Spain not out of the woods yet Spanish health officials are keeping close watch on new cases of Covid-19, a week after the State of Alarm was lifted by government. The Ministry of Health was dealing with at as many as twenty active outbreaks across Spain by the end of the first week of full de-escalation or what is being referred to as ‘The New Normal’. Officials seem to be keeping on top of the situation with ‘clusters’ of even four positive cases being treated as an outbreak and investigated vigorously. In fact, the Spanish Ministry of Health defines an outbreak as ‘a group of three or more infections with an epidemiological link’. The outbreak is considered active if there has been a transmission within the last 14 days. In more vulnerable situations – such as in nursing homes – just one positive case is considered an outbreak, even if the patient does not present any symptoms of Covid-19, due to the incredibly high level of risk and vulnerability associated with the environment and the people therein. Coordinating Spain’s health alerts is Fernando Simón who indicated that the fact Spain is reporting outbreaks “and not community transmission” is a positive sign. Simón also revealed that new cases are occurring in young people, meaning the disease is presenting milder symptoms and not transmitted as much.

See Main Advert on page 27

He did warn, however, that Spain needs to keep on top of logging and reporting outbreaks no matter how small - “an outbreak that escapes detection for longer could lead to community transmission”, he explained. Of the outbreaks currently under strict government observation, there are two which Simón describes as “of real concern”. One is a cluster of positive cases at a Red Cross refugee housing centre in Málaga and another is a series of positive cases among seasonal agricultural workers in the Huesca province. The Red Cross centre reported its first positive case of Covid-19 on the first day of ‘the new normal’ and swiftly the number of cases rose from one on Sunday, to 15 on Tuesday to almost 90 on Thursday. This cluster is the largest rise in cases recorded since the beginning of the de-escalation process began when the government has logged around 40 individual outbreaks across Spain. The centre tested all staff and migrant residents in a bid to contain the outbreak and it was decided to confine almost 100 people to the centre. A team of contact tracers has since been at work to track down possible contacts of those who live and work at the centre. Rumours had been circulating that the Málaga outbreak originated with the arrival of a boatload of immigrants last weekend. However, officials were keen to quash these rumours - especially since the first positive case detected at the centre was actually a Red Cross worker, and that the people who arrived to Spain by boat did not actually end up at the CAED centre in Málaga, nor did they have

Spain not out of the woods yet - Fernando Simón

any contact with staff or residents there. The Andalucían authorities have ruled out rolling the region back to a stricter phase of de-escalation, claiming that the outbreak is very much under control. Meanwhile, four districts in Huesca were moved back into Phase 2 when an outbreak of 12 positive cases was detected among seasonal fruit pickers there. Since the 12 cases were detected, the four districts were closely monitored and it is estimated that a total of 250 positive cases of Covid-19 have been identified – although 95% of the cases were asymptomatic. In Extremadura, a search and arrest order was issued for an individual – believed to be an undocumented migrant – who has been identified as the centre of an outbreak of 21 cases in a small town there. 54 people (including the 21 who tested positive) remain in self

isolation as an attempt to control the transmission of the virus. The man police are searching for arrived to Spain by boat at the end of May. He arrived on a small vessel which was carrying 20 other migrants and when intercepted on arrival, was taken to a housing shelter in Navalmoral de la Mata, the small town now suffering the outbreak. Officials from the humanitarian organisation which arranged the man’s transfer confirmed that he was not presenting any symptoms at the time of his arrival. Days later when a migrant who arrived on the same boat, but was housed elsewhere in Spain, tested positive for Covid-19, contact tracers began to track the other arrivals and the outbreak in Navalmoral de la Mata was discovered. Regional health chief for Extremadura, José María Vergeles, warned: “Those who believe that we are already free of the

virus, that we can lead normal lives without living alongside the virus, are wrong.” However, while caution is still paramount, there is some positive news in Spain. Asturias became the first ‘Covid19 free’ region of Spain having gone 14 days without registering a new case. According to reports from the Health Ministry, Asturias became the first Spanish region to surpass the 14 day barrier – an important benchmark. However, officials don’t hold out much hope that the figures there will remain at zero especially given that summer visitors are expected to arrive to the region. Madrid also reported its first day with no Covid-19 related deaths on Sunday. In a statement on Twitter, regional president Isabel Díaz Ayuso, announced that the death rate remained static on Sunday, saying it was “great news”.

See the park by the light of the moon

By the light of the moon is the tagline of the new series of nightwalks set to take place this summer in La Mata natural park. The ecotourism hikes begin again on Friday July 3rd and are incredibly popular across all nationalities living and holidaying in the area. The walks will take place every Monday and Friday throughout July and August, beginning at 8.30pm and lasting for around 4 hours. The aim of the scheme, arranged by the departments of Tourism and the Environment of Torrevieja town hall, is to highlight

the importance of Natural Park of the Lagunas de Torrevieja and La Mata – its heritage, history and environmental and cultural significance as one of the most important wetlands environments of the Valencian Community. Organisers advise participants to wear comfortable clothing, walking footwear and to bring water and a picnic or snack. A torch is also useful. The meeting point is the Visitor Centre at the entrance to the natural park and from there the guides will bring small groups through the park.

Participants will learn about the history of salt production, the importance of the natural park in terms of biodiversity and much more. You’ll learn about local birdlife and if you’re lucky will see or hear some of the resident owls. As the sky darkens, you’ll also learn about the constellations. Places can be booked online at http://turismodetorrevieja.com/ by hovering on the ‘naturaleza’ header and then clicking on ‘ecorutas’ where you’ll find an overview of the walks available, and the spaces available on each walk. Simply fill in the booking form to reserve your place for free.

Police take down one of Spain’s biggest arms trafficking networks National Police have dismantled one of the largest criminal networks involved in illegal arms trafficking in Spain. In the operation, carried out across 15 Spanish provinces, 21 people were arrested and a huge cache of weapons seized, including a C90 grenade launcher, two anti-tank mines, explosives, detonators and numerous firearms and ammunition. In the operation, carried out simultaneously across 15 Spanish provinces, 21 people were arrested. In addition, officers seized a total of 731 firearms, as well as 123 illegal weapons – some classified as weapons of war – explosive substances, detonators, hand grenades, more than 55,000 cartridges and various stolen documents which officers believed were to be used illegally. Seven workshops used for the modification of firearms were also shut down as part of the operation. National Police believe that the raids, which follow a year long investigation, have shut down one of the largest arms dealing networks in the country. Officers specialized in the fight against illegal arms trafficking arrested 21 people

for the alleged crime of possession and trafficking of illegal arms. During the 32 raids, carried out simultaneously, a total of 731 firearms were seized, including a number of especially dangerous automatic weapons. Buying and selling weapons through the post The investigation began more than a year ago when a crack team of detectives became aware of the existence of a person who, from his base in Malaga, was arms trading on the black market – buying and selling weapons and weapons parts. This individual had an extensive network of contacts at a national level. Experts in the illegal trafficking of firearms found that those involved used postal parcel services to surreptitiously send and receive weapons parts, which they later used to rehabilitate or assemble a variety weapons. However, when the sale involved weapons of war, transactions took place in person with security protocols in place. More than 200 police officers were involved in the raids which were carried out simultaneously in Madrid (3), Burgos

(1), Toledo (2), Cuenca (2), Malaga (4), Valencia (1), Gerona (1), Tarragona (3), Murcia (2), La Coruña (1), Lugo (7), Orense (1), Vizcaya (1), Asturias (2) and Barcelona (1). All of those arrested had the skills and knowledge necessary to make modifications to firearms, seven of them having clandestine workshops suitable for the transformation and rehabilitation of firearms. During the raids, officers verified that these workshops had specific tools and accessories for the modification of weapons, such as lathes, milling machines and precision tools. Another activity unveiled during the operation was the transformation of semiautomatic firearms into fully automatic weapons. This investigation is one of the largest operations against illegal arms trafficking carried out in Spain to date. Although the nationwide organization has been shut down, investigators are now trying to find out possible international connections of those arrested. Arms trafficking is a priority for agencies such as EUROPOL, with officials across Europe working together towards the prevention of arms trafficking by organised crime gangs and terrorist organisations.

residents have heavily criticised their public for ignoring and flouting the safety measures – such as huge crowds on the beaches in Southend and Bournemouth, and unmasked crowds drinking to celebrate Liverpool's Champions' League win. Tremlett echoes president Pedro Sánchez's argument that 'Spain had Europe's strictest Coronavirus lockdown', referring to 'children housebound for weeks and Army patrols to enforce it', which has 'produced a dramatic tail-off' and led to the country's

mortality rate 'returning to normal' on 10th May. “It's important to acknowledge that Spanish success is the result of an exhausting exercise in nationwide solidarity among 47 million people,” Tremlett says. He says that unlike in the UK, Spanish people did not live up to 'the stereotype that they are rowdy, rule-breaking anarchists' but displayed 'fortitude and discipline' and continue to be, he says, a 'nation of compulsive handwashers and distance-respecters', and that 'almost everyone' out and about in Madrid wears a mask.

The World Health Organisation has praised Spain for its 'swift control' of new outbreaks, acting quickly to isolate and test and, if necessary, impose movement restrictions, whilst British national broadsheet The Guardian has described the 'exemplary' way Spaniards behaved during lockdown and are continuing to act now 'New Normality' has been declared. Although the European continent is still notifying an average of 700 deaths a day and around 20,000 new cases of Covid19, Spain is handling it exceptionally well, says the WHO's regional manager Hans Kluge. On Twitter, he wrote: “Staggering progress in Spanish Covid response guided by health minister Salvador Illa – 1 percent positivity rate, 60 percent of new patients through contact-tracing, testing capacity increased. Vigilance towards mini-outbreaks in the new reality. Full support by WHO Europe,” and includes emojis of clapping hands. His view are supported by Guardian writer Giles Tremlett, who lives in Madrid and has experienced Spanish lockdown first-hand. In an article titled 'Spain squashed Coronavirus', Tremlett raises concerns that British tourists will 'undo all that hard work', given that they are now permitted entry to the country but that many UK

RESERVED A PROPERTY TO BUY & NOW YOU’VE GOT COLD FEET? Buying your dream home in Spain is an exciting time. It not only gives you so much to look forward to after being in limbo for such a long time, but is also a great investment for your financial future. If you’re one of the many people that have reserved a property to buy, without seeing it in person, you may be questioning your own judgement by way of asking yourself “what have I done?” This feeling you maybe experiencing doesn’t actually mean there’s something wrong with your purchase, or that you shouldn’t continue. It’s just your mind playing Devil’s advocate, making you question your own judgement. Meaning you’re just getting cold feet! Here’s 3 points on how to make sure your fearsare put to rest, so you can make this journey an exciting one, and not one to be afraid of. 1. If you’re unsure how much your legal costs will be, make sure those questions have already been answered, long before you’ve even put your offer forward. No-one wants to receive a hefty bill after they’ve completed, so get that “piece of mind” information, from the start.

2. If you’re nervous you could be paying too much, think about other homes you’ve already seen in your price range. Ask your Real Estate Agent to show you comparable home prices if necessary. This will reinforce your decision and prove that you’ve agreed on a great price. Let those nervous butterflies you’ve had, change to excitement and allow them to carry you through your purchase! 3. If you’re in the mindset of “maybe a better house will come on the market,” you need to stop second-guessing yourself. Don’t you remember how many homes you’ve looked at online, before you fell in love with the one you’ve chosen? You need to give yourself a pat on the back, and remind yourself of all the online research you did upfront. And, if you’re still afraid you’re going to miss out on an even better home, ask yourself how happy you are with the property you are buying, on a scale of 1 to 10. An 8 or higher, you’re making a great purchase. Think about this…. You could be looking for a year or two and never find a perfect 10. So stop doubting your decision, look to the future with your head held high, and make your purchase a happy adventure. I’m sure you’re choice will be perfect! Three migrant boats intercepted in Alicante and Guardamar Reports on Monday morning indicated that police and the Red Cross were providing assistance to around twenty people who were rescued at sea off the coast of Guardamar and Alicante on Sunday. Three boats are believed to have been intercepted early on Sunday morning, carrying a total of 23 people attempting to reach Spanish landfall. The first boat was spotted just before 7am on Sunday when Guardia Civil received reports of a small vessel adrift around 50 metres off the coast of Cabo de las Huertas. A patrol brought eight adults ashore and a maritime rescue boat towed the vessel. The eight people were brought to the police station for further processing.

Just after 7am, a second boat was spotted off the coast of Guardamar with seven people on board and again, just hours later at 10am, another boat was intercepted with eight people on board. Guardia Civil officers from Torrevieja and Guardamar attended the scene to process and register the fifteen people.

The Red Cross is providing treatment to the people who are being held in Alicante and Torrevieja. Meanwhile, officers are trying to establish the identities of the individuals including confirming their country of origin in order to begin the process for repatriation.

Underage driver arrested in Elche A 16 year old has been arrested in Elche for driving illegally. The youngster is believed to have taken to the wheel of the car because his father, in the passenger seat at the time of the arrest, was three times over the legal limit. Local police indicated that both the teen and his father were released from custody after making statements at Elche police HQ.

The arrest took place on Saturday when a police beach patrol at Playa Arenales realised that a passing driver looked very young. When a motorcycle officer pursued and stopped the vehicle, suspicions were confirmed when the driver turned out to be 16 years old and his father, the passenger, had a blood alcohol level three times the limit for driving.

There is a greater than usual police presence around Elche beaches at the moment, due to the manner in which the town hall is controlling numbers of beachgoers. A parking limit is in place with users asked to limit their parking time to four hours in order to avoid over congregation at the beach and to ensure everyone can have a chance to enjoy the facility.

King and Queen to visit Costa Blanca King Felipe and Queen Letizia will visit Benidorm on July 3rd to meet heads of the tourism industry there. The royal couple are on tour of Spain’s autonomous regions and have already visited Gran Canaria and Palma de Mallorca. In the Valencian Community, the couple will visit Valencia itself as well as the heart of the Costa Blanca’s tourism industry, Benidorm. The couple are on a whistle-stop tour around the regions to find out firsthand the effects of the Covid19 pandemic and the State of Alarm which was in place in Spain from 14th March until 21st June. Official sources confirmed that the monarchs would attend a meeting with businesspeople from the tourism sector in the Alicante province on the morning of their visit. In the afternoon, they will preside over an innovation and design awards ceremony in Valencia. After the royal visit was revealed, political party Compromís write to the monarchs to request that during their visit to Benidorm they meet with a group of domestic workers known as Las Kellys. Compromís spokespersons Mónica Oltra, Joan Ribó, Águeda Micó and Cristina Rodríguez signed the letter in which they say that they want the royal couple to see the reality of

King Felipe and Queen Letizia

the situation in the tourism reliant region, and to know, “the precarious situation suffered by groups such as housekeeping", in addition to meeting with entrepreneurs in the tourism sector. The letter also claims that Benidorm is in "one of the regions with the highest poverty rate in our territory," according to a statement by Compromís. The Valencia based coalition party, Compromís, hope that the heads of state meet with the association of "Las Kellys de Benidorm", which last week appeared before the Congress of Deputies. Spokesperson for Las Kellys Yolanda García explained "how this group is one of those suffering the ravages of the crisis the most.” In her congressional appearance, García, listed various

workers’ demands. García pointed out that the workloads, which were already excessive, have now been increased due to all the hygiene and safety measures required of the establishments. She also pointed out the need for legislation that regulates the contracting of essential services through subcontractors. In their proposal they want the outsourcing of works or services necessary for the operation of the company's own activity to be prohibited. García explained “it is not understood that a hotel hires cleaning services from another company”, the association considers that the work they carry out is fundamental for the business and the hotel itself should hire them. ERTE is extended Cultural night ERTE time tours The government, unions and employers have clinched a deal to extend Spain’s furlough scheme, ERTE, to 30th September. Under the system, companies suffering losses from the Covid-19 pandemic and the confinement measures can temporarily send home workers or reduce their working hours. Thousands of businesses have filed for ERTEs since a lockdown was introduced

in mid-March, but the scheme was due to end on 30th June, approximately coinciding with the end of restrictions.

The Councillor for Culture, Mar Ezcurra, has presented a program of night cultural walks that will take place on Thursdays in July and August in Orihuela. The guided tours will visit places of cultural interest, providing information

Local fruit farmers scammed A 49-year old Italian from the province of Almeria has been arrested following a year-long investigation into a fruit scam targeting farmers in local towns including Almoradi and Callosa de Segura. His 48year-old Spanish accomplice was arrested in the Alicante-Murcia border town of Santomer. The scam targeted small-scale fruit farmers and it thought to have reaped more than 143,000e for the dodgy duo. The con involved the pair getting to know respected farmers in small towns before

using their reputation to influence new victims. The alleged scammers would offer payment for fruit, mainly oranges, via cheques which were from closed or empty bank accounts. Guadia Civil from Torrevieja spent over a year tracking down the con artists, which led to the recent arrests. Officers uncovered a stream of money moving across the country, as well as into Europe and the money laundering investigation is still in progress.

and interesting facts. This will include: Orihuela Palm Grove, the second largest palm grove in Europe, the historic centre of Orihuela, the Miguel Hernández House Museum, the Diocesan Seminary of San Miguel and the Embergoñes Tower, among other special places. The cultural walks will begin at 8:30pm and are completely free of charge. In order to guarantee all the sanitary security measures, the use of a mask will be required during the tour, as well as prior registration, since each of the routes will have a maximum capacity of 20 people. Municipal Civic Centres reopen to the public The Mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, has announced the reopening of the Municipal Civic Centres, which have remained closed to the public after the health crisis caused by Covid-19. Mayor Bascuñana explained: "After the State of Alarm ended and we have entered the new normality and in response to the demand of different groups that carry out their activities, workshops and meetings in these centres, we have decided to reopen them, complying with all security measures and guaranteeing public health and safety. ” Preventive measures have already been installed in the different Civic Centres, including Orihuela Costa, such as disinfecting stations, indicators for maintaining the minimum safety distance, hydro-alcoholic gel dispensers and partitions.

Consternation over new British passport colour It seems that as far as the new British passport is concerned black is the new blue and the great British public are not happy about it. It was to be a symbol of the UK as a newly independent nation, cut loose from the tyranny of Brussels and

EU bureaucrats demanding bananas are a certain shape. The return to traditional pre-1991 bluecoloured passports to mark Brexit would, advocates said, be a reminder to the world – or at least to British citizens

queuing at new European border controls – that the country was free to do as it pleased. “Happy Brexmas!” tweeted Nigel Farage when the scheme to replace the burgundy documents was announced in 2017. “I cannot wait to travel on one,” added Priti Patel later. There is, it seems, just one issue. As the new passports begin to be received by increasing numbers of people, a growing consensus appears to be emerging: they’re black. “New passport arrived this morning,” tweeted one recipient. “Definitely black and not even remotely blue.” The verdicts come as the new documents – which were first unveiled in March – have started to be sent out by the Home Office.

“The passport is black,” another tweeter noted. “Really poor quality, flimsy and thin, and the edges are peeling.” Experts are also less than convinced that the booklets are not several shades north of midnight. Craig Burston, senior lecturer in graphic design at the London College of Communication, added he felt it was charcoal: if it’s really blue, he said, “it must be the most apologetic shade of blue they could find”. The Home Office has declined to specify the exact shade used.

Symphonies for plants

Clothing stalls allowed back on street markets The Councillor for Markets, Víctor Bernabéu, has authorised the participation of the textile sector in all markets across the municipality of Orihuela. The Councillor is keeping his promise to the representatives of the local clothing trade he met with last week and said, ‘now we know the resolution of the Ministry, we can proceed to the total de-escalation of all the markets of Orihuela’.

Barcelona’s Liceu orchestra played a concert to an unusual audience. Rather than humans, the theatre was filled by potted plants. The concert took place the day after the State of Alarm ended in Spain and was the brainchild of conceptual artist Eugenio Ampudia. The unique show saw 2292 seats in the auditorium occupied by plants rather than people. The concert was livestreamed on the internet around the globe as the UceLi string quartet perofmred Puccini’s Crisatemi (Chrysanthemums) for the plants which were brought in from local nurseries. After the concert, the plants were donated with a certificate from the artist to 2,292 people who have been on the healthcare frontlines, in recognition of their work during the pandemic.

The Liceu, one of the largest and most important opera venues in the world, was delighted to host the symbolic act that had the aim of highlighting the value of art, music and nature. "We thought that we had to share with our audiences all across the world this symbolic way of showing that we as an audience were deprived of being audiences," said Víctor García de Gomar, artistic director of the Liceu. "All of us were quite excited, a little bit nervous. It's funny too, everybody had a smile during all the preparations. "The simple act of making sound, having music back in the hall was a reaffirmation of life." Humans should be able to enjoy performances at the Liceu once again in September.

Therefore starting last Thursday (25th June) the full opening of Orihuela street markets can go ahead, in line of course with the legal prevention measures against COVID-19. These include the reduction to a one-meter distance between each street vendor’s stall, which has allowed additional traders to rejoin the markets. So just in time to snap up those summer dresses, shorts and shirts, clothing can now be found locally at: Campoamor Market, Avenida de la Vega Market, Playa Flamenca Market, La Murada Market and Marqués de Molins Avenue Market.

Tough time predicted for Spanish economy Spain and Italy will be the developed countries to take the biggest economic hit from the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, according to new figures released by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Spain’s output is projected to shrink by 12.8 percent this year, the biggest decline since the Spanish Civil War of 1936-1939. Italy’s economy is also expected to retreat 12.8 percent, with France following closely with a drop of 12.5 percent. Spain’s anticipated output for 2020 is now nearly five percentage points lower than what the IMF was projecting in April. On the other hand, in 2021 the Spanish economy is expected to rebound by 6.3 percent, up from 4.3 percent in April. The IMF recently released its latest World Economic Outlook (WEO) update, which reviews its April forecast downward because “the Covid-19 pandemic has had a more negative impact on activity in the first half of 2020 than anticipated, and the recovery is projected to be more gradual than

previously forecast.” Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez alluded to the IMF report, saying that “the economic forecasts are predicting a dark horizon.” The anticipated 12.8 percent contraction of Spain’s economy represents the biggest drop since the Civil War, when output declined by 26.8 percent. It is even bigger than the accumulated contraction during the years that

Spain struggled through the Great Recession that began in 2008. To put it in perspective, the contraction represents around €160 billion, calculated in terms of gross domestic product (GDP) at the close of 2019. This is more money that the Spanish state paid out in 2019 on public pensions. In 2021, the Spanish economy is expected to advance 6.3 percent, the same as Italy and Britain. Only France, with a 7.3 percent jump in

output, will outperform them, according to the latest IMF forecast. Part of the reason why the Spanish economy is expected to suffer so intensely is due to confinement measures that were stricter here than in other countries, which also meant that the economy reopened later. But there are structural reasons as well, given that over 95 percent of Spain’s business fabric is made up of small and mediumsized businesses that had a harder time surviving the threemonth lockdown than large companies. And tourism, which contributes 12 percent to GDP, ground to a halt during this time. The Bank of Spain recently estimated that the Spanish economy contracted by as much as 34 percent during the first two weeks of confinement, compared with the euro zone average of 21 percent. The services sector retreated 50 percent, while the category that encompasses commerce, transportation and the hospitality industry sank by 71 percent.

Delayed diagnosis exacerbates digestive diseases According to specialists at Quirónsalud, since the state of alarm began, the fear of going to the emergency room or consulting a specialist has delayed the diagnosis and treatment of major diseases such as appendicitis, cholecystitis or diverticulititis, which then present more advanced conditions requiring complicated surgery. Among the digestive disorders most affected during the confinement period was colorectal cancer, says, Dr. Blas Flor-Lorente, head of Digestive Surgery and Surgical Oncology at Quirónsalud Hospital in Valencia, “The delay in performing colonoscopies has prevented these kinds of tumours from being diagnosed early, which leads to a delayed surgical treatment with a poorer prognosis.” Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of death in Europe and has the highest mortality rate of digestive cancer. “Colorectal cancer screening programmes are key as a method for improving survival data”, says Dr. Pedro Bretcha, head of Digestive Surgery and Surgical Oncology at Quirónsalud Alicante and Torrevieja Hospitals, “so mortality from delay may be higher than that caused by Covid-19. This is particularly important in the area of digestive system as one in three cancer-related deaths are caused by digestive diseases.” Some forecasts suggest that deaths due to delayed diagnosis and treatment of cancer patients will lead to more years of life lost than the virus

itself. As Dr.Bretcha, explains, “In the UK it is estimated that every week about 2,500 people are not being diagnosed due to lack of referral to specialists and another 400 are not being diagnosed through population-based screening.” Dr. Flor-Lorente, advises patients who present rectal bleeding, alterations when going to the bathroom (diarrhoea or constipation) sustained over time, swelling or abdominal pain, as well as any other pelvic or abdominal ailment that they had not perceived before, to consult a specialist for an assessment. Surgical operations with all the safety measures The surgical departments of Quirónsalud Torrevieja and Valencia hospitals have adapted to the new reality and adopted new safety measures for both the patient and surgical care personnel. All patients who are going to be operated for any procedure go through a rigorous epidemiological and clinical screening, as well as a PCR test prior to the operation to rule out an active infection. If there is any doubt, an additional study such as a chest CT scan and blood tests are carried out. In scheduled surgeries with positive PCR, the operation will be suspended and will be performed when the patient is fit and has overcome the infection. If surgery is urgent, a serological test for checking antibodies generated against the virus as well as a chest CT scan are performed prior to surgery. If the patient is positive, if an effective alternative to surgery exists, it will be chosen in order to avoid complications in the post-

operative period. If this is not possible, all measures will be taken to carry out the procedure safely. Quirónsalud, safe hospitals against Covid-19 Quirónsalud hospitals have obtained the COVID-19 Safe Protocol certification by Applus+, after ensuring that both hospitals are protected and controlled areas adhering with the most demanding standards against the coronavirus pandemic, mitigating the risk of infection at their facilities to the maximum for both their personnel and patients. To obtain this certification - which recognizes and certifies the work and commitment of both hospitals to fight Covid-19 - the management has strived to implement and monitor an Operational Plan to identify and control the risk of transmission of Covid-19. This plan is the result of an in-depth analysis of all the protocols, procedures and measures implemented to reduce the risk of transmission of the disease to a minimum. Owing to the various safety measures adopted against the spread of Covid-19, Quirónsalud hospitals are now able to provide regular care in all their medical and surgical specialities, as well as emergency and diagnostic tests, with the same levels of healthcare coverage prior to the pandemic.

GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP A mixed bag of good and news stalled sterling, leaving it stationary and unchanged against other major currencies. Let’s start with the good, with the Prime Minister’s announcement of a relaxation in lockdown rules not coming as a surprise, and investors were generally positive with the pound rebounding, because overall the change ought to be good for morale and therefore positive for the economy too. Following the warning last week that any postBrexit trade deal must be fleshed out by October, Brussels and Downing Street are preparing for new talks next week – this week marked four years since Britain voted to leave the EU. Investors got the impression yesterday that both sides genuinely believe a deal to be possible but practicalities could prevent it happening. A poll found consensus that a trade deal will be achieved, and that the economy will expand by 5.5% next year after contracting by 8.7% in 2020. Sterling held its own after this news, but lost ground after to the US dollar, the euro and the safe-haven franc and yen. Curiously, sterling didn’t stall after The Bank of England’s Governor Andrew Bailey told Sky News that the government could have gone bust if the bank had not stepped in to provide working capital. And, despite the unexpected strength of the provisional purchasing managers’ index reading, sterling moved lower following the PMI announcement, perhaps because investors had hoped it would indicate relative growth after three months of weakness. The most obviously bad figure was for public sector borrowing. It jumped £54.5 billion in May, blowing away the forecast £47.4bn rise. The increase took public sector net debt to 100.9% of gross domestic product, the first time since 1963 that it has exceeded 100%. Retail sales for the same month were more benign, with a partial rebound of 12% still left them 13.1% lower than the same month last year. The CBI’s monthly Industrial Trends

THE OUTLET

Survey found UK manufacturing output falling in June to its lowest level since the measure began in 1975. The International Monetary Fund and a Reuters survey of economists produced broadly similar estimates of the UK economic outlook. The IMF sees gross domestic product shrinking 10.2% this year before rebounding by 6.3% in 2021. The Reuters panel put those numbers at -8.7% and +5.5%. EUR The IMF thinks euro zone gross domestic product will share the same -10.2% hole as Britain this year, followed by a slightly less punchy 6% rebound in 2021. For individual countries it puts Germany at 7.8% and +5.4%, France at -12.5% and +7.3%, and Italy and Spain both at -12.8% and +6.3%. The week’s economic data threw up nothing to contradict those guesses. Euroland consumer confidence picked up from 18.8 to -14.7, a second monthly improvement. German business and consumer confidence went up by six and a half and nine points respectively, roughly in line with expectations. Provisional purchasing managers’ indices were also better on the month but still below the line at 50 that separates growth from shrinkage. Manufacturing scored 46.9 and services did slightly better at 47.3. It wasn’t so much economic data that threw the punches at the euro this week. Clearly investors are still sensitive to the US-China trade war, and while that sensitivity doesn’t extend just yet to trade disputes between the States and Europe, with an election looming and increasingly pressured for a win, it doesn’t seem inconceivable that the US President would start bickers with Brussels in the next few months, and indeed it already seems we are seeing the start of this. Just a few days after the FT highlighted a lack of accord between Brussels and Washington, the Trump administration let it be known that it is considering another $3.1 billion of import tariffs on European goods.

Customer safety first at Inmobiliaria Since it opened its doors more than 30 years ago, Quesada’s leading estate agent Inmobiliaria has always placed its customers firmly at the heart of its business. Given the current pandemic the business environment in Spain has changed completely and the expert team at Inmobiliaria had plenty of time to ensure that when the doors reopened this principle remained forefront of the business. Company Director Rebecca Serwotka explains: “Our focus is completely on the safety of our customers and our team. Their wellbeing is our foremost concern as the easing of restrictions becomes the ´new normal’. We knew that our homeowners and buyers would naturally be nervous about the process of house viewings and dedicated lockdown to creating a system that would put their minds at rest and provide the protection we all need.” To this end Inmobiliaria has introduced its VIP Bags – VIP standing for Very Important Protection - as a standard protocol for staff and customers when viewing properties. Welcoming someone inside your home in the current health climate is a serious consideration for homeowners, as is visiting an enclosed, unknown space when you are viewing. However, the VIP Bags are aimed to offer maximum protection to all those involved. Each Inmobiliaria VIP Bag contains:

disposable gloves, hand sanitiser, face masks and shoe covers. The shoes covers have proved a particular hit, as viewers don’t have to keep taking their shoes off and on at the door. Inmobiliaria’s professional agents ensure that customers follow the safety guidelines, such as social distancing and use the packs to ensure that both they and the owners of the houses they are visiting stay safe and protected.

Time-tested expertise Inmobiliaria is the leading English Real Estate Agents in the Ciudad Quesada and surrounding area; buying and selling properties to all nationalities and covering all local areas including: Ciudad Quesada (Rojales), Doña Pepa I & II, Lo Marabu, Pueblo Bravo, Lo Pepin, La Fiesta, La Marquesa Golf, Rojales Hills, Atalaya, Benimar, Monte Azul, Montebello, Lo Crispin and Entre Naranjos (Vistabella Golf). The Inmobiliaria team has a huge amount of expertise in the property market. Its 30th Anniversary last year wss a milestone that reflects its position in the market, professional standing and levels of customer service. Owners Lyn Dallow and daughter Rebecca Serwotka are property experts and authors of the ever-popular book “Moving Forward: 25

essential rules for buying and selling real estate, without going crazy”. For further information on any of the above, or if you are ready to resume your property search visit: www.homes4u.es, call into the Inmobiliaria offices located in Calle de los Arcos 1, near to the arches in Quesada or call 966 718 392. Spain tops for LGB, gender equality and trans rights Coinciding with 'Pride Month' and International Pride Day – on 28th June – a report has revealed Spain is one of the world's top countries for protecting and supporting the homosexual and bisexual community, as well as the transgender and intersex population. A report by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) – whose member countries cover the whole of the

developed world and a few emerging nations – shows Spain is the fifth-best place in the world for non-heterosexual people to visit, live and work, and equally so for trans people. Anecdotal evidence has shown, for the best part of 20 years at least, that expats who identified as homosexual or bisexual were pleasantly surprised by how 'ordinary' they felt when they moved to Spain, experiencing total acceptance,

feeling safe, and being able to talk freely about their partners without avoiding personal pronouns, even with the older generations and in the workplace. The report says Spain fulfils 69 percent of international criteria in place as at 2019, and is only beaten by Canada (87 percent), Portugal (76 percent), France (74 percent) and The Netherlands (72 percent). And Spain is ahead of forward-

thinking European nations such as Germany (68 percent) and Iceland (67 percent), the latter of which is on a par with Australia. All eight countries are the top in a group of 17 which show the best levels of acceptance and equality – a fine balance with the right levels of 'normality' and 'visibility': Not treating either community as 'different', but at the same time, acknowledging they exist.

This Week´s Movie Picks Now You See Me

Sunday 5th July – Channel 4, 11.55 pm Four magicians each answer a mysterious summons to an obscure address with secrets inside. A year later, they are the Four Horsemen, big time stage illusionists who climax their sold-out Las Vegas show with a bank apparently robbed for real. This puts F.B.I. Agents Dylan Rhodes and Interpol Agent Alma Dray on the case to find out how they did it. However, this mystery proves to be difficult to solve, even with the insights of professional illusion exposer Thaddeus Bradley. What follows is a bizarre investigation where nothing is what it seems to be, with illusions, dark secrets, and hidden agendas galore as all involved are reminded of a great truth in this puzzle: the closer you look, the less you see.

Triple 9

Sunday 5th July – Channel 4, 12.15 am In TRIPLE 9, a crew of dirty cops are blackmailed by the Russian mob to execute a virtually impossible heist. The only way to pull it off is to manufacture a 999, police code for "officer down". Their plan is turned upside down when the unsuspecting rookie they set up to die foils the attack, triggering a breakneck, action-packed finale filled with double-crosses, greed and revenge.

Gin & tonic the low down With yet another glorious summer about to start here in Spain, so there's every chance that you're looking forward to sipping on an ice-y gin and tonic, perhaps garnished with wedge of grapefruit, while you bask on your sun terrace. It seems we can't get enough of the botanical spirit. Sales in gin have almost doubled in the past two years, according to the Wine and Spirit Trade Association, with 73m bottles sold in 2018. Is gin healthy? Gin is a spirit, with an ABV of anywhere between 37.5 percent to 50 percent wine, in comparison, is more like 12.514.5 percent. So, to get to the bottom of this all-importance question, and to find out exactly what nutrition is lurking in the calories of a G&T here’s the low down... Let’s get straight down to business and find out how many calories are in a G&T. Just gin: Single shot = 61 calories, Double shot = 122 calories. Served with 150ml regular tonic: Single = 93 calories, double = 154 calories. Served with 150ml slimline tonic: Single = 64 calories, double = 125 calories. And, before you start umming and ahhing over which of the distilleries to choose between, no, the difference in calories between gin producers is negligible. Even between tonic waters, it’s not that significant. What are the health benefits of gin and tonic? When it comes to your favourite tipple, we’d be wrong to pretend that drinking

G&Ts is going to do wonders for your health. However, gin is made from juniper berries, which do have some nutritional pros. But whether their benefits would exist to any significant degree in a 25ml shot, is another matter. 1. Juniper berries contain vitamin C Although much of this would likely be destroyed during production, serving your G&T with a big wedge of lemon can help to get some extra vitamin C into your day. Vitamin C being associated with better immune system function, for starters. 2. G&Ts are relatively low in calories When compared to, say, a glass of wine, a slimline gin and tonic has a lower calorie content than other alcohol drinks. So, a better option, then, for those of you who are trying to watch your macros. 3. G&Ts are less likely to give you a hangover Unlike darker alcoholic drinks such as red wine and brown spirits, gin doesn’t contain congeners,

Healthy foods...that might not be

which are produced as part of the fermentation process. These substances can make symptoms of a hangover much worse. 4. Gin is a natural spirit Gin is produced quite naturally as it is simply a blend of botanicals, which in themselves may also hold heathboosting properties. Think coriander seeds, citrus peel and angelica, thought to alleviate heartburn and gas. 5. Quinine can prevent restless legs According to a study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, nocturnal leg cramps are twice as common in summer than in winter. Quinine is commonly prescribed to treat the condition – and the tonic in your G&T is a source a quinine. A word on gin and tonic One shot of gin is about one unit and, according to Drink Aware, men and women are recommended to drink no more than 14 units per week. Exceeding that amount can lead to conditions such as liver and heart damage. Life and wellness are all about moderation and balance. If you drink, do it sensibly. Stay within your units per week. In terms of G&Ts, that equates to seven doubles per week. Space them out, though, rather than saving them for a weekend binge.

You may be surprised that some of the most popular trends really aren’t all that great for your waistline or your heart health. Smoothies While smoothies look and sound super healthy, they’re often times loaded with empty carbs. It all depends how you make it, but many recipes call for anywhere from three to five servings of fruit, which is way too much sugar. An overly generous smoothie with fruit and Greek yogurt can add up to 800 calories very quickly. Hummus Hummus gets this health halo where sometimes its calories are kind of forgotten and they can add up. In small portions, it is great as a dip or condiment and can add a boost of nutrition to a sandwich or vegetables. While the chickpeas are high in fibre, the dip also contains a lot of carbohydrates and fat. Portion out a quarter-cup of the dip before you start snacking so you’re not tempted to go past one serving size. Sushi On average, a roll of sushi can be anywhere from 300 to 400 calories. Sushi

has a healthy association, so several are often ordered without realising that the calories are adding up. The other to be careful about is when there’s tempura involved. Tempura is Japanese for ‘fried’, so eat sparingly. Veggie burger While not everyone is a fan of replacing beef or turkey in their burgers, veggie burgers are a healthy alternative for people who don’t eat meat. But the key is looking at the ingredients and nutritional information before you purchase. Veggie burgers don’t contain as much protein as say a turkey burger, so one patty might not be enough to truly fill someone up. Fast food salads If stopping at a drive-thru is part of your weekly routine, ordering a salad will only be beneficial if you make smart choices, and understand that they’re not all created equal. The portion of salad dressing is usually much larger than people realise and can add up to 400 calories alone. Also, skip the bacon bits and fatty cheeses on to-go salads. Turn the dressing packet around and look at the serving size on the label before you pour it on.

Warning issued after paddling pool causes house collapse Officials have warned against the dangers of placing paddling pools on balconies, terraces and upper floors of buildings after a house partially collapsed in Elda due to the weight of one such pool. Two people needed treatment after the incident which happened shortly before 6.30am. The roof of the family home in Elda, near Alicante, collapsed as it could not bear the weight of a paddling pool placed on the roof terrace. The Emergency Coordination Centre (CICU) dispatched an ambulance to the scene where paramedics treated a 17 year old for a leg injury and a 37 year old for a panic attack. Both were treated at the scene and did not need to be hospitalised. Sources investigating the accident indicated that the structural beams could not support the weight of the pool which had been placed on the roof terrace just above the family’s dining room. The roof

gave way and the pool fell through the opening. Fortunately, there was no one directly beneath the roof when it caved in. Municipal technicians are carrying out further inspections of the building to determine the exact condition of the building.

Firefighters were dispatched to the scene in order to help with the evacuation of the building. Crews evacuated, using ladders, the seven people in the property - three adults and four children who were all at home when the roof collapsed. Fire crews then helped clear the rubble to prevent it causing injury or

damage to adjacent buildings and also surveyed neighbouring properties to check for damage. It is believed that the pool held about 8000 litres of water which would weigh 8000 kilos. The professor of Structure of the Department of Civil Engineering of the University of Alicante, Salvador Ivorra, warned about putting inflatable or metal frame pools on terraces or balconies. Ivorra remarked in early June that anyone who did so is ‘foolish’ because the weight of the water “could easily overload the floor of the structure”. He explained that even when a pool of this type is only filled to a height of 50cm, up to the average person’s knees, the weight of the water could exceed 500 kilos per square metre – far more than most terraces or balconies are designed to support.

Beach safety in Orihuela Costa American woman diagnosed with Covid19 for second time A woman in Dallas is fighting her second battle against the coronavirus. Meredith McKee first tested positive for the potentially deadly virus in February, diagnosed after feeling "clear and obvious" symptoms, she told American news channel NBC 5. "I had a dry cough like you would not believe. It would not stop,” McKee recalled, explaining that she managed to fight off the first bout of the virus from home. She even donated some of her plasma after testing positive for antibodies. "I felt great finally [doing] something good coming out of the hell that I’ve been through because I'm going to help up to eight people with this plasma,” she said. However, McKee has now shared a tearful photo of herself from a hospital bed at Texas Health Presbyterian in Dallas. After admitting herself with high blood pressure and a headache, she found out she was one again

positive for COVID-19 four months after her initial diagnosis. "I was floored when it was positive," McKee said. Doctors are not sure why the virus sometimes re-emerges - or if it is contagious the second time

around. Some experts say that a second positive test could just mean that the virus is taking its time to leave the body, but that it can't infect others. "It's possible that people could shed remnants of the virus for some period of time. That doesn't mean anything is wrong with them or that they are contagious,"

Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious disease expert at Vanderbilt University Medical Centre in Nashville. Dr. Robert Haley, an epidemiologist at UT Southwestern, added that while it is obviously possible to get coronavirus twice, it appears to be a rare occurrence. In McKee's case, her doctors believe that the virus simply went dormant after her first bout of illness, a theory backed by Dr. Benjamin Neuman, a virologist and the head of the biology department at Texas A&M University-Texarkana. Neuman said that he believes a second positive test is not necessarily a reactivation of the virus but rather a resurgence. The virologist thinks people are probably “being discharged with some virus still in them, and then the disease returns.”

The Councillor for Citizen Security and Beaches, Ramón López, together with the Councillor for Health, José Galiano and the Councillor for the Orihuela Local Police, José María Pomares, have presented the security plan that will be put in place in Orihuela Costa this summer, which will be coordinated by the Local Police, and will have the support of the Lifeguard and Rescue Service, and Civil Protection. The Councillor said "we have fulfilled the annual commitment to beach safety by securing two jet skis for rescue and first-aid, and in addition, we have also resumed a service which has been highly demanded by the residents of the coast that is a police patrol on bicycles." Councillor López said: "We have reinforced the Rescue Service and the Orihuela Emergency Unit in this non-typical summer season with the pandemic we are suffering. We want to recover the feeling of wellbeing and security for all those who come to visit us. We want them to see that they not only have 11 blue flags beaches, but also feel that they are in Safety first a safe space.”

Appliance Repairs a surprisingly glamorous career When you think of a domestic appliance repairman, you don’t often think of rubbing shoulders with the stars but for Alan Foster, who started his career in London in the 70s, his client list reads like a who’s who of the London elite. We spoke to Alan this week who was delighted to tell us about a career that has spanned five decades and continues to this day on the Costa Blanca here in Spain with Appliance Repairs CBS. Alan Said, “I started in West London as an apprentice working on freezers for Alpine Everest which was like Iceland in 1974. I was there about seven years before starting a business with my brother repairing all large whitegoods in Greenford, West London. We had four people in the office and six engineers. The company moved on rapidly and we had an excellent name in the Service, being members of DASA, (domestic appliance service association) in 1986 and Corgi for gas.” It was around this time that Alan’s Alist clientele began to emerge. He said, “Due to the nature of the customers we were getting in central London, I was fidelity bonded, security screened and signed official secrets act. Some of my customers were, HRH Princess Margaret, in Kensington Palace at her private apartment, Royal Mews Buckingham palace; Tower of London, keeper of the jewels; assorted Embassies in London and military installations.” Alan continued, “Life on the road was very interesting. One day, I would visit, The Royal Mews,

Buckingham palace, repairing staff microwaves, walk around the Royal Albert hall, working on the fridges in the changing rooms, go to Vanessa Redgrave’s apartment to look at her dishwasher with awards all on the shelves above my head!” He continued, “Another weird day, I was contacted by my mother who worked in the office and she started with: 'it's nothing to worry about, when you have time, you have to contact a detective from Heathrow police murder squad’ Of course then, I began to worry! It turned out that a customer I had been to twice, was arrested for murdering his business partner and dumped the body in bags on the M25. After giving all the information I had about descriptions, names, etc. I found out that my name and phone number was in his diary and the police had to check everyone in it. You never know your customer I suppose!” Alan has had many adventures over the years. He said, “A surreal day in 2012 was when I got a call to go to Harptree Court, Somerset. It was lovely, with a big tent in the grounds, the car park was busy. I found the owner and we walked to a house in the grounds and I repaired the faulty dishwasher. I was walking across the field alone, in overalls, carrying a tool box walking out of nowhere to the

house. Past the tent and near some people talking, it was Paul Hollywood, Mary Berry, Mel and Sue... it was The Bake Off tent! They all looked as confused as me as I appeared out of thin air. We had a lovely chat and it made my day. I even got a picture of Paul's Aston Martin!” Starting a new chapter in his life, Alan made the move from the UK to Spain. He told us, “Six years ago I came over to Spain, working for a local company. Then in 2019, I spent six months working for a major German company, training, learning new skills, before deciding to call Spain my home again and start Appliance Repairs CBS. I have a massive store of oven elements, washing machine pumps, door handles, hoses, brushes etc. Also, I have a bank point of sale card machine as visitors and holidaymakers do not carry much cash these days for security, card payment is easier and safer for the customer and us. At the moment it is an 80% first time fix due to the variation of manufacturers and models of machines.” Contact Appliance Repairs CBS on 865 756 564 or 695 092 432.

Russian Granny arrested for child abandonment while drunk

Russian Granny arrested

A 50 year old Russian woman was arrested this week in Valencia, accused of child abandonment. National Police were called in when neighbours saw the woman, visibly drunk, being led home. It is believed that the woman was found unconscious on a nearby beach at around 7.30pm and a passing citizen offered to take her home so that she would not drive in her condition. A neighbour saw the now nearly unconscious woman being taken from a car and helped to her home by several people. Presumably knowing that the woman had in her care a 2 year old child, he called the authorities. Police arrived just minutes later and discovered the woman unconscious in her home, with her 2 year old grandson. Officers tried to revive the woman

without much luck, she didn’t appear to be able to speak so they called for an ambulance. Once she did regain her faculties she became aggressive with the officers and hurled abuse and kicks at the officers. Eventually, she had to be sedated. Officers reported the incident to the Child Protection Office in Valencia which admitted the tot to protective care at a local facility. The grandmother was arrested, accused of child abandonment. The woman’s dog, which was discovered at the address by officers at the scene, was given by police to the woman’s friend to look after while she was taken into custody. The woman, who does not have a police record, has since been released and will appear in court.

Top tips for wearing mask in the heat Summer in Spain has brought that hot, humid weather, which can make wearing a face mask nearly unbearable. If you're out in the sun with a mask on, you might feel sweat drenching the fabric or find it difficult for cool air to reach your lungs. No matter how cumbersome it feels, however, wearing a face-covering remains a vital step in preventing the spread of COVID-19 and is obligatory here in Spain. Besides discomfort, wearing a mask in the scorching summer heat can contribute to a variety of health concerns, including breathing difficulties, skin irritation, or even heat exhaustion. To stay safe this summer, follow these tips on wearing a face mask safely and comfortably as temperatures rise. Breathable Materials No matter what style of face mask you choose, it's essential that you're able to breathe properly while it's on. If your face covering is too thick or tight-fitting, it can restrict your breathing and become even more uncomfortable when it's hot or humid. Masks with filters can be especially difficult to breathe through if the filter material doesn't allow proper airflow. Experts believe that even loose-fitting masks will reduce transmission by 70 percent if everyone is wearing one. Lightcoloured cotton fabric, for example, is generally more breathable than synthetic fabrics and will absorb less heat from the sun. Just be sure the fabric completely covers your mouth and nose, and continue to maintain a safe distance with others as much as possible.

Prevent Skin Irritation Wearing a mask pressed against your face for long periods of time can cause skin irritations such as acne or rashes. Cotton masks are typically less irritating for the skin than other fabrics and can be worn more loosely around the face. You should also wash your face mask frequently to get rid of bacteria that could contribute to acne and other skin irritations. Plan to launder the mask in warm water after each wear. Bring Multiple Masks If you know you're going to be in a public place for an extended period of time, consider bringing extra masks so you can swap with a clean one as needed. Sweat and moisture from your breath can dampen the fabric of the mask, making it less effective at filtering out airborne particles. Change the mask if you notice the fabric feels damp or wet, but remember to do so away from other people and wash your hands before and after replacing.

Prevent Overheating Wearing a mask over your mouth and nose can make it more difficult to breathe. In warm weather, that could lead to shortness of breath and allow heat to build up in the body, resulting in illnesses like heat exhaustion or heatstroke. To keep cool while wearing a mask, avoid being outside in the direct sun for too long and stay hydrated. You might need to drink more water than usual in the summer to make up for increased sweating. Limit Your Need Wear a Mask To minimise your discomfort, limit the amount of time you need to wear a mask. Masks should be worn in public areas where it's difficult to maintain physical distance, such as the supermarket or shopping areas. If you know you won't be able to avoid other people, consider staying home on particularly warm days. If it's not essential to be out on a hot, humid day, don't go out. That's safest.

Foods to lower cholesterol In case you need a quick refresher on cholesterol, we all have two natural types in our bodies: HDL, the “happy” or good kind, and LDL, the “lousy” kind. In general, having a high HDL is healthy, while having a high LDL is linked to an increased risk of heart disease. Then there’s dietary cholesterol, found in animalbased foods. Experts used to think that eating high-cholesterol foods - like egg yolks and shrimp raised total blood cholesterol levels. Newer research has shown that’s not true. But what we do know for certain is that some foods can help manage or improve your overall cholesterol profile, and reduce your risk of heart disease. Try the following washed down with green tea. Pulses Several studies have linked pulses - the umbrella term for beans, lentils, and peas, like chickpeas - to cholesterol reduction. Pulses are truly one of the most versatile food groups, since they can be consumed in both savoury and sweet dishes, and are found in many forms, including whole beans, purees like hummus, pulse flours, and products like pulse-based pastas.

Avocado Avocado goes with just about everything! Spread it on whole grain toast, whip it into a smoothie, add it to an omelette, frittata, or salad. Use it to garnish soups, chilli, fish, chicken, beans, hummus, whole grains, or veggies. You can also scoop up guacamole with raw veggies as a snack, use avocado in place of butter in baking, and even whip it into creamy puddings and sauces. Oats Oats are a well-known cholesterol-lowering superfood. In one Thai study, people with high cholesterol were given either oatmeal or rice porridge for four weeks. The people who had the oatmeal experienced a 5 percent reduction in total

cholesterol, and a 10 percent slash in their LDL. At breakfast, oats can be whipped into smoothies, toasted and sprinkled over fresh fruit. Of course, there are dozens of variations of overnight oats these days. You can also use oats to coat baked fish or chicken (in place of breadcrumbs), and as a filler in meatballs, meatloaves, or patties. And oats and oat flour are staples for cookies and healthier baked goods and desserts. Almonds A study found that among heart disease patients, consuming just 10 grams of almonds before breakfast (that's about 8 almonds), significantly upped levels of protective HDL. In addition to snacking on whole almonds, you can use almond butter and almond flour in many meals and snacks.

Wonderful Life

Since my wife and I have been in Lockdown we’ve come to the conclusion that we really value our time together, and don’t want to work as hard as we did before the pandemic. It hit home how people were losing their lives, losing their loved ones and it has made us reflect. It’s an odd feeling of life being too short. Also, while we were isolating there has been a lot happening within our families that has made us look at our future and lives. There has been illness, divorce, and other trouble with our relatives - some of which is unnecessary bother that could have been avoided with a little effort from the people involved. We look at their chaotic lives and see that our simple lives are very dear to us. It has highlighted what we value most of all, which is our time together. We are nearing retirement age, and so can manage on the regular income we will receive, and we plan to keep working a little, but only take on what we need to so that we are still enjoying ourselves. We’ve seen the benefit in appreciating the simple things in life too - the things that are free and available to us - the beautiful weather here in Spain, fresh air, lovely countryside. We are also getting fit, slimming down and have never felt happier.

SALE

I am sure that many of us have taken stock one way or another, while we have all been isolating. It is good to hear that such positivity has come from your experience. Life is indeed very short, and so if you can, grab life with both hands and do exactly what you want to do. When time comes to us free of charge, it is the best time of all. Dementia risk greater for obese over50s Keeping to a "normal" weight could play a "significant role" in reducing the risk of dementia, a study suggests. It follows research that showed obese people in their 50s - especially women - have a 31 percent increased risk of dementia compared with those of the same age with normal weight. A study by xcientists at University College London (UCL) suggests the risk may be particularly high for women who have abdominal obesity and keeping body mass index (BMI) under control could help. Dr Dorina Cadar, from UCL's Institute of Epidemiology and Health Care, and senior author on the study, said: "These findings provide new evidence that obesity may have important implications in terms of dementia risk. Both BMI and waist circumference status should be monitored to avoid metabolic or vascular complications. "Hence, reducing weight to optimal levels is recommended by adopting healthy and balanced patterns of eating, such

as the Mediterranean diet, appropriate physical exercise and reduced alcohol consumption throughout the course of the entire adult life span." The research team analysed data gathered from more than 6,500 people who were part of

the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing, a representative database of over-50s in England which stores information about health, wellbeing and economic circumstances in several time periods. The participants did not have dementia at the start of the study. Compared with those with BMIs at normal levels (between 18.5-24.9), the team found people whose BMI was 30 or higher at the start of the study period had a 31 per cent greater risk of dementia, at an average of 11 years later. Women with abdominal

obesity, based on waist circumference, were found to have a 39 percent increased risk of dementia compared with those who were not obese. When BMI and waist circumference were viewed in combination, obese study participants of either gender showed a 28 per cent greater risk of dementia compared with those in the normal range, the researchers said. Professor Andrew Steptoe, of the UCL Institute of Epidemiology and Health Care and director of the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing, said: "Dementia is one of the major health challenges of the 21st century that could threaten successful ageing of the population. Our findings suggest that rising obesity rates will compound the issue. By identifying factors that may raise dementia risk that are influenced by lifestyle factors, we hope that a substantial portion, but admittedly not all, of dementia cases can be prevented through public health interventions." The research has been published in the International Journal of Epidemiology.

Air pollution falls Air pollution in Spain has plummeted to levels of nearly a decade ago, even before the three-month lockdown, and which is likely to be partly due to schemes set up in previous years in some of the country's largest and worst-offending cities. According to a study by Ecologists in Action, contamination fell in 2019 by 58 percent in Spain's main metropolitan areas, taking it down to levels seen in 2011 – and is thought to have reduced even further during the Covid-19 shutdown. It remains to be seen whether it will spike again now the State of Alarm is over, but about two years ago, Madrid set up a traffic-free zone – known as 'Madrid Central' – which has seen air pollution fall visibly and has been championed by residents. This said, a change in local government last May means 'Madrid Central' could be in jeopardy, although it is probable that any backtracking on the move could mean the Spanish capital is among other cities continent-wide hauled before the European Commission again to explain what they intend to do about their pollution problems. As at last year, one in four Spanish residents was living or working in an area where the air quality was poor – around 12.5 million people – although this figure was 2.3 million fewer than in 2018 and the lowest since 2011. This may be partly because a high percentage of the population is concentrated into built-up areas – figures for Madrid and Barcelona, among other major urban zones, are likely to account

for the majority of those 12.5 million. These data were calculated using maximum safe limits established in Spanish legislation, although Ecologists in Action says taking the much more stringent limits set by the World Health Organisation (WHO) would mean 94 percent of people in Spain, or 44.2 million, were breathing in unclean air. This would appear extreme, however, since Spain's overall pollution levels are, on the whole, no higher than in much of the western world, and would effectively mean that nearly 100 percent of people living in industrialised and wealthy countries were affected by air contamination. Reductions in pollution, in Spain or anywhere else in the world, would, nevertheless, always be welcome, given that contaminated air is directly responsible for over seven million deaths per year on Planet Earth – about one in

every 1,000 people in the world. In Spain, the figure is around 30,000 a year – higher than the number of lives lost in the country through the Covid-19 outbreak (currently 28,325) – and for Europe as a whole, around half a million. Deaths caused by air pollution in Spain have nearly doubled in the last decade, from 16,000, although at the time, with the country in the grip of a financial crisis, industrial activity, commuting and general movement was much lower than in 2019 when the economy had completely recovered. According to the World Bank, premature deaths around the globe, and working days lost through illness, as a direct result of air pollution, cost the international economy €38 billion in 2013 alone – equivalent to 3.5 percent of Spain's GDP – without taking into account damage to crops or natural ecosystems.

Spain to trial coronavirus tracing app on Canary Island Spain will try out a new smart-phone app aimed at thwarting the spread of the coronavirus by injecting hundreds of false cases into the system in a test run which started last Friday on the Canary Island of Gomera. The simulation is part of a system intended to send an alert when one user has been in contact with another who receives a positive diagnosis, the government said. “The idea is that approximately 3,000 people download it and we will introduce around 300 simulators, beta testers, to mimic a pandemic among 10 percent of the population,” a government spokeswoman said. It will use Bluetooth short-range radio to log contacts. To guard against impinging on people’s privacy, contact records will be stored on individual devices rather than a central server, using a standard

developed by Apple (AAPL.O) and Google (GOOGL.O). The trial started on Friday and will continue for two weeks, a period the government hopes will be enough to prove whether the app could be rolled out across the country. Technology and defence company Indra (IDR.MC) has been contracted to manage the pilot at a cost of about $375,000. Gomera is home to about 22,000 residents near the tourist hotspot of Tenerife. More than 28,000 people have died in the coronavirus pandemic in Spain, but the situation has eased and the country is emerging from a strict lockdown. The government is anxious to get the tourist industry, a mainstay of the economy, back on its feet and the Canary Islands are a popular destination. They had 2,398 confirmed coronavirus cases out of a national total of 245,268 as of 18th June.

Spain plans safe schooling Monarchy celebrates lockdown end with visit Spanish education officials have for weeks been debating how to get non-university students safely back to school in the autumn for in-person classes. Schools shut down across Spain in March due to the coronavirus pandemic and classes were moved online, but educators have been warning about the gaps in access to technology and the risk that some students could be left behind. While the central government has issued a series of guidelines over the last few weeks, powers over education and healthcare are devolved to the regions, with the exception of what is stipulated in a government decree regulating Spain’s “new normality” following the lockdown. This decree states that schools must take measures to avoid large groups and to guarantee a safe distance of at least 1.5 meters between children. But the text adds that when this distance is not possible, “the proper hygiene measures must be adopted to prevent the risk of contagion.” Regional governments have taken this to mean that children may sit closer to each other, as long as they adopt alternative safety measures such as wearing

a face mask at all times. The government had originally talked about a safe distance of two meters and class sizes of no more than 15 children. But the issue of space, especially in high schools, has led authorities to gradually change these numbers in order to adapt

to the reality on the ground. The creation of so-called class “bubbles” or groups of students who stay together and do not interact with other people at school are now being discussed. These groups will be allowed in early education and primary school, and may contain as many as 25 students who will not have to observe social distancing or wear face masks. There is a division of opinion among experts whether these

bubbles should have around 10 students, or whether they would still work with class sizes of up to 25. “The problem is that when the bubble gets very big, the risk of transmission is greater and controlling its components also gets more difficult,” notes Quique Bassat, a paediatrician and epidemiologist. Most regional governments, regardless of the political party in power, believe that it is impossible to create groups of 10 students and maintain the 1.5-meter distance, and still have enough space to bring all students back to school in the autumn. Regional education officials are questioning the theory behind the guidelines, noting that schools are being asked to adopt exceptional measures while other public venues such as libraries, museums, restaurants and stores are now allowed to operate at increased capacity, as long as people use face masks when social distancing is not possible. The central government has allocated an additional €2 billion for regional education spending, and a further €260 million to distribute 500,000 computers and tablets at schools.

King Felipe and Queen Letizia return to the State of Alarm arrived in Gran Canaria recently which came into force on 16th for their first official trip since March and ended on Sunday, before lockdown – to 'transmit 21st June. the message' to people in Spain Felipe VI and his wife Letizia, that they 'can now safely travel masked and greeting members anywhere in the country'. of the public with 'elbow bumps' Their visit, however, came to avoid contact and potential before the announcement of a handful of localised outbreaks, mostly in northern Spain – half of which, around 50, are in Aragón's Pyrénéen province of Huesca, where four districts have been put back to 'Phase 2' after just four weeks of 'New Normality', or the 'precautionary' end of confinement. These outbreaks have been traced to very specific environments – factories, residential homes and, in Huesca, a group of youths holding a bring-your-own-bottle King Felipe and Queen Letizia street-drinking party, or botellón, which is illegal in any contagion, visited the Pérez case. Galdós Museum in the island's The national health authority capital, Las Palmas, and gave says it has isolated all cases, speeches urging the Canarians closed the premises where the and the rest of Spain to get on outbreaks have occurred where with their lives and revive the possible, and are tracing economy which, like most contacts, but have ruled out a countries, has taken a temporary

knock due to the pandemic. The monarchs landed at Gran Canaria's military base in Gando, meeting with island and regional authorities, but always maintaining a safe distance. They also met with employees and business owners in the tourism and farming industries, and were met with resounding applause by masked members of the public lining the streets. The museum they visited, in Las Palmas' central Triana neighbourhood, reopened to the public that day for the first time since before lockdown, and the monarchs' presence was aimed at showing support for cultural institutions and encourage people to return to them. Later, they took a walk on the island's popular Las Canteras beach. They visit the Canaries' other main island Tenerife the following day, where they made an official trip to Santa Cruz – the region's second provincial capital – and also travelled to the southern part to explore an agricultural plantation before meeting with representatives of the farming industry.

The Enemy Within! With the declaration of the State of Alarm due to the COVID-19 pandemic, sleep problems in Spain have increased by 30%. Driving without having slept well, either for this reason or for others, such as suffering from sleep apnoea, increases the risk. Before quarantine began, almost 60% of Spanish residents reported trouble sleeping. That percentage could have reached up to 90% during the State of Alarm, according to the calculations of Dr. Elia Gómez Merino, a pulmonologist and expert doctor in Sleep Medicine at the HLA Vistahermosa Sleep Unit. Increased levels of anxiety and depression, due to lack of control of the situation, can cause insomnia or problems fallingasleep.

these road accidents have high mortality rates. In general, these are accidents on main roads, which take place in the middle of the afternoon or around midnight and with a single vehicle that goes off the road. Chronic sleep This group of experts emphasises that drowsiness is “an important risk factor for traffic accidents”. And they add that those most likely to suffer it are professional drivers (more time behind the wheel), those who work very long shifts, people who sleep less than 6 hours, those who consume alcohol, hypnotics or other medications, and “people who have symptoms related to the presence of undiagnosed sleep apnoea or other sleep disorders.”

Risk factor According to Dr. Gómez, not sleeping correctly generates metabolic, cardiovascular, cognitive, gastro-intestinal, and emotional problems. Establishing routines, avoiding exciting substances such as alcohol or caffeine, doing some physical exercise and avoiding long naps are some of the tips for better sleep. Not having a restful sleep at night negatively influences road safety. Fatigue or daytime sleepiness are behind 30% of traffic incidents, according to the article signed by the late doctor Joaquín Terán (then head of the Sleep Unit of the Burgos Assistance Complex) and other experts in “Archives of Broncho pneumology”. This article indicates that

Dr. Fernando Masa, head of Pneumology at the San Pedro Alcántara de Cáceres Hospital and a member of SEPAR (Spanish Society of Pneumology and Thoracic Surgery), highlights that a study carried out in the year 2000 of 4,002 drivers, showed that on 3, 6% of Spanish drivers suffered from chronic sleep during the day (about 500,000 people, since that year there were about

12 million people with driving licences in Spain). Of that percentage, 81% acknowledged falling asleep at the wheel at some time, while 25% did so regularly. Spain, pioneer against apnoea In 2016, Spain incorporated the European Directive that regulates psychophysical skills to obtain or extend a driving licence; one of them refers to sleep apnoea. However, the country had already included it years before in the General Regulations for Drivers (Annex IV). From the DGT, a protocol is promoted for the Driver Recognition Centres (CRC) to carry out an individualized assessment. People diagnosed with apnoea must submit a report from the Sleep Unit that treats them, which specifies whether the disease is controlled, especially drowsiness and the type, compliance and efficacy of treatment (CPAP, mandibular advancement device), weight loss, etc.). If everything turns out positive, their driving licence is renewed for one year if they are professional drivers and for three the rest. However, specialists recommend “carrying out a screening to detect the presence of SAHS” and assess sleepiness by combining the Epworth Scale (a short questionnaire that asks about everyday situations in which a person falls asleep) with the STOP-Bang questionnaire (which includes a series of objective data, such as hypertension, body mass index greater than 35 kg / m2, age, neck circumference, etc.).

The Risks of Older Vehicles As technology advances, so do the safety features of our vehicles. The near future may well see fully autonomous vehicles on the roads, but they will still have to mix with cars of today, and yesterday, for some time yet. Sadly, the risk of death or serious injury is multiplied by two when comparing incidents that occur with vehicles 10 to 15 years old, in relation to vehicles less than 5 years old, which is why the proper maintenance of all safety elements becomes an essential activity. The correct maintenance of a vehicle contributes decisively to ensure adequate safety conditions throughout its useful life. These safety conditions are periodically verified in the technical inspections (ITV). In the last campaign it was discovered that 1.64% of the vehicles on the road don´t have a valid ITV. Tyres: The tyres are the only surface of the vehicle in contact with the road. They are responsible for ensuring adhesion in acceleration, braking and lateral sliding. They also ensure that the direction of travel of the vehicle is as desired by the driver and the damping of road imperfections. It is recommended that the groove depth be at least 3 millimetres, although the legal minimum is 1.6 millimetres.

Approximately more than a million vehicles, 5% of vehicles on the road, have serious defects with the wheels, mainly because they have a depth below the legal minimum of 1.6 mm, have irregular wear due to bad suspension or incorrect alignment, or incorrect pressure. In addition, vehicles related to professional use such as vans have higher rates of tyre defects. It is also necessary to regularly check the cold tyre pressure, including the spare wheel, as well as check for possible air leaks from the valves. The cap of the same constitutes an element of tightness, so its use is essential. Lighting: The purpose of vehicle lights is not only to see, but also to be seen, since each vehicle is, in practice, an obstacle for others, so the definition of its presence is also significant. So that driving is carried out in safe conditions, it is advisable to pay special attention to the use, maintenance and regulation of the headlights, to get, on the one hand, sufficient light and, on the other, not to dazzle those who are also driving on public roads. Bulbs reduce their intensity with use, so they must be changed every 40,000 km. or 2 years. The bulbs must be changed in pairs, because their use is symmetrical in most cases. It is necessary to always keep the lights clean.

Other elements: In addition to lights and tyres, the following elements are also checked and should be monitored closely: The number plates: The driver must verify that the number plates of the vehicle do not present obstacles that impede or hinder their reading and identification and are not damaged or tampered with. Carrying the illegible registration number is a serious infraction with a sanction of 200 euro but manipulating the registration plate to try to evade traffic laws can lead to a fine of 6,000 euro and the loss of 6 points. Windscreen: The driver must verify that the windscreen does not present any damage, since it is a fundamental part in the structural resistance of the vehicle, in the efficiency of the airbag and in the support of cameras and sensors of driving assistance devices. The documentation of the vehicle that must be carried, in addition to the mandatory driving licence is: Vehicle logbook, which contains the technical data of the vehicle and the data of its owner (or an authorisation from the Traffic Department). ITV card and corresponding sticker, visible on the front windscreen.

TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

*Mutters to himself ‘I’d rather have this football than no football at all’* Honest, I would. I’ve even begun to accept the ‘crowd noise’ that’s getting streamed in over matches - I mean, I’d rather this than hear yet another expletive head David Luiz’s way any time the ball goes near him. I think we can call this a rare week in football - a week where we officially doff our caps to Liverpool Football Club who have won the English Premier League for the first time in their history. You might have missed the news, after all the media have been quite understated about it. It’s almost as if there’s been about a million articles written in the 100 days without football just waiting to be published as soon as it was done.

But it’s happened. The monkey is off their back. And their 4-0 battering of Uncle Roy’s Palace had everything that was missing against Everton in the derby. Well, goals, mainly. Four of them. What can you do when the right-back is able to curl home free kicks like that? What can you do when the holding midfield player puts a glorious assist on a plate for Mo before larruping one in himself from 30 yards? Not a lot, it would seem - and City finally conceded the title needing snookers against Chelsea. In many ways, it’s felt like a season just to get done since the restart understandably. Equally, you have to give a little bit of credit to Liverpool for being able to rock up three months later than expected and just get the job done. Credit, unless you are Ole Gunnar Solskjaer of course - who reminded Liverpool the next day that they would be unlikely to dominate the 20s like United dominated the 90s. Classic Ole, reminding the world how good United used to be.

And done it is, well and truly. When Willian, a player that Liverpool so badly wanted back in the day and Chelsea pinched from under their nose, scored the winning penalty against Man City Liverpool fans of all ages were able to finally shake off the ‘30 years of hurt’ they’d felt since last lifting the top flight trophy. As we’ve all heard over and over again, had you said to a Liverpool fan that the 1989/90 season would be the last time they would be league champions they’d have thought you were as crazy as Graeme Souness thinking Istvan Kozma was a player.

The week started with City battering Burnley meaning Liverpool couldn’t be crowned champions at home to Palace - I always felt City must be amazing to watch in training and with matches feeling like glorified training sessions currently, we got to see them in all their pomp. Leicester must be wishing football hadn’t come back so soon - they’ve won just once in seven now, meaning the teams below them must be smelling some blood. It could have been even worse for them if the Premier League’s current pantomime villain Neal Maupay had scored from the spot.

Over at Tottenham, one thing that is guaranteed to kick start a late run for the Champions League spots is a home match against West Ham United. Spurs were allowed to be distinctly average yet still get all three points - which was pretty much expected even before David Moyes decided to play Mark Noble as a ‘10’, the kind of team selection that just screams ‘relegation’. Sure, VAR went against them a little bit but if you also let an unfit Harry Kane out sprint you from the half-way line then you need to have a very long, hard look at yourselves in the mirror. Right now, you’d presume Sheffield United are just happy they’ve already got 40 points. Manchester United broke some records at Old Trafford - being the first team to make a quintuple (I think) substitution in English football and scoring the first hat-trick since Sir Alex called it a day. Anthony Martial got the treble and I am pretty sure we saw him smile.

West Ham as they let the Wolves man do exactly the same again at Molineux condemning the Cherries to yet another defeat. OK, OK - knowing what Traore is going to do and stopping it are two different things, admittedly. But still, Bournemouth need a better strategy than hoping West Ham will end up screwing up more often than they do between now and the end of July. The weekend gave us the FA Cup and the first time FA Cup matches had been played in June. Their home tie against United summed up Norwich even more than leaving Keane unmarked in the week. The Canaries played well, frustrating United. Yes, Ighalo scored a cute finish but Norwich were in this one. Todd Cantwell added a few more admirers to his ‘please rescue me from relegation’ list with an equaliser that even David de Gea might have saved. And then they got a man sent off.

Newcastle still defy the Premier League numbers - bottom of every single table when you look at any kind of stat, somehow they continue to get points on the board. Mind you, when Andy Carroll has more assists than Mesut Ozil you know something is going right. Norwich got that sinking feeling - you know you are going down when Michael Keane is a match winner against you. Now, I often wonder whether Premier League sides do scout the opposition and I’ve often presumed that Bournemouth would be all over that kind of stuff given how well they’ve done to stay in the Premier League for so long. Yet, they must have missed the bit where Adama Traore sprinted down the right and crossed for the winner against

United became the first team to make six subs in an English game and it felt like every single one of them must have been a striker given how many were on the pitch by the end of extra time. And, ironically, it was Harry Maguire who scrambled home a winner. United playing badly and winning matches? How very Liverpool of them. When Arsenal committed the stereotypical sin of being the team David McGoldrick finally scored against you’d have backed the Blades to go on and nick the win. Yet, from somewhere that nobody quite knew existed, Arsenal found a bit of bottle, a bit of backbone and went on to get the win themselves meaning they are in the FA Cup semi finals. No, I know. I didn’t see that coming either.

Elche CF Lose, Draw, Win, Lose, Draw? Las Ramblas Golf Society Since the restart following the Covid closure, Elche has set a results pattern...and it's looking promising for their next game against top of the table Cadiz on Tuesday 30th June! Elche CF had two games this week. After the moral boosting 1-0 victory at home against fellow promotion play off hopefuls Girona, Elche had on paper a relatively easy home game against lowly Deportivo La Coruna. However, as soon as the game started it was clear to see Deportivo had set out for the draw or a breakaway goal. Pacheta, Elche's manager, had set out for an attacking game, his tactic was reflected in the stats with Elche having 65% possession and 20 goal shots. Even with 10 men, after a 32nd minute red card, it was Deportivo's plan that won the day. A break away goal for them came on the 65th minute. The Deportivo winger flew down the line to whip in a pin point low cross to substitute Vallejo, who powered in the header from close range.

Next up was a flight to the Canaries for the Saturday night fixture at the Estadio Gran Canaria with an empty capacity of 32.500. The home team in their famous yellow and blue started in 14th and miraculously Elche was still in 6th place. However only 4pts separated them. When they played each other earlier in the season, Elche was 2 up at half time but threw the lead away and lost 2-3. The game started fast, with end to end opportunities. On 20 minutes Elche goalie Edgar gave us a scare. He bravely fell at the feet of the striker, but luckily no long term damage was done. Just as well as he had a busy night ahead! The deadlock was broken on 29 minutes, when Ruben Castro slotted the ball through the legs of the oncoming Elche defence,

obscuring Edgar's view and resulting in a goal. On 39 minutes we enjoyed one of those 'did that just happen?' moments and it went our way! Juan Cruz whipped in a high looping cross to the oncoming Escriche only to see the ball fly past Canarian goalie Martinez! A fluke goal, and one to watch on the Spanish Match of the day. The second half was full of unfulfilled opportunities. On 51 minuets Josan, Elche's right winger cross was saved by the finger tips of Martinez. On 59 minuets the Yellows found the net again only to be ruled offside. On 82 minutes substituted Jonathas missed a golden chance by heading an Elche corner over the bar. The question on all supporters lips is, will Elche CF continue the results pattern and give us a win next?

Monday saw us compete in a good old’ Texas Scramble. Two teams managed to come in with a gross score of 68. By virtue of a higher handicap allowance, with a nett 58.7, the winners were Joyce McClusky, Anne Marie Weisheit, Mike Brentnall and Lyndsay Forbes. With a nett 60.1 our runners up were Ellen & John Drakesmith, Pete Dunn and Graham Murray. There were some very good scores on Wednesday when it was time again for our individual Stableford. John Shervell took the title with a very impressive 40 points. No fewer than three players finished the round on 38 points. On countback it was ITMA (yes, you have to be of a certain age to get it!) Graham Murray who racked up 22 of

them on the back 9. Behind him came Ken Robertson and 4th slot went to Mike Mahoney. It was a rare site indeed to see Tom Hardie using his pitching wedge to putt out on the 14th green today. He had left both (yes both!) his putters on the previous hole. Worthy of a mention was Joyce McClusky’s shot on the third where her ball hit the pin and started coming back towards her before backspin took it into the hole. A 2 ball better ball was the format for Friday. With 48 points, 26 of which came on the back nine, Paul Brown and Joyce McClusky were in the money. Paul obviously had a good day as he managed to come in second as well with John Dobson. Again with 48 points John missed out on countback by scoring 24 points on the back. Reg Akehurst, yet again,Last update: 30.04.2020 scored a 4 for 4 points on the 18th which edged him and Nick Campbell into third spot. Pues hasta la semana que viene Peter Reffell

Chelsea are becoming quite the FA Cup team, if you hear a statistic for the very first time. One final victory up until 1997 (or something), seven more since then. That’s one every three years or so. What does that tell us? That it was no surprise they beat Leicester on Sunday and progressed to the semis - that’s what. And whilst Newcastle might be beating the stats and confounding the critics in the league, the FA Cup was a different story. To be fair, they had a plan and that plan was working until Fabian Scharr thought giving Jesus two hands in the back was a good idea. Still, it gave the commentators a chance to remind us (again) it was Kevin de Bruyne’s birthday as if a professional player had never played on his special day ever before. If Dwight Gayle had managed not to place it 90 metres over the bar from five yards out the game might have been different and you just knew City would score their second within minutes of that miss - and it was Raheem Sterling who delivered the killer blow. City might not win the league but they seem to be nailed on for the FA Cup. In the weekend Premier League stuff it was business as usual, really - and that meant Aston Villa losing (1-0 to the Wolves) and Danny Ings scoring for Southampton and James Ward-Prowse pinging home free kicks. Ings netted twice in a 3-1 win for Southampton that kept Watford very much in the relegation chat.
