Basic income could be paid soon Spain’s Minister for Social Security, José Luis Escrivá, has said that Spain’s ‘minimum vital income’ payment will be sent to the most vulnerable households as soon as possible. News from the Prime Minister this weekend could see the payment received by some families

within the next three weeks. Escrivá also claimed that the payment will remain in place after the Covid-19 crisis has passed, saying in an interview “It is going to be structural, permanent, it's here to stay. It Continued on page 3

Continued from page 1 party debate as soon as possible to discuss a new budget. Addressing the nation on Sunday through a televised video conference, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced that the government is making an unprecedented effort to supply the regions with a €16 billion fund to be spent on health and education in the wake of the Covid-19 crisis. Sánchez stated that beginning on June 26th, a total of 225,000 people will begin to receive payments from the new minimum vital income scheme. The scheme itself was actually agreed upon before Sánchez’ party, the PSOE, formed its coalition government with Unidas Podemos but has since been fast tracked given the vulnerability of many families facing poverty since the recent global pandemic and subsequent economic standstill. Sánchez said that at the end of June, 75,000 households (around 225,000 people, half of whom are minors) will receive the payment. The payment will eventually be rolled out to an estimated 850,000 households. It should be noted that a "minimum vital income" is not the same as a universal basic income, which is granted without any conditions to every citizen. However, there is huge interest in the coalition government’s income scheme – Sánchez revealed that already there have been 21 million visits to the social security website for the scheme, indicating that there is a high level of interest from people in need of financial help caused by the lockdown situation in Spain. The Minimum Vital Income (IMV) will

be a means tested payment with a number of conditions for eligibility, according to the type of family or individual that will have the right to receive the benefit. The IMV amounts to €5,538 per year for a single adult. From that basis, additional factors are taken into account according to the family situation including additional family members, the number of children etc. A family of four could be paid a maximum IMV of €12,183.60. The IMV has to be applied for through the Social Security office. A helpline has been set up to offer help and information about the payment – 900 202 222, 9am to 2.30pm Monday to Friday – and applications can be made from June 15th onwards. The social security website also offers a ‘simulator’ for individuals to check if they qualify for the payment and if so, how much. During his video conference, Sánchez also mentioned mistakes made by Spanish authorities and focused on what has gone wrong over the last three months, as well as what lessons can be

learned to improve the situation in the future. He was particularly critical of some regions which had made cuts to healthcare funding in recent years. He refuted claims made that the Spanish healthcare system is in disarray. “It’s just the opposite,” he said, “Spanish healthcare is even better than we thought, but we have discovered that it wasn’t being cared for as it deserved to be. We have seen the reaction when resources are injected, but we have also seen the wounds left behind by the cuts. No economic circumstances justify the mistreatment of our health system. That makes us weaker. It is the same for science. Society will demand a country in which science and research are strategic sectors.” He also appealed to the young population of Spain to continue to observe social distancing measures in order to prevent a fresh wave of infection. “I am begging you, do it for yourselves and for everyone else,” he said, warning that “the risk is still out there,” and that the virus “could return.”

Spain in world top three for Covid19 vaccine clinical trials Spain has become one of the key nations on earth in conducting clinical trials for a Covid-19 vaccine, with the third-highest number of patients participating in an advanced stage of the research. Worldwide, a total of 556 clinical trials are taking place – where vaccines developed in laboratories and found to be successful when tested on animals, usually rats and mice, move onto the next stage and are tested on humans – with, at present, 300,099 volunteers having been administered with what is hoped will be a drug that prevents the condition. In Spain, 76 clinical trials are under way, and scientists have recruited 25,227 volunteers. This represents about 8.5 percent of the international total, and makes the country second in the world for the number of trials taking place. The USA has 97 trials already started, involving 71,710 patients; the UK has the world's highest number of patients participating, at 86,702, but only around 40 percent as many trials as Spain, with 32 overall. Figures have been released by the Spanish pharmaceutical company Farmaindustria. The USA's research is led by experts

from the Cochrane Library, which the World Health Organisation (WHO) is using as its source of statistics. And these 556 trials are not the end of the story: Another 423 are expected to start soon, their research leaders' having applied for or already obtained official approval and, in the case of the latter, now getting organised and arranging the

logistics and technicalities of their projects. They will see another 222,105 patients taking part, of whom 4,196 will be in Spain as part of 16 trials – a total of 92 trials and 29,423 patients nationwide. But now, Spain is likely to have to search harder for volunteers, probably in other continents – although that's good news, says Farmaindustria's head of new medications, Amelia Martín Uranga. “Many of the clinical trials in operation targeted patients who were in a serious,

or critical, condition – and, fortunately, that's exactly the type of patient we currently have the fewest of,” she explains. Pharmaceutical companies are now likely to find it easier to recruit volunteers in Brazil, Russia or the USA, which are still in the full grip of the pandemic, Dr Uranga says. Spain's health minister Salvador Illa highlighted the country's major rôle in developing a vaccine against the SARSCoV-2 virus, and thanked the pharmaceutical industry for their 'significant donations' of medications to help support national researchers. With the WHO having warned of a possible second outbreak in the autumn – albeit likely to be very localised – the race is on to find an effective inoculation against this highly-contagious condition so as to avoid having to put entire countries into lockdown to contain it. Minister for science in Spain, former astronaut Pedro Duque, says he does not expect a vaccine to be on the market before 2021 – although already, in less than four months, Spain, the UK and the USA, among other countries, have developed a drug ready for testing on real-live patients for a condition most of the world did not know existed until early 2020, a process that would normally have taken several years.

FIRST TIME BUYER? 5 THINGS YOU MUST KNOW Rebecca Serwotka Rebecca Serwotka - Your favourite local property expert, of Inmobiliaria Real Estate Agents in Ciudad Quesada & published author of “Moving Forward - 25 Essential Rules For Buying & Selling Real Estate Without Going Crazy.” Request your FREE copy today!Featured on Best Buy Spain - Property TV.

Buying your first home in Spain? Maybe you’re reserving it without even being Spain to see it in person. Without the correct guidance, it will feel like there’s so much to understand, from the process to the paperwork, getting a mortgage and applying for your N.I.E. number. To make it a little clearer, here are 5 things every first time home buyer in Spain, needs to know: 1. Know what your budget is. Everyone has a limit on how much they can and want to spend on their home in the sun. So figuring out your budget before you start your search, will not only save you time, but will help you narrow down which properties to look at in person or online. 2. Need a mortgage? If you need to apply for a loan, there are a few different options out there right now. Speaking to the bank in Spain is very easy to do, they do speak English so don’t worry about communicating with them. If a mortgage is not what you need, but a top up loan would be enough, the Spanish banks are offering “quick approval” loans up to €60,000. My advice is always to speak directly with the bank and let them offer you their best rate and advice. Amount you can borrow for “Non-Residents” (not residing in Spain,) is usually up to 70% of the purchase price. For “Residents” they lend up to 80%.

3. N.I.E. number. This is your Spanish tax number. Every person that is purchasing a property, must have this designated number. This means, if two people are buying a home together, both individuals must have a number each. You will need to have this number to open a Spanish bank account and/or applying for a mortgage. Tip: Sometimes it’s easier to pay for someone to apply for this number for you, instead of trying to do it yourself. 4. Use a Lawyer. In Spain you can buy a property and complete the paperwork by yourself, however, I think you’ll agree with me when I say, it is definitely not worth the risk! 5. The Notary. In Spain when signing on the dotted line to complete your purchase, you have to be present in a Notary’s office to sign your new Title Deeds. The Notary is a Government official, is completely independent and bears witness to the transaction. Tip: If travel restrictions are preventing you from being present at the Notary, you could draw up a Power Of Attorney to allow someone else to appear on your behalf. This could be done using a Notary Public in the U.K. if you’re not in Spain. Need expert guidance with your property search? Face masks here to stay, supported by fines Not only are face masks obligatory in Spain at the moment, while the state of alarm emergency measures are still in place, the government is drafting measures to ensure they remain. Part of the “new normal” will see those living in Spain social distancing and wearing masks in the coming months until the government declares the coronavirus crisis to be completely over. A draft decree for the new normal, which the government executive is currently debating with Spain’s regions, is due to be approved today (Tuesday 9th June) by the Cabinet. The decree includes the obligatory use of masks in closed public spaces where a safe distance of 2 meters cannot be guaranteed. Fines of up to €100 will be given to people who are not wearing them. The decree also leaves open the possibility of regulating their use in open air spaces. According to the document, masks will have to be used on all forms of transport, including in public vehicles with up to nine passengers, such as taxis or

private hire vehicles. In the case of ferries and other passenger vessels, masks will not be obligatory in cabins. The decree also specifies that people with any kind of respiratory disease or breathing difficulty will not have

to wear the protective equipment. The draft decree sets out the general guidelines for the use of masks but now these powers will pass to the regional governments, who will have to set out the details. This is because in the final stages of Spain’s de-escalation plan control will be handed over to the regions from Madrid. The decree also specifies other measures such as obligatory distances in the workplace, as well as the requirements for airlines and other transport companies to hold the details of all passengers for a month including where they

sat so that they can be identified in the case of a positive coronavirus case being confirmed. The decree will also require the regions to offer guarantees of hospital bed capacity and the ability to carry out PCR tests to detect coronavirus cases. “The health system will have to guarantee capacity to respond if there are rises in infections and the resulting rise in case numbers,” it reads. “To do so, it must have in place, or have access to, or have the capacity to, install between 1.5 and two intensive care beds for every 10,000 inhabitants, and between 37 and 40 beds for the seriously ill for every 10,000 inhabitants, in a maximum time frame of five days.” There are also general rules for the workplace in the decree. Companies will have to “adapt the layout of work spaces, the organisation of shifts and working conditions so that a minimum safe interpersonal distance of between 1.5 and two meters between employees can be guaranteed. When this is not possible, staff should be provided with protective equipment that is appropriate for the level of risk.”

1000 young people to be hired as "tourist assistants" on beaches The Valencian Government has announced it will hire 1000 young people as helpers on local beaches this summer. These special support staff will be operational in July and August across beaches on the Valencian coastline to inform and reinforce the security measures to be adopted by beachgoers. A thousand young people, between 18 and 30 years old, will help ensure that the security measures underway in the region are being maintained by members of the public. These 1000 young people employed by the Generalitat will work in coordination with the Local Police officers of each municipality, so that the beaches of Alicante, Valencia and Castellón are an area of quality and safety that everyone can enjoy.

The President of the Generalitat, Ximo Puig, held a video conference this week alongside employment officials to announce the move. The "tourist assistants" will provide information on the safety and protection standards that will need to be met to ensure people can enjoy beach spaces safely. Puig revealed that he will be holding a meeting with mayors of towns throughout the Valencian Community to convey the details of the initative. Puig said that the Valencian Government wants to make security “a fundamental asset of our tourism commitment”, so “we are taking firm but solid and safe steps.” To carry out the employment initiative, the Ministry of Justice, Interior and Public

Benidorm’s beaches during lockdown

Administration, requested that the government approve a Temporary Employment Plan to regulate the hiring process, which is scheduled for mid-June. During the last ten days of June, the young recruits will receive training on the security and protection measures that must be conveyed to tourists and beach users. The beach assistants will also provide information to the Ministry on the occupation of beaches; this data will then be incorporated into an informative App for users. In terms of where exactly they will be put to work, the beach assistants will be distributed provincially and their assignment to municipalities will be made according to the needs of each area, depending on how busy local beaches are.

The Neighbourhood Association of Cabo Roig and Lomas was established more than two years ago, to help to improve the conservation and maintenance of the streets, green areas, infrastructures and other services provided by the Orihuela Town Hall in Orihuela Costa. The majority of residents from the urbanisations of Aguamarina, Cabo Roig and Lomas de Cabo Roig, are represented within the association, through which they communicate their complaints and suggestions relating to rubbish collection, street cleaning, maintenance of roads, parks and gardens and other deficiencies within their community, which the association discusses with Orihuela council. One of the most important achievements of the association to date has been the organisation of a protest in March 2018, one of the biggest protests ever to be held in Orihuela Costa, to demand the construction of pedestrian pavements over the AP7 bridge in Lomas de Cabo Roig, a project that to date, that unfortunately has not been carried out by the Town Hall. During the state of alarm of COVID19, the association is making an effort to keep neighbours and the wider

community informed through social networks, updating them on the published regulations relating to the State of Alarm and their practical application to residents of Orihuela. Safety rules for passengers as flight set to resume A number of airlines have announced they will be restarting their flight schedules in a few weeks. This includes Ryanair, Jet2 and easyJet, who have introduced extensive new guidance to ensure the safety of their passengers amid coronavirus. easyJet

easyJet is set to restart some flights from 15th June, but almost half of its 1,022 routes will be reopened by the end of July, increasing to 75 per cent during August. Flights will be at a lower frequency than normal, meaning the airline will operate at around 30 percent of its normal capacity between July and September. The low-cost carrier will serve all its UK bases in the key family summer holiday months of July and August. A series of new safety measures will be introduced by the airline, including requiring passengers to wear face masks at airports and on aircraft. Other steps to boost hygiene include not selling food during flights, enhanced cleaning of planes, and disinfection wipes and hand sanitiser being provided. Passengers will be invited to sit away from people not in their party on flights with empty seats.

Ryanair

Ryanair has announced its intention to restart 40 percent of its normal flight schedule in a matter of weeks. The budget airline has said that from July it will be offering daily flights from countries all over Northern Europe including Ireland, the UK, Belgium, Holland, Germany and to the key holiday airports of Portugal, Spain, Italy, Greece and Cyprus. They've put in place new measures for passengers including: • Check in online, download your boarding pass and where possible choose Priority & 2 Cabin Bags to keep your luggage with you. • Check your temperature before travelling. It may be checked again at the airport. If you do not pass this, you will be asked to return home. • Wear a face mask/covering at all times, both in the airport and onboard your flight. • Make sure to use hand sanitiser or hand wash as you pass through the airport, and where possible maintain some distance from other passengers. • Don’t queue at boarding gates as priority passengers will be boarded first. There should be no dwelling in boarding stairwells or air bridges. • Keep your face mask/covering on at all times. Crew will also be wearing face

masks. All Ryanair aircraft will be professionally cleaned and disinfected on a daily basis which is effective for over 24 hours and they are fitted with state of the art air filtration systems which operate to hospital standards. Limited in-flight service onboard, consisting of wrapped snacks and drinks and sales will be cashless to limit physical contact. Jet2

Airline Jet2.com and subsidiary Jet2holidays will resume flights and holidays on 1st July. In contrast to other airlines, there isn't as much comprehensive advice for travellers. "The health and safety of our customers is our number one priority and we’re taking all appropriate measures," a statement on their website states. They say their aircraft are deep cleaned on a daily basis, and the same goes for their transfer coaches. When it comes to wearing face masks, a statement reads: "The health and safety of our customers and colleagues is our number one priority. We are in discussion with the relevant authorities, and we will provide an update on safety measures in due course."

Torrevieja nightlife problems Popular night spot ‘Parking’ in the town’s Casagrande Industrial Estate, which reopened in Phase 2 of the de-escalation, has had to partially close its facility leaving just one part of the multi venue facility open. The venue, located next to the water park, houses a number of bars and restaurants and employs around 100 people. The company which owns the venue itself says that there hasn’t been an official order to close but that on Saturday 23rd May, they themselves chose to close one of its four terraces following a verbal ‘recommendation’ by the Guardia Civil. The firm, which launched the leisure area after a million euro investment in summer 2019, manages four pubs and a restaurant on this plot - four premises on the ground floor and one more, with a large terrace, on the first floor. All of these operate under a single license for "party room with restaurant service, not a disco", management sources were keen to convey. The Local Police and the Guardia Civil received several complaints from neighbours about the venue in mid May once Torrevieja entered Phase 2 of the deescalation plan and some establishments were allowed to partially reopen for business. Videos were also broadcast on social media showing crowded terraces and people without preventive measures. Sources from Parking admitted that the public "returned with great enthusiasm. Especially the young people and sometimes have not respected the

rules of safety. We are professionals and the first to demand compliance. That is why we have followed the indication of the Guardia Civil, taking into account that it was a terrace with a lot of capacity.” For now the “Split” terrace is open for food and drinks while the rest of Parking remains closed. At the town hall, Councillor for Security, Federico Alarcón insisted that he has given an express order to the Local Police to monitor compliance with the regulations in this space and other leisure areas in Torrevieja. The company denies that there is a closing order or sanction and added that it has presented a project to modify the

current activity license to allow the upper terrace to be used by the restaurant, located on the ground floor. Marina Salinas Councillor Alarcón also reported that he has prepared meetings with the management of Marina Salinas to avoid a repeat of scenes there last weekend. In Marina Salinas, several cafeterias, restaurants and pubs with large terraces reopened during Phase 2. The control of access to the premises itself and then to the premises within caused crowds of people last Friday and Saturday. Most of the users did not wear masks and images and videos circulated on social media showed crowds there at the weekend

A bungled police players and chanted by crowds investigation triggered a public from London to Cape Town to Tel Aviv to Sydney. The outpouring of outrage and support reflects the power and reach of the United States, a country whose best and worst facets fascinate the world. It also reflects that deepseated racial inequalities are not just an American phenomenon. A demonstration in Paris declared “We are all George George Floyd Floyd,” but also invoked the name of Adama Traore, a 24-year- inquiry, which concluded that the old Frenchman of Malian origin London police force was who died in police custody in “institutionally racist.” 2016. We have towns. They heard echoes of their always meant something.”

More than 160 people in Britain have died while in police custody in the past decade, and figures show that black people are twice as likely as white people to die under such circumstances. Floyd’s death is another shocking turn for a technologyfuelled world unsettled by disease, coronavirus lockdowns and massive unemployment. The speed of social media helped Floyd’s final moments in Minneapolis spread around the world, and amplified the shock, anguish and anger they evoked. Floyd’s death also dropped a spark into cities already smouldering from the coronavirus pandemic. In many countries, lockdowns imposed to slow the spread of the virus confined young people indoors for weeks. Their pent-up energy has been released into the streets as diverse, youthful crowds protest Floyd's treatment, often in defiance of bans on mass gatherings. In many places, protesters have tried to practice social distancing, but the attempts often fell apart in the heat of the moment. Some demonstrators wore face masks to guard against the virus — a practical health measure made poignant by the addition of Floyd’s dying words, “I can’t breathe,” written across the front.

Costa Blanca Car Detailing the five star treatment for your car Back in 2011, car enthusiast Bill MacKay found himself the happy new owner of a beautiful Jaguar XJ. He lavished the car with care and attention, enhancing, correcting and protecting its paintwork. Eventually, the car’s immaculate condition drew so many comments and questions, that Bill realised there was an opportunity here – other car owners wanted his help to make their cars shine just like his beloved Jaguar. Bill said, “Cars and car care is something I feel very passionate about. We get over 300 days of sunshine here on the Costa Blanca which is wonderful for the spirit, but the downside is that while we can protect ourselves from the sun’s harmful rays by using sunscreen, our cars cannot. I am sure you will have seen many vehicles with serious paint damage on the roads here in Spain. This is something you NEVER see in the UK and yet there are hundreds of Detailers there, but only a handful in Spain.” Bill also explained that as well as the sun, we ourselves inadvertently cause damage to our cars’ paintwork by using the wrong products or equipment. He explained, “Apart from the sun, the other major source of damage to our vehicles are the

products we normally use to clean them. The worst examples of this are a sponge and a chamois, which inflict scratches into our paintwork by dragging dust and dirt across it as we clean. These scratches, usually referred to as Swirl Marks, hinder the sun’s reflection by reducing gloss, and therefore helping it attack our paintwork.” Many of us opt for the easy way out and put the car through a commercial ‘brush wash’ a few times per month to keep the dirt and dust at bay. Bill says that this is by far the worst thing we can do to our car’s paintwork. He told us, “By far the most damage to our vehicles is caused by commercial car washes and even if you use the power wash systems, they fade the paint with very cheap products. One of Bill’s most popular products is a ceramic coating. A ceramic coating is a newer technology that creates a semipermanent coating. It is very thin and only a small amount is needed. Most ceramic coatings will last from between one and three years, depending on maintenance and weather conditions. Ceramic coatings offer the best levels of protection, especially here in Spain. They also provide the ultimate level of shine for your car. Not only do they protect against the sun’s UV rays but their glass like feel also makes it difficult for contaminates to stick to the vehicle, making cleaning much quicker. different languages The Mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, has launched a campaign focused on awareness and prevention of gender violence entitled “You are not alone. You can decide.” The initiative is being co-ordinated by the Department of Equality and the Municipal Service for Gender Violence with the collaboration of the Vega Baja Acoge Association. The Mayor explained: “This campaign is the result of the commitment to the Municipal Ordinance on Equality, as well as the implementation of actions that comply with both the Citizenship Equality Plan and the Subsidy of the State Pact against gender violence.” The campaign aims to reach all citizens directly, but specifically the immigrant population, that is why leaflets has been prepared in five languages (Spanish, French, English, Arabic and Russian) that contain general information on identifying if you are a victim of the crime of gender violence. In addition, these brochures include important information on how to act in that case, where to go, where to request guidance and who to contact if you want to file a complaint. "The brochures are structured in three important parts: alert, danger and what to do. The

Spanish and immigrant populations can also find details on the telephone helplines for victims of gender violence," said the presidents of Vega Baja Welcomes. A total of 10,000 copies have been published, 2,000 being produced in each of the five languages mentioned above. These will be distributed in all areas of the local administration, judicial entities and through security forces and bodies, as well as among all the associations and collaborating entities in the prevention and intervention against gender violence. The Vega Baja organisation thanked the Department of Equality for their support in

carrying out this campaign jointly and also stressed that "the leaflets that we are going to deliver are small, manageable and contain all the information in an exact way in order to facilitate their reading in the fastest and most understandable way.” Finally, the Mayor said: “If we detect a situation of gender violence we must not let our guard down, we must form a wide network to prevent and intervene in this type of situation. I want to remind the entire population of the importance of their collaboration, support and awareness of the entities that work to eradicate this type of situation using tools such as education.”

Callosa offers 9000m2 to save a local factory from closure

Man kills mother and seriously injures father

Callosa town hall says it has offered the use of 9,000 m2 of industrial land to a factory with 130 employees to avoid its closure. Reports indicated that a judgment handed down by the Valencian High Court (the TSJCV) requires the company to be closed as it lacks the appropriate activity license as it is located on residential land. The company however, says that these reports are false. The government team of Callosa de Segura (PP and Cs) held an extraordinary plenary session to seek approval for a proposal to offer 9000 m2 of industrial land so that the factory can move its operations to the municipal industrial estate. The town hall says it is trying to prevent the company, which has been in operation since 1960 and employs around 130 workers, from having to shut down. The government team considers it in the general interest to keep jobs in the area, and a priority for companies "not to move to other territories, so that the unemployment rate does not increase above the current rates." The Councillor of Urbanism, Rocío Cuadrado, said that "the loss of such an important company for Callosa would be a disgrace, we are not sure that the rest of our factories can absorb such a high number of jobs." The City Council wants to formalize

A man is accused of murdering his mother and inflicting serious injuries on his father in the town of San Vicente, north of Alicante. A 30-year-old man was arrested on Friday morning in Alicante, accused of murdering his mother on Thursday night in San Vicente del Raspeig. He is also accused of trying to kill his father, whom he seriously injured with a stab wound to the neck, according to sources close to the case. The incident occurred before midnight on Thursday at the victims’ home. The man’s mother, 67 year old Maripé did not survive her injuries and died at the scene. The father, Melchor, sustained a stab wound to the neck and was treated at the scene by medical personnel and later evacuated to Alicante General Hospital, where he is in a very serious condition. The Guardia Civil of San Vicente initially undertook the investigation into the incident but the case has been taken over by investigators from the Homicide Group of the Alicante Command.

a ‘swap’ agreement. The current factory plot would pass to the Town Hall, and an alternative 9000 square metre plot in the industrial estate would be used by the factory. The current General Plan, approved in 2002, classifies the land on which the factory is located as residential. In Callosa, there are some businesses built in the 50s, 60s and 70s that, after the approval of the General Plan, have remained operating on what is technically urban land. However, the company at the heart of the issue has revealed that it has had no more than a verbal agreement with the town hall and in a statement said that a proposal "of this substance must be made with rigorous degree of detail, not only for Cabos y Redes but for its more than one hundred workers.” The

company also claimed that it believes that the Generalitat would authorize a modification of the General Plan to transform the current land from urban to industrial and accuses the town hall of spreading "false" information. The company categorically denied the claims of the town hall and says that “no one has ordered the closure of the production plant”, hinting that the town hall wants to be seen to be resolving a conflict. The company said in a statement that it has always been prepared to collaborate with the town hall “in everything that we have been asked to do to reduce acoustic impacts”... “Despite the City Council's attitude, we reiterate the commitment to creating wealth and generating of employment that it has with the municipality of Callosa de Segura.”

After the attack took place and the alarm was raised, the alleged murderer fled the scene in a car. Guardia Civil were able to put a trace on the vehicle that he used to flee. After midnight, the car was located by the National Police and the suspect was arrested. Although he was initially transferred to the offices of the Provincial Police Station, he was later handed over to the Guardia Civil. The family is well known and respected in San Vicente. All are closely linked to local fiestas and the father is the founder of one of the troupes in the Moors and Christians festival. The family is also involved in the town’s musical groups. Social services are not aware of any previous ill-treatment or of any previous problem that triggered the incident since none of the family members, neither the parents nor the child, are users of social services. The town hall of San Vicente held a minute’s silence on Friday as a mark of respect to the murdered woman and on Saturday an official day of mourning was observed in the town with flags at half-mast.

How to Be Greedy When Others Are Fearful "We simply attempt to be fearful when others are greedy and to be greedy only when others are fearful." This quote from the Oracle of Omaha (Warren Buffett) is repeated often, or at least part of it is. But saying something is a lot easier than doing it. As stock markets crash around the world, fear is widespread and contagious. However, there are three steps you can take to make the most of the opportunity to make your money work harder for you. 1. See the market crash for what it is – an opportunity Now is the time to see things for what they really are. Yes, the markets are dropping, but for

investors with cash, this is the time to make your move. You may be tempted to hoard cash, but that is the fearful way.

thinking long term can even mean looking at stocks that have benefited from the COVID-19 scare in a different way.

2. Review your current investments Many people think, my investments have worked in the past and now is not the time to change anything. Nothing could be further from the truth. What looked good last year, may well have taken a bigger hit and now is the time to look at different funds.

If this sounds scary, then help is at hand, but why should you choose Seagate to advise you? All our advisers were trained at Lloyds Bank in the UK. We pride ourselves on putting our clients first. We have a fully staffed office in Benijofar. Unlike other advisers on the Costas we believe in regular six monthly reviews with our clients to ensure that their pension or investment is on track.

3. Think long term Whatever else you do, think long term. Buffett was exactly right when he said, "If you aren't willing to own a stock for 10 years, don't even think about owning it for 10 minutes." By the way,

Over half of households 'optimistic' about financial future postpandemic Even with record numbers of temporary unemployment and forecasts of economies shrinking in practically every country in the world, the majority of Spanish households are fairly unworried about the financial future – they believe that as long as funding is there to help those affected survive until they can get back to work, customers and businesses will make up for lost time with relatively little harm done.

believe their finances will get worse over the next year.

Marketing consultant firm Kantar carried out surveys and interviews, and its manager for consumer affairs, Edurne Uranga, says 54.7 percent of households in Spain believe the economy will 'go well' over the next 12 months, despite the pandemic.

Customer services office manager Joan Riera said optimism or pessimism about the national economy and their personal finances was not the end of the story: The health situation would also guide consumers in their spending decisions.

This, says Sra Uranga, is 'good news' for the high street, since this level of optimism will translate to people having the confidence to spend on nonessentials without the constant fear of what may be around the corner. Of course, this leaves 45.3 percent who are pessimistic – but of the total interviewed, 17 percent said that although they were currently in a bad place financially and struggling to cope, they expected their circumstances to improve over the next year. Another 10.3 percent were in the opposite situation: They do not have any real money worries at the moment, but

The gloomiest of all were the 18.1 percent of households who were barely making ends meet and did not believe things would get any better for them within a year – although it is not clear how many were already in this situation, short-term or long-term, before the Covid-19 crisis.

In this case, though, pessimism translated to high consumer spending – those who were most concerned about their health seemed to indulge more on products that gave pleasure rather than mere staples, and were also more likely to buy organic produce and healthy foodstuffs in a bid to protect themselves more.

distancing,” he says. “For this reason, small, local shops could find themselves at a disadvantage in the future, although internet shopping has been given a great opportunity through the pandemic and is likely to double its sales in 2020.” Local shops may not face quite the drawbacks García believes, though: During lockdown and now in the 'scaling down' process in which 70 percent of Spain is set to be on 'Phase 2', the penultimate stage, by Monday, independent boutiques, family-run retail establishments and the high street in general has shown itself to be resilient and adaptable. Card payments for even the smallest amount are now more the norm, and town-wide campaigns are gradually being launched to attract customers again.

Life post-Coronavirus could change the way supermarkets and hypermarkets work in future, says head of Iberia Retail at Kantar, Florencio García.

One example is in the village of Pego (northern Alicante province) – retailers have been inviting customers to complete a questionnaire, to find out what they want and need, and everyone who does so gets a free 'Covid-19 kit' worth €25 containing masks, gloves, hand-sanitiser and a cotton reusable shopping bag.

“Rather than being a coup de grace, it could end up being more of a bombshell effect – for example, creating large physical spaces to ensure social

Response has been so overwhelming that within two days, all 500 free 'Covid19 packs' were snapped up, forcing shopkeepers to order in another batch.

GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP While the new normal is that investors are no longer shocked by the weakness of global economic data, trauma fatigue makes them acclimatised to their inevitable appearance. However, a glimmer of hope amongst the dire data that continued to roll out as we move into June, and for many the fourth month of lockdown, is most welcome. The UK manufacturing PMI was slightly above the Eurozone median at 40.7, with the services sector PMI generally also better than expected. The UK’s was only a point or so ahead of forecast and represented a continuation of the “severe downturn in services sector activity.” UK construction’s crash has only partially eased according to the most recent PMI, rising to 28.9 from April’s shocking 8.2. It’s still the third worst reading in the survey’s entire 23year history though. Tuesday’s Bank of England Money and Credit report showed serious retrenchment in household finances as borrowers repaid a record £7.4 billion in April. Mortgage approvals plunged 72% to 15.8k. Here also, the optimists and pessimists put different slants on the situation. One side sees record savings as “fuelling hopes that consumer spending will rebound”. The other believes “economic fears could reduce spending”. Brexit negotiations are back on the table as well, kicking off the fourth round of post-Brexit trade talks this week, so all eyes will be on those conversations. A charitable observer would say that investors, especially equity investors are taking the long view, believing that the UK will strike a cushy trade deal with Europe, as well as the current harsh cycle of pandemic induced economic contraction will come to an end as restrictions are relaxed, and the world gets back to work. Demand and supply will recover, civil unrest in the US will fade away, and China will rethink its clampdown on Hong Kong. Those, evidently in the minority, who think otherwise believe that US racial tensions, the Sino-US power struggle, social distancing and a potential no-deal Brexit are not merely shortterm. None of them have a quick easy solution and to go all in at this juncture requires a serious suspension of disbelief. EUR Still, viewing data through rose tinted glasses

continued, with European ecostats deemed adequate, in that they avoided doing any damage to the euro. The services sector purchasing managers’ indices, whilst still deep in the recession zone, were all better than forecast and the Euroland composite at 31.9 was up by more than 18 points – 135% - from its low. The European PMI’s ranged from Germany’s two month high of 36.6, to Italy’s 45.5, a three month high. For Euroland as a whole the PMI reading was 39.4, with Markit, the compiler of the survey, describing the situation as “a noticeable easing in the recent downturn”, thereby damning it with faint praise. Manufacturing PMI’s saw Sweden with a three-point rise to 39.2 and Spain was seven and half points higher at 39.3. Investors remain fairly upbeat about the global picture, despite Italy’s quarterly GDP contraction of 5.4%, looking ahead at the steady flow of cheap money expected from central banks and not at the myriad arguments against buying risky assets, such as recession, debt and meagre profits. As she waited for the rest of Europe to sign up for the EC’s €750 billion “Repair and prepare” support proposal for Covid-19-hit countries, Chancellor Angela Merkel busied herself with domestic matters. She unveiled €130 billion of stimulus measures to reboot the German economy. The package is 30% bigger than expected and includes a cut in VAT from 19% to 16% (worth $20bn), a €300 per capita child subsidy (€4.3bn), €25bn of bridge financing for SMEs and €5.9bn aid for local authorities. Its announcement caused scarcely a ripple and the euro was unchanged on the day against the US dollar and Swiss franc. The European Central Bank extended its Covid-19 emergency stimulus by €600bn as President Christine Lagarde warned of an unprecedented 8.7% GDP slump in 2020. The increase in size of the emergency bond purchases means 1.35 trillion euros in emergency measures and that the ECB will reinvest bonds maturing in its pandemic emergency scheme until at least the end of 2022. The euro was bolstered by the aid programme, but there is the risk that too much too soon could encourage EU governments to sit back and let the ECB do their work for them. Thus, it is a careful balancing act of stimulation and encouraging individual consensus.

Crocodile on the loose

The Local Police and the Nature Protection Service of the Guardia Civil (SEPRONA) are believed to be searching for a crocodile sighted in Simancas, Valladolid. At around midday on Sunday, the Simancas Local Police were alerted that the massive reptile was spotted by members of the public on Saturday and again on Sunday. The sighting was confirmed by a Policia Local officer who confirmed to the press that he had indeed seen the croc. Reports indicate that it is a crocodile of approximately a meter and a half in length, which now a dozen troops are trying to locate and capture. Authorities have cordoned off several areas to prevent people from accessing the area where the animal has been sighted - at the confluence of the Pisuerga river with the river Duero, which is approximately twenty kilometres from

Valladolid. One of the most probable theories is that the crocodile arrived in the area after being abandoned by someone. It is not yet clear what type of crocodile the animal is but reports indicate it might be a freshwater crocodile. A shy animal, the freshwater crocodile is not dangerous to humans, preferring to stay well away. If cornered or harassed, however, they will retaliate fiercely, and their sharp teeth can inflict serious injuries. Saltwater crocodiles are known to be more aggressive. Concerned residents living in the area had asked the burning question – Can a human outrun a crocodile? The short answer is yes. “Most crocodiles can achieve 12–14kph for short periods,” says crocodile specialist Adam Britton, “which is slower than a fit human can run. So if you're in reasonable shape, you could definitely outrun a croc.”

Spain has not reached herd immunity The second part of a government study into Spain’s coronavirus pandemic has revealed that just 5.2 percent of the general population are now immune against the virus. The Instituto de Salud Carlos III public health centre announced the results after testing 64,564 people between 18th May and 1st June. The first part of the study, which began on 27th April, fund that just 5 percent of the population carried specific antibodies that fight against the coronavirus as part of the body’s immune system. The institute’s director, Raquel Yotti, said the low figures eant Spain has not yet achieved ‘herd immunity’ against coronavirus. The type of study that researches immunity in a population is called seroprevalence, and is higher than Spain’s official confirmed cases – PCR-confirmed

patients currently make up 0.01 percent of the population. Results also confirmed that provinces in central Spain have been the worst-hit during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, Madrid, Segovia, Guadalajara and Albacete showed seroprevalence levels twice as high as the national average of 5.2 percent, whilst Cuenca and Soria levels were triple the coverage. In addition, Castilla y Leon, Castilla-La Mancha, Barcelona, Navarra, Teruel and Alava had seroprevalence levels at between 5-10 percent. At the other end of the scale Girona, Lleida, Zaragoza, Huesca, Alicante, Caceres, Malaga, Granada, Jaen, Castellon and Alicante showed seroprevalence levels between 3 percent and 5 percent, whilst other regions such as Huelva and Asturias didn’t reach 2 percent.

Endangered white lion born in Spain for first time The first-ever white lion outside the wild has been born in Spain, in the MundoPark nature reserve in Guillena (Sevilla province). And the public can go and visit him in person after 12th June, when the park reopens. According to MundoPark's social media channels, the cub is the son of Alba and Can, two white lions brought over from Thailand four years ago. Staff have not been able to get close enough to Alba yet to see if the baby has any brothers or sisters, since they saw her cub appear and have not been able to ascertain whether she was about to give

birth to more in the same litter, a process which could take several hours or even days. This 'distancing' is in keeping with the environment in which animals at MundoPark live – in open areas designed to be as similar as possible to their natural habitats. The white lion cub is the second birth of an endangered species in the same week: The previous Saturday, MundoPark announced an orix cimitarra had been born, a type of antelope which is now extinct in the wild and only ever found nowadays in captivity.

Spain to sue over virus flight chaos The Spanish government has pledged to sue 17 airlines for failing to inform travellers about their right to a refund for flights cancelled during the pandemic. However, a day after the consumer affairs ministry said it would take legal action, Spanish carrier Iberia hit back. Under European law, when a flight is cancelled, passengers must be offered an alternative flight or a refund. The refund may be voucher, but only if the customer consents, the European Commission clarified last month. "Shortcomings in the information provided on customers' rights following the cancellation of flights," led to the legal action, the ministry said. "The misleading omission of information by airlines in offering vouchers [as the only option] constitutes unfair trading involving a clear lack of consent as well as a breach of the law," a statement said. Iberia said it was "bewildered" by the allegations and denounced the "very damaging effects" of such a move on both its reputation and "financial ability to overcome the current paralysis". Companies to be named in the lawsuit are: Air Europa, Air France, Binter Canarias, EasyJet, Eurowings, Iberia (Iberia Express and Air Nostrum), Jet 2, KLM, Latam Airlines, Lufthansa, Ryanair, Scandinavian Airlines (SAS), Transavia, Thomson Airways (TUI), United Airlines, Volotea and Wizzair. "Refunds are always possible. This

option has been clearly offered to our customers," Germany's Lufthansa told newsagency AFP. "But it must be understood that refunds are not being paid out within the normal timeframe," it said. The refund issue has become a political hot potato in the European Union. At the end of April, 12 European states including France - but not Spain - asked the bloc to suspend the law requiring airlines to offer full refunds for flights cancelled due to the crisis. But the Commission said airlines must offer refunds and cannot force passengers to accept vouchers, while suggesting they incentivize vouchers as

a way to support the hard-hit tourism sector. French consumer rights group UFCQue Choisir also said in May it would file a legal complaint against 20 airlines for failing to reimburse customers for cancelled flights. With the near freezing of international traffic, airlines face an unprecedented financial crisis. Industry body Airlines for Europe (A4E) says 9.2 billion euros ($10.3 billion) had been lost in unused tickets by the end of May. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) gave a similar estimate, saying unused tickets amounted to some $10 billion in Europe and $35 billion globally.

Keeping the coast safe and clean The Councillor for Street Cleaning, Dámaso Aparicio, has discussed the hiring of 39 new workers to perform cleaning and disinfection services in Orihuela Costa. He recently visited the coast to supervise the work carried out and receive the 14 people who have joined the cleaning service this week. The brigade will carry out disinfection work in areas where people flow and will be in charge of conditioning and sanitising the Orihuela Costa area. As Councillor Aparicio explained: "We are very happy to welcome an initial 14 new workers who are joining this Department and who have been assigned to the Oriolan coast to reinforce the cleaning and disinfection work, and more especially now during the current pandemic situation due to Covid19.” On 15th June the incorporation of another 25 workers is planned for the beach reinforcement service. These workers will carry out cleaning tasks, emptying bins, manual maintenance of beaches and conditioning of the periphery environment.

Councillor Dámasco Aparico

In addition, the Department of Human Resources has requested the hiring of 55 workers and 29 drivers for the entire municipal term. "We are waiting for the necessary procedures to be completed and to have the requested reinforcement in a short period of time in anticipation of being able to provide the necessary service

throughout the coastal area," said the councillor. In addition, the councillor has assured that "thanks to the new hirings that we are making and the fact that we are exclusively targeting the Orihuela Costa area, our beaches will once again be a benchmark throughout the coastline during the next summer season."

Crisis point at reach out The current crisis has greatly damaged the unique facility that Reach Out offers to the homeless and families living in poverty in Torrevieja. Charity President David Young told the Costa Blanca People, “The Hacienda has unfortunately seized any debts we had to them, and rather than defer the payments, as recommended by the Government, decided to strike at our jugular and take lump sums from our ever depleting bank account. No income for three months means we are near to bankruptcy.” Davy continued, “We have stocks of food provided by generous donors, our own funds and the EU Foodbank, and estimate we have enough stock to provide for our 45 families until late September.” “What we now need is hard CASH. Monetary donations to help pay our Social Workers wages, Insurances, Rent, Electricity, security and water bills. Our second, smaller, charity shop has not been re-opened due to Volunteer fears, they are all

volunteers are always required and appreciated, and that the smaller shop, affectionately referred to as ‘Shop 2’ by the team, desperately needs volunteers to be able to reopen.

of a vulnerable group and we can understand their concerns. Our main charity shop has re-opened, but due to restrictions our income is still not what we were earning prior to Lockdown, and will take some time to emerge from the crisis. Our furniture department has not been able to thrive due to lack of drivers, again due to the Volunteers being in a vulnerable group.” Davy said, “We would appreciate funding from businesses who would be willing to offer an Annual Tax Deductable bursary, or a monthly sum which again can be tax deductable. Every little helps!” Davy

Stress relieving foods if you’re feeling anxious When it comes to combating stress levels, what you eat may actually help relieve your tension. Some foods may help stabilize blood sugar or, better yet, your emotional response. Green leafy vegetables It's tempting to reach for a cheeseburger when stressed, but go green at lunch instead. Green leafy vegetables like spinach contain folate, which produces dopamine, a pleasure-inducing brain chemical, helping you keep calm. A study of 2,800 middle-age and elderly people found that those who consumed the most folate had a lower risk of depression symptoms than those who took in the least. Another study from the University of Otago in New Zealand discovered that college students tended to feel calmer, happier, and more energetic on days they ate more fruits and veggies. It can be hard to tell which came first - upbeat thoughts or healthy eating—but the researchers found that healthy eating seemed to predict a positive mood the next day. Turkey breast You've probably heard that the tryptophan in turkey is to blame for that food coma on Thanksgiving. This amino acid helps produce serotonin, the chemical that regulates hunger and feelings of happiness and well-being. On its own, tryptophan may have a calming effect. In a 2006 study published in the Journal of Psychiatry Neuroscience, men and women who were argumentative (based on personality tests) took either tryptophan supplements or a placebo for 15 days. Those who took tryptophan were perceived as more agreeable by their study partners at the end of the two weeks compared with when they didn't take it. Other foods high in tryptophan include nuts, seeds, tofu, fish, lentils, oats, beans, and eggs.

Oats If you're already a carb lover, it's likely that nothing can come between you and a doughnut when stress hits. First rule of thumb: Don't completely deny the craving. According to research from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, carbohydrates can help the brain make serotonin, the same brain chemical that is regulated by certain antidepressants. But instead of reaching for that sugary bear claw, go for complex carbs. Stress can cause your blood sugar to rise, so a complex carb like oatmeal won't contribute to your already potential spike in blood glucose. Yogurt As bizarre as it may sound, the bacteria in your gut might be contributing to stress. Research has shown that the brain and gut communicate via body chemicals, which is why stress can inflame gastrointestinal symptoms. And a study among 36 healthy women revealed that consuming probiotics in yogurt reduced brain activity in areas that handle emotion, including stress. This study was small, so more research is needed to confirm the results - but considering that yogurt is full of calcium and protein in addition to probiotics, you really can't go wrong by adding more of it to your diet. Salmon Stress can ratchet up levels of anxiety hormones, such as adrenaline and cortisol. The omega-3 fatty acids in salmon have anti-inflammatory properties that may help counteract the negative effects of stress hormones. In a study funded by the National Institutes of Health, Oregon State University medical students who took omega-3 supplements had a 20 percent reduction in anxiety compared to the group given placebo pills.

Blueberries When you're stressed, there's a battle being fought inside you. The antioxidants and phytonutrients found in berries fight in your defence, helping improve your body's response to stress. Research has also shown that blueberry eaters experience a boost in natural killer cells, "a type of white blood cell that plays a vital role in immunity, critical for countering stress. Dark chocolate A regular healthy indulgence (just a bite, not a whole bar!) of dark chocolate might have the power to regulate your stress levels. Research has shown that it can reduce your stress hormones, including cortisol. Also, the antioxidants in cocoa trigger the walls of your blood vessels to relax, lowering blood pressure and improving circulation. Finally, dark chocolate contains unique natural substances that create a sense of euphoria similar to the feeling of being in love. Go for varieties that contain at least 70 percent cocoa. Cashews One ounce of the buttery nut packs 11 percent of the daily recommended value of zinc, an essential mineral that may help reduce anxiety. When researchers gave zinc supplements to people who were diagnosed with both anxiety symptoms (irritability, lack of ability to concentrate) and deficient zinc levels over a course of eight weeks, the patients saw a 31 percent decrease in anxiety, according to Nutrition and Metabolic Insights. This is likely because zinc affects the levels of a nerve chemical that influences mood. If you're already getting enough zinc, it may not help your mood to chow down on cashews (or other zinc-rich foods like oysters, beef, chicken, and yogurt). But cashews are also rich in omega-3s and protein, so they're a smart snack no matter what.

Sanitise Vs disinfect The two major ways to protect yourself during the COVID-19 pandemic washing your hands regularly (or sanitising them when you're not near soap and water) and cleaning commonly-touched surfaces - seem pretty self-explanatory. That is, until you're trying to decide which types of products to use. While sanitisers and disinfectants are commonly referred to interchangeably, the two types of products are actually different, and should be used in different situations. Here's what you need to know about sanitisers and disinfectants including when, where, and how to use them. What's the difference between sanitizers and disinfectants? Cleaning, sanitising, and disinfecting all have different definitions: • Cleaning removes germs, dirt, and other impurities from surfaces, but doesn't necessarily kill them. • Sanitising lowers the number of germs on surfaces or objects - either by killing them or removing them - to a safe level, according to public health standards or requirements. • Disinfecting kills germs on surfaces or objects. In short it's helpful to think of the relationship between cleaning, sanitising, and disinfecting as a spectrum, with cleaning at one end and

disinfecting at the other. Disinfecting kills the majority of viruses and bacteria, whilst sanitising doesn’t kill everything. If you want to get really technical, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines sanitisers as chemical products that can kill at least 99.9 percent of germs on hard surfaces (that percentage should go up to 99.99 percent of germs on surfaces used for food service). Disinfectants are, again, stronger, killing 99.999 percent of germs on hard, nonporous surfaces or objects. The difference really boils down to the fact that sanitising solutions aren’t as strong as disinfecting solutions. But some products can be both sanitisers and disinfectants. Case in point is concentrated bleach: It can be a disinfectant, but if it’s very diluted, it might be a sanitiser (meaning, again, that it kills less bacteria and viruses). So, when should you sanitise and when should you disinfect? There are certain procedures for cleaning groceries, surfaces in your home such as doorknobs, and your hands, and it’s crucial to get them right. Let’s start with groceries: You don’t need to wipe them down with Clorox wipes (or any other disinfectants) or a sanitizer. All you have to do is clean them (using water, but no soap) when you bring them in your home. On the opposite end of the spectrum, you want to save disinfectants for bigger messes or highly-touched areas of your

home, like doorknobs, toilet handles, and even sinks. Countertops, however, is where things get tricky - if you're using any surfaces for food preparation, it's best to sanitise those, so any chemical residue isn't as powerful and potentially harmful. As for your own hands, it may be tempting to wipe them off with a disinfecting wipe once you use it on other surfaces, but you really shouldn’t: That can be very dangerous for your skin as experts have seen adverse effects of people using disinfectants on their own bodies. Ultimately, you can go by this simple rule: Wipe off surfaces, [but] wash your hands. That's because "good” bacteria live on your skin, so when you apply something that kills basically all the bacteria on your hands, you’re killing off some that are actually helpful and natural. There’s a reason we don’t apply something that kills every organism on the skin (hence hand sanitiser, which should contain 60 percent alcohol). However, it's important to remember that hand sanitiser is fine if you’re out in public, but it’s always better to wash hands with soap and water (for at least 20 seconds) if that’s an option. While COVID-19 has definitely triggered a huge uptick in people buying and using more sanitising and disinfecting products, this is not at all a bad thing: it's good practice for everybody right now if they are looking to keep their home safe. Just remember to use them correctly and responsibly.

Birds Eye launches first ever vegan sausage roll Birds Eye has added new meatfree sausage rolls to its Green Cuisine collection. To mark National Sausage Roll Day Friday, 5th June, Birds Eye Green Cuisine has unveiled its first fully vegan, meat-free sausage roll, available now in the frozen aisle of stores nationwide. The new vegan sausage rolls are filled with a seasoned pea protein filling encased in a flaky puff pastry, the new recipe has been developed to replicate the much-loved succulent taste and

texture of traditional Birds Eye Homebake frozen sausage rolls. Senior Brand Manager at Birds Eye, Anne-Marie Gayer, said: "We know that sausage rolls are one of the nation’s favourites snacks, so we wanted to create a meat-free version that perfectly replicates the taste and texture of highstreet outlets, but with the convenience of being able to cook at home straight from the freezer. "As the pastry is only cooked

once, it results in a lighter and flakier pastry compared to just warming through a chilled sausage roll. "We’ve also ensured that our recipe has the perfect ratio of seasoned vegan sausage to flaky pastry. We can’t to hear what people think." Cooked straight from the freezer in just 15-20 minutes, Birds Eye Green Cuisine Meat-Free Sausage Rolls are available in stores nationwide now.

Terrace tax suspended There is good news for local bars and restaurants as the terrace tax is suspended to help the hospitality sector recover during the coronavirus de-escalation period on Spain’s Costa Blanca. Orihuela City Council has decided that bars, cafes and restaurants are now exempt from paying the additional tax for using pavements to enable them to spread out tables and adhere to social distancing measures to ensure customer safety. The Councillor for Finance, Rafael Almagro announced the decision after the local

government’s recent meeting, held on line.

The Councillor said: “This ruling will help the businesses of Orihuela recover during the crisis, they will be exempt from paying this fee until the end of the year.” Of course, they will be some businesses that have already paid that specific tax for this year and in reference to those owners Councillor Almagro added: “They may request a refund of the amount paid between 14th March and entry into Phase 1 on 11th May.”

The low down on wine... With the nation spending so much time at home, sales of wine are soaring. Many people are building up a nice selection of different wines to choose from, but have been left wondering what's the best way to store their wine to get optimum flavour and a longerlasting tipple. Thankfully, wine experts are on-hand to tell give us the low down. Whether you’re looking to buy wines to save for a special occasion or are just keen to make your favourite bottles last that bit longer, this is what to look out for while browsing the wine aisle. The general rule of thumb is that anything that has some good tannin structure and a decent level of acidity can age well within the bottle as, over time, the tannins will soften, and the fruit becomes more mellow. Anything around the 10e mark should easily be able to age for a year. Stick to red, whites and sparkling wines like Champagne. Where in the house is the best place to keep my wine bottles? The most important thing for wine is to think of them as sleeping until you want to open them. They like to be somewhere that is a stable, kept in a cool temperature, away from the light, vibrations, movement and temperature fluctuations. Storage is often in short supply in most people's houses so it is important to be practical. Garages are a great place to store wines, if not, under the stairs as long as you don’t thunder up and down them. However, if the wine doesn’t tend

to hang around for too long, then a small wine rack placed in the coolest part of your home is all that is really required. What wines should I store in the fridge and out of it? Is it true that reds don’t belong in the fridge? Wine shouldn’t be stored in the fridge per se – instead, the fridge should be utilised for chilling prior to drinking. Fizz should always be served fairly well chilled, over time as it warms up in the glass, the aromas of the sparkling wine will change and open up in a similar way to whites. Where people commonly go wrong is the serving temperature of white and red wines. White wines shouldn’t be served straight out of the fridge. If they are too cold it can close down the aroma or nose of the wine. Whereas reds are often served a bit too warm. They can benefit from being popped into the fridge just before serving – an easy way to enhance their vibrancy and drinkability. Top tip: Remember the 20/20 rule – take white wines out 20 minutes before serving and pop red wines in the fridge 20 minutes before serving. What wines should I store upright, and which ones are okay to be laid down flat on their side? The general rule is that anything under a natural cork needs to be stored on its side to stop the cork drying out – the contact of the wine with the cork keeps it moist. Screw caps and sparkling wines can be stored standing up. Once I’ve opened a bottle, how long will it retain its intended aromas and

flavours? What can I do to keep them as long as possible? Once a wine has been opened and you have some left over the best thing to do for both red and white wines is to pop them in the fridge as this will keep them fresher for longer. Some wines you will find improve with having been opened whilst others tend to lose fruit freshness. It’s often a matter of trial and error, as well as personal preference, but generally wines that are lighter and with higher acidity tend to stay fresh for longer. Wines such as Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling for example, can easily last a good few days after opening and can even make a week. Rounder, fuller wines would want to be drunk within a couple of days. Reds are trickier as drinkability after opening tends to be extremely varied, the acidity in the wine will play a key role so pop in the fridge and try to enjoy the rest of it within two to three days. My wine has been open for a couple of days, how do you know when a wine has gone bad? Wines don't go bad so much as they fade and don't taste as good as they did on opening. The liquid will only really go bad if kept open for quite a long time; after a good couple of weeks the wine will slowly turn into vinegar and it will taste as such, too. How long does sparkling last once it’s opened and what’s the best way to store it once the cork has been popped? The higher the atmospheric pressure in the wine, the longer the bubbles can last for – this means that Champagne

and other traditional method sparkling wines (Cava) will stay fizzier for longer than Prosecco and tank method sparklers. Champagne can last probably two days whilst I would drink Prosecco the following night. Store the bottle standing up and use a sparkling wine closure, not a teaspoon as that old trick doesn't work. If you’ve opened a wine and it’s not quite to your taste, what else can you do with it? In the event that you’ve popped open a bottle that’s not for you, there are a couple of routes you can go down before pouring it down the sink. You can use both red and white wines to add depth and flavour to a variety of dishes including soups, stews and even sauces. Alternatively, you can make spritzers or even a jug or two of some crowd-pleasing sangria – white or red. If it’s a bottle that has already been opened, just be sure to taste it to make sure it hasn’t oxidised and got that vinegary twang before you use.

Should I, or shouldn't I I am single and I have been attracted to my best friend’s husband since I laid eyes on him. I had never taken things any further but I was pretty sure he felt the same way. I got a phone call from him the other day saying he would like to meet up. I was so excited at the thought of us meeting in secret that I went along, and after being cooped up all these weeks it was bliss being able to talk about our true feelings. He said living in lockdown with his wife and kids really opened his eyes and he could no longer stand his wife who just nagged him the whole time, and his kids were too much for him to handle. He needed a release and said he would like he and I to have a secret affair. He was upfront in saying that he could never leave his wife and kids because it would ‘cost him dear’. I was tempted initially but now I see what he is offering me. I have longed for him for years and wonder if once we start an affair, he will change his mind about us. You don’t mention at any point the fact that you would be being disloyal to the woman you call your ‘best friend’. Also, this guy is not offering you the things you want from him. In your longer letter you say you’d fantasised about spending the rest of your life with this guy. Marriages break down all the time due to people meeting others, and if this guy was intending on leaving his wife, you could say to yourself that you have a chance for a proper relationship. But he is not offering you anything but a secret affair and thrills. He has been brutally honest and said that he will not be leaving his wife, so you are now questioning whether this affair would be right. You probably already know what you should do, because things will ultimately only end in tears.

Children consuming empty calories More than a quarter of the calories that children consume are “empty”, a new study has warned. Empty calories, which relate to the likes of fizzy drinks and junk food are described this way because of the low nutritional value they give. Many contain added sugars and solid fats. The study discovered the main culprits of these so-called empty calories as being soft and fruit drinks, cookies, brownies, pizza and ice cream. Researchers used data from a nine year study of children’s eating habits. The study, which examined the eating habits of children between the ages of two and 18, found that there was a decrease in empty calories being consumed over the nine year period. Despite the decrease, over 25 percent of the calories children consumed could be described as “empty”.

Explaining the decline, Dr Wambogo said: “Over the time period studied, we observed a downward trend in the percent of calories coming from empty calories without any associated decrease in total calorie intake. “This trend was mostly driven by declines in added sugars intake, including those from soft drinks and fruit drinks.” The percentage of empty calories being consumed also went up with age, meaning that children aged two were less likely to eat empty calories than their 18-year-old equivalents. This could be down to many reasons, but it’s likely to be due to the increased freedom to eat as you please throughout secondary school and into university. As the children got older, their choice of empty calories changed. The sources swapped from beverages such as fruit drinks

and flavoured milks to foods such as pizza and sweet bakery products. The research underpins important progress in childhood obesity, with the researchers due to present their findings at a virtual conference hosted by the American Society of Nutrition. It’s hoped that the researcher’s recommendations will encourage further education about what constitutes as empty calories and why they should be avoided. Recently, a debate into whether or not packed lunches should be banned from schools was met with fierce advocacy on both sides. It’s claimed that they are contributing to childhood obesity, but people opposing the ban suggest that greater emphasis is placed on parents understanding of what constitutes as a healthy packed lunch.

Creating cocktails at home If you want to master mixing the perfect espresso martini or shake up a classy cosmopolitan whilst we weave our way through lockdown deescalation. Here’s some top tips to bring the magic to your cocktail shaking skills. Tools of the trade You can get hold of a small cocktail starter kit pretty easily. Start really small with just a shaker and a jigger (measurer) or if you’re happy spending around 30e you’ll get everything you need: shaker, jigger, two or thee different strainers and a bar spoon. But you can mix most cocktails at home with a jam jar or drinks bottle and then strain through a rice sieve. Start simple Try a simple sour or spritz recipe to start with. All cocktails have core components that make them up and many are based on the same ratios. A sour element (lemon or lime juice) and a sweetener – in its simplest form, a mix of sugar and water – are all you need for many mixed drinks. If you search for a classic recipe like an old fashioned or a sour and learn the basic ratio of the drink…then just use that ratio as your starting point. i.e. 4 parts

spirit, 2 part sour, 1 part sweetener (and mixer if you want). Be creative Cocktails are all about experimenting…if you like cooking and understand flavours, you’ll have a great time. There are some specs for drinks that need to be perfectly balanced to work, but ask any mixologist and they will tell you that some of the best drinks have happened when they didn’t have the ingredient they were looking for and thought outside the box.

Go large with garnish Garnish often helps to bring aroma, visual stimulus and flavour – all things that our brains use to enhance the taste. Citrus peel garnishes are some of the simplest to create but look the most dramatic. Use a potato peeler to take a long strip off the side of a lemon, grapefruit or lime, then pick up a knife and start experimenting. If you make a cut down the middle so the peel can perch on the side of the glass, the rest is down to you.

Things you should clean every single day Most of us probably make to-do lists that are a little more ambitious than the hours and energy we have in the day. And that rings true for our daily cleaning routines, too. Mopping the kitchen floor sounded like a good plan at 10am, but by 10pm, the couch and Netflix is calling our name. To make the daily cleaning routine more realistic, we're breaking down the tasks you actually need to complete each day, versus those you can totally get away with skipping (at least until tomorrow). These are the tasks that if avoided, can have real consequences, like a smelly home or potentially bigger problems down the line. As for the rest, feel free to save those chores for your bigger weekly cleaning spree. Or, you know, push them off until tomorrow's to-do list. Do the dishes It's all too easy to let dirty dishes pile up in the sink, but skipping this daily chore can make your home smell, or worse, attract pests. If you have a dishwasher, committing to this daily task becomes much easier. Instead of waiting for dishes to reach critical mass before loading them into the dishwasher, skip the sink entirely and get in the habit of loading each cup, plate, and utensil as you use it. Get your family on board with this routine and you'll never come home to a stinky pile of dishes again. Wipe down the work surfaces (and the cooker top) If you leave sauce splatters and jelly spills on the kitchen counter overnight, not only do they have the potential to attract bugs into your home, but they'll

be infinitely harder to wipe away in the morning. To save yourself the extra elbow grease in the morning, take one minute to wipe down the counters and the stovetop at night. Plus, it's a much better start to your day waking up to a sparkling clean kitchen counter. Take out the rubbish Whether you made fish for dinner or cleared all of the outdated produce from your fridge, it's a good idea to empty the kitchen rubbish on a regular basis, ideally daily if you cook every day. If not, the food scraps can start to smell. If you compost, be sure to invest in an air-tight container that won't let smells escape. Treat spills and stains When you accidentally drip wine on the rug during your favourite show or when friends are over, it may be tempting to put off cleaning it. But the longer you wait, the less likely you'll be able to fully remove the stain. Be sure to spot-treat the stain as soon as possible, and definitely within the day, to save your couch, rug, or duvet cover from ruin. Squeegee the Shower Wiping down the shower walls barely counts as cleaning, but adding this 30second task to your daily routine can help prevent the build-up of soap scum, mould, and mildew down the line.

No more soggy salad Just in time for us being allowed to spend more time outdoors; having picnics, Heinz launches a brand new, innovation range of salad dressings. Those guys are smart. Damn smart. In preparation for your upcoming socially distanced picnic, Heinz has released range of salad dressing sprays. Over-pouring will be a thing of the past, with these low-calories dressings, which come in four tasty flavours. The four flavours are: Balsamic with a hint of garlic (1 kcal per spray), Raspberry balsamic (2 kcal per spray), Chilli & lime (2 kcal per spray), Zesty lemon (1 kcal per spray) Not only is the spray bottle innovative in the sense that you’ll never end up with soggy leaves again, but it also means you won’t end up with too much dressing on

your salad, which could lead to excess calories, which if you’re watching your weight is not what you want. Each flavour either contains just one or two calories per spray. Impressive, I think you’ll agree. Maria Jantchi, Senior Brand Manager Kraft Heinz, said: “Gone are the days when salads were drowned by the dressing pouring out all at once. Our new Heinz Salad Dressing Sprays are set to transform the way people enjoy their salads, thanks to their easy spray format. They can be enjoyed wherever you are, and the four delicious varieties mean that healthy food can be tasty food too. Salads never looked or tasted so good!” Heinz’s salad dressing sprays are on sale now and available from most leading supermarkets.

Because it doesn't take very long and could save you from hours of scrubbing grout or re-grouting, it's worth adding to your (and your household's) to-do list. After a couple weeks, this chore will become second nature. Skip It: Wiping Down the Mirrors Smudges on the bathroom mirror may seem like glaring messes, but those fingerprints and water spots aren't likely to spread germs or bacteria, and they won't make your home smell. If you want to do a quick clean that will improve appearances, go ahead and wipe down

the mirror, but if you want to prioritize cleaning the areas that harbour the most bacteria, it's smarter to spend that time wiping down the bathroom sink and taps instead. Skip It: Vacuuming Unless you're targeting crumbs in the kitchen (which can attract pests), you likely don't need to vacuum every single day. Depending upon your family and the foot traffic your home gets, adjust your schedule to once or twice a week. Sure, vacuuming regularly helps maintain your carpets and rugs and

keeps your home looking neat, but this is one chore you can probably put off until tomorrow. Skip It: Cleaning Small Appliances If you're wiping down the microwave or cleaning the coffee machine after every single use, you're probably working too hard. Don't feel too guilty about letting microwave splatters marinate for a couple days. If you make your coffee in a pot, a quick rinse with water and a thorough dry is all that's needed, so you can skip the soap and scrubbing.

Spicy chilli jam A simple recipe for a versatile chilli, tomato and pepper jam. Charring the peppers and chillis first adds extra smoky flavour to this sweet and spicy spread which goes perfectly with sandwiches, as a burger relish, with grilled meats or on a cheese board.

Ingredients 2 x 60g packs red chillies 2 large red peppers 500g tomatoes, halved 2 garlic cloves, chopped 1 tsp grated ginger (2cm piece, peeled) 2 tbsp soy sauce 300g soft brown sugar 100ml white wine vinegar 1 lemon, juiced ½ tsp salt

bowl and cover with clingfilm. Covering the bowl with clingfilm keeps the steam in the bowl, helping to soften the flesh of the veg, which makes it easier to remove the skin. 3. Cool and peel As soon as the chillies and peppers are cool enough to handle, use your hands to peel the skin away from the flesh. You need to remove the charred skin or it will add a bitter flavour to the jam. Discard the skins, stalks and seeds.

1. Char the peppers and chillies Heat a pan (a griddle pan works best if you have one) over a high heat. Add 2 x 60g packs red chillies and 2 large red peppers and cook for 15 mins, turning every few mins, until evenly charred. This adds a light smoky flavour to the jam. The chillies and peppers should be well-charred all over so that the skins peel away easily.

4. Blitz and simmer Transfer the flesh of the peppers and chillies to a food processor with the 500g halved tomatoes and blitz until smooth. Tip the mixture into a large saucepan and add 2 chopped garlic cloves, 1 tsp grated ginger, 2 tbsp soy sauce, 300g soft brown sugar, 100ml white wine vinegar, the juice of 1 lemon and ½ tsp salt; bring to a rolling boil. The aim of a ‘rolling boil’ is to get the jam to its setting point as quickly as possible. It should boil rapidly so that stirring doesn’t stop it bubbling. Put a saucer in the freezer at this stage to cool it for later.

2. A trick for easy peeling Transfer the charred vegetables to a

5. The long simmer Reduce the heat to medium; simmer

Method

for 45-50 mins, stirring frequently to prevent sticking, until the mix is a deep red-brown colour and most of the liquid has evaporated. The jam is ready when a spoonful placed on the cold saucer sets immediately and you can clear a line through it with a spoon. This ensures the jam will be thick, spreadable and not watery. If it doesn’t set, keep boiling and retest every 5 mins, on a cold saucer each time. 6. Sterilise your jars Meanwhile, preheat the oven to its lowest setting. Wash 3 x 180ml jars and their lids in hot soapy water, then rinse thoroughly and shake out the excess. Put upright jars and lids on a baking tray in the oven for 10-15 mins until completely dry. This stage is essential to stop bacteria from getting in. The jars must still be hot when you add the jam. 7. Spoon into jars Remove the sterilised jars from the oven; immediately and carefully spoon in the jam. Seal the lids and allow to cool completely before adding labels. You can use the jam once cold, but it will keep unopened for months in a cool, dark place. Once opened, keep in the fridge and use within 1 month.

Best Before… We are used to seeing “sell by” and “best before by” dates on our groceries, but did you know that there are parts of the car that also have an expiration, or best before date? The difference with car parts is that they wear over time and usage, and so there isn´t always a specific timeframe to work to, but we do know that some of the elements will need replacing sooner than others. You are probably used to the idea of an oil change, but there are other elements too. Our cars need regular servicing, which usually means liquids and filters, changing the engine oil and oil filter every 15,000 km; air filter every 20,000 - 30,000 km; fuel filter every 30,000 - 50,000 km; cabin filter every 15,000 km; brake fluid every 20,000 km or 2 years; and antifreeze every 2 years. Okay, your head might be spinning already, but most of these changes will be dealt with, or at least should be, by qualified mechanics at your local workshop, so they are really more of an awareness of what to expect and when, then there are the major parts you should monitor. Air conditioning If you notice an unpleasant odour or if your car doesn´t cool down, or heat up at this time of year, then it may be time to get the air conditioning checked. A

tuning every two years is essential (especially if your vehicle is already a little older), changing the gas and checking the system for leaks, and replacing the cabin filter, as we mentioned, annually. Wiper blades One you know what you are doing replacing the wiper blades is a relatively simple task, and it is essential that they clean the main part of the windscreen without leaving streaks, and without grinding on the glass. Battery Although the car´s battery receives a charge once the engine is running, over time they do start to fail. The recommendation is to change your battery every 4 or 5 years in order to avoid the car failing to start on the most important morning of your life, which is what usually seems to happen. Catalyst The catalyst change is a specialist job, but it is required approximately every 40,000 kilometres. Airbag The airbag is designed to last for the life of the vehicle, so long as it isn´t used of course, but they must be checked, especially if your vehicle is 10 to 15 years old.

Seat belts Again, they are designed to last the life of the vehicle, but they can become worn in time and the mechanism can fail, so it is important to have these checked frequently on older models. Lights We have spoken many times before about the importance of checking all the lights on a regular basis. However, the lights tend to last 2 to 3 years, on average, so you can plan whilst still checking on a regular basis. Bulbs should always be replaced in pairs by the way. Tyres Again, we have spoken at length about tyres and the importance of checking them, ensuring equal wear and that there is a minimum tread of 1.6 mm. If you plan for when your vehicle might need a little extra care, then it helps to avoid nasty shocks when you take it for a service. These elements do fail, and they are important to replace, so don´t complain to your mechanic or garage if the quote is a little higher than expected if you haven´t factored these replacements into your running costs, otherwise you will be ready for anything, as will your car be.

Keeping Children Safe It is almost unbelievable that whenever there is a focused campaign on the wearing of seat belts and child restraint systems, there are always hundreds of children found either not secured in the vehicles or secured in a dangerously inadequate way. According to data from across Europe, two out of every three children in cars are not secured properly, although not only those not wearing any seat belt or restraining system, many of them have been strapped in incorrectly or inadequately. Children under 135 centimetres in height are not permitted to travel in the front seats of the car, unless the other seats are already occupied by other children, or if the vehicle doesn´t have rear seats. They must also be secured correctly. Children must be in an appropriate seat: If a child is properly restrained in a vehicle, the statistics speak for themselves, as there is a 90% reduction in the risk of injury, and a 75% reduction in the risk of death. The Seat – An appropriate child seat is not determined by age, as children of the same age can differ vastly in their physical characteristics, which is why the correct seat is determined by height and weight. The seat must also comply with the minimum standards as set by the European Union. You can check the label for conformity. In the Back – Statistics prove that the rear seats are the safest place in the event of a collision. In

Spain it is mandatory for children to sit in the back. As we mentioned, the benchmark is based on height, not age, and children under 135 centimetres are not permitted in the front seats, unless the rear is already occupied by other children, or if your vehicle doesn´t have rear seats. Anchorage – It is vital that you read the instructions for child seats thoroughly. The seat must be anchored correctly, using all points on offer, to maximise the security of the seat and, therefore, the occupant. Strap In – The harness securing the child must also be secure. It must be tight enough to prevent limbs from escaping andshould always keep the body as firmly in contact with the seat as possible in order to prevent movement in the event of a collision. Make sure they are secure Face Back – For the smallest of children it is advisable to use a rear-facing seat for as long as possible. In the event of a frontal collision, a baby's neck is not prepared to support the weight of its head pushed forward, which is why seats of groups 0 and 0+ are designed to be placed only in reverse. It is mandatory to extend this position for at least 15 months, and it is possible up to 1.05 m high, as prescribed by the ECE R129 standard. Short Trips are Important - Do not neglect short journeys, they are equally as important as long trips, some might say more so, as many incidents occur close to home on routes most frequently travelled. According to the Royal

Automobile Club of Spain, 37% of drivers acknowledge having taken their children on the school run without a child seat. Others let the older ones buckle themselves in, without checking if they have done it correctly. Coats Off – Believing in brevity rather than realising the risks, children are often left with their coat on or even with their school bags on their backs. These items increase the slack between the seat belt and the body of the child and can hinder the proper functioning of the harness. And even for a few kilometres, safety is the most important factor. Use the Boot – Objects which are loose in a vehicle become projectiles in the event of harsh braking or a collision, as they continue to move with the momentum and can cause serious injury. Put all loose objects, including backpacks, luggage and coats in the boot. Lead by Example – Children learn by example, we all know that, and so it is important that we set a high standard in safety, as well as courtesy, when behind the wheel. Children will imitate the behaviour of their elders so make sure you buckle up too. Safety First – We hope is will never happen but in the event of a collision children must be removed from the damaged vehicle and placed in a place of safety. You must make sure that they are not showing any signs of injury that could be amplified by their extraction, but the safest place is away from the damaged vehicle, away from the scene entirely.

Can Mosquitoes Carry the Coronavirus Lockdown is easing and mosquito season is upon us and so people are concerned. Considering that these bloodsuckers are known to transmit diseases, people are asking if mosquitoes carry the coronavirus? And if so, can they transmit it to humans and infect a person with COVID-19?

infected people, and rarely gets into the blood. Plus, for a virus to pass to a person through a mosquito or other kind of insect bite - such as a tick bite - the virus must be able to replicate inside the mosquito or tick. Neither the new coronavirus nor any other type of coronavirus has been shown to do that.

In short the answer is: it's unlikely. Official guidance from the World Health Organisation (WHO) says there’s no information or evidence to suggest that the new coronavirus could be transmitted through mosquito bites.

Furthermore, mosquitoes are very genetically different from humans. This makes it challenging for viruses to have the ability to infect both of us. We have different receptors on the surface of cells and different replication machinery inside our cells.

For starters, the coronavirus is a respiratory virus, and the main mode of transmission is viral droplets released into the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. For a mosquito to become infected with a virus, it must be present in the blood the mosquito feeds on.

Relatively few human viruses have the ability to infect both humans and mosquitoes. “The vast majority of human viruses (such as influenza, HIV, and herpes) have been infecting humans for a very very long time, and even though many of these end up in our blood, they are still unable to infect mosquitoes. Conversely, there are many mosquito viruses that are unable to infect humans, or any

SARS-CoV2 (the virus that causes COVID-19) is a respiratory virus that is almost exclusively contained within the lungs and respiratory tract of

mammals. There are no known coronaviruses that can infect mosquitoes. Viruses that can be spread to humans by mosquitoes include West Nile virus, the virus that causes dengue fever, and chikungunya virus, which all circulate in the blood of infected people. So it’s pretty clear that COVID19 is the last thing you should be worrying about if a mosquito has been feasting on your leg. Keep swatting them away, though. Due to the heavy focus on COVID-19, many people may forget that disease threats may already be buzzing right outside their window.

Healthy habits that work better at night There are plenty of good-for-you habits you try to achieve on the daily - from mastering new recipes to learning as many stress-management skills as possible. You’re in a state of constant self-improvement, always looking for new ways to feel even better. And we’ve got good news for you: There’s a super-easy way to score even more health perks from the habits you already established in lockdown. Maintaining healthy habits is a good idea at any time of the day, but certain ones can give you more bang for your buck when done before bed. This is because they help to enhance the restorative rituals your body checks off while you sleep. Wash your face The best thing you can do for your skin is remove your makeup and wash your face before you hit the sheets. Cleansing every night is so important because as we sleep, our skin takes advantage of this time to naturally rejuvenate and heal itself. Sleeping with your makeup on leaves impurities on your skin that disrupt this process, leading to bacterial buildup, breakouts,

and premature signs of aging. Apply a retinoid This prescription vitamin A derivative is best known for helping to increase cell turnover and encourage new collagen formation in the skin, which can lead to younger-looking skin when used regularly. Many moisturizers, serums, and even sunscreens claim to contain retinoids, but they’re wasted when added to daytime products, because almost all retinoids are broken down by the sun’s UV rays. To get the most from your topical retinoid, apply it to your face, neck, and hands at bedtime. Use mouthwash When it comes to neutralising the cavity-causing acids that set up shop around our teeth and gums, saliva is the body’s partner-in-crime - only, we produce less of the stuff when we sleep. That can dry out your mouth, leaving teeth and gums vulnerable to things like tooth decay and gingivitis. Enter mouthwash: Swishing some before you hit the hay gives it the whole night to work, while also giving your mouth an extra layer of protection during

the saliva drought. Antiseptic rinses help get rid of bacteria that cause gum disease and bad breath. Meanwhile, fluoride rinses help with preventing tooth decay. Eat yogurt Giving your body a dose of good-for-your-gut bacteria before bed can help your immune system function optimally throughout the night, which is when it’s at its busiest. Look for "live active cultures" on the label of your favourite brand to ensure it contains good bugs like lactobacillus. Some research suggests that noshing on yogurt and other protein-rich foods before bed can also help your muscles repair and grow. Get some exercise When we sleep, our breathing is relatively infrequent and shallow, so oxygen levels are lower overnight. By taking a 15to 20-minute walk before bed (and breathing deeply throughout), you can help your cells stock up on the oxygen they need to accomplish all of their restorative handiwork while you snooze.
