Woman dies in Villamartin house explosion See Main Advert on page 26

Tragedy struck the Orihuela Costa on Friday morning (12th June) as a woman lost her life following an explosion and fire at her home in Calle Amadeo Vives, Villamartin. Investigations are still being carried out as to the reason for the initial explosion.

The woman, believed to be 69 yearsold and of German nationality, was in the house when the explosion happened. This was heard by a pool maintenance man at around 8.40am who also heard the woman shouting for help and he raised the alarm. The lady lived alone at the property and is believed to have been suffering from Diogenes Syndrome, which causes sufferers to hoard belongings and neglect themselves and their homes. It is thought that the considerable amount of items crammed into the house is the reason the fire took hold and spread so quickly throughout the rooms. The sound of sirens filled the air across Orihuela Costa as three fire crews from Torrevieja raced to the scene. These were supported by 2 all-terrain vehicles, 2 ambulances, the Guardia Civil from Pilar and Local Police from the coast.

Burnt out

The lady was trapped inside the burning house when the emergency services arrived and crew members had to enter the property though the balcony as the front door was blocked by Continued on page 2

The woman had suffered serious injuries and was treated by a SAMU medical team but tragically died at the scene despite the efforts of the emergency services experts to revive her. One of the woman’s pet dogs also died in the blaze. The ambulance service also treated a police officer at the scene who sustained a finger injury and a fire-fighter was taken to hospital after fainting and feeling unwell because of the heat of the blaze.

Three metre shark washed up in Alicante A three metre long dead shark washed up in the outer dock of the port of Alicante this week. On Monday morning, officers of the Alicante Port Police removed the body of the massive fish from the outer dock, where it had appeared floating on Sunday night. The Institute of Ecology will be contacted to make arrangements for its transfer there so that marine biologists can study its remains. This is not the first time that large sharks have washed up dead on the Alicante coast. Often, sick fish that no longer have the strength to carry on are washed away by the tides, but local experts haven't seen such a large specimen in a long time. In the Mediterranean there are

few aggressive species, the most dangerous being the great white shark. Other potentially dangerous sharks are the shortfin mako, the blue shark, some species of the genus Carcharhinus

or hammerhead sharks. Sharks are found in just about every kind of ocean habitat, including the deep sea, open ocean, coral reefs, and under the

Arctic ice. Wherever they live, sharks play an important role in ocean ecosystems - especially the larger species that are more “scary to people. Sharks and their relatives were the first vertebrate predators, and their prowess, honed over millions of years of evolution, allows them to hunt as top predators and keep ecosystems in balance. For this reason, the population decline of Sharks due to illegal fishing that takes place in many regions of the world is very worrying. More than 500 different species of shark are known to exist and scientists believe that the first sharks evolved more than 400 million years ago, long before dinosaurs roamed the Earth.

Historic flamingo hatching After several attempts in recent decades, the common flamingo has managed to successfully breed in the Natural Park of the La Mata and Torrevieja, where it had not done so since 1987. The photos, shared by GVA Agroambient, were captured by talented local nature photographer, Federico Kenzelmann Area. Birdwatching tour company Oxytours, which works with local town halls on conservation and education remarked, “For all of us who are passionate about this Protected Natural Area, today is a day of joy.” Oxytours, which organises summer nature trails through La Mata Park with the support of the town hall said that the occasion of the birth of the chicks is “One more reason to take care of it, to talk about it with pride and not to look the other way when it suffers aggressions, to control the necessary means to ensure its conservation.” Why have the flamingos been able to breed successfully this year? The success is due to a combination of factors – the low level of salinity in the lake led to higher levels of the flamingos’ principal food source, the Artemia salina. The low salinity was brought about by heavy rains earlier this year which saw the lake inundated with fresh water. These rains also impeded salt harvesting works and this, combined with the global Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdown mean that there were less people around to disturb the nesting, breeding birds. Experts believe that to breed successfully, flamingos need a steady food source and absolute tranquillity – both of which they

Spain to open borders early

coronavirus. The state of alarm will also end on 21st June, meaning that residents in the country will be able to travel freely once more throughout the territory. Spain implemented one of the strictest coronavirus lockdowns in the world, and most residents are still limited to their province or territorial unit under the government’s ongoing deescalation plan. The Prime Minister announced to the regional premiers that Sunday’s meeting would be the last of the weekly video calls that have been taking place every Sunday since the coronavirus crisis began. He added that their next meeting would be toward the end of July, and would be in person. Beijing city confirmed eight new coronavirus cases in the first seven hours of 14th June, a city official announced. Beijing health official Pang Xinghuo said at a second press conference on Sunday that these eight cases are all linked to Xinfadi market, a major food wholesale market in the city's south-western Fengtai district. All 43 cases in Beijing reported in the previous three days were also linked to the market.

Galicia first to start new normal The far north-western region of Galicia has already announced it intends to end the State of Alarm and will start now on what has been dubbed 'The New Normality' – where life is almost, but not quite, back to normal aside from social distancing and compulsory masks, and which will remain in place until either Spain is Coronavirus-free or an effective vaccination is widely available to the general public.

The Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez has announced that Spain will now reopen its borders early on 21st June rather than on the 1st July as originally planned. The decision to change the date and bring it forward was told to regional leaders during a conference call at the weekend. The border will open to the EU’s Schengen Zone and UK travellers but at the request of the Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa, the border between the two neighbouring countries will remain closed until 1st July. Sánchez expressed particular concern at the meeting about the situation regarding the pandemic in the American continent and in countries such as Russia. Visitors from other non-EU countries will also be allowed into Spain from 1st July without the need to self-quarantine, providing there is a reciprocal agreement on travel. The epidemiological situation of the country of origin will also be taken into account. Borders were closed by the Spanish government under the state of alarm, which was implemented on 14th March in a bid to slow the spread of the

Already, 52 percent of Spain is on 'Phase 3', but about another quarter of the country will move onto it from 'Phase 2' this coming Monday. New 'Phase 3' areas are the three provinces of the Comunidad Valenciana (Alicante, Valencia and Castellón); the remainder of Castilla-La Mancha (the provinces of Albacete, Toledo and Ciudad Real – those of Cuenca and Guadalajara were already on 'Phase 3' last week); the province of Girona in Catalunya (joining that of Tarragona and parts of Lleida and Barcelona) plus all of the province of Barcelona except the city's metropolitan area – two health departments in the province of Lleida, Alt Pirineu and the Arán Valley, will remain on 'Phase 2', although the rest of the province has already been on 'Phase 3' for a week; the Spanish outpost of Ceuta on the northern Moroccan coast; and five provinces in Castilla y León. From yesterday, the only parts of Spain which will still be on 'Phase 2' is the Greater Madrid region, the

Barcelona metropolitan area, the departments of Alt Pirineu and the Arán Valley in Lleida, and the Castilla y León provinces of Salamanca, Ávila, Segovia and Soria. Regional governments in phase 3 areas, if they have not already, will be given licence to decide whether

movement between their provinces is permitted. Also, regions will be at liberty to decide whether or not to end the State of Alarm Spain has been in since the weekend of 14th March, if they believe their pandemic situation allows them to do so.

HOW DO I RESERVE A PROPERTY TO BUY? Rebecca Serwotka Rebecca Serwotka - Your favourite local property expert, of Inmobiliaria Real Estate Agents in Ciudad Quesada & published author of “Moving Forward - 25 Essential Rules For Buying & Selling Real Estate Without Going Crazy.” Request your FREE copy today!Featured on Best Buy Spain - Property TV.

Reserving a home to buy in Spain is very simple. Very straightforward. But also very different to that of the U.K. So what is expected of you, after you’ve found a home you wish to purchase?

need to just make the deposit transfer directly from your bank direct. Most times, your deposit will need to be paid before you’ve had time to activate your account with a currency company. If you’re not in a position to pay a deposit, don’t make an offer! This can be very upsetting for a home seller, especially if you’ve made a low offer, and they’ve taken their time to accept it. If you’re only interested in knowing if the homeowner would be open to discussing an offer, then take advice from your Real Estate Agent instead. It’s unfair allowing the homeowner to think they’ve sold because they accepted your offer when, in reality, you had no intention to move forward with the purchase.

Here is a brief overview of what you will be required to do next, to take the property off the market:

When you’ve set your heart on a property, the only way you’ll be able to secure it, is by paying a deposit.

Make an offer! Take guidance from your Real Estate Agent, regarding how much your offer needs to be. If your future home is in a sought after area, and other properties are selling fast, then your offer should be pretty close to the asking price. Sometimes, paying the full price maybe the only way to go, especially if it’s been priced correctly for sale in the first place.

If your deposit money is not available, you’re not ready to make an offer just yet.

Reserve it! Once your offer has been accepted, you’ll have to pay a deposit. You’ll either be required to pay by a credit card or bank transfer. If you’re being asked to pay your deposit in cash, make sure you have this written into your reservation contract. Credit card payments tend to offer good exchange rates. And, if you are given the choice, it’s always better to pay in the currency of the country you are in, i.e. Euros in Spain. For bank transfers, you can use a currency company, i.e. Moneycorp, however if you haven’t already set up your account with them, you may

Once your deposit has been paid, the property will be reserved for you and only you, as this will stop anyone else from buying your future home in Spain! New gambling laws in force from today The new Gambling Law comes into force today (Tuesday) with restricted advertising and an imposed minimum distance of 850 metres from schools. The Law for the regulation of gambling and the prevention of pathological gambling in the Valencian Community comes into force this week, after three years in the making. The legislation includes new elements such as a minimum distance for gaming halls and betting houses (850 metres) from schools, restricted advertising and machines without light or sound when they are deactivated. The objective of the new law, published in the Official Gazette of the Generalitat (DOGV), is to respond to the growing social concern about the proliferation of gambling in Spain, to protect minors, to provide security to customers and to prevent fraud. Slot machines that are inside hospitality premises (such as cafeterias or bars) will have an activation and deactivation mechanism and will not be able to emit light and sound while they are not being used. This way, it is hoped they will not ‘entice’ gamblers when not in use. Hoteliers and cafe owners are required to install this

deactivation system within one year. The progressive elimination of betting machines is also proposed as licenses come to an end, and a new regulation on pathological gambling prevention has been adopted. From now on, a minimum distance of 500 meters must be established between new gaming rooms, bingo halls and casinos. The Valencian Government may not grant new licenses or operating permits for new machines for up to four years. Another aspect of the new legislation is to bar access to those who present symptoms of drunkenness or appear on a register of people excluded from access to gambling in the Valencian Community. Fines for flouting new gambling laws will range from 601 to 6,000 euros and may include the temporary suspension of closure of the premises for up to one year. Very serious infractions will carry penalties of up to 600,000 euros and five-year suspensions. All proceeds of gambling fines will go to finance programs for prevention of and fight against gambling addiction. The advertisement of betting

houses will now be restricted in regional public media such as the Valencian television station À Punt. Tax benefits and other incentives will be on offer to media, sports clubs and associations that campaign against gambling. Since its approval, the new gambling laws have brought about criticism from within the gambling sector. The Community Gambling Workers Union, which represents employees from the 426 gambling halls, presented a petition with 1,630 signatures against the new laws. The employers of the private gambling chain in Spain Cejuego warned that "it will bring about poverty and unemployment, which will add to that already generated by the greatest economic and social crisis in the country." The Valencian Business Confederation (CEV) also asked that the Covid-19 crisis be taken into account and that more jobs not be jeopardized with a law that it does not see as a "priority". Associations within the gaming and hospitality sector as well as workers’ unions jointly called for a paralysis of the law, predicting "great damage" to employment.

Portuguese drug trafficker arrested National Police in Orihuela have arrested a man who is wanted by the Portuguese authorities accused of drug trafficking and for whom they had issued a European Arrest and Extradition Warrant. Officers in the organised crime squad, the BPPJ, in Alicante received a tip off from the International Fugitives Group of the Judicial Police about the

possibility of a potential Portuguese fugitive hiding in the Vega Baja. Officers mounted an investigation to track down the man, who was wanted for transporting more than 2,400 kilos of hashish resin in a truck. He had previously been arrested in Portugal and sentenced to six years in prison. He had two years and eight months left to serve but

fled Portugal to hide out in Spain. The investigation led officers to locate the alleged fugitive, who was detained in the district of San Carlos in Orihuela. The 43-year-old detainee was placed at the disposal of the Central Investigating Court, which will be in charge of carrying out the necessary procedures for the European Arrest and Extradition Warrant.

Orihuela Mayor demands flood protection The Mayor of Orihuela Emilio Bascuñana has been outlining the municipalities vulnerability to more seasonal floods and calling for more support from regional President Ximo Puig. The Mayor said that unless Puig grants more aid the municipality could once again bare the brunt of more devastating floods this autumn and winter. The demand for funding came during a teleconference and the Mayor made it quite clear he wants a share of the millions of euros earmarked for flood relief across the Vega Baja. Emilio Bascuñana requested that the Counsell carry out the urgent and outstanding projects needed since September.ç He said: “Since in just three months the cold drop will again

37yearold worker falls eight metres

Torrevieja hiring 152 beach patrollers

Free movement still restricted

A 37-year-old worker fell from a height of eight metres in Calle Finlandia in Torrevieja. The alarm was raised at 11.30am on Friday and the Emergency Information and Coordination Center (CICU) dispatched one SVB ambulance unit and one SAMU ambulance unit to the scene. The SAMU medical team carried out various stabilization and immobilization manoeuvres on the 37year-old before he was transferred to Torrevieja hospital.

Torrevieja beaches are due to reopen this week (Wednesday, June 17th) and as part of the new normal, the town hall is set to hire 152 beach monitors to help ensure members of the public are abiding to the rules regarding social distancing and beach safety. Beach patrols will also monitor the entrances and exits to the town’s beaches and work to keep facilities clean.

Despite 70 percent of Spain being in Phase 3 since yesterday, fear of new outbreaks is ensuring regional governments are not allowing free movement and are keeping strict tabs on night time bars and nightclubs. The regions are now firmly in charge of their own destiny as control has been passed back from the national government in Madrid. Once the sixth and final extension to the State of Alarm was granted until 21st June, regions moving into Phase 3 will now make their own decisions. It is the regional governments in this final part of the process that will decide on whether or not to permit movement between them, provided they agree with each other. Once they have taken charge, some of these administrations – that were urging the central government to speed things up while it had control of their powers – have slammed on the brakes, with fears over new infections and spikes of the coronavirus prompting them to limit mobility to provinces within the same region, despite the fact that in Phase 3 – in which 70 percent of the population finds itself from today – movement could have been negotiated between provinces. This situation will come to an end next Sunday, when the final extension to the state of alarm ends and Spaniards will be able to move freely across the entire territory. Above all else, the different speeds that each region is adopting in this asymmetrical Phase 3 are reflected in nightlife, one of the controversial points of this last phase before the so-called “new normality.” The central government

A team of beach workers will also work every morning and evening to assemble and disassemble grid markers that will outline ‘plots’ on beaches where people will be allowed to sit or lie. The dividers will have to be disassembled every night to allow for beach cleaning. The positions are open to people over 16 with preference given to the already unemployed. There is no requirement for previous experience. All those interested in applying should send their CV to contacto@reacho.es or call 692 49 88 77.

has gone no further than proposing a framework, which consists of opening these premises with a third of their usual capacity and with no dance floors. Galicia, the Canary Islands, Andalusia, Asturias, the Balearic Islands, Castilla y León, Murcia, Navarre and the Basque Country have decided to delay the opening of night-time bars and nightclubs on the basis that they could be a focal point for infections. They don’t want to repeat what happened in South Korea, where an outbreak in nightclubs in May forced the adoption of new strict measures and a

delay to the reopening of schools. They have taken this decision despite generalized protests in the sector, which views the measures as discriminatory, given that the public can enter cafés and restaurants. All of these conditions and the restrictions for the seven territories in Phase 2 will last for less than a week. From 21st June, the new normality will come into force, which will see some restrictions remain, such as the obligation to use masks when a safe distance of 1.5 meters cannot be respected.

Safe list of origin countries The Spanish government is compiling a list of 'safe countries' of origin for tourists arriving from outside Europe after 1sy July, when full international borders will reopen. Travellers from Europe will be allowed to visit Spain from this coming Sunday, 21st June. For non-European nations, a complete plan including three criteria – as yet not specified, but which will relate to their national Covid-19 incidence and testing – will be drawn up. A 'safe list’ of origin countries where tourists will be allowed to travel to Spain from, or where they can fly from subject to greater restrictions will then be put into place. Some countries are still refusing entry to people from Spain – although these are gradually opening up, with Greece announcing Athens airport would now allow planes from Italy, Spain and The Netherlands to land – and Spanish president Pedro Sánchez says the situation is likely to be reciprocal: People from those which allow travellers from Spain to enter will also be able to cross into Spanish territory. Sánchez has also called for countries beyond Europe to accept – when they eventually open their borders – travellers

from anywhere within the EU, not just specific member States. It is not clear whether the list of 'safe countries outside Europe' refers to those beyond the continent, or whether it will also

cover European nations which are not part of the EU, such as Albania, Turkey and Serbia, and if the latter, whether the UK will be mentioned as it is still midway through the transition period to full

departure after having 'officially' left the Union at the end of January. Restrictions on travel from Russia could be included, even though it is technically considered a 'European' nation – western Russia, including the capital, Moscow, and the former capital, Saint Petersburg, are 'European', although the eastern part, or Siberia, is normally classified as being in Asia. Before the weekend, the European Union said it was going to leave it to member States to agree amongst them on a 'closed but periodicallyreviewable' list of non-risk or lowrisk third countries, and 'trusted they would be capable of doing so'. The nations that figure on the list will need to be approved by all 27 leaders, since once a traveller from anywhere in the world is on EU soil, he or she is able to travel freely to any member State during their stay. As well as epidemiological data – which the European Commission admits will be difficult to guarantee the accuracy of in all countries – the criteria for the list will include how well destination countries will be able to contain the virus if a suspected imported case is detected.

More than half of residents in the Community want to be tested for Covid19 A new survey has revealed that over half of people in the Valencian Communty would like to be tested for Covid-19. In a survey 57.1% of people here said that they would like to undergo a test, with just over 30% of people saying they don’t feel it would be necessary. The survey revealed that more than half of residents in the Valencian Community want to undergo the coronavirus test, either to find out if they currently have the disease or if they have overcome it, asymptomatically. The was survey carried out by the Data Science for Covid-19 working group, led by the Presidential Commissioner for the Valencian Strategy for Artificial Intelligence, engineer Nuria Oliver. Of that 57.1% of the total who want the test, five percent are people who want to take the covid test because they are the principal carers for someone in a high risk group. 31.5% of the respondents surveyed do not see it as "necessary". 9.2% of those surveyed have already had the coronavirus test, although it was not specified whether by medical prescription or by personal decision in a private centre. Across Spain, the percentages do not vary much in comparison to those

surveyed in the Valencian Community 53.3% of those surveyed overall also want to be tested for covid-19, compared to 26.2% who do not intend to undergo the diagnostic test. Back to the regional survey, six out of ten residents in the Valencian Community (59.8%) said that in the event of being diagnosed, they would have no problem isolating themselves from the rest of the people they live with, nor would they continue caring for their children or older people. This is the eighth ‘wave’ of the survey carried out by the working group so scientists have a gauge of previous opinions. The latest survey revealed that, little by little, consequences from months of home confinement are beginning to be less obvious, such as the excessive use

of technology in adults (38.5% vs. a previously surveyed maximum of 46.1%), a high level of anxiety (23% vs. 25.1%) or stress (18.4 vs. 20.6%). Instead, one significant answer has risen to a new maximum in this latest survey: the high level of sadness (with 16.8%). Excessive consumption of alcohol also reached a new maximum, a problem which was acknowledged among 5% of the total of those surveyed. When asked about the activities people consider to be “low risk of contagion” of Covid-19, the practicing of sport continues to be popular among individuals (an option considered by 81.9% of the respondents), followed by going shopping for small children (71.8%), attending premises by appointment such as hairdressers (61.3%) and meeting at home with friends (37.4%). At the opposite end of the scale of considered risk are traveling by plane (only 7.3% see it as low risk) and attending school (10.4%). The eighth wave of the survey was carried out between May 15 and 21 and the margin of error is 2.64%, according to the team behind the project, which began in late March, coinciding with the second week of confinement.

Bar customer pays for beers he didn’t drink!

A bar customer in Granollers, Barcelona province, has paid the owners for 'all the beers he could not drink during lockdown'. Based upon the price charged of €2.50 for a caña (half a pint), and the bar being shut for 36 days due to the 'stay at home' rule, at a rate of one beer a day, the customer calculated the loss suffered by the owners by his absence as €90 in total. So he paid them this plus a €10 tip - €100 in total. reopening with a piece of paper showing his handwritten calculations. He would tend to go to Can Juli two or three times a week for a beer and to read the bar’s copy of the daily newspaper. Occasionally, Pili or her brother would give him a small free snack or tapas to go with his drink. However, they were not expecting to be paid for the beers they had been unable to sell him while they were forced to be closed. “Every morning, thanks to things like this, it really makes you feel like going to work,” said a grateful Pili.

Two fraudsters arrested Spain’s blue flag beaches in Almoradi The Civil Guard has arrested two people, aged 38 and 43 years old, in Almoradí as the alleged perpetrators of two crimes of fraud relating to the sale of 2,738 bottles of whiskey, valued at around 28,000 euros. The dodgy duo ordered the bottles from a company in Seville and without paying for them, resold the same products to another company in Murcia. The events occurred on 2nd June, when a wholesale company based in Lantejuela, Seville, received an order for nearly 3,000 bottles of alcoholic beverages. It was agreed that payment would be made by bank transfer, once the bottles reached their destination. However, despite the delivery being made, but the money was not transferred. The Sevillian company, was immediately suspicious that it had been the victim of a scam when the money did not arrive, added to which the buyers stopped taking their calls. The delivery driver also reported that when the truck arrived at the industrial estate industrial in Callosa de Segura, he did not leave the whiskey inside a warehouse, but instead it was placed on the pallets on a public road, as requested by two men. The police were called

immediately and told of the company’s suspicions. Officers discovered that the delivery note included a false ID and that the van driven by the two people who met the van was rented from Almoradi. Officers carried out surveillance on the van rental location until the men came to return the vehicle. Among their belongings they found evidence and documents that linked them to the investigation. With the suspects under arrest, officers then needed to know where the bottles of alcoholic beverages had been moved to in order to recover them before they were passed on again. After analysing the route they had taken with the vehicle, they arrived at a warehouse in Lorquí

(Murcia) where, after inspection and examination of several batches of bottles, they located the four pallets. The owners of the business had no idea that the bottles came from an illegal transaction, and had them stored and ready to be sold to the public. The two men arrested for the original scam on the Seville company, were then charged with a second crime of fraud for the sales of the same bottles to the Murcian company. The rapid action of the Guardia Civil saw that practically all of the bottles were recovered, if it had been a few hours more, this would have been impossible as the merchandise would have been distributed across different locations.

This week, the annual blue flag awarding has been announced just ahead of the summer holiday season – which officially starts when schools break up around the second or third week in June – and, with 589 of these prestigious quality kitemarks, Spain continues to rule the coastlines of Planet Earth. Spain has remained unbeaten worldwide in its number of blueflag beaches for 33 years in a row, and 2020 is no exception – even though the bar had been raised much higher due to the criteria including 'Coronavirus-safe' measures. In whole numbers, the Comunidad Valenciana holds more blue flags than anywhere else in Spain, which holds more than anywhere else in the world, at 148, followed by Andalucía at 120 – which is logical, given that these two regions have the longest coastlines. The Balearics lost the most flags, with Menorca being

stripped of four and Ibiza of two, and three marinas losing theirs, giving a net loss of nine – but it still has 54 blue-flag beaches and ports, with 39 on the largest island of Mallorca, 10 in Ibiza and five in Menorca. Although 80 beaches, yacht marinas and cruise ports lost last year's flags, another 23 gained new ones, leaving a net increase of 19 on last year's 669, giving a total of 688, of which 589 were for beaches. Local flags: In our province of Alicante the list of blue-flag beaches and ports are numerous, and include the beach on the island of Tabarca. They are found in Alicante city itself (Postiguet, L'Albufereta, Saladar-Urbanova, and San Juan). In Altea: Cap Blanc, La Roda, L'Espigó. Benidorm: Levante, Poniente and Mal Pas. Benissa: Fustera. Calpe: Cantal Roig, La Fossa, Arenal-Bol. Elche: Arenals del Sol-Sur, Carabassí, L'Altet, La

Marina, Les Pesqueres-El Rebollo. Finestrat: La Cala. Guardamar del Segura: Centre, El Moncaio, La Roqueta. L'Alfàs del Pi: Racó de l'Albir. Pilar de la Horadada: Conde, Higuericas, Jesuitas, Mil Palmeras, Puerto, Rocamar. Santa Pola: Calas del Este, Calas Santiago Bernabéu, Levante, Tamarit, Varador. Teulada-Moraira: El Portet, L'Ampolla, Les Plagetes. Jávea: Arenal, Granadella, La Grava. Dénia: Les Bovetes, Les Deveses, Las Marinas, Marineta Cassiana, Els Molins, Punta del Raset. Foreign lemons drive down prices Guardamar man climbs The massive influx of lemons from South Africa and Argentina is driving down prices in the Alicante province. The seasonal success of the Alicante lemon has been cut short by an influx to the market of lemons from overseas. Suppliers from both South Africa and Argentina have advanced their selling season by a few weeks after detecting a high demand in Europe for the citrus fruit in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic – high in vitamin C, demand for lemons and other citrus fruit has soared. The Alicante lemon crop had been doing incredibly well this season with prices close to a euro per kilo for local fruit. However, the arrival of South African and Argentinean lemons has caused the collapse of prices over the last few days with cost per kilo falling from 90c per kilo to 40c per kilo over the course of just two weeks. The situation has now caused many lemon producers in the Vega Baja to stop the field harvests that were underway. President of Orihuela union of cultivators (Asaja) José Vicente Andreu told the press that the South African lemon has

completely taken over the European lemon and South Africa’s own price war with Argentinean growers means that Spanish growers are suffering dire consequences as prices plummet.

The South African lemon is brought to Spain by boat, via the port of Rotterdam, and arrives packaged and ready for sale to distribution chains at a very low price. "In addition to flooding the market and driving down the price, it does not leave a euro in our country, not to mention the risk of pests entering with it," says Andreu. The Argentinean lemon is brought in by Spanish buyers and is packaged and distributed in warehouses here. The local fruit most affected by the current situation is the Verna lemon, a variety that is

currently in season and is the most abundant in the Alicante province. The recent influx of foreign fruit means that while 70% of the local crop has been sold, there is still 30% left on trees and in warehouses. Only the Spanish organic lemon is safe from the price war, due to the lack of competition. The Asaja union calculates losses at a national level of around 25 million euros and warns that this situation will lead to numerous lawsuits between agricultural entrepreneurs who already had the harvest sold under contract at 0.85-0.90 euros per kilo but are now finding that buyers are trying to readjust prices downward under the guise of adapting to current prices. The union revealed that the legal service of its organization is already working to demand full compliance with the already signed purchase contracts. "The big supermarket chains no longer want Spanish lemon, they are going for the South African one, but there are many signed contracts that set a price in advance that now some buyers do not want to pay," Andreu said.

tree to escape capture A man in Guardamar climbed a tree and proceeded to throw branches and sticks and Guardia Civil officers in an attempt to evade capture this week. The 42 year old man is alleged to have been caught in the act of robbing a local restaurant in the early hours of the morning when officers surprised him. He fled the scene and climbed a 7 metre tree where he remained for three hours, throwing sticks, branches and stones at police until eventually he was arrested. The incident occurred on Tuesday night in Guardamar del Segura and, after appearing in court, the man has since been released with charges. On Tuesday night, just after half three in the morning, police received notice that the alarm system at a local restaurant had been triggered. Arriving at the scene, officers saw a man fleeing the restaurant and climbing to the top of a seven metre tree nearby. The Guardia Civil officers urged the man to get down from the tree for his own safety but the suspect refused and instead decided to launch small stones and branches at the

police. Firefighters were called to the scene but could not reach the top of the tree, so after three hours of waiting the Guardia Civil decided to climb up after the man to bring the situation to a close. Once the police began their

ascent, the man jumped from a height of about three meters to try to flee, but the fall caused minor injuries to his arm as well as cuts and scrapes from branches on the way down, and he was unable to flee as planned. He was arrested as soon as he hit the ground.

AA Real Members’ Stories Throughout 2020, each month, the Costa Blanca People features a real life story from real people about what it is like to suffer from Alcholism, what they did to overcome their addiction with alcoholic, and how they lead their lives today on their road of recovery. What is AA? Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. There are no dues or fees for AA membership, it is self supporting through its members’ own contributions. AA is not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organisation or institution, does not wish to engage in any controversy, neither endorses nor opposes any causes. Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety.

An AA Member’s Story... My name is Marshall and I am an Alcoholic! I was brought up well in a loving home wanting for nothing of a material nature. I know now the household was an alcoholic one but I do not believe this is what made me an alcoholic. As a young boy I did not feel as though I fitted in anywhere, my school was a good distance from where I lived so I did not really have any solid social group at either place. My younger sister did not keep well as a baby and as a result got the majority

of my parents attention, leaving me, for the most part, alone to my own devices. I was young when I took my first drink possibly 11 or 12, I can’t be sure, but I can be sure that the difference in me was nothing short of amazing! I was no longer the shy social misfit, I felt as though I belonged, even when it was clear I did not. As I grew up a little this lead to me mixing in much older social circles, I had discovered the pub and I was home! I quickly chose my career path, I was going to be a restaurateur that way I could forever be in those surroundings, have access to booze. I had many great times in my early drinking years, I was no longer alone, alcohol gave me everything I wanted, a social life, friends, good jobs and a girlfriend or two. At this point my life took a turn, my retiring parents had offered to bankroll me in my own restaurant in Spain, I packed my bags and was off! Quickly setting up a new life in Spain, got a place to stay and opened the restaurant. I met a woman and we had a daughter together, I was 24 by this stage and I was drinking more than ever. My drinking had slowly progressed to day and morning drinking and it was an everyday occurrence, in reflection, no longer was alcohol helping me socialise, it was helping me function on a day to day basis. What I did not know at the time was that the alcohol was slowly going to take everything away from me. In four years it was all gone! In the midst of my downward spiral, my now sober father had tried to introduce me to AA, but I was no alcoholic, I could stop anytime I wanted! So I did it Marshall’s way.

With the business closed, no fixed abode and my daughter and her mum back in Scotland I decided to sort myself out! Back in Scotland with a new career far away from bars and trying to build a new life, I slowly slipped back into my drinking, I could no longer drink during the day due to work, but I sure tried to make up for it at night, every night! Alcohol came first and once I had a taste for it there was no stopping me. Best laid plans, time with my daughter everything went out the window. I stumbled through the next for or five years, moving from one failed relationship to another, pushing my daughter further and further away. I met my current partner around this time and we moved in together. Like before, my drinking progressed, although this time it was more aggressive, faster. Morning drinking was back, it was the only way I could get through my day, I could not face other people, or life sober. The following couple of years saw a drink driving charge and my daughter finally leaving my life all together. I lied and cheated my way through many other problems and issues, borrowing money, skipping bills, my life was an unmanageable mess, and I was miserable. But I put on a front, I didn’t have any problems I was happy. I was blind, I could not see the common denominator. I heard a man say, “drink did not always get me into trouble but every time I was in trouble I was drunk.” That was me! Like everything in life things caught me up, a new boss at work not as lenient as

before. My home life getting strained, my partner getting fed up with me selfishness and general lack of presence. It all came to ahead one morning, after my usual half bottle something snapped, floods of emotions I had been successfully suppressing for years hit me, self loathing, guilt, to name a couple. I could not go on like this, it had to end! My partner suggested I contact a friend of mine who was in AA and I was dragged to my first meeting that night, 22nd November 2018. Much like my first drink I do not remember much of that meeting, what I do remember is the drive home, three members of AA, best of friends laughing and joking, happy. I was miserable, but something stuck. Over the next few weeks I got taken to as many meetings as

I could fit in. It was strongly suggested that I remain open minded and listen! I did for a change admitting that Marshall’s way doesn’t work. I learnt what was wrong with me, I was suffering from alcoholism I wasn't such a horrible human being after all, and I was not alone! I could see a light. It has not been easy but I know now what to do when things get to me, I don’t need to pick up a drink. Life gets better slowly, my partner and myself have just had a baby girl, my now 16 year old is back in my life more than ever and I live in a happy home. My job is secure and I now have great prospects. A day at a time as I sit and write this I am 517 wonderful days sober. Today I am a father, a loving partner, a responsible employee and a good friend to many, I’m not just an alcoholic!

Regions to encourage tourism

Library image

The government has given the green light to a pilot tourism scheme that will see 10,900 visitors from Germany arrive in the Balearic Islands from 15th June. This was followed by Health Minister Salvador Illa announcing that other regions in Spain were welcome to launch their own pilot program. “Other regions have the possibility of putting it into practice as a pilot scheme if they consider it appropriate,” he said. In an effort to reactivate the sector, the government announced that the compulsory 14-day quarantine for overseas arrivals would end by 1st July. The Tourism Ministry then proposed that safe travel corridors be opened up between regions in the European Union with a similar level of control over the outbreak. Of course, Spain receives many visitors from the United Kingdom as well as from Germany, but while tourists from

Germany will be allowed to visit the Balearic Islands from 15th June, this option will not be available to Britain. “We are in a similar epidemiological situation as Germany but that is not the case with the United Kingdom,” said Iago Negueruela, the head of the Balearics tourism department. “What’s more, with Germany we are negotiating within EU conditions and the Schengen zone, which is not the case with the United Kingdom.” Negueruela, however, did say that talks with UK tour operators and authorities were underway to enable the arrival of British tourists as soon as possible. The Spanish government has made a series of moves to encourage tourists to return to the country. The coronavirus crisis has devastated the tourism industry, which accounts for 12 percent of Spain’s gross domestic product (GDP). The pilot scheme in the Balearic Islands

will see visitors fill out health forms and present them to the authorities on arrival, their temperature will then be taken. If the tourist has no coronavirus symptoms, they will be able to begin their holiday on the island and will not have to observe the 14-day quarantine. All visitors, however, need to provide their contact information and the address of where they are staying, be it at a hotel or their second residence. A similar procedure will take place in airports across Spain once the country enters the “new normality” at the end of the de-escalation process. There are advantages to partially reopening borders before 1st July. The pilot scheme will test the coronavirus safety protocols in airports, hotels and beaches. This will allow the Spanish government to be able to make any changes needed to reduce the risk of a new coronavirus outbreak when Spain officially opens to international visitors.

GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP Considering the week it has had, sterling was relatively unscathed. Global stock markets fell as fears of a second wave of coronavirus infections came to fruition. The UK’s FTSE 100 was affected, and while politicians are encouraging the gradual unwinding of lockdown, economists have warned that if people fear they will catch Covid-19, then they will stay at home, despite loosening measures. The UK’s economy shrank by a shocking 20.4% in April. To put this into context, this contraction is three times greater than the 2008-2009 economic downturn. The only silver lining is that April is probably the worst month, because the government started easing restrictions from May onwards. Still, it paves the way for the UK heading into recession. While this was the tip of the iceberg, the gloomy news had been building all week for sterling. The British Retail Consortium reported another month of struggle for retailers in May. Total sales were down 5.9%, which was a less drastic decline than April’s fall of 19.1%. Still, nothing to write home about. The RICS house price balance also fell to a ten-year low of -32%. Growth and output figures for manufacturing and industrial production showed monthly falls of 24.4% and 20.3%, and GDP shrank by 10.4% in the three months to April, and by 20.4% in April alone. The OECD packed a punch too, with its Economic Outlook underlining the UK’s economic vulnerability with an estimate that GDP could contract 11.4% if there is no renewed Covid-19 flare up, and 14% is there is a second wave in 2020. The media have focused on the idea that Britain will take the biggest economic hit, especially if a no-deal Brexit has a strongly negative effect on trade and jobs. Yes that’s right, Brexit is back. Although none of what the OECD said should have come as a shock, investors did feel an obligation to reach, with sterling down by an average of 0.2% after the news. Despite all of that negative news, sterling saw an average weekly gain of 0.4%. Not exactly last week’s performance, where the pound was the strongest of the major currency bunch, and while it did lose ground to the always safe-havens of the Swiss franc and

Japanese yen, so did all the other currencies. Also of note was that Brazil overtook the UK on the tragic number of coronavirus fatalities.

EUR It was a similar story across the pond, with European shares such as the Dax in Germany and France’s CAC 40 losing more than 4% on stock market fears of the pandemic. European production data was likewise dismal, with Italy’s industrial production in April down by 42.5% from the same month last year, and German output was down by an annual 25.3%. The OECD expects the Euroland economy to shrink by 9.1% if Covid-19 remains under control, but by 11.5% if a second wave flares up. Still, this was better than the UK prediction, with the pound and euro unchanged on the week against one another. The Sentix measure of investor confidence for June was 17 points higher on the month at -24.8, though a couple of points short of forecast, and Eurozone GDP was a touch better than expected, with a 3.6% quarterly contraction in Q1. Could we be seeing the start of a straggly recovery? Perhaps, but it will take time. After last week’s almost doubling of the Pandemic Emergency Purchase Programme, and pushing out its end date to at least June 2021, investors were relieved. They had feared the ECB might hold back in order to pressurise EU governments into implementing fiscal stimulus. European Central Bank president Christine Lagarde volunteered her services to help defuse the legal tussle between Germany’s constitutional court and ECB monetary policy, and also encouraged politicians to press ahead with their approval of the €750 billion of support measures proposed by the European Commission. Germany’s finance minister Olaf Scholz, expressed hope that he and his 26 counterparts will be able to reach agreement shortly on the €750 billion recovery package touted by the European Commission. In other news President of the Eurogroup and Portugal’s Finance Minister Mario Centeno announced his departure and hopes to find a replacement soon, with his resignation triggering a race to lead the powerful EU finance group.

Three more rescues The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre (EHCRC) has been called out by the police on three separate occasions this month to rescue a horse a donkey and a pony. Which were all were found wandering on the roads. The only place for these equines to go to be saved is EHCRC, founded by Sue and Rod Weeding. The husband and wife team work very closely with all police forces and when the authorities find or are alerted to cases Rod is call on to rescue the animal, inevitably the calls out come in the small hours. The centre already has more than120 animals and is stretched to capacity, but Sue and Rod never refuse an animal that needs help and will cleverly rearrange and adjust things to help a new one. Often there are complex and difficult issues regarding abandoned animals, requiring time and negotiations which Sue and Rod have to deal with as well. Very few of these equines can be re-homed as most do not actually belong to the centre but are a “case number “and therefore not eligible for re-homing. The latest rescue a donkey to arrive at the centre came with a myriad of problems: malnutrition, worms, neglected hooves creating problems for him to walk. He also had a painful infection due to untreated

wounds and he will need castrating as soon as possible in order that he can be put with the centres other equines. Easy horse Care Rescue Centre is the only one of its kind in the Costa Blanca that works entirely to home, help, save and heal, any and all abandoned and abused equines, including ponies and donkeys rescued in collaboration with the police. Due to the lockdown all of the centres fundraising avenues have been ceased and it is currently relying on donations. Due to the financial pressures of Lockdown many more equines have been abandoned or found wandering on roads. The rescue of equines is incredibly costly, not

only in emotional terms , but financially. The feeding of 120 every day is a massive expense, added to that are vets bills for treatments, operations and medicines and the farrier for trimming hooves or specialty shooing. Sue Weeding said: “It’s a crucial time for us, even with the planed reopening of our shops from 1st July. We really need your help at this time so please donate or fundraise if you can or contact us to volunteer via our website www.easyhorsecare.net. We are also now starting to run new daily, limited number, group tours at €10 per person. These must be booked via whatsapp, Facebook, phone or e-mail.

Willow International Academy Willow International Academy in Ciudad Quesada is an International British curriculum school for all children aged 4 to 18 years, where the school values both the academic and social development of every pupil. School Director Amanda Riding said, “We aim to enable every young person to fulfil their academic potential, providing the foundations for them to excel in all that they do and to leave prepared, to achieve all of their ambitions.” The school held an open day last month and feedback from parents and students alike has been overwhelmingly positive. Amanda said, “The open day was absolutely amazing. It was wonderful to finally meet all the parents and students. We had so many positive comments and a fantastic amount of new student registrations for a brand new start at our beautiful school in September.” The parents too were full of praise for what they saw. One father said, “What a very professional and warm welcome we were given by Amanda and her staff. The school looks absolutely wonderful, and my wife,

daughter and myself were extremely impressed. Our 11 year-old daughter cannot wait to start.” Another mum, who’s 12 year-old is registered at Willow to being in September said, “We were thoroughly impressed with everything we saw at the open day. The staff are qualified and professional, but very warm and open. Our son has done reasonably ‘okay’ in public primary school here. However, he would have been due to start secondary school in September

and we feared he would be lost in the system. At Willow, the classes are small, he will have individual attention and the curriculum great. We are so happy we found Willow and are excited for our son, and for his future.” The building itself is new, clean and bright and has been installed with state of the art learning tools such as interactive touch screen whiteboards and more. Each classroom is air-

conditioned – a simple yet vital consideration for learning on hot days. A ‘school dinners’ service is also on offer and with multicultural, international cuisine on offer with lots of healthy options, we almost wish we were back at school ourselves to we could tuck in! Speaking to the staff and management of the school, there is an evident passion for education and a palpable feeling of excitement for the new school year. The primary school for the younger children, a colourful delight, is located on the lower level of the school building while secondary children will use the upper floor with a range of large air conditioned class rooms such as the science lab, computer room, languages room, maths room and more. Although the open day has come and gone, Amanda and the team are facilitating private tours for interested families. Places are limited in order to keep class sizes small but there are some spaces left in certain years for the forthcoming academic year. Bigger markets The Councillor for Markets, Víctor Bernabéu, has announced the expansion of all street markets across the municipality of Orihuela including the coastal markets in Playa Flamenca and Cabo Roig. “In all the markets, the trading area will be adapted to comply with the appropriate preventive measures, expanding the market area and adapting its measures to the safety regulations that were implemented during Phase 2 of de-escalation, specifically in terms of capacity and interpersonal distance,” explained Bernabéu. The Councillor for Markets has assured that "in phase 3 you can expand the products for sale such as shoe stalls, florists or kitchenware." Likewise, in larger markets such as those in Orihuela Costa, La Murada and the Tuesday and Saturday markets in Orihuela, they will continue in line with effective safety standards, with the use of masks by customers being mandatory. ‘In these cases, it is still difficult to include all the stalls due to the restrictions that the Ministry of Health imposes on all municipalities, such as capacity

control, the limitation to 50 percent in the third phase of the positions that usually participate in the markets and even the distance between stalls, makes it impossible for all stalls holders to participate in these 5 markets’ the Coucillor explained. Councillor Bernabéu said that he is aware of the serious situation that the textile sector is going through at the moment in the current state of alarm, but the ministerial regulations do not facilitate the

implementation of clothing in the city's markets. Bernabéu has transferred the desire of the Department of Markets is "to return to normality as soon as possible, but we are still in alarm and the Valencian Community continues in Phase 3 and we must adhere to the rules. Playa Flamenca and Cabo Roig markets will now feature: food, Toiletries, perfumery, take-away food, household items, flowers, plants and footwear.

The new normal The Spanish government has now confirmed what the ‘new normal’ really means, and it's not as bad as some people imagined. The 'New Normal' is not about how we will live the rest of our lives; it's more of a 'Phase 4', with stringent security and hygiene measures but no confinement, and will last until the SARS-CoV2 is considered 'beaten'. Beaten in this context means that a vaccine would have been found and made widely available in much the same way the autumn-winter influenza inoculation is administered annually. Or alternatively, when no active cases remain in the country, the risk of imported cases is minimal, and a further outbreak appears unlikely. So the good news is that the ‘new normal’ is not going to be forever – although it's likely to last longer than the standard two weeks of the four 'unlocking phases'. Current 'Phase 3' areas are hoped to be in 'New Normal' by 22nd June, and those still on 'Phase 2' should, all being well, be there by 29th June. A large dose of 'normality' has already arrived with businesses now open and less restriction on movement within the same province, and the 'New Normal' will restore it all except for the requirement to continue social distancing and wear masks. Although we will all be able to live much as we did before, the

general advice is to act as though everyone you see is a Covid-19 carrier! Masks are vital Compulsory mask-wearing will remain as it is currently – pretty much anywhere outside the home - even in the street or out in the countryside, on all public transport and inside all buildings open to the public, for anyone aged six or over, as well as in private modes of transport of up to nine seats unless all passengers and the driver are from the same household. Masks are not necessary where a minimum interpersonal distance of two metres can be 100 percent guaranteed – so in all reality, this is virtually impossible anywhere in public spaces, because someone could lean over you, or walk too close at any time. Therefore, you should carry a mask with you or wear it pulled down so you can pop it on at a split second's notice. Masks are also required in the workplace, although companies must where possible ensure staff are kept two metres apart at all times. The only exceptions are for anyone practising a sport which makes it impossible or unsafe to wear one, such as if it impedes breathing, and for anyone who has a health condition that makes it dangerous to wear a

mask, like a respiratory disorder. They are strongly recommended for children aged three to five inclusive, but are not safe to be worn by babies under three. As well as masks, in any situation where people may not be able to maintain social distancing at all times, other hygiene measures must continue in place – so the handsanitiser dispensers and plastic gloves at the entrance to supermarkets, and which are obligatory for all customers as soon as they walk in, will remain. Disinfecting of all practicable surfaces between every use will also be required to continue. Legal obligation to report Covid-19 will continue to be a health condition which must, by law, be immediately and urgently reported to authorities during the ‘New Normal’. In the event of any possible suspected case mandatory diagnostic testing will be carried out without delay. Regional governments will be given full jurisdiction to monitor and control movements of people, incidences of contagion and PCR testing, and will be legally required to guarantee that enough medical professionals are employed and on duty at any one time to ensure suspected cases can be tested and confirmed cases treated without delay.

This Week´s Movie Picks All the Money in the World Sunday 21st June – Channel 4, 10.00 pm

Rome, 1973. Masked men kidnap a teenage boy named John Paul Getty III (Charlie Plummer). His grandfather, Jean Paul Getty (Christopher Plummer), is the richest human in the world, a billionaire oil magnate, but he's notoriously miserly. His favorite grandson's abduction is not reason enough for him to part with any of his fortune. All the Money in the World (2017) follows Gail, (Michelle Williams), Paul's devoted, strong-willed mother, who unlike Getty, has consistently chosen her children over his fortune. Her son's life in the balance with time running out, she attempts to sway Getty even as her son's mob captors become increasingly more determined, volatile and brutal. When Getty sends his enigmatic security man Fletcher Chace (Mark Wahlberg) to look after his interests, he and Gail become unlikely allies in this race against time that ultimately reveals the true and lasting value of love over money.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them Saturday 20th June – ITV2, 7.20 pm

In mid-20s New York, Newt Scamander, the British young activist wizard, arrives in town, holding a mysterious leather suitcase which shelters a wide array of diverse and magical creatures that exist among us. Amid an already fragile equilibrium of secrecy, and the increasing disasters ascribed to the dark wizard, Gellert Grindelwald, Newt's precious suitcase will be lost--and to make matters worse--several creatures will manage to escape. Before long, this situation will catch Senior Auror Percival Graves' attention who will target Newt, in the background of an invisible, devastating, and utterly unpredictable menace that still wreaks havoc on 5th Avenue. In the end, is there a hidden agenda behind Graves' intentions; moreover, what will happen to the remaining fantastic beasts still loose in the streets?

Women more prone to binge drinking A study has revealed women are more prone to bringe drinking because of one key factor. Experts have found that females are more likely to be binge drinkers than their male counterparts thanks to fluctuating hormones that trigger a buzz from alcohol. The female sex hormone oestrogen is thought to respond to booze by releasing dopamine in the brain, a chemical that gives us feelings of happiness and pleasure. In a study conducted on mice, US neuroscientists found that female rodents with high levels of oestrogen experienced a rise in dopamine levels triggered by alcohol. However, when oestrogen levels were lowered in the female mice, the buzz from the alcohol was less prominent. Psychiatrist at the University of Illinois Amy Lasek, who

conducted the study, explained that the findings indicate that oestrogen means women can be more vulnerable to addictive substances like alcohol, something that can lead to dangerous health issues. “These results indicate that different brain mechanisms cause

binge drinking in females and males. This is important because it means that different approaches might be needed to reduce binge drinking in men and women. “If alcohol drinking is higher

during times when oestrogen levels are elevated, this can contribute to both the health risks of alcohol drinking and increase the likelihood of developing severe alcohol drinking problems,” she said of the study’s findings, published in the journal of Neuroscience. “Women more rapidly transition from problematic alcohol drinking to having an alcohol use disorder and to suffer from the negative health effects of alcohol, such as increased cancer risk, liver damage, heart disease, and brain damage,” Lasek said. The research also suggests that a drug which blocks oestrogen receptors, such as one used for fighting breast cancer, may help beat alcoholism in women.

Lowfat and organic are now top choices Nearly half of Spain's residents have suddenly become more health-conscious in terms of their diets in the past year, according to recent research – although it is too early to say whether two months in lockdown have undone all their hard work. An average of 44 percent say they consume far less fast food, processed food and sugary food than they did in 2018 – although a small percentage admitted they ate more of these. Ready meals and processed food consumption went down in 42 percent of cases, cakes and sweets in 46 percent, and fast food in 44 percent. Different age groups were studied, and it was found that in the over-65s, only between 1 percent and 3 percent bought more fast food, ready meals and high-sugar produce, whilst those who had significantly cut down their consumption of these accounted for between 46 percent and 54 percent. Those who had least reduced less-nutritious choices were – perhaps surprisingly – the 18-34 age group, the ones who, in other

research, have been found more likely to opt for a vegan, vegetarian or pescatarian diet. In keeping with that, it was the younger adults who were found to have most increased their purchases or consumption of healthier types of food, such as fresh produce and organic goods – between 21 percent and 32

percent - whilst among those over 65, only 18 percent said they had moved more towards the more typically 'recommended' products. Spain has long been famed for its 'Mediterranean diet', which has been proven to extend long-term health and contribute towards a longer life – fresh fruit, vegetables and salads, grilled oily fish, nuts and seeds, and olive oil – although in recent years, the

trend had appeared to be declining and obesity and dietrelated health conditions on the rise; in fact, in 2013, as many as 40 percent of children and 60 percent of adults were above the recommended weight for their height or body-mass index, if not actually clinically obese. However, the year leading up to the dawn of the 2020s seemed to bring an aboutturn: According to the WIN World Survey, residents in Spain eat slightly healthier than the global average. The same research was carried out in 40 countries in every inhabited continent, and it was found that between 12 percent and 14 percent of the planet's population overall consume more fast food, processed food and sugary produce than a year ago, whilst between 37 percent and 41 percent have cut down on all three. Spain is said to be similar in its figures to the European average for reduction in intake of lessadvisable foodstuffs, and worldwide, there were no great differences seen between males and females.

Mercadona trolley manoeuvre enforces social distancing

www.costablancapeople.com

OPINION: DON’T AIRBRUSH HISTORY Don’t airbrush history by destroying, damaging or removing statues. Let’s use this giant wave of public anger as a golden opportunity for good. There is good and bad in everyone – the only difference is that in some people the balance is for good, in others the balance goes the other way. That was seen even in Jesus...but more of that later. All the statues around Britain and worldwide have been erected to commemorate the good side of the person, while ignoring anything bad the person did.

If you have visited Mercadona in recent days you might have seen a simple manoeuvre that staff are asking customers to use to ensure social distancing in the queue – turning your trolley back to front. The backwards trolley rule is a new measure to ensure the safety distance with the customer in front and with the cashier. Queuing this way, customers can still place purchases on the conveyor belt and also respect the two meters distance. Twitter users across Spain were quick to see the funny side of the new rule. One said “Mercadona cashiers have scolded me more this week than my parents have my whole life.” Another said “The Mercadona cashier makes me more nervous than the driving instructor with all the turning of the trolley!”

This is nothing more than hypocrisy. The likes of Churchill and Nelson saved Britain and it’s absolutely right that they should be remembered. But if those huge greats from the past did wrong then that should be remembered too. So, instead of disposing of our statues, or putting them in museums, why not put them back on their plinths and on one side of the plinth remember all the good things that person did, and on the other record the bad things. That way future generations who pass the public statues could read the good the commemorated person did while balancing that with the bad side. Ghastly as it is for us to think about it now, you and me and all people in Britain have, in some way, benefited from the slave trade. Without it Britain would not be one of the top ten wealthiest nations in the world and we wouldn't have had the millions from super rich slave traders and

land-owners for public buildings and to institutions. So it is fitting to say we owe a great debt of gratitude for the blacks who suffered great hardship, cruelty and death in the hands of traders and landowners of the 17th and 18th centuries. If you haven’t watched some of the heart-wrenching films showing what slaves went though then you should – and if it doesn’t bring you to tears nothing would. I think Germany was wrong in removing all the statues of Hitler at the end of WW2. He and his ghastly band of Nazis should be on statues with details of their atrocities recorded below, especially to the Jews and races the Nazis believed inferior. That way history would not be airbrushed or forgotten and would be a poignant reminder for

future generations to be very wary of who you elect into power! I mentioned Jesus earlier. He committed an act of vandalism when he ran amok in a temple when he saw money lending going on...with the church no doubt benefiting financially from the transactions. His motives may be right but his actions were wrong – in just the same way as the vandals who commit crimes in pursuit of a cause. As a human race we are better than all this. We cannot erase history, we have to learn from it and teach the next generation to do better than we have. That way we can all lead better lives. Lockdowns save over 3 Antichild abuse bill million lives in Europe About 3.1 million deaths linked to the coronavirus have been prevented due to lockdowns and strict quarantine measures across several European countries, according to a study by Imperial College London. The drastic measures to stop the spread of the coronavirus, such as the closing of shops, businesses, schools and the hospitality industry as well as asking people to stay indoors as much as possible were implemented in February and March in most countries. The study by Imperial College London published in scientific journal Nature, wanted to calculate the impact of these lockdowns in 11 European countries: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Their calculation started on 24th February and ran until 4th May, when most countries started gradually lifting their lockdowns. By that time, approximately 130,000 deaths had been recorded in those countries as a result of the virus. “This data suggests that

without any interventions, such as lockdowns and school closures, there could have been many more deaths from Covid19,” said researcher Samir Bhatt. In total, around 3.2 million people would have died by 4th May if the governments had not imposed restrictions, according to the researchers’ calculations. As the official death toll of these countries is about 130,000, the

lockdowns saved approximately 3.1 million lives. The number of infections avoided by the quarantine measures was also calculated, by following the evolution of the Rnumber, (reproduction number), which indicates how many people are infected by someone who already has the virus. “Our model suggests that the measures put in place in these countries in March 2020 were successful in controlling the

epidemic by driving down the reproduction number and significantly reducing the number of people who would have been infected by the virus,” he added. Before the lockdowns started, the R-number for those countries were well above 1, meaning that one infected person infected many others each time, allowing the virus to spread rapidly. By 4th May, all countries had managed to bring that number below 1, meaning that an infected person infects less than one other person, indicating that the epidemic is on its way back. “However, it is not true that this is almost over. We are only at the beginning of this pandemic,” said researcher Seth Flaxman. As the measures are gradually being relaxed, there is a risk that the number of infections will rise again. “This tells us to be very careful, and not to let go too much at once, because then you will not have any control anymore,” said researcher Axel Gandy. “We have to be very slow and careful, so that we can turn back the relaxations if it turns out that it does not work,” he added.

The Spanish Cabinet has approved a draft bill setting out far-reaching protection measures for children and teenagers at risk of abuse. The draft bill - which contains elements of prevention, early detection, protection and reparation for victims of violence - will now start making its way through parliament. Government sources said they will seek fast-track approval. The new legislation will be known as the “Rhodes Law,” in recognition of campaigning by British concert pianist James Rhodes in defence of children’s rights. The draft bill extends the statute of limitations on the most serious crimes committed against minors, introduces protocols to be followed by

schools as well as sports and leisure centres where minors are present, and makes changes to judicial procedures. Violence against children is largely invisible, say children‘s defence organisations. Half of all reports of sexual abuse were against minors, according to the latest available data. In 2018, 38,000 minors were the victims of some criminal act. When Pedro Sánchez of the PSOE reached power in June 2018, one of his first pledges was to get child abuse legislation passed. The draft underwent a first Cabinet reading in 2018, and by the time the coalition government was formed, it had already been reviewed by relevant authorities such as the General Council of the Judiciary. But further

parliamentary progress has been recently delayed by the coronavirus pandemic. One of the most relevant changes introduced by the draft bill is the longer statute of limitations on the most serious crimes against minors, including sexual abuse and aggression. The time limit for filing legal action will start to run when the victim turns 30 years old, not 18 as is currently the case. Since the time period expires in five to 15 years, victims will be able to take action until the age of 45 for the most serious crimes, instead of 33. Experts note that this is an essential step because adults who have been abused as children often take a long time realizing what happened due to memory repression.

Best exercises for anxiety If you suffer from depression or anxiety, you know that in some specific moments, the last thing you may feel like doing is moving your body - but exercise can play a key role in managing your symptoms, thanks to the powerful link between your physical and mental health. Lockdown has left many of us feeling anxious and taking back control of your daily routine can help relieve some of those fears. Set time aside each day to exercise and if possible do this outdoors. This will also help us to re-acclimatise to go back outside and spending time out of the home. Experts believe that adults should get a standard amount of weekly exercise. This roughly equates to 150 minutes (2 hours and 30 minutes) to 300 minutes (5 hours) of moderate-intensity exercise each week. However, be aware that when the type of exercise ramps up to vigorous-intensity exercise, those recommendations lower to 75 minutes (1 hour and 15 minutes) to 150 minutes (2 hours and 30 minutes). Clearly, it's important to incorporate exercise of any kind, into your routine, but there are also some exercises that may aid mental health better than others. Research suggests that these three activities in particular could help alleviate symptoms of depression, stress or anxiety. Running There's a reason you've heard time

the idea that being immersed in nature is good for your mental health. A 2015 study published in the journal Landscape and Urban Planning, for example, discovered that when young adults went on a 50-minute nature walk, they felt less anxious and had improved memory function.

and again that running is one of the best exercises for your health: It can torch calories, reduce food cravings, and lower your risk for heart disease. In fact, running for just five minutes a day might even help you live longer, according to 2014 research. But running has also been shown to improve mood in a variety of ways too. Running causes lasting changes in our 'feel good' neurotransmitters serotonin and norepinephrine, both during and after exercise. What's more: The repetitive motions of running appear to have a meditative effect on the brain. Many runners focus on counting their paces, or the ‘thud’ on their foot on the pavement which has a calming effect and helps empty the mind.

The mental benefits can be especially powerful for people who suffer from depression. In a 2006 review published in the Journal of Psychiatry & Neuroscience, researchers found evidence that exercise can work in a similar way to antidepressants, alleviating major depressive disorder by promoting the growth of new neurons in the brain. Also good news is the fact that running may make it easier for you to fall asleep at night, which benefits your overall mental health by improving memory, lowering stress levels, and protecting against depression. Hiking To maximise the mental health

benefits of your sweat session, consider hitting the trails and local sierra’s. Nature has a calming effect on the mind and there is evidence that being around plants, trees, and especially decaying trees can help reduce anxiety because these plants emit chemicals to slow down the process of their decay, which appears to slow us down as well. In a 2009 study published in Environmental Health and Preventive Medicine, Japanese researchers sent participants to either a wooded or urban area. They found that those who'd taken a 20-minute "forest bath" (a walk in the woods), had lower stress hormone levels than the participants who had been in a city. Newer research seems to reinforce

Yoga In a small 2007 study published in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, all of the study's participants who had taken yoga classes experienced "significant" reductions in depression, anger, anxiety, and neurotic symptoms. The findings led the researcher to recommend yoga as a complementary treatment for depression. In 2012, another group of researchers conducted a review of trials, published in Alternative Medicine Review, examined the effects of yoga on anxiety and stress. In 25 out of the 35 studies, subjects experienced a significant decrease in stress and anxiety symptoms after starting yoga. The great thing about yoga is that besides the stretching and core strengthening, there is a tremendous focus on breathing, which helps to slow down and calm the mind. In fact, experts believe that yoga's focus on the breath is especially beneficial for mental health, because it's difficult to feel anxiety when you're focused on calmly breathing deeply.

She is being spoilt I am concerned about my niece. A lot of the attention is poured on her younger sister who is very demanding. My sister dresses the girls exactly the same even though there is six years between them. This is to appease the younger girl who makes a big fuss if she isn't wearing older clothes like her sister. These sorts of things happen all the time, and the younger one even has 'happy birthday' sung to her, on her 'sister's' birthday because she cries if she's left out. I mentioned this once and pointed out that everyone gets their own birthday, and surely the attention should be on the person whose birthday it is, but I was shot down and told to mind my own business.

Is she being disloyal? I am an older gent, divorced for a number of years. I have been seeing a woman for nights out. I don't feel there is anything romantically between us mainly because of the way she is, but I live in hope. Recently she told me she'd been seeing other men and I was a bit taken aback. I didn't expect that. She seems quite ok with the situation, but you had hoped she would remain loyal to you even though you are not a romantic couple. Dating when we are older can be a different thing entirely. When we are young we move on very quickly if we are not attracted to someone, but as older people we can find value in friendship and companionship. If you want to be more than just good friends then this revelation must feel like a deal-breaker. There's not going to be a good outcome for you in this, so you'll need to talk to her about where you stand. It may spell the end of this relationship for you unfortunately.

SALE Cultivating this kind of behavior is asking for trouble down the line. It may cause resentment between the sisters in later years. You've passed comment and it was unwelcome so you've done your best. You may be proved right one day and the younger girl may turn out to be troublesome, but you sadly you can't interfere.

Joe Wicks turns down healthy deal Joe Wicks has revealed he turned down a lucrative offer from the BBC to keep his PE Workouts online. The personal trainer known as The Body Coach - has become a global hit with his daily family exercise videos during lockdown and has raised over £500k for the NHS in advertising revenue from YouTube. Wicks, 33, said he had previously been turned down by Channel 4 when he approached them with an idea for a TV show. He added: “Fast forward to now, I've got Channel 4 asking me to stream these PE workouts live. I've got the BBC asking me to sign a contract. All these channels are now coming to me, and I've said, "Look, I want to do this on YouTube. I'm reaching more people. Why would I want to do it with you?” The fitness guru and heartthrob said he never intended to profit from PE With

Joe, which he began on the first Monday after the UK closed all schools as part of the government lockdown to combat the coronavirus pandemic. He said: “We didn't even consider it when we set out, which is why we quickly decided to donate that money to the NHS. It's a phenomenal amount of money and it just felt right, seeing as it was the community that built it. I didn't want people to think for a second that I had the intention of financially

benefiting from any of this.” Wicks lives with wife Rosie Jones and their two children Indie, 23 months, and Marley, six months, and admitted exercise had helped get through the stresses and strains of living in lockdown with a young family. He said: “If I'm stressed from dealing with two screaming babies, I have to exercise, because it brings me back down a peg. It also gives me energy and boosts my mood. No HIIT, though – it's all low intensity. I might do 20 minutes on the bike, maybe a few weights.”

....And sleep! Insufficient sleep is linked to a host of health problems, from depression to cardiovascular disease. Make sure you're falling asleep quickly so you can get a good night's rest. Here are a few simple tricks to avoid insomnia. Make a to-do list Worries keep people awake, and they don’t necessarily have to be negative worries. It could also be something positive you’re planning, like a trip or a big event with a lot of things you have to remember. Spending time during the day or earlier in the evening to sit and address those concerns may help - but if it’s too late for that, grab a notebook and try physically writing them down in a list for the next day. A recent study found that writing out a to-do list of future tasks helped people fall asleep nine minutes faster than people who wrote about tasks they’d already accomplished that day. It may seem counterintuitive that focusing on tomorrow’s responsibilities would lead to faster sleep, but researchers think the act of getting them down on paper helps clear the mind and stop rumination, at least temporarily. Get out of bed Staying in bed and trying to make yourself fall asleep is a bad idea, because it may train your brain to associate your bed and your bedroom with insomnia and worries - which will only make the problem worse over time. Instead, if you

lie awake for more than 20 to 30 minutes, get out of bed and do something else. If you’re trying to sleep and your brain’s not letting you, it could just be that you’re going to bed too early. Conventional wisdom may tell you that you need eight hours of sleep, but everyone is different, and some people’s bodies only demand six or seven. Staying up until you’re truly tired can help you find a sleep pattern that works best for you, as long as you can still wake up in the morning without a problem. Read a relaxing book You can’t stop your brain from thinking, but you can distract it by focusing on something neutral. Digital screens can disrupt sleep so try a good old fashioned physical book. It can help to read something that will get your mind off of whatever you’re worried about, but it should be something that’s not too stimulating and won’t get you worked up about something else! Reading in bed for 20 to 30 minutes is fine. But if you’re still awake after that, get out of bed and read somewhere else

until you feel ready to sleep. Listen to a podcast Podcasts or audiobooks can take your mind off your worries as well, and they can be good alternatives to reading if you don’t want to turn on a light or strain your tired eyes. You can use headphones to listen without disturbing your bed partner too.

The rules for podcasts and audiobooks remain the same as for books though. Find a topic that’s not too exciting or upsetting (lay off the heated political debates and murder mysteries, for example), and get out of bed and listen elsewhere - on a living-room couch, for

example - if you don’t drift off in bed right away. Or soothing sounds There’s not a lot of good research on sound therapy, but it may be worth a try. Download an app or consider buying a white noise machine to make those sounds you miss or love. These sounds might help create an environment that’s more conducive to sleep. They may even trigger memories of more relaxing times, and help take your mind off of whatever’s worrying you at the moment. Focus on breathing Another way to quiet your thoughts can be through simple breathing exercises. Your mind is surely going to wander back to other things, but the important thing is to keep bringing it back to your breathing, in and out. Deep, slow breathing can also slow your heart rate, which can be helpful if you’re anxious or worked up about something specific. You can do diaphragmatic breathing while lying in bed, without turning on a light or disturbing your partner. Try this

technique from sleep a specialist: Place one hand on your chest and the other on your belly. Inhale through your nose for about two seconds, feeling your belly expand, then push gently on your belly as you slowly exhale. Repeat. Try guided meditation Meditation and guided imagery can also help some people fall asleep. The idea again is to focus your thoughts on something other than the things you’re worried about. You might zero in on your breathing, for example, or imagine yourself walking on the beach or floating on a cloud. The more you practice meditation and guided imagery, the more effective it will become. You can use apps or YouTube videos to get started. Have a snack Having a large meal or a heavy snack before bed can slow down digestion and mess with your sleep, and having too much refined sugar too close to bedtime can definitely keep you awake. But getting up and having a light carbohydrate snack when you can’t sleep - a small serving of popcorn or wholegrain crackers, for example - may be helpful. Carbohydrates can promote the production of serotonin, which the brain needs to regulate sleep. If it’s been hours since you ate dinner, having a small snack may also keep your mind off of your empty stomach.

Choosing a Workshop The key to safer driving not only lies in the hands of those on the roads, but also in the hands of those responsible for carrying out work on our vehicles. Although the authorities do everything they can to close them down, there are still many garages and workshops that are not authorised to carry out any form of vehicle repair, and although many of them do a good job perhaps for less money, there are many who put all road users at risk. An illegal workshop is a fraudulent business model, often conducted on unlicensed premises, and often without the requisite regulatory permits, access to technical information on vehicles or the approval from vehicle manufactures to carry out repairs. They often also fail to comply with health and safety and environmental legislation and often carry out work without issuing invoices and without any form of guarantee. The frightening fact is that according to official sources, although no official figures exist, it is estimated that 20% of workshops across Spain are currently operating without the relevant licenses. A situation exacerbated by the economic crisis, which has led many consumers to

turn to these fraudulent workshops, attracted by lower prices, without being fully aware of the consequences. Inferior work, low price and unofficial parts, cheap labour and a lack of guarantee all undermine the rights of a consumer and is a practice punishable by law. On the other hand, legal and approved workshops have the necessary machinery and the right tools for repairs, access to the most up to date technical information for vehicle, they only use approved and traceable spare parts, guarantee repairs through the production of an invoice and provide continuous training for their employees. Therefore, only the legal establishments can ensure proper handling of the vehicle, resulting in increased road safety by reducing the risk of accidents. The technical information of the

vehicle provides the guidelines set by the manufacturer to ensure proper handling and repair, minimizing risks, ensuring optimal performance and extending its life. Only legally established workshops have access to this guide to ensure proper repairs of each model vehicle. The traceability of parts refers to garages being able to ensure the origin. In a legally established workshop, the consumer can be sure that the piece is approved, which is required for that type of car that has all manufacturer warranties. In illegal workshops where it is not traceable, installed parts can have very varied origins including from crashed or scrapped vehicles and

sometimes through theft. Due to the increasing complexity of vehicles it is essential that mechanics attend training courses that are held periodically that provide the guidelines for the proper repair of all types of vehicles. The mechanics are quickly outdated if they do not receive these courses, which only legal workers can have access to. The question of course is how does one identify an illegal workshop? Unfortunately, they are not always easy to recognise, but there are some tell-tale signs to look out for. A legal workshop will always provide a printed quote for work in advance and will also provide an invoice and guarantee afterwards. Illegal workshops are usually in places where they work behind closed doors, sometimes in garages of private homes, sometimes even in the street. The most important clue of all is that official and legally approved workshops have a nameplate granted by the Ministry of Industry and are required to display this plate at the property entrance. Illegal workshops will have no such accreditation displayed. The nameplate will display a variety of information relating to the work that can be done at the workshop. For example, the top part of the plate will display the type of work which can be done on the premises. A picture of a wrench indicates

UK Drivers Granted 7Month Photocard Licence Extension If you are a habitual resident in Spain, you should have already exchanged your driving licence for the Spanish equivalent. However, holders of a UK driving licence have been granted an extension by the DVLA. According to the UK Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency, DVLA, in order to make it easier for drivers who need to update their photocard licence with a new photo at the end of the 10 years validity, photocard driving licences that expire between 1 February 2020 and 31 August 2020 will be automatically extended for 7 months from the expiry date. Drivers do not need to take any action as the extension will be automatic and they will be sent a renewal reminder

before their 7-month extension ends. If a driver has already applied online to renew their photocard, this will be processed as normal. If they have already sent a paper application to renew their photocard there will be delays in processing, but the 7-month extension will apply in the meantime. This extension applies to the photocard renewal date. It does not apply where a driver’s entitlement to drive is due to expire if they wish to continue to hold a valid licence - they need to renew this in the normal way. Remember, this is only for UK licence holders who may be classed as visitors to Spain and in now way alters the need to exchange your licence if you live here in Spain.

Halfway up, on the left are icons which indicate areas of expertise, such as wheels and tyres, radiators, or injection engines for example. To the right, an image will be displayed if the workshop is authorised to repair motorcycles. Finally, at the bottom of the plate, there is a space which will display the provincial hallmark and the official registration number of the workshop as provided by the Ministry of Industry.

TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Let’s hope the restart matches turn out better than this restart column. I, like many of the players, feel massively out of practice, utterly lacking in match fitness and wondering if my contract will still be renewed at the end of the season. So much so I have convinced the editor that it would be best to put this rubbish out behind closed doors meaning nobody really knows it happened. Have you heard? There’s this thing called Project Restart and means actual English Premier League football, but not as we know it, is restarting this week. It’s been a while since we last spoke *checks notes* - 16th March it says here. When I last put pen to virtual paper, it was a forgone conclusion that Liverpool would be league champions by April Fool’s Day. And yet here we are, in a waiting to happen pub quiz question of ‘who led the league by 25 points in March and didn’t lift the title until the middle of June’. It’s going to happen - even the craziness of the last three months cannot stop King Kloppo lifting the trophy for much longer. It’s just a

shame that nobody will be in the stadium to see it. Of course, Liverpool fans have been left wondering for at least two of the last three months as to whether they’d be awarded the title, the season would be considered null and void, whether the Tory government would find a way of making sure they don’t win it at all or many other permutations for it all to boil down to the boring old need to win a couple of matches behind closed doors for it to be done. The season was becoming a bit of an anti-climax to any non-Liverpool fan before lockdown, let alone now. In fact, the more I think about it I am struggling to find any good reason for the Premier League to actually restart other than the fact I’d like to find a way we can keep Bournemouth in the league. After all, it’s no good for England’s brightest young manager to be in the Championship next season, is it? Nothing is going to keep Norwich up, Aston Villa still feel doomed and the break has just prolonged the inevitable for them. So that is pretty much the top and bottom sorted without the need to play in empty stadiums. It’s not that I don’t want football to return, far from it - it’s just having

watched the Bundesliga return it’s really not that exciting. The moment has gone a bit for me. Football with the sun shining? In England? It just feels weird. But, it’s back and I am sure once Man City have spanked Arsenal everything will feel vaguely new-normal. But what has been going on in my absence? Well, the FA have been trying to come up with a list of protocols that will no doubt fail miserably. Socially distant players on a football pitch? Let’s be honest, Kyle Walker barely managed it off the pitch when it was a legal requirement. That said, having seen some of his marking this season, this might be a convenient excuse for both him and John Stones. Jose Mourinho was moaning about a lack of time to spend actually training his players before lockdown, so you can only imagine his delight when he ‘bumped into’ Ndombele when out for his hourly walk a while back. Personally, I’ve been involved in a bit of sideline gambling - I’ve been backing Coronavirus to be a long-distant memory before Newcastle’s takeover goes through. I’m feeling confident, I have to say. Jack Grealish has been keeping his

Las Ramblas Golf Society And we’re back! (Well at Villamartin anyway) With the Las Ramblas course not due to reopen until early September most of us have been playing at Villamartin for the past two or three weeksand generally giving all our money to Graham Murray. A big thank you goes to all the staff at Villamartin who have made us feel very welcome. Monday saw us compete in our 1st ‘official’ team game since the Lockdown with a 1-2-3 Waltzer.Taking the honours, with a very respectable total of 87 points, were Nora Betts, Nigel Price and Lindsay Forbes. Hot on their heels, with 85, were Nick Campbell, Reg Akehurst and a very handsome local golf reporter! Whilst the course at Ramblas remains closed the terrace is open for business. Sergio and Alberto would certainly appreciate any support you can give them in these trying times. In Wednesday’s individual Stableford we witnessed a superb round of golf by Richard Connock. Playing off a handicap of 8 he managed to score 40 points which unsurprisingly took the top spot (He picked up 10 points on

the last 3 holes!) Second, with 38, was John Dobson and the bronze went to Mike Brentnall with 36. We rounded off the week on Friday with a ‘Yellow Peril’ plus the next best two scores to count. With 145 points John Dobson found himself in the money again together with Nigel Price, Ken Robertson and wife Liz. Just two points behind them were Mike Brentnall, John Shervell, plus John and Ellen Drakesmith. Given the strange circumstances under

which we are currently playing I was reminded of the saying; A ‘gimme’ can best be described as an agreement between two golfers, neither of whom can putt very well. Pues hasta la semana que viene Peter Reffell

speed off the mark in fine form since Villa’s last game. Seriously, if their skipper is as quick away from his man as he is from the scene of a crime in the next few games Dean Smith’s men have a serious chance of staying up. I worry for the day James Milner retires. He may not be as prominent in Liverpool’s starting XI as he once was but his social media game has been titlewinning in itself. Check out some of his ‘best-ever XIs’ recently and thank me later. A special mention has to go to Andre Gomes of Everton and his Tom Hanks impression. Gomes, who has probably had better eight-month stretches in his life, replicated Hanks on a desert island to an absolute tee. The action remained up north with Kevin de Bruyne as well. City’s midfield maestro needed a creative way to keep the thighs in shape, so enlisted the help of his daughters laying on his legs like deadweights letting KDB get his 50 reps in. That’s family dedication for you. Finally, John Egan made his feelings about James Maddison very clear after the Leicester schemer beat Sheffield United’s marauding central defender in one of the millions of FIFA tournaments that took place. Egan suggested he will ignore social distancing to ‘snap’ Maddison first chance he gets. Although

totally tongue-in-cheek, I would have not put it past the FA to charge Egan with the first-ever ‘bringing FIFA20 into disrepute’ charge. Now, I am sure we have all missed football during this massively weird period in history. Remember saying how you’d never moan about there being rubbish like Aston Villa vs Sheffield United to watch on TV? See how you feel by Thursday, eh? We are about to enter a world where there is Premier League football every single day until the 26th July. Predictions? Anyone who has followed me for the last few years know they are a pointless exercise but here we go. Top four: Liverpool, Man City, Leicester City, Man United Fifth and, therefore, League: Chelsea

Champions

Where will Mourinho finish? 8th. Relegated: West Ham, Villa and Norwich Naturally, none of the above will actually happen but I’d be amazed if even I could jinx Liverpool out of the title. Back next week if we get through this first week back unscathed...

Elche CF Kicks Off After Lockdown As the world of football starts to get back to the playing field, I am sure I can speak for every football fan that the time we have all spent within lockdown has been a life changing one. To be honest, football has become insignificant as we collectively carry on fighting this pandemic that has brought so much change to our daily lives. We are lucky to still be alive and will have the opportunity to remember those not so fortunate at the start of each game. Of course this was the case at the Martinez Valero in Elche on Friday evening. Elche CF started in 6th place, the final play off place, against lowly Extremadura UD who were 2nd from bottom. The game was played in what is the new normal empty stadium environment. The only recognition of the fans were the promotion available for season ticket holders to have a cardboard cut out of themselves in one corner of the ground. After the minute silence, the game kicked off. Watching via a TV instead of being in the stadium with our EuroTourGuide coach full of supporters, took a little getting used to. The lack of fans also effected Elche CF as the opening 20 minutes was all Extremadura. Along way from home on the border of Portugal, Extremadura seemed

more like the home team with many shots at goal, none of which caused Edgar too many problems. Against the run of play, the opening goal came on 22 minutes. Following a break down the right, young Escriche #20 delivered a pin point low

cross to the feet of Brazilian Jonothas #27 who simply could not miss from 2yds. That would be the highlight of the rest of the first half for Elche CF, who to be honest were outplayed. Pre Covid, Elche CF would often start the 2nd half by throwing away any lead that

they had gained, sadly this was still the case. In the 52nd minute Extremadura Capitan Bastos #4 cut inside to smash home the equaliser from inside the box, his first goal since the 2017/18 season! Elche CF continued to make hard work of a fixture they were expecting to win. Coach Pacheta tried to change the situation by using all of his 5 subs and the extra time allowed for the compulsory water break, both new Covid rules. Even the debutant Diego Bri and the legendary Nino, the club record goal scorer and now the oldest ever Elche player having celebrated his 40th birthday during lockdown, could not alter the result. At the time of going to print on Monday evening, the result of the Ponferrandia game was not yet know, but by the time the Costa Blanca People hits the streets on Tuesday morning, we will know the score. Let’s hope that Elche CF have returned to their pre Covid form and have held onto their play off position with a win away from home.
