19 infection figures before they will be allowed to visit. Spain is expecting to open its borders to welcome international tourists from July 1st without new arrivals being expected to quarantine when they get here. However, Spain wants Britain to improve its figures before allowing tourists to visit freely. The UK death toll rose by 215 on Saturday, compared to four deaths in Spain on the same day. “For us it is important to guarantee that people arrive healthy and leave healthy,” Minister for Tourism Maria Reyes Maroto told the media at the weekend. The Minister confirmed that Germany and northern European countries such as Norway and Denmark are likely to be the first to be welcomed back to Spain once the country opens its borders to holidaymakers. “At this moment, their epidemiological situations are very good,” she said.

with foreign tourists from June 16th. Officials there want central government to approve a project which would see the arrival of 3000 tourists from Germany – mainly staying on the island of Mallorca but some also allowed to travel to Ibiza and Menorca. The news comes after Greece took a u-turn on allowing access to Britons this summer. On Friday, the Greek Ministry of Tourism announced that from June 15th it will be allowing people to enter Greece on direct flights in to Athens and the northern city of Thessaloniki. It published a list of countries eligible for entry, based on Covid-19 infection figures, but it did not include the UK.

Maria Reyes Maroto told the media that regional government representatives had spoken with the likes of Jet2holidays and TUI with a view to the government approving some pilot schemes for tourists returning in July.

However, on Monday, Greece’s Minister for Tourism Harry Theoharis clarified the country's new entry laws, confirming that Britons will be permitted to arrive from June 15 but will be subject to stricter requirements than certain other nations.

Meanwhile, the Balearic Islands regional government has been lobbying central government for the right to organise a test run

Greek officials confirmed that the country will accept arrivals from airports deemed high-risk by

the European Union’s aviation safety agency (EASA), which includes British airports, but that these passengers will be subject to testing and possible quarantine. Theoharis told news agencies, “Tourists originating from airports listed on EASA are obliged to be tested once they land in Greece and remain at a designated hotel for one day. If the test turns out negative, these visitors will then be obliged to observe a 7-day quarantine. If their sample is positive, they will remain in a 14day quarantine and their health will be monitored.” The 29 countries currently deemed safe include: Albania, Australia, Austria, Bulgaria, China, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Japan, Latvia, Lebanon, Lithuania, Malta, Montenegro, New Zealand, North Macedonia, Norway, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Korea, and Switzerland. Greek authorities will conduct random sample testing on passengers arriving from these airports on the approved list.

Minutes silence starts mourning period

Work to start on the Emergency Services Centre

The Mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, led the official minutes silence held at Playa Flamenca Town Hall last Wednesday (27th May) to mark the start of the national governments ten-day mourning period. Nationally millions fell silent as King Felipe VI led the minutes’ silence with his family to pay respect to more than 27,000 people who have died from the Covid-19 coronavirus across Spain. All flags on public buildings have been lowered to half-mast to mark the mourning period, which is the longest declared since the restoration of democracy in the late 1970s. Government spokesperson Maria Jesus Montero said: “Eight out of 10 victims were older than 70, they were those who helped build the country that we know today.” Locally, many of the bars and restaurants - despite only recently being able to open to customers - have cancelled entertainment as a mark of respect for those who have lost their lives.

The Mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, and the Councillor for Emergencies, Víctor Valverde, have announced that the contract for the building of the Orihuela Costa Emergency Centre has been awarded and work on the long-awaited facility will start this week. The contract has been awarded to the Oriolan company Doalco for the amount of 2,064,000 euros (VAT included) and that the work will take around 6 months with the Emergency Services Centre, located in La Zenia, being completed by the end of the year. "This was one of the first actions that we faced and the construction would have been faster if the Valencian Government had assumed the execution of the work as originally planned and had not finally deferred it to the City Council," the Mayor said. Councillor Valverde added: “We had to start from scratch, because it was practically a forgotten project and we had to resume talks as there were two different administrations in power before

it got off the ground. However, despite all these hurdles, after a lot of work and a lot of effort, the project is a reality and we will start work in a few days .” The Centre will house the headquarters of the different emergency and security organisations for the Orihuela Costa. These include: National Police, Guardia Civil, Policia Local, SAMU ambulance (summer only), fire crews, Forrest Brigade and Proteccion Civil. Having a dedicated base for emergency service in Orihuela Costa has been a political hot-potato for many years. Residents, local political parties and organisations have lobbied for it to be built for many years. Currently, emergencies services have to travel to Orihuela Costa from various neighbouring boroughs. This causes delays in people receiving help or treatment and many believe that lives have been lost due to the time lost. This has been a particular issue with ambulance crews not being familiar with coastal areas and address.

Sánchez will ask for last State of Alarm extension The President Pedro Sánchez will request a sixth and final extension of the State of Alarm this week. Sánchez announced on Sunday that the Government is going to request a "final and definitive" extension of the two-week state of alarm this week. In the final stage, each autonomous community will have "maximum responsibility" in their management of Phase 3 of the de-escalation. As the situation is currently developing, the majority of Spain could be in Phase 3 on June 8th.

The extension - the sixth since the declaration of the state of alarm - would last from June 8th to 21st, the date on which the socalled 'new normality' would begin because, "given the evolution of the pandemic", at the end of this two-week period it would not be necessary to

He has also indicated that, if the epidemiological situation allows it, some communities could propose "the lifting of the state of alarm, even before June 21." Sánchez also referred to the country's economic recovery, in which he has said that he will prioritize the automotive and tourism sectors. The Government's intention is for the extension to be approved today (Tuesday) by the Council of Ministers for a vote in Congress on Wednesday. Sánchez has appealed to "the responsibility and generosity of all political groups" to support a state of alarm that, in his opinion, "has revealed itself to be absolutely essential for the containment of covid-19". However, he has announced that he will not negotiate with the Popular Party, which has refused to maintain the state of alarm. MORE: Regional decisions to follow last lockdown - See page 7

WAIT… MY HOME’S WORTH WHAT? Rebecca Serwotka Rebecca Serwotka - Your favourite local property expert, of Inmobiliaria Real Estate Agents in Ciudad Quesada & published author of “Moving Forward - 25 Essential Rules For Buying & Selling Real Estate Without Going Crazy.” Request your FREE copy today!Featured on Best Buy Spain - Property TV.

The problem everyone is facing right now is speculation. They’re all speculating if the property market will bounce back, or is it on hold for the immediate future. On a wider scale, until international buyers return to our part of the world, it’s still a little too soon to say. However, there are people continuing to buy that are local to the area, or have been reserving by phone and video chat. People still have dreams of relocating to sunnier shores, or to own a holiday home where their family can share quality time together. And thanks to the area we’re all in, that will never change. So where does that leave you as a vendor? Selling your home during a pandemic can seem like the unthinkable, but everyone has valid reasons why they need to move. Maybe they have a growing family and need more space, or the opposite, and wish to downsize as they’re now empty nesters. Whatever economy you’re in, no-one ever knows when the perfect time to buy or sell a home is, until it’s passed. So you need to take a deep breath and take that leap of faith, now.

Do you know what your home is worth in today’s market? Homeowners often think their property is worth more than what it is, due to their personal connection. Yes it’s hard to put a figure on memories, but overpricing could lead buyers to be suspicious as to why you’re on the market at a higher price than all the others in your area. You’d better be able to clearly explain the price increase to prospective buyers, otherwise you could risk being stigmatized as “the house noone wants.” Learn what your home is worth, and list it for sale close to that figure. Ready to start the process of selling your home? I will be holding an online webinar* presentation on Friday 5th June 2020 at 12 noon. A “Sellers Guide Checklist!” Everything you need to know about selling a property on the Costa Blanca. And here’s what I want you to do: Register at www.homes4u.es/webinar to save your seat! There is a limit of attendees, so early registration is recommended. *A webinar is a presentation held over the internet, that you can watch from your computer or mobile device in the comfort and safety of your own home. Help Vega Baja calls for support With the regional moving firmly into Phase 2 and the encouraging decrease in the daily figures for both new cases and the number of deaths, most of us are starting to see light at the end of the tunnel and are hopeful of an end to lockdown. However, as the lock down is eased, life is not going to be any easier for many people and in fact for many locals life is actually getting more and more difficult as time goes on. Families are turning to food banks and obviously to charities such as Help Vega Baja for support. Like the rest of the country, the majority of charities have lost all income for the past two and a half months whilst at the same time Help Vega Baja has no doubt that it is going to receive more and more requests for support . The charity has continued to help people throughout the lock down in as many ways as it can and this will continue as we move forward through deescalation. Therefore, in an attempt to raise some funds for the charity Help-VegaBaja has set up a GoFundMe page with an initial target of 1,500 euros. The intention is to purchase food vouchers

to provide for people who the charity comes across in real need to ensure they are able to put food on the table – other things it can help with - but the immediate concern is that families are not cutting back on the food they need. The charities GoFundMe page reads: “Do you want to join us in making a difference to people within the Vega Baja community? For 40 years HELP Vega Baja registered charity has been supporting people, often at exceedingly difficult times in their lives. Working closely with social service departments, the consulate office, other charities or

organisations and directly with those needing support, we have ensured that people have somewhere to turn to when days are dark, when they can’t find a solution to their problem and need help to get back on track. Our help is not limited to any nationality and all requests for support are considered by the elective committee.” If you can help then please visit: https://www.gofundme.com/f/he lp-vegabaja?utm_source=customer&utm _medium=copy_link&utm_camp aign=p_cf+share-flow-1 Help Vega Baja is a registered charity which supports of all ages with all sorts of problems within the Vega Baja area from La Marina to Pilar de la Horadada. The Spanish Health Ministry on Sunday (31st May) reported the lowest number of new coronavirus cases in a day since 6th March. On that date, there were 106 positive tests confirmed, while on Sunday, there were 96 diagnosed in the previous 24 hours. From 6th March, cases began to spike in Spain, until they reached more than 9,000 infections in a single day toward the end of March. Since then, once the government’s confinement measures began to take effect, contagions slowly started to fall. But until now they had never dropped below a hundred. That said, the figure should be viewed with some caution. Since the coronavirus crisis began in Spain, there has been underreporting of the figures on Sundays and Mondays, mostly due to lower staffing levels at weekends in hospitals.

Only Guardamar has reopened its beaches With entry into Phase 2 of the deescalation plan, only Guardamar del Segura - one of the four of the coastal municipalities of the Vega Baja area - will reopen its beaches to bathers within various measures and security controls. These included actions such as social distancing, the prohibition of smoking on all beaches, as well as no ball games, no mats and adherence to all recommendations sent by the Generalitat Valenciana to all the municipalities through its "Safe Beaches " guide. In municipalities such as Orihuela and Pilar de la Horadada, an opening date for beaches has not been given and they will remain closed for the near future. In the case of Orihuela, as explained by Emergency Councillor Víctor Valverde, despite the allowance set by the

authorities for beaches to open in Phase 2, the work falls on the municipalities and ‘it is not easy to prepare everything necessary to guarantee safety across 14 kilometres of coastline and 11 beaches, such has the municipality has. The mayor has also announced that he is already working on contracting a system that will allow, through a mobile application or telephone reservation, access control and occupation in real time of each of the beaches in Orihuela Costa, as well as being able to know and establish the types of users who access them at all times. The Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, has given dates, announcing that its beaches will open during the week of 8th to 14th June, once all the safety and hygiene measures for the use of bathers can be put in place.

Renewed calls for Coastal Cultural Centre

PIOC, the political party striving for independence for Orihuela Costa, is reigniting the fight for a Cultural Centre to be built on the coast. President Peter Houghton said: “While a child in Orihuela Centro can study in a library, learn languages in a public language centre, learn music at the conservatory, or dance, or attend a concert or exhibition, a child in the town of Orihuela Costa cannot do any of that. “...What we ask the city council is to provide what it has an obligation to provide and it is a Cultural Centre. We at PIOC are going to take our demand for a Cultural Centre to Europe and the Valencian Generalitat not only for the 4,000 children and young people who live in the town of Orihuela Costa, but

for all the residents who think they have the right to the same rights as the neighbours of Orihuela Centro.” The party believes that a good Cultural Centre would improve the housing market - which it believes will see house prices plummet by more than a third of their value - and would encourage people to register on the pardon and in therefore in turn increase services and money for the local government. Peter Houghton continued that whilst the party does not support claims that the city of Orihuela steals from the coast as some residents believe, PIOC “does believe it mistreats us because our residents pay the same as a neighbours living in the city centre”, but we do not

have the same access to services and facilities. He explained: “And this is why we demand to be a minor local entity. Because it is clear that the city council of Orihuela doesn’t know how to govern the coast. We will take this city council to court, to Europe and the Generalitat for failing to provide a Cultural Centre. “Unfortunately in their eagerness to give us nothing, the local government push the people of Orihuela Costa towards Independence. They have not learned the lessons of Guardamar del Segura, Pilar de la Horadada, San Miguel de Salinas ... .. and they will end up being a small city remembering what they have lost on the way as a result of their clumsiness and lack of vision.”

Responsible waste disposal during the pandemic The Councillor for Street Cleaning, Dámaso Aparicio, has re-launched the services that were put on hold during the first weeks of confinement, such as the collection service of furniture and household goods on public roads. This service has been resumed since Monday and to request it, prior notice will be mandatory so that the collection point is registered. The Councillor explained that "all the items deposited will be disinfected and collected after 72 hours following the safety recommendations for the workers who provide the service.” Requests for collection of large household items from Orihuela Costa need to be made by phone call to 96 607 61 00 - Extension. 4513. The deposit will be made according to the organisational chart established for each area and will be collected on the third day of your deposit. However, if people do not wish to 3 days for collection, the Department of Street Cleaning has provisionally opened the municipal drop-off point located in the Polígono Puente Alto on Wednesdays from 9am to 11:30am; Thursdays from 6pm to 8:30pm and Saturdays from 9am to 11:30am. In order to take unwanted furniture and large household items to this facility, it will be necessary to request an appointment on 96 530 61 78 and once there, you will need to present formal identification to prove you live in the

municipality of Orihuela deeds of the local property where you live. The service is provided for the deposit of household goods and household appliances for individuals, its use is not authorised for companies, for rubble deposits, sanitary ware or works remains. The Councillor assured people that "throughout the municipality, since the start of the state of alarm and until it ends, the external washing and disinfection of rubbish containers and their location is being carried out so that citizens can approach without fear to deposit their garbage, into the containers specified for each type of waste”. Used gloves and masks The Councillor for Emergencies Víctor Valverde discussed the problem of people throwing used gloves and masks on the ground becuase "they are not recyclable, whether they are made of paper, plastic or cloth." Once these items have been used (gloves and masks) “they should be deposited with the rest of the garbage in wastebaskets or rubbish

containers. Never thrown on the floor, to avoid possible Coronavirus contagions in the rest of the population since this material could be contaminated,” Councillor Valverde said and called for citizen responsibility and collaboration so that this material is removed correctly. Pet owners are also obliged to collect their pets droppings and to guide their pets to the edge of the pavement, the part closest to the curb to avoid hygiene problems. It is also advisable to dilute the area once the ‘poop has been scooped’ with a little soapy water to avoid leaving urine stains on the sidewalks.

Costa Blanca Beaches Association Vicente Frasquet was named the first president of the Business Association Costa Blanca Beaches, during its official launch recently. The Association brings together companies that provide tourist services, hospitality, leisure, equipment, security and sports activities across coastal areas of the province of Alicante. The main objective of this new business organisation is to defend and represent the interests of the group and contribute to enhancing the tourist image of the Costa Blanca, as well as advancing the quality of service provided each year to the millions of people who use the beaches of the province of Alicante. In addition, in these special circumstances that the covid-19 pandemic has generated, one of the association's priorities will be to ensure the safety and health of tourists who use beach services and also of the professionals who provide them. This is a sector that is highly dependent on international tourism, and which faces a very difficult and uncertain future, which began with the forced closure of business during Easter and subsequent festivities. These businesses are now facing a short summer season through

which they are going to have to adapt to a drastic reduction in the number of foreign visitors, to which are added the capacity restrictions and the incorporation of new sanitary measures and social distancing. The businessmen intend to collaborate actively with the administrations, institutions and business organisations across the sector to activate solutions that ensure the survival of the concessionary companies and provide a service with all the health guarantees required by the protocols in the tourism sector. It will particularly focus on the peculiarities of providing beach services from parasols to beach bars. The association considers that its companies play a relevant role in the image of the area since on many occasions they are the first reference for tourist information or information on the municipality in which they are located for visitors. The Association also believes its members provision of regulated beach services prevents the proliferation of unregulated street vending of beverages, food and other products on the coast, while improving safety rates and benefiting quality tourism.

Crevillente mountain rescue

Fire fighters had to make a daring night rescue when a young couple were stranded in the Sierra de Crevillente, near to Albatera. The young woman had fallen just before 11pm and suffered an injured ankle and so her partner needed to call for expert help. The pair were found by a Crevillente rescue crew and their rescue dog. However due to the dangerous terrain, location and the time it was decided that a member of the team would stay with the couple through the night until the rescue could take place the following morning. Titan the rescue dog also stayed to keep the group company. At 7.30 the next morning the area rescue returned and transferred the injured woman to San Vicente del Raspeig, north of Alicante where she was reunited with her family, who took her to the local hospital for treatment.

A roundup of the N332's most popular stories this week

Football Fans La Liga is back! The countdown begins... #LaLigaSantander returns on June 11th with a showpiece round of matches!

Here you have the timetables of the next two rounds.

Restaurants after lockdown During this week we have seen the first QR Menus at the terraces of bars and restaurants. Once you are at your table, with a QR reader installed on your mobile you can see the menu in a few seconds. This allows diners to look at a menu without having to handle a menu card.

Beaches will begin to open in areas in phase 2 Each Town Hall will decide when they will open again. For example; - Alicante and Elche (La Marina) will open their beaches this Monday 1st June.

- Torrevieja; Monday 8th June - Benidorm; Monday 15th June (We advise you to visit the web of your Town Hall to find out when the beaches of your area will open.)

FOR AREAS IN PHASE 2: Movements between municipalities for exercise The Government has modified the order SND/414/2020 that included the relaxation of restrictions in phase 2, and the limit that required walking less than a kilometre from home and doing sport within the same municipality, is no longer applied. Likewise, time slots are eliminated and the practice of sport and walks are allowed at any time except between 10:00 and 12:00 and between 19:00 and 20:00, which are reserved for people over 70 and the vulnerable. Also, there is no limitation on the number of times per day that you can go out to do these activities.

Therefore, in phase 2 it is possible to do sports and walk outside the municipality of primary residence, although always within the limits of the province, island or territorial unit of reference for the purposes of the de-escalation process. Regarding the possibility of using the car to move to another area in which to carry out these activities (for example, to go to the countryside for hiking), the order does not specify anything. However, it can be understood that the elimination of the territorial limits for sports in phase 2 opens the possibility of taking the car to move for this reason within the province or territorial unit.

Lockdown clear out for a good cause Have you been spring cleaning during lock down? Have you found stuff you didn’t know you had and now want to get rid of it? The charity Help at Home Costa Blanca is desperate for your unwanted items to sell in their two charity shops in Orihuela Costa. Right through the lock down the charity has remained busy looking after people in real need of help. Volunteers have been taking people for hospital and doctors’ appointments, even though the number of volunteers was seriously depleted because many are in most vulnerable groups. Things that the charity have done include working with the social workers, the town hall and hospital to help give family news and support when they come home and working to help clients access Social Service benefits and helping when loved ones have died. provided for a woman who had no income. Several hundred euros have had to be spent preparing the shops so they can open with the new state of alarm restrictions. Two major fundraising events, a masquerade ball at the San Miguel Castle and a murder mystery at Drivers Bar in Villa Martin had to be cancelled. A charity spokesperson said: “All this has seriously depleted our cash reserves. The volunteers receive no income, only their fuel expenses are reimbursed but they have not been paid for the past three months. We would have had income from the weekly market at the Emerald Isle but this obviously had to be suspended. “In these times of crisis, our charity has been a real lifeline for so many local people, and we are in desperate need of funds to continue this important work. If people would like to donate, then we would be very happy to receive any amount small or large. The information is on our Facebook account. Or please phone the office on 965 328 794. “We are also very interested in people who can help us in any

way either by volunteering to work in the shop, by becoming a driver or a befriender. Or very importantly, a fundraiser. “ The charity shop in the Playa Flamenca Commercial Centre is open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 2pm to receive and sell smaller items while the shop in Cabo Roig (off the N332) is open at the same hours Monday to Friday for furniture or to arrange collections. All possible precautions are being taken to ensure staff and customers are safe. Masks have to be worn, there is hand sanitiser in the entrances and available throughout the shops. Everything gets disinfected and the Playa Flamenca shop has been changed so make more space. The number of customers in the shop is limited and there are signs everywhere reminding people to keep to distancing rules. Charity assessors have been working tirelessly assessing new clients and offering help and support, including finding carers for them where needed. Several families in the UK have been asking for help with elderly parents as they have not been able to get over to Spain in the lockdown.

organisation is currently coordinating projects to support the vulnerable and those in need of a little help living in Orihuela Costa during and after the Covid-19 Coronavirus pandemic – and everyone can help by donating food and essential items. Urgent help needed The organisation is currently calling on all local shops and supermarkets throughout Orihuela Costa to help by providing collection points for donations of food and essential supplies from their customers and their own shop. Volunteers are needed to sort the donated food at the main food distribution point and drivers will be needed to collect food and essential supplies and bring them

to the main distribution point then to distribute to the eight Food Bank outlets. Supporting the project to date are Ray Kearney President of the Irish Community Orihuela Costa, David Young President of Reach Out and Maryanne Groningen President of the Ladies Inner Wheel Club Campoamor and the organisation hopes to work closely with all associations and charities helping those in need. Paul Moran, owner of The Emerald Isle, La Florida, has offered to support the project, but organisers know that they still need fund raiser volunteers to help promote and raise funds for the Food Bank Project, so if you would like to get involved, please contact 647840055.

AACC returning to the new normal Like everyone, Maria and the Pink ladies and Panthers have had to put most of its services on hold due to the pandemic but hopefully the charity will soon be back to normal and once Zenia Boulevard re-opens, volunteers will once again have its regular Monday presence there to enable the public to make appointments for cancer screening tests. The charity knows that ‘early detection saves lives’ and volunteers will be on site ready

to help from 12.00 midday until 2pm to book screening tests for breast, bowel, skin, cervical, prostate and ovarian cancers. It is also possible for people to log on to: www.pinkladies.es to book a screening test, simply click the tab for “screening test” and fill out the form. People can also contact the anti-cancer charity through its Facebook page ‘pinkladies/panthers’. The AACC hopes to open its office at Flamenca Beach

Commercial Centre very soon, this will be done in line with government guidelines as many of its volunteers are in the high risk age category. Unfortunately the annual “Walk for Life” event, which has been held at the Playa Flamenca promenade since 2010, had to be cancelled this year due to the pandemic restrictions. The charity is hopeful that it can make next year’s event bigger and better than ever.

Orihuela land auction falls flat The Councillor for Heritage, Rafael Almagro ( PP ) has confirmed today to the media that the auction procedure for municipal land for residential use on the Coast for which the municipality estimated an income of 20 million euros has been abandoned. Almagro has attributed the result to the uncertainty in the residential tourism construction and tourism sector caused by the health crisis after no the government received no bids at all from property developers. The councillor said that the procedure was opened before the alarm state. During that period there were several companies in the sector that were interested in the auction. Then the process was frozen due to the pandemic and it was restarted a few weeks ago, but there were no commercial inquiries, nor have there been any bids from companies. What is the City Council going to do now with what has been one of its main sources of extraordinary income in recent decades? Councillor Almagro explained that you can wait several months to reactivate the same auction

with the same plots or consider offering other land on the coast. He also explained that at the moment the process will not be restarted. Councillor Almagro has indicated that the municipality has an important municipal heritage of land classified as urban in Orihuela Costa despite the

fact that 30 years have passed since the approval of the General Plan. The deadline for submitting offers expired on 20th May after the announcement of the City Council to restart the procedure which was interrupted two months ago by the state of alarm to auction municipal heritage of urban land and try to raise up to twenty million euros with the auction of three municipal plots.

The Orihuela City Council had auctioned off three plots. The first one -and one of the most appreciated by the sector- is located on PAU-21, (Colinas Golf Resort), it has an area of 38,539 square meters of land, of which 24,194 square meters are buildable, and It has a starting price for the auction of 14.4 million euros. The second plot is located in the La Cuerda sector, with an area of 15,861 square meters and 7,726 square meters of roof buildable. This urbanisation is located between La Regia and Castillo de Don Juan, on the second line of the Orihuela coast. The starting price in this case is 4.2 million euros. The third plot is in the El Garbanzuelo sector (PAU-9), which has 6,951 square meters, with a buildable area of 3,659 square meters and a starting price of 1 million euros. This plot is located to the north of Orihuela Costa, on the second line of the coastal section and next to the Ausur highway, bordering Torrevieja. The money that would be raised from these sales could not have been used for current expenses, but must be invested again in real estate.

Re-opening of the Orihuela Costa Municipal Sport Centre moves forward

The Councillor for Sports, Víctor Bernabéu, has announced that the tender for the contract for the management services of the Municipal Sports Centre of Orihuela Costa, (CDM) is now underway. This contract consists of the running of day-to-day services, sports programs, activities and sports schools, rescue and lifeguard provision in the municipal swimming pool and the maintenance, cleaning and access of facilities and sports spaces of Orihuela Costa. The Procurement Department has already started the contracting file for

this service, which has a tender base budget of 1,099,331.80 euros, VAT included, and the duration of the contract will be two years. Councillor Bernabéu reminded people that this service is currently cancelled and the centre remains shut, following the termination of the contract with the previous company for not fulfilling the contract. He said: “Very soon we will be able to reactivate the CDM and the residents of the coast will be able to enjoy all the services again with all the guarantees that are given under the terms of the contract."

How to Be Greedy When Others Are Fearful "We simply attempt to be fearful when others are greedy and to be greedy only when others are fearful." This quote from the Oracle of Omaha (Warren Buffett) is repeated often, or at least part of it is. But saying something is a lot easier than doing it. As stock markets crash around the world, fear is widespread and contagious. However, there are three steps you can take to make the most of the opportunity to make your money work harder for you. 1. See the market crash for what it is – an opportunity Now is the time to see things for what they really are. Yes, the markets are dropping, but for

investors with cash, this is the time to make your move. You may be tempted to hoard cash, but that is the fearful way.

thinking long term can even mean looking at stocks that have benefited from the COVID-19 scare in a different way.

2. Review your current investments Many people think, my investments have worked in the past and now is not the time to change anything. Nothing could be further from the truth. What looked good last year, may well have taken a bigger hit and now is the time to look at different funds.

If this sounds scary, then help is at hand, but why should you choose Seagate to advise you? All our advisers were trained at Lloyds Bank in the UK. We pride ourselves on putting our clients first. We have a fully staffed office in Benijofar. Unlike other advisers on the Costas we believe in regular six monthly reviews with our clients to ensure that their pension or investment is on track.

3. Think long term Whatever else you do, think long term. Buffett was exactly right when he said, "If you aren't willing to own a stock for 10 years, don't even think about owning it for 10 minutes." By the way,

AA Real Members’ Stories Throughout 2020, each month, the Costa Blanca People features a real life story from real people about what it is like to suffer from Alcholism, what they did to overcome their addiction with alcoholic, and how they lead their lives today on their road of recovery. What is AA? Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. There are no dues or fees for AA membership, it is self supporting through its members’ own contributions. AA is not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organisation or institution, does not wish to engage in any controversy, neither endorses nor opposes any causes. Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety.

An AA Member’s Story... I was fortunate enough to have an extremely stable and secure upbringing, but as I progressed through high school, I never felt like I fitted in. I always felt inferior to others and suffered with low self esteem. At 15, I first tasted alcohol and it instantly gave me the confidence that I was lacking. It made me feel outgoing and confident; at last I had a solution to my feelings of insecurity. Any negative feelings I had, I would self medicate with

alcohol to escape reality. I started drinking every weekend, alcohol soon becoming a huge part of my life. One thing for certain was that once I had that first drink, I was unable to stop. I would drink into oblivion. As I got older, a lot of my friends started to settle down and drink less but I didn’t, in fact my drinking became more and more frequent, and due to my inability to have just 1 or 2 drinks, I was eventually drinking into blackout on a daily basis. At the age of 21, I remember writing in my diary that I had a problem with alcohol but I didn’t know how to stop drinking so I buried my head in the sand and continued my life in complete denial, pretending to others that I was just having some fun. When I lost my driving licence due to drink driving, I thought this would be enough to make me stop drinking but I just continued to drink more and more,

burying my head in the sand as usual. All of my partners were heavy drinkers enabling me to continue to drink heavily. As I progressed through life, my drinking also progressed until I was drinking to blackout every single day. If on the rare occasion, I did refrain from alcohol, I would be dripping with sweat unable to sleep so alcohol was the easiest solution. When I awoke in the morning after a blackout, I could not remember what I had said or done and relied on my phone to fill in the blanks. I would have overwhelming feelings of guilt, shame and embarrassment, not wanting to face people from the previous day in case I had upset or offended them. My self esteem was at an all time low after constantly humiliating myself and my anxiety levels were through the roof, relying on anti anxiety tablets just to get me through the day. I had constant pins

and needles in my hands and feet due to alcoholic neuropathy, along with widespread pain throughout my body due to stress and anxiety. My life was completely unmanageable. When I started a new relationship with a man, it didn’t take long for him to notice that I had a problem with alcohol. He would try to stop me drinking alcohol so I would hide it to enable me to drink it in secret. This is when I knew my problem was getting out of hand and I needed help. My parents were enlightened to the severity of my problem and together we drew up a plan. I was to see a psychiatrist who prescribed me some alcohol withdrawal pills, who advised me to attend AA meetings. After a lot of persuasion, I attended my first AA meeting. I didn’t need to be nervous as everybody was so welcoming and instantly made me feel at ease. As I listened to people telling their stories, I could identify with them and I knew instantly that I was in the right place. I soon started attending a meeting most days and building friendships with likeminded people all trying to achieve the same goal of sobriety. I finally felt like I belonged and a weight was lifted off my shoulders. The support was immense and before long, I had a close group of friends who I could share my feelings, doubts, fears and anxieties with who understood me because they were living with the same disease. My self esteem started to increase as I entered sobriety, no longer waking up terrified of what I had said or done the

night before. I started to feel proud of myself rather than ashamed and could walk with my head held high. I got a sponsor and started to work the 12 step program in AA. Initially, I was put off by the word ‘God’ but once it was explained that God is not a religious god, it is a god of your understanding, I realised that the 12 step program was in fact a spiritual program rather than a religious program. The steps have taught me a new way of life, changing the way that I deal with stressful situations without the need for alcohol. I now accept the things that I cannot change and understand that alcohol never solves a problem; it will just make the problem worse. I am now 15 months sober and I have my life back. Now that I am pain free with no pins and needles, I am playing sports again which were impossible whilst drinking. I no longer wake up with feelings of dread, shame and embarrassment and more importantly I have a relationship back with my family of which I am very grateful. The people I have met in AA are true friends for life rather than ‘drinking buddies’ who, looking back didn’t care for me at all. I now spend my time going to AA meetings, meeting friends for walks or coffee, meditation and being grateful for living. When I was drinking, I could not imagine a life without alcohol. If I can stop drinking, so can you! Elizabeth, Torrevieja Spain

GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP In a week where the entire of the UK wanted to know about Barnard Castle, the pound took an untidy turn, bobbing around and averaging 0.3% lower against other majors, covering cent and a half ranges against the euro and the US dollar in one day. Politics were stumbling blocks for the pound, although curiously it turned higher as the Prime Minister began his interview with Parliament’s Liaison Committee, even though the first topic was his top advisor Dominic Cummings. The recurrent message from Boris Johnson was for the media to move on, and while outside of the UK it is perhaps fair to assume that investors share that sentiment, not fussed about a quirky babysitting eye-test road trip, and whether he did or didn’t break lockdown guidance. However, sterling is driven predominantly by London and not by New York or Tokyo. London traders are notoriously sceptical about the pound. After the brief bounce as the committee started, sterling was on the back foot for the most of the day. The test and trace system launched this week, albeit with some technical glitches and two MP’s stating they’ve been told the system wouldn’t be fully operational at a local level until the end of June. Gloomy data surprisingly had little impact on sterling. Retail sales figures were just as awful as expected, with a 22.6% fall in April. Public sector net borrowing at £61.4 billion for Aprilwould have been a shock compared to the predicted £35 billion but furloughs, grants and subsidies have been scattered like confetti in recent weeks and ridiculously large deficits are the new normal. Next week sees the return of Brexit, when talks recommence.

EUR Euroland data was equally glum, but it’s now expected. However, the EC sentiment surveys and Spanish retail sales with a 31.6% monthly fall was eye watering nonetheless. Still, German business confidence was a glimmer of hope. Despite gross domestic product contracting by a quarterly 2.2% in Q1 as previously estimated, two of IFO’s three business confidence measures improved in May, with only the current assessment lower by half a point. The performance may have something to do the European Commission presenting its own €750 billion plan ten days after France and Germany proposed a €500 billion rescue package for member countries hit by Covid-19. The package will be part of the next long-term EU budget as long as the EC can secure the unanimous support of all 27 members, and would be financed by bond issues, to be repaid through future EU budgets. Distribution would take the form of €500 bn in grants and €250bn of loans, and that mix is hoped to win over the support of the ‘frugal four’ – countries which instinctively oppose the exercise. Investors are generally in favour of the scheme, which they see as positive for European cohesion and the long-term survival of the single currency. The upward effect of the EC proposal on the euro was offset to an extent by the downward pressure of an almost pessimistic speech by ECB president Christine Lagarde. She expects the Eurozone economy to shrink by between 8% and 12% this year, including the 3.8% contraction that took place in the first quarter. On balance, though, the euro was wanted, and took first place for the day with an average gain of 0.5%.The euro put in a slightly above average performance for the week, adding half a cent against sterling.

Virtual future of doctor surgeries On-line or telephone GP appointments and other consultations could be the future of healthcare – and its potential was discussed in a video-conference meeting with more than 40 experts in the field this week. E-Salud, Cambio de Modelo Sanitario y Covid-19 ('E-Health: Change in Healthcare Approaches and Covid-19') organised in part by the Merck Health Foundation was born from the premise, cited by its CEO Carmen González Madrid that the pandemic has led to a sharp rise in use of technology between patients and doctors and that this could be taken advantage of and developed further. Tools including Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, video-conferences, telephonebased assistance and 'online medicine' were examined from a bio-ethical, legal and patients' viewpoint. Head of Healthcare Legal Advisors Fernando Abellán said: “There are reasons to believe that the processes and pace of 'digital health' are set to speed up. The risk of contagion is going to be around for a long while and will extend the need to use technology to reduce the presence of patients in hospitals and surgeries.” A 'Five Ps' approach, proposed by medical director of Madrid's San Carlos Clinical University Hospital Julio Mayol could be the starting point: Prediction, prevention, personalisation, populationwide, and participative. Dr Mayol says: “We need to reinforce the idea of health against disease; what

we've seen is that when public health is affected en masse, the health service becomes overwhelmed – a crisis in providing medical services, and a crisis that's present throughout the healthsickness cycle among society.” Geriatrician Dr Salomé Martín, head of technical development at Eulen Social Health, stresses that the elderly population's ability to adapt to new technology is underestimated. “We all thought the elderly were not going to be capable of using a tablet or a mobile phone, and during the pandemic they've learnt how to, and this has allowed them to communicate with their families,” she says. In fact, technology companies worldwide specialising in 'tablets for the elderly' are experiencing success – 'everyday' language, large icons and simple functions, such as 'call [son/daughter]', 'watch news', and so on, have proven to be easy enough for even those with dementia to figure out. This type of technology could be

introduced to care homes, some of the worst-hit establishments during the pandemic, Dr Martín says. Medical director and head of innovation for new services and Sanitas hospitals, Dr Domingo Marzal, says GP appointments 'are already on mobile phones' and the use of these during the Covid-19 crisis soared within his company: Throughout the whole of 2019, only 42,000 video-based consultations took place, but in 2020, over 65,000 were held in the month of April alone. “It was a baptism by fire to see if the digital strategy we were aiming for was going to work or not. And e-health turned out to be very important when it came to the rise in mental health emergencies,” Dr Marzal said. Processes, ITC and systems manager at Quirónsalud private hospitals network, Dr Ángel Blanco Rubio believes 'digitalisation' is what is now bringing about 'the biggest change ever in medicine', and that the 'great change' within this is that medicine is becoming 'more patient-centred'. “We need to switch from a doctorpatient relationship to a patient-doctor relationship,” he said. “In fact, the pandemic has done more for the digital transformation than any company, institution, politician, doctor or hospital manager has done: It's moved the whole thing forward in just two months. Many healthcare organisations have gone from zero to 75% online consultations just during the weeks of the virus.”

Spain’s 43,000 excess coronavirus deaths Between 1st March and 12th May, Spain recorded 43,295 more deaths than what would be considered normal for this time of the year, based on past mortality rates. This is up 52 percent from the expected deaths for the period. The figure includes 27,302 confirmed fatalities from Covid-19, but there are an additional 15,993 deaths that show up on civil registries but are not recorded as coronavirus victims, even though many of them probably are. Last Wednesday, a system update with new data sent in by civil registries turned up 12,000 more excess deaths than were previously known. Of these, 7,300 were in Catalonia (mostly in Barcelona), 2,500 in the Madrid region and 800 in Castilla-La Mancha. The Covid-19 death toll provided by the Health Ministry only counts cases where the deceased were tested for the virus. But there are infected people who died without getting tested, and who may have passed away outside a hospital – inside their homes or at care facilities – and do not show up in the official statistics. But just how many are they? The best estimates are provided by the civil registries, which send their figures to the Mortality Monitoring System (MoMo) run by the Carlos III Health Institute. In late April, using consolidated data, there were over 185,000 deaths, compared with expected figures of around 145,000 to May. And that is

despite the fact that the entire population had been mostly confined to their homes since 15th March. Without these mobility restrictions, the death tally would be even higher. Excess deaths are calculated using a mathematical model that provides the number of expected deaths under normal conditions. There are typically spikes during heat waves or flu season. But the coronavirus crisis is eclipsing all previous events. The data provided by MoMo reveals that the excess deaths during the current crisis are not comparable to anything that has happened in the last two years. In the summer of 2018 there were around 700 excess deaths due to a heat wave, a 2 percent rise from the expected number. And in January 2019 there were approximately 3,000 excess deaths, very likely from the flu, up 4 percent from expected figures. The excess death figures are suffering from reporting delays. One of the problems with regional civil registry records is that deaths are notified two to three days late. And during the coronavirus crisis, these time frames have become even longer. Also, some civil registries have not yet digitalised their records, which creates even greater delays. The present analysis takes this into account, and focuses on deaths that occurred until 12th May. Regional differences Data collected by MoMo shows that the cost of the coronavirus crisis is not the same across Spain’s regions. Madrid and Castilla-La Mancha have registered twice

as many deaths as expected. In Madrid, the figures on excess deaths suggest that over 6,000 people probably died from Covid-19 yet are not showing up in the official statistics. In La Rioja, which recorded one of Spain’s first outbreaks, deaths were up 48 percent from expected figures in recent weeks. In Navarre there was a spike in deaths a week ago, up 56 percent from what would be considered normal. And in the Basque Country there were 40 percent more deaths than expected. At the other end of the spectrum, the least affected regions are the Canary Islands, Murcia, Galicia and Andalusia, where observed deaths were less than 15

percent above the expected figure. The Valencia region recorded 1,197 deaths to April 10, around 20 percent more than expected. Other factors Another factor to take into account is that the mathematical models for predicting deaths were not created for lockdown situations. These models probably factor in fatalities from events like car accidents, which are currently at historically low levels due to the confinement measures. This means that the number of deaths caused by Covid19 could be even greater. The excess fatality figures may also

include deaths not directly caused by Covid-19, such as people who died of other causes when the health system was overstretched and could not provide the same kind of care as under normal conditions. Confinement measures and fear of going to the hospital may have also delayed ill people from visiting a doctor. The true impact of the coronavirus on mortality will only be more precisely known at a future date, when it becomes possible to analyze registered deaths by various causes; the National Statistics Institute (INE) releases this information on an annual basis.

Football clubs launch souvenir masks for fans His feelings have changed I have been seeing a guy for over a year, and I thought we had a solid relationship. We got on famously and he was very attentive. We had been planning our future, even talking about marriage and children and everything was looking rosy. Out of the blue at the end of February my boyfriend was contacted by his ex-wife. They had split four years previously with her telling him that she no longer loved him, so he left. Then in March, the virus hit and suddenly we were in lockdown. He works away and so said he had to stay where he was because the police would not allow him to travel to another province. Since then we have kept in touch by messaging and video call. But things haven’t felt the same. When I have brought up our future plans in the conversation, and he was reluctant to talk about it. Something has changed. He admitted that he was speaking with his ex and that she wanted to get back together, which has upset me greatly. Two days ago we spoke on video call and it looked to me as though he was not at the same residence, although he said he was and just in a room that he had not called from before. I strongly suspect he is with his ex wife. I asked him if he still loved me and if he still wanted to get married, and he said of course he was ‘fond of me’, but we would have to talk about the future when we are able to meet. Saying that he is ‘fond of you’ is rather different than saying he loves you. He also said you needed to talk when you next saw each other. You suspected something had changed, and I think you may be right. I think sadly the writing could be on the wall and he may well be back with his ex wife, or at least planning on it. You could ask him outright next time you speak to him. Personally I wouldn’t delay a frank talk – this is eating you up and it’s better to know where you stand. WRITE TO SARA IN CONFIDENCE. Spain's top football teams have started selling protective masks bearing their colours and logo, with everyone from Barça and Atlético de Madrid through to Huesca FC now at it. Nobody is quite sure which country, team or even sport the idea first occurred to, given that the United States' national basketball association, the NBA, is now selling souvenir masks for its various teams with the proceeds going to charity, whilst Bayern Munich has recycled club scarves to make nice warm masks in case the weather does not improve in the next few weeks or they still need to be worn in winter. The latter had planned to give out its official scarves during the now-aborted match for the return of the Champions' League at the Allianz Arena against Chelsea FC, to celebrate the German club's 120th anniversary. Instead, the scarves have become masks bearing the slogan, 'WeKickCorona'. FC Barcelona is selling its own blue-and-maroon official souvenir masks at its Barça Store on the Passeig de Gràcia, the city's main shopping street, and also online via the Barça Store at the club's Camp Nou stadium. They will roll out to future Barça Stores due to open over the next few weeks. These masks are reusable and protection against Covid-19 transmission is guaranteed by the

manufacturers for up to 40 washes, and for a maximum of eight hours between washes. As well as the adult versions, masks designed to fit children aged three to six and also seven to 12 have been designed. By law, everyone aged six or over is required to wear a mask in any enclosed space, on public transport, in private transport where one or more occupants is not from the same household as the driver, and in outside areas where social distancing – a minimum of two metres between people from different households – cannot be guaranteed. Real Sociedad has jumped on the wagon (see first picture), and actually has a waiting list for its souvenir masks. Huesca FC has launched its own souvenir mask line, Atlético de Madrid's are about to hit the shelves in various models, and Deportivo La Coruña's are still under construction but, when they go on sale, will come in at as little as €5 to €7. So far, the masks on sale are of the reusable variety, which works out cheaper and is also kinder to the environment, given that disposable masks are not normally made with material that

can be recycled easily and, in fact, should not be set aside for recycling, since this poses a risk for plant workers when handling them. Charity mask projects are out there, too: The Ricardo Tormo Circuit in Cheste, near Valencia, used for two-wheeled motorsport – most famously, for the final MotoGP race of each season – is selling commemorative masks online with all proceeds going to Cáritas, the nationwide Catholic Church-run charity which provides food parcels and basic financial help to low-income and no-income households in Spain and abroad.

Zenia Boulevard tightens up safety and hygiene measures for reopening The centre has a thorough cleaning and disinfection protocol in place in toilets and communal areas, a real-time restricted entry system and increased security presence Zenia Boulevard, managed by Ceetrus and CBRE Global Investors, revealed a meticulous series of planned hygiene measures to guarantee that customers and employees alike can be confident of their safety. The shopping centre in Orihuela Costa, has installed more than 20 points with hydroalcoholic gel hand sanitiser dispensers and disposable gloves across the whole centre. Plus, there is a special group of dedicated staff working to keep the centre fully disinfected, even out of opening hours. Access to the centre and customer safety measures Some of the measures that are in effect at the shopping centre in Phase 2 include a real-time restricted entry system. The system continuously monitors the number of vehicles in the car park and ensures the number of people allowed inside

the centre during any particular phase is within the permitted limit. Another measure is that the public address system will become particularly important, as well as the special set of posters that people will come across as they move through the shopping centre, reminding them to observe good practice and do their shopping as safely as possible. The use of face masks, social distancing, paying by card or by mobile phone, preference in the use of lifts and frequent hand washing are just a few of the reminders and tips that Zenia Boulevard will be giving customers. “Our main aim is to make customers feel safe, calm and confident, because Zenia Boulevard is an open shopping centre, with wide walkways and with enough space for everyone to respect safe social distancing. Plus, since the start of the State of Alarm, we've been working on this special reopening plan to ensure that safety and hygiene are top priority. We want our customers to choose us as their preferred place for shopping and leisure, with complete confidence and safe in the knowledge that they're in the very best hands”, says Cristina Ros, Manager of Zenia

Boulevard. Special recommendations For shopping purposes, all of Zenia Boulevard’s shops will have their own special protocols in place for limiting the number of people who can be inside at any particular time and they will be informing customers as they arrive. Posters will be displayed specifying the number of people allowed in each premises at a time so customers are aware that they will have to wait their turn. The shopping centre has been working alongside shops to organise access and set up queueing systems with barriers and posters reminding everyone to observe social distancing while they wait. Zenia Boulevard has also taken the decision to deactivate all the digital store directories to prevent them from being used. Instead, customers will find a map of the shopping centre with the locations of all shops, so customers will still be able to make use of this service to find what they

are looking for as quickly as possible. In Phase 2, all rest areas remain closed With the aim of making everyone feel safe and confident across all its facilities, Zenia Boulevard has closed the ‘rest spots’ in communal areas, the children's area in Plaza Mayor and the centre fountain. Plus, there is an increased security presence to keep order and ensure the rules are adhered to. In terms of hygiene measures, the centre has dedicated cleaning staff in each toilet block to ensure cleaning is

done every 30 minutes, and cleaning will also be stepped up in sensitive areas such as handrails, door handles, lifts, etc. Another measure is that the restaurant area known as Food Xperience has been reorganised and reduced to ensure social distancing and comfort for customers and to adhere to the permitted number of customers.

Protecting your face from compulsory mask wearing Face masks are here to stay. The Spanish government recommended that everyone wear a cloth face covering in public, especially in areas where it’s difficult to maintain a two-metre distance from others. The government changed its initial guidelines in an effort to prevent the spread of COVID-19, which is easily transmitted from personto-person, even if an individual has no symptoms. But for all the good they do, you may be noticing a few annoying problems beyond your foggy glasses: itchy skin, pesky pimples, and oily blackheads, to name a few. That’s because constantly wearing a face mask can inadvertently do a number on your skin. Face masks can be harmful to the skin in two ways. First, direct friction can damage the outer skin layer, leading to irritation and inflammation. Second, masks trap humidity, sweat, and oil on the skin. In turn, this creates an environment that encourages microorganisms to flourish, worsening conditions like acne and rosacea. Face masks are essential, and you should not stop wearing them because of skin issues. But you can mitigate any potential damage by giving your skin a bit of love and taking care of your face

coverings properly. Wear a skin-friendly face mask. Not all masks are created equal, at least when it comes to keeping your skin clear. Wearing a cotton mask or a medical mask made of natural fibres are gentler on the skin as compared to synthetics, and less likely to cause skin irritation. Cotton masks are especially helpful during exercise, when there’s increased friction and moisture around your face. To keep them from being “extra rough on the skin” make sure to choose a 100 percent cotton material. Avoid makeup, but don’t skip sunscreen. Do not wear makeup under your face mask. It may become trapped on the skin, block the pores, or cause skin irritation. Since no one will see underneath your covering anyway, it’s easier than ever to give your skin a break and go foundationfree. Sunscreen is a different story, though. You’re not

safe from sunburn just because you have a mask on. Apply a moisturiser with SPF or a face sunscreen layered on top of a lightweight moisturiser. Look for an oil-free, noncomedogenic product, as these are formulated to be non-pore clogging. Make sure you slather that SPF on your entire face to help you avoid a dreaded mask tan. You can expect to see many COVID tan lines this summer if people are not wearing

sunscreens....can you imagine?! Cleanse your skin afterwards. Just like you should prep with SPF before you leave, you should immediately take care of your skin when you get back (after washing your hands thoroughly, of course). After getting home, take off your mask and fully wash your face with a gentle cleanser. This will get rid of any built-up dirt, oil, and stray mask fibres, without stripping the skin. Then, apply your moisturiser to help combat any irritation and dryness from an extra cleanse. Wash your mask the right way. Cloth masks “should be routinely washed depending on the frequency of use,” which is technically once per wear, especially if you’re exercising. But there’s a hidden issue with repeated laundering: detergent. You need to properly care for cotton masks just as you would any other garment that comes in contact with your skin. Do not overuse your detergent - this can cause detergent molecules to become embedded within the weave of the fabric and causing direct skin irritation. Opt for detergents without dyes and fragrance.

Relieving neck and shoulder pain After a long day at work, sitting on the sofa or through general stresses and tension many of us complain of neck and shoulder pain. It’s inevitable to feel discomfort after being seated upright for eight or more hours a day. Luckily, there are some yoga moves to stretch out our neck and shoulders and relieve the pain. Start with a window pane stretch. With both your arms behind your head, grab onto both elbows, forming a rectangle. Move your shoulders and neck to one side and hold for a nice, deep stretch. Remember to do the same stretch on the other side. Next, transition into the ear-toshoulder stretch. Place your left hand gently over your right ear. Slowly pull your head to your left shoulder for a deep stretch in the right side on your neck. Repeat the exercise on the opposite side. For the final pose, we are going to ‘thread the needle’. Start on all fours on your mat, then take your left arm and slide it through the square that your right leg and arm make. As you move your arm through the square, bring your shoulder to the mat for a great stretch in your shoulders and back. As always, remember to repeat on the other side of your body. Like any yoga flow, finish in prayer and take a minute to reflect.

Foods that strengthen your immune system Staying healthy and avoiding infections have never been more important. Social distancing can help keep other people’s germs from landing on you, and frequent hand-washing will kill them if they do reach you. But what can you do to improve your body’s ability to fight off germs if- despite your best efforts - you pick them up? What you eat can make a big difference in how well your immune system functions. Experts say that: “It’s really important for older people to have very nutrient-dense diets”. Immune responses decline with age, and many older adults have chronic low-level inflammation and underlying health conditions, like heart disease and diabetes, that can also hamper the body’s defences. And they may become less efficient at absorbing many infection-fighting vitamins and minerals. Getting your immune system in battle-ready shape won’t happen overnight. “I don’t think you can suddenly change your diet today and tomorrow your immune system is happier,” says Philip C. Calder, Ph.D., a professor of nutritional immunology at the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom. But shoring up your diet now can pay off in the long run with fewer sick days and better overall health. How Immunity Works The immune system has often been compared to a police force. Made up of an intricate network of molecules, cells, tissues, and organs, it’s on patrol everywhere in the body. One part of the force, the innate immune system, is on the front lines - in skin, saliva, the GI and respiratory tracts, and elsewhere - and acts quickly to thwart foreign invaders. The other part, the adaptive (or acquired) immune system, works over days to track down bad actors that have breached the first-line defenders and helps develop antibodies against them.

The Power of Plants

The best diet for your body’s defences is one that’s based on whole, minimally processed food that’s mostly cooked at home. Eating too many foods high in saturated fats, sugars, and salt can weaken immunity. In addition to multiple nutrients and phytochemicals, plantbased foods also provide fibre, which feeds the healthy bacteria in your gut. These bacteria aid immunity, too. Fruits and vegetables supply most of the body’s need for vitamins A and C, which are important germ fighters. Produce is also generally rich in antioxidants, which tamp down inflammation and protect immune (and other) cell membranes from damaging oxidation. Aim for at least 2½ cups of vegetables and 2 cups

of fruit per day. Mix up the type and colour of your produce to get a wide variety of nutrients. Tucker recommends having at least one green vegetable every day, such as spinach, kale, Swiss chard, broccoli, rocket, or cabbage. Bell peppers, potatoes, sweet potatoes, and carrots are also high in vitamin A and/or vitamin C. Citrus fruits are high in C, as are tomatoes, strawberries, and kiwifruit. Nuts and seeds are great sources of crucial vitamins and minerals, fibre, protein, and healthy fats. Vitamin E is a potent antioxidant, and most people don’t come close to consuming the daily need (15 mg). Tucker says munching on a handful of sunflower seeds or almonds every day will do the trick. Almonds also provide copper and magnesium, which studies show are involved in DNA repair and antibody production. Sunflower seeds have selenium, copper, folate, and zinc. (Deficiencies of zinc account for 16 percent of lower respiratory

Choose Healthy Meat and Dairy “You need animal-based foods to provide the things that plants can’t supply enough of,” Calder says. “A good example is vitamin B12, where meat is a very good source.” Some vitamins and minerals are more accessible in animal foods than in plant foods. Zinc, for example, is more readily absorbed from seafood and meat than from beans and whole grains. Adequate protein also has the building blocks for immune cells.

Meat and fish. While you don’t need either on your plate at every meal - a few times a week is fine - they do supply key nutrients. Lean meat and poultry have ample B vitamins (especially vitamin B12, which about 20 percent of older adults are deficient in), iron, selenium, and zinc. Shellfish is a good source of zinc, copper, and selenium. And fatty fish like salmon, tuna, and mackerel are important sources of omega-3 fats as well as B vitamins, selenium, and vitamin D, which may protect against upper respiratory tract infections and overresponses by the immune system.

What About Supplements? Because the components of the immune system are so varied, keeping it healthy means getting an array of vitamins and minerals, which often work together in dozens of immune-boosting roles. Vitamin A, for example, is important for healthy skin and GI-tract cells. Vitamins C and E are antioxidants that protect cells and tissues from the flood of damaging free radicals produced when the immune system is fighting off an invader. Making new immune cells and initiating an immune response requires B vitamins (B6, B12, and folate). Other nutrients that fuel your immune system are copper, iron, magnesium, omega-3 fats, protein, selenium, vitamin D, and zinc.

Supplements for the immune system have been flying off store shelves recently. But experts warn against using them in most cases. You run the risk of getting too much of a nutrient. Too much zinc, for example, can block copper absorption, and high levels of folate can mask a vitamin B12 deficiency. Herbal and other remedies, like elderberry tincture and colloidal silver (silver molecules suspended in liquid), which have been advertised on social media as a way to destroy the coronavirus, are unproven and potentially harmful. IP-6 (phytic acid), touted

infections across the globe.) Hazelnuts, pistachios, and walnuts are brimming with B6. Beans and whole grains contribute nutrients and contain fibre to help replenish healthy intestinal bacteria. Lentils are a good source of copper, folate, and iron; garbanzos and black beans provide zinc; and cranberry beans are high in folate. Whole-grain breads and cereals and whole grains themselves (barley, bulgur, wheatberries, oats, and quinoa, among others) supply B vitamins, copper, iron, magnesium, and zinc. Healthy oils, such as olive, flaxseed, and canola, supply omega-3 fats, which help keep inflammation in check and regulate immune cell activity. A tablespoon or two of an oil-based dressing can also help your body absorb antioxidant carotenoids (which the body converts to vitamin A) and other nutrients in greens and other vegetables.

Dairy foods add to your stores of vitamin A, some Bs, zinc, magnesium, and selenium. Fortified dairy products - such as milk and yogurt - can supply hard-to-get vitamin D. Yogurt (plain is best so you avoid added sugars) is also teeming with probiotic bacteria, which help keep the intestinal microbiome healthy. In two studies involving healthy older people, one lasting more than 8 weeks and the other more than 12 weeks, those who ate about 3 ounces of yogurt daily had fewer colds than those who drank milk.

as an antioxidant, can lead to calcium, iron, and zinc deficiencies, and polyphenols from green tea extracts may reduce the absorption of iron, folate, and vitamin C. It’s best to get the nutrients you need from food so that you don’t lose out on other beneficial ingredients, like phytonutrients. The exception is vitamin D. Because more than 80 percent of older people don’t get enough from diet alone, so experts recommend taking a supplement. The daily need for people ages 51 to 70 is 600 IU; over 70, it’s 800 IU.

People who smoke more receptive to Covid19 The lungs of people who smoke may contain more of the receptors that the new coronavirus uses to invade cells. This could explain why people with the virus who also smoke appear to be particularly vulnerable to severe illness. The majority of people who acquire SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, experience mild-tomoderate symptoms and will fully recover without hospital treatment. However, several studies suggest that people who smoke are significantly more likely than people who do not to develop a severe form of the illness. For example, according to a recent study of COVID-19 cases in hospitals in mainland China, 11.8 percent of people who smoked had a non-severe form of the disease, while 16.9 percent had severe disease. To break into cells and start replicating itself, the virus latches onto a protein receptor called angiotensinconverting enzyme 2 (ACE2), which is present in the cells’ membranes. Researchers at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in New York wanted to find out if people who smoke have more of these receptors in their lungs. This would potentially make them more vulnerable to the infection. Their results have undergone peer review and will appear in the journal Developmental Cell. A preprint of the

paper is available on bioRxiv. “We started gathering all the data we could find,” says senior study author Dr. Jason Sheltzer. “When we put it all together and started analysing it, we saw that both mice that had been exposed to smoke in a laboratory and humans who were current smokers had significant upregulation of ACE2.” Dr. Sheltzer and colleagues managed to trace the additional ACE2 receptors in people who smoke to goblet cells. These are lung cells that secrete mucus. Smoking increases the number of goblet cells, which helps protect the airways from the irritants in smoke. An unfortunate consequence of this may be to make people who smoke more vulnerable to severe SARS-CoV-2 infections. Having more goblet cells means that they have more of the ACE2 receptors that the virus uses to invade cells. There is a debate, however, over whether smoking is protective or harmful in the context of COVID-19. For example, a study in The Lancet Infectious Diseases found that people who smoke and who have symptoms of influenza or a respiratory infection were less likely than people who do not smoke to test positive for SARS-CoV-2 in primary care. However, the authors of this study point out that this may be because

people who smoke are more likely to have a cough and may be more likely than others to submit themselves for testing. This would lower their apparent risk of testing positive. Another study, which has not undergone peer review, claims that people who smoke were underrepresented among patients hospitalized with the infection in China. On the basis of this, the authors speculate that the nicotine in cigarettes

In his review of this study, Dr. Sheltzer questions the validity of a figure for the prevalence of smoking in China that the scientists rely upon to make their conclusions. “The claim that smoking protects against COVID-19 has gotten so much press attention largely because it’s counterintuitive, but it’s very likely to be wrong,” Dr. Sheltzer told Medical News

Today. “An abundance of data including high-quality meta-analyses demonstrate that smokers tend to have more severe cases of COVID-19 than non-smokers do.” Dr. Sheltzer and colleagues acknowledge that their own study also had some limitations. For example, it relied on data for the expression of the gene that makes ACE2, rather than direct measurements of the amount of the receptor within cell membranes.

Spain to give basic income support Some Spaniards are about to receive additional financial help as the government pushes through the first nationwide basic income, but there are doubts the initiative will reduce high levels of unemployment and inequality. The Socialist-led coalition government will be spending about 3 billion euros every year to support poorer citizens. The basic income is meant to reach 850,000 households and 2.5 million citizens. Spain has a population of about 46 million people. The plan to install a basic income was a pre-electoral promise, but it was accelerated due to the coronavirus pandemic and its economic fallout. Households will receive financial help based on their income and the number of children or dependents it has. Government officials have said the minimum amount an adult will receive will be about half the minimum wage, which is 1,108 euros per month. However, the final details are being ironed out this week in parliament. “I don’t see what problem it can solve,” Zsolt Darvas, senior fellow at the Brussels-based think tank, said. He said that the aim shouldn’t be to give people an incentive to

stay home without work. Rather, the stimulus should target those losing their jobs or for companies to avoid having to lay people off. In an interview last week, Spain’s Social Security Minister Jose Luis Escriva said the new basic income would not discourage people from searching for jobs. “It is compatible with having a salary. In Spain, there is a significant portion of workers having a very, very low salary or sub-employment,” he told Reuters. Spain has one of the highest levels of unemployment in the euro area and this is set to worsen given the Covid-19 crisis. At the end of March, 14.5 percent of Spain’s working population was out of a job. Finland and Italy have worked on similar programs, but there is no evidence their schemes reduced unemployment levels. In addition, Spain also has one of the highest levels of inequality across Europe as a result of the sovereign debt crisis of 2011. Federico Steinberg, a senior analyst at the Elcano Royal Institute think tank in Spain, told CNBC last week that there are two simultaneous debates: one over whether the basic income will be enough to address the economic

reality; and a second one over its impact on public finances. He said that the new policy “is a good idea” as inequality has risen, but it should come with commitments for reforms. “We have a polarized political system, but it is well diagnosed we need fiscal reform,” he said. The International Monetary Fund said in March that “sustainable fiscal measures are crucial for reducing elevated public debt over the medium term and addressing the persistent deficit in the pension system.” “Intensified structural policies should aim to boost productivity, thereby lifting the economy’s potential and improving public debt dynamics,” the Fund also said. More recently, the Bank of Spain asked for a gradual adjustment plan so the government can restore public finances in the aftermath of the pandemic. “It should also be underpinned by a structural reform program that raises the economy’s growth capacity and, therefore, broadens the tax bases needed to fund the desired level of expenditure,” Pablo Hernández de Cos, governor of the Bank of Spain, said in Parliament last week.

UK plans to roll out Covid vaccine by September Business Secretary Alok Sharma has said the clinical trial for a Covid-19 vaccine at the University of Oxford is progressing well. The business secretary added that the UK Government had so far invested £47 million in vaccine programmes at Oxford and also Imperial College London, and announced a further £84 million in new funding “to help accelerate their work”. He said: “This new money will help massproduce the Oxford vaccine so that if current trials are successful we have dosages to start vaccinating the UK population straight away.” Pharmaceutical firm AstraZeneca have finalised a “global licensing agreement” with Oxford University with Government support. “This means that if the vaccine is successful AstraZeneca will work to make 30 million doses available by September for the UK as part of an agreement for over 100 million doses in total,” Mr Sharma said. He said “the UK will be first to get access” but that the Government would also ensure that “we’re able to make the vaccine available to developing

countries at the lowest possible cost”. It would be a major achievement to create a vaccine in such a short period, with many experts anticipating that such work would take at least a year. The need for a vaccine is obvious and effort is being made by various parties to make it happen. “In order to definitively conquer this

disease we need to find a safe, workable vaccine," Mr Sharma said. “Last month I announced a new vaccine task force to co-ordinate the efforts of Government, academia and industry in the critical mission to find a vaccine. “I’m very proud of how quickly our scientists and researchers have come

together in their efforts developing a vaccine that will combat coronavirus.” He added: “The first clinical trial of the Oxford vaccine is progressing well with all phase one participants having received their vaccine dose on schedule earlier this week. “The speed at which Oxford University has designed and organised these complex trials is genuinely unprecedented.” Mr Sharma said the Government has now committed more than a quarter of a billion pounds towards developing a vaccine in the UK. But he warned that there are no certainties and it is possible trials may not lead to a successful coronavirus vaccine. “So we also need to look at other drug treatments and therapeutics for those who get the virus,” he said at the Downing Street daily briefing. He said the Government is working with scientists in the collaborative UK programme Accord to find a drug. “Today I can report six drugs have entered initial live clinical trials,” he said. “If positive results are seen they will advance to larger scale trials.”

Taking Care of your Car For many people, learning how to take care of your car can be confusing. What goes where? How often does it need a service? How important is regular car? But a regular routine of TLC can mean a longer life for your vehicle, and cheaper running costs overall. The average age of all cars still in use in Spain is 11 years. As car design advances, it isn´t long before technology takes over and with more modern vehicles becoming safer, knowing a bit about maintenance is crucial, and it’s worth it to keep it running at peak performance while you have it. Taking care of your car can also improve mileage and reduce your overall maintenance costs. Here are our top tips for taking care of your car: 1. Read the Manual It might seem like an obvious thing to say but from televisions to automobiles, so many of us ignore the most important accessory that accompanies our purchase, the manual. Become familiar with your car’s manual to take care of it properly. The maintenance schedule, proper parts, and other details vary from vehicle to vehicle. Always refer to your manual if you have a question about your vehicle care. It’s a great resource for troubleshooting vehicle issues.

If you do not have an owner’s manual, you can usually obtain one from the dealer or online. 2. Keep it Clean Cleaning your vehicle regularly is not only important to keep it looking good but scrubbing your car or running it through the car wash isn’t just about making it sparkly. Dirt, salt, sand, and other debris that can get on your car leads to rust. It’s the biggest problem in the winter if you live somewhere with snow or ice. But it’s a good idea to wash your car regularly year-round to remove anything that could cause it to deteriorate.

Waxing your car after you wash it gives you a little more protection against weather elements, bugs, and other things outdoors.

Problems often get worse if you let them go on for too long. You could end up with major engine problems if you don’t handle things quickly.

3. Regular Maintenance Oil changes are probably what come to mind when you think of regular maintenance. The timing of oil changes depends on your vehicle and the type of oil you use. Full synthetic oil requires less frequent changes.

7. Care for the Tyres We talk about tyres quite a lot. Scroll through our page for more tips on tyre care. They might not seem like one of the most important parts, but your tires are responsible for getting you safely to your destination.

Other routine maintenance tasks include checking tyres, replacing fluids, replacing filters, and checking belts. Your owner’s manual should give you a schedule for those tasks, but you will be better off asking a qualified mechanic to carry out the work. Maintaining the maintenance schedule and records adds value to the car if you choose to sell it.

Keeping them properly inflated is the easiest way to do that.

Note how the oil looks. If it’s dark and dirty, it’s time to change it. Make sure your coolant reservoir has enough antifreeze in it. You’ll also want to top up your windshield washer fluid regularly, so you can see clearly with clean windows. 9. Protect Your Car If you have a garage or carport available, park your car there as much as possible. This protects it from potentially damaging weather elements, including

4. Inspect It Regularly Look at little closer at different parts of your car to make sure they’re still in good condition. Replace windshield wiper blades regularly to ensure they work well. If they’re torn or worn out, they can scratch your windshield. Check the filters regularly to make sure they’re not dirty. If they are, replace them. Turn on your headlights and check to make sure they’re working. Look at the lights on the back as well. Have someone help you check the brake lights with you. 5. Drive Carefully The easier you are on your car when you drive, the better it should hold up over time. Excessive speeds can be hard on the vehicle, but how quickly you accelerate and decelerate can be more important. Stepping on the accelerator or brakes hard can be difficult on the vehicle. Aggressive driving and sharp corners can also be hard on your tyres. Avoid heavy loads in your vehicle, including trailers that you tow or roof racks. 6. Fix Problems Quickly If you notice any issues with your car, have it checked out right away. Little squeaks, bangs, or shakes might not seem like much, but they could be a sign of something bigger.

Each 1 psi drop in your tire pressure can decrease fuel mileage by 0.2%. That doesn’t sound like much, but it adds up if your tyres are a lot lower than normal. Low tyre pressure also increases the chances of major problems due to the extra friction created. The tires can overheat, wear prematurely, or cause a blowout. Blowouts can lead to crashes and leave debris in the road that puts other drivers at risk. Check tyre pressure regularly, especially if you think one or more tires look low. Replace your tyres before the tread gets too low. 8. Maintain Fluid Levels Your car relies on lots of fluids to keep things running smoothly. Your mechanic should check those fluids when you take your car in for routine maintenance. But it’s a good idea to check them regularly between appointments to ensure you keep them full. Check your oil between oil changes to make sure it falls between the minimum and maximum levels on the dipstick.

UV rays and hail. Avoid parking under trees when possible. Branches could fall on your vehicle, and some trees drop sap, pinecones, and other debris that can damage your paint. 10. Use Quality Products Using quality products on and in your vehicle can make it last longer. Choose original manufacturer parts when you need to replace something. Use high-quality fuel and oil in your vehicle. Low-quality fuel can be dirty, which can affect your fuel filters and fuel injectors. Saving a few euro on lower-quality products usually isn’t worth it if your goal is to extend the life of your car. Learn How to Take Care of Your Car Figuring out how to take care of your car isn’t too difficult once you have the basics under control. The time and effort to handle those basic care tasks pays off with a vehicle that lasts longer and uses fuel more efficiently.
