? With many countries now easing their COVID-19 lockdowns, Europeans are reemerging with the same two questions: Can we go on holiday this summer? And, if so, where? The fear among governments, though, will be that the increased movement of people will spark a fresh wave of infections. But one study from Spain thinks it's found a solution. It wants the whole of Europe to plot its worst (red zones) and least (green zones) COVID-19-affected regions and for people to travel accordingly. 'Green zones' of different European countries A policy proposal by Madrid's Esade Business School wants to "elevate the green zoning approach to the level of the European Union". "The idea is simple: allowing the mobility of people between "green zones" of different European countries through a network of regions certified by European institutions," the study reads. The system would allow, for instance, travel between southern Italy and southern France, or between Greece and Switzerland: as long as you come from a European green-zone, you would be allowed to travel to another. National green-zones "are very good candidates for obtaining the green label from the EU," researcher Miquel Oliu Barton, who co-authored of the study, explained.

To obtain the green label, Oliu Barton said, a region should prove that the virus is under control: that the region's hospitals are not saturated, that the growth rate of new infections is low and that tests are generalised. The researcher suggested that highway exits could remain closed in red areas. "The same should apply to the train: coming from green areas, it should not stop at 'red' stations," he added. "And at airports, it's relatively easy to control where someone is coming from and where they want to go." Another measure the study proposes is for travellers to present a residence permit as proof that they come from a green-zone. 'Save the summer tourist season' Even though the COVID-19 outbreak is easing in some countries, the prospect of a normal summer holiday this year is looking uncertain for many. In several EU countries, borders are shut - allowing people to cross only if they have an important reason - travel restrictions have been introduced and international travel is discouraged. This year will not be good for the global travel industry, which is expecting losses of between 20 and 30 percent, according to estimates by the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO). "Such

travel

restrictions

will

additionally damage the already weakened economies of Europe’s southern countries, such as Spain or Italy, because they rely on tourism more heavily than the northern countries," the study notes. But as countries start to reopen their borders, this policy might be the way forward to "save the summer tourism season in southern Europe", the authors of the study said: "If well communicated and with sufficient guarantees, this proposal could save the summer tourist season in southern Europe, thus mitigating the enormous economic costs that the closure to international tourism could cause for these countries." Oliu Barton said that the proposal was sent to the bloc on 5th May and "has

been highly appreciated so far". "If adopted, the first European green areas could arrive very soon, as early as June," he added. The European Commission recently outlined its plan for a gradual and coordinated lifting of travel restrictions and border controls across the EU. It proposes an approach that "starts by lifting restrictions between areas or Member States with sufficiently similar epidemiological situations". That would imply that residents of countries with similar levels of infections should be able to travel more freely to and from those countries. But European Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson insisted that member states cannot discriminate

between EU passports. "If a border is opened, then all EU nationals can pass through that border," she said. Baltic countries Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia already reopened their borders to each other from Friday (15th May) after having so far avoided the worst of the coronavirus pandemic. France has said it will keep borders shut until "at least 15th June" and will reassess closer to the date. Austria said its border with Germany would reopen fully on 15th June. Chancellor Sebastian Kurz said Austria was aiming for similar agreements with Switzerland, Liechtenstein and its eastern neighbours` "as long as the infection figures allow."

Peter Kay in talks to make his TV comeback Fans figure Homer’s real age Peter Kay is in talks to make his big TV comeback alongside Michelle Keegan, she has claimed. The 32 year old has starred in Sky One's comedy series Brassic since last year, and has now let slip that Peter could be joining the cast for the third season. Comedian Peter, 46, is said to be a big fan of the series, with Michelle admitting she is keeping her "fingers crossed" he will make an appearance. During an interview with Heart Radio, the stunning brunette said the show's creator Joseph Gilgun was in speaking to Peter about joining the show. She said: "The last season I remember Joe speaking to Peter because Peter is a fan of the show. "I don't know if it's true that he's joining, I just know that he's a fan of the show and that he was in talks with Joe last season. "He would be a great addition to the show. I'm a massive fan of Peter Kay as well. Fingers crossed, it'd be hilarious." Michelle plays Erin Croft in the hit

series which follows a group of friends committing petty crimes to help make ends meet. The second series is currently on air, with a third season already being confirmed by Sky for next year. Peter recently made his return to showbiz after stepping out the limelight for personal reasons in 2017. He starred in an audio version of his hit show Car Share to "cheer people up" amid the coronavirus pandemic. In a statement, he said: "It's a horrific situation right now we're all going through and like so many people I feel compelled to try to do something positive in an attempt to cheer people up in some way. "Sian Gibson, Paul Coleman and myself got together via t'internet and wrote a

new short episode of Car Share. It all happened very quickly – in fact, it didn't exist a week ago." Before signing off, Peter added: "Obviously we weren't able to film anything because of the lockdown but I hope people will use their imagination and enjoy listening." The news of Peter's conversations with Brassic's boss come after he was forced to cancel his first live tour in 11 years. He announced in a statement back in March "Obviously this is disappointing news but well and truly justified given the circumstances. "We'll get through this, together and then we'll all have a great big dance for life. Stay safe and look after yourselves and the people around you."

Some eagle-eyed fans of The Simpsons celebrated a notable in-universe milestone on 12th May: Homer Simpson’s birthday. The date is commemorated thanks to a classic Simpsons episode which gave viewers a fleeting look at Homer’s driving licence, where the date of birth was written in tiny print. Even though Homer’s age has long been said to be 37, his birth date, which reads “05-12-56”, means that in the year 2020, he would be turning 64. People posted about the occasion on Twitter, noting their surprise at the character’s advanced age. “How can Homer be 64?” asked one commenter.

“Seems too young, but grandpa Simpson is still around, so I guess they just started young,” joked another. ”Of course, Bart is in his 40’s so all things are relative.” Of course, The Simpsons has always had a fairly lax attitude to continuity. With a few exceptions, the series has always reverted to the “status quo” at the end of each episode, with events seldom carrying over from one episode to the next. The series has also presented multiple conflicting versions of some key events, such as Marge and Homer’s courtship – which was initially shown to occur in the 1970s and early 1980s, but was later moved to the 1990s in the 2008 episode “That 90s Show”.

Favourite foods on lockdown As humans, we’re creatures of comfort. Never has this been so evident than during lockdown. As we push through two months of Spain’s coronavirusenforced lockdown, our early, optimistic days of making everything - notably sourdough and banana bread - from scratch has given way to convenience (mainly as finding flour currently is like finding a block of gold, severely hindering any baking efforts).

period in 2019, while the sale of beans is up by 44 percent. The 10 most-wanted items by Brits from the British Corner Shop: 1. Heinz Baked Beans in Tomato Sauce (up by 44 per cent) 2. Warburtons Crumpets Pack (up by 55 per cent)

3. Cadbury Creme Egg (up by 127 per cent) 4. Pause & Refresh Antibacterial Lemon Hand Gel (Didn’t sell it in 2019)

According to new data from British Corner Shop - which sells British food to expats around the globe - it seems we’ve turned to comfort food in a time of crisis, with Heinz Baked Beans and Warburtons crumpets listed as the most popular foods sold between 1st February and 20th April, 2020.

5. McDougalls Plain Flour (up by 14,201 per cent)

Crumpets have seen a 55 percent increase in sales on the site compared to the same time

9. McDougalls Self Raising Flour (up by 2,615 per cent)

6. Bisto Gravy Granules (up by 122 per cent) 7. Dettol Antiseptic (up by 2,569 per cent) 8. Hipp Organic First Infant Milk Ready to Use (up by 5,396 per cent)

10. Cadburys Flake 4 Pack (up by 217 per cent)

Unsurprisingly, antibacterial hand gel has also been a popular item, with sales of Dettol antiseptic spray up by 2,569 per cent compared to the same time last year. The demand for flour has also risen, as the online store notes it's seen a 14,201 per cent increase in demand during the last two months. Mark Callaghan, managing director at British Corner Shop, said: “We have seen a real increase in the comfort foods which remind people of home – even from those who are living within the UK rather than abroad. “We’ve also seen an increase in the number of customers in the UK and abroad who are sending care packages containing products like chocolate, soup and crumpets to loved ones in isolation. Proving that food is not only a huge comfort during a crisis, but people believe sending it is a great way to show you care and stay connected.”

Is hummus healthy? There's no question hummus is hot: You can now find all kinds of flavours at the grocery store, from black garlic and coconut curry to red pepper. But is hummus actually healthy? Though there’s no universal recipe, hummus typically stars chickpeas as its main ingredient. Chickpeas - and foods made with them - have exploded in popularity in recent years due to the rise of plant-based eating and gluten-free diets. Chickpeas, which are a member of the pulse family (along with lentils, beans. and peas, like black-eyed peas and split peas), check both boxes. They also happen to be incredibly ecofriendly, affordable, readily available, and versatile. Benefits of chickpeas One cup of ready-to-eat chickpeas contains 10 grams of protein and about 10 grams of dietary fibre which is 40 percent of the daily minimum target. They are also packed with antioxidants and several other key nutrients. A 2016 study found that people who regularly consume chickpeas and/or hummus have higher intakes of fibre, folate, magnesium, potassium, iron, and vitamins A, E, and C. The unique nutrient makeup of chickpeas may be why regular eaters of chickpeas and hummus have lower BMIs and waist

measurements than people who don't eat those foods, according to government data. They're also 53 percent less likely to be obese. Other research suggests that hummus may help offset blood sugar spikes from foods that are high on the glycemic index. Chickpea consumption is also tied to improved gut health, and protection against heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers. How healthy is hummus? As for the healthfulness of chickpeas in the form of hummus, it really comes down to how the spread made. In traditional recipes, pureed chickpeas are combined with other antiinflammatory super-foods, including extra virgin olive oil, tahini, garlic, and lemon. In just a few minutes you can whip up a batch of good-for-you homemade hummus in a blender or mini-food

processor using the ingredients mentioned above. But if you buy pre-made versions, be sure to check the label. Choose brands made with extra virgin olive oil - as opposed to more inflammatory oils, like soybean oil. And skip hummus that contains preservatives: Scan the ingredient list for things like potassium sorbate, sodium benzoate, and other words you don't recognise. If you're eating hummus as a snack, max out on the health perks by scooping it up with fresh, raw veggies, rather than processed chips or crackers. You can also enjoy hummus in other ways, too. Use it as a creamy salad dressing or a mayo alternative (for bean, chicken, egg, and tuna salads); to thicken sauces, soups, mashed potatoes, or cauliflower mash; or as a topping for oven roasted veggies or potatoes.

She ignores me My boyfriend is an only child and went to a top public school. I met his mother for the first time before we went into isolation - it didn't go well - she completely ignored me and just talked to her son about his ex fiancee. My boyfriend eventually admitted that it is a class thing. I am horrified. He said his mother will accept me in time. I don't relish the thought of my having to wait around to see if I can win my future mother-in-law's approval. My boyfriend and I had to isolate separately but are back together since restrictions have been lifted, and I´m glad to say we are closer than ever. During lockdown we Facetimed and talked about marriage. I mentioned again the problem with his mother and I have admitted that his mother had refused to see me! I am astounded that nothing had changed or was going to change, and then he said 'anyway who cares what she thinks'. But I don't want to have a relationship when there is discord between us. He seems to think it's ok that she behaves like this, but I am worried about the future; the wedding, children? Firstly, it was extremely rude that your partner's mother ignored you when you first met. Your partner ought to have been horrified too and, breeding or not, he should have taken his mother to task over it. His mother is displaying classic passive aggressive behavior; putting the boot in without actually having to put the boot in. The mother's treatment of you is not only directed towards you, but towards her son. Your partner's mother was hoping that if she ignores you for long enough, her son will get the message that she doesn't approve and will eventually choose which relationship is more important to him. It's interesting that you have not been introduced to her before now? Perhaps your boyfriend anticipated his mother's reaction. Have a frank conversation with your partner. Specsavers Ópticas reopens with safety front of mind Specsavers Ópticas has reopened on the Costa Blanca this week to provide eye care to the community from Javea in the north to Torrevieja in the south. However, customers are being asked to request an appointment in advance by phone or web link to help with social distancing and hygiene measures. After eight weeks of operating an emergency-only service, the stores are now able to provide the full breadth of optical services to its customers, including eye tests and frame repairs. Customers will also be able to buy new glasses, contact lenses and other accessories. Ahead of the reopening, Specsavers Ópticas has introduced a series of hygiene and personal protection measures to ensure a safe and reassuring experience. This includes restrictions on the number of customers allowed in the store at any one time, and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) in line with government and industry guidelines. In addition, all testing equipment and frames will be thoroughly sanitized before and after handling, there are hand sanitizer stations in store, and strict social distancing rules will be followed.

Francisco Jurado, store director of the Torrevieja, Guardamar and La Zenia stores says: ‘We are absolutely committed to making sure that everyone is taken care of in the best possible way, both in the test rooms and in the rest of the store. That’s why there will be restrictions on the number of customers in the store at any one time and we’ve introduced the highest hygiene and personal

measure that we have taken is designed to put safety first.’ In addition to these measures, the store will prioritise appointments where possible for customers aged 65 and over. Francisco thanked customers for their patience and understanding during this difficult time. ‘We’re passionate about providing professional eye health services and offering great customer experiences, so it’s been tough to have to close our store. At the same time and in line with guidance, it was clearly the right decision for us to take in order to protect our communities during the pandemic.

This is just to safeguard people at all times during their visit.’ ‘Our number one priority is the safety and wellbeing of all our customers and colleagues, so every

‘We have missed our loyal customers and the opportunity to welcome new customers so it is fantastic to be able to open again, with new measures in place, to make sure customers can visit us safely and with confidence.’ To request an appointment and find your nearest store log on to specsavers.es/stores. Blow off steam while stuck in quarantine Boxing is the perfect exercise for building strength and getting rid of stress. But while it may look intuitive, proper technique is important for getting the most out of your workout while protecting your joints. Here’s a virtual boxing lesson you can do from your living room. This workout consists of four rounds, including the warm-up round. Each round includes three minutes of work, and then a one minute of active recovery, which means you continue moving your body to keep your heart rate elevated and prepare for the next round of work. Get started with your feet hip-width apart. From there, square up into a boxer's stance. Step your dominant foot back a step; right-handed people will step their right foot back, and lefthanded people will step their left foot back. Then, shift your weight back and forth between your legs, staying on the balls of your feet. This will help you move throughout the workout quickly and easily. For your upper body, bring your arms up so your elbows are tucked in near your rib cage while your hands are balled into fists at either side of your face. Your dominant hand will be your "back hand" while your non-dominant hand will be your "front hand." The routine involves both front hand and back hand punches, so it's important to remember your front and back hand as you move through the workout. Six Basic Punches Before you get started there are six basic punch techniques to master. Keep your

knees bent and stay on the balls of your feet as you move throughout these punches: 1. Jab: Your front hand will come forward into a straight punch, with your thumb facing the floor. Your back hand will remain up in starting position, with your elbow tucked to your ribcage and your fist near your chin. Reset by returning your front hand to starting position. 2. Cross jab: Like the jab, the cross involves extending your back hand forward in front of your face. This time, twist your body to bring your back hand forward, pivoting your body. Reset by returning your back hand to starting position. 3. Front hook: Bring your front arm around in a hook-like shape. Pivot your front foot as you turn your hips inward and cross your arm over. When your elbow aligns with your shoulder, bring your front arm back to reset. 4. Back hook: Pivot your back foot as you make the same hook-like shape with your back arm. Turn your back hip inward as you flow through the motion; once your elbow aligns with your shoulder, bring your arm back in to reset. 5. Front upper cut: Bring your arm in a similar, hook-like position, but dropping your front arm and bringing it back up towards you, rather than around in front of you. Keep your palm facing your torso.

6. Back upper cut: With the same stance as the front upper cut, bring your back arm down and around. This time, pivot your back foot and twist your hips forward as you send your back arm to the front of the room. Round 1 Start with a warm-up, beginning with basic jumping jacks, then switch into cross-jacks, crossing your arms on top of each other in front of your body as your

legs cross beneath you. Next, fast highknees before switching into butt-kickers, alternating each foot as you kick your heel to your bum. After the short cardio burst, move into a squat-jump burst for 15 seconds. Cool down with a boxer bounce from side to side. Round 2 Runs through each of the six punches, starting with the front and cross jab. Keep your elbows close to your body through each move and speed up after each reset. After running through a couple of front and cross jabs, add a front hook and reset after each set of punches. Add on a back hook, and repeat the four movements a couple of times for practice. Once you've mastered that combination, switch your hooks for upper cuts. Continue with a front and cross jab, then move into a front upper cut and back upper cut. Give this combination a few practice runs before moving forward. Put all six movements together and run through the series a few times. The final result should be in this order: front jab, cross jab, front hook, back hook, front upper cut, and back upper cut. Your active recovery for this round is one minute long, alternating between four standard squats and four popsquats. For the pop squat, alternate touching the floor with each hand while in a squat, and jump to a stand between each movement. Round 3 The third round focuses on duck

combinations and start’s in your boxer's stance. From there, punch out a front and cross jab, then bend your knees and lower your torso slightly forward into a duck. Repeat this series a few times before moving on. For your next duck combo, you'll use a cross jab-front hook-cross jab pattern before returning to your starting position. Once you've nailed this move, put the two back to back, so you have the following pattern: front jab-cross jabduck, cross jab-front hook-cross jab, reset. Practice the combination: front upper cut-back upper cut-front hook. Once you have this series down, add onto your initial series, so that you have the following pattern: front jab-cross jabduck, front upper cut-back upper cutfront hook. For your active recovery, do two pushups, followed by six mountain-climbers. Do as many as you can for one minute. Round 4 For the first 30 seconds of the final round, alternate between front and cross jabs, followed by front and back upper cuts. For the next 30 seconds, add in high knees as you run through this movement, punching out your jabs and upper cuts as you alternate raising each knee as high as possible. For your final 30 seconds, rotate through two front and cross jabs before dropping down to a push-up position and pushing up twice. Rotate through that series twice...then congratulate yourself for completing the workout!

What Coloured Number Plates Mean?

We recently looked at the standard number plate system in Spain. This week we are delving into the world of coloured number plates. You may have noticed that taxis display blue number plates on the back of their vehicles. It is not only marked and branded taxis that display them, but also VTC vehicles (Vehículos de Turismo con Conductor), which are effectively private hire or chauffer driven cars, a taxi by another name but more restrictive as to how it can operate. The objective of the blue number plate was to clearly identify legally licenced taxis and VTC vehicles, and, more importantly, highlight “pirate” taxis operating in certain areas. The clear definition of a taxi of VTC is to provide transport services in exchange for money, goods or services. Anyone doing this in a private vehicle is therefore, by definition, a taxi, and operating illegally, without insurance, in the event of carrying passengers without the correct registration.

accompanied by the acronym CD and CC in each case.

Companies such as Uber and Cabify are operating in certain areas of Spain, these vehicles will also adopt the blue number plate, as they are classed under the same rules as VTC vehicles.

The regulation obliges all vehicles with a taxi or VTC licence, with up to 9 seats, to display a blue number plate on the rear only. On the front, the ordinary, black letters on a white background is required. As with all number plates, no alterations or modifications are permitted.

Some other colours If you see a red or green number plate, this is a temporary registration whilst the permanent process is being carried out, such as would be the case if you were to transfer a British registered vehicle to Spain.

There are also acronyms used to identify many types of vehicles, especially those of the State Security Forces and Bodies: CNP for the National Police, PGC for the Civil Guard, CME for the Mossos d'Esquadra or ET for the Army, among others.

The move also brought Spain in line with other countries in Europe, some of which already have a similar distinction

To obtain one of these plates, the vehicle owner must provide proof of the legal status of the vehicle, so it also

articles 25 and 49 of the General Vehicle Regulations that specify the format and content that the number plate of any vehicle must have. It is not enough to be black letters on a white background, but it must be reflective. Only certain flexibility in the dimensions is allowed, considering three different sizes according to the characteristics of the vehicle. Since 2000 it is also mandatory to include the blue strip of the European Union with the initial of the country of registration, “E” in the case of Spain.
