Parts of Spain back in lockdown See Main Advert on page 27

Officials in Galicia were the latest to announce a return to lockdown for the 71,000 residents of A Mariña in Lugo, due to a new outbreak of Covid-19 in the area. The Galicia lockdown followed another return to confinement for the 200,000

inhabitants of Segriá when the Catalan government announced emergency measures there from midday on Saturday. The Galicia lockdown came into effect at midnight on Sunday due to a sharp rise in infections, concentrated around A Mariña. Residents will not be able to enter or leave the area for a week in order to try to prevent the spread of infection. A rise in infections was detected on June 24th and officials have been closely monitoring cases in the days since. A number of bars and restaurants in the region decided to close after discovering that staffmembers had been infected. Health authorities in neighbouring regions remain on high alert. Head of the Galician government, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, revealed that the outbreak was limited to ‘two or three bars’ in the port Continued on page 3

area where a number of waiting staff had tested positive for Covid-19. Health officials there said that the patients in question were asymptomatic or were presenting mild symptoms. The Galician government called for calm, pointing out that despite this latest outbreak, the region has had fewer than 300 active cases throughout the health crisis. The return to lockdown means that citizens will be able to move around within the area but limits will be in place in terms of opening hours and capacity in establishments. Masks will be obligatory in open air areas including beaches and only those who need to enter or exit the area for work purposes will be allowed to do so if they can prove legitimacy of their claim. The regional elections in Galicia are scheduled for this Sunday and anyone who has tested positive for Covid-19 will not be allowed to vote. Those who are classed as close contacts of confirmed cases will be allowed to vote if precautionary measures are taken. In Segriá in Cataluña, residents are also prohibited from travelling out of, or in to, the area. The area affected is in the south of the province, bordering with Huesca and Zaragoza and covers 38 municipalities. Return to lockdown in Segriá began at midday on Saturday but a four hour window was open for non residents who wished to leave, or residents out of the area to return. No one is now permitted to enter or leave, with the exception of those who need to go to work. Officials there estimate the return to lockdown may last for around two weeks but will depend on the evolution of the rate of infection. The courts there can rule to extend lockdown if the figures are not acceptable.

A young man who tested positive for Covid-19 travelled to Ibiza for a stag party, despite allegedly being aware that he was infected. The man was forcibly confined to Can Misses hospital on the island on Saturday, according to the Balearic Ministry of Health. Reports claim that days before travelling to Ibiza, the young man had tested positive in a PCR test. He began to present symptoms on June 20th so a test was administered. The patient was informed that the test was positive on June 26th and was told to self isolate at home. He ignored advice and travelled to Ibiza on June 29th. On Saturday, the Health Emergency Coordination Centre, a wing of the Ministry of Health, informed officials on Ibiza that the man had travelled to the island and police were sent to bring him to hospital. He was located in the early hours of Saturday morning and confined to the coronavirus ward of Can Misses hospital. Contact tracers on Ibiza have already started to reach out to those who may have been in contact with the man in order to find out as soon as possible if they have been infected in order to prevent a potential outbreak. In addition to the forced hospitalisation, health officials report that a file will be opened against the man "for an alleged crime against public health."

80 more stalls open in the Torrevieja weekly market

Councillor for Markets at Torrevieja Town Hall, Antonio Vidal, reported that a series of modifications have been completed in the marketplace at Torrevieja’s Antonio Soria Park. The essential works were needed for the reorganization of the Friday market so that the facility can impose all necessary security measures for shoppers and stallholders alike. In addition, four new security guards have begun to work to control access and the interior of the compound. The four will serve as support for the Local Police, Civil Guard and Civil Protection personnel who have been carrying out the service since its reopening. Antonio Vidal has also indicated that organisers have opened 80 more stalls selling textiles, gift items and more, which means that some 220 merchant stalls are now in operation. The Councillor for Markets stressed that the town hall is gradually increasing activity at the market, providing citizens with the greatest possible security – essential, says Vidal, given that we are talking about one of the most important weekly markets in the Valencian Community. Councillor Vidal also pointed out that so far the return of the market has been a success and that shoppers are complying with all the safety and hygiene standards established since it was reopened.

Orihuela studying plans for campsite in Sierra Escalona Officials in Orihuela are studying the final plans of a ‘macrocamping’ site in the protected Sierra Escalona. The rustic camping resort would cover 50,000 square metres and have capacity for 112 motorhomes, 16 bungalows, swimming pools, shops and a supermarket. The company that is planning the construction of a campsite with a capacity for 400 users within the Sierra Escalona Protected Landscape has requested that Orihuela Town Hall begin the

process of public information and environmental assessment for the project The initiative is entitled "tourism camp, school farm and nature interpretation centre" and proposes the construction of a "rustic" resort on 50,000 square meters. The proposal was first presented in 2014 by the company Agro-Torre Letur SL. The land in question is within the scope of the Special Protection Area for Birds (ZEPA). Sierra Escalona and Dehesa de

Campoamor have the highest density of eagle owls in Europe. Environmental group Friends of Sierra Escalona has protested against the construction of the campsite. Since 2014 only the Cambiemos party, linked to Podemos, has voiced its objection to the project. The plot is located on the Rebate road (CV-925), 400 meters from the junction that connects Torremendo and San Miguel de Salinas (CV-951). The City Council has requested a planning fee for the activity of 173,000 euros.

Opera comes to the Coast 5 THINGS YOU SHOULD BE LOOKING FOR, IN A RENTAL INVESTMENT Rebecca Serwotka

Ready to buy a rental investment? Maybe you’ll use the property yourself during the Winter months, and rent it out during the summer. If you’re on the hunt for a holiday home, here are 5 important things to consider if you’re wanting to earn a rental income. 1. Bedrooms – To maximize the renting potential, you need have a clear vision on how many people you'll want to cater for. If you were to purchase a two bedroomed property, you can accommodate up to 6 people simply by putting a sofa bed in the lounge. 2. Swimming Pool – To maximize your rental potential, you’ll need to have access to a communal swimming pool. This is usually high on the list of “must have’s” for any family holiday. 3. Location - When deciding on an area, you need to consider these two points. A) Being closer to the beach means amenities, like bars, restaurants, supermarkets, etc. will not be open in the Winter months. B) Being in a residential area, means you’ll always have amenities open throughout the year. You could then take advantage of potential Winter

rental opportunities too. 4. Amenities – If you want the ability to be within walking distance of a local supermarket, bars and restaurants, you need to choose your area accordingly. But remember, what’s a “mile away” to you, could be a “stones throw” to someone else! 5. Licenses - Be sure to find out if the area you’re searching in, caters for short term rentals. This means you need to check you’ll be granted a “Tourist License” to legally rent out your property. Beware, as there are some Town Halls that will not grant licenses for short term rentals. Make sure you bring up these five points with your Real Estate Agent, as they will be able to offer you suggestions or alternatives for your needs. Popular sweet Conguitos branded racist A few months ago it was ColaCao, the chocolate drink brand, that ditched its decades-old song about the negrito – a patronising term for a black man – and replaced it with another jingle devoid of racist overtones. Now, the Change.org platform is saying that Lacasa, the company that produces Conguitos, should follow suit and get rid of its “adorable” mascot as the Black Lives Matter movement gains momentum in the wake of the George Floyd killing in Minnesota. A petition on the Change.org platform has almost 5,000 signatures and the branding has caused a stir on social media, where the disproportionately large red lips of the Conguito caricatures have been remarked upon, as well as the fact that it has taken the death of George Floyd to make us aware in Spain that racism can begin with a bag of sweets. The mascot was thought up by an ad agency in 1961 – more than 50 years ago. It is dated, like the 1985 Frigo ice cream ad with lyrics including the term negrito, and which

is no longer shown on Spanish TV. Or like the caramel custard sold in the 1950s under the brand name Mandarin inside a yellow box, which would be considered highly suspect in this day and age. On the back of the Black Lives Matter movement, international brands have been taking a closer look at some of their products and rebranding them. Nestlé is renaming the popular Colombian candy Beso de Negra (Kiss of the Black Woman), and Pepsi has announced that its Aunt Jemima products are to get a makeover. However, far from considering modifying the imagery, company officials insist on the “adorable

nature of the mascot,” adding that: “Since Lacasa Group acquired the product, it has got rid of its original connotations, giving it positive values that are linked to the product and not to any particular race.” To back their argument, they point out that white Conguitos have a white mascot on the packet. But this argument is making little headway with the people behind the Change.org petition, who are demanding a public apology from Lacasa to the black community and suggesting that some corporate profits should be donated to organisations fighting racism.

Newborn triplets test positive for Coronavirus, but not parents Newborn triplets in Mexico have tested positive for the coronavirus on the day they were born, but their parents both tested negative in a case that health officials have said is “unheard of.” The triplets were born prematurely in the central Mexican state of San Luis Potosí and got tested just four hours after their birth. One has developed a respiratory infection but was responding well to antibiotics.. Health authorities are investigating several potential explanations, including the possibilities that the virus was transmitted at some point during the mother’s pregnancy. "What we need to look at is a situation where perhaps [the virus] is being

transmitted through the placenta,” Dr Rangel said. “That's not something that we can be sure of. Those are theories

that we have to look at. It's a new virus. There still is not literature available internationally on this issue, but it will be worth reviewing."

"Now that we have the negative result of the PCR tests done on both parents, the case it's even more relevant, not only for the investigation our doctors in the state are doing but for the worldwide research on the behaviour of the virus itself," Rangel said in a Facebook post. Experts are saying that mother-to-child transmission of COVID-19 during pregnancy is “unlikely,” but that newborns can still be infected after birth either from their mother or from other caregivers. Limited published reports indicate that a “small number of babies” have tested positive for the virus shortly after birth, but that children are not at a higher risk than adults, and that the majority of cases to date are adults.

New rules for beaches Alongside the appointment of beach assistants to ensure we are all following the correct coronavirus beach etiquette this summer, there are also new rules to follow for all beach goers. The Councillor for Tourism, Mariola Rocamora, has reported on the placement of information panels that outline the terms for beach usage during this summer in the face of the Covid-19

health crisis. A series of guidelines have been drawn up by Tourism Department of the Regional Valencian Government to ensure people enjoy the beaches safely under hygiene measures that prevent the spread of the virus to its users. This information is aimed at visitors to the beaches and as of now is located at all the authorised entrances, which means a total of 18 information panels distributed across the 11 beaches of Orihuela. "With the aim of facilitating the understanding of these recommendations and avoiding confusion of interpretation due to language, the informative poster has pictograms that inform the local resident or tourist about the rules. The aim is to help people follow these easily, quickly and, above all, safely,” Councillor Rocamora explained. In this sense, the Department of Tourism has accepted the pictogram manual prepared and provided by the Tourist Board of the Alicante Provincial Council in order to provide a uniform image on all beaches on the Costa Blanca. As the mayor has indicated, "sustainable materials have been used to make these panels, such as wood and alucobond, in order to maintain adequate environmental management on the Oriolan beaches."

Beach assistants in Orihuela Costa: Safety first

The Mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, has inaugurated the 24 workers who will serve as beach assistants during the two summer months in the coastal area. The Councillor for Emergencies, Víctor Valverde, the Councillor for Citizen Security, Ramón López, the Chief of the Local Police, José María Pomares, and the Coordinator of Civil Protection, Pepe Andúgar, were also present. The beach assistants, who are already in place, will work two alternative days from 10am to 8pm, will offer users all the information related to compliance with

the safety and hygiene measures established on each beach as a result of the health crisis caused by Covid-19 and will work in coordination with the Local Police and Emergencies. The Oriolan City Council has provided the necessary logistics for providing the assistants the two months and the staff have been hired by the Valencian Agency for Security and Emergency Response and will provide guidance on the beaches and coves of Orihuela Costa until 7th September.

The Importance of Swimming Pool Maintenance importance. Proper professional weekly pool maintenance will keep the pool water properly disinfected and the water quality at optimal levels at all times. Not only is pool maintenance an aesthetic issue, but it is also a health issue because if we do not keep our pool clean, it can become a source of infections such as eye and ear infections, itchy skin, and

maybe even worse. In order to avoid this, on a weekly basis, all year round, we must perform some basic steps to help us keep it clean throughout the year. It is highly recommended that pool maintenance be done weekly, regardless of whether or not the pool is in use. Pool water is not like the running water from

our taps. It is more or less stagnant water and there is a greater risk of it becoming unhealthy pretty quickly if not maintained adequately. The damage that can be caused by not maintaining a pool regularly, far outweigh the costs of regular pool maintenance costs. Regular Pool maintenance will help detect any possible leaks in the pool. If

you suspect a leak, the first step in confirming your suspicion or a pressure test can be carried out by our professionals, which will pinpoint exactly where the leak is. How You Get Sick from a Day in the Pool? The types of illness you could bring home from a pool include: • Outer ear infection: Germy pool water trapped in the ear canal causes infections. • Diarrhea: Giardia, noroviruses, and E. coli can all cause disease, even in a well-maintained pool — it only takes a mouthful. • Respiratory infection: Legionella, better known as Legionnaires' disease, can be caught through inhaling aerosolized droplets in swimming pools or hot tubs harboring the pathogen. • Germs that turn up in swimming pool water include bacteria like E. coli, Salmonella, Camplobacter, noroviruses, and parasites. While treatment with chlorine can kill germs in swimming pools, it takes time for the chlorine to do its job. Sometimes enough time for you to become sick from a mouthful of water you accidentally swallowed. A safe pool must be well maintained by knowledgeable and

qualified professionals. At Paradise Pools and Gardens we are more than just a swimming pool and garden maintenance contractor. Our business is built on the promise that above all other things customer service makes the difference. We aim to be the best at going the extra mile to deliver the personal and professional level of service that exceeds our customer expectations. Paradise Pools and Gardens provides the very best in pool services – including inspections, service, leak detection, repairs, LED colour changing lights Etc… Our PROFESSIONAL services will keep your pool sparkling clean, chemically balanced, and safe for everyone. Are You An Orphan? If you are currently paying a financial adviser to manage your investments, but never sit down in front of your adviser to review your portfolio, then you are what we would call an orphan client. However good the funds looked when your money was invested, if the markets are not monitored and your funds assessed, then there is a danger that your money is not being managed to ensure the best possible returns. If your current adviser does not offer this service, then you might wonder why you are paying an annual management fee. Many people had endowment mortgages in the eighties and nineties and were told that at the end of their mortgage, there

would be enough money left over for that dream car or holiday. Unfortunately, as the funds were not monitored, most people found they had a shortfall and needed to switch to a repayment mortgage. The above is simply an example of how important reviews of your investments are to ensure your goals can be realised. Seagate Wealth advisers all previously worked for Lloyds Bank and are used to providing their clients with the highest level of service. There are a number of financial advisers on the Costa Blanca so the question is “why choose Seagate? I believe that we offer a unique service to our clients. We have a fully staffed local office in Benijofar with a back-up

admin team, a Client Account Manager and a Relationship Manager. This means that we have a team that will support you with six monthly reviews of your investment or pension and we provide full administration for withdrawals, encashments and tax guidance. By getting to know each client individually, your Seagate adviser can fully understand your situation and this allows us to provide the best financial advice, not just for today, but forever. Do not delay making a decision, call us today. For a free no-obligation review of your investments with a Qualified adviser, call 965 704 338 or email: Contact@Seagatewealth.es

Unemployment rise

The effects of the coronavirus pandemic are still being felt in the Spanish labour market, despite the de-escalation of confinement measures. In a normal year, unemployment would fall and the number of people signing up with the Social Security system would rise in the month of June, ahead of the tourism high season. This year, however, unemployment has risen, albeit by just 5,107 people, bringing the total of jobseekers to 3.86 million, the highest figure registered since May 2016, according to figures released today by the Spanish government. The Social Security system, meanwhile, has picked up an average of 68,208 workers, bringing the total number of contributors to 18.6 million. This is the second consecutive rise in this indicator, which is traditionally used to measure employment from month to month.

The rise in unemployment for June is the first increase seen since 2008, just months before the fall of Lehman Brothers and the year of the financial crisis. The increase in contributors to the Social Security system for the month is also the smallest since 2015. In spite of these indicators, the figures for June also show that the Spanish labour market is stabilising. The 5,107 new jobseekers represent a slowdown in job losses, in particular compared to March and April, when the coronavirus crisis was at its peak and Spaniards were locked down under the state of alarm implemented by the government. During the first two months of the pandemic, registered unemployment rose by more than 302,000 and 283,000 people, respectively. By May the increase had fallen to 26,573, and this downward trend has continued into June.

The Labour Ministry attributed the rise in unemployment in June to the end of the fruit-picking season, which saw 25,000 farm workers out of a job, and the incorporation of 30,000 people into the labour market who were inactive. Unemployment fell notably in June in sectors such as services and construction, and to a lesser extent in industry. Unemployment figures do not include the thousands of workers who have been furloughed due to the coronavirus crisis, and are receiving part of their salary on a government work suspension scheme known in Spain as an ERTE. According to the ministry, during the peak of the crisis more than 3.7 million people were benefitting from the ERTE scheme, which the government recently extended to the end of September. Of these, 1.6 million have already returned to their jobs, 1.2 million of these in the month of June.

GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP It was a hard old slog for sterling this week, eventually a seventh of a cent better off against the euro and a quarter of a cent higher against the US dollar. As the UK prepares for its own Independence Day, when pubs, restaurants, hotels and hairdressers can finally start reopening, the week also saw two important speeches. One should have helped the pound, but it didn’t, and the other ought not to have done, but it did. Off the back of those speeches on Tuesday, the pound was within an inch of being the day’s top performer, beaten only by the Canadian dollar. The first speech was by Bank of England Chief Economist Andy Haldane, saying the country was on course for a V-shaped recovery. Coming sooner and faster than expected, it brings with is the risk of higher inflation. This optimism still came with a note of caution though, expressing that increasing unemployment as the government unwinds its furlough scheme could scupper the speedy economic recovery. Haldane’s speech was the sort of talk that would traditionally encourage buyers of currency, but they were conspicuously absent after his statement. Prime Minister Boris Johnson then took to the podium for his ‘Economy Speech’, and announcing £5 billion of capital infrastructure spending. Much of this plan is a rehash of last year’s election manifesto, but it inspired buyers of the pound, with sterling strengthening against the US dollar and the euro by an average of 0.3%. It appeared sentiment was the main driver for sterling, as demonstrated above. Other points to note include the money supply figures from the Bank of England, revealing a third month of net debt repayments by households and a slump in mortgage approvals. Brexit negotiations continued

to rumble on, with the focus on a landing zone that could form the basis of an agreement on trade. EUR A more unproductive week for the euro than the pound, it added an eight of a US cent and lost that much to sterling. Little difference, but again positive sentiment came in the form of removing a rather large and irritating thorn in the EU’s side. Towards the end of last week the European Central Bank carried out a charm offensive to disarm German critics of its quantitative easing activities. The Governing Council’s June meeting and Executive Board Member Isabel Schnabel’s speech both emphasised the proportionality of the ECB’s actions. Schnabel defended the bank’s monetary policy as “necessary, suitable and proportionate.” Evidently, it worked because the Bundestag passed a resolution, making the approval official. Getting the ‘frugal four’ to agree to the terms has been a sticky issue in Europe since the pandemic took hold. At the beginning of May theGerman Constitutional Court had set itself against the ECB and the European Court of Justice by demanding that the bank justify its purchase of bonds and other assets. The meeting account stressed the relationship of the asset purchase programme to the low inflation rate, which the bank is obliged to raise over time from its current level of 0.1% to its target of “at or just below 2%”. The bank’s concern has always been the deep economic slowdown that has followed Covid-19. With Germany on board, its plans can move forward. PMI manufacturing data ranged from growth (in France and Ireland), to continued shrinkage (in Germany). Unemployment in Germany edged up to 6.4%, while Europe overall saw it grow to 7.4%.

Breakfast freeze I caught my husband in a lie He said he was going to see his parents, however I smelled a rat because he didn’t want me to go with him, which is unusal. His parents live in another province so we often stay overnight when we visit them. He said he was coming back the same day initially, but then messaged me to say he was staying overnight after all. He’s such an idiot that he didn’t expect me to check up on him; all it took was a phone call to his mother, who unsurprisingly said he wasn’t there and had never been there. During Lockdown he’s been keeping his phone away from me. When he got home, I flew at him. He said he just needed time away because he’d been depressed in isolation (with me). I didn’t buy it, and I told him that. Eventually he admitted he’d been talking to a woman, and they’d met up, but that nothing happened. I don’t know whether he cheated on me or not. Since then he’s disappearing into another room when his phone bleeps, and now says he is planning a weekend away with ‘his mates’. It wouldn’t take much to check up on him and ask his friends. What should I do? Can my marriage be saved? I think the fact that he lied to you about where he was going, admitted he’d met up with another women, and stayed out all night, confirms that he is a cheat. Even if he says nothing happened between them, how can you trust him again? He is continuing to lie to you, is disregarding your feelings, and is treating you like a doormat, so is there any point to this marriage? Why would anyone want to put up with this behaviour? You are being treated very callously. If I were you I would wave him goodbye when he goes away, and make a call to a Locksmith. Then bag all his clothes up and leave them on the doorstep for his return. Tell him he can go and stay with his parents. WRITE TO SARA IN CONFIDENCE. A PSEUDONYM WILL BE USED IF YOU WISH. Have you ever thought about putting your cereal in the freezer? Well, people on TikTok are doing that and they swear it makes it taste much better. The concept takes barely any effort but a decent amount of patience: All you have to do is pour a bowl of cereal, and place it in the freezer. You’re supposed to leave it in there for a period of time (how long is up to your discretion, because no one specifies for how long). Once you

think it’s cold, take it out, pour milk in, and enjoy. The cold, crunchy cereal paired with the icy bowl will make for a super cool - and supposedly better tasting breakfast. In the comments of the cereal freezer videos, people asked for all of the details about the taste. On TikToker @acebking’s video, the user responded to commenters saying the cereal tasted like “elsa blasted a snow thingy in my

mouf.” One person chimed in to share that their sensitive teeth would not be able to participate. If you try this and can never go back to eating cereal that’s not super cold again, you could store your cereal in containers in the freezer. But then you’d lose the chilled bowl, which seems to be half of the reason the cereal tastes better and sounds perfect for the hot summer ahead here in Spain.

Tia Maria launches Iced Coffee Frappé Cocktail in a can While both cold brew coffees and canned cocktails have been growing in popularity in the last few years – popping up across all the supermarkets – Tia Maria has just brought the two together with its new Tia Maria Iced Coffee Frappé. The iconic coffee liqueur has launched a new ready-to-drink cocktail in a can by sticking to what it knows best, and adding a twist. The tasty new tipple is made with 100 percent Arabica coffee, milk cream, premium vanilla and, of course, Tia Maria. Perfect for summer, it promises to be indulgent and smooth yet

refreshing. A typical frappé foam is created by nitro technology as the can is opened, so you'll feel like you're really sipping on the real deal, with a boozy edge. Whether you're a big Tia Maria fan or not, these delicioussounding cans are definitely worth adding to the shopping list; perfect for BBQs, picnics, or just cooling off in the sun. Tia Maria Iced Coffee Frappé

has an ABV of 4 percent and is now available in selected supermarkets and a European roll out is planned.

Adios Americans The Canadians will be in Europe this summer, and the Thais and the Moroccans. You might bump into a Rwandan, and no doubt Aussie backpackers will give it a go. If Beijing reciprocates on border openings, Chinese travelers could be on their way, too. However, if you live in the European Union, you probably won't be running into American tourists. The bloc is

expected to agree today (Tuesday 7th July) that Yanks will be barred from its member states including Spain, as the US fights a Covid-19 resurgence. The move will highlight the failed US effort to suppress the coronavirus pandemic: Charts of new confirmed coronavirus cases on each side of the Atlantic are moving in exactly the opposite direction. Europe's openings

No-shows by US tourists will hurt the shuttered European tourism industry. Millions bring their dollars across the

Having a little tipple Good news for those of us who credit a daily glass or two of wine for helping us get through lockdown. New research has suggested there are further benefits to enjoying a couple of alcoholic drinks a night to just saving your sanity. The study, published in JAMA Network Open, found that having two alcoholic drinks a day could slow mental decline and preserve brain function. Researchers from the University of Georgia analysed the link between alcohol consumption and changes in brain function over time among 19,887 middle-aged and older adults. The results revealed that those who enjoyed a regular drink (up to 8 per week for women and up to 15 per week for men) were a third less likely to have decreased cognitive function compared to teetotallers. This includes learning, thinking, reasoning, remembering, problem solving, decision making and attention. The findings were similar to previous findings from The Rancho Bernardo Study in southern California which found that moderate, regular alcohol drinking was associated with better cognitive function

compared with never drinking among older adults with a mean age of 73.2 years. The most recent study charted alcohol consumption effects on cognition performance over ten years, using participant data from a nationally representative sample from the Health and Retirement Study in the US. Participants completed surveys

every two years about their health and lifestyle, including questions on drinking habits. They also had their cognitive function measured in a series of tests looking at their overall mental status, word recall, and vocabulary. But before you pour yourself another large rose Dr Changwei Li, co-author of the paper and

epidemiologist at UGA, warned that the study identified a “Ushaped relationship” between alcohol and cognitive function scores. While low to moderate drinking provided benefits too much had the reverse effect. “Our study suggested low to moderate drinking was associated with better total cognitive function and better word recall, mental status and vocabulary,” Dr Li explains. “Low to moderate alcohol use was also associated with slower rates of cognitive decline.” Study authors did note some limitations of the study, particularly that the drinking data was self-reported, meaning participants may not have been perfectly accurate about how much they typically drink. And though the findings are encouraging they don’t necessarily mean we can free pour the drinks every night. There is plenty of research showing too much alcohol isn’t particularly good for our health. So if you have been turning to the booze to get you through these troubling times, just make sure you stick to the recommended daily amounts.

Go bananas There's a very good reason you receive a banana at the finish line of pretty much every race. Bananas have built themselves quite the reputation as a go-to, pre- and postworkout snack, largely because they are high in the electrolyte potassium. They're also a great source of easily digestible carbohydrates. Oh, and they're delicious. Despite the good reputation bananas carry, you may have heard some internet "experts" trying to slander their name. Bananas are higher in sugar than some other fruits, these "experts" say. For that reason, they also contain more calories. And for that reason, you should avoid eating bananas to avoid eating too many calories so that you can lose weight. Bananas have an undeserved bad reputation for being too high in sugar, when they’re

extremely nutritious. Sure, they are higher in sugar than many other fruits, but the sugar we’re talking about here is natural sugar, not added – like in a candy bar. So, the sugar from a banana isn’t bad for you, and it’s totally fine to eat bananas in moderation if you want to lose weight. As for nutritional content, one medium banana contains a little over three grams of fibre and 12 percent of your daily value for potassium. Both fibre and potassium support heart health. Plus, fibre helps you feel full and feeling full helps prevent you from snacking on empty calories. Total carbohydrate needs vary from person to person, but you can still lose weight on a high-carbohydrate diet as long as the calories you’re taking in are less than the calories you’re burning. Experts recommend that the average person looking to maintain or lose weight aim for two servings of fruit per day. However, if you’re extremely active and/or have increased calorie needs you may want to increase that amount. And when it comes to bananas and weight loss, make the most of your fruit by pairing with protein to help increase satiety and stabilise blood sugar levels. Think: string cheese, nut butter, or yogurt.

Healthy options for dining out Staying healthy while dining out can be a stressful task. Portion sizes are often too large, and many dishes that sound like smart choices are actually loaded with saturated fat and sodium. Yes, figuring out what to order can be challenging, but with a little advance research, you can stick to your diet. Firstly, if you're not familiar with the menu, read it before you get to the restaurant. You're more likely to make unhealthy choices when hungry or distracted. The sight and smell of food can make sticking to a plan more difficult, especially if you are hungry. Choosing your food before you arrive makes it easier to avoid snap decisions you might regret later. If you're hungry when you arrive at a restaurant, you may end up eating too much. One way to prevent this is to eat a healthy snack before you get there. A low-calorie, high-protein snack like yogurt could make you feel more full and help prevent overeating Water is a fantastic choice for drinking before and with a meal, especially if you drink it instead of sugar-sweetened drinks. Replacing sugar-sweetened drinks with water can help reduce your intake of calories and added sugar. The way food is cooked can have a significant impact on the amount of calories it contains. Look for food that has been steamed, grilled or poached. In general, these cooking methods equate to less fat and therefore fewer calories. Foods that are described on the menu as

pan-fried, roasted, fried, crispy, crunchy or sautéed will usually contain more fat and more calories. Mindful eating means making conscious choices about what you consume and giving your full attention to the eating process. Take the time to savour the aromas and flavours of your meal, as well as thoughts and feelings that arise while you eat. Mindful eating has been linked with healthier food choices in restaurants. It can also help improve your self-control and prevent you from overeating Other people can influence our decisions without us really noticing. In social situations, people tend to mimic each other subconsciously, and dining out is no exception. People's menu choices and eating behaviours can be highly influenced by the choices of other people at the table. If you're eating with a group that is likely to order something that doesn't fit into your healthy eating plan, make sure you order first. Studies show that people are more likely to overeat when they're served bigger portions. If you are going to a restaurant where you know the portions are huge, try ordering two starters instead of a main course. This can help you fill up without going overboard with the calories. Skip dessert and order a coffee instead. As well as seriously cutting calories and added sugar, you'll also get some of the great health benefits associated with coffee.

Hard Seltzers: the new drinking trend for summer Praise be, it feels like things are finally starting to get back to normal in Spain again (but let’s not speak too soon). We’re allowed to see family and friends in groups and with all those garden parties, picnics and BBQ’s on the horizon, we’re very much in the market for some new drink options. Hard seltzers, have been a big hit over in the US of A for a while now, and are now making their way over to Spain to spice up our weekends? But what actually are these mysterious beverages we are starting to see on supermarket shelves across the land? A hard seltzer is basically just an alcoholic flavoured sparkling water. What’s nice about them is that, as well as being refreshing and boozy (usually around 4-5 percent ABV), they’re also low-calorie, which is great, if your watching those post lockdown pounds. A lot of them have as few as 70-ish calories per can in fact. You can buy a number of hard seltzers in supermarkets. White Claw, Bodega Bay and Mike’s are big hitters in the world of hard seltzers globally and now, seeing as hard seltzers have become kind-of a big deal in Europe Kopparberg, Smirnoff and Barefoot Wine have also launched their own range of these tasty tipples. More locally, Spanish brewery Savis is also stocking local beach and cocktails bars. As well as supermarkets, you can also get a load of hard seltzers on Amazon. Booze delivered to your front door? Oh, the luxury of it all.

UK starts vaccine trial on humans Around 300 Volunteers have begun being immunised with a new UK coronavirus vaccine, as part of a trial at Imperial College London. The trials are among many across the world - there are around 120 vaccine programmes under way. After this first phase, another trial is being planned for

SALE

October, involving 6,000 people. The Imperial team hopes the vaccine could be distributed in the UK and overseas from early 2021. Many traditional vaccines are based on a weakened or modified form of virus, or parts of it, but the Imperial vaccine is based on a new approach, using synthetic strands of genetic code, called RNA, which mimic the virus. Once injected into muscle, the RNA selfamplifies - generating copies of itself and instructs the body's own cells to make copies of a spike protein found on the outside of the virus. This should train the immune system to recognise and fight coronavirus without having to develop Covid-19. Because only a tiny amount of genetic code is used in the Imperial vaccine, a little goes a very long way. The Imperial team says one litre of its synthetic material will be enough to produce two million doses.

Myth Busting: Flip Flops It seems to get earlier in the season each year when stories are shared through social media channels explaining certain summer fines such as those for driving when wearing flip flops. Firstly, let us be clear, driving in flip flops, or other inappropriate footwear, can be very dangerous, as was the case in 2016 when a loose fitting sandal got trapped behind the brake pedal of a car in Manchester, the car crashing into a wall and a little girl being killed as a result, something the driving father will have to live with for the rest of his life. However, despite the danger, there is no specific law dictating what sort of footwear can be worn when driving. There are however laws which dictate that as a driver you must always be in full control of your vehicle. If you are wearing inappropriate footwear and are involved in an incident, a collision, or are caught committing an offence, speeding as an example, then you are clearly not in full control and it can be taken into consideration. When you drive with flip flops if becomes easier to be involved in an incident. When you drive back home from the beach, for example, your flip flops are often wet and have sand on them, therefore you have a high risk of losing your flip flops while driving or when you use your car pedals. With Flip flops you cannot break or accelerate properly, ALL these factors can end in a traffic incident or infraction and in thesecases, you can be fined for driving with

inappropriate footwear. Wearing appropriate footwear is a must when driving. When you think about the physical process required to make a vehicle go, turn, or stop, all the actions are performed by our hands and feet. In the UK, Rule 97 of the Highway Codes states that before setting off, you should ensure that “clothing and footwear do not prevent you using the controls in the correct manner”. If we consider a driver who is barefoot, for example, there is nothing illegal about this, but controlling the clutch, and even the brakes, can require a lot of pressure, which may prove difficult if a driver is barefoot. Feet can sweat and reduce the traction and wearing of socks or stockings is not ideal either, on account of the pressure needed. Flip flops and sandals are considered by far the most dangerous of all inappropriate footwear. Shoes which don´t fit securely may fall off when driving and can get in the way of the pedals as we have explained. Equally dangerous is how the foot can slip whilst the shoe remains in contact with the pedal, thus reducing braking time and causing a considerable risk when stopping. High heels also pose their own problems, largely because these shoes are designed to alter the shape of the foot and ankle to raise the profile of the wearer. That´s all very well for a glamorous stroll through a prestigious event, but when sitting in a driving

position the shape of the shoe prevents correct contact with the pedals, again reducing the response time. Supposing a lack of control of the clutch makes the car lunge forward and hit something in front, or the reaction time is reduced due to stumbling feet and you are unable to stop before hitting an obstacle, if it is likely that the inappropriate footwear was a contributing factor, the driver may well see a fine issued. Similarly, if an insurance company decides that inappropriate footwear was a contributing factor, it may lessen the compensation amount in the event of a claim. As for choosing the most appropriate shoe for driving, comfort is important and a flat shoe that will not easily slip off is best, not too wide, and secure. You can buy specific driving shores, but laced, Velcro or secure slip-on plimsolls or trainers are ideal, so long as they are flat, with rubber grip on the underside which provides excellent traction and control over the pedals. Shoes that allow the driver to feel the pedal through the shoe, whilst still being able to apply sufficient pressure without discomfort, are the best for the job. We strongly recommend that you always wear appropriate, fitting footwear when you drive, for the reasons we have explained, inappropriate footwear will be taken into consideration, but they are not expressly forbidden.

Agenda 2030: Ten Years to Change the World The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted all plans, although the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of Agenda 2030 can be the compass that guides the world in the new normal, with a fundamental goal of road safety and the reduction of victims of traffic incidents. What is Agenda 2030? On September 25, 2015, the world made the decision to eliminate poverty and inequality and to face social, environmental, and demographic challenges. With that objective, the United Nations General Assembly approved Agenda 2030 and 193 countries, including Spain, signed the agreement. Thus began a period of 15 years to achieve the 17 SDGs, developed in 169 goals. The Government of Spain points out that Agenda 2030 "is an action plan in favour of people, the planet and prosperity" that does not want to "leave anyone behind". To do this, it proposes a structural reform of the economic model and actions in areas such as education, employment, innovation, health, welfare and social justice, gender equality, integration of diversity and sustainability of production and consumption models. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a public health emergency and a triple crisis (economic, social, and humanitarian). In this scenario, Agenda 2030 can be the compass that guides the world. According to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, "the Sustainable Development Goals, backed by human rights, provide the

framework for more inclusive and sustainable economies and societies." More than 190 countries have committed to the Agenda 2030 and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and so the question must be whether the COVID-19 pandemic will change the terms of Agenda 2030. At the moment, everything indicates that this will not be the case, and that the vision of Agenda 2030 will remain intact, without changing a comma. In fact, all indicators suggest that the pandemic has "reinforced" the goal, according to Álvaro Gómez, director of the DGT's National Observatory of Road Safety, because the pandemic "has shown that what is aimed for in Agenda 2030 is more necessary than ever." The experts who advised in the preparation of the 3rd World Ministerial Conference on Road Safety, held in February in Stockholm, pointed out as an especially important achievement that the reduction of road victims was included “explicitly” in the SDGs. Pilar del Real, head of the Strategic Intervention Area of the DGT National Road Safety Observatory, agrees on this: "We know how important road safety is, but it is very good that it has been recognised." And it underlines that we are facing "an opportunity" because "road safety is a necessity for health, climate, equity and prosperity". Goal 3.6 Although practically all the DGT's actions are directly or

indirectly related to Agenda 2030, SDG 3 is the most binding: "Guarantee healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages". More specifically, target 3.6, which aims to halve deaths and injuries caused by traffic incidents in the world. To do this, actions and means are articulated to monitor compliance with the norm and to reduce risks at the wheel (speed, distractions, wearing a helmet and seat belt and not consuming drugs and / or alcohol). It is about developing policies for sustainable and safe mobility. Del Real points out that work in goal 3.6 “allows other policies to be helped, such as improving labour aspects or training for young people; On the contrary, there are other policies that are not directly related to road safety, but do benefit Goal 3.6, such as issues related to the environment or the improvement of health systems. It is a 'win-win' in which we all benefit.” The ODS 4 urged to ensure a just, equitable, inclusive education that promotes equality and equal opportunities. To reduce road casualties, road training and education are a decisive factor. For this reason, the tests to obtain a driving licence (the new driving assistance systems, ADAS), driving courses for drivers who already have a licence, specific road safety courses for professionals and activities have been improved, as well as awareness and road safety education ( such as safe school road or STARS Project).

Cars that go furthest with the fuel light on

New car grants save the planet and the industry An ambitious government plan to boost Spain's car industry will involve a cash injection of €3.75 billion to allow individuals and companies to upgrade their vehicles where these are over a given age. Additional funds will be granted for those who buy electrically-powered, rather than conventional petrol or diesel, cars, and extra financial help will be provided for households on the lowest incomes. Part of the plan, as well as giving the motor industry in Spain a hefty dose of extra security at a time when it has been hit hard by the pandemic, is to work towards the country's becoming 'zero emissions' by the year 2050. President Pedro Sánchez says this 'urgent environmental transition towards sustainable and connected mobility' will also help the industry 'adapt itself and become more competitive'. “This is consistent with our international commitments concerning fighting, adapting to and mitigating

www.costablancapeople.com

climate change,” the socialist leader explains. “We're aiming to make it easier to rejuvenate the cars on our roads so that they're more energy-efficient and more in line with our energy transition objectives that we've set ourselves.” As well as grants for buying new cars, the funding set aside will help towards a 'tax reform' to 'increase competitiveness', towards 'supporting training and education in the industry', and 'research'. “Cars of the future will be very different to those of the past,” Sánchez says. Investing heavily in the motor industry is crucial to Spain's economy, argues the president, since it makes up around 10% of the GDP, a sizeable portion of the country's exports, and provides jobs directly and indirectly to around two million people. “We want Spain to have better, more sustainable vehicles, cleaner towns and cities, quality employment, and a much more competitive motor industry,” Sánchez concludes.

Have you ever played fuel light roulette? That’s how far you can get after the fuel light has flashed up on the dashboard – it’s a game of chance and risk. Research from Compare the Market showed 37 percent of drivers believe they can drive for just 20 miles once the fuel light comes on. In fact, you can probably drive twice that distance – and more in the right car. Here, are the top three cars if you don’t fancy being left stranded at the roadside... Ford Fiesta - 41.1 miles On average, you can expect to cover 40 miles in a Ford Fiesta with the fuel light on. A total of 96 popular cars were compared as part of this study. Remember, driving on empty can cause mechanical problems for your vehicle, as well as leaving you stranded without fuel. Nissan Juke - 40.8 miles Obviously, the figures provided by Compare the Market are just averages – there are many factors associated with how far you can get once the fuel light has lit up. The size of the engine, whether it’s a petrol or diesel car, how fast you’re driving, and the topography of the landscape are just four of the variables at play. Peugeot 108 - 39.1 miles. It’s a similar story in the Peugeot 108, a car that will spend much of its life in towns and cities. Which means you shouldn’t find yourself too far from a fuel station.

TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT Jose Mourinho was doing the complete opposite.

■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Another seven days pass and Liverpool haven’t exactly been the most dominant Premier League Champions we’ve ever had, have they? I almost believed King Kloppo when he said his side had been sensible in their celebrations - he lost me when he said the ‘mentality monsters’ had their heads fully in the game at the Etihad. Jurgeylad, if your team was fullyfocused there is no way that they could go to Man City and have their pants pulled down 4-0. No way at all. Just for that result alone, there should be no further ‘guards of honour’ for the rest of the season. On the flip side, it’s all very well Raheem Sterling saying ‘next season starts now’ - it doesn’t, Raheem (though technically it is only a few weeks away). Stuffing the champions 4-0 is good and all that, but it doesn’t do anything for next season. There is a strange irony in the Reds losing only once on their way to the title and then losing the very next match - if that doesn’t tell you the collective ‘thank goodness that is over’ once the title was confirmed, nothing will. Should Klopp be worried that City were so much better than them on the night? Probably not that worried - but only getting one shot on target in the first-half at home to Aston Villa would have been more concerning. We’ll get on to that. If Klopp was defending his team on Thursday night, you can guarantee that

Sheffield United have stumbled out of the restarting blocks, the dream of Champions League football starting to turn into pesky Europa League qualifiers. But, at home to Spurs, it all came together once more - though it was more down to Tottenham than the Blades. The defeat left Spurs in 9th, with nextto-no chance of the Champions League next time around. Thursday night football it might be, and the performance at Bramall Lane suggests they might not be all that good at it. All that can really be said about this Tottenham team is that if Sissoko is still in midfield and Eric Dier has become a first-choice central defender then Pochettino was lucky to get sacked. It’s fair to say the most surprising postlockdown result was at the Athletics Stadium. Chelsea could have edged above Leicester into third-place until the defence went completely absent without leave. Credit has to be given to West Ham, and regular readers will know how odd that phrase looks in this column. They could have folded when the classic VAR-rules-out-goal-andthen-you-concede-instantly routine happened again, but they didn’t. Tomas Soucek feels like a decent signing for the Hammers and he was instrumental in making Toni Rudiger, Tammy Abraham and, of course, Kepa look totally amateurish at set-pieces. David Moyes was naturally delighted in the post-match-socially-distant presser, stating he wasn’t there to moan about VAR before doing precisely that. Let it go, Moyeseh. You won, for once.

The result was probably the best thing Moyes has ever done for Man United as it meant their 3-0 win over Brighton closed the gap at the top further and meant that Ole’s pre-match boast that ‘we could go unbeaten’ until the end of the season didn’t sound like the mumbles of a complete madman. United are learning to deal in the currency of clean sheets (up until the weekend, any how) and if the Brugba/Brogba/Pogno bromance continues to blossom then there is every chance they could end up finishing in the top four. You would have probably joined me in thinking Arsenal would find a way of messing up against Norwich and you’d have been wrong. Since the restart, and despite taking a while to find any substance, Arsenal have been given more gifts than a kid at Christmas. Tim Krul joined the growing list of ‘more assists than Ozil’ by laying one on a plate for Gunners who went on to score four. Bournemouth have had better weeks. The players must have failed to get the group WhatsApp message that said the midweek clash against Newcastle was a must-win. 4-1 at home to Steve Bruce’s side is not how you get out of a relegation zone. Everton have become quietly effective, seeing off a beautifully-clad Leicester City at Goodison Park. And then, of course, there was the weekend. Norwich and Brighton played out a match that pretty much sealed the fate of next season for both sides. Considering Norwich gaffer Daniel Farke believed this was the match they had to win to have any hope of catching the sides above

Elche CF, To Be or Not to Be in the Play Offs? Another busy week in La Liga smart bank for play off contenders Elche CF. They faced top of the table Cadiz, followed by bottom of the table Racing Santander, both tested the Elche. On the last day of June, Cadiz CF came to the Martinez Valero hoping to cement automatic promotion for the first time since their relegation in 1991- 92 season. A little like Leeds Utd, Cadiz have been trying for a few seasons now, always missing out at the final whistle. The game itself was a cagey affair with not many chances resulting in a point a piece. Cadiz took the lead in the first half only for the goal to be ruled offside, letting an unadventurous Elche off the hook. In the second half, Cadiz fluffed their couple of chances, and the Elche sub Pere Milla missed a sitter from inside the 18 yard box, by sending the ball wide. On American Independence Day Elche CF made the 854km journey to

the empty 22,222 capacity Estadio El Sardinero, home of Racing Santander who, at the start of the match were bottom of the league and one defeat away from confirmed relegation. In theory Elche CF, in 6th place, should have confidently quashed their opponents. Never a team to take the obvious option, they gave us without doubt a hard watch for the first 45 minutes. The highlight was the covid water break at 29 minutes, which wasn't really necessary as the temperature was a cool 22 degrees. Racing used their water break wisely. Shortly afterwards former Elche player, Guillermo took advantage. The Elche defence, namely Tekio, couldn't clear the ball so Guillermo fired from close range into the top of the net,

resulting in his 2nd goal of the season. On 63 mins Elche were awarded a penalty. Elche's current top scorer this season, Fidel Chavas (who had been substituted on for injured Ivan Sanchez at 35 minutes) stepped up to take it. Take it he did, and levelled the score to 1-1. Then it was time for Brazilian Jonathas to remind us of what he had done during his first term at the club, in 2014-15 when he got 14 goals for us in La Liga. Fidel crossed in from the left, Jonathas planted a low powerful header past Crespo to win the game in the 72nd minute. The result doomed Racing Santander, after just one season, to return to the third level of Spanish Football. Elche CF have just 4 games left to hang on to their play off place.

them, it was even more curious he decided to rest Teemu Pukki and Todd Cantwell - two of the three Canaries capable of doing anything in the final third. Up at Old Trafford, Bournemouth bombed despite Maguire getting megged. Mason was marvellous, Martial minxy. Matic mucked it and was saved by Bruno’s bullet. The Cherries’ run-in is like a horror movie but if they do get out of this it will be the 2020 reshoot of the Great Escape. Ever since the talk of European football started to be heard in the empty Selhurst Park, Crystal Palace have slammed the breaks on to not put Uncle Roy in a position of having to go abroad in August. I’d go as far as suggesting the players might fancy a bit of a summer holiday rather than playing pointless qualifiers in far-flung destinations like Latvia or Wales. Leicester remembered how to win a football match at the King Power and Jamie Vardy slipping Big Sahko a tenner before kick-off was money well spent as the French defender ‘slipped’ to allow Vardy to finally score his 100th Premier League goal. His second was all his own work and he looks like a good shout for the Golden Boot once more. Arsenal backed up a bit of flat-track bullying against Norwich with a surprisingly classy performance against Wolves. Bukayo Sako celebrated his new contract with a cheeky goal and Alexandre Lacazette won my ‘first touch of the weekend’ award before steering home the second. That’s four wins in a row for the Gunners now, don’t you know. North London might just be red once again. Chelsea look certain to be the highest-

Las Ramblas Golf Society Hold the front page! In a rarely played format Monday saw a new all-time record set when Lindsay Forbes, John Dobson and John & Ellen Drakesmith scored 107 points in the best 2 scores from 4 to count but with all recorded on holes 1,9,10 and 18. The previous record, dating back to 2015, was 100 points. However that was on the Las Ramblas course so maybe that should stay in the record books? We’ll have to let the jury decide. With 105 points John Shervell, Mike Brentnall, Graham Murray and Anne Marie Weisheit would have also have beaten the previous best! Wednesday’s individual Stableford saw some quite incredible scores. Mike Brentnall continued his recent run of good form and took 1st place with an amazing 46 (yes 46!) points. Say goodbye to your handicap Mike!A score like that was more than enough to leave our very own ‘Lone Ranger’ Graham Murray in 3rd but still he still managed 42 points! In 2nd spot it was Graham’s wife, Petina, with 43 points, which on any other day would have been a winning score.

I’m pleased to report I was finally part of a winning team in Friday’s 1-2-3 Waltzer. Alongside Terry Field, Mike Mahoney and Paul Brown we managed 92 points. Close, but not close enough, on 90, were Mark Western, Joyce McClusky, John Dobson and the fictional Albert. This week’s words of wisdom are supplied by Henry Beard who remarked, ‘Play it as it lies is one of the fundamental dictates of golf. The other is wear it if it clashes.’ Por ultimo, our best wishes go out to Reg Akehurst who celebrates his 91st birthday tomorrow. Pues hasta la semana que viene Peter Reffell

placed London side after they put the hilarity of losing to West Ham to one side to see if wannabe-in-London side Watford. Olivier Giroud did what he does best which was not much other than score another well-taken goal. Willian netted from the spot after Capoue felt no need to stop running straight into Christian Pulisic and Ross Barkley looked alright getting the third. Watford are back in trouble, but should be OK considering they have Aston Villa and Bournemouth below them. Speaking of Villa, they managed to keep Liverpool out for an hour. Sadly for them, football matches last 90 minutes. Burnley welcomed Sheffield United for a game that will be forgotten by the time you read this. It finished 1-1. Burnley. Sheffield United. See, you’ve forgotten already. It would have been peak West Ham to follow up the shock win over Chelsea with defeat to Newcastle and it looked as though the Hammers would walk away with another three points. Well, it looked like that for all of a couple of minutes before Jonjo Shelvey took advantage of Pablo Fornals playing the entire Geordie population onside before equalising. At the start of today’s ramblings, I said the most surprising result since lockdown as West Ham beating Chelsea. I might have peaked too soon with that outlandish claim. Southampton beating ‘next season starts now’ Man City 1-0 with a 40-yard strike by Che Adams, opening his account for the club, takes some beating, to be fair.
